CO-DM JonathanT - Kobold Chamber of Horrors: 10 coupons Wednesday May 30th, 2012 11:43:55 PM
DM OOC: Ok, this is what I've got so far. Only need Lemick's and Crag's actions but posting what's happened so far and tomorrow when I get home from work I'll post their results.
A couple of notes. 1) I've rearranged the location of Crag as I forgot to move him last time.
2) There are a number of things you guys have had questions with and I'll be more than glad to go over them with you. Some have been answered already, hopefully to some degree of satisfaction, others are still open (such as the dart attacks in the guard room) that we can hash over later. This encounter has had its challenges, to say the least, but I hope we all can learn from it. I can learn a lot for sure anyway. :)
So, here we go for another round, I think I see one more dead kobold aready so things are looking up, eh?
IC: Harvest, entangled by webs, tries to play upon Peza's sense of comradeship and teamwork and pleads for her to not leave her there to die! (DM OOC: I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that if you want to change someones attitude who's been enspelled, you'd need to roll either a Bluff or Intimidate or something, to try to break the spell.)
Harvest then prepares herself for the worst.
Gerox (DM OOC: if I put him at O8, 25'move, then he can't cast the spell as that's two moves for the short guy. I'll have to put him at N8, 20'move. That would work)
The gnome sorcerer changes his mind about leaving and tries to get Harvest out of her predicament by returning to his lit wall and casting little fire glob. Through the dim light, he sees the glob strike the black-spider tour, singing it a bit.
Peza, unable to break the enchantment by Harvests words alone, charges down the hallway towards the others, her tears streaking the hard earth. Someday, she'll understand what is happening to her, but will her friends?
Crag does something.
Down by the Dinning Room: Brom finally gets the idea that the best way to get to the kobolds is to get right in there among them. Good thing the barbarian has good acrobatic skills and kobolds don't. However, as he crosses the pile of kindling and firewood, K6j (action held) tosses his little torch onto the pile. Hit: (OOC: I'm not going to be able to finish this tonight so I'll roll to see if Brom gets flambe'd later)
He takes aim at K13s but misses.
Barratore moves forward 5' again and, like Brom, maybe, perhaps, if the kobold doesn't miss again, gets his foot burned. Well see tomorrow. If Lemmick gets his healing off, maybe the Minotaur survives to kill K6j after all. Since his action was Held, he gets to toss his thingy first. Hopefully Lemick can get his Channel healing to ya this round.
Bralin retreats from the kobold to heal Barratore before he becomes toast.
OOC: that's what I got so far. It's too late in the night to do the enemy and we really need Lemick's channel healing if he's gonna do it. So hang in there, ask questions if you want to, and I'll finish this tomorrow evening. :}
Gerox Shale Hp 16/16; AC13 - Sub/Al Thursday May 31st, 2012 1:12:32 AM
OoC: Gerrox has the Elemental/Fire Bloodline, which gives him a speed of 30.

Lemick 4-Leaf Sted/Anthony hp 16/16, ac 20/12/18 d6=2 ; Thursday May 31st, 2012 8:32:56 AM
OOC: Okay, going along the burst of channelling as I understand what you posted, channelling from where Lemick currently is, will catch Brt and Brl as I can see them within my 30'. However, k8j will not be healed as he is around a corner. With that in mind, it's far safer than passing that ax again.
DM Note: you got that right! :)
IC: Focusing his energies and fills his immediate area with positive energy: healing those (BRT and BRL) a 2 points.
OOC: Yes the die roller continues to hate me.
DM OOC: not just you, I think its this whole kit-n-kaboodle.

Crag, realizing that his crossbow just ran the other way with Peza, has limited options. He will move next to Harvest(M9), and attempt to pull her/help her free herself from the webs.
(Str check of 11, or aid another of 9)
Peza Thursday May 31st, 2012 8:56:34 PM
Peza keeps running towards battle with the kobolds ....
" leave or die " the thought keeps racing through her head ..... planted there by the semi transparent being
Tears continue to streak down her cheeks .... knowing she left Harvest webbed and in danger ...

Same time, same channel. Wrapping up. A couple of things: a) I forgot to move Peza. She'll make it to Lemick this round. Wonder what Lemick will think when he sees her careening around the corner crying? b) Gerox, you need to make a Caster Level Check (1d20 + caster level) vs SR18 to see if you overcome the black spider-taur's Spell Resistance before I can give it the 8hp damage. c) updated Gerox's position to O8. d) forgot to move Bralin.
That said, let's go!
Finishing up WLA'ers turn: Lemick sends for a burst of positive energy healing Barratore and Bralin a bit. Better'n nothing, eh?
Crag moves over to Harvest and in the gloom tries to break her free of the webs. He does not succeed.
Resolving K6j's Held Action: K6j (action held) tosses his little torch onto the pile of wood chips and sticks. Hit AC16. This time the little torch lands on the wood and the wood chips and sticks erupt in flames doing 2 pts fire damage to Brom and Barratore and continues to burn hotly.
With Barratore still alive due to the healing from his friends, tossing the torch onto the wood was K6j's last brave act.
Now Resolving their turn: Barratore is lined up perfectly for Squad A, K1j - K4j, and they all poke at the minotaur. They know they'll be targeted next. K1j javelin att Barratore hit AC10 K2j javelin att Barratore hit AC2, (Ref 10, %35) he drops his javelin but it falls on his side of the table) K3j javelin att Barratore hit AC5 K4j javelin att Barratore hit AC7
OOC: i think these kobolds should be fired!
K8j tries to pull his table back into position, STR 11, and manages to close the gap again.
K10j tries to push his table forward to give him some room, STR 0. Nope. Nothing doin'. Still stuck behind the table.
K9j steps to Y12 and stabs at Brom hit AC6. K11s slings a stone at Barratore hit AC19, dmg 1.
K16b steps back to Z11 and shoots a poisoned dart at Brom, hit AC15-4(melee)=11.
The slingers K12s, K13s, and K15s become spearkobolds as they drop their slings and draw their spears then start poking at Brom: K12s spear Att Brom hit AC16 K13s spear Att Brom hit AC2 (%66 does not drop it) K15s spear Att Brom hit AC2 (%78 does not drop it) OOC: see, they are Slingers for a reason!
The last slinger triest to knock out the minotaur: K14s sling att Barratore hit AC18, dmg 1
On the other side: The Black Spider-Taur eyes Gerox and sees Crag trying to free Harvest. It utters arcane words. D20+9 = 25 vs DC13.
At the conclusion of the casting, the glowing wall next to Gerox suddenly does not glow anymore. Without that light, the Deeper Darkness takes over the whole room. An emanation spell functions like a burst spell, except that the effect continues to radiate from the point of origin for the duration of the spell. Most emanations are cones or spheres. (Al's Examples: Light. Darkness.)
OOC Note: although you can see your PCs on the map, it is totally dark, even for Darkvision PCs. You won't know who moves where unless you specifically communicate and/or roll Perception Rolls. Naturally, the hallway leading back to the kobolds is dark, but as far as you know, that area is Normal dark.
Special DM Roll: 25
Everything is a guess now. Although you have a decent picture of the room and the chairs in the middle, things just got a little bit tougher.
Brom the Barbarian; AC: 18 (T 12, FF 16, Raged 14), CMD: 19 (21 Raged); HP: 19/21 (23/25 Raged); DR 1/- (2/- vs. non-lethal) d20+7=11 ; Thursday May 31st, 2012 11:40:42 PM

Atk: AC11.
Gerox Shale Hp 16/16; AC13 - Sub/Al Friday June 1st, 2012 6:23:03 AM
OoC: Light, Darkness, Deeper Darkness are all spells with a range of Touch. If the spidertaur cast the spell in square J8, touching something to place the spell, the area of effect should extend up Row 8, but not turn the corner into the rest of the room. Correct?
DM Note: I'm glad you saw that, 'cause I had thought that I had read somewhere that it was a Range, not Touch. Goes for posting at 11:00pm or later and having my memory jogged on Burst/Emanation/Spread. I'll update the map. However, don't confuse this update with what just happened. As you know, these spells don't stack, so something else happened to cancel your Light spell. You'll have to use Knowledge Arcana to figure that out, if you want to take the time.
Gerox Shale Hp 16/16; AC13 - Sub/Al d20+2=20 ; Friday June 1st, 2012 7:32:15 AM
Just before the lights go out ... That's ... Thinks the gnome. That's some powerful spell resistance. But the flames catch hold and burn the villain. Yoh! Gerox pumps a fist in the air.
Then the lights go out.
"Ha! Can't take the heat, can you? HA! First little burn and you run away. HA!"
"Well, that's all we can do here." The gnome begins feeling his way back toward the doorway. "I'm going back to the Pit of Kobold Madness. Make sure he doesn't follow us, will you?"
"Hmmm. Let me leave a light right here too." Gerox fires off a cantrip and touches the wall.

"It is alright, Crag Hammerfist," whispers Harvest Moon. "I am not truly trapped. The web did not have two walls to cling to."
"Let us go, as Gerox Shale suggests. But ensure that this one does not follow."
At that, Harvest Moon begins moving slowly back towards the entrance to the room. The web makes movement awkward, but she is still nimble enough to negotiate the darkness with relative ease. She finds the corner and exits the room. Then, Harvest Moon crouches quietly, listening for the sounds of the Black Spiderkin, the fall of its spider feet distinct from those of Gerox Shale and Crag Hammerfist.

Fortunately for Harvest, it is pitch black, and she cannot see the mix of anger and frustration on Crag's face. "Waddya mean you are not trapped?" He growls at her. "First you're yelling for help cuz you are stuck, then you are not really stuck. You human women are gonna get me killed yet." The Dwarf finishes. If he could see a wall, he would likely slam his head against it in frustration.
Crag let's out a final frustrated "BAH!" as he turns and makes his way back into the light, following the wall he was standing next to back the way he had come. He will move to G11. "Harvest, one of us should go help the others, one of us should stay and watch for the spider Taur thing in case it comes after us."
CO-DM JonathanT - Kobold Chamber of Horrors: 10 coupons Friday June 1st, 2012 3:44:49 PM DM Map Update: It was brought to my attention, and I blame it all on very late night posting, my cat, and my wife (why not? she blames me for everything too), that the Deeper Darkness in the Spider-Taur Room does not affect the entire room. This has to do with re-learning the difference between Burst-Emanation-Spread, and so forth.
So the update is that the Deeper Darkness only affects Row 8. Although those IN Row 8 at the time it was cast won't know the difference (Player Knowledge vs PC knowledge).
However, the Light spell on the wall did go from Dim (Deeper Darkness counteracting Light) to OUT. To know why you gotta roll for it. :)
This doesn't change things a whole lot except that Crag can see with his Darkvision the room Except Row 8. Gerox and Harvest, can't see anything from where they are.
Sorry about the slight confusion, hope it didn't screw things up too much. Playing spellcasters is rather new to me, and you wouldn't believe how much time I spend researching everything that's going on and hoping I got it right. :)

The stuggle continues with no one truely getting the upper hand.
Kobold dinning/slaughter room: K9j, despite being 'exposed' is quite nimble and dodges Brom's kukri. A cold sweat drips from his forehead.
Peza rushes past Lemick and before he can warn her of the axe trap, she barges into the kobold room yelling something about a glowing thing sending her to kill. (DM Note: the axe trap is a physical attack vs AC, since it swings in the middle length-wise, I've been giving those who know about it and squeeze against the wall to try to avoid it, a bonus to their AC.) Axe Trap Hit AC17.
Unknowing managing to evade the swinging axe and laughing maniacly she announces doom to all the kobolds. Question mark 'balloons' pop up everywhere over everyone's heads, including the WLA'ers.
(OOC: Somewhere, a PC Roleplaying Award Committee scibbles her name down on the Best Roleplaying Award roster.)
Squeezing here and there, she manages to plant herself in the middle of the room and take a pot-shot off at K8j, who, caught off guard by the Mad Amazon from Hell and her Prediction of Doom, stands, jaw agape as the bolt zips over its head. (DM OOC: I thought this was so good I gave Peza a 'by' on the AoO the kobold normally would get for Range attack while in melee range).
Lemick works on keeping the pary alive by channeling more healing energy into his friends. (DM OOC: with the trap sprung, it will be 'harmless' while being reset, but you'll have to wait until you hear the cranking noise indicating the reseting. Until then, it will swing several dangerous times.)
Barratore despite his foot a-burning, manages to clobber a(?) kobold. (DM Note: you got 4 to choose from so I'll roll a d4 and pick the lucky ducky that way.) d4 = 2
K2j falls before the Mighty Minotaur!
Smartly, the minotaur steps back out of the fire. unfortunately there's little place to go.
(DM OOC: i don't think Bralin remembered your move and didn't move himself. I can handle it several ways: a) not allow Barratore to move, b) push Bralin back to D13 and face the swinging axe, c) push Bralin to C12 and allow k8j an AoO against Bralin's spell casting. The least dangerous is the kobold's AoO, so I'm making the DM's Executive Decision in favor of c.)
The minotaur's bulk, and desire to evade further fire damage, causes him to reflexively sidestep into Bralin's space pushing the dwarf out of the way. Bralin, attempting to avoid a swinging axe, manages to step next to K8j (C12).
Bralin, despite being threatened by a K8j, knows his odds are good at avoiding the javelin and cast's another healing spell on Barratore. K8j, having recovered from Peza's sudden appearance with a bolt pointed at his head, jabs at Bralin's exposed butt. AoO for casting spell while in melee range hit AC8 (OOC: See? I told ya it was the best option.)
To the Spider Room, Batman! uh. sorry, WLA'ers!
Gerox gets excited at seeing his little ball of fire singe the black Spicer-Taur and taunts it some until his lit wall goes out and decides it is time to get away himself. He heads towards the west wall hopping to be out of the way of anything headed his way from the Spider-Taur. Moving from Deeper Darkness into Normal Darkness does not help the gnome's Low Light visioin much but he manages to find the wall in question and risks another of his Light spells. Ya never know.
To the sorcere's surprise, the room lights up marvelousely, all except a 5' section along the north wall, which remains Dim. Harvest's shadowy form can be seen dangerously in the entrance to the Black Spider-Taur's Lair, Crag's form in front of him. Gerox Percption roll DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: { On the ceiling at O8 lurks the Black Spider-Taur! (OOC: I'll put his icon there if you make the roll)}
Harvest faced with being webbed and in total darkness, decides that Gerox has a good idea to leave well enough alone and perhaps Peza had the better sense even if enspelled. She struggles against the sticky webs but manages to make it to the exit hall when the room suddenly lights up and she sees Gerox next to her. She stops just outside the room where the darkness does not seem so 'opressive' and peers back into the room.
To her great surprise she sees that somehow the Black Spider-Tour had managed to scuttle along the ceiling past her (DM OOC: i rolled an exceptionally high Stealth check) and lurks in the shadowy section along the north wall next to where Gerox had been. (DM OOC: i'm using your Perception roll to 'see' Blackie instead of 'hear' as it had already passed by and this makes more sense.)
Crag looses sight of Harvest but he can hear her and gets rather uppitty at her. Entagled? Not Entangled? Women! Somewhere in the Wold a protest errupts comprised of women and march down the street pinching every dwarf they see. Somewhere else an owl drops a note to a Sage with the question "Are Dwarven women this way too?" The Sage scratches his head the jumps over the cliff, for to find the answer would be a far greater torture than the rocks below.
(DM OOC: ok, I'm just kidding here. :} )
Crag then sees Harvest brush by him and he realizes he can see most of the room with his Darkvision. He then sees Gerox nearly trip over a chair and a quick warning sets the Gnome right. Crag then heads out too, but not hindered by the darkness, he passes the others and finds himself next to the nitch before he realized Harvest didn't follow and the room is all lit up again.
Kobold Dinning room: The kobolds suffer another terrible loss and give them an incentive to keep fighting.
K17b lets the axe swing and sends a dart towards Barratore, hit AC10. DM OOC to Barratore: a blowgun is a missile weapon and he gets an AoO on K17b but with a -4 due to the wall corner giving partial Cover.
K1j does not want to step on gore so he stays put, as well as K4j, and they both jab at Barratore. K1j hit AC17, dmg 3 K4j hit AC10
K3j takes a step to Y14, glad to be temporarily out of the way of the Mighty Mino, and jabs at Brom. Flanking Hit AC18. dmg 1
K9j yelps with glee when he sees K3j draw blood and jabs at Brom as well. Flanking Hit AC8.
K8j decides to avoid the Mad Amazon from Hell as it might be bad luck to attack the Insane. If he could understand Common, he might be shaken by her words, but he can't. Att Bralin hit AC9.
K10j can't reach anyone and tries to push his table away so he can get some maneuvering room. Str check 1. Still stuck!
K16b, much like K8j, wants to avoid the M.A.f.H in case of bad luck and shoots a dart at Barratore a target he feels comfortable shooting without danger of hitting a friend. Hit AC13.
K11s follows suit in attacking the bigest target around, hit AC4. Unfortunately for him, (%D = 4) his sling goes sailing through the air with his stone and harmlessly bounces off the minotaur's tough hide.
The Slinger Brigade scrambles to keep the enemy from breaching their defenses: K12s spear Att Brom hit AC20, dmg 0, aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgggg! K13s spear Att Brom hit AC16 K15s spear Att Brom hit AC4 (better'n last time by a wee bit)
The last slinger still tries to knock out the minotaur: K14s sling att Barratore hit AC22, dmg 1
The little bonfire dies down some, the oil having burned off and now it's just the flames of the wood.
Spider-Taur Room: Perception 35 Blackie had hoped to clobber the pesky gnome but he scrambled away (OOC: i realized after the post that AoO are negated by Total Concealment, which the Deeper Darkness gives, sigh...)
To it's dismay, the advantage of the darkness and element of surprise is spoiled by the [i]Light[/b] spell of that same pesky gome! But the dwarf seems to have left the room and the Webbed One lingers in the doorway, leaving the gnome all alone.
Snickering and dripping poisonous saliva, it scuttles across the ceiling to N10 and swings a fist at the gnome's head, Slam att hit AC25, dmg 6. It sneers, "Fool! Follow the othes or I'll wrend you to bits!"

DM IC: Lemick tries to squeeze by the swinging axe, sucking his tummy in: Axe swinging by hit AC21 -3 (forgot this was the second swing)= 18.
The axe, slowing in it's swing, nearly takes a button of Lemick's trousers and the priest, timing his casting with the swing, reaches out and touches Barratore for some desperately needed healing.

The battle still rages about Barratores body. On one side the kobolds and fatigue through blood loss and bruising. On the other, a pair of clerics channeling their respective powers into him. Until recently it was an even match. Lemick's last touch of healing though, restores much of Barratores vigor.

DM OOC: Resolving the Spider-Taur Room for now, might as well... :)
DM IC: Harvest drags herself and her wad of tough sticky spider webbing forward to come to Gerox's aid and punches at the black spider-taur hanging from the ceiling. The webs hinder her strike and her fist falls quite a bit short
Taking advantage of Harvest's intervention, Gerox tries to scoot by Harvest and get away from those deadly spider-taur attacks.
Blackie, quickly evaluates the greatest threat and takes a swipe (AoO) at the retreating gnome. (DM OOC: as a highly intelligent creature, posed with two AoO choices, having been hit once by Gerox and the other webbed and already hindered, it is easy for it to make the best choice for AoO target.) AoO Slam Att hit AC21, dmg 4, shoot, minimum damage, oh well, it was a freebee.
(DM OOC: it could be questioned that Harvest provides some cover as Gerox moves through her square. My view is that if the AoO occured when he left Harvest's square to L11, that would make sense. However the AoO occured as he left his square to Harvest's. To my knowledge this creature does not have the feat to give it more than one AoO. Good thing too, eh?)
Gerox, now down to 6 hit points, desperately sends another little ball of flame which, twice in a row, overcomes Blackie's natural Spell Resistance and burns it again.
Crag stops in his tracks when he notices that the call to retreat was a false alarm, again, and he's alone in the dark corridor. He looks back and utters admonishing words to the other two and heads back to see what foolish things they are up to. Crag meets Gerox in the hall when the gnome, bloodied, turns and sends a small ball of fire at the black spider-taur. A whoop from the gnome tells the dwarf the gnome had some success.
Highly Intelligent, Mean-looking, Angry Black Spider-Taur's turn: In a howl of rage, Blackie flashes its sharp fangs at Harvest then steps back from her to O11. "I can wait to dine on you later," it says in a hissing voice (OOC: think Shelob here) and then utters arcane words that send two magical missiles at Gerox!
Magic Missile att 2d4+2 = 7 dmg. (DM OOC: that should put Gerox at -1 I think).

In the Dinning Room, with the javelin, and with Kobolds: (OOC: Sound vaguely familiar?)
Brom lets out some things that can't be printed as he cuts the air into many small fragments.
From earlier: Lemick tries to squeeze by the swinging axe, sucking his tummy in: Axe swinging by hit AC21 -3 (forgot this was the second swing)= 18.
The axe, slowing in it's swing, nearly takes a button of Lemick's trousers and the priest, timing his casting with the swing, reaches out and touches Barratore for some desperately needed healing.
'Course, the axe is still swinging. :)
Bralin exposes his butt to the kobold while he recovers his dropped axe. (DM OOC: picking up an item is a Move Action, you didn't post your Standard Action.) Kobold K8j tries to prick it: AoO hit AC15. (OOC: you were counting on low rolls eh?)
Peza laughs uncontrollably as she keeps moving, seemingly with no true sense of purpose except load and shoot, load and shoot. She reloads Crag's crossbow as she steps over to the squeezed kobold that's been trying to get out from behind his table and points it right at his head. He desperately jabs at her through the gap: AoO hit AC5.
Then he crosses his eyes the bolt as goes deep into his forehead.
Peza continues her maniacle laugh to prove her point.
Barratore finally starts to get a grip on his axe. Maybe it's his burned foot, or the the chilling possibility of an ignominous defeat by lowly kobolds. Either way, his axe this time reaches over the overturned table and takes the life force of another kobold. He then steps over and with fire-walking expertise, ignores the dying flames of the sticks.
DM Note: i had not been aware of the Cover negating AoO. Learn something new everyday.
DM Note: also, I think K11s is 15' away, 2 diag squares from Barratore, however his sling in the middle of the room so i doubt it'll be used again.
Kobolds Turn: DM Note: i've updated the room with the squares in shadow. Bralin's Light spell on his shield reaches 20' and I think the back row is in shadow for now. It didn't matter earlier and i kept forgetting to put that in.
K17b decides that his little corner is not such a good place anymore and decides it is time leave it for better pastures. He moves past his fellows to Z15 and turns to shoot another dart at the minotaur. Hit AC5, (%71, as he brings his blowgun up it hits a table leg and he nearly drops it.)
K4j is not about to face the prospect of being left alone and moves around the tables to Z14. The barbarian seems to be threatening to block his way out so he stabs at it: Flanking Att hit AC4, (%10, blood from his fellow kobold's body causes him to slip and he falls prone)
K8j looses his reasoning and leaves the protection of his overturned table in a desperate attempt to not be the last one left behind by moving to B11 and although hampered by the dead K10j's table, attempts to scare the Mad Amazon from Hell away by poking his javelin at her. Hit AC14-4 squeezed = 10.
K16b finds himself pitted against a crossbow. Blowgun vs Crossbow. He takes a deep breath and blows the dart Peza's way: Hit AC9
K11s, having lost its sling, draws its little spear and moves to Z12 and tries to put the barbarian out of his Happy Kobold Killing Spree: Flanking Att hit AC13.
K9j and K3j keep trying to pin-cushion the barbarian: K9j Flanking hit AC22, dmg 5 K3j Flanking hit AC9
The Slinger Brigade sees blood and yelps in hope and change: K12s spear Flanking Att Brom hit AC11 K13s spear Att Brom hit AC2, (3 N1's?; %83, K13s nearly looses his nerve as he notices the demise of his brother K1j and just barely manages to point his spear at Brom) K15s spear Flanking Att Brom hit AC8
The last slinger still tries to knock out the minotaur: K14s sling att Barratore hit AC12

OoC: If you're looking for a mishap for the Black Spidertaur's Natural 1, I might suggest missed footing. In this case, resulting in a fall from the ceiling. That would result in 1d6 fall damage from 15ft, and it would wind up Prone.
DM Ans: that was my first thought but it has 6 legs so it's not likely that one leg will make a difference and making it loose enough to fall is just too big a penalty for a N1. Now if it had rolled 3 N1's for all its attacks, then I'd go for it.
Also, could you outline the rules governing Natural 1 mishaps as you see them? I've never played with them and would like to know what to expect. DM Ans: I'll see what I can find in the Pathfinder Rules. Usually, since every circumstance is different, I pick something that makes sense or is plausible. Standing in a pool of blood could mean a slip. Fighting next to a stone wall could mean hitting the wall and possibly loosing the grip on the weapon, etc.

CO-DM JonathanT - Kobold Chamber of Horrors: 10 coupons Sunday June 10th, 2012 12:56:59 AM DM Notes on Cover and Reach and Big Creatures: Under Combat scroll down to Big and Little Creatures in Combat, then scroll down to Cover.
Part 1: Cover To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target's square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC). Since these are overturned tables, all lines will pass through a square that blocks line of effect. Comment: my original assessment back on May 28 was looking at a picture that used a Wall. See picture at the end of the Cover segment, right before the Concealment segment.
Part 2; When making a melee attack against an adjacent target, your target has cover if any line from any corner of your square to the target's square goes through a wall (including a low wall). When making a melee attack against a target that isn't adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks. DM Note: see Part 1 above
Part 3: Low Obstacles and Cover: A low obstacle (such as a wall no higher than half your height) provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet (6 squares) of it. The attacker can ignore the cover if he's closer to the obstacle than his target. DM Note: although these 'walls' are low, they are slightly taller than the kobolds so not considered a low obstacle.
Part 4: Cover and Attacks of Opportunity: You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you. DM Note: i'm still not finding where I got that Reach negates Cover.
So, your homework this weekend is to help me find it. :)

For Rum co-DMs only. Highlight to display spoiler: { Sorry for my poor writing skills causing all this trouble. I've never written a module for someone else to use. I also haven't been popping in to check as I should. For that, Jon, I apologize.
1. I've never used the mishaps rules in the Wold, as I found they are really too cumbersome and don't support a 'heroic' campaign. Why would a 20th level Paladin have a 1 in 20 shot of dropping his weapon? Wouldn't such an experienced person be a little better than that? On this and any other optional rules, we need to talk and be on the same sheet of music. Failure to do so will only increase everyone's frustrations.
2. Everything you say about the Kobold's cover is completely accurate. They are smaller, closer to the cover, and have little holes to stab out of. Yep. On the PCs side, all they have to do is breech the obstacle to negate those advantages. This can be as simple as climbing over, or grabbing the table and pulling it out of the way, or smashing the table (hardness 5, hit points 5 Break DC 13)... they aren't nailed down after all. If the Players are getting too frustrated, you could give them a hint on how to breech the obstacle... your choice.
3. The Spidertaur has had all his minions killed. All he wants is to be left alone, and doesn't care one bean for the kobolds. I think he would want to withdraw and let the PCs go. If the PCs don't pursue, he can always escape later.

For Rum co-DMs only: Highlight to display spoiler: { Thanks for chipping in. :) On the N1 topic, I am in total agreement to being on the same page. The concept was that if there was a big bonus for a N20, why not some small penalty for a N1? Since N1's should be as rare as a N20, it should, at best, add some variety to combat but not something that will serioulsy hinder the PCs. That 'small penalty' should be even less as the PC rises in level. Don't even the mightiest PCs sometimes have a foible? Anyway, since there are no published rules for N1, either we do nothing or we come up with a Woldian Standard N1 table.
On the Drider topic, it had looked like they were going to leave well enough alone at one point but three minds were working in three different directions and forced the drider to attack. You'll see I did everything to 'scare' them away and avoid a battle. I think I may be getting through now, well see.}
SteveK Highlight to display spoiler: { All else good. For the N1, I think after this battle, we set up that there is no penalty for N1. }
Harvest Moon (HP19/18; CMD 18 / AC-See Combat Info at End of Post) - Al Sunday June 10th, 2012 8:53:37 PM
OoC: Too big a penalty? You took out Peza's primary weapon as a Natural 1 penalty. If you can do that, surely a tiny 10ft fall is a small thing for a creature with an estimated 30+hp.
DM Note: like i said eariler, loosing footing was my first thought, but we are dealing with six. So if you really want it, i'll give it to ya.
Blackie looses his footing from one leg. His movement across the ceiling is now hampered for that round by 1/6th of his movement rate. His other five legs remain firmly attached to the ceiling giving him the stability he needs to keep from falling.
Bralin the Stonesinger(AC 21, 20/25 hp) d20+6=7 ; Sunday June 10th, 2012 8:54:16 PM

OOC: As I wait, I have a request from my fellow players. If you start an email plan, post a quick mention of it in one of the posts here. I don't check my gaming email very often (maybe once every 2-3 weeks) so letting me know will help me contribute to the discussion.

Let's see what happens. In the mean time, Let's stick with Cover negating AoO. And there is a very simple way to deal with those tables.
2) SteveK and I discussed the N1 issue and decided to drop any N1 penalties after this battle. If you guys want some flavor and add an N1 penalty of sorts, we can discuss some few small things. Although 'breaking of bow/crossbow string has been a standard for eons, it does seem a bit harsh. There are plenty of foibles that can happen to add flavor without crippling a PC.
Now to the slaughter.
WLA'ers Strike Back: Kobold Room: Brom remembers a successfull maneuver from earlier and tries it again. He uses his brute strength to push the table in front of him against the wall. He easily succeeds, as these tables are 'small' in comparison. However he has to let his guard down while doing so. K12s AoO hit AC7 K13s AoO hit AC15
Brom's strength is enough to pin the table against the wall, but not break it. DM OOC: DC13 to break
Peza, still seemingly crazed, pegs the blowgunner. Of course, this opens her up to K8j's AoO, but she's only got one thing on her mind. Shen then moves up, ignoring K8j. K8j AoO hit AC12
Barratore feels he's got the Mojo now and swings his axe at K11s but the table foils the blade. DM Note: See Part 3 above: these are not Low Obstacles with respect to the Kobolds. If the Kobolds were taller by 2x, then their cover would be negated.
Lemick keeps testing the strength of the wooden tables.
Bralin hears Gerox come around the corner and turns to warn him of the axe trap, causing him to miss horribly.
Spider-Taur Room: Harvest gives Crag some healing in preparation for worse to come then suggests a retreat. Gerox does so and she steps back.
Gerox retreats all the way back to the axe trap hallway. The axe gently swings a wee bit in the middle of the short hallway. Gerox stops before running into it. Seeing Peza, he calls to her to return and help them against Blackie, then takes a look around.
Crag, discouraged by the difficulty in getting his axe past Blackie's defenses, halfheartedly swings his axe and misses.
Their turn: Spider-Taur Room The Solid-looking, Non-glowing, spider-shaped black thing on the ceiling threatening Crag knows how deadly that axes can be and is not confident the dwarf's axe will keep on missing. It sends a glob of spider webs at the dwarf. Range Touch hit AC14. Crag gets engulfed in webs. It then steps back to be out of reach of the axe. An entangled creature takes a --2 penalty on attack rolls and a --4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check or burst the web with a Strength check. Both are standard actions with a DC18. Attempts to burst a web by those caught in it suffer a -4 penalty.
Kobold Room: K8j finds himself in a desperate situation, surrounded on all sides. His escape route is blocked by [/b]Peza[/b] so that obstacle needs to be removed. Att Peza hit AC9.
K11s still seesBrom as blocking their escape route and attacks the barbarian despite having a mad woman breathing down his back. Flanking Att hit AC16+2= 18, dmg 0. (OOC: figures)
K15s sees the battle going pretty bad and steps away from Brom into the dark passage behind him.
K12s and K13s trie to escape from their tight spot: K12s Dex check = 17, success. K12s moves to X15 (still with Cover) then to Y14 and stabs at Brom. Hit AC7. K13s Dex check = 14, success. It moves to X12 where K15s had been and stabs at Brom. Hit AC3.
K4j, still prone, tries to scratch Brom's foot. Flanking hit AC5 +2 -4 = 3.
Lemick 4-Leaf Sted/Anthony hp 13/16, ac 20/12/18 d20+1=3 ; Monday June 11th, 2012 8:31:24 AM
Lemick's energy is apparently tapped out as he swings wild again, this time missing even missing the table which surround 50% of him. In response to his failure, Lemick looks afraid of the kobold, he takes a 5' step back (B15) -- goading the kobold to follow (OOC: thus giving Barratore an AOO).
OOC: What type of action would it be to flip the tables flat side down? Move, standard, free? Would it create an AOO?
DM Ans: it would be a Move action if you have a free hand. Just roll a STR check. No AoO in this case. It would would require a 5' Step back since you are pulling it towards you (thus Move but not The 5' Step). The flat side down will then occupy your previous space. However, if you choose, you can then, with Another Move, make the 5' step forward again, standing on the bottom side of the table top. You loose your attack for the round but hey, they loose their Cover. Sound right?

The web. It is very difficult to move or fight or even to defend one's self within the web. She and Crag Hammerfist will be at a disadvantage. And yet ... Perhaps ... If it cannot be easily slain ...
"Your spider kin attacked us," accuses Harvest Moon. "They stole our people. We are pledged to slay you so that it will not happen again."
"But if you promise," she continues, "if you pledge not to attack us. If you explain why you attacked and why you are here now, then it is possible that we may leave. We may then live in peace."
"Otherwise, we will wait, Crag Hammerfist and I. We will wait for the others. They will come. You cannot defeat all of us. I have seen your room. You cannot escape. We will win, and it is you who will die."

DM OOC: gonna take care of the Spider room now, then when Gerox posts, take care of the kobold room.
Harvest sees that a quick retreat now is not possible with both her and Crag webbed. Their slow movement, hampered defense and attacks, put them in at a big disadvantage. So Harvest tries to buy themselves some time by Parleying.
Crag drags himself towards Harvest as she tries to buy themselves some time.

After eyeing the two intently for a moment, Blackie responds in Common: "They aren not My kin. Although I can, and do, control them somewhat, as no one else has the will, or courage, to do so, I don not dictate what food they can or can't eat. I know not where or how they got those humans. But I don't think that will be happening again. Look for yourself and see if they will be a nuisance to you in the future."
It looks at the two, with some scorn, to discern if they can put two and two together, then continues.
"I can only promise for myself. I can not speak for the kobolds or any other Spider-Taurs, not that they can really speak even for themselves. I have no interest in you or your puny city. I survive by wit, cunning, and force, but I don't have grandiouse ambitions to conquer the Sunlit Lands. I am 'here' because the kobolds are weak. But even they are not free."
It chuckles a sickly hissing, spider-type of chuckle.
"Peace? You will not have it. But not from me. The Lords will see to that. What do I care? I care for myself! If you Swear the Oath to leave me be, I Swear the Oath to leave you, your friends, and your dirty, verming infested, goblin puke of a town in Peace as well. And don not look at me like that! Is it not true? Look at your town. I have seen cities of the poorest of my kind that are pallaces in comparison to what lies above. You can only Hope and Pray that it can hold itself together long enough to survive its first year. For enough lies above to squash your precious town even without the Lords."
It gives out a hiddeous laugh at what it perceives your futile attempt to establish a colony.
"So. What will it be? You say you have friends and will wait until they come to your aid. If you do that, all they'll find is your corpses. The noise of their battle with the kobolds is plain to hear from here and it would seem to be holding them up too long to be of much help for you. I will leave, given you take the Oath you proposed and I in turn will give the Oath I stated.
It awaits your answer.

DM OOC: taking care of Kobolds...
Lemick has difficulty striking K17b, the table legs just keep getting in the way as it ducks here and there. He steps back to see if the kobold will follow. DM OOC: If you intended a Feint maneuvre, that's a Bluff check vs Sense Motive and is a Standard Action. Doesn't mean the kobold won't follow anyway, but there is a difference.
K12s' escape from the table is short lived as Brom catches him in the ear with a sharp point of his kukri. The point goes deeeeeeep.
With Gerox showing up, Peza's concern over Harvest causes her to loose her concentration on the battle at hand and start back towards the spider toom, ignoring K8j, who takes advantage of the her lack of concentration: K8j AoO: Trip attack CMD DC18 = 6 (OOC: well, I had to try) (DM OOC: i know, a Trip usually creates an AoO from the Tripped, but I don't think an AoO can cause an AoO can it? And can an AoO be a Trip? An AoO is a melee attack and a Trip attack can be used in place of a melee attack and she is running right by. Any way, he missed. But it is a good question. What do you guys think?) DM Note: loading a crossbow is a Move action. Can you load one while moving? Is there a Feat for that? Considering the 'effects' Peza is under (which the PC's in the room don't really know yet), she would not load the crossbow, but take the double move. But if she can Move and Load, let me know.
Bralin gets bumped as Peza runs by and misses. :P
Gerox his small frame next to the dangerously sharp and bloody but immobile axe, tries to look VEWY imposing and cower the kobolds into submission. Intimidate 3 vs DC10. The Gnome's power to intimidate the kobolds is drowned out by the chaos that swarms about him and the bump he takes as Peza charges by yelling something about Saving Private Harvest.
Barratore barely misses his kobold.
OK, let's see what did, didn't, or could work.
Those cowardly kobolds turn: K8j sees the opening left by Peza's retreat and stabs at Bralin before taking a step back to Z11. Hit AC17
K13s vanishes into the dark passage.
K11s is rather content to be hidding from the minotaur and stays put, but stabbing at Brom: hit AC4.
K4j, still prone, has total cover from the minotaur, who may have forgotten that he's there. But he still tries to stab Brom. Prone attack hit AC10-4=6
K14s, drops his sling and steps to X14 while pulling out his little spear and attacks Brom. Flanking att hit AC11+2 = 13. (DM Note: K14s has partial cover from the table (+2, not +4) but is still in Dim light.)
k17b, whose goal was head to the back of the room, does not follow Lemick's ruse but tries to be the hero and attacks Barratore. Hit AC13

OoC: Yes, an AoO attempt can trigger another AoO. AoO's come before the event that triggers them. So, in this case, Peza would have an AoO before the Trip attempt prompted by her AoO.
That said, Peza is holding a ranged weapon and nothing but a ranged weapon. This being the case, she can take no AoO's.
DM Resp: heh, that's why I thought to try something different, knowing she had the range weapon in hand. But the question still bugged me so I threw it out there.

There is more here than is upon the surface. The still surface of a tarn is a sign of depths unseen.
"You will have my pledge, Black Spiderkin." Harvest Moon eyes this Not-Kin-of-Spider with greater interest. There are many things that he has spoken of that must be known. The Fixers will wish to know. She herself, now that she thinks of it, wishes to know.
She has seen Gerox Shale speak with honeyed words, and she now tries this herself. But is clearly a trick to this, a trick that she does not know. The words do not come out as she intends. This draws a low growl of annoyance from her which only seems to make things worse.
"I will swear this oath. But first you must tell us of these Lords. Who are these Lords of which you speak? And tell us of the spiderkin. You say that you are not as they. But you live with them. How did you and they come to be here, then, amongst the small-eyed kobolds?"
"I am Harvest Moon and I will swear my oath. But I would have these answers first before I do so." A noise stirs from behind. It is Peza. This is good. "You are the one who is trapped. It is you who must answer. Quickly. The others come."

OOC: Parents now gone on to Branson, Missouri, to meet friends.
Kobold Room first: Brom manages to see two small glowing missiles streak towards him and smack him in the side burning his flesh and slices his kukri at the kobold form slinking in the shadows at X12. He hears the kobold's exclamation of pain as fresh blood drips from his weapon. Brom thinks about the possibility of taking one alive, however that may be difficult since each hit has killed the poor guy, except that last one. DM Note: i didn't put him on the map because he'll be retreating this round.
Barratore lets Brom take care of the newcomer and tries to finish off k17b but misses.
Peewee Gerox once more tries to influence the kobolds to give up. You can only threaten an opponent in this way if they are within 30 feet and can clearly see and hear you. DM Note: according to the map, it looks like only two can see you, K11s and K14s and K14s is too far away. K4j is prone behind the table and K8j and K17b are out of Line of Sight. Also, an Intimidate causes Shaken condition, not necessarily a moral check. Oddly enough, I can't find any rule regarding Morale Check conditions. So I'll use my DM prerogative here.
Lemick gives a mighty heave to the table next to him and then steps forward. DM Note: that's two moves. You get to waste your 19 next round. My previous description was from the point of view that the tables were between the two. Although Lemick isn't, I think you can see that knocking the table over would still cosntitute a Move. And then the 5' step is a Move.
Bralin follows Peza, only the gods know why.
Spider room: Harvest continues the Parley, buying time, and tries some persuasion of her own. She senses that the Black Inelligent Spider-Taur is sincere in wanting to leave well enough alone and be on its way. Not so much because of the party's threat, but more so that it is tired of the place.
Peza move right up behind Harvest and keeps encouraging her friends to leave as it can only end badly, for them.
Harvest points out to the ranger that she believes her to be under a spell. Is that like trying to convince someone who is paranoid that no one is following him? DM Note: Good try. Doesn't hurt. Yet.
Peza replies to her friend that she does feel somewhat odd at what she's doing but nonetheless the danger of death looms very real over her and extending to her friends. DM Note: good role-playing. The others need to keep in mind what has transpired so far: Gerox being knocked unconscious; Harvest nearly so; Crag having a hard time hitting; spell resistance; etc.
Their Turn: Spider-Taur Room: Blackie stares incredulously at Harvest. "What?! Already changing our Oath? I complied as stated, now you add more conditions?! Is your word not worth a kobold's turd? I explained the nature of the attack on your town. I pledge not to attack you, your friends, or the town. That was the Oath! I owe you nothing more."
He steps forward 5' and eyes Harvest, its eyes spider-like, not humanoid-like, and says, in a less threatning tone, "If you want to know of the Lords, ask the kobolds. I have nothing to do with them. I come and go as I please. I am Drys and my word is Worthy. Don't play games with me. You'll swear your Oath as you stated it First or it is worth Nothing."
Harvest and Crag only read following: Highlight to display spoiler: { Since Diplomacy is starting to take place, you two need to know that Drys has used Intimidate: Change your Attitude towards it. Previous secret roll was 29 vs your highest DC of 10 + the target's Hit Dice (highest level between you two,not both added) + the target's Wisdom modifier (probably Harvest's). See DM secret roll 2 on June 11. Although it takes 1 minute for its full effects to take place, you already started Diplomacy, so that indicates a change in attitude, or sorts. If you can't beat the 29, then you'll have to change your stance from Hostile to Unfriendly this next round.}
Peza only read following: Highlight to display spoiler: { Drys initiated Intimidate: Change Attitude two rounds ago and the effects are still in play. See DM secret roll 2 on June 11. As Peza is under the Suggestion spell, she already has an Attitude change towards Drys. Since Diplomacy was started by Harvest, that indicates a willingness on the party's part to change attitude as well, somewhat. So, If Peza can beat 29 with her DC of 10 + the target's Hit Dice (you) + the target's (you) Wisdom modifier, then her attitude remains unchange as from before. But if not, her attitude changes one step more favorable towards Drys.}
Bralin, sorry, you are not close enough if your speed is 20. If it is more, then read Harvest and Crag's spoiler, if you can understand Common. If not, ignore the spoilers.
DM Note: if you have any questions on this, and I won't be surprised if you do, feel free to ask. This is Uncharted Territory here.
Off to the Kobold room: BTW, your main light source just ran out of the room following Peza. I've been playing as if Barratore had put the lantern away since Bralin cast the light spell on his shield. If Barratore still holds the lantern, then the back wall is lit. If he does not still hold it, then the room is dark!
Playing as if the room is Dark: A rush of kobolds fly by Brom who probably will be yelling out some stuff I can't print. DM Note: Total Concealment negates AoO.
Playing as if the Barratore still holds the Lantern: K14s steps to X13 and attacks Brom, hit AC17, dang close, eh? K8j steps to Y12 and attacks Brom, hit AC9 K17b steps to Y14 and attacks Brom, Flanking, hit AC5+2=7. K4j remains prone attacking Brom, hit AC19-4=15. K11s is Shaken. Using DM's prerogative for Gerox's Intimidation effects, he drops his weaon and cowers behind the table.
DM Notes: Play your turns accordingly to the light. I didn't find where Barratore would have put the lantern away, but I don't know if he's been using both hands with his axe. So post as fits the light.

"No, you are wrong." The Black Spiderkin is clearly very powerful. Harvest Moon fights against the fear of it. It would be so much easier to do as Peza wishes and simply allow the Black Spiderkin passage to leave. It does not seem as though it will bother the people of Rum again. And yet, the need is great. Even the powerful Fixers are troubled by the signs. Here is the means to find out more. Such a chance must not be wasted.
"You are wrong. I did not swear the oath yet. I asked you to swear first. I will swear not too. But first you must speak. Who are these Lords?"
From behind, more sound. A quick look reveals Bralin the Stonesinger.
"Quickly. More come. I cannot swear for them. Do not think that you are so powerful that you can stand against us all. Speak and you may leave."

Crag stops and thinks for a quick moment, perhaps swayed by the spidertaur, perhaps not. He may not be the smartest Dwarf, but his wisdom has always been his strength, and he tries to rely on it now.
The Dwarf lowers his axe. "I think the call is his Harvest. If he does not wish to tell us more, nothing will change that. We can fight him, that's true. Then either he will die, or we will, but still we will not have our answers. If we do manage to kill him, how many of us will die in the process in our depleted conditions?"
"He has given us some information, and says the Kobolds know more, some of which are being interrogated by the fixers now. Perhaps our paths will cross in the future, and we may speak with less hostility, perhaps not. If it wishes to be on it's way from here, i am for accepting it's word, and giving it ours."
The Dwarf looks to the human girl, waiting for her reply. Very interested in her reaction to this situation. funny it is that one so little, and so young, has this choice to make, but the offer made was hers, and the first attempt at a peaceful resolution was also hers.

The kobolds, may they rest in peace...
DM OOC: I confess i got all caught up in the excitment and did a booboo. Whereas Barratore's Intimidation was by pure violence, something the kobolds understand real well, Gerox's was intimidation by Words of warning of dire death, something the kobolds would understand if they knew Common, but they don't. However, only one was 'affected', so to speak, and in staying within the spirit of the module, the resulting events are appropriate.
Barratore strugles once more with his aim and just misses.
Brom, in defending himself, overreaches his own swing and misses.
Lemick kills another table and is clearly winning the Battle of the Tables. DM OOC: it reminds me of Snoopy wrestling with the lawn chair in Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving Special.
Gerox finally moves into the room and thinks to sheed more light to kill by (DM OOC: i'm going to presume you cast it on the floor). However, it was his Light spell that was on the stone that Barratore had dropped on the floor (DM OOC: April 2nd post) and the little stone blinks out. (DM OOC: if you don't want it on the floor at B13, you gotta tell me where)
Spider Room: DM OOC: good role-playing. You are keeping it interesting.
Harvest has a battle of Wills going on within herself and tries to play a game of words with the Black Spider-Taur. She hasn't asked it what she has in her pocketsss yet, though.
Crag, wizened by years and battle, seems to understand the situation far better than his young and restless monastic companion.
Bralin moves up closer in hopes of seeing further into the room and figure out what's going on or what's holding up the fight.
Peza may not have the grasp of the situation as well as the dwarf, but to her that is not necessary. She knows when she's walking on thin ice and that the slightest sneeze could crack the surface.
The Kobolds, They LIVE!: DM OOC: I was under the impression that Aid Another was a straight up D20 roll, however the rule says You make an attack roll against AC 10 and says nothing about not applying your appropriate bonuses. How have you guys been doing it? For now, I'm doing it they way I've been doing it, straight up d20, no bonuses added.
The tables are turning on the kobolds and they fight back as best they can. Their lives depend upon it. :) K4j, k8j, K14s try to aid K17b in its attack on Brom. Aid another in order: 19 (arrrrrgh), 12, 1.
K17b uses his compadre's help in distracting Brom to try to break through the barbarian's defenses. Flanking Att + 4 Aid Another bonus hit AC15+6=21 The kobolds cheer as their buddy draws blood, dmg 3.
K14s decides he's had enought and steps into the shadows. K17b steps to X13. K4j finally realizes his table is gone and that there's a huge minotaur looming over him. He drops his little javelin and whimpers.
K8j steps to Z11, realizing there's no way out the other way.
K11s stays put.
Blackie's Response: Drys glares at Harvest for a moment then turns to Crag. "I've always known dwarves to be good fighters and sometimes wizer than their brawn would suggest. You heard her just moments ago make a deal. Oh, 'You are wrong' she says. 'I proposed the deal but didn't swear it.' So that gives her the right to change it as she sees fit? I must swear it first so she can keep changing the conditions? She has a lot to learn, does she not?
Drys eyes Peza and says, "You know the Glowing One. It guards all that I have. It awaits in the Darkness. But I keep it at bay until the Final Breath of Live of your friends is at hand.
The group hears a low, chilling moan coming from the dark entry into Drys' chamber.
"It calls for your Breath now, but I wish not to unleash it. I will send it back to its Plane once the Oath is taken. But that's up to YOU, Drys jerks his head back again to Harvest, young lady. Listen to the dwarf and your lady friend. If I'm dead, you'll know nothing more than you know now. If you are dead, well, then, you'll be just another wasted life.
I already gave my word that I would leave you, your friends, and your Town alone. Peace hangs on your head. Are you willing to risk the lives of your friends, or even just one, for a few moments of gory battle?
Drys has said his piece. The Battle of Wills continues...

OoC: Yes, to Brom's question:
"Aid Another
In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent's next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack."
Also, Kobold17 is not flanking with anyone vs Brom. Try applying this rule.
"When in doubt about whether two characters flank an opponent in the middle, trace an imaginary line between the two attackers' centers. If the line passes through opposite borders of the opponent's space (including corners of those borders), then the opponent is flanked."

OOC: going ahead with the Spider-Room:
Either Harvest is trying a bluff or she is brave beyond her wisdom. Either way, she suggests sending someone back to the surface to warn the Fixers while she stays put, presumably watching the Spider-Taur until it complies to her demands.
And, of course, they aren't supposed to worry about her.
And, of course, she still does not believe the semi-transparent faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape is real, or the moaning sounds they all heard is real.
Bralin, finding his talents wasted in a diplomatic standoff, wonders if he could be of use elsewhere.
Crag clearly shows his determination to stay and protect the stubborn monk.
Peza, on the other hand, is not taking any chances and continues to urge Harvest to give the Oath and let Drys pass. The sense of danger growing stronger. DM OOC: you said 'a step back', however Bralin doesn't move, so, instead of moving you 2 sqs., I'll take the 'step' to be a 1ft step and keep you in the same square.
Dyr's Turn: Dry's crosses his arms in front of his chest and yawns at Harvest's threat. For Drys sees her obstinace as a clear threatning attitude. "I've got all day and you don't," Drys smirks, then the semi-transparent faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape moves out of the darkness and towards Crag. "My guardian is begginning to loose patience," Drys adds with a smirk and moves to intercept it at M10. "Do not test its patience overmuch," Drys warns as the moaning sound is clear and strong, coming from right behind the spider-taur.

Peza is so intent on pulling Harvest back, she doesn't notice it either. Harvest and Crag are too immersed in their discussion that the noise is drowned out to their ears.

Will Save 13 Succeed.
BTW, how do you justify not giving Harvest and Crag a Perception check against the Kobold? There is line of sight. There is light from the Ioun Torch. You can't just declare that they are too involved.
Isn't the point of Perception a degree of acuity that warrants detection regardless of distractions? Applying a penalty, I can see. Negating it entirely despite the lack of physical obstacles strikes me as wrong. Why not apply a penalty and let the roll decide?
DM Ans: sometimes I get too descriptive, but if logic is what's needed: 1) only Bralin declared a Perception check 2) the Stealth roll itself 3) sometimes the DM has to decide, according to what is going on, if indeed the PCs, all, or some, get a Perception Roll when the PC's did not originally roll one. 3.1) there is still a battle going on not too far behind, where anything can happen, so it should be very reasonable to expect Perc rolls each round, but it must be stated. 3.2)There is still danger right in front, a Perc roll each round to make sure Drys isn't trying to pull something is reasonable to expect, but it must be stated. 3.3) if rolls aren't stated, then the DM has the prerogative to decide, according to the circumstances, whether it is reasonable for a particular PC to be attentive enough to warrant the Perc roll. In this case, it is clear from the posts, that Harvest is totally focused on Drys. Crag is focused on Harvest, and Peza is totally focused on getting everyone out of the room.
I had to sit and think out the process before anything happened and came to the said conclusion. It wasn't just a flippant decision.
But if you wish to do so, I calculated the base DC for Harvest, Crag, and Peza, to be, according to the circumstances, 20, using the rules. Per the rules, the penalties that I found added another 13, for a total of DC33.

Gerox moves further into the room, confident he won't be in danger, and tries to keep K114s from escaping into the darkness by casting his Magic Missile spell. K14s rells and teeters, but stays standing.

OOC: I wanted to toss in my two cents on the conditional save sequence. Let's use Sleep as an example. Sleep affects 4HD worth of creatures. Saves from sleep are not conditional in that it does not matter if some saves or not the amount of HD are used. So, Harvest and Peza are "affected" but just don't fall asleep. The spell does not continue until it has succeeded in getting 4 HD.
Therefore a sleep spell at Peza and Harvest would only affect them whether or not they fell asleep

DM OOC: Sleep: ...Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first. Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell's point of origin are affected first. ...
Maybe I'm miss-reading the spell, but it has an area effect of 10' radius. You have to choose those closest to the center point first. If one does not qualify, the spell is not wasted, he just isn't affected, and so the closest one that qualifies goes next.
The way I read it, if one that qualifies makes its save, why should that cancel out some HD worth of the spell? The way I read it, if one makes a save, those HD are not used up and the next one outward from the point of origin has to save, ect.
It doesn't seem clear what exacly happens to those HD from one that makes a save. I'll put it up on the rule's board.

DM OOC: it is hard to keep flipping back and forth between CS and Pathfinder rules and everything else. That's where you guys help me out. I just stated where the spell started and who would be first to be affected. It's up to you guys to remember those fine details about your PCs. :)

Part C: DM OOC: since there's some question on the Sleep spell and one response to that on the Rules board. To keep the game moving, I'll go with the consensus so far that the Sleep spell 'targets' those closest to the point of origin (ignoring those that do not qualify - 5HD or >) until the 4HD or fraction thereoff are 'used up'. If those targeted make their save, that's it. The spell's HD does not carry over to the next.
In that light (not the spell), the Sleep spell targeted Peza and Harvest only as they add up to 4HD. Peza failed, Harvest made it. That's it. Bralin does not need to roll a save, and Crag made it anyway, so I'm moving on to Round 1 - their initiative.
Quick replay of the Surprise Round: While the group was distracted by Drys and Harvest's standoff, a kobold snuck out of the secret door in the cubby-square and cast a Sleep spell targeted between Peza and Harvest. Results you already know.
Start of Regular rounds: The spellcasting kobold vanishes back into the cubby-square. In its place step two kobold slingers (Bralin has seen them before, but hey, they all look the same, right?) and try to ping Bralin with sling stones. K13s att hit AC6 K15s att hit AC22, Non-Lethal dmg 1 (See Combat-Damage-Minimum Damage)
OOC: this should catch us up, sort of. Anyway, it's your turn. Gulp. BTW, Drys' initiative will be after the party's.

With a Kobold here, a kobold there, everywhere a kobold, E-I, E-I, OH.
DM OOC: to answer Gerox's question, the tied up kobolds were taken back to the surface when the rescued villager was taken back.
Gerox the Commander, issues orders to have the remaining two kobolds tied up then goes to see how the others are faring. Reaching the 'T' intersection sees that there are kobolds there also! He sends a ray of fire (DM OOC: you should be pretty near out of those, right? Count them up from back at the guard room battle and some were used while you were gone.) towards it, engulfing it in flames.
Barratore tosses the table hiding K11s clear across the room and it crashes in a heap against the wall. It felt like a childs toy table and it's a wonder the minotaur hadn't done this a long time ago. He then eyes the two remaining kobolds with the 'Evil Eye', weapon poised.
Brom hears Harvest's call for help and goes running but finds his way towards Harvest blocked by a smoking kobold. (DM OOC: Bralin's light on his shield covers row 11, so you see the kobold and can stop at F12. However, you do have to dodge the axe, so maybe that little hic-up sets you back enough not to be able to reach F12 in 1 Move(?). I try to label the map to show stuff but if that was not clear enough I'm sorry. :}
Lemick motions to 'the kobold to lie down' (DM OOC: the one in front of you is prone, I think that means he's lying down already. The other one was curled into a ball. Maybe you're motioning to that one? .
Spider-Taur Room:
Crag holds his ground and waits for the the outcome of Harvest vs. Drys.
A binkini clad female kobold appears out of nowhere holding a square board with a number on it, 4, and trots around the room for a few moments and when a bell is heard, she vanishes.
Harvest is quick to notice Peza succumbing to the Sleep spell and tries to wake her friend up. Turning to Drys, she tries to convince Drys to spill the beans. Then she calls to her friends in the kobold room for help.
Bralin charges the newly arrived kobolds and misses the pointy parts of their ears jutting above their heads by 'that much'.
Peza's eyes start to flutter and a yawn errupts in the midts of the chaos around her.
Drys realizes something unusual is happening in the background and moves to O11 to see what's going on. This might be its opportunity to make a break for it. It points a finger at Harvest and a corruscating ray springs forth from its finger towards the stubborn woman. Range Touch Att Hit AC15, dmg 13 strength. Harvest takes a penalty to STR of 13. Since your STR can't drop below 1, that would put your STR at 1.
Drys then adresses Crag, "I meant what I said! I could have seriously hurt her, but I only weakened her to help her see I mean to stay true to my end of the Oath. If she, or you, or your other friends attack me, then it will hurt pretty bad next time."
The the semi-transparent faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape moves one step closer but does not attack.
Kobolds Turn, Kobold Room: K11s seems to undertand Lemick's hand motion and uncurles and lays flat. K4j stays prone nursing a bloody leg.
It would seem like things are under control. But rarely are things as they seem. Charging out from the dark corridor come a hord of four kobolds yapping and yelling and making all kinds of rucus.
K14s had been teetering but looks healed, K17b is the blowgunner, K1g and K2g look a bit tougher than the other two and are carrying slings and spears.
They all go after the main threat in the room, Barratore: K14s sling att hit AC20, dmg 1 K1g sling att hit AC7 K2g sling att hit AC21, dmg 3 K17b blowgun att hit AC8
In the hall: K13s teeters and has nowhere else to go. So it attacks Brom with spear, hit AC15, then collapses.
K15s, seeing his friend collaps, steps over to F11 and tries to vindicate it by stabbing his spear at Brom as well, hit AC10.
K3g, a tougher looking kobold, steps past the kobold spell caster and takes a swipe with his spear at Bralin, hit AC14.

Lemick complies by grabbing K4j by his good leg and drags the kobold to Z15 and gives somehow imparts to them the idea that if they move, they die.
Barratore then moves forward to put an end to the new threat, and thanks the gods we got rid of the N1 penalties until the gods can come to some reasonable decision without embroiling the Wold in a war.
K17b and K14s chatter something to the other two and they all drop their missile weapons and drawing their spears, move a step forward and meet the minotaur, tiny claw to large hoof. K14s steps to Y15, K17b steps to Y14 and K1g steps to Y13. K2g steps out of the shadows to X13.

Taking care of Kobolds Part B DM OOC: it was brought to my attention the unusual STR dmg of the Ray of Enfeeblement. Aww shucks. It was late and etc. The STR dmg has been corrected and no ill feelings. I hope. :)
Hallway: Crag verifies that Harvest is indeed alive and 'well', so to speak, and sees that, with kobolds flanking them, it would not be a good idea to have a two fronted battle. His warrior's training and years of xperience is best suited alive than dead, so he gives his word to let Drys go by and calls to the others to do the same.
Harvest, weakened to the strength of a mere child, reluctantly gives in, but not with a last word of warning. Shall the twain meet again? Perhaps, but they part with a grudge that will last a long time.
Peza, awake and ready to take out the kobold spellcaster, looks for her target as Harvest inches by. Her relief that Drys will be gone doesn't show yet, the adrenaline of the battle keeping it down.
Drys, from the ceiling, bows to Crag and as he passes the dwarf, it says "I'll remember you to be Honorable. I'll remember her... well, I'll remember her." Scuttling along the ceiling, with Peza and Harvest ducking to let it pass, it turns into the kobold guard room and vanishes into the darkness. As soon as Dyrs is out of sight, the semi-transparent faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape vanishes.
Bralin, angered at the smarting red welts the spellcaster gave him, takes his anger out on K3g (not K3s). Blood goes everywhere but this one's a toughy.
Brom calls for a regrouping, seeing that they are getting far to spread out, again. His attack on K15s misses.
Gerox nearly plunges his friends into darkness, only quick thinking prevents that. His other light spell, Dancing Lights do well enough. (DM OOC: I can't place the 4th one at G10 until Gerox can get a Line of Sight to it. Therefore the 4th will double at G11.)
Their Turn: K15s keeps Brom at bay and stabs at the barbarian, hit AC3. K3g, eyes of determination, keep trying to break through Bralin's hard shell, hit AC16.
The kobold spellcaster sees Bralin take a chunk out of his bodyguard and growls angrily at the dwarf, pointing his little wand again, sending forth another two magical missiles. Magic Misslie dmg = 7.

"I ... I am fine, Peza." Instead of the question that had contained the substance of her inner conflict, instead of this question, Harvest Moon replies simply, "I am fine."
They must now escape. At least one of them must return with word of the mysterious Lords.
"Barratore Steelwind?" calls out Harvest Moon. It would be good were his voice to answer from the direction of the pit trap and the way back home. But the immediate thing will be to fight through these Small-eyes who bar Brom's way and divide him from joining with Bralin the Stonesinger. They must persevere, and to this end, Harvest Moon once again puts into service the wand of Torian Silverleaf. Part of the weakness, the heaviness lifts away from Harvest Moon. It feels good to be stronger again. Harvest Moon pushes past Bralin the Stonesinger, bringing with her the light.
"You will not hurt my friend," she growls up the side passage. Then, with a quick, impulsive move, she veers into the passage, and with a shoulder down, rushes through the Small-eyes, overrunning it even as it strikes at her opportunistically.
"Shoot this one, Peza," she calls out. Then, "You will regret attacking us." And Harvest Moon reaches out and snatches the wand from the hand of the Small-eyes.

CO-DM JonathanT - Kobold Chamber of Horrors: a deal with strings attached Saturday June 23rd, 2012 11:31:03 PM DM Notes: take a look and see if I see things right. A) Harvest: Overun is a Standard Action. Disarm is an 'attack', ie Standard Action. You can't do both, I would think. You make it to G9 just fine.
B) Lemick: you Move (B14-B13-A12), cast a spell (is this a Tatoo? Is it a Command-word-magic item? What action is used to activate it? Activating a magic 'item' usually is a Standard action.) then attack. It would help the DM to be a bit more descriptive, like 'slap tatoo', or something. Otherwise the DM won't know how the spell comes about. I tried looking at Lemick's CS to see if it is a tatoo, but it kept locking up my PC.
BTW, Barratore is big but not THAT big. EIther k14s or K1g can see you, depending on which square you active the whatever.

Peza, having missed the kobold spellcaster due to the intervention of a kobold bodyguard. Taking a spear in the side, sh snarls and reloeads, but by the time she is ready to fire, the kobold spellcaster is gone. It stabs at her again. She dodges the pointy stick and shoots the bodyguard, point-blank.
AoO before he dies: hit AC14
Her shot is on the mark and the kobold goes down.
New Round Kobold Hall of Doom: DM Note: Since K4g is now dead, Harvest does not need to expend her Standard Action on the Overun and can use her Standard Action to Disarm.
The Enfeeblement spell wears off Harvest and she feels 'invigorated' or perhaps wanting to vent some anger over Drys onto a kobold. Either way, she shuffles her spiderweb-entwined form past Bralin and Peza and over the dead kogold bodyguard and into the short hallway that formed when the secret door was opened. She sees the kobold spellcaster just around the corner and swipes at the little stick-thingy-that-sends-hurting-stings. The sudden brazen move must have caught the kobold offguard as Harvest slaps the wand out of the kobolds hand, sending it flying. The act was so unexpected that Harvest's slap also knocked the kobold's spear out of his other hand. (DM OOC: Disarm_ If your attack exceeds the CMD of the target by 10 or more, the target drops the items it is carrying in both hands. No AoO since it lost it's weapon).
Bralin is left behind once more to watch the women do all the hard work.
Peza reloads the crossbow and although she knows where the kobold spellcaster is, she can't see it. She shoots the dying bodyguard again and it is realy dead now.
Crag moves to the 'T' section and watches for anything that might come up from the main entrance.

Lemick leaves the kowarding kobold and circles around Barratore, activating his Mirror Image while moving, and mutliple images of himself confront K1g. I guess he didn't know which one of himself was supposed to hit and they all miss.

With Black Spiderkin Drys now gone, it is time to shed the entangling webs. Harvest Moon gives a mighty shrug. Even in her current state, weakened by the Small-eyes poison, she is able to burst the bonds of the web.
Now is time to press the advantage. She transfers the captured wand to the hand holding the wand of Torian Silverleaf. Will she be able to use the healing wand with another foreign wand in the same hand? In a fleeting thought, Harvest Moon thinks not, but there is nothing to be done about that now. She steps into the corner, and then grabs up the spear of the Small-eyes before it can retrieve it.
With the light from her Ioun torch lighting up both passageways, Harvest Moon now surveys the foes that she will have to protect against.

DM Opinion: my guess is no. Here's why. Put yourself at the end of your hallway at home and try to reach diagonally. Not easy. Try to reach straight ahead. Not much of a problem. The corner provides +4 hard cover vertically. Presumably you could have reached across a 2ft or 3ft barrier (kobold tables) with less difficulty than the corner of a wall.
Other reason could be because, although the squares touch, they do so only on one corner. Whereas and adjacent square not diagonal shares a whole side.
These would be my opinion without having looked at the rules board.
Just looked at the Rules Board. Seems the concensus is you can, like an Attack. So it's ok by me.

When did you 'Capture' the wand? Your last action was to disarm the kobold. Disarming knocks the weapon out of the opponent's hand. It does not mean you grab it. You next break the webs. Then go and grab the spear. Then you take a 5' and survey the area. Then you move all the way back to the dinning room.
Because of my split posts, you must have gotten confused. Here's what I have for you this coming round: Burst Web as Standard Action / Transfer captured wand to hand with Wand of CLW / 5t step / Pickup Kobold's Spear as Move Action,
However, you don't have a 'Captured' wand. You'll have to put the healing wand away, pick up the kobold's wand, pick up the spear. If you choose, you may hold two wands in one hand and deal with stowing one away next round.
Make any sense?
Harvest Moon (HP19/18; CMD 18 / AC-See Combat Info at End of Post) - Al Monday June 25th, 2012 10:13:42 PM
OoC: "If you successfully disarm your opponent without using a weapon, you may automatically pick up the item dropped." This is similar to the 3.5 portion of the rule that reads: "If you attempt the disarm while unarmed, you end up with the weapon in your hand."
So, in essence, Harvest Moon disarms with a bare hand, and therefore winds up with the disarmed item in her hand. No?
Besides, now that the kobold has run away, there's really no need to pick up the spear.
DM: it would be the last sentence. So we have: Burst Web as Standard Action / Transfer captured wand to hand with Wand of CLW as Free Action/ Ignore 5t step and don't pick up spear/ 1 Move (40'?)

Wait. No. If that's the way it's going to go then Harvest can only take a 30ft move. Hasn't gotten extra Monk speed yet. So, that's a 30ft move to E13. Will still offer the Wand to Gerox. But he'll have to come get it.

CO-DM JonathanT - Kobold Mess Hall (literally) Tuesday June 26th, 2012 11:13:09 PM
DM Note: I don't have Bralin or Barratore yet. Here's what I have so far.
Movin' right along: DM OOC: I screwed up the map. I had posted that the three kobolds had shifted down one but somehow didn't get them moved on the map. My fault. So they didn't move after all.
Kobold Hall: The Kobold spellcaster escapes Harvest's clutches by the hair on its chinny-chin-chin. Harvest hears something that sounds like a door closing and decides not to follow. With the spellcaster's wand in hand, she decides Brom's suggestion to regroup is worth listening to and heads back to the dining room, calling out to Gerox to come and get a 'prize'.
Peza reloads the crossbow and is surprised at Harvest 'brushing' off the webbing, finally, and heading in the opposite direction. DM OOC: Reloading the crossbow and picking up the kobold are two Move actions. However there was no real need to shoot the dead guard last round anyway, I can use the DM Mighty Hand of Time Reversal and just say you didn't shoot last round and thus don't need to reload. Peza manages to sling the 45lb kobold (more like 70lb dead-weight), over her shoulder and head after Harvest, who stops short of the dangling axe.
Crag, with a loud grumble, also shakes off the spider webs much like a dog shaking off water.
DM OOC: waiting for Bralin.
Kobold Dining room: Gerox hears Harvest calling and starts back, meeting her at the axe. She hands him the wand and tells him what it is. Of course, the Command Word is still uknown.
Lemick easily avoids stepping on the cowarding kobold and steps up to the kobold bodyguard that just gave Barratore something to think twice about. Ths time he knows which one of him is real and his swing catches the guard enough to sting.
Brom gangs up on K2g and puts a long gash down its chest, felling it.
