Scene 1 - Getting there is half the fun!

DM Carl gets this shindig on the road.
Tuesday September 11th, 2012 8:49:10 AM

Dawn never really breaks underground. Coupled with last nights festivities, DrakesMeade is in no hurry to get moving the next day.

More than one dwarf is seen shuffling to the infirmary to take Tahni up on her offer and rumors abound about how the revelry drained the newly liberated city of it's booze supply. Still, the spirits of the population soars after their victory over the duergar. The very real concerns everyone still faces seem just a bit easier to handle today.

Of course, Tally can always be counted on to bring folks back to reality. Shonti is the first to wake as the elf's bony fingers prod him into consciousness. "Time to wake, master dwarf. I'm afraid Tahni and I have discovered something...unsettling." The elf sits on the edge of the bed, obviously uncomfortable in housing not designed for persons of his stature. "I know we were hoping to have a few days to recover, but we can't just sit on what we found. Come see us in the infirmary when you wake the rest of your companions." He looks over to where Dernock and Shinto snore loudly & sleep off what was obviously one heck of a party. "I didn't dare wake them myself. I plan on making it through this life in one piece."

With that, Tally excuses himself. He ducks his head as he maneuvers through the doorway and out of sight. Outside, sounds of industry begin to fill the halls as the new occupants do their best to clean the taint left behind after years of being in the hands of the duergar.

***

Good to be back folks. If there's still any pending catacombs/character surgery transactions going on, go ahead & get them wrapped up. Things are about to get moving pretty quickly.

Been waiting on Shonti, says hell post later tonight, cant wait myself

Once awaken Shinto sits up holding is head in both hands with his eyes crossed from the pain, murmuring already, less t'em Duergars is back er the keeps on fire I says it cen wait till noon ey? The hungover warrior falls back to his bed. Whether for laughs or urgency, Shinto didnt know, but Shonti shoved his brother out the bed an onto the stone floor. A loud thump and three dwarven curses later, Shinto is clad in his armor and the Frozen Soul slung over his shoulder. His new medal and headband complete his attire. As he gets to the rest of the group shintos head hax started to clear up, and his thoughts unclouded, SOo, whats te big deal? Wakin us up affer half a nights sleep followin me druken stupor? Its big news right?

Shinto is a bit grumpy, but still alert and ready to serve Drakesmead.

As Sarnak and Kyachi enter the room and spot the drawing, they look to each other for a moment and smile. "Well, that's a bright point. On that, let's go to bed shall we?"
Kyach nods and waits to be desummoned quickly, and Sarnak drops into bed, to wake several hours later to begin his morning rituals and get ready for the next day, as he waves at shinto as he comes in, Kyachi next to him once again. "So what brings you around this early? I would've thought all of you would still be asleep from the party"

OOC: I'm going on a assumption that since Sarnak didn't attend the party he would be sleeping in a different room from the rest of the group.

Devlin is up early and runs through a few agility routines before taking to the sparring ring. Few dare to approach him for a fight but he is able to get a couple matches in. The brand new twin blades are perfectly matched. His hands are quick and the blades quicker. When he spies a messenger waiting in the corner Devlin excuses himself from the ring. He nods to the messenger gathers his things and heads towards the infirmary. He nods to those inside before saying. Whats the problem?

Shonti AC15/14/11 - CMD14 - HP44/44
Tuesday September 11th, 2012 10:09:04 PM

After being awoken by Tally, Shonti jumps out of bed as quickly as he can, goes straight to the others and begins pushing, tapping, poking, prodding, shoving, or slapping all of his sleeping companions. Wake up!! Tally says there's some bad news folks, let's get up and get movin' lads. We lost enough time drinkin' las' night, time to get back to work!

Seeing Shinto lay back down in his bed after being woken up first, Shonti returns to his bed after waking all of the otehrs, and shoves him particularly hard onto the floor. No time for messin' around brother! Get up, shake off the headache, an let's go!

As everyone is getting up, Shonti dons his armor and slings his Handy Haversack over his shoulder. Yelling to the group behind him, Come on lads, to the infirmary! Shonti walks out the door and heads to the infirmary. As soon as he's there, he finds Tally, and asks the Elf, What's going on? I got here as quick as I could wake the others.

Sam climbs out of bed, feeling like Dernock looked a few days ago. He gets himself ready for the day and wakes Chuckles.

"Come on buddy. Let's find the others."

Sam eventually meets up with the group.

Posting for Dernock "In the hospital, but nothing serious."- Dernock wakes and casually strolls down the hall. Murmurs of new evil developments find his ears during his walk. He arrives to find his brothers looking worse than he did a few days ago.

The party wakes, some in better shape than others. Dispatches are sent that their presence is needed in the infirmary and one by one our heroes make their way there.

Days after the battle, the infirmary still houses several patients. The supply of divine magic not being enough to heal everyone, Tahni makes do with her more mundane healing skills and saves the magical for those who need it most. It is a testament to her skill and compassion that none of those holed up here seem to be in any serious pain. Though busy, she is the picture of competence and calm. She takes a moment to smile coyly at Bruagh and motion to where Tally sits.

Her eyes look to the elf and fall upon a book he holds. A worried look crosses her face before she turns to look back at the paladin, quiet desperation plainly visible. The book itself is unremarkable save for the splash of what is likely blood across the cover. It has obviously seen better days. Once everyone arrives, he opens it and thumbs through the pages to find what he's looking for.

"We recovered this from a separate prison the duergar kept...if you can call it that. There was only a single cell and it looked newly constructed." His face grimaces as he finds what he was looking for and stops flipping. "How many of you remember what happened to Tina," he asks.

For those who weren't around, he tells the story. "She's friend to Tahni and myself, as well as some of you, of course. She survived what happened at Riddleport, but one of the necromancers there...stole her unborn child." He pauses briefly; this is obviously something he does not enjoy discussing. Tahni comes from behind the party, wrapping her arm around Bruagh's as she does.

She continues, "her child was taken from the womb. Please don't ask me to go into details about how. Know that she survived the ordeal, but hasn't really recovered. The necromancer responsible was killed, we made darn sure of that, but his companions stole away with the child." She takes a deep breath. "The child came out black as pitch with red eyes. I don't know why. Tally, show them what you found."

The elf places the open book on the table and turns it to face the party. "It's a log book from the prison. The guards assigned to that cell we found kept meticulous notes in it. The only captive in it was a dwarven child with black skin and red eyes...we think it's Tina's."

Full disclosure: I wasn't present when Tina's child was stolen, so I apologize if I missed any minor detail...

Having not partaken in the Lost Halls Porter, the masked dwarf woke up early and dragged himself down to the archery pitch to practice. He empties another quiver and makes his way back just as Shonti is waking the others. He makes his way along silently behind the group, keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Or as ordinary as Dreaksmeade gets.

Behind his mask, the dwarf has a look of disgust upon his face. He remains quiet, trying to keep down what wine he drank last night while the elf tells his tale.

Dernock grits his teeth as the event is described. He wonders when the Scab will be rid of such evil. He knows that he will not rest until either that day comes or he dies trying (again).

-----------

Sam listens to the story of the child and has a different reaction than most others would. He can't help but to have pity for him. The child's external description reminds him of his own demonic visions.

"Maybe this child's origin closely resembles mine."

So all we know is the duregar had the child. Weve no clue as to where theyve takin it, or when. Or even WHY theyd want the child in the first place?

Shinto findz a chair, or something to sit on. Looking to the rest of the group, and finally his brother. Unnatural at its worse, ey bro?

That's about the jist of it. The Necromancer had the demon-child and jumped off the second floor of the building we were fightin' in. By the time we could check the area all we could find was the necromancers body and burnt footprints headed towards the mountains. Devlin visibly shudders as he recalls the image. I don't remember a lot from Riddleport but that image......I don't think it will ever be gone.

Sarnak and Kyachi nod at being sent to the infirmary, and upon hearing the situation Sarnak grimaces at hearing the situation, While Kyachi backwings for a moment in reaction, going back several feet, surprise on her muzzle as she seems to be unable to contemplate what was just said. "But, why? What could a unborn child possibly offer to a necromancer?"

Sarnak looks to her for a moment, then back to the group. "As Kyachi asked, what was the goal here? I don't think that just because someone is evil they loose rationality. There has to be some reason he corrupted the child instead of outright killing, especially since he could have just raised the child after it died."

OOC: Keep in mind Kyachi looks radically different to how she used to, it should at least evoke some reaction that he seems to be talking to a completely new creature as if it's the same one he's always known, at least for those who IC don't know how a summoner works.

Bruagh shakes his head thinking back to the demonic child, the Indigo Brotherhood, and the Pirates of the Weeping Rose. Between them, the darkbloods, the orcs, the undead, the giants, the lizard people, and the demons that been harrying them for the past few... months... had it really been months? It was a wonder they hadn't died several times over. Well, some of them had actually. "I'll never forget the scream that child unleashed as it exited the womb."

As Sarnak enters the room, Shonti asks him Is this Kyachi? She looks.......... Different haha! Amazing how such beautiful monsters can change forms like a shapeshifter every so often isn't it? I've heard of this before, but never actually got the chance to see it for myself.. Shonti looks Kyachi over, very interested in her new form. Are you enjoying your new wings? Shonti asks Kyachi.

Once everyone has made it to the infirmary, Shonti listens to Tally explain about the Duergar prison, and about Tina's lost child with great displeasure obvious on his face, utterly disgusted to say the least. He begins getting noticably angrier at every passing thought of the unborn child being ripped from his mothers womb..

What kinda sick bastard was this necromancer anyways?! Shonti exclaims to the group before nodding to his brother, Shinto. Of course it ain't natural! Gargul gave this child life, and this monstrosity took it, and turned it all wicked with his devilish magic.. Poor lad, never had a fighting chance......

Kyachi grins upon seeing someone interested in her new form, but growls slightly at the term 'monster' "I prefer Creature instead of monster personally." ]/b]At the talk of her wings, she giggles for a moment before moving a couple feet off to shonti's side and quickly flying in a tight curve around the dwarf, landing on her opposite side, before performing a wing-assisted backflip over shonti, landing behind her, her wings not having touched any part of shonti but the wind would have been felt, as she laughs and turns to look back at her. [b]"Oh yes, I've been waiting since Sarnak first called me for him to gain enough power to manifest my wings. It's terribly dull to be stuck on the ground when for nearly my entire life i've been flying."

OOC: On the Fly checks for Kyachi, she has a +14 mod, and I just assumed she could take 10 given she's not in combat or in a strenuous situation, so with taking 10 can beat a DC of 24

I need about 4 days for the wands I want to make, and 13 days for the gear (8 if shonti helps), will we have that time to craft or none really? I do know Shonti has the feat, but being able to spread out the work probably helps.

Tally waits a moment for our heroes to calm and process what he's telling them. "Abject horror is the correct response to this. We've never known why the necromancers did this or what happened to the child, but this book gives us some answers." He turns the book back towards himself and starts reading, his delicate fingers guiding his pace as he tries his best to touch it as little as possible.

"Got put on baby-sitting duty today. That blasted imp went and told his master that we'd captured the black dwarven child and now we have to keep it safe until those dark elf necros get here to take him..."

Tally stops reading and starts flipping a few pages. "A lot of this is just the duergar complaining. Supposedly the child they captured looked to be 10-15 years old, but could barely speak and spent a lot of time crying. Ah...here's what I'm looking for." The elf clears his throat before continuing, "Can't see much from here, I hear fighting & lots of it. I ain't about to sit here playing nursemaid to this brat if there are heads to smash." The elf closes the book and looks up. "That's the last entry. We likely disposed of his corpse with the rest of the duergar. The cage itself looks like it was torn open from the inside, you can check it out yourselves if you'd like. No one was supposed to touch it, but some of us got a little crazy last night, so who's to know..."

Tahni steps forth. "Tally, tell them..." The elf sighs in response and continues. "There may be some mention in here of the necromancers arriving via the remains of the lava tubes of Thekk. Scouts have already located the egress they were likely speaking of and I suppose it's possible that it could spit a group of foolish adventurers out in what may be close proximity to wherever it is these necromancers were coming from. Tahni here thinks this needs to be followed up on, I'm of the opinion that we need all the help we can muster here."

"We can't let this injustice stand,"
Tahni responds, showing a rare moment of anger. She turns to everyone else. "This isn't just about finding Tina's son. These necromancers may pose just a great a threat if not more to us than the remains of the duergar. I...I don't want any of you to leave so soon after we won the day." Her voice cracks as she says this. She seems to intentionally avoiding looking at Bruagh. She continues after regaining her composure. "We just can't sit on this and plan to look into it some day."

Sam listens to the account of the child and wonders what will come of him.

"Maybe the imp is still here. He might be able to give us some insight."

Sam quickly stands up and climbs on to Chuckles.

"I'm...going to go for a ride to think things out. I'll catch up with you all in a bit."

Sam rides the winding halls of DrakesMeade. He heads for the area from which he and his friends entered and attacked.

Once there, Sam quietly calls out in Abyssal,"Show yourself imp...if you are still here, that is."

He continues up and down the passage until he either finds the imp, or has a good idea that he is no longer there.

-----------------------------------------
Dernock listens intently as the Tally reads the duergar's log book.

(in a dwarven accent) "The bars were forced open from the inside? How could a child be able to do such a thing? Maybe he had help."

He hopes that maybe something magically teleported into the cell to help the child escape. The alternative is much more terrifying (even for a dwarf as tough as himself).

Ever the heroes, the party snaps into action.

Sam heads off in search of the imp Tally mentioned. If the demon is around, however, it's not feeling very chatty. The only thing Sam gets in reply are some odd looks and a dwarven matron guiding her children away from the gnome.

The rest of the party makes its way to the holding cell. Sarnak quickly excuses himself to get crafting, stating the need to prepare if they're going out in the world again soon. Shinto, Devlin, and Oathbreaker all fail to notice him leave as they are instantly tuned into the scene before them. The cell itself is unremarkable: a crude set of iron bars with a simple, but sturdy lock on the door. Tally's explanation of having been forced open from the inside is correct, but perhaps a little hyperbolic. The lock is certainly damaged, but the cell door swings freely and the whole thing is still structurally sound.

The area inside the cell is devoid of any kind of furniture. It is a free-standing structure & not attached to anything; the floor is made from iron bars just like the walls and ceiling of the thing.

Oathbreaker spies patterns in the dust. Whoever stayed here was likely extraordinarily uncomfortable. It looks like they slept in the same corner, but there are signs of troubled sleep. Smeared footprints show that it's occupant was constantly slipping on the uneven footing. A few days of these conditions would break just about anyone.

Shinto smells something. Is that brimstone? Yes, yes it is brimstone. This is the Scab, so that's not uncommon. Still, the smell does seem to be coming from that cage. Inspection shows no sulfur spring nearby; it must just be lingering in the air.

Devlin inspects the lock. No finesse was used opening it. It simply looks as if something hit it hard enough to break it apart. With the possible exception of an enhanced Kyachi, none of you could likely do this without tools. The breakage does indeed show the force came from inside the cage, however.

The rest of the party finds little to add. Shonti can't be sure, but he thinks what they're looking at is a cage (ooc: Sorry, couldn't resist after all those nat 20s).

Not quite as wrapped up, Dernock notices they have a guest. A large, battle-scarred dwarf stands watching with obvious interest. He looks familiar...was he helping Tahni heal casualties back at the infirmary? Maybe he was...

He points at the corner where it slept. "It barely moved from that spot. When it did, it had trouble moving. It can still barely walk. This... child, this demon, whatever it may be, it must be terrified."

DM Carl: Maybe I wasn't clear. The occupant had trouble walking and sleeping because the bars were on the floor as well. There are signs he regularly slipped on or tripped over them.

Sarnak nods at Shonti's comment. "Indeed, I'm going to go off as well and get working. Me and Kyachi are a hammer when you need a feather's touch here. "

Kyachi then looks over the group for a moment. "Also, he got access to a new spell that allows him to temporarily break the link that forces me to stay near him, so if you need my particular form of help but don't need Sarnak or he's busy, just ask me. As long as it takes less than a hour I can help, and we can both relay information to each other while I'm out regardless."

They both then begin heading off to their rooms to work on the various items, Kyachi keeping a ear perked for if any of them still needed her present.

The trail is at least a day old, and if they were running they have a day on us. There's little chance that they're still going to be down here, and I'm no tracker. I hate to leave Kyachi like this but the fact is that it's entirely likely that we'll keep finding new information and I never get the chance to finish these items if I don't aggressively find time to work on them. Having inspected the cage very thoroughly, our heroes make their plan of attack.

Shonti and Sarnak both decide they need to get cracking on their crafting if they're going to have the items they may require before the party heads out into Domi-knows-what. Kyachi is able to stay with the rest of the group thanks to Sarnak's newfound magic.

Devlin and Oathbreaker find what's left of a trail from the occupant of this cage. He or she likely escaped during the battle for DrakesMeade, so the trail is several days old. Good thing Oathbreaker knows what he's doing. There are no signs of anybody else assisting in breaking open the cage. The two are able to follow the footprints for several yards before they are wiped away by those left behind from several days worth of traffic and one rather large battle. If the occupant continued in the direction he or she was last headed, then the path would eventually lead to a tunnel leading deeper into The Scab.

The rest of the party discusses the wisdom of taking time to craft when the path is still hot. A newcomer is greeted, perhaps with hopes of assistance? Meanwhile, a thought weighs heavily on the mind...the idea that there's a promise that has yet to be kept. Is that it? Maybe...could just be paranoia.

(Short post today, folks. Internet was down at work this morning and I'm just slammed today.)

Shonti and Sarnak head off to finish up what will hopefully be some hasty crafting while the rest of the party gathers their belongings to see if they can't find a trail once outside of DrakesMeade. When they arrive to get their gear, some find packages waiting for them - seems the Catacombs is delivering to DrakesMeade once again. Properly geared, those scouting ahead meet at the entrance to the tunnel the cage's occupant likely took out of town.

Tally sits arguing with Tahni in the infirmary when Bruagh arrives to say good-bye. A look of sadness and understanding crosses her face when he tells her he's leaving. She most assuredly wants him to stay, but he wouldn't be the man she cares for if he did. She says little and just tried to enjoy what she hopes isn't their last moment.

Tally has no qualms about butting in, however. "So, you're going through with this, are you? Well be safe. There are things in The Scab that make duergar look like kittens." The elf pulls out a scroll tube and unrolls a rough map. "This should get you to the lava tubes if you're wanting to travel along them. Fascinating things, have you ever used them? The magic that makes them possible is ancient; even we elves don't fully understand it yet. There's some kind of...reverse gravity that keeps you anchored in the middle of the tube and propelled along them. I can't imagine I'd enjoy that kind of trip, but you rough and tumble folks just might.

"You should know that no one has scouted what lies beyond. The lava tubes used to traverse the entire Scab, but they've become broken and disconnected with all the tectonic activity in this area. I suppose it's possible they empty out into a pit of magma, but don't let that stop you from throwing yourself into them..." With that, Tally hands over the map. As Bruagh's hand accepts it, Tally holds on a moment longer. He looks Bruagh square in the eyes before whispering, "be careful, master Stormbringer. My black-sheep cousins are not to be trifled with."

The rest of the party gathers their equipment or gets to work crafting. When all is said and done, 6 dwarves, a gnome riding a hyena, an armored bear, and a furry winged eidolon venture into the darkness.

Thursday September 20th, 2012 8:54:14 AM

While the crafters continue their work, the rest of the party is hot on the trail of the cage's former occupant.

The trail is almost cold, but Oathbreaker, Devlin, and Sam are able to follow. Whomever was in that cage has an odd gait; had they walked like a normal dwarf, the trail would be impossible to pick up, let alone follow. Checking the map, Bruagh is able to conclude that wherever this person went, they didn't head towards the lava tubes (or if they did, by a very indirect route).

Devlin turns his tracking skills to auto-pilot and ponders what he's heard about those lava tubes. Their mundane names do little to suggest what they actually are. They used to be a mode of high-speed transportation through the Scab. He's wholly ignorant of the magic involved in their creation, but has heard stories of people floating through them at impossibly high speeds and arriving safely on the other side hundereds of miles away. He's pretty sure they don't run the length of the Scab like they used to; they've been broken up by earthquakes and what not.

Dernock isn't able to remember much about the drow in the area, other than the major stories. Supposedly thousands of them called the Scab home many years ago, but they were massacred during the Year of Ascension. According to stories, the tunnels they were massing in were collapsed by adventurers just before they attacked the surface. The relative slow breeding and lack of cooperation between Drow mean that their numbers have yet to recover. Still, they're not unknown in these parts. If they have a permanent home, Dernock's not aware of it.

After a solid 45 minutes of tracking, the trail leads into a fissure in the tunnel walls. It's a tight fit. The dwarves in the party have no chance of squeezing in there. Sam may be able to, but there's a real danger of him becoming stuck. The stone around the fissure is hot. Not blisteringly hot, but certainly hotter than the areas around it. This is not an uncommon phenomenon in The Scab; there's obviously some kind of geothermal activity going on beyond where the fissue leads.

"I want to check this out. I'll take my pack off and then tie a rope around my waist that one of you will hold. After that, I'll cast 'grease' on myself to help shimmy through the tight spots. If things get ugly, I'll tug on the rope and you guys just pull me out. If not, we head back."

Sam waits for approval or lack thereof from his brothers.

Aye lad it would be worth a look but be careful. Devlin looks around for a good anchor point to tie the rope off to. He than looks in the fissure and feels the heat coming from it. Anyone have a spell that can protect Sam from the heat? It might get hot quick in there.

Once the rope is tied off Devlin dusts his hands off and looks around the tunnel. I know were not far from the fortress but lets still be cautious. Tag can you cover the fissure? If anything comes after Sam your best equipped ta help him. Bruagh, Dernock, Shinto your on rope detail. He tugs on it you pull for yer life. New guy help however ya can. I will scout down the tunnel a bit ta give us an advanced warning if anything comes from that direction. Kayatchi if ye hear me shout or sounds of a fight be ready ta help me out.

Crafters gonna craft...

Sam greases himself up, securely ties a rope to himself, and shimmies into the fissure. The rest of the party prepare to haul him out should the need arise or stand ready in case of ambush.

Immediately the gnome notices that it's hot in here - really hot. It's bearable at first, but soon the stone is hot enough to burn any exposed skin resting against it. His head turned into the fissure to see what lies beyond, he sees it extend out a few more feet before it angles off into the unknown. The curiosity to see what's out there must be great, but the heat from inside the fissure starts to scorch the poor gnome. Quickly Sam realizes he's in real danger and that he won't be able to handle going further inside. With a call to his companions, the gnome is yanked from the fissure.

Sam needs to make a DC15 fort save or takes 3 points of non-lethal damage and is fatigued until that damage is healed. I took liberty with your character per your instructions up there (which I appreciate, btw).

Chuckles sprints to his "fallen" master and pods him by tugging at his arm. Sam rolls over, pushes him away, and gets up.

"Well...It's really hot in there! I never saw anything further than the actual fissure itself. It angled off. If I went past that point, I think you'd be pulling back a rope that was on fire and not much more. So this means that the child is able to withstand the heat, the fissure happened after he passed through (DM's...), or he teleported from this point."

Once getting himself back together, Sam climbs on to Chuckles, and is ready to head back.

If you don't have time to read the entire Scab page in the Woldipedia, at least read this before you post again. Thank you. Now, on with the game...)

Having decided that cooking Sam is no way to move forward with the investigation, the party explores other options. Braugh checks the map Tally provided, but finds it only contains landmarks between DrakesMeade and the lava tubes. Their current location isn't even on the map.

Scouting the surrounding area shows no tunnels that will lead to whatever this fissure does. It appears the party has indeed hit a dead-end with regards to wherever the cage's occupant was headed. The trip back to DrakesMeade is peppered with talk about the possibly inherent evil the creature possesses.

Kyachi makes it back to Sarnak before his spells wears off & the crafters are filled in on what's happened. It has been roughly three hours since the party went scouting.

There are still the lava tubes to check out, but who knows where they lead. The group can't be certain Kyachi won't be unsummoned by the time they arrive at the end of them.

In the meantime, supplies are gathered and belongings packed for what could be an extended trip. When all is said and done, our heroes gather once again at the egress from DrakesMeade.

Bruagh's map makes finding the tube a simple matter. One last turn and there it is; a tunnel leading deeper into The Scab. It's roughly 20' wide and surprisingly smooth, though some sort of small, pointy stalactites can be seen hanging from the ceiling. Our heroes have seen enough magical webs in their days to know one when they see it, and a rather large one stretches from floor to ceiling about 20' outside the tube's mouth. Judging by the debris in it, it has been here for some time.

(OOC: So long as nobody says otherwise, I'm going to assume the crafting got completed. Shonti, please let me know again how long you spent crafting.)

Oathbreaker, ever the astute observer, notes the flow of dust from the tunnel and its direction shift as they approach. He tosses a stone into the tube and watches as it quickly corrects course once inside. The stone moves to the center & wobbles for just a moment as it stabilizes. Almost immediately it begins moving along the tube; it moves slowly at first, but picks up speed and clips along at what would be a brisk jog for your average dwarf. It is soon out of sight. The party should be pleased to know the stone stayed in the center of the tube while it was in sight. It did not ricochet off the walls when it turned.

Shinto looks around for some sort of controls, but sees nothing. The webbing is the same kind of magical webbing that caused so much trouble back at the DrakesMeade barracks. It's a good distance from the egress of the tube; if it's intended to catch those exiting it, they'd have to be going pretty fast to cross the distance without crashing into the ground first.

Terser shakes his head at the sad state before him. Self-enforced prohibition? Surely these dwarves need his influence. It's a good thing they found him...

Bruagh, with his knowledge of digging underground, assures the rest of the party the tubes themselves won't have any lava flow. Of course, that doesn't mean they don't lead to great danger. They're still discussing the wisdom of using this tube when Devlin steps into it. His feet quickly leave the ground, though he continues with his forward momentum. The feeling is hard to describe. It's not weightlessness. Gravity still asserts its force on the dwarf, but it seems to be coming from all sides instead of below his feet. It's not uncomfortable or painful, just a wholly new experience. It doesn't take long for him to disappear from sight.

The order you guys enter these tubes is important. Bruagh and Sam, I also need to know if you're going in with your mounts or sending them through separately.

One by one our heroes enter the lava tube. Dernock looks down right impressive as he enters, but by then only Sarnak and Oathbreaker are there to see it. Pity that...

Inside the tube, Devlin tries his hand at a few tricks, but finds it's not as easy as one would think. His body is still being acted upon by gravity, just not the sort he's used to. Through trial and error, his body adjusts and he does manage to make a few turns mid-air, but someone unaccustomed to pushing their body like Devlin does probably wouldn't be able to manage what little he can.

Raeb and Chuckles are not impressed with this trip. Chuckles paws at the air and yelps in dismay, while Raeb's claws scramble for a solid surface. The bear roars in outrage; echoes cascade off of echoes, filling the tube with the sound of the bear's anger. Bruagh is close enough to calm the bear some, though Raeb is still obviously not enjoying this.

Just saw your handle animal check. Raeb will be in fighting shape when he lands & no further checks will be needed.

After a few minutes in the tubes, everyone is racing along at alarmingly high speeds. The walls blend into a blur and any attempt to gauge speed or distance is basically impossible. Despite the speed, there's no air resistance, no rushing wind, no unkept hair-dos. As fast as everyone is going, that must be magical as well.

After what seems like an hour of high speed travel, Devlin catches sight of something approaching...no, that's not right. He's approaching it. It's the exit, and luckily the webbing is still in place at the other end of the lava tube.

Unfortunately, Devlin won't be alone. The dwarf's incredibly keen eye sight detects the outline of a few large creatures shambling near the exit. He's moving too quickly to see what they are before he's spit out of the tube and smacks into the webbing. He feels a slight pulse as he exits that nudges him away from the center of the web.

The three creatures speak in a low, grumbling voice not unlike stone shifting on itself before making their way towards Devlin. "See? I told youz someone threw that rock." The ground shakes as they approach.

We are officially in combat. The enemy has initiative since they were tipped off that someone was coming through the tubes. Each round, two more combatents will arrive in the following order:

Bruagh/Raeb (count as one for purposes of arrival time)
Terser
Sam/Chuckles (count as one for purposes of arrival time)
Shinto
Shonti
Sarnak/ Kyachi(? - see my note above in your post, Evan) (count as one for purposes of arrival time)
Oathbreaker

Regarding the web, reflex DC 15 to avoid being grappled when you hit it. Standard rules per the spell if you fail the check. The exit sends each of you to a different spot on the web, so no danger of crashing into each other. If you make your check, you can act the first round you arrive. Keep in mind that none of you will have any warning of what you're about to run into. A DC 25 perception check will let you know something's amiss before you exit the tube, otherwise you'll likely need some time to get your bearings. I'm not puting down a hard rule here: use your best judgement to RP appropriately.

Yes, I realize I haven't stated what you're fighting. You just exited a tube after an hour or so of travelling along at very high speeds. You'll need to get your bearings and look. Feel free to make appropriate knowledge checks to figure out what they are. First map will be posted tomorrow. For now, Devlin can close melee if he deisres, but has room to get away if he's not feeling that brave/foolhardy. Your enemies are close enough to move, then engage in melee if they so desire.

Devlin shoots out of the tube, connects with the web just enough to slow him down, and lands ready to deal with this new situation. (ooc: missing the web completely would leave you splattered against the side of this cavern. I figured that wasn't your intention...)

The hard skin and crystalline growths reveal the hulking creatures to be rock trolls, He also knows they aren't affected by fire like their cousins, but sonic damage is known to be particularly effective against them. Also, those arms of theirs are pretty long, you'll need to get well within their range before you can even dream of connecting in melee (ooc: 10' reach. Good roll!).

Of course, he can tell just by looking at them that they could grind him to paste quickly if they got the chance.

Thinking quickly, the dwarf uses his darkblood heritage to his advantage. "More food coming? You two go get ready to catch more. I eat this one now." One of the trolls advances on Devlin, while two more go to await their meal. It's not the outcome he was hoping for, but at least he's not dodging those claws of theirs just yet.

Back in the tubes, Kyachi reappears to answer Sarnak's summon. She doesn't have any forward momentum when she appears, so it takes a bit for her to get moving up to speed. When all is said and done, the two of them can still converse thanks to the still air in the tubes, but they're several yards apart (they will still exit at approximately the same time).

Terser and Bruagh, along with Raeb come barrelling out of the tube. Terser clearly wasn't expecting trolls when he landed, so it's a good thing he manages to not get stuck in the webbing. "He's right! More food!" says one of the creatures.

The rest of the party floats along peacefully, unaware of what lies ahead.

One by one the party exits the lava tubes. The trolls seem down right giddy (for trolls) at all the free food being thrown their way. "I told you this would be good idea. Food come to us now!" The troll squaring off against Devlin lunges with tooth and claw. The nimble dwarf avoids the worst of it, but the beast catches him across the belly with his claws.

Devlin takes 12 HP slashing damage.

The other two advance on Terser and Bruagh. "Hmph...no like it when food covered in metal. Harder to get to squishy bits inside," says one before unleashing itself on Terser. These things may talk slow, but they seem to have no trouble moving quickly.

Terser takes 9 piercing damage from the troll's bite and 13 slashing from it's claws. You are very lucky, btw. This thing had 2 nat 20s against you and neither were confirmed.

Bruagh also faces a full attack from one of the trolls, but between his impressive armor and training against giants, he remains unscathed.

Oathbreaker is still a ways off, but feels something is up. He prepares to do some heavy damage when he arrives.

You're too far off to hear anything, but I consider a 34 perception supernatural enough to rule your instincts tipped you off...

Shinto arrives with a clatter and quickly moves to regain his axe and shield when he sees he has company. He feels Domi's warmth surround him as he calls for aid.

Terser, still reeling from the arrival and attack, conjours up fire to surround his longaxe & attempts to keep the trolls at bay. He tried to call upon what he knows about monsters in the area, but can't figure out exactly what these are. Some kind of troll, obviously, but that's about it.

Devlin knows help is on the way and tries to keep the trolls unfocused until his party's full strength is present. He calls out in his best rock troll voice for the others to wait on new arrivals. "No! You eat that little dark one, we eat these, and we all eat the rest. We save the bear for dessert." Guess he fooled them, but they don't seem too intent on following directions.

Bruagh avoids getting stuck in the webbing and calls to his companions still on their way. He steps out of the range of the trolls and asks for Domi's favor for the coming battle. Raeb, meanwhile, is stuck in the web and none too pleased about it.

Dernock sees the exit and hears Bruagh's warning. He sets prepares himself for combat as the trolls come into view.

Sam and Chuckles arrive without fanfare, being vaguely aware that there's fighting going on.

Sarnak and Kyachi enjoy a nice conversation.

Shonti is still flying along, but has a bad feeling about what's going to happen next.

Shonti flies out of the tube at an alarming speed, and is completely caught off gaurd. He must've been getting comfortable inside the tube finally, because he wasn't quite ready to be ejected from it so quickly.. He feels a little "push" from some unknown source as he exits the tube, and comes out the side of the tube, almost missing the web all together. Luckily though, the last strands of the web catch Shonti.. But on the other hand, he is now stuck in the web. Damn these blasted webs!!

Shonti gains his focus back, and begins to rip and tear his way out of the web. He makes it out just in time to turn around and see three rather large, rather hungry looking trolls, and can hear them talking as if his brothers are their next meal... This ain't lookin' too pretty... Think Shonti, Use ye brain!

"Hey guys, how many dwarves you think we can eat?" asks troll #1 while continuing his attacks on Devlin. Luckily, the dwarf remains unscathed.

"I can eat these little guys all day. Good finger food, especially that little one over there," says #2 while pointing at Sam. He stops talking just long enough to take a bite out of Terser. "This one kinda gamey. Drinks too much..."

Terser takes 9 points of piercing damage. Jerry should give warning that our die roller doesn't seem to like newbies...

"Both of you need to shut up and worry about food after these smelly dwarves all dead!" roars the last while lashing out at Shinto. The troll's attacks against Shinto seem especially poorly executed. They don't come anywhere near the dwarf.

Bruagh decides it's time to start dishing out some damage as well and charges! The troll sees him coming and uses his massive arms to intercept and take a piece from him. Bruagh is made of sterner stuff, though. His attack sinks easily into the troll's belly, slicing into the thick hide.

Bruagh takes 12 points of slashing damage from Troll 3's AoO (10' reach - hit AC31).

Terser is obviously tired of being eaten on and flies into a rage! Moving faster than a dwarf should, he circles around the troll and lashes out with his long axe, its range making sure he doesn't have to get too close. The hit connects, though just barely. Between the physical damage and elemental effects, it's a sight to see and makes for one very angry troll.

Neither Sam nor Chuckles are well suited for standing face to face with a troll & get out of harm's way. The gnome takes his rightful place as #1 fan of our heroes and does what he can to inspire them.

Oathbreaker knows he'll have to move quickly to avoid the web he's sure is coming. Good thing that's his specialty...

Dernock is sick of being trapped in a web, but such is life.

Sarnak and Kyachi continue along, but that does appear to be the end of the tunnel coming up quickly.

Devlin gets the heck out of dodge. He draws his weapon and gets back, but isn't quite quick enough & the troll manages to get a claw through his defenses. Thinking quickly, Devlin flips back and catches the troll on the chin. Not enough to hurt it, but it does distract the troll long enough for Devlin to move to safety.

CMD of these things is 24 - just missed it. AoO missed you.

The muscle of the Brothers Zarbadium forgoes axe and shield in favor of his reach weapon. Sending the business end around troll #2's leg, the dwarf pulls back. The troll uses the opening to take a bite from Shinto's exposed shoulder. He manages to hold on to the flail, but the troll is still standing.

Shinto takes 8 damage from the troll's bite. The troll hit AC30 with his AoO. The damage lowers the trip attempt to a 19, which fails.

The smarts of the Brothers Zarbadium arrives, gets temporarily caught in the webbing, and lands on his feet just in time to see the mess they're in.

"Stupid food keeps moving around. Me go eat something else first." Rock troll #1 saunters forward and attempts to grab up Bruagh, but the dwarf easily avoids the troll.

Failed grapple - Bruagh can make an AoO.

"This food mine! Get your own!" shouts #3 at the incursion. Obviously hot under the collar, the troll's attacks go wild and bounce harmlessly off Bruagh's armor.

Beset on all sides by angry dwarves, #2 decides to even the odds a bit and kicks at Terser's ankles. A quick jump to the left and the trip attempt misses...

Shinto & Terser may make appropriate AoO.

Oathbreaker arrives with a flourish and reminds the rest of the group why they keep him around; two arrows plunk solidly into troll #3.

Bruagh busy dodging attacks from two trolls, doesn't manage to connect. He's very relieved to see Raeb is free and able to move up, however!

Just had her take a 5' step to avoid an AoO...figured that's what you'd want.

Devlin, ever the opportunist, slips forward using the many distractions provided by Shinto and Terser. Still, the troll is quick and manages, albeit barely, to take a piece of the dwarf just before Devlin sinks his blade into the troll's solar plexus. The thing lets forth an awful, waleling groan as the blow connects.

Devlin takes 8 points of slashing damage - troll hit AC29 exactly with the AoO.

Terser strikes again, but his axe is deflected by a large crystal cluster on the troll's chest.

Sam and Chuckles continue getting out of the way. Continuing to inspire his companions, his attack goes wide thanks to an exuberant hyena. It's a good thing he's so darn cute...

Sarnak shoots out of the lava tubes and ends up deep in the webbing once again. Kyachi's wings manage to slow her enough to avoid the webbing completely. She takes a moment to get a good vantage point while still in the air. Flying over rock troll #3, she feels the thing's claws tear at her underbelly.

Map's not 3d, but I am noting she's aloft. Note these things are about 15' tall, so she's not out of harm's way. AoO hit AC27 for 13 slashing damage.

Dernock exhales sharply in annoyance at these webs and, to his suprise, slips right out. He runs forward to join the fray and runs smack dab in the waiting claw of rock troll #1. For a moment, he swears he can see Gargul face-palming and shaking his head.

Troll's AoO hit for 10 slashing damage.

Shonti decides to take away one of the beast's main advantages and saps the thing's strength. The ray hits the troll dead on, though the hardy thing shrugs off the worst. Still, some vigor seems to have been taken.

You can't take a 5' step, a standard action, and a move action in the same round. However, since all trolls already made the AoO they get this round, you get lucky and don't get attacked on the way to J13. Fort save was 24 vs DC 14 - 4 str damage for 5 rounds.

Shinto is happy to see his brother weakening the trolls, but likely wishes the one he was squaring off against was the one weakened. He once again sends his flail around the troll's leg. The troll, sickened and busy attacking Devlin, fails to react in time and falls to the ground with a tremendous crash; the vibration of the crystals growing on him providing harmony to his cries of outrage. The dwarf then decides to be somewhere else when the troll gets up.

She looks over his large form to Braugh distracting the troll, and as the battle-song of Sam reaches her ears she strikes forward, slicing at the troll's back with both claws. One missed as she steps back for a moment to reassess, as she notices several openings in the troll's stance provided by Braugh, delivering a sharp strike to the back of the troll's head with her spiked tail, and waiting for a crescendo of Sam's song to bite at the troll's shoulder, the song granting her a slight boon to clarity long enough to land her last strike, grinning as she watched her new acid-tipped weapons start to sizzle the skin of the wounds she had just caused.

Fire's no good.. Don't have much of a voice, an no spells for that.. think Shonti, these Trolls could eat us all if we don't play this smart here.. Shonti ponders for a second, trying to carefully plan his next move. Knowing that whatever happens in the next thirty seconds would determine whether they all live or die. He knows he weakened one of them, but is that enough? This is crunch time in his mind, crucial, and he can't think of a way to bring these Trolls down.

Just when he's unsure of himself, Devlin says something more of Shonti's element. He can't quite make out exactly what was said over all the commotion between them, with the Trolls and all, but he's sure it can only mean one thing! "Acid?! Well I've got plenty of that for them!" He says as he steps just within 15 feet of the nearest Rock Troll, arm outstretched twisting his fingers and rolling his wrist. Shonti yells at the Troll, "My acid will melt your face!" As a big, stringy, gooey glob of greenish, brownish, black acid streams out of his palm towards the troll attacking Dernock.

"You in big hurry to get eaten, eh?" the first troll says to Dernock as the dwarf rushes forward. "I help with that!" The troll goes to bite, but Dernock moves aside just in time. Unfortunately, this gives the troll the opening it needs. Lightning quick, the thing sinks both sets of claws into Dernock and tears in opposite directions. The pain is too much & Dernock falls bleeding...

Dernock takes 31 points of damage from two claw attacks and the troll's rend. That should put you at -3 and bleeding out. Could be worse, troll rolled a nat 20 followed by a 1 when confirming the crit.

Furious at being knocked down by this tiny dwarf, #2 scrambles to his feet and takes a swing at Shinto. Anticipating the attack, Shinto is just barely able to avoid the blow. Good thing tiny dwarves know how to avoid giants.

Troll #3, happy to see a meal not covered in armor, reaches up to take a piece out of Kyachi. Digging both claws into her underbelly, the troll eviscerates the eidolon.

37 points of damage to Kyachi. Let me know if you're using life link to take some of that and keep her here. I'm not going to have her attacks succeed since she's taken enough damage to be sent back home, but I'll edit the post if you take some damage for her.

Reacting to the troll's clumsy attempt to down him, Terser responds with a solid blow to the thing's chest. Recovering his balance, he lashes back at the thing, burying his axe deep on its shoulder and severing its spinal column. Its brain unable to command it's body, the troll falls.

Perception DC 20 to note the wounds slowly stitching themselves back together.

Sam changes to a more opportune target and connects! The bolt flashes as it finds evil & singes the troll.

Sarnak frees himself just in time to see his eidolon take a massive trashing from the troll in front of him. He has just enough time to decide and use life link should he choose...and indeed chooses to do so! Saved by her summoner, Kyachi tears into the troll that attacked her. Her acid-tipped claws rip the life from the beast in a flurry of hissing blood.

Oathbreaker continues doing what he does best. Two arrows sink deep into the troll, lightning flashing as they connect.

Bruagh interrupts troll #1's grapple attempt with a solid blow to the thing's forearm and follows through with a slash across its chest. It teeters for a bit, but stays upright. Raeb charges between the trolls. Both manage to get their claws on her, but thanks to Shonti's magic, #3 is too weak to tear through her hide. #1 does manage to take a piece of her, though. Furious, the giant bear rears back and comes down on top of the troll. Her muzzle fastens around the thing's face until it stops fighting.

Raeb takes 9 damage.

Shonti, hearing Devlin call out, sends a wave of acid at the downed troll. The liquid connects with a sizzle and any regeneration the troll had going on stops cold. There is officially one fewer rock troll in The Scab.

I moved you to M15 to avoid killing Dernock since I assume that's what you wanted...

Shinto swings at the downed troll (#2) and connects with the helpless thing. He succeeds in re-breaking the thing's spinal cord & keeps him down for the count longer.

As Kyachi was ready to deliver her strikes, she was struck in the back by the third troll, crying out in pain as she was nearly knocked unconscious, before feeling the flow of energy from Sarnak, being revitalized to just before death, as she took the opportunity to continue her strikes, taking down the target in front of her, before collapsing to the ground, tired out by her wounds as she looks to the rest of the group. "Unless anyone's opposed, I'm going to go to each of them and make sure that they aren't coming back. I don't want to take any chances of another of these fights."

Sarnak, finally out of the webs, and weaker for having given some of his strength to keep Kyachi in the fight, heads over to her, bringing out the familar wand once again and throwing some healing on her to get her back to full strength. (10 healing to Kyachi)

OOC: I'm not sure if it's relevant, but Kyachi still had total defense active before she took her full attack, so the strikes that dealt 37 damage to her needed to beat AC 27, not AC 23.

DM Carl: They both hit AC30. This combat wasn't meant to kill anyone, but those trolls just kept getting massive rolls.

With all the trolls down, Kyachi is easily able to stop their regeneration with her acidic claws. They won't be getting up again.

Adrenaline works its way out of everyone's blood stream as heals are given to those who need it. There are some grievous wounds, no doubt, but no one will be meeting Gargul today (well, day's not over yet, but no one's in the land of rest now).

Devlin goes prowling for anything of interest here. There aren't any signs that these trolls have been here long, but by the look of things they've had at least one meal. In a corner of the cavern are bloodied, tattered remains of some leather armor and a ransacked pack. There is zero trace of their former occupants and no sign of any weapons or coin. (Your previous knowledge check is high enough to realize the rock trolls would have eaten any metal this poor shlub was carrying.) There is, however, a nice potion bandolier. Rather, it was nice before it was forcibly ripped from the previous wearer and tossed aside. Many of the vials are broken, but three potions still managed to survive. The bandolier itself can be easily repaired by a leatherworker.

The potions will need to be properly identified, but it's easy enough to tell just by looking that they're all different.

You are going to keep that spell readied until I tell you otherwise, or I'll let you deal with the monsters yourself for the next encounter. Do we understand each other?" She looses the stern look for the moment, then gains a happy expression and looks to the rest. "Well, that was fun, what now?"

DM Carl - Rock Trolls all dead
Monday October 8th, 2012 10:37:28 AM

With the rock trolls dead, a quiet falls over the chamber. Heals are sent out by the more divine party members and are greatfully received by those who were on the business end of the trolls. Kyachi takes a stern tone with her summoner, reminding him who is dependent on whom in their relationship.

I really, really liked this bit of RP. Next time you cast shield on Kyachi, you may do so as a free action. This is a one-time-only thing and can't be saved for a rainy day; it affects your next casting only. I sent Rob an email on this so he should be aware.

Devlin hands off the potions to Shonti and continues to get his bearings. There is a single exit from this cavern leading off into a tunnel that was likely carved out ages ago. He declares their marching order and gets to work moving out.

Shinto recovers his dropped weapons and hands some potions to his brother for future use. Shitno inspects the vials for some indication of what they are.

The correct skill is spellcraft. You rolled twice, so I'll use both rolls. You're unsure of what the first potion is. You can try again tomorrow. The second potion is cure serious wounds. Roll once more for the last potion.

Sam and Chuckles don't waste any time & get ready to move. The hyena yips happily at the attention from it's owner.

Bruagh does some triage before expending the limited healing he can muster, then decides to channel the healing out since so many people took some hits during the combat.

Dernock is undoubtably glad for the healing. Perhaps Sam will tell tale of his exploits some day...

Terser looks over Shonti's shoulder as the sorcerer identifies the potions, but can't figure anything out. His rage subsided, he takes a moment to catch his breath before healing himself up a bit.

Oathbreaker lets the others do their thing; he and Devlin take point and inspect the area. Searching carefully, Oathbreaker manages to find footprints that don't belong to the trolls, but with the air as still as it is, it's hard to know how old they are. What he can tell is there were at least three humanoids that came this way. Their gait length would indicate they weren't dwarves. Humans...maybe elves? He can't be certain. Could be either one. He can follow, which is a good thing because the tunnel only goes so far before it opens into a more natural looking cavern. This was likely an easily travelled tunnel system at one point, but seismic activity tore it apart many years ago.

Before heading out, Shonti takes a look at the first potion handed to him. "I'm not quite sure what this one is, I'll have to examine it further when I have a bit more time..... This one on the other hand," he says taking a look at the second vial, "Will definitely come in handy. It is a potion of Cure Serious Wounds. Someone else can have it, I have a wand for minor wounds in my Haversack. It has enough charges to keep me satisfied, for now at least." Shonti looks completely puzzled when he takes the third potion into his hands. "I have absolutely no idea what this one is either, I can't think straight still from flyin' through that tube..."

DM Carl - Rock Trolls all dead
Tuesday October 9th, 2012 8:40:22 AM

Our heroes finalize their preparations before getting back on the trail. Brief discussions are had about the possibility of these tracks being drow. They certainly could be, and the situation does give credance to the idea, but from a strictly technical standpoint Oathbreaker can't make that call.

The cavern itself makes travel difficult. The ground is uneven and it is necessary in several places to climb over ledges or leap over narrow gorges. The ceiling is high enough for Kyachi to take flight, but between the uneven ceiling and stalactites, she's unable to get a soaring look over the area. There are several tunnels, fissures, etc leading away. It would take years to explore them all; luckily, Oathbreaker's hot on someone's trail.

Tracking in these conditions takes every bit of Oathbreaker's focus. Devlin stays close, weapon ready. He is likely impressed with the Oathbreaker's ability, as he seems to be missing most of the trails Tag is finding.

At Sarnak's request, Dernock tells what he knows about Drow necromancers. He is correct that drow don't do well in daylight, but that won't be of much help down here...especially since Shonti can confirm they're slowly moving downward as they travel. After the lava tube trip, no one is really sure where they are. Sam is especially aware of this fact & has a hard time thinking of anything else.

Terser wonders what drow are doing here anyway. Everyone knows the drow got slaughtered in the last age. Hopefully they're not gaining a foothold again. DrakesMeade has enough to worry about with the duergar.

No end in sight - DM RobC
Wednesday October 10th, 2012 3:25:20 AM

Despite Dernock's near brush with Gargul, the party seem to be in fine spirits. The tracks become harder to follow for Oathbreaker, but with Devlin and Terser there to aid him, the trail becomes easier for him to find - not that he admits it.

The trail seems never ending as the party wind their way through the underground caves and caverns. Whilst some provide enough room for the party to spread out and for Kyachi to spread her wings, other parts are extremely narrow and require the party to crawl, sideways shuffle, or shimmy their way through. Raeb does her best not to complain too loudly, but Bruagh can sense her discomfort as the rocky walls brush against her skin.

Every now and again noises can be heard in the otherwise silent passageways. Pebbles or stones dropping on the rocky ground, the squeak of what might be a bat in the distance, the claws of a large rat scurrying around. Though the noises can be heard, what makes them hasn't been seen. Save for the earlier encounter with the rock trolls, no other beings have been found. The footprints however continue.

Hours pass, and with the day dragging on and no sign of the end of these passageways, it seems like daylight and fresh air will have to wait another day. How far you've travelled - and to where - is anybodys guess. You'd guess it would be around nightfall on the surface. Some sort of rest could be achieved in one of the larger caverns, though pushing ahead is also an option.

Bruagh suggests setting up camp for the night, to which the others readily agree. The paladin settles in for a quick nap before taking the middle watch.

Sam seems unsure, but he and Chuckles settle in for rest. The gnome does not sleep well. His dreams are more like nightmares. He sees each member of the party seemingly die in combat. One by one their bodies fall into a bottomless red pool, until only he is left standing and alone. He wakes with a start, and finds Chuckles looking at him intently. Appearing as if he is considering something, the hyena settles down to go back to sleep.

Shinto is just itching for combat. With all this walking around underground, he might as well be a gnome! He takes a seat against a wall and takes first watch. The day isn't over yet, and if he's lucky maybe his flail will get to strike out at something again.

Dernock is set for a night of dreaming, keen to get a good rest and to let nature heal some of todays wounds.

Shonti sets to crafting some more of his necklace before turning in for the day Highlight to display spoiler: {Evan is correct. Crafting time is based on the market price of the item. And yep, the remaining 75gp need to be crafted though you won't need to rush it the next day (ie: you won't need to add the +5 DC)}

Sarnak also sets to crafting - but for him, a wand.Kyachi takes watch while her 'master' plays with the magic stick.

Oathbreaker is keen to keep going, but the others seem comfortable where they are. Who knows what evil is going on outside that he might be able to stop?

The night is relatively uneventful. Early in the night Oathbreaker hears something growl, and quickly raises his bow - only to discover it was Raeb snoring. In the darkness he sees Devlin poised with a crossbow, also alerted by the bear. Throughout the night those on watches continue to hear noises, but nothing makes itself known to the party.

With the party now rested, the camp is packed up and the journey continues. The scouts continue to follow what footprints they can. You'd place it around noon when some sort of light is visible ahead. Daylight.

The tunnels finally ends. Oathbreaker and Devlin scout it out.

The tunnel has opened out into the bottom of a mighty crevice. About 30ft wide, and seems to run east-west. Best guess is that the sides of the crevice are at least 300ft high. The rock face appears natural and dark - volcanic perhaps?

The footprint trail has gone cold.

Re Crafting during watches
I have no issue with people crafting at night - its something I have my PCs do too in fact. That said, I don't think you'd be really "on watch". You'd be awake, but not as perceptive as someone "on watch". For that reason I'd say that if you were crafting at night you wouldn't be able to make perception checks (being so focused on crafting) however you would be awake and ready to attack/defend if need be. Sound fair?

Watches
With the casters each requiring 4hours for crafting followed by 8 hours of rest, the party are camped for at least 12hours. Though nothing happened this time it may be worth discussing amongst yourselves (via email?) how you want to plan for watches in the future? It seemed like everyone wanted first watch. Based on this one, for everyone to get at least 8hrs rest:

Shonti is completely confuzzled when Tag says the trail has gone cold. He walks to the end of the tunnel to check it out for himself... When the tunnel opens up into the bottom of a huge crevice, his only hope of reaching daylight lies way out of reach for a dwarf of his stature. Shonti looks to the sky, longing for the warmth of the sunlight above. This simply cannot be the end... There's got to be something here we can go off of... He hears Devlin talk of Wardd, his "God of Chance" and simply shakes his head before falling to his knees. "Gargul, my Lord.. I have not forgotten my promise to you. Praise be to you that we've made it thus far.... Please, my God, show us the way which we must go from here. Show yourself great, and reveal to me what I need to see to continue going on in these dark days in the depths of Fhorge...."

He stands before he looks to Devlin. "You're right, I do have my God. Gargul will not forsake me... If I find nothing, I will follow East, but leaving our next move completely up to chance... Is simply not something I condone.. I mean no disrespect to you, or your God, my brother.. It just doesn't seem to be the best solution to our current predicament, in my eyes... In the meantime, I agree with Sam. Would you mind checking the walls to see if the ones we're pursuing might have climbed upwards, and out of this crevice if you can?" Sarnak looks among the group attempting to split up and shakes his head. "it's always a horrible idea to split up. If the small groups get attacked, they will have no assistance, and may end up dead. I say whatever we do, we stick together. We don't know what we'll find, I think it best to have our full force to confront it, instead of as scattered groups."

Daylight-ish - DM RobC
Friday October 12th, 2012 12:54:46 AM

The group stand at the bottom of the crevice debating what to do next. There is discussion of splitting up and taking different directions, which is quickly dismissed by Sarnak and Dernock

Terser says his prayers to Domi - that he fight well, his weapons strike true, and that he brings honour to his clan.

Sam thinks the group should start relying on instinct and hunches when they get lost. The last time he relied on instinct he ran around with a live explosive and that turned out well, didn't it?

Oathbreaker decides to start leaving some of his own tracks so as not to get lost in the future. (If you do decide to do this please indicate how/what you are doing)

Devlin decides to leave things to chance and flips a coin in the air. As he watches it spin in the air, he spies an abnormality in the rock face above him. On bended knee and looking up praying to Gargul, Shonti sees the same thing. Maybe 30ft up, a ledge or landing perhaps? Difficult to tell from this position. Has Warrd's luck provided an alternative, or is Gargul making sure deals are honoured? No magic or lingering auras - other than those of the party - are detected in the immediate surrounds.

The light from the sun is filtered by the clouds that cover the sky. Warm gusts of wind blow through the crevice from east to west.

Shintos disappointment shows whenthey reach the dead end. He takes his axe to the wall a few good times, hoping to chip away at the rock to better look at it. Hell pick a piece up anyone know what it is ey? An east west, don matter. Long as we stick together

He then looks to Shonti, If Gargul decides to reveal something, lets check it out. If not, then one gods way of chance might be the lead we should follow. Even if not, one gods chance is better than anothers unanswered prayer He says, just before grasping his anvil charm and whispers his own prayer.

Oathbreaker looks up, cursing himself for missing the odd rock face. He puts his bag down, reaching his hand in and pulling out a thin rope. Shonti can clearly see an aura around it. With a flick of his wrist, the rope knots itself in intervals. He ties a grappling hook to the end and stands back up. "No need to climb. This should take care of it." He walks up to the rock face and whispers a word, allowing the rope to shoot up and secure itself to the small ledge. The masked dwarf pulls on it to make sure it's secured and pulls himself up onto it. "Would anyone care to join me?" And with that, the Oathbreaker begins to climb the rope.

While the others discuss different ways to get up to the ledge, Oathbreaker takes a rope of climbing from his pack and a grappling hook. With the now knotted rope he tosses it up and it catches quite nicely. He gives it a few firm pulls to make sure before he commences the short climb.

Terser and Bruagh await their turns with the rope. Bruagh seems concerned about how he will possibly get Raeb up the wall, but the bear seems to make short work of the rock. Her claws dig in and she is able to start pulling herself up with ease (Sorry, I can't picture a bear climbing with the help of a rope). Soon she overtakes Oathbreaker on the wall, climbing up 10ft

Sam looks for an easier way up - easier for him and Chuckles that is - and Kyachi looks to be it. With Kyachi's permission, Sam hops atop the eidolon and they being to rise in the air. Shonti decides that he'd like to have the next ride, not one for physical effort.

Devlin decides to bring up the rear, and hides in the shadows alert for danger. He keeps an eye on each end of the crevice, but all he sees is black dust whipped up by the hot winds. All seems still. Devlin is just about to relax when he takes a closer look at the rock face. Something is moving behind the gaps and holes he had previously attributed to be natural spaces in the rock. He watches as a number of arrows fly out of the holes towards Kyachi and Sam!

So you're safely on Kyachi's back, but had to hold on so tightly you couldn't take a standard action) Below you, you can see the ledge is more like a flat, open platform. Two sturdy stone doors are visibly closed against the wall.

Bruagh and Raeb hold still and await more details from the others. Dernock seems panicked by Sam's antics, but the gnome does not fall. Chuckles watches on, trying not to laugh.

Devlin starts calling random memes, before taking a closer look at the wall. He and Terser can see now where the arrows came from. Skeletal faces look down on the party below as they raise their bows: undead archers.

Oathbreaker drops from the rope, and rolling, draws his bow to fire. The arrow connects with the side of the rock face, missing the skeletal archer he had been targetting.

Sam does a particularly spectacual swan dive from Kyachi's back, but fails to take into account the warm updraft. He lands on the ledge in exactly the way a bird wouldn't (Sam takes 4 non-lethal damage from the 10ft fall).
Sam only Highlight to display spoiler: { Sam starts to feel a pain in his back and his legs - did he really fall that hard? (Sam to make a Fort save vs DC22 or be in complete agony: -4 penalty on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks). Maybe it wasn't the fall? There is some sort of glowing rune in front of the doors} The gnome crawls towards the edge of the platform.

Shinto and Terser call upon the divine to give these undead permanent rest. A number of the skeletons in the lower levels fall from view (Can only affect the ones both in range & that don't have total cover. 7 kills between you)

Devlin puts himself in harms way to provide cover to Sarnak. Similarly, Bruagh does the same for Shonti (Need a climb check for Raeb though, Bruagh)

Cursing himself for being so careless, Oathbreaker fires two arrows in quick succession - each knocks a skull from view. (Knowledge checks usually needed for the 1st time a PC encounters a particular enemy. Based on your rolls, I don't think it makes much difference!)

Shonti calls on the powers of the earth to vanquish the enemy. Disappointingly you notice only 1 skeleton fall. No stones seem to fall through any of the other 'windows'

Kyachi paws and bites at the nearest skeleton, but the rocky window protects the undead archer from her rage. Sarnak begins casting a spell to aid his eidolon.

Chuckles hides

The remaining skeletons shoot arrows down on the party, though none make contact.

Shinto & Oathbreaker - Please remember to update your HP from the damage last round

========================
You can only have 1 person climbing the rope per 5ft of it.

Kyachi is 25ft off the ground

Sam feels a sharp, burning pain radiates through his back and legs. (fort=8. Rolled a 3.)

"Owwww! My back!"

Sam levels his crossbow and aims at the skeletal archers. Pain wracks his body as he takes his shot. His bolt misses and something horrible happens. (6 to hit. NAT 1! That's the 4th nat 1 in 3 days.)

DM RobC: Man, a 3 and a 1. The die roller really does hate you. From where Sam is laying on the platform, all the archers are in the wall below/underneath you -ie: they can't see you and you can't see them. With that in mind, feel free to change your action

Attack here and we can break through. Let's take the fight to these undead abominations! Quickly, it won't last long.

The gnome decides to lift the spirits of his brothers below. He uses the most heartfelt words that burst forth from the depths of his very soul. A battle hymn that could lift a beaten and bloodied soldier from the carnage ridden fields of battle.

The fighters know their role, and feel more confident to take the arrows than the more magically inclined members of the party.

Despite the pain he is in, Sam does his best to inspire the group with a few choice words (Nice. Copied to the LnB for others to see too). Sam hears something coming closer to him, and is no doubt relieved to find it to be Raeb, who has now also made it to the platform.

Bruagh/Raeb only Highlight to display spoiler: {Now standing on the platform, Raeb can see Sam lying on the ground in obvious pain, and a set of heavy set stone doors against the wall in front of her. On the ground in front of the door is a glowing rune of some kind. Raeb to make a Fort save vs DC22 or be in complete agony: -4 penalty on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks.}

Dernock activates his tattoo and looks forward to getting to knock some skulls loose.

The now large Kyachi flails against the stone wall, but one claw does manage to make it through the small hole opening and tears a skull clean off one of the skeletons. Its body drops to the ground inside. From where Kyachi hovers she can see that this skeleton was in its own sealed chamber - no obvious entry or exit for it - just a window to shoot arrows out.

Oathbreaker fires two more arrows at the skeletons behind the rocky wall, but the holes they are shooting through protect them much like arrow slits would, and his shots strike harmlessly against the wall. With another skeleton down thanks to Kyachi, Oathbreaker counts four more skeletons left around the 20 - 25ft height mark.

All four skeletons release an arrow, but none make it through the party defences.

Chuckles watches on with interest.

Oathbreaker relays information to the party about the four skeletons remaining, but is unable to take care of them himself.

Sam just lays on his back on focuses on his breathing. The pain in his back and legs is his sole focus.

Braugh can feel Raeb's pain, but try as he might, nothing he does seems to soothe the animal. What has happened to her?

Shonti manages to make his mark and plugs one of the skeletons (Sorry, your last post was a miss. This was a hit)

With the skeletons now in pieces, the party make the climb up the rocky wall. Those unaccustomed to physical exertion are given a lift by Kyachi. One by one the party join Sam and Raeb on the platform.

After Kyachi gives him a short, but nice experience of flying with him up past the wall, Shonti falls off of her back. He lands roughly and is barely able to break the fall with his hands as he finds himself face down on top of the cliff with the others. His whole body screams with pain as he hits the ground, much more so than he would expect from falling such a short distance. Shonti's knees feel weak as he starts to stand up, and he see's some of the others swinging axes and shooting arrows at the rune. "AARRGGHH!!! What is this?" He manages to shout, to no one in particular as he slowly gets to his feet. He makes his way, slowly, closer to the rune to see if it is recognizable, and figure out what it is/how to stop it...

Knock knock - DM RobC
Tuesday October 23rd, 2012 1:04:19 AM

Sam and Chuckles are both in pain, but the gnome encourages anyone able to to destroy the rune

Enter Dernock, who - despite feeling the pain himself - brings his axe down with force upon the rocky ground. The rock splits, however the symbol still glows.

Terser shrugs off the ill effects with dwarven mettle. He takes a step forward to look at the rune more closely, and is able to discern it as a Symbol of Pain. Shonti confirms this, though his head feels like it will explode.

Oathbreaker withstands the spell, and decides to shoot it with a few arrows. The symbol does not seem to undergo any change as a result of this.

Bruagh goes to comfort Raeb, who - despite being in such pain - seems to be holding up well. Perhaps a feeling she was used to at the hands of the duergar?

Sarnak cringes in pain as the feelings course through his body. Kyachi pounces at the rocky ground, slashing away. That seems to do the trick, as the glowing fades away.

The pain however, persists.

Devlin looks for a way to open the doors but sees none.

As Sam rolls on the ground in agony, he wonders,"What have I done to have turned the fates (dice roller) so squarely against me? Is this some demonic curse? Will some power greater than myself (DM/site admin) save me from my extreme streak of misfortune (stupid NAT 1 critical failures)?"

With Kyachi's acid dissolving the rune, and having no way of relieving the pain his friends are undergoing, Terser decides to examine the door, though not before letting a wave of energy course over the group. I can't stop the pain, lads, but at least I can fix some of the arrow holes. The pain should wear off in an hour or so.

Sam questions why the gods seem to have forsaken him as he rolls about in agony (get it? "rolls" in agony)

He should glance towards Devlin. The rogue practically feels invigorated by the pain, his skills sharper. Two Nat20s when your teammate rolls Nat1s is just showing off ;)

Terser channels some healing power to his friends, but is unable to ease the pain many of them feel. He tries to push against the door but it doesn't budge.

Shonti is keen to get away from the rune - or what is left of it. Without getting past these doors, the only alternative would to be to climb back down.

Despite a thorough search of the door by many members of the party, no traps, keyholes or opening mechanisms are found. Shinto can feel the air move around the seams of the door. There is definitely some "space" behind it.

He and Dernock are equally confused and frustrated by these magical things. Why can't it just be a nice line of duergar necks to get through?

Sam looks for any marking of any kind that would help open this door, but is unable to see any. He and Chuckles share a moment to moan.

Sam then has a potential brainwave - what about a bomb? Devlin and Oathbreaker are certainly in favour of the idea, though Shonti would rather see if anyone else in the party can knock it down by conventional means. Dernock doesn't put it past the enemy to have gone to all this trouble just to slow the party down. He does wonder about possible guards though.

Sarnak too feels very sore. His eidolon can't see any way to ease the pain, but perhaps she can just tear the door open? Kyachi and Terser take turns to pound on the door. Pieces of rock start chipping off and flying away against the battering by the two. The loud *BANG* *BANG* *BANG* though does little to ease any headaches felt by the others.

After several minutes, the pair have managed to damage the door enough that the remaining rubble can be pulled aside by hand/claw. Behind the door is a wide open tunnel that seems to continue far into the rock. "Took you long enough!" comes a voice from the distance.
