Ironbane's plea
Thursday June 13th, 2013 8:56:59 AM

OoC: technical glitch of getting new module approved

The three dwarves are inside Ironbane's pavillion for the rest of the day and well into the evening. What is going on inside is unknown to any but those inside. One thing is certain, something is brewing and the Grim Guard pick up on 'that feeling' fairly easily. The other dwarves about the camp sense it as well. Hackles are up, nerves are starting to set on edge and it won't be long before rumors begin. In casual talks by the coking fire, the three dwarves that appeared are identified as not being part of clan Ironbane, but rather part of the Stone Festival.
'They were here for the opening ceremonies, placed Ironbane as the lord of this years festival, mumbled some stuff at him and proclaimed the Stone Festival begun.' is the short of the story.

Shortly after sundown, clan lord Ironbane himself comes to the Grim Guard, without escort of any kind, his face a mask of grim determination and anger. Walking into your midst, he simply begins talking
"They found her, my beloved Tali. I am told there is a mask of darkness is about her, that she is wrapped in a veil of hatred and pain. But most importantly they have told me where she is. Omens are dark about this and I must ask that you go in my stead. There is treachery here and I know not whom else I might trust."
The dwarf pauses for a moment before he continues, "I ask that you go and bring her home to me and her tormentor as well. If only his head arrives I will make do. You may speak to them if you wish, the channellers, but have care with your dealings"

Bruagh makes his way into the pavilion to speak to the channellers but will wait on his friends to join him before he speaks.

During the day at the festival a 4' dwarf with a short red beard and hair and donned in purple robes approached Urval, holding out a message to him. "Urval? Message from general Sarnak, your needed back at the field, and I am to take your place here. " He looked the dwarf up and down, then grabbed the envelope, opened it and read the contents, then nodded. Both of them then looked for the rest of the Grim Guard and the dwarves in charge to appraise them of the situation, then Urval quickly took his leave. The new dwarf saw him off at the exit, then met up with the rest of the Grim Guard at sundown, talking to them before Ironbane entered. "Well, Hello all. I'm the new meat sent out by Sarnak to see about replacing him. He was quite annoyed at the army sending out Urval, that guy works well in a army but ask him to deal with people and it's like talking to a brick wall. I'm Karnas, I'm a sorcerer, and I excel at making our targets, opponents, meat bags, whatever you want to call them confused and disoriented long enough for you all to do your business. I'm also a member of the sages college and, well, you've seen one of my more successful experiments already. Which one, I'll leave in the air for the moment.

A small fox-like head appeared out of his robes and appeared to utter a few short...words.. to him. "My familiar has mentioned I really shouldn't have said that, and if I'm going to be putting my lives in the hands of this regiment I'm not going to be as silent as back at the college. Here they won't steal your inventions out from under you as soon as you mention a inkling of them, " He turns to the group. "Right? If I make up some new spells or items you won't steal them and market them as your own?"

As Ironbane entered the room and detailed their adventure, he nodded and looked to the rest to see what the plan was. He had just joined, he didn't know what was occuring.

A breif exchange finds the Grim Guard shuffling personel. Urval is recalled and a dwarven sorceror named Karnas takes his spot. The cleric's healing will surely be missed. The group accepts Karnas easily enough and with Ironbane in the lead they head back to the clan lords pavilion. The clan lord moves past the guard, with the party in tow and enters.

Inside, the smell of nutmeg permiates the area and several hanging lamps were lit providing plenty of light. the three dwarves in robes are standing near the stone throne and facing the entrance where the party is coming through. In unison the nod. "Greetings good dwarves." They say together and with some cheer.

Ironbane nods and gives a partial bow to the trio and then turns to the group, "You're on your own now lads, what they tell you is for you alone." and with that and pat to the shoulder of Terser as he passes, clan lord Ironbane exits his own tent leaving the party with the odd three look alike dwarves in robes.

Once Ironbane leaves, they speak and once again in unison,"The good Clan Lord Ironbane has said that you would wish to speak to us on the matter of his daughter Tali Ironbane, pledged to Kabur Rockbreaker, son of Clan Lord Huran Rockbreaker."

"What we have to say on the matter is for your ears alone and you are bound to not repeat it to others without consent. Before we speak, your weapons must be removed and remain here. We will await you in the inner sanctum of the pavilion."

With that, they bow together to the party and turn, disappearing between two great hanging rugs just behind the stone throne.

Sam clears his throat as he breaches the hanging rugs. He does this both to prepare for an act of diplomacy or if they are walking into a trap, to cast mind-bending spells.

Karnas follows the group in, his familiar remaining with just it's head exposed, as they watch the occurrence. At the request to leave their weapons, he shrugs and looks to his hands. "I don't think they've dealt with casters much have they?" His familiar laughs, as he pulls out his crossbow and leaves it outside. "They can keep it if they want, I just keep it for grappling hooks...which I left back at the college, I need to go pick those up in the town." His familiar laughs harder, falling out of the robes and landing on the ground below, revealing a fairly small orange-furred bat with a longer tail than normal, and a rainbow pattern on his wing membranes, green at the tips, shifting to blue in the middle and brown at the base, curled up upon itself in a fit of giggles.
He sighs at his familiar, reaches down, and grabs his familiar and puts him back on his perch in his robes, his familiar composing itself and looking forwards with a grin, as Karnas mutters under his breath; And of course she never had such a laughter problem, but one of hers, oh yes quite a large one. He looks up and looks to his familiar, speaking a couple words to it before following with the group further in

The group leaves their weapons, the ones that can be left, in the empty audience room of lord Ironbane's pavillion and follow the three strange dwarves into a smaller antechamber of the great tent. Karnas and his familiar share a joke about leaving the crossbow, a weapon, but not his weapons. Oathbreaker is nervous at being vulnerable and Sam prepares himself in case this becomes a trap.

Candle light flickers from around 2 dozen large tapers about the 15' square area the party now stands in. Each dwarf holds a different colored candle, blue, silver and dark red. The dwarf with the silver candles speaks in a clam low voice, "We are quite familiar with your kind Karnas, but our tradition dates back longer than your practice."
The holder of the Blue candle speaks "To openly carry the tools of violence, begins with the promise of violence."
The Red candle holding dwarf concludes the thought, "Which leads to naught but destruction."

The trio set down their respective candles, gather together and standing side by side with hands clasped they bow to the party politely, holding there for more than a few minutes.
There is an eerie quiet all around. It takes a moment to register, but then it hits you. You can hear none of the commotion that is going on outside of the plain canvas walls of the tent. The only sounds and smells are within the room itself.

Raising and speaking at the same time the dwarven voices take on a strange harmonic tone, "The clan lord has spoken to me on you behalf and has asked that i assist you in what ways i see to. I have agreed and see you have met my terms and so I shall answer what questions i may for you."

The three dwarves close their eyes and begin to moan, mouths closed, that soon becomes a mono-toned bass hum. Deeper, and deeper their voices become, impossibly low, hollow and deep. The very air itself seems to almost resonate and shimmer, and then suddenly they stop. The air seems to still shimmer, simmer like a summers day upon the stones in the heat and then a flicker of light erupts, flaring to the proportion of a 5' pillar of fire.

A voice speaks from the fire in common, "Speak Grim Guard, fallen of Domi, drunkard of the mountain halls, lost children of the Scab, Dark betrayers kin. Speak."

Bruagh felt that all that really mattered to him were the lives of those mortals. Being subservient and cowing before them did not make them any less likely to kill so that was off the table.

"I would ask for information on Tali Ironbane on behalf of Clanlord Ironbane, and I would ask for information on Tahni Wyrmrider on my own. I would have your terms for information on both before I hear your answers." says the grizzled fighter in a flat even tone that betrays little emotion.

The Grim Guard ask their questions, wisely recalling the ways of demons. They ask the price that The Trio would demand, unwilling to invest too much into a source this uncertain.

As these questions are asked, again the air becomes.. agitated... as if something is forcing its consciousness into the tiny pocket of reality that exists within this tent. The space between the Grim Guard and the flame seems to resonate, buzzing as if alive and filled with malicious intent while the pillar of flame roars its challenge to those around it.

Then, as before, it stops. A silent calm falls upon the room.

The voice from the fire speaks again, echoing impossibly as if the words are spoken in the maw of a great cavern...somehow from the mouths of the dwarven channelers before you.

"Indifference! Disrespect! They do not use the proper greetings! They do not show the reverence I deserve!"

The fire begins to smolder.

"It has been long however, since I have been treated as it should be. I shall let this pass, but know you have raised my ire. I am not a mewling creature like the Bebilith you removed from this plane. I am far older, part of the Wold now, and old enough to have seen the rocks of the Scab birthed around me...and with the removal of the pest that stung my eye...my vision has returned."

The flame spits again, but only briefly.

"Though why I should share it with such rude guests it beyond me."

The fire now begins to crackle, seeping a thick white smoke from it's base. The smoke forms the shape of a regal dwarven female, her head proud and jaw strong. A circlet sits upon her head, marking her as the princess of some sort, most likely the Ironbane.

"This one is clear to me now. I know where she is, yes. Perhaps if the powerful and mighty Grim Guard could deign themselves to show respect proper, I could tell you? The price paid by the other only ensured that I speak with you, and speak with you I have."

The fire begins to lose a little of it's intensity, fading in hue from orange and red to icy whites and deep blues.

As Sam offers the most humble of apologies, the pillar of fire begins to swirl and crackle. Its color gradually brightens to what it once was. Well done! When Braugh and Devlin drop to their knees in platitude, the fire sparkles brilliantly and burns with previously unrestrained vigor and life!

"This! After untold years of being summoned like a common creature in service to some apprentice magus, I am shown the proper homage! Rise Grim Guard! I forgive you your discourtesies. My vision is yours."

The smoke quickly dissipates, spreading the image of Ironbanes daughter into nothingness. After a few moments, the smoke swirls, showing several prominent features of the scab. First you make out what appears to be a large gathering a tents and buildings. Easy enough. The festival itself. A small tendril of smoke breaks from the rest and carves a path, highlighting cliffs, gorges, mule trails, and campsites. An uneasy sense of urgency begins to fall over you as you realize that the tendril has stopped not even 5 miles from your current location. The tendril wraps itself over a large rock in the middle of a bowl shaped valley.

Then it simply flicks the rock away.

The tendrils and smoke swirl back in upon themselves, funneling into a whistling vortex. The smoke streaks across the room into a low hanging drape, enmeshing with the fabric. And thus, a map is born.

The cavernous voice continues, to itself. "Closer than he would have imagined..he will be displeased." Aware it can be heard again, the voice gains strength and speaks to all present. " I am called Ashtrious. There is one who may be known to you, Runus, a dabbler in the arcane powers. He is the one who has taken Tali Ironbane."

The fire bristles for a moment.

"Since you have shown me respect, I shall tell you another thing. There is another name you will know. Kadis. Shadows hide this ones heart from me. He has taken his reason through his love and shadows pervade all his doings. He calls himself and those who follow him Shadow Masters. Paugh! They shall not be masters in the end. "

The fire begins to dwindle now. The heat gradually recedes from the room, and perhaps the smallest hint of noise and bustle begins to tickle your senses.

"You will be tested in more than might, Grim Guard."

As the fire recedes and smolders to nothing, one tiny remaining tendril of smoke snakes slowly towards Braugh. It playfully rises in a swirl around him, poking at his armor, his skin, and pausing near his eyes. It studies him for a moment more, then glides near his ear.

Braugh Only Highlight to display spoiler: {"You. The halfling showed great courtesy, but you.. You showed deference. Abandonment of the pride that fills the Dwarves and all mortals to the sole intention of seeking aid to aid another. This I will honor. You will very soon be forced to make a decision. You may be forced to stand with me over your own blood-kin. Do not dissapoint, and you will be rewarded with knowledge of the one you seek..."}

The tuft of smoke poofs, and is gone. You stand now in the room with only the The Trio. One of them departs from the others, and rips the shadow-mapped fabric from the drapes. All three approach and you are given the map.

"Go now. Nothing more has he to say."

They gesture towards the flaps through which you came, signalling the meeting has drawn to a close.

Well, now that we know where Tali is being held, shall we be off? I don't fancy delaying and giving her captor a chance to spirit her away somewhere.

He retrieves his weapon from where he placed it and is ready to be off.

Sam is rightfully proud of his accomplishments, and most of the Grim Guard begin to the process of gathering their gear and supplies for what is likely to be a short, but dangerous excursion back out into The Scab. Only Oathbreaker expresses dissatisfaction, even while gathering his weapons. Sam points out that they don't have a lot of choice in the matter, especially if Tali can somehow lead to Tahni.

The Grim Guard manage their packs and set off. The shadow-map is incredibly accurate, even going so far as changing from time to time to help the Grim Guard navigate small detours and to compensate for impassable bits of terrain.

Perception DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { It's obvious the path you are taking has already crossed several merchant routes. It's disconcerting that Tali could have been this close to help for so long and gone unnoticed.}

Within an hour, the steady group of adventurers realize they are nearing their goal. As standard cautions are taken and marching order is determined, a dwarven scream echoes over the red rocks of the scab. The scream is chased by a deep guffaw of laughter.

Following the sounds as far as seems safe, you realize this path opens up into a deep rocky gorge some distance down, bowled in shape, with loose rock and gravel all around. With the height of the gorge and it's incline, it's apparent that the gravel will make travel at full speed difficult. Any movement action greater than a single move requires an acrobatics check DC 10 or it is reduced to a single move. Failure by 5 or more means a tumble down the gorge!

There are a number of rock formations on the floor of the gorge, as well as 9 large humanoids who have turned over a number of carts and appear to be rummaging through their contents. There are three other bodies, Dwarven, that are not moving.

One of these creatures, which are likely some kind of tusked and hunch-backed giants, is holding a kicking and screaming Dwarf up to his chin, garbling some nonsense out loud to the others and laughing merrily while he prances back and forth. It looks like .. he's trying to wear the Dwarf.

Only this creature is armed, with a wicked sized great-axe in a sling on his back.

DM Ken: You find that you cannot understand the Giants words, or even get much impression of what they might mean. It does seem to be laughing and enjoying itself at the moment. The Dwarf however, is not. His string of profanity is fairly easy to understand.

"I'm going to get their attention, we can't stand by and let them kill that dwarf... we have worked together long enough to know what to do... everyone just do what they do best... I am going to get their attention."

With that the former Paladin marches forward as far as he can, preferably towards the one holding the Dwarf. He clangs his axe against his shield and yells as loud as he can to get their attention.

DM Note: If I don't have everything from everyone by tonight, I'll post on saturday the results of combat. I'm leaving in a bit and won't be back till late, but I can't very well skip everyone. Also, as this is our first combat together, here's a few sanity items please.

1: Use the map and give me coordinates for your moves! Otherwise I'm going to use my best interpretation, and I don't consider do-overs in combat. Since Braugh didn't give an acrobatics check, I'm assuming he only wants to take a single move action.

2: Please be sure to read and re-read the DM post pre-combat and let me know if you have any questions, like David did. I'll do my best to re-explain until we all are on the same page.

3: That's all I can think of right now!

Braugh, not one for ambush, loudly declares his challenge to the force of Giants. Clanging his shield and calling out in Dwarven, he draws looks of puzzlement and surprise from the large humanoids.

Devlin gives some instruction to his good friend Raeb, and the beast slinks off even as Devlin takes to the skies in the form of a hawk.

Karnas, waiting to see how the situation unfolds, watches his friends to assess their battle plan and how he might best help.

Sam casts Expeditious Retreat (Please track your rounds of all active spells somewhere in your posts!) and moves off, skirting the more solid top of the bowl, intent on saving the struggling dwarf.

Oathbreakers arrows sail through the air, but to no effect!

Terser takes note of the few loose boulders in the rock formations below, and decides to take advantage of knowing how Giants think. When the nearest creature stoops to pick up a projectile, the Dwarf is ready with a powerful thrust of his glaive.

Giant 8 bellows in pain, but continues his grip on the boulder. As he aims the boulder to smear Terser, the Dwarf get an attack of opportunity (Hit AC 28) and scores another massive blow. (17 Damage) Slobbering and cursing, the giant hurls the stone he is holding at Terser (Hit AC 21 for 10 damage). The giant then thunders forward next to the dwarf.

Giant 7 calls out a challenge as well, and lurches towards Terser. Lacking a weapon, he slams his large fist down at the embatlled Dwarf (Hit AC 24 for 9 damage).

Giant 6 rushes for the nearest rock formation, the thumps it with his fist to shake another large rock free. He picks it up and searches for a target. It looks like he might be lining up a bead on Sam!

Giant 5 shakes a boulder free from the nearest rock formation. Grabbing it in both arms he swings his body for momentum and lets fly. The large projectile streaks through the air, slamming into Raeb! (Hit AC 22 for 11 damage.)

Giant 4 smashes into the flipped merchant wagon in the middle of the bowl. He begins ripping at the neck yoke of the wagon.

Giant 3 moves to the closest rock formation and wrenches a rock free. Poor Sam! He seems to be aiming at the Halfling as well!

Giant 2, ruffled by Baughs challenge, tears a stone free and hurls it at the advancing warrior. The stone formation near 2 and 3 is beginning to crumble... It can't support much more abuse from the giants.

Giant 1 rips a piece free from his formation and hurls it at the now flying Devlin. Dwarves that turn into birds... do they taste like birds or dwarves?! This giants inquiring mind wants to know! (Hit AC 12 or 7 damage.) This rock formation is also beginning to crumble!

The Giant Warleader looks grimly over the battlefield. Displeased with the interruption in his play, he makes note of the quick footed Sam closing in on his position. Without a boulder in hand, he hurls the kicking Dwarf at Sam, then starts advancing on the Halfings position. (Hit AC 15 for 9 damage, the dwarf takes 23 damage from the impact with either Sam or the ground.)

Tersers dancing glaive continues to find purchase in the soft insides of Giant 8. Breathing heavily from it's wounds, it stumbles forwards and falls face first into the gravelly slope. Other than breath, it makes no movement.

Sam, ever the Hero, sees a chance to quickly take the advantage of the battlefield. With supreme effort, he casts two spells in rapid succession. Only Giant 3 manages to resist the spell!

Karnas adds more magic to the battle, enhancing the speed and reflexes of Oathbreaker, Terser, Braugh, Raeb, Karnas, and Devlin! You all have haste, please add that to your header.

Oathbreaker makes up for his last round of misses. Enhances with great speed, he Peppers Giant 7 with multiple arrow, burying 3 arrow deep in the Giants chest.

Devlin hears Sams plea for help and obliges, landing nimbly upon the fallen dwarf. A white healing aura surrounds the bird of prey, then transfers from himself to the wounded merchant. (CLW for 13. Devlin, please update your spells memorized section of your character sheet, or begin adding them to your posts. Thank you.)

Giant 7 (49 Damage), enraged and concerned at quick dispatch of Giant 8, cups both fists together and raises them high before slamming both of them back down onto Terser in one massive gambit. (Power Attack/Vital Strike hit AC 27 for 23 damage.)

Giant 6, (blinded) roars in confusion and puts his hands up, fully defending himself as best he can.

Giant 5 tearns another boulder loose, but this time hurls it at Sam, while yelling something to the others in Giant. (Hit AC 20 for 10 damage)

Giant 4, having finished tearing the yoke off the wagon, tromps towards Sam! (Ignore the d20 result of 25 and the damage of 18!)

Giant 3, having resisted Sams magical assault, rips free the last sizable chunk of rock from his pile and sends it flying at the halfling before stomping towards Sam as well. (Hit AC20 for 13 Damage)

Giant 2 (blinded), frightened at the sudden blackout, drops prone to his stomach and covers his hands over his head.

Giant 1 (blinded)spins in a quick circle, also confused at the loss of his vision. He stops spinning and blunders south as far as he can until he reaches the gravel.

The Warleader (blinded) begins to furiously swing his axe, trying as best as he can to defend himself from any incoming attacks!

DM OOC: Just waiting on Oathbreaker. By the way guys, I'm back in the hospital. My hernia surgery from the 24th has gotten some infection going on. Point being I don't have my map software. I'll tell you where the baddies are at and what they are doing, but it wont update till I come home. Sorry!

Devlin squawks a bit as he hops off the body of the Dwarf. As he does the temperature begins to drop in the area and snow begins to coalesce around the brutes. Within seconds a full fledged sleet storm is raging among them blocking sight and hindering movement.

Raeb rushes up to the attact the giant fighting with Terser and swipes a pay at his ankles.

Giant 7's grief over his fallen ally is short lived, as Terser cuts the large humanoid down in relatively short order.

Sam hurls an epic string of insults at the Giants, who unfortunately, don't seem to understand. Peppered by a number of sailing boulders, the GNOME (Not Halfling, sorry!) turns invisible.

Braugh performs a heroic charge, smashing into Giant 4 and relieving him of some excess skin and blood he's been carrying around all these years. He takes 37 damage.ac

Karnas calls arcane fire down upon the warleader. He takes 13 damage and has a fiery sphere in his area!

Oathbreaker shoots at Giant 6, sinking an arrow into the creature for 9 damage.

While Giant 6 and the Warleader continue to struggle with Sam's blindness, Giants 2 and 1 shake the spell!

Giant 6 goes full defensive. Why is it so cold all of a sudden?!

Giant 5 trudges southwest through the sleet storm, emerging outside of the iceclouds.

Giant 4 tries to crush Braugh beneath his massive arms! Critical Hit for 18 points of Damage.

Giant 3 flanks to the other side of Braugh and tries to squish the Dwarf as well. Hit AC 31 for 11 points of Damage.

Giant 2 trudges east through the sleet storm, but makes no progress.

Giant 1, wary of Terser and his wyvern glaive, takes a few steps forward and scoops up the downed dwarf, hurtling it at the fearsome Terser. (Hit AC 24 for 14 Damage)

The Warleader, still blinded, focuses on shielding himself as best as he can.

(Remember guy! Be specific in your attacks, who you attack, where you move etc. Also, I am still in the hospital and cannot update the map until later this evening. We have some last minute posters in this group, so im going to try to make your dm posts early instead of waiting all night to react. Consider this todays post. Sorry about the one missed.)

Karnas (Haste 10 rds, Flaming sphere 4 rds): AC12/12/10 - CMD13 - HP40/40 , Cark AC: 19/16/17 - CMD 14 - HP 20/20, Blindsense 20'  d20+9=17 ; 3d6=9 ;
Wednesday June 26th, 2013 8:48:12 PM

Karnas, observing that the field was effectively handled, decides to try having a bit of fun. He casts silent image, using the spell to make several groups of rock on the field animate themselves into earth elementals, the elementals standing by as Karnas calls out into the field. "I've had plenty of time to call out my army of ninja elementals, I'd suggest retreating before I order them all to attack whatever giant is within range. (Bluff 17)" During this, the Flaming sphere attacks the giant leader again (9 damage).

OOC: Cast Silent image, make the rocks in rectangle between A4-H7,C2-F3 appear to animate into large earth elementals (can affect 10 10' squares, so 10 large earth elementals, 8 in 2 rows of 4, and 2 in a row behind it.) If a giant attempts to attack a image have the image retreat back far enough to be out of range of melee strikes, with the other elementals moving as well if necessary to allow for the movement.

Use bluff to make giants believe elementals are under his control and holding back only because he wishes, and that that they are silent because summons are special.

Silent image has will disbelief, only if interacted with.

Terser regenerates some health, then saves a falling dwarf! As Terser gingerly sets him down, he realizes that this dwarf has likely been dead for some time...

Braugh makes short work of Giant 4, slapping aside the creatures defenses and felling him despite the help it received from it's kin.

The remaining giants give pause for just a moment as Karnas makes his presence known to the field of battle. "Forga-woop! Boopie-toke fern squidge-widge!" The giants further away go back to their own personal combats, not affected by the bluff since they don't speak Dwarven.

Karnas's illusion hits the field, a strange amorphous blob of earth elemental, all conjoined at or below the waste. Since silent image only allows for the creation of a single creature or object, this is the closest he could come to his goal.

Devlin begins to summon a powerful creature, and spends the turn in his summoning stance. Raeb charges into Giant 3, provoking an attack of opportunity. The bear deftly slips underneath the giants arms and tears into him with mighty claws.

Oathbreakers arrows crackle across the field, burning the flesh of Giant 6 with huge amounts of magical current.

The Warleader (13 Dmg) passes his reflex save, stepping over the largest area of the burning sphere. He is also pleased to find he can see again! He stomps through the ice, waving his axe angrily.

Giant 1, still not eager to engage Terser (who is now standing in a pile of dead things), charges north after Raeb, swinging as hard as he can at the fierce bear, but even his power attack bounces off the bears hide.

Giant 2, having been obscured by the sleet storm, suddenly emerges from it's western edge!

Giant 3 (13 damage) cannot move! He is held by Sams magic!

Giant 5 joins his clanners near Raeb, and also fails to cause any harm to the angry bear.

Giant 6 (35 damage) scowls and tears an ice covered rock from the pile. He throws it at the giant earth elemental creature in front of Devlin. The earth creature nimbly moves, and the rocks sails on by. The giant looks back and forth from the rock to the illusion, then fixates his gaze on Karnas. He seems to have figured it out!

Terser bounds over dead Giants and finds his way to the nearest living enemy. He swings his mighty Wyvern-Glaive, but the attack is batted away at the last second by Giant 1.

Sam tries to stifle the majority of the Giant force, but amazingly, they all resist his magical burst this time around.

Braugh opens up Giant 3 from neck to belly button, bathing in the sweet smell of victory and giant guts. A bath may be required!

Devlins Elementals swarm Giant 1, even while Raeb sinks a claw deep into the fellow for 32 combined damage. He then calls a bolt of lightning to strike Giant 1!

Karnas maintains his illusion of an elemental horde. Still, he manages to concentrate enough thought on his Flaming Sphere to bring it scorching across the field into the back of the Warleader, who takes the full impact unawares!

Oathbreaker inches forward, continuing his rain of death, peppering Giant 1 with another massive wave of electric arrows.

The Warleader, now free of blindness and magical ice storms, trudges around the northern wagon cart and swings hard at Braugh. Vital striking is a funny technique for Giants.. Smoosh them becomes "Deliberately Smoosh Them!" (Hit AC 22 for 26 damage)

Giant 1 (58 damagae), more frightened of Terser than all the other creatures on the map, tries twice to crush the dwarf before backing away.

Giant 2 takes a final 5ft step out of the ice and tries to grind one of the small elementals into dust but misses it completely!

Giant 5 stomps on the elemental that his friend missed, hitting AC 17 and 28 for 23 combined damage. The elemental is no more!

Giant 6 tears his last stone free. He shouts at the others and points at the army of elementals, then back at Karnas. The sends the rock sailing through the air and crashing into Karnas for 13 damage! (Hit AC 21 for 13 damage)

As Terser lays into one giant the elementals shift their focus to another. Both sink below the ground only to pop up around Giant 5 swinging clb fists at its ankles. Raeb shifts her weight a little and lays into the same giant claws swinging wildly.

Seeing Raeb attacking another giant Devlin lets another bolt of lightning flash down at it the electricity sizzling its skin. He quickly takes to the skies and lets off a simple spell causing a bright flash to erupt before the war leaders eyes.

Sam, thinking that Braugh is in trouble, throws out his final 2nd level spell. The raging Warleader however, shrugs off the magic and keeps swinging at the dodgy Dwarf.

Terser adds another downed Giant to his tally. The grim warrior barely pauses to admire his work, then sets off for the next unlucky foe.

Karnas, presented with an opportunity for battlefield control, takes it. Though the Warlord seems unaffected again by his flaming sphere, Giants 5 and 6 are stuck fast.

Braugh offers a dance to the Warleader, and quickly takes the lead steps. After two solid wounds, the Warleader is beginning to show concern.

Devlin calls down a lightning bolt from the skies, and Raeb without effort claws through the webs to maul Giant 5. Earth Elemental one pops up from the ground and into the thick webbing! It slips through them easily enough but it's attack misses the Giant. Earth Elemental 2 glides underground and emerges at K 12, but gets stuck in the webbing! (CMB+4=13. Needed 15)

Oathbreaker draws a line of shot on Giant 1, then realizes the creature isn't moving. Terser has done this work for him. Saving his arrows, the dwarf looks for another target.

Giants 5(22dmg) and 6 each break free of their webbing bonds, but are unable to do much else.

Giant 2 has no trouble moving through the webs, Braugh and Elemental 1 may make attacks of opportunity! Giant two swings at the now flanked Braugh! (Hit AC 32 for 9 damage)

The Warleader(34 dmg) swings wildly, but ultimately fails to draw blood from Braugh. (Hit AC 28 and 13)

To keep piling onto poor Sams personal string of mishaps, the Warleader shrugs off the Hideous Laughter spell!

Karnas finally has success and is rewarded with a yowl of pain as the Warleader is burned by the flaming sphere! He then taps Sam with a CLW wand, healing the Gnome of 6 damage.

Terser opens the guts of his 4th Giant. Giant 5 wavers uncontrollably on his feet before collapsing dead into the webbing. Score 4!

Oathbreaker mysteriously takes aim at another dead giant. He shakes off the bout of Necrorage and instead aims at Giant 3, hammering the unawares giant with well place arrows of shocking death in the back.

Braugh brings his dance with the Warleader to a quick close, leaving the splattered insides of the monster all over the canyon floor. He whips around nimbly, taking his final attack to giant 2, who his caught by surprise at the death of his leader!

With the Warleader dead, Devlin's lightning crashes into Giant 2, who takes the full blast in the back. It stumbles forwards, then falls dead at Braughs feet. Raeb easily shuffles forward 5 feet through the webs and drops his full attack into Giant 6. The great bears reaching claws and maw mortally wound the Giant, which scrambles for freedom. It tries to flee, but a savage attack of opportunity from Raeb catches it by the neck as it scrambles. As the massive bear clamps its jaws down, the Giant struggles less and less until it finally shudders and ceases to move.

All Giants have been slain!

A quick medical examination reveals 3 of the Dwarves have already left the Scab, their souls free to escape this brutal land.

The giants possessions were few, but valuable.

- The War-leaders Large Sized Great-Axe
- A strange granite amulet (from the War-leader)
- A hugely over-sized ruby ring (from the War-leader)
- Eight Giant coin purses, containing a total of 8000 in gold coins

As the smoke clears and the spells overlaying the battlefield are dispelled or fizzle on their own, the Grim Guard take a moment to catch their breath. A number of them are wounded, and they probably need to manage their resources to some degree.

As they recover, the lone surviving dwarf finally calms down enough to speak.

"Thank.. thank ye! Thank ye lads! My brothers.. they be passed.. my business is in shambles, overturned all over the scab! But I can see me woman and me babe again and for that you have my eternal thanks!"

His eyes well up and he begins to blubber a bit.

"Me name be Galf, a merchant contact for the Ironbane clan. You have made an ally eternal lads, this I swear! And see, it not be tha' bad. I can take the wheels from that cart... and a few of the mules weren't eaten! I can take some of this still in to sell and have a bit o' money for me poor brudders widows..."

He sniffs loudly and wipes his bloody tear stained face with his beard. "Is.. the way to the festival clear? I know I not be too far away...these stupid cretins jumped on us from above.. we were so close!"

His ramblings cease, and he sits on a stone, sniffling and holding his head in his thick hands.

Notes From DM Ken!

To whichever hero is holding the Smoky Map, the arrow points insistently at a large boulder remaining in the rocky ground nearby. You fought a battle not 200 feet away from where Tali is being held captive!

You also recieve 2500 Xp each for defeating the Giants and clearing the scene!

I'll soon ask you all for nominations for Hero Points! I always nominate 1 character, and let the players nominate the other. Then usually the DM's decide if any other heroic actions need rewarded. Look for an email soon!

(NOT your DM post for tomorrow. Answering some questions.)

Sams detects magic on the ring, the axe, and the amulet.

While the ring does not detect as magic, the amulet gives radiates a faint aura of transmutation. The Axe is also magical, but does not produce any distinctive magical aura.

Galf replies, "I can travel, yes. It will just take me a bit to prepare the wagon to take my wares and me brudders bodies to the festival. I did not have any weapons, I'm sorry. They aren't allowed at the festival and usually do not sell well and ..Wait! Dunri had a quiver with him, for the road!."

The dwarf runs to near where one of his brothers lie, and tenderly checks the dwarf over. A few are broken, but there are about 13 recoverable arrows in the quiver.

He looks back at Oathbreaker.

"Go ahead lad. He'd want the Dwarf who avenged him to have them."

He then busies himself getting his last wagon in traveling condition.

The druid nods to Galf as the merchant thanks the group. Be quick about gettin ta the festival grounds. The way was clear but this be The Scab, its never a safe trek through its lands.

Devlin does what he can to help Oath gather arrows and tries to fashion a few new ones for him if possible. "I wish I had some magic to give you some aid on the road, but the only spell I could give you would be invisibility for 7 minutes or so, which isn't long enough to do much." He then looks to the items and Sam's question. "Yeah, give em here and I'll see just what they are, Identifying items is one of the many things I'm good at." He places the two items before him, taking a couple rounds to cast identify and thoroughly examine the two to discern just what they were.

OOC: Spend 3 rounds to cast identify, examine both items for the necessary time. With identify in place, Karnas has a +22 to spellcraft, so there's no chance to fail to identify the items. Also, I'm assuming that I can't take 10 on identify checks, is that correct?

DM Ken: Correct. The items are identified as a Amulet of Natural Armor +2 and a Large-sized Great-Axe +2

Devlin washes himself off and offers a quick drenching to any who want it, but no one takes him up on the offer.

Oathbreaker accepts the arrows from Galf

Karnas is able to identify the two magical items the leader giant possessed

Terser hefts the Great Axe, but it is beyond him to wield. The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon (whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed, or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered by one step for each size category of difference between the wielder's size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. If a weapon's designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can't wield the weapon at all. A Great Axe is a two handed weapon

Bruagh wishes to push on, the group is close to where Tali is being held. In fact the smoke map indicates she is within a cave currently blocked by the boulder practically next to where the group stands.

Galf busy's himself preparing to get underway, salvaging what he can and gathering his dead to take with them.

The party is left to their own counsel. The rock is fairly large, and very much out of place in its current location. Definitely placed there on purpose to seal the entrance. It looks to weigh in the neighborhood of a ton. It does not seal the entrance perfectly, perhaps an unarmored gnome could slip in, perhaps he'd just get stuck. The sun is still fairly high in the sky, indicating this particular hot day in the Scab mountains still has many hours of light in it.

Sam heals himself with a wand of curing, drops a bit of gear and starts to squeeze his way through. It is tight and very much pitch as black can be as he pushes past. The cold stone scrapes a bit against his brow and cheek, but he is able to gets past. Not a chance the broader and especially armored dwarves are getting past. Thanks to his new crafted belt, Sam has a good view of the first 60' of the passage. With the efforts being made outside to get the fulcrum and lever in place, he can hear little but the grinding on the stone behind him. There is an odd sweet smell in the air. The gnome cant put his mind on the memory, like trying to catch the details of a dream when first awake.

Outside, the dwarves go about solving the 2,000 pound problem. With a long enough lever, one can move a mountain. A large sized great axe proves to be long enough to move this particular mountain. It takes a few minutes but with a groan of protest, the great boulder gives way to dwarven might and know how and relinquishes the entrance. Before the party is 5' passage that broadens into a 8' passage and extends beyond current vision

OOC: Cark scouts ahead, if he sees anything off he'll report back before getting closer

"What took you guys so long?",Sam says with a big smile.

He collects his mitral shirt and backpack and finds his way to the middle of the dwindling remains of the Grim Guard .

"Is anyone carrying that axe? We might be able to sell it for a pile of gold later. I'm assuming you're equipping that amulet, Bruagh?"

The Oathbreaker, satisfied they aren't being followed, looks to the group and says, "Put it in my bag. Should fit." He gestures to the larger pocket on his Handy Haversack. Quickly setting the bag down, he reorganizes the pockets so that the main one is empty. Then, seeing he has no room for his tent anymore, tosses it on the ground. "Never use it anyways," he growls.

OOC :: Not sure how big the axe is, but I reorganized my inventory according to Haversack pockets, so unless it's more than 80 pounds I think well be okay?

Going to be gone until Sunday night....

Quick Answers:

The rock seems to have been worked here at the entrance. 30' later as the tunnel becomes larger it is all natural. Best guess is that someone knew the natural complex was here and tunneled to it, or tunneled out from the more natural complex

Monday July 8th, 2013 8:35:44 PM

The party meets up just on the other side of the boulder, now pushed away. The entrance, is situated on the the north side of a outcropping and thus, even with the boulder gone, little sunlight penetrates the place beyond a few inches. Sam welcomes the group and equips himself with the gear he pulled off to get through the gap. The bard then begins using the wand of Curing of nearly everyone else. Bruagh, Terser, Karnas and Raeb. Oathbreaker arranges his magical Haversack and makes room for the Great Axe but it is too large to fit. Central opening can hold 8 cubic feet and a Large Great Axe is bigger than 8 feet long

The Cave
Tuesday July 9th, 2013 10:45:34 PM

Bruagh carries the Great axe and Sam has his curing wand in hand as the group moves forwards down the tunnel. Oathbreaker takes the lead and as he does so Devlin tries to pin down where he has smelled the smell before as well. A sickly sweet odor, but mixed with hints of other things make it a hard thing to pull from memory. The tunnel continues about 40 and opens into a larger cavern, beyond the Darkvision of the travelling group.
Cark flutters back to Karnas as a low moan reaches the groups ears from somewhere deeper in the caves. It echoes and is amplified by the emptiness about, reverberating off stalactites, columns and stalagmites making its source impossible to tell. Other than further in.

Cark chirps and squeeks in high pitches at Karnas, Highlight to display spoiler: {There are things in the caves, deeper in. Bigger than a dwarf, smaller than a giant.}

The group stands at the entrance to the larger complex now, peering past several rows of natural columns and a flowstone curtain. It is impossible to tell much else of what lies beyond the 60' you can see

Bruagh uses his Dwarf Blood ability to try and sense any Dwarf within 440ft. If this doesn't work, he will use the enhanced version of this to extend the range to one mile.

Dwarven Blood (Su): At level 1, as a move action, the Stone Warden can sense the direction and distance to any Dwarf within long range (400 ft plus 40 ft per Stone Warden level). Thursday July 11th, 2013 12:43:08 AM

The group takes a moment to sort a few things out.

Bruagh reaches out with his Stone Warden ability to see if he can find Tali. He detects one other dwarf outside of the those that stand about him. That dwarf is located about 450' away at 2 oclock

Karnas casts Detect Magic and shares the spell with his familiar Cark, asking the bat to go scouting for enemies

Sam casts Dancing Lights, upon Devlins suggestion and sends them out.

Cark flies off and and disappears into the black. Karnas gets the impression of fear pulsing from his familiar in short order

the Dancing lights, bob out and about the cavern revealing much of the landscape and the origin of Carks fears. Slowly moving towards the group is a veritable horde of the walking dead. Some with flesh still clinging to their bones, others with skin pulled tight like black leather and still others without an bit of meat upon their bleach white bones. All have one thing in common, they move with soundless unrelenting purpose towards the party

Karnas, upon seeing the undead before him, sees a potential chokepoint he could send them through and causes a explosion of webbing to occur from the lower left corner of O50, covering the only path for them to advance, as Cark quickly flew back to him and hid in his jacket for the fight, alert for any hidden or invisible targets that got within his blindsense range.

OOC: Cast web at lower left corner of O50, Cark uses blindsense to detect invis or non-visible targets.
