Ulfgar's Meeting -- DM Ian
Monday November 26th, 2012 12:02:15 AM

It almost seems too early as the suns rise over Bryn Baraz the next day. Dull, grey clouds hang low in the sky, threatening another storm -- although nowhere near as bad as the last. Still, the anticipation can be felt in the air as the townsfolk go about the repairs. Clearly, some fear that the storm may herald another attack on their village. As each of the heroes wake up, they find themselves being told a quick message by a courier before they dash off to find the next member of the party. Ulfgar Greymine is waiting for you in his office on the east side of the town. He has asked that you make your way there as early as you can to discuss your findings -- or lack thereof.

Sorry for missing the Friday post, folks -- so here's two to make up for it!

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:35/35/27 HP:86/86 Ki:11/12 CMD: 23]
Monday November 26th, 2012 2:14:58 PM

Garret arrives back in town deep in thought. He says to himself, out loud, "How are we going to find this thing? It seems clear there's a lab out there somewhere, but with everything flying, we aren't going to be able to find it."

He turns to Ulfgar and the others and says, "I think we need a watch in place. Whoever or whatever this thing is, it seems likely to attack again. We're going to need to be on alert and we need to have Avis ready for flight so we can attempt to track these things back to their source."

Keela
Monday November 26th, 2012 10:14:21 PM

Keela greets her family, and assures them that she is all right, but she is also anxious to spend time with Jack.

Later, with her companions, the talk turns to strategy. "I could cast an Alarm spell up above the town," she offers. She frowns. "Of course, it would go off every time a bird flies into the area. Maybe that's not such a good idea."

Anrete [HP: 94/107, AC 25/16/21, CMD 29]
Monday November 26th, 2012 10:19:18 PM

"All sort of cooking require ingredients! Not my area thou, but I am sure Davdok can think of what sort of ingredients they may be harvesting! We can then lay a trap and follows the harvester back?"

Anrete suggests a plan to locate the lair.

Alexi AC 25 Tch 13 Ffted 22 HP 103/114 CMD 27
Monday November 26th, 2012 11:19:25 PM

Alexi is perplexed at their inability to pinpoint any one spot where the alchemical smells start and thus their source. 'It's as if the ground itself is the source. Hopefully Davdok can shed some light on that once he spends time in his laboratory' he ponders.

"Obviously flying around isn't going to solve anything right now. I suggest a more direct approach. Head out there on horsback and camp in that dang place. See what happens!" he exclaims frustrated.

He reiterates his plan the next morning at Ulfgar's meeting.

Upon arriving back home, Davdok departs for his lab, knowing that he likely has a sleepless night ahead of him. He eyes the vials in his bag. Oh yes, certainly a sleepless night.

Ulfgar's Meeting -- DM Ian
Tuesday November 27th, 2012 10:52:46 AM

As the party makes their way for Ulfgar's office, they are joined by Haggard who has also been asked to join in this meeting. When the heroes enter the small building, they are greeted with a very tired Ulfgar Greymine pouring over a map of Bryn Baraz and the surrounding area. He doesn't even look up as you enter. The old miner is muttering to himself, and looks much less calm than he did last night. "Glad you could all make it," he mutters, gesturing to the few seats that are in the room. "I hope you don't mine Haggard sitting in on this. He's helped me organize the repairs, I would like him to sit in on this." Ulfgar finally looks up, studying each of you before he continues. "We received word from Katarina last night. The creatures... they're unlike anything she's ever seen. The amount of magic and alchemy poured into this these is just..." He falters, searching for the right words. "She said these... these things were in pain. Their minds have been shattered completely -- whatever was one there is now gone, replaced with something from whoever or whatever made them. What about you folks? Any new information?"

Garret brings up the idea of a watch around town, fearful of another attack.

Keela offers an Alarm spell for the town -- but realizes that it might be a bit touchy with the local wildlife.

Anrete suggests laying a trap for these monsters and then following them back to their lair.

Alexi seems frustrated, wanting to just camp out in the Great Prairies and wait for something to happen.

Davdok managed to find some time to look over the vials and determine one very important thing -- the dirt is completely normal. Opening the vials, he can tell they don't even smell, and every test he can think of running comes up negative. It is clear to the Alchemist that the dirt is not the source of the stench.

Ulfgar listens carefully to everyone's suggestions, taking a few notes as he does so. When the heroes have finished speaking, the old miner puts his pen down and rubs his eyes. "I... I have to be honest with you all. This mine... while plentiful, it's becoming more and more difficult to justify this settlement. The Stonehelm Mining and Exploration Company of New Elenna is considering shutting us down if something isn't done about this soon." He looks at each of the heroes, tears welling in his eyes. "After all this... we've come so far. I can't see it fail now."

Zeph Illidian HP 113/113 AC 26/23t/18ff CMD 24 (Mage Armor)
Tuesday November 27th, 2012 1:55:41 PM

Zeph consider's Ulfgar's words and the information Davdok gathered, "If not the earth... then perhaps the water? Rivers and oceans become rain after all, and the storm seems to be this new foe's tool.
What bodies of water lie around Bryn Baraz?"

He says looking at the map.

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:35/35/27 HP:86/86 Ki:11/12 CMD: 23]
Tuesday November 27th, 2012 3:16:07 PM

Garret nods at Alexi and says, "That might not be a bad idea -- but I fear for the town if we are all out there. I do not like waiting for the enemy to come to us, but if we cannot find them, I fear we have no other options."

Keela
Tuesday November 27th, 2012 8:37:51 PM

Keela sighs. "If we knew what they were after, we could try to lure them to another location. But we have no idea why they attacked in the first place."

"I agree with Garret. Waiting here for an attack is a poor strategy, but it's the only one we have at the moment."

Alexi AC 25 Tch 13 Ffted 22 HP 103/114 CMD 27
Tuesday November 27th, 2012 9:38:12 PM

"Ulfgar, once before we moved everyone into the mines. We can do it again. The mines are quite inpenetrable to these attacks. Until we solve this problem, during the day the people can work their fields and ply their craft and at night take refuge in the mines. They know where there is a pool of clear water. They've camped their before.

Once we finish off what's creating these things, then normal life can resume.

Now about whatever is creating these things. We've not tried to locate an Invisible hide out have we? If the earth is normal, and we can't find it by scent, then it must be invisible or some flying laboratory that hides in the clouds.

Some more Divine Guidance is in order here. I'll even donate one of those mithril statues to whichever god points us in the right direction,"
Alexi states with a slight wink and grin.

"There is nothing in the dirt whatsoever. It is completely and utterly...normal dirt. Whatever is making that stench, it isn't the dirt."

Anrete [HP: 94/107, AC 25/16/21, CMD 29]
Wednesday November 28th, 2012 11:22:46 AM

"Maybe it is inside the mines? Some miners broke into a hidden lab underground? Maybe we can interview some of the miners or even villagers to see if anyone notice anything strange recently?"

Alexi rolls his eyes but smiles when he replies to Anrete's questions, "We flew in Avis for several hours before we came upon the Area of Unusual Smell. I doubt our mines go that far. But if you want to go sniff up the dwarves to see if your hypothesis is correct, go for it."

Alexi winks at Ulfgar.

Ulfgar's Meeting -- DM Ian  d6=4 ; d6=6 ; d20+10=26 ; d20+10=11 ; d4+4=6 ; 3d6=12 ;

Zeph looks at the map for nearby water sources. There is a river that flows rather close to Bryn Baraz, as well as a few that run through the Great Prairie, feeding into Turtle Lake.

Garret agrees with the idea of letting the enemies come to them, but fears that this may put the townsfolk in harm's way.

Keela wonders what they might be after, and wonders if they can be lured somewhere other than the village.

Alexi reassures Ulfgar about further attacks, and the old miner simply shakes his head. "It's not about the people for them. It's about the money. We can hide everyone in the mines, but if we come back up and the entire village is destroyed... they might not be willing to pay for the repairs." He also presents the possibility that they may be looking for an invisible hideout.

Davdok reveals the fruits of his research -- which, unfortunately, is not much.

Anrete wonders if something has been unearthed in the mines -- perhaps a laboratory that someone has seen something down there.

Ulfgar closes his eyes, sighing deeply. "I think..." He drifts off, looking out the window. He remains oddly quiet for a moment before making an odd choking noise. Haggard steps forward, speaking for the first time. "Is something wrong, Ulfgar?" The miner looks up to him, something... odd in his eyes. Fear? Pain? You soon realize that it is the latter as the old miner begins to cough up blood. Ulfgar slumps over the table in from of him, a massive wound in his back -- and a very odd creature standing behind him. Barely two feet tall, it's massive claw dripping with blood. You barely have time to get a look at it before it screeches, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. Haggard cries out in surprise as Alexi does the same, but in pain. Another invisible assailant slashes at the Cavalier, dealing 18 damage! The Alchemist Davdok feels something swipe the air next to him, narrowly avoiding his arm.

Sorry for this post being a bit late, had a final today. Round 1 of combat. Map to come tomorrow. Any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Suiting actions to words, she moves to catch both men by the hand, then uses Dimension Door to take them out of the building.

If she can't get both men, she'll get the wounded Ulfgar.

They have to be "willing," so if they choose not to go, they don't have to.

Zeph joins the enemies in invisibility, getting ready to cast a spell that should reveal them.

Alexi dashes to the nearest corner, flailing with his sword behind him. He feels it connect with something, but whether or not it did any damage is another question.

Keela moves to grab the civilians, taking an attack of opportunity in the process! An invisible assailant slashes her arm, drawing blood easily and dealing 20 damage! Luckily, the Wizard manages to grab both the shocked innkeeper and the bleeding miner and get them out of the building. I didn't place you on the map, so please indicate where you teleported to in your next post.

Davdok takes his ally's warning and dives into a corner, shielding his eyes.

It looks like all the cool kids are turning invisible as Anrete fades into obscurity. As Zeph's Glitterdust explodes in the center of the room. When it clears, three very clear figures are standing in the middle of the office. Realizing they've been seen, those three fade back from invisibility. Augmented with metal plates and unnaturally long claws. Whatever these creatures were, they are no longer, as their enormous, gnashing teeth that do not even fit in their mouth. It is clear that these have come from the same place as the Guth'Roka. The one nearest Anrete is helpless as the Barbarian lays into it!

Garret rolls to the wall, his tattoo shining brightly as the magic is activated.

Assassins 2 and 3 are too busy rubbing the dust from their eyes to bother moving, but Assassin 1 kept its eyes clear. It swings its claws at blindly at the air in front of it, but moth attacks miss the invisible Anrete! Garret feels something swing at the air in front of him, but Alexi is not so lucky -- an invisible claw slashes the Cavalier, dealing 20 damage!

DM Sanity Note: I forgot to mention earlier that Alexi has Blind-fight. This may have made a difference in being hit, or not, I can't tell.

An invisible attacker gets no advantages related to hitting you in melee. That is, you don't lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class, and the attacker doesn't get the usual +2 bonus for being invisible.

The first attack he would certainly be Flat-footed. This second attack, he'd be ready, though.

Also, by your description, it would appear that there are two others in the room not affected by the Glitterdust. I'm puzzled by your description fading back from invisibility. I'm gathering that this means they are fully visible instead of just glittering outlines?

IC: Aleix whips out his hand axe and rather than attack an ivisible foe, steps forward to 6,11 and lays into A1 whether he is prone (-4 AC) or not (although if A1 is dead, he'll move to 4,9 and use just the first two attacks).

Att1 Primary weapon longsword +16 = 20, dmg 14
Att2 Secondary weapon handaxe +13 = 30, dmg 9
Att3 Primary +10 = 18, dmg 13
Att4 Secondary +4 = 18, dmg 5

Perception +10 to see if he notices where the invisible assailant that attacked him is. If he does notice, he tells the group through the link what square to attack, if they want = 13. :(

DM Ian The assassin's hit by Glitterdust are now fully visible. While you know there are others in the room from being attacked, they are not visible, and do not appear on the map. While I agree that Alexi would not have been flat-footed for the second attack, but it hit for a 27 and still dealt damage. DM post edited to make this clearer.

Anrete has no problem getting the abomination on its back, and easily slashes into it twice. Its blood, or at least what goes for blood with these things, appears to be a rich, dark blue color. And it smells... actually, rather nice.

Alexi dashes forward and puts the beast out of its misery, its screams only seeming to enrage the other visible creatures further.

Zeph casts Wandering Star Motes, sending them flying onto the third phase-beast. Whether it was too distracted by the Glitterdust, or simply too weak, the creature's already blind eyes unable to see the magic that has him captured. Will: 10, dazed and blinded. Unfortunately, the Avenger cannot see the phase-beast near his Halfling friend, but he has the unsettling feeling of being watched...

Keela calls for help for the injured miner, and Haggard takes up the call as well. The Wizard runs too quickly to see if anyone comes to heed the call, and whips open the doors of the office to a very familiar scene.

Garret moves so quickly, he cannot tell between the rushing air around him and a missed attack. But as he hops the table, he can plainly see that the creature attacking Anrete has fallen -- and so he redirects his attack to the second phase-beast. Fort: 19, stunned for 1 round, blinded. (Alexi's attacks killed #1. Redirected your attack to #2. If you would like to have done something different, please indicate it in your next post.)

The first beast has fallen, the second and third incapacitated to the point where they seem to just be flailing their limbs, attempting to strike anything around them -- although the one struck with Garret's Stunning First seems to be having trouble with that. There is a split second of silence before more of the invisible assailants lash out at their targets -- Alexi and Anrete! The invisible Barbarian feels one just miss him, but another digs into his side, exposing a weak point in his armor and dealing 21 damage! The Cavalier is stabbed in the back with what could be a claw, dealing 16 damage, but turns just in time to have the second miss. He determines from the last two attacks that the creature is either in 06.12 or 05.11.

Keela hesitates. She knows a lot of area-effect spells, which will hit the creatures whether they are invisible or not. But they don't distinguish between friends and foes. And some of her friends are invisible, too.

Maybe tossing fireballs isn't such a great idea.

Uncertain what else to do, Keela casts a False Life on herself to try to mitigate the damage she's already taken.

DM question: Are we still interpreting Haste to be an area-effect spell? Or is it individually targeted?

DM Ian Haste's targeting is explained on the SRD as one creature/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart. It targets specific creatures within those parameters, not an area. You must be able to see your targets.

Alexi tries to do a better job at pinpointing the correct spot of his assailant by first stepping to 5,12. He then tells the others through the Link where he thinks his assailant might be and adds to Keela to maybe use that great web spell of hers in that corner and not to worry about him.

He then yells over to Davdok to throw one of his bombs at 6,12.

Then he takes two swings at 5,11 and if he hits something, he takes his next two attacks at 5,11. But, if he hits only air on the first two attacks, he switches his last two attacks to 6,12.

Monday December 3rd, 2012 10:45:06 PM

Keela, fearing she might help her enemies or hurt her allies, opts to simply heal herself from the earlier attack.

Anrete washes, rinses, and repeats as another assassin hits the ground and falls victim to his blade. (It was my fault you were placed improperly on the map, so I'll let you take the 5 ft step.)

To the untrained eye, it seems that Alexi is simply flailing wildly at the air -- but his allies know that the Cavalier is checking for invisible enemies. His first two attacks hit nothing, but his final attack lands on something, sending a spray of rich blue blood across the floor. His keen eyes can now track the bleeding creature, although without a knowledge of their anatomy, it will still be difficult to hit. (Creature is now trackable, but still has concealment.)

Garret steps up, laying into the creature in front of him. The Monk is quickly kicking a dead horse as the creature collapses in front of him.

Zeph's ring glows brightly as he calls on its power to cast Web in one corner of the room. The Wizard can see something flailing around and shredding the web in 06.12, but it soon stops as he assumes the creature is stuck in the strands. Reflex: 17, grappled Alexi and Anrete please make a DC 18 Reflex Save or become grappled by the web!

Another split second of silence is broken by an attack -- on Garret! The invisible assailant slashes at the Halfling, but his supernatural speed allows him to deftly dodge both attacks -- although there is no telling where they came from. The assassin affected by multiple spells and effects simply stumbled around in a stupor, unable to do much else.

Anrete dodges from side to side, getting through the web without an issue. Spinning around quickly, he slashes at the grappled assassin, hitting it with ease.

Alexi seems to have trouble with the web, but manages to recover enough to hit the creature in front of him nearly every time!

Keela absolutely torches the creature, and its corpse flickers back into visibility, bleeding out into the web.

Garret absolutely obliterates the last phase-beast, his fists moving so fast that none of you can track them. It can never be said that Halflings cannot be monks.

The room is quiet for a few seconds... and then the silence remains. However, as you begin to relax, Zeph hears something just in front of him -- but it's too late! Another phase-beast appears in front of him, its knife already buried in the Wizard's gut. It seems a bit bigger than the others, its mottled skin a darker shade. But one thing is certain -- Zeph might be dead. Take 25 damage, and please make a DC 15 Fortitude Save... or die.

Zeph just manages to hang on as the final assassin sinks its blade into his gut. He and his allies have no trouble dispatching the creature, and it collapses to the floor in a pool of its own blood. The room remains silent, this time permanently. Looking around the room, none of the heroes think that there are any other phase-beasts in the room - but of course, hiding seems to be their specialty. Shotus are heard coming from outside punctuated with a few screams. A few of the voices seem to be calling for help, and you hear Haggard's among them. The words cannot be made out from inside the bloody office. "Go see what that is," Davdok says urgently. The half orc quickly sinks to one knee next to the phase-beast that attacked Zeph. "I need fresh samples if we're going to learn anything."

Outside, a small crowd has gathered where Keela teleported to. The screams have subsided, but there are still a few shouting for help. When the first heroes emerge, Haggard is the first to spot them from the edge of the crowd. "Get over here!" he cries out, his voice cracking. "Now!"

Ulfgar's... Funeral? -- DM Ian
Friday December 7th, 2012 11:30:00 PM

The crowd parts quickly as the heroes approach. The scene they are greeted with is not a happy one. Garret's paramour Tara is leaning over the old miner, shaking gently. She looks up as you approach, and you can see tears streaming silently down her face. "I-I did what I could... he just... he was too far gone by the time I got here..." She breaks down into sobs as the nurse hangs her head over Ulfgar's corpse. With his eyes closed, it almost appears as though he is sleeping. The hole in his chest has stopped bleeding, but it does nothing to detract from its seriousness.

Someone clears their throat lightly behind the heroes. Turning, they see Haggard standing there. He hesitates for a moment before speaking. "This... Gods, this is tough." Looking at his hands, you realize they're covered in blood. He must have been trying to save Ulfgar before help showed up. "But you... you can't let them get away. Not this time." Looking around, the heroes see that everyone has now turned their attention from the corpse. Tear-streaked faces and bloodshot eyes look at them, all seeming to echo the inn-keepers thoughts. "Not after this. Go find them. Please... for Ulfgar."

The Hunt Is On... Again -- DM Ian
Monday December 10th, 2012 12:36:15 PM

Zeph can tell that Haggard is telling the truth -- in fact, he seems to be choking back tears. As the tattoo on his face stirs to life, the air comes to life around him. The sickening-sweet smell of the creatures' blood fills his nostrils, but something sharper underlays it. Walking around, he can track that smell outside of the office and down the main road to the west. Flying up, the avenger loses track of the scent, but can estimate that the creatures may very well have just walked into the town undetected, considering their penchant for invisibility.

Keela checks for lingering magic, and manages to find a faint trail leading to the cabin. The magic has a faint aura of illusion -- likely left behind by the creatures now dead in the cabin.

Alexi's words seem to placate the people a bit, although there are still quite a few openly weeping. Heading back inside, he sees that these creatures are quite similar to their previous foes, right down to the fake poison tooth.

Anrete searches for other clues in the area, but there is nothing visible here.

The trail picked up by Zeph and Keela, when tracked further, continues west out of town, and takes a sharp turn north-east, into lands still plagued by the Blight. But this is a better trail than the heroes had last time, and Zeph now has the scent of the phase-beasts, so they should be easy to follow.

He turns and heads out of town, hoping to somehow help the others track down the strange creatures.

Dashing up the stairs he bursts into his room and snatches up his backpack, kept packed and ready for travel at a moments notice. Rumbling down the stairs he stops by the kitchen and picks up whatever travel food Hope could gather in the short time. Within mere moments he is in and out of the Inn.

Once her horse is ready, Keela mounts up and rides after her friends.

The Hunt Is On... Again -- DM Ian

Garret comforts the inconsolable nurse as his allies canvas the area. Tara wipes the tears from her eyes and nods as he comforts her, pulling him into a tight embrace before he leaves. "Be safe," she whispers, turning back to the corpse in front of her. Haggard clears his throat and begins to shout out orders, clearly trying to emulate Ulfgar.

Alexi asks the innkeeper's daughter for help as he dashes off for his mount. As he bursts into the Inn, Hope nearly screams from behind the counter. She has a few packages sitting in wait for him, and waves meekly goodbye as the Cavalier gallops off.

Anrete grabs his horse as well, offering his ally a lift.

Zeph also gathers his horse, promising the townsfolk that the responsible parties will be brought to justice. Haggard listens intently, taking a break from shouting rather hesitant instructions. "I'll have a message sent immediately. I'll... I have to send one to the folks at Stonehelm."

Keela tracks the magic trail, asking Jack to help with her horse.

Before they depart a cleric from the temple steps forward and places his hand on the shoulder of each hero. You all feel rejuvenated, and are healed for all damage. Davdok decides to remain behind, canvassing the office for clues and samples. He offers you each a potion of Cure Serious Wounds (3d8+10) for the road.

There is no crowd to see the heroes off at the gate this time. The trail takes a quick turn north-east into the Blightlands, and quickly begins leading into the mountains. The magic trail peters out after a few hours of tracking, but the scent is still easy to track. As the land turns plagued, your horses begin to shy back a bit, but Alexi's mount Lobo seems to have no issue. The trail continues north-east for a few hours before finally coming to a halt. The scent is too dispersed in this area to track to a specific area -- perhaps this was their meeting point? Either way, the heroes of Bryn Baraz are at the end of the line. If there is anything, it should be here. The area is fairly rocky, with mountains looming around you. A few cliffs and plateaus offer good hiding places, although it may take a bit to canvass the area properly.

The Hunt Is On... Again -- DM Ian
Wednesday December 12th, 2012 5:33:55 PM

The party spreads out, keeping their eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary. Alexi finds no footprints left behind by the phase-beasts, but rather finds a bigger footprint set into the dirt heading east. It looks like it belonged to a larger humanoid creature with what could be claws or talons that dug into the dirt. Searching the area, a trail of these footprints are found, heading east, and Garret immediately sees what they are heading towards. A less trained eye would simply have passed over the structure, but the slighty difference in color makes it stand out from the rock face. Camouflaged to resemble the rock face, it appears to be a small shack built on the side of a nearby cliff. There seems to be no way up, save for climbing the cliff itself, or flying up. As Zeph gets closer, the scent of the phase-beasts begins to coalesce a bit more. As does another familiar smell -- the sharp stench that lay over the Great Prairie.

The shack is 200 feet off of the ground. The immediate area shows no signs of traps, or even any movement -- but in the Blightlands, being alone is usually a good thing.

Garret points out the 'shack' and Alexi squints up at the disguised oddity. 'Is this a shelter hidding a cave entrance? Living up there would offer much protection, but one must be able to fly.

"It would seem these tracks I found have nothing to do with what we are looking for, but it is good to know they are here at least," he comments to no one in particular.

"If we could all fly up there that would be best, however we must attach at least on rope up there as an alternate way down."

Alexi has done more flying than riding as of late and wonders if it would be a good idea to get a tatoo that would enable him to fly for a short while. Meanwhile he waits for the opinions of the others.

OOC:
Oh wait...I guess for a 200' cliff I can go 1/4 my speed for each climb check? And with a speed of 50, that's 12.5 for each one? Does that mean I need sixteen climb checks? I don't know if I've interpreted that all correctly, but in case I have, let's roll some dice!

Up to 87.5 feet. 20: Made it to 100, halfway there. 28: Going up, 112.5 feet. 19: Still going, 125 feet. 29: Can I get a double-move for a natural 20? (137.5 feet). 11: No progress. 21: Up some more, 150 feet. 27: Almost there, 162.5 feet. 19: I can see the top, 175 feet. 20: To 187.5, 24: Yay, made it to 200. I wonder if I figured that right...

The Hunt Is On... Again -- DM Ian
Thursday December 13th, 2012 6:17:27 PM

Multiple strategies are put forward as to how to climb the cliff to reach the shack. The party quickly realizes that the best course of action is to simply scale the cliff itself. Anrete and Garret both make attempts to climb the wall -- by the time Anrete is twenty feet off of the ground, Garret has reached the shack, moving with an unnatural speed up the rock face. Getting closer, you can tell that this is clearly a wooden structure, sticking out only a few feet from the side of the cliff. Whatever is inside, it must be miniscule... or it may go into a cave. As the Halfling's hands grasp the edge of the structure, he hears shifting inside. Before he can move, a panel swings out, just missing the dangling monk and bringing with it a stale wing smelling strongly of chemicals.

An enormous ladder made from chains and planks of wood flies out from the opening, tumbling noisily to the ground. The entire party hears two voices speaking in sync from the shack. "Well, you might as well come in, then. We have some things to discuss." The smell of chemicals is now pungent in the entire area. Tugging on the ladder proves it to be secure, and Garret hears who or whatever is inside shuffle away from the door. He can tell that they or it is fairly big. Beyond that, it is too dark for the monk to see any further into the shack.

An Unexpected Meeting -- DM Ian
Saturday December 15th, 2012 2:43:22 AM

The ladder holds true as the party makes their way into the shack. As Zeph calls out, the voices from inside laugh. "While this is true, we are leaving soon. This may be our only chance to talk. You have my word this is not a trick, should you decide to believe us." Garret is the first through the opening, which towers above the Halfling. In fact, the ladder, too, seems bigger than usual, and a casual glance would indicate that it is at least of masterwork quality. Upon entering the shack, it becomes clear that it was simply built around a cave that expands dozens of feet into the cliff. The stench of alchemical reagents and potions fills the air, choking out any other smell that the Blightlands may offer.

Deep within the cavern, a figure stands in front of a metal table filled with empty bottles, burners, and plenty of other things none of you recognise. The walls are lined with tubes filled with a red liquid that almost glows in the low light, bubbling away silently, the creatures inside as twisted as the previous. They're over eight feet tall, hooked up to a series of tubes. As you all enter the cave, it turns around, and smiles on both faces. What was once a humanoid has been enhanced by what you have already seen on these creatures -- metal plates riveted to flesh, which has been mutated beyond its usual size, and a second head protruding from beside its first. It has a vague resemblance to the creatures in the tubes, but seems larger, and the enormous sword strapped to its back would indicate that it knows how to fight. "So glad you finally made it," the heads speak at the same time. "We were wondering if you would get here on time. The preparations are nearly complete." Gesturing around to the tubes, they chuckle. "Had you gotten here later, this would all be rubble. But now we get to talk. He will like that."

The creature points to some chairs, indicating for you to sit down. "The Creator wanted to thank you for your aid in his experiments. The data from your battles was incredibly helpful. However, he will now be moving on to... bigger and better things, as it were." It pulls up an enormous chair which creaks under its weight. "What else, what else... Ah yes, you shall find the Grand Prairie quite lacking now. We were evacuating the facility there, and unfortunately could not plane-shift the entire fortress before you arrived. There were... still a few things lingering." Another smile. This one seems smarter than the other creations. One of its hands drifts to the sword on its side. "The Creator has no further quarrel with you. You have his word that Bryn Baraz will be left alone, and this facility will be no more in approximately one hour. Any further questions, heroes?"

Your Ulfgar was not a specific target, just collateral damage."

Turning to Alexi the creature takes a more serious tone. "I repeat. The Creator has no quarrel with you. You will see this quarrel laid to rest or find yourself laid to rest."

His Moral Code just won't allow such a creature to up and leave as if it's pain and suffering on others was nothing more than a mosquito itch.

Two things can happen here:
A) he is caught Flatfooted and seated - in which case Alexi's Charge Attack is a Bullrush to knock him off the chair and Prone, or
B) he stands up as Alexi Charges - in which case Alexi's Charge Attack is with his sword for real damage.

Charge Attack: d20+18+2(charge) = 35, Bullrush or dmg = d8+9+2= 12

OOC: oops, DM beat me to it. I'll add the following:

IC:"So, you don't even know where you are going in an hour from now. Do you even have an idea of how you are going to get there? If he used Planejumping, how's he going to accomplish this with you and this other 'stuff' if he's not here?"

Garret ignores the creature and starts searching the area. He says, "That thing is little more than a puppet. It cannot help us. Surely there is something here to indicate where this creator has gone." He looks for papers, drawings, or any references to any sort of location.

Keela steps over to examine the tubes where the new creatures are growing. She is trying to figure out how to destroy the tubes, or the creatures inside.

The creatures weapon is taken without incident.

"The Creator was once of the perfect race, a Minotaur, but now he has become... something more. He is not like me... he is the creator." At the mention of planejumping the creature seems confused. "I am afraid I do not understand. If you mean how do we take everything from this place... I cannot explain as it is beyond my understanding. My Creator uses both magic and science, so he is more than a mere wizard. I live only to serve, if my service requires death then so be it."

The creature nods to Zeph, "I will pass your message on, though the creator is not bothered by mere threats. I swear that your message shall reach his ear."

"One final word of warning, I would not stand close to this area after we leave. It might be hazardous to your health. That is no threat, only, anything that remains when we leave will... self-destruct."

Anrete sees nothing aside from what the Heroes do.

Garrett immediately notices that unlike when they were tracking Phezruel there are no papers or notes scattered about. This is most certainly a one man...or being, operation where one person is in charge and everyone else is in the dark.

Keela notes where the new creatures are growing. You are not certain if a heavy weapon striking the tube repeatedly would do the job or not. It doesn't seem as if it should be that easy, but they don't seem otherwise well protected.

OOC: Hey guys, just letting you guys know, there was a whole lot more to this module that unfortunately we have to scrap. There just isn't time to get through this area and to Dr. Mworag and his devices of Evil (tm). Since we only have about two weeks left I figured you guys wanted to do some wrap up in Bryn Baraz.

OOC: i figured that was the case, however I thought that any info we gained here, however slim, might be of use if the next DMs choose to use this Mworag later on.

Alexi eases up a little, only a little, and says to the group, "Well, since this place is going to self-destruct in about an hour, we should leave. However this Twice-Brainless Twit will go with us to face a Judge and Jury in Bryn Baraz. Let them decide his fate. The citizenry expect no less of us."

Keela nods. "Yes, it's worth a try."

To the two-headed being, she says: "you are under arrest. You keep saying that you don't care what we do to you, so I assume you'll be all right with coming back to town with us and answering for your crimes."

"I will submit, though I have committed no crimes again you or your people. What is your saying, do not shoot the messenger? I would point out however, that anything that does not leave this place and return to the Creator in an hour will self-destruct. Everything. You have been warned."

The Creature waits a few moments. "Shall we?"

Alexi looks at the Two-headed creep with a smirk. "Your story changes. First, you say that 'In one hour we will not be here,' implying this 'Creator' will teleport or planeshift what is here out. You strengthen this by saying 'Whether I am dead or alive, everything will be gone from this place in an hour.. No mention of any destruction so far. Then you repeat yourself, 'Yes, everything will be gone in one hour.'

But now you tell us that all that is here will self destruct, even if it is not in this cave, but many miles away, including you.

Alexi shrugs. "I'd rather see you blow up than just think you blew up. C'mon, get up. Let's go. Whatever happens in an hour, it happens. We'll just make sure we aren't holding hands at that time."

Alexi looks at his friends, "Are we done here? Garret, Keela, Zeph, Anrete, y'all (OOC: Alexi's southern accent kicks in) satisfied in your studies of this cave?"

OOC: in case DM jumps ahead an hour, Alexi will leave Mr. Two-Head tied up some 100' away when it gets close to an hour. He will also leave the sword 100' away in another direction, just in case Mr. Two-Head was very litteral in his interpretation of '...anything that remains when we leave will... self-destruct.'

Keela can't help but feel there is unfinished business, but really, there's nothing left to be done here. She joins the others in climbing down from the cave, and in keeping an eye on their strange prisoner.

"I suppose I could try to Dispel whatever effect he has that will return him to his Creator. Or make him explode. But I don't even know what the effect is. I don't even know for sure that it's magical, though I assume it must be...."

Zeph studies the room for a moment, casting detect magic on himself to search for runes or points of power of a possible Conjuration/summoning connection. (Spellcraft = 30, Perception =28).

If he can find one and possibly sever either the self destruct or teleportaion spells, he will cast Dispel Magic targeted at that point. (dispell check =27!)

"I want to ruin at least one of this guy's plan before we lose track of him" he says.
