[Everybody take 2500 XP for the last scene. Good job!]

Faust is of the opinion that training dinosaurs would be a good project for the Trading Post, eventually. Now, however, may not be the best time for it.

Faust and Asteron want to interrogate the surviving kobold before doing anything else with him.

Yngvar says he can "funnel" the dinosaurs out of the Trading Post using illusory walls. He also has some ideas for improving the defenses.

Ragnarök checks the kobolds' gear. Most of it is pretty standard stuff, sized for Small creatures. The spellcaster, however, had some additional items: two wands, a vial of some kind of liquid, a crystal lens, and a pouch filled with gemstones.

"I bet 10 gold that the pouch is the payment for what the outpost just went through", says the minotaur. "And we all know where it came from. They underestimated us this time, but I wonder if they will be foolish enough to do so again. One thing I am certain of: they will not cease until the Outpost is no more, or we get rid of them once and for all."

Asteron suddenly feels very tired. What will it take for this to end? That is what we must find out, and the sooner, the better.

But first things first. "We need to get rid of the two lizzards. Let's open the doors for them, so they can go out, and Yngvar may help with his illusions. But we also want to follow them to find out how they got up here. We need to seal that tunnel, which is what I bet is how they herded against the Outpost."

Yngvar finds a comfortable perch on top of one of the buildings. Once the dino starts to wake up, he casts silent image of a large stone wall in a U shape to provide the funnel. I can make 9 10' cubes. Do they need to be connected?

Isn't the top of the mesa several hundred feet above the surrounding terrain? That's weeks of tunneling.

Asteron helps open the Trading Post's gate for when the dinosaurs wake up. Not surprisingly, the gate's hinges have been knocked a little askew; it's hard to open and close them. More repair work to be done.

Yngvar finds a comfortable vantage point and casts his illusion. It seems, however, that these dinosaurs don't rely as much on their eyesight. They don't really seem fooled by the wall.

Fortunately, however, when they're not in a panicky stampede, these dinosaurs seem to be pretty docile. With the assistance of Ragnarök, and others from the Post, you are at last able to persuade, cajole, chivvy, and sometimes just push, the dinosaurs out of the gate. The gate is shut behind them.

Left to their own devices, the dinosaurs mill about, looking confused, and eventually settle down to eating some bushes. If you plan to follow them to find out how they got up here, you're going to need some patience.

Meanwhile, Faust is looking over the items recovered from the kobold caster. He knows that the first wand is a Wand of Burning Hands, but can't figure out the second one. The liquid is an Elixir of Hiding. He's not sure about the lens. The gems are non-magical.

Toregan heals up Nudge with the wand a few more times before leaving the building. At the entrance, he lets out a long sigh before heading back to the group."I agree Ygnvar. Better walls and a spiked trench will help. If this post has to end up being a fort in order to survive, then so be it."

He turns to face Asteron with a puzzled expression on his face. "Why would we want to follow them? In all likelihood they were actually living up here on the plateau when these rats scared them into a stampede. I don't see how a ground this large could stick together in dense jungle, even with a druid leading them."

Looking at one the unconcious dinos, Toregan shrugs. "I could always try to train one, but I don't really have much skill in that regard. When I say try, I mean try and likely fail. My abilities lie in letting animals understand that we mean no harm, though I'm not even very good at that."

He then goes over to the ruins of the watchtower and picks up the body of Borcht. "I'm going to bring him to the church. He deserves his rites."

[So, I gave 2500 xp for the last scene, with the kobolds. Then I realized I neglected to give you xp for the scene before that; the actual stampede. So that's another 2000 xp, for a total of 4500.]

Toregan agrees that the Trading Post defenses could use some work. He also speculates that the dinosaurs may live atop this plateau.

[I hate to prompt veteran players, but knowing about dinosaurs would be a Knowledge: Nature check. :) ]

Toregan gathers up Borscht's body and takes it to the temple.

With the help of some others at the Post, Ragnarök and Asteron are able to make temporary repairs to the part of the palisade the dinosaurs knocked over. The Administration building will need repairs, too, but everyone agrees the palisade is a priority.

A sudden commotion draws your attention, and you turn to see a grief-stricken Klairiest, being escorted to the temple by Gazzy and Polly. For once, cheerful Polly looks sorrowful, and Klairiest is weeping loud enough for everyone to hear. She catches sight of your group and points an accusing finger. "You!" she says, somewhere between a shout and a sob. "You are supposed to protect us! You're supposed to help! Where were you!"

Gazzy and Polly try to soothe her, you hear them saying things like, "they did their best," and "they saved a lot of lives today," but the grief-stricken Klairiest isn't ready to hear that. Slowly, the trio makes their way to the temple. A somber mood descends on the Trading Post.

Asteron says, to no one in particular: "Borscht died a noble death, defending this Outpost from an unwarranted attack. Cursed kobolds! To kill helpless people for a bag of gems is beneath the lowest of the low." As Klairiest lets her grief pour out, the Minotaur clenches his fists, and bows his head. He know that there is nothing he can say that will ease her pain, as much as he would like to be able to take it upon himself.

Then, still thinking that the dinosaurs were moved up to the plateau, and were not originally from there, he decides to make a quick check, just in case. He'd leave a more thorough investigation until after the interrogation... an interrogation that, for once, he was looking forward to be not polite in.

"Hold the kobold until I get back. Then I'll need an interpreter. One that will see me angrier than any of you have seen me before. Oh, yes..." The taur knew that he could be terrifying to someone the size of the kobold... and he was going to do his best to be the creature's worst nightmare incarnate.

Yngvar can tell that the second wand is a Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds. He is unsure about the lens.

He also knows that the stampeding dinosaurs were pachycephalosauruses. They are generally peaceful plant-eaters, but they're still pretty big and pack quite a wallop. Yngvar can also tell that there probably isn't enough plant material up her on the plateau to support the total number of dinosaurs that were in the stampede. It's always possible, of course, that the herd just happened to come up here looking for fresh browse, and the kobolds took advantage of their presence. But that seems unlikely.

Asteron gives instructions to hold the captured kobold, then goes to see what he can tell from the tracks of the stampede. The trail is, of course, very easy to follow. It leads off, out of sight of the Trading Post. Do you continue to follow?

Ragnarök stays out of the way of the grieving Klairiest, who is soon escorted into the temple.

Looking over the cliff, you can see that quite a few dinosaurs fell to their deaths.

Borscht's funeral won't be for a while. His body must be prepared and laid out, and a grave dug. Doubtless, Rexxann has preparations of her own to make. You are probably not needed for a few hours at least.

That being the case, you gather your things and head out the gate, tracking the stampede back to its origin. The trail of the stampede is, of course, completely obvious; a child could follow it. As you approach the northern edge of the bluff, however, the trail becomes less obvious. The stampede probably started somewhere around here, but it may take an expert's eye to tell exactly what happened.

You look around at the place where the stampede started, and you are able to piece together what happened.

It is Toregan who finds the trail leading from the mesa to the jungle floor. It is steep and winding, but it is wide enough--barely--for the dinosaurs to have ascended it. The mystery is how the Ss'Hathk persuaded them to do it.

Faust puts his mind to it and comes up with a theory that's as good as any. Perhaps the Ss'Hathk had procured some kind of food--a plant or a fruit--that the dinos really, really like, and used it to coax them up here. These dinosaurs had seemed to be herd animals, so they really only would have had to get a few moving; the rest would just follow.

Yngvar's...um...evidence further confirms this; those appear to be fruit seeds. Though nobody wants to get close enough to really check.

It is Asteron who finds the first blowgun darts. Once you know what you're looking for, the rest of you are quickly able to find more. It seems clear that the kobolds, once they had the dinosaurs up on the plateau, caused the stampede by shooting blowgun darts--and possibly making loud noises at the same time.

Yngvar proposes setting off at once to map the new trail, but the rest of you advise caution.

Faust sends Wolfgang to scout. The owl, rather grouchy in the daytime, flies down the trail and is soon out of sight. Over his link to Faust, he reports that the trail is clear and he sees no sign of any kobolds.

You set about to thinking how to destroy the trail. Of course, that's easier said than done. You can't very well scrape it off the side of the bluff. You might be able to get a couple of big boulders to seal off the top of the trail. It probably wouldn't prevent nimble little kobolds from coming up that way, but it would prevent anything larger.

Of course, moving big heavy boulders into place will require some assistance.

You take a look at the possible tasks in front of you, then remember that you've already fought two pitched battles today--and you have a funeral to attend. You have discovered how the Ss'Hathk got the dinosaurs up here, and it appears there is no more danger from that quarter, for the time being.

Besides, you realize that if you block off the trail, it might not be a bad idea to get the remaining two living dinosaurs back to the jungle floor before you do it.

Accordingly, you make your way back to the Trading Post, to report your findings to Pen. He listens to you, and nods. "I think my preference would be for trapping the trail," he says. "That would allow us to use it in an emergency. But I trust your judgement on this; you must do as you think best."

You still have several hours before Borcht's funeral. You are able to get cleaned up, grab a bite to eat, and use Pen's wand to heal your wounds.

The funeral takes place at sunset. It is a beautiful, but somber, affair. Nearly everyone at the Post speaks of Borcht's kindness, his talents, his bravery, his determination. Klairiest is too overcome to speak, but the words of praise for her brother seem to give her comfort.

Ragnarok remains silent. Casualties were made on both sides... neither deserved to die... the Post mourns one of their ow... who weeps for the fallen Kobolds? What burriel ceremony will they be honored with? What dinosaur youngling is now left alone out there in the wild prone to be attacked...

The Monk is not the best diplomat so his words would probably come out bad.... so he just waits for the ceremony to end.

(Pedro) Faust Havler Tavir'e AC 17/13/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 9/30 // Wolfgang AC 18/16/14 -- CMD 13 -- HP 15/15

Faust uses Pretidigitation to get his outfit properly cleaned as well as pump some of its faded colors back to make it look better suited for the occasion.

He doesn't speak much, but does give his condolences and speaks a bit about Borcht if asked to, though he wasn't exactly close to him.

You attend the funeral, offer you condolences, and in some cases, speak for the deceased.

That sad duty done, you begin looking to the future. Clearly, this Boss Wathe person needs to be dealt with. And, judging from the lengths he's willing to go to, it should be sooner rather than later. Grimly, you gather yourselves for the task ahead.

[Everybody take 300 XP for this last scene. The next scene, the first of the new module, will be run by ADM Steven. I will change the module and scene titles on Sunday, so get your posts in before then. :) ]

After the funeral is over, Asteron gathers the team, and asks, "what do you think? Do we wait until they attack again or do we pay them a visit? I had thought it better to wait, but with Borcht's death, I am not so sure anymore. It may be better if we take the initiative. The one thing that worries me, is that at least I cannot disguise myself. Any group with a minotaur among them will immediately stand out as it approaches Town. Any ideas?"

OOC: have we divided the loot amongst the group, particularly the bag of gems?

Ragnarök nods as Asteron voices his ideas to head out and confront this Boss Wathe...
"I tend to agree with you master Asteron..."

(Ooc no I don't think we distributed the loot yet)

(Ezra, the Second) Yngvar Hefnd AC 14{18}/14{18}/12{16} -- CMD 13 -- HP 29/31

I urge caution, if his last representative was any indication of what forces he has available to him, it would be suicidal to attempt any confrontation at this stage. Developing our relationships with the surrounding indigenous tribes and securing the top of the mesa will provide for the immediate security of the Outpost. Had we not been here today, I do not think the outpost would have survived. Yngvar paused, surprised at his outburst. But he had been hired to protect the outpost, this seemed a time when the protection was needed much closer to home.

"Master Yngvar, you have a point there. If we had not been here, the Outpost would have been devastated. Problem is, next time we might not be enough. My teachers of strategy used to tell me that the best defense is a good offense."

The taur pauses for a moment, before adding, "This might be the time to interrogate our new prisoner. What do you think?"
