Ugh! an 8! He needed at least a 10 for calm water! Zeoll remains under water, holding his breath and vowing to never swim again.
Splash, splash, who's taking a bath? Wednesday November 14th, 2012 12:16:31 PM
Unable to find anything resembling bouyancy, Zeoll walks and crawls along the steep dropoff into the lagoon and surfaces on the beaches shore.
The crew of the Sea Nymph get back to fishing, but two of them remain on guard duty--their gaze firmly locked on the group.
Meanwhile the children hover at deaths door. Both are badly burned and if not for Bosk's large body blocking of the flame, both would have been turned to ashes.
Zeoll brings over the party staves of curing. He uses each one at least once on each child: 17 healing to the girl, and 16 healing to the boy. If they are still damaged, as seems likely, he'll use each staff another time: 20 hp to the girl and 16 to the boy.

My sincerest apologies - DM Jim C Wednesday November 14th, 2012 7:14:32 PM
My posting frequency has been crap ever since I got sick a while back and I'm hoping it will get back on track. My workload has increased and I'm just dogtired at the end of the day, mentally, so I've been putting off what I think could be possibly crappy posts from me, but I'm aiming to change that. I guess the discussion about the DM migration is kicking me into gear cause it looks like I'll be moving on to another game and I don't want this game to end on a whimper, more of a bang. So please hang in there with me and please forgive my unexcused absences.

Bosk nods in agreement as he tends the children. I agree that finding a way to get the dragon's attention is our best bet as it seems he has some attachment to the goldfish, but I am at a loss as to how to relay the information to him. Restlin, did you happen to see the way to his cave...lair...wherever it was that he brought you? I'm honestly surprised he didn't see the fireball or witness the goldfish getting caught. I kind of assumed he would be keeping a close eye on us, just in case we were as unscrupulous as these folk. In the meantime, I think we should consider spreading out a little, so that we are less able to be wiped out by a single fireball, and someone should lead the children farther away from the range of that wand.

Zane sits down amung the volcanic rock formation and takes a moment to meditate, it's time to decide of his fate. His friends need protection, the children are in mortal peril and that damn dragon is holding the group responsible for a gold fish, which has to be more than that. Maybe it's another dragon that's been cursed or something, turned into a fish to live it's life as punishment or something.... Oooooohhhhhmmmmmmm........
After just a couple moments, a smile appears on Zane's face, they're gonna resend a hook into the water, what if they hook a minotaur, rather than the fish....

Another hook in the water Friday November 16th, 2012 12:14:58 PM
Just as some had thought, the winch operator--muttering to himself about something, attaches a new fastener to the end of the winch line, making it ready to be secured to another line if there's a bite.
As seconds pass, no bite comes.
Down below the giant goldfish trails a long fishing line attached to a winch line that's been cut. If it snags on something, it could rip the hook out of the fish, or worse, tangle the fish in it's own line--possibly killing it eventually.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:23/16/16 HP: 62/62 CMD = 23 (hero point spent) Friday November 16th, 2012 7:25:03 PM There is a 50/50 chance that I could disable it before they kill me... but there isn't much way of me avoiding the being killed part. Even invisible they would spot the water dripping off me. And the second they notice the winch disabled the would firebomb the children again on the assumption it was one of us. We learned from the last sabotage that they don't care about killing the guilty person, they will firebomb anyone they see within range.
What we really need to do is to talk to this fish, but that would probably require catching the fish first unless we had magic that could... that's it! The blessing of the edge would allow us to talk to the fish's spirit. We could ask the fish what bait to use to lure it, or how to scare it away from the boat. We can probably get enough info during the conversation that we can find a way to save the fish without looking like we are obstructing the fishermen. If only we knew the fishes name we could talk to it much longer.

Bosk cocks an eyebrow, why would a fish have a name. Suddenly the synapses in his brain shoot into overdrive as he concocts what is sure to be either an absurd idea or an epiphany bordering on divine revelation.
Two by two, hands of blue......I fight for true love, scoundrel!...a bounty on a goldfish....
Thwack!!! Bosk slaps his hand hard upside head. I might be a little slow on the uptake today, and I understand if Restlin cannot confirm this, but I just thought of something, what if that goldfish is not really a goldfish! What if it is really another dragon!!!
Think about it, Two by two, hands of blue......I fight for true love, scoundrel!...someone placing a bounty on a goldfish!!!
If I am right Beri and I can use our wonder twin rings to change into something water breathing and call to the "fish", since he knows how to speak dragon, and I have remove curse prepared and can hopefully undo whatever is keeping her changed into a fish!!!
ooc: I hope I am not the only one to have completely overlooked this possibility for so long. I am feeling really, really, really stupid at the moment despite coming to this revelation.

Thank Gargul I prepared Dispel Magic today as well, and that I didn't use that spell to heal anyone. Luck has been on our side tonight. Mr. Jim, here's the text of the gift Restlin was given:
Each of the party members now can do either one of these options, whenever they want.
They can read the spirit of any one creature, once. If they know the creatures real name, the duration of the conversation is much extended. The questions will be answered by the spirit in a neutral manner, despite the alignment of the creature and ones weakness can be discovered as well as other things, but the spirits knowledge is limited to what the creature being read would know normally. (Six rounds or six minutes if the creatures true name is known.)
OR
The characters spirit will transcend their body and travel to The Edge in a flash of an instant. There, they can over look the cosmos of time and balance and ask any one question, as profound or mundane as they desire and receive an immediate answer, that is as correct as possible, depending on how the question was asked.
I'm using option 1. Let me know how you'd like to handle things.

"If you're able to get under the water and make that happen, or at least keep the fish safe, do it. It's dangerous, of course. That fish will probably try to eat you. Maybe Zane should go. He's good underwater...wait, where's Zane?"
Restlin looks around, but can't find him. "How does a 20' tall minotaur just vanish? What sorcery is this?"
The wizard casts prestidigitation & does something wholly out of character: he makes Bosk and Beri smell bad. "Maybe you won't get eaten if you're unappetizing. Zeoll, let's move these kids."

It may not be as suicidal as you think. He responds to Beri. We have the sound of the waves covering our voices a bit, and my words will be didficult for them to hear if I am under water...and I don't think fireballs will be as effective under water. OOC: Dispel Magic with hero points boosting it could do it!
Bonus: If used before a roll is made, a hero point grants you a +8 luck bonus to any one d20 roll. If used after a roll is made, this bonus is reduced to +4. You can use a hero point to grant this bonus to another character, as long as you are in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check). Hero points spent to aid another character grant only half the listed bonus (+4 before the roll, +2 after the roll).
If say four of us go with Bosk to help, and we all use a hero point in the attempt, we get a +24 luck bonus on the dispel roll. Maybe we can use the swan boat to get out there? Zeoll can't swim, that's for sure!

Restlin ponders. "Well, if there's only one affliction to dispel it just might work. Worst case scenario, other than an agonizing death in the belly of the Goldfish, is that it doesn't work and we seek out more powerful magic. Let's do it..."
He produces the swan boat tokens. "No sense drowning our liontaur."

A few stray bubbles escape the corner of Zane's mouth as he continues to swim. He'll have to come up for air soon, but in the lantern light of the fishing boat above, he makes out the faint outline of the huge goldfish--laying near the bottom of the lagoon, still. It's gills moving, but the hook stuck in it's mouth and the line it's connected to is securely snagged in a nearby coral outcropping, things do not look good for the fish.

He casts Message to be able to whisper to all his friends. He casts Speak with Animals just in case. He does not see Zane anywhere, so he keeps his eyes peeled ... if he sees him (up to 170 ft away) he'll cast another Message to get in touch.

The goldfish does not stir while he does this, but once he is done, she stares on him long and hard and then with a swish of her tail, swims off, buffeting Zane slightly in her wake. Speaking in a low voice he says Guys, I see him. Please bestow whatever boons and words of encouragement you have on me as I cast this spell. I have no way of knowing how powerful the person who cast this spell was, but I could use all the help I can get.
ooc: To be fair I wanted to ask for help before rolling my caster level check. I will use a hero point, but if anyone else could spare a Hero Point for a bonus I would appreciate it. [b][i]Bonus: If used before a roll is made, a hero point grants you a +8 luck bonus to any one d20 roll.

Invisible tendrils of energy stream into Bosk from his companions as he invokes the spell that will hopefully dispel the supposed cursed magic on the goldfish. In a flash, the world is turned upside down. Bosk is buffeted by a sudden water wave so fierce it throws him reeling back into the coral wall of the lagoon and darkness threatens to enshroud his mind.

Also, make a DC20 Will save or be knocked unconscious for 3 rounds and begin drowning.
Those on the shore and in the fishing boat, see an enormous dragon explode from the lagoons bowels, sending a torrent of sea water high into the air and then raining down on all those in the area with a heavy pelting of both water and sealife.
Flapping it's leathery wings until it crested the height of the 50' atoll walls, the breaking light of dawn shone warmly on the golden scales of the dragon, all 100' of her. Crumbling under her weight, the edge of the atoll barely held as she landed on it and howled at the fishing boat--All aboard abandoned ship. Even those on shore felt the unbearable urge to flee.
Everyone except Bosk, please make a DC30 Will save or become Shaken
Taking in another huge breath, the dragon cranes it's long neck upward and breaths fire far into the sky above, lighting up the entire area like a beacon of terrible power.
When she lowers her gaze, it becomes locked on the group on the shore. Her piercing eyes see through all of you as she decides what your fate is to be.

The cleric can feel himself slipping into the oblivion and he begins to pray that the others can rescue him before....My father would be ashamed, giving in and hoping an elf is willing to face the dangers that did this to me so that he could come to my rescue. Suddenly Bosk draws upon the last of his power and opens his eyes. Spitting the blood from his mouth he looks for Beri and swims to shore with him (towing him if necessary) towards his companions.
It isn't until he is swimming back to shore that he spots the dragon, who must have left the water as he struggled for consciousness. He has no idea what is going on until he hears Restlin addressing the dragon. WHOO!!! WE DID IT GUYS!!! I COULD NEVER HAVE BROKEN THAT SPELL WITH OUT YOU!!! Bosk yells out to the group out of instinct. The adrenalin coursing through his veins, the excitement of having broken such powerful spell, the need to to give credit where it was due after a sub-par performance on his part, and the hope that it will help the dragon separate friend from foe, but the reasoning is subconscious the truth is Bosk is filled with pride, honor, and relief that they are all still alive.

Shortly after being shaken by the dragon Beriothian finds himself struggling to move himself through the water, but a force more powerful than drags his body away. Could it be that one of Gargul's servants has come for him at last? As the elf gets his bearing he realizes that it is indeed true, an emotionally charged Bosk has grabbed the elf and is pulling him to shore despite the fact that in mer-form Beri could be blind folded and half drunk and still swim through all but the roughest waters... though at the moment the elf does indeed get that queezey drunk feeling as his body toed along.
*cough* Ehh... thanks Bosk. I don't know what I would have done there without your help. No, no need to help me further. I can walk, see I have legs again. Look, there's Restlin. I think he wants to congratulate you!

"So you have my little darling," the grand lady brushes her neck up against his like lions would when they greet each other. "It would seem you had some help," motioning over to the Iron Adventurers.
Finn nods, "Yes grandmother, it looks like they were able to help sooner than later." Finn nods to the group and is about to say, before he is interrupted by his grandmother.
"Be sure to reward them appropriately, don't be cheap."
"Of course not, grandma!"
"Umhm, alright then, I'm off to check my home and see what that bastard took." Looking back to the Iron Adventurers, "You have my thanks," then the grand lady lifts off and heads East.
"I shall return in an hour with your reward. You there, Restlin, hop on, you shall have your reward by your own hand. Come." The dragon lowers his neck for Restlin to climb on.

Bosk looks with awe upon the dragon as it approaches, taking in the majesty of Gargul's handy work and upon learning they are related wonders at the marvels even further. Gargul created the chromatic dragons and with them nearly defeated Alemi, creator of the metallic dragons. Now the gods have a more harmonious relationship as do these dragons. It never ceases to amaze the cleric how the natural world seemed to mirror the heavens of its own accord. The signs of the gods re everywhere if one knows where to look for them. Everything seems to align as the dawn breaks and the shadows of the day grow out of the dark of the night, the cleric of Gargul's traditional time of prayer and meditation.
Bosk listens as the dragons converse and is a bit jealous that Restlin gets the opportunity to ride on the back of such a magnificent creature, and he wonders what the dragon's cave looks like. Are there hoards of treasure on the ground as in the story the halflings tell, or perhaps chromatic and metallic dragons caves are as different as Gargul and Alemi themselves are.
As the dragons take flight Bosk checks to make sure the sailors are not about to cause any trouble, although he assumes they will be jumping back on their boat and sailing away before the dragons decide to be less merciful, and heals himself and any group members that need it before beginning his daily devotional. In order to keep the children close by and out of trouble he takes out some more rations and drinks for the group to share.
(Assuming the coast is clear) The cleric turns towards the liontaur and says, Zeoll, I lost track, did you need me to charge any of those staves as I ask for Gargul's blessing? Remembering how dirty the weapons that harpooned him were, he makes sure to prepare a remove disease to cast on himself as a precaution. During his meditation he thanks Gargul for inspiring him to prepare dispel magic and remove curse for the day and reflects on the luck he had of having won the foil wrapped balls of water breathing that they used to get the kids out of the cave and the magic rings he and Beri won that allowed them to take on merform in order to find and free the goldfish. Items they only had by the luck of the gods. Then to see the dragons up close and to earn a reward above what they were offered for finding Toby, this truly has been a blessed day. With a little luck he might be able to use the reward money to buy a wooden stylus made of the wood of the Ishgara Tree. Perhaps Alistair knowns how to go about finding one.

Burn the land, boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me. Wednesday December 5th, 2012 12:14:54 PM
Flying high into the sky, the blue dragon dives and turns and spins--sending Restlin into a state of wonderful delirium, if you could call it that. It is a thrilling ride as the pair approach a series of small islands and the dragon lands on the center one. Walking his way into his cave, Restlin sees the familiar sight of his lair, strewn with gold, and many other objects. Lowering his head to let his rider off, the dragon explains the details of his reward for Restlin. "You'll put on this blind-fold, then the first thing you touch with the point of your finger, is yours. Good luck." Doing as he said, Restlin sets out on his quest to find something good. "You can use your foot to feel around, but if you touch it with your hand, it's yours. Watch out for that dead fish I caught awhile ago."
Satisfied he may be onto something, Restlin reaches down and touches soemthing cool to the touch and then grasps it by the hilt. Lifting it from the floor of the lair and taking off his blindfold, he sees he's holding a shortsword as black as night. "Ah, so it looks like you've chosen the Gloom blade, interesting. May it bring you much luck in the future young mage."
Grabbing a chest full of gold, Finn motions for Restlin to climb back on, and then the pair leave the dragon's lair and head back to the group.
About an hour passes and the sun has risen when Restlin and the dragon land at the small atoll. During that time everyone has prayed and studied for their spells and kept a close eye on the fisherman as they reboard their ship and set sail--under a watchful gaze of the group, back out into open waters.
Dismounting, Restlin feels a strong sense of accomplishment as he and the others are bid farewell by the dragon. "I thank you for your assistance in releasing my Nana. I hope this reward in some part relays my gratitude for what you've done. If we should meet again, I might kill you, don't take it personally. Thank you and good journeys!"
Finn the blue dragon launches himself into the air and heads Eastward, the direction his grandmother had gone, leaving the group an unlocked chest filled with 60,000gp.

"What a jerk," he thinks as the dragon fades in the distance. The wizard turns to face his friends. "New rule! Until we can take one in a fight, the Iron Adventurers do not meddle in the affairs of dragons. Zeoll, write it down somewhere."
He walks over to Beri & hands him the Gloom Blade. "Here, take this before I accidentally chop someone's arm off with it. It cuts stuff better when it's dark out. Seems appropriate for you."
(OOC: Knowledge, Arcana: 31 to know what that blade is)
Despite the fact that he died horribly and the fact that the children they rescued from hypothermia and starvation are mostly ingrates, Restlin is pleased with the situation. ADM James Two levels a year is an average target, but it varies from games to game (some are significantly slower than ours). Part of it was the timing of when you joined. I gained a level right around that time. I have leveled twice in 18 months and am about 2/3 the way to my 3rd level up. The Hook City campaign is also a wealthier campaign. Bosk laughs at Restlin's new found energy, but his face turns dead serious when he mentions not seeing Gimp the Imp. It is Gimp's job guides souls safely to receive their judgement, it is a bad omen if he wasn't there to greet you. You must have offended the gods and been found unworthy and destined to wander the land of the dead for all eternity. The cleric pauses a moment before giving a large grin. Or it could be that Gargul knows when people are destined to live and to die and he knew that it wasn't your time yet. I imagine he also gives people a little time to mentally process what just happened and time enough to realize what the odds of their returning to life are. Gargul might know your destine, but people are stubborn and will refuse to go with him if they feel they may resurrected soon and it is not worth Gimps time arguing with those people.
At the mention of food Bosk glares at Toby. I just gave you a taur sized ration, that should be enough to feed four kids your size. Then, as the kid eyes the treasure Bosk says to the group, What to you say I put our reward in my bag of holding? I might be built like an ox, but I don't relish the idea of carrying that heavy thing around or risking it falling overboard if the water is rough on our way back.

Wyaar (JonL) AC 27/17/22 CMD 23 HP 62/62 Saturday December 8th, 2012 9:11:43 AM
Wyaar can carry a hundred pounds of the gold if needed... but offers the suggestion that it might be best to just leave it all in the chest and carry it as a team. He doubts anyone on the ship will try to steal it from them and if they do they'll soon decide against it.
"it's possible the old shop keep was looking to remove the curse as well, but I agree we should have it looked in to. Though I have the feeling that when we return the old man will be long gone."
Bosk AC: 30/14/27 CMD:23 HP 64 of 64 Spells Saturday December 8th, 2012 10:35:35 AM
Bosk smiles, still out of Toby's hearing, It is not the sailors on the ship I do not trust. Besides, that chest carried 1,000 lbs of gold, it is a nice chest and you never know when it will come in handy. My bag of holding holds 1,000 lbs, so I can carry the chest and most of my stuff with a little rearranging (my load is currentlt light). If I need to I can dump out my water and rearrange a few things I just prefer to keep things out of sight and avoid tempting others in the first place. I also know there are a few among us that cannot carry their share.
ooc: This is assuming Bosk found nothing on the shipwrecks to fill his bag with. I believe Bosk can carry everything, but from a realistic standpoint I like to minimize weight keep large items like ladders and anvils in nondimesional spaces.
Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 17/14/15 CMD: 15 HP: 31/50 (Spells) Saturday December 8th, 2012 1:36:30 PM
Restlin ponders. "How long, Zeoll? I'm thinking we get him home, clean him up, get him in bed and make him sleep...I can handle that...then we make him forget & let his parents wake him & declare it was all a dream. I mean, goldfish turning into dragons? He needs to stop hanging out with crazy old men."
Toby --Jim C Saturday December 8th, 2012 4:08:22 PM "You know I can hear you, right?!" Toby was not at all thrilled with the idea of being magically manipulated, but then again, Toby didn't like much of anything.
The captain and his crew help stow what the group has, namely the chest--since nothing else was found on the other wrecks other than waterlogged and unserviceable mundane items--there didn't seem to be any corpses left either.
The trip back to Hook City is uneventful and it's almost hard to relax cause of all the gold onboard and the likelihood of pirates--which are unheard of in this area, always spring to mind. But the journey was peaceful and the kids quiet. When you arrive at the docks, the captain orders his crew to help unload the groups goods. Some of you think that it would be a very wise idea to hide the gold or not speak of it in such an environment.
Now that you're back in Hook City, Labortown at least, what are you going to do with Toby and Rachel? Any other actions you wish to take before I start the next module?
