Of Life and Death

Of life and Death - DM RobC
Friday August 24th, 2012 12:51:48 AM

The group unanimously decide that it is worth the risk to try and revive their fallen friend.

Sam is keen to start as soon as possible. Devlin wonders if they might have to queue behind all the duergar that were sent to their end. today. Shinto considers his future path and whether he should stay with this group.

Bruagh whispers something to Tahni and takes his place by Dernock's side. It is obvious that the dwarven woman is blushing but she says nothing.

Tally and Tahni commence chanting. Words seemingly infused with a power unfamiliar to all of you. The chanting grows louder, and a soft white glow starts from each of the clerics' hands that seems to get brighter and brighter and extends from Dernock's body. Just as the chanting reaches its peak volume and you feel the need to squint from the bright light - it all stops in an instant. Both the chanting as well as any ambient noise has stopped. The world is silent.

You notice that Tally and Tahni appear to still be chanting, however you cannot hear their words. You notice that your hands now pass through Dernock's body. In fact, your hands pass through everything you seem to touch. Tally and Tahni seem oblivious to you.

By the feet of Dernock's corpse stands an unfamiliar sight. It would seem to be a standard doorframe, however it isn't affixed to any wall. It stands alone in the courtyard. You could in fact walk around it if you so chose. There is no door in the frame just some sort of moving grey surface - much like a dirty puddle. As you watch the surface stops moving and "sets", for lack of a better word. It really does appear to be a doorway - but to another realm, not to another room. The other side looks to be that of a tavern. And standing at the bar, right where you'd expect him to be, is Dernock drinking an ale.

Everybody except for DernockHighlight to display spoiler: {The tavern is empty except for Dernock, and what appears to be an imp standing next to him. Dernock appears quite relaxed and you can hear the two of them talk, though you can't make out the words from this distance. No evil is detected in the tavern.}

====================

Dernock contemplates Hank's question while tasting his ale. What is keeping him from passing over? What does he need to come to terms with? Hank seems to have noticed something going on behind Dernock, and on looking for himself, Dernock notices the doors to the tavern open. It must be night outside, as it is very dark. You can't see anyone enter.

====================

Gentlemen, I now hand DM posting over to Cayzle who will be running this encounter...

Dernock Uristson HP n/a [Dead]
Friday August 24th, 2012 1:40:04 AM

"I dunnae think I want to rest yet, there's too much injustice in the Wold. Yer were a victim along with several thousands others an' I wanna to see those that commited this unspeakable crime put in front of a jury. I wan them to answer fer their crimes. To be done away because a simple chink in mah armour an' a inability to resist magicks seems like an injustice itself. Maybe I'm bein' selfish but I wanna hear the appropriate authority to tell me 'No.Dernock, Ya done,ya not good enough, let someone else take the case.' an' until then I'm stickin' around. He goes on finishing with swig at his beer.

maogOOC Sorry busy afternoon. Also need to retcon. Dernock meant to say last two months not four..

Sam SnapdragonMcFisticuff -- 18/15/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 25/32
Friday August 24th, 2012 7:02:48 AM

Sam stands up and peers through the door. He doesn't speak or draw his crossbow. Unsure of what to do in a situation like this, Sam waits to follow, not lead.

Shonti AC15/14/11 - CMD14 - HP13/34
Friday August 24th, 2012 10:14:00 AM

Shonti stares in amazement for a second at Dernock though the gateway, then looks back to his lifeless body on this side of it.. Hardly able to believe what he thinks he see's, and sensing no evil through on the other side, Shonti stands up, and begins to walk through. Turning around just before entering, This is it lads, we must pray that Gargul be merciful, and that he may spare the life of our Brother. We must go forth, and brind Dernock home.

Shonti first puts a hand through the doorway, trying to see if it is solid, then as his arm begins to fade through to the Other Side, Shonti steps on through.. Upon entering the tavern, Shonti walks over towards Dernock, calling out to him. Dernock! We have come to bring you home with us brother.

He then looks to the Imp. I seek a counsel with Gargul, hallowed be thy name. Shonti Zarbadium, at your service.

Hank
Friday August 24th, 2012 10:36:23 AM

The person with whom Dernock has been talking nods when he declares that he is not done with the Wold, not yet.

"You know," the friendly fellow says, "some people think that bein' a hero is all about power or protecting the innocent or standing up for what's right. But I think it's just as much about not knowing when to quit."

He grins.

"Case in point, I think you got some friends showin' up for a visit."

The figure points to the new strange doorway. "Come on, then, Don't be shy," he says to the heroes clustered around the body of their dead friend. "We have a ways to go before we are done. 'Further Up and Further In,' as they say."

Shinto AC: 20 (SR:15) CMD: 21/25 HP: 12/42
Friday August 24th, 2012 10:37:17 AM

Shinto remains emotionless as the wold becomes silent, nothing will ever be as mindblowing as living through that blast. The door way though, that is more than mindblowing. Supernatural, if you will. Shinto wears a grim face as he watches his brother move through the portal.

Not wasting time, Shinto jumps up, unsnapping the leather latch that holds his flail in place. With his hand on the flails shaft he steps through and moves off tothe right side allowing others to follow through. He makes his way through the crowd, squinted eyes glued to the imp. Stopping about ten feet short of the creature, he nods as Shonti speaks.

is this the same Imp we saw in the tunnel? Whats gin on here..

Sam SnapdragonMcFisticuff -- 18/15/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 25/32
Friday August 24th, 2012 12:58:51 PM

Sam follows Shinto's lead, but walks up to Dernock.

"How are you doing brother? We're here to try to bring you back with us."

In Abyssal to the imp,"Who are you?"

Bruagh Stormbringer AC 26/12/22 -- CMD 18/22 -- HP 33/53
Friday August 24th, 2012 4:41:40 PM

Bruagh enters the tavern as solemnly and reverently as possible. He lets his Paladin instincts take over glaring at the imp in an effort to detect evil from the creature. He says nothing yet, still trying to decide what is what.

Eh, Not bad all considerin', I dun wanna spoil it too much, but yer may wanna carry a coin or two wid yer all the time Dernock says with a grin before becoming serious. Dun be so certain, As far as I know, we're just makin' an appeal to a higher authority, I dun even know I have a case. he tells Sam, not trying to get anyone's hope up.

Devlin -- AC 27/16/21 -- CMD 19 -- HP 26/31 Shield 6/10
Friday August 24th, 2012 6:28:01 PM

Devlin hand passes through the body of Dernock and he pulls it back with a start. He looks around to see if the others are equally afflicted. Seeing that they all are he begins to follow through the doorway. As he passes into the tavern he can't help but check the area to see if there is anyone else present. He nods to what can only be Dernock's soul. Hey lad, hows are ya feeling? Looking at the other being in the room the rogues eyes narrow as his hand casually brushes against his crossbow. When the creature talks of moving onward Devlin only nods.

Sarnak nods in response to Tanhi's comments, ready and willing to attempt to bring Dernock back. As the room appears in front of him, he walked through with the rest of the group. He raised a eyebrow at the imp, but focused on Dernock. "Indeed, were not quite ready to let you go off to the afterlife, and we're here to see if we can bring you back."

Taggart Oathbreaker 20/15/16 - 24/32 - CMD 20
Saturday August 25th, 2012 12:40:45 AM

As the idea comes up to revive Dernock, Taggart pulls his hood further over his face. All that can be seen as the ritual is complete is his mouth, the same thin, grim line as before. An arrow is in his empty hand as he fiddles with it nervously in the tavern. He hopes that enough people are distracted by Dernock and the imp to the point where they do not seem him shaking with fear.

Dernock Uristson HP n/a [Dead]
Saturday August 25th, 2012 5:12:53 AM

Fine I think, Still shocked. The Beer helped. Dernock replies to Devlin. Since I can't be sure o' the outcome an I dunno how much time we'll have for goodbyes, can I ask o' you to be damn well sure you get that bomb that's in mah bag to the proper experts? He request of him although he's really directing the request to the group at large.

Hank. Or rather, Gimp the Imp.
Saturday August 25th, 2012 11:07:55 AM

Sam asks "Hank" who he is. By now even Dernock sees the creature as he really is, and the inn or tavern has just about faded away.

You find yourself on a grey featureless landscape. There are small cold sharp stars far overhead. The only color is a swath of dark red glowing fluid flowing in a rivulet off to one side. The creature is a short, ugly little man, complete with a long hooked nose and warts covering his face. His legs are short, and they move fast as he leads the party forward.

"I'm Gimp, of course, the servant of the master. I'll take you to him. Come this way."

As he leads you, the imp tells you about the danger you are about to face. "You DO realize that you are about to meet a GOD? The actual god of life and death, the greatest of all gods, the one who straddles two great pantheons? In ages long past, he CREATED the creatures you call dragons. And many other monsters."

"For four ages of the Wold's long life, mortals feared him, and called him evil. And maybe he was, or became so. But as the Wold has changed, so have the Gods. The master is god of Life and Death. He stands above. SO you better make sure you keep a civil tongue in your mouth!"

Gimp barks a high-pitched laugh. "One time a hero did not keep a civil tongue in her mouth, and the master made it fall out."

The imp leads you to a high hill. At the top, on a dark throne, sits a robed figure. "You go on up. I'll wait here." There is a twinkle in his eye. He is clearly enjoying this.

Sam SnapdragonMcFisticuff -- 18/15/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 25/32

Sam does what a bard rarely does. He says nothing and waits for the mighty god to speak.

Shonti AC15/14/11 - CMD14 - HP13/34
Saturday August 25th, 2012 11:58:45 AM

Shonti reassures Dernock, Yes brother, We'll get that bomb taken care of, before following Gimp the Imp forward to the dark hill. At the foot of the hill, Shonti realizes this could very well be the end of all of our lives, if it is Gargul's will to make it so.

My God! My Lord, my Creator is right in front of me... Every living thing's Creator... And I am about to ask him to give Dernock another life? One that Dernock was already given once... Will he think we are not thankful for what he has done already? Is it wrong of us to come to him to ask this miracle? I hope we are doing the right thing here.......

Shaking his head to clear his mind before going to meet his maker, Shonti doesn't even reply to the Imp, he just nods to him as he continues past him, and starts up the hill to Gargul. Once Shonti nears the throne upon the top of the hill, he drops to his knees and bows his head to Gargul. Hail Gargul! My Lord, please have mercy upon our souls, and forgive us for entering your saced kingdom uninvited. We have come to speak with you, with good reason... Shall I stand before you, My God?

Shonti remains on his knees, head bowed, and hands pressed together, unless Gargul grants him permission to stand, and look at him face to face.

Shinto AC: 20 (SR:15) CMD: 21/25 HP: 12/42
Saturday August 25th, 2012 7:46:41 PM

Shinto follows Gimp fairly closely while his eyes stare at the rivulet. The warrior within is ready for it to rise and swallow us whole, but the dwarf inside is weak and tired, this meeting with Gargul could mean the end of Shinto Zarbadium. The god of life and Death. We are askin for a new life fer one that Gargul jus granted death. Askin fer a reconsideration of his first choice, tis could very well be me last request.

Lost in hos own thoughts he hardly realized they reached the hill. Ill wait here hearing Gimp say those words is what brought Shinto back from his worries. He started up the hill staying just behind his brother, knowing Shonti had always worshiped Gargul he figured if the request was to be made Shonti would know the best way to make it.

So Shinto followed suit and dropped to his knees, his hands pressed together and head bowed, he let his brother do the talking and stayed silent.

Dernock Uristson HP n/a [Dead]
Saturday August 25th, 2012 9:50:10 PM

Dernock feels a bit uncomfortable. How does one address a god anyway? He shrugs and let's the more well spoken members of the party take care of it. 'Yer honor' would have to do, it's worked fr every other higher up he's addressed and no one has ever bothered to correct him yet.

Devlin -- AC 27/16/21 -- CMD 19 -- HP 26/31 Shield 6/10
Saturday August 25th, 2012 9:59:34 PM

Devlin slowly takes his gaze off Gimp and focuses on the hill and the figure astride it. As he follows the others up his footsteps are heavy. Is this even possible? We just up and come ta talk to a God? Might you please give us our friend back? He's a great Dwarf and he died horribly. Ohh and hes better than all the other Dwarves that died today. Devlin shakes his head to clear his thoughts. No room for negativity now were in the thick of it once again. Wardd grant us your luck. As soon as the prayer crosses into his thought he winces and looks up to the hill and the figure. I need ta stop thinking to myself The rogue quietly mutters.

On reaching the top Devlin takes a knee and lowers his head in reverence.

The Figure On The Throne
Sunday August 26th, 2012 9:11:19 AM

You leave Gimp behind and walk up the hill. Sam, Shinto, Dernock, Devlin, Taggart, and Sarnack are all silent in awe and humility. Shonti, Shinto, Devlin, and Taggart even kneel.

Before you, within a black hooded robe, a bare skull stares out. You can read no expression on his bony, noseless face. The seated figure waits, sitting stock still, as silent as the grave.

At the base of the hill, Gimp gives Bruagh a nudge. The paladin, standing and concentrating on the imp, detects no evil in the creature. "He's waiting for you!" Gimp, capering around the holy warrior, tells Bruagh.

Shonti makes a heartfelt appeal as a servant of his very god! How amazing to be in the presence of his own god. Perhaps this place, however, deadens the emotions, calms the soul, because Shonti does not feel as awestruck as he might have thought he would be at the feet of Gargul himself.

Nonetheless, Shonti speaks carefully, with humility, and with care. The figure remains seated, still and silent. He makes no sign at all that he has heard a word.

Sam SnapdragonMcFisticuff -- 18/15/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 25/32

Sam stays perfectly still. Not a word exits his mouth. As Gargul sits and says nothing, Sam becomes more afraid. Only his eyes move from hard left to right as he tries to catch a view of one of his kin through his periphery. He hopes that he isn't missing something as Gargul silently stares at them.

Shinto, with his eyes closed, head bowed and on his knees waits for what seems like an eternity after Shontis ends his opening to the almighty God of life and Death. But when Gargul never says a wors, Shinto tires of not looking at his surroundings so the, now, holy warrior raises his head and opens his eyes. Seeing the fleshless and emotionless face Shinto forms a lump in his throat, butterflys in his stomach. The extreme of nervousness he hasnt known for decades.

this is a GOD!? he thinks to himself as he meets Garguls stare for wht seems like another life time. Until finally he sums up enough courage to speak, Thank you Domi, helpin me confront Gargul himself.

We present ourselves humbled and respectfully, but yet get no response? Owe it to us you may not, but our request is just and cor the betta of the wold.

Sam cringes as Shinto speaks. He waits to see if either Shinto has a nice dialogue with the almighty Gargul or explodes into flames.

Shonti AC15/14/11 - CMD14 - HP13/34
Sunday August 26th, 2012 10:08:28 PM

Shonti feels his eyes and face tighten as Shinto calls out to The Lord Gargul.. He remains on his knees, his legs starting to shake underneath of him. Shonti is getting nervous now that he is in the presence of his God, and that Gargul did not aknowledge his words, and even more so once his Shinto spoke.....

What is he thinking!? Not even properly addressing my God? I can't believe we are here in the Shadow Realm... The Throne of my God right before my eyes... Yet I cannot face him.. He won't speak to me? Have I not shown him the proper respects? It is only right, Gargul will know that Dernock's death was unnatural and that he should yet be living... What will my Lord ask of me, once he hears my request? Only one way to find out..... Might as well get to the point, no sense wasting the time of my God.

Knowing within himself that this is the right thing to do, and not wanting to speak directly to Gargul again so soon, and not wanting to offend his God, Shonti keeps his head bowed and his hands pressed together. He then begins muttering a prayer under his breath, knowing that Gargul will hear him, whether he seems to or not....

Gargul, my Lord... First and foremost, please forgive my brother Shinto's outburst....... Please also know that we have come to you, not expecting anything other than what is your will to be done here on this day. We come not to disturb the natural order of Life and Death, oh Great God, rather to ask you to bring about a balance to it... So many good Dwarves and Gnomes, and a great number of Duerger have been sent to their eternal resting place today in this terrible battle of Good VS. Evil.... Not one died a natural death today, and none were put through unnatural suffering today by the hands here before you, my Lord.. But, one of ours has passed today, and not yet moved onto the afterlife.. This, being a burden to your Grim followers. I ask of you, my Lord, to relieve yourself of this burden upon your Grim ones, and I pray that you can find it within the kindness of your heart to grant our brothers life back to him.... Whatever your decision, if you let us leave here with our lives today my Lord, Gargul, I, myself will repay you for your kindness, my Lord, whatever the cost.. If you wish it be my Eye, my God, pluck it from my socket Gargul, you shall have it. If you wish it be my devout following, doing your will, my Lord, I shall. Removing the Undead from the Wold, Releasing souls trapped from moving onto their afterlife, or Destroying soulless beings, and rebirthing lost souls.... Anything you wish Gargul, may your will be done by my hand... Please, I beg of you Master.... Return Dernock's soul to his body. Give him Life again, my Lord... Show my brothers your greatness.....

With that, Shonti still remains on his knees, bowing to his God.. Never moving so much as a single muscle aside from those used to speak his prayers to Gargul.

Sunday August 26th, 2012 10:24:20 PM

Yer honor, I be guessin' as the petitioner or defendant I best be statin' mah case. I be Dernock Uristson, former sargent of the Riddlport watch. Me and mah well, we've been through so much in the last few days, so I have t'say friends have come to request yer grant me mah life back. Now I dun know if I even a case. I mean my death itself was short, relatively painless an' Honorable.

However, I don't think want to move on yet. I sure you've noticed the bombs the Duergar have been employin'. The vast quantities of life they can extinguish, the devastation they wrought. I'm not sure how but I wanna bring them to justice. The murder o' thousands o' innocent lives needs to not go unpunished an' I cant acomplish that in death.

The Figure On The Throne - and Advice from Below
Monday August 27th, 2012 7:23:32 AM

In the face of appeals -- sincere and borderline rude -- the enthroned figure maintains his stony silence. He is as still and silent as a statue, or a corpse.

From the base of the hill, Gimp whispers in your ear, somehow: "Half of you who are standing should kneel! Half of you who are kneeling should grovel! Groveling is good! No one ever got killed who groveled! Maybe wiggle around on the ground some!"

If you make a Sense Motive check vs DC 20, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You get a hunch that Gimp finds this highly amusing.}

Shinto looks to everyone, one at. Time, meeting the eyes of those that are open and nodding to the ones whos closed them. Finally he kneels once more, and bows his head to the floor with hands outstretched, palms flat against the ground. Raising up, still on his knees, he bows again. 5 times he does this in succession, murmuring a prayer Gargul almighty Shinto Zarbadium offers prayer to you as I bow at yer feet and pray for the life of a brother killed with honor. We offer to complete one request if you complete ours, return Dernocks soul to his body, fer hes not ready to go to the land of rest, hes still more good to do, and evil to bring to justice.

As Shinto completes his prayer he keeps his head low and palms on the ground, but his eyes meet Garguls silent stare, awaiting a response. His throat clear and his stomach settled, he now holds his proud demeanor as he normally does. He takes long deep breaths as he awaits Garguls reply.

Shonti has no desire to move from where he is now, unless Gargul directs him differently. He will wait a while longer, praying silently that Gargul will make his will known to them.

Usually I am all for posting over the weekend, and the one time we actually do is the one time I was crazy busy.

Bruagh would have kneeled when he first entered, remaining silent, solemn, and reverent in the face of a god he feels an affinity for. While Bruagh has always worshiped Domi, and is a faithful servant of said god, he has, especially since the death of his family, prayed frequently to the god of death. In the face of such a being, Bruagh is reverent not only for those reasons, but also because it is rarely a good idea to be rude to someone more powerful than you.

At Gimp's behest, the Paladin completely prostrates himself in front of Gargul, showing his reverence.

I would like to think I could at least keep mah dignity, seeing it's on of the few things I have left. So be it! He complains and then reluctantly kneels before this silent god. He then smirks at an amusing thought. It would be ironic if the God of Death turned out to be in fact dead on his throne

The True God
Tuesday August 28th, 2012 9:07:49 AM

You all hear another whisper from Gimp: "Good! Good! Now all say, 'I, sir, am a wiggly worm, sir!' "

The heroes lay or kneel in varied poses of prostration, awe, and respect. Alone among them, maybe because he has already faced death after a fashion, Dernock has a suspicion that all is not as it seems. [OOC: Dernock, please accept a hero point and the Woldian Trait "Gargul the Purifier" as a reward for your insight.]

But before you have a chance to refuse or accept the imp's suggestion, a presence intrudes on your awareness.

As like the sun rising, but if all your long days had passed in the length of a single night, and now, at last and for the first time, were a magnificent orb of light rising to the assault of your eyes, so would this seem to you. However, the presence does not radiate from the sad dead skeleton sitting as it was placed, on a chair draped with black cloth before you. And in an instant, especially those with a connection to the divine, and the more so for Shonti, perhaps the thought occurs: "Of course! How could I have been so fooled? Now it is obvious."

Behind you, on the side of the hill away from the presence, you hear Gimp say, "Oh noes!" -- and you hear a popping sound, too. Roll a Know Arcana check vs DC12 and then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {It is the sudden onrush of air that signals teleportation magic.}

For in the distance, and then striding closer, and then walking up the hill before you can react, a muscular human holding a staff mounts the hillside. His dark thick hair is shot with gray, and his features are worn with his labors. By his scarred leather hands and his scarred leather apron you may deduce that he is a working god, this God of Life and Death, not sitting around in Haven Far engaged in song and philosophy, nor fighting mock battles with souls as pawns, treating the Lands of Unrest as a huge board of chess.

So comes Gargul.

His expression is fierce and fell. He stands before the skeleton on the chair and says, "No. Just ... No." And the chair, the robe, the bones, the false god is gone, as if it had never existed, in an eye-blink.

If any of our heroes are still kneeling or prostrate, the strong man stoops to lift you up. His face is dreadful and his eyes are kind. You just cannot tell if the twist of his mouth is a scowl of disapproval, or an attempt to not laugh out loud.

He speaks. "I fear my loyal and faithful servant has gone too far this time. But he cannot go far enough to evade his punishment. He will apologize to you."

Suddenly, Gimp appears, on tip-toes, head cocked as if his ear were in the inexorable pinch of the greatest Bigby's Hand ever. "It was just a joke! I didn't say it was you, Master! They just assumed it was! Come on, it was a classic! Does no one have a sense of humor any more?!"

The deformed imp is shaken like a rag doll in the grip of a vengeful toddler.

"I'M SORRY! I'M SORRY! I'M SORRY!" Gimp shrieks.

Shonti rises to his feet as Gargul uplifts him, remaining silent, knowing that his God has heard his prayers. Knowing just how serious a matter this really is, to him at least, when Gimp the Imp screams apologetically, Shonti shoots him a rough glare, then turns his eyes upon Gargul, his glare now a gaze of awe, and speaks to him.

Thank you, my Lord, but the Imp lies. Faithful though he may be, I truely believe one should be a little more serious when speaking of my God. Were we not in your presence already, I would see to it that someone mocking you as such would soon be.....

Not wanting to waste anymore time of his God, Shonti returns to the matter at hand.
Gargul, oh exalted one... We have come to you this day, my brothers and I, to ask of you something that only you could possibly see done. That is to say, we have come to you, my Lord praying that you would grant our brother his Life back.. I do not wish to seem wanting of you, my God, so I ask not that you grant him Life without giving anything in return.... The only question I have, Gargul, blessed be thy name, is What can I do in return for this ultimate favor which we seek? Shall I serve you forevermore as an Eye of yours? A Grim? A Seeker of Souls? To Hunt the Undead? Or do you wish I bring you an offering of my own? Whatever your will may be, my Lord, may it be done by my hand.

Gargul looks from one talkative dwarf to the next. Gimp starts to grin as he hears the forgiving comments from Sam, Shinto, Devlin, Dernock, and Sarnak.

Bruagh and Tag keep their own council.

Before the God of Life and Death can prompt you, Shonti speaks up. He offers his service as a payment for the life if his friend.

Gargul grins at the heroes before him -- or maybe he is frowning. It is hard to tell. But his eyes are kindly. "I am pleased with your good natures, your respect, and your devotion. But there is more to this than a bargain. Dernock, tell me why you wish to return to the Wold. And for you others, is it Shonti alone who is willing to offer something of value?"

"Remember that for all things there is a time for living and for dying. Why should this dwarf have another chance at life? Keep in mind the circumstances of his death. Keep in mind the many around us who will have no second chance."

He gestures broadly, and for a moment you see all the dead souls of your recent battlefield, flocking around you, some sad, others joyful. Then they pass from your sight.

Is it Shonti alone who is willing to offer something of value?
At these words, Shonti looks at those around him... Hoping, no, waiting for someone else to speak up...
Are they willing to offer anything for Dernock's life? I barely even know the lad, yet at the moment, his life seems to be the most important thing in mine... Do they not see it this way?

Remember that for all things there is a time for living and for dying...
At this, Shonti remains silent.
Is this really his time to go? It can't be... But I cannot speak for reasons as to why he should be allowed another life.. Although his death was unnatural, caused by an army of Evil, yet so were so many of these other souls around us.... I believe he still has purpose in this life... But is it enough for me alone to believe?

When Gargul mentions those many around who will have no second chance, the tears begin freely flowing down the Dwarven Paladins face. Bruagh looks up to face the god of death but remains kneeling. "My lord Gargul, I know all to well that so very precious few receive second chances, for my wonderful wife Lila, and young son Bruan have been here with you for nearly four years. But I also know that Dernock can better serve you in the realm of the living than here my lord. I also know of nothing I could swear to you today that I would do that would be equal to the value of the life we hope to bring back in the Wold with us. We already attempt to snuff out all undead that we find and have destroyed many so that they might find eternal rest. And unfortunately my lord I can not swear myself into your service, as I have already sworn my life to Domi."

With that Bruagh bows his head back down hoping they have done enough to have Dernock brought back to them. He does glance around hoping to catch a glimpse of either Lila of Bruan.

Devlin takes a moment to sort his thoughts out before speaking to Gargul. My lord, Dernock was a guard for the town of Riddleport. His town was wiped out by an infernal mechanism that was a bomb the darkbloods created. We have proof of these bombs with us. We also know that after the explosion almost the entire city of Riddleport was turned into a horde of undead. Some were mere zombies but others came back as flaming skeletons and wretched abominations. There is a link to these bombs, the undead and something demonic taking place in the scab. We are in need of every able Dwarf there is. We ask that Dernock be returned to us not out of grief, but for the fact that he is a strong fighter and had intimate knowledge of what is happening. If you give Dernock back to us, I pledge that I will exterminate any undead that cross our path to the best of my ability. I may not be one of your devout but I know an unnatural evil when I see one. With your blessing and Wardd's luck I will continue our quest to expose this threat to The Scab and the Wold as well.

Devlin takes a step back as he finishes, he looks weary and drained. Having to bring up terrors seen in Riddleport leave him shaken. He awaits the gods judgment, his smile now a distant memory.

Shonti waits to see what his friends will say.

A consensus quickly emerges. First Bruagh, then Devlin, Sam, Shinto, and Sarnak all declare their intent to devote themselves to the extermination of the undead in the Scab.

Taggart is different. He declares his own history, one that must be painful to confront, and declares the value of Dernock's life.

And Dernock himself explains his feeling that there is more for him to do in the Wold, that he feels his work is not yet done.

Gargul looks at each of you with kind, tired eyes, but you also feel the glare of a single lidless eye staring into your soul. The god speaks to you in turn.

"I accept your service," he says to Shonti. "Follow one of my paths when you are ready. But dally not."

"I accept your dedication," he says to Bruagh, Devlin, Sam, Shinto, and Sarnak. "Prove your dedication by acquiring and keeping ready a magical item that bears the quality known as 'Undead Bane'."

"I accept your honesty and commitment to the life of your friend," he says to Taggart. "Prove your dedication to your friend by acting with true heroism to come to his aid." OOC: You may not use a hero point for yourself until after you first use one to help Dernock via the "Bonus" use under the PF APG Hero Point rules: "Hero points spent to aid another character grant only half the listed bonus (+4 before the roll, +2 after the roll)." Note that Gargul will be unhappy indeed if the use is frivolous, ineffectual, or designed to discharge the obligation as soon as possible.

"And I accept that your role in the play has not yet seen its final curtain," he says to Dernock. "However, there is more to tell, is there not? In the battle that led to your death, you moved forward to attack your enemies, who were spellcasters. In doing so you charged ahead of your friends, careless of your own life. And your friends therefore could not aid you as they might have wished. Moreover, it was only through a heroic effort that you survived an earlier brush with death."

Gargul looks weary and annoyed, with no trace of mercy. Dernock, I grant you life again. But guard it well. When I next I receive you in my lands, it will be to take you to the Haven Far. There will be no second chance to return to the Wold. Therefore, I charge you, learn wisdom!"

The god of life and death lifts his staff, and you are likewise lifted in a whirl of shadow stuff. The magic that brought you here is at an end, and you find yourselves standing back in the Wold as you left it -- except that your comrade Dernock is among the living again.

Dernock's eyes open, and he can see each of his friends leaning over him - each touching a part of his body. Two clerics (one an elf) are also at his side.

Each of the party blink a few times as they regain their bearings, and it is indeed a happy moment when you notice Dernock too is alive.

Surrounding the small group stand a ring of dwarven soldiers with their backs turned to you - as if they are guarding or protecting you from an outside presence. Fresh blood spray can be seen on Tally's white cloak and on Tahni's cheek. The dwarven cleric appears to have been crying.

Behind Tally lays Captain Redforge. A black crossbow bolt protudes from his neck. Dende kneels by his side. With Dernock now conscious, Tally moves to see what he can do for the Captain before stopping. Tally shakes his head and then reaches out to close RedForge's eyes.

"He threw himself in the way to protect Tally" BlackAxe explains solemnly with arms crossed "None of us saw it coming, save for him. Some lean duergar on the roof with a crossbow. I've got patrols looking now, but we should move inside"

BlackAxe gives a signal, and any surving gnomes and dwarves are escorted inside the buildings. Captain RedForge's body is also brought in.

The mood of the party is soured with the realisation that Captain RedForge is dead. Life truly is fragile here in the Scab.

Devlin and Taggart quickly disappear from sight, staying to the shadows. The two make their way to the rooftop without incident, however no trace of the duergar assassin can be found. Scratched onto a tile (near where you both concur the shot would likely have come from) are the words "Catch you soon cutie".

The party are provided rooms and facilities to clean themselves and to finally rest. That night the party gather for a ceremony to be led by General BlackAxe and Tally in the main hall.

The party are granted front row seats, along with both Dende and Tahni who sit either side of Bruagh. Hundreds of dwarves and gnomes appear to be in attendance - though significantly less than you observed at MountainBurrow.

Captain RedForge's body lies atop a stone sarcophagus at the front of the hall. He wears a polished suit of plate armor. Mithral perhaps? His hair and beard are clean, and his eyes are closed. He seems to be at peace.

The sarcophagus is void of any carvings typical of dwarven culture. It is very plain with no markings at all.

Standing in front of the sarcophagus, BlackAxe raises his arms, beckoning for silence from the crowd. When all is silent, he begins to speak:

"My friends, today is a day that will be remembered in history. We have reclaimed a piece of our homeland. And though this should seem a time to celebrate, we also mourn our brethren who gave their lives so that we might see this day. The lives of many friends were lost today. Their families should be proud to have had such fine warriors bless their clan, and we should be proud to say we stood side by side with them" He pauses, bowing his head for a moment before addressing the audience again. "Each life lost weighs heavily on me, but none moreso than the loss of Captain Orir RedForge. Orir was the finest of us all. A trusted advisor, a fierce combatant, a respected leader, and above all a good friend."

BlackAxe's voice starts to croak. "Tally, if you would lead us in prayer?" BlackAxe gestures to the cleric

Tally steps forward. He is dressed in his finest white robes. He speaks with a booming voice

"Return this man to Domi's breast
Beyond the wild, impartial skies;
Grant him a warrior's rest
And set the last spark of his eyes
Free from the smothering clouds of scars
Upon the torches of the stars.

Let the last surge of his breath
Take refuge in the cradling air
Above the dreams of ravens, where
Only the hawk remembers death.
Then let his shade to Domi rise,
Beyond the wild, impartial skies"

Tally nods to BlackAxe and then returns to his seat. Tahni reaches out to take hold of Bruagh's hand.

BlackAxe resumes his position at the head of the congregation.

"My friends, as rightful heir to Drakesmeade, and in honour of Orir, I hereby announce the creation of the RedForge Medal of Dwarven Valour. These medals will be bestowed upon those who live up to Orir's high standards, and bring honour to our nation. The first of these medals, I am honored to present to Dende StoneHammer."

Dende audibly gasps, obviously surprised by this turn of events. He rises from his seat to a round of applause and makes his way to BlackAxe.

"Dende here was in one of the squads that infiltrated via Tunnel C. As many of you know, Captain StoneFist was leading that squad and was an early casualty. Showing great courage, young Dende here took up his axe and charged a heavily fortified duergar position allowing the rest of the squad to safely exit the tunnel. Whilst many would be content to stop there, Dende then led a small number of dwarves throughout DrakesMeade, and ambushed no less than 7 enemy patrols. For your bravery and the honour you bring to the dwarven nation, it is my priviledge to bestow this medal upon you, Dende StoneHammer."

Tally steps forward with a medal which he passes to BlackAxe, who in turn places it over Dende's head to a round of applause. The dwarven lad is blushing, but grinning from ear to ear. BlackAxe whispers something to Dende, and the boy shakes his head in response.

"The next medal - or medals I should say - I present to our advance scouting party. Dernock Uriston and Taggart Oathbreaker are the only two surviving members of a three man scouting party that were able to provide us with intelligence on the tunnels that ultimately ensured our successful campaign. Rather than simply report back their findings, these two took it upon themselves to join with our infiltration team and fight from within. I also award a medal to Wesneck SilverArm posthumously for his role in this party.

Finally, where would we be without our infiltration team. Bruagh Stormbringer, Sam SnapdragonMcFisticuff, Devlin Dealbreaker, Sarnak, and the brothers Shinto and Shonti. Freeing numerous prisoners, placing their lives in danger for the greater good of our nation, and knocking off many duergar heads in the process - our nation will thrive from your actions this day."

Loud applause and cheering resounds throughout the hall. BlackAxe gestures for you to join him where he presents each of you with your medal. As he places the medal over each head, he whispers to you advising that these medals are only temporary until real ones can be made, and invites each of you to address the audience.

Sam is in awe as he eyes his metal (temporary medal). He looks at his companions on either side of him and decides to say a few words. He steps forward, pulls out his jeweled scepter, and speaks through it (not too loudly) to the group.

"My fellow dwarves and gnomes. This is a special day for us all. It is a day when we stood up to our oppressors and drove them from DrakesMeade. We saved our brothers and sisters from slavery and death and took back what is ours. Let's not forget those who fought and died for this important cause. They have payed the ultimate price. May they always be honored and may we keep their sacrifice in our hearts and minds from this day on." (oratory=25)

Sam lowers the scepter and smiles as he finishes his speech. As the audience applauds, cheers, or remains silent, memories and images of the recent events assault his attention to his surroundings. He sees himself manipulating the bomb with demonic hands as everything whirls black around him. He feels their presence overshadowing him.

"Who are you? What do you want with me?"

As the images fade, Sam snaps back to reality. He quickly stuffs the scepter back into his bag, gives a quick wave to the crowd and heads out of the hall. Sam goes back to his room, closes the door, and climbs into bed.

Sarnak looks down to the medal he recieved for a moment, before saluting blackaxe as he turns and begins to walk towards the crowd after Sam and Shinto make their speeches. "I'm not as skilled at wordplay as the two previous, but me and my Eidolon are here to serve the Members of Drakesmeade until the day we die, and shall treat any that threaten it with as much if not more ferocity than we did the Duergar!"

He steps off the podium, and waits for the group to finish their speeches before turning to them. "After the events we just went through, I'm going to invest in crafting a couple wands. I just kept running out of spells, I'm going to see if I can't fix that. Anyone have anything in particular they want?"

By the time the party have finished their speeches, the crowd are on their feet. BlackAxe raises his hands to silence the crowd.
"Over the next 3 days I invite those of you who wish to, to come up here to aid in the carvings of Orir's funerary box. Scenes from his life, the battles he fought and won, the countless times he spent helping his fellow dwarves and gnomes. These tools will be here at all hours" he says gesturing to some very fancy stone masonry tools currently resting beside Captain RedForge's body. The tools would appear to be adamantine, and the handles ivory - intricately detailed. "We will then see that his body is properly laid with his kin".

"Friends. That is all I have to say tonight. Let us rest from this long day and remember in our prayers those that fell today. Tomorrow we celebrate the homecoming of the dwarves!" BlackAxe raises his fist in the air and the crowd once again cheer.

The party are escorted through DrakesMeade to the officer's quarters where each person is allocated a room of their own to rest. The rooms still contain some of the possessions of their former occupants (ie: duergar officers) but they are clean and comfortable.

====================

The next day the party are given a simple tour of DrakesMeade - mess hall this way, armory that way, etcetera - before being left to their own devices to explore the outpost. BlackAxe has already started to arrange for a number of the refugees from MountainBurrow to be transferred here, and everywhere you look people are happily at work repairing, cleaning, and judging by the number of ale barrels being rolled in - preparing for one heck of a party.

Whilst quite a few people shy away from Sarnak and Kyachi - the eidolon proving somewhat of a strange and unusual sight to most - a small group of children have apparently taken an interest in her. You note the children goading each other to see who can get the closest to Kyachi, before squealing and running back to the group much to the delight of the others. One boy looks to have fashioned a hood from a hessian sack "I'm Taggart and I'm not afraid of anything!" he proudly declares as he moves towards Kyachi. Though trying to appear brave and perhaps convincing his friends, the boy looks to be trying very hard not to run back to the safety of his group.

As the party walk the halls of DrakesMeade, a group of gnomes wave to Sam from what used to be the barracks. The barracks have been quickly converted into living quarters for many of the families. The men kneel before Sam and shake his hand, and a number of the women give him a kiss on the cheek
"It's him! The gnome hero!"
"He's the one that saved me from the duergar, kids"
"Tell us how you led the invasion, Sam!"
"Oh please would you tell us"
They sit on the beds and the ground, huddled around and listening.

Taggart and Devlin find their way to training area, and observe a number of dwarves trying to use bows and crossbows against straw targets. Hopefully these are new recruits, as their aim leaves little to be desired. There is much they could learn about ranged attacks. It takes a while before they notice your presence, but when they do you notice them all trying to stand a little taller and puffing their chests a little more. Their accuracy against the targets does not improve.

Tahni and Bruagh walk along hand-in-hand and seemingly without a care in the world. Having spent time at MountainBurrow, the dwarven woman is familiar with many of the people around. She and Bruagh take the time to talk to the refugees, and provide healing wherever able. When they have a quiet moment, Tahni asks the question that has been on her mind "Do.... do you think you will be staying here a while?"

Shinto and Dernock "somehow" manage to find their way to the mess hall, where a barrel of ale has already been opened. A number of soldiers - many nursing wounds - have already started celebrating. "'s dem!" slurs one raising a tankard. Shinto and Dernock are promptly ushered towards the ale and seats near the middle of the pack. One dwarven lass promptly seats herself on Shinto's lap and throws her arms around him, as another promptly takes Dernock's face in her hands and plants a kiss on him. "Funny - he doesn't kiss like he's dead" she tells the drunken group, amidst laughter and wolf-whistles.

Shonti discovers Tally seated at a table in the library. The elf sits very still, staring at the empty table before him. Sensing another presense, Tally looks up and smiles briefly on seeing Shonti "I fear this victory may be only temporary" he says, gesturing for Shonti to take a seat "Our losses were great, and I fear that when the duergar retaliate we will not be able to defend ourselves"

Sam is shocked by the "hero's welcome" from his fellow gnomes. He leaves his friends and decides to tell the best story he can, as any good bard should.

"Gather round big and little gnomes alike. I will tell you the story of how we recaptured DrakesMeade, But before I begin, we can't have a story without main characters."

"As most of you know my name is Sam.
I'm a bard and a mighty proud gnome.
I'm fast with a spell, and loud with my yell,
And now DrakeMeade is where I call home."

"Next there is Bruagh our fine paladin.
He's Domi's warrior right to the end.
With heart and axe he does fight, for what's known to be right.
He's a great dwarf that I'm glad to have as my friend.'

"Then we have Devlin the rogue.
He's silent and deadly to boot.
His bolts fly through the sky in the blink of an eye.
The Duergar never once hear him shoot."

"Let's not forget Taggart the ranger.
He's another fine stealthy guy.
His arrows always find their mark, even when shot in the dark.
In the shadows is where he does spy."

"Then we have Dernock the fighter.
A mighty strong dwarf is he.
Many hits he can take, as enemy skulls he does break.
A tougher ally in life there can't be."

"This brings us to Sarnak and Kyachi.
A summoner and his vicious eidolon.
Spells Sarnak does lend and Kyachi's claws, they do rend.
I just realized nothing rhymes with eidolon..."

"Last, but not least Shonti and Shinto.
Caster and fighter unlike any other.
They we did choose, so that we wouldn't lose.
Did I mention they share the same mother?"

Sam smiles and says, "Now you know my friends. Now hear our part in the story of the retaking of DrakesMeade.

He tells the story from the point in time when Baldesac was driven away. The zombie hoard, Facet and her beautiful song (Sam hums it as well as he can remember), the giant trees, phase spiders, the imp, duergar, and the bomb are all mentioned and acted out, using spells (ghost sound and dancing lights) to enhance the acting.

A chance to rest - DM RobC
Wednesday September 5th, 2012 2:58:58 AM

Taggart and Devlin still feel fit and well enough to continue working. They take to the tunnels underneath DrakesMeade in the search for any lingering duergar. In the hundreds of years that the duergar have occupied DrakesMeade they have been relentless in their search for gems and precious materials and have dug wherever they could. The tunnels form a very complex maze, and nearly early route seems to intersect with another. It could take weeks of searching to go through every nook and cranny. There are clearly 3 main tunnels from which an assault could be launched - the same three used by the dwarves and gnomes yesterday. Guards are currently located at each, and groups of gnomes look to be constructing solid doors to seal each tunnel. Many take a break to come and shake your hands. (See Note #1 below)

The dwarf woman on Shinto's lap leans in closer "My name's Sienna, and it will take more than a fancy medal to win me" She takes hold of Shinto's goblet and sculls the rest of his ale, before winking and walking away. The dwarves nearby laugh, and one gives Shinto a friendly punch on the shoulder.

Dernock blushes at the attention he is receiving, and decides the best way to ease the feeling is simply to drink some more.

The young boy's eyes widen in fear as Kyachi steps forward, and he closes his eyes as the eidolon opens her mouth. Is he about to be eaten? Kyachi gives him lick on the face and the boy opens one eye, still alive and breathing. "That tickles!" he giggles, and cautiously reaches out to touch Kyachi on the head, before running back to his amazed group of friends. Sarnak watches on with amusement.

Sam regails the gnomes with the tales of the party, describing each with a well crafted rhyme (Hero Point to Sam for his creative post!). The gnomes lean in at the tense moments, and a few children hold their parents tight as Sam describes the bomb. There are cheers as Sam describes the final battle. When everyone has had a chance to shake the hand of the gnomish hero, Sam is finally able to tear himself away. The gnome wanders the fortress and eventually finds his way to the stables where he enquires about a mount.
The soldier in attendance is surprised by Sam's appearance and seems to alternate between a salute and a handshake - unsure how to greet the gnome "Ah, yes, ah... well.. we have a number of beasts here that may suit you uh... sir?" The soldier walks with Sam down the middle of the stables "We have a number of fine horses and ponies, as well as some previously owned by the duergar. If you would prefer a boar, sir, we have these two" The soldier gestures to a row of pens at the rear of the stable. In one pen are two large boars - one black, one brown. They circle one another before charging each other and butting heads, before resuming their circling again. A scruffy looking hyena in the next pen has propped itself up against the adjoining wall to watch this event and laughs loudly at each clash.

Tahni and Bruagh spend much of the day walking and talking, their feelings for each other seemingly growing now they have finally had some time together. As Bruagh declares that he plans to stay in DrakesMeade for as long as she does, Tahni smiles and starts to lean in to kiss him...

Shonti sits down with Tally the elf and the two talk about the future. "183 lives lost. One sixth our total fighting force. That said there are well over five thousand gnomes and dwarves slowly being transported here from MountainBurrow. But none are combat trained or ready. We need time to consolidate and plan." The elf shakes his head, then stops and smiles "It occurs to me that your party seem to be without a place to call home. Perhaps DrakesMeade could be that home?"(See Note #2 below)

The evening of celebration is almost upon us, and when ready, the party can make their way to the main hall.

OOC:
1. Regarding the sword dropped by Humphrey, it will take a Detect Magic spell + a Spellcraft check to ID it. If one of the mages in the group has the spell prepared you can assume they tried to ID it earlier in the day and they can make a roll now. Alternatively, the catacombs can identify it for you for 100gp.

2. Tally is suggesting that DrakesMeade become a kind of base of operations for the party. Rooms you could furnish, leave equipment, conduct research, etc.

3. Please let Carl and I know when your character sheets are ready & complete. Ideally we want to have all resting, shopping, crafting done this week and to start the next module on Monday.

Sam learns of the hyena's past and tells the story of his own journey.

"How'd you like to join me in my adventure? I need you to carry me in battle so that I can help relay tactics and support to my friends."

Once the hyena agrees, Sam says to the stable keeper,"I need this hyena saddled. Also, if you have a brush that I could have that'd be great as well. I need to get him ready for the party tonight."

Once the hyena is ready, Sam climbs on and begins riding down the halls of DrakesMeade (possibly to the horror of gnome and dwarf alike).

"I think I'll nickname you Chuckles. Do you like the sound of that? By the way, have you ever had dwarven ale?"

OOC: Cast Detect Magic on the sword, d100 is for SF%.. d20's are for Knowledge Arcana, and for Spellcraft checks..

183 Lives Lost.. Gargul be with their souls..

Shonti shakes his head at them mention of all of the lives lost recently..

That's far too many... I pray that all of them are at peace with their ends, early though they might be.. How far is it to MountainBurrow? Their lack of training can be fixed, we have the means to get them ready once they arrive here... We need to secure the entrances to every tunnel, as well as have a watch above ground, for now at least... Get some outposts a good 20' or so high, to be able to see far in every direction. Set traps for anyone that makes it undetected past the watch, and archers to assist the guards to take care of anyone trying to come our way, hopefully that'll turn 'em back.... Whatt'ya say we host a meeting with my party, and those that are higher up in the ranks here about it? It is a serious matter...

At the mention of a new "Home" Shonti is clearly excited to hear Tally bring this up..

As for my home, Shinto and I have been travelling together, alone for a while now.. But, I believe it is time to find a new home, and what a better home than the very place where we helped to extinguish the existence of the DarkBloods? I can't speak for the rest of our group, but as for me, and Shinto, we'll be staying a while I should think.. I'm sure we'll still be travelling from time to time, but it would be nice to have a place to call "Home."

After giving Tally time to respond, Shonti thinks this is a matter that definitely needs to be discussed. However right now there is something many people won't ever experience in their lifetimes about to start.

Oathbreaker 20/15/16 - 41/41 - CMD 20
Wednesday September 5th, 2012 7:07:57 PM

The masked dwarf returns from the failed hunt, even more bitter than before he left. The gnomes did little to lift his spirits, hearing so many people call him by his Dwarven name. "Please. I am just an Oathbreaker," he would say to each one as they excitedly shook his hand. The Oathbreaker makes his way to the target range he was shown before, grabs a quiver of arrows, and proceeds to demonstrate how to annihilate a wooden target with arrows. He barely even notices the other Dwarves staring at him.

Sarnak nods. "Sure, We'll see what I can do."

A chance to rest - DM RobC
Thursday September 6th, 2012 10:10:19 AM

Shinto signals for someone to get him another drink, but looking around he can find no serving staff. It would appear these soldiers have taken it upon themselves to "test" the ale to make sure it is fit for drinking. Filling up their own mugs, Shinto and Dernock talk of the battle they've seen. "Only 9 kills? Why, I must've sent 15 to see Gargul this day!" boasts a dwarf, his arm in a sling. "That's nuffin' I killed 20, and would've killed a whole lot more if I'd remembered to bring me axe wif me!" another chimes in. All is said with good intentions and spirits are jolly.

Shonti has been having a more sombre discussion, however Tally's proposal of making DrakesMeade a permanent home is certainly worth considering. But for now, it is time to celebrate. Shonti and Tally make their way to the main hall which is slowly filling with dwarves and gnomes alike. Rows of meats, barrels of ale, good music - is this dwarven heaven?

Sarnak and Kyachi try to coax the boy and his friends closer, but it would seem the children's bravery is ended for the day as they scamper away quickly.

The hyena cocks its head and looks at Sam "Are you talking to me? Huh, fancy that. I never knew I could speak gnomish" The hyena rolls its eyes as Sam talks about battle and what not, but seems to agree to the proposal given it looks to be the only way out of this stable. The dwarven soldier gives Sam an odd look, but goes to fetch the saddle and brush as requested.
OOC: It's completely up to you on the personality you want for 'Chuckles' so I'll leave his talking to you

Bruagh and Tahni share a tender moment as their lips meet and the troubles of the world fade away. Tahni brushes her hair behind her ear and raises an eyebrow at Bruagh's suggestion of the stables, but smiles with relief when he mentions that he only wishes to look for a mount (no pun intended). They make their way to the stables, and practically bump into a soldier carrying a small saddle "Sir Stormbringer!" the soldier fumbles the saddle, dropping it to the ground and salutes Bruagh "I was just fetching this saddle for the gnome. I'm not sure he is feeling very well. I think he believes himself able to ride a hyena. Please look around and let me know which animal pleases you and I will take care of any necessary paperwork for you, sir" with that, the soldier nods to Bruagh and hurries away to Sam and "Chuckles".

Horses and ponies seem to be in abundance. Tahni can't help but admire a white pony in particular. Could it be? Starbright? The cleric takes a moment to stroke the head of her pony and pat him down.

Bruagh, meanwhile, can hear a ruckus coming from one of the side pens. Looking in the cause is obvious. A large brown bear has been chained to the floor. What coat it has is matted and patchy, and blood spills from its paws. It is tied in place by chains across its back though that does not seem to have made the bear any more docile. Two dwarves are backing away from the beast "Might have to put her out of her misery" one says to the other. The bear tries to thrash its way lose from the chains, and manages to pull one of the three chains holding it lose from the ground. The two dwarves pull out handaxes and look at each other to see who will act first. The bear groans and seems to be making progress on freeing itself.

The Oathbreaker takes his frustrations out on straw targets. The other dwarves in training all stop to watch the display, as arrows strike the targets with accuracy and impressive power. You notice some trying to mirror your stance and grip with the bow in the hopes of improving their own skills. OOC: Going forwards would you prefer to be known as Oathbreaker or Taggart?

Devlin meanwhile assists with training some recruits with hand-to-hand combat. Against axe the recruits seem quite well versed, but when Devlin wields his shortsword and dagger, his attacks are quicker and more difficult for them to predict - different from the weapons the duergar typically use.

Bruagh looks back to Tahni. "Stay here." He then puts a hand on each of the soldiers shoulders. Stand down men... I'll handle this."

Even in the sad pathetic shape this creature is in, Bruagh sees it strength, power, and its will to live. "You are a fighter aren't you." The Paladin lays his axe on the ground and pulls out the bit of red cloth he used another bear when he and his friends were forced to hole up in a cave. He grabs a bucket from the ground with some water in it and slowly approaches the bear.

"Easy girl, its ok, I'm hear to help. I won't let anyone hurt you." The Paladin looks at the wounds the creature has received and figures someone wanted to force this creature to be their mounts. "Sounds like something Humphrey would do..."

Bruagh cautiously approaches the bear and places a hand on its side, letting wave of healing wash over it. He pets it a time or two and lets another wave wash over her. And another, and another. Once he has exhausted all of his healing and she is more comfortable, he takes the red cloth, dips it in the water, and begins washing the blood, dirt, and grim from what is left of her coat. He offers her another bucket of water to drink from. All the while he continues to soothe the bear and clean and comfort.

Once it is obvious she is not longer a threat, he will ask [b]Tahni
to come forward and do any more healing the bear may need.

"See! That's why I named you chuckles!"

(Chuckles) "Amusing... So when are we getting this ale you were talking about?"

Devlin trains with the new recruits for a while longer, he makes them work hard throwing a few jibes and taunts at them to keep them off guard. The practice begins to get intense and Devlin finds himself lost in the moment. His anger at the past events begins to roll forth, the emotions he had suppressed for so long finally unleashed. He weaves among the warriors his practice weapons striking exposed areas with more force than needed. A dark look crosses his face and a few of his opponents back off involuntarily, unwilling to face the rogue. Devlin snarls at the fools who give ground and advance on them opening his back to a strike. A warrior steps in to to strike but expecting it Devlin spins and delivers a devastating double strike to the youth dropping him senseless. The sight of fresh blood and the cries of alarm from the others bring the lithe dwarf to his senses. He looks around the room at the many wounded and battered Dwarves, most look at him in awe but some look on in confusion or anger. Sorry, I lost me head for a moment. Is all he can say before he retreats to his room. He remains there until the party and makes his way there.

Bruagh does his best to calm the bear down. His approach only seems to make the bear struggle further. Its manages to burst another chain, and finally the last. The brown bear rears itself up and paws at the air with its bloodied paws. Bruagh can see the reason for the blood - someone has either cut or torn the bears claws out. Bruagh is patient with the bear, making no threatening moves and speaking in as calm a manner as possible. It takes a while, but he is eventually able to get close enough to reach out and touch the bear. The paladin calls on Domi's blessing and channels his healing to the bear. This has a relaxing effort on the animal, as it rolls onto its side on the stony floor. It is tired and hurt, and as much as its spirit wants to fight, the bears body is just too weak. Bruagh gets no further resistance from the bear as he tends to its wounds and cleans its fur as gently as he can. When anyone other than Bruagh approaches - even Tahni - the bear growls and shows its few remaining teeth. "I have some patients of my own to tend to" Tahni whispers "I'll see you at the party"

Sam and Chuckles quickly start to bond. A gnome in a party of dwarves with a hyena from a stable of horses. Perhaps the two have something in common? Arriving at the main hall, Sam and Chuckles are stopped by several soldiers. "Sorry Sir, but I'm afraid animals are not permitted in the hall. Please take no offence, however with women and children present we cannot afford the risk" one says almost apologetically "And besides, you bring a hyena and someone else will want to bring a tiger, then someone else brings an elephant and it just goes on" another adds.

Shonti and Tally arrive, and Shonti quickly finds his brother in a corner with a group of soldiers. By the smell of them it is possible they have been here all day, although with Shinto's hygiene it is difficult to be certain.

Dernock looks about for food. The celebrations must be getting started, as the smell of roasting meat wafts your way. The maiden on Dernock's lap grabs a leg of mutton from a nearby server. She bites into one side of the leg, and then holds it out to Dernock's mouth for the fighter to take a bite from "Is this what you be wantin' sweety?" she asks with a wink.

After the sparring session, Devlin takes some time alone to reflect on his actions. Perhaps it is just the recent battles still in his system? That must be it. The dark blood within him cannot control his actions, can it? He spends the rest of the morning disecting each of his actions in detail looking for an answer. When none can be found he makes his way to the main hall. It takes a moment, but he finds the others starting to gather in the corner. (OOC: I didn't realise it was a NZ slogan too)

Oathbreaker too seems to have found his way to the main hall. He stands just inside the doorway scanning the room. There is a lot of activity - music, drunken dancing, general party madness. Hundreds of gnomes and dwarves altogether in the same room.

Sarnak and Kyachi retreat to their room to consider the eidolon's form. Something combat functional, intimidating to enemies, yet perhaps not as intimidating to small bands of children. This may be trickier than first thought, but at least a second bed won't be required for the eidolon.

The Paladin then makes his way back to his quarters and gets cleaned up for the party, making his way there and finding Tahni.

Upon reaching their room, Sarnak and Kyachi disappear within. About a hour later, Sarnak comes back out with a creature by his side that looks wholly unlike the creature that went in.

Covered in long white fur, with two sets of feathered wings and a blue mane, hopefully she's far less intimidating to the world at large, the rune on her and Sarnak's forehead the only indication that she's the same creature as before.

She looks out at the world for a moment, before spreading her wings and leaping a couple feet into the air in a backflip before landing back where she started, "Mmm, I could get used to these, I have a whole new dimension to play in now." She looks back to Sarnak, tilting her head to the side as she speaks. "Now, didn't we have a party to attend? This is going to be fun seeing if anyone can tell I'm the same person in a different shell."
He nods. "Yup, let's head off."

OOC: Kyachi now looks like this, with changes of the hair is light blue instead of orange and it goes all the way down her neck, back, and tail, with the tail having a puff of fur that hides a small series of barbs. The barbs are normally limp and cause no damage, but she may make them stiff to use as a weapon. The large fore and hind claws are still retractable, and when not in a combat situation usually are retracted.

DM Carl: Now that's darn right adorable.

"Sorry, but rules are rules" the guard stands firm when speaking with Sam.

Sarnak and the new looking Kyachi have the same difficulty. As Kyachi speaks aloud - and in common - the guards bunch closer together, one even placing his hand on the handle of his axe. The guard in charge continues to address Sarnak "As smart as your, er, companion may seem, its presence may make others uncomfortable. I'm sorry but we cannot allow it to enter" This is said with a very calm and patient tone and - perhaps surprisingly for a dwarf in a position of power - without any sort of condescension.

Sam accepts the guards view of things, and returns Chuckles to his room before making a dash back to the main hall. What kind of bard would miss a chance with such a large audience?

Shinto does his clan proud with his drunken rendition of "Fight to Live". His tune may be hard on the ears, but his mug is even harder on the head of the gnome sitting next to him as Shinto delivers an accidental backhand as part of his finale. The equally drunk gnome gives a hearty shove to Shinto's chest and responds with something along the lines of "Yawonna pea sammy y'offkey nuffty?", before he is escorted away by some other less intoxicated, but well-meaning gnomes.

Shinto turns to see that his brother now occupies his seat. Shonti is greeted with the same backslaps and friendly punches that Shinto was - though they may feel slightly harder to the wizard than the fighter. The brothers needn't look far for food as a freshly roasted pheasant (surrounded by roast potatoes) is placed unceremoniously on the table.

Dernock meanwhile looks to be getting the silver-service. As he reaches to take a bite of the mutton leg held before him, it is quickly moved aside and replaced by the young lady's lips and tongue. Once the laughter of the soldiers subsides, she smiles and gives Dernock the mutton leg, as she reaches instead for more ale. To think he nearly passed-on and missed this?

Devlin takes a seat at a table and sits unassumedly, happy to have a friendly chat with the people nearby. A number approach him with mugs of ale, each wanting to make a toast to a real, live hero.

Oathbreaker continues his quieter celebrations. Though uncomfortable with the attention and surroundings, it does allow him to observe how different people interact and not attending may have drawn more attention.

After tending to the bear, Bruagh makes his way to the function but try as he might he cannot see Tahni anywhere. With so many in attendance, finding anyone in particular could be challenging. The raucous laughter coming from one corner seems worthy of a closer look, and Bruagh soon finds that is where the party seem to be gathering. It isn't long before Bruagh feels an arm drape over his shoulder. Tahni stands beside him in a flowing, white dress. Her gold necklace (with Alemi's seal) hangs loosely around her neck "How good to see you again Sir Paladin" she says coyly

Lets trade stories about the past and see who's is worse, your broken oath or my broken family. Devlin tries to add a smile at the end but finds it hard with Taggert's hidden face.

The masked dwarf pauses as Devlin talks to him. He takes a long drink from his goblet, not the first, and manages, "My past... I am unsure I can speak of that." Oathbreaker glances around at the crowded hall. "Most definitely not here. Just know this, Devlin. I... that was not my first venture into Gargul's domain." The masked dwarf backs up a few steps, looking around in panic. "No, I cannot. I am sorry, I must go." Oathbreaker quickly retreats out of the hall, heading back to his room.

A chance to rest - DM RobC

Summoners are rare in dwarven communities, and it would seem their acceptance is still questionable. The soldiers say no more as Sarnak and Kyachi walk away, back to their room joking along the way. Once back at their room, Sarnak opens to the door to discover a piece of parchment had been slipped under it. On it is a childlike charcoal drawing of what you believe to be Kyachi and a group children playing together. In the top corner in dwarven reads "Westlin - age 7". Perhaps the next generation could teach their elders more about accepting those who are different?

"Gentlemen!" BlackAxe arrives with a few dark bottles in hand. The soldiers that had been casually relaxing rush to get to their feet and salute the general. BlackAxe grins as the soldiers drunkenly try to maintain their balance "Alright, off with you lot. I think I saw another few barrels yet to be opened by the northern stairs" The soldiers - and the lass who had been comfortable on Dernock's lap - visibly relax and quickly excuse themselves.

"Now then, I thought this might be more fitting for the occasion" BlackAxe places the bottles he had been carrying on the table. Though the labels of the bottles are old, they unmistakably contain Lost Halls Porter. Pulling the corks from the bottles one by one, BlackAxe gestures to Sam,Devlin and Oathbreaker to join him and the party. He proceeds to pour some of the black beer into the cups of each person, and when done, he holds what remains in the bottle aloft. "When I was young, my father taught me three things. Never accept a gift from an elf, never trust gold that glitters in darkness, and NEVER forget a grudge. There's still plenty more duergar roaming these lands, and I intend to roust every last one of 'em. To RedForge! he toasts, and drinks from the bottle.

Oathbreaker remains alert, but no real signs of danger can be found. The odd drunken scuffle or two, but nothing at all serious.

As the night draws on, Tahni excuses herself from the group but not before leaving Bruagh with a long, lingering kiss. "I'll see you tomorrow" she says quietly, before raising her voice to speak to the rest of the group "and I have some Alchemists Kindness in the infirmary if anyone needs it tomorrow. Goodnight boys" she walks away and looks back over her shoulder at the group as she exits the room.
