Welcome to Town

ooc: There was a slight miscommunication between DM Ezra and myself. Completely my fault. Please see description below.

As the guards poke and prod at your belongings, you get the feeling that they appear to be more interested in you than in your belongings. You surmise that it is a rare event indeed to have surface travelers visit the city, and even rarer to have them come outside of the trading season.

Two of the guards are captivated by Emrys' presentation, giving their rapt attention to the bard. They seem most impressed by his showmanship. The other guards at the gatehouse poke and prod the members of the Vanguard, but otherwise seem satisfied.

They wave you forward, to where the gatehouse opens into a courtyard, lying between the gatehouse and the main gates. (This is the part where things are different.) The wall is perhaps 50 feet high. The wall lacks any obvious signs of construction or craftsmanship, composed of solid and sheer rock. You guess that it is likely the product of a great amount of time and earth magic.

Along the top of the wall is a crenelated parapet wall. Each of the merlons bears a metal spike. You can see helmets and flashing eyes in several of the crenelles. Rising above the walls are at least two dozen massive columns, connecting from the vaulted ceiling to the base of the chamber. The columns are built up with streets, walls, and hundreds of elaborate structures. A few glimmer with faint illumination, and here and there, lanterns shed green illumination in small pools separated by gulfs of shadow. The entire city is bathed in twilight by the luminescent fungus covering the cavern walls.

Directly in front of you is a massive iron gate, easily 30 feet high and bound with strips of adamantine in a crosshatch pattern. From here, it appears that the guards are all duergar, as Durovar described. The courtyard appears to be a second step in the processing of visitors to the city. A line of travelers snakes its way through the courtyard, with dozens of figures awaiting entry to the city. Several more heavily-armored guards stand in front of the main gate, while a pair of duergar wearing robes wave stone batons toward travelers one at a time. A nod from one of the robed figures allows them passage through a small entrance gate built into the larger main gate.

The travelers are a diverse and motley assortment of Underwold races. There are perhaps three dozen in total, primarily duergar but also including drow, svirfneblin, orcs, a small group of goblins surrounding an ogre wearing a cargo harness, a handful of lizardfolk mercenaries, and even a pair of derro whose eyes dart about the courtyard with exaggerated paranoia. The figure closest to you at the end of the line is a duergar - a merchant, by the look of his heavily embroidered robes - flanked by two duergar in plate armor. He turns his head to see who has queued behind him and raises an eyebrow.

"Ghor nuvpu'! SoH qem nuq Bthanchend?"

Undercommon - Highlight to display spoiler: {"Surface people! What brings you to Bthanchend?"}

Tuck moves into line behind the Duergar merchant and looks to Emrys, understanding only the Duergar's mentioning of the city.

He leans towards Grell and whispers, "This is making me nervous. I've always heard that these races are inherently evil. It's difficult to stay calm in the middle of all this."

Tuck keeps an eye out for any suspicious characters paying their group too much attention. (Perception 24)

Though she doesn't understand the languages here, she's sure they will find some common interest - likely gold. She eyes the adamantine strips on the gate wondering how easily she might be able to pry them away given the time. That thought is enough to keep her happy for now.

"True, Ariach," Wilma said, nodding in agreement. "Just because past reports about one race or another say that they may be evil, doesn't mean they truly are...after all, the Wold has, for too long, believed that Gargul was a god of evil, when all he really does is just make sure that every mortal in the Wold is properly sorted to their true destinations in the Lands of Rest. He...he just has this thing about undead. Undead just do NOT respect his authority..."

"I believe my friend that this is the time at which you should take the lead of the group. I would express that all weapons should be left sheathed but handy. Make no quick moves and keep your eyes open."

Teranslate as you see the need Emrys, we have complete trust in you."

As they make their way past the gatehouse and into the courtyard, he ponders if he knows any famous locals or organizations that he might be able to reference. (Knowledge [Local]: 11, nat. 1. Not a clue!) He sighs when nothing presents itself.

Emrys listens to Vaniime's request. In a low soft tone, he answers in elvish. "Vaniime, remember the dog, Gnowsy? A creature I gifted with understanding. Once we get inside, you will be speaking like a native. Twiddling fingers and chanting at this moment in time would be quite provocative, wouldn't you say." To Wilma, he asks in a similarly low voice (but in common), "Has your 'protection' faded by now on the others? The fewer the auras the better."

When they approach the end of the line and greeted by the duergar merchant, he answers in kind with a warm smile and a slight bow of his head. (In Undercommon)" Hello, my name is Emrys Myrridanmyl, a privilege it is to meet you, sir. Yes, we thought it was about time for a visit. You know, like everyone else, for pleasure and profit, profit and pleasure. Two words indistinguishable by some, wouldn't you agree?"

Emrys' charm brings a smile to the merchant's face. (Undercommon) "You are correct, sirrah. As they say, money cannot buy happiness... because money is happiness." He chuckles heartily, the kind of laugh that comes from a joke that has been told many times. "Please excuse my curiosity, but your answer was intriguingly vague. I am a native of Bthanchend, and do not recognize you. Surface folk are few and far between, so your coming will likely pique the interest of many people in the city. You lack any obvious goods, may I ask what is your line of business? If you are looking to trade or sell services, I have many contacts in the city." He suddenly looks surprised. "But forgive my manners! I am Sivan, a bonded member of the Jeweler's Guild. We are always looking to foster trade, and new people, especially surface folk, can occasionally be in need of guidance."

Alleah - Highlight to display spoiler: {Scanning the crowd of petitioners waiting to enter the city, your gaze falls on the pair of derro. They are filthy, covered from head to toe in dust and grime. Emrys translates everything that Sivan has said and introduces each of his friends. "You have very keen perceptions, sir. A quality I highly respect. So I will no longer insult your intelligence by continuing my feeble attempt at obscurity. We are a fellowship of friends from Plateau City. We call ourselves the Vanguard. You are correct that we are not tradesmen, however we represent a very affluent patron. I believe we both can mutually and exceedingly benefit from each other. We'd be more than happy to discuss this in a more private setting." Emrys glances at the robed figures with the glowing batons. "However, our most obvious concern at the moment is entering the city. We fear they may turn away surface dwellers."

Wilma remembers to make sure that whatever items she carries are put forth for the mandatory declarations, but she turns an interested eye towards the behavior of the Vanguard's newest member.

What was Alleah doing?

"Oh, Emrys..." the redheaded cleric says absentmindedly to the witchy bard, "Can we have a quick rundown on the, uh, 'most important' laws we'll need to remember..? You know--particular rules (if any) about casting spells in public...the need (or not) to address people in particular stations in a particular way...that kind of thing? I'd hate to have to be summarily executed for bending over to sniff some flowers or some other such..."

DM Tanner

Sivan gives a simple but respectful nod. (Undercommon) "I would be happy. We can meet at the Broken Pick. It is a tavern just off of the main bazaar. If I cannot answer your questions, then Indicio will." He looks toward the gate guards and then back. "Don't worry about the inspection. As long as you have no illusion magic or anything that could flatten a building, the guards will allow you to pass." He pauses to allow Wilma's question to be translated. "Bthanchend is a city of mercantilism. While we have many laws in common with other cities, anything that would disrupt trade is strongly discouraged. You should expect indentured servitude or worse for theft or fraud."

His words as suddenly cut off as a mewling, whimpering, pathetic whine is heard. The pair of derro from further up the line have detached themselves and are currently groveling in front of your group. They appear to be directing their appeals to Alleah. They speak in broken Undercommon, their frantic pleas containing words like "so hungry" and "please more." They are filthy, covered from head to toe in dust and grime. They are clothed in a mishmash of ill-fitting clothing and rags tied around their thin bodies. They are barefoot, and carry only a small sack at their belts. In Plateau City, they would qualify as 'paupers.'

Sivan raises an eyebrow and raises his arm as though to ward off their smell. (Undercommon) "Disgusting creatures! Do you know these wretches?"

Ariach is very impressed by Wilma´s logical thinking.
"I don´t know why it didn´t come into my mind to ask about laws and rules in the city. The codex dictates to follow all laws as long as they cope with Domi´s moralities."

To answer Wilma, Emrys says, "I have a broadsheet of their laws right here. Try not to step on any flowers or anything else in the meantime. I will examine it shortly."

He then reacts with disgust at first, as Sivan, when the derro prostrate themselves before the group. However his disgust is in reaction to their odor and state of uncleanliness. In undercommon, he answers Sivan, "We do not know the derro. There are several among us that are known for their charity to the poor and downtrodden ..." Then Emrys sees Ariach give the derro an amount of money equivalent to a skilled artisan's weekly wage. He then replies, "... and some of us are more charitable than others!"

Continuing his conversation with Sivan, he says, "Excellent, we will be happy to meet with you at the Broken Pick. I do have a question though, what is the reason for the cities policy on illusion magik? I must confess that my hat, a gift from my father, has a faint air of illusion. To be honest, I admit to being a vain man, a little more than most. I like to maintain a very prim and proper appearance, like every man should. Of course, one like yourself already understands this. Whenever the need arises, I use the hat's power to hide embarrassing flaws and restore my dignity. I'm not using it now, but what would you suggest I do with this?" Emrys takes the hat from his head and presents it to Sivan.

After his conversation with Sivan takes a pause, he will unravel the broadsheet and take a quick look of the laws, concentrating mostly on the use of magic and other possible offensive acts ... like smelling the wrong flowers.

The derro become absolutely elated at the gold handed to them. Their grins spread from ear to ear and eyes are as wide as teacup saucers. They turn to each other and gibber in their nonsensical language, holding their money up for the other to see. One casts a sidelong glance at Sivan and his bodyguards and whispers to the other. They both quickly silence their joy and stow the money in their pouches. Like actors putting on masks, in a heartbeat they resume their pitiful, wailing begging. They crawl on their hands and knees toward the duergar merchant, raising their hands in supplication.

The merchant and his bodyguards remain still and unmoving, until the very moment that one of the derro touches the hem of his clothing. In a blur, both bodyguards kick the derro with brutal iron-shod boots. One derro catches the kick in the ribs, sending him rolling like a doll several yards before lying still in a sprawl. The other is not so lucky, and the blow lands in the center of his face. With a wet crunch, he is flipped backward and lies on his back unconscious. His nose is obviously shattered and his lower jaw is dislocated.

The guards at the gate stop their inspection a moment. They look at the derro, look at the duergar, and back to the derro. Without a word, they wave the next traveler in line to continue.

Sivan removes a handkerchief from his side pocket and brushes at the spot on his robes where the derro touched. [Undercommon] "Filthy things." He turns and regards the party with a critical eye. "I suggest you become acquainted with local custom."

He sighs, pauses a moment, then a smile returns to his face. "But you are new travelers, and such is expected. Your magical hat is not likely an issue. I have heard of similar trinkets to change your appearance. As long as you are not something unpleasant trying to appear pleasant, then you will not be bothered." He laughs. "Just last month a troglodyte shaman tried to enter the city in the guise of a svirfneblin! His crude spells were no match for our guards. They starved him in a gibbet as punishment."

========

Emrys examines the broadsheet. While most of the laws follow the universal golden rule, there are a few exceptions:

- Crimes against property are equal in punishment to crimes against persons.
- "Blood gold" may be paid to any wronged party in lieu of punishment for any crime.
- Slavery is legal, but outright abuse is frowned upon (why damage your own property?).
- Certain monstrous races are forbidden such as troglodytes, kuo-toa, and illithid (anything that would eat another humanoid).

Tuck takes a deep breath and steels himself. He places a hand on Ariach's shoulder, knowing the big man would feel the same. "Not now, Ariach. This is not the time or place. But trust that there will be justice."

"Emrys--can you find out who...or what, if applicable...these two are? I mean--are they beggars, or are they slaves...or what...?" the cleric asks her friend. Stories of their sadistic practices are legendary! I can stabilize them, but to be safe I think we should keep them unconscious for now. No way of knowing if they'll become violent." Emrys lays his hands on each and mutters a few words of power. Shortly after, he looks to his fellow Vanguardians and says, "Friends, I am as appalled by this as you are. Sivan shrugs. [Undercommon] "Then when I am in Plateau City, I will be certain not to show such 'brutality.' But let me assure you, what you just saw was not heavy-handed by any means. Look around you. Does anyone care?" A cursory glance at the other waiting travelers reveals that everyone's attention has shifted back to keeping their pace in line. "Only those lizardfolk are still watching, and they are likely considering whether or not to enslave those wretches!" He sighs, rubs his beard, and leans in closer. "I have heard tell of the surface world. Full of heroes and such. Here those sensibilities will be exploited. Ruthlessly. Your every action will mark you as a target." He touches two fingers to his forehead and bows slightly. "But a thousand apologies to my newly-met associates if treating trash like trash is offensive. Please, let us not let this ruin our day. Come with me and drink! I'm sure there is much to discuss." He motions you along as you approach the main gate.

Upon tending to them, Wilma and Emrys see that the derro have stabilized, but remain unconscious. The derro who caught the kick in the ribs will likely be sore for several weeks. The other one will likely be scarred for life without more powerful - and expensive - healing magic.

Wilma; AC17 (+1 Mithril chain shirt); HP 51/51  d8+1=9 ; d8+1=7 ;
Tuesday October 15th, 2013 10:14:57 PM

Wilma bit her lip--the derro had, indeed, been guilty of bad acting and overstepping the bounds that they should have known existed in their world...but social acceptance of a bully did not change the fact that those who had kicked so viciously were bullies. Her mind flitted to the tales her mother and father had told her about how Parnoth, an evil green dragon, had been a despot and a bully to everyone within the Emerald Kingdom--especially those of Elven blood:

"There was a time when--to keep that Big Green Meanie from being even more miserable to the Elves living near the original Tower of Saryd--I was forced to claim an entire village of Elves and Elven-blooded as slaves that I owned!"

"Slaves???" Wilma had squeaked in disbelief.

"Yes, little one," the blade singer nodded. "I provided over a thousand Elves with bracelets bearing the seal of the Emerald Talons--for we were not yet a Dragon group at the time--so that Parnoth could not claim those Elves as his property by default." K'Nara's smile turned into one that didn't look very nice, and yet the little five-year-old future cleric of Gargul could tell that she was remembering the reaction of old Parnoth to that bit of news.

"He didn't like it very much, did he, Mama?" Wilma asked, hugging her beloved doll Thumpi very tight.

"No, Wilma, he didn't like it at all," the older redhead agreed smugly, "Because the so-called slaves that I supposedly 'owned' were kept safe from being mistreated by the Big Green Meanie..! So being a 'slave owner' for a short time was very much worth it in the end..."

Wilma stiffened as the memory washed over her.

She had an idea.

She fished for and retrieved her wand--the one that had the curing magic stored in it. She tapped the derro who had been smashed in the face first, using a charge on him(?) before turning to the derro's partner and tapping him(?), too, healing up the sore ribs.

"Emrys--translate this to them word for word, if you will..?" she addressed the bard, then fixed a stern eye on the two sorry little derro, speaking in a harsh tone:

"How DARE you two interrupt our entry into the city??? How DARE you force me to use expensive healing magicks on you??? Have you the gold to pay me for my time and trouble??? If not--then I believe I have just acquired two slaves to my service, by the very laws of Bthanchend! Is this not so???"

Emrys then redirects his attention to the two fallen derro. He translates Wilma's decree to the lowly derro with all the authority and harshness he can muster. He also adds, "You two weren't happy with just our gold, huh!? So for now on, your days will be spent as payment for saving your lives!"

Emrys just hopes he doesn't wake up some morning in time to witness one of these crazy, bulgy-eyed buggers shoving a dagger in his eye or jumping rope with his entrails.

Tuck is a little confused by Wilma's actions, but plays along. He keeps an eye on Sivan and the guards for any further shennanigans.

The pair of derro awake in a stupor, still reeling from the blows of the bodyguards' boots. They listen intently to Emrys as he translates, until their mouths drop in silent horror at their predicament.

Sivan and his bodyguards roar in laughter. The others waiting in line to enter the city stop and turn, little expecting hearty guffaws after such an incident. The merchant is doubled over, and wipes from his eyes. [Undercommon] "HA ha ha ha. Oh my goodness! Oh! Oh, I can't stop laughing. HAAAAA." He points a finger at Wilma. "You may as well have taken a pair of rabid dire rats for slaves! You will be lucky if they don't skin your face and wear it like a mask as they burn down your house! They are DERRO."

The pathetic pair are still lying down, propped up on their elbows. They look wearily at the party, waiting to see what happens. Sivan stops laughing sighs deeply. "Whew! I haven't laughed that hard in months. Dear woman, while the thought absolutely tickles me, I must point out one thing. The little bastards did not consent to your exchange. They were the recipients of an involuntary gift. They owe you nothing."

Again using Emrys as a translator, Wilma's face is set in an implacable expression.

"The merchant says that I can't possibly be your owner now," Wilma says evenly, "Because you didn't want me to heal you up. You couldn't wish to have regular meals. You were in no position to agree to have a fresh set of clothes. Is that true, then? That you are not my slaves?" She looks from one of the derro to the other to see what they decide.

Alleah holds her ground, watching the proceedings. She takes notice of the garb and dress of the merchant, and looks for any distinguishing features or emblems that may adorn his clothes. She also looks for visible weapons on the guards.

Tuck sees no point in trying to tempt these derro into accepting slavery, whether a ruse or not. The danger to them seems to be gone. Let them go on their way.

But he holds his tongue, crosses his arms, and looks out into the crowd.

Wilma is given an out by Sivan by not only telling her that derro are not prized as slaves and the fact she has no legal claim to them. When Wilma persists on aligning herself with these two evil, degenerate, psychopaths, Emrys is dumbfounded with disbelief.

"Wilma!? What are you doing? Let them go! I was willing to help you when I assumed we would simply release them once inside the gate. This plan to feed, clean and clothe these derros is just plain folly! The hallmarks of the derro is a proclivity for stark raving madness and fiendish cruelty. These are not innocent children ... they eat innocent children!! If only half the stories I've read about them are true, they would still be far beyond any redemption! If you wish to continue this venture, I can not in good conscience help you. For when they turn on us, and they will, I don't want to be responsible for any of us being wounded or killed by these two. Like Vaniine said, they're all yours."

Emrys then begins to hum a magical tune that seems to resonate deeply into Wilma's mind. He touches her arm and suddenly all the chatter around her begins to sound like words she understands. She realizes the words are so easy to pronounce as well. Wilma now has the ability to speak and understand undercommon. "You may talk to them yourself, I want no part of it."

"Actually, Emrys," she answered softly, "That is precisely what I plan to do--I only wished to extend the nominal protection from the others until they left the area...but we can't even extend that small bit of protection unless the derro accept it. However, now that the plan has been told out loud to everyone here..." The redheaded cleric draws herself up to her full five feet, eight inches of height and gives the recovered derro a sharp nod.

"Cleverly done, sirs!" she tells them in their language. "You may return to your home haunts and boast to your clan that you two were able to get cash and healing from silly surface folks, for I will not claim you! I'm sure your status within your group will be elevated due to your cleverness. Good day!" Wilma turns on her heel.

"We may go into the city now, then, yes...?" she asks the guards that have, by now, finished with the Vanguard. If they confirm it, then Wilma will no longer hold up the group and enter Bthanchend with her colleagues and without the derro.

The derro look at each other - slightly dizzily due to their recent injuries - and see a golden opportunity going to waste. They fall on their stomachs at Wilma's feet, mewling and groveling. Their ferret-like faces and grubby hands clinging lightly to the hem of her robes. Their words are finally more than garble, and in a rushing stream of words they express their feelings. They take turns speaking at a feverish pace.

[Undercommon]

"Great High Priestess!"
"Mighty High Priestess!"
"You must save us!"
"You must!"
"You cannot leave us!"
"You cannot!"
"We will surely die without your generous protection!"
"We surely will!"
"Please claim us!"
"Please!"
"We will gladly be your servants!"
"We will gladly!"
"We will do whatever you ask!"
"Whatever you ask!"
"Please do not forsake us!"
"Yes, please!"

Sivan and his bodyguards - whom Alleah notes carry longswords, heavy steel shields, and greataxes on their backs - break into a new round of laughter.

Wilma went down on one knee.

"Sorry, fellas," she said to them apologetically, "I can't help you out like that. However..." She rummaged through her pouch and came up with a fistful of copper coins. "...much as I wish I was this 'mighty high priestess' you're flattering me with, I don't get that kind of paycheck. Take this, as it's all that I have to give you..." She gives them the money. "Oh, and one last piece of advice: you need to work on your humility approach there--you did just fine with that merchant until you touched his clothes--he really didn't like that, which was why you got smacked around. Keep your hands to yourselves and I bet it'll be less dangerous for you in the future." Wilma stood up, and--once more--looks to the rest of her very patient group of fellow adventurers.

"So...are we going into Bthanchend proper, or not...?" she asked.

OOC: Wilma--who has already heeded the advice of Emrys and is for the second time complying with it--gives up 7cp to the derro and is going along with the rest of the Vanguard into the city now.

The derro's faces turn sour, and they grab the coins from Wilma's hand before slinking off out of the gate back into Bthanchend Grotto. One of them pauses before rounding a corner and flashes his teeth at your group in a snarl before joining his friend.

Sivan and his bodyguards stop laughing just in time for you to be assessed by the Bthanchend Guard. The two robed duergar wave their stone batons at you (no studious sage is necessary to know that they are using a type of detect magic), and after a few moments of concentration you are waved through.

You pass through the main gate, and into Bthanchend proper. Numerous massive columns rise to meet the ceiling from within the city wall, with hundreds of streets, walls, and elaborate structures carved into the columns. Buildings built of brick and fungal lumber blanket the ground around the columns, apparent to the naked eye to be of lower quality and lesser means than the elaborate column structures. The buildings are thick and squat, with severe angles and imposing rows of spikes lining the tops of walls and the edges of roofs. The fires of a hundred forges drift lazily into the upper reaches of the grotto, while the noise and bustle of a small city echo hollowly in the dark. The entire city is shadowed and gloomy, with pods of phosphorescent fungus and mushrooms providing illumination. Faintly glowing moss covers large patches of most structures, while cultured pods of mushrooms hang at street corners glow in a larger radius.

Sivan takes in the city with a wave of his arm. [Undercommon] "Bthanchend is a city of contrast, where surface dwellers may travel without fear of theft or violence along its well-lit avenues and busy bazaars, yet face drawn daggers and rending magicks in the shadowy alleys. Peace is tenuous, and the duergar have managed to make this section of the Heartwold as safe as can be managed. The city is primarily inhabited by duergar, with smaller minorities of svirfneblin, surface dwarves, drow, myconids, and orcs. Numerous members of other, more savage races such as goblins, derro, kuo-toa, and kobolds exist in smaller numbers, skulking in ruined warrens. All races are permitted in Bthanchend, conditional on their following the laws of the city. The only race not welcome under any circumstance is the illithid, who have a long history of enslaving duergar."

He looks at you a bit sheepishly and gives a shrug. "I used to work as a tout." He points ahead and to the right, where a two-story building stands above the others on the broad avenue. "The Broken Pick. Do you have any needs before we sit down and discuss business?"

Emrys is surprised at Wilma's restraint. He was halfway expecting her to start kicking the derro herself if they hadn't taken her advice.

He was rather nervous when the robed duergar waved their glowing batons around him. However he does his best to look nonchalant, but never sparing a pleasantry. "Hello. My, that stone is beautiful. Thank you, sir."

Once entering the city, and after listening to Sivan's story of contrasts, Emrys urges his friends to take positions in a well-lit spot after translating. "It is a great aspect of your character to have risen up from such humble beginnings. A quality we all strive to achieve. Could you allows us a moment to confer with my friends. With all that's been discussed, I'm afraid some of our discussion was lost in translation."

Emrys then turns around and performs the same magical chant on Vaniime. "I imagined you've been wanting to join the conversation." Looking to the others, he asks, "Does anyone else wish to speak?"

(Casting Share Language on Vaniime. She can speak, read, write and understand Undercommon for 24 hours.)

"I was sorta hoping we could sucker 'em along for some possible information," she told the bard, "But it wasn't to be. We'll just have to think of something else, is all." She hooked an arm through one of Ariach's.

"I'll be happy to translate for you, Ariach," the redhead offered, her smile softening a bit...or, at least, it seemed that way to the near-paladin's eye...
