Who Arez Ya? [DM Jerry] Thursday November 8th, 2012 2:32:02 PM
At Yel'kno's response, the a window shade rises just a bit and a pair of eyes looks over the scene. Then the door cracks open--just a bit at first.
Then an old geezer, looking like he should be making moonshine, comes out of the house acting deathly afraid. All dressed in blue, his robe is covered with anatomical drawings of various sea creatures. Strange.
"Who arez ya? Whys arez ya heere?......and thhankz."
He sees Sten down and stirs to motion. Seeming to regain his confidence for a moment, he approaches him and lays some very blue hands on him. Sten is healed of all wounds. The holiness of the old one is palpable.
However, the moment the healing is done, he seems to recoil and become very afraid again and takes a few steps back towards the shack. He yells out his pronouncement: "BEWARE! Ghosts and demons filled those beasts! They were three times as strong as before! Possessed they were!"
His head whips around when Jozhur mentions that some were bit. "Yez I was too, and it was a close thing. They hit me faster than I could attackz and healz. I'ze not faazt as I usta be."
Suddenly remembering yet again that he is "outside" his hut, he quickly backs up to his porch looking around in remembered panic. "See anything? I'm nearly blind and..."

Jozhur takes a good look around, as long as he doesn't see anything threatening looking he will relay that to the old man. He slowly approaches the man as he speaks.
"It's all clear sir, and thanks for helping the dwarf. We're here because we were attacked by pirates, now need food water and supplies to repair our ship. If it's no trouble to you, we'd like to forage and gather some lumber. If there's anything you need help with around here, we could possibly lend a hand in exchange."

Sten awakens, thanks the man, "What is your name? How did you come to be on this island? What is your story?"
Bozzle [DM Jerry] Friday November 9th, 2012 2:44:13 PM
Still darting left and right, the man pulls out some garlic and begins rubbing it on his arms. Then casting, he sets up a magical barrier. "Hopes nonza ya are evilz."
Listening to Jozhur he answers, "Make yourself at home. My swimming hole is your swimming hole. Hmmz....Try to avoid cutting any of the big trees if you can help it--at least not too close to the house. Beware of ghosts. There's something very wrong going on. Ifn you really want to healpz, find out for me what got into those dogs! Nearly scarfed me good they did!"
He continues looking around for anything paranormal.
Spire thinks for a bit and then sees the wizened old man cast again using an alternate set of hand signs that he recognizes. This guy is a very strange variant: Oracle of Waves.
Coerator looks around the vicinity of the shack and doesn't see anything untowards other than the witnessed behavior of the dogs.
When Sten asks the old man's name, the geezer acts as if he can't remember it for a bit and his mouth opens and closes several times. "They....some....Hmmz. I think it was Boz...Bozzle? Somethingz likez that. I've been round these parts for many moons. Before folks started getting busier than a school of minnows round herez. The Beasties....no that's not it. He takes a few steps closer to the man, rubbing the back of his left hand with his thumb. "Excuse me... Bozzle, was it? What are these... Beastlords?" Spire wracks his brain thinking of anything he may have heard about such things. (History: 22)

"Why do we need to steer clear of the bigger trees? Aside from the danger of dropping them on your home that is...." "The treez gives me shade. That'z all. There are plenty further from me'house."
Bozzle seems to come back into his head when the request for healing comes. He examines the arm, asks for water, and makes a "cocoon" out of the water thickening it. Then with a prayer of thanks he pricks the cocoon and the arm is healed with a sound like waves. He looks up to see if anyone else wants help and awaits their coming forward.
"Thankz," says Bozzle to Jozhur smiling as he sits on a rocking chair. "I feelz safe with you folkz around. And I likez the company. You are welcome to camp out here, come inside, or hang hammocks."
Jozhur has not heard of these Beastlords before, though he does his best to search his memory.
Bozzle heals Coerator in a similar manner though he seems to use a warming technique with the water cast, which seems to build back lost muscle.
"What kind of supplies are youz looking for? Wood to fix your boat? Fish to cure for longkeeping? Water? Explainz what you need."
He points out some places where trees can be cut, shows the trail to a spring where they can get water, and promises to supply all the fish they can use.
"If'n one of you would turn that fire over when the dogs are burned, and cover it with dirt, I'd appreciate it. Any bones should be removed from the house area please. You can tell that he's getting more comfortable around the group.
"I'll cook you a feast! Shark's nose I will!"
He hops up, grabs a net and heads to the water. Spinning, he counts heads and then giggling, dives into the water, turning into a shark as he does so. Spinning in a slow circle, about 30' from the shore, he dives in and out of the water like a dance.
Returning to the shore, he transforms back and holding up the net, catches each fish as it jumps from the water into his net.
Cackling, then groaning, he slowly drags the full net towards the shack.
"You friends have about 3 hours before dark. You should use it! Storm likely just before dawn."
Then Bozzle sets about making a cooking fire some distance from the remains of the dogs.

I'll help them with a wand I have if any are injured. As for the rest, better have at it. Night's a comin'. As for the Beastlords: leave them alone. Advice is free. Curiosity brings the shark."
He points again to explain things a second time, wondering if they are hard of hearing or if they don't understand his accent.
"Water, there, down that trail."

I've Got Something Here [DM Jerry] Wednesday November 14th, 2012 2:26:07 PM
Coerator and Sten head down the left/western trail heading north past the shack.
Ian and Rafe work on getting the injured to Bozzle who absentmindedly touches them with his wand while he cooks. He recruits several including the ship's cook to help him. He directs the help and seems to improve the abilities of all around him, without doing much of the "actual" work himself. Bozzle is definitely a natural leader and teacher.
The crew, being well-trained, divides themselves to help the party. Some head down the trail after Coerator and Sten to help transport and cut down trees, pulling axes from the ship's stores.
Others begin to help Rafe pull damaged planks from the deck and other locations to affect repairs on the ship.
Jozhur and a crew of about 6 begin rolling empty water barrels from the ship down the right trail to fill up with water from the spring. Bozzle tells Rafe that if he can fix the wagon behind his shack, they can use it to haul water and wood back to the ship.
About 10 minutes up the trail, Jozhur finds the spring. The water even smells good! There is a winch set up over one side of the spring to lower barrels into the water.
Sten and Coerator, with their portion of the crew, come upon a copse of good sized trees overlooking a tidal cove. Soon one of the crew gives a shout of panic and calls for help!
"Ho there! I've got something here First Mate Coerator!" Backing away with great concern on his face he rejoins his fellow sailors.

The Secret Cove [DM Jerry] Thursday November 15th, 2012 4:42:38 PM
Rafe gets to work on the wagon and it works, though the left rear wheel keeps breaking spokes from the weight put on it. Now to decide where it can do the most good?
Jozhur gets 5 barrels hauled to the spring and begins using the hoist to lower them down into the pool where the spring is. The first two barrels go down and up with ease. One of the sailors climbs down to the edge of the water and seals the lids on with wax before hauling each one up. When the third one is on the way up, the winch sticks. What to do? Some of the sailors say to just to leave the winch to the old geezer to fix and haul them up with ropes. Others say that it should be easy to fix if anyone knows how. One sailor says he has fixed a winch on a ship before and will try if they want him too, but he doesn't look very confident.
Spire picks his berries and returns to talk to Bozzle. However, he finds that Bozzle doesn't like to be bothered while cooking and the only way that Spire will get a word out of him is if he volunteers to join in and cook. Bozzle says, "Nice berries. See if you can make a sauce of them for the meal. There's some broth over there and some flour to thicken it."
Yel'kno keeps the men organized and careful as they enjoy their shore leave. Spirits are high with his motivation and cheerfulness and much work gets done. He realizes that there will still be work to do the next day as the carpentry job on the ship will take longer than the hours left in this day. He begins thinking of where the crew should sleep, watches both on the ship and off, etc.
Coerator, sword drawn heads down quickly into the undergrowth and sees the secret cove. Sten, also present, may join him. The cove is a natural point for accumulated detritus, with scores of pieces of driftwood and sea glass on the small beach. Halfway up on the beach is a huge net trap. Something has dragged half of it up onto the beach and chewed a hole in it. From a distance, that is all that can be discerned. The beach is about 15' below the trees and will require a bit of climbing down a minor cliff will be required to get down to it.
One of the sailors, an alert fellow asked if Coerator wants him to go get the captain and others of the adventuring party. He's already half running waiting on approval to move into a full sprint.

The sailor that shot off his mouth about the winch closes it very fast with the reprimand from Jozhur. Then Jozhur sets about fixing the winch and does so, though it still doesn't work perfectly.
The sailor volunteering to go find the rest of the adventuring party smiles at Coerator's "be quick about it" and says "AIIIEEE SIR!" Then pretends that there is an echo as he runs repeating the phrase over and over.
Sten joins Coerator at the edge of the small cliff waiting for the others to come. The others come too, with time. Ian takes the long way around and helps fix the winch. He also finds the wagon and determines that one of the spokes on the wheel is too short and replaces it. [hey a 20 goes a long way!]
It has been two hours after the fight with the dogs by the time everyone is standing at the top of the small cliff over the beach. Someone will have to descend if a closer look is to be obtained. Coerator ties the rope and Jozhur and Yel'kno work their way down to the beach easily. Sten and Spire keep watch up top with Coerator and do not perceive anything dangerous at the moment from where they stand.
Once some of the group are at the bottom, more details can be seen.
First, it is obvious that this is a very large net trap that probably belongs to Bozzle. Someone obviously uses this regularly in this cove to practice "mundane" fishing skills. Moreover, something has dragged the net up onto the shore.
Next, dog tracks are everywhere.
Third, the net was not broken out of but into. Something wanted to eat the fish inside and chewed through the net from the outside.
Fourth, most of the fish that is left, inside the net, is only half-eaten. A few partially consumed fish are scattered on the beach as well.
Very mysterious.

Getting Lucky [DM Jerry] Wednesday November 21st, 2012 2:40:18 PM
Spire studies the "blackened" fish and realizes that it it definitely not zombies, but disease! This simply has to be the source for the sickness that got into the dogs and made them turn on Bozzle. He's not sure about the type of disease as it seems to be a variant or mutation. His best guess is a very potent version of Filth Fever.
Yel'kno's comment about the quality of the fish that Bozzle may be cooking causes several of the crew to turn pale shades of green "around the gills."
As the group sets about the task of pulling the net up on shore, and trying to avoid Jozhur in case he attempts to hurl again, they realize that it is VERY heavy or VERY stuck. It will break the old net if they apply the force that would be necessary to pull it up onto the beach. Perhaps Spire will get his Giant Killer Squid wish since he didn't get his zombie wish. Perhaps it is a Giant Killer Squid Zombie?
Someone, or some ones are going to have to down there into the murky water of the cove! The lapping water upon the beach makes the prospect even seen inviting as the sound acts as a counter melody to the grossness of the powerful disease upon the partly eaten fish.

Coer decides to head into the water and perceives no squids, zombies, or other nasty situations. The water looks clean and very beautiful in fact. The perfect place to put down a net of this sort with the tide going in and out. He can picture how fish would move with that tide and thus get caught in the net. He makes his way to the shoreline.
Then he is stopped as the decision to send in Larien is made. Rafe gives Larien its instructions and it moves out and under the water.
Meanwhile, Spire sends a crewman over to the house to bring Bozzle up to speed and have him check his fish. The crewman takes off at a good clip. Sten decides to go talk to Bozzle himself and takes off after the crewman. On the way, Sten looks for signs of large animals. He finds none.
As Larien maneuvers underwater, following the net, it perceives no dangers. No squid. No zombies. About 15' out from the shore, he sees a large object at the very end of the net. Some sort of horse? A spear is driven through it--no too large for that. A ballistae spear? It is hard for Rafe to tell for sure, yet the spear and the horse body is caught in some rocks and is extremely stuck.

The combinations of ideas takes care of the spear and gets the centaur pulled up onto the beach. Indeed the Centaur is wearing very nice armor that doesn't seem to be harmed by the exposure to the salt water. Predominate is his pristine backpack with a scroll case hanging from it.
Now that the entire net is up on the shore, you can investigate fully the entire scene and situation. There are mysteries here and things that just don't make sense.
Why are the fish poisoned with a more potent than usual variant of Filth Fever? Why is there a well-equipped Centaur in a Fish net near an island that is only inhabited by an old hermit? Why was this centaur both slain by a trebuchet spear, and caught in a net with poisoned fish?
It makes the mind spin!

As soon as Spire sees the scroll case, he scampers down the rope (Climb: 12) and runs up to the corpse. Ignoring the oddities, he carefully removes the case and opens it, his eyes glowing blue as he casts Detect Magic and quickly begins to read them. (Spellcraft: 32, 17, 32)
Rafe Thornhill 6/22HP | AC19/15/15 | CMD 16 Larien (Eidolon) AC20/18/20*MA* Thursday November 29th, 2012 1:15:35 AM
Rafe ponders the reasoning behind what could have caused all of this and summarizes his opinion, "So centaur guy is sailing on a ship, they get attacked and he takes a ballista bolt through the body and falls overboard. Later, his body is scooped up by this net, but where's the ship? In fact, where's both ships? If there was two--which I think likely since this centaur is a bit too well dressed for a simple fishing boat. I'm thinking the orcs got them. As for the fever, well, who knows how long these dead fishies and centaur been percolating in the warm waters around."
(Michael) Sten AC 16/12/14 - CMD 18 - HP 32/32 Thursday November 29th, 2012 2:21:02 AM
Sten agrees with Rafe about the orcs being involve. They are very prevalent in this area. How many times has this adventuring party encountered them?
The Scroll Case [DM Jerry] Thursday November 29th, 2012 2:22:22 PM
The scroll case is covered with skulls and other symbols of death. Once opened, a very rich and fancy parchment of good size, smelling like daisies, is found.
The smaller one reads, "To the one who finds this parchment. Please take to any priest and have this Scroll of True Resurrection read over my body. You have my thanks and my gratitude. All praise to Gargul the God of Death and Life.
Aziekiel Hoofstomper Most Likely Deceased
Spirysn'rar Kilarn (Ian) AC 18/14/14 - CMD 14 - HP 2/12 Thursday November 29th, 2012 3:07:29 PM
Spire pauses for a moment before closing the scroll case. He stands up and looks to the others, repeating the contents of the scroll. "I... I do not feel comfortable leaving him here." Turning to some of the crew members, he asks for help bringing the corpse to Bozzle. "He should be able to help us. This centaur..." Spire closes his eyes and bows his head for a moment. "This is a scroll of True Resurrection. We should respect his final wish."
(Brock) Jozhur AC18/14/13--CMD 16--HP 26/26 Thursday November 29th, 2012 5:08:13 PM
"Oh, very well. I suppose the centaur could at least tell us how he wound up dead, maybe he'd know something about the diseased fish too. Hopefully ol' Bozzle can help."

(Michael) Sten AC 16/12/14 - CMD 18 - HP 32/32 Thursday November 29th, 2012 8:19:10 PM
True Resurection is a 9th level cleric spell. Sten searches his memory for the name Gargul the God, what moral bent (alignment) is he? We need to get this right. We can't go resurecting a powerful evil person. Knowledge General 8
Cayzle Comments: Note that in the Wold, the gods do not have alignments. They are above your petty pigeonholes. People generally like Alemi (healing) and Domi (protection) and fear Marteus (disease). Gargul (Life and Death) elicits both dread and awe. And respect. PS: Hope you do not mind my comment, Jerry!
Yel'kno (Jon) AC 19/14/15 CMD 17 HP 6/32 Thursday November 29th, 2012 8:49:44 PM
Yel'kno agrees thy should ask Bozzle to come to them instead of trying to move the heavy body all that way. )FYI I lost Internet until a new modem gets shipped here. Stuck using phone)
(Mark) Coerator AC16/15/12 (+4 Mage armor) ~ CMD 20 ~ HP 32/32 (3 Non-lethal) Thursday November 29th, 2012 10:39:32 PM Very trusting of the fellow to hope whomever found his corpse will follow his wishes. That scroll, not to mention his other belonging cant be cheap. I guess he is lucky WE found him.
I can't wait to ask why someone felt the need to shoot him with a ballista!
(Philip) Kerg Halg AC 14 - CMD 19 - HP 28/28 Friday November 30th, 2012 12:56:32 AM
Kerg tries to hide his whirring mind behind a mask of understanding. Most of what everyone is saying escapes him, and the name Gargul only brings up vague memories of things he was taught while a slave. The paper seems to be important though, and in a way that can help a dead creature. He had recently seen how the powers these people use can mend flesh. Could there be a power to restore life too?
New Fangled Adventurers [DM Jerry] Saturday December 1st, 2012 12:13:54 AM
Boggle waves and in his rusty high-pitched voice says, "Right up here!" He's up with the rest, recently arrived.
"I suggest getting the body back to the shack. I don't want to leave the food for long with your "partly trained" sailor cooks."
You also hear him grumbling saying, "Adventuring groups these day with their druids and new fangled alchemists. Never see a proper priest anymore. But then I'm not one either. Hope I remember how to do this."
Once back at the camp, he asks that the body be kept inside the shack and out of the elements. "Do one of you have a Freshen and say a Mend spell or something like that? Something to clean the body up a bit and make him smell better?"
(Mark) Coerator AC16/15/12 (+4 Mage armor) ~ CMD 20 ~ HP 32/32 (3 Non-lethal) Sunday December 2nd, 2012 5:45:45 AM
Coer rustles around in his backpack and pulls out what appears to be a roll of paper.
You know what? I won this in a lottery some time ago and have been carrying it around with little opportunity to use it. Now seems perfect. Lets see if it works
Coer tears a square off the roll and wipes it over the corpse,
Anyone else care for a square? offers Coer.
~~~ ooc: I won the following in the L'n'B lotto back in August: A roll of 1001 sheet toilet paper: each sheet is permanently enchanted with Prestidigitation and will leave the surface you wipe crystal clean with no residue. Enjoy those special times, 1001 times.
(Brock) Jozhur AC18/14/13--CMD 16--HP 26/26 Sunday December 2nd, 2012 8:07:50 AM
"Yes, please. That was disgusting". Jozhur takes a square of toilet paper from Coer, and heads off into the brush to strip down and clean up.
Spirysn'rar Kilarn (Ian) AC 18/14/14 - CMD 14 - HP 2/12 Sunday December 2nd, 2012 11:04:16 AM
Spire waves his hands slowly down around himself, casting Prestidigitation on himself, and subsequently on the corpse to help with the cleaning.
Yel'kno (Jon) AC 19/14/15 CMD 17 HP 6/32 Sunday December 2nd, 2012 2:10:39 PM
Yel'kno takes a wipe from the roll and washes off a bit, marveling at how well the small wipe works. "Fantastic roll up have there, Coer." And to Bogglr he asks, "give the diseased fish we saw on th beach can you be certain the fish you so graciously caught for us are not infected?" And regarding the centaur a moment, "and hopefully Gargul does not mind us calling on him for a stranger."
Rafe Thornhill 6/22HP | AC19/15/15 | CMD 16 Larien (Eidolon) AC20/18/20*MA* Sunday December 2nd, 2012 4:53:35 PM "What a wonderful prize, very useful indeed!" Rafe gratefully takes a sheet of the magic paper since he did not have access to that type of spell and then caringly wipes down his eidolon.
(Michael) Sten AC 16/12/14 - CMD 18 - HP 32/32 Sunday December 2nd, 2012 9:24:07 PM
Sten takes a wipe from the roll and clean up.
(Mark) Coerator AC16/15/12 (+4 Mage armor) ~ CMD 20 ~ HP 32/32 (3 Non-lethal) Sunday December 2nd, 2012 10:25:29 PM
Coer also offers the wipes to the crew who carried the body
(Philip) Kerg Halg AC 14 - CMD 19 - HP 28/28 Sunday December 2nd, 2012 11:08:41 PM
Kerg uses a sheet too, a little marveled by how well the square works.
