Late post...this holiday has my internal clock and schedule all fouled up.

These fumes are no joke. Several stalwart dwarves are already on their way to the lands of rest.

Thankfully, there are enough who are still able to keep it together & help shuffle everyone out. Several minutes are spent breathing in the cleaner air; the stuffy confines and stinking evil of the necromancer's den never smelled quite so good.

"Whew! If you wanted a snack, you could have just opened the vat. No need to go making a mess," comes Brann's familiar grating voice. "Really, you are guests here. You could at least have waited until I was back with my snack before killing those golems. The necromancers spent a lot of time making those. You should at least leave them a note explaining what happened..."

Back in the tunnels, there are still several places the party hasn't explored, but where to start?

***

Survival checks (aid another is appropriate here) to see if you can figure where to go, please.

The fatigued condition will dissipate quickly once you can breath again. Ignore the standard 8 hours of rest required.

I'd love a snack! Freshly boiled Imp legs with a side of yer face as the boiling pot. Shinto is obviously too enraged to help Oathbreaker track anything at the moment.

Shonti watches on as his brother and Kyachi tear apart the last of the Flesh Golems, trying to hold his breath until he can escape the room. Unfortunately enough for him, a piece of flesh from the golem smacks him right in the mouth as Kyachi's claws rip it up and send small chunks flying different directions. He gasps as it connects with his lips, and draws in a breath of the horrid fumes from the embalming fluid as the bit of flesh falls from his face.

Not able to hold his breath anymore after getting a whif of the fumes, Shonti begins hacking and coughing immediately after smelling the foul stuff. Once the Golems are torn apart, Shonti does his best to get out of the room as fast as he possibly can, almost coughing up a lung along the way...

Once out of the room, Shonti spends a minute or a few regaining his composure from the foul smelling fluids leaked from the busted vat. He then begins trying to aid the Oathbreaker in any way that he can once he returns to tracking the footprints of our enemies.

Recovery from the fumes of the embalming fluid comes quickly once the dwarves are out of the immediate area. There's a lingering smell, especially from Shinto since he's drenched in the stuff.

Shinto's throat is raw. His eyes feel dry against his lids and blinking is painful. Still, he's a Zarbadium & therefor full of harsh words for the party's demonic mascot. Shonti does his best to calm the mad rantings. Shinto's wounds are still painless. Alarmingly, the flesh around them is starting to toughen. Parts of the dwarf seem to be embalming before his eyes.

No actual negatives for Shinto, but feel free to RP up the discomfort until the stuff is somehow removed.

The wave of healing from Terser closes a few wounds and soothes the inflammed membranes of those suffering from formaldehyde exposure. Even Shinto gets a moment's respite.

Sam comforts and aids those around him while reining in his hyena. It's a good thing he's cute, cause he sure is a handful.

Dernock received the worst of it all, it seems. The double whammy of mutilated dwarves and formaldehyde fumes means the dwarf if still reeling. Still, he's out of there now & can pull himself together when he feels up to it.

While the party recovers, Oathbreaker and Devlin are at work figuring out their next move. Oathbreaker is looking for tracks when he realizes something important: those vats had to get in there somehow. Taking a figurative step back, he's able to track the movements of those large vats through a nearby tunnel. Hopefully he can trace them back to their origin.

Putting the last encounter behind them, everyone sets off behind an oddly uplifted Oathbreaker. The dwarf's hunch proves correct & he is soon able to see the movement through the tunnels.

Luckily for all involved, the trip is short and uneventful. Finally, a quick peek around the corner shows our heroes have found something.

Before them is an impressive laboratory. Numerous surgical gurneys and alchemical reagents can be seen; it's almost possible to forget you're in a cavern. Gone is the stale air of the tunnels or the powerful fumes from the vats. Someone takes this place very seriously. Several notebooks can be seen at several stations. It would take weeks to go through all of them.

A tickling sensation manifests in Sam's head. Instinctivly turning, he sees them: 3 large pentagrams burned into the stone floor. They're easy to miss, but not for Sam. For him they glow & fill him with a sense of inner dread and fears of imprisonment. Even without the reaction, they speak of something more than simple experimentation.

Fear and curiosity fill Sam's heart at the same time. His head swims with questions and possible answers for them. He climbs off Chuckles and walks to the area with the pentagrams. Chuckles follows as he kneels at the spot. As Sam stares at the glowing symbols, his eyes lose focus and the images blur. His mind goes back to the dwarves in the tanks and also the one imprisoned in DrakesMeade.

"I should...I mean we..."

Sam falls to a sitting position as the images return to a clearer view. He digs into the recesses of his mind.

Shonti looks around for any other entrances to the room before he walks between a couple of the stations, and begins flipping quickly through the notebooks. He is looking for information about the Demon Child, it's creation, the Flesh Golems, their creation, and trying to figure out what exactly was going on in this room, and what magics were used. Looking up from the notebook, he says to the group, "Watch the doors lads, Shinto you take that one." He manages only to scratch at them a few times before the team finally walks into the laboratory. The partly embalmed dwarf takes a good look around while keeping close to his brother, T's gotta be where them Golems were made... Against all goodness of the Wold...

Shinto is obviously getting angry, as he grips his ax in two hands, following his brother over to the station,
he looses his focus.

Careful ye don't break anything, if someone went ta this much trouble ta make this place, they will probably know when it is disturbed. He hears Dernock say,

Standing next to Shonti as he flips through a notebook or two, Shinto eyes a station with mostly breakable objects, runs and sweeps his ax across the table. Shattering whatever alchemy reagents, vials or instruments he possibly can in one swing.

Sweat pours from the dwarves head now, the discomfort of the fluids and wounds and words of his brethren have obviously fueled his anger. He breaths deeply as he turns from the debris he'd created,

DM Carl  d100=70 ;

Terser begins his search for magic in the lab. There's an entirely unsurprising amount of necromancy residue here. With his spell, he's also able to see the pentagrams carved into the floor. It's not a stretch to believe someone's been conjuring and binding demons here.

Oathbreaker's all-seeing eyes flit about the room as he thumbs through lab manuals. Say what you want about these necromancers; they run a tight ship. The manuals are so dry and clinical that it's almost possible to ignore the horrors contained inside. Almost. He spies one that seems different. It's a different shade of brown, but only barely. Peering inside, he sees it's written in a language he doesn't know. Just looking at the characters fills him with dread, however. Whatever language this is, it's loathsome.

Devlin moves about unseen. He manifests just enough to throw a word of caution to his companions before melding back into the shadows. He checks for other entrances and finds none. He settles down to guard against anything coming after them.

Bruagh leaves the investigation to the others. He stands ready to protect his friends.

Sam has an unexpected reaction as he sits amoung the pentagrams he too comes to the conclusion that demons were bound here. He remains calm, though something inside him fumes. "Those who would use us as tools in this life always pay in the next...but you learned that already, didn't you?" The voice is familiar and unwelcome as always.

Shonti does indeed find evidence of flesh golem creation. The dead were brough back to life here as well, but none of that is very surprising. He examines the log books with an eye trained in the arcane to figure out just what's going on here. The logs are full of notes about experiments, but don't much mention why they're doing what they're doing. As far as he can tell, these necromancers were trying to create something new. There are several experiments that involve heating flesh samples & cutting into them to measure an increase in toughness. Do the pieces start to fall together for the young sorcerer? Maybe...

Sarnak and Kyachi both join Bruagh in guard duty. Perhaps the sight of Bruagh's untouchable armor and Kyachi's wicked natural weapons will give their enemies enough pause to finish their investigation.

Dernock attempts to rouse Sam to no avail. He must be in one of his moods again.

All in all, a very low key investigation...until Shinto decides enough is enough. A fantastic cacophany of glass erupts as Shinto breaks apart a station full of unknown chemicals. The mess is the least of everyone's worries as several chemicals mix and begin to react. Luckily, an acrid smoke seems to be the only immediate result (die roller likes you guys today). The dwarf's cries end any and all hopes they could have that they're unnoticed...but no one comes rushing out to attack. There's an odd lack of necromancers in this necromancers' lair...

Calls come to grab the notes and fly away from this place before their good luck runs out, but is it already too late?

(To the group) "I need to read any documents we find here. Something about this place seems familiar to me."

Sam brushes Terser off as the dwarf attempts to carry him. He obsessively and madly thumbs through any document he can get his hands on. As he does so, the words coming from the all too familiar, unnamed voice from within, echo in the gnome's mind.

"What does this have to do with me...if anything?"

DM Carl  d100=23 ;

Smash up the lab? Sounds like a plan to our dwarves!

After Terser gets the ball rolling with a sound burst that does indeed shatter several glass jars, the party looks to do more damage. At Shonti's direction, several vials full of rare alchemical reagents are destroyed and delicate lab equipment is thrown to the ground. It's likely the most fun any of you have had in a long time.

Shonti does keep an eye out for anything magical, but nothing jumps out. Some of the reagents radiate faint magic, but they're in puddles on the floor now.

When the hubbub dies down a faint laughter can be heard before it erupts into a full-on cackle. "HaHA! Excellent! Break that over there too, that green stuff in the vial. It took that pompous know-it-all weeks to secure it! SMASH IT!" comes Brann's voice from..somewhere. "I'm going to miss you all terribly when you're gone. I'll enjoy watching you die, but life won't be as fun after you're all gone."

The imp sighs wistfully before continuing, "anyway, the necromancers aren't here. I'm pretty sure I told you that when you stupid dwarves got here...or did I? I meant to...hard to say either way. Feel free to make yourselves comfortable until they get back. It's not like there are more undead wandering around, and I'm sure those necromancers aren't out in the Scab doing anything tooooo evil. Probably just picking up something nice for supper."

Meanwhile, chemicals pool together in the Wold's most random and unscientific experiment ever. Be it fate or misfortune, a combination of reagents meets an unremarkable lichen on the laboratory floor and within seconds it starts to bloom. The lichen starts to grow at the rate of about 2" per second before it absorbs even more of the chemicals and really gets moving. In what seems like no time at all, it starts growing outwards and upwards, forming a mound 5' tall and 7' around. By the looks of things, it has no intention of stopping...

Having done enough damage for one day, the party carefully makes their way out of the necromancer's lair and down the cliff face. Oathbreaker is, of course, easily able to find his own tracks heading back. It's a good thing too; the Scab is still a difficult place to navigate through. It would have been plenty easy to take a wrong tunnel somewhere and end up in a fire giant's cooking pot.

It's still a long journey, however. After a day filled with combat and stress, as well as the difficulty in traversing the Scab's treacherous terrain, the party reaches a point where they'll need to rest or start suffering the consequences. Should they decide to stop, Oathbreaker can fairly easily spot out a comfortable, out of the way spot to do so.

Most of them are extraordinarily uninteresting. Study being 99% perspiration, the necromancers meticulously logged thousands of failed experiments that shed little insight into what they were doing. One thing that is noteworthy is that all experimentation stopped cold 3 days ago. The party settles into their routine of resting, watching, and crafting...

Over to the side, however, Sam and The Oathbreaker meet about a book that was found in the lab. Sitting by himself, Sam cracks open the book and is hit square in the face by a language he likely wishes he couldn't read: abyssal. The characters dance violently before him, but his eyes take them in nonetheless.

As he reads, he's very aware of the fact that the voice in his head is not his own. It's as if his passenger is reading aloud to him.

Unlike the dry laboratory notes, this appears to be a journal of sorts. There's a lot to read; Sam is able to get a great deal of information. Whomever wrote it was a drow, and a whiny one at that. There are several pages of him complaining about leadership decisions, making Sam think this was obviously a low member on the totem pole.

Sam is able to piece together the following story:

The group of necromancers is lead by another drow named Sezarius. Together, they work for Fhorge, the old power at the heart of The Scab, to create an undead that will not only resist extreme heat, but thrive in it. The bodies floating in the vats are their failures, and no mention of why they work so tirelessly on it is noted.

The last entry is particularly noteworthy:

We leave tomorrow. Sezarius finally decided to listen to me when I said chasing after that boy was a waste of time when another could be seized easily enough. Indeed, those duergar make excellent spies so long as you can stand the smell of them. Their terms were curious, but agreeable. They've spotted a handful of pregnant dwarves living around the outer periphery of the newly recaptured Drakesmeade that should be easy enough to spirit away with. We could be in and out within an hour with them were it not for that blasted Lila.

I don't know what she has on Sezarius, but it must be good. Unfortunately for us, that means we get to stick our necks out. This Tahni better be worth all the trouble we're about to go through to abduct her...

The entry is dated two days ago.

(Well...that was confusing...)

As Sam reads about the fate in store for Tahni and the women of Drakesmeade, plans are drawn up. Do they wake Bruagh? He won't be happy, sure...but not waking him when Tahni is about to be kidnapped? That seems like a bad idea.

Kyachi decides Sarnak should be awake for this. The summoner calls forth a small Archon & asks for it's assistance, but the only response is a shudder as the thing's light dims. It seems it wants to help, but can't.

From the SRD under Summon Monster: A summoned monster cannot summon or otherwise conjure another creature, nor can it use any teleportation or planar travel abilities.

Shinto is up, it seems, as are Terser and Shonti, all eager to get moving. Heroes don't sleep while their friends are in danger, right?

Dernock sleeps restlessly; perhaps he realizes not all is right in The Wold. Regardless, his snores are louder than Raeb's & sleeping within 30' of him proves challenging.

Bruagh still seems unaware. Surely someone should tell the paladin what's going on.

(Let's clarify the time frame as I see it. Sam and Tag read the book during the first watch. So people were asleep or getting there. Sarnak was likely crafting before bedtime. Due to what was learned, Bruagh was woken and he took off with the rest of the party in tow.

That means there was no full rest for the party. Casters that must prepare their spells in advance haven't been able to do so. As for Sarnak, he should be ready to go again come morning. I can't find anything in the APG about what's needed for summoners to regain spells. For a Paizo product, they sure cut a bunch of corners. Anyway, in an effort to keep this thing moving, Sarnak gets his spells back in the morning, but as of right this second he's still on the same day as before.)

This is no time to sleep. With evil afoot and Tahni in danger Bruagh isn't putting off his return to Drakesmeade and trusts the rest of the party to catch up. Raeb seems to share his rider's anger for reasons the bear likely doesn't understand.

The lantern archon brightens again at the request for aid. There's not much it can do, but it shines brightly enough that everyone's able to shake off the mental cobwebs a bit easier. Kyachi reappears sooner than expected.

Camp is broken quickly as the party makes their way back to the lava tubes. Opinions are bandied about regarding the nature of the necromancer's experiments. Maybe they're right, but no one here is an expert in necromancy.

Even at the brisk pace it takes a few hours to reach the entrance to the lava tubes. Astute dwarves again notice the air shift as the tubes change direction for the newcomers. The remains of the rock trolls are still present, though it looks as it they're already falling apart & turning back into dust. There will be nothing left of the beasts within a few days. Good riddance...

The trip through the tubes is uneventful as before. In fact, it's a bit too relaxing. It's not long before eyes start getting heavy.

Fort save DC10 to stay awake through the trip.

Everyone is pleased to see the webbing still intact. Those who get stuck have to problem getting loose w/ help from their fellow dwarves (no need to roll this time as there's no immediate danger).

A scant hour after exiting the tubes, the party finds itself within sight of Drakesmeade. It's very early in the morning still and there's few signs of activity. Things seem just as peaceful as they were when the party left a few days prior...

ooc-Happy Holidays Forged Team!

I won some gifts that I'm gifting to my buddies:

For Taggart-a sizeable brown leather pouch containing a double-sized batch of marbles that are all the colors of the rainbow.

For firing arrows at the bomb to knock it away from Sam. Use them to play games or to trip people.

For Shinto-weighs thirty pounds!--is a plain khaki-colored canvas six-inch cube with a large red dot on one of its sides and a piece of parchment with instructions on "How to Use Your Woldco Pop-Up Tent for Two." Just press the red dot and the cube will instantly pop up into a tent large enough to hold two people. Pressing the dot again (located on the outer tent pole after set-up) will instantly pop the tent into its cube form again. WARNING: Please make sure the tent is dry when popping it down, and do NOT leave anything inside the tent that will not survive getting magically-squished into a six-inch cube. (Note: other than instantaneously setting itself up and packing itself up again, this is otherwise a normal two-person tent. The setup process includes driving its own anchor stakes into the ground, but the terrain must be conducive to setting up a regular tent in order to do so.)

Here's shelter for sheltering Sam from the bomb blast! Sleep in it and stay out of the elements.

For Bruagh, Devlin, Dernock, Sarnak, Terser, and Shonti-A bundle of six orange candles--they are Insectbane candles

Return to Drakesmeade - DM RobC
Monday December 10th, 2012 12:10:04 AM

The party set off at a cracking pace to get to Drakesmeade as quickly as possible. Few words are shared as all energy is spent to just keep moving.

The approach to Drakesmeade seems completely normal. The gates are opened to allow you entry, lots of friendly smiles and waves. Nothing amiss at all. If the necros have infiltrated the fortress, noone here is any the wiser.

The party make their way through the fortress towards the infirmary. If Tahni would be anywhere it is likely she would still be tending any wounded. There are significantly fewer patients in the infirmary now as the healers have obviously been hard at work. Tally notices the party enter and approaches to greet you. His smile drops as he senses something is obviously not right.

"Tahni? Why, she and I are helping to transport the remaining refugees from Mountainburrow to here. She left shortly after you did." he seems to be getting worried too and pauses to restart "She and the caravans made for Mountainburrow shortly after you left. They should be on their way back now though."

The elf notes the tiredness and discomfort many are feeling as he reaches out to touch each of you on the shoulder in turn. Any weariness you had been feeling rapidly fades away. He also says a few words of prayer in elvish for Bruagh, Raeb and Dernock. The wounds that had previously failed to heal now vanish (Tally's touch has removed fatigue/exhaustion from all players. He has also cast remove curse on the wounds that wouldn't heal. Everyone should be fully healed.) It's almost enough to make a dwarf start to rethink the elves. Almost.

"I... I'm sure she is more than capable of looking out for herself" Tally says in a less than convincing manner "However if you wanted to catch up to her quickly I would suggest taking some ponies from the stables. I don't have a scrying spell prepared at the moment, but will do so as part of my evening rituals. With any luck I should be able to scry upon her tomorrow and hopefully get a message to her as well"

Having previously spent more time there than the rest of the party, the way to Mountainburrow is well known to Taggart and Dernock.

It is still early morning.

Danger? What Danger? - DM RobC
Tuesday December 11th, 2012 9:13:18 AM

The now refreshed party head off again with equal haste, leaving behind Tally who seems to be getting just as concerned as you.

Oathbreaker guides the party on what could best be described as a trail - it's far from a path or road. The route bypasses many of the dangers the party previously encountered on their approach to Drakesmeade, and thankfully no purple worms are seen. The party ride to the south east. Far to the south you guess to be the salt flats.

Hours pass with barely any sign of life. A bird high in the sky, some sort of rodent of unusual size watching you from behind a boulder.

The stone outcrops and mountains pass by, and ahead the land seems to be much smoother. The ground is covered in huge chunks of rock, and sick and twisted trees are scattered about. When they last bore leaves is anyones guess. Another reminder that life appears to always succumb in The Scab.

At the current pace there is no way the party will make MountainBurrow before nightfall. The sun is already setting behind you, and the ponies dearly need rest.

From somewhere ahead of you a signal horn sounds, breaking the repetitious "click clack" of the pony feet on rock. The signal is very clear: "Here"

The landscape about a half mile ahead of you changes. What was just another outcrop of rocks and dead trees changes to reveal 4 caravans parked in a square formation. Some sort of encampment has been setup.

Spellcraft DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {Your best guess is that some sort of illusion spell had been hiding the camp site. Perhaps a mass invisibility spell?}

A number of humanoid figures can be seen, with a few waving you towards them. As you get closer you begin to realise that this is the caravan you had been searching for. And standing there smiling and waving is Tahni.

Danger? What Danger? - DM RobC

Terser and Sam admire whatever technique had been used to conceal the encampment.

Sarnak is dubious, and Shonti prepares for the worst, trying to warn Bruagh from rushing ahead. But it is too late.

Throwing caution to the wind Bruagh rushes straight up to Tahni and holds her close. She embraces him back smiling, then looks puzzled, trying to understand what you are all doing here.

There is visible relief in the party that this is not an illusion after all.

Devlin has seen far too much trouble in the Scab, and expects no less from this situation. He takes cover between a rock and a dead tree and stays alert for trouble.

Oathbreaker smiles - perhaps ending the debate as to whether he physically could. Whilst Devlin takes a position at the north side of the camp, Oathbreaker takes a similar position to the south.

Shinto takes up a position on the west side of the camp, still surprised that everything seems to be ok.

With the camp now 'secure', Bruagh and Sam relay to Tahni all that they have discovered in the past few days. She takes the news as well as anyone could expect when told an evil organisation is trying to abduct you. "But... what .. I mean, why me? she asks, hoping someone has an answer. She looks to Bruagh and then pauses "Do you think they're just trying to get me to get to you?". With no immediate answers to her questions, all Tahni can do is weakly smile "I'm glad you're here. All of you"

The encampment consists of 4 covered wagons in a square formation. Inside each wagon is between 8 and 10 refugees. All are dwarven or gnomish women and children - the men having fought to reclaim Drakesmeade. Protecting each wagon are two dwarven soldiers. Each wearing a very nice suit of scale mail, with a crossbow hanging at one hip and an axe or warhammer at the other. A small coat of arms adorns their armor - the same crest worn by General Blackaxe.

In the centre of the formation is the remnants of a firepit, along with eight horses.

It has been a long day, and no doubt everyone is looking forward to getting some rest.

OOC: For everyone to get 8hrs rest you need to have 3 watches. Please detail who is on which watch in your next post, otherwise I will allocate you to a particular watch

Leaving the cover of the tree Devlin makes his way into camp. He smiles when he sees Tahni and gives her a hug. He takes any food that might be available before finding Bruagh. He pulls the holy warrior to the side and speaks with him in hushed tones.

Lad I've been thinkin' about why the necromancers may want Tahni. Sure she be as pure as the mountain snow and for them ta corrupt her would be a feat, but I wonder if there be more ta it. These necromancers seem ta be interested in one thing making a hybrid undead deamon and it looks like Dwarf is the main ingredient. Think back ta Riddleport they used a newborn babe for their ritual. You and the lass have been awfully close. I know you are a Dwarf of honor but might there be a chance they be after Tahni because she is with child? It's not normally my place ta ask and if she be I am happy for the two of ya. But there could be dire implications if that's why the necros are after her.

The rogue takes whatever Bruagh may throw at him with a stoic face before placing a hand on the paladins shoulder. Keep her safe Bruagh Stormbringer, no matter what happens between now and our return to Drakesmead. If she is abducted I fear it could spell disaster for our struggling new kingdom. I don't normally do things like this but I am charging you with her safety above all others, I will lay my life down ta keep the necromancers from taking her and I don't expect you ta abandon her ta save me or anyone else. Devlin squeezes his friends shoulder before wandering off to find a spot to rest.

I will take whatever watch works best for the spellcasters just let me know. He says to the group.

Silence is golden - Round 1 - DM RobC
Thursday December 13th, 2012 7:12:59 AM

Devlin has a delicate conversation with Bruagh, to which the paladin advises to the best of his knowledge that Tahni is not pregnant.

Sam once again confides with Tahni about the voices he hears. She listens with a concerned expression on her face. "Any divine assistance I can offer you I will gladly. Still, this is strange. Ever since that encounter we had with the demon I have been having strange visions. I still don't know what they mean though. Perhaps my visions and your voices are related?" Realising things have gotten far too serious, Tahni chuckles "or perhaps we're just going crazy being away from civilization for too long?" She gives Sam a hug and then turns in for the night.

Shinto decides to give his new tent a try, and invites Sam to share its warmth before his watch.

Sarnak manages to get a good four hours crafting done, under Kyachi's watchful eyes.

Terser goes looking for some ale, but the caravan only brought the items essential to survival. One of the dwarven guards overhears Terser's request, and whistles to get his attention. The guard looks about carefully, then pulls a small flask out from inside his armor and offers Terser a swig. It's not ale - something stronger. When done, the guard gives Terser a wink, takes a swig from the flask himself, then returns it safely inside his armor.

Watch order set at:
First
Sarnak - crafting
Shinto
Oathbreaker

Second
Terser
Sam
Devlin

Third
Dernock
Shonti
Bruagh

The refugees are sleeping peacefully in the wagons.

First watch is quite uneventful. Two guards also stand watch. As opposed to the newer recruits at Drakesmeade, these guards seem to be veterans and take their jobs quite seriously.

Second watch though, well, that's when things get interesting. The night is at its darkest, though thankfully all of those on watch see perfectly well in the dark.

Chuckles notices something first, then Sam and Terser and then finally Devlin. The natural noises you normally hear at night - the whistling of the wind, twigs moving in the trees, your own breathing - all those noises have stopped on the east side of the camp. Chuckles opens his mouth and it looks like he is trying to growl, but nothing comes out. Similarly Terser is unable to hear the sound of the stones under his feet.

Terser and Sam each note a crossbow bolt protruding from the wagons near them. You're reasonably confident they weren't there a minute ago.

Noises are coming from the north - someone or something is approaching.

After he gains his bearings and realizes that we're under attack, Shonti tries to yell out to Shinto as he's headed for Sam, but unfortunately he cannot be heard by anyone.

He thinks over following his brothers lead for a split second, and for once, Shonti decides against it. He feels that he could prove much more useful on the western side of the campsite, and heads that way. Shonti pulls his rod of extend out of his handy haversack as he makes his way towards Braugh, Raeb, and Tahni, and grips it tight in his small hand. He is mentally preparing himself to be ready for the evil that is coming.

The guards are up in a flash, their sleep light to begin with due to the very real and present danger. Two each move to guard the spaces between the wagons, knowing the paladin and his mount have Tahni safe as can be. Any who see an enemy close by will ready their axes, the rest draw their crossbows and scan the area.

Tahni wakes with a twinkle in her eye. She wordlessly gives Bruagh a quick peck on his cheek before consecrating the area between the wagons. "If anyone falls, drag them between the wagons!" she shouts out as she scoops up her shield & dagger. She assumes a defensive position & watches for danger.

Terser runs into the camp and starts to rouse the party. Sam does the same, running through and knocking people as he goes. Soon the entire camp is awake and alert.

Shinto is quick to his feet, but no enemies are in sight. Perhaps the gnome just had a nightmare?

Devlin backs towards the wagon and positions himself close to a wheel.

Shonti gets to his feet at the alarm and moves closer to the middle of the camp (Note it is a move action to stand from prone, a move action to get to the middle of the camp, and a move action to get your rod out. So as at the end of the round the rod is still in your pack)

Oathbreaker makes it to the top of the nearest wagon but can't see any targets (Didn't have enough actions left anyway to be able to shoot either). He does see another crossbow bolt lodged into the roof of the wagon.

Dernock gets to his feet, but feels a bit inadequate without his armor (Though he seems to have healed a LOT! Might want to adjust that header, as I think 383HP is a typo)

Sarnak wakes and gets to his feet, before moving outside of the area of silence (Note it is a move action to stand from prone and then another to move outside the area of silence. No summoning this round). As he moves he notices a crossbow bolt sticking from the ground very near where he was sleeping.

Bruagh gets to his feet and casts a spell to help improve his defences.

Shinto moves to stand next to Sam (Note it is a move action to stand from prone, and thne another to move next to Sam. You haven't had time to take a potion from your haversack yet)

The guards take formation and all stand ready to defend. Tahni blesses the area to protect it from any undead.

There is more silence except for some small screams and sobs comming from inside the wagons.

The guards are able to see some 'things' approaching.

Guard #4 in particular sees 4 crossbow bolts come straight at him (Hit AC19, 10, 23, 7 for 10, 2, 4, 6 respctively)

A large portion of the party find the air get thick and a bit smelly, like a rotten egg has exploded (Stinking Cloud centred on X24. Fort save vs DC18 or be nauseated)

Oathbreaker sees 3 magic missiles leap from the darkness to the south, and is hit for 7pts damage

Two bolts thunk into guard #4, the others ricocheting off his armor into the darkness. Looking around at the number of demons incoming, he wonders if they're real. Unable to express his concern due to silence, the dwarf raises his crossbow at one of the demons (AE-15) and lets loose a bolt of his own. It strikes unerringly (Nat 20 - 22 to confirm crit - 12 damage - I only roll like this when I'm not playing my wizard.)! The guard closely watches the impact to determine whether or not these things are illusion (will save 18).

That stinking cloud is most certainly real, though. Guard #3 begins to wretch & takes a knee. His companion moves to provide cover as the affected guard gets a hold of himself.

Tahni smiles and makes a sour face at Bruah while waving the cloud away from her face. She's otherwise unaffected as well. She pulls a slender wand from her belt & uses the divine magic stored inside to Bless her companions.

"Be strong, fellow dwarves!" she shouts to the refugees. "We've fought and survived worse than this. These fools will soon learn it is they who should be afraid!

"Isn't the right?" she finishes with a wink to Bruagh. It seems part of Tahni has missed the adventuring life...

The remainder of the guards stand ready to attack anyone that enters their threat range.

Since the majority of the guards had melee attacks readied for round two & the demons advanced, I'm taking the liberty of attacking twice where appropriate. I'm also assuming Guard#4 hit a demon, tried to see through illusion, and either failed or determined these things are real.

Guards #1 & 2 stand shoulder-to-shoulder in order to block the advancing demons. As the creatures approach they lash out with their axes (Hit AC 20 & 21 for 12 & 7 damage, respectively). They press the attack, determined not to let these things in. Guard1 hits ac 14 for 5 damage. Guard 2 swings his axe around and catches a demon square in the gullet, his axe continuing upwards through its chest! (Nat 20 - Confirmed with a 22. x3 crit = 27 damage).

Both attacking the demon at V31.

Guard 3 continues to retch, and soon guard 5 is as well. Both move to S23 & S24, respectively.

Guards 4 and 6 also trigger their prepared attacks on the demons (both going after AE-22). Guard4 gets a nat20, but fails to confirm (hit AC10) - 8 damage. Guard6 hits AC 17 for 4 damage. They continue their attacks, hitting AC 20 (guard 4 is hurting & fighting defensively) for 8 damage & 22 for 7 damage.

Guards 7 and 8 follow suit. Guard 7 hits ac 26 for 9 damage. Guard 8 hits at 20 for 11 damage (using power attack). Pressing with their regular attacks, guard 7 misses & guard 8 hits AC 28 for 16 damage. Both attack AE30.

Tahni gathers herself & moves out of the cloud (AA27). She peers out and tries to determine what kind of demons they're dealing with (Knowledge, The Planes: 26).

Spotting the tents on fire, she casts create water on the area above AB32, causing 10 gallons to downpour over the lit area. "Tag, do you see where those bolts are coming from?"

Shinto just as bravely crawls under a wagon

Terser quickly flanks a demon and sinks his axe into it.

Devlin tries the same, flanking a nearby demon and trying to strike it with his short swords. Unfortunately his aim is off.

Sam and Chuckles lay low, as does Sarnak

Guards 1 and 2 focus their attacks on the same demon, and manage to dispatch it. These things are definitely not illusory.

Guards 4 and 6 continue to empty their stomachs as they flee the fog (They will both be nauseated for 5 rounds)

Dernock, Guards 7 and 8 team up to take care of a demon, though the guards probably did most of the work in this case (Did guards 7 & 8 pass the DC18 Ref save vs the fireball?)

Tahni moves to clean air and conjures some water to address the fire on the southern wagon (Note she needed to cast before moving. The square she has moved to is silenced. Also, did she make the 2nd fort save?) She believes the demons to be Dretches.

Oathbreaker coughs through the smoke and then moves to start putting out the fire (Rolled a D3 to see how long it would take to extinguish this way. Rolled a 3. So far 1 round out of 3 stops it from spreading, but its still alight)

Bruagh and Raeb move north towards where the think the battle is (Given the fog you didn't have line of sight to charge)

D4 moves to flank Terser (Miss AC10 and 16. Hit AC21 +2flanking for 2pts)

D5 also bites at Terser (Miss AC11 and 11. Hit AC21 +2flanking for 2pts)

D6 attacks G4 savagely (Flanking so +2 to all these. Hit AC18, 22 and 24 (Nat20 but not confirmed). Damage of 4, 5 and 3)

D7 and D9 rip into G1 (Flanking so +2 to all these. Hit AC23, 15, 12, 7, 20, 11 for 4, 5, 5, 4, 5, 3 respectively)

D10 and D11 try to do the same on G7 but fail miserably (6 attack rolls and not one higher than a 6)

More crossbow bolts fly from the darkness into the guards in the northeast (Attacking G4 is he is still standing, else G6. Hit AC24 (failed to confirm crit) and AC22 for 2 and 8pts)

G3, Devlin and Tahni feel something probing their minds (Will saves vs DC16 or be paralyzed!)

Saves were all rolled. Guard 8 failed his, the others succeeded. Sorry about not posting it; I only had a few moments to squeeze that entire round in.

Guard #4 falls to the last bolt flying from the darkness.Guard 6's axe is lifted high overhead before splitting D6's head open from skull to sternum! (Nat 20, confirmed w/ a 26 - power attack x3 = 45 damage).

Guards 3 & 5 start feeling better, until they don't. They retch with no signs of stopping. As if that's not bad enough, guard 3 finds himself paralyzed. Hopefully he was bent over at the time so we won't choke on his own bile.

Guard 1 absorbs three blows before deciding to take a lesson from his opponents. Taking a 5' step west, he and guard 2 flank D9, hitting AC 22 and 20 for 11 and 7 damage.

Guard 7 takes a 5' step to the SE. He and guard 8 flank D11 & hit AC 19 & 15 for 5 & 5 damage.

Tahni shakes off the paralysis with ease (Another nat 20. Why doesn't Restlin roll like this?). Unable to cast where she is now, she follows the stinking cloud's southern border until she's outside the silence radius. She won't enter D7's threat radius, however. If she's able to cast, she'll pull out her protection from evil wand & cast it on Dernock if he's in range, herself if he's not.

Lack luster post, but I get to spend all day in the hospital (everyone's fine). Time's short.

Dernock once again gets into the swing of things. he takes a more conservative hit but it seems to pay off. He has no idea about these things 'Drenchs?' maybe but that looked like a real nasty blow but the follow up with the shield - it may have missed. Oh wait, Looks like he forgot to take the safety off first.

Devlin goes to move towards the exposed flank of the next demon but feels his limbs stiffen for a moment. He pushes past the feeling and roars in defiance rushing the next creature. Blocking the creature easy access to Sam Devlin slides his blade into its ribs twisting the blade as he pulls it from the demons body. A dark black ichor begins to run from the wound. The rogue shakes his blade to free it of the blood.

Guard #3 feels himself stuck in spot - perhaps a nice relief from the queasiness he still feels.

Guard #4 drops to the ground. Another dwarf who will not make it out of the Scab.

Guard #5 is still vomitting and can manage to do little else.

Guard #6 brings his axe down on the demons head - perhaps inspired by the death of his friend. The demon dies instantly.

Guard #7 flanks the demon and attacks, but his blows dont seem to affect the otherwordly being.

Shinto and Shonti stay within the safety of their wagons, as Sam and Chuckles still continue to vomit.

Tahni edges her way closer to Dernock and draws a wand from her pack (Move action to move, and a move action to draw her wand from her sack. Can cast it on someone next turn)

Devlin shrugs off the spell's effects, and then teams up with Dernock. Dernock pulls out all stops, taking off D7's head - no time for Devlin's bleed damage to even begin.

Terser manages to take care of a nearby demon as well. Though his eyes and ears are sharp, he cannot see the mysterious shooter. Whoever is firing is doing so from more than 60ft.

Oathbreaker lets loose two arrows. Both stick into the demon, but it continues to stand. He stamps his feet on the wagon, but his steps are silent.

Sarnak moves outside the range of the silence, and summons a cheetah. (Moved you so you could cast. Also took the liberty of having it attack a different target for you seeing as the other was already down). The cheetah sets to work immediately, clawing at the demon.

Bruagh and Raeb double up on the same demon and do a significant amount of damage - but the demon still stands.

The party notice that when these demons die, their bodies disappear. Common for summoned creatures.

Things seem to be going well for the party.

But now isn't the time to be complacent. The ground beneath Dernocks, Tahni's and Sarnack's feet quickly drops away. A 30ft hole has opened directly where they are standing (Ref save vs DC17 to move to a vacant square or fall into the pit. Cheetah, G1 and G2 also need to make the save, but with a +2 bonus. Anyone that falls in will take falling damage. DC to climb out is 25)

D1 and D2 slash with their claws, and dextrous as he is, Bruagh takes many cuts (Miss AC13, 14. Hit AC23, 23, 18, 22 for 3, 4, 5, 3)

D3 tries to do the same to Raeb (Hit AC13, 12, 16 for 5, 2,4 respectively)

D4 snarls at Terser, but does little in the way of hurting him (Missed AC17, 20 and 5)

D6 is the same with G6 (Missed AC9, 16, 8)

D9 takes a step back and bares its teeth at the forming group. The pit certainly has helped it out, but it is still clearly outnumbered. It points at the ground it just moved away from, and a familiar cloud starts to form (Shinto is safe, but Sam, Chuckles, Devlin, Cheetah, Tahni, Sarnak, Dernock, G1 and G2 need to make a Fort save vs DC13 or be nauseated. Anyone that fell in the pit needn't make this save as the cloud hasn't extended down there.... yet. 9 of you in such close proximity - yep, I'm going to pull out the AoE spells!)

Though noone can see it now, you can hear D9 growl, obviously not affected by the stench (Fort save vs own stinking cloud: 21 = pass)

Four more crossbow bolts fire from the darkness at G6 (Hit AC 13, 6, 17 and 21 for 1, 8, 6, 8 respectively)

Bruagh feels something tug at his mind (Will save vs DC16 or be paralyzed! This is a spell effect)

Tahni only. Dernock and Sarnak may also read if they pass a DC25 perception Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear a voice whisper: "This is but a small taste of the forces surrounding your position my dear. Guard 2 falls into the pit, grunting as he hits the bottom (9 damage). He scrambles up the side of the pit, but can't get a good handhold (He can't possibly make a DC25 climb check).

Guard 1 keeps his balance and moves 5' to D9 before pressing his attack (Hit AC 17 for 12 damage).

Tahni finds herself at Y30 before she realizes what's going on (3rd nat 20 for her in as many rounds. I'm taking her with me to Hook, Rob. She's good luck.)

The whisper in her ear immediately sends her ire up, before she realizes their assailants could very well torch every refugee they're carrying. How are they supposed to convince their brethren to reoccupy Drakesmeade if they can't even keep them safe for the trip there?

"You try to catch me in a pit I probably couldn't climb out of and in the next breath tell me to move away and surrender myself. You should have a chat with your underlings about synergy." She curses internally as another stinking cloud erupts around her, but shakes it off (Fort save 23).

"Convince me you won't just slay them after you have me, and I'm sure we can work something out. I'm in no mood to get kidnapped just to watch these dwarves burn anyway." She'll then finish casting protection from evil on Dernock before heading just east enough to get away from this cloud (Z29)

Guard 6 doesn't want to share his companions death at the hands of this sniper. He withdraws from combat to AE25 before continuing to AF26. He stands ready to attack should the demon follow.

Guards 3 and 5 continue emptying their stomachs.

Guard 8 takes a 5' step to flank D11 before attacking. His swing isn't impressive, but hopefully sufficient (Hit AC 16 for 7 damage). Guard 7 also takes advantage, but is no more elegant than his partner (Hit AC 16 for 10 damage).

Instead of jumping out inside the "camp" circle, he takes to the southern side of the wagon, quickly tears through the canvas cover of it, and jumps down to the ground. He makes his way around the cloud a little ways, before looking around for whoever is casting these spells at our campsite. Sam and Chuckles push through the cloud to try and find these hidden casters (Note Chuckles can only take a single move action. I've moved you to where I think you can reach this turn: Q33)

Devlin stealthily moves to where he dropped his crossbows (A move action, then another move action to shethe your swords, then another move action to pickup a dropped weapon? Sorry, only 2 moves this turn. You can pick up your crossbow next round)

Dernock and Sarnak tumble into the hole. It could be a blessing in disguise as they see the foul mist overhead. Sarnak then prepares to retaliate with a spell (For haste "one creature/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart" The targets you have specified are quite spread out. Please advise who is hasted noting your line of sight from the bottom of a 30ft hole. Also, Cheetah to make another Fort save vs DC 13 or be nauseated.)

Terser attacks the demon one last time before going for cover by the wagon. (Sooo... you're using a reach weapon? "Reach: You use a reach weapon to strike opponents 10 feet away, but you can't use it against an adjacent foe". Does this mean you couldn't have attacked the demons in the past few rounds? Holding your AoO for now til we work this out)

Bruagh and Raeb continue to work together to attack the demon, but the paladins thoughts are elsewhere.

Shinto finishes throwing up (Free to act next round. Remind me to empower this spell in the future! :))

Shonti moves and not seeing anyone to the south, turns and casts a flaming sphere at D11. The demon seems to ignore the ball of fire that surrounds it. (Note you do not have line of sight to D10 so I took the liberty of changing your target to D11)

G1 pushes the attack, but his axe glances off the demons hide. (Need to make another Fort save vs DC 13 or be nauseated.)

G2 finds himself stuck at the bottom of a pit with Dernock and Sarnak.

Guards 3 and 5 continue to be sick. Luckily there are no enemies within striking range of them.

Guard 6 withdraws and prepares to counterattack.

Guards 7 and 8 coordinate to flank their demon enemy, but alas its hide is surprisingly tough.

With Dernock out of reach, Tahni is unable to cast her spell. She instead starts to move east

Terser's movement provokes an AoO from D4, who scratches heavily at his back (Hit AC24 - Nat 20. Failed to confirm. 5pts damage)

D1 and D2 continue to bite and slash at Bruagh (Hit AC21, 24 (Nat 20 - failed to confirm), 19, and 17 for 5, 4, 4, and 5. Miss AC9 and 14)

D3 tries to sink its teeth into Raeb (Hit AC16 for 3. Miss AC 8 and 11)

D4 and D6 move it to attack Terser, D6's teeth grazing Terser's armor (Miss AC10, 12, 20)

D9 swipes with its claws at G1 (Hit AC13, 23 and 18 for 2, 3, and 4)

D10 and D11 combine to attack G7 (All of these attacks should have +2 to flanking added. Hit AC17, 21, 9, 21, 20, 19 for 5, 5, 4, 5, 4 and 3)

No crossbow bolts come from the darkness.

The zones of silence look to have ended. The fire on the wagon to the east has now spread. The refugees exit from the north end of the wagon and screaming, start running east, away from the camp (Not shown on the map, but there are 8 of them making a break for it). The canvas beneath Oathbreaker gives way dumping the dwarf into the fiery wagon. (Oathbreaker takes 5pts fire damage)

Tahni Highlight to display spoiler: {The voice responds: "Oh, you think you have a choice? Every five seconds you make me wait will see more people burn. The only hope you have of saving them is to come to me. NOW. Head east, then south. I will find you. Only then will the bloodshed stop. Allow me to demonstrate what will happen the longer you stall"}

A ball of fire erupts alongside Shonti, setting half of the wagon on fire! (Shonti take 28pts damage. Ref save vs DC18 for half)

Refugee screams now sound all around the camp. Those in the burning wagon to the south, exit to the west, and are quickly overcome by the nauseating cloud. But at least they are not burning. Still sick, they start moving south into the darkness!

Tahni sees the refugees take flight and realizes this voice holds all the cards. "Very well," comes her reply. Several choice retorts and insults flit through the oracle's mind, but she keeps them to herself. These fools know not what kind of hell their actions will unleash.

Though the fog obscures her sight, she can hear Braugh and Raeb fighting for her safety. She knows he will blame himself for this. That hurts more than anything. She deliberately places her glass dagger in the open for him to find. It will have to do for now.

Blasted demons, they fight ta the bitter end while the necromancers hide in the shadows. Devlin scans the battle peeking under the wagon to get a better view. Cant say I wouldna' do the same though.

Reload hvy crossbow

With a ferocious blow, Terser gets his revenge on the demon that had the gall to bite him.

Sam continues to ride around the perimeter of the camp (U39). His voice finally pierces through the chaos.

"Protect Tahni and the refugees! Strike these demons down! Don't give up!" (Inspire courage +1 to group)

Ooc-Chuckles should be able to move 11 squares. 1 5ft and a move of 50ft.

The Oathbreaker stumbles out of the burning wagon, coughing and wheezing from the smoke. He manages to regain his composure long enough to see Tahni run past him. Wait... what? Did I miss something? He whips his head around, pulling out an arrow and sticking it in D11 before calling out, "Tahni! Where in the Scab are you going!?"

Both the Paladin and the Bear have taken a beating and are close to collapsing. Then Bruagh hears Tag cry out to Tahni and he panics. "Raeb! Let's go get her!!!" The Paladin knows she is not on the north or west side of the fog so he decides to head south with Raeb. He mounts his faithful companion and the run at full speed to the South.

Bruagh mounts Raeb.
Raeb runs full speed south (50ft base movement at run speed) staying out of the cloud.

[B]Sigh. Guess it's time fer more climbin'[B] he states rather despairingly but can't seem to get a decent handhold on anything. The fall probably shook him up a bit.

Climb check 15
I forgot to remove the armour class penalty when I tried to reduce my fall damage also it seems my Crit has been followed by a series of bad rolls.

BOOM!
As the fireball erupts right next to him, Shonti is burnt pretty badly but it's not quite enough to put this dwarf out of commision! He takes off with a start into the darkness ahead of him, running between the small fires beginning to spread. He takes a quick look around, but with the confusion of the screaming, and the fires spreading, he isn't able to see much... He directs his Flaming Sphere to head south as well, in search of a more flammable opponent. The dwarf does however, notice Tahni running out of the camp, as he is headed south-east himself only at a much slower pace. "By Gargul! Where're ya goin' Tahni?! I'm comin wit ya, let's take this fight to em!"
