Hair of the Minotaur

A letter arrives -- Jim C
Monday July 30th, 2012 1:34:55 PM

Three weeks pass as Bosk crafts items both for himself and for some others in the group. Restlin also does some crafting and both feel pride in the fact that they've done such works as they peruse their items and approve of the meticulous nature of the magic items they've kept and those they gave to their friends that provided the materials.

It is about this time that a letter arrives. It is from Inspector Aulander and it asks the group to investigate the disappearance of two children from Labortown. Supposedly they've been missing for a couple of days and may have stowed away on a boat and gone after the bounty of a large Goldfish at a nearby atoll, but that is uncertain. The inspector would like your group to head down there, find out where they went and retrieve them. Along with the note he has given you a Writ for free passage on any ship in case you need to head out to the atoll and a potion of Underwater Breathing for each member of your group. The children's names are Toby and Rachel, and he has included their address at the bottom of the letter.

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 16/14/14 CMD: 15 HP:50/50 (Spells)  d4+1=4 ;

Restlin enjoys his time off. Three weeks later, he has entirely forgotten how terrifying adventuring can be and is ready to get back into the thick of things, however.

"Another mystery then, eh? This one sounds a lot less gruesome. Think we could get in some lying around time on a nice island beach while we're at it? We could play in the waves, build a replica of our tower in sand, and just relax."

The wizard quickly becomes enamored with the idea of a Hook City paid vacation and starts packing his bags...that's when it hits him.

He takes his bag and dumps the contents on his bed. He grabs his spellbook and sword cane (arcane bonded item), closes his eyes, and grabs 4 more items: a scroll of haste, a shaving kit, boots of levitation, and his cloak of resistance. The rest he leaves tucked away in their proper place in his room.

Restlin the Wizard is goin' on a luck quest.

***

Four items picked at random by swishing my mouse over my character sheet w/ my eyes closed and seeing what it stopped on when I opened them. If that's not random enough, feel free to tell me what is, Mr. Jim.

Since Restlin is not yet a mendicant, he gets nothing for doing a luck quest and this may get him killed. Still, it's a prerequisite and he'll need to brave it anyway. If Mr. Jim feels like roleplaying this out further, I won't discourage it.

Jim: I think now would be perfect timing.

After a couple weeks of working out with Wyaar, they both should have a solid respect for each other as well as having given Wyaar an idea of just how powerful the Minotaur come Dragon Disciple is and yet can further become...
He still spends a few hours each day climbing and balancing in and on the tower to the slight discomfort of some of the neighbors, who truly hope that their children get no ideas of trying it themselves.
He's also going to practice parcor (free running fyi) in the general area of the Iron Heroes tower, after which he should have a very good working knowledge of that area of mud town. (that right?)

Jim: What is this Iron Heroes tower you speak of? and it's Parkour--which I despise. Bang, you fall on your head :)

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:23/16/16 HP: 62/62 CMD = 23
Monday July 30th, 2012 9:16:55 PM

Beriothian returns from the Woldian League of Adventurers after another good session of climbing and tumbling only to see Zane scaling the side of their tower.
If that guy falls he's going to create a tunnel straight through to another continent.
Beri calls up to his large friend.
"You know, Zane, the WLA has some great climbing facilities. They even have nets at the bottom so that if you fall you don't become three tons of hamburger meat. Though I suppose your way gives you more motivation not to fall."
Beriothian watches as the giant minotaur appears to defy the laws of physics balancing on the tower walls. After a few minutes he gives into the fact that gravity itself must be to afraid of Zane to attack him, and the elf makes his way inside to find the others reading a letter.

Wyaar spends part of the three weeks settling in to the tower in the space formerly occupied by Kyan. He'll also enlist Restlin's expert skills in airing out the room that for some reason smells like unwashed cat.

When the letter arrives, Wyaar suits up and gets ready to go, "To their home then? Perhaps find some hair or the like to try and and seek help from the Powers in finding them? Or at the very least get a description of them."

First things first -- Zeoll is especially grateful for the Restoration spells that bring back his full powers.

Over the three weeks at home, Zeoll spends most of his time crafting. He is upgrading his Headband of Alluring Charisma from the weakest variety to the strongest -- with the 16,000 gp worth of magic ingredients he just bought. And with his seer's intuition, he senses that he needs to hurry. It will take him 16 days to do the work, at speed. He just hopes he does not make a mistake! Especially since Zeoll cannot cast the required Eagle's Splendor spell.

The normal crafting DC for a CL8 item is a 13. With the speed and the lack of spell, Zeoll needs to roll a 23. His spellcraft check is +10. He hopes he will be lucky!

The roll ... is a 20! Three short! But Zeoll is a bard, and he knows how to use his inspirational power to get the job done! In the instant he feels the skill check go south, he casts his Gallant Inspiration, giving himself a retroactive +2d4, or 3, which makes his check a 23 -- EXACTLY what he needs to complete his masterpiece!

"Wowsy woo hoo!" he shouts as he capers for joy, placing his upgraded headband firmly on his head. "I feel like a cub! Hooray!"

The last few days of R&R seem anticlimactic. Zeoll tends to his rooftop garden, and to his garden next to the Iron Adventurer shop in Mudtown. He sings songs and dances. He seeks out priests and magic users, interested in their arts. He tries out his other new magic gear. And when the call comes from the Inspector, Zeoll is eager to be off on adventure again!

He agrees with his friends that the best thing to do is to visit the family and find out more. But before disturbing the family, Zeoll asks around the local neighborhood. There may be some other details that the parents do not know. Diplomacy to Gather Info -- Zeoll gets a 30 to find out what there is to know.

When it is time to interview the parents, Zeoll takes the lead as gently and delicately as he can. His Dip check with the folks is a 36, and his Sense Motive check is a 15.

Bosk is relieved to be back in Hook City where the weather is climate controlled and he is able to dedicate his time fully to crafting and training and shows Wyaar around the tower and directs him to an empty room he can use. Thanks to his ring of sustenance the taur finds himself awake with his daily prayers and mediation complete before the others get up, so he gets his crafting in while the others rest and then prepares the group a hearty breakfast of biscuits and sausage gravy. The cleric also tends to the group members who were weakened by the sword and casts a second round of restoration spells on them, bringing them to full strength.

One morning, on his way to the WLA, Bosk sees Zane running around the tower. After a brief conversation the cleric informs him that the Tower is in Hook City and that they own a small shop in Mud Town, a poor town where traders wait outside the city walls until their number comes up and they are allowed to enter and sell their goods.

When the Iron Adventurer's learn of new assignment he lets Zeoll gather his information and agrees the group should visit the children's family first.

Zane, now slightly more secure in the geography of the where the tower is is more than happy to practice at the WLA, but when it falls in the crapper, it won't be in a training hall, it'll be in the real world. He'll continue his practice on and about the Tower as well.
The "Letter" arrives and it takes Zane under five minutes to grab his gear, settle it about him and be ready to go.
He'll let the Bard do his thing when talking to the family, but he will listen closely.

Deciding to take on the mission, the group assembles and heads down to Labortown. Zeoll first starts inquiring about the town about Toby and Rachel and comes to the conclusion that very few minotaurs like Toby, referring to him always as "That damn Toby". It seems Toby and Rachel got into the habit of knicking hair from minotaurs in the area--one minotaur in question got knicked five times and shows Zeoll the minute bald patches on his hide thanks to "That damn Toby". Looks like the pair were gathering minotaur hair to craft a lure that would catch the goldfish with the 10000gp bounty on it.

"Hey! I bet that damn Toby was the one who took some hair from you," Restlin says as he punches Zane in the arm.

"Why would children think knicking minotaur fur would make a for a good fishing lure? Is that a thing? I'm not much of a fisherman, too smelly."

Restlin will ask around regarding why minotaur hair would be used as a lure (Gather info = 20). Is this a local urban legend, or is someone messing with these kids?

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:23/16/16 HP: 62/62 CMD = 23  d20+13=30 ;

Well, I suppose our next course of action should be to canvas the docks and see if anybody saw the two kids stow away on a ship. In a place as organized as Hook City there is probably some central location where ships report their destinations, we can probably narrow down the vessels the kids would have snuck aboard to get to that atoll. And I'm sure someone at the docks would know why there is such a high bounty on the fish the kids are after. Hopefully it's just a very tasty, but there is always a chance 'gold fish' is a euphemism for some kind of deadly yellow shark.

Restlin soon finds out that there is no exact science behind why minotaur hair would be sought after for such a lure, but a minotaurs spleen--thats another matter! Prices as high as 100gp for a minotaurs spleen can be had, but it's supposedly "illegal".

Beri's questions lead him almost into a fist fight as the sailors around these parts don't like nosy people--especially nosy people with a lot of questions and no gold to get them with. But the agile man does learn that four ships that sailed for that atoll never returned and some say they have spotted the wreckage of several ships there, but no survivors.

The cleric asks for one of Zane's hairs to cast a locate the locate object spell. He then chants some ancient woldian words and the the hair bursts into flames. The locate object spell tells me that the closest taur hairs are located on my back and my detect victim spell tells me that you while irritated by the plucked hairs, you are hardly "yearning for vengeance" against the children." Sorry, my spells aren't going to help much at this time.

Those with a knowledge of cleric and Avenger specific spells may realize that the cleric didn't actually cast the above spells, but rather cast a simple spark cantrip on the hair to ignite it since Bosk knew the spells wouldn't reveal any useful information.

After hearing Restlin's comments on selling Minotaur spleen Bosk does a little math. A ring of regeneration in 90,000 gp. At 100gp per spleen I would need to sell 900 spleens to make up the cost of the ring before paying taxes and business registration fees... definitely not worth the time or hassle to start up my own spleen growing / selling business.

The group comes upon the shop nestled back along the main street/ Any detect magic spells cast before entering the shop (casting inside would kinda be rude) show that absolutely nothing is magical in the shop--neither is there any sort of field hampering magical detection since magic is apparent on those in the group. This place looks more like a junk shop and old man Wilson looks neither rich or coherent enough to have placed a bounty of such size on the goldfish in question.

"Welcome, welcome, you're here about the meatloaf, aren't you? It's mighty good, please, sit down and have some." The old man motions to some moth-eaten chairs stacked haphazardly about the shop and brings over a tray of lace doilies. "It's a wonderful day, isn't it? A great day for fishin'"

Guys, you are about to run head first into a trap. For all we know this old man really did offer a bounty, and two kids were the only ones foolish enough to not take it as the ramblings of an old sailor. Furthormore, if we find him we can't actually prove that the man was lying. And even if you were swindled the end result will be that we enrage a bunch of sailors when we confront him about it, resulting in a fight that will likely cost us more than the 50gp you lost.

Beri turns to the shop keeper
Excuse me sir, but do you remember if two children were in here recently?

Old man Wilson looks at Zeoll like he's coming out of a daze, "Oh, you're such a big kitty aren't you." Reaching over to his left, the old man pulls out of a box a large ball of yarn. "Here ya go kitty, play with this." There seems to be something unusual about the ball of yarn, a certain smell to it, like catnip but on an epic level.

Zeoll, please make a Will save DC35 or become Fascinated by the ball of yarn.

In his morning meditations, Zeoll felt a strange pull to stare at the round orb of the sun too long -- a pull he resisted. Now he understands why his contemplative state inspired him to resist the lure of spherical compelling objects.

[OOC: Using Natural Divination for a +9 on that save. And +2 heroism. To base +16 gives a total +27 ... still no sure thing. ... a 43. SAVES!]

Zeoll takes the ball of yarn and sniffs at it. He grins. "Verry interresting, good sirr. But not as interresting to us as the inforrmation we need to rrescue two lost childrren. Please, let me ask you again, tell us what you can about this goldfish, these innocent kids, and how we can rrestorre them to theirr families."

Zeoll uses his new Fey Gift ability to cast his Suggestion as a Still Silent spell-like ability. The italicized text is the suggestion. The will save DC is 23 (base 11, +9 chr, +2 feats, +1 racial ability).

[OOC: He has attacked one of us and forced a will save on another ... so Zeoll feels fair is fair to give him back a will save of his own to make. Especially since this is an odd but fun kind of nonlethal fight, isn't it?!]

Most of the group, less Restlin, head out to look for a ship that will take them out to Drake Atoll. One after the other says they'll take them until they're shown the Writ of Passage given to them by Inspector Aulander, "Bloody Guard never pays or only a portion. No thanks!" However, there is a fishing boat said to be heading out that way, laying traps as they go. Captain Geru states he'll be leaving within the hour, but time passes and Restlin is no where to be seen. Hours pass and the Captain says that if he leaves now he won't be staying over night at the Atoll. Near the end of the day, the ships captain calls out to the group to assemble upstairs--the destination has been reached. The Atoll looms in the distance and the ship slows it's approach. When it reaches about 1000ft from the open cliff face, a couple of dinghys are lowered.
