There are less of them now, but their blows are wearing me down. I'd be dead if not for those wands.

Braugh finally shows signs of tiring, and misses his enemies completely.

Sam continues to be the lifeline of healing for his group. His small wand has kept several Grim Guard alive and well in this encounter!

Devlins continues to bleed, and Raeb heroically tries to help her master. She knocks a large chunk from her target, but it still stands! She takes an attack of opportunity from z2 as she leaves, but it misses.

Flint takes the space the bear abandoned, and can now fight freely without taking attacks as he draws arrows! His arrows pin the dead enemy to the floor, and it stirs no more!

Karnas also heals, perhaps sensing that his life might be tied to that of the newly met fighter on his side of the cave!

That which is dead..
Tuesday August 13th, 2013 1:14:59 PM

The Grim Guard, working together, finally down the rest of the surging undead. Flints arrows take two through the eye, shattering the onyx gemstones that pulse unlife into their bodies. Braugh and Raeb work together, a pairing not seen in some time, and shatter the host of dead threatening the fallen Devlin, who is wounded but stable. Sam kneels protectively over his charge as bone chips fly.

As you finally catch your breath, you hear the dwarf north of you spitting curses at the tower door, which has begun thumping and shuddering under the weight of an enormous force.

He spits on the ground, then raises his hand in the air, wielding a thick midnight blue spellbook. "Come on out Lass, come on out and obey!"

THUMP.

"Do as I command woman! Watch as I destroy your would-be rescuers! They'll na come between us!"

Thump. Thump.

.... silence...

Only the magical energies crackling at the Dwarfs fingertips makes any sound. His mad grin stretches from ear to ear.

"That's right me'love. Now come to yer mans side and watch. Come to Runus!"

Runus invokes the crisp and wordy language of abjuration, and releases the arcane locks on the tower door. It crashes open as three dwarven zombies swarm over him, battering him with their fists.

"Tali! Help me! What are these bloody fools doing! Tali! Help me love!

It is then, that Tali Ironbane, Princess of the Ironbane Clan, emerges from her tower. Her fists are rolled into quivering balls of rage, and her raven hair is wild and unkempt. Her crown still rests atop her head, and black eyes full of hatred roll slowly over Runus and the zombies that have engulfed him.

She slowly runs her clawed hands over grey skin, tapping them lightly against her round and swollen belly, already thick with child. She moans pitifully while looking at Runus, raking her claws over her stomach. She watches a thick oozy ichor seep from the wound and splash to the floor, then throws her head back and screams with rage!

She takes two quick steps towards Runus and flings the first zombie off of the dwarf and into the side of her tower prison. It slaps against the tower with a sickening crack and slides broken to the cave floor. She grabs the remaining two and bashes them together until they go limp in her arms, then hurls them into the walls of the cavern. Runus looks up at Tali horrified, and begins to scramble backwards and away. He screams in unbridled terror, and Tali screams back.

"RUUUNUUUUSSS!"

Tali spreads her arms and wails in anguish, screaming a lifetime of hate and suffering at the fleeing sorcerer. Her shoulders pop and crackle and her jaw elongates beyond what should have been it's physical limits. Her keening wail pulses with foul energy, slamming into the Grim Guard like a giants fist, as cold as the icy touch of Gargul himself.

Undeath in all it's foul permanence now stalks towards Runus and you for that matter. Her black gaze is locked only on the blubbering sorcerer, pointing an accusing finger at the Dwarf as she bears down on him. He crawls towards you, begging for help and mercy. It is clear she will overtake him, unless you can intervene.

Flint watches in terror as what appears to have once been a dwarven princess distorts before them and screams at her prey. He is paralysed with fear and stands staring, mouth open, at a sight he never dreamt of encountering.

That which is dead..
Wednesday August 14th, 2013 3:31:09 AM

Sams aim is true and his bolt punctures the dread princess through her throat.Tali gives pause and considers Sam for a long, terrifying moment. She caresses the bolt in her neck with a clawed hand, then snaps the shaft. Her skin re-knits quickly, pushing the weapon out of her body and into the ground.

She steps over the terrified Runus. Where once she saw limitless passion and desire, her black eyes now gaze upon fear, weakness, and terror. She growls... a peculiar sound that almost resembles a throaty purr, and straddles Runus, drawing blood as she traces her claws down his chest and over his heart. Then she pulls back her arm and condemns to hell one terrified sorcerer who perhaps painted too much on the canvas of undeath.

"Tali! P..please no! It wasn't my fault! It was the necromancers! I didn't know! Please by the Gods Tali don't do it plea...u..urgh.."

Tali's hand plunges into Runus, and as his hot blood washes over them both his final pleas for mercy die on uncaring ears. When she draws her arm back, it is covered in gore up to the elbow. Runus is no more, and his heart beats it's last in the hand of the one who held it for so long while he was alive. Perhaps unlike before however, that made no difference to Tali. Her passions had been replaced by new desires, only of which had not been fulfilled. His heart was simply a bit of flesh to be shaken off and flicked against the cavern wall.

Tali looks at you, then begins running. Her bare feet slap against the cavern floors until she reaches your line. An agile leap and she sails over your heads, running behind you at a speed hasted by the surge of undead power brought on by taking revenge on one of her murderers. She screams another name, shrieking at the top of her lungs as she runs for the exit.

"Kaaaadisss!"

Runus is dead on the floor before you. As your fears fade with the swift retreat of Tali, the Dead Princess of the Ironbane Clan, you feel weary with battle fatigue and sensory overload. Other than Runus, the cave room contains the newly opened tower which had once held Tali. There is also a large cabin-like structure, presumably a living quarters. There is also the recovery of Tersers body and some decisions to be made concerning his revival.

With a day of rest, Devlin could cast a re-incarnation spell. The Grim Guard are no stranger to Gargul, and know that they can either beseech him directly and petition Tersers return, or they can attempt to simply rely on Druidic powers alone, and resurrect their fallen comrade without Garguls explicit permission. Perhaps worthy of consideration are certain pacts or deals struck with Gargul in the past that may or may not have been honored.

Then again, it is possible someone at the Festival could try and raise Terser, but the most powerful spell caster there would be the prophet-daemon who sent them here in the first place. He most certainly would opt to avoid Gargul completely. Powers are a stubborn lot, even minor ones, and they tend to rub Gods the wrong way when possible.

(Just let me know your choice when you make it and we can proceed! You are out of combat now, and the cavern is yours to use or explore as you see fit.)

Devlin wakes as Sam heals him. He stands unsteady on his feet but is resolved to stay upright. He pats Raeb on her shaggy head, silently thanking her for her protection.

He makes his way over to the group and Terser's body. Makin' demands of gods are we now Sam? He says with a bit of levity in his voice. Aye we removed a large collection of abominations from the Wold but I don' know if that gives us the right ta demand a life back, again.

Devlin rubs his chin thoughtfully and realizes his mouth is covered in blood and gore. He summons more waters to clean himself and any anyone else who needs it.

I dunno lads we still have promises we made ta Him that we have not been able ta fulfill. The powers of the Scab are strong here and I may be able ta bring him back, but.... We risk pissin' Gargul off, bringin' Terser back as something other than a Dwarf, which might piss Terser off. Lots of risks.

Karnas followed the group to Terser's corpse. "He did fight well for the cause, but I would side with Devlin. If you've already asked Gargul to bring back someone and have not fulfilled your side of the bargain, it would not be wise to attract further attention. He may just ask you to perform a action that would be more than just a inconvenience.

I don't know if you should call Gargul or just try and reincarnate Terser. Reincarnate has a hefty cost to return what is lost from it, and he'd still likely be in a different form. I personally wouldn't mind the chance to experiment, but it's not my place to make that decision for another. If you have petitioned Gargul recently and left his bargain unfulfilled however, I'd best suggest fulfilling it before you call him. Attracting the Ire of gods is never a good idea. He may decide that since you didn't think his last task was so important, he'll actually give you something important to do that you can't wait on and very possibly will result in more than one death."

Without a clear consensus the Grim Guard decides to take a small break from their discussion. Unwilling to leave before the situation is resolved, they decide to explore the caverns, checking both the tower and the cabin.

The Tower is lavishly furnished, with several expensive looking paintings and prettily crafted nick-knacks. The decadence is starkly contrasted by what you can only imagine by a destructive bent caused by Tali after her transformation.

While an expensive mirror, the bedding, and most of the glassware has been destroyed, there are numerous high value oils and incenses as well as a crystal frog, an exotic selection of dresses, and a few chests full of gold and silver coins. The coins are quickly counted and valued at 1200 gold in mixed currency.

Appraise: DC 20

Highlight to display spoiler: {You figure the value of the art objects and dresses are pretty static. As trade goods, they retain their value well, which you appraise at nearly 3000 gold.}

The cabin is fairly spartan by comparison. There is a small wash-basin, some clothes, a bed, and a chest which contains mostly non-perishable foods.

Perception: DC 18

Highlight to display spoiler: {The bottom panel of the treasure chest is a fake! You can remove it to reveal a small hole in the floor.}

Runus himself also has a number of possessions. His bracers, headband, and his boots all radiate as magical under the detect magic spell, as does a coil of rope from inside his bag. The book he carried appears magical as well, those this might be no surprise.

With the chamber searched, take a moment to describe your actions. Devlin has put the ball in the parties court, but is certain that one way or another he can use the oils you found as the material component for his Re-incarnation spell, either in it's usual use or as a way to summon Gargul. There also remains the option of using the Daemon of the Stone Festival!

DM OOC: If no clear majority vote is reached on the Tersers immediate fate, Devlin will realize he has autonomy from the Grim Guard to make the decision for himself. It may require multiple posts, but I want a decision reached today/tonight on how you go about rezzing Terser. Warren has sat out long enough =)

Above all, he wouldn't want to endanger the rest of the party, and if trying to make a second deal would do that, he would be against it.

Also, been working on a PrC - posted in BGC, would appreciate any input to make it stronger and more fitting with the Wold =)

Devlin listens to the groups concerns before making a decision.

I'm not sure what the right course is to do but I don't think another encounter with Gargul be wise at this time. I intend to reincarnate Terser in whatever form The Scab allows. If you feel I am in error leave now so you are not part of this.

Devlin goes over to the dead body of Runus and grabs the book. Someone check this and see if its a necromantic book, if so I am going to use it during the ritual. Bring Runus' body over here as well.

As he passes one of the undead creatures he nods at it. Bring that too.

The Druid than grabs the oils and begins to prepare Terser's body for the ceremony. As he does he beings the process of attuning himself to the land. His eyes glaze over and his motions become automatic. As he finishes with the oils he lays out the bodies and the book. First the zombie than Runus finally the book of death. Looking up at the group the Druid says in a detached voice. I plan to burn these three as an offering to Gargul for the offense I am about to commit to him. The smell will probably be quite foul. Now please give me room.

The Druid paces a circle around Terser and the offerings stopping intuitively at the four cardinal directions to sprinkle a few drops of oil. With the circle complete he steps within and stands before the offerings with the last drops of oil he spreads it among the bodies and book.. Gargul God of Death and Life, I offer to you these things in atonement for what I am about to do. I humbly kneel at your mercy, let my offerings please you that I may bring our fallen comrade back to fight at our side.

Devlin kneels before the offerings and summons forth a flame to his hands.I offer you this foul undead creature to show you that we have not forgotten our promises and we will strike down any and all abominations to your name. The druid cast two balls of flame at the zombie causing it to burn. I offer you a practitioner of the necromantic arts to prove that we will hunt the undead to its source to wipe it out. Devlin casts two more balls of flame at the body of Runus setting the torn body alight. Finally I offer to you a book of necromantic learning, may it please you that we eradicate any mention of how to create the creatures known as undead. Devlin flings three final balls of flame at the book its pages quickly catching

The druid than stands and goes to Terser's body laying in the center of the circle. As he approaches he begins a chant, centering himself and attuning himself with the life and land around him. Terser, companion of the Grim Guard. You are past the mortal realm and beyond the reach of normal aid. I offer you a link back. The land itself will guide you if you so choose. Terser, battle rager know that this path is not easy and you will be judged by the land. If you prove worthy you will be brought back as a mighty defender of this land. Prove lacking and the land may give you the form of a lesser creature. Terser, friend know that your companions want you back with them. To aid your path I offer up a small spark of myself, something to help light your path. Devlin reaches a crescendo in his chanting and finally slumps down to the floor. He sits before Terser's body providing vigil for his return.

Perception = 17

Devlin prepares Tersers body and his material components, then helps the Grim Guard in settling in for the rest of the night in the cavern below The Scab.

Defenses are set and the night is quiet. Each of the heroes has the chance to reflect on whether they have grown by their latest military exploits, and each feels they gained a little something worth their while.

By and large, the Grim Guard leave the choice of the reincarnation process up to Devlin. He feels that they cannot chance an encounter with Gargul right now and will let the natural powers of The Scab be what revives the fallen Barbarian.

The next morning, when Devlin has had a chance to rest and receive his new spells, he feels ready for the revivification process. He summons balls of flame to consume undead, their master, and a vile spellbook in a token of apology. While Runus and his undead minions burn, the spellbook does not.

At the completion of spell, white pulsing magic leaps from Devlins hands and surrounds Tersers body. The white light seeps into Terser through his skin, eyes, ears and mouth. The glow grows into an earthy shimmering and pulsing of light before Tersers body collapses in upon itself, dust to dust.

The pile of skin colored dust lays inert until a strange and revitalizing wind blows through the caverns, clearing the nostrils of the scent of burning dead. The breeze picks up Tersers remains and carries them into a swirling vortex. When the wind reaches it's pinnacle, then is a bright flash of light, and laying naked on the floor is Terser. His eyes flutter open, and he examines his body groggily. Hairy arms.. stunty legs.. short build.. thank the gods.. he is still a Dwarf!

(The wold uses a slightly different scale, as we don't allow monstrous races other than taurs. 89-100 on our scale is "Return to Original Form.")

[1] You all receive 9, 365 experience, which should put you easily at level 7! go ahead and level, and go make your rolls on the LnB. Devlin, when preparing your spells for today, make note that your 4th level slot was used up for reincarnation please.

[2] Terser: Gain 2 negative levels. These are permanent. This means -10 HP, -2 to all skills checks and saves, and you can only restore 1 negative level per week with a casting of Restoration.

"Welcome back friend." he says to Terser.

"Welcome Flint, we are glad to have you... I am Bruagh Stormbringer... we are the Grim Guard."

Will try to level over the weekend.

Terser (Warren G) 2 negative levels: HP 67/67 {HP 77/77 - AC 21/13/21 - CMD 23 (raging HP 91/91, AC 19/11/19 - CMD 25)}

ooc: haha, I was preparing a big lamenting speech about how I couldn't see in the dark anymore and would need a fancy belt like Sam's. Can't complain though =D

Ach, it's so dark here. Though at least it's quiet right now. Flint, is it? Glad to see you survived, guess my glorious charge accomplished something.

He tries to stand, but stumbles a bit, feeling an uncharacteristic weakness in his limbs.

I feel strange. Tougher, but weaker at the same time. Is that some effect of the spell? And by the way, thanks to ye, Devlin, for risking yerself to bring me back. Gargul didn't rake ye over the coals too badly, did he?

Realizing he's standing naked in front of a stranger, he looks around for his equipment, and eases himself into his clothes and armor, feeling much better once he is again encased in good steel. He also contemplates what he learned while he was in the afterlife, and begins to plan what is necessary to achieve his new purpose.

Terser (Warren G) 2 negative levels: HP 72/72 {HP 82/82 - AC 21/13/21 - CMD 23 (raging HP 96/96, AC 19/11/19 - CMD 25)}

Devlin smiles as Terser steps forth from the ashes of his old body. Glad ta have ya back lad. Looks like The Scab decided ye are worthy ta still be a Dwarf, I knew you would be up to it. He pats his lost friend on the back before walking over to gather his things. He looks at the new comer and nods. Flint ye said, my name is Devlin. Glad we could help ya, how in the abyss did ye end up in that casket?

Now that everyone is back on their feet lets find out what we got here and than head back. We still have some sad news ta deliver. The druid walks over the the book he tried to burn and looks at it quizzically. We need ta figure out whats in this ta make it so protected.

Karnas would stay with Terser and Flint, and as the ritual concluded he would nod at Terser: "It is indeed grand to have you back and able to fight again with us." He then looks to the rest of the group. "Although I think we as a group need to establish something. We've had two fights against massed enemies, one where a wall served us well since we remained grouped, and one where we started off split and everyone took a serious hit against a much smaller force."
He looks among the group members, looking to Terser and Flint in particular, as Cark came out of his robes to perch on his shoulder. "I'm mostly still a researcher, so I'm not likely the best at discussing battle strategy, but I think we should construct a plan for how to handle such a encounter in the future. And figure out when we should split up and when we should stick together. I still have silent image and other tools in my arsenal, but upon seeing those hordes, I panicked and just threw up the wall to keep them from those in our group who can't take a hit well."
He turns to Terser "And in regards to Resurrection magic, unless your getting aid from a higher power or a caster much stronger than us, your left weaker than when you were alive, and need a restoration or two over the span of as many weeks to get back to what you were. I certainly can't cast it, but I've seen plenty at the college. Death while alone, or death of age, those are finite, but Death in a group is merely a inconvenience for those who aid the gods and have the gold."
He looks to Flint and nods at him. "And welcome to the group Brother, more Dwarves of armor are always useful. He then turns to the group in general Now, if you'll give me a moment, these fights have given me some new inspiration for new tools to throw in my toolbelt. It will only take a moment or two."

OOC: Character is updated for level 7, and can I swap out one or two of my spells for others or no? A couple of them I saw no use for whatsoever and I'd like to change them to something perhaps more useful.

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 14 -- HP 55/55

"Karnas. Help me appraise and identify these items."

ooc-Please add a +3 bonus to each of your appraise and spellcraft rolls. Sam will give you a inspire competence for each roll.

Karnas nodded, casting identify on himself "Fair warning, I'm not great at appraisals" He then looks over the items in turn, attempting to identify the magic items or appraise the non-magical

OOC: the 24s are identify, the 10s are appraise. I don't know how many of each we need, so I'm going to just make 10 of either

That which is dead..

DM Note: Bonus Post!

It is fairly simple for the Grim Guard to decipher the magical properties of the items found on Runus. He carried the following:

1: Bracers of Armor +3
2: Boots of Striding and Springing
3: Rope of Climbing
4: Headband of Charisma +2

The Grim Guard are less skilled however, at determining the value of dresses and fancy things. This of course, should come as no surprise. With their best guess, they figure they can sell the dresses and knick-nacks for 2400 gold.

At the bottom of the chest, Sam discovers a journal. Taking a moment to read through it, he discovers it is a fairly boring bit of writing, especially to a skilled bard. He does learn however, that Runus was originally in the employ of Fifur Ironbane! Only when Sam flips to a point about 3/4 through the journal does it get interesting again. There is a single word on the page.

"Tali"

From there, Runus spends most of his time writing about the Dwarven princess and his affection for her. A few times it seems, he thinks she might return his affection, but fears his low status is all that stops her from revealing her love. Then comes another entry of note.

"Glorious fortune! I was approached by a man claiming to be from a group called "The Shadow Masters.". He told me he could increase my power over the undead to a level I would never achieve on my own. He claims that with this power I could establish my own small fief in the Scab, and that basically makes me a minor noble. Even a minor noble can petition for a Lords Daughter. This I shall do!

From here there are a few records of Runus and his dealings with the Shadow Masters. Most involve the trade of information, and having new sorcerer spells magically added into his mind. With each trade, Runus gives more damning information about his clan.. troops strengths, movements, lists of key personnel, and magical abilities at it's disposal. Then comes another entry of importance.

"Damn Fifur! He has promised Tali to a Rockbreaker pup! This isn't fair to me or Tali! I know she would love me if only she had the chance! It may be time to dismiss chivalry and let our passions take over! I know a place, the Shadow Masters showed it to me. I can take Tali there and we can be alone together until she decides she loves me. Then we will return together and demand her father recognize our union and my estate!"

The next day.

"I don't know how them damn Shadow Masters knew it, but they were waiting for me in my new cave. Not only that, but they had built Tali a tower and me a cabin in advance! It's like they knew we were coming! I think I made powerful friends, but I should be more careful in my dealings with them. They gave me a book. It contains a number of enchantments for maintaining undead and augmenting them. They say they will give Tali and I all the time we need if I only keep churning out dead. Every now and then, they will show up with some corpses. Fine by me. I'm no gravedigger."

And then.

"This book is full of surprises. I can use it like I was one of them wizard boys. It took me awhile to figure out the writing. Even Read Magic didn't help. They gave me keywords bits at a time as they come visit. That's a good thing. It nearly killed me the first time I opened it. I guess I can use this thing to teleport to them, and they can use it to keep tabs on me. That's fine. They often ask about how things are going both professionally and personally. I may not need to be so suspicious anymore. Things are not going so well with Tali. We fight a lot and she demands return to her da' and will say naught else..."

Another entry is scribbled hard and fast. The paper has ripped in a few places and there are blotches that likely came from broken quills.

"I've no more soul and heart than those damned undead moaning about outside my door! How could I? I dunnae want to blame Tali, but not only did she invite me to her tower she was a'modeling them damned dresses for me all night! She served me wine! I confessed why I had taken her.. love .. and she laughed in my face! I felt a little dizzy.. the shrew had tried to poison me! It didn't work and I lost control... whether it be the wine or the drug or just heartless lust.. I took her... against her will. I am a monster."

Then a final entry.

"She's been screaming for days. Its maddening. I swear I'll rip off my own ears if it stops the keenin' and wailin'. The Masters say I cannae let her out yet, not till she stabilizes. How did I make such a mess of things? I have a sneaky bit o' thoughts that blame the Masters, but I am not sure. Tali has told me she is with child. She also told me she will strangle the babe with it's cord when born and she will kill herself after. I pleaded with her to see reason, but she will not. Then a few weeks ago during a visit from the Shadow Masters she was ..mangled.. by zombies. I wasn't there, but accordin' to them she tried to stab one of them with a hairpin. It's undead responded and ripped her throat and sides open. Ta' save the babe, I gave them permission to turn Tali undead. They said that she would be somewhere in between, with the Babes life holding back her own undeath and they would find a cure for her condition. They also said she would be a higher form of undead in the meantime. One tha' keeps it's memories and emotions. Intelligent undead they called it. I had no choice.. but.. I think I've signed my loves life to the devils of the dark. "
