Parrots and macaws squawk overhead. Somewhere in the jungle branches, creatures move unseen. The river gurgles as it flows onward towards the Floating city. Everpresent, is the heat and humidity, felt even more as the heroes move from the relative shade to the cleared area and into the wating mouths of black flies, horseflies and the omnipresent mosquito.
Ragnarok is off to follow the tracks Faust lets the others know that the tree may not be showing magic now, but he does not believe that it grew up here. Faust also suggests caution on the fungus. Toregan pulls a knife and takes a couple samples of the fungus to bring back to Gazzy, storing them in his....? Griffin is off on the trail with Ragnarok to see where it leads
Toregan notices the fungus seems to have eight roots, that hold it to the tree as he extracts the miniature mushroom, spaced four on one side and four on the other. A second fungus shows to be identical in this way.
The trail is simple to follow the 100 meters to the thick of the jungle. The divets are spaced in two distinct sets of four with about a 10 meter gap between the two sets. Another description is standing lined up to the center of the tree abouth 5 meters away to each side, are four divets, left and right. Each set of divets run in a parallel line to the jungle. The trail ends at the jungle line at an almost 15 meter wide hole about 2 meters deep in the center. The ground has a freshly dug up look and smell.

The group talks over about the fairly fresh hole and the potential danger of the fungus with Ragnarok voicing the most concern and linking the fungus tendrils to spider legs. A numeral fact repeated in the divets and rows on the tree. Still, Toregan pries one off and puts it in a pouch. Nothing unseemly happens when he does so. The fungus, at least for now, behaves like a normal fungus.
At the edge of the hole, the ground is freshly churned and Yngvar suggests verbally what many might be thinking. The tree walked from where the hole is now to its current location.
Toregan and Astern investigate the hole closely. The ranger finds small feeler roots and all indications is that yes, about 3-5 days ago, the nearly 120' monkeypod tree uprooted itself and moved to where it currently grows.
While a walking tree is certainly a clue as to what might have happened to Raven, the trail here ends and this station shows no sign of an attack.

Ragnarök, we'd be rather lucky if it were a spider...most spider monsters aren't that dangerous as long as you can stay away from the web...well, at least the ones I can think of work like that."
Once the findings that quite likely prove their 'walking tree' theory are voiced, he adds: "But...yeah, sure looks like the damn tree walked. It doesn't seem to be moving now though, ergo I don't think it's a cousin of the rabid bushes we faced off the other day. Must've been some temporary animation spell...though that still doesn't explain the mushrooms. No reason to fret however, there was no noticeable smoke or smell, few poisons behave that way, so it doesn't seem like we released toxic mushroom air and are going to die any time soon."
"Looks like the attack here was short-lived, maybe the monstrologers appeared or something else happened to startle whoever moved this tree and, I fear, possibly others elsewhere. Are there more waystations around?"

"Honestly, looks like a druid that is going to the extreme of neutrality. The way stations should be located about a day's march along the main route. One thing Randolf left out of his briefing, how many, if any, of these way stations fall under our charter to maintain. I'm inclined to consider a few days ride from the outpost in either direction, but more than that would sorely tax our capabilities."
Yngvar takes a whiff of the meal he had been working on an grimaces, "trail rations guys, this is ruined." Sighing, Yngvar takes the mush off the fire and walks off to pour it out at the far edge of the clearing.

The group returns to the waystation clearing, most content that this was not an attack site. However, there is a very big tree now quite capable of doing so. Ragnarok talks to the tree in low tones, but gets no response. For the time being it is behaving very much like a tree. Yngvar burns the boiling water and the group resorts to dried meats, bread ad cheese for their afternoon meal.
Toregan brings up Nathanial plan, 'to stop at the waystations once every few days, and that they were going to travel on the river.' So the question becomes to start hiking what the group can see to be downstream, or to dig out the raft from the vines and put it in the water. The total number of Waystations is not known by any as Mr. Randolph never mentioned them, but the magical gate was supposed to be the supply line. Logic would put them a day down river from each other at most.
The vine covered raft upon inspection shows it to still appear very sound, measuring about 12' across and perhaps 20' long

If there were no more clues in this waystation, maybe there are in the others.
As he started to remove the vines, the minotaur had a sudden thought. "What if something happens when we remove ALL the fungus from the tree? Would it be worth the risk trying it?

Ragnarök quickly counts his steps from a fix point (like one of the tents or fireplaces) to the tree. Just in case that if ever they come back here they can check if old fellow here enjoyed another stroll around the encampment or not.

And I'll help you with the raft Asteron. It'll be a lot faster than walking." With that, Toregan helps to remove that vines from the raft and move it closer to shore.
Rafting Wednesday December 12th, 2012 7:22:07 AM
Talking more about the tree and a few further investigations about it turn up nothing new. The fungus is not moving, the tree's location is counted off and with nothing more the raft is freed and placed into the river. It takes effort, but nothing the party cannot manage. Faust is able to secure a hefty sample size of fungus without incident.
The group pushes off and, with the pair of poles found with the raft when it was uncovered, start making their way down river.
The current is steady but not swift. The river varies in width some, but for the most part is about 100' wide. The jungle grows up high on both sides towering above you to heights of nearly 200'. Branches stretch out over the water providing cover from the sun, but also a feeling of entrapment, as if you were in a living tunnel. Only the middle 25' of the river gives a constant view of the open sky. Vines hang from the branches high above you and the sound of birds fil the air. Occassionally you glimpse a great gecko like lizard upon a branch, or see movement of a shadow. Other than reminding you that the jungle is full of creatures, nothing comes from any of the encounters. Near the days end, the jungle opens out to the right. Another Waystation clearing and sunk deep into the bank are two large beams about 15' apart and topped with coils of rope. Beyond is the remains of a shelter, larger than the ones at the Waystation nearest the Post. It was perhaps a 10x20 building, but is now a pile of firewood. Other similar piles, but on a smaller scale, dot the area as well throughout the clearing. The group is very quick to notice that 2 trees, though not nearly as large as the tree at the first Waystation, are next to the largest destroyed building. There are also 3 large lizards, with great sail-like fins on their back, nosing about the wreckage. Each is perhaps 15' long and even from the shore it is easy to spot the dagger like teeth within their mouths

Also thought the area where everyone but Rag was standing to be the raft... Hence the move to push away the raft and create distance between the Dino's and the group. It was in no way the intention to cowardly get behind his friends! After all Rag somewhat created this mess. Can you please add the raft to the map if the area where we now all stand isn't. Asteron sees nothing but red. Thankfully, his Fury is not blind, so he will not direct it towards his friends. But as the wounded dimetrodon retreats, he attacks with both his claws, trying to rend as much flesh as possible.

"So... now what? Do you think it is safe to search the place? It does warrant a thorough search, in my humble opinion..."

"...seriously, for a moment I thought that they were actually out to kill us. It's good to see that normal, decently predictable animals still exist in this place.", he gets on land, still with crossbow on hand and looks around suspiciously, just in case they aren't quite that lucky.
"Indeed we should investigate, but before we need to patch you up more properly. I'm sure no one here wants to be surprised by a killer plant, undead, piece of animated debris or the amazing rat-sized dragon with the local big guy still out of commission."

If there's nothing that says trouble, will drop bag to the floor, get components and start making CLW extracts for Asteron (3 in total).
OOC: Everyone, just a heads up, come Jan 7th, APG stuff will be illegal, which means the Alchemist class. Been trying to find CRB alternates for the overall Alchemist feeling (on the fly adaptability, party support and decent offensive staying power), the best options I could find are either a Blaster Sorcerer (draconic or arcane) or Evoker Wizard with some enemy control on the side, possibly with UMD to access valuable divine spells, such as CLW.
If anyone has anything to say about this, please, feel free to do so (or send me an e-mail if you wish).

I doubt the animals here would have reason to view us as anything but prey at the moment." Moving the raft to the shore, Toregan pciks up his crossbow, and reloads it, and scans the treeline. Putting away his crossbow for the moment, Toregan takes out a knife and inspects the dead dinosaurs. "We need someone to watch the trees. Make sure nothing attacks us from there. I'll dress the bodies."

The group puts into shore, the dimetrodons don not seem intent on returning and there are signs of any others lingering about. Faust takes the time to make several healing extracts for Asteron Toregan is able to dress the two dimetrodons and salvages a total of 300 gp worth of leather and trophies.
The group moves into the clearing. What once was a fairly substantial structure has been reduced to a pile of splintered timber. Growing suspiciously close is a huge sized tree. Again the group notices 8 evenly spaces rows of violet fungus growing up the trunk. Some timbers of the building seem to have been pulled away and a small cavity can be seen beneath. Blood stains some of the wood and a small pouch with the symbol of Gargul upon it is under those beams. The other tree in the clearing by a smaller pile of timbers also bears the violet fungi and something else as well. The bark has been scorched in multiple places, multiple arrows pertrudge from the bark and several deep cuts have been hewed into it.

"As for whom it was fighting...this pouch here can indicate Raven, perhaps...didn't notice if she carried one of these or not. What I really can't recall is whether she was carrying a bow or sword, maybe she wasn't alone? The scorching also hints arcane magic, though I'm not knowledgeable enough in divine spellcasting to rule the possibility out.", he then wanders close to the collapsed structure with the Gargul pouch, inspecting the area to see if there's anything else worth of notice, while also eyeing the surroundings to see if anything looks out of place...other than the obvious, that is.
"Bleh...my money's on some druid who wants to drive civilization away from Cthonia."

Ragnarok and Faust begin to examine the trees more closely. As they survey the scene, both recall that Raven did not venture out on her own. She left with Ellie, Artrius, the rescued elf and Nathanial.
Toregan begins to look more closely at the rest of the campsite and eventually make a grisly discovery. Following a trail from the largest building he finds the partially eaten remains of an elf. He is near the edge of the clearing and a hand axe lies near him. Toregan can find no tracks or evidence that others went off into the jungle. It appears a lone trail from the area of the largest building. Perhaps he panicked, but it is certain to the ranger that the others did not flee this direction. In fact, Nathanial, Ellie and Artrius can not be found anywhere about the campsite. Toregan is certain however that a fight did indeed occur about the largest debris pile where the Gargul pouch was found. A battle involving at least 2 medium sized humanoids and a large cat. The only direction of escape without leaving a trail is the river

"Not sure if we can assume they went downriver...seems logical if they were being attacked by murderous flora and/or druids, but the river's current is quite rough to travel without a raft of any such.", he begins looking around, looking for something.
"Anyone happens to know how many rafts each way station houses?
