Just like old times lad. Devlin says as he pats Bruagh on the back. He shuffles around and trades places with Raeb. These may just be the fodder, keep an eye out fer skeletons a'flame and zombies the size of an ogre. He informs the group.

Bruagh Stormbringer (Zach R.) AC 27/12/22 -- CMD 22/26 -- HP 86/90
Thursday July 11th, 2013 7:00:11 PM

"Shoulder to Shoulder brothers... let them come to us. If we stay in these narrows, their numbers mean nothing." comes the call of the Stonewarden.

"Once more into the breach, eh brother?" he says to Devlin.

"Raeb should probably switch places with Karnas, so as to make a wall of steel around our casters."

Bruagh tosses the large axe down and draws his Dwarven Waraxe and shield.

The group stays put, to lure the mindless creatures to a choke point. Sam Casts Grease and Karnas casts a Web spell. Terser readies for the things to close.
Bruagh drops the Large Great Axe and draws his weapon.
Devlin swaps positions with Raeb
Karnas falls back next to Devlin

Two of the zombies are caught and held fast in the casting of the web spell. Two more walk straight into it and are likewise held fast

The horde advances, the skeletons have stout metal shields and long swords and quickly begin to close. All of them moving to the side to move around the web spell.

A large group of the zombies pick up their pace as well. Drawing short swords as they dart forward, covering ground rapidly and as nimbly as any living creature

Devlin sees Oathbreaker's flank is exposed and motions for Raeb to go cover the area. As she passes the druid touches her fur causing it to become stiff and bristly offering her more protection from blows. These don't look ta be the "mindless" dead, be prepared for a tough fight. He shouts to the group.

Sam decides to protect the weaker left flank and casts grease on KL 60-61. He draws his crossbow to prepare to help take a few undead down.

"Oath, if you run out of arrows, you can use my crossbow."

Ooc: Please move the first grease spell over to MN 57-58. Both grease spells will last 6 minutes.

"If I run out of arrows, leave me where I drop." The dwarf looks to their exposed flank, waving his hands quickly and casting a spell, for the first time in ages. The spell, Entangle, covers the last open space around the party.

The horde continues to advance upon you. For the most part, the undead show a superb level of either guidance or self awareness. The zombies in particular move as if trained by years of training at avoiding traps and snares. The corpses are mostly either human or dwarven, with the odd zombie possessing tell-tale long elven ears and slight frames.

As the undead swiftly descend upon your position, a few more of the zombies become entangled in the well-placed Web spell. One zombie hits the grease spell with great agility, using it to carry his momentum as he tries to attack Terser!

(For ease of reference, if a Zombie or a Skeleton is in one of your defense spells, I will use the strike through font to show they are disabled. Also, it didn't matter but you can only take a standard action as a readied action. So just 1 attack in the future. You killed the guy with only 1 hit anyhow! You can also technically make a 5ft step, but only if you didn't move at all in your turn.)

Braugh readies himself as they dead approach and swings his enchanted Waraxe. He is rewarded as an advancing skeleton is hewn apart at the spine, dropped in a single blow!

Terser swings his Wyvern Tailed Glaive (You should name this weapon.^_^ ) at the slip-sliding zombie, but is unprepared for it's agility and misses.

Raeb, at Devlins urging, moves to engage incoming enemies. The bear seems hesitant, as both fighting underground AND undead are against his nature, but for now he obeys. As the first Zombie rounds the corner and comes into the bears range, he gives it a powerful swipe of his claws, but the Zombie barely reacts! It seems they might be fairly resilient.

The undead zombies hit the heroes line first, and a barrage of short sword attack all fail to find home. Everything seems to be going according to plan...

(Hey guys, here's your post for Monday a little early. I had some time on my hands. So you have all day Monday to react. )

The grease pile magically shifts 5ft towards the heroes, the result of a strange combat map localized Great Migration. More zombies check their footing in the stuff, but are all okay. Karnas also wisely delays his second web spell after seeing the speed of the zombies, springing his trap as they flood through a perceived safe opening, ensnaring 3 of 5 skeletal champions fast, and engulfing the others. The zombies are more lucky, and only one gets trapped in the stands.

Sam starts to inspire his dwarf-kin, reminding them why they fight and for whom! Fear not this dark hole of death!

Terser adds more marks to his daily tally, easily bisecting Z34. He tries for a second zombie and easily punctures it at the neck, killing the undead.

Karnas gives his allies magical aid, hasting their attacks.

Oathbreaker looses arrows into one, but notices that his arrows, while magical, don't seem to puncture well.

Braugh swings and misses, unusual for the skilled warrior.

Devlin and Raeb work in perfect unison, dropping flaming spheres and mauling a zombie. (Adjusted Raebs attacks to a new enemy when 34 dropped. Also, understood on overcoming DR. Lastly, 0.63 isnt a spot on the map. Use the numbers in the dark grey column. ^_^ )
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zombie 35 nimbly maneuvers through the grease, taking a 5 ft step to flank Oathbreaker! He tries to backstab the dwarven archer but misses. His is quick enough to maneuver around the Flaming Sphere.

Zombie 21 has better luck, not only hitting the flanked dwarf but hitting for max damage! (Hit AC 20 for 16 damage)

Zombie 30 closes in and stabs at Raeb, having no trouble with the grease spell. He also hits the poor bear for max damage! (Hit AC 23 for 12 damage)

Zombie 33 takes a wide angle of approach, but also makes it through the grease spell to attack Raeb, but his sword bounces off the bears thick barky hide.

Zombie 31 attacks as well, but finds no purchase on the armored bear.

Zombie 19, who managed to avoid the worst of the Web before, slips through 5 ft further and swings at Braugh but misses.

Zombie 20 also dodges through the fibers to attack Braugh but does nothing to the armored dwarf.

Web Spell Two zombies free themselves from the lower web spell. Two are stuck fast. Another zombie and skeleton become stuck! 3 zombies free themselves from the upper web! 2 more become stuck!

The onrush from the horde seems to dwindle a little.

Feeling a now familiar burst of speed from the spell, Terser hacks at more of the horde, knowing that each one struck down is another that cannot escape to hurt innocent travelers, though they are much less dangerous than giants...He steps back a little to make full use of his long weapon while pondering potential names so that proper stories can be told of it. Terser considers names for his Glaive, which gashes through two more zombies as they engage his brothers.

Braugh makes a sticky mess of the two zombies next to him, scatter their pieces over a 10 ft radius. A twitching arm flies over his shoulder and splats against Sams cheek before falling limp to the ground.

Karnas and Oathbreaker each make tactical movements, while Oathbreaker notices something strange and tells his friends!

Devlin greatly increases his own strength while Raeb mauls the two zombies on their left flank.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zombie 35 barely manages to avoid the Flaming Sphere, then turns his back on the bear. Seemingly drawn to Devlins spellcasting, he slashes at the Druid! [Nat 20, does not confirm. 7 Damage.]

S. Champion 9 easily moves through the web and stabs at Braugh, but misses. Skeleton 7 does the same.

Zombie 6 , after navigating the grease and tumbling nimbly into place, denies the Grim Guard their attacks of opportunity! He stabs at Braugh! [Nat 20, does not confirm. 10 damage.]

Z 32 easily bypasses the grease and the grim guards defenses with his amazing acrobatics. He comes up from a crouch and stabs Sam! [Nat 1]

Z 15 also nimbly slides by attacks of opportunity, this time denying the raging Raeb! With the bear flanked, he attacks! [13, miss.]

z24 rushes through grease to join the horde stabbing Braugh but misses! [20, miss]

The rest of the horde either stays stuck in webs, or maneuvers through them. Oathbreaker continues to eye the strange situation with the retreating zombies. He with morbid curiosity as they form a line of defense near the middle of the cavern, then only parting as three large coffins are dragged to the middle of the line. It's difficult to see perfectly through all the web spells, but you are able to piece it together.

The first coffin door is flung open by a torch wielding skeletal champion, revealing a zombie much like the ones you have been fighting. The skeletal champion touches the undead with the torch and it is immediately set ablaze! It begins moving towards you all!

The second coffin is opened in much the same manner. The zombie inside is lit on fire and then sent after the Grim Guard!

The third coffin is set upright. The skeletal champion tries to open it, but to no avail. It "thinks" for a moment, then uses the torch to light the coffin on fire, and begins dragging it towards you!

Perception DC 25.

If you make the DC, I'll send you an email!

As the zombies rush the fortified location and more zombies begin a flaming advance Devlin's eyes glaze over for a moment. With a blink they are back with a twinkle of mischief in them. O' for the love off all that is holy cant he get anything right. Give me some room here everyone, I'm about to go prehistoric on these zeds. With that said Devlin's shape begins to alter and change his form drasticlally increases and scales begin to form on his skin. As the form takes shape a terrible looking lizard now stands where Devlin once was, long arms end in wicked claws and a blunt tail waves back and forth ready to smash bone. He lets out a primal roar eyes burning with defiance.

Raeb continues to thrash any zombies that come within range guarding the spot Devlin assigned to her. One slips from between her teeth and than Devlin's roar both physical and mental spurs her to renewed frenzy. Her claws slash into the desiccated bodies around her.

Wednesday July 17th, 2013 11:13:56 PM

Karnas remains pondering as he looks about the field for any more ideas to pop into his head, deciding he needed a better awareness of the field, he looks to his robes and shares a short conversation with Cark, as Cark flies out of his robes, quickly flying to the ceiling and out of reach of the enemy combatants, as he flew a circuit around the area and flew back, relaying the information to Karnas. Karnas takes this knowledge, and seeing a plan casts ghost sound to imitate the sound of a earthquake or moving stone, making the volume inaudible for the moment. He couldn't perform it just now, but might as well avoid having to try to bluff that many targets for his next move.

OOC:
Cark takes a flying run action, which at 40' fly speed allows him 40 squares of movement. fly the route as follows;
(If the following would put Cark in reach of any enemy target, find a route that doesn't that has Cark able to get to at least M55 and back. The reason for this is to use the area knowledge to target a silent image's area of effect next round)
Q61 - H61 (9 squares) > H61 - H55 (15 squares) > H55-P55(23 squares) > P55-M55 (26 squares) > M55 - M61 (32 squares) > M61 - Q61 (36 squares) then land back in Karnas's cloak.

Karnas casts ghost sound, it's not audible but will be used to replicate the sounds of a wall of stone erupting from the ground next turn.

Terser continues his impressive tally, felling two more of the quick moving zombies.

Sam proceeds to cast his spell brazenly, completely ignoring the two zombies next to him! Both miss, and the gnome is safe!

Devlins transformation to a Megaraptor required much room. As a result he has to step back a bit for room! He calls to the others to make way, as his only route into the melee would be through the left flank. Raeb mangles another zombie, shredding it to uselessness.

Braugh swings his waraxe three times, and three enemies fall! He has cleared a LOT of space and has called for the rescue of a dwarf in the third coffin!

Karnas sends Cark out to scout the area. Even with the knowledge gained, Karnas will have to make a spellcraft check DC 15 to masterfully place a spell over an area he cannot see. (If I understand you correctly.) Futhermore, he also knows that it might be limited on volume, as his spell can only reproduce the noise of 24 humans or dwarves, which is about half as loud as the roar of a dragon, which is still much quieter than an earthquake. Still, while intelligent undead these creatures might be easily fooled?

Flint bursts free from the third flaming coffin! He swings and connects, then swings and misses! His flail seems ineffective! You are quickly surrounded by a wall of flesh. How are your acrobatics? Alternatively, there is going away from the other dwarves and up the other tunnel. Finally, there are two perfectly good coffins opened up and unguarded. Back from whence you came?

Oathbreaker watches the scene unfold, observing the battle.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Z35 fails his reflex save, but seems undisturbed by the fire as he stabs at Terser. (Hit AC 24 for 5 damage.)

Z32, angered by Sams elusiveness, stabs again at the small bard but hits the newly cast floating shield instead!

Z17 tumbles nimbly past Braugh and towards Sam. He crouches low, slashing at the gnomes knees and scores a hit! [Hit AC 24 for 9 damage]

Z1 attacks Raeb, but his attack is swatted aside angrily by the mighty companion. [Nat 1]

Z11 does the same, slashing the bears head and ear! [Nat 20, no confirm. 9 damage]

Z2 attack Braugh, but bounces off his armor.

More Zombies and Champions shuffle through the various webs, but none else attack the main pocket of resistance. Flint however, is not so lucky. His new position is a dangerous one!

Zombies and Skeletons attack him from all angles! 3 Zombies stab with short swords, but only 1 finds purchase. (Since the Skeletal Champion on the other side of him is still dragging the coffin, it doesn't flank and sneak attack and flanks do not apply) The skeletal champion strikes with great precision, cutting Flint with his wicked longsword!

Zombie: Hit AC 24 for 9.
Champion: Threaten AC26, Confirm vs AC 26 for 18.

The first Flaming zombie hits Karnas's web spell and sticks. Quickly, the strands begins to burn away around it! The second maneuvers into the webs as well. As the zombies march through the flames, you realize that they don't seem to be bothered by them at all.

All 5ft squares around the flaming zombies are burning away. The zombies appear to have a moderate Fire Resistance of at least 10, so there isn't any way the burning webs can harm them!

Terser dismantles two more undead before maneuvering his way closer to the embattled Flint.

Sam continues to inspire allies, and makes way for the giant raptor behind him. Flint now benefits from Inspire Courage!

Braugh hacks apart two more of the advancing zombies, giving himself room to manveuver. He is unable to do any meaningful harm to his third target.

Oathbreaker looses more arrows into z32, his other targets having been dismembered already. They find purchase, and though the arrows do little the shocking currents disables the creature for good. Oathbreaker requests the web be destroyed!

Devlin rips on some zombie flesh, but without enchanted natural attacks, he finds his attacks are resisted by the necromantic resistance. Still, both he and Raeb are able to able to drop their adjacent foes!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The flaming zombies continue to melt away the webs. The second manages to not get stuck this time, and burns away many segments as he closes on the Grim Guard. It's likely not much webbing will remain soon. S 5 drags the flaming coffin through more webbing, melting away much of whats left.

Z13, free of his bondage, charges at Terser but misses the tumbling dwarf.

Z24 and S6 move laterally to cut Terser off from Flint, and the Skeletal Champion manages to score a wound on the warrior. [Hit AC 25 for 9]

Champion 1, now with a clear path, moves in, his bones clattering as he bears down on poor Sam! [hit ac 22 for 3 damage]

Champion 2 also advances, swinging at the heavily armored Braugh, chattering his teeth as his sword bounces off the enchanted plate mail.

Flints own personal horde follows, trying to make his appearance in the caves a short one. Flints enhanced defense s hold however, and he goes unharmed!

Shrill screams come from all 3 caverns! Chattering bone and fast footfalls echo down each corridor. Far in front of you, a womans scream, shrill and full of anguish, seeps into your ears.

Terser fells more zombies, then concentrates on the screaming. He realizes it is he same scream, echoing throughout the tunnels. He is glad he made this observation, otherwise he might have wasted valuable time! He also sees a new swarm of dead approaching. There is something different about the undead directly behind the fresh zombie wall.

Braugh kills both skeletal champions with little effort, then steps in front of Sam to protect the gnomish bard.

Sam decides that offense is whats needed. He drops the wand and fires a bolt, but misses his target. The enchanted bolt snaps against the cave wall!

Devlin and Raeb take a moment to regroup. The bear seems hurt, and Devlin is enchanting his natural weapons.

Flint withdraws a short distance, and undead weapons lash out. He takes a few more wounds, one glancing and one moderate as he does so. [Nat 20, no confirm for 5 damage. Hit AC 25, no confirm for 5+4 sneak attack.] He unloads an arrow into the nearest skeleton, which would have fallen if not for it's inherent damage resistance.

Oathbreaker moves to the side and shoots through: A Large Dinosaur, 5 ft of Web, A skeletal champion, and a flaming coffin! His mean DM adds a 3/4 cover bonus to the zombie, but Oathbreaker still manages to strike it through the eye, and it crumples to the ground.

Karnas uses his own wand of cure light wounds (the group has two?) to try and aid Oathbreaker. He needs to make a use magic device check, since cure light wounds is not on his spell list. The DC is 20, and Karnas has +14 to the skill. He rolls a 6, and thus succeeds, but barely! (also, I see you have 100 charges listed. A wand holds 50 max. Have you ever used this wand?)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Skeletons 12, 3, and 4 continue their dogged pursuit of Flint. Zombie 18 pursues as well, but cannot attack this turn. They all swing and fail to break the Dwarves canny guard.

With all of the webbing either burned or no longer anchored, the spell fades away.

S6 and FZ1 close on Terser. The flaming zombie tries to tumble under his glaive, but fails and provokes an AoO! Terser cuts it down mid flip, and it splays on the floor, burning in pieces. Skeleton 6 jabs Terser with it's longsword, inflicting a moderate wound. [Hit AC 25 for 8 damage]

FZ2, S5, and Z3 attack various Grim Guard, but miss them all!

The scraping claws, rattling bones, and slapping feet echoing the the other tunnels finally reveals it source. Two more hordes are closing in quick!

Terser nimbly dashes forward, intent on rescue and preserving life! Of course, this also means ending undeath, which he continues to do well. Two more zombies become pieces of body parts on the ground.

Sam continues to inspire his allies. He also inspires a zombie with an inspirational bolt to the sternum. Firing with a zombie within ft DOES provoke an attack, which the zombie nimbly sneaks in. [Aoo from zombie Z3. Hit AC 25 for 7. No confirm.]

Braugh finishes the work on the flaming zombie, which falls in a burning heap. He also kills the last enemy attacking Sam.

Karnas summons a giant illusory wall, hoping to funnel the undead around to a single entrance. Perhaps as an unintended consequence, it appears they all now have to go through Terser! Further, it is your DM's opinion that none of you can see through the wall. Keep that in mind when making your decisions considering actions relating to Terser!

Devlin and Raeb do a little footwork, then the megaraptor splits the skeleton in front of him into dino-snacks.

Oathbreaker tries to line up a shot, but Karnas's wall is blocking line of sight!

Flint attempts to withdraw and starts moving to the others. To his horror however, a large earthen wall erupts from the ground, cutting off his escape! He does finally see Terser however, a living breathing dwarf! (covered in the disembodied parts of 15 or so zombies..)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

s6, cut off from Terser, turns back and attacks Raeb! His sword seems ineffective against the bears barky hide.

Terser is nearly surrounded! Worse, he cannot see what his allies are doing! Undead press at him with swords, trying to cut him down! [Hit AC 23 for 8, Hit AC 25 for 7, does not confirm, Hit AC 25 for 8, does not confirm, Hit AC 20 for 10 (4 sneak attack), 33 Total Damage ]

DM Ken If you were near enough to hear Karnas casting, you know he cast a spell right before the wall appeared. If you make a spellcraft check to identify the spell, you know an illusion was cast and figure it was probably the wall. I'd give a +10 bonus to disbelieving the thing, but even if you KNOW it's an illusion it still blocks sight.

Sam senses the sudden reality that Terser might actually be in trouble. He calls out to his friend, then tells Braugh to clear a path. He retrieves his wand of CLW, realizing it will be needed.

Meanwhile, Tersers veteran instincts begin to take over. He knows his situation is dire indeed. As he passes by Z11, it lashes out and slashes him with it's shortword, drawing more of the barbarians blood. Z 9 (I looked again at your AoO's. Only one would have hit, so it made no difference. You were right about the inability to be sneak attacked though!)

Braugh and Devlin work hard to clear a path forward, returning the dead to death as quick as they can! Still, it seems that the horde is endless...

Oathbreakers bow strums a steady tune, but his arrows disappear into the horde, seemingly without causing pain.

Flint tries to rescue his rescuer, but his arrow fails to hit it's target. He realizes he is in a losing battle and cannot do this all day. He draws an attack as he leaves, but the undead misses.

Karnas opens up peep=holes in his illusory wall, then probably wishes that he had not...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Grim Guard now have sight of Terser and his struggles. They watch him flee northwards, then to their horror several of the Undead move towards Terser, sensing weakness and tasting blood on their foul fingers. As the first champion reaches Terser, it is immediately split from skull to hip by the furious wyvern glaive. A second approaches, but as Tersers weapon separates a few ribs, it jams it's longsword without mercy into the dwarf, jabbing deep into his belly. [Nat 20. Confirm vs AC 21 - 18 Damage] It seems Terser is stable, then zombie finds his mark, nimbly dodging into range to jab a short sword into Tersers back. [Hit AC 22 for 6 damage]. Terser drops out of view, below the foul feet of the dead.

[Terser had 30 HP. He killed one baddie with an AoO. He hit the other, but it remains alive. He took 10 from an AoO, then took 24 more from undead this round. This drops him to -4. His rage ends, and his con drops to 16. He also loses the 12 HP from his increased con. This puts him at -16, which is equal to his constitution score. Terser has died.]

More undead attack Flint, but to no avail. His defense remains top notch.

The rest of the horde flail and stab without success at Devlin and Braugh, who now have to shoulder much more of the killing.

Karnas looked on horrified as terser fell to the zombies. He knew that his wall might have been the cause, but he likely was not going to survive longer regardless. he was going to be just as surrounded in the next turn wall or not and ripped apart just as much, and if not for the wall the rest of the group would be in just as bad a situation as him. With that large of a horde, it needed to be thinned down, it needed to be funneled through the bruisers of the party, and the party needed to stay together to fight. He kept his concentration however, even as bad as the death of a party member was, if his wall fell now the group would be next. He just hoped Devlin and Braugh could hold the line.

Sam calls out to Gargul, perhaps as a curse...perhaps as a plea. He continues to inspire his friends, and heals Raeb's minor wounds.

Flint finally settles, perhaps Terser's death was the catalyst he needed to calm his fighting nerves. Two arrows fly with great precision, ending the unlife of two zombies nearest him.

Karnas remains resolute in his judgement. "Terser would have likely died anyways", he thinks. "I may be responsible, but I'm not wrong. I have allowed this fight to become manageable..."

Devlin and Raeb work together, bringing down one of the champions and wounding another. It occurs to Devlin now that he probably has the angle on the undeads resistances. The zombies seem to resist fire and non-magic weapons. The skeletons resist anything that isn't magical and bludgeoning. Even while his claws and talon damage are ( DM EDIT : Turns out in PF claws are Slash/Bludgeon. Weird. )working fine! He finds that his bite is as effective as it can be. (Does all 3.)

Oathbreaker (who threw me off because he was using the wrong numerical digits? O66 would put you in the buff box.) fires more bolts, nicking skeleton 25 and knocking a piece of it's shoulder to the cave floor.

Braugh: (who missed the round.. has anyone talked to him?) cuts down the two wounded enemies stricken by the Grim Guard this round.

The Horde tries to fully engulf the Grim Guard, and the lead charge of it's number falls to attacks of opportunity as it runs by Braugh and Devlin. While the blow is not significant, Devlin can feel his life force tremble as the wight touches his skin! ( Devlin, suffer 1 temporary negative level. )

Further up the cave, Flint's struggle continues. Two of the wights have caught his scent as chase him down. The first bounces harmlessly off his shield. The second manages to wrap it's gnarled fingers around his bare skin, squeezing the life force from the embattled archer. (Nat 20. Confirm vs. AC 23 for 6 total damage. Suffer two temporary negative levels.) A zombie is there as well, but it misses.

Unless otherwise specified in the creature's description, a draining creature gains 5 temporary hit points for each negative level it bestows on an opponent. These temporary hit points last for a maximum of 1 hour. Negative levels remain until 24 hours have passed or until they are removed with a spell, such as restoration. If a negative level is not removed before 24 hours have passed, the affected creature must attempt a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 draining creature's racial HD + draining creature's Cha modifier; the exact DC is given in the creature's descriptive text). On a success, the negative level goes away with no harm to the creature. On a failure, the negative level becomes permanent. A separate saving throw is required for each negative level.}

DM Note: Here are the pathfinder rules on negative levels.

For each negative level a creature has, it takes a cumulative --1 penalty on: All ability checks, Attack rolls, Combat maneuver checks, Saving throws and skill checks.

In addition, the creature reduces its current and total hit points by 5 for each negative level it possesses. The creature is also treated as one level lower for the purpose of level-dependent variables (such as spellcasting) for each negative level possessed. Spellcasters do not lose any prepared spells or slots as a result of negative levels. If a creature's negative levels equals or exceeds its total Hit Dice, it dies.

Bruagh focuses his attacks on the wight's, and ignores the other undead horrors. He wishes he had more time to lament on Terser's death, but the thing that comes to his mind is the old Dwarven War Song that he started singing at the begginning of this fight. He picks up with one of the verses.

"But I carry strength from souls now gone
They won't let me give in...

I will never surrender
We'll free the Earth and sky
Crush my heart into embers
And I will reignite...
I will reignite

Death will take those who fight alone
But united we can break a fate once set in stone

Just hold the line until the end
Cause we will give them hell..."

Perfect time to listen to this song... get in the mood and all.

Terser hears the sounds of woldian battles dimming, and an entirely new battle begins to swell in his ears. In front of him are the legions of dwarven dead, those fallen in battle and in performance of good deeds. He prepares himself to join their ranks, fighting the good fight for all eternity, when a voice beckons from behind him. He is eager to go, but is compelled to turn.

In front of him is a dwarf drawn in gigantic scale, bearing an oversized hammer that would be more suited to the forge fires than battle, and glowing with an internal light that seemed to burn away all shadows, including the ones that marked Terser's own soul. This gleaming figure could only be his former patron, and he sank to one knee before the God's presence...

Braugh slams his Battle axe into the nearest wight. It staggers, but remains standing. He swings again, the the creature topples into the growing pile of cleaved dead on the ground.

Sam uses another charge to heal Devlin, then reloads a crossbow.

Flint's arrows take the first wight easily, pinning it to the ground undead his mighty shots. The second arrow wounds another, but it presses forward.

Karnas maintains his wall.

Devlin and Raeb plug the Braugh-Wall nicely, stuffing back the undead menace.

Enemies continue to move to surround. Attacks of opportunity cut down another skeleton as it tries to maneuver. Another falls prone in the residue of the grease spell.

Three champions and a wight all try to bring down the hardy Flint, but none are successful. More undead close in on his position, now that they are finished hacking at Tersers body.

Down south, the horde shambles into the Grim Guard, but the stern wall of Raeb, Braugh, and Devlin prove to be difficult to wound, and the undead score no wounds against them.

The towering figure just looks on impassively, more engrossed in his battle plans than the anger of a single dwarf. From their position on a hillside, Terser can see the ebb and flow of the armies below, seeing several areas where the dwarven forces were being pushed back, good souls being cut down by the enemy.

Why don't ye send reinforcements?! Strong fighters are being pushed back and cut down because they have no support! There are cavalry reserves that could lead a charge to save them. Hells, I could save them meself. And if you plan on letting them be slaughtered, then that's what I will do!

By the end of his speech, Terser is yelling, working himself into a frenzy. He looks about for a suitable weapon and attempts to go into the fray. But despite the God seemingly ignoring him, Terser seems locked in place, unable to move to support the front lines. It is a strange thing, being a battlefield commander. One cannot save every life, no matter how much value that life may have. Truly winning a battle serves the greater good, and a good soldier understands that he may lay his life on the line for this purpose.

The pocket of infantry that could have been saved by a cavalry charge collapses, many of the members dying under a wave of enemy troops. Encouraged by their success, they charge forward into a seemingly vulnerable part of the lines.

It becomes clearer and clearer that they have overextended themselves, charging into seeming weakness only to be surrounded on all sides. The enemy regiment is quickly decimated by a crossfire of spells and arrows once they were cut off from their own reinforcements, and the loss far outweighed the sacrifice of the dwarven brigade.

As his rage subsided, Terser came to understand the larger view, and how his own sacrifice may have allowed his companions the time to fortify their position and defeat a seemingly endless foe. Mayhaps his loss of faith was more to do with his own shortsightedness than any deficiency of his patron.

He still itched to rejoin the fight, but he knew enough that he should wait for orders, and trust in his commander that they would be the right ones. In time, the paralysis faded, and in its place, a light seemed to swell out of his hands.

He remembered the feeling, channeling divinity to tend the wounded and sick. He took his ability to move as confirmation, and headed down the hill to the healing tents where those injured on the lines were brought when they could no longer fight. His rage, which seemed at odds with his ability to heal before, now seemed to enhance it, the anger at the wounds aiding him to fight back infection and blood loss instead. Maybe fighting and healing are not so different after all?

That which is dead..
Thursday August 1st, 2013 11:04:32 AM

Sam Karnas and Oathbreaker are all quick to come to Devlins aid, assailing the shapeshifted druid with a flurry of blows from assorted healing wands! Devlins situation is no longer so dire!

Devlin and Raeb fight on, now that the master raptor has been supported by his fellows. Devlin slashes z21 into nothingness while Raeb tears apart both plague zombies! As the bear swipes through them both, they explode in a burst of necrotic goo!

Braugh and Raeb: 2 fort saves DC 11 please.

Braugh hacks the last two undead to pieces, and the cave is eerily absent of the wailing undead for the first time since the Grim Guard entered. Far to the north, the wailing sound of a woman is heard again, echoing throughout the caves.

If you truly wish to walk this path, there are those you must seek out to show you the way.

The Grim Guard advance slowly up the final chamber, pausing briefly to continue to use healing items on Flint, who seems to have regained his feet for now. They push forward, split briefly by a rock formation too small for all of them to fit through.

The keening and wailing is much closer now, and the outskirts of your darkvision outline a camp of sorts. There are two large structures, a tower ascending to the top of the cavern, and a small cabin just a little further back.

Another scream escapes from behind the iron door to the tower and is punctuated by the heavy thud of a fist as it slams into metal.

"I'm sorry! I can't help you Tali! I've tried! I'msorryimsorryimsorry...I love you!"

A dwarf is on his knees before the tower in the middle of a ring of undead. His left ear is missing, and large chunks of his beard appear to have been torn out. The only answer to his tearful words is another scream of anger and hurt.

"LOVE ME DAMMIT!

His fist hits the door again, and he slumps over, resting his head against the cool iron of the tower door.

One by one, the circle of undead turn to face you. Some have eyes glistened with tears. Some have ripped off their own ears. Some hold their hands out to you, pleading for something. All of them whisper raggedly as they come near, their voices bouncing off the cave walls all around you.."Loo..ve.. meeee..."

Sam listens carefully for any sound-based effects, but detects none. He tries his best to understand the current situation. (Perception Sam Only: DC 20)

Braugh advances on the enemy, advancing with a swing of his axe, but he hits nothing vital on the creature.

Karnas again relies on his illusory wall to stymie the enemy. It comes up without sound, as the three round interval plus the number of rounds since the first wall was cast far exceed Ghost Sounds 7 round limits.

Devlin tries to support Braugh, but due to his large size and Braughs positioning, he is unable to reach any enemies.

Flint tries to use the murder holes in Karnas's wall to good effect, but all his arrows fail to cause serious harm.

Oathbreaker drops an arrow into a zombie as it phases through the illusion-wall.

Undead press towards the grim guard. Several appear to vanish from sight completely, while more walk through the wall Karnas conjured without a second thought. Terser's body decomposes a tiny bit.

His consciousness continues its work serving his God's army, treating wounds as best as he is able, and angry that he is unable to do more. Something alerts him during his work though, and he looks out towards the field. There seems to be a new contingent joining in with the friendly forces, wielding long staves and polearms, very much like he himself does. They seem to ignore the wounds they, and they even seem to close of their own accord. Looking closer, Terser sees one man in particular, his armor and weapon adorned with teeth, claws, and other charms. After one particularly hard strike, he bellows, and the wounds of the warriors nearest him close up in a distinctly magical way. Could that man be one of the ones that Domi had spoken of?

Flint's years of training always had him roving at the rear of a battle, picking off targets while his brothers held the line with sword and shield.

Now twice, in a matter of minutes he has been thrust face-to-face with the ravenous undead. He feels compelled to reposition and fire from space, however those beside him are unarmored. Front line will have to do.

Braugh is seemingly plucky about his current situation. He lops off the legs of the nearest zombie and carries on his grim work.

Karnas figures that he could probably include Braugh and Devlin if he just needed range. However, he currently has no line of sight to the hard hitters of the Grim Guard. Perhaps he could request they fight their way closer? Either way, despite the noted fire resistance of the earlier undead, he responds to the threat with a Flaming Sphere. He targets the nearest zombie, which shows the same exceptional reflexes as the previous horde, and it avoids the effects of the spell.

Sam wants to move behind Devlin and breaks off from the ranged component of the Grim Guard. As he travels back through to the split in the tunnel, he makes a chilling discovery. Undead have come through the back tunnels, and both groups risk being over ran to some degree. Braugh and Devlin are probably not at much risk, but two undead also move in on the others! Even worse, there is no way he can make it to Devlin AND use his wand, because Devlin some distance away. If he DOES travel all the way to Devlin, he has to go through 2 more zombies who will assuredly get a chance to attack him as he passes by!

(Sam, in light of your new discovery, I will double you back to your location and heal Raeb. If you wish to continue on elsewhere, tell me, and I will retcon to allow it.)

(Devlin, for now lose the 5 hp sam healed. Give 5 hp to raeb. This may change again!)

Flint stands firm, a bulwark against the dead. The armored archer refuses to step away and expose Karnas and Sam, and pays for his bravery. While most of the undeads attacks bounce harmlessly off his armor, one zombie slips a shortsword into his side as he attacks! [Provokes 3 AoO's. 1 hits. Nat 20 to hit. Nat 20 to confirm! 19 damage. He is rewarded though, as his arrows fell the skeletal champion before him. (Also remember to deduct your last 11 damage from the previous round.)

Oathbreaker withdraws, giving himself space from the undead.

Devlin brings to bear the fury of nature, shredding and clawing through both a zombie and a skeletal champion! Raeb mangles the nearest champion, then slashes through to z3. The creature staggers, but doesn't fall.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though surrounding their foe, Braughs personal pack of minions fail to harm him! Devlin takes a small cut from the undead who closed in behind him. [Nat 20, no confirm. 5 damage]

Only one more enemy scores a hit. Skeleton 1, who had closed around from the side tunnels, draws a slash through Oathbreakers arm, scoring a light wound. [Hit AC18 for 6 damage]

Your map, royal highnesses.

Devlin-saur fights for it's life, turning to engage the flanking skeletons. His flurry of attacks all seem to connect, but only remove superfluous bones and cause no real harm. (All miss vs AC21)

Luckily, Braugh has his back. Even as Devlin engages foes from behind, the sturdy dwarf fighter smashes through the two enemies flanking his ally from the north.

Sam heals Flint, and calls out a challenge into the darkness of the cave. There is no reply other than the Zombies demanding love from the Grim Guard.

Flint ignores the dangers of ranged combat in melee, and suffers more attacks as he draws his arrows. Thankfully, all miss! The swirling combat distracts his aim however, and he fails to land any arrows into his foe. (All miss vs skeleton AC 21)

Karnas tries to think tactical. He summons a magical grease to try and slip up the undead, but as before the spell doesn't help much. The skeletal slips and slides, then finds his footing. The zombie seems hardly put out, and nimbly adopts a reactive pose.

Oathbreaker defends. (Your posted actions have been from the previous round of combat since Monday. And I'm an early poster for a DM!)

The Grim Guard, working together, finally down the rest of the surging undead. Flints arrows take two through the eye, shattering the onyx gemstones that pulse unlife into their bodies. Braugh and Raeb work together, a pairing not seen in some time, and shatter the host of dead threatening the fallen Devlin, who is wounded but stable. Sam kneels protectively over his charge as bone chips fly.

As you finally catch your breath, you hear the dwarf north of you spitting curses at the tower door, which has begun thumping and shuddering under the weight of an enormous force.

He spits on the ground, then raises his hand in the air, wielding a thick midnight blue spellbook. "Come on out Lass, come on out and obey!"

THUMP.

"Do as I command woman! Watch as I destroy your would-be rescuers! They'll na come between us!"

Thump. Thump.

.... silence...

Only the magical energies crackling at the Dwarfs fingertips makes any sound. His mad grin stretches from ear to ear.

"That's right me'love. Now come to yer mans side and watch. Come to Runus!"

Runus invokes the crisp and wordy language of abjuration, and releases the arcane locks on the tower door. It crashes open as three dwarven zombies swarm over him, battering him with their fists.

"Tali! Help me! What are these bloody fools doing! Tali! Help me love!

It is then, that Tali Ironbane, Princess of the Ironbane Clan, emerges from her tower. Her fists are rolled into quivering balls of rage, and her raven hair is wild and unkempt. Her crown still rests atop her head, and black eyes full of hatred roll slowly over Runus and the zombies that have engulfed him.

She slowly runs her clawed hands over grey skin, tapping them lightly against her round and swollen belly, already thick with child. She moans pitifully while looking at Runus, raking her claws over her stomach. She watches a thick oozy ichor seep from the wound and splash to the floor, then throws her head back and screams with rage!

She takes two quick steps towards Runus and flings the first zombie off of the dwarf and into the side of her tower prison. It slaps against the tower with a sickening crack and slides broken to the cave floor. She grabs the remaining two and bashes them together until they go limp in her arms, then hurls them into the walls of the cavern. Runus looks up at Tali horrified, and begins to scramble backwards and away. He screams in unbridled terror, and Tali screams back.

"RUUUNUUUUSSS!"

Tali spreads her arms and wails in anguish, screaming a lifetime of hate and suffering at the fleeing sorcerer. Her shoulders pop and crackle and her jaw elongates beyond what should have been it's physical limits. Her keening wail pulses with foul energy, slamming into the Grim Guard like a giants fist, as cold as the icy touch of Gargul himself.

Undeath in all it's foul permanence now stalks towards Runus and you for that matter. Her black gaze is locked only on the blubbering sorcerer, pointing an accusing finger at the Dwarf as she bears down on him. He crawls towards you, begging for help and mercy. It is clear she will overtake him, unless you can intervene.

Flint watches in terror as what appears to have once been a dwarven princess distorts before them and screams at her prey. He is paralysed with fear and stands staring, mouth open, at a sight he never dreamt of encountering.

That which is dead..
Wednesday August 14th, 2013 3:31:09 AM

Sams aim is true and his bolt punctures the dread princess through her throat.Tali gives pause and considers Sam for a long, terrifying moment. She caresses the bolt in her neck with a clawed hand, then snaps the shaft. Her skin re-knits quickly, pushing the weapon out of her body and into the ground.

She steps over the terrified Runus. Where once she saw limitless passion and desire, her black eyes now gaze upon fear, weakness, and terror. She growls... a peculiar sound that almost resembles a throaty purr, and straddles Runus, drawing blood as she traces her claws down his chest and over his heart. Then she pulls back her arm and condemns to hell one terrified sorcerer who perhaps painted too much on the canvas of undeath.

"Tali! P..please no! It wasn't my fault! It was the necromancers! I didn't know! Please by the Gods Tali don't do it plea...u..urgh.."

Tali's hand plunges into Runus, and as his hot blood washes over them both his final pleas for mercy die on uncaring ears. When she draws her arm back, it is covered in gore up to the elbow. Runus is no more, and his heart beats it's last in the hand of the one who held it for so long while he was alive. Perhaps unlike before however, that made no difference to Tali. Her passions had been replaced by new desires, only of which had not been fulfilled. His heart was simply a bit of flesh to be shaken off and flicked against the cavern wall.

Tali looks at you, then begins running. Her bare feet slap against the cavern floors until she reaches your line. An agile leap and she sails over your heads, running behind you at a speed hasted by the surge of undead power brought on by taking revenge on one of her murderers. She screams another name, shrieking at the top of her lungs as she runs for the exit.

"Kaaaadisss!"

Runus is dead on the floor before you. As your fears fade with the swift retreat of Tali, the Dead Princess of the Ironbane Clan, you feel weary with battle fatigue and sensory overload. Other than Runus, the cave room contains the newly opened tower which had once held Tali. There is also a large cabin-like structure, presumably a living quarters. There is also the recovery of Tersers body and some decisions to be made concerning his revival.

With a day of rest, Devlin could cast a re-incarnation spell. The Grim Guard are no stranger to Gargul, and know that they can either beseech him directly and petition Tersers return, or they can attempt to simply rely on Druidic powers alone, and resurrect their fallen comrade without Garguls explicit permission. Perhaps worthy of consideration are certain pacts or deals struck with Gargul in the past that may or may not have been honored.

Then again, it is possible someone at the Festival could try and raise Terser, but the most powerful spell caster there would be the prophet-daemon who sent them here in the first place. He most certainly would opt to avoid Gargul completely. Powers are a stubborn lot, even minor ones, and they tend to rub Gods the wrong way when possible.

(Just let me know your choice when you make it and we can proceed! You are out of combat now, and the cavern is yours to use or explore as you see fit.)

He makes his way over to the group and Terser's body. Makin' demands of gods are we now Sam? He says with a bit of levity in his voice. Aye we removed a large collection of abominations from the Wold but I don' know if that gives us the right ta demand a life back, again.

Devlin rubs his chin thoughtfully and realizes his mouth is covered in blood and gore. He summons more waters to clean himself and any anyone else who needs it.

I dunno lads we still have promises we made ta Him that we have not been able ta fulfill. The powers of the Scab are strong here and I may be able ta bring him back, but.... We risk pissin' Gargul off, bringin' Terser back as something other than a Dwarf, which might piss Terser off. Lots of risks.

Karnas followed the group to Terser's corpse. "He did fight well for the cause, but I would side with Devlin. If you've already asked Gargul to bring back someone and have not fulfilled your side of the bargain, it would not be wise to attract further attention. He may just ask you to perform a action that would be more than just a inconvenience.

I don't know if you should call Gargul or just try and reincarnate Terser. Reincarnate has a hefty cost to return what is lost from it, and he'd still likely be in a different form. I personally wouldn't mind the chance to experiment, but it's not my place to make that decision for another. If you have petitioned Gargul recently and left his bargain unfulfilled however, I'd best suggest fulfilling it before you call him. Attracting the Ire of gods is never a good idea. He may decide that since you didn't think his last task was so important, he'll actually give you something important to do that you can't wait on and very possibly will result in more than one death."

Without a clear consensus the Grim Guard decides to take a small break from their discussion. Unwilling to leave before the situation is resolved, they decide to explore the caverns, checking both the tower and the cabin.

The Tower is lavishly furnished, with several expensive looking paintings and prettily crafted nick-knacks. The decadence is starkly contrasted by what you can only imagine by a destructive bent caused by Tali after her transformation.

While an expensive mirror, the bedding, and most of the glassware has been destroyed, there are numerous high value oils and incenses as well as a crystal frog, an exotic selection of dresses, and a few chests full of gold and silver coins. The coins are quickly counted and valued at 1200 gold in mixed currency.

Appraise: DC 20

Highlight to display spoiler: {You figure the value of the art objects and dresses are pretty static. As trade goods, they retain their value well, which you appraise at nearly 3000 gold.}

The cabin is fairly spartan by comparison. There is a small wash-basin, some clothes, a bed, and a chest which contains mostly non-perishable foods.

Perception: DC 18

Highlight to display spoiler: {The bottom panel of the treasure chest is a fake! You can remove it to reveal a small hole in the floor.}

Runus himself also has a number of possessions. His bracers, headband, and his boots all radiate as magical under the detect magic spell, as does a coil of rope from inside his bag. The book he carried appears magical as well, those this might be no surprise.

With the chamber searched, take a moment to describe your actions. Devlin has put the ball in the parties court, but is certain that one way or another he can use the oils you found as the material component for his Re-incarnation spell, either in it's usual use or as a way to summon Gargul. There also remains the option of using the Daemon of the Stone Festival!

DM OOC: If no clear majority vote is reached on the Tersers immediate fate, Devlin will realize he has autonomy from the Grim Guard to make the decision for himself. It may require multiple posts, but I want a decision reached today/tonight on how you go about rezzing Terser. Warren has sat out long enough =)

So while he would normally go for making a deal, he doesn't have that knowledge of the dangers. Above all, he wouldn't want to endanger the rest of the party, and if trying to make a second deal would do that, he would be against it.

Also, been working on a PrC - posted in BGC, would appreciate any input to make it stronger and more fitting with the Wold =)

Devlin listens to the groups concerns before making a decision.

I'm not sure what the right course is to do but I don't think another encounter with Gargul be wise at this time. I intend to reincarnate Terser in whatever form The Scab allows. If you feel I am in error leave now so you are not part of this.

Devlin goes over to the dead body of Runus and grabs the book. Someone check this and see if its a necromantic book, if so I am going to use it during the ritual. Bring Runus' body over here as well.

As he passes one of the undead creatures he nods at it. Bring that too.

The Druid than grabs the oils and begins to prepare Terser's body for the ceremony. As he does he beings the process of attuning himself to the land. His eyes glaze over and his motions become automatic. As he finishes with the oils he lays out the bodies and the book. First the zombie than Runus finally the book of death. Looking up at the group the Druid says in a detached voice. I plan to burn these three as an offering to Gargul for the offense I am about to commit to him. The smell will probably be quite foul. Now please give me room.

The Druid paces a circle around Terser and the offerings stopping intuitively at the four cardinal directions to sprinkle a few drops of oil. With the circle complete he steps within and stands before the offerings with the last drops of oil he spreads it among the bodies and book.. Gargul God of Death and Life, I offer to you these things in atonement for what I am about to do. I humbly kneel at your mercy, let my offerings please you that I may bring our fallen comrade back to fight at our side.

Devlin kneels before the offerings and summons forth a flame to his hands.I offer you this foul undead creature to show you that we have not forgotten our promises and we will strike down any and all abominations to your name. The druid cast two balls of flame at the zombie causing it to burn. I offer you a practitioner of the necromantic arts to prove that we will hunt the undead to its source to wipe it out. Devlin casts two more balls of flame at the body of Runus setting the torn body alight. Finally I offer to you a book of necromantic learning, may it please you that we eradicate any mention of how to create the creatures known as undead. Devlin flings three final balls of flame at the book its pages quickly catching

The druid than stands and goes to Terser's body laying in the center of the circle. As he approaches he begins a chant, centering himself and attuning himself with the life and land around him. Terser, companion of the Grim Guard. You are past the mortal realm and beyond the reach of normal aid. I offer you a link back. The land itself will guide you if you so choose. Terser, battle rager know that this path is not easy and you will be judged by the land. If you prove worthy you will be brought back as a mighty defender of this land. Prove lacking and the land may give you the form of a lesser creature. Terser, friend know that your companions want you back with them. To aid your path I offer up a small spark of myself, something to help light your path. Devlin reaches a crescendo in his chanting and finally slumps down to the floor. He sits before Terser's body providing vigil for his return.

Perception = 17

Devlin prepares Tersers body and his material components, then helps the Grim Guard in settling in for the rest of the night in the cavern below The Scab.

Defenses are set and the night is quiet. Each of the heroes has the chance to reflect on whether they have grown by their latest military exploits, and each feels they gained a little something worth their while.

By and large, the Grim Guard leave the choice of the reincarnation process up to Devlin. He feels that they cannot chance an encounter with Gargul right now and will let the natural powers of The Scab be what revives the fallen Barbarian.

The next morning, when Devlin has had a chance to rest and receive his new spells, he feels ready for the revivification process. He summons balls of flame to consume undead, their master, and a vile spellbook in a token of apology. While Runus and his undead minions burn, the spellbook does not.

At the completion of spell, white pulsing magic leaps from Devlins hands and surrounds Tersers body. The white light seeps into Terser through his skin, eyes, ears and mouth. The glow grows into an earthy shimmering and pulsing of light before Tersers body collapses in upon itself, dust to dust.

The pile of skin colored dust lays inert until a strange and revitalizing wind blows through the caverns, clearing the nostrils of the scent of burning dead. The breeze picks up Tersers remains and carries them into a swirling vortex. When the wind reaches it's pinnacle, then is a bright flash of light, and laying naked on the floor is Terser. His eyes flutter open, and he examines his body groggily. Hairy arms.. stunty legs.. short build.. thank the gods.. he is still a Dwarf!

(The wold uses a slightly different scale, as we don't allow monstrous races other than taurs. 89-100 on our scale is "Return to Original Form.")

[1] You all receive 9, 365 experience, which should put you easily at level 7! go ahead and level, and go make your rolls on the LnB. Devlin, when preparing your spells for today, make note that your 4th level slot was used up for reincarnation please.

Karnas would stay with Terser and Flint, and as the ritual concluded he would nod at Terser: "It is indeed grand to have you back and able to fight again with us." He then looks to the rest of the group. "Although I think we as a group need to establish something. We've had two fights against massed enemies, one where a wall served us well since we remained grouped, and one where we started off split and everyone took a serious hit against a much smaller force."
He looks among the group members, looking to Terser and Flint in particular, as Cark came out of his robes to perch on his shoulder. "I'm mostly still a researcher, so I'm not likely the best at discussing battle strategy, but I think we should construct a plan for how to handle such a encounter in the future. And figure out when we should split up and when we should stick together. I still have silent image and other tools in my arsenal, but upon seeing those hordes, I panicked and just threw up the wall to keep them from those in our group who can't take a hit well."
He turns to Terser "And in regards to Resurrection magic, unless your getting aid from a higher power or a caster much stronger than us, your left weaker than when you were alive, and need a restoration or two over the span of as many weeks to get back to what you were. I certainly can't cast it, but I've seen plenty at the college. Death while alone, or death of age, those are finite, but Death in a group is merely a inconvenience for those who aid the gods and have the gold."
He looks to Flint and nods at him. "And welcome to the group Brother, more Dwarves of armor are always useful. He then turns to the group in general Now, if you'll give me a moment, these fights have given me some new inspiration for new tools to throw in my toolbelt. It will only take a moment or two."

OOC: Character is updated for level 7, and can I swap out one or two of my spells for others or no? A couple of them I saw no use for whatsoever and I'd like to change them to something perhaps more useful.

DM Note: Bonus Post!

It is fairly simple for the Grim Guard to decipher the magical properties of the items found on Runus. He carried the following:

1: Bracers of Armor +3
2: Boots of Striding and Springing
3: Rope of Climbing
4: Headband of Charisma +2

The Grim Guard are less skilled however, at determining the value of dresses and fancy things. This of course, should come as no surprise. With their best guess, they figure they can sell the dresses and knick-nacks for 2400 gold.

At the bottom of the chest, Sam discovers a journal. Taking a moment to read through it, he discovers it is a fairly boring bit of writing, especially to a skilled bard. He does learn however, that Runus was originally in the employ of Fifur Ironbane! Only when Sam flips to a point about 3/4 through the journal does it get interesting again. There is a single word on the page.

"Tali"

From there, Runus spends most of his time writing about the Dwarven princess and his affection for her. A few times it seems, he thinks she might return his affection, but fears his low status is all that stops her from revealing her love. Then comes another entry of note.

"Glorious fortune! I was approached by a man claiming to be from a group called "The Shadow Masters.". He told me he could increase my power over the undead to a level I would never achieve on my own. He claims that with this power I could establish my own small fief in the Scab, and that basically makes me a minor noble. Even a minor noble can petition for a Lords Daughter. This I shall do!

From here there are a few records of Runus and his dealings with the Shadow Masters. Most involve the trade of information, and having new sorcerer spells magically added into his mind. With each trade, Runus gives more damning information about his clan.. troops strengths, movements, lists of key personnel, and magical abilities at it's disposal. Then comes another entry of importance.

"Damn Fifur! He has promised Tali to a Rockbreaker pup! This isn't fair to me or Tali! I know she would love me if only she had the chance! It may be time to dismiss chivalry and let our passions take over! I know a place, the Shadow Masters showed it to me. I can take Tali there and we can be alone together until she decides she loves me. Then we will return together and demand her father recognize our union and my estate!"

The next day.

"I don't know how them damn Shadow Masters knew it, but they were waiting for me in my new cave. Not only that, but they had built Tali a tower and me a cabin in advance! It's like they knew we were coming! I think I made powerful friends, but I should be more careful in my dealings with them. They gave me a book. It contains a number of enchantments for maintaining undead and augmenting them. They say they will give Tali and I all the time we need if I only keep churning out dead. Every now and then, they will show up with some corpses. Fine by me. I'm no gravedigger."

And then.

"This book is full of surprises. I can use it like I was one of them wizard boys. It took me awhile to figure out the writing. Even Read Magic didn't help. They gave me keywords bits at a time as they come visit. That's a good thing. It nearly killed me the first time I opened it. I guess I can use this thing to teleport to them, and they can use it to keep tabs on me. That's fine. They often ask about how things are going both professionally and personally. I may not need to be so suspicious anymore. Things are not going so well with Tali. We fight a lot and she demands return to her da' and will say naught else..."

Another entry is scribbled hard and fast. The paper has ripped in a few places and there are blotches that likely came from broken quills.

"I've no more soul and heart than those damned undead moaning about outside my door! How could I? I dunnae want to blame Tali, but not only did she invite me to her tower she was a'modeling them damned dresses for me all night! She served me wine! I confessed why I had taken her.. love .. and she laughed in my face! I felt a little dizzy.. the shrew had tried to poison me! It didn't work and I lost control... whether it be the wine or the drug or just heartless lust.. I took her... against her will. I am a monster."

Then a final entry.

"She's been screaming for days. Its maddening. I swear I'll rip off my own ears if it stops the keenin' and wailin'. The Masters say I cannae let her out yet, not till she stabilizes. How did I make such a mess of things? I have a sneaky bit o' thoughts that blame the Masters, but I am not sure. Tali has told me she is with child. She also told me she will strangle the babe with it's cord when born and she will kill herself after. I pleaded with her to see reason, but she will not. Then a few weeks ago during a visit from the Shadow Masters she was ..mangled.. by zombies. I wasn't there, but accordin' to them she tried to stab one of them with a hairpin. It's undead responded and ripped her throat and sides open. Ta' save the babe, I gave them permission to turn Tali undead. They said that she would be somewhere in between, with the Babes life holding back her own undeath and they would find a cure for her condition. They also said she would be a higher form of undead in the meantime. One tha' keeps it's memories and emotions. Intelligent undead they called it. I had no choice.. but.. I think I've signed my loves life to the devils of the dark. "
