As you survey the aftermath of your battle, you have a kind of good news-bad news situation. The good news is that you spotted the ambush in time. The bad news is that you've had to use precious resources to heal yourselves, and one of the ambushers got away. Is he returning with reinforcements? Impossible to say.
Of course, you do have a prisoner. You also have lots of bodies with gear on them, which may or may not be worth a look.
Toregan wants to track down the escapee. You can make the attempt, but you know you can't do it with a prisoner in tow. You'll either have to kill him, or leave him here. Or split up. Or just let the escapee go.
What would you like to do next?

"What do we do with their remains? What if we just drag them to Town... or would that be too provocative...?"
DM Kathy Monday September 2nd, 2013 7:47:05 PM Ragnarök isn't sure whether it would be better to question the ambusher you've captured, or go after the other one. He does suggest that this one could be let go, if Rag first puts a Mark of Justice on him.
Asteron, too, is unsure.
Faust points out that going after the escapee, desirable though it would be, just isn't practical. You've got too much to do here, and it shouldn't be left undone. Toregan reluctantly agrees.
So, you begin searching through the ambushers' gear. You find some good stuff. Exactly what good stuff you find is going to have to wait until Steven tells me which one got away. You're not getting his gear. :)
You also have a prisoner to question.

Looking through the gear, you find 4 small vials of liquid, four nice sets of armor (one leather, two studded leather, one chain shirt), and several nice weapons. There are two rapiers, two punching daggers, two composite longbows, a woodsman's axe, and a longsword. You also find a set of very nice thieves' tools, and some coins and jewelry.
Ragnarök asks about what to expect in Town.
"It ain't just Town no more," the man says. "It's Wathe's Freehold now. Boss Wathe is in charge. If you're smart, you'll stay away."
Further questioned, he admits that no further ambushes are planned, although he indicates that Boss Wathe still has some "boys" who could make trouble for you if you make trouble for them. He readily admits that he is/was working for Boss Wathe, and that he and his companions were sent to stop you from reaching Wathe's Freehold.
"Boss Wathe ain't too happy with you boys," he concludes.

No single man should control this Town in my eyes, they should elect a committee or a Governor with a council of an even number. Or am I confused of our goals? Are we trying to control this Town? From what I gather it seems we are trying to rid the Town of Waithe and allow them their own lives, peacefully living beside the Post and working together to the prosperity of the Thunder Lands?
He allows another sigh to leave his lips as he finishes speaking. He looks to the sky, spreading his arms out just a bit to enjoy the breeze. I wonder if these people have even thought about what they are trying to accomplish beside stopping the attacks on the Post. Hopefully I've said enough to make them think, without over stepping... DM Kathy Monday September 9th, 2013 9:09:09 PM Asteron proposes approaching the town stealthily, and Toregan agrees.
However, Yngvar points out that, from a distance, you are the same as any other travelers. Za'Reed proposes posing as merchants, and suggests piling some more stuff onto the mule to add authenticity.
You approach, therefore, trying to be inconspicuous rather than stealthy. It does seem to be working; there's no response to your approach.
As you reach the boundary of the town, you see a simple wooden sign:
WATHE'S FREEHOLD MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
You continue past, onto a dusty main street. To your left is a small shop building that seems to be vacant. Next to it is another shop, this one with a crudely-painted sign in front of it: OTTO'S THINGS TO BUY.
To your right is a long, low building, with a rather nice green-and-gold sign. It shows a traveler sleeping on a haystack, his bundle by his side. The sign says THE WEARY WAYFARER INN.
There are other buildings further in, but you can't quite see what they are.

The ones who are armed have a knife or cudgel, and nobody seems to make a big deal about it.
Asteron is interested in going further, but Yngvar proposes stopping at the inn to arrange the night's accommodations.
Ragnarök is a little alarmed by the absence of guards, and tries to see whether anyone is spying on the group. He doesn't see anyone.
Toregan points out that the innkeeper may have some information, and Za'Reed thinks it would be a good idea to ask around before confronting Wathe.
Since a small majority seem to favor stopping at the inn, you step inside.
You find yourselves in a small common room. It's a warm afternoon, so there's no fire in the fireplace, but there are windows open to catch a breeze. Simple wooden chairs and tables are arranged neatly, and are currently unoccupied. There is a bar at the far end of the room, and the woman behind it calls out a friendly greeting. Her proportions seem off, and then you realize--she is a Halfling, probably standing on a stool or something.
Now that you're inside, you can smell that dinner is cooking, and it smells delicious.

Faust isn't sure whether the food is poisoned, but points out it seems unlikely.
For any who want it, the halfling woman brings out a bowl of soup, a plate of bread and cheese, and a pint of ale for 2 silver pieces. The food is not only very good, it is also artfully displayed when it arrives. The bread is in even slices, as is the cheese, and each plate has precisely-placed dollops of butter and jam for the bread. The food is delicious--and not poisoned--and the ale is good. He then turns to Asteron with a smirky expression, "Say, Worldtraveller, would you be against disguising your golden horns in some fashion?"
"Given how different both trios' compositions would look from the description they should have of us, your unique feature is the only detail that'd give us away. But fear not, my plan is to merely prestidigitate them to an ivory color, nothing else."

And before you get all paranoid-gamer on me, you can see that she is telling the truth. Her anxiety is a normal innkeeper's worry that if she sells you some meat or a bottle of wine, she may regret it next month when she has nothing for her customers.

In the market square, there are a few merchants set up. You can easily spot the booth belonging to Chale and Madda, the weavers Blossom spoke of. They have several samples on display, and chat easily with passers-by. There is also a Halfling set up with a small cart; the sign on the cart says "Polestaff's Pickles." Ragnarök keeps an eye out, and does see a rather well-armed man giving the party the once-over. He goes into the Town Hall.

"Wolfgang, you're to keep an eye out on master Hefnd over here and my other companions, if anything happens to any of them, especially something bad, do make me know of it."
When asked about the spell for disguise, "Unfortunately, that would be a negative...the Alter Self spell only lasts for couple minutes, so it's really only ever useful for some extra strength or dexterity of another race or for ambushes...I could make you look like another of your race, but prestidigitating your horns will be much less taxing on my arcane reserves, will last about as much and, unless mr. T happens to have clinical eye to minotaur physique, should give the exact same result."
"Don't worry, the effect is temporary and I can easily dispell it once its effect is no longer desired."
Before both groups split, he casts Message to keep communications up and then uses Prestidigitation to color Asteron's golden horns to an ivory-like coloration with darkened ends.
He then whispers, over the link established by Message: (("If at all possible, let's not strand too far from each other, though it is not necessary to keep eye contact. You split up and stroll casually around the market square. Here is your map.
The gray buildings surrounding the square are houses. The ones on the east side of the square are a little bit bigger and nicer than the others. Boss Wathe has probably claimed one of them, but you don't know which one.
Aside from the weavers, the pickle vendor, and the general merchants, you see a few people whom you take to be local farmers selling in the market square.
The North Road and the South Road lead away from the town, although you can see that there are houses along each road. The houses out on these roads are farther apart, with room for cultivated land.
Miss Sussy's is a rather gaudily-painted building with a gilt-edged sign out front.
You get some curious stares, but nothing more than you would normally expect, being strangers new to town.
Za'Reed is all for going straight to the Town Hall and confronting Boss Wathe right away, but Ragnarök thinks a more cautious approach is warranted. It might be a good idea to get some more information before heading to Town Hall.

Toregan motions over to the market square. "I'd start asking the temporary merchants here, since they'd be in much the same boat we're in, and they might've dealt with Waithe before. If we're still undetected by the time we're done there, we could ask the local merchants, and see if they've got any useful information for us." Toregan shrugs at Rag's observation. "Well, we did lose track of one of his goons at the bridge remember? If he reported back, then they're probably expecting trouble. I'd be surprised If they don't suspect us already."

Faust sets out to check on the weavers' wares.
Asteron is a bit preoccupied with his no-longer-golden horns, but does suggest that Faust do some talking.
Ragnarök checks out some of the buildings as he passes. The livery is unremarkable; the street-side door is open and you catch a glimpse of stalls and horses. Miss Sussy's is more difficult; there aren't ground-level windows--at least not on this side. There are windows on the upper level. One of them opens, and a very friendly lady leans out and waves to you.
Yngvar, too, is interested in Miss Sussy's and wonders aloud whether any of the friendly ladies might be willing to come over (to the Trading Post, I assume?).
The female weaver smiles as Faust approaches. "Good afternoon, sir," she says. "New in town?" Up close, you can see that the weavings on display include many blankets, a few shawls, and some bolts of cloth. All are of good quality, but more than that, they are interesting. Different kinds of fibers woven together, complex patterns, varying textures. This is the kind of thing you don't see every day.

Za walks towards the the weavers with everyone, and chuckles a bit when Asteron checks his reflection. admiring your new look ey big guy? Za is used to being around merchants, and knows that normally they've a few things to say about the boss, good or bad. So, as he casually looks at the weavers wares he smiles as he and begins talking.
I must say, you've got some nice things here. Something tells me the prices are reasonable? , any chance you've got something that might protect a book from minor wear? Za then points to two random items and asks for prices, regardless of the price he will act a bit surprised at how expensive it is. I thought for sure you wouldn't ask so much. Id guess the boss asks for a bit of your profit? Actually, what kind of man is Mr "Waithe"? Or is that just the Towns name? I assume Waithes Freehold was named after the boss right?
If the weaver does have the "book protector" Za will purchase it, adding two gold a tip, This is for you, not to be added in with sales my friend. What was your name? Dar'Fien at your service, Im new to the Freehold, and have a few questions, and in search of a friend as well. He gives another warm smile, and begins with his questions. How does one go about getting permission to set up a stand within the town limits. Does he live among everyone? Are the taxes fair? Can anyone cultivate their land to feed their family? Or would boss man require a cut of your crops as well as taxes?
As Za inquires he gives time for answers, his tone remains curious, not interrogative. He pans over items, absently inspecting each with feigned interest, always looking into the weavers eyes as they answer, nodding with a smile.

DM Kathy Sunday September 22nd, 2013 9:18:26 PM Za'Reed approaches the weavers. One piece immediately catches his eye--a blanket in shades of cream, brown, and black, with an abstract, flowing pattern and varying textures. It is a beautiful piece. Seeing his interest, Madda pulls it down from the rack and spreads it for inspection. "It's an interesting piece, don't you think? Linen, and sheep's wool, and goat hair, and a few other things as well. We're asking 50 gold for it."
50 gold is kind of steep, but it's as much a work of art as a blanket.
"Or, we've some plainer bolts of good cloth, just ready to be made into shirts or whatever you may need." She displays a linen bolt, dyed a soft, mossy green. "This is 7 gold pieces per yard, or you can have the bolt for 60." Yeah, on the steep side, but not unreasonably so.
Za asks about Boss Wathe. "Oh." She seems somewhat taken aback. "Oh, well, yes, we do pay a percentage of our sales to the town."
"And we're happy to do it," her husband puts in hastily. "Boss Wathe keeps an eye on things here; stops trouble before it starts. We don't want no trouble."
"Indeed," Madda agrees. "It's a nice place to live; Boss Wathe keeps it that way. Of course, we're happy to pay our share."
Asteron looks for somebody selling wine, but there doesn't seem to be a wine-merchant here.
Toregan approaches the peddlers. "Sure, we got rope and sunrods," the shorter of the two says. "But what trail rations we got, we're saving for the trip home." He gives you a broad smile. "We've got some nice pots and pans, though, and some quality leather gear. Take a look and see if anything catches your fancy."

Im afraid im a little short my dear, do you think you could let me slide on a few coins? I simply must have this blanket, it is truly an amazing piece of art.
In any case, Za presses on with talking of boss Waithe. But now he directs his questions to her husband. I Need to discuss some business with him concerning me and my friends here, but dont worry, we're not weavers, we've no intention of creating a rivalry. "Boss Wathe?" she replies to his question. "He's usually in his office over in the Town Hall. Or, if he's not there, you can try Miss Sussy's."
Faust asks what kind of trouble the townsfolk are worried about. "Well, yes, the dinos are a menace," Chale says, "but there aren't too many up here on the plateau. Yngvar wanders over to the weavers' stall, and does find a pretty shawl, woven of some soft, fine fibers, in pale greens and yellows.
Ragnarök keeps an eye open, but sees nothing that would cause alarm--just townsfolk going about their business. So far, nobody has entered or left the Town Hall.

We had a 'taur that kept a couple long sharpened poles on the wagon. He stood there with one in each hand staring down a charging tyrannosaurus. Me, I was hiding under the wagon, scared out of my wits. It was the first time I'd seen one. And you know, the stories just don't mean much until your facing down a mouth full of teeth charging at you at the speed of a galloping horse.
Anyway, there stood the 'taur, bellowing at the dino. From the dino's viewpoint he must have just looked like lunch. But at the last minute, he lunged forward to meet the charge and lifted both those spears up. That dino hit those spears and drove the butts into the ground.
I didn't know until then that something that big could fly! That tyranno just plain sommersaulted over the 'taur, AND the wagon! Came crasdhing down on the other side of us with those two spears sticking out of its chest.

Just here to have a look around; you should smile more, maybe give your guest a warm greeting don't you think? He says with a wink and a smile.
With that Za gets off his stool and heads over to the game tables. He paces slowly, carefully studying each patron, one by one, eyeing the games their playing as well. Mentally he notes each patrons descriptions and quality of their clothing, jewelry, and/or accessories. Listening in on as much as he can while still trying to gauge their reactions. Let me fill you in on a little secret... I'm here to put an end to your miserie so I'd like to know what we're up against and if this town is ready to take back what is rightfully yours... "
The Taur looks menacing enough and the weaver clearly sees he means it...
"Don't worry... you're safe with me..." he adds with a smile realizing he might have pushed this fine merchant a bit too far.

"During my pilgrimmage however I have developped a nose to come to places where people are oppressed... and now I sense great fear in you... If there's anything I may do to be of service I will listen. "

DM Kathy Thursday September 26th, 2013 11:55:58 PM Za'Reed looks around [OOC: sorry; I forgot to respond to this yesterday]. He sees a door behind the bar, probably leading to the kitchens and other "back room" areas. There is also a staircase, which runs along the wall next to the gaming tables. "Warm greeting?" the barkeep replies. "Not really my area." He nods over to the staircase. A pretty, friendly-looking young lady is coming down the staircase. She seems to have forgotten some of her clothing. She surveys the room with a broad smile.
Za moves among the gaming tables. Most people seem to be townsfolk; a few seem to be out-of-town merchants. The stakes aren't especially high, and nobody's raking in big winnings or anything like that.
Asteron tries to reassure the weavers, but they continue to eye him uneasily. "Please let us know if anything strikes your fancy, sir," Madda says.
Ragnarök asks why people keep saying they don't want trouble. "Well, because we don't want no trouble," the barkeep replies. "A lot of folks had plenty of trouble before they come here; that's why they come here. Folks here mind their own business." He hesitates, then adds, "'Course, tending bar, I hear a lot more about folks' business than they maybe realize."
Toregan asks the peddlers about the trouble at the Trading Post. They respond by repeating the same rumors you've heard from other merchants. The Gate was destroyed, there was a plague, there are trouble with local tribes, etc.

Since Za recognizes the game being played in front of him he takes a moment to mentally play the mans hand he can see. One of three. Za's man is wearing a worn out black wide rimmed hat with a single band around the center holding a white feather on his left side. A simple tan shirt and brown trousers are pressed and clean. Sitting to his left is a merchant looking man in a white button up vest over a black outfit. He grips a short black cane under the table. The third man looks to be a farmer, or an out-side laborer. Wearing a green shirt with the sleeves ripped off and the collar ripped to his upper chest, long unkempt black hair with dark tanned skin.
two Knights and a Priest. Raise and draw yeh simpleton. Which the man actually does! He draws another priest, which puts him at 2 pair. With only one more card to draw. He's got some pretty good chances. The "farmer" draws and tosses in three chips, taking a chug of his mug and smirks a bit, he speaks loud enough for Za to hear. Ye'both is payin' me dinnah ternight yeh know it!
Psshh; Raise again, but not too much or they'll fold. Za's guy tosses in 5 chips, nodding to the "farmer" I believe I'll be eating good tonight myself. And since your so kind to help buy all the ingredients, I've no problem frying you up a cut as well Jon. As 'Jon' tosses in the remaining 2 chips he's down he cocks his head sideways giving Za's guy a sarcastic look.
Hehe-HAHA! Yeh, looks like you do know how to play after all, hehe........ NICE! Another knight! What luck. Za continues to keep his commentary to himself as he watches the game unfold. Finally the "Merchant" lays his cards on the table and reaches in to draw a card. As he does so Za notices something under the table; He pulls two fingers out of his grip on his cane, and waves them around as he draws the card. Figures, one in every crowd... He's luck i'm not playing... Grinning, displaying quite a few missing teeth, he lays the card ontop of the others and tosses in 8 chips. Upping the ante for the final bet by 3.
The three men lay down their cards, 'Jon' gives a loud sigh, drains his mug and shakes his head. The 'Merchant' man is grinning with his missing teeth. Za's guy growls with anger, slamming his hands onto the table. He drains his mug as well and shoves himself away from the table, I've lost it all! Naertta is going to kill me! He sets back down, at an empty table, takes his hat off and sets it upside down, bending the white feather. The man seems not to notice, his face buried in his hands as he sobs quietly. The merchant gathers up his chips as Za makes his way over to the table, he leans in close so only he can hear and speaks in a low growl; Pride, Honor, Respect. Do you even know the meaning of these things? I bet I know how you lost those teeth you big ugly, You disgust me...
The drow makes his way over to the sobbing man and slips his last three gold and three silver pieces into the mans hat, out of pity or fairness he isn't sure, but he makes sure the man doesn't notice. He doesn't want to explain what he saw. As the pretty lady gets to the bottom of the stair case Za'Reed walks up to greet her.
Hello Ma'dam. Since I wandered in the doors I've been wondering what might have urged me to stay. Now I see it must have been you heavenly aura. Za nods his head and gives her a wink and warm smile, Miss Sussy I presume? Dar'Fien Reed, at your service. He reaches atop his forehead and tips an imaginary hat. [/b]

DM Kathy Sunday September 29th, 2013 8:13:30 PM Za'Reed watches one of the games for a while. It isn't quite as exciting as he imagines; Farmer Guy doesn't so much break down sobbing as look quietly miserable, and the merchant/cardsharp only gives him a sneering look. At any rate, Za is able to slip money to the man with nobody the wiser.
He wanders over to the friendly young lady on the stairs, and addresses her as Miss Sussy. She laughs. "Aren't you a one!" she says with a coy smile. "I'm not Miss Sussy, silly! They call me Candy, because I'm very sweet." She winks.
Yngvar orders the local special, and is soon served a mug of indifferent ale and a plate of very unappetizing stew.
Toregan asks the peddlers about Boss Wathe. They exchange glances, and shrug. "Well, being from out of town ourselves, it's hard to say," says the shorter man, who seems to be the friendlier of the two. He hesitates, then continues, "You do hear, though, that a lot of the people who came to this town were--well, maybe not exactly criminals, but not on the good side of the law, you know? That being the case, it's likely that Mr. Wathe's methods are....well, somewhat harsher than a typical mayor. Though I don't know for sure."
Ragnarök slips a coin to the barkeep, who sweeps it off the bar in a practiced motion. "Name's Frec," he says. "Well, the latest is that Boss Wathe is mad as a hornet at these adventurers from the Trading Post." He eyes you for a moment. "That'd be you and your friends, I'd wager." He looks thoughtful. "You know, when Boss Wathe first started taking over, a lot of folk here were happy to see him do it. I mean, somebody's gotta be Boss, right? And Boss Wathe was strong, and talked big about everybody making money, and...well, people backed him. Now, a lot of those people ain't so sure they made a good decision. But they're scared, see? Boss Wathe don't like to be crossed."

Rag's surprised the bartender identified him as being on of the Posts adventurers...
"A keen eye... I guess there's no use to deny who I am now is there... " Rag answers. He bends a bit towards the bartender and continues whispering.
"Well met Master Frec. It's good to know that we've gotten Boss Wathe's attention... He's been doing all he can to destroy the Post or at least to make merchants avoid the place at all cost. It has to stop and we're here to take care of that... I'm just wondering Master Frec what you will do with what I just told you. What will the people of this interesting town do once we pay the Boss a visit... "
Rag keeps eyeballing the merchant worrying that suddenly a bunch of goons will be on top of him.
DM Kathy Monday September 30th, 2013 10:08:20 PM Za'Reed continues speaking with Candy. "I haven't seen Boss Wathe this afternoon," she says. "I don't think he's upstairs. I think he's probably over at Town Hall. But," she smiles, "but I'm a lot more fun than he is, sugar."
Yngvar finishes his meal. Whatever brings the locals in here, it isn't the food.
Asteron walks over to the livery stable. He sees several horses and mules in stalls. He hears kind of a ruckus, and before long, two Halfling boys come into sight, running full-tilt. The first one stops abruptly and gapes at Asteron. The second catches up to him and gives him a playful shove. "Tag! You're It!" he says, the notices what his brother is looking at. "Uh," he says. "Um....stable your horse, sir?"
Ragnarök continues talking with the barkeep. "What I'll do?" he replies. "I'll do nothing. Look, mister, I'm just hired help. I serve up bad liquor and worse food to folks who'll pay, and I keep an eye on the games and the girls when Miss Sussy ain't downstairs. What other people'll do?" He shrugs, then looks directly at you. "That's hard to say." It's pretty obvious he's angling for another payment.
