A week goes by in rather uneventful fashion. The town gets back to normal after the celebration ad people get back to work.

Mid morning a week later a rider rushes towards the gates of town, waving wildly and yelling. He barely manages to rein his horse in at the gates before it falls over exhausted and sporting several gashes on its legs and flanks. The rider barely manages to scramble away and avoid being pinned before getting to his feet and looking to the closest person. He is a young man, maybe 17 years old, with an unruly mop of hair on his head and simple sturdy clothes. His eyes are wild and panicked. "Wolves are after me! And they shot my brother! My Pa's farm! "

He doesn't make the most sense, but is interrupted by the deep howl of a wolf followed by several others.

Is Alexi with Lobo or not? 50 < # says yes, 49 > # says no: 12, not with Lobo.

Alexi happens to be in the temple when the Bryn Town Alarm in the gate tower goes off (there are two towers at each end of the gate, plus several towers on the walls all they way to the cliffs.)

He grabs his backpack, always in hand's reach, and rushes to the gates to find out what the emergency is.

Anrete was practicing his sword forms (basically swinging his massive sword around wildly) at the courtyard when he noticed the commotion at the gate.

"Watup at e gate?", he remarked to himself, before striding over to see the collapsing youth. "First time ye heard of a wolf using a bow!"

"Ye heard the lad! Close the gate! Ready ye bows and slings!", Anrete bellows loudly as he tries to close the gate before more wolves appear.

Garret was resting in the sun on some warm grass on a rise, watching Anrete swing his sword. He smiles and laughs, every now and then adding a comment, "Oh, that was a nice swing." "You know, that thing really looks heavy."

When the alarm sounds from the gate, Garret quickly moves to his feet. His fingers touch the tattoo on his neck, and his skin turns a slight bit darker (casting Barkskin). Without saying a word, he moves faster than a small halfling should be able to move as he runs to the gate. He attempts to get just past the new arrival if possible, to shield him from whatever is chasing him.

The mop-topped youth sees the quartet of heroes converging on the open gate of the town and begins to lurch quickly to the protection it affords.

"Hurry--matter...of...life and...dehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..." Even as the lad gasps out his urgings, he only manages to get within maybe thirty feet of the gate before tumbling face-first to the ground.

He moves no longer.

And the howls are getting closer...they seem to match several large, dark forms racing towards the downed horse and human...

DM OOC: The collapsed horse is about 40 feet out from the gate; the unmoving rider is about 30 feet out from the gate. DM Jon will let you know what is fast approaching.

Emerging for the land surrounding the walled town are eight black, shaggy wolves the size of horses. Their loping gait quickly closes ground with the fallen horse and gate as they rush forward, drawn by the smell of blood.

The wolves are 100' from the gate.

"Ye' lads gonna have canine stew tonight!"

Anrete smacks his lip in anticipation before grabbing a nearby militaman. "Ye' got grab that laddy and I will fend off our dinner!"

The savagely armored barbarian then ambles leisurely out of the gate. "Here doggy doggy!", Anrete bellows loudly as he readies a wickedly pointed javelin. "Let's play stick!"

Note to DM: I suppose we will only venture out as far as the youth fell and stand firm there while the gate guards carry the youth to the safety of a gate tower.

Seeing the gate guards take hold of the youth, Alexi trusts the Temple clerics and accolytes to see to it the lad does not die.

Joining Anrete, Alexi casts Bull's Strength upon himself and readies his shield and flail.
"Oh great. Dog for supper," he mumbles, then he yells, "Close those gates!". To Anrete he says, "Garret can surely just jump over, and I'd rather have Keela on top of the wall casting her spells, not down here."

Bull's Strength: +4 strength, 3min duration. 30/30

Garret steps forward with Anrete, just to his right. He takes up a stance and carefully watches the wolves approach. He prepares for their arrival with his fist held low, eyeing the creature carefully as it comes towards him.

Two guardsmen rush forward to drag the collapsed youth into the safety of the city gates as the wolves move in. One receives a gash along its side as the javelin scores along it and let's out a painful yelp, but continues on its way.

Spotting the heroes as a new threat the wolves slow down and move to enclose the group in a semi circle, but so not yet close the distance. The wolves stand some 20' distant from the group outside the gates (I think ?) and at least 15' apart as they growl, pacing as they assess this new threat in between their meal.

The gates are forced closed once the youth is dragged inside and a few guards send bolts down at the wolves, but none hit.

Hoping to scare the wolves off, Keela casts a Scorching Ray. She gets three of them this time, which is new. She sends one to each of three wolves, hoping to give them enough of a singe to make them give up and go away.

[Hit Touch AC 27 for 14 damage. Hit Touch AC 29 (Critical threat; confirmed to Touch AC 22) for 11 damage, or 24 damage if it's a critical hit. Hit Touch AC 18 for 14 damage.]

Anrete's volley of javelin manages to sink one into the shoulder of wolf he has wounded before, but the others only sink into the dirt around them. The wounded wolf lets out a surprised yelp right before one of Keela's fiery rays slam into it and it crashes into the earth, twitching.

The recently married wizard's other rays land on two other wolves inciting yelps and howls, but instead of fleeing it spurs them into action and the ring of wolves charges in.

Three (W2, W3, W4) go for Garret with one circling around looking to hamstring the tasty looking halfling while the other two engage him from the front. The first to reach the monk earns a hearty smack and doesn't look well afterward, but one of the others takes a small nip out of the monk (Garret take 8 damage)

Two (W5, W6) go for Anrete, again one circling to the side to put him between them so at least one has a chance at the back of his legs, but they're unable to sink teeth into flesh.

The remaining two (W7 and W8) charge at Alexi with snapping jaws, but are only get mouthfuls of metal.

Guards on the wall continue to fire at the wolves, but have yet to find their mark.

"Eat steel!", Anrete whispered harshly as he dances easily among the dire wolf, his greatsword slashing in great powerful arcs.

Burning with cold fury, Anrete nearly split Garret into halves with one of his headsplitter. Unconcerned by the near miss, the barbarian leaps back before suddenly dashing forward again in attempt to spit the approaching dire wolf upon his blade.

Keela grasps her Lesser Rod of Quicken and uses it to cast a quick barrage of Magic Missiles at the most wounded wolf [which seems to be W6 at this point.] Glowing balls of light slam into the creature, doing 17 points of damage.

Then Keela targets one of the uninjured wolves [let's go with W8] with a Baleful Polymorph. W8 must succeed on a DC 23 Fortitude save or be turned into a rabbit. If the wolf fails its Fortitude save, it must then make a DC 23 Will save. If it fails the Will save, hilarity will ensue.

Garret simply ignores the nip and unleashes a flurry of blows (5 monk Flurry + 1 Haste) on W3:
On his first attack he uses Improved Vital Strike:

Garret then takes a 5' step back to join the line with Anrete and Alexi. At this point they are still in a straight line I think.

Anrete simply butchers the wolves foolish enough to try him )and almost Garret as well

Alexi moves to a more defensible position and smacks one of the wolves with his flail

Keela's magic missiles slam into the wolf Alexi hit with a sizzle before she turns another wolf into a rabbit.

Garret slaps the life out of one of the wolves in front of him and nearly does another

The wolves meanwhile realize they're outmatched as their numbers suddenly dwindle... And a tasty rabbit appears! One of the wolves snatches up the rabbit and runs off towards he wilderness with his remaining packmates behind him.

Take AOO if you want.

Dropping out from his rage, Anrete pants slightly as he glared at the fleeing beast.

Once the lankly barbarian recovers sufficiently, he turns toward to check on the fallen lad. "So how's the lad?"

I dun think Garret can have improved vital strike, cuz one of the requirement is BAB +11, only a pure fighter type like me, can have this feat at this level.

OOC: your right. I was in a hurry and didn't even notice it. I was going of his CS. We'll have to ask him about how he figured Garret qualified for it. As is, for this attack, just Vital Strike was enough. Heh.

Alexi lets the huge wolves go. Like he could chase them down, pft. Anrete shows concern for the youth but Alexi says, "To the horses! We must follow those wolves and check on this man's farm. He said something about his parents. Maybe our priests will have brought him to consciousness by the time we have our horses ready."

Att that he runs to the stables and saddles up Lobo. Grabbing his lance on the way out, Alexi returns to the gate to hear the youth's story, if conscious (OOC: should be, with a couple of CLW from the clerics).

DM can figure out how many rounds it will take to get the horses saddled and back to the gate.

Keela scrambles down from the wall.

"By all means, let's check on the farm, but I don't think there's a need to chase the wolves," she says, hurrying toward the stables. "Hopefully they've learned to leave the town alone."

She does her best to saddle Daisy, and isn't too proud to accept help from anybody who might offer.

While the group is saddling up, Keela (if possible) casts a Telepathic Link on the party.

"This guy don't look too good..." one of the town guardsmen who had helped to drag the young rider behind the safety of the wall announces, poking at one shoulder of the still-unconscious youth.

"Yeah...looks like he's been grazed by arrows or sumptin'..." another one adds. "All dat AND the gods only know how long he been ridin' to get here..."

Keela, from her vantage point atop the barricading wall, spies what looks like another rider approaching Bryn Baraz...a rider that the retreating wolves seem to veer away from as they flee for the safety of their usual haunts...

Garret helps attent to the youth, being he has no horse. He adminsters what First Aid he knows and takes good look at the fellow.

OOC to DMs: the farms of Bryn Baraz are not spread out far and wide. Everyone knows everyone. Even by now Alexi, a Newcomer for the current residents (Post Al Mathir) would have meet most, if not all. As a matter of fact, he and his family were probably at the wedding.

IC: Heal check +6 DC15 (first aid) = 13, Garret's first attempt fails,
Second attempt = 16, success! Stops the bleeding and stabilizes him.

Garret recognizes the youth and knows where his farm is. He's ready to take off as soon as the mounted contigent arrives.

IC: When Keela comes barging into the stables, she tells them of the new rider and how the Dire Wolves avoided him.

Alexi looks at her as she speaks and tries not to show much emotion. He's kind of glad that they've lost their telepathic link.

"After the whuppin' they got from us, I can't blame 'em," he says smiling as he finishes saddling Lobo. He eyes Keela from the corner of his eyes. She knows very well how to saddle horses by now, only helping her put the heavy saddle on Daisy, for expedience sake, nothing more.

[OOC: I'm not really sure what the sequence of events is here. Keela saw the rider from atop the wall, but decided to go saddle up anyway? I guess that's the easiest. Unless Donna meant to say that Keela saw the rider and that changed things and there wasn't time to go saddle up? Did the Telepathic Bond get cast? How many rounds have elapsed?]

Garrett recognizes the boy, but without a lick of knowledge about the local town other than what's common, he can't place the name or location of the farm for the relative new comers other than that they're on the very edge of the Orbs influence.

"So what is ye up? Anything to do with the boy yonder?", Anrete indicates at the fallen rider.

To clarify: Keela witnessed the approach of the rider before leaving her vantage point at the top of the wall. Keela also noted that the wolves were not on a direct approach to the incoming rider, but they did sort of veer farther away from the mounted person rather than try to attack and/or eat them.

Whether that's because the animals were still leery of humanoids after taking a butt-kicking from the party or because the approaching rider is Evil Incarnate has yet to be determined (mwuhahahahahaha...!)

I mean...the lone rider is at the closed gate now. Hopefully the lone rider will take this hint and post a descriptive passage so that the party (and the guards at the gate) will know what they see.

And Keela did not get to cast Telepathic Link during the battle--she may opt to cast it now if she wishes.

The rider, yes, that rider, on a steed that can only be described as otherworldly, and probably the source of the wolves decision to avoid any approach to that rider. The steed's coloration is unusual, a midnight black head and body with glowing ruby red eyes. The mane and tail flickering like grey smoke rising off it's coat, and small clouds of smoke that don't quite seem to touch the ground where hooves would normally be found.

And while the pace of the horse appeared quite sedate, the speed was something to behold, as it and its rider quickly pulled up before the recently closed gates of the city of Bryn Baraz.

The rider's dark cloak is pulled close and can be seen to be of several shades of grey as the rider stands before the gates, with only a single gloved hand held forth to hold the reins. Two bulges visible over the shoulders of the rider betray the presence of something hidden under the cloak. The rider slowly swings their head back and forth surveying the area before reaching up to slide back the hood of the cloak. Red curly hair adorns the elven features of the rider as she looks to the top of the gates.

Sliding one side of the cloak back and over her shoulder, one of the lumps is shown to be a finely crafted sword hilt. On the breast of the rider's clothing is an inlayed emblem of a star and gavel. "Bryn Baraz! Open your gates, for justice has come to you!"

Alexi is currious about this newcomer. Two riders in two minutes. One would think it was Fair Day or Market Day, in Bryn Baraz.

Mounting up he wishes to wait for Keela but nudges Lobo out of the stables and gallops over to the gates to see Garret talking to someone on the other side.

"Yes, best diplomacy ever. Put the smallest guy up front to talk. Make 'em think we are all shorties," Alexi chuckles as he reaches the gates.

"Garret, who's that out there?"

One of the guards on the gates calls down, "I think the priest have a cream that can help with that! Heard it itches awful."

But, seeing no reason not to, they move to open the recently closed gate to let the rider enter.

Meanwhile, the priests have roused the fallen youth...

Keela takes in the sight of the stranger. "Alemi's love!" she murmurs as she tugs a reluctant Daisy closer to the scene. "Um....sir, is your horse on fire?"

"A thousand pardons!" one of the priests who had come to heal the injured rider says. "What with the excitement of Mistress Keela's wedding and all, we completely forgot to announce to Bryn Baraz that we'd be getting our very own justicar!" The cleric bows to the newest newcomer and addresses her directly:

"You are the promised justicar, yes...?"

Before that question can be answered, however, the revived rider interrupts with a babble of very excited speech...

"Raiders!" he blurts out almost incoherently. "Raiders done attacked the ranch! Ma got shot in a leg...an' Izzak's hurt bad...an'...an'..." The youth (no more than perhaps fourteen or fifteen years old) bursts into tears.

"An' I don't know what happened to Pa..." he blubbers, "...he pitched me onto Charger's back an' told me to ride for help...so I did..."

Alexi belts out a laugh.
"No, Arete, what he means is that now it is his job to bring the evil doers home for trial. I'm off the hook! Yippeeee!"

While Garret gets the farm location from the revived youth, alexi introduces himself to the Justicar of Bryn Baraz.

Alexi is of average height for a human, in his mid 20's. He wears full plate that now carries the emblem of Domi on the front. He carries a steel shield, lance, flail, longsword, handaxe, dagger, and short composite bow. He is astride a supperb warhorse wearing chain bardin.

"Garret? You got the directions yet? Time is not on our side."

Cyniq ignores the jests and comments, its nothing new to her. Though the mistaken gender is.

Nodding to the priest "Your request for a justicar was granted, Cyniq al'Lyz, at your service."

"If you would have it, I would assist you with these raiders, it is my calling."

Cyniq, a female elf of early years, sports a small hand crossbow in addition to the sword, she is not wearing armor.

Plainly ignoring the newcomer, Anrete hops onto Copper. "Let's get on with it! Where's ye farm laddy!"

Anrete is a lean and sinewy human youth of below average height armored in a suit of strange-interlocking plates. Slung across his back is a massive serrated greatsword and a quiver of javelins. The savage-looking barbarian with rust-colored eyes is now currently mounted on a large shaggy-looking mountain pony of undetermined temperament.

"What--what did we need a justiciar for?" Keela wonders.

But that's another question for another time. Keela mounts her horse.

"I'm Keela Youngblood," she tells the newcomer. "And we're about to go investigate an attack--would you like to join us?"

Keela is an unarmored human woman wearing an ordinary dress, armed only with a staff. Her mount is a large, placid mare.

Healed But Still Panicked Rider (DM Donna)

The wild-eyed boy calms a bit when he hears that the heroes of Bryn Baraz are, indeed, going to help out his family. He gulps air a time or two.

"The Bar Zero is south and west of here..." He goes on to describe an area that everyone recognizes as being between the town and the badlands. (Well, everyone but Cyniq, because she's new here.)

"I...I'd show ya the way..." the youth says even though his voice shakes, "...but...well, my horse is too plumb tuckered out!"

Alexi apreciates the youth's courage but obviously he's not all together yet. The homestead he mentioned would be easy to find. There was only one way out of the box canyon Bryn Baraz was in, and they had to pass all the homesteads on the way out. And they'd been in and out many, many times.

"Don't you worry, boy, we know where it is. We'll be there as fast as our horses can get us there. You stay put and let the temple healers take care of you."

OOC: I'd blame it on the DM to not describe you properly. :)

IC: Alexi's attention to the female type figure had been primarily attuned to Keela's, until recently, and had not really noticed that the Justicar of Bryn Baraz was a female. However, now that his attention to the youth was not necessary, he actually notices the justiciar has a female voice and a body to match.

Alexi chuckles. Too bad Jet wasn't here.

"Let's git," he says and takes off towards the farm.
