Centaurs at Land and Sea

Co-DM Cayzle

Before the other ship is sighted, Yel'kno insists that the three pirates in the brig give their oath. They smirk and agree. The oath they asy is a traditional one:

"On by honor, with the gods to witness, I swear my loyalty to Captain Yel'kno and swear to lift no hand against him, least I sink to the bottom of the sea."

The three rejoin the crew.

==========

The other ship is sighted far off, and the missing heroes are roused from their rest. Coer and Spire peer out as the ship gets closer. It is a large ship, easily twice the size of the Lionfish, and it flies a green flag featuring a tall tree.

Know Local DC15: Highlight to display spoiler: {Both signs -- plus your current location -- suggest the ship is a centaur vessel.}

Dilantar preps an extract, while Rafe winches back his crossbow; then he sets it down carefully and applies poion to his darts.

Kerg too has a hunch that this could be a fight.

Jozhur makes a friendly gesture to Kerg, offering him a weapon and trying to speak in orcish.

The big ship comes closer. It is twice as high as the Lionfish, and as it gets closer, it is harder to see what is happening on his high decks. It is about two-three minutes and a quarter mile away. It is changing course to get closer. You see that the rigging is very simple on the vessel.

[OOC: Really sorry for poor posting last week. I'm aiming to do better this week.]

Captain, If my memory serves me well, that ship is from the Centaur Isles. calls Coer, recognising the distinctive green flag.

Its changing its heading to intercept as well. Shall we risk running? Or are our papers 'in order'? he says with a smirk.

Coer checks his weapons but leaves them sheathed, not wanting to provoke a fight if it can be avoided.

OOC: Sten, welcome! Please do post a description of yourself -- in fact, all players please describe your characters and how they appear.

Tula, breaking away from staring at the oncoming ship, tells Kerg that centaurs are horses from the waist down and humans from the waist up. From the top of the rigging, Kerg sees that she is right. There are about eight centaurs on the deck of the ship. He also spots a shark swimming in the water nearby.

Rafe, Spire, Jozhur, and Dilantar decide to let others do the talking.

Yel'kno shouts out a friendly response. Coer repeats in the common language of liontaurs, centaurs, and minotaurs.

The ship is now about 100 ft away.

The centaur calls out, "Blarg! Do not speak to me, false taur! If you want to keep that cow-head on your shoulders, you'll keep that cow tongue quiet in your mouth!"

"Now, if you want to stay friends, you'll pay the toll for travel in Centaur waters. 10 gold per head, 100 gold each for heroes. Looks like you got heroes on board!"

"A toll?" (Knowledge: Local 18 for anything about a toll... further response would depend on what he finds out here)

And he glances towards the others with a questioning look. He also makes a stand down motion to Coer in an attempt to calm any response the minotaur might have.

Yel'kno is a tall, bean pole of a half-elf standing at nearly six and a half feet tall, but very skinny with little fat on his body. His skin is jet black and with his slightly pointed ears he looks almost like what one would expect from a drow, but standing next to Dilantar one can see the contrast in skin color. He is dressed simply in a suit of pale leather with loose white pants, bare feet and a rapier at one hip, a couple of daggers stored about him and a bow over his shoulder.

Spire grits his teeth, clutching his bow tighter. He tries to remember hearing anything about a toll (Kn: Local 14) and walks over to Yel'Kno. "I don't know anything about a toll, but I know that just about anyone can ask for it. We had best tread lightly."

Spire stands just over six feet tall, his skin a pale tone common in most elves. His eyes are a shocking green, and a pale scar traces down from his left cheekbone to his throat. He is always seen with his bow either strapped to his back, or clutched in his left hand, as it is now. On the back of his left hand is seen a spitting cobra, the tattoo continuing to coil up his arm and end around his elbow. His expression, ever grim, turns back to the ship. "They're asking for nearly eight hundred gold. That seems a bit... hefty."

Kerg watches the reatures on the approaching boat with wide eyes. He wasn't sure what a horse was when Tula mentioned it, but looking now it's apparent that they are powerful creatures. He can only follow half of what is being said between the two crews. The one named Coer is speaking in a language with them that he doesn't understand. What he understands from those speaking common isn't much more than that.

One of his earliest lessons in language was to count decently, so he takes a count of who he can see on the other ship. 8. He wonders how he could share that without shouting to the whole world. He decides to keep it to himself for now.

Kerg is a young half-orc with short black hair and a lean build. He is lucky enough to favor his human blood more than his orc blood in most ways, but his teeth, nails and skin are obviously orcish. He was found in only a loincloth in the brig, and it is all he has agreed to wear since he was freed. Because of this there are a few scars visible on his body.

Blowing a low whistle under his breathe, Dilantar is slightly shocked at the unabashed racism from the centaurs not sure if I would have the guts to call Coer a cow, much less in front of the crew. Standing almost half a foot shorter than Yel'kno, the contrast is striking. His skin, such a dark hue of blue as to seem black, also emphasizes his silver eyes and short, spiky silver hair. His clothing does not help the image of "dark elf" as his clothes are very subdued and in shades of blue, dark gray, and black. He then approaches the same conclusion as the others with one exception, So, even if we were willing to pay such an extravagant fee, do we even have 800 plus gold on board? I don't remember noticing that kind of liquid assets anywhere I have been on the ship. Just letting you know Captain, based on how they responded to Coer, I am willing to back up a ...less than diplomatic response, but we may be outgunned. How do we even know if they officially represent the Centaur Isle anyways? Has anyone heard of Centaur pirates before? Dilantar awaits either further discussion or an order from the captain.

Re Spire's Knowledge check: 23 to determine the strength of the centaur speaking.

Your DM does not think that the skill would reveal levels or classes. However, a clever player might look at the the hints given -- wooden armor, water walk spell, lance, a couple magic items -- and come to his or her own conclusions.

The knowledge check does bring to mind the following centaur facts:

Mounted (Ex): All Centaurs are always treated as mounted, and they can use equipment and combat actions as if mounted. Further, all centaurs are considered to have the Mounted Combat feat for the purpose of meeting feat prerequisites. This ability does not, however, grant the abilities of the Mounted Combat feat.

Centaurs use the same rules as all D&D creatures for natural attacks and attacks with manufactured weapons. As a standard attack, centaurs can make one hoof attack or one weapon attack. As a full round attack, centaurs can make usual weapon attacks and two secondary hoof attacks at -5 to hit. Centaurs can take the Multiattack feat to reduce this secondary attack penalty from -5 to -2. Centaurs can also take a unique Centaur Charge feat:

Centaur Charge [Racial]
Benefit: You may charge an opponent even if you do not have a straight line to the opponent. You still must have at least 10 feet of straight line distance to end the charge. Difficult terrain still hinders a charge. A Fighter may take this Feat as a Fighter Bonus Feat.

Turning to Sten, Dilantar responds While I am not a healer by vocation, I do have some practical experience gleaned from our little groups encounters so far. I can brew up some potions though if you wish for some. I just ask for the cost of the base materials. Listening to the jeer from the centaur, Dilantar thinks to himself, Oh this will not end well. As the Centaur jumps down and walks on the water, Dilantar realizes there is more than meets the eye to this creature. Seems like he may be stronger than he looks. Based on his equipment, he seems like a druid. I don't think he will be a pushover, but it is up to you if you wish to fight. Dilantar looks through his formula book to see if anything might help in the fight. I can't help alchemically with your fight, if that is indeed what you choose to do. So if you decide to fight, I can only wish you good luck. finishes Dilantar with a smile.

The Lionfish sails away from the centaur ship, to hoots and catcalls from the Taur crew. The captain shouts, "COWARD!" and then walks back to his ship and climbs a rope up to his deck.

Staying on course, it is easy to see that there is land ahead. Seabirds are more common, and from the crow's nest, Kerg thinks he can spot land.

Please make a Perception check, and if you hit a DC20, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You even see a smudge of smoke on the horizon in the direction of the land.}

With no real drive to force a confrontation with the centaurs, the party consensus is to seek a different save harbor. It takes a couple days to circle the island. You see other small villages on the shore -- even smaller than the one you have left behind.

Have you gone east or south along the coast? Your kindly DM chooses a direction for you, and declares that you have gone south.

What flag are you flying as you come into port? Is there any indication of a piratical bent?

You come to Fort Stag, on the southwestern corner of the island. It is a busy port, but you are able to sail into the harbor unchallenged and dock at one of the many wharves. You see huge trees behind the docks, so big that buildings shelter under their branches. And these are Taur buildings, so they are already big.

As the crew is tying up, a young centaur trots down the dock to the boat and asks to speak with the captain.

"Your name and ship, please? Merchant or Free-Sail? And your papers?"

Kerg stays close to Dilantar, who stays quiet and observes.

The party splits up to explore a new town. Some go to the Catacombs, many for the first time. [OOC: feel free to post on that board to place and complete your order in character. That may take a few days or even a week, so not to slow down the game, we'll assume retroactively that you complete your transactions and we can move forward.]

[If you want to shop for anything locally, post here or e-mail me.]

Sten and Coer -- and maybe Jozhur? -- make a bit of an odd grouping, but dwarf and minotaur are willing to brave the depths of the centaur town to make some needed purchases. Tula, the NPC bosun, tells Coer that the ship is low, very low, on general supplies. The duo find that most buildings are a single level, with very wide doors, grouped under huge trees. Many centaurs scowl at Coer. Some spit or mutter an epithet. A few reach fro their weapons. But if Coer offers no word or move that could be taken as a challenge, he escapes with nothing more than an exceptional number of pasture patties to avoid stepping on from the centaurs walking in front of them.

Rafe visits the local WLA branch, a building with a rare second floor -- as it turns out, there are rooms there for visiting two-leggers. He learns that the slave trade is a bit of a misnomer. The trade is in indentures, that is, in contracts for work for a period of years. Usually, an indentured person sells himself to pay a debt or help their family. Usually the indentured servant works for the same person to whom he sells his service. But there is an understated trade in servants, and to some eyes there is little to distinguish this from slavery. And for some poor souls sold into the wrong hands, there is no difference. The more sordid of the houses of Dirt City, the orcs of Izen, and, rumor has it, some of the noble families in Aisildur engage in this trade. The priests of Ga'al, Rafe is told, buy indentures and offer freedom from servitude in exchange for accepting a heartseed and conversion to the God of Domination.

Captain Yel'kno offers the elves a chance to debark here, with a bit of coin for their trouble. They ask if he will remit their indentures. They say they were bound for Rum, they thought, to serve their indentures there for five years. Pirates captured them and their contracts -- unlawfully of course, so their sale to the orcs was illegal, they say. The elves are inclined to go Rum, so that they will not be outlaws.

Spire invites them to join the crew. But they say they can't be crew for the same reason -- that is, because then they would be outlaws -- unless the Captain buys their contracts. They ask if the Captain is headed to Rum?

We need some details on the Lionfish, so here goes:

The Lionfish is a sailing ship. Here is a drawing and here is a map.

The ship is 75 ft long and 20 ft wide. Here is the description from the Core Rules:

Sailing Ship: This large, seaworthy ship is 75 to 90 feet long and 20 feet wide, and has a crew of 20. It can carry 150 tons of cargo. It has square sails on its two masts and can make sea voyages. It moves about 2 miles per hour.

However! The Lionfish is a fast vessel! She sails at 4 mph, and carries only 50 tons of cargo with a crew of 20, max. Note that Taurs count as four crew, space-wise. You need a crew of 12 (three per watch) plus captain and first mate to run her all three watches of the day. If you do, you can make 96 miles per day, or 32 miles per watch.

You need a gallon of water per day per person (4 gallons for a taur) -- that's 10 lbs. A ton is 2,000 lbs, so 20 people need 200 lbs of water a day. A ton of cargo in water is 10 days of travel for the crew.
Figure food weighs two pounds per person per day. For a crew of 20, that's 40 lbs per day, or 400 lbs per 10 days. Round up for barrels and such, for 2,500 lbs (1.25 tons) of food and water for the entire crew for 10 days.

The Lionfish carries 50 tons of cargo. If you loaded way up with supplies and no trade goods, you could sail out for 50/1.25 = 400 days without reprovisioning.

The problem comes from your current cargo -- 12 elves. They need living space and provisions. Captain Renchild made it work by treating them inhumanely, crushed into a cargo hold and underfed and underwater. If you treat the elves as people, the combination of sleeping space and extra provisions needed get complex.

The "brig," that is, the hold that can be used for people as well as cargo, would take up 20 tons of cargo if filled. Three or four people can sleep there at a time, in about 100 cubic feet of space each. 12 elves (and Kerg and Sten) were packed in there. In shifts, three or four elves can sleep there at a time. That leaves 30 tons of cargo space.

Assuming, per the numbers above, 1.25 tons serves 20 people for 10 days, or 200 people-days, then the remaining 30 tons of space is about the same as 24x200, or 4800 people-days. For the current crew of 10 NPCs, 7 normal PCs, a taur (counts as four), and 12 elves, that's 33 people-equivalents, or 145 days you can travel without reprovisioning. Call it 150 for convenience.

Per the Core Rules, tail rations are 5 sp per pound, or 1 gp per two pounds, and you need two pounds per day, so a day's rations for a single person is 1 gp per day. That makes the math easy! 150 gp plus all the fresh water you can draw from the town's wells will get you, your crew, and the elves 150 day's travel (15,000 miles) in any direction, with no room for trade goods, and no need for reprovisioning.

==========

For the record, here is the current crew again.

Cato the Carpenter, an expert woodworker, ironmonger, and shipwright. A skilled, though crass and sharp-tongued old human.

Horace, his helper, a goblin youth.

Pinny Liz, a human sailor with a monkey's skill in the rigging.

John Squint, a quiet gnome sailer with a pet rat -- also serves as the cook.

Yel'kno says to the elves, "However, until then, if any of you have any skills that might be of use to us on the voyage and would like to help, please let me or the First Mate know and we'll put them to good use."

Yel'kno will also look to perhaps get a couple weeks less worth of provisions and buy a trade goods as well (thinking net zero merchant endeavor)

Tula reminds you that there are two routes to Rum. The safer, longer route is via Wemic Isle. The shorter, much more dangerous route, is a straight shot from Centaur Isle, that is, the way you came. The shorter route trims about 350 miles off the distance.

Which way will you go?

Also, the ship sustained a lot of damage on the way -- the broken mainmast was only the worst of it. You could easily sink a few hundred gold into the Lionfish to make her really shipshape.

[OOC: I suppose we should create a hit point system for the ship to account for damage, and maybe decrease sailing speed depending on damage. You players may well want to have a conversation in e-mail to finish up the shopping details and account for party expenses. Listening to Kerg's comment, Dilantar responds Let's make sure there aren't any laws against hunting this close to the city and barring anything of the sort I would like to join you if possible. I agree, we haven't had meat in a while. Alright, im off to the Catacombs to exchange our loot. When im back i'll give you each your share. I agree that a portion of the money should be put towards ship repairs and upkeep and crew wages, maybe say 1000gp. And some cargo would also be good to minimise our costs back to Rum.

If anyone is not busy perhaps you could scare up some cargo or contracts for shipping?

Tula, what is the current debt to the crew?

Rafe takes notes on commerce. This is an active port. Wemics and humans are the main merchants from afar. But he soon realizes he is out of his depth. Watching merchants haggle, he thinks he'd be lucky to get half the prices they command, at least without training of some kind.

Helping Dilantar's query, Rafe asks about hunting at the WLA, and discovers that would-be hunters would likely have to get the permission of the local Stallion, that is, Chieftain, and that hunters would also likely have to hire a local ranger or druid as a tour guide to make sure the right prey was targeted. "Why not just shop at the butcher shop?" asks the helpful WLA leftenant that Rafe meets.

Jozhur asks some locals, and finds out basically the same thing. "Just stay away from the Whistal trees," he is advised. "The druids are protective of them."

Kerg will need this carefully explained to him -- Jozhur, Rafe, and Dilantar do their best.

Spire finds an elf or two in town -- they are rare but not absent. If you approach a stranger, what do you hope to accomplish? Spire also finds a book shop. Looking for anything special? Most of the works are large books, written in Taur, many focused on herbology.

Captain Yel'kno oversees the provisioning and the repairs to the ship.

First Mate Coer visits the Catacombs, where minotaurs are people too. And he asks Tula about the crew's pay. As a very rough estimate, assume a gold piece per day (ask me if you want the math on that). Eight crew earn that much. Tula and Gaston earn five per day. It has been about 30 days since the crew were last paid. So 18x30=540 for the crew for the last voyage.

How much are you spending on provisions? How much on repairs? How much on pay?

Do you take the time for a hunting expedition?

Any other shopping or activities? Did anyone join the WLA? Please remind your DM who the members are, and did you take the chance to train?

Coer returns from the Catacombs with a hefty bag of gold to distribute. He swings via the Harbour masters office and pays the remainder of the relevant sales tax (14145.3gp sold so I have removed 141.45gp)

After meeting with Tula and being told that the crew is owed $540 he is of the view that an equal share of the loot is required to pay them to date, for their continuing employment and to restock and repair the Lionfish.

He finds each of the team and asks their opinion, as the gold is theirs as well, and provides them with their requested share.

========
Ooc: ok maths time
After the loot has been sold in the catacombs and "sales tax" paid to the city we have a total of 14289gp 5cp.

Split eight ways it is 1786gp 1sp 3cp each, but there is no money left for crew, supplies, cargo etc
Split nine ways it is 1587gp 6sp 7cp each, with a healthy amount in the ships safe to pay for its upkeep.

Please take either an 8* share or a 9* share in character so we know how much we have to spend on the ship.
Or take a different amount altogether depending on your PC's personality.

Captain, may I reccomend 50gp worth of supplies? that will fill one third of the hold and keep the crew and our elven friends sailing for about 50 days or 5000miles. If i remember the charts correctly, rum is less than 2000miles, but given our luck at sea recently, it is best to be prepared.

Coer returns from the Wold-famous Catacombs with a heavy bag of gold, which he parcels out to friends, as well as to the harbormaster, to the crew. and to Tula for ship repairs and 50 days of provisions.

Cato tells Coer that 400 gold will reinforce the mast properly, scrape the barnacles off the hull, reseal the seams, purge the bilge, and rerope the rigging. Coer, if you make a sense motive check vs DC12 then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You have a hunch that he is overbilling you, but the excess is likely because he wants to do more than is necessary to the ship. He seems to really want it to stand out in every way.}

Kerg gives up his dream of a hunt, at least until he is in a wilder area.

Spire finds a book on the uses of living plants in creating magic items, such that the plants remain alive and must be tended or the item will die. Two examples of such items are given, both wreaths. One, for a druid, grows goodberries. Another, a pair of wreaths, allows telepathy between a humanoid and an animal if both are worn. With this book, you would gain a +2 competence bonus on spellcraft checks to make these items. The book, called "Ivy Arcana" costs 10 gold pieces after a little dickering. The clerk says that such texts are prized when written in Centaur or Druidic, but this one, in Common, has a reputation for being a poor translation from the original, so it is a bargain.

Sten finds himself challenged and then welcomed when he reveals his devotion to Mother Wold. A centaur druid -- a guardian of the trees -- shows him around. "To really appreciate the Whistal, you should spend a few days rooted next to one. They are akin to the sequoia, a small species found in other forests of the Wold. The greatest Whistals are 1,000 feet around, and a mile high. The greengages talk with them and shape them into living homes for the most honored among us. Most centaurs live in their eaves."

Sten does in fact feel that he is seeing one of the natural wonders of the Wold.

Yel'kno and Jozhur declare their intent to visit the Catacombs.
