Crescent Valley Competition
Introductions

DM Kent
Tuesday June 11th, 2013 1:39:22 PM

Welcome to the Humbles Ford Game

As the weeks before the Crescent Valley Competition wind down, the atmosphere in Humbles Ford begins getting more electric, as groups from all over the Valley, as well as halflings Wold wide, begin showing up in town. Both inns and the boarding houses are full to the brim, and most available rooms in many of the private homes have been let out to visitors. Even two tent cities have popped up in the south eastern field by the river and the field between the North Tower and Flower Temple.

There might be more people in Humbles Ford than have ever been there. Every night there are partys and get togethers with lots of food and drink and of course song. Of course with all of this influx of people there is also an increase in small brawls and petty crime, but for the most part things are extremely civilized and light hearted. For the Valley has come to celebrate and commemorate the final defeat of the Great Big Uns and the construction of the "Towers" that keep them from the Valley.

Along with all the other teams from the valley and even one team of outsiders, this year it appears that Humbles Ford will be represented by two teams of competitors. One team, The BadApples, is competing for their second time and are fairly heavily favored.

The second team, is well, how does one say it, kind of randomly put together. All of the group members, of course, have known or at least known of the others' existence, as they all live in Humbles Ford. Some may have even studied or worked together at times, and all have had run-ins with individuals from the BadApples at one time or another.

Months ago, each of them had placed their names on a list as being available to fill open spots on teams if needed. But as the final deadline approached and no openings were available, they all came together outside of the competition's office and decided they should form their own team for the games.

This meeting will serve as your introduction to each other

(OOC: For the time being to keep things rolling you may post as often as you need to respond to others' questions etc. David or I will post at least once per day during this time to fill in pertinent info or answer questions, etc. Once the game begins we will begin the one post per person per day rule, Though there may be exceptions to that as well.)

ooc: Welcome to Humble's Ford, halflings! I look forward to starting a great, new campaign with all of you!

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim)
Wednesday June 12th, 2013 6:55:35 PM

Rising early, and carrying a good-sized bag and a tiny table with folding legs, Murphy takes a younger brother and meets up with a few friends for a quick and refreshing dip at the ol' swimmin' hole a ways upstream of the bridge. After drying off, he and little brother head over to the tents. Once there, he sets up the little table, opens up the bag, and displays round loaves of bread.

"Mornin' all! Come well to Humble's Ford! Enjoy a good start to a tasty breakfast. Getcher bread surprise! Bread surprises! Two coppers for the smalls, and four for the larges."

This towheaded young adult halfling stands 3'8" - tall for the area, and wears sturdy brown overalls and a red shirt, feet bare of all but sandy hair. Below his wavy hair and freckled nose is a gap-toothed smile - like that of some of his siblings. Younger brother has auburn hair, also wavy. Murphy slaps his brother's hand as the younger's extended finger aims for his nose. "They won't want to buy them if they see you pickin' your nose, kid," he whispers.

ooc-We're forming up halflings! The beginning of an epic adventure will be starting soon!

Bob Danderfluff LaRue (Also Known as Hazel) - Corsario
Thursday June 20th, 2013 12:06:25 AM

Hazel, as he is known, is a Ranger at heart, feeling more at home under the starts next to a campfire that inside a burrow. He likes beer less than usual for a halfling, loves to hunt his own meals and swim naked in rivers and ponds.
Part of his problems is that he is an illegitimate child. His Mother, Florence Danderfluff LaRue got pregnant at a very young age, and no one accepted the responsibility. She has since got a new life, now married with two small children, and having little and strained contact with her first child.
Hazel has tried to live by his own means, and even as in good contact with the rest of his family he tends to spend many days in the forest, helping his fellow rangers, and trying to combat the druids that harass them.
He thinks that hunting is the natural way to live in nature, and Halflings are no different than any other hunter, as wolves or bears, and to think otherwise is foolish.
Very hirsute for a Halfling, with Mutton Chops of deep brown hair on his face, very hairy feet and hair covered forearms and legs.

Murphy, a druid, concurs with Hazel that hunting is a natural way to survive in the woods. His Aunt Nilli, who trained him in his adventuring profession, is omnivorous. She is fine with whom she deems reasonable hunters. She does not abide those who enter the forest with wanton destruction in mind.

But selective harvesting of trees, or hunting game for food, done properly, are not cause for conflict. Now, Nilli does not represent all druids... there are differing schools of thought among them. The DMs know more about this, though, and no doubt such will come up as we adventure along.

Another Crescent Valley halfling ranger lived with his father in the Culverwood forest, and raised horses in a meadow within, but near the edge of the forest.

Hazel probably had troubles with some of the mean druids. Some of them are not too keen on having halflings flitting about in what they consider their domain.*

* [Stuff I say about this area is based on past events within CV and Culverwood. As those events are 5-10 years in the past, some changes may have occurred, and the DMs and CDM have full rein over How Things Are Now.]

On swimming in the 'ol swimmin' hole: In years past, there were a few swimming spots along the river. DMs - any help in siting them for us? I know one was a bit upstream of the ford by a few hundred yards, with a few trees - and a knotted rope to swing on from shore to water. We had to replace it once in a while when it got old and broke.

Also, the Leafwin Pipewood family had a burrow which was fairly expansive (not as big as the mayor's place, though) - with about ten or twelve kids, elbow room was needed. Also they have an adjacent shop for the family business - making musical instruments and toys, also smoking pipes. Mostly woodworking, with a bit of metallurgy, and use of skins, sinews and such for drums and string instruments. Where would be a good spot on the map for their home and workshop?

Murphy helps to keep bees - he specializes in bumblebees - useful to keep crops fertile, and for making honeymeade (or honey mead, as you will). Should he have the hives near the family burrow, or out along the edge of the farms?

What does the Leafwin Pipewood family thinks of having a friend spend time with them? I mean Hazel could use a friendly family, now than his are "complicated".

So Murphy and Hazel like the forest and swimming, are they childhood friends, then?

Do you have Murphy Character Sheet available?

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim)
Thursday June 20th, 2013 2:45:24 PM

Oh, sure, they'd be happy to take Hazel in. 'Complicated' is nothing new to them :-)

I could see them being childhood friends, sure. Let's make up some background stories together.

Do you guys know how to link your character sheet to your header? If not, please explore the topic on the Woldipedia or ask Jerry/Cayzle. I'm not very technically inclined.

Once you do it, anyone can click on your name to bring up your sheet. Please make sure it is "open to all" to read.

Corsario - I have been trying to use the sCoreForge spreadsheet you pointed out for putting together Pathfinder characters. It has blown up on me multiple times. I guess that Excel 2013 just can't deal with it fully. Will try it on a machine with Excel 2010.

Will try to get Murphy's CS fixed in the next few days... sandwiching that in among a myriad of other tasks. However, such as it is, you can find it here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_xYydxjVu_WTFNHMTJxTmFGeW8/edit?usp=sharing

David - I just asked the question in the LnB about linking info in the header. I used to know, but it's been years, and the full syntax eludes me at the moment.

Bob 'Hazel' Danderfluff LaRue may be a relative of sorts to Podo Danderfluff Pipewood, a monk and Walker of Domi, last time I checked. Podo has roots in Humble's Ford and Hovel, both, I think.

I have to say the spreadsheet is slow to update sometimes. If it starts to "behave" I save it, close excel, and open it again. That does it.

Good idea to ask for the syntax. Let's start to learn the ropes of this place.

Shel Breezelee Kromnite (Gerald)
Friday June 21st, 2013 9:44:40 AM

Shel is a tiny, even for a halfling, cute sort with a certain something about her, drawing people to her. She has a bit of magical ability, with her mother's side having several wizards in the family, including a relative, who is a member of the Second Dinner Club. Unfortunately, much her family's consternation, Shel's power isn't quite fueled by hard study...it's more innate. This talent, which would be celebrated in most families, is a bit of an embarrassment to hers, so it isn't talked about very often.

Personality wise, Shel is always excited to take on new things, but she has a bit of a lack of focus, so she is always looking for the next new thing to come along.

[ooc]DM, I'm not a computer guy either. I sent Kim a copy of my character sheet, so hopefully he can post a link to it here.[/ooc]

Flimsipond "Hin Billy" Williewhim
Friday June 21st, 2013 5:11:18 PM

Yonder strides Hin Billy. Yes, Flimsipold Williewhim, as hairy and as proud as he is tall - for a lilun, anyway; a gingerish and very freckled fellow, with a straw hat of an almost comically large brim, and suspenders that far to good to go well with the rest of his raggedy self. Maneuvering an over-sized mandolin, which he always makes sure to accentuate is a whole octave better than any other of its kind, Hin Billy is jovial and full of energy. Wearing a tight leather jerking that matches poorly with the rest of him, his belt hangs precariously under the weight of a longsword he claims was a verybigun's toothpick - presumably how he chipped his incisor - and that of a quiver. Strapped to his backpack is a short bow he calls Barnie.

Flim has, for more than ten years, tried to make a name for himself in the local music scene. He first founded the "Backburrow Boys", a five person group along with his four cousins: Bim, Nim, Tim, and Jim. Only later did they realize the potential connotations of the name, and disbanded shortly after due to being unable to settle on a name; "The Williewhim Five", "New Hins on the Burrow", and "Hin'Sync" were the most notable efforts. Ever since then, Flimsipold has been performing under the name of "Hin Billy", over the years he has composed multiple tunes for and about Mulberry DrinkWater.

Odo Barfoot (Matthew)
Friday June 21st, 2013 7:22:30 PM

The fat, slow-eyed swordsman trundles into view. One hand rests upon the pommel of a slim longsword sheathed at his belt, the other runs over his too-soon-balding scalp, and the rotund traveller lets out a weary sigh.

Now well known as the freelancer of choice among Crescent Valley's most frugal circles of employers, Odo once lived a simple life himself as an accountant's apprentice. Then, not five years past, he was suddenly struck by the notion of adventure and set out with naught but a poignard purloined from a prevalent prig and a large pouch bulging to the brim with his life savings.

Then the five years past, and Odo found himself back in his old hometown of Humble's Ford, his moneybag and hopes deflated to but a fraction of their original size and his head sagging in correspondence with his belly. This for Odo knew that he would never leave the Crescent Valley. Not that he couldn't, mind you - what gold he had left in that shrunken pouch of his could pay for passage off and away from there a countless dozen times over, but it was the principle of the thing. Never would he stride alongside a merchant's caravan headed for greener markets, nor be sent on a perilous quest to seek and do away with a great and far-off evil which threatened the safety of the Valleyfolk. No, not that. And too he was passing his youthful prime, and looked to most as he already had passed it.

But the competition, maybe, possibly, perhaps, could change his fortune. The four years past the swordsman had missed the opportunity to attend; the first, second and fourth years he had contractual obligations to attend to, firstly to Brum Hummelworm, a young man who happened upon a pack of feral housecoats in the Highlands; secondly to Madame Williewhim, the refined country belle in the transportation of her finest overly-fermented apple hooch from a secluded shack in the Red Hills to the market in Hovel; and fourthly to "Lord" Farbough, a strange old hin who was attacked by what he believed to be a bear, but in truth turned out to be a rabid dog. Odo can't quite remember what happened on the third year, but seems to recall that ample amounts of sour wine were involved.

This year, though, he was well prepared and ready to compete. Of course, he still needed to find a team to participate with.

[OOC]: Apologies for taking my time posting here, was a bit confused as to what I was meant to be doing (and still not 100% sure). Hopefully that's my sheet linked properly, though.

We've had a Podo (monk/walker), and an Olo (a cleric) - halflings both, in Crescent Valley. It's nice to have an Odo - and a devotee of Ffloy, to boot! Terrific writeup, too

Would Odo like to join us at the ol' swimmin' hole?

OOC:
Cătălin - Do you have family from Romania?

Back to the game: Oh, DMs, do we have some idea the nature of the games? Especially since Humble's Ford has staged them before? Just to give our characters something to talk about as we wait to get underway...

Swimming: Murphy loves to swim. He can do the trudgeon (combination of sidestroke and crawl - with legs doing a scissors kick); sidestroke; the fishy-fish (arms at sides, legs together at thighs, knees, calves and ankles, and undulate up and down, using the kick to bring the head up out of the water for breathing); the lazy frog (elementary backstroke); the frogger (breaststroke); doggy paddle; corkscrew (the crawl rotating from face up to face down, continuing around to face up, etc.); and he can approximate the heaving monster (butterfly), although that is the one stroke that wears him out if he keeps it up too long. He can cross the river with it one way, but has to rest if he wants to use the heaving monster on the way back. Otherwise, he can go back and forth for quite some time.

Odo Barfoot (Matthew)
Saturday June 22nd, 2013 10:27:17 AM

Odo isn't much of a swimmer. Often, though, in his youth the then full-haired halfling could be seen leaping from edge or rope into the pool; a graceful somersault or airborne pirouette followed by a less than elegant "KER-SPLOSH" as he hit the surface, drenching onlookers and disrupting those already swimming. Odo'd then spend the rest of the time floating about on the surface before leaving abruptly when he had to return to work.

Bob Danderfluff LaRue (Also Known as Hazel) - Corsario
Saturday June 22nd, 2013 1:27:19 PM

Hazel, as any good Ranger, learn how to swim seeing the bears do it. As big as they are, bears are able to swim with grace and speed, if not with much style. That is Hazel, swimming with his head out of the water while padding the water with both hands and feet in an awkward but effective movement.
And he is silently proud of the time he is able to hold his breath.

No, Catalin, no relatives in Romania (that I am aware of). I used to live in Russia, though, and became acquainted with a few Romanians in St. Petersburg, and a few gypsies who had lived in Romania. Am more so, though, lightly acquainted with Romanian wine - available in many kiosks.

I speak Spanish, and a very little amount of French, plus some Russian. I thought Romanian would be interesting to learn, as a Romance language. What languages do you speak, in addition to the two you have demonstrated here?

Is your email the 'Dev Dev' one? Am trying to sort through who has what email address.

By the way, it would be cool to listen to a mandolin 'a whole octave better than any other of its kind'! It is good to see a bard who has a (unique) way with words.
---------
Glad to see that Odo, if not much of a swimmer, is a competent floater, and excellent diver, though the surrounding swimmers might dispute the excellence of his entry!
---------
Gerald - looks like you got the link syntax down.
---------
So, Corsario - how long can Hazel hold his breath, anyhow?
---------
And, everyone - one free bread surprise, on the house (the Leafwin Pipewood house, that is)!

Flimsipold "Hin Billy" Williewhim (C. Neagu)
Sunday June 23rd, 2013 3:02:20 AM

I'm amazed it's Romanian wine that's available in kiosks and not tsuika, that's our good old traditional drink. It will burn your throat so good you'll eat onions to wash it down, hold down the tears.

I only really speak these two languages, Romanian and English. I've also been studying French extensively over the years, but it didn't really stick. Romance languages in general are quite similar, though! It's no rare sight to see an Italian and a Romanian speaking their respective language and still understanding each other.

And yes, that's my e-mail.

So are you Russian then, tovarisch? I'd really like to learn the Russian language.

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim)
Sunday June 23rd, 2013 5:53:32 PM

Never tried tsuika. Actually, I do not drink much - and two servings of whatever is my absolute max - usually I'll drink 1/4 - 1/2 of a drink. I like the taste (and don't drink things where I do not find the taste pleasing - never alcohol for alcohol's sake).. A few family members had real drinking problems, and long ago I resolved not to carry on that tradition.

I, tozhe, ya nye russkiy. Ya americanyets. [And also, I am not Russian. I'm American]

Was born in Seattle. But I very much loved living in Russia - though living there can be tough.

I've chatted away with Brazilians, they speaking Portuguese, I speaking Spanish. Tougher to understand folks from Portugal - the language there has diverged from Spanish farther than the Portuguese of Brazil. I can understand Italian somewhat, and French somewhat, Catalan better.

Bob Danderfluff LaRue (Also Known as Hazel) - Corsario
Monday June 24th, 2013 11:21:50 AM

From Hazel's memory lane:

Once, while swimming with Murphy on a pond, they made a contest to see how long they could hold their breath. Hazel grabbed a lungful of air and gently put his head in the water.

His idea was not to fight the urge to breathe, but to let that urge pass, and ignore it, as if it was something that the water could carry again. After a minute he started to feel the urge to get his head out. He ignored it and concentrated in the movement of the water, the temperature of it on various parts of his naked body, the feeling of the sun on his skin.

After a couple more minutes he felt the urge again, now powerful and urgent. He felt his muscles tense and his throat convulse hoping for air. He thought on a sunny day, the grass green and the flowers in bloom. He thought of what would he like for dinner. He let the urge pass over him and go away. He refused to raise his head and get some air.

The urge passed.

He was floating, gently, on the pond.

He didn't need to breath anymore.

The got scared, and quickly get out for air.

He had never tried to last that long underwater since. But he knows that if the needs arises, he can do it.

Hey everyone love the posting I am seeing so far.

We got two more players this morning so, we now have 7 official players for the Humbles Ford game. Which leaves us with 2 final openings to fill and then we can officially start the game. I can't wait. I am actually on vacation this week, and back on Wednesday at which time David W and I will start vetting character sheets. (of course David you may start without me if you like :>).

Anyway as soon as we get our last two players and they at least get their concepts in to us we will start the game officially.

I am effectively computerless as I am in the mountains and drove 8 miles into town to pay to use an internet café computer so please don't feel like I am ignoring you.

DM David

Into town strides a smaller brown eyed Halfling. Carrying a small mace and a symbol that looks like an Anvil with a hammer in front of it. It looks to be carved from wood. A quick glance most could notice he is very hesitant and does not seem to be used to this area. When getting closer some will notice his green eyes. He is very hesitant to start conversation with strangers but if approached he will gladly talk about his past and his dreams. His mother left with his uncle when he was a baby and he was raised by his father until he was 17. At the age of 17 his father unexpectedly died. Upon that time he was taken in by the local temple warshipping Domi where he stayed until he heard about this years Competition. He was 33 by this time and decided it was time to leave the Temple to search for his Mother if she was still alive and to try to show his courage to Domi. Now all he has to do is find a team to be able to prove himself.

OOC: I will work on finishing my character sheet tonight.

Checking in. Feel free to go back and forth from "in character" to "out of character" as you are doing until we officially start. Kent and David will go over how they want you to organize your posts when the time approaches.

Once the game starts, we do tend to stay mostly in character and separate the in character part from the out of character part. When in combat, you may list AC in the Post Name Field if you want.

I tend to post my in character stuff first, then draw a line and list any OOC info I may need to list for the DMs convenience. I'll do an example post next so you can ask questions if you wish.

Tomwise, seeing that Murphy took the brunt of the dragon's breath, moves to stand behind him. He then pulls out his healing wand and touches Murphy with it [Cure Serious Wounds Wand] for 20 hps.

"There you go my friend. I'll restore your Con as soon as I can."

He peers hesitantly at the dragon and then realizes that he's showing how scared he is. 'Don't let it show,' Tomwise thinks to himself. 'Never let it show."

"Hey ugly dragon! Your breath stinks worse than my feet!"

-------------

34 of 34 hps.[current total]

Sanctuary has 5 rounds left
Shield Other on the mage has has 4 hours left
Tomwise still has 2 points of temp strength damage affecting him.

So does that kinda make sense? Luckily, we're 1st level and the "detail" builds gradually. :)

The idea is to limit the OOC to the minimum possible. The story is easier to read that way.

For instance, you don't need to list your entire spellbook, for instance. It is helpful for the DMs; however, to list ongoing effects, durations, etc. for them.

Note I didn't list the number of charges left on my Cure Serious Wand. I just changed it on my character sheet. Same with spells.

Some DMs even want the spell durations kept on the PC sheets. We give the DMs leeway, within reason, for the amount of details they prefer to be listed on combat.

I tend to fall on the more conservative side and prefer the info to be on the PC sheet when possible.

There is a "box" to select if you need to send a private post to the DM. However, know that all DMs can read those posts.

Email works best for questions and concerns about something the DM decided the previous round, etc.

It's early Saturday evening and people are filling up the Dancing Pig. Not many have strayed to the dance floor yet but most male eyes are on one local beauty named Alouryn. She has been dancing steadily since she finished her supper meal with her colourfully decorated staff and psychedelic patchwork pants. Her long red hair flows over her face hiding her striking green eyes and freckles. Her blouse is fully buttoned however, for a Priestess of Flower does not encourage lust. As the song changes Alouryn looks around the room carefully before announcing, "Now is anyone going to join me up here or do I have to do all the dancing by myself?"

"Bob Danderfluff LaRue! You have some agility in those bones - come on up here!" Alouryn gently guides Hazel up from his seat. "Play something fast HinBilly!" Alouryn leads as the music picks up but assures Hazel he's doing all the work as the two begin to flow merrily across the dance floor. Patrons begin to clap along as the bard increases the pace of his song. Bob and Alouryn are hard pressed to keep up with the music but they make it to the end of the song before collapsing on their bottoms in the middle of the dance floor. For Hin Billy to turn down a request for a song - why, not even the end of the world could bring that by! Unless, of course, he were already fulfilling a request, or in the very much usual instance in which the crowd is asking to hear that one insufferable tune 'Handout-fowl'. But since that was not the case on this occasion, the natural follow up to the request for a rapid song came indeed quickly, with Hin Billy tipping his comically large straw hat and then fiddling his hairy digits about the slick and tender frame of his mandolin to a simple and energetic tune, accompanied by his high pitched vocals.

"Well Mulberry's a dame what makes me sing,
Y'know, I went and I gots her a diamond ring.
But her keen-cat-eye saw there thing-don't-shine,
Just wouldn't wanna hear that I ain't got a dime.
And she looks at me with a <PG13>-munchin' grin,
She say, 'Billy, why don't ya sell your mandolin?'
I say, HONEYY! See how you treat me wroOohohng!?"

Alouryn grins at Hazel as they sit on the floor and sings the last line with him,
"I say honey, see how you treat me so wrong!"
Maybe not quite in tune, but she definitely knows the words after spending many nights dancing to Hin Billy's songs. The she returns with Bob to his table and orders some Elven wine. "I think even I need a break after that!"

Attention Haflings

I am ready to start green-lighting your character sheets. When the sheet is completed, email me at medicdave79@yahoo.com. Include your name and PC name in the email. I'm putting an email list together. If your sheet is not hyperlinked yet, please send me the link.

"Completed" means that the sheet is...completed.

Make sure your math is correct.

Include weight and cost of equipment.

Include encumbrance levels.

Include your name and email on the sheet.

I fill in all skill values on my PC. Even though your PC is a caster that doesn't climb and backflip, you might still need a roll for climb or acrobatics. It's good to have them filled in for ease of reference.

Spell stuff- spell name, DC, and spells per day.

I will be glad to answer questions, but please know this. I look for my answers in the core book and Woldepedia rules. Those are both available to you as well. ;)

Here is my PC sheet for an example Sam

Hey all I am back from vacation and have started looking at sheets as well.

One quick thing to note:

You are playing halfling PCs therefore all your armor and weapons and some equipment weighs half of what is listed so please take that in to account when figuring out you carrying capacity and encumbrance.

Also make sure you list your armor and weapons in your equipment section.

Eral decided to make his way to the Dancing Pig to see if there was any entertainment for the night. He was happy for find that there was a very entertaining performer named Hin Billy. He had not heard entertainments like this in a long time and even started tapping his foot along with the beat. By the time the song is over he is watching all the other halflings dance and sing with great amusement. He stays in his seat as he is still a bit shy but before the night is over he introduces himself to Hin Billy and thanks him for a great night of entertainment.

I have been all over the map the past few days - and may be so for a few more.

Over in the Giggling Ghost, Hazel is asking about a dog (presumable to use as a mount).

Kendry Leafwin Pipewood, one of Murphy's many older brothers, had a Bernese Mountain Dog, although I think we called it by another name to make it more Woldian. Can't find the notes on that at the moment.

Polly Leafwin Turnbell, adventurer in the Crescent Valley campaign, and she and her family also live in Humble's Ford. She had some younger siblings who are by now in their late teens and early twenties. The Leafwin Turnbells may be a good source for a puppy - but the details of working that out is up to Kent and David.

Will try to have Murphy's CS ready by Friday... Just a Real Busy Week® for me!

Aha! I found it. It is called a Caran Hills Dog in the game. This dog, plus some well-placed caltrops, helped Kendry to escape from a necromancer pursuing him with expeditious retreat - Cayzle was DM.

The stats in the linked document were for DnD 3.5, rather than Pathfinder - so, you'll certainly want to reference Pathfinder rules.

Thank you very much Kim!

DMs, I think i have my sheet ready for revision. I made my own, as I like to improve on things, hope you like it.

Character Sheet

For the rest of the players, I have an image of him: Hazel Portrait

In spirit of full disclosure, Hazel has 2 dogs (not for riding, but for hunting). Is that too much?

Another question: I would love for him to have a falcon and others trained animals in the future. How many is valid?

DM David: Looks great except 2 big things that I see.

1. Read the Woldipedia entry regarding companions. This might make you think twice about the dog. Just saying.

www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/House_Rules

2. Your encumbrance. This will affect AC, movement, and many of you physical skill checks. I don't see that reflected on your sheet. You might want to drop some of your carrying weight or prepare to play a slow moving, easy to hit, clumsy ranger.

Flimsipold "Hin Billy" Williewhim (C. Neagu)
Thursday June 27th, 2013 2:46:07 AM

My sheet is also done - has been for quite some time. Just click the link in my name, and let me know if anything's up.

DM David: Looks good. SUPER picky things.

1. Your name and email on the sheet.

2. Move the spells per day "1" from the level 0 spells to the level 1 spells.

3. You need a spot to keep track of spells per day. This is for both you and the DM to reference. For example:

Spells per day
Level 1: 2 (1 left)
Level 2: 1 (0 left)

Murphy Bumblebee Leafwin Pipewood (Kim)
Thursday June 27th, 2013 3:38:14 AM

I was thinking of having a Caran Hills dog as a pack animal. In addition to saddlebags, the dog would definitely need to carry a little cask around the neck with a high-octane beverage within 'for emergencies.'

That would qualify, under the rules which DM David cited, as a roleplaying companion, rather than an active companion.

DM David
Thursday June 27th, 2013 4:36:57 AM

If the PTB (powers that be) approve it, go for it. If they approve an enchanted, purple table to be your pack mule, I say terrific. Check the link for info on registering your animals. It has been my experience that the rules on companion animals are very tight. You aren't allowed to have a circus of animals following you around.

Also, I am choosing to point out character sheet problems on this board not to beat up players, but to help everyone know what is expected.

Odo Barfoot (Matthew)

Hazel (Bob Danderfluff LaRue) HP:13/13 AC:17/13/15 - Corsario
Thursday June 27th, 2013 10:13:21 AM

First: I will accept the DM rule on my questions.

1. Companions
I read the rules about companions. Yes, very limiting. I did ask by email and in the rules corner about it on June 19th.

[quote]My first question to the Greek Chorus: What can a character do with the Handle Animal skill?

By the Pathfinder PRD, he can (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/skills/handleAnimal.html):

- Handle an animal
- "Push" an animal
- Teach an animal a trick
- Train an animal for a general purpose
- Rear a wild animal

But in the House Rules I found (http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/House_Rules#FOLLOWERS.2C_ANIMAL_COMPANIONS.2C_FAMILIARS.2C_ETC.):

- Active companions are companions that provide some mechanical advantage during combat rounds. The only companion's allowed other than ones granted by class levels are non exotic mounts (Horses, Warhorses, Pony's, etc). Combat companions may attack, use skills, be ridden, carry items for you, be equipped, scout use abilities and otherwise provide mechanical advantage. They may in turn be attacked.
I am making a Ranger in the Humble's Ford game, and I was thinking in having him "adopt" animals. A ferret here, a wolf there, a bear if possible. APART of his "normal" Animal Companion (which won't get until level 4th). How many can he have (buy?) at character creation?
So, what are the limits here?[/quote]

The answers I got:

[quote]Cayzle
You can have horses and dogs that you buy on the core gear list with which you use Handle Animal. Ditto an Animal Companion. In game, you might find animals that you befriend or charm, and handling them in battle may be useful. A Lost Child (Woldian PrC) can call animals to serve him for the duration of a module, say. However, you cannot keep such animals with you long term. Unless the animal is bought on the Core List (a dog or a horse) or is granted by a class feature.[/quote]

[quote]Dan k
Getting animals in the wild, would be a DM and game thing. I would encourage you to let the DM know as part of your character you want to do this type of thing. As a DM I would look to build it in now and then. Basically make a ferret or what have you part of the treasure count
No limit to my knowledge on animals purchased. Might be one on how many you can be training or rearing at the same time
If you try and use them to gain combat advantage you can expect the enemy to attack them. Companions are hard enough to keep alive, regular trained animals would be well nigh impossible. Again that concern is only if you use them for combative advantage[/quote]

[quote]Rob C
Dogs and horses are near the bottom. Depending on what you intend to do with the animal your DM may allow your to 'reskin' it. For example, buy a 'dog' but call it a 'large cat'.
That site has all the Core rules we use, and I'd highly recommend bookmarking it. Hope that helps![/quote]

So I make my questions to my DMs:

a) What can a character do with the Handle Animal skill? RAW or are there specific limitations?
b) Is there a limit on Animal Companions? Number? Possible actions?

As I understand:

- Handle Animal does not have limitations in the Woldian House rules: Hazel CAN train animals, rear wild animals, the whole 9 yards. The only limit is time and " A handler can rear as many as three creatures of the same kind at once."

- The are no limit on "Passive" companions.

- The limit on "active" companions is "The only companion's allowed other than ones granted by class levels are non exotic mounts". Dogs are not "exotic" mounts, as are in the Base Equipment List, so they can be used as "active" companions. Dogs not used for mounting are there too, and seems it can't be used as "active" companions (but yes as "passive" ones).

Am I reading this ok?

Specific questions:
Can Hazel befriend and train a wolf in the course of the adventure? A bear? A falcon?
Can he buy them? Find some cubs or eggs and rear them?
Can he use a falcon be trains to explore or scout?
Can he use a wolf to track?
Can he use a bear to flank an enemy?
Can he do that with a dog? With a Riding dog?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to see if Handle Animal and the ability of having animal companions is useful / existing in the campaign.

I forgot!

2. Encumbrance

I tried to "separate" the equipment is "carried" and "on the body". When on the road he carries all his "stuff" around (making him "high" in encumbrance, slowing him to 15' speed - noted on the Character Sheet).

When in "combat" / "adventuring" he drops his backpack and things tied up to the backpack (shovel, bedroll, etc) and remains with the items on his body and the two belt pouches, and in that case he is light encumbered.

Is that ok? Valid? Should he drop stuff?

DM David
Thursday June 27th, 2013 1:22:00 PM

You could technically do that, but it'd probably cost you an action (which could become costly in some combats). Also consider traveling speed for the group. Finally, what about climbing a rock face? You would have to take your gear off to climb. What if you critically failed a climb check? Some nasty DMs would have the gear fall all the way down the cliff...

I personally, don't like encumbering my PC at all. If he can't comfortably carry it, he doesn't. I don't like penalties. I suggest dropping weight or drastically increasing your strength.

DM, I think my sheet is ready to be checked out as well. It isn't pretty, let me apologize up front, since it is actually in word transferred over to google. With my meager computer skills, and with Kim's help that was the best I could do, lol..

DM David: Looks good except for your feat selection.

I'm not sure why you chose "heighten spell". My understanding of meta magic feats is that they use a higher spell slot to increase their potency. None of your 0 level skills seem to benefit from using a level 1 slot to improve. You won't be able to use it on your level 1 spells as you don't have a level 2 spell slot to burn to use it.

Anybody let me know if I'm mistaken on this matter.

Lastly, (broken record) please keep track of your spells per day remaining on your sheet or in your posts.

OOC: I just updated my weights and a little on my spells. I should be good to go.

DM David: Looks good except for skills. You even have a nifty spot to track your spells used!

1. You need to apply your ACP from your splint mail to your dex/str skills. For example you have acrobatics at +2.

+2 for dex, +2 for race, and -4 for armor check penalty= 0

2. You shorted yourself on your heal skill. I don't believe you added your +3 for a rank to a class skill. You should have a heal at +6.

OOC: DM, you are correct about Heighten Spell. I can't use it right now. It's just my favorite feat ever for sorcerers, so I figured I would pick it up early, if that is okay. If not, let me know and I'll sub out another feat, and grab that one at third level. Thanks.

DM David: You are welcome to choose it. I just hate to see an extremely, valuable feat slot not get used for 2 real time years of gaming. We level once every 6 months. It is totally up to you though. Maybe you should just put a section in your character sheet describing how much you love the heighten spell feat. :)

I'm done checking sheets for the day Haflings. I will start up again tomorrow. Feel free to email me at medicdave79@yahoo.com with questions that aren't related to animal companions. I called in the PTB to tackle those questions.

Shel Breezelee Kromnite (Gerald)
Thursday June 27th, 2013 8:53:53 PM

That is a good point, DM. As a newbie here, I forget how long it takes to level. Lt me think and I'll advise tomorrow if that is acceptable.

DM David: Very acceptable. I've got sheets I haven't looked at yet. Pick a feat you like (that is legal) and consider your sheet done.

DM David
Thursday June 27th, 2013 10:01:58 PM

Here is my feeling on the situation. Mind you, I'm a new DM, there is another DM (Kent) who has say and is a veteran DM, and the PTB can weigh in and overrule ALL others on these matters. Also, please know that I DO want to cater to everyone's hopes and dreams for their PCs to the best of my ability. As a DM, I am not against you, but I do have a story to tell that involves months of planning, many rounds of combat with dice rolling, and 7-8 other PCs to deal with. So please keep that in mind as I answer these questions. And now...without further delay...my opinion.

Can Hazel befriend and train a wolf in the course of the adventure? A bear? A falcon?

Any/all of these could happen. However, I am not sending the party on pet hunts. An animal could be thrown in here or there, but don't bank on an animal per (fill in a time frame).

Can he buy them?

I would say no for the above animals listed.

Find some cubs or eggs and rear them?

Possibly, but doubtful to be successful. You are going to be adventuring about, not living in a cabin. Your PC WILL be stabbed, thrown to the ground, set on fire, fall great distances, swim, and so on. A cub or egg would be hard to protect in any of these circumstances.

Can he use a falcon be trains to explore or scout? Can he use a wolf to track? Can he use a bear to flank an enemy? Can he do that with a dog?

If an animal is your legal "hunter's bond" choice, I have nothing against any of those tasks. You can use that class ability to have an animal be extra assistance in any way likely to be possible. NPCs can attack your companion in battle. We have a druid's "bear" (re-skinned to my knowledge) in the Forged campaign flanking, clawing, and biting a giant right now.

With a Riding dog?

This is where I have heavily mixed feelings on the matter. I've never seen a horse get a perception check. They mainly carry weight, dictate travel speed, and magically disappear during combat. Although a perception check is not a "combat" mechanical advantage, it is a mechanical advantage none the less.

To me, (and please don't hate/kill me) using the handle animal skill or purchased animals to get scouts or other benefits is stretching the limits of the Woldian rules. If you want to teach a dog to dance and roleplay that it is helping in a performance, I say great. Maybe a falcon fetches your empty mug so you can fill it with ale. Sounds terrific. Once you start having them make "rolls" or do tasks that affect the game, it starts to feel un-Woldian. I am not the only one who feels this way.

With that being said, handle animal is not just a roleplaying, fluffy skill. A horse panicked and bucking out of control while attached to a wagon filled with children needs to be...handled. Again, I'm on your side for the long run and want you to enjoy this experience, but I still need to manage certain aspects of the game in the process. Kent and the PTB are welcome to weigh in.

Friday June 28th, 2013 1:51:47 AM

First off all, I would say you as Master have the prerogative to set the "rules" of the campaign. If you feel something should not be allowed, I will accept it.

So I changed the Character Sheet for Hazel. Let me summarize the changes:

- Changed the dogs for a Riding Dog. Hazel changed from a dog-assisted hunter to a mounted ranger. Everyone say hi to Faoil!
- Dropped some equipment, and let Faoil carry the rest. Now Hazel is light encumbered, as well as Faoil. Speed is now 20' on foot, 40' mounted. Light and Fast!
- Dropped Knowledge Geography for Ride.
- Trained Faoil with nice Tricks! Attack boy!
- I will declare Faoil as an Active companion. From the Woldipedia House Rules on Animal Companions and Followers
You must declare companions as either active, or roleplaying:
Active companions are companions that provide some mechanical advantage during combat rounds.

Sounds good to you?

Yay, SteveK is here! Okay, animal questions for Murphy in Humble's Ford:

May I keep a parakeet in my villa cottage just outside of Plateau City? The one with the feathers on the left wing slightly clipped, so that she tends to fly in tight circles (the bird, not the cottage)? Whose favorite song is "Antepenultimate Crimson Sunset", and who can peal an orange with her beak so that, most of the time, the whole peal comes off in one or two pieces? [The housekeeper hates her, because the bird calls her "O Great Rotund One."]

I plan to bring a jar of earthworms. Can they help me with tremorsense?

My wallaby seems only to be able to jump forward, and not backward. Is there a skill or feat (or even a magic item) which can help me train him to jump backwards, too? Despite that wallabys just cannot jump backwards?

May I buy a dog, then skin it as a Giant Mastodon, with a prehensile tail?

Can I get a honey badger animal companion?

========
Should I have posted this private to DMs?
[Kim tries to shake the silliness out of his posts before we launch the actual game]

If he approves, I have no problem killing... I mean accepting your companion.

Warning: Don't get attached to your companion, combat mount. It will not level with you (no hp boost). If an AOE spell hits, your mount will be dust. If your level 1 mount is in combat against my level 2-20 NPC... Just trying to be your crystal ball. Annnnd my conscious is officially cleared.

Corsario's Question - DM David has approved, ACDM SteveK approves. Registering Faoli as an Active Companion. :-)

Kim's Quesions :-)

- May I keep a parakeet in my villa cottage just outside of Plateau City? The one with the feathers on the left wing slightly clipped, so that she tends to fly in tight circles (the bird, not the cottage)? Whose favorite song is "Antepenultimate Crimson Sunset", and who can peal an orange with her beak so that, most of the time, the whole peal comes off in one or two pieces? [The housekeeper hates her, because the bird calls her "O Great Rotund One."] Yes, but do not expect any other Player or DM to post about it or acknowledge its existance.

I plan to bring a jar of earthworms. Can they help me with tremorsense? Look up "Jar of Earthworms" in the Corebook and see if it has a +2 Circumstance Bonus.

My wallaby seems only to be able to jump forward, and not backward. Is there a skill or feat (or even a magic item) which can help me train him to jump backwards, too? Despite that wallabys just cannot jump backwards? Unfortuneately, I do not see 'Wallaby' in the Corebook for animals or animal companions. Plus, sounds like a role-playing issue to me.

May I buy a dog, then skin it as a Giant Mastodon, with a prehensile tail? According to the House Rules on Wikipedia, no.

Can I get a honey badger animal companion? According to the House Rules on Wikipedia, only if you reskin, get DM permission, then ACDM approval.

Just curious, how many of us in Humble's Ford are new Woldians?

Excellent, so Hazel is good to go?
Equipment and encumbrance looks ok?

I am a new Woldian, BTW.

DM David: Your PC looks great! Please check your email regarding your dog.

Just to be clear to the group, I want to state my ruling on mounts specifically. This has been echoed by the PTB and is not specific to Humble's Ford.

Your non-combat mounts will not be attacked during combat. That does not make them immortal. They can die, be chased off, stolen, or unable to follow due to terrain. No item/possession (aside from a legacy item) is permanent. I'm not out to smash your stuff, but if it happens, it happens.

Welcome. Hopefully all of these people stay. I assure you that they will be people you may never meet, but will still call family.

So we start on Monday! Excellent!

DM David: Is your dog an active companion or just a mount?

Hey Guys with the exception of KIm, who is new, oldstock, This game has been opened only to new Woldians so there is Kim who is returning to us and then 8 others of you who are to experience the Wold for you first time........ so congrats and good gaming. Let's have fun with this and show the rest of the Wold just how good we are.

Active companion... the enemies he bite will attest to that :D

DM David: Fair enough. I'll coat the bad guys in dog treats. :)

ACDM SteveK: and I'll track the Active Companion. :-)

Heads up Wold! The haflings are here to take over!

My post will be early tomorrow as I will be working all night watching people sleep on ventilators...

My initial post might be fairly late tomorrow. I literally have depositions all day tomorrow. Luck of the draw I guess...first day of the game and I am actually busy!

**** Kent: That's alright DM posts will only occur once every 24 hours so we will try and post close to the same time each day, so as to give everyone the opportunity to post.
