Shonti see's that Dernock and Terser have his first target covered, but there is now a threat approaching those by the food stand rapidly. He rounds the front of the food stand, to get a better angle on attacking the wyvern. The sorcerer calls for his Spectral Hand to go forth and shock the dragon coming too close for comfort. The ghostly hand travels from him at a frightening pace and pokes the wyvern, sending quite a few volts of electricity throughout the flying monsters body. ============================================= OOC: Effective AC=18 with Inspire Courage bonus. Urval ponders at the wyvern resisting his blindess, not going to try something similar again, and looks to the other target, sure in the group's ability to take down the second. W3 was too high for him to affect him directly, but perhaps a bit of indirect inhibition may be useful, as well as providing cover for the civilians to escape. He quickly moves to O9, pulling out an arrow as he begins muttering words of magic, a dense mist seeping out from his robes, as a large radius around him becomes shrouded in mist.
OOC: Move to O9 and and cast obscuring mist
Obscuring mist: 6m duration, 20' radius sphere, obscures all sight beyond 5' away from you.

Sam shouts,"Dernock's caught! Take that thing apart!" He steps around the serving stand to hide from the approaching wyvern and get sight on the one to the east. He fires a glitterdust spell at a wyvern, which has no effect. (W1 will= 23 passed)
Terser and Shinto require no prompting from Sam. While joined by Devlin's elemental, they quickly slay the beast. Dernock finds himself a bloody mess, but alive and free of the monster's jaws.
Meanwhile, the masked ranger takes a step and releases three more arrows. All three hit the wyvern's upper torso, each marking vital organs. The arrows, arc sparks across the scaly hide. Shonti's spectral hand then shocks the beast as Devlin's other elemental connects. The wyvern lets out a screeching howl and crashes to the ground. Urval's mist forms around the stand, hiding all in the immediate area.
The young boy and girl run and join each other at the near tables. Suddenly, a middle-aged woman runs in to the mix. She is dressed in commoner's garb and wielding a knife used to prepare food. She desperately yells as she runs,"ARUS! ARA! REEEEE!" The children yell in unison,"Mommy!"
Bruagh yells out a challenge to the remaining wyvern. He pays no attention to the warrior as he has a victim in mind, the dwarf who killed his brethren...Terser. A loud screeching roar bellows from the wyvern as it dives for the dwarf. Terser braces for the attack, with glaive in hand. Does the attack of opportunity hit? None could tell in all of the excitement of the moment (not even the DM). The dragon wildly thrashes at Terser. Though the multiple attacks are aimed with hate and malice, all miss. (hit AC 12, 11, 12, 14) The flying reptile gains altitude to prepare for the next swooping attack.

The last few moments of the battle flash by in the blink of an eye. The final wyvern dives at Terser. He gives a quick swipe with his glaive, which connects with the monster's larynx. No further vocalizations will be heard from this soon to be dead beast. The wyvern slashes back and misses Terser with all attacks.
Arrows and a bolt from Oathbreaker and Sam thunk into its side. Terser braces his glaive at a 45 degree angle and connects just below the wyvern's sternum. The dwarf hangs onto his weapon as it dissects the dragon.
Bruagh and Dernock charge for the same table to jump-attack from off of it. Dernock finds the table's summit first. Bruagh jumps just after him. Dernock stumbles during the dual acrobatic assault and falls in front of Bruagh. The ex-paladin uses his brother's folly to his advantage, as he step-jumps off of the falling Dernock. His axe grinds into the wyvern from the base of the tail forward. Terser remains in the fixed stance as his glaive continues to cut through the lizard's gut. Bruagh and Terser's weapons meet in the middle with a loud "clang". The beast continues to fall as it abdominal contents rain down on the now prone Dernock. The creature hits the ground with a loud, thunderous "thud".
Terser and Bruagh find themselves face-to-face, panting, and with their mighty, dwarven weapons crossed. Dernock finds himself covered with...stuff.
Devlin focuses to the north, where he spots two wyverns flying away. A victorious cry comes from the Clan Lord's men.

The Oathbreaker brings up another arrow, training it on the retreating wyverns, but decides against it. Whispering another word, the electricity on his bow dies and he turns to his allies. Looking around, the dwarf can sense the celebration is about to be back in full swing. With us at the center of it, yet again. Not looking for another large encounter with anything or anyone, the masked dwarf strides past Braugh, muttering, "I'll be at the tents." As Shonti shows his concern for the mother and children, she does not acknowledge him right away. Once she stops hugging them, she realizes the presence of the sorcerer and quickly charges to embrace him. The commoner then turns to her son and begins "signing" to him. Shonti and Sam easily recognize that she is using a very primitive, functional version of common sign language. It is clear that this communication is very basic in structure. Based on the attempted, formed words heard during the battle, it is also safe to guess that she has not always been deaf.
"She says thank you for helping us." The boy pauses for a moment, now obviously speaking for himself,"She runs this place. She cooks for the people at the festival. She's been doing it forever."
A dwarven man wearing a hard leather apron bursts into view. He runs up to the group and scans the carnage. His eyes well up as they meet with members of the group.
"Ye saved ma family and our livelihood. Ma name's Herog Irongate. I owe ye ma life."
The man watches as Devlin and the others harvest the poison sacs from the wyvern. They are found intact, but Devlin is unsure of their salvageability to make use of the poison as the wyverns appear to be in general poor health (aside from the massive wounds). Nonetheless, all three sacs are easily attained.***
The Clan Lord and some of his guard find their way to the group. They are all battered and bloodied, but alive. The Clan Lord observes the Grim Guard's handy work and solemnly nods. It is clear that he's pleased, but in no mood to celebrate.
Dernock gets some much needed healing from Urval, but still smells like...stuff.
No victory seems worth celebrating to Oathbreaker. Will any deed ever bring atonement to the self-tortured dwarf? The ranger silently strides off into the darkness.
Shortly thereafter, a crowd forms around the scene. Some cry and others stare silently. One feeling is shared by all. Relief that the attack has ceased.

Herog's wife gladly refills the supply of any dwarf in need of rum. Her children run off to tell others of the terrifying experience. The deeds of the Grim Guard continue to spread throughout the Scab.
The Clan Lord takes Shinto's ribbing and backslapping surprisingly well (He doesn't call his guard to imprison Shinto immediately. He still hates it.).
"I have dead ta pay tribute ta. I have no time fer rum er celebratin."
With that, the Clan Lord, followed by the remainder of his guard and other festival going men, head towards the dead.

Shinto is ready to head out for the night; pressing on until mid-night or 2 am. Making camp until late morning.
We don't wanna press all through the night an be tired or exhausted when we meet up with our spider beastie. We should be fully rested if were to travel a ways to get to em. If we can make it within only a few hours; me says lets head on down. But if its more'en eight, we need te camp before headin into its den.
So; if we head out soon we should make a camp for at least 8 hours. Giving everyone about 6 hours of sleep. If it's only a few hours walk to the cave/den then I say we get to Hunting.

As most want to get moving to take on the abyssal threat, Shonti finds the Clan Lord preparing for the night's ceremony. The leader is found just outside the healer's tent. Shonti sees five of the Clan Lord's guard laid out in full dress uniform. Each of the dead rest on neat, cots made of wooden branches that are lashed together. Attendants obsessively care for the appearance of the bodies.
Ironbane turns to Shonti,"It'll take ya a little more than a day to reach the tunnel. Stay with us tonight. Honor our brave, fallen brothers."
With that the dwarf turns away from Shonti and continues to watch over his loyal warriors.
I don't remember hearing a distance to the tunnels. I'm guessing it's not that close.

But, the fact that they were warriors means his ax is a fine symbol of Dwarven respectrespect Afterwards the rough dwarf sees himself to a bath and finds his way to a tent. He spends the hours before sleep rebraiding his beard and fixing his longdredlocks. Seperating them into square points on his scalp.

The ceremony commences away from the festival grounds. Light slowly fades from the sky. The dwarven dead are carried by their fellow soldiers. Ironbane watches stoically as each is placed on one of the piles of wood. The Clan Lord himself carries a torch to each of the fallen. Before lighting each pyre, he loudly proclaims each of their names. The leader then speaks briefly about each of the fallen as he sets fire to the wood. His words take the distinct tone of a fellow dwarf and friend and less as purely coming from their leader. Nonetheless, he remains stone faced as he moves from body to body. Aside from Ironbane's short speeches, the only sounds heard are of crackling flames and the warm breeze that gently passes along the surface of the Scab. The ceremony concludes as the bodies burn. Everyone except the attendants shamble away from the grounds. The Grim Guard finds their way to bed for the night.

One by one, members of the Grim Guard wake up and congregate by an open fire. Most festival goers are still sleeping. The attack, followed by the late night funeral warrants the additional slumbering.
As the group assembles and checks the last of their gear, Herog approaches. He looks half dead and absolutely exhausted.
"I wanted to see ya off this morning before ya battle that abyssal beast. I'll never b'able to thank ya enough."
He approaches Terser and holds out three short lengths of chain. Two of the chains have a wyvern fang faceted to one of their ends. The third chain has three wyvern claws attached at even intervals down it's length. The facet points are banded with thin bands of steel and wrapped decoratively with strands of leather. At the unadorned end of each chain is a locking ring.
"I know that you all saved ma family, but my son told me what ya did on your own. I've been working on these through the night. I'm not a master craftsmen, but I think this'll get the point across to your enemies. The teeth go'n the head of your glaive, near the blade. The claws hang from the tail of the weapon."

A Days March Tuesday April 16th, 2013 5:38:43 PM
The group breaks from the festival and begins towards the caves they were directed to. It will take the entire day to make the outer tunnels and so there is no time to waste. Spells and prayers are prepared, gear checked, packed and stowed and the Grim Guard sets forth again into the Scab and this time they plan to do battle with a nightmare from another world.
The journey is long, but uneventful up the pass, ever higher until finally the party comes to a side entrance to mines. The sun is heading past the western mountains and night is fast upon the party. There is ample room close to or not to the mines side entrance to set camp. The party could even backtrack several hundred yards if they wished. There have been few traces of other creatures about for the last 4 hours of the journey, save an occasional eagle riding the thermals high above.

Devlins Survival roll skins and butchers the 1st Wyvern. It produces enough to craft 2 sets of armor (Leather Hide or Studded) You need additional rolls for additional creatures
On Poison, Wyverns are technically dragons and thus Know of Arcana is required to know about them and where their poison sacs may be. the CR is 21. Roll only needs to be made once and can be done by anyone
A second survival DC 16 is required to extract the poison sac. There is a 5% chance per handling of a poison sac that the person handling it poisons themselves and will need to make a Fort DC 17 save or suffer 1d4 con and be poisoned

Tunnels Friday April 19th, 2013 2:09:10 PM
A quick conversation sets the stage and the group heads into the tight tunnel. Oathbreaker taking about a 20' lead with Bruagh next and then Shinto, followed by Devlin and the rest. there is some concern by the Grim Guard that with such cramp quarters, they may have to approach battle with the abyssal horror differently. How does such a reputedly large creature manuever in the tight spaces that have thus far presented themselves. Devlin mentions a spell he has prepared that will assist the several against possible poisoning. The duration of the protection is indeed long, but is it long enough?
The tunnel drives into the mountain plunging Sam into darkness within moments. The grade of the sloping passage increases. Knowledge Engineering DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { This is a secondary cut air shaft to provide protection to the mines in case of cave in or gas blow out. }
Further into the mountain the party treks. The tunnel makes a hard right and runs away again at a steady downward slope. Ahead is still blackness beyond 60' for Oathbreaker and no sounds beyond their own heavy boots can be heard thunding in the passage. There is no echo as the stone, so close and pulled about the party, seems to imprison all sound generated by the Grim Guard.

As he does so a faint light encompasses them and it looks at though thousands of tiny spiders crawl across their skin. That should do it, should last for about a quarter of the day so the sooner we find this beast the better chance they will still be workin'.
As Sam's lights dance along the hall Devlin helps to watch for any signs or sounds of the creature.

Sam casts Dancing Lights and Devlin casts resist poison on Bruagh & Shinto. Some whistling, dancing and the shaking of heads is all performed quite well as the 7 dwarves head to work. Sam munches on an apple found in his pack. The tunnel continues down to another switchback and then again to another and so on. Sam recasts the Dancing Lights each time the spell winks out and so an honest measure of time on the descent can be kept track of. The Grim Guard know they are deep within the mountain as over 2 hours have elapsed on their march down.
Ahead Oathbreaker finally notes a change in the tight passage. At the end of his darkvision the passage opens up. 55' ahead, the right and left walls as well as the ceiling vanish. The floor transforms from stone, to set of planks 5' in width and then just beyond the floor drops away into the black.

Oathbreaker hurries back to get the group to be silent and quickly succeeds. Sam sends the Dancing Lights ahead to get a better understanding of what the group is looking at. The Secondary air shaft the Grim Guard had been travelling down ends at a mining chamber almost 50' from the floor. The wooden floor is the scaffolding built about the chamber so the shaft could be cut. The Scaffolds ring the chamber, which measure nearly 100' across, at a constant height of 50'. The ceiling cannot be seen from the initial vantage point of the Grim Guard in the tunnel.
Shinto casts Detect magic, Oathbreaker and Bruagh move forward for a better look, the others falling inline behind them. While Oathbreaker is quite stealthy, the same cannot be said for Bruagh, or the rest piling along behind. The front pair make it to the very edge of the tunnel, not quite stepping onto the scaffolds, a look about. Oathbreaker spots movement to the left, on the wall about 50' away about half way between the scaffolds and the floor. A black shape as large as any giant the dwarf has ever seen. He can discern the 2 great front legs with viscous hooking barbs running their length and ending in spikes as deadly as a long spear. A hard, well armored body crouches behind these formidable weapons and the creature seems quite adapted to climbing is it slowly moves forward on the other 6 legs.
The party is single file in the tunnel OathBreaker at the entrance [not on the wooden scaffolds and the only one able to see the creature] Braugh 5' Devlin 10' please pick a spot in line beyond this point.

Devlin opens his eye as a slight rumbling is heard through the wall. Got some help on the way lads. The druid hops forward a step and peaks around the wall seeing the massive creature causes him to flinch a little. Where in the nine hells did that thing come from? Good thing were here ta kill it. Muttering under his breath Devlin points at the spider and a few small orbs of light fly towards it. The light looks like faeries and as they hit the creature it begins to glow with a faint green light. Raeb continues her watch.
Unseen to all, the earth elementals burrow through the wall only to erupt next to the spider trying to shove it off the wall.

Devlin steps forward and casts Faerie Fire upon the spider creature, outlining it.
The 3 Earth elementals charge from within the rock, but are not able to budge the massive creature.
Urval commands the creature to fall, and it suddenly plunges like a stone.
The scaffolding proves to be no match for the creatures bulk, shattering into splinters at the point of impact. Sections drop away and fall to the floor with the great abyssal horror.
Oathbreaker shifts his sights slightly and puts another arrow into the creature.
Terser moves towards the lift off the side of the scaffolding and sets his blood to boiling.
Bruagh continues to struggle with the webbing, but still cannot get free of it.
The spider creature, gains it's feet and heads across the chamber towards Oathbreaker, but is still upon the floor nearly 50' below the scaffolding.
