The Kings Hideout

It's a Beautiful Morning
Monday March 4th, 2013 5:17:05 AM

The entire group awakes refreshed. There are were not attacks last night, no crazy sounds, not even the stupid monkeys that the group saw before. Sure there were the typical sounds of bugs and insects but all in all it was a good night. The day is sunny and bright but with a a nice cool breeze. What could be better. In the near by river fish can be seen easily swimming around.

Will the heroes try to hunt and gather some food, or will they rely on their trail rations for breakfast? It seems there will not be any more trouble out of the kobolds.

OOC: Everyone receives 1,000xp for the battles with the Kobolds. Good job folks!

Edson wakes, still tired from the night before. He yawns and stretches, before wslking to the river to clean up a bit. Noticing the fish swimming, an idea comes to his mind. He races back to his bag, grabs his bow and some arrows. He loads the arrows and take aim at the fish, letting loose until he catches some breakfast for the group. He lets loose with 6 arrows, gathers any fish he catches, and arrows that missed. He brings his bounty back to the group, hoping some fresh fish will boost the morale.

Monday March 4th, 2013 9:24:16 AM

Harvest Moon frowns at the memory of the night before. Boasting seems so ... senseless. And yet it is the case in many animals that the males must declare their prowess. The thought places her fellow League Adventurers into a new and somewhat disturbing light. Are they ... are they ... could it be that they are wishing to mate? In the same manner in which she would approach a physical oddity, with cautious stealth, Harvest Moon now circles this thought. It is, she feels, a dangerous thought. And yet, it is, in a basic and visceral way, strangely compelling. It is a thought that is accompanied by a physical sensation. A new tingling of the body.

"We must go," she says, shaking off the feeling as she puts the thought aside. "We can eat as we go. I can hunt and forage while we go. It will be slower, but it will be at least as fast as we can go with heavy and very noisy armor. Brom too, I think, can forage as well."

"Let us go now," she says. "I do not think that we wish to spend another night in the jungle."

Barratore wakes up and puts his armor on and exists the tight confines of the tree hole. A few stretches to get the blood flowing and the stiffness out of his muscles and Barratore opens his pack and grabs a handful of hard cheese, tact and salty beef strips. He stands looking about at the others. "When you hunt for food and forage berries, you're not seeing ambushes and such. I think the scouts and those at point should focus more, collect flowers less. we blundered into one already, next time it might be against a dangerous opponent."

Barratore takes out his bow, puts an arrow to it and looks towards Harvest, Peza and Edson to take up point.

When the group is ready to move out, Hert offers:
"We shouldn't do hunting, we have enough supplies to get to the Pirate King without having to gather more. Plus, we should stay together, as the previous day showed..."

"I agree, lets focus on finding this pirate, stay together as much as possible and make up some ground before some other random monster attacks us.

I still think we should use our scouting method and string ourselves out a bit. If a kobold was equipped with a necklace of fireballs, then imagine what the folks who equipped him might have. We don't want to get caught up as a group in a group destructive spell."

It's a Beautiful Morning
Tuesday March 5th, 2013 8:17:10 AM

Edson takes time to "catch" some fish before the group sets off. He finds his mark on two of the fish before the sound of the arrows or the blood in the water scare the others off.

The though of foraging for food is mentioned but quickly shot down by the majority of the group. It has been decided that with their track record, the group would rather keep every available eye on the lookout for more trouble.

The group is making decent time, take a nice, leisurely stroll through the jungle. Not too leisurely, but still.

Before long though, Peza and Harvest both notice the absence of the typical jungle sounds.

Harvest only Highlight to display spoiler: {There is a very faint rustling in some underbrush about 80ft ahead. It is too big to be a bird.}

"There is a thing." With a finger to her lips, Harvest Moon calls for both quiet and stealth. "It is too big to be a harmless creature. It is there." She points to a section of the underbrush about 80 feet ahead.

"We should proceed with all care."

She takes the polearm from her back and then turns her eyes to the ground. This thing, this creature, as big as it is, may very likely use this same trail upon which she and the League Adventures now walk. Harvest Moon searches the ground quickly. With a practiced eye she matches the tracks to creatures that she knows of.

Then, Harvest Moon turns her eyes up and to the spot at which she had noticed the rustling. Her slanted elf-born eyes attempt to pierce the underbrush and pick out the identity of what lies within.

Harvest Moon frowns at the deer and at the boar and it's piglets as well. Something still seems ... incorrect. It is unusual that a deer should be so close to a boar with it's young. And why is it that the typical jungle sounds of the jungle disappeared? Surely they did not do so for the presence of a deer and a boar.

Once again she examines the tracks that have proceeded them on the trail ahead. Then ...

"I think that we should still proceed with caution," insists Harvest Moon. She peers even harder into the leafy mass of the jungle and tries to catch the least unusual sound as she moves forward down the trail with the others.

Any knowledge nature checks above 10 will reveal: Much more ill-tempered and dangerous than their domesticated kin, boars are omnivorous creatures common to temperate forests, although they are not unknown in tropical climes. Other variants exist as well, such as the particularly ugly warthogs that dwell in tropical plains and savannahs. Boars are often hunted for their flesh, which is considered delicious by most humanoids. Those who hunt boars often do so with a special spear fitted with a cross beam to prevent an impaled boar from pushing forward along the spear shaft to gore its tormentor.

The boar's stubborn nature and habit of eating even bones makes it well suited as a pet for certain folk. Many thieves' guilds keep boars for the disposal of bodies, while orc tribes let them run loose in their lairs, where they do a relatively good job at keeping these warrens clean of refuse.

A boar is four feet long and weighs 200 pounds.

If the mother sow were to be killed her piglets are so small they would surely perish from either predator or starvation.

Jungle Nights
Friday March 8th, 2013 6:54:13 AM

The Rummers trek through the Jungle is rather uneventful for the remainder of the day. Right around dusk the party notices the canopy opens up ahead, just enough that a rather large wooden building can be seen.

It is hard to tell from here what it is, but as it is the first building that the group has encountered, it is most likely your destination. It is still some 600ft ahead. It is obviously at a portion of the river that opens up rather wide. It is impossible to get a good idea of the size of the structure due to the trees and the distance you are from it. It is also impossible to see any movement from anyone that might be in or near the structure.

How do you proceed?

Edson Kazil(Shawn), AC 17, Touch AC 15, Flatfooted AC 15, HP 9/23
Friday March 8th, 2013 8:11:27 AM

Edson stops, still in the undergrowth to stay unseen. He looks around for any trails or hiding spots that can be used to get to the building without being seen.

" We either find a way to the building across this clearing, or we wait to nightfall. I don't feel like giving this pirate any more ground to stand on verse us."

The approach of Edson Kazil is slow and shows method. The approach of Harvest Moon conceives is even slower still with greater method.

"We should first discover whether or not this is indeed the den of the pirates," suggests Harvest Moon. She squats upon the trail facing in the direction of the clearing and it's building. Her eyes stare into the distance as though seeing the whole in her mind's eye. "Then, if it is indeed so, we should watch them in silence to discover their numbers and their character. We should also scout the surroundings to find the best approach of concealment. They know this area. We do not. I would take this advantage from them before they even know we are here."

"For now, I think it best if Edson Kazil approaches the clearing. It would be best if you can place your magic upon him, Gerox Shale. So that none may see him. He can approach in silence, and discover any pits or snares that the pirates may have prepared along the trail."

"From there, we might find a camp and from this camp scout this clearing. If we learn much today, we might attack the pirates tomorrow when we are fresh and prepared."

Harvest Moon looks up then at her fellow League Adventurers, seeking the signs upon their faces that would tell her what it is that they think of her ideas.

They are most certainly pirates. The two on look out are both human. To this point Edson has not ventured too close, for fear of giving way the element of surprise. Their are two others, a half orc, and a dwarf that can bee seen carrying a heavy box towards the dock. "Wonder if those bounty hunters will make it here afore the boss gets in later tonight?" One can be heard saying.

Does Edson press closer or try to enter the buildings or does her report back with his current information?

"It is possible," says Harvest Moon in a very quiet voice, "that the Pirate King is not at this place. It is, after all, only a Resupply Camp. It may not be the home of the Pirate King. Only a place to be occasinally visited."

"In such a case," she adds, "what will we do then?"

Gerox hears Harvest's question and ponders an answer. He will message a whispered answer saying, "My first instinct is to attack it and kill the pirates here. Pirates are criminals who need removing from our society. But if we do that, then we must make sure we slay or capture every pirate there. We can leave none to bring word of us the the Pirate King.

If we are successful in taking the shanty, then maybe we can lay a trap for the king and ambush him or his forces when they visit here."

Edson doesn't want to venture too far in and get stuck in there with his invisibility spell wearing off, so he turns and heads back to the group. Once in the underbrush again, he tells what he saw. The two guards on the crowsnests, the half orc and dwarf with the box, the bounty hunters coming in, and the boss not being there until later tonight.

"And you saw no pits or snares?" Harvest Moon confirms after Edson Kazil finishes his report. With a small hand she clears a space upon the ground before presenting Edson Kazil with a stick. "Please draw upon the ground of the clearing , of the building, and of the river. How far from the edge of the clearing to the wall? Do they watch the dock? Perhaps we could swim to their blind side. From what entrance did the dwarf and the half-orc leave the building for the dock? Was it left open behind them? Were there any other entrances to the building? This may help us to decide how and where best to attack them from."

"It is possible that there are only the four who presently occupy the Resupply Camp. But I do not think so. Still, there will be many more once the Pirate King arrives with a boat. That would be ... difficult,"
says Harvest Moon.

Most of the group debates on whether to kill or capture the pirates. Regardless of what is done, leaving any about to just do as they please is likely a terrible idea.

Barratore waits for Edson to return, a small snicker escaping his lips at Broms impatience. He was not gifted with an over abundance of patience, but this particular wait did not seem taxing to him. the enemy and the goal were near, were in sight in fact and that kept his mind busy with images of the battle to come. Sliding in sideways past a thrusting weapon, his backhand sending the assailant flying from his feet. Spinning a about, his sword leading the way to cut another down even as he lunges forward and skewers a third. Within the mind of the fighter, every fight was a glorious rush of adrenaline and the more opponents to face the better.

Edsons return and report does little to slack his anticipation of the conflict to come. Answering Harvest's initial query, "Then we leave no port for him to resupply at." To Hert the fighter gives a confused look, "These are murdering pirates and do not deserve mercy or quarter. They choose their path."

Looking back across the distance to close, Barratore snorts, "That is a lot of pretty open ground to cover with 2 men in lookout towers. Harvest is right on one thing, we need to do this before the ship arrives with more."

"They are thugs and lowlifes, but does each of them deserve to be put to death? Are they all murderers? Did they all join the pirates because of their greed, or was it maybe to feed their families? That I will never know.

Now you all have a right to pass your own judgement on them. Your actions will be judged later. But I am an Eye of Gargul, and my duty is to preserve the balance of life and death. This means I cannot take a life of a person that did not deserve it, or I myself will become an enemy of balance.

This is why I will not attack them unless they attack us. This is why I will do my best to take as few lives as possible."

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF15; CMD 21; HP34/34) - Al
Tuesday March 12th, 2013 5:12:50 PM

Despite the importance of the map of Edson Kazil, despite the threat of the pending battle with the men, dwarves, and half-orcs of the Pirate King, despite all of this, the speaking of Hert of Gargul tugs at the interest of Harvest Moon. His words are, on one hand, very appealing. They speak of peace and safety and justice. But, on the other hand, something seems wrong, like a pointed stone that balances upon its tip with nothing about with which to support it.

"Many creatures die, Hert of Gargul," replies Harvest Moon, looking up from the map of Edson Kazil. "One is eaten by another. One is crushed under a slide of rock. Another is caught in a blaze of fire. There is no deserving in any of these things. It is simply the way of things. Some creatures die so that other creatures might live. All creatures battle for life. They are born. They fight to live. Then they die. It is ... " Harvest Moon considers for a moment how such a thing might be described. "It is a great wheel that is ever turning."

"We cannot know of the lives of these men. But we do know that they follow the Pirate King. We know that the Pirate King burns the ships of Rum. We know that the Pirate King slays the sailors of Rum. We know too, that we are bound to protect the ships and sailors of Rum. So it must be that we are pitted against each other by our natures."

"I think, that should they cease to follow the Pirate King, I many be moved to show mercy upon them. But I do not forget the actions of the Small Eyes. They were shown mercy, and yet they returned to attack us once again. That is something that I will not forget."

Gerox listens to the debate between Hert and Harvest and becomes angrier as the talk, "Hert, We work for Woldian League of Adventurers and have sworn an oath to uphold good and act rightly. We defend the weak from the strong. Our leaders have sent us here to take away this threat to Rum and the good people who live there. You need to decide where your loyalties lie. If you wish to preserve life then leave us and build a church at Rum. Cater to your flock and I will respect you for it. Here we are on the front line where sword and spell have to be used quickly and decisively. We will not have time to debate if a life should be spared or not. Our own lives will be at stake and if you cause the life of one of us with your qualms, then I will burn you down."

Gerox is visibly upset as tries to calm himself. He points to the outpost and continues, "Edson snuck in and has determined that these folks are in league with the Pirate King. That condemns them in my eyes. They aren't chained to the wall so they can't get away. They are here because they want to be here. If you have your doubts, then go home. Otherwise do your best to send these men to be judged by the Gods."

Gerox turns his mind away from Hert and on to the problem at hand. "We need to take out the guards quickly and quietly. I have one more invisiblity spell left. Can someone use it to sneak up close? Or we can mass our fire on them and hope to take them out. I know my magic missiles won't miss. I just can assure that it will kill."

Surprised by the fiery nomes response to Hert's beliefs ... "no need to be so angry because you disagree ... i know we must attack and show no quarter during battle ... but if they surrender then they should be brought to Rum for a show of justice .... "

"Now the guards said the pirate king won't be back till later tonight ... so we have a little more time to scout and get a better lay of the camp and the size of the defenders.... then we can attack before he arrives ... maybe attack from two points and meet at a certain point in the camp"

"I like the idea of mass firing on the tower guards ....its quick and if it works will get us into the camp before any alarms sound "

Hert prepares to answer to Harvest Moon, but before he manages to say a word, Gerox steps in. Hert silently listens to the sorcerer, averting his eyes. When Gerox finishes, Hert says quietly:

"I apologize, Gerox. I shouldn't have brought it up. Your safety is top priority here and it was wrong of me to imply I could compromise it. Stopping Pirate King will save lives of many honest people, and if I have to kill to get to him, I will. Now lets do it."

When the topic is changed to taking out the guards he says:
"If we are quick enough they won't raise any alarms. I could ask Gargul to silence a small area around them. They won't be able to utter a sound for about half-a-minute. More than enough to take them out. Just signal me whenever you are ready."

The Best Laid Plans -- DM Zach
Wednesday March 13th, 2013 8:41:01 AM

The group takes a moment to debate the philosophical differences between them in regards to the morality of killing the pirates.

On the one hand, they have done nothing that the group can tell to warrant death aside from make a living the best way they know how. On the other hand, that living has rained death and destruction down upon those who were also just trying to make a living; albeit a more honest one.

While this issue is still yet resolved, our Intrepid Heroes converse on the plan of attack. Should another scout be sent in? Should they split the group? Do the try to slip in undetected and cause mayhem from within, or assault they watchtowers and hope to eliminate them before the alarm can be raised?

All valid questions that must be answered in the next few hours.

Things can get even more dicey when the Pirate King returns with his ship and more men.

OOC: Still waiting on a link with the map from Ian. If he doesn't send it soon, I'll make one and he will just have to do the combat on it. =)

The strong words of Gerox Shale draw raised eyebrows from Harvest Moon. It is surprising that the gnome should be so very angry. He is normally very pleasant. But, perhaps, he is one of those who lives very strongly and all emotions in him are very big.

Also very impressive is the power of which Hert of Gargul speaks. "To make silence," she says. "That is a very powerful thing. I think that many things will depend upon the distances," she then says, returning to the rough map upon the ground. "If the two humans within the crowsnest towers are near enough together, perhaps you can make them both silent at the same time. Yes?"

"Once they are silent, some of us can attack them from afar. Peza. Barratore Steelwind. Gerox Shale. Edson Kazil."
Harvest Moon nods. "I and Brom and Hert of Gargul will, at the same time, rush for the door. I think that we must go now. Before the dwarf and the half-orc finish their task and return. I think that the door must now be open for them. When they finish, they may return and lock it behind them."

"We will hold the door so that they might not shut it. If there are many of them within, we will also try to keep them from coming out until we are ready."

Harvest Moon studies the relationships in the map of Edson Kazil. "I do not think that we need even attack the Crowsnest Watchers." Harvest Moon points to first one and then the other of the lookouts in the crowsnest towers and draws lines of sight from them to the building. "If we rush up the river to this door in the north of the building, neither of the Crowsnest Watchers will be able to shoot at us. The building will block their sight. After that, they may remain up there and shout as loudly as they wish. But I think they will not. I think that they will come down. From there, some of us hold the door while the others slay the dwarf and the half-orc with bolts and arrows."

"I think that we are safe until we arrive very much closer than we are now. But we must all creep quietly until we are quite near. I will go further ahead with Peza and Edson Kazil. If you cannot creep well, remain behind until we are one hundred and sixty paces from the first crowsnest tower."

Harvest Moon prepares for the stealthy approach. With keen eyes she will search for pits and snares.

"And please do not burn the building," adds Harvest Moon as an afterthought. "I think that if you do so, the smoke will be seen from very far away."

After thinking on Gerox's suggestion, he replies:
"True, that could work. The silence won't last longer than half-a-minute, though, so whoever gets the spell should hurry."

After Harvest explains her strategy he objects:
"I think we should take out watchers first. I fear that they may have signal horns. If they get to sound them, we might end up fighting every pirate on this island. The dwarf and the orc shouldn't be as dangerous. We could take them out very quickly."

"Come to think of it, I have another "spell" that might be of use. It, well... It kind of allows you to fly. Flying requires a bit of practice, but it would let one of us to take out the watchers in a moment. Saves us the effort of getting to those crow nests and everything. So basically I think that one of us, Brom for example, should fly up and clear out those crow nests, Edson could assist him with his bow, and the rest of us get the orc and the dwarf. He was going to engage the crows nest from rang and he was going to close as fast as possible. Can't do both he did know that the group needed to close by a lot before they did anything else. So he keeps his confusion to himself. Harvest could make the door fast and likely undetected. He knew she could hold it for a time as well. Also, these crows nests have roofs over them and short walls, like a guard tower. They are made of wood.

ooc (ok now that I have taken a good look at the map! I really think we need to rethink our plan. I think we can take out both watch towers with the plan but the orc and the dwarf are going to notice something and sound an alarm.)

Gerox holds up his hand to halt the group once he gets closer and sees the layout of the supply area. "This plan won't work. The two on the docks are going to notice us and raise the alarm. I think we need to try and take out all three groups at once. This is what I propose. We all approach from the East. Brom, Hert and I will move down towards the docks. I make Brom invisible and Hert gives him an silence stone and he attacks the dwarf and orc on the docks. I will use a magic missile spell to take out the human in the eastern tower. Hopefully it is enough to kill him but at least we know it won't miss. Hert can help with that if he has a missile weapon and then we go help Brom.

The rest of you take out the other tower with concentrated missile attacks. If it works, everyone meet at the eastern door and we go into the large building as a group. If it doesn't, we take out the exterior guards as fast as possible and then get to the eastern door to move in. We can save the fly spell for later. If everything goes to pot, and they get missile troops on the roof, it might be a fast way to get there. Sound good?"

DM note, to keep things moving, do you want to place us somewhere on the Eastern side of the map?

Harvest Moon begins walking towards the Depot with Peza behind her, but there is some confusion amongst the rest of the group.

Hert, Edson, Gerox and Brom all voice uncertainty as to what duties are expected of them in the coming battle.

Even Barratore seems to not follow the plan in its entirety, though that doesn't stop him from pressing on.

The group must either quickly press the attack or stop and rethink their strategy lest the group be split.

Inwardly Harvest Moon sighs as a glimpse behind reveals the confusion of ideas and the hesitation that it has sewn. It is exactly as she had feared would happen and why she had left so abruptly in hopes to avoid just such a thing. But, perhaps it is for the best. There is one thing lacking. And, perhaps, it would not be good to go on without it.

"We must know more," says Harvest Moon after she returns to the others. "You see now that we cannot silence both Watchmen and the Dwarf and Half-orc before one of the four sounds an alarm. Yes?"

"If that is true, we must change the situation. One way is to wait until the Dwarf and Half-orc return inside. But, we cannot guarantee that others might not come outside in the meantime. So, another way is to ensure that those who are inside do not come out. They can scream warnings all that they wish. It will be to no avail."

"Gerox Shale, you say that you have one more spell of Invisibility. Hert, you have a spell of Silence. I say that you give both to Edson Kazil. Wish such spells, he will be silent and invisible. As such, he can disable all doors so that those inside cannot come out while we slay both Watchmen and the Dwarf and Half-orc. After that, we may bring those within to the outside at a time of our choosing."

"I do not think it a good idea to place a spell of Flying upon Brom."
She eyes his armor and the weight that it puts upon him. He would be ungainly in the air. "If anything, place the spell of flying upon Edson Kazil as well. It will make him that much faster."

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF15; CMD 21; HP34/34) - Al
Tuesday March 19th, 2013 12:13:29 PM

Only now, faced with the reality of it, can Harvest Moon appreciate how poorly she had envisioned things. Most surely, she had expected some form of chaos once the competing ideas had begun. She had anticipated the attempts to draw back from the confusing flurry of conflicting plans would only result in even greater confusion. But, she had not anticipated how swiftly, how brutally, and how decisively the plan-making would break and the League Adventurers would be cast from the relative safety of their frail bark of order into the surging waters of impromptu action.

With the speed of thought, the small half-elfish girl takes in the situation. For the moment, the men of the Pirate King are off balance, surprised by the quick and violent strike of Peza's bolt. But that would not last long. To retain the initiative, the League Adventurers must know more. They must know more now, and there is only one way to do this.

At a blind, full-out sprint Harvest Moon charges across the distance between herself and the building of the Pirate King. She runs. The wind blows back the single lock of hair that normally hangs down over her forehead. The land blurs beneath to the rapid patter of her own running feet. Harvest Moon heads, as she had previously planned, for the north side of the building and the door that Edson Kazil had drawn there. There, she would be sheltered from the arrows of the Crowsnest Watchmen. There, with luck, she would also be able to look inside the building.

She passes the northwest corner of the building and skids to a stop to the left of the door. With the polearm raised high, Harvest Moon takes a moment to catch her breath. To the Half-orc, hidden behind the boxes nearby, she gives a short growl. Then Harvest Moon ducks her head around the corner of the doorjamb for a look inside, fully prepared to shout out what she might see to warn her fellow League Adventurers.

The pirates had fallen back, the building appears to have emptied and so the fight would be outside. That suited Barratore more than a little, even though it surely meant arcane area spells would be forthcoming from this Grul character the dwarf yelled for.

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF17; CMD 21; HP34/34) - Al  d20+2=21 ; d10=5 ;

For a moment, she is back in the Contested Kingdoms. Bullies, rival scavengers, the men of warlords coming to claim tribute through goods or through flesh, it matters not who they are. The only things that matter are that they wish to harm she and hers, and that they now outnumber her. In the past she would have run - or tried to - as both her mother and her life experience had taught her to do. But this is not the Contested Kingdoms. And Harvest Moon is no longer that ragged little half-elf. Thelonious had found her and seen to that. She has his training now. She has the blessings of Domi. She has the power of the Wold now upon her side.

Harvest Moon bares her teeth in the direction of the many humans who have spilled onto the dock on the far side of the building. They must be convinced not to join the fight so soon. Once again, Harvest Moon calls upon the grasses to rise up and frenzy. As she points a finger, all of the greenery to the south of the dock and around the corner of the building erupts into frenetic movement. Even the south door is now blocked. In order to come to the aid of the Half-orc Grul, his men must now either circle around, or come by the narrow place between the building and the waters of the river, a place that is easily defended by one or two.

The her verdure defenses now in place, Harvest Moon now rushes to the side of Brom the Rager as he confronts the Half-orc Grul. Her polearm swings in a wide arc to menace any who might dare approach.

ROUND ONE

I'm aware this isn't round one, but I'm just going to begin counting up from here. This is how far I've calculated everyone is from the building.

Harvest - 320 (on the green)
Peza - 240 (60ft away)
Barratore - 270 (30ft away)
Brom - 240 (60ft away)
Hert - 270 (30ft away)
Edson - 270 (30ft away)
Gerox - 60 (240ft away)

The group moves closer to the pirates' outpost, peppering them with fire. The pirates regroup on the other side of the building, shouting obscenities interlaced with instructions at each other. They all seem to stop when the enormous, grey-skinned half-orc with a sword almost as big as him strapped to his back screams, "Get it together, you yellow-bellied scallywags! I'll not be bested by some foolish heroes!" With that, he runs forward, drawing a well-crafted bow and firing it at the enormous minotaur running towards them. The arrow grazes the taur, dealing 3 damage!

The brigands finally get themselves together. The half-orc helps drag his injured dwarven ally into the building while the two humans move north. One draws a thin rapier while the other opts for a bow, taking careful aim at Harvest and dealing 8 damage with his arrow!

The monk's Entangle spell explodes in the foliage, but the two men trapped inside it are far too deft to be trapped by the awful roots. One moves south to leave the entanglement, while the other follows the enormous half-orc with the greatsword. He pulls out two blades, hefting the shorter one to hold it so that the blade is flat against his wrist. The remaining human in the watchtower fires an arrow at the approaching cleric Hert, but he loses it in the trees/ (I'm not sure if Hert is wearing his armour - if he is, it missing, but if he isn't, it hits for 2 damage.)

The arrow buries itself deep within her flesh. To draw it out now would only cause blood to flow in dangerous quantities. Remaining, however, behind the corner of the building brings cover against the human in the tower, and the half-orc Grul, who now has a bow as well.

Harvest Moon readies for the two pirates who approach across the dock. She touches the fist-shaped root and calls upon a blessing. A translucent shield springs up before her. Embossed in its center - a delicate tracery in the air - is emblazoned the symbol of Domi. Harvest Moon stamps her foot and brandishes the polearm. At the first pirate to approach, she will strike.

Brom - 360 (on the green)
Hert - 270 (30ft away)
Edson - 270 (30ft away)
Gerox - 360 (on the green)

Edson strikes out with an arrow, finding his target with the human in the tower.

Harvest powers through her wound, preparing herself for anyone approaching her.

Barratore returns the half-orc's fire, plugging the orc who screams in anger.

Brom stomps through the woods, closing the gap between him and his opponents.

Gerox was closer than he thought and manages to loose a magic missile at the human in the watchtower. (My mistake on your movement, I accidentally mixed up your distance.)

Peza's shot misses its mark as her crossbow bolt flies wide.

The pirates show little intention of showing mercy. The first takes Harvest's polearm in the guy, spinning to the side to slash with his wide blade. The attack misses, giving his ally an opportunity to slash at the monk, but both attacks fly wide.

The half-orc drops his bow, favouring the enormous sword on his back as he charges Barratore, but the momentum carries his blade too far and he misses. His ally has a bit more luck as the taur is flanked, cutting him for 6 damage!

The half-orc that disappeared into the building remerges from the northern door. His ally in the watchtower takes aim at Gerox, dealing 2 damage to the sorcerer!

OoC to DM Ian: Can we discuss the definition of "Flanked"? Here's the definition of Flanking: "When in doubt about whether two characters flank an opponent in the middle, trace an imaginary line between the two attackers' centers. If the line passes through opposite borders of the opponent's space (including corners of those borders), then the opponent is flanked."

Looking at the map and applying the rule to Barratore, H5 and G don't seem to come anywhere near describing a line from their centers that pass through opposite borders of Barratore's space.

The half-orc emerges from the building. Yet another opponent. Behind her is Gerox Shale. She must hold the three here. It is up to her to protect Gerox Shale.

Harvest Moon aims a double snap kick high at the jaw of the one who took her polearm swing. It is he, wounded as he is, that would be most vulnerable. She aims her first kick very deliberately at a place where Thelonious had said that there was a grouping of nerves. Striking it, he had said, would cause stunning pain. Harvest Moon feels the first kick strike solidly, but lightly. The second kick she hears more than feels and she is unsure whether it hits flesh or armor. She turns the withdraw of her foot into a brief scuttling retreat of but a few steps. As her feet draw her back, her hands swing the polearm in a whistling arc, a warning to how dangerous it can be.

Harvest Moon catches the pirate in front of her off guard and stuns him with an uppercut, causing him to wobble on his feet and drop his weapon. He is out where he stands.

Peza lets fly a miraculous shot that somehow misses Barrotore and strikes the human he is fighting in the throat, sending him rather unceremoniously, into the afterlife.

Edson lets fly an arrow that goes whizzes past the head of his target just above its shoulder.

Gerox sends forth bolts of force that nearly beat the guard in the tower unconscious. Somehow he manages to stay on his feet, bow still in hand.

Hert swings at his target but strikes only dirt in a wild melee maneuver that could only be described as... well most people wouldn't actually classify it as an attack.

Brom thrusts his spear at the pirate attacking him. Pirate opens its mouth, to yell a command, he is forever silenced by Brom's spear as it enters his mouth and exits the back of his head.

Barratore is able to do some damage to his two target with his horns, but when he attacks Grul with his massive weapon, he strikes the building as he swings and does damage to nothing but the ears of all in the vicinity as metal screeches against stone.
-------------------

Grul counterattacks with two rapid strikes, the first is parried by the minotaur, but the second bites into Barratore's flesh doing 14 points of slashing damage as it gashes the large warriors bicep.

The Pirate (HM1) in the tower lets loose an arrow that hits Barratore in his massive thigh dealing 6 points of damage.

The Half Orc charges Harvest Moon but is wildly ineffective.

The Stunned pirate does little more than stand and wobble, fighting to stay on his feet.

The pirate next to him moves up and attempts to attack Harvest Moon as well but trips over his own feet.

She will hold them here. She must hold them here. Harvest Moon growls low and in her throat. Her teeth are bared as her eyes shift from one opponent to the other. Swift and sudden, she lashes out, kicking high with one foot to the face of the wounded half-orc. In that flash of movement, she wills her hands and feet to become hard as wood. Using the lift and the circular momentum from the rise and fall of her kick, Harvest Moon turns her body in a tiny leap. And when the foot lands, finding firm ground once again, Harvest Moon drives the other foot straight out into the knee of the Half-orc.

The cost of this is in the polearm. To even her balance the blade must necessarily fall back. She had planned to strike at the stunned pirate as he reached down to pick up his weapon. However, there is much doubt now as to whether she will be able to bring the blade about in time for an accurate strike.

"You will burn no more ships," growls Harvest Moon to the pirates before her. "You will be brought to law."

The group kills all but two of the Pirates. Seeing their comrades shredded an knowing they are next, both pirates drop weapon and flee. It is very possible to kill both in a matter of seconds... but to do so you would have to shoot, or slash, them in the back.

No need to roll to hit or damage if you wish to kill them, just RP how you go about doing it.

One, he doesn't want them to relay a message to the pirate captain, and two if those two men were to hurt anyone in the future that would be blood on his hands. They had to die, simple as that.

Here is the chance. Harvest Moon leaps after the pirate as he turns to flee. The polearm sweeps at his feet to trip him to the ground. Pouncing upon the fallen man, she strikes down upon him, not to kill, but only to drive him to unconsciousness.

Only a few hours remain between now and the arrival of the ship of the Pirate King. But that may be enough time to draw from this man some information about the ship. How many men crew this ship? Will the Pale Man be aboard as well? Who is this Pale Man? And why is he called such?

There are many questions, and these questions could save lives.

It is a grim business to be the teeth and claws that enforce the rule of law. But she has seen the result of lawlessness and disorder. In such states, happiness belongs only to the strong.

"I have captured one," Harvest Moon announces to all. "This one is only lacking consciousness. I think that we must, through pressure or persuasion, gain knowledge from this one about the Pirate King and his ship. We should, at least, know how many men are aboard. I, too, am concerned about the Pale Man and would know more about him."

"I will deliver a blessing to whoever might try this. Perhaps if we all gather 'round, we can aid in this thing."

"I will wake him when you are ready." Harvest Moon casts the blessing of Guidance, but feels less confident about persuading the pirate. Driving off foes or fleeing from them has always been the way of her life. Convincing them of her cause - this is a new thing.

OoC: Just to move things along here ...

Harsh measures, to be sure. Harvest Moon observes Gerox Shale as he prepares to put the pirate to question. There is something in the gnome that brings doubt as to whether he will truly put fire and steel to this man. But, one never really knows with certainty about such things.

With small grunts and growls, Harvest Moon drags the pirate to the indicated tree where she draws a coil of fine silk rope from her magic bag. (Has it been only a year? Four seasons past she could not have dreamed of owning a fine silk rope, let alone a bag of such powerful magic.) To the tree she binds the pirate, securing him at both ankles and wrists in such a position that he hugs the bole of the tree.

Harvest Moon then calls two blessings. One is of Guidance for Gerox Shale. The other is a blessing of healing. The healing, however, falters. Harvest Moon sighs. Perhaps she will need help from Hert of Gargul.

Gerox smiles evilly as he sees the pirate come back from La la land. He squats by the fire and adjusts the knife, pulling it out and examining the glowing blade. He frowns and puts the blade back into the coals for further heating. He starts talking but doesn't appear to direct his conversation towards anyone in particular. "Personally I don't understand why people fear fire. Fire is our friend" He pauses for a second and continues, "Well at least it is my friend." He places his hand into the fire's flames for a few seconds trusting his damage reduction from fire. "The flames speak to me. The speak truth to me. They don't seem to ever lie but burn away those lies with their cleansing heat."

He turns his attention to the pirate and says, "Ah I see your awake. That is good as we have much to discuss and maybe a short time to do it. You have come to a crossroads in your life. You have hard choices ahead of you and very little time to consider those choices. You are the only survivor of the pirate band we found here. We have killed all the others here. None have escaped. Our charter is to kill this "Pirate King". We have kept you alive for this one purpose. You will tell us of his ship, his crew, his allies and his plans. You will tell us of his weaknesses and things we can exploit against him.

If you choose to help us, you choose life. We will bring you back to Rum and speak well for you. We will push that you are banished and put on a ship heading back to civilization. You will have your life. Now if you choose to withhold information or lie to us, we will know. Our cleric will know if you are lying. His God grants him that power. Then I will introduce you to my friend."

Gerox turns away and shoots a beam of fire into the bonfire he built causing it explode in flames (Hit ac 22 for 6 points of damage) "My friend can also find the truth. He methods are painful and you might not like the experience but I am sure he would. He is always looking for food to grow."

He walks back over to the fire and plucks the glowing knife from it and saunters back. "So what is your decision? Do you wish to talk to us or do you want to meet my friend? Decide quickly! It is interesting how the study of the body for the purposes of grappling and tripping down a foe also informs the binding of a body to hold it immobile or otherwise restrain it. Harvest Moon stands guard nearby lest the pirate attempt to slip his bonds and attack Gerox Shale. This remembers her to the knots taught to the League Adventures by the halfling Navigator Artus Morindim, knots that they used to lash themselves to the SeaSprite lest they be washed away in the storm.

The sounds and voices of the other League Adventures drift to the tree from the building of the pirates. Harvest Moon's mind drifts to the thought of what they might find within. A captain's log, including of the ships that the pirates have attacked thus far? An accounting of their loot documented with dates? Perhaps the loot itself, including personal items that might be identified as having come from persons perished in the attack of these pirates.

It would be interesting to read through these things. And they would be useful in bringing the Pirate King to justice.

The motion of Hert of Gargul, his hand touching the Eye remembers Harvest Moon of her duty here and now. Silently, from her place, she scrutinizes the pirate, observing his face and his body, searching for the telltales signs of prevarication.

Gerox's theatrics seem to have intimidated the subject quite well. "Ok, ok, I'll tell you what I know! Just keep that damned blade away from me!"

Harvest focuses intently on what the pirate says. He seems to be telling the truth, though you are certain he would be running for the jungle if he weren't tied up.

Edson doesn't find any traps, but he also can't get the door to budge on the first door. Going to all of the doors, only one of them unlocks. The one door that is unlocked seems to belong to Grul. On his desk is logbook. It is of nice quality, leather bound, and painstakingly stitched. It is neither moldy or mildewed, or even damaged for that matter, as one would expect from a book in the jungle. There is also a chest that is unlocked. Inside it contains 3 silver longswords and 3 silver battleaxes.

The pirate glances at Hert momentarily but is obviously more worried about the hot knife.

Barratore notices all of the crates have different company names, destinations, and such stamped on them. Most of them have a destination of Rum listed. These seem to be supplies that were destined for Rum but never arrived. Barratore begins to start hauling the bodies to the jungle but decides it might be a good idea to search them first.

Peza keeps her eyes peeled on the docks but aside form what Barratore has already found, she sees nothing.

The eyebrows of Harvest Moon rise at Peza's question. A password. Of course. Her friend is very clever indeed. A smile touches the lips of Harvest Moon before her mind returns to the task at hand. There are many questions. It would be very interesting to know the history of this Pirate King. How does one such as this come to be a pirate? How is it that the Pirate King came to know the Pale Man? There are many stories here.

But these are not questions for this time.

"I have a question, Gerox Shale," interjects Harvest Moon. "Why is it that you burn the boats?" she asks, addressing the pirate directly. "In my reading of pirates I learned that the more kindly pirates are ... more successful. Ships that such kindly pirates pursue will surrender more easily and give over their goods when they know that they will live afterwards and then sail to their homes. A pirate who is known for killing all and then burning good ships, I think, would expect a very fierce fight and many wounded."

"So too, there is ransom of both the ship and crew that this Pirate King does not take. It seems to me that there are more reasons than gold for which the Pirate King sails the seas. What are these reasons? And ... " Harvest Moon cocks her head to one side, and looks up into the face of the pirate, scrutinizing him with a hard look as the question comes to her. " ... And, why would you follow such a person as this?"

Peza makes some decent suggestions.

At the questions coming from both Gerox and Harvest the pirate begins laughing, almost maniacally so. After a moment he gathers himself and in between chuckles begins answering a few questions. "Wait, you mean you really don't know? HAHA!!! And I thought you guy might have actually had a chance. Ohh!!! You have no clue. My advice. Run, before he gets here. When he arrives... you are all doomed. HAHA, Doomed! Well, seeing as I am dead either way..."

With ease, the pirate jumps up, his hands easily slipping from their bonds. (I rolled the escape artist check of 30 and his stealth roll the same post I asked for your rolls. He slipped the ropes and used stealth to keep anyone from noticing). The pirate takes off running and unless something happens, will dive into the river.

Harvest is able to get a solid hold on the Pirate and he is able to do little more than land a weak punch against his aggressor.

Hert joins in and between he and Harvest, is able to get the pirate somewhat under control.

Gerox and Edson both hold, ready to kill the pirate should he break free of Harvest and Hert.

Barratore and Peza talk about what is going on with only one key and multiple rooms.

The pirate after a moment stops struggling, knowing he blew his one chance at freedom.

OOC: Yes, your intimidate work, but just because someone is scared doesn't mean they do what you say. Perhaps there is something he is more afraid of than you, torture, or perhaps even death. Not saying this is the case, but it would explain why he did what he did.

Could also be that perhaps he figured you guys were serious but when he found out how little you knew about the pirate king, he figured he would rather take his chances with you than facing the his wrath.

OoC: I'm pretty sure that the Intimidate skill is less complicated that DMZach. Here's what it says about influencing attitude.

Influence Attitude

You can use Intimidate to force an opponent to act friendly toward you for 1d6 × 10 minutes with a successful check. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier.

Success: If successful, the opponent will:

a. give you information you desire
b. take actions that do not endanger it
c. offer other limited assistance

After the intimidate expires, the target treats you as unfriendly and may report you to local authorities.

Now, you might add a bonus to the DC based on the factors that you described. But, I would think that as DM, you would have to decide that ahead of time to be valid. Adding a bonus after the roll strikes me as deliberately working against things. And ... the question that I would ask is purely mechanical, did Gerox's roll beat the DC?

Harvest Moon drags the recalcitrant pirate to the tree once again. She rebinds him. This time, however, the half-elfish girl strips the armor from the human before tying his hands behind him. She secures his ankles together, and then sits her weight upon the small of his back, his face down in the dirt and grass.

"Ask your questions again, Gerox Shale," she says. But what comes after the questioning? This human has already proven to be ... difficult. It would be so very convenient to simply slay him after. But ...

"Did you speak of keys, Peza?" calls out Harvest Moon to her friend. And rooms. Peza spoke of rooms. "I think that Peza is right. Breaking the doors is something that we must do."

"Edson Kazil, may I examine the ledger, please?" It is a good sign to find such a thing. There is an excitement within Harvest Moon at the thought of looking upon it.

OOC: Yes, all of that is true, and yes, Gerox Intimidate did be the DC which was 10 + HD + Wisdom Modifier. However, two things I would like to point out.

1.You mentioned that the pirate would answer questions, take actions that don't endanger him, or provide limited assistance. Answering those questions would be considered treason by the Pirate King. The Pirate King would viciously kill, or worse, anyone who gave up information about him. Therefore, the pirate feels that answering the questions will either get him killed or lead him to a fate he feels is worth than death.

2. Because of this, I feel that the Pirate King has essentially "intimidated", for lack of a better word, the pirate that works for him. A rolled intimidate from the pirate king is 26 which is higher than Gerox's roll. The only way the pirate would give you the information he knew he would be let go and had a way of getting off the island before the pirate king arrived, which he doesn't.

And a 3rd point, which is irrelevant I guess, is the fact that I feel that intimidate, diplomacy, and bluff are more or less broken. As the rules are set up, a low level halfling bard can scare the pants off of a much higher level character, say a Half-Orc Barbarian just because the bards skill is super high and the Barbarian has a low wisdom. But again, I digress.

Anyway, I'll make a compromise with you guys on this since, "Technically" you guys are right. Doesn't make sense to me, but hey, what do I know.

The prison slumps down and stops resisting and is tied up once again. "Fine, I'll tell you what you want to know. I'm obviously dead either way. I just ask that after I tell you, you kill me and make it painless. It is better than what he will do to me. The Pirate King is not this.. cowman or whatever you said. That would be the First Mate, Kress. He's a minotaur if you haven't figured that one out. The Pale One is an apt name for the Pirate King himself. Let's just say, he ain't exactly natural. They are coming in, sometime tonight of course, it could be early tomorrow. There ain't no signal or nothing either, he ain't afraid of anything. Your best bet is to leave... now before he gets here. If you won't listen and leave now, then please kill me. Either take me with you or kill me... that is all I ask."

"Thank you, Edson Kazil." Harvest Moon receives the book. "I must study this," she says, rising from the back of the prone pirate. "We will protect you," she promises the marauder. "Or, if we are so pressed that we know we cannot ... " The look upon the face of the small half-elfish girl speaks to the grim nature of the vow she will speak. " ... if we cannot, then I promise you a death as swift and painless as is within my power."

"But now, you must tell me more. I must know more of this Pale Man who is the Pirate King. What is his name? Describe to me his appearance. Is he beautiful to look upon? Tell me of his strength and the nature of his prowess. The temperature of his skin. Any small thing that you can remember may be of use. If we know more of him, we may win. And if we win, you may not only live, but you may prosper."

Harvest Moon calls upon a small blessing of Guidance, and then settles nearby to listen.

After hearing the accounts of the pirate, and rendering her thoughts on what the Pirate King might be, Harvest Moon settles nearby and begins reading the ledger given to her by Edson Kazil, the ledger found, or so she's been told, found within the room of the Half-Orc named Grul.

Peza is able to tell that the way the current in the river flows, as well as by how deep the river appears to be, that most likely the ship will pull in and anchor near the center of the river, then use rowboats to bring in any type of cargo.

Edson begins working with the locks and seems to be doing a great job, but he can not get past the mechanism. He can tell that the locks are certainly of Superior quality. The door is extremely solid, and not likely to be able to be opened easily as it is metal. The walls are stone. This is a very well built depot. Almost like a prison, or stronghold. Whoever built it certainly did not want anyone getting in or out. Without a key, it is highly unlikely that entry will be made.

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF17; CMD 21; HP27/34) - Al
Friday April 12th, 2013 10:42:54 AM

A vampire ... It is little wonder that the pirate wishes death. Far preferable to the everlasting undeath in thrall to this Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock.

These thoughts Harvest Moon thinks as she pages through the ledger. If this book was found within the room of the Half-Orc Grul, then it is likely that Half-Orc Grul was the warehousing master of this place, charged with books and inventory for Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock. Though, the condition of the book speaks to it not having been her for long. Perhaps the book did not belong to Grul, but was only temporarily in his care.

Harvest Moon sighs and closes the book. Delay will not make the task less unpalatable. "Very well," she says, standing above the prone pirate. "You will have your wish. Do you have any last words that you wish us to speak to a loved one?" she asks before kneeling with one knee upon the back of the human. "Do not move," warns Harvest Moon. Then she delivers a blow to the back of the man's head that sends him back into an unconsciousness within which there will be neither fear nor pain. "I promised a quick death," says Harvest Moon to Barratore Steelwind. "But I do not think that I have the strength to strike him dead with a single blow. It is my responsibility. But, I would ask you to do this in my stead."

"The Pirate King is a Vampire," announces Harvest Moon after the last wishes of the pirate are executed. She explains what this means in as far as their upcoming battle might mean. "Daylight. Running water. Silver combined with magic. All of these will harm the Vampire."

She casts her eyes out toward the river. Running water to be sure. But with the vampire's power to become a bat or a wisp of gas, would they be able to hold it under the waters? Harvest Moon shakes her head in answer to her own question.

"I think that we must keep the ship here until daylight. We must prevent the boat from leaving, else it will simply leave and then return again at night when the Vampire Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock can walk about. In this way, we might separate the Pirate King from his crew. From there, we might fight them separately instead of facing them as one."

"Gerox Shale, do you think that you can burn the sails? Without sails, I think that the ship will not be able to leave."

"It is a shame," adds Harvest Moon with a shake of her head. "It is fortunate that we have found silver weapons. But the weapons must be combined with magic, and I have neglected to request a blessing of Magic Weapons this morning."

And the fact that he stores silver weapons in his own depot... This just doesn't feel right. There may be more to this.

We could also use Gerox's magic to burn their ship completely. Some of them will make it to the shore, but they won't have a chance to regroup and will be easy targets."

Peza spends some time checking out the cargo already on the docks ... looking for barrels of lamp oil or other types of oil , if she finds any large stocks ... she'll formulate a plan ... There is no way it will burn down a ship or even all of it's sails. Still we might be able to make a trap. If we can find a way to spill some oil on the ship, I can set it ablaze easily enough. This is a storage depot and oil is a common thing found on ships for their lanterns and such. If we can find a cask or two and rig a way to break them on the ship, then it might be possible.

Of course we will be burning up a nice ship. Good prize money in those and this one sounds small enough for our band to run. Might give us some nice independence. Something to think about."

Veins bulge in the Taurus neck and his knuckles whiten I clenched fists as he leans closer to Harvest, his hulking mass squaring to her smaller frame. In a deep throaty growl then, "You would do well to remember that."

With another growl, Barratore whirls from her and storms towards the building. He has no idea what he will accomplish inside, but he strides with purpose. The information about the pirate king being a vampire becoming a muddled fog in his anger at Harvest's request and the confirmation that a Minotaur was indeed part of this and the dishonor his actions were heaping upon him and his clan

Coming to a stop in front of one of the metal doors he strikes once with a great fist with a resounding Thung. He was not getting through that without a hammer or heavy mace and he was not going to risk his blade. Barratore. Stares at the door for a few moments and then returns outside.

"I have an oil that will make a weapon magical, but only enough for a single weapon." His anger seems to have abated to a degree, but clearly not all. "So what is our plan to be? They surely have a faster way to shore than rowing in a small boat if they need to."

The Heroes agree with the pirates request and see his life ended in the most humane and way possible.

The group tends to agree that it is highly likely that the Pirate King is a Vampire.

Tactics are discussed but nothing is truly agreed upon. There are silver weapons, but why would they have been kept here? What are in those other rooms? Will they be able to take control of the ship? How wise is it to try and ambush a pirate at night?

These are all questions that will hopefully be answered in the coming hours.

He is angry. She had offended him.

The eyes of Harvest Moon mirror her hurt and confusion as they follow the retreating form of Barratore Steelwind. She must think of what it was that she had done wrong. But, first, there was the task at hand. The promise. The wish of the pirate. Harvest Moon rises from the back of the unconscious human. It was her promise. It would have to be a task that she executes herself. With all of the self-doubt and hesitation that accompanies her own knowledge her limits, Harvest Moon draws the polearm from her back. The blade of the polearm would be the most appropriate instrument by which to accomplish this thing. With great care, she aligns the blade with the neck of the human pirate. Harvest Moon draws upon her concentration to make the cleanest of cuts. The blade goes up. The blade comes down. The cut is deep. It is quick - and, hopefully, without pain.

Later, Harvest Moon walks through the building, examining the rooms. She holds the book of Grul the Half-orc, comparing the entries to the room for any possible connection. She examines the stout steel of the doors and the stone of the walls. Then she exits the building and looks up to the eaves of the building.

"If we cannot enter the rooms through the doors or through the walls," asks Harvest Moon, "perhaps we can enter through the ceiling. It is uncommon, I think, for roofs and ceilings to be made of stone. We might break in through the roof."

Harvest Moon begins an abortive climb, searching for handholds and such. But the smooth vertical wall is daunting. She retrieves her rope from the dead body of the pirate. But how to secure it at the top? She recalls the grapnel of the dwarf Arno who remained in the hidden valley of the Catpeople. "Does anyone have a hook for the end of this rope?" she asks.

OOC: Huh, rather quite today.

Harvest finishes her grim business and Hert dutifully performs the ceremonies associated with his profession.

The rest of the group is silent, perhaps in reverence to the deceased.

Harvest attempts to scale the building, but is unsuccessful in climbing the smooth stone wall. She asks if anyone has a grappling rope and receives no response.

Hert muses about using fly and invisibility to drive a stake through the Pirate Kings heart before the battle even begins. Others wonder if it is possible to keep the battle from taking place tonight at all.

A little unhappy about the pirates demise .... Peza continues her search for oil ....hoping for a large supply .... idea's flash through her head ... maybe the fiery gnome is growing on her but the idea of using the oil as a trap stays in her head ....

With the ebb and flow knowledge of the river in her mind ... she eyes spots where she could pour some by the dock or on the dock ... even upstream so a floating wall of fire floats down the river ... causing confusion and lighting up the pirate kings crew and movements .... scouting out the dock area she looks for torch posts ... " they would be lit to help guide them in " muses the ranger .... " just toss the lit torches onto the floating oil or oil coated dock and whoosh ... up in flames "

The raven haired girl tracks down the gnome and suggests her plan of action ... fire action

Edison reaches into his bag and pulls out a grappling hook and some silk rope. He begins tieing the rope to the hook making sure it's tight. Once secured he yanks a little harder. He begins to swing the hook in small arcs, picking up steam and larger circles. Finally at the apex of one of the circles he lets the rope go shooting the hook to go over the lip of the roof hoping it catches on something.

"It would be good, I think, to delay our fight with Nathaniel Morelock the Pirate King and his crew until the sun rises tomorrow morning. To do this, I think that we must prevent the ship from departing."

"Gerox Shale has power to turn you invisible. And Hert of Gargul has said that he can bless you with the power to fly. Do you think that with such powers you can prevent the ship from leaving?"

Harvest Moon eyes the rope, watching as Edson Kazil tests the fastness of the grapnel. Next would be to ascend to the roof and see if there might be an ingress there.

Barratore will provide a boost to assist any who want to make it to the rooftop or a head start on the rope that Edson just put up. "I can see no way of preventing the ship from coming in until tomorrow. It will be here in a few hours, likely after the sun has set. We hide on the dock, in the trees and around the warehouse and open fire on the ship as soon as we can. If we force the ship to turn and flee for open waters then we raze this depot and return to Rum. We can then supply for a vampire hunt and give better information to the authorities." Barratore looks doubtful at Edson and Harvest, "If they are any kind of sailors, they will be able to repair a broken rudder I would think. And even if not, what would you have us do? Flee deep into the jungle to whittle away the hours in the hopes the mighty trail we blaze cannot be followed. Even if they will not attack us, the kobolds will surely inform of our whereabouts."

"Vision is a problem for us in a night battle. Setting several blazes as the fight begins would allow of a full view of the battle and enemies. We need to soak several areas in oil."

Barratore begins rounding up torches and oil from inside the building and any that might be in the crates as well as any that the PC's have to get a full count of the supply

Gerox says, "Maybe the idea of taking out the rudder only slows them down and they can repair the ship but it does stall them. We are really waiting for daylight. I doubt the kobolds are working with the vampire. I bet they fear him as much as I do!

We need to find a way to isolate the crew and pick some off. Either we make traps which will slow them down or kill them, trap the boat in the middle of the water with underwater mines to damage it and keep it from docking where we can attack with missile and fire weapons.

If we can find a way to stop the boat before it can dock with some sort of device, and soak it with oil and set it afire, that will keep the crew busy both fighting the fire and dodging our arrows. Any ideas on how to stop the boat?

Harvest Moon nods, her face in wrapped in an expression of solemn thought. "Yes, you are right, Hert of Gargul." A sigh escapes her. "I think that you are right. They will easily fix the ship before sunrise. It is, perhaps, best to face directly the men of Nathaniel Morelock the Pirate King."

She lifts her eyes to the grapnel of Edson Kazil while forming a reply to his thought upon a leader for the League Adventurers. What is a leader? Is the leader a teacher? No. Sometimes a teacher is a leader. But not always. In her life in the Contested Kingdoms, leader were, more often than not, bullies. They were also, more often than not, the strongest of a band.

"You wish a leader, Edson Kazil, so that we may be decisive? You wish us to bind ourselves to the decisions of one?" Harvest Moon looks about, her eyes finding each of her fellow League Adventurers in turn. Who would see all and make good decisions? Who's actions would she best understand?

"If you wish a leader, Edson Kazil," says Harvest Moon, "I would chose Peza."

Barratore returns with the pitch and oil. "This should be enough to set alight multiple sections of the dock. We can cover sections in pitch, lighting it at our best opportunity to keep the area lit and to divide of hinder our foes." On the talk of a leader, Barratore adds nothing, that was not a concern or thought at the moment. The magic of the oil did not last overly long, so it would eed to be applied when the pirates were close. Perhaps even after he and Brom fired their initial arrow volley.

Barratore takes one of the silver battle axes. He was not good with the smaller design of the weapon, but it would perhaps be better than nothing. He hands the Oil of Magic Weapon to Hert. "Take one of the silver long swords and apply this when they are close so that you can strike the vampire."

Barratore then sets about creating a thick line to divide the dock and to coat the first sections of it where a boat would pull up to let men off. "We can light it as they disembark A few oil soaked rags can be lit and thrown. Should do the trick."

Barratore also looks about for torch brackets, where the pirates have things set to provide light and makes sure they are set so that they will be on when the ship is coming. Even if those sources are inside the building

I listed the pitch and the oil, but most everything else is some kind of trade good, food, or something. Not much that can really be used against the pirate king and such aside from the oil and pitch. Also, most of those items still have markings that show who they once belonged to... using that and the logbook, the could potentially be returned to their owners.

Gerox smiles at Harvest and says, "You tall folk all look the same to me, especially in armor." We will never find a way to stop them but if we can slow them down, funnel them into kill zones and traps we can wound, weaken and pick some of them off before we get into hand to hand."

Here are some suggestions. Cut holes into the dock, disguise them and pitch some folks into the water or maybe trap them into nets? Yes they will eventaully get out but they will not be organized. Make some caltrops to slow down others and hinder their movement and then catch them in some burning oil?

Find a way to threaten their ship. Catch it on fire so some have to fight the fire while others fight us. Again it splits them up. Will we burn down the ship. I doubt it but it adds to the confusion.

Finally we need to concentrate on the minotaur and the vampire. Everyone needs to strike out at one of them first. I think the minotaur makes the most sense. If we concentrate a round of missile fire on him and take him down quickly, it will hurt their morale and make the fight easier. The vampire is going to be a bear. We have to stay away from him. If he closes, he can drain our lives away. Frankly the undead sicko scares the curl out of my hair."

Gerox paces a bit and then says, "Whatever we decide, we need to make a decision and get to work. If Peza is going to be our leader, this might be a good time to test her leadership skills. Oh one more thing, we need a lookout. I want a little bit of warning before that boat shows up!"

Harvest Moon squats on the rooftop examining the material of which it is made. Can they break through from above where they could not from below?

As she ponders the question of how to enter the locked rooms of the building, Harvest Moon also considers the ideas voiced by the other League Adventurers on preparations for fighting the pirates.

"I have seen mother birds, Gerox Shale," she says, "who draw cats from their nests by pretending a lame wing. I think that we might do the same to bring the pirates to your ... kill zone."

"First, I think, we must take the boxes from the dock. They are goods and should not be burned. We can place them at the sides of the building. Maybe we can hide behind them. Or, perhaps place the boxes behind the building. Next, we will pour the pitch and oil onto the wood of the dock and await the pirates. One of us ... I think maybe Edson Kazil ... or ... maybe Peza, can wear some clothing of one of the pirates. Place some blood upon the face. Pretend a wound. Disguised in this manner, this person must draw the pirates to the dock. Stumble into the door of the building maybe, and fall to the ground. Maybe sit against the wall and clutch their wound."

"When the pirates come to the dock, Gerox Shale or I can set the oil and pitch alight. The pirates will be burned and we can set upon them. We can shoot them with arrows and meet them at the edge of the flames so that they may not easily escape."

The half-elfish girl raises her head then. Her senses are alert. Had she heard something? mwahahaha ... What was that? The sound was mirthful. And it was evil. But was it real? Harvest Moon shakes her head. Only her imagination. Perhaps.

Edson makes it to the roof, and finds that he can see jungle for several hundred feet. The roof is surprisingly, or not depending on your thought process, made of the same stone as the walls. It is obvious this building was not made in haste. In fact once one the roof, you say that it is actually made to walk on, and there is a locked metal trap door coming from inside one of the locked rooms. Edson notes that the locking mechanism looks almost identical to the mechanism on the downstairs door that seems to be where this door exits.

Looking out over the river the guesses that depending on the point, it is 130-180ft wide in various places.

The group speaks amongst themselves of leaders and plans and traps and such... how long will they talk before setting to action?

OOC: Not sure what is meant by "how much time tonight?". I am assuming you mean how long until nightfall. Best guess would be 4 to 6 hours until night fall. If you mean how long until the Pirate King arrives... all you know is that he is expected sometime tonight.

The mouth of Harvest Moon tightens in a moue of disapproval. She offers a stern look to the stone and steel that bars their way. Then, with a sigh, she lets the thought go. One does not always get what one wishes. Effort does not always guarantee success. But they had to try. The sin is not in failure. The sin is in never having tried.

"I think that the key is likely in the possession of the Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock," she speculates aloud. "A vampire can easily come to this rooftop. And perhaps he uses this trapdoor as a way to come and go."

"Let us go down, Edson Kazil, and help the others in preparations for the arrival of the pirates. I think," she says as she begins down the rope, "that with a helm from one of the slain ones, and some blood and dirt upon your face, that you would not be recognizable as an elf from across the waters of the river. Once the pirates are close and upon the dock, the ruse will no longer be necessary."

As she nears the ground, Harvest Moon releases her hold upon the rope and springs outward from the wall. On her face is a great grin of delight as she falls free. At the last moment she tucks and turns in the air, hitting the ground with her feet, taking the impact in the spring of her legs, letting the momentum carry her into a roll, and then rising from the roll to a stand.

"Sleep well, Gerox Shale," she says, with only the slightest of breathiness to her voice to indicate she had just leapt down from a height over twice her own. "We will work and be ready for the pirates. If needs be, I can throw flame very far, so you needn't place yourself in the path of harm should you not wish to."

Edson searches the bodies of the deceased to Find some armor that will fit him. He looks For a helmet to help obscure his face enough for the ruse to work.

Edson with the help of others, prepares his pirate disguise. (Roll a disguise check.)

Gerox goes to sleep hoping to get 8 hours of rest before the Pirate King makes his presence known.

Harvest helps Edson with his disguise before beginning to work on the traps with Barratore and the others.

Barratore prepares 10 impromptu Molotov Cocktails. Hert also helps him with this and the pitch project. (Please describe the trap one more time to be certain I have it.)

With all of the preparations complete darkness begins to fall over the island.

OOC: Any last minutes things that need to be taken care of... go ahead and do, otherwise the next post will probably begin combat. Or not. You never can tell.

Harvest Moon pauses in her labors. Something in the gnome is so funny, sleeping as he is. It is so tempting to take the end of a charred stick and draw upon his lip a dark mustache. The thought brings a smile to the lips of Harvest Moon before she quashes it with a frown. Amusing as it might be, it is an ill way in which to treat a friend and ally. Is she bad for having such thoughts, ponders the half-elfish girl as she returns to moving the boxes of goods from the dock? Even though she did not, indeed, act upon it? That question, in and of itself, does more to further thoughts of self recrimination.

Later, as the sun hovers atop the edge of the disk of the Wold, over the evening meal, Harvest Moon informs the other League Adventurers where her position will be. "I will be a very short eighty steps down river to the south," says Harvest Moon. I will conceal myself in a place where I can see a goodly ways down the river and return quickly once I have spotted the ship of Nathaniel Morelock the Pirate King. In this way, we might have a few more moments of warning before the arrival of the vampire."
