The Long Kiss Goodnight -- Jim C Friday December 14th, 2012 11:39:51 PM A willow tree in Fall; its leaves will not be missed as much as cherry blossoms. --Senryu, 1818
Slow. Agonizing. Boredom. Restlin stirred, restless in his bed. The sun had set, darkness had swept the lands and the faint buzzing of the weather control system could be heard if listened for. Yet, in Restlin's eyes, his bedroom was awash in greys of many hues. The black of night was stayed from the mages eyes while he was in contact with the Gloom Blade--his Luck Quests reward. Absentmindedly he held the sword and tapped its tip on the floor, or whatever was in reach. Then it occurred to him, why was he playing with this sword when he should be sleeping and how could he see in the dark of his room? In the corner of his mind, between the past and hidden thoughts, in that place few venture, he heard a voice. "In the darkness I awaken my master. I shall serve thee faithfully and open your eyes when light has fallen." Restlin, while you hold the sword in natural darkness, you are granted the power of Darkvision in addition to the other powers listed for the sword.
In his litter, for no regular bed would hold him, Zeoll slept like a baby. Once or twice the Belt of Perfection spoke, but kept its voice down. <Scottish accent> "Ach, my aching back. Crushed between a fat liontaur and his shallow bedstuffing. I've had better lodgings at the leper colony." Accustomed to falling asleep when someone or something was talking to him, Zeoll simply rolled over and went back to sleep, unaware.
Bosk lay fitfully, seemingly on edge, tense about something that he just couldn't put his finger on. Was it the twin girls residing in the tower? Their very existence was an abomination to his god, Gargul, but he had done nothing to send them on their way. Would Gargul hold this against him at some future time? Contemplating on the woes of eternity and his duties as a Grim, the Minotaur drifted away to a place familiar to him and few others.
Beri couldn't get over the fact that Bosk had won himself some spring-loaded wrist sheaths. Lucky bugger that he was, the rogue began devising an intricate and clever plan to wrest the sheaths from Bosk, without it looking like he was in fact stealing them. His plan was so cunning, or so he thought, that you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel. Grinning as he dozed off, he was oblivious to the dark and its cold embrace.
Meditation was the pathway to all enlightenment. With the proper technique, one could ascend to a higher level, to a place of tranquility that few others had ever reached. Deep in such meditation, Zane blocked out all that was around him. It was all nothingness that he touched. Then the nothingness touched him back.
Wyaar had disturbing dreams before; such was the lot of those that fought evil on all levels--from the demonic possessions of madmen to the corrupt temptations that laid themselves at the paladin's feet daily. But this, this dream, no--nightmare, was more upsetting than any torture devised from the depths of the abyss than a man could stand. In his dream the proud warrior of faith rode resplendent in mithral armor atop a white stallion. His lance bearing the pennon of his house, the paladin could barely hold onto his reins as the small Halfling sitting behind him clutched and pulled at his cape yelling, "Faster, daddy! Faster!"
Down the hall a shadow fell where light should have held it at bay. It crept slow and sinister as a snake stalking its prey. Under each door it passed, splitting off from itself and continuing on to the next. Soon all that was, changed.
This place was not unfamiliar to Bosk, he had been here before and he remembered it not fondly, but with much regret. The Temple of the Illithid had remained as they, those few who had been there before, had left it. Untouched. Corrupt. Evil.
Down the steps they felt drawn, down into the darkness, and then into the massive cavern. Before them lay the great pit, an open wound in the face of the earth. Darkness drew near, it's caress a cool breath on the nape of your neck and it beckoned, it yearned for your embrace. It spoke only a single word, its voice mixed with despair and torment, "Awaken."
With a clatter, the Gloom blade hit the floor, making everyone jump. As each awoke to find they were standing in a circle downstairs, it would seem that each had sleepwalked to this area. The Iron Adventurers then noticed what they were standing in a circle about--the teleport circle. It lay on the floor, it's rune glowing, eager for someone to step on it and be sent to the Temple of the Illithid.
Everyone is fatigued.

Restlin stretches & yawns. Lazily scratch his head, he looks around & takes in his surroundings. "Team meeting then? Good. I've been meaning to talk to you guys about kitchen duty."
He casually picks up the Gloom Blade, nervous and excited about it at the same time. He didn't share Bosk's disdain for intelligent objects, but he remembered Lowd's sword & the control it exhibited. Still, it had called him master instead of the other way around. That had to count for something, right?
"I should probably tell them," he thinks to himself, "but this hardly seems like the time."
"What's with the teleportation circle? Are we going somewhere?" He looks around. "Why does everyone look so grumpy?

Wyaar lets out a shuddering breath and says a prayer to his Queen to steady his nerves. The frightful presence of a ancient dragon could not frighten him, but the the sheer horror of that dream had shaken him. The strength of his faith once again fills him and he looks about at the others and the circle in front of them.
"Indeed... what is this?"

The Long Kiss Goodnight -- Jim C Saturday December 15th, 2012 2:02:50 PM I didn't make it readily apparent, but the teleport circle is the same one that is on the piece of wood flooring that was take by the group some time ago and stored in a safe place. So this is not new, someone must have taken it out of it's storage area.

Bosk AC: 30/14/27 CMD:23 HP 64 of 64 Spells Saturday December 15th, 2012 4:02:13 PM
Bosk looks down at the teleport circle as horrifying flashes of the events that transpired on that day flash through his mind. The unspeakable acts of evil and horror that took place, that the cleric himself participated in...the children he himself had sacrificed and fed to the monster within.
He remembers how the group found the teleport circle hidden in the bottom of a wardrobe and how it had brought them to the Temple of the Illithad, the image identical to that of a painting they had found in the same hotel room the teleporter was found in. The teleporter caught them of guard, sending them underwater. When they rose out of the water they found themselves standing before the great temple. Inside they fought and destroyed an Illithad that had been plaguing Mudtown and his cursed offspring. Children from the village the group had tried to save, but the Iron Adventurer's made the mistake of exploring too deep into the temple and came upon a creature whose voice echoed in their minds, and the group found themselves shaking in fear or forced to obey its commands, and it commanded them to feed it the children... ... ... ... Bosk takes a deep breath and relays the story to the new adventurer's so that they might be mentally prepared for what was to come, speaking for the first time of the terrible role he played on that ill fated night. I am not sure what power has drawn us all here, but I think this is a sign that we cannot put off facing our past any longer. I had this teleporter safely hidden away, or so I thought, yet here it is and here we all are. I think we should do as Zeoll suggests and prepare ourselves to enter the cursed temple once again, while it is of our own choice. If we had entered just now, unprepared or armed, well I don't think the results would be pleasant. Be prepared for a mental onslaught and to buff your will and fort saves. Before the creature appeared trapped in a chamber inside the temple, but after this much time it is possible the thing has found a way out and may be waiting for us as soon as we enter the telport circle.
ooc: Can you tell us how long the walk was from the teleport circle to the chamber where the children were sacrificed was so that we can plan spell durations out accordingly?
Jim: maybe 5 minutes

Wyaar is silent a moment as he looks towards Bosk and the others that were present on their previous visit to that evil place. He moves over a places a hand on the taur, "Your body may have done evil, but it was not your mind or soul. The blame is not yours."
"And Zeoll has it right. We should prepare. If the circle has waited this long to be used it can wait a little longer. We'd be foolish to rush in now. If this doesn't smell of a trap nothing does."

"Ok, let's do this. Beats sitting around hunched over my scroll table." With that, he heads back up to his room.
"Let's see...stinky pit of unspeakable evil. I'll need my good robe for this one." He dons his robe of resplendence, boots of levitation, jewelry & fancy new quiver stocked with rods and wands. Luck quests are fun, but this felt like a job to be fully geared for. Goods prepared, he sits down and prepares his spells. It's rare for Restlin to have an idea of what he'll use his spells for in the immediate future; it's a welcome change.
"So, Mr. Sword," he mentally says to the Gloom Blade. "Do you have a name?"
After preparations are made, he appears back downstairs fully decked out w/ his new blade on his back & his sword cane in his hand where it usually is. He turns to Wyaar. "So, this is right up your alley, right? Paladin. Big stinking pit of evil. This feels good." The wizard holds up his cane & twirls it around himself. A shimmer suddenly appears around him & fades away just as quickly (mage armor).
Restlin's ready to go...

The Return -- Jim C Tuesday December 18th, 2012 12:06:21 AM My whole life long I have sharpened my sword And now, face to face with death I unsheathe it, and lo-- The blade is broken-- Alas!
--Soto, 1568
Just like before, the shock of the cold water as each Iron Adventurer found themselves underwater was almost too much for some--almost losing their breath and beginning to drown immediately. A light from above and hands reaching down helped those that floundered in the water to safety. The group stood in the ruins of an underground temple, just like the one in Vellinius' painting that they still kept in the Iron Tower. In front of them to the North was the stairway, about 50' away. Behind them were rubble and the blasted ruins of a large statue that cannot be made out. The floor behind them was also sunken, more than likely having fallen into a lower level and then filled in with water that was coming into the temple from various sources. The place smelled musty and looked ancient and no sign of anything living was near.
Without actively concentrating for the presence of evil, Wyaar is almost overwhelmed as he detects that the whole structure, every stone and metal beam, radiates evil--this means the temple is still active in its link to some evil purpose. What that purpose is, Wyaar does not know--the religion that is revered here is totally alien to him.
The group sees at the far end of the hall the open double doors that lead into the worshipping area beyond--the prior group having nothing on their minds except escape, had left the doors open behind them. Nothing is heard but the splash of water about them and no enemies can be seen on this side of the doors.
Beyond the doors what the group see's when they peer through the door way is a large hall, perhaps 100' long and 60' wide that is bathed in dim-light from the broken stain glass windows above. Columns run the length of the hall to either side with many alcoves filled with statues of indistinct busts. Above on both sides and above the doorway is a balcony that runs the length of the hall. At the far end of the hall, approximately 90' away on a raised platform, is an altar and large stone bowl in its center. At the end of the great hall, on either side, is a stairway that leads up to the balcony. In his minds-eye, Bosk remembers the balcony and Roy egging him on to kill him.
It was Beri who had moved around the other side of the altar, in the dim light, and noticed a very large 50' tall bas-relief of some alien looking creature with hundreds of tentacles on the back wall. He had also found the secret door at its base. Bosk had previously found the three depressions in the secret door and ascertained that each has been pressed once before, but was uncertain of what order at the time, except that the middle depression seemed to be a little cleaner. However during that last visit, each depression had been damaged by the blade of Maikill's axe. Even after all that damage, would the secret door mechanism still work?
Standing there, most have been drawn to silence--perhaps it is the temple itself, its oppressive nature slowly working its way into the thoughts and feelings of the group. All around them are the busts of long forgotten Illithid, their almond shaped eyes staring at you as if they could see right through you. The massive bas-relief on the altar wall with its many tentacled god looms over the group. No sounds but the constant fall of water from outside permeate the great hall--then you hear footsteps.
Behind you, peering into through the double doors is a scraggly figure that looks like he's been on a deserted island for two years with nothing to eat but grass and rats. Could it be? Yes, it had to be; It was Valla!
Please welcome Valla back into the game :)

"Valla, I have bad news. That tower you bought is haunted. That will have to wait, however, since we have an ancient evil to go get rid of." The wizard keeps a straight face during the entire process. He either has a poor memory, or his sense of humor is evolving.
He listens to what Valla has to say about whatever's in that pit.

Bosk mutters something unintelligible about the girls.
Once More into Darkness -- Jim C Wednesday December 19th, 2012 2:50:58 AM
Deciding to take the lead, Bosk presses the buttons and there is a trembling in the ground. Within a few seconds, a large part of the wall moves back and then to the side to reveal a long set of stone stairs that descend down into abject darkness. The stale air of a thousand rotting dead bodies once again issues forth from the dark stairway, filling the great hall with the stench of death and decay. No sounds, no movement is forthcoming, just darkness and decay.
The group decides to descend into the darkness, with Bosk second in line with his lantern keeping the dark at bay. With Beri in front and searching for traps, the going is slow. At first when the group enters, the walls were slightly damp with moisture, the common musty smell replaced completely by the stench of rotting corpses somewhere far below. Also, the passageway down the steps were "man-made" with slate and granite lining the walls and steps. However, about 100' down, the slate walls abruptly end in roughhewn earth and stone.
The granite steps continue down into the dark for another 500' until the group comes to an opening. The air is oppressive, heavy with the smell of corpses and a languid warmth that pricks at the flesh. Shining his light past the opening, Bosk and the others see that the stairs have lead all this way to a large naturally formed cavern about 400' in diameter. The stairs continue down to the floor of the cavern some 50' below. In the center of the cavern is a large pit, a sinkhole if you will, of about 100' in diameter. Eight continual flame braziers equally spaced about the perimeter of the sinkhole mark it's edge.
The group see's no other movement in the cavern or anything else unusual.

Restlin whips out a handkerchief & ties it around his mouth/nose. "It's going to take a lot of lavender to get this smell off me," he quips absent-mindedly. Fear grips him. They could be on another plane of existence. They're about to face an unknown, ancient evil.
Then he remembers what Bosk once said. "It is they who should be afraid of us!" or something like that. The wizard reaches back and pulls his extend rod from his efficient quiver (free action?) before using it to cast invisibility on himself (10 minute duration - standard action). He levitates 20 feet into the air (move action), then looks to his left and shifts himself 15' in that direction (swift action). He aims to be somewhere different w/o getting any closer to that pit.

I'm losing the teleportation school in the upcoming changes. By golly I intend to use it before that happens!

100' down and the glow of the torches above begin to fade into the dark. Warm fetid air rises slowly, bringing with it a stronger, musty, fecal stench. The footing below your feet begins to narrow and become less defined--as if the workers had begun to hasten their cutting and with it, the quality of the work had decreased.

You can make Perception checks at -20 to pinpoint the location of creatures by sound. The DC ranges from -10 for battle to 10 to hear a creature walking normally to a sneaky creature's stealth check. And there's a -1 per ten ft distance modifier.
Zeoll listens hard as the light dims. He tries to hear the person in front of him, so that he does not step on the fellow's heels. He tries to hear the person behind him so that he knows he is there. He rolls a 31, or an 11 to pinpoint locations, which should be enough to walk in line with his friends even in the pitch dark.

I do not know, But this I do... Never again will it harm another Never again will it cause the shame The regret--that gnawing feeling Making me hollow inside.
With barely enough light to see the steps in front of them, the group continues bravely, or foolishly some would say, down the stairwell. It seems as if time had been stretched out--how long had they been walking precariously on these stone steps?
The smell grew stronger as they traveled deeper into the pit, and so too the darkness. It was palatable, as if you could reach out and touch it, beyond the thin veil of light that protected the group from the unknown.

With the way brightly lit now by Bosk's daylight spell and the addition of other light in the group, the fear of stumbling into one another is alleviated, but so is the group's element of surprise. Restlin finds that his sword, Gloomy, becomes dormant even in dim light and he would have to move out in front of the group more than 120' for the sword and it's powers to awaken.
Below, the pit bottom still cannot be seen. At this slow pace, and occasionally looking for traps, it may take gods know how long. Looking up, the group estimates they have traveled approximately 100' downward in a spiral so far.
David F posting for Zane Sunday December 23rd, 2012 7:02:08 PM
With enough light to see by from all of the other sources, Zane does not worry for his footing. What he does realize is that not being able to see very far makes his bow kind of pointless. As he moves he reaches back and puts the bow in his quiver. With a thought his quarter staff pops up and he pulls that out instead, the better to feel along if he needs to.

Dressed in a white dress that matches her pale skin, the little girl with raven hair and solid black eyes looks up at the group and says, "I have been waiting so long. I wasn't sure you would answer my summons. Now that you're here, I AM SO HUNGRY." She opens her mouth and several black tentacles erupt from her orifice, stretching her mouth impossibly, then her face rips open and the rest of the beast lunges forward from her mutilated carcass.
She is approximately 100 feet from you. You all are still on the stairs. Jumping down into the pit will hurt (8d6); She cannot be charged since it's not a straight line to her. Tentacles, many, are coming at you and will attack next round.

DM Jim, are the tentacles each a separate individual, or are they attached to the monstrosity / girl thing?
Zeoll does his best to try to figure out what is going on ... with what are they faced? He makes a knowledge check ... the raw roll is a 14, which is Knowledge (Dungeoneering) 26 for aberrations, which maybe this is? It that roll gives Zeoll enough info to use his bard performance, he will do so.
If not, he'll use a memory domain reroll ... that gives him a revised result of 28.
So Zeoll either uses perform to help his friends against this thing, or he spends his time straining to recall some needed info. If the perform works, then it gives a "+1 insight bonus to AC and on attack rolls and saving throws against exceptional, supernatural, and spell-like abilities used by creatures of that specific kind of monster."
With his remaining move action, Zeoll back up the stairs a bit.

Challenging the black beast of the temple, Wyaar bravely jumps out and flies towards his foe, like some hero of old.
Concentrating on the creature before him, Zeoll realizes he's never heard of such a creature and can offer no help to the others in defeating it. Not wishing to stay at the forefront of battle, he tries to move to the back, but the narrow steps; this friends in his way, and his large frame finds that he cannot make such a tactical retreat.
Giving his usual smart-arse remark, Restlin casts Black Tentacles on the growing beast, but finds it is just too slimy to be grappled just right now. Activating any magic item is a standard action unless the item description states otherwise. It's been 5 minutes since you cast MA and Invis.
Zane, in an act of acrobatic impossibilities, makes his way around his companions further down the stairs and recasts his Shield spell. He figures he's about 60 from the bottom of the pit at this time.
Casting Freedom of Movement so as not to get grappled by the black beast, Bosk activates his boots of speed and try as he might, cannot get around Beri in front of him without bashing him into the wall. His footing slipping on the stones and moving at a greatly enhanced speed, the minotaur flails about and falls off the steps down into the pit--landing about 40' from the beast. Bosk takes 30pts of falling damage and is prone.
Grinning as he casts his fireball, Valla calls out to the beast and blasts it with burning flames as he moves down the stairs.
From the mutilated body of the girl, a black creature akin to a large octopus with 8 eyes (two vertical rows of four) and numerous tentacles, gargantuan in size, finishes egressing from the interdimensional space that the girl had provided it. With it tentacles, Wyaar, Bosk, Beri and Valla are struck soundly and each feel the life being sucked out of them through the razor rimmed sucker pads lining said tentacles.

Quipping that is may have not been a fantastic idea afterall, Restlin hurridly extricates a scroll of Haste from his person and casts it on everyone except Valla and himself. Using his new power of shifting, he moves 15' further down the staircase (now 70' above the pit).
Wincing at the pain of the attack, Valla casts a fireball at the creature and maybe due to the stress of combat, the spell is't very effective, but placement is as it burns deep in the creature. Moving up away from battle, Valla pulls out his potion of Blink to use. (100' above pit).
Zeoll finds he just can't move around on this narrow 3' wide staircase. Calling out to the great tentacled beast, the creature turns one of his eight eyes at the Liontaur and winks. Obviously he didn't take the Cradled Seer's suggestion to heart--maybe because he doesn't have one.
Focusing his Ki, Zane charges headlong into the beast. Whatever attempt needed to avoid the incoming attacks of opportunity aren't needed as a tentacle flies by Zanes face, missing him by a mile. Upon reaching the creature, the minotaur monk delivers an impressive stunning blow which causes the creature to shudder, but not stun him.
Healing himself with his paladin ability, Wyaar then sends four deadly arrows down towards the beast, but only the first one injures it as it buries itself deep into it's slimy black flesh.
Not needing to activate his Boots of Speed, due to Restlins Haste spell, Beri thinks he could reach the bottom of the stairs if he does nothing else.
Waiting on Beri and Bosks actions before processing the creatures.

Zane feels his body grow, gaining both vitality and strength. He has felt this before, and knows that now is the time to strike. He launches a flurry of blows, enhanced by the haste spell and his new size. Zane is now huge.
1st attack hits AC 18, miss flurry hits AC 19 , miss Haste hits AC 26 for 18 damage + 8 holy damage
Already feeling the pain from the first Hit, Zane puts all of his eggs in one basket and pushes his ki to the limit and squeezes in one more attack
Ki attack hits AC 21( use a hero point to bump this to hit AC 23) for 27 damage + 6 holy damage
Panting from the exertion Zane curses his inability to connect on the first two strikes, they were just too feeble to get through the beast's hide. Knowing he had to make this count Zane uses some of his heroic resolve to hit just a little harder on his ki strike.
All attacks are blunt, magic, holy and good

Even though he is barely in range of the beasts tentacles, Wyaar doesn't move as he sends another four arrows at the creature, two of which sink deep into the black flesh of the demigod causing it much pain.
Wanting to help Zane flank the beast with a Hound Archon, Restlin figures he would have to move full speed immediately to get down to the bottom of the stairs, then shift to get into position to place the Archon to help (next round), or cast it from here and have the Archon move into position, possibly drawing any attacks of opportunity in the doing os such( let me know which action you want to take).
Zeoll stays put and begins to summon a Fey Friend.
Also moving to help Zane, Valla drops his potion of Blink--which bounces off the steps into the pit where it shatters and then casts Enlarge Person on Zane--but it will take some time, not quickly enough to help him in his next series of attacks (casting time 1 round).
Not yet affected by Valla's spell, Zane attacks with a flurry of blows, yet only one hits solidly, despite his best efforts.(at end of this round, before the beginning of the next, Zane will be huge)
Recalling his Grace spell, Bosk casts it upon himself, then activates his Boots of Speed and casts a CCW on himself--which draws an attack and hits him solidly, breaking his concentration and preventing him from healing himself, causing him to fall unconscious.
Bosk takes 25pts damage from an AOO(read Grace, it does not affect spellcasting) and does not heal the 29pts from the CCW, so he should be at -1. Please make a stabilize roll.
Beri runs to get into a flanking position--the beast paying him no attention as it was occupied with Bosk's attempt to cast spells within it's reach. He soon finds himself flanking the great creature with Zane's help.
Striking out at those two who are hurting it, Wyaar almost laughs as the beast swings wildly and slaps itself, but the next attack is nearly a critical one as Wyaar is slammed hard with its counterattack (Take 13pts damage)
Zane isn't as lucky as he's hit twice, however, the second blow is so feeble he thinks his sister would have hit him harder (Zane takes 34pts damage).
1 round of action please
Zane is now Huge
Zeoll's Fey Friend shows up
Restlins monster can show up now and move/charge, or he can wait to place it next turn and have it make a full attack round--up to him.

Like quick needlework against the beast, Beri's rapiers find it almost impossible to pierce the dense flesh, but one attack does succeed, drawing a spray of black ichor that coats the rogues blade.
Staying where he is, Wyaar fires again another volley of arrows and two sink deep causing the creature to cry out in pain.
Restlin's conjured monster surges forth from it's summoned area to engage the beast, hopefully to take notice away from Bosk and his perilous condition. (no rolls for attack?)
Saying his goodbyes as he fears the group is heading for the end of it's career, Zane pummels the creature mercilessly, ripping flesh as his fists tear into the beast three times.
Somehow, maybe it was the close proximity of the others, or the natural grounding of the earth below it, but the beast manages to shake off most of Valla's javelin of lightning as it sails through the air, lighting the pit and all it's remains of the deceased in a brief instant before it hits.
Zeolls summons are heard by an assassin vine. If an assassin vine could speak, it would more than likely scream out in fear at seeing the gargantuan beast it's meant to fight. It however does honor the summons and try as it might, however unsuccessfully, to slam the great black beast.
With arrows flying from above, rapiers and fists of fury from below, the beast from the pit ignores Bosk and Zeoll who has now appeared next to him and works to kill those hurting him the most.
With a slimy slap to the chest, Beri is slammed hard with a black tentacle that breaks a few ribs (take 35pts damage)
Attacking upwards, Wyaar is hit twice with the arms of the creature, that drive hardened spikes into him, penetrating his armor. (take 35pts damage)
With a final bash of his tentacle, the creature slams Zane to the ground, unmoving. (take 17pts damage)

Try as he might, the assassin vine whips once more ineffectively at the gargantuan creature before, while it's summoner Zeoll heals Bosk to bring him back to consciousness.
With a superb swing of his blade, Restlin's hound archon cuts open a huge swath of flesh in the black beast, but fails to do the same with his followup swing. Restlin continues to fly upward and tells his sword, Gloomy, of a possible bad ending to all of this--the sword simply responds, "Until darkness claims us." (you are now 150' above the creature.)
Unseen to the normal eye, Zane's internal bleeding begins to clot and for now he is stable.
The paladin of Maab once more exacts his vengeance on the black beast as he sinks three more arrows into it, this time causing the creature to cry out in great pain, louder than before. If the paladin could tell from the eight solid black eyes he would be sure to know that all eight eyes were solely focused on him.
Throwing his last javelin of lightning, Valla grimaces as he sees it misses most of the beast. Determining he will have to move down the stairs to get in range of a scorching ray, the mage rushes to do so.
Healed partially and conscious, Bosk plays dead--or at attempts to as he grasps his holy symbol and releases a visible burst of energy that heals those in the immediate area. (this should affect Zane, Bosk, Zeoll, and Valla)
Stumbling back from the severe blow of the tentacle, Beri quickly downs a potion of healing, getting much needed relief.
Very angry at Wyaar, the creature strikes out at the paladin and hits him hard enough to cause him to become unconscious. The paladin flies and smacks into the wall of the pit and slowly drifts down to the pit's floor, where he lays on the bones of dead children, dying. (take 20pts damage)
Turning his attention to the Hound Archon, the creature drops a tentacle or two on him, severely injuring him (hound takes 40hp).
Seeing a liontaur so close and trying to heal someone, the black beast lashes out at Zeoll and hits him soundly. (take 18pts damage).

Zeoll takes 18 and then heals 11 ... now down 7.
Assassin Vine (round 3 of 8): Tries a third time ... attacks at +7 = an 11 = miss.
Zeoll moves over to Zane. That surely provokes an AoO, but Zeoll figures he can take it, and it gets him to his friend in need. Then he uses the staff to cure Zane: 17 hp curing (plus the 11 from Bosk). Plus then Bosk can stand up, the big scaredy-taur!

With his hound archon smashed into nothingness, Restlin from his position high above the black beast lets loose a magical feather token, which promptly turns into an anchor--A COLOSSAL SIZED ANCHOR. The sudden appearance of the 65' long metal anchor pushes Restlin out of the way as it suddenly expands and begins it's freefall down to it's target. Those below, those that survive this day, will remember the moment they saw such a huge anchor appear out of nowhere and smash into the great creature, much to it's surprise--losing two of it's eyes in the process as the tip of the anchor pops them out of their sockets and then lays on top of it. Yet, even this is not enough to kill it outright, it still lives.
Having moved in range, Valla burns a horrid scar across then beast with his scorching ray. If it could scream even more, it would.
Channeling his energy again, Bosk heals those around him, while still trying to play dead--but not very convincingly.
Risking harm to himself, Zeoll moves forward to heal Zane and gets slammed with a black tentacle for his efforts, (AoO, take 22pts damage) but manages to still heal Zane.
Seeing Zeoll getting attacked, Bosk takes his chance and struggles to his hooves (now standing).
Stabbing like a madman, Beri--with inspiration from Zeoll's spell, pierces the creatures hide twice more, and twice more the deep thrusts are answered by sprays of black ichor.
Healed partially by Bosks channeling, Wyaar rises into the air due to his magical armor, pulls out a spear and throws it with all the strength he can muster at the creature, sinking it deep into the side of the beasts oblong head.
Zane is conscious and can take two rounds of action so I can post now.
The creature, on it's last legs--the weight of the anchor crushing him, the multiple arrows, torn flesh and spells thrown at him getting past his natural damage reduction are almost too much, but it fights on and lashes out.
Wyaar is the first to be hit and it once again it slams him to the ground and unconscious (take 16pts damage).
Beri is next as it back-tentacles him with a strong blow (take 16pts damage).
Zeoll is the unfortunate receipient of a very strong slam to his back, possibly breaking it and sending him into a painful cloud of unconsciousness (take 28pts damage).
Finally it is Bosk, now risen to his hooves, that receives the last blow that nearly sends him flat on his back once again (take 22pts damage).
1 round please and I will post as soon as possible, even if it's from my iPhone.
Zane may take 2 rounds of action since he was conscious on this round, but hadn't posted yet.
p.s. I rolled randomly for the size and damage of the anchor... I couldn't believe it was colossal sized, lol :)

Moaning in pain, Zeoll remains unconscious but at least he is stable for the moment.
Yelling from above, Restlin lets loose with a fireball from his favorite wand, Vera. It blossoms above the creature and burns delightfully to the mage's satisfaction, scorching the black flesh from it's carapace.
"Daddy, daddy, wake up!" comes the voice of the small halfling child in the ears of Wyaar, but he's not responding, his blood continues to trickle from his mouth as he continues to slowly die.
Calling upon the power of his bonded weapon, Valla also unleashes a fireball on the black beast of the pit, but it doesn't strike as precisely as Restlin's had.
Throwing caution to the wind, Zane had fed a potion to Zeoll to help him recover, and it has worked. Feeble, yet conscious, Zeoll watches as Zane jumps to his feet, almost dodges a blow to the chest from an incoming tentacle, but rolls with the punch well enough to deliver another solid blow against the creature--driving his hand into the beast past his elbow. (Zane takes 8pts of AoO damage. Lucky!)
Reaching for his sword, but not finding it, Bosk insteads brings out his newly acquired fruitcake--such an insidious confection and harder than adamantine some would say, that he lunges forward and clubs the beast in the raw hole that once was one of it's eight eyes.
Striking from behind again, this time Beri just doesn't seem to be able to pierce the tough hide of the beast.
Shuddering from the lack of blood and gasping for air, the great beast lashes out at Zane to drive him back and hits him solidly. (Zane takes 21pts damage)
Also lashing out at Bosk, the minotaur is slammed with a huge bloody black tentacle that nearly knocks the wind out of him. (Bosk takes 23pts damage)
The Assassin Vine ceases to exist as a huge tentacle slams it into non-descript vegetable matter (Assassin vine takes 19pts damage).
Beri also receives a lashing from a tentacles that breaks another rib (Beri takes 23pts damage).

The black beast cries out as its attempt to dominate the wills of his intended prey fail, "No... no, this cannot be, I am all powerful! I am eternal!" His cries are swiftly replied with a well-placed fireball from Restlin that burns away and then turns to ashes half of his skull. Valla also peppers the beast with multiple cold attacks that hit deep to the core of the creature. Yet it is Zane who rises up from Zeoll's healing, dodges a tentacle intent on sending him once more into darkness, and with the help of the liontaurs inspirational magic, drives his hand like a spear deep into the black beast--finds its heart, and rips it clean from its body.
The great black beast, demigod of the Illithid--devourer of children, throws off its mortal coil. Giving into the pain that assailed its body, the creature shudders and gasps for one last time. Beri noisily bites into his second healing cookie, watching in grim satisfaction as the creature that had caused the Iron Adventurers such shame so long ago, dies.
As the company assesses the situation, who needs healing and so forth, they start feeling a sense of calm overwhelming them. Could Zeoll have cast his well-known spell over the group? No. As the group looks about they see the glowing incorporeal spirits of those that had been sacrificed rise from their scattered skeletal remains. The pit area begins to swell with the light of those fed to the beast, their spirits rising slowly, their faces alight with the smiles of being free at last. Their voices, cries of laughter and joy rise with them as they ascend to journey to the Lands of Rest--a thousand or more innocent souls. So overwhelming is the positive energy being released in the sacrificial tomb, that the wounds of the those injured are completely healed--until the end when the last pair of souls, a pair of twins that had been sacrificed by the group, smile to the group, join hands and rise to join the rest to find peace.
The natural darkness soon returns, but is held back by the groups light spells. Restlin, not wishing to take any chances, places a few well-placed fireballs on the black beast of the pit, turning it completely to ashes. Gathering themselves and finding Bosks fruitcake a little charred--probably making it taste better, the group leaves the pit and teleports back home, safe and secure in the knowledge that this great evil they have vanquished will never return. Looking at the board that held the inscribed teleport circle to the temple, the careful eye can see the board has become warped and cracked along one of the inscribed magic circle lines and the magic is slowly ebbing away. Eventually the magic is gone and it is one less magic item the group must hide to keep out of the hands of those that would use it to do harm. Filled with positive energy and the knowledge that they have done great good for the Wold and for all of those lost souls formerly trapped in the pit, the Iron Adventurers take a little time to rest and reflect on what they have done--all within the warmth of their home and amongst fellow friends.
Thus concludes this module. Everyone is 8th level and receive 2 hero points for a job well done.
Also, each character has received a Sacred Gift. The next time your character fails a saving throw, it will automatically be passed thanks to saving the souls of all those children. One use only and on the first failed saving throw.
This also concludes my stint here as DM. It has been an honor and a privilege to DM you guys--you are the best, hands down. It has been a joy reading your posts and seeing your reactions to the precarious situations I have placed you in and I will miss it immensely. Good luck, good fortune and good health to you in your gaming and personal lives. I'll see ya around the boards, but I will always think fondly of the time we have spent here together. In the immortal words of Carol Burnett, I leave singing:
I'm so glad we had this time together, Just to have a laugh, or sing a song. Seems we just get started and before you know it Comes the time we have to say, "So long".
So long my friends :)

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 21/14/19 CMD: 15 HP: 50/50 (Spells) - Mage Armor: 1hr d20+15=30 ; d20+15=21 ; Sunday January 6th, 2013 8:26:04 PM
Restlin watches as the souls depart. Satisfied that the beast is gone, he puts Vera back in his quiver. He looks to Bosk, hopeful that the minotaur can find some peace, but also hoping he doesn't lose that edge they've all come to love.
Once everyone is settled, Restlin takes off using the rest of his fly spell. He'll levitate up once the spell runs out. As he leaves his companion's light behind, he begins talking to Gloomy.
"You know, Gloomy. That may have been the only colossal anchor token in all the Wold, and I picked it up on a whim because...well, I'm not sure why I did. Just seemed like a good idea. I haven't been scratched in the last several adventures with the exception of Finn killing me, and that led to finding you and getting to ride a dragon. On top of all that, I manage to find a ring with one more use that saves me from becoming that thing's pet. Gloomy, I know a hint when I see one. You and I have work to do..."
The wizard arrives back home & watches the portal disappear. Exhausted, he retires to his room.
When he wakes up, he heads off to the WLA, finds the greenest adventurer he can find and hands him his remaining Ring of Delayed Doom. He finds a struggling wizard and hands him his extend metamagic rod. He sees a young boy trying to sneak up on his master & passes him his magical dagger. He finds two quarreling sorcerers & hands each a single wand. "Take care of Vera," he says to the shorter of the two. Lastly, he walks up to a mighty looking knight who can't seem to stop tripping over his own two feet & hands him a ring of feather falling.
He offers no explanation, saying only "it must be your lucky day," with a wink before moving on.
He makes a quick trip around mudtown trading in some of his more powerful enchanted items for weaker versions. He takes the money he earns in the process & purchases a small amount of platinum. Returning to the tower with a spring in his step & a whistle on his tongue, he heads up to his lavish room & breaks out the masterwork jeweler's kit. Working diligently & breaking only for meals & sleep, he crafts a masterful symbol of Wardd with a fine chain to match. When he is finished, he shines his light on it & is pleased. It is nearly the pinnacle of his ability. He slips the thing around his neck & offers his service to Wardd, god of luck.
Friends, he is as surprised as anyone when he receives a response.

Mr. Jim, the honor is mine! I've spent all weekend refreshing this page, a behavior you've caused on many occasions. Thank you for one heck of a ride, and for humoring a wanna-be Mendicant.
Zeoll (HP15 of 49, AC24, CMD15) Sunday January 6th, 2013 8:40:38 PM
Zeoll watches in wonder as the souls fly away, and he strangely feels some part of his own soul join them and depart too.
When he stands up, he feels that this experience has altered him in profound ways.
But as he looks inward, he sees that he is still himself ... a liontaur born to a small distant isle, a hunter and lover of nature, an enchanting singer and lover of magic, and a seer who follows the urgings of his heart.
"Come my frriends," he says, with as strong an accent as ever. "I think we have yet morre adventurres ahead of us."
==========
Jim, I picked this game for my second PC because of your DMing, and we have had a great run. Many thanks!

OOC JIm, I have never had you as a DM before in The Wold. I hope that changes. The amount and quality of your description of the events and the rhythm and pace you set were awesome. Thank you. As for the rest of you guys, thanks for taking me in as Zane's replacement. He is in rehab now and we have been working on his character all weekend. Zane won't be a monk, nor a minotaur anymore, but he will still be a frontliner for you guys so long as you can keep John from making him a boom-mage.
Valla Crudarian HP: 42/45 AC: 17/f14/t13 CMD:19 *Cats Grace/5mins* Sunday January 6th, 2013 10:34:18 PM
Valla watches the souls depart silently, his stare unwavering. how much longer would I have lasted without my friends showing up. How much longer until I too, was fed to this unholy beast god.
A genuine smile paints the scared face of this hurt elf. It stays for a few minutes and then he follows everyone back through the teleporter he couldn't seem to find so long ago. Once back in the tower he is very surprised to see how its been decorated, and them keeping an open room for him, Zeoll forseering his return no doubt. He takes some time to redo his bow and make himself a new cloak and super cool backpack.
After his time of crafting a bit, he finds time to do some research and fill his spell book a bit more. knowledge is power, Magic is Gold. Power and Gold rule the Wold. A slogan hes come to know as truth here in Hook City at least.
Finally he spends a few gold and time to add personal touches to his room. Mounting his fathers staff above his Darkwood bed, on the opposite side he creates his own arcane mark, The Crudarion Crest. Covering most of the wall opposite his bed, and finally a darkwood crafted trunk under his window, a simple lock protects what few things from his childhood he was able to keep over the years.
After spending the first few days back in Hook City alone, he finally gets out, goes to the catacombs and does some shopping and then finally spends time with his friends, new and old.
So, hows Hook City been treating everyone? Restlin, care to do a bit of spell sharing? Bosk, are you still that thread? Seems as though nothings changed in two years..

Zane Stormfront AC 27 CMD 23 HP 63/63 Sunday January 6th, 2013 11:27:12 PM
Zane, upon returning to the tower goes to his room and begins to meditate.
Outside the tower a sevre storm cloud is churning and appears to be getting stronger by the minute. Eventually Zane leaves his room for the open sky of the towers roof top guarden. As he sits there enjoying the storm cloud, a booming voice is heard by those in the tower. "No,no,no. This is all wrong, I need to correct this before it goes any further".
After that had been said, a bolt of lightning strikes Zane. Instead of killing him he transforms into a bronze dragon. The dragon gets struck by the second lightning bolt. This caused the bronze to peel of, allowing the red hide to be revieled. With the third lightning strike,Zane is once more transformed.
Where Zane was standing, there is now a slender Surface Drow. He has a lighter shade of blueish grey skin, his hair is stark white, except for a streak of purple down the middle. Only his back tattoo seems to remain of the old him.
Zeoll (HP15 of 49, AC24, CMD15) Monday January 7th, 2013 1:06:39 AM
Zeoll comes up to the roof just in time to see Zane change into a drow.
He has strong words for his friend, who he has seen undergo an incredible transformation.
