JonathanT (Co-DM) - Over the fence, under the fence, around the fence, which way do we go? Friday December 7th, 2012 11:19:34 PM
The discussion continues over whether to continue following the magical fence in hopes of perhaps finding a gate of sorts or climb over the fence and explore the other side from their current possition. The possibility of being interlopers causes a moral dillema to some, even though Captain Theringer did give the WLAers the Go-ahead to cross the fence and explore.

DM OOC: to clarify to the newbies, when you see two Perception Checks as above, it does not mean you make two rolls. You make one roll and if that number beats the lowest but not the highest check, you get to read only the lowest. But if it beats all the checks, you get to read all of them.
:}
Now, if two seperate Perception checks are needed, say, for two seperate conditions, then I'll let you know. Sometimes that does happen.

The face of Harvest Moon grows darker. She folds her arms across her chest, less convinced now than she had been before that they should cross to the other side of the fence.
And then the giant shadows flow across the ground. Harvest Moon looks up, and a split second before Gerox Shale calls out, she knows them for what they are. "It is the Wolf Eagles," she adds. Here now is a palpable reason. Here too is a palpable excuse. Should they encounter the owners of the Magic Fence, a true apology might be offered. They would understand the need to pursue a foe. "We must catch them," calls out Harvest Moon.
Even as she speaks those words, Harvest Moon is half way to the pole. "Oh." Harvest Moon runs back to the mules and begins undoing their packs. The gear upon Eeoh tumbles loose, and spills to the ground in an chaotic heap. "Go," she tells the others. Climb. I will follow. But we cannot leave Eeoh and Sister Sarah laden and helpless."

JonathanT (Co-DM) - Over the fence we went, now where's that yellow brick road... Monday December 10th, 2012 11:59:40 PM
Most of the WLAers see the flying creatures and realize they are the same kind that had attacked Rum some months ago. Those that caught some sun in their eyes believe their friends and the mood changes from Maybe-Perhaps to go over the fence to By-Golly-Gee-Wizz-We're-Gonna-Go-Over.
Edson ties his rope around the top part of the obelisk and those that don't trust their own climbing skills use the rope to aid their ascent and descent.
Harvest and Peza unload the mules and with a word from Gerox to not wander far, set the two mules free and hide the packs in some brush.
All on the other side, Gerox all in one piece, they are ready for battle but after some 30 minutes of waiting, nothing comes. It is about 1 pm.
The terrain on this side is simmilar to the other section they just past (DM OOC: I'm assuming you entered the area where the pond was, right?) in that it is rolling hills with tall grasses and meduim sized trees spaced out here and there. The grasses come to just over Gerox's head. Although the tall grasses don't offer enough resistance to hamper movement, for small sized creatures movement is halved due the obscured vision they pose.
The pond is not far, several hundred yards at most. Although it can't bee seen due to the grasses, you've gotten a good bead on it's location as each one clambered over the fence.
The smell of grass is thick, small insects buz around, a few birds flit in the trees. Otherwise it is quiet.

After dropping down from the pole, Harvest Moon points the way. "The pond is that way. So too, did the Wolf Eagles also go in that direction."
It had been her error. Last night she should have scouted the territory around the camp. If she had done so, they might have had more warning of the Great Crabs. She will not again lapse in such a manner. As Harvest Moon moves across the grassy plain with the other League Adventurers, her attention is on the land. Things leave their mark as they pass. It is the rare creature that does not. The prints of feet in the soil. A parting of the grass. A worn trail. Their spoor. Even bits of hair. By such things, a creature might be found even before it is seen or heard.
It is to the seeking of these clues that Harvest Moon turns her efforts. To her weather ear for danger, she pays less heed. But the others will watch. Many eyes watch better than one. It is good to have friends.

Lemick watches the oversized grasshoppoers and worries about the size of the things that eat bugs that big. Still, resources being as they are, and the hunt for birds on -- Lemick attempts to catch one of these grasshoppers to be used in a future plan -- can he put a live 1-3 in an empty sack?

After a brief study of the area Peza finds what the group is looking for. The faint tracks, several days old, leading further into the area through the tall grasses. Although not directly in the direction the group saw the flying creatures flying to, it is not away from either. More or less diagonally from the direction the flying creatures were headed to.
Harvest is able to study the tracks better and figures that there's at least half a dozen of them, two of which are larger than the others. The gait at which she estimates they were traveling are clearly not wolves, canines she is quite familiar with, but not like any she's seen before.
A couple of hours later, after many more grasshoppers disturbed, the group hear a strange bark to their right. The strangeness of the bark is not to be underated. Sort of a cross between a yap, a bark, and a laugh?
A gentle breeze slightly bends the tops of the grasses but otherwise nothing seems to be moving, or what's that?!

No obelisks in sight.
Nearest tree: 78 feet. Tree is of moderate size, maybe like an apple tree. Barratore can easily reach the first branches. Picture a tallgrass prairie with a few shade tress here and there.
The tall grasses provide complete concealment as long as Stealth is being employed and distance is greater than 50 feet. Once Stealth is no longer being employed, they offer only partial concealment, 50% at distances between 50-100 feet, and 25% between 10-50 feet.
This is modified somewhat according to size. Say Gerox vs Barratore.

(OOC: they hold their action until the party reacts to the first group, so if you held your action you get to react to these others. Use your judgment according to your PC on whether your PC would react to the first group or not. I'll trust your Roleplay here.)
Two Large Hyena's spring forth and charge the group from the opposite direction as the other four. As Harvest pointed them out just moments before, the WLAers are not surprised, fortunately. If the normal sized hyenas are ugly, these two large ones are even uglier. Their massive teeth slavering in saliva!
They charge through the grasses but STOP short, 5' away and expell a wave of foul, noxious, gut wrenching, nausiating stench from their fetid mouths! (OOC: very bad dog breath)

Harvest Moon's Position ======================= 8 columns from the left (Including the beginning half column) 3 rows from the bottom (Including the beginning half row)
This placement should allow almost everyone to get in a standard action and get out of the AoE. The only one's who wouldn't be able to would be Edson and Lemick who would have to make a double move to clear the area. Brom, if he executes his attack, will also be trapped. Hope this helps.

JonathanT (Co-DM) - The Hyenas are coming! The Hyenas are coming! Dang, they're here... Monday December 17th, 2012 11:37:49 PM
Hyena Attack Recap: A pack of hyenas have been stalking the group for a short while, their mottled brown coloring lending them practically invisible in the grasses. However, they finally close in and in typical hyena fashion, they come charging making that hiddeous noise they are known for. Their cunning tactics are, however, for the first group to draw the attention of the prey and cause them to bolt in the direction of their pack leaders.
When the prey does not bolt, they pull back, drawing the prey to go afer them while the pack leaders charge from behind and 'gas' the prey. Typically, the prey scatters, faced with hyenas on both sides and the pack leader's ferocious looks, leaving the weakest behind to be devoured.
Typically.
WLAers aren't the typical prey.
Not Necessarily standing their ground, they don't 'bolt' either. However they do try to get out of the Pincer Movement against them.
Harvest, from (K,15) moves 30' to (G,19) and casts her Entangle Spell in the center of the hyena grouping.
Most everyone else follows her lead.
Gerox plows through the grass after Harvest (O,13) to (J,16) and casts his Magic Missile spell at DH2.
Barratore's readied shot goes wild. He pulls back towards Harvest and takes another shot, this time hitting his target, Hn1. Was at (K/L,12/13), now at (G/H, 16/17).
Edson holds his fire, perhaps the blur in the grasses are too much for his aim, but then has his arrow ready for the pack leaders when they come, hitting one. He knocks another arrow, but does not follow the rest (gulp).
Peza pulls back, holding her fire until she spots a target that's not jauncing around too much. Unfortunatly she still misses. Was at (M,11), now at (K,16), Note: I put her in front of Gerox for his protection, 'Spotting up near the fiery gnome ...
Brom's big heart leads him deeper into the fight to protect his buddy gnome and takes a big chunk of fur off DH2. Putting him at (P,13).
Harvest's Entangle spell goes off and the grasses and vines energize and come to life, trying to grab at all living things within their reach. DM Note: I'm going to change the center a bit for most effectiveness without affecting friends. The new center leaves Peza right at the edge but gets Gerox and Barratore out. This is end of Round 1.

Entangled Condition:
The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a --2 penalty on all attack rolls and a --4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell.
For porpose of this spell, the bonds ARE anchored, so no Movement is possible, but attacks (missile, melee adjacent) are with the above penalties.
The animal intelligence of the hyenas sense something wrong with the grasses and do their best to not get caught by the Grasses Gone Bad.
Hn1 easily slips out of the affected area and, maddened by the wound, charges Barratore, (DM OOC: you still have bow right? no AoO for reach right? Do the Horns have Reach?) Charge Att = 7, miss
Hn2 fails to escape the grasses but tries to break free, STR = 17 vs DC15. Hn2 manages to break free (A Move) and incensed, goes for Edson, circling around. No AoO for his circling move (50').
Hn3 sprang out the grasses clutches and easily rushed the few feet between it and Edson snarling and gnasing teeth, Att = 20, dmg 7, taking a huge chung of flesh out of the rogue. The rogue feels his feet slipping... Trip Att as Free, No AoO= CMB 19 vs CMD 18 - Edson is now Prone (double gulp!)
Hn4 also springs out of the clutches of the grasses. It would normally head to the downed prey, but Lemick stands in the way, so it attacks him! Att = 7, and misses.
HD1 gets grabbed by some vines and grasses and the Hyena of Unusual Size and Breath, yanks at its bonds trying to break free, STR 12 vs DC15, fail first attempt, STR 11 vs DC15, fail second attempt. DM Note 1a = 1/5
HD2 is also nabbed by vines. It's first instinct is to break free, STR 7 vs DC15, however it's wounds prevent it from doing so. In anger it lashes out at Brom, Att = 20. dmg 11. The barbarian looses 'some' hair for his fiend and feels his feet slip... Trip Att as Free, No AoO= CMB 26 vs CMD 21 - Brom is now Prone (double-triple gulp!)
DM Note: I need Edson, Brom, and Lemick save for the Entangle effects first thing. It looks like fail or save won't affect the hits or trips but you need to know if you can even get up if you wanted to. So make those Saves vs DC15 first, then move.
DM Note to Brom: you posted an attack - Brom continues his attack on the dire hyena (DH2). Attack (BAB, PA): AC14, damage 19
This would occur after you are Tripped, but a miss anyway. This was your Standard Action, you have a Move Action you can still make, if you want to.
PS. For those Entangled, you suffer a -2 to hit, and -4 dex. Sorry Brom, even at -2 to hit, HD2 got ya.

Harvest Moon skips around Barratore Steelwind to the Hyena that menaces his flank. She draws the polearm as she goes, but feels the magic of a beasts fang guide her. Instead of chopping the hyena with the polearm, Harvest Moon delivers a kick to snout of the ugly creature. Her foot is hard as a gnarled root. And ... something else ... something that she had not yet felt before. The face of a laughing man. It is Thelonious. But it is not Thelonious. The laughter is courage, and courage here, curiously, also bolsters her blow.

She knows what it is that she must do. Harvest Moon calls down another blessing. A shield of righteous force springs up to protect her. Then, scampering beneath the arms of Barratore Steelwind, she rushes to place herself between the lone remaining great hyena and the others. Harvest Moon growls a warning and brandishes the polearm in the direction of the great one. Small fierce creatures have been know to hold larger ones at bay. She then feels the coming of another blessing. It is a mysterious thing, but it feels just and it feels right. A further hand of protection falls upon her, preparing her to receive the coming of the great hyena.

"Yip!" The hyenas are routed. The maddened grasses are now more a hindrance than a help. "Go away! Be calm!" shouts Harvest Moon to the frenzied plant life. And, quite surprisingly, (to her at least) they respond. The tall grasses cease their grasping. They return to their calm swaying motion. All is as it was before.
All that remains is to dispatch the last remaining great heyena. With her polearm held at the ready, the feral half elven girl circles around from behind Barratore Steelwind. She will now harry the flank of this great beast. She will employ the tactics of the hyena against the hyena. Harvest Moon circles to the south of the snarling monster. ooc Guys we have a bead of fire that was given to us before Edson joined the group. It is no longer legal and I don't think it is worth trying to keep. Everyone but Edson needs to add 125 gps to their character sheets unless one of you feels strongly that you want to keep it.
JonathanT (Co-DM) - They're gone... Thursday December 20th, 2012 10:52:25 PM Harvest's distracting attempt proves more of an excercise as Barratore and Brom finish the Dire Hyena off with horns and sword.
Note to Edson: when firing into melee, you take a -4 to hit penalty on targets within 10' of your ally unless you have the Precise Shot Feat like Peza. Was this penalty included in your roll? If not, you missed.
The 10' rule: the Dire Hyena is Large so it is 10' long, however even the back half is not 10' away from Barratore, only 5' away.
Wasn't sure you were aware of the penalty. It is easy to forget.

I really don't want to meet a giant croc while chest deep in water. Maybe we should contact the Captain and tell him what we have seen so far."
He looks at the swamp and then over at Barratore and says, "Hey big guy, I am a slow swimmer and I bet that water is deep. Well at least deep for me. If we go in there, how about a lift?"

The group heads out, Barratore having sheathed his sword and gone back to his bow as they move. Seeing the swamp on the other side he concurs with Gerox on both what might be in the swamp, the pointless excersice of likely going into the swamp.and what they are standing in now are breeding pens

Harvest Moon (HP35/35; See AC Below) - Al d20+14=17 ; Friday December 21st, 2012 9:10:49 AM
"Wait, Gerox Shale," says Harvest Moon. And she halts his inspection of the gold bands even before he begins. She touches him with a blessing of Guidance. "That, I think, will be better."
It is a novel idea of the gnome, that these are great pens of the Beastlords. It is an interesting idea. But pens must be tended. One type of creature cannot survive alone in an area for long. It must have other creatures to eat and to maintain the lands. The grazing animals that the hyenas would eat could not easily pass the Invisible Fence.
These are, however, ideas that Harvest Moon keeps to herself. The bands seem very much the thing that a caretaker might place upon one of his or her herd. She inspects them for the markings supposed by Barratore Steelwind. These bands, she surmises, must be changed every so often while the animal grows. So, perhaps, there are some persons here somewhere who tend to these animals. Or, perhaps ... The great animal carved poled and the unfathomable invisible fence come to the mind of Harvest Moon. Perhaps ... all of this is done through magic ...
"We should camp here," says Harvest Moon when they reach the edge where the grassy plains meet the swamp. "It is the end of the day. We can camp at the corner of the Invisible Fence. In this way, things might approach us only from one direction. Also, we already know what things are on this side of the fence. And the pole will be there in the morning for us to climb to the other side."
Harvest Moon looks off in the direction in which they had seen the Wolf Eagles fly. They, most certainly, had not been penned. They were free, whereas these creatures are not. Why is this?
"Perhaps, Gerox Shale," conjectures Harvest Moon, "these pens are not for breeding. Perhaps they but cages for holding the creatures used by the Beastlords to make their true creations." If that is true, she thinks to herself, somewhere there is a pen with very large spiders.

Casting Detect Magic on the golden circlets reveals a faint magical aura but it is fading away even as the detection spell holds. The magic that once was on the golden bands must have been linked to the creature wearing them.
Looking across the magical wall of force into the next 'pen' the WLAers see a vast swamp. A day's travel through such a dismal place, fraught with unimaginable and imaginable perils, such as croccodiles, pythons, quicksand, shambling mounds, and what-not, the group decides the wisest thing to do is try to circumvent this particlar 'pen'
They head back East again, following the 'fence' and shortly, as the sun sets, they find the corner obelisk. The adjacent 'pen' to the swamp is rolling hills.
They decide to make camp in their current 'pen', at least they know what they face there. They make camp and rest, setting up watches as usual. The night passes uneventfully although loud splashing sounds can be heard off and on in the swamp.
Morning comes with a bright sun (or two, I can't remember if the Wold has one or two suns). Peza contacts Captain Theringer as is the morning custom and gives him their possition and describes the events of the day before.
Captain Theringer agrees that this looks like some kind of holding pen for specially chosen creature specimens, either to hold them after the Beastlord's done with them or before. He then tells them of more good news. The Captain began to be concerned for the their group, having to travers so deeply into enemy territory and was able to re-alocate another WLA member to help them. He will be sending him shortly through the Catacombs Representative. At this you hear him grumble some about the exhorbitant price the Merchant was asking. "It's borderline extortion, but the success of this mission is vital, and your lives are worth it." he finishes.
Fifteen minutes after Captain Theringer fades away, the familar Catacombs Merchant pops into view a dozen yards away. He's smiling from ear to ear at his fortune of making so much money for so little effort. Next to him is a human, who steps forward and introduces himself.
DM OOC: Dima, this is your moment to shine. Introduce your PC, in character, and describe what he looks like. The others will do the same.

Once again on this new day the dwarf with the magic tent comes. Again he brings with him a new member from the League Adventurers. Fresh from her morning communion, Harvest Moon comes to inspect the newcomer. The small half elfish girl, under five feet in height, looks up at him through the crest of hair that falls over her forehead, the only hair upon her otherwise shaved head. Upon her back, the polearm towers over her.
The symbol of the eye that the stranger wears tells her that he is a follower of the Gray One. He wears it as Thelonious use to wear the hammer, as she wears the gnarled, vaguely hammer shaped root that she found so that she could be just like Thelonious. "I am Harvest Moon," says Harvest Moon. The words are simple and to the point. "We must go far today, I think," she adds. "Let us leave."
Saying this, she begins the climb up the Magic Fence Pole and down the other side. After a brief difficulty, she finds her way over, where she looks about for danger and examines the ground for the signs of creatures that might present a danger to their passage.

Hert stands still for about half a minute, examining his new team. Its as if he's trying to memorize every particular feature about every person he's seeing. Conveniently enough, this gives everybody else a time to examine him.
He is a shortish human man, twenty-five or so years old. He is wearing a full plate mail, that makes a lot of clanking noises every time he moves. Surprisingly, though he seems to have worn it for the whole day, he appears to be quite comfortable in it. A bastard sword is attached to his belt and a steel shield is strapped behind his back, along with a backpack. The most noticeable thing about him, though, is the silver circlet with an symbol of an eye on it. It looks quite old, the silver is tarnished in several spots, but the eye itself is well-polished.
Finally the man speaks.
"Well, hello. My name is Hert. I am a follower of Gargul, overseer of the souls. Also a traveller and -", at this point he takes his WLA badge and shows it clearly " - an adventurer. So I can use a sword too. May our time together be long... Or at least fortunate."
He pauses for a seveal seconds and adds:

He gestures around and says, "Right now we are in some kind of zoo and we are stuck in the pens. Everytime we climb a wall, some weird mutated animal tries to eat us. I suggest you keep your sword loose and your healing spells handy. Otherwise pleasure meeting you and welcome to our..... group."
He looks to the others and says, "We really need a group name."

Hert nods politely to Harvest Moon and watches with her with a glint of envy as she easily climbs over the fence.
Then he smiles to Edson and shakes his hand. "Joining a team is always a pleasure. It is leaving that hurts."
He tries to say something to Peza, but before he says a word she is already over the fence. So he moves to the next member of the team. Barratore clearly impresses Hert. His eyes go wide for a second, but he regains composure and grabs his hand with both of his hands. He clutches them in a handshake as hard as he can and steps back. "Hert" he simply repeats and moves on to Gerox.
"I'll try to become something in the middle, then" he smiles replies to the gnome's introduction. "As for the group name... I am not the one to make decisions here."
He looks around, examining the pens and falls silent, rubbing his chin. Then he suddenly says: "I think I should introduce you to Gargul properly, though." He closes his eyes and touches the holy symbol on his forehead. It flashes with a pale white light and a light breeze blows over the entire group. It feels slightly uncomfortable, but it seems to heal magically some of the wounds.
He then tries to follow the rest over the fence. ---------------- OOC: Hert uses Channel Energy and heals the group for 2d6=8hp.

After meeting the new guy, Edson scales the wall. Dropping down easily, and scanning ahead. His doesn't look as bad as before, and his wounds have been healed do the groups magic. He has to let the little things go, he thought.
