Death on the Road
Tuesday May 28th, 2013 8:24:52 PM

Devlin takes to the air to scout the immediate surrounding area before any of the group moves down the slope to the bodies below. The warm rising eddies of air propel Devlin upwards and hold him aloft with little effort needed on his part. From about a hundred feet up, Devlin has a good view of the trail and surrounding terrain. He can easily see the Grim Guard, the 6 dead on the trail below them and the perfect black circle. He does not see any creatures hiding in ambush or lying anywhere else. Whatever killed them is no longer about.

Oathbreaker and Bruagh keep a sharp eye out for trouble, but note nothing other than rock and scrub brush.
Sam offers up a Feather Fall ring and Urval dons it for his descent. The climb down is quite easy and there are no issues by any to do so.

The group soon gathers about the 6 fallen. None are armed, though all wear scabbards and hangers for weapons. The human and one of the dwarves are not in armor of any kind, the other 4 are wearing battered and torn breastplate armor. Only 2 Heavy shields can be accounted for, both destroyed. The unarmored dwarf has no boots on and his skin is untanned from elbow to wrist to both arms. None of the men have packs, belts or cloaks. There is a great deal of dried blood on all of them, much of it theirs from horrid raking wounds. Massive bruising and crushed portions suggest bludgeoning as well. There is also a fair amount of blood that is likely not theirs. Now that you are closer, the group finds multiple torches and smaller blackened areas all over from right in front of the bodies to lines 30' long.

Could just be a mage but we have seen too many Drow to not count them out. I will start searching the area for tracks and prints try to figure out what happened here. Want to help me Oath?

Devlin begins to examine the area trying to see how the battle happened and where the attackers went.

Death on the Road
Wednesday May 29th, 2013 10:52:48 PM

Devlin and Oathbreaker begin to move around trying to put together what might have happened.
Dernock spends some time getting a closer look at the bodies. Could he know them? Or have heard of them?
Sam investigates the scorch marks and Bruagh keeps a watchful eye for the inevitable trap
Urval watches over everything

Devlin and Oathbreaker move about and can tell the group of 6 were attacked and fell back to the defensive formation where they fell. Numerous broken shafts lie about from missile fire as the group faded to here from 80' further away. The fall back was orderly from what the pair can tell and unfortunately for them, they fell back into the waiting ambush. Oathbreaker and Devlin count 10 main attackers and an ambush party of perhaps 8 more. Partial prints and marks give the dwarves the impression the attackers were giants of some kind. There is also evidence of at least 6 of the giants having been felled, but the bodies have been carried off. Not very giant like.

Sam deduces from his investigation that the circular black mark is from a fireball, the 9 other scorch lines are likely from scorching ray spells

Dernok does not recognize any of the fallen nor do they have any identifying sigils or emblems. Most likely an adventuring party

Bruagh Stormbringer is pained by Sam's mention of Tahni. Bruagh always tries to hide his emotions. What would they think if they knew that he thought of her every waking moment? Only when in battle can he truly get thoughts of her out of his head. Yet, he had grown accustomed to those thoughts. Yet to her someone speak of her, almost as if he had forgotten about her.... brought the pain back to bear with full force.

"We need to go back to the festival, report our success, and find what we can about these giants. I can't help but wonder if these giants have something to do with the stone giants we met when we first came in contact with Delrid? As for Tahni, she was taken by demons and a necromancer... I hope they aren't in league with giants... that could just take this from bad to worse."

Return to the festival
Saturday June 1st, 2013 7:57:17 AM

The group concludes their investigation of the area and decides that after seeing to the dead, they would return to the festival to report on the death of the creature of the mines and to warn of a fairly sizable giant party in the area. Digging is a challenge without shovels, picks or spades, and soon the group sets on creating rock cairns. The task done, the party resumes their journey to the festival grounds. The trip consumes the rest of the day and the party has to spend several hours in the dark to arrive. The sounds of the festival reach your ears long before any sights or smells. From those sounds, it seems the festival has returned to much of its former self. The steady rhythm of deep voices proclaim a song is in progress and an occasional chorus of 'huzzah!' erupts aw well.

One difference you note as you round the bend and the festival comes into view is a grip of 4 dwarves, well armed and alert, scattered among a group of boulders. One of them barks back towards the festival "They return!"

The party enters the festival proper to a swarm of dwarves, some gal flings, a few gnomes and many of the elves cheering and hoisting drinks.

Clan Lord Ironbane and a distinguished looking elf you have not met come to greet you as the chorus of cheers continues, "It is done then? Ha you dour life sapping harp player. I knew they would". He claps the elf on the back with a thunderous blow and laughs again.

The elf's face is indeed looking dour, though a cold smile does appear on his face. The look and smile are directly squarely at Ironbane. "I'm no dwarf, thus I can see such things quite plainly. ". Ironbane barks a 'Ha!' In reply, "No never mind, on that Di, you lost the wager and I expect our agreement to be held in account as it always is."

Ironbane than clearly turns to address the group, "come my freinds, heroes of the festival, come to the main square and tell us all of your triumph."

With that Ironbane leads you to the main common area, drinks are waiting, and so is what seems to be the entire festival

He does his best to present the information about the giant attack and let Lord Ironbane know that it should be considered a serious threat.

As the night goes on Devlin gravitates towards the edge of the celebration. Resting against Raeb the druid begins to whittle absentmindedly. The wood quickly begins to take shape in his hands but than an errant thought crosses his mind and causes a cut to go wrong ruining the carving. We almost lost another lad today. Devlin thinks with a sigh. He tosses the ruined carving into a fire and settles back into Raeb to watch the night slip by.

Return to the festival
Monday June 3rd, 2013 7:10:26 PM

It seems nearly all of the attendees of the festival gather rapidly now that the party has returned. Sam looks for a gnome that he deems worth his eye. While there is no shortage of female gnomes interested in Sam, all three of them, it would not be fair to say any of them are any more attractive than the average gnome.
Terser takes up a drink and some mutton quickly moved his way and does his best to keep his mouth full so as not to startle perhaps any at the festival with the news that a dozen giants are within hours and have already killed 6 hearty adventurers by all accounts.
Devlin himself relaxes, or rather tries to do so, but with a dozen fairly drunken dwarves slapping you on the shoulder and thrusting tankards of ale into your face to raise in another toast to Domi and the triumph of dwarven might over infernal creatures of the abyss, relaxing is a challenge at best.
Oathbreaker looks for alcohol, and because the gathered crowd brought dozens of kegs with them to apparently toast the night away in honor of the dwarves, Clan lord Ironbane and to a lesser extent, anything they can think of. Consumption of alcohol is not a problem. Brooding quietly is.
Dernock is on the look out for doughnuts, and a cherubic halfling in a bright orange tunic and grass green colored pants has precisely what the dwarf ordered. Big as your head sugar and honey glazed doughnuts.
Bruagh himself also has a delema, for clan lord Ironbane is within the throng and appears to be beard high in drink and not going anywhere else anytime soon.

As a group the festival goers are beyond exhuberant in their celebration of the victory of the Grim Guard. Even the elves, whom at first seemed more than a bit put off at the general dwarven behavior at the festival, were far less guarded and haughty towards the group and the other races.

At long last, A tipsy Ironbane arranges to get the entire party escorted to his pavillion. As he flops into the throne, Ironbane loudly bellows as he ejects the others from his pavillion. Ironbane dismisses everyone present in no uncertain terms, except for 2 of his personal guard, the elf that accompanied him originally to meet the party upon their return, a gnome and halfling, both of whom the party met before and know as the designated leaders and representatives of their respective races here at the festival.
As the tent front drops close, Ironbane lurches forward and hoists a tankard into the air, spilling much of its contents, "To Dwarven might and Domi" a cheer comes from outside as well as inside from those silll there. Ironbane drains the tankard and hurls it across the room.

A mighty belch escapes his lips and Ironbane stands, quite fluidly and quite steady on his feet. "Alright now, you've got more on your minds than your victory and we would all like to know what it is." states a suddenly very sober and serious Ironbane

Return to the Festival
Tuesday June 4th, 2013 9:25:57 PM

Ironbane and the others listen intently to any as the encounter on the road unfolds. They ask for some additional details, size of any prints found the body depressions of the suspected fallen giants and very much for all detail that can be recalled and imparted about the fallen. The elf purses his lips and casts a raising eyebrow at Ironbane in silent question. Ironbane grunts and nods and then speaks to the group about and the party.

"That be something I can't say that is not too unexpected. Foul giants have been seen upon the outskirts of the Stone Festival in the past. Likely planning to pull a raid when we all break and go our separate ways in about 2 days when the festival ends."

The gnome then speaks up, his voice and manner polished and refined with study and worldly travel, "Lord Ironbane, from the descriptions provided, I would counsel caution upon the termination of the Festival"

The halfling folds his arms across his chest, producing pipe and weed from his pockets and placing the pipe in his mouth, alights a finger and begins to smoke. He says nothing.

Ironbane speaks again, addressing Oathbreaker's question directly, "Nay, I don't know who those poor men might have been merely by your description. I and and I know their clansman where ever they may be thank you for doing what you could to do right by them. As to the giants, the Scab is flowing with them as you know." he appears ready to continue when the elf speaks up,

"You believe fire was used against them. If you are correct then we at least can rule out the Taiga and Fire giants so at least there is that."

Ironbane nods in agreement, "When the festival is officially ended, I am asking you to stay on for a week more. The Gnomes and halflings and most of the elves will be departing, but I as clan lord of the Festival have a few ends to take care of before departing this sacred area. I would ask that you stay. To perhaps look into this giant matter. I can provide shelter and food as well as access to our forges."

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 13 -- HP 44/44
Wednesday June 5th, 2013 3:53:15 PM

Sam breathes a sigh of relief.

"A chance to rest."

Devlin also looks relieved. Both adventurers feared the loss of Oathbreaker. Now these two Grim Guard members can relax.

Ooc to DM-Do we now have crafting time? If so, how many total days/hours? Also, I'm contemplating selling Sam's belt components. Do we have Catacomb access?

Closing Ceremonies
Wednesday June 5th, 2013 10:14:56 PM

Ironbane smiles and nods as the group agrees to stay on for a few extra days. Bruagh's question brings a somber mood to the clan lord., "No, no word or such yet. But I still hold hope. My heart says there is hope and I shall cling to that with all my might."

The group disperses and is able to enjoy the closing days of the festival as Heroes of the Festival in about any manner that you might wish. A Catacombs messenger is indeed on hand, perusing the wares that the collective groups brought, purchasing some and selling to others. In two days the closing ceremonies calls an official end to the Stone Festival and almost everyone begins packing and by the end of the third day, only clan lord Ironbane, the party and about two dozen Ironbane clan dwarves remain.
The party is brought up to center stage as it were and presented with a gift as Heroes of the Stone Festival and clan lord Ironbane names each of the party as Friends of Clan Ironbane. Each of the party members is presented with a beautifully carved ash twig in the shape of a holly and wrapped about a pin of Adamantine by the elves. Clan lord Ironbane then presents each of you with a steel 26 oz tankard emblazoned with the Ironbane emblem upon its sides and bottom

The catacombs merchant will stay on if the party requests, otherwise he too departs.

While not the Stone Festival, the 24+ dwarves do maintain a jovial atmosphere of song, food and drink. The clan lord himself stays within his pavilion a great deal of the time. Something about paperwork and a few odds and ends to see to.

DM not going to give exact downtime but will do in chunks and the object is to provide a great deal more downtime going forward....4 days of crafting thus far

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 13 -- HP 44/44
Wednesday June 5th, 2013 10:20:41 PM

Sam smiles and thanks Ironbane and the others as he receives the gifts. He asks the merchant to stay just for a short bit as he speaks with his brethren (through email).

Dernock Uristson HP 20/44 AC 22/15/19 CMD22
Wednesday June 5th, 2013 11:06:18 PM

Dernock is going to to take the time to ask the various wizards among the dwaves, elfs or gnomes about learning about magic. Nothing horribly in-depth or technical, just the basics: anything in the spirit of "Magic- the layman's Guide" or "What wizards and Sorcerers want you to know". If asked why he wants to know, Dernock will explain about the time he's been blasted or held by magical compulsions and would rather know more about the dirty rotters who keep subjecting him to firebolts, lightning balls, sleeps, symbols, magic arrows and acid missiles. Dernock will offer coin and possibly legal advice in return.

Urval Torsten: AC23/13/17 - CMD17 - HP54/54

Urval will take the time to help the group catch up on their crafting deficit.

OOC: At the moment, works at 3x speed to put in 12kg of the 15kg for sam's belt of dwarvenkind.

OOC: The Items we got before... how were they divided up? Did anyone take the ring of protection? If not, I would like to have it to keep it from being sold to the catacombs. It is on my list of things to buy.

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 13 -- HP 44/44
Thursday June 6th, 2013 1:48:11 PM

Ooc- Zach: If there are no objections from other PCs, I say it is yours. I grabbed the wand of darkvision for now. Once my belt is made, I won't need it. Urval has the feather fall ring. Other items are not claimed and 2 not identified. Also, the gold was not divided.

Zach: I could really use that item and it is one of the next things I wanted to purchases aside from and Undead Bane weapon.

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 13 -- HP 44/44
Thursday June 6th, 2013 8:40:48 PM

Sam assists Urval with making the belt (mainly by fetching items for him). He's excited to get the finished product, as it will bring him to a closer, physical level to his companions.

Ooc-Thanks for putting time into my belt. It's going to give Sam a big boost!

Well Earned Break  d100=5 ;
Thursday June 6th, 2013 10:01:36 PM

The group as a whole takes a well deserved break and is able to relax and work on some personal projects. Sleep in good beds, eat fresh food and not be overly concerned about being killed or bloodied at any moment. Dernock seeks out and is able to find a couple dwarves learned in the ways of arcane magic and the trio spend a good amount of time swapping tales and trade.

Sam's belt is well worked towards completion and soon enough, IT IS DONE

Devlin and Bruagh spend quite a bit of time together enjoying the break. The two members that have been together the longest contemplate all of the crazy changes that have happened to the group that now goes by Grim Guard.

Well Earned Break
Sunday June 9th, 2013 3:46:57 PM

Everyone should have some coin from the spider as well as possible cash if any of the items are sold and I am pretty sure but will double check that there was treasure of coin and items to sell from the humans that so unsuccessfully tried to attack the party

Sam innocently peeks at the pages to try to see for himself.

Oathbreaker pulls out an unknown tome, which garners Sam's interest though, Oathbreaker quickly shuts down any talk of it. Sam shows off his completed belt, quite dwarfy some would say. Surely as ever, Oathbreaker is soon alone again to research his reading.

Bruagh and Devlin themselves have a mysterious conversation about the mysteries of the mysterious Mystic of Myst. They also talk of Beft, and why it seems the Beft always go to the left.

The Catacombs portal remains open to purchase and identify and of course sell anything the hear desires and that the pocket can afford

Oathbreaker, you my fine bearded friend are fully healed at this point
Bruagh is likely not hasted and a general reminder to check your headers and rest them them to what ever might be normal

3 more days pass for those of crafting bent

Three dwarves quite suddenly 'appear' in the center of the now small camp near the sight deemed the entrance to the Underdark. The air seems to bend slightly and then in a wave of heat the triplets are there. Each seems nearly identical, where similar clothing, that of white linen robes to the ankle with hoods. They are barefoot, their waists have a silver sash and their hands are bare, save a small silver ring on the left ring finger. Their beards are well groomed and do a proper dwarf proud.

Several nearby dwarves jump at their sudden appearance, but quickly calm in apparent recognition. The three men move at a good pace towards Ironbane's pavillion, where the guardsmen quickly usher them inside and then return to their post
