Return to the mainland - DM Mark
Sunday July 14th, 2013 8:32:31 AM

Mother listens patiently as the Harvest reels off more questions but looks puzzled with the last. "The greenskins do not have wings" she replies slowly, not grasping Harvest's question. "The messenger came 20 days ago, with the greenskins arriving the following day. Every third day they have come. Different times of day but always with force, there is no subtlety to their assaults. They charge in make their kill and retreat. Only the greenskins, not the giants."

Gerox listens and suggests to the team's hard hitters that they should look for an ambush spot or other way to thin out enemy numbers before pressing mother for additional information about the messenger.
Young mother responds"Now that i think about it, he wore a symbol around his neck. Three vertical bars side by side, all equal size. It was in gold, on a chain."

Barratore like the idea of am an ambush and waits for Brom, who seems less than impressed at being given instructions. The two warriors turn to leave the tent but are cut off by Edson who has better things to do then listen to Harvest and Gerox's questions. His exit is halted however by Hert, who has stopped in the door.

The site of ambush seems like a good idea and Barratore will turn and head out of the building and to the main trail they came in on. Pulling his bow and knowing Brom to be better at this than he is, Barratore stops and waits for Brom to take the lead. Barratore does what he can to help, which is to say, nothing

Hert grows tired of the conversation and walks to the door. Breathing deep of the fresh jungle air he looks out at the catfolk. Many are bustling around, or heading to their huts. Looking up there is a hint of smoke in the air and an odd shaped bird heading this way.... getting larger...

============================================

The meeting with mother is cut short as a boulder crashes through the wall of the keep, spraying stones throughout. The Boulder bounces between you but luckily does not strike anyone. everyone except Hert Reflex Save DC 18 or take 1d6 damage from rock shards!

A horn sounds and a chorus of warcries echo into the valley and through the demolished wall of the keep.

The large boulder strikes the tent and Brom is sprayed with small shards of rocks. Brom draws his bow as he moves out to spot their attacker (Perception DC16)

Brom's at W22.

Spotting a large humanoid approaching the village, Brom sends an arrow at the large fellow. The arrow misses but has range.

There is something. Something she heard. Harvest Moon fishes for what it is that she recalls about a symbol of three bars, straight up and down, worn from a chain about the neck. Deep within this thought, she nearly misses the small detail of Mother's description. "Giants." She said "giants." Meaning more than one giant.

When the stone comes, Harvest Moon reacts quickly. She throws the folds of her over sized sleeves up to protect her face, and feels it catch a few shards of rock. Then she dashes outside. It is big. As big as Barratore Steelwind. If Mother's description is correct, they will all come from that direction. Harvest Moon calls upon the madness of the plants again. She places the blessing of the earth such that the most forward edge catches the big giant. Hopefully, this will prevent the throwing of more big stones, until some of the League Adventurers can close with them.

(saving throw 24 natural 20) He darts out of the tent with the others and before the group can scatter to much casts his new spell haste. He is able to get six of his comrades with the spell. He includes Brom, Barratore, Harvest, Peza, Hert and Edsel in on the spell, leaving himself off for now.

spells used for the day
1/8 first
0/6 2nd

School transmutation; Level bard 3, sorcerer/wizard 3
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a shaving of licorice root)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets one creature/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw Fortitude negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
The transmuted creatures move and act more quickly than normal. This extra speed has several effects.

When making a full attack action, a hasted creature may make one extra attack with one natural or manufactured weapon. The attack is made using the creature's full base attack bonus, plus any modifiers appropriate to the situation. (This effect is not cumulative with similar effects, such as that provided by a speed weapon, nor does it actually grant an extra action, so you can't use it to cast a second spell or otherwise take an extra action in the round.)

A hasted creature gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves. Any condition that makes you lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) also makes you lose dodge bonuses.

All of the hasted creature's modes of movement (including land movement, burrow, climb, fly, and swim) increase by 30 feet, to a maximum of twice the subject's normal speed using that form of movement. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for increased speed. Multiple haste effects don't stack. Haste dispels and counters slow.

Hert AC 24(23ff 11t) HP 37/47 CMD 16(15ff)
Monday July 15th, 2013 10:14:39 AM

Hert is the only one to notice the strange shadow approaching. As it grows larger and larger, Hert realizes the danger; he understands he should warn everyone but is completely paralyzed by panic. Still and helpless, he watches the boulder hit the wall.

The sound of the crash breaks Hert out of his trance. He raises his shield just in time to protect himself from the rock shards. Squinting his eyes, he tries to count the shadows of the adventurers in the smoke. It appears that everyone is alive and mostly unharmed. Moreover, everyone seems to be preparing for a fight already.

Hert decides to make his preparations too. He kneels and touches his holy symbol. His prayer is short and straight to the point:

"O Lord of Life and Death, I beg you to help me save the lives of the innocent and punish those who dare to disturb your order."

His holy symbol starts glowing, giving divine power to him and the other adventurers. He then rushes to follow Barratore into the heart of the battle. He moves at surprising speed and even manages to outrun the taur, despite wearing full plate armor.

OOC: Hert casts Prayer. Remember, to be affected by it you need to stay in 40-ft radius
Prayer 5/5 rounds
Hert also runs 60ft. towards the Hill Giant.

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Harvest tries to recall any info about the symbol ,but fails (for now, try again after the battle) She does however pick upon on the word Giants - plural. Before she can tell the others the room explodes in a shower of rock. She runs outside and casts entangle over the mouth of the valley.

Brom runs from the damaged building as he pulls his bow and fires at the approaching Giant but misses.

Barratore also runs outside while drawing his bow. He fires and misses the lumbering foe.

Peza looks through the keep's new window and fires a bolt at the Giant, hitting it in the chest.

Gerox follows his friends outside and casts haste on his friends.

Hert watches with a helpless paralysis as the boulder crashes into the keep.Seeing that everyone appears Ok he kneels and prays to gargul for a moment before charging ahead of his friends.

Edson is energized by his friends magic and sprints forward(shall we say 60ft?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The warcries from the jungle change to calls of anger and frustration as the trees begin to writhe and bind whatever lies within. The lead Giant is unfazed as it lumbers forwardsm while a few shapes emerge from the tangling vines. Orcs and Goblins pour from the jungle.

As the giant reaches the rock fortifications it picks one up and throws it towards the oncoming heroes however its misses, rolling away.

Gerox Gerox calls out a battle plan
Hert conquers his fears and rushes at the Giant, Raising his shield to protect himself
Edson moves up again, stopping and firing the bow at the hill giant. And misses horribly.

The greenskin army continues to emerge from the frees and flood the valley some still twisted in vines while others break free. The entanglement has done its job and the orc ranks are in disarray

The giant pauses having been injured by the arrows, only to have a small man run up to it, shield raised. The giant raises it great club and swings it down against the puny Shield, crushing it against the human while a sound like a gong being struck rings out(Hert takes 17 damage), The Giant repeats his swing but it glances off the shield.

DEFENSE OF THE PEOPLE: ROUND 4

Map of the Valley

So... vital strike is clear to all now? (including me)
Yes, Prayer is now considered in the rolls.... Hert regains 1 hp
Please feel free to question anything that seems off - I am only human after all... and sometimes a minotaur or dwarf.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Harvest uses a pearl of power to cease the entanglement on the trees and then cause the grass to spring forth and snare the oncoming horde.
Brom resolves that he must get close to the giant to assist Hert and charges the Giant. Up close the mighty BAS slices into the giant, but he does not get off unscathed. The giant swings his greatclub into Brom at the same time with a thud. (aoo hit 32 for 19 damage)
Barratore mutters to himself as he moves forward, changing his aim to the oncoming orcs. The arrow flies true and strikes a larger orc who roars in pain.
Peza is shocked by the giants clobbering of Hert and fires again, this time missing.
Gerox disappears and looks for the catfolk. Most have retreated to their huts, but seem to be ready... perhaps they are waiting for something.
Hert casts shield of faith, determined to stall the giant
Edson moves with amazing speed and fires two arrows on target, the first bounces off but the second hits a soft spot.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The giant shrugs off the grass gripping his feat and attacks the barbarian that has caused him so much pain. Raising his greatclub he slams it down on the small barbarian, and then a second time for good measure. (hits brom at 29 and 20 for a total of 30 damage.)

The larger orcs scream orders to the others, "Get off the long grass ya pukes! Kill them all!" the mutterings of "yes sarge" can be heard. os2 throws an axe at Hert, but it falls short.

Barratore steps 5 feet forward and puts a three more arrows into the same large Orc as before (Os2). Yes he was liking Gerox's new spell. Orcs were getting out of Harvests spell and by Imod, there were a lot of them. After this Barratore knew he would need to close on the giant, wonder how long the spell of Gerox was going to last. Against the giant, one with only one head he noted, the enhanced speed would be a great benefit.

Edson tries to shoot a second arrow before the first hits, he succeeds but in his haste the second arrow is ineffective
Gerox remains silent and hidden as moves to intercept the northern force.
Barratore is getting used to Gerox's new spell and fires 3 arrows at the Orc Sargent. The first two stop it, and the third drops it for good.
Brom still stands against the odds and takes three swings at the giant. Only one gets past its defence. Both warriors stand face to face, on their last legs.
Hert yells at Brom to retreat (not that it is likely to happen ) and puts himself in harms way in order to heal the battered barbarian.
Peza lines up a shot and fires, hitting the giant. The hit is enough to push the giant over the edge and it falls backwards into the entangling grass.
Harvest is glad Brom survived the assault from the giant, and was able to down it with a few added arrows. She draws her halberd while casting divine favor and rushing forwards.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The giant is dead. Yells can be heard from the trees as the giant falls and a horn sounds.

The northern force has started to round the People's defensive walls, the leading orc sergeant throws an axe which misses its target, while two goblins fire arrows in the direction of Barratore. The horde is finding its range.

The leading southern force pauses suddenly as the sergeant falls to barratore's rapid fire arrows. the rear of the southern force pushes onwards and a volley of goblin arrows land at the feet of Brom and Hert. Only one arrow looks to be on target but it bounces harmlessly off Hert's dented shield.

In the distance, the trees shake.

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Edson pulls up beside Barratore with a smile on his face and fires two arrows at the orc Sargeant, hitting with one.
Barratore steps forward and looses a volley at the next Orc sergeant, one finds its target.
Brom moves to intercept the southern horde, BAS at the ready
Hert wipes the sweat from his brow, having survived at attack from a giant. He follows Brom to intercept the southern group and heals them both as they move
Peza changes tactics to better support her friends up close , she jumps from the crumbling keep and runs ahead. Looking to the trees she can see 2, 3,5 ... Lots of heads.
Harvest ispeeds across the ground to join Hert of Gargul and the Rager and a burst of healing light washes over the two giant slayers. She stands with polearm at the ready.
Gerox stands in front of the oncoming horde. It would be safer to stay invisible but he instead raises his hands and sprays the greenskins in flame

The assault is devastating as four goblins drop immediately. The affected orcs all stand but some are barely there.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Os 1 charges Barratore while drawing his greataxe and slices into the minotaur's armour (barratore takes 14 damage), two goblin arrows bounce off him however.

Os3 likewise charges Gerox and swings his axe wildly, but misses completely instead hitting a blackened orc who has staggered next to him, killing it (o3 is dead)

The northern group closes on gerox and lets loose with arrows and javelins. An arrow grazes his cheek (1 damage) but he is otherwise unharmed.

The southern force likewise closes in
O5 closes on Harvest moon and takes a hevey hit to its gut, but still stands (aoo).
G10 charges harvest Moon but its sword bounces off her armour.
G16 Charges Brom and misses with its sword, brom retaliates with a readied attack cleaving it in two.

Arrows and javelin rain down on the cluster of heroes with little effect (Brom takes 2 damage, harvest takes 4 damage.

There is a roar.... Getting louder... then out of the trees it comes -- The Orc cavalry. A stream of Worgs and their riders team from the trees along the Southern wall - 10 in total.

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Brom steps forward and cuts down two before calling a warning
Gerox Gerox flinches at the scratch and knows he must slow this group down. He lets flame flow from his fingertips once again. The effect is not as impressive this time, as although the greenskins are now black, only one orc falls.
Harvest Moon, seeing that Brom and Hert have things under control runs back to help Barratore, and charges the orc sergeant.
Edson steps to the side to get a clear shot and fires twice taking out both nearby goblins
Hert calls out a warning as well and is about to suggest a plan - but his friends have already run off . He slices down the foe before him before stepping again
Peza fires a shot at the orcs attacking gerox. The smoky haze rising from the corpses must have obscured her view as the shot misses.
Barratore catches the Sergeant on the way in, and three more times with the final swipe piercing the orcs skull. The brute slumps to the ground

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Os3 is blackened and angry he chops his greataxe into the gnome casters shoulder and it bites deep. A goblin short sword also finds a weak spot while the javelins and arrows continue to miss(Gerox takes 17 dam total).

The Southern force runs into Hert and Brom, swords flashing in the fading light, and arrows raining down. Their defences hold bar for a lucky shot from the orc sargent, who adds a new scar to broms Chest (Brom takes 10 damage)

The Worgs run further into town before firing a volley at the exposed Peza. They also fail to hit their target.

Three of the ettins break into a run and skirt around the entangling grass. the fourth seems to be moving slowly and heads around to the north.

"Yes," is Harvest Moon's reply to Edson Kazil. That, and a nod.

She called upon a blessing of protection, invoking Domi's name. A translucent shield, graved with the symbol of his fist springs up in front of her to show that she had been heard.

"Come this way, Gerox Shale," she calls to the beleaguered gnome. She rushes forward and takes a stance, preparing the polearm for the swarm of Green Skins.

Hert stands his ground and stabs a goblin
Edson directs traffic and sends some arrows into a worg
Harvest Moon summons a shield and runs towards gerox, calling him to retreat.
Gerox refuses to retreat - he is force to be reckoned with! He demonstrates this by incinerating two more orcs and three goblins.
Brom returns the favour and opens two wounds across the orc sergeants chest
Peza smiles at the ash piles that were orcs and uses a little magic of her own. the screaming bolt flies true and strikes it target, testing all around it.
Barratore backs up and shoots at the lead rider, the arrow bounces of the orc's armor.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Sergeant in front of gerox has withstood three blasts of fire and intends to pay the gnome back in kind. He swings his Axe into Gerox's side, crushing ribs and spewing blood. (gerox takes 19) A lucky goblin arrow then hits him in the shoulder for good measure (gerox - 4 more damage)

To the south, Brom is in a heap of trouble . The Orc Sergeant has another swing and slices open the rages leg. An orc sword then impales his arm and another critically pierces his ribcage. The mighty warrior Still stands however (os hit 25 for 13, o10 hit 18 for 7, o6 crit on 22, confirmed 19 for 18 damage - total of 38 damage). No other blows or arrows land a hit.

The cavalry splits in two as some stop dead in their tracks thanks to Peza's arrow. Not all riders were affected and they return fire, one catches Peza on the shin, pain shooting through her leg (5 damage to Peza)

The ettins continue their march onwards, evil grins across their 8 heads. From the trees a deep voiced call issues forth "KILL THEM ALL. NO PRISONERS."

"Gerox?" - he calls out, hoping to hear the response from the gnome, but no response comes from the gnome. "Gerox!?" - he calls out again, ready to leave the battle to save his life. No response again, but before he does leave, he overhears Harvest Moon addressing the gnome. Hesitant, he decides to stay in line with Brom for now.

The next distraction is Barratore's amazing display of power. He knew the taur was strong, but this... this is something incredible and almost unbelievable. With Barratore on their side they might still have some hope surviving this.

Hert himself can't do much, unfortunately. He is safe behind his armor and Garul's shield, but that is about it. And with the giants towering around, no armor will protect him for long. Hert whispers a short prayer, asking for guidance and assistance, and his prayers are answered. He channels the power of Gargul to Brom, giving him God's protection:

Hert's healing revives Brom, who was standing by adrenaline, and gives life to the rager. Another two-headed giant breaks the tree line. This one appears to be the leader. As much as Brom would like to test his mettle against this one, in his current state, he would need Barratore's help. But we'll see if the ettin gives him that chance.

In the meantime, Brom needs to handle the orcs and ettin in front of him. The barbarian attacks his immediate opponents.

DEFENSE OF THE PEOPLE: ROUND 10

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Edson takes a step back and firs two arrows at W10, hitting both rider and mount
Harvest Moon cuts down the staggered orc sergeant before healing geox and rushing forward in defence of the gnome.
Barratore draws his sword and issues a warcry before rushing forward to cut down the Worgs. Edson however steps in his way and restricts his movement. Barratores mighty sword still has the range on two worgs and their riders and barely slows as it cuts them all down like butter (worg 5 and 9, and rider 5 and 9)
Peza hits w7 and calls Edson back
Hert bolsters Brom's defence in preparation for the giants
Gerox staggers away looking for a way to help
Brom stops bleeding a little and realises he will likely need the minotaur's help. He lashes out and adds another kill to the BAS' tally

Catfolk keep the southern cavalry at bay, downing one Worg, but losing one of their own. Three more spring from the middle hut and join the fray.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The goblin marksman that momentarily downed Gerox drops his bow and begins to shake as Harvest kills his sergeant and runs up in front of him. Harvest is the least of his worries as the northern ettin, flail in each hand, caves in the goblins football head with a single blow.The ettin laughs and swings the second flail at Harvest, the spiked ball tearing at her arm (12 damage).

The southern force quickly clears a path to allow e2 to advance, while those within range make their attacks. The greenskins fail to pass the defenses of the Brom and Hert. The ettin takes a swing at both hert and brom, the spikes drawing deep gouges across Hert's shield, and glancing away from Brom thanks the new faith shield. (no damage this round)

The southern worgs are held up by the feline warriors but the northern pack move in and attacks once again. (Barry gets 1 AOO on each)
Pending AOO: W10 Chomps down hard on Edson's Shoulder (8 dam), and flings the elf to the floor, unconscious (I have you at -2hp). W7 and W8 focus on the Minotaur and dive forward through the warriors sweeping blade. if they survive they both score a bite on the taurs legs (7+7 = 14 damage)

BROTHERS. SISTERS. HEED MY CALL. WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS THIS DAY! DEFEND THE VALLEY OF THE PEOPLE! - Mother has emerged from the rubble of the keep and is calling to the the People to take up arms and defend their home against the overwhelming threat of the advancing ettins. It is truly inspiring. (inspire courage +2 to all heroes who can hear Mothers voice echoing through the valley)

ooc DM note: if attacking a Worg, please clarify whether you are aiming for the Rider or the Worg. They have different AC, skills etc so it can make a big difference. If a square has both it will not be listed as WR on the map moving forward. Just Worg will be W, and just rider will be R.

Harvest Moon growls at the pain that comes with the shredded flesh of her arm. Now is not the time to stand. She withdraws.

It is good to find that Gerox Shale is up. But he does not look well. And Edson Kazil has fallen. But it is good to see that The People are still fierce.

She rounds the big fire and takes up a position near Barratore Steelwind, surveying the land, deciding what should be done next.

"Gerox Shale, come to be near Peza. It is protected. Give us the magic of swiftness once again. I will try the healing light one more time also. It will help you. And it will bring Edson Kazil back to his feet. Or, at least, prevent his death."

DEFENSE OF THE PEOPLE: ROUND 11

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Barratore seizes the opportunity when the cavalry enter his reach and cuts down W+R7, and R8.

Harvest Moon withdraws from the Ettin and calls Gerox to follow and provide some extra juice.
Gerox repositions while dreaming of potatoes and casting haste on the close allies
Brom activates his Guarded Stance and stabs the ettin under the arm.
Hert puts Brom's health before his own to heal the injured barbarian. The ettin is slow and misses the opportunity to kill Hert
Barratore decides to raise the stakes and become a giant in his own right. He screams at the worg rider (which is actually an orc - should do better descriptions)
Peza sizes up the targets and aims for the Ettin engaging Brom and Hert. her bolt flies true and pierces the giants armour.
Edson tries a distraction but then misses horribly

Catfolk keep the southern cavalry at bay, downing one Worg, but losing one of their own. Three more spring from the middle hut and join the fray.

"Charge the beast!" calls the larger Ettin

Etttin4 charges the enlarged Barratore and connects with a blow from a flail, the spikes sinking deep before ripping away (Barry takes 17 dam). Barratore takes the opportunity and repays the favor (1xaoo=25dam to E4)

E3 is blocked from charging but draws two javelin as it walks and throws them at Barratore. Surprisingly only one hits the huge target, (Barry takes 6 more dam)

E2 roars at the pests before him and begins a hail of flails at the two warriors. The shots are good, but the heroes defense is better. The greenskins poke their swords between the swinging chains to no avail. (no damage again for Hert and Brom)

The northern worgs fight on and Edson takes a vicious bite on the shoulder, the elf is flung to the ground like a rag doll as he slips into unconsciousness (ed takes 8 dam).

The southern worgs continue their battle with the catfolk and another worg drops.

The Ettins flail bruises ribs and elicits a thumping grunt from Barratore. The fighter adjusts his grip, letting his blade dip and then violently thrusts it into the ettins chest. The blade cuts deep into flesh and through bone. In a single fluid motion, Barratore extracts the blade and sweeps down at the very dead orc astride the worg. The fighter maintains his momentum and spins a complete circle, but the blade turns slightly and skips off the ettin. Recomposing himself, Barratore follows with an overhand swing as he resets his feet. The gods chuckle to themselves as the blade goes wide and seals the fighters death.

'It's not brute strength young Barratore. The way of the blade and bow is a matter of speed a battle of inches.' the lesson flashes through his mind as his blade sinks into the fertile ground next to the ettin.

The ettin in front of Hert takes several serious blows and it doesn't look like it will be alive for long. The orcs and goblins don't even look like a threat now, as they failed to deliver a single blow.

The enemies have breached their defenses from the sides, however. Hert looks at the village to see that all of his allies are badly hurt, and Edson is on the ground. Barratore is towering above the giants delivers deadly blows that Hert silently prays he will never have to take, but he is badly hurt as well. The choice is clear.

"Brom! Edson is down, and I have to heal the others! I will go now. Finish here and may Gargul help you." - he tells the barbarian as he for the first time shows his back to his current opponents.

He starts running towards the others speeding up and raising his sword for an attack. He charges one of the ettins from the flank, plunging his sword right through the giant's side. His attack may be weaker than Brom's or Barratore's but it still does damage, and more importantly, allows him to rejoin his injured allies.

Too late. The meager healing she might provide would be too little. Edson Kazil must wait.

Harvest Moon leaps with the polearm. The blade and spike bounce from the hide of the two-headed Green Skin. But the speed lent by the magic of Gerox Shale is such that Harvest Moon turns the deflected blade and brings it in an arc down from above to strike directly between the two heads. The meaty thump comes right after that of Hert of Gargul, and it would be a miracle indeed if the Green Skin Ettin survives.

Harvest Moon steps forward to strike down the giant but Hert has already finished it off, she turns and heals her friends instead
Gerox calls forth a ray of fire that scorches the Ettins hide

Catfolk continue their assault but and faltering

The heroes focus on the giants at the neglect of the closer threats. The two worgs advance on barratore, their teeth tearing at his shins as they both score a hit. (7+5=12 damage). The ettin also advances and catches a blow from barratores gore covered blade (aoo, ettin takes 29 dam) but barely slows as its flail crashes into Barratores jaw. A sickening crack is heard and the minotaur begins to shrink and crumples to the floor, unmoving. (Barratore takes 16 damage and is now at -11. He has a con score of 16)

The large ettin chuckles as Barratore slumps, defeated, while they march on. E1 moves in close, happy to draw an attack in order to get a better shot. His first flail swats Gerox, sending him to the floor (13 dam, gerox has -8hp,

The other hand swings its flail overhead, bringing it down on the head of harvest moon. The force of the blow is shocking as the hero is crushed. (crit, confirmed - 28 damage, HM is at -2hp)

Victorious, Hert withdraws his sword from the fallen giant. He looks at the others, waiting for praise and congratulations. The next thing he sees is two giants crushing through their ranks, and Gerox, Barratore and Harvest Moon falling almost simultaneously.

Hert acts almost instinctively. He raises his hand to his holy symbol, and begs Gargul to save their lives. A healing wave, stronger than usual is released, and covers the many creatures around.

Then Hert changes position to flank and distract one of the ettins, hoping to gain some advantage. He loudly slams his sword on his shield, attempting to draw attention of the giant from his injured comrades to himself.

OOC: Hert uses a Hero Point to use Channel Energy twice.

He heals Barratore, Harvest Moon, Gerox, Edson, W8, W10, E1 and E3 all for 21hp.

Then he moves to AZ19, providing flanking against E1

Barratore grimaces as the worgs continue to attack though they have no riders. A fleeting curse heads Wardds direction involving things mortals cannot do to themselves. The ettin's flail is too fast, too forceful, and Barraoter's already buckling legs cannot get him out of the way. He tries to roll, but everything is simply too slow, his body is done and then with a brief flash of pain there is nothing but darkness. The fighter does not even see the ground or feel himself land.

A flood of adrenaline ripples through him and Barratore's eyes snap open. His blade lies where he dropped it, but no matter. He was a child of Imod, a minotaur and was nearly as deadly without it. Still lying on the ground, he whips his great horns into the ettin lying near him.

DEFENSE OF THE PEOPLE: ROUND 13

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Brom ignores the greenskins and charges a new ettin, the BAS drawing more blood
Hert watches as his friend topple like dominoes and calls upon Gargul to raise them up again, he channels energy across the battlefield, healing friend and foe alike
Barratore tries to gore the ettin the knocked him down, but his bad luck continues
Edson, floating in and out of consciousness takes a swing at the beast before him but misses, still groggy from the assaults.
Harvest Moon awakens and quickly kicks at the giant, hitting a sensitive spot. The Ettin howls and drops its flails as it doubles over in pain
Peza fires at the hunched ettin and scores a hit (harvest stunned the ettin, dropping its AC. your first shot hit, your hero point was not used, i rolled damage + vital strike, ettin takes 16)
Gerox opens his eyes to see a bloody hunched giant above him. He releases a ray of fire that cooks the ettin. It topples over backwards, dead. He rises and runs past the barratore who is still lying down.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Their numbers are thinning but they are determined. The two worgs snap at the prone minotaur, and a small chunk is removed from Barratore's thigh (6 damage). The real threat It the giant that grins as it flails swing over and over, at the two heroes within range. Its first strike drives into Barratore's stomach, knocking the wind from the taur once again (Barratore is now -12hp), two of the next three swings hit edson, knocking him out once again (28 dam, now at -5hp).

The Large ettin is also skilled with his flails and 4 well timed swings crush the catfolk standing in his way. Clearly this beast is superior to those who march before it.
The greenskins hold their ground and draw their bows once again, Brom their target this round. Their aim is horrible, yet somehow the wind pushes a wayward shot and it hits the barbarian, slightly breaking the skin and the base of his neck (1 damage).

Mother Continues her call, her voice is failing her as she sees her family cut down so easily "We WILL defeat the Greenskins. FIGHT ON BROTHERS!

Brom sees the situation. Barratore and Edson are down, two ettins and half-dozen worgs are still engaged, and a dozen or more goblins and orcs seem to be waiting or just staying out of the ettin's path. Grim, very grim. Brom turns to Hert. "Ya get Barratore standing and keep him up. No more healing everybody. If he dies, it's all lost. I can't do it. Peza kill the ettin and the worgs, leave the big one ta me. Gerox another speed spell on me, if ya got it. If not, help clear the worgs and ettins here. Harvest help here. I'm gonna keep that thing busy, but please hurry.

Arrows fly by, swords clash all around the place, as the cleric stands in the middle of this chaos.

He tries to call a healing wave yet again, but his holy symbol barely even glows in response. It appears that Gargul has grown tired of him for now.

Map of the Valley

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Brom slashes at the Giants armor finally cutting through on the third attempt. blood sprays but the ettin stands
Harvest Moon calls for the death of the ettin she has just ensnared
Hert unable to heal tries to stall the large ettin by blinding it, the spell seems to have no effect on the strong willed giant. He runs in close as a distraction.
Edson continues to slash at the worgs, but to no avail (only one Hero point can be used per turn as i understand it)
Peza continues to launch bolts at the ettin, making it look like a walking pincushion
Gerox fires three magic missiles into e3. the giant is in bad shape but still alive.
Barratore lies still, his shredded body no longer a target
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Large ettin roars as Hert pulls up beside him as the right head swivels to focus on the cleric of gargul. hert has successfully caught the ettins attention, and catches two blows from the right arm flail, piercing armour and breaking bones.(Hert takes 36 damage). the left head and arm remain focused on the Brom and swat the bloodied barbarian to the ground. (Brom take 16 damage - with rage ending this puts you at about -19hp, which would mean Brom... has died. Please correct me if i am wrong)

E3 struggles to free itself from Harvests grip and eventually pulls free. It swings a flail down at her in response, catching her on the chin and sending her to the floor once again (12 damage).

The two worgs snap at Edson and he receives another bite wound. Edson falls, unconscious again

Goblin arrows again litter the floor near Hert, none coming close.

Mother has been running toward the front line as quickly as her frail lags will take her, and finally she has run enough. Her inspiration stops as she bows her head and speaks an ancient tongue. A warm glow spreads over Peza, Barratore, Gerox, Edson and Harvest. Bleeding stops and wounds close as healing energy fills their bodies. (those affected gain 29hp).

Mother falls to the floor.

But the only way to end this is to defeat the giant. Flanking him with Brom, he manages to make two attacks before the giant strikes again.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Brom heart still beats so he slices open the larges ettins leg
Harvest Moon's foot drive up and into the E3's groin. The giants eys roll back in it head as the pain is too much and it crumples in a heap.
Edson slices the nearest worg after a few attempts and the beast drops with a whimper (Ed's hp=27 by my count)
Hert is injured but fights on stabbing the Giant deep and causing it to howl in agony
Gerox fires three magic missiles into the last giant
Barratore regains consciousness and savagely gores the nearby worg, ripping open its chest, killing it quickly.
Peza changes her focus to the larger ettin. She aims slowly and releases, the bolt flying true and piercing the brutes armor, sticking fast in its chest.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The sound of a Peza's crossbow bolt puncturing the armor plates of the large ettin ring out across the battlefield and is followed by an eerie silence.

The Giant still stands but is motionless. To the south the catfolk slide their swords from the corpses of the dead worgs. The pack of goblins have turned and are running for the trees.

The ettins left head coughs and blood trickles from its mouth, before cloing its eyes. It lowers its arms and drops the flails to the floor. The right head grimaces in agony as it tries to stay standing. It locks eyes with the barbarin before it and states flatly"I have lost. Finish it quickly"

The catfolk rush over to mother who still lies motionless.

The sticky mud that covers Harvest Moon, concealing her face save for the round holes for her eyes, is a mix of the dirt of the ground and many buckets of her own blood. No giants tower over her. One head or two. There is only the sky above. The blue sky draws the fight from her. It calls to her soul. It says that she could simply lie here and wander in the clouds.

But she has friends, and they must be cared for.

Harvest Moon springs to her feet. Flecks of blood soaked mud fly about as she looks here and there. "Do not slay the Green Skin. We must find who sent him here," she calls. Then she rushes to the side of The Mother.

Harvest Moon rushes to aid Mother while calling to Brom stay his hand, they need the Giant alive in order to question him. Her pleas go unheard by the barely conscious barbarian who sees a live foe before asking for death. Brom thrusts the BAS forward and through the yielding Ettin.

The Large Ettin glances at Harvest Moon and smiles before sliding off the BAS to the floor, dead.

Edsonrushes to Brom side to support the frail warrior, as Hert limps over and administers healing magic, closing the wounds and stemming the bleeding that surely would have ended a lesser man.

Assured that Brom will live to fight another day, Hert makes his way over to Mother to see if he can help, ignoring his own wounds for the time being.

Barratore takes stock of the League Adventurers and finds them all live and accounted for.

Peza catches her breath, having survived their toughest battle to date. She notes Hert's heroics in slaying the giants, and Edson's courage against the odds. She moves with Barratore as he ensures the enemies do not rise again.

Gerox does not approve of killing the Large ettin before it could be questioned but is resigned to the fact that it is Brom's way. He move to assist the catfolk and Mother if he can.

As the last goblin disappears into the trees, you take stock of the damage and loss to the village. The People emerge from their huts and tend to the injured, bringing water to clean wounds and gore. Five catfolk have died and Mother is unconscious.

As the sun sets and the moon rises into the night sky, the bodies of the slain Catfolk are blessed by Young Mother before they are interred into the ever-burning fire at the heart of the village. The greenskins removed to the side and prepared for a similar ritual in the morning.

After a time, Mother awakens, but is weak. She calls for you to come closer.

"Thankyou my friends. You have saved the people. Those who have died did so with honour and will be remembered. Let us celebrate their lives and not cry for out loss.." she slips into sleep and is carried into a nearby hut.

Young mother calls out to the grieving. "Mother is right. Let us celebrate this VICTORY!" Many of the catfolk scurry off to the huts and begin bringing out food and water and wine.

It was with great relief that Harvest Moon had stepped away from The Mother's body after ministering to her condition. Not dead after all. All things die. But to have died while under their protection felt so very much like a terrible failure.

And yet ...

"This is not finished." A grim visage paints the face of Harvest Moon as the Catfolk rush to celebrate. They are innocent. As the animals, they do not think to the future. "We must follow," she says to her fellow League Adventurers. "We must find their camp. Perhaps there we will find something which speaks of who sent these Green Skins to attack the people and why they were sent."

"These Green Skins are not of this island. Think of how difficult it was for us to come here. And yet the Green Skins are here in many numbers. How did they come? How did they come without the knowledge of any from Rum? How did they pass the many Beastlords to come from the short to the center of the island?"

Harvest Moon calls for a minor blessing, and many gallons of water appear in the air above her head, falling down to drench her and wash away much of the blood-soaked mud upon her. She wipes both her hands and then her face, removing the scent of blood. Then, "I go." That is all she says before starting off on the trail of the Green Skins.

When Harvest Moon decides to go scout for Greenskins, Hert shakes his head in disbelief.

"What!? You can't be serious! We've been barely saved today, we are half dead, exhausted, and now we are supposed to take on more of their forces? Impossible! I'm not going there! As the adrenaline fades .... Peza takes stock of the voices ringing about .... they all point to Harvest ..

" what ?? your going to run after them ??? nooo please don't ... if something happens you'll be too far away to help ... its too dangerous " but the strong willed girl seems to have her mind made up already ...

Sound advice from the rest of the band isnt taken by Harvest ... so Peza watches as her friend head off

Turning her attention to those remaining ... she joins Hert .... assisting him ... applying bandages to the wounded ... a skill that is much needed as this past battle has shown ... something the ranger plans on changing ....

Brom takes the drink from his minotaur friend. "To another night." He says before taking a drink. "To winning the Gods favor this battle and to grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Gods intended a more divine means of consumption. Let's give praise to... BEER." With that said Brom chugs his drink.

"Ahh...let her go." Brom says aloud as Harvest wants to trudge off into the darkness at dusk. "She wants to meet Gargul, that is her choice. Sides," he says turning to the half-elf, "always said you had a bit of the rager in you. Seems it comes out after a fight. I get that. But we're all tired and half-dead, some of us, and those orcs'll wait til mornin'. So, get over here and drink with me and Barratore.

Funeral rites - DM Mark

Harvest Moon is not satisfied with the victory and informs the others of her intention to hunt down the enemy camp in search of answers. Gerox agrees that it is a good idea, but rest is needed first. Edson is more vocal, admonishing Harvest's headstrong attitude. Barratore tells Harvest to sit and celebrate before taking some wine and toasting with Brom. Edson has his hands full tending wounds when he hears harvest's plan, and makes sure everyone knows of disapproval. Likewise Peza disapproves and asks Harvest to stay. Brom is dismissive of the plan but recommends harvest stay and drink.

There is no convincing Harvest Moon. She is determined to find answers and melon in hand walks into the darkness.
The others were right. There was no subtly from the orcs this day. A trail has been carved, trampled and uprooted in the haste to destroy The People. Harvest makes her way silently through the night.

The catfolk eat and drink and begin to tell stories of those who have fallen and many tell of glimpses of battle seen from the hut. This will be a story passed down through the generations.

Gerox confirms the Large Ettin is dead and begins the task of looting it and the other corpses. The Giant is well armoured and his weapons are of a high quality, unlike the rest. He was clearly an impressive and cruel leader, and he appears to be the only corpse not bearing the two headed coat of arms.

Loot from the corpses:

2x +1 Flails
1x large size breastplate
1x Feather Token, Whip
1x Ishgaran Headband of Intelligence
1x potion of invisibility
1x potion of fly
6x short bow
3x short sword
6x flail
10X falchion

Harvest Moon (AC22/Touch21/FF17; CMD 24; HP HP 27/34) - Al

It cannot be far. It must be within a day.

Harvest Moon produced a holy light to guide her through the dark hours of dusk, then extinguished it as the moon and stars came out to guide her. She follows the tracks. Would the tracks of the fleeing Green Skins follow the same path that the League Adventurers had used to arrived here? Would it take the fork back to their camp? Or would the fleeing Green Skins, with their leaders gone, now flee to a different place?

She would fight the pain and the weariness. She would find the camp.
