The morning dawns crisp, with clouds mounting the peaks in the West. The Valley is very well protected, but weather may be harsher outside of the secret Valley.
Not one WLAer has been killed on the expedition, but their numbers have been cut by a quarter. Eight heroes left Rum, and only Six leave the Valley; Brom and Barratore, Harvest and Peza, Lemick and Gerox. Stonger, wiser, and smaller, the group is prepared and ready to leave the Valley.
..........................
All PCs need to complete Catacombs transactions by Monday Post. Any PC without an open Ticket in the Catacombs by Sunday night will not be allowed any purchases for this module.
So far, Harvest and Brom are approved with Catacombs purchases. Barratore and Peza have Tickets but have not recieved DM approval. Gerox has elected to not spend any $. Lemick? I hope Anthony is OK???

One last check upon the seeds and cuttings that she had collected and cataloged from within the valley of the Hrrerricko. There had been many of them, and the magic bag will now prove its usefulness in carrying them all safely back to Rum. There is one in particular that she had not seen on the coast and is now anxious to see whether it will grow in the area of Rum. The plant yields the most delicious yellow crescent shaped fruit, the likes of which Harvest Moon has never seen before.
After bidding farewell to the Hrrerricko and their valley, Harvest Moon settles once again into the routines of travel. Her eyes are ever sharp, both on the lookout for food and water as well as on the lookout for danger. And, when the chance presents itself, she takes out the map of the Fixers and takes it to a high place. There is little point in abandoning the mapping. They are coming this way anyway, might as well make the best use of circumstances.

Welcome back DM JonT .... my question to you is what will be your posting schedule/time aprox ???
JonathanT (Co-DM) - The Beach Calls Monday November 5th, 2012 11:20:35 PM
OOC: I will try to post between 9:00pm and 10:00pm Central Time.
IC: The WLAers have packed and are ready to leave, explaining to the catpeople, or Hrrerricko's Children that they have orders to head east, towards the coast to meet a ship. This takes some explaining since the word 'coast' is not in their vocabulary, nor is the word 'ship', or 'waves'. However, using a brook as an example, they get the idea but it is still clear that they don't truely grasp the concept of a body of water so large one can't see across to the other side. To explain what a ship is, they set a large leaf to float downstream and explain that it is made of wood and can carry a lot of people.
Not to worry, though, as TB will soon see it all and will come up with appropriate words for all the new suff he sees, like beach, ocean, waves, ship, tavern, and so forth.
With hoots and hollers Hrrerricko's Children give the WLAers a cheerful send off and the group looks east. Settling into their old traveling patterns, it isn't until night they truely feel the absence of their two friends as they work out their Watch shifts.
The night passes uneventfully and the next day, and next, and next, they see much the same terrain as before. Harvest is pleased that the map still works and is filling in the huge blank space a little more. Without any borders, the map gives the impression that the land goes on forever, but once that beach is hit, the WLAers will finally be able to better visualize the size of the island.
While Brom and Harvest look for animal tracks, edible veggies, and danger, Peza and Lemmick keep alert and ready, and Gerox tries to jest with Barratore, who does not get the jist of the jest. Being back into the Wilds, so-to-speak, has brought some tension into the group, specially with their fewer numbers.
DM OOC: I do believe you still have a mule or donkey, right? I'll need to know who's primarily in charge in case some Handle Animal checks are necessary.
Also, if anyone has word as to Lemmick's availabilty to post, let me know. I don't want to plunge you guys into combat just yet if some are having trouble posting due to Sandy.

Midst her busy day of foraging, mapping, collecting of plants, and some small scouting (without mention of the few hours in the evening that she devotes to the study of the book of the Beastlord Ericko) Harvest Moon had, from the beginning days of their departure from Rum, taken upon herself the care of the pair of mules, Eeoh and Sister Sarah. It is unfortunate that both have, at times, proven themselves not immune from the willful nature that has come to characterize their kind. Today, unfortunately, happens to be a day in which they both choose to be willful at the same time. The lure of succulent grasses draws both animals from the path, and it is only through their training that Harvest Moon is able to command the pair to stop.
Placing herself before both wayward mules, Harvest Moon explains, in a stern voice and with hands upon her hips, the schedule that they are on and the need for expeditious travel. At the end of her lecture the small half elven girl gives a mock sigh of exasperation and blows the crest of hair, how hanging down over one eye, off with a puff of air. Her look of remonstration then fades, and she produces from her pack a large white root that she had foraged. She had found these to not only be edible, but quite sweet and delicious. Harvest Moon breaks the root in two and feeds one half to each of the mules.
"Come now. We must go," she says, and leads Eeoh and Sister Sarah back onto the trail.

The prospect of getting to go for a dip in the ocean excites Harvest beyond measure. It would seem that it would excite the others just as much since none have had a good bath in quite a while...
Gerox makes sure each day that the mules are ok by using his natural ability to speak to animals. Eeoh and Sister Sarah, known to each other by each one's smell rather than by a silly sound, assure the gnome that they are fine but the grass was better back in the cat's valley.
Barratore is not in the mood to lecture Gerox on the finer points of minotaur mating habbits. Perhaps the minotaur just doesn't want to give the gnome any more amunition to use against him.
Brom just minds his own business and keeps attentive to the trailblazzing tasks.
Peza suggests Gerox try riding one of the mules. Eeoh's onery looks seems to promise the best chance for some fun. The two mules have lost much of their original load of supplies, thanks for the long months in the bush, but Harvest's gatherings threaten to increase their load to more than what they had to start with!
Harvest's statements seem prophetic as they finally feel the sea breeze on their faces. Cutting through the brush a few more hours brings to the ear the telltale sounds of waves crashing on the shore. The path to the coast has not taken them all that long as they took a rather direct path eastwards, as direct as the hilly terrain allowed, that is.
As sudden as a jack-in-the-box pops out of his box, Peza nearly finds herself in the wide open space of nothing but blue skies and bluer water! Her quick reflexes keep her from plummeting over the cliff as she pushes aside some thick undergrowth.
Looking down, her heart beating furiously, she sees the rocky shore some 200 feet below! The heavy waves crashing against the rocks with tremendous force shooting spray high up the cliff and, carried by the wind, into their faces.

At Peza's abrupt halt, Harvest Moon gives the command to Eeoh and Sister Sarah to stop.
It is a startling drop to the sea below. But it is a magnificent view from the top of this cliff. Harvest Moon immediately calls for the magic map of the Fixers, and her magic bag complies. This great height will be of tremendous advantage to the mapping.
"I think that a question we must ask is whether the men of Scully Swiftblayde have already come to this point upon the coast and passed. Or whether they have not yet reached here." These words does Harvest Moon speak, even as she watches a large swath of the coastline drawn magically onto the Fixer map. "If they have already passed, then we must turn to the south and catch them. If they have not yet arrived, then we might proceed north, possibly setting a camp with a fire signal and await their arrival."
As the map is drawn, Harvest Moon's sharp eyes roam the land. All of the land comes to its shape for a reason. Once one knows such reasons, it is not unreasonable to be able to predict in what shape the land nearby will be formed.
"I think it may be best to camp nearby," she adds. "Possibly near a beach. From there, we might ask Captain Sal Theringer to speak to the men of Scully Swiftblayde and report to us their whereabouts."

They party marvels at the beauty of the postcard view as well as wonder which way to go from there.
Scanning the ocean waves there is no sign of Scully's ship and the sunlight sparkling off thousands of waves play tricks on the eyes of some. Looking north the cliff seems to go on for many more miles. However to the south the cliff gradually angles down to nothing. A couple of miles at most southward looks like the best place to get off the cliff and get your feet wet.
Gerox poses the problem of getting the mules aboard Scully's ship, something that will take some ingenuity to accomplish. The gnome also suggests giving Captain Theringer a call and letting him know they've arrived at the coast. Somewhere.
Peza suggests building a smokey signal fire, a good way to catch Scully's attention, but she also realizes that it will catch the attention of anyone or anything else nearby.
So what do you do? Take the time to make a bonfire? Or at least get one ready? or go southward straight on down to the beach first? Call the Captain now or wait until you have our feet firmly imbedded in the hot sands?
Gerox Shale ac 13 hps 30/30 Friday November 9th, 2012 8:32:50 AM

I think it makes sense to head down now and then call in to the Captain to see where Scully is. We have to meet him on the beach somewhere and even if we have to head north, that looks like the best way to get there."
He grins at Harvest and continues, "Besides, that way Harvest can dip her toe into the ocean and maybe we can catch some fish for dinner."
Harvest Moon (HP35/35; CMD 20 / AC19) - Al d20+13=19 ; Friday November 9th, 2012 9:59:46 AM
"Perhaps," replies Harvest Moon to Gerox Shale. The expression upon her face is one of serious consideration. "But fish are very swift. And many fish of the ocean are quite large and fierce. It would be easier to eat of clams or other shellfish. There are also many sea plants that can be eaten as well."
"I think it would be best to light a signal fire later, Peza," she adds. "It is not so far to return up to this spot later to light the fire. And, as you say, the smoke would draw attention from all, not only the men of Scully Swiftblayde."
Harvest Moon ponders her own words as she turns southward, calling to the mules, and begins the descent down the cliff. It is truly better to know things before acting. Caution, bolstered by knowledge, is the path to safety and survival. Given, that is, one has the leisure to acquire knowledge. At this time, there seems to be leisure aplenty.
Even distracted as she is by these thoughts, Harvest Moon manages a weather eye for danger. "We should scout this area first. The Landing Beach of the Beastlords is somewhere upon the island. It would be ill advised of us to call attention to ourselves if it were nearby."

No one seems to get Gerox's jokes these days as Harvest goes on about the ease of catching shellfish as opposed to fish. Heading south as well she suggest scouting around the area as well.
Peza also agrees that getting to the beach first and then calling their WLA leader is he best idea.
Barratore shows his concern for their return trip aboard Scully's ship, considering their past history with the band.
A couple of hours later the party finds themselves off the hill and onto an expanse of flat land. Although there are hills nearby, this area serves as a conduit for a shallow stream that empties into the sea. The valley is mostly grassy with clumps of trees. Folowing the stream to the beach poses no problem and some ten minutes later they group crosses the line from knee-high grasses to warm sand.
The sun perches on the horizon about an hour's trip to go before dunking into the sea. The surf crashes upon the sand in a rather pleasantly inviting rythm. The warmth of the day is still heavy and a good splash-about seems to be in order. Except for the mules. Eeoh and Sister Sara stay put at the edge of the grass. While Peza engages Captain Theringer, Brom notices something odd sticking our of the sand several hundred yards south of their position. It looks like a pole sticking out of the sand halfway between the surf and the grasses, leaning slightly towards the surf.

IC: Brom points out the 'pole' sticking out of the sand and Gerox promptly hustles the three hundred yards to the object. Brom wonders if it has anything to do with Beastlords but from his spot it is hard to tell.
Peza stops her report and to Captain Theringer's great surprize cuts off the Telestone to see what Brom has found.
Gerox, on the other hand, is right there, after a 300 yard trot, and easily sees the anomally sticking out of the sand well before he reaches it. However, up close, it is a daunting thing, to say the least. What looked like a mere 'pole' from 300 yards away, is actually a stone pillar with expertly carved animal effigies (OOC: like Totem Poles) The stone obelisk looks as good as new.
Another 100 yards further south is another at a point where the beach makes a curve.
The stone obelisk is about 20 feet high and 10 feet square at the base, tapering slightly at the top. The animal effigies are stylized but otherwise not hard to make out. It leans slightly towards the water due to the inclination of the beach.
Gerox wonders if digging around the base will tell him how deep it goes. His intuition tells him that it will be pretty deep, deeper than his little hands can dig in the soft sand, but then again, you never know for sure until you try. Does Gerox still want to dig?

"Gerox, it seems unworn by time and tide, can you detect any magic?"
The discoveries down the beach draw Harvest Moon like an iron nail to a lodestone. Though not entirely unexpected, considering the traces of the Beastlords that they have found so far upon this island, the presence of such things as these obelisks and the Pyramid within the valley of the Hrrerrickko are alluring and mysterious simply by virtue of their incongruity with the surrounding land.
Looking up at the towering stone objects that thrust their way from out of the sand, Harvest Moon is again taken by the odd image of the giant statue, also half buried upon a sandy beach. All that is exposed is the upper torso of the woman, and the torch that she holds aloft. This time words come to her as well, accompanying the image. You maniacs. You blew it up. Oh, damn you. Goddamn you all to hell.
Queer. And inexplicable. Harvest Moon shakes off the oddity, and, with an energy fueled by her thirst for knowledge, begins swarming all over the site. She utilizes magic gifts, examines the ground as well as the great poles of stone themselves. Harvest Moon even goes so far as to attempt to scale one of the obelisks to examine the upper end. Harvest (OOC: makes a referrence to Planet of the Apes?) skips along the warm sand and when she reaches the obelisk she casts her detection magics and proceeds to inspect the thing, even so far as start climbing it to examing the top.
Gerox casts his own detection spells and scans the area around him. He comments on the freshness of the stone carvings and hopes they don't come alive. Ya never know...
Lemick studies the pillar as well, but looking for other details.
Peza urges caution, reminding everyone of Heerikos' explosive lab equipement.
(DM OOC: Brom can post catch-up when he gets a chance)
The WLA'ers proceed to investigate the obelisk in quite a scientific manner, each one using their different skills to find different things, with a worried Peza watching, just waiting for it to blow up.
Barratore notices another obelisk inland, placed, as best guess, some 200 yeards away.
Harvest detects an Evocation aura emanating from the obelisk. She finds that climbing the stone is easy as there are plenty of easy hand-holds due to the animal head carvings. She sits prettily atop the thing and gets a good view, noticing the right angle formed by the three obelisks.
She sees no arcane symbols but does recall that some cultures use such devices to scare evil spirits away. This does not look like the case here, though.
The stone is a hard granite, and not native to the beach area, at least not in the immediate vicinty.
She does notice that no trees are found within 20' of the 'plane' between the obelisk she sits on and the one 200 yards inland. Naturally, there are no trees between it and the one down the beach.
There are no writings that she can tell, unless the animal heads themselves are symbols other than animal heads. There are no referrences to compare with, so that will just have to be put away in her memory banks.
Gerox scans around with his Detect Magic and sees a wall, best described as a 'wall of force', that is as high as the obelisk and runs from the obelisk in the direction of the others as far as his detection can reach.
Lemick deduces from the three pillars that they are placed as to be within line-of-sight. It would be mighty odd to only have three in this way, so a good guess is that there are more, but the terrain, the beach curving and the edge of a hill blocking the view of possible others.
Everyone can hear a 'hum' or 'buzz', not unlike that of a bee, coming from the obelisk.

Harvest Moon waves down from atop the dark pole of animal carvings. From the greater height of the top of the pole, the half-elven girl scans the surrounding terrain for signs of peoples who might live here. After this, she begins her descent.
"I think that this is a very great magic fence," she says upon arriving back upon the sands of the beach. "It goes here. And then here." She draws the two legs of the invisible fence in the sand using her finger. "If this is true, then I think that there must be another Great Pole about ... here." After poking her finger into a point that completes the roughly rectangular form, Harvest Moon stands and points in the direction in which the fourth pole must, given her hypothesis, be.
The hum from the Dark Animal Pole cannot help but be heard. But, as she has already scaled the Dark Animal Pole to its top without harm, it is something that she dismisses as little more than the magic of this place.
"If we wish to go within the enclosure of this fence, I do not think that it would be so difficult to simply scale the poles and descend into the other side. But, before we do such a thing, I think it would be best to travel about the outside and discover the extent of the territory that the Magic Fence encloses. Perhaps we will see what is kept within."

JonathanT (Co-DM) - Get out your flipflops, sun tan lotion, and beach towels... Thursday November 15th, 2012 10:44:46 PM Brom concerns himself with the ocean and what might lurk in those waters. The surf comes near their spot but it looks like that even at high tide the water does not reach the obelisk. He warns the other to stand back and be on guard, but the curiosity of the others prevails over his warnings.
Gerox points out the magical wall, which Harvest can also see. Much speculation goes into its purpose. Keep something in? Keep something out? He suggests throw something inanimate at it and see what happens.
Harvest looks inward. The sandy dunes go inland a hundred yards or so before a tree covered hill blocks her view. From her perch, she sees nothing that would indicate danger. The distant trees seem to have its normal bird life, insects flit here and there.
The only tracks she sees are their own.
Barratore takes up Gerox's suggestion and tosses a handfull of sand at the invisible wall. He sees the clump of sand hit something and plop to rejoin its kind. It occurs to him that the buzz was already there when he arrived, it's just that with the excitement and the noisy surf, he didn't notice it right off.
Lemick suggests they follow the beach side of the invisible force wall for a ways.
Peza wonders if the buzzing is a warning. She also wonders that if it is a fence, what could it be keeping in, or out?
There is a general concensus that the obelisks are magical fenceposts, Harvest even suggesting where another might be. But whether it is to keep something in or keep something out, further investigations will be necessary. One suggestion is to follow the magical barrier along the beach.
Eeoh and Sister Sarah find some dune grass to munch on while the WLA'ers discuss their options. From Barratore's experiment, it appears that 'touching' the magical wall is rather harmless, for sand at least.
Brom, in his vigilance, notices that the sun is about to kiss the horizon. It will be dark pretty soon.

"If danger comes from the outside of the fence, we can climb the pole and climb down inside the fence."
She measures the distance between herself and the Invisible Magic Fence, hefting the mussel in her hand.
"Though, I do not know how much use such a fence as this can be if the poles are so easy to climb. Perhaps they are here to contain large four footed creatures."
With an underhand toss, Harvest Moon arcs the living mussel into the Invisible Magic Fence. As the shell reaches the top of its arc, Harvest Moon recalls that entire Eeoh nor Sister Sarah will be able to climb the pole. If they were to escape to the inside of the fence, the mules would have to be left to a certain death. This brings a deep frown to her half-elfish features.

She worries about the two mules if indeed they venture over the fence to explore.
The molusk bounces off the 'fence' landing close to Harvest's feet. I doesn't seem to have suffered anything other than being out of its natural element for an extended amount of time.
DM Note: although there are enough hand-holds on the obelisk, the Climb DC is 10. Once up and once again down.
Peza gets busy in building another firepit (one already built where you first reached the beach and where you left the Firestone thing), in the sand mentions gathering sticks big enough to be used as torches to place around their camp to extend their vision at night, hoping for a full moon later on to help.
Lemick agrees about the dangers of exploring the fenced area in the dark and also wonders about what do to with the animals. He takes a piece of driftwood gathered for the campfire and taps the invisible wall.
He finds the wall, although invisible, certainly solid, but having seen nothing happen to a handful of sand, a gasping-for-water molusk, and his stick, he inches his hand closer and closer to the wall until he touches it. Although he can't see it, he feels the solid form.
So far, his hand is unharmed. :)
Brom has objections to camping so close to the fence and beach and urges the others to find a place more inland and on higer ground. His 'urging' is rather forceful.

A stream several hundred feet away offers some good water.
By the time they finish setting up camp and getting something to eat, it is fully dark. The stars twinkle brighly, the surf can be clearly heard crashing upon the beach. Others had the watch, others he trusted as much as his own senses. Soon Barratore drifted into a peacful rythmic sleep

Casting Light on a stone, Harvest tosses it down the knoll towards the noise in the bushes. At first she sees nothing unusual, the bushes and grasses gently teased by the light breeze, some large rocks here and there... rocks?
One of the large 'rocks' suddenly sprouts six legs and stands up, two beedy eyes on short stalks glare up at Harvest. Two long forearms reach out and the clawed ends snap shut several times making a clicking noise. This brings another 'large rock' into view and they start up the knoll twards the campers!
Harvest and Lemick Highlight to display spoiler: { see what appears to be crabs of the unusual size sort. Their bodies carried by six legs stands at least as high as a dwarf, their two massive pincers large enough to easily snatch medium sized creatures!}

Instead of waiting for the others to post that they are asleep, I went ahead and posted what Harvest saw and got it going from there.
Entangle Spell
This spell causes tall grass, weeds, and other plants to wrap around creatures in the area of effect or those that enter the area. Creatures that fail their save gain the entangled condition. Creatures that make their save can move as normal, but those that remain in the area must save again at the end of your turn. Creatures that move into the area must save immediately. Those that fail must end their movement and gain the entangled condition. Entangled creatures can attempt to break free as a move action, making a Strength or Escape Artist check. The DC for this check is equal to the DC of the spell. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the effect lasts.
Entangled Condition
The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a --2 penalty on all attack rolls and a --4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell.

Round 0 recap: Drawn to the little knoll by the smell of flesh, two giant crabs approach the camp. Their size and sideways walk make it difficult for them to negotiate around the bushes without making noise and the camp guards are alerted when the two giant crabs approach the bottom of the knoll.
Casting a light spell on a stone and tossing it towards the noise, Harvest illuminates the area and reveals the presence of the two giant crabs. She sounds the alarm as the two giant crabs start moving towards her.
Round 1: Harvest alerts the camp and casts an Entangle spell. The area of effect easily encompasses the two giant crabs and roots, grasses, and bush branches grow and reach out to grasp the two giant crabs.
Lemick calls for a volunteer to guard the two mules then moves towards the crabs to engange them. (Double Move at 20'/move puts you at T14, ok?)

Barratore snatches his bow as he stands up and loads an arrow. Hearing that they are being beset by crabs, he calls to Brom that their not-quite-midnight snack has arrived.
Brom awakens with a start and snatches his sword as he stands up. Hearing Barratore's exclamations, he calls back that there's not enough ale.
The group is now fully awake and alert. Although only Harvest and Lemick are currently in position to actually see the two giant crabs due to the angle of the knoll and vegetation, they know that there are two giant crabs coming at them.
Sister Sarah and Eeoh start to get agitated. They may be stubborn mules, but they are smart in their own way and can sense danger by the reaction of the party.

Crabs, quite strangely, are greedy and voracious creatures. It is good that Brom is near to strike the one that has captured Lemick 4-Leaf Sted, for it is the estimate of Harvest Moon from having watched crabs upon the beach, that this one will now begin to eat of Lemick 4-Leaf Sted - before he is even dead.
Harvest Moon speaks the words of the blessing and then flicks out one hand with palm up. Within her palm a wisp of steam rises, roiling, and then bursts into a ball of flame.

OOC: dogs are very good at staying put for long periods of time and despite distractions. "Stubborn as a Mule" is a well known phrase for a good reason. :)
I'll give it to ya that your trainig for the mules will keep them put for a short period of time, but I'd say their attention span is rather short and food is always on the mind. Without a tether they would begin to wander. Besides, if something spooked them, you don't want them to bolt before you get a chance to try to calm them.
A "Speak with Animals" spell would be effective in the long run to tell them to stay put or run the risk of getting eaten.
If anyone has that spell, you can OOC: and state you used it. Otherwise I'll assume they are tethered with a range of 10' to wander around their tree.

It is good to see them obey. Especially when it is their lives that matter. With Eeoh and Sister Sarah moving off, slow as their hobbled legs can take them, in the direction commanded, Harvest Moon turns her attention to the attack of the Great Crabs.
Harvest Moon draws back her arm and hurls the ball of fire at the lone living crab that struggles within the grasping plants. It is not a very good through. But it does not need to be. All it needs is to touch the Great Crab in order to burn it with its fires.

It is almost unimaginable, the size of the crab that appears. It is understandable now, that a wall of the type between the Animal Poles would be built in order to protect against such things. She had heard of crabs, however, that climb into trees in order to eat of the large round nuts that grow in the heights. But, even so, it would be difficult for a crab, or so surmises Harvest Moon, to climb one of the Animal Poles in the manner that she did earlier today.
Harvest Moon hurls another ball of fire, this one aimed at the Giant Crab. It is a throw that benefits from good fortune as much as from good aim. The ball of fire strikes true and well on the heels of the silver magic of Gerox Shale and the mighty horns of Barratore Steelwind.
"Go," she urges the mules one more time, shooing them up the hill. While following after them she turns her attention to the sights and sounds of the surroundings, seeking out other threats. She feels the keenness of her own senses that hear even over the din of battle.

JonathanT (Co-DM) - Get out your flipflops, sun tan lotion, and beach towels... crab cooking pot... Tuesday November 27th, 2012 11:16:53 PM Barratore grins as the large, very large crab heads towards him. He jabs a horn into a spot between the upper and lower shell and feels the horn penetrate.
However he also gets nabbed!
Barratore retaliates by 'horning' it again. He barely manages to do so but the crab does flinch.
Gerox summons some arcane energy and sends it towads the large crab. The magic missiles leave burnt marks on the shell.
Harvest sends another little ball of fire at the giant crab then moves towards the mules to keep them moving, and positions herself between them and the giant crab (P10).
Brom rushes past the struggling Lemick, again, and tries to take the glory away from Barratore. His swing once again smashes crab shell.
Three dead crabs in such short order leave the group panting, well, maybe not 'panting', but weary of more crawling things in the night. Big crawly things.
The mules are calmed down in short time, the writhing vegetation finally dissipates, and stars continue to twinkle as if nothing had happened.
Everyone has dreams of crab meat for breakfast but it is one thing to kill a crab, another to 'skin' it.

Harvest Moon (HP35/35; CMD 20 / AC19) - Al d20+14=28 ; d20+12=22 ; Wednesday November 28th, 2012 9:25:27 AM
"Yip! Hooyah!" Harvest Moon gives a small leap and dances between Eeoh and Sister Sarah before rushing down the hill to more closely examine the Great Crabs. With a wave of her hand she dismisses the magic that compels the brush and grasses to seize upon any who enter their demesne.
With a leap, then, and quick scramble, Harvest Moon makes the summit of the largest crab. From that height she stands tall and looks out over the dark landscape with triumphant hands on hips. But then notices that even upon the back of the Great Crab she is no taller than the shoulder of Barratore Steelwind.
It is time to pursue more serious matters. Harvest Moon hops down from the back of the Great Crab and begins an investigation. The size of each claw is often a way in which one may distinguish different types of crabs. So too, is the color and shape of the shell. Harvest Moon enlists the aid of the stronger League Adventurers to turn each crab over so that she might determine the sex.
"Crabs must shed their shells in order to grow," says Harvest Moon as she goes about her study. "If these crabs grow to this size naturally, then they must be very very old. It is ... unusual. I think that these must be other creations of the Beastlords. If that is true ... " Harvest Moon looks up and scans the terrain as though assessing the fit of her hypothesis. "If that is true, then I think that it is very likely that they have eaten almost all of the game in this area. Or, perhaps there are many other more dangerous or hardy creations of the Beastlords that live about here. Some of these may eat the Great Crabs."
"I have heard that the meat of crabs can be smoked in the same manner as fish. Or it can be preserved in briny waters. But the taste is best when fresh. Once smoked or preserved the flavor is never again the same." With the crab upon its back, Harvest Moon goes about the task of detaching the legs from the main body and then removing the underside, the apron, from the upper shell. As she works, Harvest Moon contemplates the land that such crabs as these might live in. How dangerous must such a place be? What would such a place mean to the League Adventurers? What threats would such a place offer?
"Some crabs have meat within their body as well as within their legs and claws," adds Harvest Moon as she thinks and works. "We shall see which this is. We can scoop the insides from the body shell and place it over the fire. Once filled with water, we can use the shell in which to boil the legs for eating."

DM OOC: Well, wha'dyaknow! You CAN tell the male and female crabs apart. And it's not that hard. You just look at the bottom shell and etc. You can Google it easily enough.
DM IC: It takes several hours of your sleep time (if working together), or all the rest of the night if only one is cleaning the crabs (if Harvest does it, she'll be getting fatigued if she goes the day without rest) but you get enough meat off of them to cook and eat for one day. (DM OOC: this seesm like so little but A: to get more means staying put while smoking it for a day, B: there are six of you chowing down, one is a large minotaur and another is probably a ravenous barbarian... food goes fast. Also, since at least half the total diameter of the body is legs, and not much meat on legs, there's not as much good meat as one would think.)
The two smaller crabs are of the same kind, the larger one is of a different kind. Whether their size is magically augumented or natural there's no way to tell. From Harvests knowledge, crabs will keep growing until they die of old age or eaten. What kind of predators are out in the ocean and what means for the crabs to hide from them is an unknown but have a big effect on how big they can grow. Once past a certain size, not many predators will bother with them.
Reefs and underwater caves harbor and protect zillions of fish and crustaceans. So, they could have gotten this big because there aren't any big predators, or because there are plenty of hidey-holes for them to hide in until they get big enough to make it not worth the predator's time, and limb.

No more crabs are seen and the rest of the night goes by uneventfully. Good thing too, as Peza has a hard time keeping watch through the cooking smoke. :)
Dawn breaks and the group hopes to enjoy a breakfast of crab meat. Peza takes the opportunity to contact Captain Theringer. She gets the impression she caught him trying to swallow some breakfast himself.

The meat of crabs is very delicious. Had this been a time a year or two ago, she might have gorged herself to a groaning discomfort. One's next meal, at that time, had been uncertain. Now, however, amidst that startling plenty of the League Adventurer life, Harvest Moon consumes little more than a judicious meal before bed.
The first fine rays of the morning sun come soon enough, sparking over the great waters of the sea as it rises in the east. Time for chores and supplications. Afterwards, Harvest Moon stands quietly by as Peza speaks into the Telestone. In one hand she holds a long piece of white crab meat upon which she gnaws and munches. It is notable to Harvest Moon that Captain Sal Theringer's first concern is not for an exploration report as has been true in the past. This is good.

Grumbling he gets up and stumbles to the latrine area to take care of his business.

Captain Theringer appears relieved that things are all right. "When you cut me off yesterday, you left me... us, believing something worse had happened! he remarks with a hint of chiding. "Now what's this about a mgical fence? Can you describe your location? Give as much detail as possible as I'll have to pass this on to Sculley and from what you describe, have him figure out if he's still to reach your spot or if he's passed it."
He listens carfully at Peza's description of the area and they can hear him mumbling it back to someone else. When Peza is done he continues.
"Well done. I'll pass this on to Sculley. He should remember an obelisk like that if he's come across it yet. Now, about this magical fence. The description of those obelisks does not fit anthing we know of the Beastlords, but they seem to have a common theme, similar to that pyramid. It would be advantageous to see what lies beyond. It could be the source of those flying beasts that attacked us. See what you can find out about what lies beyond.
"Now for some other important business. I've been concerned about your numbers. I've been working with the other WLA groups here attached to the Fixers and since things have been going so well, one of the groups has offered to release one of their group to come and join you. I've talked to the Catacombs representative that paid you a visit several weeks ago. He's offered to teleport to you and bring the new guy, for a fee, of course. Babbit should show up soon after we are done here. Show your new companion the hospitality and friendship the WLA is known for." This was said in Captain Theringer's usual tone that indicated the addition to their group was not an option.
The Captain pauses for a moment for any further comments from Peza, answers any further questions, then winks out.
Fifteen minutes later Babbit Emberson pops into existence at the foot of the knoll and looks around, not sure he's gotten the right spot, then notices the group. He waves a cheery wave.

Harvest Moon waves to the dwarf, Babbit Emberson of the magical Catacombs tent. Then, after the dwarf has left, from her place near the campfire at the top of the knoll, she observes the one that he has left behind.
He is an elf, this newcomer. He is a full blooded elf. Not half, as is she. This is very interesting. Aside from Torian Silverleaf, there have been few elves about. Curious, but wary by nature, Harvest Moon takes a circuitous path down the slope toward the elf. She approaches from the side, more, though, out of instinct than from caution. The exceedingly short half-elfish girl puffs a breath up at the single lock of long hair that drapes down over one eye, the single lock that arches over her brow from an otherwise shaved head. When it falls back - as it invariably will - to once again partially obscure her vision, she clears it with a hand, tucking it behind one ear. With the other hand she wields a large white piece of crab meat from she takes an absent-minded bite.
"I am Harvest Moon," adds Harvest Moon after Barratore Steelwind's introduction remembers her of the niceties expected here. Then, "Save us from what?" she asks, and the curiosity in her voice speaks to the innocence of her question. But the keen elf-slanted eyes of Harvest Moon then catch the expression of this elf, this Edson Kazil, and the nature of his words come to Harvest Moon. Before he can reply she adds, "Oh. You are jesting." She smiles, and her grin splits her broad half-elfish face. "Though there is great magic here, I think. So you will have many chances soon to save us from these things."

"Yes, that is right, Barratore Steelwind." Harvest Moon's answer is distracted. Her thoughts are elsewhere, and taken to that place by what Barratore Steelwind has just said about Eeoh and Sister Sarah. No. They cannot climb. And so the question. What are they to do in such a case in which they must leave the mules to themselves?
"I think that it would be best to first attempt to go around the fence. If we find nothing, we might then climb in. That is, I think, the most reasonably cautious manner. But ... " An idea then comes to Harvest Moon.
"You are right, Barratore Steelwind. Neither Eeoh nor Sister Sarah can climb, and so must be left behind should we enter the fence. At this time, we must release them to the wild. They are animals, and must, as with all animals, protect and forage for themselves at times. We must release them to be free so that they can do so to their best ability."
"The problem will be in attracting them to return."
At this, Harvest Moon smiles. "But I have an idea." From their limited stores of fresh foods, Harvest Moon selects a delicious fruit. Quietly, she prays for Guidance. Then, with fruit in hand, Harvest Moon calls to the mules using a distinctive whistle.
"If we go into the fence," she explains, as she offers one half of the fruit to Eeoh and the other to Sister Sarah, "we must necessarily release them to the wild. But, when we return, we can, at least, try to attract them to return with this whistle."

Quick camp-cleanup takes place as half the group searches for clues along the beach. The theory is that animal tracks might indicate what the fence is trying to keep out? Following the fence along the beach is pointed out by Harvest that it might be unwise, also considering that any tracks would be in the sand and they've already concluded that sand is not a good record keeper of tracks.
On the other hand some are for going over the fence and exploring the inside. One is even for attempting to dig up a pole and seeing if it would bring the fence down.
Harvest comes up with an ingenius solution to what to do with the two mules if they do go over the fence and Gerox offers his help in that idea. Only way to know how well it will work is to try it, but it certainly is worth a try.
From their camp spot they notice several other obelisks along somewhat of a straight line inland, each pole staying within sight of the other.
So, by the time the heat of the day begins to be felt, the sun blazing down on the group, a momentous decision looms over the group, go over or go around. Will one take the lead and decide, or will there be a democratic decision? What tools do they have to dig with? How deep will they have to go? How much time do they have? What's for lunch?
Probably crab.

I also don't think we should be digging up and disrupting the fences. I think that is a question for the Fixers. The fence could be there for a very important reason and disrupting it without knowing what it might be containing seems foolhardy. I suggest we circle around and hopefully see something. If we don't then maybe send a scouting group to climb the fence and do a recon while the others wait. If your not comfortable splitting the group, we can just wait for our pickup and come back by ship so we don't have animals to protect."
JonathanT (Co-DM) - Over the fence, under the fence, around the fence, which way do we go? Tuesday December 4th, 2012 12:57:27 AM
Digging into the sand along the line of the invisible magical fence shows that the magical effect still exists. Intuition would indicate that the effect probably extends the whole length of the obelisks, however deep they go into the ground.
Intuition would also indicate that cutting a tree down, one wide enough to get the animals safely up, would be quite a task. It is hard enough for a humanoid to ballance along a tree trunk, going up at a steep slope, picture a four-legged animal, with hooves, untrained in that 'art', with animal intelligence, doing it.
The tree would have to be (calculate the length of the hypotenus of the 'triangle') some 40 to 50' tall and it's girth quite wide. Needless to say, there's no such tree in the area that will work.
DM Note: so we don't spend any more valuable time on the Mule subject, assume that Harvest and Gerox's ideas will do the trick. When SteveK and I put this together, we had completely forgotten about the mules. I appologize for that inconvenience and I certainly don't want our oversight to hinder the fun to follow. As DM, I can promise not to send some ravenous monster after the helpless mules.
On the other hand, if two want to roleplay the mules, we can do some side adventures with them. :) Just kidding. It would be fun but I don't have the time. Sigh...

"No." Harvest Moon shakes her head. "We should not break the fence until we know more. Please come. Let us walk around first."
The soft nuzzle of the mules against her palms distracts, for a moment, Harvest Moon from this terrible and tragic idea that others of the League Adventurers are considering.

The pole inside the fence is curious. And yet, it is not so unusual for inner extensions to fences or walls to be created. So, it is not so curious after all. What is indeed curious is that miles and miles of these magic poles can even exist without sign of the peoples who created them. Even within the short span in which Harvest Moon has lived, it has come to her notice that the larger and more impressive a creation is, the more peoples are required to aid in the creation. There seems a connection between the two, mitigated only, perhaps ... by the power of the peoples who do the creation.
"Let me see what can be found from above," says Harvest Moon. And, for the second she climbs one of the poles. This time, however, prompted by misgivings caused by her previous thoughts, Harvest Moon endeavors to climb with stealth. Or, at least in such a way that she cannot be seen from within the fence. This is not so easy. Especially when she reaches her destination and stands upon the very top of the pole, balancing in the heights. She shades her eyes with one hand and gazes out across the landscape to see what she might see. How far do these poles continue? Can she see the other side of the fence?

JonathanT (Co-DM) - Over the fence, under the fence, around the fence, which way do we go? Thursday December 6th, 2012 12:24:44 AM
Of the trip along the magical fence, so far only animal tracks of the normal sort are noticed. Having travelled for half a day, it has not been in a straight, level, line, so the true distance is hard to figure. A good guess is at least 5 miles. The group notices that there is no specific measure of distance between obelisks. They are placed purely by Line-of-Sight. In some cases the distance is a few hundred feet, in others it is a few hundred yards.
Harvest takes the opportunity to climb the obelisk next to them. She finds it easily enought (DC10 is correct) and standing on the flat top (about a 3x3 foot flat square), she stands and looks out. The other obelisk is not all that far away, 100' yards, give or take some, and she sees a few more on past the first one.
She also notices that just as with the magical fence they are following, this 'inner' line has no trees within 20 yards of what she envisions the 'line' of the fence to be. She does see a pond, or what appears to be a body of water large enough to be called a pond, not large enough to be a lake, and what could be animal tracks at the muddy edge. This pond is in the section to her right.
(DM OOC: I picture you guys having travelled East to the coast, the fence being south of your position, so you traveled half a day back West. Harvest climbs the obelisk and faces South as she looks out. The obelisks inside this fence head due South while more continue West.)
All the while the group traveled, there was no sign that there was a break in the fence, or no special looking pair of obelisks to indicate a 'gate'. Although the obelisks themselves are not identical, as each one has different animal effigies or different animal effigy combinations.
Some look for some sort of guardian if such a 'gate' or entrance to the area were to exist other than climbing over. Having spent half a day of travel and this is the first indication of a separate section, Lemick wonders, and rightly so, how big a section is and how many. One just cannot tell yet without going inside.
All you've seen is one side and found a 'corner' marking off the end of one section and beginning of another. But that does not really give any idea of how far inland a wall goes or even if an area is square or irregular in shape. If you assume that an area is a 'square', then a calculated guess would mean each square, however many there are, is about a 5x5 mile area. But you know what happens when you assume stuff. :)
Only definite thing you know is that there is at least two areas and that there might be something alive in the second area.
Peza points out some important details of the Beastlords they've learned so far and her assessment of 'wandering' creatures in these walled areas may be on the spot from what Harvest just observed.
Some of the group are all for going over the fence and letting Gerox speak to Eeoh and Sister Sarah to not wander far from this spot. Brom suggests finding the 'back' side of the area. Of course, that could be several days away, or you could already be there, if there is such a thing.
Now comes the time to decide to either keep along the route you've followed so far or to take the risks of going over the fence and leaving the two mules to their natural instincts (and some suggestions from Gerox). If you go over the fence, which side do you choose, the left side that you've followed this far or the right side where Harvest saw a pond?

The face of Harvest Moon falls into a pout, and her eyes, now cast down, move from here to there as though chasing the solution of a moral dilemma. On the one hand, it would be possible to remain behind and care for Eeoh and Sister Sarah. Together, they could continue on to map the entire outside of the Magic Fence. It would be good to know the territory that it covers before entering. And she would worry for the safety of Eeoh and Sister Sarah. More than she than she would have thought. On the other hand, if Peza is going inside the fence, then so too should she. Should she not? It is not at all unlikely that there will be beasts within the fence. And should she then not be present to guard with Peza?
And atop all of this, there is the matter of invading someone else's territory.

OoC: I started out this morning prepared to write a post in which Harvest Moon acquiesces to the group will and goes along. However, the further I got into the post, the more I came to the conclusion that Harvest, as a lawful character could not justify going over some as of yet unknown person's fence on the grounds of the current pretexts.
Unless someone can come up with some solid reasoning, I'm sort of stuck. And I'm really loathed to just go along with the group by making some weak compromise to principles. So far, I've found no overriding motivation to do an override on Harvest's basic motivations.
Just thought I should put this out in the open for the sake of moving things along faster. And, if you want to go ahead with out her, I'm good. She can have her own little adventure scouting the perimeter with the mules. I'm perfectly happy roleplaying that.

Barratore decides quickly as he is want to do, the quicker the decision is made the quick things can happen and hopefully those things will be exciting. "Harvest is right. We cannot simply go and do whatever we please without reason. We have no good reason to break in."

Gerox hangs limply in Barratore's arms, "Harvest I see your thinking here and I can understand it but let me ask you a few questions. It is very possible we circle this entire fence and not find a gate. Maybe the gate is invisible too? If we do find the gate, what happens if it is closed? We could knock and the owners could be long dead. Dead folks don't usually answer doors and if they do, we have even bigger issues.
We also know that this is most likely a Beastlord's establishment. I don't know if it a home, workplace or what. So far the Beastlords haven't proved to be very friendly. Scully has been attacked by them and Rum was assaulted and people were kidnapped. Do we want to knock on the doors of kidnappers? It might be better to be a bit sneaky now. Yes it is bending courtesy a bit and if we find friendly folks, we can make our apologies but wisdom suggests we want to use some care here. I am not suggesting we steal anything or only protect ourselves if we are attacked.
Also this compound is very large and we are charged by the Fixers and the Captain to explore it and come back with information. We also have a deadline. Scully could be waiting for us now? Are we putting his ship and our ride home in danger if it is just loitering around waiting for us? No I think we need to climb the fence and do a quick recon."
ooc how was that Al?

"I understand your trepidation Harvest, but I do see one bit wrong with your logic. You didn't see the pond from outside, you had to climb the obselisk to see it. If we want to see what's inside, and do that by climbing random obselisks, we are going to waste a lot of time. Me being an elf, I have a lot of time to waste. So again I'll add that I'll follow the majority. Right now it seems two to two, with Brom seeming to go either way.

Not wanting to be in this position, Lemick finds himself as the tie-breaker if we decide to go with the majority. "I'm in favor of going in. We can certainly go inside, but keep the boundary within our sight should we need to exit in a hurry. In terms of meeting a friendly, which we can only hope for, we could say that we were seeking safety from the predators of the land -- such as the giant crabs -- as we cross the terrain."
OOC: A few thoughts. Has anyone actually climbed over and touched the ground on the other side? Or tossed something onto the other side?
Also, I want to make sure I have the correct picture in mind. We currently stand at an intersection of two fenced areas -- essentially we are at the intersection of >< where the left and right sides are encompassed in the fenced area?
If this is the picture, Lemick would like to suggest that silnce we walked along the outside of the both left >, that we now walk on the top, inside of the left >. Thus making a circle (square?) back towards the beach.
