A Ship on the River -- DM Zach
Monday April 22nd, 2013 5:29:10 PM

With everyone rested and in place, night falls, and the jungle is dark. Very dark. There is only a sliver of moon and the vast majority of what light is available comes from the stars. The water is quiet but pitch black as well.

Shortly before midnight, Harvest, from her vantage point down the river sees a ship slowly coasting down the river on the current. It is still several hundred feat away from her location which is a short distance from the depot.

OOC: Anyone with a disguise who has not yet done so... please make a disguise roll.

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF17; CMD 21; HP27/34) - Al
Monday April 22nd, 2013 5:55:01 PM

The land is the land to the elf-born eyes of Harvest Moon. At night, below the light of the stars, it is but different in that it is a silver land. Harvest Moon slips back from her hiding spot at the first sight of the approaching ship. With all stealth, she returns.

"They come," are the words that she speaks to the other League Adventurers. She takes up a position on the side of the building furthest from the river. Her hand goes unconsciously to the polearm on her back. Its presence is comforting. But it its not yet the time for it. Cautiously, she peers around the corner. She will call on the blessing of flame first. Once the pirates have all entered their smaller boats to row from ship to dock. Then she will call on the flame. Once the pirates have climbed to the dock, the flame will spring the trap. The dock will leap with the flame and become the killing zone of Gerox Shale. Then would come the time for the polearm. Then would come the time.

Brom has no idea what he is suppose to be doing other than the plan he has laid out in his head, kill'em on the dock or kill'em on the boat. Disguise seems like a good idea, but being a half-a-head taller than the other humans none of the clothes really fit. So, Brom finds a place near the dock to hide behind, or at least as near as possible. He readies his bow and waits for the boat to get closer.

Barratore wanted to cover the dock area closest to the water, where a longboat or rowboat would tie up with the pitch. He wants to cover a good 10' of depth of it. Within the pitch he wants to place 5 of the oil soaked flasks.. A trail of pitch goes from the dock all the way down the bank in front of the building and interspersed with be the remaining flasks.

Barratore has no way of donning a disguise and takes up a position at the base of a large tree about 110' from the dock and puts the tree between him and the river. He will sit with his bow in hand and simply wait It will be up to Gerox to light the dock, or perhaps even Harvest as she said it was within her power as well. He would sit, wait and watch. Trying not to move until targets presented themselves.

Gerox is awoken to the word that the ship has been spotted. He moves to the docks and comes to rest near Harvest and looks around for Hert. He says, "The last plan I heard was you, me and Hert to take on the vampire. I would like to do that from a distance if at all possible! Has anything else changed since I was asleep? Who is setting the fire off? Did we make some traps?

"Brom! Brom, come here, please." In a terse whisper filled with the tension of the moment, Harvest Moon beckons to the Rager. "Come behind the building where they will not see you. We will rely upon Edson Kazil to draw the attention of the pirates, and to signal us when the pirates are upon the dock."

"Edson Kazil, it would be best if you are just in the doorway of the building. The side that faces the dock. From this place you may easily step to cover. We might also easily hear you from this side of the building through the door that is here."

"So it begins..." nervously whispers Hert to himself. He picks up his shield from the ground, and awkwardly stretches in his armor. He sees Gerox looking for him and as silently as his clanking armor permits, joins him.

"I'll confront the vampire hand-to-hand. He's... he's stronger than me, no doubt, but Gargul can help me hold him back long enough for you to destroy him. If he tries to go after you, Gerox..."
Hert takes something from his backpack and gives it to Gerox. It is a symbol of an eye, similar to one on Hert's forehead, but made of wood. "It is Gargul's holy symbol. If the vampire comes near, show it to him. It will win you some time."

Then they can come help with the vampire." Gerox mutters the last sentence as the thought of trying to hold off a vampire with a holy symbol sinks in.

A Ship on the River -- DM Zach
Tuesday April 23rd, 2013 7:02:40 PM

The Pirate Ship is sleek and smaller than expected. It is quite obviously built for speed. It is made of a very dark wood and is almost black, with black sails. Not only is it built for speed, but built for stealth at night. This is not what was expected.

This ship seems small enough to actually pull right against the docks unlike initially thought. Had the ship been larger, like most pirate ships, it would have most likely had to have used smaller rowboats to get the goods ashore. Most troubling indeed.

The sleek, small, dark ship turns out wide and pulls up to the docks, parallel to the shore and perpendicular to the docks. It drops anchor and large moor ropes are thrown over the side at each end to be attached to the docks. A a long wooden plank is lowered to the dock to give access between the dock and ship. A gruff voice calls out to the shore.

"What'en da blazes be takin' ye so long?!?! Get'em moore's 'tached to 'dem docks... NOW!!!" It is hard to tell what the voice came from, but it sounds large and in charge... probably the Minotaur First-Mate.

Harvest Moon waits. Once they leave the ship. Only as they leave the ship. Then she will call upon the blessing of fire.

Harvest Moon whispers to Edson to act injured.

He responds by unceremoniously falling into the water and remaining there on the bottom.

Gerox urges someone from the group to go help.

Hert pleads for Brom to stop.

Then he realizes, Brom isn't one of his guys. In fact, he is much larger and not wearing clothes resembling a pirate. "Arrr, be on guard, It be a trap! Hey big fella, why dontcha tell me what you did to our men and what it is you plan on doing to us?"

How to coax this from the bad place into which it has fallen? Harvest Moon wracks her brain.

"Laugh, Brom," she speaks the words through the Message magic of Gerox Shale. "Tell Brom to laugh, Gerox Shale."

"And taunt them. Tell them that you yourself have bested the other pirates. The one who fell into the water, Edson Kazil, was the last. Tell them that you wish to join them and will prove your worth by besting the First Mate Minotaur Kress in personal combat."

Yes. It is what Domi would do. The challenge. Perhaps not the ruse. But it is bold. And not entirely without its own truth.

Gerox message's to Brom, "Barratore is invisible and heading your way! If you accept his challenge, your crazy but since most Barbarians aren't quite right in the head, at least make sure he comes down on to the dock."

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF17; CMD 21; HP27/34) - Al
Monday April 29th, 2013 9:55:31 AM

The Minotaur Pirate Kress is clever. The fire trap will no longer draw them in. Two years or more ago, Harvest Moon, once brought to this point, would have taken her mother and fled. It was the best thing to do when things went badly. But here, she is not with her feeble mother. Here too she is not the same Harvest Moon.

Edson Kazil, also, is somewhere in the water. And, a quick look about reveals the absence of Barratore Steelwind. The League Adventurers are not in a position to withdraw even should they wish to. But what to do? Doubt assails the mind of Harvest Moon. What to do?

The moons light the darkness. The wind rustles leaves in the trees. The river glistens, silvery and black. The vampire is about. She can feel it. All that it needs is time. The time to stalk them. Time that the Minotaur Pirate Kress works to buy. Buying time. Reeling in the lives of the League Adventurers.

Then it comes to Harvest Moon. It comes to her like the howling winds of a gale that sweep her off her feet. She knows what must be done. Quite loudly, Harvest Moon calls out the words of a blessing, and then, even as the power fills her from the earth and sky, she is barreling around the corner of the building and onto the dock.

"Haha-hoho!" laughs Harvest Moon. She stops in plain view of the pirates. "You speak of the livers of chickens?!? Minotaur Pirate Kress, come fight me!" shouts the diminutive half-elven girl in her baggy robes.

It feels good. Good to laugh in the face of such danger. It is what Domi would do. She knows this. She feels this now. Even should she die here today, it would still be good.

"Ha! Do you hide from me? Do you crouch behind your ship before one as small as me?" cries Harvest Moon. "It is you who are the livers of chickens!" she calls out. All the while failing to mention, of course, the fearsome polearm on her back and the roaring ball of flame nestled in the palm of her hand.

Map is here. As before Sheet1 is the map, sheet 2 has the legend. On the rear of the ship there are two stairways that lead up to a higher point of the ship, and the steering wheel. It is about 10ft higher than the rest of the ship.

Storming the ship just seemed, well it didn't seem like the best of ideas, sure it would be exciting and all, but...Barratore's mind stopped turning on that subject as he started coming to his own conclusion. Yes, yes it would be very exciting to storm the ship and take her. Far more so than lying in wait.

Barratore moves to J/K-18/19 and draws his sword. He smiles broadly, though none can tell as he is invisible and with an edge of excitement in his voice, he responds to Hert, "I do believe we are."

Edson tries to play off his imposter status by acting as Pirate. This would have probably worked slightly better had you not been soaking wet. As there is a stand off of sorts, the Dwarf is knelt down behind you and notices the water dripping onto the deck. "WE HAVE A RAT ONBOARD!!! DIE!!!" The Dwarf moves towards Edson and attacks as another human follow his lead to do the same thing. Luckily both miss.

Two Humans lean over the rail and fire their longbows at Harvest Moon, though they both miss as well.

As soon as they pop up to shoot at Harvest, Peza is able to get an awesome shot off killing her one of her foes where he stands by severing his windpipe.

A Human and a the Half Orc both move in on Brom and both get a slice on him as she is engaged with Kress (I forgot and left off their flanking bonus as well.) (Hit AC 22 and 23 for 10 and 5 points of damage).

First Mate Kress moves towards Brom and slices deeply into the Barbarian. "Seems ya mighta bit off more than ya can chew BOY!!!" Brom takes 27 points of damage on a wicked slice to his upper torso. (Hit AC 32)

Brom attempts to return the blow and looks as if he will, but deflected off course by the minotaur's glaive at the last second.

The rest of the party seems to be waiting for the fire trap to be sprung before they actually spring into action.

There is bravery ... and then ... It is difficult to conceive of the severity of the wounds received by the Rager. And there is nothing to be done. The healing magic granted to her offers only the most meager of benefits. No distractions that she might provide will bolster the Rager's defenses enough. Only fortune can protect the Rager from another blow from Minotaur Pirate Kress. And, another such blow as that delivered just now will most surely bring Brom the Rager to his death. All that can be done is to improve the chances of Brom the Rager. If the Rager will not withdraw, then she must remove an attacker.

Peza's bolt takes the human two combines to bracket Brom the Rager. Harvest Moon throws her ball of flame and it touches him, searing flesh. With luck their combined attacks will bring this one down.

Harvest Moon then rushes up the ramp, stopping just outside the range of the polearm wielded by the Minotaur Pirate Kress.

@Barratore: 30ft from where you were (J,12) has you still 10ft short, 5ft if you have reach somehow, from H4 and makes you unable to attack this round, unless I missed something. Also, there were crates on the dock, but since I didn't mention them this time, we will just forget about them.

@Edson: Before you rolled stealth and mentioned you were hiding on the ship which I took to meant knelt down making a small target. When you say you stand up and face your allies holding your weapon out to the side, I take that to mean you are not hiding anymore and are trying to blend in.

@Harvest: Same issue as Barratore, as best I can tell, 40ft from where you were will not get you to where you can disarm the man. He is still 15ft away. Even with reach that is going to be 5ft short.

@Everyone else: Need you guys to post. These are your movements so far. I will factor in damage and such, but you guys may want to rethink your strategy. Those who are going to be a few feet short, change your actions if need be.

Brom's attack flays open the First Mates massive chest and causes him to gasp for air.

Edson swings at the dwarf but misses, before changing weapons.

Harvest Moon's small ball of fire smacks the minotaur for more damage.

First Mate Kress is severely injured but keeps swinging his glaive. He lands a solid hit to Brom's thigh gashing it open (20 points of damage). He then wisely (or cowardly depending on how you look at it) takes a step back since he is using a reach weapon.

The human and Half Orc both take 5ft steps to flank the Rager and attack but miss.

She gauges the strength and size of the Minotaur Pirate Kress. Despite the agile maneuvering of The Rager, he will take a wound as he moves in. Or so falls the assessment of Harvest Moon.

"Peza! Shoot the Minotaur Pirate Kress!" she calls out. He is most dangerous and gravely wounded. Felling him should win the day for the League Adventurers. Should the Vampire Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock appear while this First Mate Minotaur Pirate Kress still lives, things could go very badly.

With a short hop, Harvest Moon springs up the ramp and lashes out at the human pirate with her foot. The ball of her foot drives with great accuracy into a vulnerable place near the groin of the human pirate. The strike is not particularly strong, but the pain that it produces commonly stuns those of lesser constitution. Then she steps into the kick and turns, bringing an elbow around to quickly strike at the half-orc as well. But coming in with one's back turned to one's target is not the best of tactics. The half-orc is not where she expected that he would be, and her elbow strike glances from the armor of the half-orc pirate.

Brom deftly tumbles through the reach of the Minotaur and slides his BAS into the sternum of the first mate. His sword pops out the back of the creature. Being this close to the Minotaur, Brom realizes something is off about him... he just doesn't seem... natural. Religion DC 22 to realize Highlight to display spoiler: {He is a vampire thrall} @Brom: Please note that even thought I know you can not be flanked, the pirates do not and that is why they are getting in position to do so. I am not giving them a flanking bonus though. Thanks for point this out, but they will still try to flank you =).

Barratore moves forward but misses the pirate as he slings. The attack is very close though, taking bits of leather armor but not touching flesh.

Harvest Moon deftly strikes the pirate in the groin and a high pitched groan escapes his lips. He lowers his weapon for just a second and his knees seem as if they are going to buckle. He is a seasoned warrior however, and is able to remain on his feet and in the fight. Harvest turns her attack towards the half-orc who deftly moves out of the way of her attack.

Edson's longsword swings wide as he attacks the dwarf, his mind someplace else.

Peza let's her bolt fly at the first mate but misses as Brom is standing right in front of him.

Gerox sees that Brom has finished the First Mate, and decides to help even the odds for Edson. His magic missile does enough to put the injured pirate out of the fight.

Hert finally makes it to the fight, standing beside Harvest Moon

-------------------------
As Brom removes his BAS from the First Mate, he, and the others hear, the door to the cabin fly open. An extremely, pale, fit, and handsome man storms out of the cabin, a large swords in his hands. "What is the meaning of this?!?! You shall pay for your insolence!!!" The Pirate King is followed by two more pirates, quite obviously higher ranking than those currently on the deck.

The Pirate Kings large sword flames to life as he strolls towards Barratore. He grabs the sword in both hands over his head and swings downwards towards the Minotaur, however, at the last second he flourishes it backwards and brings from low to high, slashing the Barratore's lower abdomen.
Barratore takes 16 points of slashing damage and 4 fire damage for a total of 20 points of damage.

The two new pirates both move towards Barratore with the one right in front of him attacking to far to the right. The other pirate gets in place but does not yet attack.

The pirate standing next to Barratore that he attacked last round gets a very solid slice on the Minotaurs calf. Barratore takes 9 points of slashing damage.

The Dwarf makes a feeble attempt to attack Edson and strikes only air.

The last pirate and half-orc both attack Harvest Moon. The one she hit in the groin sends his attack too low, but the half-orc slashes perfectly across the monk's exposed back.
Harvest Moon takes 11 points of slashing damage.

At last. The Pirate King emerges. And it is now Barratore Steelwind who is in danger. There are many things that are inconvenient about being as large as a minotaur. Or, so it occurs to Harvest Moon in the moments before she attacks. One who is so large seems to present the greatest threat, and therefore becomes the natural target for aggressive foes.

So go her thoughts as she steps in and drives two punches into the chest of the already wounded human pirate. Her first strike lands hard, and she hears the bones of his ribs breaking. The second strikes to the softer flesh of the stomach. Added to the harm dealt by both Peza's bolt and her previous kick, this pirate should, as estimates Harvest Moon, now fall. In anticipation, she steps forward, hoping to take the place of the fallen pirate and block the half-orc from joining its fellows in an attack on Barratore Steelwind.

Well bloodied, she crouches, her teeth bared in a fierce growl. She will hold here. These pirates will not join the others.

Just giving you guys the news:

From Jerry,

Now for some announcements:

The new DMs for the Blackbird Lake restart are Zach and Ian. They will leaving Rum to move to this game. We have two new very capable DMs taking their place in Rum: Mark Reid and Tom Shilakes. Zach has already presented them with a present of a new short module for them to mess with before asking me for approval.

Recently, Carl Marshall decided to retire from DMing and Tanner Nielsen will be taking his place....well like immediately. ;)

The BBL restart game will begin once BBL finished the current module and we recruit two new players for the restart game.

Meanwhile, Derek and David are finishing the last couple of scenes on the Humble's Ford module. They and I hit a "real life busy spell" and failed our saves so that new game hit a slowdown for a time.

The switch from Zach and Ian to Mark and Tom should happen "about" Monday, the 20th of this month. Hopefully Mark and Tom will be contacting the Rum players soon or perhaps the players will beat them to the punch and email their DMs?

I just found out about this over the weekend and wrote a new module today (yes, in one day) so that you guys would have something to do. I did not want to pigeon hole the DM's with my original module I wrote. Anyways, I think you guys will like it. I have truly enjoyed this game and hate my stay with you guys will not be longer. My advice to you guys would be to spend less time planning, and just go for it... because for all the planning you did, it did not really get followed. Having a leader can be important, but I think everyone knowing what their role is happens to be more important. You guys did a great job of all excecuting a role so far this combat. Good job. DM post to come in a few hours. Going to sleep now.

Edson is so focused on the recently appeared vampire and his officers that he forgets to focus his attacks on the pirate in front of him. His attack is feeble and easily blocked.

The Mighty Barratore goes into a frenzied attack mode as the new arrivals appear. He doesn't touch the agile vampire but he puts vicious wounds on the two officers. Both are still standing, but only barely. (Actually, I need to check something... I think you would only get an AoO against P2 as he moved while inside the area you threatened. The Pirate King and P1 did not. If you have reach, then yes, you get the AoO's but then you wouldn't be able to attack as you have not taken a step back. Let me know what I am missing, otherwise you only clobbered P2.)

Harvest Moon's attack does serious damage to the pirate in front of her and he falls, unconscious.

Hert moves into range and casts prayer, though he takes a few shots from a new friend as he does so. The Half-Orc connects doing 10 points of damage with his massive sword. Unwavering, Hert moves on and casts his spell. (It affects P2 and HO, as well as Harvest, Brom, and Hert. 40ft burst, that is all you can hit with it.)

Gerox is able to drop the recently appeared P2, smashing his face with magic missile.

Peza fires at the pirate king and it goes straight for his head, but at the last moment his catlike reflexes allow him to cant his head so the bolt just barely misses. (AC of 23).

Brom closes the distance to the Pirate King, but is ineffective at putting blade to enemy.

Hert runs past the two pirates, hoping that his allies will cover him. Much to his surprise, he receives a strong blow on his back, that pierces his armor and leaves a bleeding scratch on his back. Even more surprising it is to see Brom, outrunning him, and charging into combat with the Pirate King.

"No, you fool! You'll only get yourself-- NO!" - he shouts at Brom's back, as he watches the barbarian getting dominated and delivering the devastating strike to Barratore.

Hert gets pale, about as much as the Pirate King himself, but forces himself to act nevertheless. He touches his holy symbol, and the power of Gargul covers some of his allies healing their wounds. Suddenly he shouts, addressing to Brom:

"Hey you useless pile of meat! Get over and I will shove your big sword up your arse! Want to see how long you will last one-on-one?"
He stops, whispering prayers and hoping his plan would work. If Brom has any free will, he cannot resist such taunt... With Gargul's help, there is a chance to bring their main fighter back on their side.

He barely notices Gerox shouting, and visibly shakes his head. There is no chance they are getting out of here.

Suddenly, an idea flashes through his mind. He points a finger at the Pirate King, and shouts a chant, focusing and trying to make the spell hold.

OOC:
Hert moves to P10 and uses Channel Energy ability, healing Barratore, Brom and Harvest Moon for 9 damage. Then, spending 1 Hero Point he tries to cast Silence on the Pirate King.

Next round I would also like to use a Hero Point to get a Magic Circle against Evil(3 lvl) into Hert's available spells. PRD says its upon GM's discretion whether to allow that or not.

Brom, it has duration(5 rounds in my case). I always thought that it follows the caster, and affects whoever is in 40ft. range of the caster at the moment.

OoC: Here's a Hero Point use that we should consider before the next DM move.

Bonus: A hero point grants you a +2 bonus to any one d20 roll or +10% to any d100 roll -- you can apply the bonus retroactively after the roll is made. You can use a hero point to grant this bonus to another character, as long as you arte in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check). Hero points spent to aid another character grant a lesser bonus: +1 or +5% retroactively after the roll.

It would take 4 of us to contribute Hero Points to this use including Brom himself. (You can use more than one Hero Point per round.) This would get Brom up to 18 on his Will Save.

Harvest Moon will gladly contribute to this. We need three more.

Need two more to hit DC18. Actually, if you can use more than one per round for the same use, Harvest Moon can - and will if necessary - contribute the remaining two as well, burning three in the process. I can think of few better uses for them than this.

Harvest Moon focuses every bit of grit and determination with her being and, with quite a bit of help from Domi is able to come back from the brink of death, better, stronger than before. She makes a miraculous leap backward, almost as if she was going to fall overboard. The orc swings but can not hit his target. Think the day one, the Half-orc presses the attack, only to find the blade of Harvest Moon's Halbred slide through his armor and into his heart. The Half-orc falls lifeless to the deck.

Peza fires another bolt with less success this time. It clicks that the reason the Pirate King and possibly his officer's do not panic at the sound of the bolt is because one is a vampire, and the other is quite possibly his thrall.

The Mighty Barratore is able to finish both pirates he attacks in a matter of seconds. It seems he did strike the first one earlier with the attack of opportunity thought at the time it did not show it. (I see where I messed up. It has been corrected.)

Then the unthinkable happens. Brom heads the words of the vampires and slashes the Taur Warrior, dropping him to the deck, his lifeblood spilling out. Brom's BAS that has felled so many enemies has now cleaved the chest of one of his dearest friends open. -14 out of -16 for Barratore. Down and out, but not yet dead.

Gerox turns to fire at the officer but sees only the Dwarf and the Pirate King remain. He sends his magic screaming into the Dwarf, knocking him unconscious.

Hert, showing immense bravery, calls out to Brom telling him to face him man to man. Regardless, he heals Brom, Harvest, Barratore and himself for 9pts. The Cleric of Gargul is also able to silence the Pirate King...

--------------
The Pirate King attempts to say something then realizes what happens. He then taps Brom to get his attention and points in the direction of the Cleric, pantomiming that he wants the Barbarian to end Hert.

It seems obvious the Pirate King would deal with Hert himself were he not displaying that awful holy symbol. The Pirate King does however, move closer to Hert.

Brom knows that his directions are to attack Hert.

Currently the only two enemies are the Pirate King and Brom.

Harvest Moon shakes the body of the half-orc from the point of her polearm. Behind her come the unbelievable sounds of Brom as he attacks Barratore Steelwind. She turns half way to shout to the Rager to shake off the thrall of the vampire Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock. But, it is too late.

Without hesitation, Harvest Moon leaves the polearm behind and barrels across the deck toward Brom the Rager. Skidding to a stop just before the great and threatening BAS, she raises her arms and emits a short burst of light before locking arms with the Rager, wrestling for a hold that will keep him from doing harm to his self or to others.

"Hold him, Hert of Gargul!" calls Harvest Moon as she herself attempt to hold the Rager. "Hold him until the others can come to you!"

OoC: Two notes. First Barratore should also receive the 9hp of healing from Hert's Channel last round. This, combined with Harvest's channel this round should put him at -3.

Second, I think you get another Will save vs the Dominate, Brom.

Subjects resist this control, and any subject forced to take actions against its nature receives a new saving throw with a +2 bonus. Obviously self-destructive orders are not carried out. Once control is established, the range at which it can be exercised is unlimited, as long as you and the subject are on the same plane. You need not see the subject to control it.

DM Zach: Yes, Brom gets another Will Save, but only with the same +2 he had before for a total of... +6? 2 Base +2 Rage +2 from going against nature.

Al: Better than nothing, though.

why a spoon, why not a knife or a sword? the thought is his last conscious one as he brings his blade back and to the right to deflect Brom's attack, but he is too slow, too tired land too confused at the sudden rush of one who was supposed to be on his side. Brom's blade slides right through his lower chest, rending flesh and bone on its way through his lung. Barratore slides off and sideways, collapsing into a widening pool of his own blood. The Wold becomes hazy and without color, the sounds of the combat still happening on deck, becoming a muted thrum in the background and then blackness and nothing

OOC:
Err, what I meant is, is it possible for me to use a Hero Point to get a Magic Circle Against Evil now?

Rules for Using Hero Points:

HERO POINTS

Acquiring: Hero points are rewards the DM gives to a player when they perform an action that is heroic in nature. Each character begins play with one hero point at first level. Newly created characters entering a game after first level receive one hero point per level, up to three.

Maximum: A character can have a maximum number of hero points equal to their current level

Spending: You may spend hero points to affect certain die rolls. Using a hero point is a free action. Multiple hero points may be spent in one round. Once used, they are gone and are not regained except when new ones are earned. Hero points may be spent by the player in the following ways:

Bonus: A hero point grants you a +2 bonus to any one d20 roll or +10% to any d100 roll -- you can apply the bonus retroactively after the roll is made. You can use a hero point to grant this bonus to another character, as long as you arte in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check). Hero points spent to aid another character grant a lesser bonus: +1 or +5% retroactively after the roll.

Extra Action: You can spend a hero point on your turn to gain an additional standard or move action.

Inspiration: If you feel stuck at one point in the adventure, you can spend a hero point and petition the DM for a hint about what to do next. If the DM feels that there is no information to be gained, the hero point is not spent.

Reroll: You may spend a hero point to reroll any one d20 or d100 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.

COMBAT AND DEATH

When your character's current hit points drop to a negative amount equal to his Constitution score or lower, or if he succumbs to massive damage, he's dead. A character can also die from taking ability damage or suffering an ability drain that reduces his Constitution score to 0

A dying character loses 1 hit point every round. This continues until the character dies or becomes stable. A PC will survive an extra round for each hero point that he has unspent. Thus, a Character with 4 Hero Points and a 14 Constituion score dies at -18.

If it is not listed here... I do not think it is allowed.

Harvest Moon tries a rather unique way in dealing with a neck biter, by trying to grapple. Her method seems rather successful.

Edson is able to find an unlit torch. But finds it does him no good. He fires at the vampire and would have found his mark had he not been worried about striking Harvest as such his arrow flies wide.

Two characters are engaged in melee if they are enemies of each other and either threatens the other. Gerox hits the vampire for yet more damage. He encourages Hert to channel positive energy on the creature.

Flesh turns to mist. And yet ... there seems something of substance here. There is something here that is still the Vampire Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock. In fractions of seconds, the mind of Harvest Moon churns over the problem of whether or not she should continue to hold to the Vampire Pirate King. But what is clear to her, however, is that much of the hardness of the skin of Nathaniel Morelock the Vampire is now gone. He will be easier to strike!

Further, from her insight into vampires, gleened from the time she spent interogating the pirate, she understands that the Vampire Pirate King will lose many of his supernatural abilities while as a mist. This would include the need to have silver in order to slay him.

Strike him! If you have magic, strike him now! The mouth of Harvest Moon works, but the words make no sound within the magical Silence.

OoC: No move for Harvest Moon as of yet. But, according to the description of Gaseous Form, you lose all Supernatural Abilities while under the influence. That would, I believe, include the vampire's 10/Silver and Magic damage reduction. It would be left with tje 10/Magic damage reduction from Gaseeous Form. If you have a magic weapon, you can do full damage.

Also, under Gaseous Form the Vampire would lose most of it's AC. Won't be a better time to hit it than now.

The decision comes in a flash of insight. Better now to strike as one than to grasp at mists that may or may not slip through the fingers. Harvest Moon charges across the deck, striking for a spot opposite the misty vampire from Barratore Steelwind.

The murmur of the river. Birds in the forest trees. Sound returns as she exits the area of Hert of Gargul's Silence. "Strike him, Barratore Steelwind," cries Harvest Moon. "Strike the vampire hard!"

She turns herself and brings a fist around with all of the momentum of her turn, all of the weight of her small body, all of the magic at her disposal. She strikes for a spot that would produce stunning pain. If they do not bring the vampire down now, it will flee, and it will heal, and it will return then more dangerous than ever.

He touches his holy symbol, whispering another chant. Suddenly his holy symbol projects a ray of white light on the vampire, that soon takes a shape of a scythe. The scythe strikes the wispy shape of the vampire, leaving a long trail on the smoke.

Then Hert moves up to the vampire, not allowing him to create a distance between them.

OoC: Perhaps a little more information, please. Was this a Withdraw action on the Pirate King's behalf? That is to say, a move that does not allow for an AoO? If it is, it might be clearer for everyone involved if it was stated.

Also, can we all take the AoO's from last round if we haven't already?

And a third question: Can Barratore, Harvest, and Brom take an AoO for this round? Withdraw states that the square you start out in is not considered threatened by any opponent. But in order to rise straight up, the Vampire must also pass through and then leave the square immediately above it, which is also threatened by Barratore, Harvest and Brom.

The shining scythe follows the vampire and makes another long slice, leaving a trail of smoke as it touches his misty figure.

"That's the power of Gargul for you..." - whispers Hert proudly, watching his deity punishing the Pirate King. His holy symbol stops shining, indicating that the blessing is no longer upon them, and Hert gives some words of gratitude to his god for the help.

Then, he approaches Brom.

"You wanted to fly, didn't you? Well, here's your chance." - he says, patting the barbarian on his shoulder. He calls out to his god yet again, and Brom feels that he is losing contact with the ground and slowly lifting in the air.

But, as Nathaniel Morelock rises and presents the opportunity, Harvest Moon reaches and grasps. Running water will be the key. If she can hold it under the water, this may very well be the end for Nathaniel Morelock, the Vampire Pirate King.

Various things happen in the next few moments. Attacks are flungs, spells and barbarians fly, the ship is in utter chaos. This is expounded even more so by the fact that a rogue scorching ray smashes into the ship catching it on fire. The returns to his normal form and attempts to attack Harvest who ducks under the attack and tackles the Pirate King over the deck and into the deep running water. His flaming sword falls to the deck as this happens catching another portion of the ship on fire. The flames have begun to spread quickly.

Harvest and the Vampire are still underwater, but his many wounds coupled with his natural revulsion to water make him stop struggling altogether.

The group has to make a quick decisions, retrieve the Flag from the Mast of the Burning ship for the extra reward money, take a quick look in the below deck of the ship for any thing of value, or exit safely before the fire spreads anymore.

We are now out of round by round combat. If you remain on ship, list your actions but if what you want to do would take more than 3 rounds, you may start taking fire damage, or at least have to roll constitution checks to breath through the smoke.

Nathaniel Morelock is destroyed already? Suspicion still lurks within the mind of Harvest Moon. At first, she considers going through the pockets of the Vampire King while underwater. The key to the rooms could very well be within his pockets. In the end, however, she opts to continue to shore with the vampire for a more thorough examination.

With her arms still wrapped about the quiescent Pirate King, Harvest Moon kicks strongly with her legs. She feels the flow of the river currents and allows them to take her as she guides movement toward the shore. In her head she counts.

Eighteen. Eighteen is the recommended count to hold a vampire underwater. Or so says the lore. She will hold the Pirate King Nathaniel Morelock under the water for the count of eighteen. Only then will she drag the body ashore.

Harvest Moon swims to shore and begins pulling the now deceased Vampire Nathaniel Morelock ashore. He is very much dead. Of course, he was technically dead before so... yeah.

Barratore grabs the sword and tosses it safely onto shore... only for the residual flames of it to cause the booby trapped deck to catch on fire. The oil and pitch cause the flames to immediately spread to the ship. Not that it would have mattered, as fast as the ship was becoming engulfed, their would have been little way to save it.

Edson and Brom get to the flag at almost exactly the same time. The Barbarian flies it down safely with him. Edson is going to have to make a decent jump to make it to water deep enough to not be injured. It will be a DC 15 to jump from where you are on top of the mast into deep water safely. Miss and chance splatting on the boat. (I haven't worked out the exact heights or depths but I think that is what you are trying to do.)

Gerox is somewhat disappointed when in the captains quarters he finds little more than journals and ledgers. They do seem rather personal. Perhaps they will give insight into the history of Nathaniel Morelock? With his resistance he is able to withstand the heat, but the smoke is starting to get to him. To explore the ships holds completely will risk burning the books and being incapacitated by smoke. Not leaving immediately will cause Gerox to have to start holding his breath. Note that holding your breath in smoke is not the same as holding your breath underwater.

Coming back up on deck, Gerox notices magic items on the body of the First Mate. Two of them too be exact.

Hert tries to keep the ship from becoming fully engulfed, but with the booby trapped dock, he is fighting a losing battle that is steadily become more and more dangerous.

Anyone remaining on the ship after this point needs to start rolling constitution checks to hold their breath.

Water rolls down the body of Harvest Moon in its haste to rejoin the river. The single lock of mouse brown hair that normally arcs over her forehead now runs plastered down the center of her face, descends to one side of her nose, and ends at the corner of her mouth with just enough length for her to inconveniently eat her own hair. The loose sack of her clothing (these hand woven by herself from sea grasses) now hangs heavy and waterlogged about her thin body. Her sleeves, always too long at the best of times, now hang at her sides like the flippers of a seal or sea lion.

But if the wetting she's received presents even the slightest inconvenience it swiftly vanishes with the arrival of her friend. She can feel her elf-born eyes close to squints with the sheer breadth of her grin at Peza's praise. Harvest Moon pulls the Pirate King behind her and onto the shore where it loses buoyancy and becomes a weight dead enough to require Peza's help to take it further up the bank.

Even here, though, the heat from the flaming ship and docks is great. Fire can be a terrible thing. "Behind the building," shouts Harvest Moon over the roar of the flames. And she continues with the body to the far side, shielded from the heat by the pirate warehouse. Perhaps it is a good thing that the walls of this building were made from stone. At least their will be no worry of them catching fire too.

With a concerned eye, she looks up often from the body of Nathaniel Morelock, checking for the arrival of her fellow League Adventurers even as she searches the accoutrements of the Pirate King for items. Surely they would not remain aboard the ship while the fire rages. None but ... perhaps the Fire Gnome Gerox Shale.

@Shawn, please don't feel slighted. You posted that you were planning on grabbing the flaming sword and climbing up the mast. Carrying a flaming sword up the mast with rigging and sails didn't sound like the best plan and since another player specifically posted they were tossing it safely into the water "which, I misread and will address in a moment" I let them do so. Climb speed is slower than swim speed, which is why I posted that Brom beat you to the top. I wasn't trying to insult you and I didn't think anything of it. I apologize if you feel slighted my last hope was for you to feel underused or ineffective in combat.

@Dan K, you are right, I read your post to mean you tried to throw it to shore, but if it didn't reach it would at least be in the shallows, as opposed to I am for the shallow water. I'll adjust the post.

@Everyone, please note, I am not trying to rush you but... well I am. Your new DM's take over one Monday. I don't want them to have to tie up all the loose ends to this module. That is why I have been rushing. I plan on posting today, obviously, tomorrow, and at least one or two posts over the weekend to finalize everything. I want to at least get you back to the ship, though back to Rum and turning everything in would be preferable. I still have to award XP and identify your loot as well. Also, I really wanted to let you guys read some journal entries, but I may have to just go with giving you a summary of what was in them.

I am also sorry if anyone feels slighted or is not happy with the way this went/ended. I also apologize for my ineptitude in combat. I warned you guys before hand though, and was hoping to not have to run any combats, but RL came up and kept Ian from being able to run them as planned. Again, I apologize. Ok, the ship is still on fire, and burning to the ground, the deck however, has not yet ignited. If you want to keep it from doing so, you might want to get the unmoored ship, pushed, out into the river.

The flaming sword is about 5ft from the bank and Barratore is certain he can find it again.

Edson, makes it safely into the water and expertly swims to the shore a few feet away from the dock.

Harvest and Peza pull the vampire's body around so that it and they, will be shielded from the heat of the blaze.

Brom gives Harvest a barbarian like congratulation that she is certain will leave a mark for the next few days.

Gerox makes it off the ship with a large glaive, and a ring as well as 4 very important looking books and journals.

Hert jumps into the water and finds that his armor keeps him from coming up for air. He is able to hold his breath but can't quite get to the shore, or his head above water for that matter.

DC 10 Swim to get head above water, DC 15 to make it to shore.

If everyone is good, please detail how you plan to deal with the pirate, who for the sake of speeding things along, has a key to the other rooms, on him. They have a coffins for various crew members, who were obviously thralls, to sleep in as well as a room for the pirate king outfitted similarly. His also has a journal in it that matches the other books that Gerox saved.

The trip back to the coast will be uneventful and you can wait for the ship that brought you to return.

OOC my take on Barratore with the sword Edson was that you posted rushing by to scoop it on your way. I read that as if you missed you kept going. That being the case if you missed I intended to pick it up..

Barratore takes the books handed to him by Gerox and when the first mate is pointed out to have magic and possibly more, Barratore heads over with Gerox and will scoop up the dead taur and go overboard
[Swim take 10 = 18] and he will sidestroke himself and the body to shore. Barratore sees little to do about the ship. She was on fire and they did not have the manpower or magic to put her out. Ship of death anyway he thinks. Depositing the dead taur on shore, Barratore retrieves the Pirate King's flaming blade.

Barratore will settle in next to the pirate. This one is going to be going back to Rum.

Gerox is a bit disappointed that they don't find any hard cash in this pirate den. What kind of pirates were they anyway? He decides he will crack open the journal they found in the room on shore when they stop at night and start reading it.

Gerox tells the others about the magic items he found and wonders how they can evenly split the magic so things are fair. He expresses his opinions openly around the fire as they head back to the shore and says,"How do we want to split the loot. We will have to get things identified when we get back to Rum but we didn't get that much stuff. With the new rules on selling things to the Catacombs now in place, it makes sense to try and use this stuff if it suites us. We will have to find a way to be fair.

Also that last battle was a bit of a disaster. No battle plan ever survives after the first contact with the enemy but that was just crazy. Brom, why did you run up on deck without anyone else to support you anyway? We have to elect a leader or at least a battlemaster. Someone who can set the tactics of the battle and while still fighting can direct us to maximize our strengths and minimize our weaknesses. While I am not sure Peza is the best choice for leader, I think she can be our battle mistress. Her way of battle is to stay back and shoot her bow. This should give her a full view of the battle without blood spattering her in the face and obscuring her vision or having battlelust over come her. I think she would do a good job but it only works if we agree to follow her directions during battle. What say you?"

After Edson makes sure Hert is ok, he goes about helping the group with anything they need. He helps separate the loot, bury the dead, etc. etc.

When the Gnome speaks up Edson adds... "Well if there is anything someone can use to make us a better group, they should get it. Anything that is not of use might as well bring us something in the catacombs instead of taking up room in our bags. We should split the cost for them to be identified, and then split the reward on any sold. "

"As for a leader, or a battles master, I agree we need one. In fact I insist we have one before we are sent out on another mission. We had 3 different scenarios and no one was on the same page. We had Brom running for the ship, Harvest calling out changes in the plan, myself sneaking onto the ship and they all sunk any ideas of a plan we had. That almost lead to some serious consequences, I mean it looked like Brom and Barratore were about to meet there respective gods. We almsit lost two brave warriors because we went into this fight with no set plan of action, and acted as seven different people instead of one group. Gerox says Peza, and I like that choice because she fits all my criteria for a leader. If she doesn't want it, I choose Gerox because he uses magic and would know the best logic and placement for his own abilities. Either way I am fine. If neither of them don't want it, and someone else volunteers, That is good as well. But if we make it back to Rum and have no leader chosen, I am done. If I wanted to gamble with my life I'd still be part of the thieve's guild, atleast I'd make more money and only have to worry about my life and not worrying about digging a ditch for a friend. This last battle left a bad taste in my mouth and I am not ready to die at a young age. If we don't get our act together, and I am to blame as much as all of you, I am truly done."

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF17; CMD 21; HP 34/34) - Al
Friday May 17th, 2013 9:38:03 AM

Ah-ha! The small hand of Harvest Moon comes from the pockets of the slain Vampire Pirate King with an iron key. This, just before receiving a hearty thump upon her back from the Rager. Such ones as he strike each other in friendship quite often. Or so she is lead to understand. So, Harvest Moon returns the blow with a smile, and refrains from rubbing the ache from her shoulder.

More disturbing than the blow, however, is the Rager's assertion that she ... has crazy within her.

"Nathaniel Morelock the Pirate King is destroyed," she tell to both Peza and Gerox Shale. "There is no need to remove his head. To hold a vampire under running water as I did will ensure their destruction. But we must bring back the head along with the Pirate Flag in order to receive the full bounty," she adds, "so we my as well remove the head of Nathaniel Morelock from his body as well." What is more disturbing is the discovery of the locked rooms. The many coffins point to the presence of more vampires than they had expected. "I think that we should find each of the crew," suggests Harvest Moon, "and hold them under the running water too." Then she proceeds to do just that.

"I think that Peza will be a fine leader," adds Harvest Moon as she goes about her work. She has said this before, and this is the only thing she says now upon this subject. Within her, though, a disturbing question paces back and forth like an anxious wolf. Why should the League Adventurers need a battle leader? Will their lives be full of such strife that such a thing will be necessary? Will they now become soldiers? The thought is unsettling in a manner that Harvest Moon cannot clearly define to herself.

After each crew member has been found and held under the water, Harvest Moon inspects the captured items of which Gerox Shale says are magic. Each she tries on in turn, placing the headband upon her head and giggling as she squats at the river's edge and peers at her reflection. She holds the very large sword and smiles as it bursts into flames at her will. She takes up the polearm sized for the minotaur first mate Kress and swings it ponderously through a few arcs, laughing as the weight overbalances her and sends her to the ground with the weapon atop her. She tries too the ring, feeling, more than seeing, the translucent protection that is so much like her blessing of Domi. In the end, though, Harvest Moon says, "I will have the books, please."

Harvest Moon gathers up the books and journals, those taken from the Black Ship as well as the ones found in the room of the Pirate King. The journey back to Rum will take some time. It is at least a day's journey down the river to the sea. Then they must wait for Artus Morindim to return. Once per week, had said the halfling navigator. There will be a few days waiting. She will use the time to read these books.

OoC:

Accounting

Then numbers below are Full Price/Catacombs Selling Price. Ignore the dashes. They're there only to make the numbers line up in a nice column.

-4000/2000 +2 Headband of Alluring Charisma
18335/9167 +2 Flaming Bastard Sword
-8616/4308 +1 Large Kobold's-Bane Glaive
-2000/1000 +1 Ring of Protection
-2350/1175 +1 Great Sword taken from Grul the Half Orc

Total After Sold to Catacombs: 17650

Plus 5000 bounty = 22650

Split seven ways = 3235.71 each character.

Proposition

If you wish to have any of the items in the loot, you buy it from the party. You pay the party, the same amount of gold for the item that the party would get from selling it to the Catacombs.

So, for example, if Gerox wants the +2 Headband of Alluring Charisma, he gives up 2000 gp of his split and takes the headband. He gets a headband for half price and he has 1067.86 gp left.

He will, though, I'd think, still have to list the headband on his character sheet as 4000 gp towards his total character wealth. Which brings me to a different point.

Comparison

After all things loot are tallied up, Harvest Moon's total character wealth will come to only 9414.21. The wealth for a 5th level character should be 10500. So, not only is that below the wealth level for the current level, but we should be working toward the wealth for the next level. The wealth for a 6th level character should be 16000.

To tell you the truth, Harvest Moon is very close to leveling to 6. So, in this, she is quite seriously wealth deprived. I'm sure many of the other characters are in the same boat. (No pun intended.)

I've edited to take into account the +1 Greatsword that Brom has mentioned.

Gerox throws up his hands and stalks away in frustration.

Pirates are held underwater to make sure the spawn do not rise from the grave again.

The group remembers that the Bounty for bringing back the Pirate King's flag and his head are significant (You guys will receive an additional 5,000gp upon turning both items in, though you may wish to check with your incoming DM's and see if they want to increase that amount.)

While waiting for the ship, the ledger and journals are read. One is little more than a ledger of meticulous notes, detailing all of the ships the Pirate King has hit. There are easily more than 60 accounts logged in the ledger Each account has its own page detailing what happened and what was taken. This includes Captain and Ship names as well as what was on each ship. Even more disturbing is that, the Pirate King only seemed to take enough items to placate his crew. Much of it he seems to have dumped into the sea, almost as if he was more worried about causing pain and suffering than the actual monetary value.

The other three books are very insightful as well. The first, is a journal from Nathaniel Morelock's days in the Navy. It details his first voyage as an ensign all the way up to his assignment to his first ship as a Captain. It details his love of Anaes Sansen, and how they were to be wed when he returned from his tour of duty. The second Journal continues in much the same vein, but details the tragic news of Anaes' violent and tragic death. Nathaniel went mad and went against his superiors orders, taking his ship back home to find Anaes' killer. Nathaniel details the next several weeks of painstakingly tracking down the man who killed Anaes', only find that it was not a man, but a vampire. He turned Nathaniel, who fell into self-loathing. This is where the third journal picks up and their is a very distinct difference in the nature of the entries. They become more about revenge. Revenge against everyone, but especially the Navy. Finding that most naval travel was in transporting materials to Rum, that is where Nathaniel set off. The third journal details quite a bit of time because it is rarely written in, typically only detail when he turned someone, or when he got some kind of revenge. It seems Nathaniel Morelock was an unwilling Vampire that may have wanted to die and was fighting his basic instinct for survival.

After nearly three days of waiting, Artus and his ship can be see on the horizon. Two boats are rowed to you and take you back to the ship, with no further issues. The trip back to Rum is safe, quite and completely uneventful.

Barratore extends his hand back to Brom, but he has little to say on the subject. He liked the adrenaline rush of battle as much as the next warrior, but that was a debacle. Just about everything that could have gone poorly did and everyone was in the wrong spot including himself and that is what annoyed him the most.

None of the treasure interests Barratore nor does the conversation on a group leader and the minotaur distances himself from the others as it begins.

Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF17; CMD 21; HP 34/34) - Al
Sunday May 19th, 2013 9:23:58 AM

There is much knowledge within stories. There are many stories to be had within the body of knowledge. So go the thoughts of Harvest Moon as she closes the book on the last page of one of the journals of Nathaniel Morelock the vampire Pirate King. She has many books now. More, at least, than can be counted upon one hand. Not so many that she could not hold them in her arms. Nor, certainly, more than can be held within the secure compartments of her magic bag. There is not so much knowledge here that she cannot, now at least, hold the contents of these books within her mind. But what should happen if a mishap befalls her? The other League Adventurers speak of a Battle Leader as though they expect to be fighting often. What will happen to the accumulated knowledge should she ... be slain?

It is at this point that Harvest Moon makes her decision. It is at this point, mulling through thoughts of mortality so unusual for a fifteen year old girl. It is at this point that Harvest Moon begins formulating her plans. It is at this point she begins sketching within her mind the map of the things that she will need. It is at this point that Harvest Moon decides to build a library.

During the journey back to Rum, Gerox also takes the time to read the journals. He wonders at the Morelock's decent into darkness and how he was turned from the light. Gerox wonders at his own character, the decisions he has made and will make. Could he too, stray from the path? He knows he has darkness in his own heart and fears that his hot elemental blood might cause him to make decisions that will drive him from his comrades, family and friends.

Gerox shakes himself from these thoughts and returns the journals to Harvest Moon's rather neat sack. He asks her, "I know you revere the Gods. Whom do you favor and what convinced you to follow that path? This encounter with the Pirate King has frightened me. How easily a good man went mad. How easily evil was able to pervert him and drive him to turning others and killing innocents. Where were the Gods when this was happening?

(ooc Once we officially find out what the items are, Gerox will take the headband of Charisma if no one else wants it.)

Harvest Moon adjusts the top book, the book just returned by Gerox Shale. It is misaligned from the others. "I carry the symbol of Domi, Gerox Shale," she replies. "It is the symbol that was carried by a man who was very kindly to my mother and myself. He taught me many things."

"Domi is very brave and Domi is a very fine warrior. These are good things. Bravery. Fighting mettle. Those who follow Domi ... " Harvest Moon mulls the proper words. " ... find inspiration from his example. They do not look for him to fight battles for them. If he did, how would they prove their own bravery? How would they prove their own prowess?"

She lifts a sprig of mistletoe from the place in her belt where she always wears it. She observes the many small green leaves as she turns it within her fingers. "Evil ... is, I think, part of the Wold, Gerox Shale. The Wold has many things. It has light and dark. I has the Summer and it has the Winter. There are tall mountains and there are very vast seas. There is much life, and just as there is life there is much death. There are many many things, and they are always changing, moving, perhaps like the turning of a very big wheel. I think that there must be these things. They must exist for the Wold to be whole. I think that if there was no evil that, perhaps, we would not know good."

"Why do you fear becoming evil, Gerox Shale?" she asks. Though the gnome has not expressed his fear as such, it is plain to see the nature of his worry upon his face. "Will you still not be yourself? Will you still not be Gerox Shale even should you become evil? Is it because you wish no harm to those who are innocent? Harm comes to the innocent every day. Death, sadness, accident. They too are all part of the Wold. All things fight for life, they fight for happiness. Sometimes they are opposed in these endeavors. These things are only part of the Wold."

"You fear to become evil, but I do not think that you will. If you ask me why, I say it is because you do not wish to be evil. It is not usual, I think, that one becomes a thing that one does not wish to be. Oh yes. Such things happen. But I think that it is not usual. Some people may say, 'Oh, Gerox Shale, do not worry.' But I say, worry. If you worry about becoming evil, then you will be less likely to become what you do not wish to be. Yes?"

Gerox smiles at the half-elven young woman and says, "I don't really fear becoming evil, but my elemental blood is calling to me. As we grow in experience and power, my blood gains in strength as well. My abilities to throw fire and be unaffected by fire comes from my families ties to the elemental plane of fire from generations ago. For some reason it has manifested in me much more strongly than my kin."

Gerox pulls a half full wine skin out and tilts it shooting a stream of dark wine into his open mouth. He then offers is to Harvest and continues. "This blood is what powers all of my magic. It is who I am but fire isn't good or evil. It can be used to cook, to light our way in the darkness or cauterize a wound. It can also strip the flesh from a bone, destroy a home, a ship or a city. What most don't realize it fire is alive and it likes to burn. It consumes any fuel around to survive, just like you eat food to exist.

As my magic gets stronger, so do my desires. I have them in control for now but who can say what will happen in the future. Just like our pirate king, I can step over a line. Fire isn't good or evil but it likes to grow and eat. Doesn't it seam strange to you that I am a sailor? Fire doesn't like water to much. I figure I can do the least harm if I am at sea."

The rest of the time on the ship he spends by himself, keeping any conversations with his group to a minimum. He's not angry with the way the events happened, but just thinks with a leader and set and plan that they could be a formidable force. If a leader wasny chosen, part of him wanted to walk away, but another Part of him wanted to stay. He'd have to think on it, and thankfully the trip would

"I think," says Harvest Moon after listening to the fears of Gerox Shale in silence, "that you are likely very dangerous at sea. Should your power go mad as you fear, those who sail with you will then be trapped between the powers of fire and those of water. There will be nowhere to which they might flee."

Harvest Moon draws up her knees into her chest and wraps them with her arms as she stares into a mid-distant space, perhaps searching for wisdom. "Do you not think, Gerox Shale, that all things of great power are also very fearsome? Great storms of wind and lightning. The unyielding power of stone. Both our Brom the Rager too and Barratore Steelwind are very terrible in their wroth. Your magic, even now, is very fearsome. Why do we not flee from you now? Why is it that we do not flee from the anger of Brom the Rager, or from the great size of Barratore Steelwind? The answer is so simple that I think we do not bother to ask the question. We trust. We trust, but we also watch."

"I think that you must rely upon this, Gerox Shale. We trust you, but we also watch. You must rely upon us to do this. You must also trust yourself. But you must also watch yourself and rely upon, I think ... " And here, Harvest Moon once again searches for the proper word. " ... judgement. Gerox gets up and stretches and climbs up into the Rigging to the crows nest to be alone with his thoughts and watch Rum come into view. He marvels on how quickly it is growing. Once they dock, he will gather his belongings and head over to WLA headquarters to report in and collect their reward.
