ROUND 7 - DM Ian Tuesday February 5th, 2013 9:55:38 AM ROUND 7
Harvest makes sure one of the creatures remain alive before preparing to release the others still entangled.
Barratore chops through the two nearest enemies, felling the kobold with ease!
Hert moves to ready himself for when the other enemies will be released.
Edson moves to help his friends and flank his enemies.
Brom steps forward, finishing off the remaining freed kobold!
Peza readies an action to attack the nearest kobold should it decide to continue fighting.
Gerox does the same with his spells, not wanting to attack a fleeing creature.
Seeing it stands alone, the last kobold turns to run, only to have Barratore cut it down with ease. Harvest, presumably in the next round, lets her spell fade. The kobolds take one look at the heroes and rein their lizards around to run away. They splash into the shallow river before disappearing from sight, screeching the same awful language they had been yelling the entire combat. The jungle once again returns to its peaceful state, the only sounds being the rushing water in the distance and the rustling of the trees.
Great combat, everyone! Please add 1,000 EXP to your character sheets!

She had listened carefully to the shouts and cries of the Small Eyes. There were many words that she had also heard from the Small Eyes that they had encountered in the tunnels under Rum. Learning one language, as she had found when learning the Stone Language of Bralin the Stonesinger, is not so different from learning another. Once one has the knack, a second and a third becomes easier.
These are the thoughts that Harvest Moon thinks as she goes from one Small Eyes to the next stabilizing those that she might save. The wounds upon some of the Small Eyes are terrible, vivid testimony to the might of Barratore Steelwind and Brom the Raging Man. Out of eleven fallen bodies of these Small Eyes, Harvest Moon finds half or less that might be saved.
"We must bind them," she says after the bodies of the Small Eyes have been gathered together. "I will try to wake them after that." She touches the living body of the Small Eyes of the Feathered Hat, and from that touch gains a knowing of these Small Eyes. The language of the Small Eyes is similar to that spoken by great dragons. That is good to know.
"I can speak with them," she tells the other League Adventurers. "I have been listening to their language. I will wake them, and we will speak. Be ready," she warns before calling upon a blessing as she had seen Hert of Gargul do only minutes before.

He looks pale and exhausted from the fight, breathing heavily and doesn't really seem to be aware of his surroundings for about a minute or so.
Then he takes the waterskin out of his backpack. He drinks some water in several gulps, washes his face and cleans his face a little. After freshening up, he picks up and sheathes his sword, muttering weakly "I'll never get used to this sort of stuff...", sounding a bit apologetic.
Seeing Harvest taking care of the enemies, he joins her. He checks each of the fallen kobolds. The dead ones he puts in more calm positions, resting their weapons on their chests and whispers short indistinct prayers over each of them. To those who are still alive, but dying, he will give basic help, bandaging their wounds and stopping their bleeding.
"Will we save them?" he asks once all (if any) survivors are gathered and secured.

Something clicks for Harvest as she begins to understand the kobold's language. Going around to each of the bodies, she sees that only two have a chance of being saved -- the one wearing the headdress, and another nearby that one. From her domain power, she gleans that these are tribal kobolds, likely set up somewhere deep in the jungle of this island.
Hert helps his ally stabilize and heal the kobolds, laying to rest the ones that have enough corpse left to be restful.
Barratore seems to disagree with his allies' compassion and busies himself with cleaning his blade. The minotaur then heads to the river to see what he can see. Harvest Moon looks after the others as they leave the trail and go to ... a river. Have they come so far already? That remains to be seen. She calls upon a blessing of Guidance to begin. A small edge for something she's unaccustomed to doing. Then Harvest Moon releases a burst of bright healing light, feeling some of her own wounds close as the jungle is bathed in goodness. Then she offers a hand to the Small Eyes of the Feathered Hat as he ... or is it she ... rises from unconsciousness.
"I Harvest Moon," she begins with her imperfect command of the language of the Small Eyes. "We sorrow for coming to your territory. But we seek one who burned many our ships. We bring law to this one." She reaches for her book, and the magic haversack offers it up with ease. Opening to the page with her recently drawn map, she shows it to the Small Eyes of the Feathered Hat. "We know he use this river."
"That river is this river?" she asks, pointing from the book to the river at which her fellow League Adventurers currently explore. "This one who we seek. Is up river? Is down river?" she asks.
There is something different in speaking with kindness to a foe. It is a very unusual feeling from simply shouting at them and driving them off. And yet, it is, in a way, a very gratifying thing, muses Harvest Moon. Harvest Moon observes the Small Eyes of the Feathered Hat with great care, guaging its reaction to her words.

The group beings to make their way downriver (I assume?). They move without problems for a few hours before Harvest notices movement in the bushes. The size of the creatures would indicate lizard-riding kobolds, but whenever they get close enough to be noticed, they soon turn tail and run back into the jungle. While the rushing river that rages to the south covers the sound you are all making, the clear area about ten feet on either side of the water provides anyone watching with a clear view of the heroes.
The kobolds go so far as to fire arrows at the group before retreating. How do you retaliate, if at all? Two hours have passed since the battle as the suns hang high in the sky over the heroes' heads.

"Monkeys behave in such a manner," scowls Harvest Moon as the Small Eyes harass their march. "If you slay one with a bolt, Peza, I think that they will learn and cease to bother us."
"However, it may not be best to travel along the river. It is easier, but the Pirate King will have watchers and we will be seen. Better would be to find a trail that goes within the jungle but still follows the river. The Small Eyes ... The Kobolds have found some. They must have, to follow and shoot at us with arrows."
Harvest Moon searches for a trail.

All Is Most Definitely Not Quiet - DM Ian Tuesday February 12th, 2013 12:14:03 PM Harvest voices her concerns with continuing their travels along the river, as the group is far more likely to be seen this way. There seems to be no set trail in the jungle, but it would be easy for the half-elf to track through the woods while keeping on the same path.
Brom brings up the idea that they keep the river close to avoid getting surrounded as they did before.
Gerox launches another magic missile at their enemies, the unmistakable sound of an injured kobold reaching his ears. The arrows cease after this, and the gnome is unsure if this is because they have simply stopped firing, or have left.
Between that and Peza's intimidation, the group is sure the kobolds must have left them alone by this point.
Un fortunately, Edson can still tell that the "Small Eyes" are still hot on their trail, simply holding back a bit further from the group. He concurs with his monk ally, voting to move into the forest.
Hert wonders if the kobolds will follow them right up to the wall of the pirate stronghold, agreeing that they should make haste.
Moving through the jungle is a much slowly process as Harvest picks through the foliage, leading the group further south. As the suns begin to fall in the sky, a few more arrows land among the group, accompanied by a well-placed spear near Barratore's feet. The group can see the kobolds in the foliage, but they quickly disappear, giving anyone with a ranged weapon out a chance to hit back. Barratore releases an arrow into the trees, his ears greeting with the familiar screech of a kobold. The minotaur is all for exterminating the pests.
Edson takes cover from the latest assault, proposing a ruse to lure out the kobolds with a trap.
Harvest realizes these shots are not to kill, wondering if the kobolds are simply trying to herd them. But towards what? Searching for an easily defensible camp will take some time, but Harvest is up to the task.
Hert is hesitant about camping in the jungle, thinking that the kobolds will simply have more time to amass their troops.
Peza reminds the party of their true quest here, The Pirate King of Rum. (Add 1 Small Short Spear to your inventory.)
Brom simply seems exasperated, switching his sword for his ranged weapon.
As the group continues on, Harvest keeps an eye out for any ideal camping spots. It is another hour before the group falls upon one; a small clearing, thirty by fifteen feet at the most, with an enormous tree on the eastern side. The roots claw out from the ground, creating almost a cave between them and the earth. It would be nearly impossible to see anyone hiding in there if you covered the entrance sufficiently, and the clearing would make for a good campground. It is perhaps 1-2 hours before the suns set, and the group still sees no signs of the Pirate King or his stronghold. The kobolds' attacks have grown less and less frequent, but each assault draws the same results as before.
Please set up three watches to get through the night, assuming you all decide to camp.

His sword is sheathed and his shield lies beside him, while he simply observes the surroundings, and tries to perceive sounds of kobolds preparing an attack, as difficult as it may be with all the sounds of a night in jungle. From time to time he mumbles quiet indistinct phrases, apparently not in Common.

The first watch passes without incident. The jungle remains quiet, even the wildlife having died down a bit as the moon begins to make its journey across the night sky.
During the second watch, Harvest notices movement in the distance. It is difficult to tell what moves in the dark, but it is definitely approaching their camp from the north. As she signals Edson, the movement stops for a moment before beginning again slowly. The elf easily spots the intruder now, his eyes faring better in the inky blackness of the night. The movement stops about twenty feet short of the small clearing and a small head pokes out of the bushes. Unfortunately, it peers right at the tree Harvest is sitting in.
The kobold lets out a screech before retreating back into the woods. (Edson and Harvest can both make attacks on the retreating creature with a 20% miss chance.) On the edge of their vision, the two can see many things, presumably kobolds, mobilizing towards their position.
The group now has two rounds of actions before the enemy is upon them! Waking someone up is a swift action (but there are ways to wake up more than one person at once -- which may give away your positions), waking up is a swift action, and standing up is a move action. Anyone not currently on a watch is asleep, presumably in the small root-cave described earlier (including Barratore -- it's just big enough to fit him, although it's cozy). Please put your two rounds of actions in your next post!

She is discovered, and there is no longer any sense in remaining hidden. "Kobolds!" calls out Harvest Moon. She uses the name that the other League Adventurers best know them by rather than the name that she herself prefers. This is done with thought and deliberation within the timeless space of judgement and decision. "ALARM! Kobolds come!"
She calls upon a blessing to grant her a Shield of her Faith. Her eyes quickly take in the night, hoping to count the numbers of their foes before she slips from her current place and off to her right. It would be advantageous to catch one of the Small Eyes by surprise within the brush and the night. It would be advantageous, thinks Harvest Moon to herself as she draws her polearm and silently curses the brambles that rustle as she passes.
Still, she crouches with the polearm ready, hidden behind the screening of a bush. Perhaps one of the Small Eyes will be unlucky. It will come her way unawares, and she will strike.

In the near-complete darkness he finds his holy symbol and puts it on his head, and wields his shield and sword. With an expression of regret he leaves his armor lying on the ground.
Instead, he rummages thorough his possessions to take out a piece of paper with several runes on it. He reads them aloud, touching Barratore's armor.
After that, he walks out into the darkness, shielding himself from possible attacks.

ROUND 1 - DM Ian Tuesday February 19th, 2013 4:13:59 PM
With the enemies fast approaching, Harvest cries out to wake up her allies, quickly casting a protection spell before crouching in wait for any enemies.
Gerox literally vanishes in the darkness, ducking into the bushes as he looks for any enemies.
Hert laments his level of preparation, grabbing a scroll to cast on his ally before moving out of their small camp.
Peza launches a sunrod into the darkness, lighting up the surrounding area and revealing the attacking kobolds!
Brom prepares to show no mercy for their enemies as he charges into the fray. While the torch on his belt makes him a bigger target, it reveals the enemies around him.
Edson sends an arrow into the retreating kobold, a smile on his face as he prepares another.
Barratore charges through the clearing, making quick work of two kobolds with a single swipe!
A kobold lights a torch in the darkness, seemingly getting ready to throw it at the group. Many more emerge from the shadows, bearing weapons, but none carrying lizards. Anyone caring to check can tell that there are more on the way, judging by the sound of rustling bushes and tiny feet stomping the ground.
Same rules as last time. Brown area is clearing, anything more than 20ft. away in green area has concealment, 20% miss chance. Grey areas area trees too big to see around, breaking line of sight. Red dots are torches.

Peza levels her crossbow, dropping one of the kobolds with ease. These ones seem a bit weaker than their counterparts, but that may be simply because this is the first of what seems like many waves.
Brom's rage proves fruitful as he dashes a kobold's brain on the dirt! The torch in its hands drops to the ground. It sputters for a moment, but remains lit. However, the foliage in the area may be subject to fire, and a forest fire might be a bit much for the heroes.
Edson strikes at another kobold, felling it in one shot! (Brom had already taken care of #6, redirected your attack to #7.)
Hert charges into the fray, swinging his sword with such ferocity that it feels like a miss -- but the cleric simply shredded through its flesh so easily that it felt as though he was cutting through nothing! He does not spot a distinctive leader in the area.
Barratore moves to the side, swinging his sword in a wide arc that his small enemies duck under with ease.
Gerox moves through the battle unseen, preparing to unleash a torrent of fire once the second wave arrives.

Perhaps they are ill. Perhaps mad, speculates Harvest Moon as she contemplates why it might be that the Small Eyes throw their lives away with such abandon. What could be of such value here that they would die to protect it? Or is their hate so large? It is difficult to imagine. Could these Small Eyes too be different from the ones that they had encountered in the tunnels under Rum? The Small Eyes of the Tunnels seemed to find no disadvantage in the darkness. How else to explain the reason that these Jungle Small Eyes throw torches? Unless, it is their intention to set the jungle ablaze. If so, there are much better ways to do so, ways in which they need not rush to their deaths.
In such a manner does Harvest Moon seek to expand her knowing by questioning what is before her, even to her last breath, even as she fights for her life and the lives of her fellow League Adventurers. She rushes back across the field of contention to a place at which she can put her back to a great tree. There she delivers a solid kick to the ribs of another Small Eyes. Above them both, Harvest Moon swings the polearm. The wicked blade cleaves the air, threatening any who might think, unwisely, that the back of Harvest Moon is not protected.

Then he looks around. He looks at Brom, mutilating yet another kobold in his rage. He winces at Peza telling everyone to leave no kobold alive. "This turned into a damn bloodbath..." he says sorrowfully. He opens his mouth, wanting to add more, but realizes that everyone is focused on the combat. He sighs and walks up to the nearest surviving kobold. Grabbing his sword with both hands he hits enemy weapon, in attempt to make them drop it. He then looks them straight in the eye and simply says "Run.", pointing his sword suggestively to the jungle.

ROUND 5 - DM Ian d20+5=10 ; d20+5=17 ; d6+2=5 ; Monday February 25th, 2013 10:32:55 AM Harvest determines that the kobolds are indeed working with this Cow-Man, striking down the nearest one before getting some space between her and the archer.
Brom shows no mercy, slicing through another kobold with ease!
Peza takes aim, waiting for the kobold to let its defence down before finding its weak point with a well-placed bolt.
Edson grows frustrated with his attacker, swinging wildly with his kukri.
Gerox lashes out with multiple force missiles, but gets distracted by the wildlife soon after.
Most of Barratore's targets are dead by the time he readies another attack, and so he simply strikes down the nearest enemy without a second thought!
The archer screams as Hert knocks the bow from its hands. The dragonkin freezes for a moment, staring at the cleric in terror before turning on its heel and tearing off into the forest without a word.
The remaining lizard lashes out at the sorcerer Gerox, missing his leg with its snapping jaws!
Edson's attacker keeps pressing, stabbing the elf for 5 damage!
As many of the kobolds lie dead, the heroes hear a familiar horn sound out from behind them. Whipping around, they can see the outlines of four more kobold riders in the clearing. But the one in the middle is different -- it bears the brightly coloured feathered headdress from before. Whether or not it is the same kobold, it cannot be said, but the decoration seems the same.

More Small Eyes. Harvest Moon abandons the tree. She leaps and bounds - a small springing jungle animal carrying a long pole at the end of which is fixed a wicked curved blade. Harvest Moon places herself protectively between her friend Peza and this new threat. Fiercely she growls, readying to strike out at the first Small Eyes that approaches near enough for a punch or a kick.
"This time, you will be slain," she says to the one in the Feathered Hat. She speaks as though this one is the same as the Small Eyes Chief she had mistakenly shown mercy to earlier in the day. It is difficult, in truth, to say this for sure. But, in this case, truth is irrelevant. "This time, I will take your Hat of Feathers for my own."

The Smoke Clears... - DM Ian Thursday February 28th, 2013 1:42:41 PM
The heroes swarm the remaining kobolds, cutting down the last of their enemies. The riding lizard of #10 scurries off into the underbrush, losing itself in the foliage. As Harvest and Brom come down on the leader, it screeches with horror before bring run through with a sword. Brom lets out a mighty roar as the kobold goes limp, its bloodstained headdress tumbling softly to the dirt.
The clearing is still. The only sound is the heroes heavy breathing and the sound of running in the distance. As they stop to listen, the group can tell that whatever or whoever is running is definitely running away from them. Harvest can make out snippets of conversation in Draconic that sound something like "run", "run away", and "oh Gods, run away".
Soon, the kobolds have retreated into the jungle, leaving the heroes bloodied and bruised, but standing. A few places on the ground remain blackened and scorched, smoking from the kobold mage's attack. It lies bleeding on the ground, not unconscious, but clearly dead.
The moon hangs directly over your head, illuminating the jungle effectively. In the background, the river rushes on constantly, surging south towards the Pirate King.
Harvest Moon casts a quick cantrip as the voices of the Small Eyes fade into the jungle. With her senses boosted by the blessing of Guidance, she listens for the direction in which the Small Eyes flee. Do they run down river? Returning to the Pirate King - the Cow Man and the Pale Man? Or do they flee in a different direction?
"We cannot travel well in darkness," says Harvest Moon to her fellow League Adventurers. Then she continues, explaining her statement. "But neither can they travel well either. I do not think that they can return to us for another fight until morning. It is best, I think, that we remain here and continue our rest."
"They know of our coming already. One place is as good as another to camp. We will only tire ourselves more by moving camp or pursuing the Small Eyes."
Harvest Moon frowns then at the wounds of Edson Kazil. Others too, bear wounds. Gathering her fellow League Adventurers together, she raises her arms and light bursts from her twice, healing the cuts and burns of her friends. She takes out the Wand of Torian Silverleaf too, and uses the last charge to further heal Edson Kazil.
Then, as the others settle back into their rest, Harvest Moon collects the Feathered Hat of the Small Eyes chief, and begins dragging the body into the brush for the night beasts to consume.

"That kobold gave you all you could handle " teases Peza to Edson ... ;-)

Edson nods his thanks to Harvest, after receiving the healing. He watches as his wounds clear up a bit, but he was still worse for wear.
He smiled to Peza. "When I had by string plucking, they were going down. But once he got close, I had a few missteps." he says as he wipes off his weapon. " Plus it's not the size of dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog... these dogs had some fight in them"
Once he gets situated, Edson searches the bodies for anything. (Perception 22)

During the fight, Hert failed to dodge the ball of fire. Hert fell on the ground, attempting to shake it off, but only managed to give himself even more burns. Luckily, the fight ended soon, and after Harvest's healing, and Gargul's blessing, his wounds heal up completely.
When the fight is over, Hert doesn't cheer up or talk much. Sulking, he cleans up his sword and clothes from the blood splatters. After washing his face and hands, he goes to his equipment and gets a small shovel from it. He digs a deep round hole in the ground near the pile of kobold corpses. Then he arranges the corpses neatly in the hole and buries them. He finishes up by reading a prayer over the new grave.
Once again cleaning up - this time from the dirt on his hands he returns to his sleeping bag. He lies there, staring at the sky and slowly falling asleep

The Smoke Clears... - DM Ian Friday March 1st, 2013 3:10:16 PM
The group reacts differently to the battle.
Harvest knows that the kobolds are not running in one direction -- they are simply running. Some scurry downriver, others upriver, others simply scatter into the forest on their own. After healing her allies, she takes the chief's headdress before dragging the corpse into the bushes.
Gerox searches the area for magic. While the chief's necklace is glowing, the magic is beginning to fade from it. The artifact once had a strong evocation aura, but it is quickly dissipating. DC 20 Spellcraft to Identify: Highlight to display spoiler: {The item was a Level II Necklace of Fireballs.}
Barratore brags to his allies as he cleans the campsite before getting some rest.
Brom meets the minotaur's challenge, counting his own kills, the chief among them.
Peza laughs, helping her friends with the bodies. She also pokes fun at her elven friend, who takes it in stride.
Edson breathes deeply, the divine magic refreshing his battered body. Searching the corpses, he finds nothing more than small bows and spears, basic leather armor and barding, and most of those are covered in blood. These creatures were clearly not very wealthy.
Hert takes on a more somber mood, digging a grave for the fallen. By the time he is finished, the moon has moved considerably closer to the horizon. A small price to pay for a clean conscience.
I am going to assume you all take a full night's rest. No need for watches, you scared the kobolds off well enough. Zach will be taking the reins again on Monday. I've had a blast DMing! I'll be seeing you all again soon. ;)
Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF15; CMD 21; HP34/34) - Al Friday March 1st, 2013 5:29:00 PM
Harvest Moon stands the rest of her watch. The return of the Small Eyes is unlikely. The appearance of the Pirate King, at this time of night, is equally unlikely. There are beasts, however, that might be drawn by the bodies of the slain Small Eyes. Sated with their meat, though, they will be unlikely to attack an able group such as herself and the League Adventurers.
At the end of her watch, she retires to her nest, curling up until some unknown mechanism within herself senses the gray of the false dawn and she awakens. After tending to her toilet, Harvest Moon observes the morning ritual of communion with Domi and the his connection to the Wold itself. When she rises from her meditations, the first light of the true dawn greets her. This may be a difficult day. This may be the day that they must contend with the Pirate King.

With his watch over Edson heads to bed. More healing from Hert and Harvest help clear the wounds up, but only a good nights sleep will ease the pain. Edson lays down, staring to the sky and pondering his place in this team.
After a few minutes, he says a little too loudly so everyone can hear " I might get stabbed a lot but atleast I'm giving you guys a chance to practice your healing"

"Thanks for that. Feelin' much better." He says to Hert's healing.
Brom gruffs at Gerox's comment. Then he walks over to the gnome and gets down on a knee, right down at his level. "When I'm the one standin' 'tween their spears and you, I'll brag as much as I dang want. You wanna be the meat shield then you can me not ta brag...Get it." Brom stands up and walks back to what he was doing prior. He does glance for any looks of others he might be getting. Brom feels he made his point.
"Right there with ya, Edson."

Barratore smirks at Brom's count, not thinking the man has it right, but it was a good natured contest and so not worth mentioning. Barratore ignores Gerox, but can't help chuckling when he hears what Brom says to the gnome. Settling in, he offers a bit of advise in Edson's direction, "Might try not letting them stab you as a change of pace next time."

Gerox's eyes raise at Brom's comment and he almost protests that he wasn't hiding behind anyone but adventured out into the jungle and attacked by himself but suddenly he remembers a piece of advice his Grandfather said to him. "Tall folks are big but because they are so big, they have small minds. Big tempers but small minds. Tread carefully around them." Brom seemed to fit this mold more than most so Gerox wisely decides to hold his tongue.
He reaches out and pats Brom on the shoulder and says, "Thank you for being my meat shield?" he says with a question in his voice.
He turns to the others, and says, "I am not seeing any lasting magic. The necklace was a necklace of fireballs but it's magic seems to be expended." (spell check 22)
Gerox quickly turns in to get some sleep so he can regain his spells. He wakes up refreshed.

Hert wakes up early and immediately leaves to the jungle. He doesn't leave too far, and words of his prayers can be heard from behind the trees. He returns refreshed; apparently he also took a quick shower - at least his hair and beard are completely soaked in water. His gloom from yesterday night is mostly, gone, even though he avoids looking at the grave that he made.
He makes himself a simple and bland breakfast, packs his stuff in a backpack and puts his armor with some assistance. When he's ready, he waits for the leaders of the group to make their decision.
