After more than a week on the river, you return to the Trading Post. The place hasn't changed much since you left, but then it hasn't been all that long.
One of the first things you see when you enter the Trading Post is Ka and Pen in earnest conversation together. Ka's warriors stand nearby, looking around at the buildings and people with wide-eyed amazement.
"They're back!" cries Polly when she catches sight of you. She grins and claps her plump hands with excitement. "Back already!" she adds.
Pen turns to look at you. "Well, that was quick," he says. "Relatively speaking. Our new ally here has been filling me in."
Pen is anxious to hear your report, but seeing the way your attention is wandering, he laughs and leads the way to the inn. "We'll get you a good meal, and you can tell me all about it," he says.

The prospect of a decent meal rings in Rag's ears so he gladly accepts Pen's invitation. While eating he says little though. He does not think he qualified for reporting in. He will fill gaps here and there if needed and will answer when questioned.

Asteron has his fill... which means several times what the largest human in the Outpost can eat when in his best form. Besides, this is hot food, good gravy, and fresh bread to scoop it up, so he refuses nothing that is placed in front of him.
After he is satisfied, he turns to Pen and asks, "Since Ka has already began filling you in, why don't you tell us what he's told you already, so we can fill in the details?"
The minotaur will let the others do the reporting, and will be content to just add whatever they miss.

Yngvar pushes the door open and scans the interior before heading for his usual table in the corner, Haggard! You're about to have a bunch of hungry people in here. Yngvar drops his haversack against the wall and settles back against the wall.
A smile creases the travel worn face as he catches sight of one of the bright spots of being out in this wilderness. 'Tis Hope that gave me reason to return, and I do hope that you have some mead ready for me. Yngvar winks as Hope approaches the table with a mug and pitcher.

[Before I forget again, please take 600 XP for the last adventure.]
Your meal at the inn is a lively one. Haggard is serving up a mutton stew, with plenty of fresh-baked bread from Borcht's, and of course, plenty of ale. Just about everybody at the Trading Post "happens" to stop by while you are there, to congratulate you and to hear all about your adventures.
Asteron asks Pen about what Ka told him. "Well, not much," the gnome replies. "Ka speaks Common pretty well for a kobold, but it only goes so far. Turns out that young Hope actually speaks dragon-talk, but I didn't find that out until today, so there wasn't much time to learn more. I gather there was something about a hunt for a river god? Who is and is not a crocodile? And you caught the men who wrecked the waystations, which is good. And we seem to be friends with these kobolds, and somebody called Auntie is the reason for it. And you, of course."
"I thought, when you left here, that you were going to check all of the waystations," he adds. "You decided to come back early?"
Hope comes over to talk to Yngvar, but it isn't all sweetness and light. "What did you mean, sending that creepy Zyk guy back here?" she asks. "The guy hasn't stopped staring at me since he got here. I can't even go to the store without him looking at me. What's his deal, anyway?"

Nodding as Toregan slides into a seat, we'll have a talk with Zyk as well, he may just need a reminder of how precarious his position is.

Asteron listens to Pen's words, before adding: "That is about it, yes, with the exception of us crossing paths with a group of merchants that were going to Town. We escorted them back, hoping they would decide to come here instead, but they were set on going there. So, we think that... Town... and whoever is in charge there is probably behind all the attacks, so we came to report, load up, and suggest we pay a visit."
The taur shifts his weight, as his armor is not the most comfortable of attires. "That visit, we fear, will not be a peaceful one. Thus the decision to come back early. We will need all the help that we can get, whether equipment, advice, maps, rumors... whatever!"
Being a man of arms, the minotaur wants to go in as prepared as he can. He does not want to lose any of his newly found friends either. So, he does what he thinks is best: ask for help.

The moment there's an opening in the conversations Rag says: "Friends I think we need someone to visit the Catacombs. I still have this amulet of natural armor here that belongs to the group and we got several other things that might be worth selling... anyone volounteering for that?"
(Pedro) Faust Havler Tavir'e AC 17/13/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 27/27 // Wolfgang AC 17/15/14 -- CMD 13 -- HP 13/13 Monday May 6th, 2013 6:58:42 PM
Between chugging some ale and swallowing some meat, Faust manages to take some time to say "I'll go, just allow me to add more bits to mr. Worldtraveller's report: we met said merchants shortly after we checked waystation #6 and they said they didn't see anything out of the ordinary, though they did not rest at #2 nor #5."
"Supposing they did not lie and simply skipped those two stations as a result of being in a hurry or good winds, only #9 and #10 are in need of maintenance...heavy maintenance...especially #10 which has a gigantic tree right in the middle of it, due to it being animated by a treant who wasn't in the vicinity anymore."
"Which brings me to this: it was a wonder of luck we managed to find out what happened to the stations to begin with, so I propose to start a project in order to increase communication, for urgency and to start low, for now I just propose to place a journal at each waystation in a semi-hidden location and instruct travelers to log their stay, where they are going and if they've seen anything out of the ordinary, then later a small scouting group can just quickly pass by them collecting these journals and see if there is anything going on."
He drinks some more ale and goes again, "Also regarding the waystations...the merchants were troubled to rest at #7 due to their animals, so artificially increasing its size a bit can do wonders as far as animal trading goes."
"But the issue remains that travelers see the Outpost as a dangerous place that is 'always' on trouble and that's what 'everyone' thinks about us...it seems the rumors spawn from this town place they all talk about, but we are not certain of that nor if they're just folk rumors or spread with ill intention, which is why we believe a trip to said town is on the way."
(Sean) Toregan Dondarin AC 18/14/14 -- CMD 19 -- HP 29/29 Monday May 6th, 2013 7:21:22 PM
Toregan savors the meals, glad to be eating real food over trail rations. "The River God was the crocodile, and it was causing problems in the region, but we killed it so there shouldn't be any more problems at station #8."
Toregan takes a swig of ale before continuing. "Then we caught these druids, continued on with the inspection, and met up with the merchants." A sour look comes across his face as he remember sthe stories of the Post being spread. "Apparently, we have been attacked by kobolds, dinosaurs, suffered a plague, and been burnt down. The only true thing I heard was the destruction of the Gate."
Toregan sighs and looks into his drink. "Without trade, this post will eventually fail. Maybe these are just random rumors, but if someone is actively spreading these rumors, our best bet is the Town. Besides,"
Toregan's face softens into a grin. "We've got two survivors of that gate destruction here anyways. If a giant magical gate exploding and failing mid transport can't kill us, I doubt there's anything that could."
DM Kathy Monday May 6th, 2013 11:57:18 PM Yngvar promises to look into the Zyk situation.
Asteron theorizes that somebody in Town is spreading rumors, and may be the same person behind the destruction of the waystations. Pen looks thoughtful. "It's possible, I suppose," he says. "Still, you have to wonder, if they're destroying the waystations, how do they expect trade to get to them? As far as I can tell, Town relies on those stations just as much as we do."
Ragnarök suggests that a visit to the Catacombs is in order, and you have pins that allow you to access them from here, yes?
Faust fills in a few details, and suggests leaving logbooks at the station so people can communicate on conditions. Pen nods. "A sound notion. I'll see if anybody going back to the Float would be willing to drop them off." He also promises to send a work crew out to station 10. "That Zyk fellow will be a part of it, of course," he says. "Seems only right."
Toregan elaborates on the rumors. "It's disturbing, no doubt," Pen says. "Wish we had more to go on than 'everybody says so,' but I suppose we'll have to start someplace."
You continue to eat, and drink, well into the night. There is a festive air in the inn, despite your recent troubles. Hope brings out her lute and plays a bit, and everyone is eager to hear of your adventures. The impromptu celebration lasts far into the night; it is late indeed before you are finally able to seek your beds.

DM Kathy Thursday May 9th, 2013 12:04:26 AM
The day after your arrival is uneventful. Faust volunteers to make the trip to the Catacombs. [All that will happen "offstage" here; Pedro, you can post to the Catacombs board whenever you're ready.]
The rest of you have some breakfast and talk over your plans. It is evident that a trip to Town must be planned in the near future, to get more information about what's going on. However, there also needs to be a work crew sent to station 10 to take care of that tree and the rest of the damage. Pen expresses some concern about having both your group and the work group gone at the same time. "It'd leave us stretched mighty thin," he says.
During the day, you have the opportunity to watch Zyk at "work," if it can be called that. Today, he is carrying things--bringing grain from the grain storage to the brewery and the bakery. He moves at a snail's pace, a sullen scowl on his face. He is, technically, doing what he's been told, but he is clearly pushing the boundaries to see what he can get away with.
You also have the opportunity to speak with Ka. "This very good place!" he tells you enthusiastically. "Good walls. Good bread. We tell Auntie, start trade. Very good!"

Asteron listens to whatever Pen has to say, having already decide he will do as he decides. He then seeks Ka, wanting to have a little chat with the kobold.
"Ka", the taur addresses the kobold, "this outpost will trade fairly with your tribe, unlike Town. Tell Auntie that she can send traders here whenever she wishes. A few days after your return, Ka and his warriors depart the Trading Post, with a basket of bread and a bottle of ale they managed to trade for, as samples for their village. It is quiet at the Trading Post for a few days. Then a striking-looking stranger comes to town.

He arrived with a group of merchants, but doesn't seem to be with them; indeed, they seem to want little to do with him.

Faust looks the rude newcomer with curiosity, after all, usually people have a reason to be rude, most commonly either to hide something that is very interesting for others or dangerous; in both scenarios, it's a good idea to know what it is.
But as Yngvar is already dealing with him, he turns his attention to the merchants, but still keeps a minimum of attention in case of trouble. His intentions with the merchants mostly to get to know what they are trading for and offering assistance in directing them to whom they should speak to in order to make a sell; using his merchant background to make them feel welcomed in the trading post, hopefully convincing them to come again in the future.

Watching for a reaction, Yngvar asks, Do you know Mr. Bas?

Faust looks surprised by both Yngvar and Asteron's reactions, then recollects his thoughts and adds, "Yes, double coin is always welcome, however, it is my sincere belief that this outpost here is as important to this region as the Town itself, so I'm sure we can get to some agreement that'll be beneficial for all parts involved."
(Sean) Toregan Dondarin AC 18/14/14 -- CMD 19 -- HP 29/29 Wednesday May 15th, 2013 9:49:11 PM
Toregan looks in surprise to the minotaur, who usually remains so composed. Speaking in a calm, yet worried voice, Toregan tries to calm down the infuriated taur. "Calm down Asteron, he doesn't mean anything by this! He obviously didn't know about minotaurs and their honor, or he wouldn't have even thought to approach you with this offer." Turning to Tunks, Toregan gives his an a calculating look. "Unfortunately for your boss, I am under contract to protect the Post. I won't be able to accept you offer."
DM Kathy Wednesday May 15th, 2013 11:37:14 PM Asteron's reaction to the offer is immediate and definite. "Calm down, Horns," Tunks advises. "It's just an offer. You ain't gotta take it."
Yngvar asks to see the coin, and Tunks obligingly produces a bulging purse. He hefts it a few times so you can hear the clink of coins, but he doesn't open it up. "Can't say as I've met a Mr. Bas," he replies. "Why? He a friend of yours?"
Toregan points out that he is already under contract, and Faust says that the Trading Post is important, too. "You gotta think about the future," Tunks replies. "Me, I gotta good future, on account of I work for Boss Wathe. You all want futures, good futures, you oughta be working for him too. This trading post? It ain't got no future."

Faust casts a Message spell so he can communicate with the rest of his companions, and perhaps, with those left behind.
Ragnarök asks whether anyone has any illusion spells that would help the group swap the real Tunks for a fake one. He then asks Tunks whether he had planted his surprise.
"Nah, it ain't that kinda surprise," Tunks says. "It won't come from inside; it'll come from outside. I just have to go set it up, is all." He grins at you, shoulders his pack, and heads toward the gate.
You have been watching him pretty closely this morning, and it doesn't look as if he's left any surprises behind. It would seem that he is telling the truth; his "parting gift" will be arranged from outside the walls of the Trading Post. How far outside? You don't know. Will you have time to find out and stop it? You don't know. Will you have time to find out and get back to the Trading Post? You don't know.

Since Tunks has to setup the surprise outside of the Outpost, they will at least be able to decide if they interfere or not before the surprise gets to the settlement. if possible, he will also take the time to cast Message on Pen and tell him to be ready for any sort of outside attack on the outpost but that the group will try to cut anything that might happen short. All this under the premise of saying his goobyes.
DM Kathy Monday May 27th, 2013 11:32:24 PM
Tunks leaves the trading post, and you come with him. He leads the way to the lift, chatting now and then about Town. "Boss Wathe's got plans, yes he does," he says at one point. "He's even talking to a fellow about putting in a Catacombs entrance. Town'll be the biggest, best thing in these parts."
At the bottom of the lift he heads, not toward Town, but at a northward tangent. After about twenty minutes' walking, he stops. "Be real still," he says.
He pulls out some kind of carved wooden whistle and blows into it. The resulting tone is not especially loud, but it does seem to carry. Many minutes pass. Tunks blows the whistle again.
A short time later, you hear a rustling in the bushes, and four kobolds appear. You recognize them immediately as members of the fierce Ss'Hathk tribe.
Tunks produces a medium-sized cloth bag, and hands it over. It doesn't clink or jingle, so you don't think it contains coins, but you're not sure what's in it. One of the kobolds opens it up, looks into it, sniffs briefly. He looks up at Tunks, showing teeth.
"Do it now," Tunks says. "Like Boss says, yes?"
"Yesss," says the kobold with the bag. "We go now. Kill humansss. Get more ss'kkaakkh."
"Ss'kkakkh comes from Boss," Tunks says. "You remember that. You want more ss'kkaakkh, you do what Boss says."
"Yessss," says the kobold again. They melt away into the bushes.
"Well, that's taken care of," says Tunks. "Come on; let's make for Town. I'll take you to Miss Sussy's; they'll give you a warm welcome."

Asteron dares to have a glimmer of hope. We may, just may, live to fight another day. Combat is still young, and none of their enemies has been brought down yet, but at least Ragnarök is up and defending himself. That makes the taur smile with relief. Imod, do not forsake us now.
A thought tugs at the back of the minotaur's mind, and he thanks his god, certain that it came from him. He calls forth the magic of the K'tthhykk Kobold Necklace first, knowing that if he goes down, his friends have little chance of survival. He then quickly surveys the battlefield, trying to locate any enemies heretofore unknown to the party. it would just not do to be stabbed in the back by a kobold thief hiding nearby.
Then he calls upon his diminishing reserves of energy, and swings his blade at the kobold he has wounded before. - - - - - OOC: Standard action - cast cure serious wounds from bead of healing [3d8+3]: 14hp healed Perception [d20+6]: 10 HERO POINT SPENT Attack [d20+10]: 16 Damage [3d6+7]: 19

Yngvar steps back and casts a spell. A cone of clashing colors springs from his hands, briefly enveloping kobolds 3 and 4. Kobold 3 seems unaffected, but kobold 4 stops and stares vacantly into space. (Kobold 4 is stunned for 1 round)
Ragnarök and his 3 mighty hit points stagger back into combat! [OOC: where did you move to? The only place near Asteron and the kobolds involves stepping into the Web at G-5. Or did you want to step back to F-7?]
Toregan switches to melee weapons and slashes at kobold 3, but misses.
Asteron remembers his necklace, and uses it to heal himself. [OOC: You took 16 damage last round, which took you to 0, so you were staggered, but could still cast your spell! Yay! But your hit point total should only be the 14 that you healed.]
Kobolds 1 and 2 continue their assault on Asteron. Kobold 1 misses, but kobold 2 just barely hits and does 8 points of damage.

Asteron is getting frustrated. This combat is not going the party's way, not by a long shot. At least, if we fall, we will fall doing our duty. No one will be able to take that from us He smiles grimly as one of the kobolds hits him.
Focusing on the combat at hand, he swings at the wounded kobold in front of him, trying to get rid of the walking lizard as quickly as possible. Then, again drawing on his almost exhausted reserve of energy, swings on the back slash, hoping to carry the fight by sheer force of will. You are bloodied but determined! You are not going down without a fight!
Asteron aims a blow at kobold 1, but misses. Once again, he digs deep for the last reserves of his energy to strike another blow. This one hits! Down goes kobold 1!
Yngvar calls for somebody to set the Web afire. He casts and Acid Arrow, which hits and does damage.
Ragnarök steps carefully around to face his opponent, only to find that Asteron had already dropped him. But a single step brings another opponent in range of Rag's fists, and he punches kobold 2 in the stomach.
Toregan takes advantage of the stunned shaman, sneak-attacking in fine rogue-y fashion.
Faust fires a Scorching Ray, but misses his target. [OOC: Dismissing a spell is a standard action. I know--total rip-off. The bad news is that Tunks seems to be feeling a bit better. He moves up to flank Toregan with kobold 3, and strikes out with his rapier. Tunks seems to know just where to sink the blade to do the most damage; Toregan takes 19 damage plus 4 cold damage.
Kobold 2 continues attacking Asteron, and hits for 8 damage.
Kobold 3 turns his attention to Faust, but he misses with a natural 1.

Asteron knows that if it wasn't for the rage, he would be down. Still, he's not one to go quietly into the night, so he bellows a challenge, a death threat even, before he attacks Tunks from the side with his large two handed sword.
Not content with this, he tries to rip the kobold next to him with an attack of his horns. Even though he has not much hope, who knows? He might graze the reptilian.
Now it comes to decision time. Should he spend his remaining energy on the attack, or in defense? His gut tells him to attack, and he follows his instinct, attacking Tunks once again with his enormous blade, knowing that it might be the last thing he ever does.

You don't know how many hours have passed when you awaken, but awaken you do. You are lying in the clearing. There is no sign of Tunks or the kobolds. You are alive. Your companions are also alive. Nobody, it seems, has made the trip to Gargul. At least, not yet.
You spend some time assuring yourselves that yes, you are all here, and yes, you are all still alive.
After a time, you notice the note, pinned to a tree with a dagger.
Boss said not to kill you, which is why you're still alive. You want to stay that way, you come to Town and apologize real nice-like. Maybe you get to live.
Or, you can go back to your stinking Trading Post and die with the worthless losers there. Your choice.

"By Imod! I feel like I have been trampled on by one of those really, really big giant lizards!" He spends the next few moments making sure nothing is broken, even though he feels like everything is. Then, as the note is read, his face hardens.
"I'd rather die rather than work for this 'Boss'. In fact, I was at peace with just that. Not that I have a death wish, but life without honor is worse than death!" His words drip rage. A deep, rolling, unforgiving rage. "We could not take this... Tunks this time, but one day he and I will meet, and only one of us will live to speak about it. The honor of the minotaurs demands it!"
As he finally gets up, he looks at his companions and asks, "So, what now? I vote for defending the outpost, but you have been good allies, maybe even friends. So I will listen to council on this. Cowardice dictates that I go to Town and submit. Honor demands that I defend the outpost, even if it means death. So, what council ye?"

"I mean, sure, I'm confident we can trade blows with the kobolds and stand victorious, add some traps around the outpost, something like that. You gather yourselves, and your composure, and take stock. You quickly realize that going to Town now would be a mistake--although Town will need to be dealt with at some point. Your best bet is to head back to the Trading Post.
So, back to the Trading Post you go. Your progress is perhaps a little slower than when you set out, but you are still strong adventurers, and it's going to take more than a near-death experience to stop you.
You reach the lift, and haul yourselves up to the top of the plateau. Before too much longer, you are back inside the palisade surrounding the Trading Post.

You give Pen a quick rundown on what happened. "Well. I'm glad you made it back in one piece!" he says.
It is just past noon, you discover, so you were unconscious for a couple of hours. And now, many of you would like to be unconscious again for a while, to rest and recover spells if possible.
Before that happens, though, you need to be healed of your wounds. Pen produces a Wand of Cure Light Wounds. "I have this on hand for emergencies," he explains, "which this seems to be. Er, you can use this, right?"
Toregan can, indeed use the wand, and he soon has everyone up to full health. Lunch is available from the inn if you are interested; otherwise, you can rest. Or at least, you can try. :)

You have a chance to rest after the noon meal. Toregan spends that time at the lookout post, watching for the attack you are sure to come. As the sun begins to go down, you get the feeling that there is something unusual happening, way out at the edge of the plateau. You can't tell what it is, exactly; there are trees and bushes in the way, but something about it feels...wrong. And then the sun sets, and darkness conceals whatever it is.
You are able to rest through the night, and recover spells the next morning. Still, as the sun comes up, you can't help but feel more battles lie ahead of you.

[Sorry, Pedro, but I had to post at halftime of the US/Panama World Cup qualifier, because there's no way I was missing the second half! :) ]
Faust was able to create a Web scroll during his down time.
When you hear the noise, Asteron wonders aloud whether there's any way to scout this. Ragnarök has anticipated him, however, and slipped out the gate to see what's what.
Rag soon sees, however, that he's not going to be able to outrun these critters. Indeed, they are moving as fast as he can move; his only option is to turn tail and run before they reach him.
Back at the post, then, the first thing you see is Ragnarök, sprinting hell-for-leather, shouting "Stampede!"
And behind him, indeed, comes a stampede of dinosaurs. Their appearance isn't terribly intimidating, but there are a lot of them, and they don't seem to be stopping!
All around you, the Post's defenders scramble to get ready, and the non-combatants scramble to get to safety. Will the dinosaurs stop when they reach the solid palisade around the Trading Post? It's hard to say, but from here, it looks unlikely.

DM Kathy Friday June 14th, 2013 2:20:20 AM
The Post's defenders manage to hold the gate open long enough for Ragnarök to dive through it, but it's a near thing. They barely get it closed and barred again in time.
Asteron calls for a fire, but there is no time to gather flammable materials. Toregan opens up with his arrows, as do a few other archers up in the towers. Faust is able to place a Web in the bushes and bracken right in front of the Post. It's not an especially good Web for tangling purposes, with no good anchor points, but it spreads nicely and should burn just fine.
Toregan and the other archers manage to account for a few of the dinosaurs, and a few more manage to turn aside before barreling into the wall. Most of the stampede, however, hits the wall at full speed. The entire Post seems to shudder as body after body slams into the wall. All around, people cry out and run, but there's really no safe place to run to. And the wall won't last much longer.

DM Kathy Sunday June 16th, 2013 8:44:11 PM
I don't think I've done a very good job of describing what's going on. The Trading Post, if you'll recall, looks like this. The dinosaurs came from the north, and are currently smashing into the palisade, which is the row of little brown circles between Watch Tower 1 and Watch Tower 2.
A palisade looks like this. It's not so much a wall as a series of poles sunk into the ground. Although the Trading Post has watch towers, there isn't really a way to get up on the palisade; there isn't a walkway or anything. A nimble person might try to climb up and balance there, but there are dinosaurs battering themselves against the palisade and shaking the whole thing, so it would be very difficult to stay up there.
So. The Trading Post's defense is a row of poles sunk into the ground, and right now dinosaurs are hurling themselves against it. They have not (yet) battered their way in, although they might. Since the palisade isn't a solid wall, I'm going to say that you can cast spells or even shoot arrows through it, although right now all you can see is the dinosaurs immediately in front of the palisade. You wouldn't be able to lob a distance spell because you can't see that far.
The best way to see over the wall is to climb up one of the watch towers.
It is certainly possible to fall back and try to defend one or more of the buildings, on the assumption that the dinosaurs will break through eventually, but it might be a better idea to try to stop as many as possible at the palisade. Of course, that's up to you guys.
So, knowing all that stuff, I'd like everybody to re-state their actions. :) If you still want to do the same thing, that's fine; if you want to change, that's fine, too. I just wanted to be sure we all understood what was happening, because I get the sense I didn't describe it very well.

And shoot at those pressing into the palisade, especially near the middle of it. Let those that are avoiding the Outpost go!" It might help, it might not, but it seems a good idea to tell the archers what to do.
Then he yells to the non-combatants, [b]"Go to the inn, to the second floor, and barricade yourselves there. Do it NOW! You will be safe!" He urges women and children in particular to do so quickly.
As Ragnarök suggests that they open the gate, he replies, "Not a bad idea, except for the palisade to the south! But maybe if we breach a section while everybody clears the streets, and we funnel them southwards, after everyone is safe, it could work." Yngvar had cast Sleet Storm, which has a radius of 40' and a range of long. I had originally cast it at range, but if the dino's are already at the gate, then I'll bring it in much closer.
Yngvar is in the northwest tower, and he casts the spell to have its edges just overlapping the palisade and just missing the tower he is in, with the bulk of the area in front of the wall on the west side coated.
DM Kathy Monday June 17th, 2013 9:02:11 PM Ragnarök shakes his head to clear it, but this is really happening, and disbelieving doesn't make the dinosaurs go away. He urges everyone away from the north wall, but really, that's unnecessary. Civilians are fleeing southward. Rag also suggests opening the gate and letting the dinos through the post, except there's no gate on the south wall.
Asteron suggests a refinement, knocking down the south palisade. That may be tricky; the palisades are sturdy and not meant to come down easily. Asteron also shouts at the civilians to get to the second floor of the inn. Some obey; some either don't hear him or are too frightened. There's a lot of screaming and running.
From atop one of the towers, Yngvar casts a Sleet Storm, placing it on the western part of the north wall. The dinosaurs don't have the sense to stop running. They slip and fall, get up and try to run, then slip and fall some more.
One of the archers manages to put a flaming arrow into the Web. Although the burning Web is arguably less troublesome to the dinosaurs than the Sleet Storm, it is a lot more visible and dangerous to their tiny dinosaur brains. They bellow and turn from it.
So, between the Sleet Storm and the Web, the assaults on the western and central parts of the palisade have all but stopped. That's the good news. The bad news is that the eastern part of the wall is now taking a tremendous battering--and the palisade is beginning to fail. Crack! Crack! Crack! Individual poles, and then a whole section of the palisade, give way. The watchtower falls, taking screaming archers with it. A few dinosaurs break through and keep running, toward the Administration building.

Casting a Fireball at a random point in space to the southeast of the Administration Building, in hopes of scaring the beasts into a semi-ordered manner to either turn tail and leave or towards the gate.
Reeeeeally hope this works.

Ragnarok stands in awe as the dino's come crawling in through the pallisades now trashing houses inside the compound. But at the samen moment the Monk is oblivious to what he could possibly do to stop this stampede...
All he can do is to make sure no children get hurt by the crazed animals. He helps to get people out of harms way while the magic wielders come up with some nifty spells that seem to do the trick.

Asteron springs into action, gathering as many young ones as he can in his arms, and any light elderly persons that he can too. Once he has as many as he can carry or can cling to him, he intends to haul them to the inn's entrance, and safety. This is one fight where brain will win over brawn. I must let those that are smarter than me deal with this threat.
Not that Asteron is dumb. The fact that he speaks common attest to it. In fact, it is his measure of intellect that leads him to rescue those he can, and not oppose that which he can't... at least not successfully.

Faust quickly sees that the dinosaurs don't like fire, and tries to "herd" them out of the Post by placing a Fireball in their path. Placing it is tricky; there are still a lot of civilians running around. Finally, Faust "airbursts" his Fireball, so that it explodes in mid-air above and in front of the advancing beasts. They bellow in fear and try to turn aside.
Toregan is able to further discourage them with arrows. The dinosaurs stop coming through the gap in the palisade.
Meanwhile, Ragnarök and Faust help get the civilians to relative safety; in some cases, physically picking them up and carrying them.
The few dinosaurs remaining inside the Trading Post turn and try to go out through the gap in the palisade. A couple of them make it out, but one of them brushes against a leaning section of the fence, causing it to fall across the opening. Three of the dinosaurs are now trapped in the Trading Post, bellowing and thrashing about in confusion.
[This is the part where I'd link to a map, but I don't think I'm going to be able to do a map tonight. Just do the best you can, and I'll see how I feel tomorrow. Stupid cold.]

The stampede seems to have turned; the dinos are now heading east, the stragglers running along beside the palisade. Something--a tail, probably--thumps into the gate, but it holds. You think that, barring anything unforeseen, no more dinos will be coming inside the wall. Which is kind of nice, because three are bad enough.
Ragnarök hopes to discourage the dinosaurs without killing them. He runs up to the first one, provoking an attack of opportunity, which hits but doesn't crit. Rag takes 16 damage. His own strike hits its target, who staggers, shakes its head, and keeps on going [Fort save 16].

Faust uses his empathic link to urge Wolfgang into giving a very rough estimate of how many enemies are there and where are they coming from, though Faust does keep his eyes glued to the hole on the wall, expecting that to be their entry point.
He moves close to the rest of the group and cast Mage Armor on himself, "Once we've confirmed their entry point, I plan on trying to blind them and then softening as many as possible with another round of Fireball, so try to keep them crowded together and without any of us in their midst.", he whispers to the group, checking if his permanent flame ring is in position and ready to be used for a spell.

Hearing that more foes are on the way, Ragnarök digs out a couple of curing potions, one for him, and one for Asteron.
Yngvar gathers his friends--not too difficult, since they haven't moved far--and casts a Haste on them.
Asteron drinks his potion.
Toregan moves closer to Rag and taps him with the wand. He also tells Nudge to head for the Admin building, but the little gnome is already scrambling out of the way.
Faust moves closer and protects himself with a Mage Armor. He asks Wolfgang for an assessment of how many enemies there are. Since Wolfgang is a familiar, I'm going to say he's smart enough to count, so you know that there are 4 of them.
And, as Faust surmised, they seem to be heading for the big hole that the dinosaurs knocked in the palisade. True, dinosaurs couldn't get through it once it got blocked off again--but kobolds are much smaller, and you realize that there are any number of ways they could worm their way into the trading post.
But first, they stop outside the opening, and three of them raise blowguns to their lips. Faust is hit by a little dart for 1 point of damage; Yngvar is hit for 2 points of damage.
And the map. The kobolds are in columns N, O, P, and Q, just off the map to the north.

You discuss your options.
Yngvar wonders about "the druid." If you mean Zyk, he was part of the group that was sent to repair Waystation 10. He should be back in a few days. Of course, the dinosaurs will certainly be awake by then.
Faust says that perhaps the dinos could just be turned into tasty dino steaks. Of course, you already have one dino that is already dead, and it's pretty big. Can the Post handle meat from two more?
Aside from the dinosaur issue, there is the kobold issue. Should you free him? Kill him? Turn him over to Auntie? Auntie's village is a couple of days' travel away; who would escort the kobold there.
As you converse, Toregan steps into the Admin office, where Pen is talking to a shaken Nudge. Toregan gives the news of the battle, and Pen nods solemnly. "I was afraid that something had happened when he didn't come in with Nudge," he says. He sighs. "Somebody will have to break the news to Klairiest. I suppose that's me."
Outside, the group continues to discuss options.

[Everybody take 2500 XP for the last scene. Good job!]
Faust is of the opinion that training dinosaurs would be a good project for the Trading Post, eventually. Now, however, may not be the best time for it.
Faust and Asteron want to interrogate the surviving kobold before doing anything else with him.
Yngvar says he can "funnel" the dinosaurs out of the Trading Post using illusory walls. He also has some ideas for improving the defenses.
Ragnarök checks the kobolds' gear. Most of it is pretty standard stuff, sized for Small creatures. The spellcaster, however, had some additional items: two wands, a vial of some kind of liquid, a crystal lens, and a pouch filled with gemstones.
(Jorge) Asteron Worldtraveller AC 19/11/17 -- CMD 24 -- HP 28/52 -- Rage 12/20 Tuesday July 9th, 2013 1:14:42 PM "I bet 10 gold that the pouch is the payment for what the outpost just went through", says the minotaur. "And we all know where it came from. They underestimated us this time, but I wonder if they will be foolish enough to do so again. One thing I am certain of: they will not cease until the Outpost is no more, or we get rid of them once and for all."
Asteron suddenly feels very tired. What will it take for this to end? That is what we must find out, and the sooner, the better.
But first things first. "We need to get rid of the two lizzards. Let's open the doors for them, so they can go out, and Yngvar may help with his illusions. But we also want to follow them to find out how they got up here. We need to seal that tunnel, which is what I bet is how they herded against the Outpost."

Yngvar finds a comfortable perch on top of one of the buildings. Once the dino starts to wake up, he casts silent image of a large stone wall in a U shape to provide the funnel. I can make 9 10' cubes. Do they need to be connected?
Isn't the top of the mesa several hundred feet above the surrounding terrain? That's weeks of tunneling.

Pleased that someone takes care of the items they found Rag turns to help with repairing or escorting the Dino's out of the Post. Happy they won't be slain he hopes they live a prosperous life out there in the jungle.
DM Kathy Tuesday July 9th, 2013 9:56:02 PM Asteron helps open the Trading Post's gate for when the dinosaurs wake up. Not surprisingly, the gate's hinges have been knocked a little askew; it's hard to open and close them. More repair work to be done.
Yngvar finds a comfortable vantage point and casts his illusion. It seems, however, that these dinosaurs don't rely as much on their eyesight. They don't really seem fooled by the wall.
Fortunately, however, when they're not in a panicky stampede, these dinosaurs seem to be pretty docile. With the assistance of Ragnarök, and others from the Post, you are at last able to persuade, cajole, chivvy, and sometimes just push, the dinosaurs out of the gate. The gate is shut behind them.
Left to their own devices, the dinosaurs mill about, looking confused, and eventually settle down to eating some bushes. If you plan to follow them to find out how they got up here, you're going to need some patience.
Meanwhile, Faust is looking over the items recovered from the kobold caster. He knows that the first wand is a Wand of Burning Hands, but can't figure out the second one. The liquid is an Elixir of Hiding. He's not sure about the lens. The gems are non-magical.

Toregan heals up Nudge with the wand a few more times before leaving the building. At the entrance, he lets out a long sigh before heading back to the group."I agree Ygnvar. Better walls and a spiked trench will help. If this post has to end up being a fort in order to survive, then so be it."
He turns to face Asteron with a puzzled expression on his face. "Why would we want to follow them? In all likelihood they were actually living up here on the plateau when these rats scared them into a stampede. I don't see how a ground this large could stick together in dense jungle, even with a druid leading them."
Looking at one the unconcious dinos, Toregan shrugs. "I could always try to train one, but I don't really have much skill in that regard. When I say try, I mean try and likely fail. My abilities lie in letting animals understand that we mean no harm, though I'm not even very good at that."
He then goes over to the ruins of the watchtower and picks up the body of Borcht. "I'm going to bring him to the church. He deserves his rites."

Faust looks at the items he couldn't figure out one last time to be sure, but still fails and ends up giving them to Yngvar, hoping he'll have better luck figuring it out.
With the outpost's mood being rather bittersweet, the drow keeps mostly to himself, spending his time trying not to look too detached but mostly thinking about ways to improve the outpost, such as better walls, the idea for a dinosaur training area and the such.

[So, I gave 2500 xp for the last scene, with the kobolds. Then I realized I neglected to give you xp for the scene before that; the actual stampede. So that's another 2000 xp, for a total of 4500.]
Toregan agrees that the Trading Post defenses could use some work. He also speculates that the dinosaurs may live atop this plateau.
[I hate to prompt veteran players, but knowing about dinosaurs would be a Knowledge: Nature check. :) ]
Toregan gathers up Borscht's body and takes it to the temple.
With the help of some others at the Post, Ragnarök and Asteron are able to make temporary repairs to the part of the palisade the dinosaurs knocked over. The Administration building will need repairs, too, but everyone agrees the palisade is a priority.
A sudden commotion draws your attention, and you turn to see a grief-stricken Klairiest, being escorted to the temple by Gazzy and Polly. For once, cheerful Polly looks sorrowful, and Klairiest is weeping loud enough for everyone to hear. She catches sight of your group and points an accusing finger. "You!" she says, somewhere between a shout and a sob. "You are supposed to protect us! You're supposed to help! Where were you!"
Gazzy and Polly try to soothe her, you hear them saying things like, "they did their best," and "they saved a lot of lives today," but the grief-stricken Klairiest isn't ready to hear that. Slowly, the trio makes their way to the temple. A somber mood descends on the Trading Post.

Realizing that there were a lot more dinosaurs that missed the outpost, Yngvar walks over to the cliff and looks down, trying to see if he can determine how many dino's stampeded off the edge.

Asteron says, to no one in particular: "Borscht died a noble death, defending this Outpost from an unwarranted attack. Cursed kobolds! To kill helpless people for a bag of gems is beneath the lowest of the low." As Klairiest lets her grief pour out, the Minotaur clenches his fists, and bows his head. He know that there is nothing he can say that will ease her pain, as much as he would like to be able to take it upon himself.
Then, still thinking that the dinosaurs were moved up to the plateau, and were not originally from there, he decides to make a quick check, just in case. He'd leave a more thorough investigation until after the interrogation... an interrogation that, for once, he was looking forward to be not polite in.
"Hold the kobold until I get back. Then I'll need an interpreter. One that will see me angrier than any of you have seen me before. Oh, yes..." The taur knew that he could be terrifying to someone the size of the kobold... and he was going to do his best to be the creature's worst nightmare incarnate.

I'm 1650 from 6th
DM Kathy Friday July 12th, 2013 1:10:23 AM Yngvar can tell that the second wand is a Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds. He is unsure about the lens.
He also knows that the stampeding dinosaurs were pachycephalosauruses. They are generally peaceful plant-eaters, but they're still pretty big and pack quite a wallop. Yngvar can also tell that there probably isn't enough plant material up her on the plateau to support the total number of dinosaurs that were in the stampede. It's always possible, of course, that the herd just happened to come up here looking for fresh browse, and the kobolds took advantage of their presence. But that seems unlikely.
Asteron gives instructions to hold the captured kobold, then goes to see what he can tell from the tracks of the stampede. The trail is, of course, very easy to follow. It leads off, out of sight of the Trading Post. Do you continue to follow?
Ragnarök stays out of the way of the grieving Klairiest, who is soon escorted into the temple.
Looking over the cliff, you can see that quite a few dinosaurs fell to their deaths.

Borscht's funeral won't be for a while. His body must be prepared and laid out, and a grave dug. Doubtless, Rexxann has preparations of her own to make. You are probably not needed for a few hours at least.
That being the case, you gather your things and head out the gate, tracking the stampede back to its origin. The trail of the stampede is, of course, completely obvious; a child could follow it. As you approach the northern edge of the bluff, however, the trail becomes less obvious. The stampede probably started somewhere around here, but it may take an expert's eye to tell exactly what happened.

You look around at the place where the stampede started, and you are able to piece together what happened.
It is Toregan who finds the trail leading from the mesa to the jungle floor. It is steep and winding, but it is wide enough--barely--for the dinosaurs to have ascended it. The mystery is how the Ss'Hathk persuaded them to do it.
Faust puts his mind to it and comes up with a theory that's as good as any. Perhaps the Ss'Hathk had procured some kind of food--a plant or a fruit--that the dinos really, really like, and used it to coax them up here. These dinosaurs had seemed to be herd animals, so they really only would have had to get a few moving; the rest would just follow.
Yngvar's...um...evidence further confirms this; those appear to be fruit seeds. Though nobody wants to get close enough to really check.
It is Asteron who finds the first blowgun darts. Once you know what you're looking for, the rest of you are quickly able to find more. It seems clear that the kobolds, once they had the dinosaurs up on the plateau, caused the stampede by shooting blowgun darts--and possibly making loud noises at the same time.

Faust sends Wolfgang to scout. The owl, rather grouchy in the daytime, flies down the trail and is soon out of sight. Over his link to Faust, he reports that the trail is clear and he sees no sign of any kobolds.
You set about to thinking how to destroy the trail. Of course, that's easier said than done. You can't very well scrape it off the side of the bluff. You might be able to get a couple of big boulders to seal off the top of the trail. It probably wouldn't prevent nimble little kobolds from coming up that way, but it would prevent anything larger.
Of course, moving big heavy boulders into place will require some assistance.

You take a look at the possible tasks in front of you, then remember that you've already fought two pitched battles today--and you have a funeral to attend. You have discovered how the Ss'Hathk got the dinosaurs up here, and it appears there is no more danger from that quarter, for the time being.
Besides, you realize that if you block off the trail, it might not be a bad idea to get the remaining two living dinosaurs back to the jungle floor before you do it.
Accordingly, you make your way back to the Trading Post, to report your findings to Pen. He listens to you, and nods. "I think my preference would be for trapping the trail," he says. "That would allow us to use it in an emergency. But I trust your judgement on this; you must do as you think best."
You still have several hours before Borcht's funeral. You are able to get cleaned up, grab a bite to eat, and use Pen's wand to heal your wounds.
The funeral takes place at sunset. It is a beautiful, but somber, affair. Nearly everyone at the Post speaks of Borcht's kindness, his talents, his bravery, his determination. Klairiest is too overcome to speak, but the words of praise for her brother seem to give her comfort.

[Everybody take 300 XP for this last scene. The next scene, the first of the new module, will be run by ADM Steven. I will change the module and scene titles on Sunday, so get your posts in before then. :) ]
(Jorge) Asteron Worldtraveller AC 19/11/17 -- CMD 24 -- HP 52/52 -- Rage 12/20 Friday July 19th, 2013 1:28:54 PM
After the funeral is over, Asteron gathers the team, and asks, "what do you think? Do we wait until they attack again or do we pay them a visit? I had thought it better to wait, but with Borcht's death, I am not so sure anymore. It may be better if we take the initiative. The one thing that worries me, is that at least I cannot disguise myself. Any group with a minotaur among them will immediately stand out as it approaches Town. Any ideas?"
- - - - - OOC: have we divided the loot amongst the group, particularly the bag of gems?

Ragnarök nods as Asteron voices his ideas to head out and confront this Boss Wathe... "I tend to agree with you master Asteron..."
(Ooc no I don't think we distributed the loot yet)
(Ezra, the Second) Yngvar Hefnd AC 14{18}/14{18}/12{16} -- CMD 13 -- HP 29/31 Saturday July 20th, 2013 12:04:50 AM I urge caution, if his last representative was any indication of what forces he has available to him, it would be suicidal to attempt any confrontation at this stage. Developing our relationships with the surrounding indigenous tribes and securing the top of the mesa will provide for the immediate security of the Outpost. Had we not been here today, I do not think the outpost would have survived. Yngvar paused, surprised at his outburst. But he had been hired to protect the outpost, this seemed a time when the protection was needed much closer to home.
(Jorge) Asteron Worldtraveller AC 19/11/17 -- CMD 24 -- HP 52/52 -- Rage 12/20 Saturday July 20th, 2013 12:49:58 PM "Master Yngvar, you have a point there. If we had not been here, the Outpost would have been devastated. Problem is, next time we might not be enough. My teachers of strategy used to tell me that the best defense is a good offense."
The taur pauses for a moment, before adding, "This might be the time to interrogate our new prisoner. What do you think?"
