Amid hearty congratulations and enthusiastic work, repairs to the main mast are completed within an hour. The Lionfish sets sail, continuing its original path. The rocky island, with its colorful elves, quickly fades in the distance. You enjoy a filling meal of fish stew and fruit harvested on the island. It is a welcome change from the salted pork and hardtack. You sleep well, bodies aching from the rigorous shore expedition.

You awake in the morning to find that most of the rest of the crew has already abandoned their bunks. Rising blearily, you report to the main deck to find that no one has missed you. Tula smiles as she sees you, "Cap'n Renchild told me you was free from duties. Reward for bein' so successful with yer "security." We're expecting to reach the trade point by eventide, so relax."

[Feel free to RP if you like in flextime.]

The Lionfish virtually flies across the water, spurred by a lucky tailwind that eats up leagues of ocean. As the sun begins to dip toward the horizon, Captain Renchild appears from his cabin and orders sails dropped. Piebald bellows out orders to the rigging crew, who scramble to gather the yards of canvas and tie them to the crossmasts. The ship slows in the water as the Captain takes gauge with his compass, charting your position on a map. He nods, satisfied, and bellows to the crow's nest. "Ahoy, crow's nest! Do ye spy a ship north by northwest!?"

The sailor manning the crow's nest raises his spyglass and scans the horizon, looking for the telltale blot of a ship's hull. He stops his scan, adjusts the lens, and suddenly startles, almost dropping the expensive telescope. He raises it again quickly and peers again, then shouts down in a panicked voice. "I spies a ship, Cap'n! By her markings it's the Red Foam! One of the Bloodkin!"

Your fellow sailors suddenly halt their activity, staring at each other in mute silence. With widened eyes and open mouths, they suddenly begin a dozen different conversations, creating a panicked susurrus. "Bloodkin? Here? Do they spot us? Can we outrun them!? We need to turn around! What are we going to do?"

[You gain a +2 to your Knowledge (local) roll if you are a former crewman of the Lionfish.]

Coer wastes no time relaxing and settles into a day of vigorous training. He feels more than a little embarrassed about his poor show with the Octopus. By evening he feels re-invigorated, satisfied he has learnt a valuable lesson.

"Bloodkin?" spits Coer at the announcement from the crow's nest. "Surely we are not here to meet with these... monsters?"

Yel'kno spends much of the day laying about, staying at the ring stuck on his finger.

At the mention of the Bloodkin, the former sailor exchanges a glance with Coer as he seems to recognize the name as well, "It has best not be." But just the same, he quickly checks his equipment to be sure he's ready.

Jozhur spends some time relaxing, stretching his sore and bruised muscles.

When the approaching ship is spotted he looks to Coer and Yel'kno, "Afraid it seems that way, what a strange trip this is. This makes me even more curious about that cargo."

Spire, sitting in his room with his books, doesn't hear the initial cry about the Bloodkin. However, after a sufficient number of people run pas this door yelling, he sticks his head out, a bit frustrated. Making his way up to the deck, he questions a few crewmen on the way. The word Bloodkin is enough to set his head racing. Spire grabs his bow and spellbook, leafing through it as he walks onto the deck. "A strange trip indeed, Jozhur," he mutters, leering at Tula. He puts his spellbook away, drawing his bow and an arrow. "We had best not be here to meet with those monsters. I have a feeling things might go awry if we are."

Speaking with Tula, Dilantar hears the calls regarding Bloodkin and tries to recall all he know of them. Tula, surely we aren't meeting the Bloodkin? They have a bad reputation even among my people, but I am sure you would not consort with them. I will prepare for battle, please excuse me. with a small bow, Dilantar walks to his bunk and grabs his bombs, and loads his crossbow with his last poisoned bolt. I really need to get a steady supply of ingredients. Maybe Tula can introduce me to some suppliers.

Captain Renchild booms out above the panicked din to silence the crew. "Easy! EASY! You yellow-bellied bilge rats! Ye think I would be sitting here twiddling my thumbs if this weren't supposed to happen?" He motions to Piebald, who comes over and listens as the Captain whispers a few words in his ear. He nods, then starts at a lope towards the cargo hold and disappears below deck.

Captain Renchild continues addressing the crew. "Yes, they are Bloodkin. No, they aren't going to attack. The Red Foam is the contracted buyer, and they like our employer too much to spoil a good thing. They will send an envoy to inspect the merchandise, and then send a rowboat to transfer it to their ship. Easy as tippin' a whore."

You suddenly hear Piebald shout from below decks. "Move it, 'fore I lay into ya!" This is quickly followed by the sound of many barefoot steps crossing the cargo hold and mounting the steps to the deck. The crew collectively suck in their breaths as perhaps a dozen elves, clad in filthy rags and looking pale and sickly, come up onto the deck. They blink painfully against the light of the sun and moan in pain. They all wear a length of chain connect to iron collars around their throats. You can see a mix of men and women, with even a few children huddled in the middle of the group.

Piebald pokes those in the rear of the group with the handle of Father, eliciting more cries of pain. He calls out, "This be all of them, Captain."

Yel'kno mouth turns into a deep frown as Piebald leads the elven captives up onto the deck and prods them mericlessly. His hand grips hard on the hilt of his sword and he strides to the mast and climbs a few feet into the rigging to address the crew, "Sailors of the Lionfish, I am Yel'kno, you know me and my companions from sailing among you and protecting you these last few days. And you know what the Bloodkin are."

He gestures a hand at the Captain, "The Captain says that they will not attack, but he does not know that. They are just as likely to take the ship, pick the best among us for slaves, and sink the rest below the waves when they're through. Dead men cannot spread any tales of treachery."

"If the Captain wishes to wait for the Bloodkin to arrive, I say let us put in him and any that would stand with him off in the rowboat and let them do so. I say the rest of us that value our lives and freedom should make full speed from here before they catch us and make for port. The only difference between you, me and these more souls here" he says with a gesture towards the collared elves, "is a collar around your neck and I'm sure the Bloodkin have plenty on their ship."

Spire freezes as the elves walk out on deck. His eyes begin to water as he trembles, gritting his teeth. "What... what is..." He turns to the captain, the most rage filled any of you have ever seen him. "How dare you!! You lie to my face then cart my people out in front of me in chains!" He lets out an incomprehensible scream, throwing a bit of acid at the deck. He straightens up, taking the bow from his arrow and pointing it at the Captain. "You are a worthless fool. You honestly think these creatures will just take them?" He gestures at the elves, tears now freely flowing down his face. "Any crew member wishing to see the dawn of tomorrow had best start turning this ship around." He lowers his eyes back to the elves, his arms drooping to his sides. He finally glares at Piebald, almost daring him to poke the elves once more.

In response to Yel'kno's rousing speech, the crew looks equal parts wary and confused. They seem hesitant to go along as usual.

Captain Renchild scowls, pulling himself up to his full height and casting a dour look at his 'security crew.' "Watch your tongues! These elves are indentured servants. They have voluntarily sold themselves into service according to the terms of their contract. Contracts which, I might add, are recognized as legal and valid throughout the coastlands of the Yuva Sea. No laws are broken. As opposed to, say, fomenting mutiny..."

He looks as though he has a bitter taste in his mouth and he spits on the deck. "The Bloodkin will not attack because I know they won't. This isn't the first time they have had transactions with our employer. The contracts of these indentured servants have been sold to the captain of the Red Foam. He is here to take custody of them, as is his right as owner of their contract. Any attempt to stop the transfer will be de facto theft of goods."

Tula calls out from behind you. "That be all fair and good, Cap'n, but we all know the Bloodkin won't honor the terms, even if the sale is legal. They'll be worked to the bone, then tortured, killed, or eaten. Or all three."

Renchild waves a hand. "What illegalities these orcs may commit is not our concern. I am bound by law to honor our commission, as well as ensure that the Bloodkin receive their legal property. I would prefer not to have my ship confiscated in lieu of delivering as promised."

Tula seems genuinely confused. "How can ye say that, Cap'n?"

Renchild laughs a short, barking laugh. "Do you blame the blacksmith if a jackboot stabs you in an alley? I am practicing legal trade. What they do after we part ways is not up to us." He looks over toward the northwest and scans the horizon, putting a hand across his brow to block the sun. "Now, where is that blasted envoy?"

Jozhur addresses Captain Renchild, making sure he is loud enough for everyone on the deck to hear,
"I don't think you can compare blades to slaves captain. And slaves is what they are, no one sells themselves into servitude completely willingly. Forget what the law says, you know this isn't right. Besides, I'd be more worried about losing your life at the hands of those Bloodkin if you go through with this than the possibility of losing your ship if you don't. Look around, almost all of your crew seems to think this is a bad idea."

As if on cue, there is a splash near the Red Foam as a small figure is tossed overboard. A black creature the size of a riding dog follows after him and soon the pair are joined, master and mount. With an unusual swimming style, the pair cross the distance between the Red Foam and the Lionfish much like a rider hanging on for his life on the back of a porpoise. With the occasional breach from the water, the pair reach the Lionfish in short order with one final leap that lands them on the side of the ship clawing their way up onto the deck.

From the back of the black creature (which resembles a wingless adolescent griffon), a spry halfling dismounts and shakes himself off, joined at the same time by his mount, spraying all those nearby. "Woooooo Weeeeeeee! I never get tired of that, no sir!" Standing there is a halfling holding a very long spear and dressed in travelling attire with a chainmail shirt on. "Greeting and... uh..." Noticing the drawn weapons and the half-dead elves chained up, Rafe changed tactics, "Well, I see things have turned, interesting, yes?" Looking once more at the elves, "I take it this is the cargo I was meant to inspect?" Shaking his head, "Ach, this won't do."

Raising up his empty hand, "Lets just take it easy, I can see the situation is a little dicey here--and I know you've got your questions, but uh, let's just stay calm and talk this through." Clearing his throat, "I'm Rafe Thornhill of the Greendale Thornhills. As envoy of the Bloodkin ship, Red Foam, I've been sent here to inspect this cargo, but you've probably figured that out. I've been a member of the Red Foam for about three days, could be longer, I've been beaten up a few times and ended up unmolested because of Larien here," patting his mini griffon mount.

"Anywho, between the beatings and so forth, I guess I was chosen to be sent over here because they didn't want to lose a dinghy or some such and thought that if you killed me, well, that would give them all the more reason to come over here and kill, rape and eat you all. I can't say I wasn't sad to hear I had been chosen cause I've been trying to get off that ship ever since I got shanghaied onto it. So, here I am." Looking at the elves and pointing to them again, "But this won't do. I'll be no party to the torture, murder and consumption of these fine elves here--especially at the hands of those damn orc bastards over there."

Speaking in fluent elvish, Rafe addresses the enslaved elves, "Fear not elven friends, as life still fills this body, I'll not let them take you." Turning to the rest, "So, what's the plan?" A big grin shone on Rafe's face as yet again he was faced with the prospect of becoming a hero.

His face becoming black with anger, Dilantar listens quietly to the entire conversation. The plan, is to keep these poor cousins from becoming even worse off than you apparently were, as they do not have the protection of yon beastie. The fact that you would even consider this farce of a transaction, Captain, speaks greatly of your character. I for one will not be party to this and will fight to the last breath to prevent such an act to occur. Dilantar readies his crossbow to fire a sleeping dart at the captain if the Captain is aggressive. You are right that fomenting Mutiny is against the law, however you seem to be skirting the thinnest line imaginable by taking part in this... travesty. Please tell me this is an elaborate set up to sink a Bloodkin ship. Also, who is your employer who would deem this trade as legal? Dilantar cannot seem to keep his emotions or words in check.

Renchild barks a mocking laugh. "Are you maggots daft? I will spell it out for you. I am not breaking any law. You, on the other hand, have already broken several laws, ranging from disobedience of a direct order while away from port to fomenting mutiny. I am within my rights to keelhaul you for that offense, or clap you in irons and sail your sorry hides back to any port you care for a year or two of hard labor." He takes a step forward, and twists Yel'kno's words back to his face. "I think your choice is to spend the rest of the voyage in the brig, or be hung for mutiny. Because if you best me, I am still the registered owner of the Lionfish in every port from here to Plateau City. Without the signed paperwork, you cannot set foot in any decent port ever again." He smiles a cruel smile. "That, and there is still the matter of my crew." He turns a circle, raising his voice. "Wages are paid when we return to Bonetown! And I doubt our employer will be keen to pay mutineers!" He looks back to the party. "So which is it? Will you obey? Or die?"

He flicks a quick look to Gaston. The sergeant nods and draws his sword. At his cue, perhaps a dozen of the other sailors draw an assortment of knives, daggers, and belaying pins. Everyone stands very, very still.

I agree with the halfling Dilantar chimes in. I believe we should try to attack the orcs and sink their ship, or if possible, take over the ship and see if we can free any of the slaves that are probably on that vessel. Turning to the captain, Dilantar addresses him, Captain, while I have enoyed my time on your vessel, and as you said, you are within your legal rights to all of those threats against us, we will not be allowing this"transaction" to take place. However if you do wish to deal with us in any fashion, much less one that is as final as battle, or as binding as the legal proceedings that will come of this, we should probably have that happen after we deal with the Bloodkin, one way or another. You can step aside and let us go our way, and we will put out the story that the Bloodkin were trying to break the contract and take the "indentured servants" for free, thereby allowing us to respond with lethal force. Or some other story that is satisfactory, and we all leave each other alone, or it goes to the point of battle, where both of our sides are weakend, and the Bloodkin actually do decide that taking the slaves is easier than paying and they might even get a few more in the bargain. Turning to the group, Dilantar speaks again, I am sorry if you do not agree with any I have just said, I will not take offense if anyone does not wish to be on my side, but I will not allow this to happen, on the pride of my House.

Should any ally be within splash range(I don't think any are, but just to be safe) Dilantar excludes them from his blast radius, up to a maximum of 5 people. OOC1: The sailors with gray outlines are not bad guys. The sailors with scary red outlines are the bad guys! I have adjusted your actions accordingly, but please be aware for next round.

OOC2: I neglected to explain it previously, so this applies starting now - There is a five-foot drop from the Quarter Deck to the Main Deck. You will need to take the stairs, or jump the railing. This will necessitate a DC 5 Acrobatics check to avoid taking 1d6 nonlethal damage and falling prone. This does not apply to Large-size creatures.

OOC3: You are allowed to use up to one hero point per round. Spire, please note that you did not use two that round. Don't worry, your second roll was good enough anyway.

ROUND 1 SUMMARY

Spire sends a spray of roaring water toward Renchild. It knocks him back a few steps, as well as the crewman behind him. [Please be sure to roll additional CMB checks for additional creatures in the path of your bullrush.]
Yel'kno takes a guarded stance, but discovers that the sailors who have remained on their side of the ship appear to have been swayed by their words. They stand unsure, waiting to see if the 'security forces' can prevail over Captain Renchild.
Rafe (13 damage) shouts a battle-cry and charges forward on his eidolon. They draw a number of attacks from enemy crew, with one jarring smack striking the halfling. His aim is true, however, and his spear catches Captain Renchild in the arm. His eidolon is successful as well, landing two blows with his bite and claw.
Coerator (14 damage) becomes a deadly blur of motion. His sword nearly fells a sailor, while his horns gash another across the chin. His kick does the most damage, caving in a crewman's ribcage with a wet sucking noise as he drops to the deck motionless.
Dilantar lobs a bomb and squarely hits the first mate, cascading alchemist fire over all three and burning them badly.
Jozhur has some difficulty with his feint and is off-balance for his attack, missing widely.
=================
Captain Renchild (19 damage) bellows above the din of the brawl, "Aim for the brute! He's an easy target!" This draws the crew's attention to Coerator in a less than healthy sort of way. After taking a spear in the side from Rafe, he draws a wicked dagger and hurls it toward the halfling. (Att 28. Dam 4. Crit confirmation 25. Dam 4.) Rafe immediately feels the sting of poison on the blade, but miraculously continues to fight (Natural 20 on Fortitude save).
Piebald (9 damage) worms his way through the hail of belaying pins to stand near the captain.
Gaston makes his way to the rear of the brawl, directing crewmen in their attack.
Crewman 1 (11 damage) throws a belaying pin at Coerator and hits. (Att 18, Dam 6).
Crewman 2 (16 damage, dead) throws a belaying pin at Coerator and hits. (Att 16, Dam 3).

At the captains command Coer is assaulted with a hail of wooden pins. He deflects one with his free hand (deflect arrows feat) however still takes a few hits. Not wanting to go down without a decent fight for the second time in as many days he moves forward (5ft south) and unleashes again at the three crew within range.

Coer's sword streaks out toward Crewman 1 (Hit=14; Dam=9 if successful) immediately followed by a vicious overhead strike with his left hand to Crewman 3 (Hit=17; Dam=9) and finishing the attack with a swipe of his horns at Crewman 4 (Hit=15; Dam=8 if successful).

OOC: I'm unsure on which attack is defected using deflect arrows feat as all the attacks occur at once. Can you advise how you want this worked out Tanner?

DM: It would be logical that the first attack would be deflected, but without initiative it becomes somewhat vague. Let's say that the first attack to hit you on the list of enemies is the one you deflect, so subtracting 6 damage from your total would be appropriate.

Yel'kno swings across the main deck on a rope, his sword outstretched before him. He jabs viciously at the crewman standing on the stairs and elicits a howl of pain.

Rafe (16 dam) and Larien attack Piebald, giving no quarter. Together, they put the sailor down, and then some.

Yel'kno steps forward and readies an attack on the Captain, contingent on his making a hostile move.

Jozhur (12 dam) swings and misses in attacking one of the three hostile crew still standing.

Coer (7 dam) also lashes out against a crewman, and manages to put him down two. Now only two crew are left to defend Renchild.

Dilantar throws another carefully placed bomb. Renchild saves and evades all damage. Crewman 10 saves and takes 3. Crewman 11 fails and drops. Only Crewman 10 and Renchild are left standing.

Spire fires at Renchild and hits him for 3 damage.

==========

Captain Renchild (14 damage) holds up his hands in mock terror at Yel'kno's threats. He whistles, and steps back into the Lionfish's dinghy. He delays until Crewman 10 (10 damage) can also step back to the boat and lets it down fast. It lands in the water with a huge splash. Renchild whips out a wand of gust of wind, points it at the Lionfish, and activates it! The Gust pushes the Lionfish 60 feet, and the small boat with Renchild drifts 10 feet back.

At the end of this round, Renchild and Crewman 10 are in the dinghy, 70 feet from the Lionfish.

On board, Tula gives a hearty, "Three cheers! Hooray!" and the crew joins her in shouting. The elves are more subdued in their chains, but you can see the sudden life that has appeared in their formerly hopeless eyes.

But you see the Bloodkin ship still in sight, maybe 10 minutes fast sail out.

Agreed, While the former Captain will probably survive to be a pain in our collective backsides, we don't have enough power to finish him off and fight off the Bloodkin. Yel'kno should be able to help you out with the healing. Anyone else in need of a quick patch up? While I don't have the magical healing wand that Yel'kno does, I am somewhat proficient in the minor healing ways. Tula would you mind coming up here for a quick discussion. Assuming Tula comes to speak with him, Dilantar will address her and the group. Ok, we can all agree that we need to be gone before the Bloodkin get here, unless someone was holding back some serious firepower. Tula, I need your help for what to do with the bodies of the fallen. Yes they fought against us, but I still think we should dispose of them as befitting a sailor who fought to the end for his captain. Rafe is bleeding and sees the orc ship, from whom he only very recently escaped, and it wisely inspires him to suggest giving vengeance a pass in favor of a speedy exit.

Nonetheless, Jozhur knocks an arrow -- but that gust of wind, with its one round duration, precludes any immediate shooting. The moment it stops, however, Jozhur lets loose and slightly wounds the retreating Renchild.

Dilantar not only agrees with Rafe, but takes decisive action to move events along briskly while there is still time to influence their course. He asks Yel'kno to tend to the wounded. He calls Tula over and listens to her advice.

Yel'kno, however, is also too set on revenge. He ignores the request for healing in order to put another arrow into Renchild.

Coer searches Piebald -- and that's all he has time for with this post. Coer finds some vials, a sap, a crossbow, and some gear.

Spire fires and misses.

In response to Dilantar, Tula runs up. In answer to the points put to her, she says, "Of course one of you has to be the captain! Who will it be?"

She does not stand on tradition regarding burial, and says the crew won;t much either. "Toss the dead overboard," she says, "and the rest of Renchild's lackeys too, alive or dead, unless you have more mercy in your souls than most Bonetown captains."

She suggests that you search the captain's quarters, but likely he had the keys himself. More to the point, she suggests the new captain give the order to hoist the sails and get out off the shoals before the Bloodkin arrive. "I bet they won't be jumping for joy at the way things've turned out!"

Yel'kno lowers his bow with a frown and gives the shrinking image of Captain Renchild and his dingy an obsence gesture before putting his bow back over his shoulder. It wasn't so much vengence that motivated him as wanting to see a job done. Leaving him alive will only lead to trouble for them and possibily the rescued elves in the future... but then again, to have a future they'll need to deal with the fast approaching Bloodkin ship.

He reaches down to retrieve and sheath his sword as well as getting the dropped wand and moving to see to healing Rafe.

Unless someone else request healing right off he moves over to the rest of the group, giving Coer a shrug. "I think it's only you and I that have experience as sailors... if no one else wants to try, I'll take the mantle. I admit I often dreamed of being a Captain when I was just a sailor, but I didn't think a situation like this would be what could make it happen..." and then he glances down at the ring on his finger, "then again I didn't think I'd have to wrestle an octopus to get engaged."

Understanding full well the need for a quick consensus, the party discusses the idea of the captaincy.

Coer says he has the technical skills but does not seem to want the job. He suggests Yel'kno.

Yel'kno is willing to take on the responsibility. "I often dreamed of being a Captain when I was just a sailor," he reveals.

As Yel'kno heals him, Rafe casts an intuitive vote for him.

Dilantar suggests that if Yel'kno is captain, Coer should be first mate.

Spire flat out does not care. He is worried more about the captive elves.

Jozhur too votes for Yel'kno, and asks for curing as well. He looks for keys on Piebald and finds two -- later, one turns out to open the brig, and the other opens the small cubby that holds the ship's rum and fouler grog. Next stop, the captain's quarters.

Yel'kno consults with Coer and decides on the best chart to get away from here fast. Yel'kno gives the orders, and the ship gets under speed. But will it be fast enough to evade the Bloodkin?

Tula listens eagerly, and then turns to Captain Yel'kno. "But Captain, what do we do with these?" She motions to the bodies on the deck. "We would go faster without the added weight."

Belowdecks, Spire sees that the elves are chained and manacled -- and that some of the manacles seem to be especially good quality. The elves are subdued and follow his directions.

The first order of business is to get away from the Bloodkin ship. Dilantar sorts the dead from the unconscious and helps to get the bodies of the dead pitched overboard.

First Mate Coer orders the sails to be raised, and the lightly cargoed Lionfish speeds away over the waves, quickly outpacing the lumbering ship behind.

Captain Yel'kno's first thought is to set sail for Rum, and indeed that may be an excellent option. But the discoveries from the Captain's Quarters may give him more information ...

Jozhur picks the lock on the Captain's quarters, and he finds an array of papers. It seems Renchild was telling the truth. You discover documents identifying Renchild as a licensed agent of the Shipping Guild. Renchild was sent money to purchase the indentured elf servants in Bonetown and transfer them to the orc pirates -- the notorious Bloodkin. There are hints that there may be similar regular sales of indentured elves to orcs in various locations in the Middle Seas. In exchange, Shipping Guild merchants and colony ships are granted immunity from predation by Bloodkin ships, as well as peace in the coastal waters with Izen -- through which trade with Plateau City passes. By breaking the deal, it seems that the peace may now be in jeopardy!

There are also navigational charts and tables. Dilantar and any others, if you can make a Survival DC20 or a Profession Sailor DC18 or a Profession Navigator DC16 check, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {This is a link to a map of your current position. Please copy and past the URL:

The green circle is your current approximate position. The red route is The Drowned Man's Path, a dangerous route that Captain Renchild followed. The blue route is the usual way ships go.

You also gain access to this table of sailing distances around the Middle Seas:

http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/The_Middle_Seas
}

Picking Rum as a destination seems like a sound choice -- but how will you go? The straight path, back the way you came, is very dangerous, as you discovered. The roundabout route is safer and slower.

You have the Captain's papers proving that he is the owner of the Lionfish. Such papers are a joke in Bonetown, of course, but in more civilized places, like Minotaur Isle and Aisildur, having the wrong papers could mean the ship would be impounded, and the party arrested as thieves, maybe.

Meanwhile, Spire is seeking to free the prisoners. He makes the following discoveries: 1) 9 elves are manacled with locked leggings and chains, and after the keys are found, they are all freed. 2) Two elves are locked in manacles that have no keyholes. 3) The cargo hold that had held the elves also holds two more prisoners -- a skinny young half-orc and a dwarf. Both are unconscious and both are also bound with these manacles that have no keyholes.

Rafe stays alert. He finds that the carpenter's boy, a young goblin named Horace, seems attracted to Rafe's eidolon friend, and wants to pet it or feed it a bit of dried fish.

Trying to decipher the map maker's handwriting has stumped Dilantar. He thinks it looks familiar, but the personal quirks in the writing make it too difficult for Dilantar to read at the moment. Maybe later he will be able to help with the map but at the moment Dilantar is pretty much clueless as to where they are. ((Sextant gives a +4 circumstance bonus on survival checks above ground [probably prof(sailor) checks too, but I can't remember at the moment :P] )) Looking over the papers that were found in Renchild's former quarters, Dilantar's face grows darker with anger at what is implied in the contents. Addressing Captain Yel'kno and First Mate Coer, Dilantar speaks his mind, Excuse me Captain and First Mate, but these papers imply some very troubling things. Might I suggest we somehow get the ownership of the Lionfish switched over to the new Captain as soon as possible, wether legitimately or with a good forgery. Then I would personally like to investigate the Shipping Guild to see how corrupt it really is. I believe Spire would also like this course of action, based on his previous remarks and actions regarding indentured elves, but that is up to him. Having said his piece, Dilantar will await further orders or discussions. With that said, I am willing to add my not so inadequate intellect to determing a satisfactory course for these actions. Should you wish for my advise, I will gladly give it and am awaiting further orders.

Now we have a few possible destinations, depending on remaining supplies and Captain's decision. The closest port, as far as I can tell, is Centaur Isle, which is a little more than 500 miles away. Liontaur Isle follows that by being about 800 miles away. Bonetown and Rum are a little over and under 1,000 miles away, respectively. Centaur Isle, which probably won't be very hospitable to those who, for all practical purposes, stole a ship, is probably out for anything longer than a very fast resupply, so I would not recommend stopping there. We should do any forging/remodelling we need to do before setting sail for Rum, as they seem a bit more respectable than our home port of Bonetown. Rum would be a good choice if our remodelling work are passable enough to fool the Rum Harobor master, which would give us legitamacy with every other civilized port there is. However, it may be easier to get new papers at Bonetown, where the law is very much on the lax side. Listening to the new Captain's statement, Dilantar also adds, While that is true, us being a group and all, you and Coer have the most sailing experience. Any knowledge I may have of mathmatics and navigation is all theory, with no real world application before now. I have had a couple of fairly close encounters where theory did not match what happened in the real world before. As a result of those experiences, I would defer to your judgement on the ship. Also, if we, who are your equals in the group, while in battle on dry land or other areas, follow your oreders on the ship, it will help confirm your authority in the minds of the crewmen. Additionally, I suggest we get Tula to report on the current state of all supplies and crewmen's health, a current report would help in making decisions. Startled at himself for having spoken for some time, Dilantar keeps quiet while the discussion continues.

Jozhur makes his way down to the hold where the prisoners were kept. Upon seeing the shackled elves he shakes his head, "How can anyone be treated this way..we took over this ship, you're all free to do as you please, but the crew is shorthanded and could probably use some help topside."

Quickly examines the manacles with no keyholes to see if there is a way to crack them. Puzzled, he turns to Spire, "Are these things magical or something? Also, did you find the keys to these poor elves' chains? We may need to get some muscle down here."

Given time, he then begins working to free any elves that are still bound.

Dilantar and Coer figure out the charts, and reveal some key facts about the ship's location.

Yel'kno meanwhile learns about the ship's "legal" location. Sure, in Bonetown no one asks for your papers. But in other ports ...

If you make a Know Local check vs DC15, Highlight to display spoiler: {In Centaur Isle and Liontaur Isle you can likely get by with the right bribes in the right places. Dirt City too. Most other places, the lack of correct paperwork may be a problem. In Rum? You don't know. It is too new.}

Rafe makes nice with the the goblin, and sees that the ship has escaped the danger of the Bloodkin ... for now.

Jozhur releases all but two of the elves. Those two, and the dwarf and the skinny half-orc, are all wearing what turn out to be magical cuffs.

Spire takes an educated look and determines that these are four Manacles of Cooperation, which keep prisoners docile. He also learns the command words, and quickly speaks them, releasing the four.

The dwarf and half-orc are unconscious, and badly used. The elves are little better.

Tula asks if you want the defeated sailors who sided with Renchild to be placed in the brig. She also asks if you want to still fly the skull and crossbones. When she asks you about the flag, that rings a bell.

Once that and another else that needs seeing to is in order, he'll head below to see to the captives himself.

When he comes upon the non-elven captives, he shakes his head, "I'm guessing that you didn't willingly sign up to be fed to some sea-faring gnolls?" And then he extends his hand, "I'm Yel'kno... Captain Yel'kno now, I suppose.." He has the wand ready, but isn't sure if it's needed without any phsyical injury, but he'll look to Dilantar and Spire for an answer to that.

The first order of business is food. Horace leads Rafe and Larien to the galley, but the cook yells, "No beasties in the galley!" Horace brings out some hard tack and salt beef.

Meanwhile, Spire and Coer determine that several captives have been poisoned, but not with anything fatal. Dilantar does what he can, and the dwarf is now the only one still unconscious. Jozhur fetches the new captain.

Yel'kno arranges for food for the captives, and Tula brings some broth in a pot. "Nothing too strong," she says, "or it'll just come back up." Captain Yel'kno offers some to the half-orc, Kerg. It does smell good.

Soon everyone has a full tummy. The ship is on course. A couple days of rest will see everyone doing much better.

Yel'kno once again has thoughts that he may be the worst Captain ever.

With the rest of the group he'll inquire as to what they want they flag to be, since they can change it after all, and try to get a handle on how they want to handle the legality of the ship. Do they want to go the fully legal route and sue for possessionand attempt to prove that their mutiny was lawful.. Do they want to have forged documents made that show them as the rightful owners...or do they want to redo the ship and make it unrecognizable as the Lionfish and pickup some papers to back it up. Yel'kno prefers options 3, but is open to any other options as well.

He will also inquire Rafe as to where he got the name Larien from for his companion.. Strange name..

Anyways, he's part of this organization called the Shadow Guardians and one of the members is a drow lady by the name of Larien. She's not much to look at, face like a frying pan, but Gio seems to like her. In the past she used to have a griffon by the name of Griff--yeah, I know, not too clever with the names, eh? Over the course of the next few days, the heroes have an opportunity to explore every nook and cranny onboard the Lionfish. Some of the more interesting discoveries (including some things previously discovered) are as follows:

Piebald's personal gear: some vials, a sap, a well-made hand crossbow with 10 bolts, well-made leather armor, and a well-made dagger. His sea chest contains an alchemy kit, adisguise kit, and a set of lockpicks.

The captain's quarters a small cask of Purple Wine from the Taur Isles. It is likely quite valuable to the right buyer, either as a drinking wine or as a component in arcane potions -- at least 500 gp. The captain also had hidden some jewelry, made of silver and violet gems, maybe amethyst. In total it is worth likely 1,000 gp or so. He also had some small and large coin, worth in total another 200 gp.

You have already found four pairs of magical manacles, of course.

The Lionfish herself is a 75 ft long and 20 ft wide caravel. The ship is worth likely 5,000 to 10,000 gp in the right market.

==========

You also get to know the ship's crew:

Cato the Carpenter, an expert woodworker, ironmonger, and shipwright. A skilled, though crass and sharp-tongued old human.

Horace, his helper, a goblin youth.

Gaston Grieves, a half-elf fighter, a likeable enough fellow with a quick tongue. A sailor and the master at arms.

Tula, the bosun, who you know well.

Tommy Teeth, a half-orc sailor out of Dirt City, said to be on the run from the House of Sharks.

Pinny Liz, a human sailor with a monkey's skill in the rigging.

John Squint, a quiet gnome sailer with a pet rat -- also serves as the cook.

In the brig are another three sailers who sided with Renchild -- Sammy Straight, Joansie, and Too-Elt.

==========

It takes a minimum of three crew to sail the Lionfish during an eight-hour ship. If you want to keep the ship under sail around the clock, you need a crew of nine. You have five crew not counting Cato and Horace, who are no use on deck. If you want to sail at the fastest daily rate, you'll need to add four crew -- from PCs, those in the brig, or both. To serve as one of the main crew of nine, you need at least one rank in a related profession and a skill check of DC10 to 20, depending on seas and weather. In normal weather you can take 10 on the check.

Coer and Dilantar are clearly competent to sail the ship, and they demonstrate their proficiency.

Kerg lays low, still figuring out friend and foe.

Rafe banters with his friends and the crew -- and is willing to swab the odd deck, too. [OOC: Any ranks in a relevant profession skill?]

Spire tends the elves and other former captives. He even speaks orcish to Kerg.

Jozhur and Captain Yel'kno spar with Gaston, gaining an appreciation for his skill. No one else on the crew comes close.

The heroes get to know the ship and its crew as they sail for Centaur Island. [OOC: that is your destination?]

Minor housekeeping aside, Dilantar will perform navigator duties aboard the ship, attempting to keep them on course and try and make it to their destination as quickly as posible. ((Survival 27 for navigation, or Prof(Sailor) 8, whichever is needed))

Perhaps I could have a look at the papers and... create a convincing duplicate naming us the owners of this ship."

--------------------

Linguistics can be used to forge documents, and Spire has a +10. We might not even have to dock before we get the new documents.

The few times that Kerg is visited it is by the grim-faced pointy ear from before. Kerg then realizes that every one of them that he's seen so far has been downcast. This one is just dressed better.

He speaks to Kerg in the same way that the men who caught him did. Luckily he was able to learn quickly from them, or he would not be able to hold a conversation. His education in the languages was bolstered by the snap of some kind of rough vine. They were preparing him for where he was being sent to, wherever that was.

Kerg told Spire, who had shared his name, the story behind his capture. It was some time ago, lost to Kerg thanks to most of his time being spent out of the sun (not to mention his time unconscious). Kerg touched briefly on his life alone on a small group of islands. It was the only place he knew existed before the day this ship appeared on the horizon. When it arrived at his islands he stayed out of the way and watched the newcomers from afar. He watched them hunt his game, he watched them cut down and burn his trees, he watched them spoil his water. Soon it was too much and he decided to do something about it. He should have known better. He was easily outnumbered, but still managed to hurt a couple and disrupt what they were doing. After that they said they were going to sell him off to repay for what he had done.

After he's done resting and regaining his strength, Kerg will venture out onto the deck. He notices that everyone is moving about busily and decides to keep out of their way. Looking up he sees that the long up-and-down wooden things are fairly unused, so he climbs the woven vines beside them and sees how high he can go. (Climb check 26)

Jozhur notices the young Orc climbing up the ship's rigging and becomes quite curious. He takes off after Kerg, if he is able to get near him he'll have a chat with him in Kerg's native tongue.

The slightly built human tells Kerg of his life in South Harbor, living in the streets, always on the run from the law and enemies he had made. He explains that he boarded a ship destined for Rum that sank near Bonetown, where he was rescued by a witch named Goodie Bess. Soon he found himself on this ship as part of a security crew carrying some sort of secret cargo. When it was discovered that the cargo was actually slaves about to be transferred to a Bloodkin ship, the security crew ousted the former Captain and much of the ships crew in the process. The only members of the crew supporting the sale of the captives are currently locked up in the brig.

Jozhur had also mentioned to the Captain that he is capable of forging documents, but Spire would be a slightly better choice it seems. Jozhur would be more than willing to lend a hand in creating the documents if materials are available though.

Dilantar takes a look at the vials, and discovers that they are poison: bloodroot poison (2 doses), oil of taggit (2 doses), and striped toadstool poison (2 doses).

Yel'kno talks tot he three in the brig. Joansie (a human with a scar on his cheek) and Too-Elt (a human with a sullen, vacant look) have little to say for themselves. They defer to Sammy Straight, a good-looking guy with sun-bleached blonde hair. "Look, Captain," he says, "We swore the pirate oath to the old captain, and we'll say the words to you too. How's that?"

Spire suggests forging some new papers. Jozhur offers to aid him.

Kerg is feeling more himself, and takes to the rigging like he was born to it. Jozhur reaches out to the wiry half-orc in friendship.

Rafe and Coer also lend their sailor skills to the running of the ship. As for crewing the craft goes, with those two, plus Dilantar and Yelkno, you have 10 sailers on board -- just one more than you need to keep the ship under full sail.

Yel'kno, please divide the ten crew you have at hand (or nine if you yourself choose not to take a turn) into three watches -- mostly because I want to know who is asleep at any given time of day. Note that you do not need to utilize the three in the brig ... they are assumed to remain there otherwise. Also note, as Tula may mention, putting non-humans with low-light or darkvision on duty during the hours of darkness is well advised.

Kerg listens to Jozhur, but has to often interrupt him to ask questions. What is a rum? What is bonetown? What is a witch? Already he's learning so much about a wider world. He thinks he'd give anything just to get back to his islands though.

Kerg shares the same story he told Spire with Jozhur. He never knew it felt nice to have company like he does now. Once he's done, he starts pointing at just about anything he can see to ask what it is called or what it does.

Approaching Jozhur when he gets a chance, Dilantar begins, As you may be another who is not above the use of posion, the vials we found in Piebald's gear were a few different types of poison. Should you wish for it, you can have 1 of each as there are 3 pairs of posion. If not however, that is fine too. Also, keep in mind, that with the appropriate materials, and sufficient time, I can also make a few different types of posion myself. I will also be letting the group know about the poison whichever way you decide. Going up to Captain Yel'kno, Dilantar states With my darkvision, I would probably be better put to use during the dead of night, whenever it is darkest. Just a suggestion. See you next time I have duties. Dilantar will rest until his assigned duties are about to begin, then does his work without complaint. "Sounds fair enough" Yel'kno says to the sailors offering the oath. They stuck to their word to near death the first time. With luck they'd do it again. Just the same, he'll keep an eye on them, but otherwise let them have the run of the ship unless they do something to deserve further suspicion.

To Spire and Jozhur, "That sounds like an excellent idea. I'm sure between the two of you and the official papers we have you'll be able to come up with something convincing."

Between spending time with elves and teaching things to Kerg, Spire seems to be the happiest he has been seen originally arriving on the Lionfish. Even his seasickness has subsided.

Assuming there is papaer and something to write with onboard, he sits down with Johzur at some point with the ownership documents of the ship, and attempts to create a duplicate. He takes his time (take 10 or even 20 if possible) to properly recreate the the documents, but declaring Yel'Kno the captain and owner of the Lionfish.

The three sailors who sided with Renchild say they'll be good. "We won't give you any trouble, Captain," says Sammy Straight to Yel'kno. They are happy to he out of the brig. Yel'kno, if you make a Sense Motive check vs DC15, then Highlight to display spoiler: {you note that they actually have not made any oath.}

Yel'kno sets the watches. Your DM assumes you are setting a Night watch from 8 pm to 4 am, a Morning watch from 4 am to noon, and an Afternoon watch from noon to 8 pm. Correct as desired. In general, your DM assumes that crew for a given watch sleep during the watch just prior. If you are on Night watch, you sleep in the afternoon, for example.

Taking 10 on sailor checks, the ship makes good speed.

Rafe works hard at the life of a sailor.

Young Kerg has much to learn, and evidently a lot to make up for. Tula, the bosun, takes him under her wing, and is always happy to answer his questions.

Coer watches over the dwarf. He moves between unconscious and semi-conscious. [OOC: I have not heard from our other new player. I hope he'll come on to post daily.]

Spire spends some time putting his expertise to use on forging new documents for the ship.

Dilantar and Jozhur share the stash of poisons.

After some days of travel, on the Afternoon watch, a sail is sighted. Tommy Teeth, Dilantar, and Coer are asleep below deck. Gaston, Too-Elt, and Yel'kno are on duty.

During combat, if you want to maneuver the ship, any crew on duty must make Prof(Sailer) rolls vs DC12. For fancy maneuvers or unusual situations, higher DCs will apply. In addition, other characters can Aid Another to boost those checks. A Captain can relieve a sailor on duty and assign someone else, although some see that as an insult.

The other ship is about 3-4 miles away, and likely you'll meet (if the captains of the ships so desire) in about 30 minutes. Right now it is too far away for more detail.

What flag are you flying today?

He'll have the ship keep a generally straight course, but just deviate enough so that the ships will only come as close as a quarter of a smile with each other when they pass... assuming the other ship doesn't attempt to intercept.

With a few of his companions to accompany him he'll gather the three sailors he freed from the brig, "My friends... you said you would swear an oath, yet you have not. I need to be sure that if that ship over there isn't just a friendly passerby that we can depend on you not to turn on us. Swear to it or I'll have no choice but to put you back in the brig."
