(Philip) Kerg Halg AC 14 - CMD 19 - HP 28/28  d20+4=7 ;
Tuesday November 27th, 2012 11:49:13 PM

Kerg wades into the water and follows the others to where the centaur is pinned. After hearing the stories of disease and seeing a carrier decaying like this, he's a little wary of getting his hands dirty. It shows in his tugging. (Str check 7)

Beached Net [DM Jerry]
Wednesday November 28th, 2012 11:06:41 PM

The combinations of ideas takes care of the spear and gets the centaur pulled up onto the beach. Indeed the Centaur is wearing very nice armor that doesn't seem to be harmed by the exposure to the salt water. Predominate is his pristine backpack with a scroll case hanging from it.

Now that the entire net is up on the shore, you can investigate fully the entire scene and situation. There are mysteries here and things that just don't make sense.

Why are the fish poisoned with a more potent than usual variant of Filth Fever? Why is there a well-equipped Centaur in a Fish net near an island that is only inhabited by an old hermit? Why was this centaur both slain by a trebuchet spear, and caught in a net with poisoned fish?

It makes the mind spin!

[sorry for the short post, been a busy day and I was blocked from the site today again from work]

As soon as Spire sees the scroll case, he scampers down the rope (Climb: 12) and runs up to the corpse. Ignoring the oddities, he carefully removes the case and opens it, his eyes glowing blue as he casts Detect Magic and quickly begins to read them. (Spellcraft: 32, 17, 32)

Rafe ponders the reasoning behind what could have caused all of this and summarizes his opinion, "So centaur guy is sailing on a ship, they get attacked and he takes a ballista bolt through the body and falls overboard. Later, his body is scooped up by this net, but where's the ship? In fact, where's both ships? If there was two--which I think likely since this centaur is a bit too well dressed for a simple fishing boat. I'm thinking the orcs got them. As for the fever, well, who knows how long these dead fishies and centaur been percolating in the warm waters around."

The Scroll Case [DM Jerry]
Thursday November 29th, 2012 2:22:22 PM

The scroll case is covered with skulls and other symbols of death. Once opened, a very rich and fancy parchment of good size, smelling like daisies, is found.

The smaller one reads, "To the one who finds this parchment. Please take to any priest and have this Scroll of True Resurrection read over my body. You have my thanks and my gratitude. All praise to Gargul the God of Death and Life.

Spire pauses for a moment before closing the scroll case. He stands up and looks to the others, repeating the contents of the scroll. "I... I do not feel comfortable leaving him here." Turning to some of the crew members, he asks for help bringing the corpse to Bozzle. "He should be able to help us. This centaur..." Spire closes his eyes and bows his head for a moment. "This is a scroll of True Resurrection. We should respect his final wish."

True Resurection is a 9th level cleric spell.
Sten searches his memory for the name Gargul the God, what moral bent (alignment) is he? We need to get this right. We can't go resurecting a powerful evil person.
Knowledge General 8

Cayzle Comments: Note that in the Wold, the gods do not have alignments. They are above your petty pigeonholes. People generally like Alemi (healing) and Domi (protection) and fear Marteus (disease). Gargul (Life and Death) elicits both dread and awe. And respect. PS: Hope you do not mind my comment, Jerry!

Kerg tries to hide his whirring mind behind a mask of understanding. Most of what everyone is saying escapes him, and the name Gargul only brings up vague memories of things he was taught while a slave. The paper seems to be important though, and in a way that can help a dead creature. He had recently seen how the powers these people use can mend flesh. Could there be a power to restore life too?

Boggle waves and in his rusty high-pitched voice says, "Right up here!" He's up with the rest, recently arrived.

"I suggest getting the body back to the shack. I don't want to leave the food for long with your "partly trained" sailor cooks."

You also hear him grumbling saying, "Adventuring groups these day with their druids and new fangled alchemists. Never see a proper priest anymore. But then I'm not one either. Hope I remember how to do this."

Once back at the camp, he asks that the body be kept inside the shack and out of the elements. "Do one of you have a Freshen and say a Mend spell or something like that? Something to clean the body up a bit and make him smell better?"

Cleanest Sailors That Ever Sailed [DM Jerry]
Monday December 3rd, 2012 4:47:16 PM

Everyone is cleaned up nicely. A cleaner batch of clean smelling sailors and adventurers has never been seen!

Bozzle tests the fish and lets you do the same with whatever means you have. "Seems clean to me. Shall we eat? What are you going to do with the body. I don't want it sitting in my shack for too long."

He begins serving fish. It is exquisite! There is nothing like fresh fish caught and cooked by Bozzle. "I thought about returning once and opening a restaurant." He seems genuinely pleased by all the compliments.

The sun begins to set and the cleaning up from the meal commences. One of the sailors comes up and asks, "Where do you want us to bunk? On the ship, make camp here?"

Shall I Burn Him? [DM Jerry]
Wednesday December 5th, 2012 2:14:29 PM

During the night, second watch, a ship travels by an island over. It is spotted in the distance because it was furiously using a light source and a mirror to communicate with a 2nd ship following. The front ship was trying to make a deal with the back ship so that it wouldn't attack it. It was decided that the front ship would put 6 of their female cargo into a life boat at dawn further towards Rum and that the back ship would accept them as payment. The females seemed very happy and willing to go to the second ship so it seemed more like a rescue than selling slaves.

They were too far off to have aided, but it did make the night interesting.

Soon, it is morning. The sun comes up with an amazing sunrise. The reds and oranges melt into the setting second moon, Kerracles, making it look like an amazing giant piece of fruit.

Breakfast is coffee, from the ship, and left over fish. Before eating, the food is made fresh again with a cantrip. It tastes as good as the previous night. Amazing fish!

The old man stretches after sleeping in his porch chair and says, "Ok, it is morning. Time for the centaur to leave my house before he stinks it up and brings me bad luck!"

He looks expectantly and says, "Shall I burn him, or do you have other plans?"

Who is King Eberyon [DM Jerry]
Thursday December 6th, 2012 10:03:24 PM

Bozzle looks really surprised. "I.....can cast it but....

"You mean none of you adventurers can cast a single divine spell? I really prefer not to see Gargul. He doesn't like much."

Bozzle closes in on himself a bit and doesn't help bring the centaur out, but concentrates on cleaning up after breakfast and checking the stuff.

Jozhur and Yel'kno gets the centaur out with difficulty.

Rafe doesn't notice anyone getting sick. That's a very good thing.

Sensing that the adventurers want to be heading back to sea, the crew, works hard under Sten and Yel'kno's direction. direction to get the ship fixed. It looks like the ship can be ready to go the next morning barring any unexpected problems.

Bozzle looks strangely at Yel'kno. Why would you like to see a mushroom ring? I don't understand. And who is this King Eberyon you speak of? Is he the new ruler in that Rum town they are building or does he run your Bonetown?

Kerg enjoys his run and is happy to note that is spotted nothing unusual or disturbing. It is amazing how many times a simple run leads to danger and trouble.

Bozzle vs. Gargul [DM Jerry]
Saturday December 8th, 2012 12:31:59 AM

Very well, Spire. But I do not accept responsibility for this ending well.

Gather the group and whoever is going to represent the centaur. I suggest we do this inside. Dark business and all that. You and you! Help me put up dark curtains. I'm going to change.

Bozzle heads into the shack to change. When he emerges, he has his formal raiment on which is the color of the sea. His holy symbol is out: an octopus.

Come sit on the mats in a circle. If you have anything holy, put it on.

Someone will need to be primary for the call to Gargul. All I am doing is casting the spell. Someone will need to speak the plea for the Centaur's life. Anyone know what his name was?

Lay the centaur here in the center of our circle.

When he is finished with his orders, he waits for everyone to get settled.

Anyone have anything to confess before we begin? Gargul tends to see to the heart of the maelstrom. If you're thinking it, he'll ask about it.

For me, I should say now that I've had two bad experiences with Gargul. One time I died after making a bad decision. Innocents died because of me. He gave me the choice of coming back to fix the mistake with the families left behind or to enjoy my afterlife in the Estates of Unrest. I chose to come back.

One family could never resolve their hatred for me, so I dug up the body and tried to raise it. Turned out that the guy was evil incarnate and had abused his household. They just wouldn't tell me about it. However, scared of Gargul, I avoided him and used Reincarnate instead avoiding Gargul. Gargul hasn't liked me much since then. I wish I could undo it, but it seems I can't. And I must admit that I don't like him much either. Too straight-laced for me.

My father was a follower of Gargul. I did not follow him which caused a split between my father and I. I know that's all out of order, but I wanted to be up front. You're doing a good thing here and Gargul should realize that. Just know that if he decided to come down on me for my past, you shouldn't get involved. I wouldn't.

Then with a cheery smile, he says, "Anyone else have anything to say first?"

Just the same he helps move the centaur back inside, leaving the task of working the sailors in Tula's competent hands, and helps darken the room.

He has nothing to confess or anything holy to add to the rug so he gives a shake of his head but remains otherwise respectfully silent.

Heya! Welcome to Gargul's! [DM Jerry]
Monday December 10th, 2012 8:02:08 PM

"Very well. Let's begin."

He asks for the scroll and begins to read it. Then stops. "Whoever, crafted this scroll I hate."

The reason become evident.

"Oh holy Gargul, we come before you...insert time of ....

::a low growl emits from Bozzle::

"Oh holy Gargul, we come before you this day mourning the loss of our friend...Aziekiel Hoofstomper. We humbly petition you,...

::Bozzle's face seems to be fighting to force him to say the words::

"..the God of all Life and Death, to consider our plea to return him to...

::Bozzle's face literally turns purple by this time::

"....this sweet life. All praise your holy name."

Nothing happens for a few seconds...

...and those seconds seem like minutes.

Then, a soft wind. The curtains wave. This grows into a whirlwind. Like Dorothy and Toto, the group is caught up in the wind spinning upwards, but remaining in the same formation--like a horrible game of "Light as a Feather, Heavy as a Board" gone wrong.

Then the bottom drops out. You feel as if you are being turned inside out. A very nauseating experience!

Time stops and you feel utterly alone as you travel.

Then just as if nothing had ever happened, you arrive...wherever this is.

Opening your eyes, you are standing on grass that stings your feet. Behind you the glory of the Lands of Rest. Souls, looking like people, not spirits, walk past at various speeds. Some wave, some ignore.

In front of you, an adamantite amphitheatre towers over you and the environment. And in that temple, a throne. Sitting on it is a huge being, though it is hard from this distance to see what he looks like.

In front of him, bowing are a group of dwarves. Waiting some distance behind them, is a lone female mage--gnomish.

An imp whips around. "What tha! Another one! Busy day. Busy day. Master wants to be walkabout. But Busy day."

He grins like a cheshire cat. Skipping he comes forward. "Heya! Welcome to Gargul's.....uh place. There are two groups ahead of you. Give each some space, not that HE'd let you hear anything. Oh, and the souvenir shop is closed."

He cackles thinking that is very funny and skips back to the throne and stands by Gargul's side.

Aziekiel is not here, nor is his body.

Time passes, you think ... it is hard to say in this hyper-real, hyper-alive place.

If you make a Knowledge Planes check, DC15, the Please Highlight to display spoiler: {This is the plane of existence known as The Lands of Rest, where souls go after they have travelled from the Wold after death.}

If you make a Knowledge Religion check, DC15, the Please Highlight to display spoiler: {The imp is in fact the famous "Gimp" -- Gargul's servant.}

Time must pass, one way or another, because after some of it goes by, it is your turn to approach the throne. The man sitting there looks like a blacksmith, given his forge-scorched leather apron and muscles. His hair is black and grey -- more grey, actually. He has piercing eyes that see into you. When he speaks, although his voice is not exceptional, you cannot help but listen intently.

"You come before me seeking the return of this centaur?" he asks. From behind the throne trots a healthy-looking and not dead Hoofstomper.

"Usually I ask petitioners what they would give for the return of a soul to the living Wold. Were I to ask this of you, what price would you pay for this life?" You feel a strong compulsion to tell the truth to this god.

OOC: Many thanks to DM Jerry for taking over recently. I'll be here until Jan. 7, at which time the Wold will go through a DM Migration, and you will have new DMs for this game. I'll be trying to post each morning (New York time), so hopefully this post sets us on the right schedule.

We do not know him and already risk receiving your wrath as payment for our request of his return. We come here seeking his return purely out of charity and respect for the wishes of a fellow warrior. I'd give my life for th innocent, helpless or enslavd, but he is beyond such concerns now. Without knowing more about Master Hoofstomper my answer would be 'Nothing further'. "

The short, stubby imp jumps up and down at the side of Gargul's throne. "OOOH! ME! ME! Master, ask me! It's a trick question, ain't it? You said, 'WERE I to ask this of you, what price WOULD you pay for this life?' You did not say, 'I'm asking you, what price WILL you pay?' amiright, Master? Huh?"

Gargul nods at his servant, and Gimp seems very pleased with himself.

"Yes, mortals, I am not asking you for a payment for this life. I asked how much you would have paid, that is, what is the value you place on this life -- the life of a stranger. Yel'kno, you want to know more. Know then, that this centaur is my servant, and I am glad you have brought him to me to be restored. His work in the Wold is not done. In fact, my intention is to reward you to the extent that you value this life. If you had valued the life of a stranger to any degree, then I would have rewarded you to that degree. But in fact, you have made plain that you do not value this life. That is acceptable as well."

The god nods to you. "Thank you for returning my servant to me, that I may restore him to the living Wold. As you would have paid for this life, so I now pay you." He waves his hand, and you all feel a great LURCH!

You are all back at the hut of the hermit. The body of the centaur is gone. The hermit is lying in a quivering heap in one corner.

As you realize that you survived an encounter with a god and emerged with your lives intact, you come to see the bright side of things: At least you emerged with your lives intact! Not all adventurers do, who travel the planes to bring a petition to the god of life and death.

The experience has quite discombobulated the hermit, who can hardly talk, and who takes to bed. It is almost a week before he is himself again, and he refuses to talk about it at all.

Of the centaur, there is no sign at all. It seems that whatever mission Gargul has for Hoofstomper, it lies far from this lonely isle in the Shipwreck Shoals.

You do end up spending several more days here, as the repairs take about that long, and then it is time to go. Feel free to post your actions for the week.

Note that the Lionfish is not in tip top shape. She has an improvised mast, and her hull is more patchwork than anything else. But at least she is not taking on water!

The usual route from here is to Chessford on Liontaur Isle, which is not far away, and then on to Rum. Just to confirm, you are headed to Rum, seeking WLA offices and a branch of the Catacombs?

After marking Bozzle's islet on the charts, the trip to Chessford goes fast. And you expect your stay there to be also brief -- just enough time to maybe take on a few supplies.

Before getting to dock, the Lionfish is met by a harbor agent who comes out in a small boat to meet them. This wemic wears a strange hat -- a kind of a headband -- with feathers and beads woven into it. He calls out for your papers.

"Well, before I let you dock, I do need to see your documentation," he says. "Here's the submission pouch -- just set your papers in herre, and I'll take a quick lookie-loo." His accent, though not pronounced, suggests teeth and a jaw not quite fitting the humanoid norm.

If you let him come aboard (he seems to simply expect that you will, and will board unless you stop him), he holds out a leather bag, with a large open mouth.

Kerg takes it all in. The harbor front is busy, filled with tall taur ships as well as fishing vessels, smaller ships for human-sized folk, and a wide range of those too. There must be four dozen ocean-going vessels at these docks.

Large warehouses line the shore. There is a huge open market right off the wharfs used by fisher-taurs, filled with colorful canvas stalls, with plenty of pubs and flop houses ringing the market.

Seeing the drinking houses, Jozhur has no patience for palaver with the harbor agent. He hits the brew-pubs, eager, maybe, to see if taur ale is as good as rumors say -- and of course to see what other rumors he can discover.

Meanwhile, Yel'kno, Coer, and Spire listen to the wemic wearing the funny headband with beads and feathers woven into it. "The Red Foam Gang, and Bonetown, is it that you want to hear about? Out on his lonesome, Jozhur gets asked by a freindly liontaur barkeeper lass what his name is and what ship he sails with. She tells him a rumor that a force out of Rum is going to raid or conquer Bonetown. "Of courrse," she says, with a thick accent. "If the Bonies stay to fight, that'll be a Battle Rroyale!"

=====

Rafe stays at the ship, listless ... or follows along?

OOC1: Friends, don't worry about posting Xmas eve, Xmas Day, New Year's Eve, or New Year's Day. If you do, I'll try to respond and give you something. If not, that's OK too. If you SEEK more Woldian fun, head over to the Giggling Ghost for the annual holiday party.

OOC2: You guys all know that we are transitioning away from the Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide rules for the DM Transition on Jan. 7? Some people it affects little, others, like poor Jim, a lot. At the least, all characters have to be reconstructed on a 25 point build, and all traits are lost. Also, your wealth has to be standardized and purged of APG gear. Some things out there ... the amulets of combat, Yel'kno's ring, the magic flag that flies over the Lionfish ... are what we call "Fate Items" -- you cannot buy or sell them in the Catacombs, and if you want to keep them, then you have to rebuy them as part of your standard wealth.

You guys will start on Jan 7 at 4th level with 6,000 gp to spend on your personal gear. If you want to make or craft anything (scrolls, etc) please let me know, because we have special rules for that now. If you want to keep a Fate Item, let me know and I'll price it out for you.

Yes, Yel'kno, this means you can get our of your forced engagement, scott free. But then you'll never find out the cool things your ring does, had you only thought to Identify it! :-)

"Like I said, we shouldn't stay. They might be looking for our ship to come here." Kerg looks around warily and wishes Jozhur had waited around just a couple of minutes.

OOC: The rules change is going to make Kerg impossible to play, so I'm not so sure he's going to make it.

Cayzle Comments: You can apply to the Power That Be to make use of a rule or two from the APG -- you could petition for the things that are essential to your concept. I urge you to do so. Email me!

Jozhur tries to get some more information out of the barkeep before heading back to the Lionfish. He leans over the counter, orders another drink, and slides the Liontaur a couple of gold pieces with a huge grin on his face.

"Interesting, sounds like there is some fun to be had. Any idea who the raiders are or when they are attacking?"
Once he has his answer, he slips the barkeep two more gold pieces and heads back to the Lionfish.
"Maybe I'll see you around again."

Don't forget to update to level 4 as well

Spire grimaces at the mention of Renchild's name on their papers. So we will need better forgeries... or just some real papers, even.

"So the Bloodkin are looking for the Lionfish, good luck to them, I would not recognise the old girl with her patchwork repairs." Coer absently says aloud.

Turning to the harbour agent "Say... is there somewhere we could get some repairs or modifications for our ship? She is in need of a makeover."

~~~
ooc: i am thinking if we are looking at distancing ourselves from the bad name of the lionfish in these parts we could modify/disguise it. Perhaps rename it with new papers.
That is of course if we want to leave that fued behind.
ooc2: Cayzle, i assume the lionfish does not need any reconfiguring as part of jan reboot? If so, how?
Cayzle Comments: OH MY GOSH! Here I am worrying about some piddling little Fate Items, when I had forgotten you guys have a ship. An EXPENSIVE ship!
I gotta look into this!
OOC :: There is also the matter of our house, but that came out to a few hundred gold each, so it shouldn't be a problem.
The agent tells Coer that the work he wants done would be best done in Bonetown. He watches to see how you react to this name.
====
The bartender says it rumors say it is the WLA. Jozhur, did you give your name or the name of your ship?
No, sorry. Jozhur told everyone that his name was William and that he had best not tell anyone what ship he was with. If the barkeep calls him out on the fake name he gives his real name, but not the ship.
