Co-DM Rob - Voices in the dark Wednesday March 13th, 2013 8:11:12 AM
The party plead their case - that they were only trying to follow orders. The guard rolls his eyes and raises a hand to all the objections made.
"It's like dealing with a rowboat full of halflings" the guard mutters under his breath "Listen very carefully. Stay. On. Your. Ship. If Captain Kito wants to drag up the body of his old captain then let him worry about it tomorrw"
He leaves two guards by the gangplank and walks away shaking his head "Best go check on the other ship now too. Can't believe I swapped shifts for this. I could've been in the tavern right now .. " his voice trails off as he departs.
The party retreat to their quarters - some to dry off, others to get some sleep before sunrise in a few hours.
========================
As the first rays of sunlight shine through the porthole window, Yel'kno is awakened by a voice. It is coming from the ring given to him by Captain Annoir. It is being said in a very steady and monotonous tone: "Please. You have to help us. Latitude 49. Longitude 123. Cargo ship attacked. We're trapped. Please. Help us. Tell Molly Malone I love her"
The message then repeats, and repeats, and repeats, and ... you get the idea. 1min has passed since the ring first started 'talking'. It's as loud as a "normal" voice.
OOC: I assume you sleep in different cabins? Is this correct? What about watches on the ship - do the party take turns in these?

"Gods... I am trying to sleep" Yel'kno mutters before plopping th ring into a half full bottle of rum and pushing the cork back in. He then realizes that a magic ring was talking to him and dumps the bottle out to fish out the ring again, rushing off to show the others.
"That Annoir is just full of surprises."

"That's interesting. If you decide to leave the dock, you know where to find me.." He closes his eyes and goes right back to sleep.
Co-DM Rob - Voices in the dark Thursday March 14th, 2013 8:24:46 AM Yel'kno is quick to his feet and shows everyone what awoke him. A ring that for some reason refuses to be quiet!
Jozhur knows when and where he's needed, and right now he's needed in bed.
Coer asks the resident wizard for his views on what magic this may be. For his part, Coer is unable to discern any motive the ring may have. It doesn't appear to be sentient and is simply repeating the same message over and over again.
Spire finds it very easy to determine that the magic at play here is undoubtedly a Magic Mouth spell. Inside the ring he observes the trademark mouth moving in time with the words it speaks.
Seeing the gathering, Tula approaches looking well rested. She waits until the group finish speaking before making her own request "I'm told the guards left the docks shortly before sunrise. With your permission Captain, some of the crew wanted to have a look around the town since they were cooped up here all night. There are a number of chores that still need to be done here, but perhaps those that can be spared can enjoy some minor shore leave?"
Spirysn'rar Kilarn (Ian) AC 12/12/10 - CMD 14 - HP 13/13 Thursday March 14th, 2013 9:37:35 AM
Spire grimaces as he looks up from the ring. "The ring is legitimate, although I am unsure why Annoir gave it to us." He peers around the group as his rat scurries back down into a pocket of his robe. "With the crew so tired, they might not want to go on a wild goose chase for this man. Perhaps we could offer them an extended vacation afterward...?"

Co-DM Rob - The Captains gather Friday March 15th, 2013 8:30:54 AM Kerg and Yel'kno seem to agree on granting 2 hours leave to those sailors not required. Yel'kno also sends a request for Captain Annoir to join them aboard the LionFish hoping to get some explanations. Tula responds with an "Aye Sir" and leaves to see that the Captains orders are followed.
Between them, Spire and Coer pinpoint the location the ring speaks of on the charts. These coordinates would place the ship in question about 6 days sail to the east/south-east in the Middle Seas.
Jozhur doesn't see what value he can add, short of removing any offensive body odors that may be haunting him. He heads off to bathe.
After 10minutes the ring finally ceases repeating its message and falls silent. No more magic is detected on it.
A sailor returns with Captain Annoir in tow. Annoir stands by the gangplank and, as is the formality, asks for permission to come aboard before setting foot on another Captain's ship. Assuming it is given, he joins the group on deck. "That Captain of the Guard sure could drink" he says as greeting and reaches out his hand to shake that of Yel'kno. Though he has no doubt bathed, the strong smell of rum still seems to be escaping from the pores on his skin and dark bags are under his eyes. Annoir appears to have had a big night.

I wish I has bought that ballista when we were in Rum he thinks to himself.
Co-DM Rob - The Harbourmaster Calls Monday March 18th, 2013 8:27:27 AM "So many questions for so early in the morning" Annoir observes and carefully takes hold of the ring. It is completely silent and there is no further indication of any magic "You sure you didn't have anything to drink as well?" he asks with a chuckle.
"Well, where it came from? Who can say where and when a person comes across the things they do." the captain responds to the first question. "Can't say I've ever noticed it doing anything out of the norm though" He hands the ring back.
Coer laments not buying a ballista. To mount on the ship, or just to carry over his massive shoulder is unclear.
Jozhur spends some time in town trying to gather any info he can. Though he doesn't hear anything about "Molly Malone" he does discover news of one of the shipping routes between BoneTown and the Taur Isles. The route in question would be very near the coordinates given by the ring. The route is now rarely traveled due to ships going missing. Its been said something lurks within the sea and has decided to make this area its hunting grounds, among others places as well.
Two guards walk along the docks towards the ship "The Habourmaster wants to speak with Captain Yel'kno" one calls out. They stand ready to escort him to the Harbourmaster.

Kerg wants to ask why they should go after a ship that is already lost, putting themselves in danger in the process, when really they could just send word to this Molly that something bad may or may not have happened. Or they could even ignore the whole thing, since Annoir doesn't know if the ring is supposed to do what it did, or if it can be trusted. But everyone is already off doing what they need to in order to leave, and the captain has left to see the Harbourmaster. So Kerg just looks at Mohan and shrugs.

Co-DM Rob - The Harbourmaster Calls Tuesday March 19th, 2013 7:58:38 AM Yel'kno thanks Annoir for his 'help', before excusing himself for his meeting with the Harbourmaster.
Jozhur reports back with his findings, but speculates it could very well be pirates.
Spire tries to recall a creature from his learning that might fit the description of what might be attacking the ships. Unfortunately this third-hand information doesn't give him nearly enough detail.
Coer sets to rounding up crew and supplies.
Kerg on the other hand is a bit confused by the whole thing. The orc in him questions why the party should put themselves in danger. The human in him reminds him that making the shipping lanes safer for everyone is the 'good' thing to do. With a shrug he resigns himself to go along with the majority.
Yel'kno is led to a wooden shack on the border where the docks meet the town. A raised voice can be heard coming from inside. "You either talk or we send you back to the ship you came from. The Elf Bloods, wasn't it? Can't imagine you'll get a warm welcome there!"
One of the guards knocks firmly on the door and then waits for it to be opened. The door is pulled hastily open by a sturdy, balding man. His jaw is wide and his nose you'd rightfully guess has been broken more than once. Scars on his arms are intermingled with his tattoos. His vest is bright blue - the same blue as the armbands worn by his men. This would likely be the Harbormaster.
"Captain Yel'kno as requested sir" the guard reports in.
The Harbourmaster looks Yel'kno over and gives a very unimpressed sigh. The Harbourmaster folds his arms across his chest. "I'll cut to the point. You were killing people on my docks. I don't like it. It's bad for business. Kill them out at sea, in town, or in the hull of your boat. Take your pick. Kill people on my docks and we have a problem. Now, I've been told the Elf Bloods started the fight. That doesn't mean you get to kill them. The harbour fees have just gone up for the Lionfish. Next time we have a problem a share of whatever you bring in becomes property of the town"
Seated behind the Harbourmaster within the shack, and tied firmly and securely to a chair sits a half-elf. Ragged, recently beaten and filthy, this gaunt half-elf isn't much to look at. Coppery skin and unevenly chopped brown hair are all one can see, for his eyes are cast down, not daring to look directly at anyone.
Yel'kno notices that the Harbourmaster's hands are free from blood. Unless he washes very regularly (and well) he likely wasn't the one who beat the half-elf.

Wish I could tell you more but I honestly don't recall who I traded it for"

Yel'kno creates a diversion to allow himself more time to assess what is going on in the Harbourmaster's shack.
At the sound of the half-elfs whimper, the Harbourmaster returns his attention back to the prisoner "What, are you crying? Ha! Waard help you with the Elf Bloods then! I don't run a prison here or any kind of shelter." He pauses, perhaps realising the seriousness of the situation the half-elf is in. "If you don't have a home then you have to go back where you came from. That's the rule"

Spire and Coer try to recall any historical mention of the name 'Molly Malone'. Neither believe they have heard it before.
Spire tries once again to get more information from Annoir, who maintains he has no answers to the questions being directed at him. Coer tries to listen in to the conversation. It's not uncommon for treasure hunters to keep their favorite sites secret so that noone else plunders them. This may be the case with Annoir and the ring.

"Huh. If he's part of your crew then just like any other you'll be accountable him in the future" the Harbormaster responds, moving behind Keiki and untieing his bonds.
Keiki gathers his belongings and the two half-elves make their exit from the shack and return to the Lionfish. The Harbormaster watches from a distance.

He gathers the dirty sack and meekly follows the other to the Lionfish. He is not offering any information, but seems extremely quick to provide answers to questions.
Once on the Lionfish and given a bucket of water to wash in, the coppery-skinned half-elf will wash and change wherever the others have indicated (whether that is a private cabin or right out on deck), seemingly having no worries about modesty at all. He takes the time to clean off the backpack too, and tosses the rags he was wearing aside with repugnance and a touch of relief.
Cleaned and groomed and in decent clothes, the half-elf appears much different. All shades of warm, rich browns, the thin half-elf keeps his shoulder-length dark brown hair loose about his head, his coppery skin only highlighting the golden brown of expressive eyes as he stands in canvas and linen sailor clothes that don't quite fit.
There is a spark somewhere, perhaps the way he ties a tiny charm that looks like a cooking pot around his neck with a leather thong, the graceful way he slides around people on the deck... there is something that says this person is more than his outward current personality.

The half-elf is a quiet one, and flinches at sudden movements in his direction. The very act of being able to clean and groom and no one even attempting to grab the backpack to ruffle through it seems to bring at least a small change in the man. Some of the fear is gone, and some confidence is now there too.
"Yes, I am Keiki Ma'Kai, and I fear I am the last of my family who was a sea-faring people. I was apprenticed to Kahuna, our holy man, and learning the ways of our family's protective spirit. Many years ago, we were set upon by pirates. The fight went badly, and I woke as a slave. I have kept true to my family's ways and have grown in power. Yet I have been forced to use the spirit's powers for my captors, and kept under heavy lock unless sold to another."
"The Elf Bloods were only a long line of Masters, and I hid some of the power from them. Yesterday, they were distracted and I managed to escape, taking as many things as I could fit inside this pack. But I was weak and could not run far before the Harbour patrol seized me. And there you know my story."
Keiki shyly looks at each of the others, his golden brown eyes shining. "I heard from the Harbourmaster that you were the distraction for the Elf Bloods, and I am grateful. Until I can ever find the true fate of my family, I would be grateful to help you of the Lionfish in any way that I can." Keiki takes a splinter from the ship and stabs it into his finger, then smears the blood onto the planking. "I so vow."

Co-DM Rob - We now return to our regularly scheduled program Friday March 29th, 2013 8:27:42 AM
The party (or should I say crew?) get to know each other a little more. Certainly the addition of some healing magic to the party will prove very useful.
Tula advises that the only change from the crew was the departure of Gaston. Her happiness with this is obvious.
Under Yel'kno's[p/b] order, the Lionfish departs Bonetown. The skies and seas are clear - a good day for sailing. As the ship sets sail you look back and can see the newly crowned Captain Kito standing with arms crossed aboard the deck of the Elf Bloods ship. Soon though, Bonetown is behind you.
Someone must be looking out for the ship as the days that follow are uneventful. Peaceful even. The crew are in good spirits, and the sails of the Lionfish are full. [b]Spire is able to direct the ship towards the general direction he thinks they should be going.
Day 5 into the voyage a call comes down from Pinny, high atop the mast "Flotsam ho!" He's pointing ahead and to the starboard. Sure enough, small pieces of driftwood can be seen in the water and in the distance more sizeable portions look to be floating.
================================== OOC: Welcome back everyone from that unscheduled outage! 4 full days have passed, so I think we can assume everyone is fully healed and rested.
Now then, let's get some action happening :)
Keiki (SteveK) AC 14/14/10 CMD 16 HP 32/32 Friday March 29th, 2013 11:28:47 AM
Keiki stays underdeck until the Lionfish passes the harbor mouth, avoiding any problems with the Elf Bloods. As the days pass, the coppery-skinned half-elf slowly gets used to the heroes and crew. While flinching at loud noises or sudden movement, he becomes less reserved and it is evident that he will not freeze up in a fight.
Keiki also shows the others one of his abilities. That evening, the little cauldron about his neck grows at a single word from Keiki until it is small sized and cooking merrily on the ships firebox. It takes 25 gold of materials from the haversack and a spell cast, but in only a couple of hours, Keiki has a new Potion of Cure Light Wounds stored safely.
Keiki does this each day, and by the end of 4 days, has 4 Cure Light Wounds potions for later use. (ooc: pending DM approval)

Brew Potion. Witch = Sorcerer for price - Cure Light Wounds 50gp * 1/2 = 25gp brewing cost - Potions can take 2 hours to create (if their base price is 250 gp or less). - While adventuring, he can devote 4 hours each day to item creation, although he nets only 2 hours' worth of work. During the voyage, Keiki occupies himself with crafting some healing potions for the party.
At the sign of the floating debris, Yel'kno takes over control of the ship, whilst Kerg and Keiki move to the railings to get a better look. Jozhur moves to the bow. Coer fears that a rescue may well be too late and instead prepares for salvage.
The flotsam stretches out some distance, as if the ship was falling to pieces as it sailed. A few hundred yards away Kerg can make out the shapes of two people laying motionless atop a sizeable piece of wood. A man and a woman laying face down on the wood though they appear quite dry.
Spire tries to stay nearer the middle of the deck, wary about getting to close to the edge. Amidst the water lapping against the ship he starts to hear something. Perhaps he has been at sea too long, as it sounds like someone is knocking on a door? Spire soon realises that something is 'banging' against the hull of the ship below the waterline. It is too repetitive and deliberate in force to be debris knocking against the ship. One of the crew rushes deckside from below "Cap'n! Somethins hammerin' againt the hull!"
Keiki notices that there is indeed movement underneath the water around the ship. It could just be sea turtles, though by his luck it would probably be something much worse.

Spire begs for the sailor to pause - just for the moment - until a rescue would be safe. Spire speculates that whatever is in the water is likely the cause of the debris.
Coer believes the source of the disturbance to be octopi, and readies a grappling hook.
Standing by the bow, Jozhur prepares to fire his bow at whatever may appear at the surface. He has no idea whether the source of the knocking is friend or foe, but in these situations it appears wise to shoot first. He can see several shapes in the water the length of a man - merfolk perhaps? They seem to be congregating directly below the ship.

"Could the knocking be something putting a hole in the Lionfish? It would explain why the other ship looked like it broke apart while sailing..."
He screws up his newfound confidence and tries another suggestion. "Sir, my family was taken by a false ship in distress ruse. We can not see their faces right now..."
Keiki reaches for a Ley Line and casts a spell. Pointing his attention to below the waterline, he tries to Detect Thoughts and tell his new companions if the knocking is intelligent or animal.

He touches a Ley line and successfully casts his spell. Almost immediately he senses the presence of thoughts. (OOC: Detect thoughts says it is blocked by "3ft of wood or soil" but makes no mention of water. When in doubt I go the players way, so I rule the spell is able to function/penetrate the water)
Kerg sees reason in holding on for the time being. He secures one end of the rope to the ship though in anticipation.
Yel'kno calls for someone to get ready to "heal" the ship (though most people might simply call it "repairing"). One can only imagine his response when Spire informs the Captain that Sten held that responsibility.
Spire then gets closer to the edge of the ship, and calls out over the railing trying to seek peace. He tries every language he knows. But whatever is down there either cannot hear, doesn't understand, or has chosen to ignore the wizard, as the pounding continues.
Jozhur offers to go for a dip and speak to the creature (or creatures) directly. Is he being brave or foolhardy?
Coer gets ready to throw the grappling hook towards the makeshift raft, but at this range he elects to wait until he is confident of the range
The banging below continues...
Reminder for everyone to update your HP to be fully healed
=========================== OOC: - 2 DM posts ago put the raft at about 200 yards away, so 600ft - The Lionfish has a speed of 4mph, which works out to 21120ft/hr, or 35ft per move action (70ft in a full round) - Throwing a grappling hook requires a ranged attack roll, treating the hook as a thrown weapon with a range increment of 10 feet. Objects with ample places to catch the hook are AC 5.
So... After two rounds (and assuming double moves by the Lionfish), the raft is now 460ft away The penalty on a grappling hook attempt at this range would be about -90. Given that, I suspect Coer would rather hold onto the hook for the time being. Your call though :)

How will the Captain react with one of his crew in the water? Will the ship continue sailing on? Will he risk slowing or stopping the ship for the life of one man?
=================== OOC: Note1: We're going round-by-round at the moment you can only cast 1 spell at a time. Since Jozhur already has +4 armor I'm assuming you would have preferred the light spell this round
Note2: On diving into water: "Characters who deliberately dive into water take no damage on a successful DC 15 Swim check or DC 15 Acrobatics check, so long as the water is at least 10 feet deep for every 30 feet fallen". Also: "Falls into water are handled somewhat differently. If the water is at least 10 feet deep, the first 20 feet of falling do no damage" I'd guess the height of the deck above the waterline to be less than 20ft - I think. So no damage to Jozhur.

Keiki's brown eyes widen as first the minotaur and then the half-orc jump into the water where they KNOW there are creatures. The half-elf doesn't understand. All he knows is they have so far behaved VERY differently from any slaver he has ever remembered. Keiki resolves to keep watching and doing what he can to help.
Keiki stays at the railing and keeps his concentration on the water, hoping to catch some surface thoughts of these intelligent beings, relaying anything he learns to the heroes of the Lionfish.

Cast Detect Thoughts :round 3
1st Round: Presence or absence of thoughts (from conscious creatures with Intelligence scores of 1 or higher).
2nd Round: Number of thinking minds and the Intelligence score of each. If the highest Intelligence is 26 or higher (and at least 10 points higher than your own Intelligence score), you are stunned for 1 round and the spell ends. This spell does not let you determine the location of the thinking minds if you can't see the creatures whose thoughts you are detecting.
3rd Round: Surface thoughts of any mind in the area. A target's Will save prevents you from reading its thoughts, and you must cast detect thoughts again to have another chance. Creatures of animal intelligence (Int 1 or 2) have simple, instinctual thoughts.

The Lionfish lurches to the port side as Yel'kno quickly spins the wheel to take the ship into a quick turn.
"Cap'n!" comes the call from a sailor just about knocked off his feet on the stairs "There's water startin' to come in down below! We're workin' to patch it quick smart"
Keiki stays at the railing, concentrating on the beings below the surface. He now detects the presence of Jozhur in his range. He is able to hear the surface thoughts of one creature: "Now you've made me mad. Die land walker!". It would seem unlikely to be Jozhur's thoughts. (Will saves 21 & 15. I believe the DC they had to beat was 18?)
Coer provides some light below the surface to help those in the water see what is going on - though they may not like what they see.
Jozhur feints, then slashes back at the sea creature cutting it deeply. It bares its teeth and retaliates with force, targetting Jozhur's sword (Attempt to disarm Jozhur. CMB check: 24 beats Jozhur's CMD of 16. Jozhur is allowed to make an AoO though!) Should the creature survive the AoO, Jozhur will watch as his short-sword sinks out of reach.
The other creature releases its hold of its trident and tries to tear into Jozhur with its teeth and claws (Bite hits AC24 - Nat 20. 5 fails to confirm crit. Claw1 hits AC20. Jozhur takes 7 damage!).
With its other claw it manages to cut the rope that had been securing Jozhur to the ship! (Attack the rope. Hit AC14 for 2pts damage. The rope is cut!)
Kerg dives with grace into the mix. He sees Jozhur nearby is under attack but before he can go to the rescue he has some problems of his own. 2 enemies (E3 & E4) move to flank and attack the latest target, however only one seems to be coordinated with a trident (Miss AC8 and Hit AC23. Kerg takes 4pts damage!)
(OOC: Kerg please advise what square you wish to start in. Note that with the ship moving, Jozhur would have been trailing by the rope. Regardless, two enemies - E3 & E4 - would be moving to flank you this round.)
The other two remain attacking the hull of the ship.

Jozhur strikes again as the as the creature lunges for his weapon. He gets lucky and catches an artery, turning the water around the Merfolk red. Somehow the Merfolk is still able to twist his sword out of his hand as he withdraws it.
Jozhur wastes only a split second watching his precious sword sink into the depths before drawing his dagger and feinting once again. He follows up a beautiful feint with an even more beautiful attack, plunging his dagger deep into the same Merfolk's chest.

He glances at the two bodies on the makeshift raft. If they are part of the ambush, then they should show some life now that the trap is sprung. What are they doing?

[SteveK ooc:] A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed. 1 Round Casting Spell Jon is right that the dolphin won't appear until the beginning of next round.

As Coer suddenly begins to expand he reaches into his backpack and pulls out a small, brightly coloured object that could only be described as a stick with a ring attached to the end.
Hold on men Coer calls to Jozhur and Kerg, as he raises device to his lips and blows gently. A shimmering bubble forms and moves to envelop Coer's head. As the bubble settles the colour drains from the device, its magic expended.
~~~ Ooc 1: [b]Pending DM approval:[b] I am using a lotto item as seen on Coer's sheet -- a bubble wand: It may be used once to form an Air Bubble (CL3) around a creature or object, then it becomes mundane. "Air bubble creates a small pocket of breathable air that surrounds the touched creature's head or the touched object. The air bubble allows the creature touched to breathe underwater." If not allowed Coer will jump in and fight
Effects: Enlarge person: Coer is HUGE! 15" reach and size. +2 size bonus to Strength, a -2 size penalty to Dexterity (to a minimum of 1), and a -1 penalty on attack rolls and AC due to its increased size. Temp AC: AC 15/14/13
Question to DM: Enlarge person makes weapons move from normal to large, increasing damage 1 step. As Coer's are already large, do they become huge increasing thier damage 1 step as well?
Jozhur loses grip of his weapon but notes that it sinks rather slowly. If the battle is over soon he should have no difficulty in retrieving it (See Note1 below)
Taking things personal now that he is armed with only a knife, Jozhur uses one hand to grab the creature by the neck whilst using his other to thrust his knife deep into its chest. With a quick twist, the knife is free and the unmoving creature slowly starts to sink.
Keiki has a closer look at the beings on the raft. Their hands and feet do not appear "fishy", and for all intents and purposes they appear to be human. They are still yet to move.
Knowing that a ship doesn't stay afloat for long when it takes on water, the witch makes his way below deck to assess the situation. Tula is directing a small band of sailors as they patch a hole. You wouldn't describe the situation as perilous yet. The water is coming in at a steady rate - similar to water being poured from a jug - but the sailors seem to have things in hand for now. Perhaps when the threat outside is dealt with you could get a clearer view of the hull from the other side?
Coer takes an object from his pack and activates his, surrounding his head with fresh breathable air.
Spire then gives the taur a boost - enlarging the already large Coer to huge size (Yep - this also enlarges Coer's weapons to size huge!). The Lionfish tilts ever so slightly to port now under the taur's weight.
Yel'kno passes the wheel to a nearby crewman as he begins the ritual to summon some aid (or more fodder).
The enemy respond...
Perhaps distracted by seeing his brethren gutted, #2 flails about with tooth and claw but is unable to land a strike on Jozhur (Miss AC5, AC16, AC10)
The two surrounding Kerg try a similar tactic. Both release their tridents and try to tear the half-orc apart (Forgot to add flanking bonus to rolls. Missed AC11, AC13, AC8, AC13. Hit AC14 and AC25. Kerg takes 13pts damage!)
Seeing the battle isn't exactly going the way they had planned, the remaining two enemies give up their assault on the Lionfish to instead target the foes in the water. One of them manages to graze Kerg's thigh with a trident (Miss AC12. Hit AC16. Kerg takes 6pts damage!)
- Assume all enemies, Jozhur & Kerg are 10ft under water. The bow is to the top of the map. - Rules for underwater combat: Underwater Combat - Note #1: I thought it was a bit harsh to start putting disarm attempts in, particularly in underwater combat. Imagine at higher levels losing +5 swords just because you failed one disarm check! My original plan was to get permission for everyone to be able to use weapon cords (an APG item) however Jerry had another suggestion that I like: when you are disarmed in/under water your weapon will sink at a rate of 5ft per round. If there is an opponent near you, picking your weapon up it will provoke an AoO just as if you were picking it up from land. Sinking at 5ft per round means that if combat is over quickly you should be able to safely recover any disarmed weapons, or at least be able to retrieve it before it is lost forever.
The mighty Coer hits the water with a large splash. He brings his sword down upon the nearest foe - the blade slicing into its shoulder.
Keiki returns back to the deck of the Lionfish, and quickly transforms himself into a Merman. His lower body now appears to be similar to that of a fish, differing from the webbed limbs of the enemies in the water.
Jozhur moves about comfortably in the water, but finds the water affects his vision as his strike misses its target
Yel'kno's dolphin swims in to flank its target, slamming the enemy from behind. The creature seems to vomit blood from some internal damage.
Spire considers sending a magic missile into the water but then thinks better of it (See Note1 below)
E2 and E4 each take steps to surround Jozhur (See Note2 below)
E6 also positions himself to flank Kerg.
In merman (mermaid?) form, Keiki dives quickly into the water to be diagonally below Kerg's. The witch's touch closes a number of the wounds the Kerg had sustained so far in this battle.
Yel'kno summons another dolphin to the scene. Though the first one makes an inneffective strike, the second pulverises one of the enemy swimmers (E2 was already killed so instead I moved you dolphin to finish off E3. Hope that's ok)
Coer's rage grows as he sees what the creatures are doing to his shipmate. With heroic precision he severs the head of the enemy nearest him. (Nice reference by the way!)
Yel'kno and Keiki concur on the nature of the creature: a sahuagin. Keiki stabilizes the captive to make sure it doesn't die on the deck. Well, for the time being at least.
Coer secures it securely with rope before it awakens. He gives the rope an extra tug just to make sure it is secure.
Keiki recognizes the signs of exposure on the two humans, and in a gentle fashion does what he can to treat them with small morsels of food and water. Too much too quickly could be a shock to their systems. He tries his domain gift, but finds it has no effect. These two are not dying - simply fading in and out of unconscious. Keiki's experience in this field tells him that getting these two out of the suns rays may also be helpful.
Spire looks on with interest, trying to garner what knowledge he can from the people simply by their appearance (one can only wonder if he also judges books by their covers). There are no signs of scars or tattoos on either person, so it would be unlikely they came from Bonetown. In fact, it would be unlikely they were sailors at all based on their attire. Their clothing would be considered commonplace in Aisildur or Fargunia. Had they not been found at sea, and had their clothing been in better condition that may have fitted in quite well in a marketplace somewhere. Yes, it is possible these people have come from the east.
It is at this point that the sahaugin opens its eyes. It hisses and struggles in its bonds, but Coer has tied them quite tightly. It speaks in a language foreign to many. If you know Aquan... Highlight to display spoiler: { Release me! }. It continues to struggle.
Keiki (SteveK) AC 14/14/10 CMD 16 HP 32/32 Friday April 19th, 2013 9:48:05 AM
Keiki, his lost family having been nomadic seafarers, knows the language the Sahaugin speaks. And thanks to Yel'kno's knowledge, understands a great deal more. "He is demanding that we release him", he tells the Captain. In Aquan, repeated in Common for any of the Lionfish crew or heroes who do not, he replies to the fish-man. "Your kind know the Common tongue, so you may as well speak it, pirate."
Then the half-elf turns his attention to the couple on the deck, politely asking a couple sailors to bring them below decks and away from the sun. Keiki stays with the injured people, gently nursing them to their health.
Coer believes the creature to be speaking plainly and what it believes to be the truth. (@Coer: Intimidate checks last for at least 10mins, so we can just use your original roll of 24 for the next few posts if you like?)
Spire has heard many tales of the sahaugin. They are quite territorial and rarely ally themselves with others. If their 'turf' is being invaded they would likely be too proud to leave it or have anyone who would help them. What's more, anything that can take food from a sahaugin would be something not easily dealt with. One other thing comes to Spire's mind. He recalls hearing tales of these creatures having the ability to communicate with sharks over quite some distance. Having one aboard the ship could be trouble waiting to happen.
Meanwhile below deck, Jozhur tries to make some friends. The man has placed his arm around the woman and she leans in to him. "I am Claudien. This is my partner Adela" he answers Jozhur quietly "Those creatures were circling us for what seemed forever. If you have one aboard I would feel much safer it was killed" The woman shudders.
They're nothing to worry about...unless they come back in greater numbers." Jozhur pauses to worry for a moment that there is indeed a lot more of those things in the area, but tries not to show the concern on his face.
"So, where were you two headed? I imagine we're heading back to Bonetown unless you direct us elsewhere. We were responding to some sort of distress signal in this area being transmitted through a magical ring, would you know anything about that?"
Co-DM Rob - Fish for dinner plus two unexpected guests d20+5=17 ; Thursday April 25th, 2013 8:36:38 AM Keiki starts to feel a sense of confidence he had long since forgotten. Perhaps even a sense of self-pride? Many a time he would have wished himself away from being aboard a ship, and now, well, could this be the place he was destined for? He keeps his eyes peeled for any other sahaugin, but notices nothing out of the norm in the water.
Yel'kno and Coer continue the interrogation. The sahaugin drops its head momentarily before answering the questions "It ssshamesss usss. The invadersss. Half-horssse and half-fisssh. We often eat them -" it licks its lips "- but not thessse. They are driven. Organisssed."
Spire has a word in the Captain's ear, recommending that the prisoner spend as little time aboard the Lionfish as possible.
Co-DM Rob - Fish for dinner plus two unexpected guests Friday April 26th, 2013 9:07:50 AM Keiki moves to the bow of the ship, and to the casual onlooker he appears to be babbling something. King of the World?
Yel'kno and Spire look to each other with knowing faces. It would sound as if the creature being described by the sahuagin is a hippocampus, though they have a reputation of being extremely passive and would seem unlikely to attack vessels. If it wasn't for Coer's intimidating stance, it would be easy to think the sahaugin was lying.
It responds to Yel'kno's request with a sound of hope in its voice"I ssswear! Jussst fisssh. No ssshipsss! I cannot ssswear the sssame for my brothersss, but you will not sssee me again. I ssswear!" It looks at the Captain through squinted eyes, before longingly glancing to the sea.
When my strength returns I would be happy to perform whatever chores need to be done on this ship to repay your kindness. I may not know my way around a ship, but I can handle a mop"
Jozhur excuses himself and gives the two survivors time to rest and regain their senses. His gut tells him there is more to their story, though they don't seem to want to share it. Perhaps when they have had a safe nights rest and their bellies are full they may feel more trusting.
(Geography: 28) "Perhaps the original owners of the rings are already dead. They did seem to be the only survivors."
Co-DM Rob - Catch and Release Monday April 29th, 2013 7:46:56 AM Coer draws his sword and raises it high in the air, much to the shock of the Captain (and DM!). Coer surprises both by cutting the ropes binding the sahaugin. The creature slowly starts backing towards the side of the ship, before hurriedly diving into the water without another word. Several moments pass and no sign of it appears on the surface.
Keiki, Coer and Spire then consult the charts. They are confident that are in the vicinity - give or take - that the ring specified. Perhaps they were too late? There is enough wreckage in the water to suggest a ship recently sunk. There are no islands within 3 days sail of the current location. The nearest being some located between the Centaur and Linotaur isles.
Jozhur finds Joansie in the ships galley - the woman having taken on the role of ships cook since Squint's demise (that and perhaps Tula saw fit to punish Joansie for siding with Renchild). She had already been preparing for the evening meal and scoops a helping of some sort of stew into a bowl alongside a sizeable piece of crusty bread. It all smells edible enough, and Claudien seems very appreciative of Jozhur's efforts.
Tula reports in to Yel'kno that Cato has Horace hard at work ensuring the hull is repaired correctly, and that Pinny is almost at the end of his shift in the crows nest. Dinner isn't too far away but there is still plenty of daylight left before nightfall. Does the Captain wish to send someone else to the crows nest? What about watches during the night? Yet, from the story, it sounds as if everything is backwards here!
Keiki tries to piece together a puzzle but the picture they form does not make sense yet.
Coer takes first watch and makes light work climbing the rigging. Spire joins him on first watch, pacing the deck and making sure all remains quiet. The pair notice a lack of fish in the water, and at one point Coer spots what may be a sahuagin keeping an eye on the ship from quite a way away. It makes no attempt to get close to the ship - perhaps having seen how easily the party took care of its kin earlier.
Jozhur and Keiki look to take the middle watch, leaving the Captain to rise early with the rest of the crew. Keiki finds the rigging easy to climb, and the fresh air atop the ships mast is envigorating. Jozhur walks the deck of the Lionfish. The familiar rocking of the ship and the sound of the water lapping by the hull is enough to put most sailors to sleep. Jozhur catches the sound of some aruging below deck. It sounds like Tommy and Too-Elt and it certainly isn't quiet. The noise is enough to prematurely waken Yel'kno.
He targets one of the nearby creatures and though he feels the power of the ley lines, the creature does not seem to be obeying his command (The thunderstone writeup doesn't say anything about you knowing which targets were affected or not so I intentionally kept that from you. Unfortunately E4 was one the two. Being deaf it wasn't affected by Lesser Geas as it only affects creatures if they are "able to understand you")
Coer momentarily considers the origin of these creatures, but decides that is something for the intellectuals to worry about later. For the mean time it's probably best to try and collect some more samples for them. Sword and fist work nicely together as he draws more blue goop before stepping back to admire his work.
Yel'kno casts a spell that goes off like a fairy's sneeze - everything is covered in glitter! Claudien, Adela, Jozhur and Too-Elt all sparkle brightly. Claudien and Adela appear to have stopped, or at least slowed down their attack on the hull. They are certainly being much more careful with their knives. Too-Elt is turning his head left and right and swinging his knife dangerously in front of him.
Spire arrives on scene and quickly and greases the two newcomers. Adela falls prone to the ground, her knife dropping from her hand, but Claudien remains standing.
Jozhur sparkles like a twilight vampire but can see perfectly well. He stands his ground in defiance of his Captain ( Jozhur Highlight to display spoiler: {You are free to move how you like but no further away from Claudien that you are now and always to protect him from what you perceive as a danger, ie: you can move closer to him if you wish. Should he move then you will follow. Up to you who Jozhur would consider the bigger threat to Claudien - Yel'kno or Spire})
Tula and Pinny come down the stairs behind Yel'kno. Tula has her sword drawn whilst Pinny stands unarmed behind her. "Cap'n?" Tula asks as she takes a defensive position next to Yel'kno. Pinny stands behind Tula.
The enemy act...
Adela stands up, regaining her footing (Provokes an AoO from Spire!). She swings her right fist out to the side without looking to see where she is striking. Remarkably - she manages to make contact with Spire! For a small woman she has a surprising amount of force behind her punches (Roll for miss chance: 99 = Pass. Hit AC12. Spire takes 8pts damage!)
Claudien growls and turns, putting his back to Adela. He stabs his knife at the air in front of him. His once calm and welcoming face is now a picture of rage and hate.
Above deck...
E3 and E4 move to attack Coer (Provokes an AoO from Coer! Unlesss you have Combat Reflexes in which case you get more than one...) They appear to have practised this maneuver before as both manage to find gaps in the monk's defences but their knives fail to pierce the magical armor. (E3 Hit AC21 BUT forgot -2 for being deaf so MISS. E4 Hit AC21 BUT forgot -2 for being deaf so also MISS)
Now that the others have joined in the assault, E5 and E6 each step closer to the monk and unleash their attacks. E5 may be feeling the effects of blood-loss as his attacks miss, but E6 seems to have become empowered by the fight (E5 miss AC14 & AC10. E6 hit AC25 - 15 fails to confirm crit - for 5. E6 hit AC26 - 24 confirms crit - for 8. Coer takes 13pts damage!)
Behind the enemy Coer and Keiki see Cato and Horace come on deck. Each has a sword drawn, but how the old man and the goblin would fare against one of the "people" facing Coer is unknown.
As you are staggered you can only take 1 action each round, but withdrawing can be one of them :)
The eager foes rush towards Coer either misjudging his reach or combat prowess. His training takes over and he strikes at the goo filled creatures. He jabs his fist at E3, while stabbing his sword at the other. The beasts dodge the blows, perhaps they understand their prey all too well. ~~ The furious stabs by the creatures continue in the cramped quarters. Coer's magic and toughened hide deflecting all but the most vicious. Coer shrugs off the pain determined to repel the invaders and defend theLionfish and its crew -- his home and family.
His eyes flash blue once more and he roars as Keiki floats down behind the bluebloods. He continues his assault, taking a swing at each foe in a show of force. He punches E5 in the face, electricity arcing off his knuckles as he makes contact, he brings his sword down on E6, blue goo spraying from the devestating hit, E3 recieves an overhead chop to the shoulder, and the crackle of electricty is heard once again. Pinny moves to stand by the captain.
Keiki floats gracefully down to the deck with a net in his hand. He looks to Cato and Horace to back him up with his plan to flank the enemy in front of them. The three of them move in cautiously.
Coer draws a substantial amount of "blood" from the "humans" - E5 and E6 wobble on their feet. E5 looks to be struggling to breathe, whilst E6 is nursing a huge gash in his stomach.
The enemy act...
Adela is blindly feeling around at the air in front of her.
Claudien though blinks and moves to engage Tula. He stabs at her with his knife but finds it easily parried away by her sword (Hit AC7 - Nat1 = Miss)
E5 and E6 can barely stand on their feet having taken so much damage from Coer. E5 scampers backwards over the railing whilst E6 does a less elegant retreat simply falling over the railing (Both E5 and E6 use the withdraw action to get over the side of the ship and swim straight down)
E3 and E4 though seem less interested in retreat and more interested in skinning this taur. Each steps a little closer to Coer, flanking him now. Pinny stays well away from the fight, unarmed and not wanting to come between the captain and officer.
Spire too backs carefully away from the fight. His head still rings from Jozhur's blow.
Keiki nets one of the foes and pulls the rope tightly.
Coer's training taught him how to fight many foes at once - something he has proven more than capable of doing. He seems to have trouble focusing his might on just one target as the human ducks and weaves quickly.
Cato steps closer, taking Keiki's advice about only fighting defensively. Horace meanwhile holds his ground.
The enemy act...
Adela shakes her head and looks about (Will save vs DC17: 18 = Pass!) Snarling she moves towards Yel'kno, trying to punch the Captain. Yel'kno easily dodges the blow however (Attack hit AC10 = Miss)
E4 finds himself stuck in a net; the ropes of which seem far too strong for him to break. Deaf and ensnared, he tries to make his escape. He tries to throw himself overboard, but Keiki holds the rope tightly. Keiki feels the rope go taught and it takes all of his strength not to let go (Strength check to beat Keiki DC14: 9 = Fail. Note DM Roll should have been +3 not -3. The weight of the "human" is around 170lbs. Best I could find on this situation would be: A character can lift as much as double his maximum load off the ground, but he or she can only stagger around with it. While overloaded in this way, the character loses any Dexterity bonus to AC and can move only 5 feet per round (as a full-round action)).
Horace drops his sword and tries to help Keiki take the weight on the rope, but the strength of the goblin seems negligible.
Keiki (SteveK) AC 14/14/10 CMD 16 HP 32/32 d100=37 ; Wednesday May 8th, 2013 12:45:45 PM
What a precarious situation! Keiki finds himself holding on with all his strength to just keep his net and the foe. Coer and Cato are still dealing with the other boarder, and it is only the half-elf, the goblin and the ship...
"Horace, sir", Keiki manages to gasp between his teeth, "would you be able to tie off the end here to a cleat or belaying pin or something? Might be better than the two of us going over the side!"
Now that the enemy is hanging over the side, Keiki sits down and uses his feet to brace against the deck rail to keep the net above the water until it can be tied off.
Freeing a single hand, Keiki makes some magical movements, enhancing his strength and making it more likely they will have a prisoner.
........
Sit and brace; maybe a +2 circumstance bonus? :-) Cast Bulls Strength: 37% Ley success; +4 STR for Keiki
ooc: to get out of a net, it is usually opposed STR checks or STR vs Escape Artist. But since he is now dangling over the side of the ship, I'm assuming it is a straight STR from Keiki since E4 has no leverage?
DM RobC: Correct. The creature tried to dive for freedom (planning to untangle itself underwater) assuming an "average joe" was holding the rope - not a hero such as Keiki :) Since it's dangling it has no leverage to pull the net away from you, but could still potentially burst/break the net.
Spire regains his feet and makes his way downstairs agian. He finds the effort considerable and is unable to draw upon his power to aid in the attack (While staggered you can only take a single move or standard action each turn - not both. Unless you want to use a hero point of course)
Coer admires Spire's conviction and follows him downstairs.
They arrive in time to witness Jozhur taking a swipe at the Captain and removing the last illusory image of Yel'kno. To the port side they can see the pile of three unconscious sailors: Too-Elt, Tommy and Tula. Truly a puzzling sight for the two.
Yel'kno backs away from the combat and tries to rally the sailors to his aid (Based on your current position of K17 you can only 5' step to K16, not K15)
Claudien and Adela do not relent on their assault on Yel'kno. Each moves closer to flank him again as they attack. (Adela 5ft step to L16 and Claudien 5ft step to J16). The man stops struggling, but his chest continues to rise and fall.
Jozhur steps up to the Captain and delivers a solid blow with a sap. (Yel'kno takes 4 non-lethal damage!)
Yel'kno backs away from the crowd to take the legs out from under Claudien. The human tries to hit the Captain as he performs the move, but over-compensates, falling to the floor (Trip provokes an AoO. Claudien misses with a hit on AC13)
Coer steps up and brings his sword down with great might upon the prone man.
Spire draws upon his strength firing a ray at Adela, burning her hair - and no doubt feeling a sense of retribution for the damage her fist did to his face (I'm not sure why you think you are at negative HP. You should still be Staggered and at 0HP, shouldn't you? You don't have any bleed damage. Consider the Ray attack this rounds action and keep your hero point :) )
Claudien regains his footing and stabs at Yel'kno once more (Provokes an AoO from Yel'kno and Coer. Note Claudien has soft-cover from Coer. Yel'kno - please see note 1 below. Hit AC19 for 5pts. Yel'kno takes 5pts damage!. )
The smell of burnt hair radiates from Adela, but seems to only add to her rage. The woman screams and rushes at Yel'kno, but her fingers scratch harmlessly at his armor (Hit AC10 & 18: both miss)
Note 1: In anticipation of what your next move may be, it was discussed on the rules board back in May 2011 that you cannot use a trip manuever against someone looking to stand up from prone: 1. Enemy initiates move to stand-up thereby provokes an AoO 2. AoO interupts the normal gameplay and is to be resolved first 3. The enemy is still prone when initiating their action thus cannot be tripped again 4. Melee attacks made as part of this AoO are considered to be made against a prone target, thus the target receives a -4 penalty to AC.
I completely encourage you (or anyone here) to bring this up again in the rules forum if you want to discuss it in more detail
Keiki manages to pull the unconscious man on to the deck. He is still nicely trapped by the net. Meanwhile on deck Pinny and Cato make teir way to the body of the other man. Cato kicks it slightly with his boot, testing the man is really dead (despite being sliced nearly in two).
Coer relishes the combat, first striking Claudien as he attempts to rise, and then punching Adela clean in the face. Apparently the taur has no trouble hitting an unarmed woman. In this case however I don't think anyone will think too harshly of him.
Spire launches a magic missile at Adela, but perhaps his lack of strength is affecting his magic as the damage it does is minimal.
Yel'kno kicks the dagger out of Claudien's hand, and then follows up with trying to sweep the legs out from under Adela. The strike was strong however she still stands.
Jozhur is outraged that the captain continues trying to attack the "women". He steps up again but misses with his strike.
Spire watches the blood drip from his fingers. Based on what he has witnessed this evening, his best guess is that these creastures are some variant or form of kelpie - a malicious aquatic fey.
Jozhur sheepishly apologizes to the Captain for his actions. Fortunately no permanent harm was done. This time.
Yel'kno and Coer agree that the next steps should be to bind the living survivor - Claudien - and perhaps interrogate him later.
Coer meanwhile searches the bodies for answers. Coer discovers 2 x Daggers, a gold amulet with some sort of foreign engraving upon it, and a small bag hidden inside Adela's blouse. Coer tries to cheer him up before showing him the items that were discovered.
Spire notices nothing unusual about the daggers (2 x plain daggers), though the amulet catches his eye.
Jozhur notes the rune engraved on the amulet as being the High Woldian symbol for "water".
Spire detects multiple auras on the amulet: a faint aura of conjuration and a moderate aura of transmutation. One of its abilities - he is convinced - is the ability to create salt water 3/day. But that is all he is able to discern at the moment. Spire is sure that this amulet is unlike any other he has come across. (Note that this amulet is a Fate Item)
Coer pulls out a handful of rings from the bag and holds them out to Spire. Keiki speculates that they may be trophies, whereas Jozhur guesses they may relate to the distress signal the party were investigating.
As the rings settle in Coer's hand a very familiar noise is heard: "Please. You have to help us. Latitude 49. Longitude 123. Cargo ship attacked. We're trapped. Please. Help us. Tell Molly Malone I love her". The message is being "spoken" by each ring and is repeating continuously - much like the one the party received earlier. With so many rings "talking" it becomes difficult to hear. Spire believes each one has been enchanted with the same Magic Mouth spell, and will continue to repeat their message for the next ten or so minutes.
Spire also notices that the bag that contained the rings seemed disproportional to its contents. On closer inspection he determines it to be a Bag of Holding (Type I).
Coming back to the main area, he unobtrusively observes the goings on of the heroes of the Lionfish, giving a shy smile to Coer to acknowledge their successful teamwork.
Yel'kno surmises that the rings act as a kind of bait. Coer is less than impressed, until he realises that the Catacombs buy all kinds of things. A bag full of rings - magical or otherwise - could be worth a nice bit of gold.
Spire tries fiddling with the amulet some more. He is convinced it has more power than he has divulged from it, and no matter what he tries he is unable to get it to perform even the most basic function he has discerned: creating salt water. He recalls a number of wondrous items need a command word to activate, whereas others are required to be worn for a day or so before they take effect. Regardless, he decides he may have better luck in the morning.
Yel'kno takes the final watch for the night, before finally getting some rest come dawn.
Everyone is now fully rested; spells are recovered
Though Yel'kno sleeps through breakfast the rest of the crew enjoy a quiet meal. Tommy glares daggers at Too-Elt, who in turn seems to either not notice or not care. Nary a word is spoken.
The man clutches hold of the bars and sobs his tale to the Captain "What? But.. but she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen! I would have given my life for hers" He shakes his head in disbelief "We met in Heranmar. Why? Are we almost back there?"
In regards to the amulet: "She gave it to me that I may always have her close to me. Why do you ask about it?" He pats through his clothes looking for it. On discovering it missing he looks back at Yel'kno, but says nothing.
In regards to the kelpies and ship attacks: "I'm sorry. I'm not a sailor by trade and rarely go to sea. I had thought kelpies were just legend"
Torturing and killing those who are evil and resisting is the natural order of things.
The half-elf, however, is worried about the taunt about Coer, and so he excuses himself and goes topside to see the great minotaur, taking time to do a deep reading of Coer using his Detect Magic ability.
Coer takes a seat on deck and tries to block the voices through meditation. Closing his eyes he sits serenely. When he opens them he gets a start a Keiki has turned up and is giving him a funny look. "I'm not crazy Keiki. The voices are real. It's just.. Only I can hear them"
(Brock) Jozhur AC18/14/13--CMD 16--HP 36/36 Thursday June 6th, 2013 6:32:15 AM
Jozhur stares off into the water, occasionally looking quizzically at Coer, who is acting quite strange.
"Everything alright down there, Keiki?"
Co-DM Rob - Prisoners Thursday June 6th, 2013 9:04:57 AM Keiki seems a little surprised by the openness of the prisoners. Apparently threats of violence are more effective on them than manners and charm. He excuses himself and goes topside.
Coer reaffirms his sanity (OOC: Your post made me chuckle too :) )
Jozhur gazes off into the distance, every now and then making sure the taur is ok.
Spire and Jozhur doubt whether there is anything more they can learn from their prisoners. The question now is what to do with them.
OOC: Have any healing spells been cast or are people still injured from the last battle?
Keiki (SteveK) AC 14/14/10 CMD 16(18) HP 32/32 Thursday June 6th, 2013 4:12:37 PM
Keiki has learned to not trust much, and so uses his magic to ensure himself that Coer is not under any influence. Breaking his magical staring, the half-elf then sits thoughtfully.
"Always best to check, Coer sir. But WHY are you the only one to hear them? And why would Claudien know this when he is below? It may be important to know in order to find a solution to stop the attacks."
Keiki shares with Coer and Jozhur what they found from the prisoners. "These Kelpies, as Spire calls them, manufacture the rings to lure ships to these waters, and the Kelpies kill and eat them. To stop the attacks, we either need to kill all the kelpies, destroy the way they make the rings, or spread the message that the rings are fake and ignore them. The first two ways are faster but problematic because we would have to hold our breath for a long long time. The third feels like we're admitting defeat and trying to stop the attacks some other way."
Keiki looks at the minotaur and human to see if they agree with his reasoning and if they have any better ideas.
Yel'kno (Jon) AC 19/14/15 CMD 17 HP 16/31 (5 non lethal) Thursday June 6th, 2013 10:48:43 PM
Yel'kno gives the Kelpies a grim smile, "Do not mistake me for a follower of Alemi. I honor King Eberyon and what do you think he would approve of?" He was not bluffing when it comes to the safety of the ship and crew.
"Where did you get the rings from?"
Spirysn'rar Kilarn (Ian) AC 12/12/10 - CMD 14 - HP 11/13 d20+10=25 ; Friday June 7th, 2013 12:24:45 AM
Spire takes his holy symbol of Gargul in his hand and rubs it nervously with his thumb. The elf tries to remember everything he can about Kelpies, specifically whether or not they need water. (Nature: 25)
(Mark) Coerator AC 17/16/14 -- CMD 21 -- HP 22/47 Friday June 7th, 2013 4:17:54 AM If we have to kill them to protect the innocent or helpless.... Is that wrong? Coer asks of Keiki
The fish folk we released hunted us for food as we entered their domain. That was just natural for them. The kelpies are luring people to their death. It cannot go on."
Co-DM Rob - Prisoners Friday June 7th, 2013 8:24:22 AM Keiki ponders the questions that seem to be mounting. Why can Coer hear voices? How does Claudien know of these? How can they stop the attacks by the kelpies? Answers, for now at least, seem hard to come by.
Coer questions whether killing them would be wrong. Killing an armed or battle ready foe in a fair fight is natural for the taur, but what would Domi think about killing an unarmed, imprisoned creature?
To Yel'kno's questions regarding King Eberyon the kelpie seems to visibly relax and replies with a sneer "As one who was also imprisoned I doubt he would view your proposed treatment of prisoners favourably. What's more, how would the Fey King think you should be treating a fey?" Claudien sighs and taps each of the bars in turn. "The rings are taken from the people who would venture in our waters. It was Adela's idea. Why should we hunt for food when the food can come to us? But we could talk all day you and I. Make no mistake, the longer you keep me here against my will the more danger you are in and the less favourably you will be treated when the tables are turned". Yel'kno and Spire sense Claudiens to be speaking truthfully.
Little is know about kelpies, but what Spire does recall is that they survive just as comfortably underwater as they do above it.
Keiki (SteveK) AC 14/14/10 CMD 16(18) HP 32/32 Friday June 7th, 2013 11:48:20 AM
Keiki is really at a loss on what to do. He doesn't know the abilities of these heroes of the Lionfish, and so won't suggest going on an underwater exploration. In fact, as the half-elf reflects on the last fights, at least a couple of the heroes don't have any underwater magic to speak of, so that would be not a good idea anyways. So how to stop the Kelpies? Keiki still doesn't have an answer.
Coer's question is easier to handle, and the half-elf has a directness melded from his early childhood family values and his adolescence as a slave. "Harbors have rules and guards and magistrates to judge breakers of the law, and when I am there I will turn criminals over to those guards. On ship away from harbor? The judge and jury is the Captain. Yel'kno should say what to do with these murders, cannibals, shipwreckers, assaulters of the Lionfish, and attempted sinking and killing of everyone aboard. And if the Captain judges they should be executed, then they should be killed as quickly and without pain as possible."
Keiki pauses a second or two, more from remembering than actually thinking. "Doing otherwise allows them to turn around and kill innocent families of seafarers, and is an affront to every Diety and Power."
(Brock) Jozhur AC18/14/13--CMD 16--HP 36/36 Friday June 7th, 2013 2:02:03 PM
Jozhur looks pretty stumped. He hops down from the mast to talk things over with the others.
The rogue looks to Keiki, "I agree, they certainly can't be turned loose to prey on more ships. Though I'd feel a little better about handing them over to a port so we don't have to do the dirty work ourselves, how far are we from the closest port?"
"Coer said something about the Fish Men, the one we captured say something about invaders coming in and making it hard for them to find food? They probably wouldn't mind getting their hands on our prisoners. But that's assuming it was really a Fish Man and not one another one of these Kelpies. We'd also have to track down the Fish Men again and somehow be sure they aren't Kelpies..."
Jozhur pauses for a moment, "Bah, never mind my rambling, don't think that'd work."
(Mark) Coerator AC 17/16/14 -- CMD 21 -- HP 22/47 Saturday June 8th, 2013 1:37:31 AM
Core stretches and fresh blood seeps from yesterday's wounds.
No, We can't kill them. But we can't take them to bonetown, no chance of a fair trial there.
Perhaps Rum?
I need my healing. I think I have a potion in my bag.
Coer walks over to his room.
Yel'kno (Jon) AC 19/14/15 CMD 17 HP 16/31 (5 non lethal) Saturday June 8th, 2013 9:13:14 AM
"Considering you and your companions have tried to kill and eat the members of this ship I dare say I'd be justified in his eyes" Yel'kno replies to the Kelpie and than shakes his head. "No, no where you got the rings themselves. Who or what is making them talk."
Unless Spire has more to ask After that question is answered, Yel'kno will return to the deck with Spire and inform the others of what little the have learned. "I have no intention of releasing them. At best they are pirates and deserve to be hanged and we are well within our rights and laws of the sea to do that here and now"
