On The Hunt

A Walk through the Woods - DM Donna
Friday October 4th, 2013 11:22:47 AM

The Bonetown crew gather up their last-minute supplies and set out from Fort Stag, with young Linos guiding them to the forest west of the city.

If the trees that made up the majority of the city's buildings had been impressive, then those that make up the forest off the beaten path are even more so: bigger, wider and no doubt even taller. Clearly the group is trekking through a lumber baron's wildest dreams!

One thing becomes clear as the party is guided along: the deeper into this forest primeval they go, the more brusque and business-like Linos gets. It's very clear that he takes his role as protector of the forest very seriously, because he is almost draconian when it comes to making sure that nobody in the group sets a toe off the trail they are following.

Following the trail is NOT easy for the humanoids of the group, even with the guide. Zeoll, having had some prior experience before, finds that he is being extra-mindful of where he puts his paws. But the trip is taxing Coer's agility and his patience, both, for the twisting, less-than-Minotaur-wide path is very much a challenge for his hooves.

It doesn't help that Linos has a tendency to travel the trail at a faster pace. Clearly the centaur's familiarity with the terrain has bred a bit of condescending contempt for those who cannot walk it with the same speed and confidence as he. The old "Minotaur versus Centaur" attitude seems to come a bit more to the fore when the equinoid shows very thinly-veiled impatience with Coer's perceived lack of finesse.

"No, don't--" Linos snaps just as the party is negotiating a bend in the path, cutting himself off as one of Coer's oversize feet audibly crunches on a small but rather crackly flower. For a moment, there is silence and then the centaur shakes his head with an audible sigh.

The journey continues, with Linos pulling ahead of the party, unmindful of their slower speed...

EVERYONE MUST MAKE SURVIVAL CHECKS (and people CAN aid each other with this):

1 - 10 You've lost sight of your centaur guide...and the trail is a bit too vague for you to follow.
11 - 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {You think you see a flicker of a dark brown tail in the trees ahead--the trail is barely perceptible.}
17 - 21 Highlight to display spoiler: {You're pretty sure that Linos isn't too far ahead, and you can just about tell where to put your feet thanks to the barely-there horseshoe impressions in the forest floor.}
22 and over Highlight to display spoiler: {You can see that Linos really isn't too far ahead of the party. Clearly his ranger skills are to be admired--but the young buck needs to learn that not everyone is as familiar with the forest as he is.}

Oh, silly me! New scene now means that you all get your XP for the previous scene, so:

All ye who participated in the previous scene (Where in the Wold is Cap-i-tan An-noir..?) get to add 1846xp to your PC.

I know there has already been a Hero Point awarded because of a brilliant plan, but if any of you can think of particular characters to nominate for Outstanding Contributions to the game, please email your lovely DM.

And the other DM, too. ;D

Kane' is not offended by Linos' seriousness, he can identify an expert when he sees one. "He is acting like a sea navigator that I knew as a young child. Kahuna knew everything about the sea and was very protective of the life of the ocean", muses the half-elf philosophically.

But Kane's ability under the huge trees isn't strong, and craning his neck in awe of the Whistal doesn't help. Linos the centaur is soon only a barest flicker ahead.

Even the faster members of the group - such as Spire - has difficulty keeping pace with Linos. The taur stops in his tracks following repeated demands and turns to face the party as he mutters something.
If you speak Tauric Highlight to display spoiler: {"Domi grant me strength" he says}

He waits for the party to catch up "If it means you will be careful where you step, then I shall ease the pace" he advises. He moves ahead at a much slower pace now.

Marching order please folks!

Not wanting to be last or first, Kane' wants to stick to Zeoll's side, but the narrowness of the trail makes that impossible. So the half-elf walks in front of Zeoll, grateful of the old wemic's bulk behind him and the massive Coer walking before.

Spire walks as close to the middle of the pack as possible, being the squishiest of the bunch. He has no intention of making the same mistakes as the last combat. He will also offer a blessing to anyone who wants it, casting Resistance on his allies. (Anyone who wants +1 to saves can take it, although this does not stack with a Cloak of Resistance.)

OOC: I love how all I have to do is mention a marching order and folks get edgy :) In this case though you're spot on

The party continue weaving their way through the path indicated by Linos. Zeoll notices that Linos leaves no trail at all in this environment. The party best not lose sight of him then - either to find their prey or to return to the Port.

Linos stops suddenly after a short while and raises his fist by his shoulder - the universal signal for "everybody stop and be quiet!". He turns and draws his handaxe as he does so. "Something doesn't..." but his words are cut short as the flora in the immediate area starts moving.

Before you can get a bearing on what is happening, there is a blinding light
Everyone to make Reflex Saves vs DC20. If you pass you take 6 pts damage. If you fail you are blinded and take 12pts damage

Anybody not blind...
Highlight to display spoiler: {You can see movement on all sides of the party. Whilst stationary they were indistinguishable from the rest of the jungle, but now you can clearly make out three beings. Thickly corded roots and tendrils of a densely grown tangle of plants, and leafing vines form a fur-like coat on these large humanoid plant forms. The jungle does not seem to bother them as the move quickly to attack the party.
The two plant forms ahead though are different. They appear more like big balls of fungus.
}

E2 rolls along the ground before stopping and releasing a ball of spores centered on Kane! (Coer, Kane and Zeoll to make Fort saves vs DC16 or be nauseated! If you fail the save you must then immediately make another Fort save vs DC16 or also take 2pts strength damage! Coer receives a +2 bonus to both saves for being partially in the area)

E4 strides up and tries to club Zeoll, missing the Linotaur by the narrowest of margins (Hit Flat foot AC17 - Miss!)

E5 has managed to get himself within striking range of Jozhur and clubs him across the head (Hit Flat foot AC15. Jozhur takes 6pts damage!)

"Well don't just stand there. Make mulch!" Linos yells as he moves and swings at the nearest plant with his axe. It slams into him as he approaches, but he ignores the pain to swing his axe deeply into it.

If you are not blind: Map - Round 1

Notes:
- This entire area is considered difficult terrain. It costs 2 squares of movement to move 1 square. You need the Nimble Moves feat to 5ft step in difficult terrain.
- Anyone more than 10ft away from you has partial concealment as a result of the vines, roots, and short bushes that cover much of the ground.
- The undergrowth also increases the DC of Acrobatics and Stealth checks by 2 because the leaves and branches get in the way.

Kane's senses are assaulted, but quick thinking and a strong immune system keeps his sight and strength. His stomach, however, rebels, and he vomits bile directly in front of him on the trail!

His stomach, griping and threatening more bile, causes the half-elf to see spots before his eyes, and he has no chance of concentrating on a spell.

He stumbles away from the poison spores, choking out words. "Spell... please... now..."

The Cauldron at his side responds with concern, casting a Shield of Faith around the BloodWitch, surrounding Kane' with a holy shield!

OOC: Sorry, Rob, my AC on my PC sheet assumes I have already cast Mage Armor, and in this fight, Zeoll has not yet done so. His flat-footed AC is currently 16, so I think that monster did hit. Zeoll's current non-armor-spelled AC is 18 after he is no longer flat-footed.

Also, Zeoll took 6 hp flash damage, got cured 5 hp from the channelled cure, and probably took a hit, so his current hp are 32 of 33 less the melee hit.

Also, if his spell-like ability provokes an AoO, can he try to use it on the defensive? Concentration check is 1d20 +4 wis +4 caster levels = 12 for a level 1 equivalent ability? I think not, so Zeoll fails to go invisible but still uses a use of his ability?

Spire is blinded by the flash, but knows that the party will require healing. He steps back and channels his healing, hoping to affect as many of the team as he can.

Kane happens to blink at just the right moment and avoids the bulk of the blinding light. He chokes on the poison spores and forces his way through them, begging his spirit companion to shield him from further danger.

Jozhur is not so lucky as his vision is now obscured by nothing but brightness. He holds his dagger before him and prepares to defend himself from what he expects will be another assault.

Zeoll took a heavy blow from the hit, and with his eye-sight intact he watches the toxic spores roll over him. They take their toll on the taur and he decides the best course of action would be to render himself invisible. (Zeoll took 6pts from the flash, 8pts from the hit, and was cured 5pts - so 9pts down. Also, the Fey Domain ability 'Hide Away' is a supernatural ability and doesn't provoke an AoO from the enemy)

Shem is another of the lucky ones quick enough to close their eyes just in the nick of time. He traipses through the undergrowth and lines up a nearby target. His shot is dead on, but the impact doesn't have the same satifying 'thunk' that it usually does (Rolled for partial concealment. D100=67. It's a hit)

Linos seems to be in his element. His blow is true and strikes extremely deeply into the fungus (Hit AC18 for 17pts)

The enemy react...

Enemy 1 slams again into Linos with force, hitting the taur squarely in the chest (Hit AC22 for 15pts)
Enemy 2 and 3 each move to attack Kane, but the witch proves too difficult to strike
Enemy 4 lays two solid blows into the invisible Zeoll - pinpointing the taur with accuracy (Hit AC20 and AC20 for 7 and 5 respectively. Zeoll takes 12pts damage!
Enemy 5 lays into the blinded Jozhur, but in trying to avoid the pointy object being waved about the enemy fails to hit anything at all! (Missed AC6 and AC13)

The poison spores have dispersed.

ooc: poison spores have dispersed. Assuming that means Kane' is no longer nauseated?

..............

Clearing the spores settles Kane's stomach, and the BloodWitch fearfully sees he stumbled away from one attacker and into two more! The passive spells of a witch are of little use against creatures not human, but the vegetation is tricky enough that any movement on Kane's part would bring swift retribution from the two large plant creatures, so attacking is out of the question too.

He tries to think of the vulnerabilities of plant creatures, but the former slave has no experience with anything like this! "What types of magic are these monsters vulnerable?, he calls, especially wanting to know if they are weak in Reflex, Fort, or WIll.

But the half-elf has no time. Instead, Kane' goes into a defensive spell casting, calling on his Akua to imbue him with a magical form to battle the plant creatures. In seconds, Kane's form is gone, replaced by a great cat, his muscles flexing visibly under its skin as it bares its fangs and shakes its thick mane of hair!

Neither player has posted for the past 5 days. Anyone know anything? It takes the fun out of killing someone when they're not around to watch it :) Anyone want to play their PCs for them?

Reminder from DM Donna: Coer's player has posted that their Real Life issues have called them away from the Wold for a while. Someone will have to RP Coer. I'm looking to see if Kiril's player has notified us of anything, but I don't see any communications from him so far...

Kane casts on the defensive transforming himself into a great cat-like creature. He feels confident that these new razor sharp claws will tear shreds off of the plant creatures, but hopes the party can give him some idea on the best plan of attack. (OOC: Now that you are size large I have taken the liberty of showing where I think the new squares you occupy are placed. Please advise if you are not happy with how I've placed you)

Shem switches to his bludgeoning arrows and fires once again at his prey. One arrow thunks into the plant beast whilst the other arrow sails wide (Hit AC23. Roll for concealment: 29. Pass. Miss AC16). Once again, though the arrow embeds in the creature, Shem feels less than satisfied with the relative damage done.

The invisible Zeoll tries to slink away from the foe nearest him. As the linotaur turns to move away, the plant beast lashes out at the empty space next to Zeoll's head. (Your move action - despite you being invisible - provoked an AoO. Hit AC15 so a Miss!)

Zeoll's mind quickly tries to assess these creature (You only gave me one Knowl check so I'll assume you're checking out the enemy types nearest you). They are unlike any plant you have seen before. If a mad scientist was able to cross-breed a gorilla with a twisted willow, this might be the result. Based on one being able to attack him whilst invisible AND recognise that it could detect him moving away from it, Zeoll deduces the humanoid plant creatures must have very acute senses or some method of detection that negates invisibility. Furthermore, it is highly probable they have Plant Traits. They must be amazingly stealthy to not have been detected by Linos in what must be his favored environment, and the fact that they seem to have co-ordinated their attack would indicate they may very well have intelligence above that of many animals. Furthermore, the difficult terrain and undergrowth does not seem to bother them.

Jozhur - still blind - continues to wave his knife about in a threatening manner

Spire - also still blind - prays to his deity for help and to help his allies

Linos once again shows how adept he is with pruning, as he once again hacks away at the fungus before him, although this time not as much falls away (Hit AC20 for 8pts)

The enemy act...

Enemy 1 again slams into Linos. The centaur tries to hold his ground, but he winces as if several ribs were broken by the impact.
Enemy 2 tightens itself up into a ball and rolls directly at Kane! (With Improved Overrun, Kane cannot avoid the attack nor does he get an AoO. CMB28 beats Kanes CMD of what I think is 24 (18 + 4Str - 2Dex + 4 for an extra two legs). Please correct me if I'm wrong). It passes directly past him stopping shortly before the main party group at which point it stops abruptly and releases spores! Shem, Kiril, Spire and Jozhur to make Fort saves vs DC16 or be nauseated! If you fail the save you must then immediately make another Fort save vs DC16 or also take 2pts strength damage!)
Enemy 3 tries to strike Kane the cat but misses (Hit AC9 and 17 - both Miss)
Enemy 4 moves up to the pack and tries to strike Shemeska in the back, but alas misses (Hit AC17 - Miss)
Enemy 5 edges closer and tries to hit the blind Spire. The creature though is somewhat distracted and misses wildly (Hit AC7 and AC6. Big Misses!)

Kane' the Lion is slightly amazed that he is unscathed so far in the battle. It seems that despite the plant's terribly debilitating attacks, they are less adept at actual damage. One ray of hope!

The Bloodwitch in beast form can't do anything other than attack, and, being now large as Coer, Kane' sees Plant E3 is within range...

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 HP12 of 33)  d20+7=13 ; d20+15=18 ;
Thursday October 10th, 2013 6:59:46 PM

Zeoll senses he is wasting his time with the invisibility. These plant things use senses other than sight anyway.

Zeoll figures he has to get away, get some curing, get his mage armor up.

He tries to figure out if these things have five foot or ten foot reach. Know Nature 13, Perception 18.

If they have five ft reach only, Zeoll backs up five feet to W-X-19-20. Then, out of reach of the enemy, he casts Mage Armor.

If they have ten ft reach, Zeoll readies his shield, so that he can use it for total cover against the next melee attack made against him. Then he moves 20 ft to Z-AA-21-22, putting his back to a tree. If he is attacked, by an AoO or a melee attack, the shield should stop that one and others from that side.

Kane the cat - I'm sorry - Kane the LION bites and claws at the enemy plant. The vines and tendrils that surround the creature are easy to hit but surprisingly hard to tear away (Hit AC19, 21, 19 for Dam 5, 4, 6 but only deals 1dmg!)

Spire opts for a different strategy. He extends his hands and unleashes a torrent of flames at one of the foes, frying it to an utter crisp. (Hit touch AC17 for 17damage. It is utter toast)

Zeoll has observed (and felt from personal experience) that each of these plant creatures has 10ft reach. He prepares his shield and moves away from the enemy next to him (Putting the party actions in your favor, Spire fries the enemy before E5 gets an AoO)

Coer moves closer to the neasest enemy (OOC: Can't 5ft step in difficult terrain unless you have Nimble Moves, Freedom of Movement, or equivalent). His attack can't seem to penetrate the natural armor of the fungus (Hit AC14 - Miss!)

Jozhur has absolutely had better days. Blinded and vomitting he tries to just get out of there. (OOC: Never heard of 'Acrobatics to avoid having speed halved by nauseated effect' BUT with Spire frying E5 you don't have to worry about AoOs and are able to freely move to T25)

Linos seems to have found his rhythm and hacks a large piece of fungus away (Hit AC19 for 12pts)

The poisonous spores disperse (ending the nausea) and the enemy react...

Enemy 1 tries to slam again into Linos, but misses the taur. Linos is still visibly injured, but doesn't look to be backing down. The fungus releases its now common defense mechanism: spores!
Enemy 2 slams a fungus-y extension into Coer, hitting him with a solid blow (Hit AC25. Coer takes 11pts dmg!)
Enemy 3 can't catch a break, and continues to miss Kane (Hit AC17 and 15 - both misses!)
Enemy 4 likewise misses Shem (Hit AC10 and 4 - both misses!)

Map - Round 4

Enemy 1 - AC17 - 37dmg
Enemy 2 - AC17 -
Enemy 3 - AC18 - 1dmg
Enemy 5 - AC18 - Fried to a crisp

Zeoll ponders throwing his tanglefoot bag now, but deems the chance of success too low. So he casts his true strike spell, and plans to throw next round. (as a verbal only spell, true strike has no chance of failure with the tower shield)

He decides he wants to throw alchemical fire rather than the tanglefoot goop. He sets the bag down and draws a flask of liquid fire.

He keeps alert, too. Perception 29. Are there any other enemies hidden? Are these things attacking with coordination? Is number one holding back because it is so wounded?

Monday October 14th, 2013 10:30:10 PM

Apologies for the lateness of this post. I will try to ensure that everyone gets time to post and that I get 5 in this week

Kane decides that no, they will not die like dogs - they will fight like lions! He grapples at the plant creature, but finds it difficult to find a firm grip on its leafy tendrils (Q: A pounce attack is made as part of a charge, meaning you have to move at least 2 squares towards your target. Aren't you too close to charge?) The leafy beast tries to kick Kane away, but alas without success (AoO missed)

Shem backs away from his opponent to get a better shot but finds he only has time to get away one shot. It hits his target squarely (Per my past 4 posts: "You need the Nimble Moves feat to 5ft step in difficult terrain." However since you are moving I will give you the benefit of moving farther than just 5ft and outside the 10ft reach of the critter. The enemy misses on its AoO

Coer decides that now is the time, and unleashes a flurry of blows against the fungus creature that dare attack him. His blows are fast and solid as he sinks his fists deep into the yellow mush.

Spire has an idea for a spell, but must have been so impressed with Coer's attacks that he just can't focus. The fungus finds just the right moment to attack as Spire momentarily drops his guard (Attack vs AC9: 28 = Nat 20. 9 = Fail to confirm crit. Spire takes 17dmg!). The party wizard drops to the ground, covered in a mess of yellow spores. Spire is dying!

Jozhur no longer feels nauseated, and even blind feels nothing can hold him back. He moves back into the fray

Zeoll stays alert and draws a flask of alchemical fire. He can't see any other enemies hidden in the bushes - though he didn't see these ones coming either. The enemies look to be attack in coordination, and the only thing that seems to be stopping the enemy ahead is the injured centaur Linos. Even from here Linos looks like he may succumb to the creature but he fights on like a veteran, doing what he can to buy the party just a little more time to come up with a strategy.

Linos yells in anger and brings the handaxe down on the plant ahead of him, cleaving it in two and spraying himself with pieces of the fungus in the process (Hit AC19 for 7dmg. Enemy 1 = dead). With his other hand he holds his side. There are no signs of blood, but you can be sure his ribs aren't meant to look like that.

The injured centaur moves south and stands shoulder to shoulder with Coer. A rare sight indeed - centaur and minotaur fighting side by side.

Zeoll then moves 20 ft south to 25-26-Y-Z. His goal for next round is to maneuver so that Kiril, Shem, Jozhur, and most of all Spire are within range of a curing channel, but so that the plants are not. He shouts to his friends, "I'll cure Spirre in a moment!"

Kane' immediately dismisses the spell keeping him in lion form and, ignoring the large plant creatures and their buffetting attacks, the half-elf ducks and tries to cover Spire's body with his own. Yet the difficult terrain only gets him half-there!

Shem draws his sword and moves to attack the plant beast ahead of him. His skills with the blade do not match his skills with a bow however, and as he draws near he feels a decent impact upon the side of his head (AoO from moving through a threatened space. Hit AC23 - Nat 20. Failed to confirm crit. Shem takes 8 damage!) He does manage to slice a few tendrils free however.

Zeoll throw the fire at his nearest target, but only manages to set a few vines alight this round. He then moves further away from the immediate battle.

Spire's constitution has taken many a battering of late, and looks to finally be toughening up. His body automatically stabilises his vital organs and his breathing becomes steay.

Jozhur - though blind - knows that Spire is in trouble. He throws himself down upon the wizard in an attempt to shield him from further injury.

Kane too moves closer to aid the fallen ally. The enemy fungus tries to smother Kane, but the witch ducks the blow (AoO vs AC16: 12 = Miss)

Coer unleashes another flurry of blows, but finds the movement of his target harder to predict this time, and only manages to land one solid blow.

Linos looks enraged by the battle, though fatigued and badly wounded. He fights on viciously slicing at the plant creature with what might he has remaining (Hit AC31 - Nat 20. AC19 confirms crit. Linos does 18damage with his first attack) The fungus drops to the ground, lifeless and inanimate. Linos' eyes are wide and he has his axe raised and ready to assault the next target.

The tide of the battle has clearly turned...

Enemy 3 makes a series of noises. If you speak Sylvan Highlight to display spoiler: {"Withdraw!"}. It then scampers away into the wilderness.

Enemy 4 follows suit (Shem gets to make an AoO) and heads for the nearest tree.

E3 takes more fire damage this round: 6 hp.

Zeoll hears the one speak in Sylvan, and the word it speaks is no surprise, but the fact that it speaks IS a surprise! He watches carefully as the retreating creatures move, to see how they interact with the ground, and how they they leave signs of their passage. Perception 17, Survival to track 27.

The old liontaur takes a move action to get closer to his friends, and then channels positive energy, calling on Queen Maab to heal his friends. Everybody heals 5 hp damage in this round. (and see below)

He is alert to see if his curing revives any of the fallen enemies.

==========

If we are out of combat ...

Zeoll asks Linos what those things are, and more importantly, what they want. The liontaur proposes to the group that he and Linos could likely track them back to their lair if there might be some value in that. Perhaps they are evil, and should be uprooted, so to speak? Perhaps they might have information, if one could be captured? Perhaps they have loot?

Zeoll smells one of the fallen foes, so as to better recognize these things in the future, and to be able to track by scent.

He picks up the tumblefoot bag he had set down.

He also releases more blasts of positive energy ... four more cure 3+2+3+2 ... Everyone heals a total +15hp with five channels altogether.

For a wonder, Kane' is unharmed, but as the half-elf still feels the soothing touch of Zeoll's healing he knows he is not needed immediately for Spire or the others of the Lionfish. The plants make noises as they withdraw, much more like animals than plants, but again, that is a worry for another time for Kane'.

The Bloodwitch immediately turns and rushes to heal Linos, the one who did the lion's share of the fighting, and looks extremely hurt. Not to mention that his skills and position as Stallion's liaison is critical in any eventual evidence against Captain Annoir, and the young centaur is probably the most important person of the group!

" Ho'olu komo la kaua ko'u Akua Lono a'ole hakaka no kea koa", he breathes in prayer, laying a hand on Linos' side to heal him of some of his wounds.

Following combat - DM RobC
Thursday October 17th, 2013 1:37:52 AM

With combat now seemingly over, the heroes take a moment to take stock and recover. Spire took the brunt of the enemy ambush, but recovers well thanks to healing from Zeoll. Linos too receives the blessing and Kane's healing touch, and Spire channels more healing to the group.

"Plant Imbued Apes - or at least some variety of them" Linos responds to Zeoll's question "Most are quite docile, though when their habitats are threatened they can become very protective. They don't have lairs as such but live in groups high in the trees. As for 'loot' as you call it, I doubt they would have anything you would consider valuable. Tracking them would be near impossible, and I would advise against trying to find any such lair. That was likely just a small hunting party. I don't think we are prepared for an assault on a group of them"

Jozhur and Spire remain blinded by the spores. Shem takes the opportunity to make light of the situation with some light ribbing at Jozhur's expense.

He frowns his disapproval at Shemseka's humor, but has to admit that the drow's levity makes him feel things are not as bad as they actually are.

The Bloodwitch studies the blindness to see if it is induced by poison or curse that he will be able to reverse the effects. "Linos, do you know of any herbal remedy for Spire and Jozhur's condition? If not, we may have to turn back until they are better."

"While it would undoubtedly be an indignity, I believe our best chance of getting out of here with everyone intact is for our disabled party members to be assisted." He gives a knowing look to Linos. "I'm certain that carrying a blind man out of certain danger would qualify as an acceptable circumstance to break your taboo against passengers on your back."

"It is not a taboo, merely an indignity - " Linos responds to Shem, not at all menacingly " - but one often overlooked following a battle. I will carry the human if two of you can manage the elf" He makes his way over to Jozhur and guides the rogue aboard.

"Once we make camp I will seek out the herbs necessary to brew a remedy for their lost vision. I recommend we push ahead and clear this area lest the apes return" he responds to Kane's concern for the party. Kane detects a lingering magical aura on both Jozhur and Spire, but to his knowledge the aura is different to that he often sees when he casts the blindness spell. This is likely something else.

Kiril looks quite banged up by the battle, and Kane' detects he caught a strong dose of poison of some kind. "I'll take him back to the port to be treated" Coer advises "It'll be easy enough for me to follow my own footsteps" (OOC: Kiril and Coer will be awaiting the party back at the Lionfish or will be able to return back in the game as soon as their players are back in action)

With Coer and Kiril departing to the south, what will be the party marching order to head north? I assume Linos will still take the lead? Spire will also need assistance or a guide.

Kane' is worried, seeing Coer and Kiril go back to town and guard the Lionfish as well as heal Kiril. It has to be done, but leaves the group even more vulnerable. He summons his warrior spirit, bucking up his courage.

"Linos, thank you for carrying Jozhur. Zeoll, can you handle Spire on your back, and Spire can hold on as long as we are only walking. Shemseka, you and I will have to take the front and back to best guard our wounded until the blindness can be removed."

It is phrased as a request, but as the oldest crewmember of the Lionfish that is still in full ability, Kane' quietly but insistently takes charge. The half-elf will lead the group with Linos (with Jozhur on his back) directly behind to provide directions. This also automatically keeps Linos down to a walk that the others can keep up. Then comes Zeoll with Spire on his back, and Shemseka with his bow both guards the back and covers the flanks.

"Are we ready? Good, then let us move. Linos Sir, please indicate the way."

ooc: Hey, DMs! The players in this game have been discussing via email our two players who have recently departed. In particular, our lack of party balance. We no longer have a point-man for combat. It is possible for Kane' the bloodwitch to buff himself to take over the role of tank, but it would require quite a bit of leg-work and his talents might be better used elsewhere.

Would it be alright if I had some surgery on Shemeska to fill this gap?

Kane takes the lead, with Linos shortly behind. Jozhur rides aboard the centaur and finds the ride surprisingly smooth.

Zeoll offers a shoulder to support Spire, but that is the best he can do.

Under Linos's guidance the party make slow progress through the jungle. Fortunately there are no more encounters as the day draws to a close.

Linos calls the group to a stop at the base of a large tree where he aids Jozhur dismount. "We should make camp here for the night. I will see what bounty nature will provide for us" He begins to scavenge for unknown things.

"Shemseka Sir, you are the best at woodcraft, I believe. Tell us what to do and we'll help to set up 'camp'. For night watch, I'll take first, Zeoll take second, and Shemseka third. If Jozhur and Spire are healed by then, they take 4th and 5th watch; all evenly spaced from after dinner to first light. And the day isn't over yet! - DM RobC
Tuesday October 22nd, 2013 10:01:00 AM

Linos begins foraging around for herbs that may aid the blinded members of the party. By the rejected way he mumbles to himself, it is clear he is having no luck. He nods in approval though as he watches Shemeska gather branches and leaves that have already fallen to the ground rather than cutting anything fresh.

Jozhur tries to aid them, but finds himself just getting in the way. The rest has given him time to recover his strength, but his vision is still impaired - as is Spire's.

Spire and Zeoll combine forces to channel healing energy across the entire camp. This is followed by Zeoll recanting many a tale about Eberyon and Maab. The linotaur sure has a lot to say on the subject, and seems to go on for hours.

The party set in for the night with the watch set as:
Kane'
Zeoll
Shemseka
Jozhur (Linos)
Spire (Kane')

The first three watches are uneventful. Noises can be heard all around as unseen creatures of the night go about their business, but always staying away from the party.

On the fourth watch, Linos and Jozhur take to guarding the camp. Linos sets to resting directly next to Jozhur, perhaps taking pity on the rogue.

"You had a rough day today" he says quietly as he settles in. "When I was young, one of the druids in our village explained to me the balance that must exist in nature and that unfortunately nature does not always agree with this balance. Her lesson stays with me to this day. To help maintain the balance I set about fashioning this axe."

He takes hold of Jozhur's hand and rests the axe horizontally on his open palm. The axe is weighted perfectly. "I crafted the handle from the branch of a fallen Whistal tree. It took some time to trade for the oil I required to treat it and polish it the way I wanted. The blade I shaped and sharpened for no less than twelve weeks. And when it was done, I returned to the druid for her blessing. It has served me well, but I find my talents now lie with a bow. I therefore gift this to you that you may help maintain nature's balance" Linos takes his hand away from the axe. "That and it may mean you hit something for a change" he chuckles as he lightens the mood.

Jozhur receives a hand-axe! Now if only he could see the thing...

Linos's expression changes and he furrows his brow. The animal noises to the south have stopped. The centaur already has his bow in hand with an arrow ready in the other. He gives a small kick to the feet of those currently asleep and motions for quiet as each person awakens.

A large figure, which appears to be trying to move quietly but clearly failing (stealth 2) emerges from the forest and peers around the encampment.

"Linos?" queries a rumbling voice from the minotaur shaped shadow. Again the creature seems to be trying to keep the volume level down, but again failing miserably.

Finally spotting the centaur, and not inconsequentially the readied bow, the minotaur raises its hands. "Peace, comrade. It's Magana. I've come to take up your offer to impart your wilderness lore unto me."

If Linos does not lower the bow, she stand motionless.

If he does:

I'll see that it remains safe, though if you want to see it put to good use, it would be better off in someone else's hands."

Upon hearing the commotion, Jozhur hunkers down and keeps quiet, tightly gripping the ax.

Centaur Island or Minotaur Island? - DM RobC
Wednesday October 23rd, 2013 2:35:34 AM

Jozhur and Spire are in the dark more than the rest as to what is going on.

Zeoll is quick to his feet and ready to react. The only thing staying his hand is that the intruder knows their guide by name.

A not so subtle minotaur emerges from the bushes clad in chainmail. An imposing figure to be sure, and one unexpected on Centaur Island.

Linos lowers his bow with an audible sigh. As if having one minotaur stomping about wasn't bad enough, here comes another. "Magana? I should have guessed as much by all the noise you were making. No doubt destroyed half the foliage between here and the port. And would you watch your step! You've just about flattened that asterion bush!" The centaur shakes his head as he finishes his lecture.

"Now isn't the time for a wilderness lesson. That said, this may be one of the few times your presence might be useful. It seems these outsiders could use some aid. There may even be the opportunity for battle if you stick with us. Only if you are up for it, of course" Linos grins at the challenge to Magana.

Clearly, these are old friends. For the benefit of the blind, Zeoll says, "We've encounterred a minotaurr, known to Linos, evidently named Magana."

Zeoll puts away his tanglefoot bag, stands tall, and approaches the newcomer.

"It is always good to meet a sisterr taurr," he says, holding out a hand. "I am Zeoll, an old wanderrerr, and it is trrue that we could use a hand."

Zeoll is an old liontaur with more grey in his mane than anything else. He has no armor, but he carries a honking big tower shield carved with sigils and signs honoring the fey king and his queen. There are wemic clan beads and a feather braided into his mane and tail-tuft. His clothes are bright orange and yellow and red.

Her large backpack thumps to the ground and she squat to rummage through it, eventually producing three scrolls and an arrow.

"I was told by one knowledgable in matters of magic that one of these is a healing scroll (Cure Mod lvl 2) and two are for curing blindness (Remove Blindness). Yet, when she offers scrolls that can cure blindness, Kane' immediately strides up. "Greetings, Magana Ma'am, I am Kane' Ma'Kai. I can make immediate use of those scrolls to provide healing to two of our companions if you are willing."

Kane' will wait until the scrolls are handed over, not considering to grab anything, and will immediately turn to cast one on Spire and one on Jozhur.

"Sorry, Jozhur Derile at your service. If its a fight you're looking for, we seem to have a knack for finding trouble."

Jozhur appears to be a fairly normal human, slightly smaller than average, with unkempt jet black hair that reached to his eyebrows. A fine longbow is slung across his back and several blades hang from his belt, including the axe Linos just gifted him.

Tensions ease as the newcomer introduces herself, and brings much needed supplies. Two of the scrolls are immediately taken up and used by Kane' to restore vision to Jozhur and Spire

Magana readily accepts Linos's invitation to join the party and relishes the thought of a battle in the near future.

===============

Magana asks Linos about the group's apparent lack of strength. "There was a minotaur with us earlier but he had to leave to safely escort one of the other outsiders back to port. As for me, Stallion Pholus 'requested' I provide an escort for them and to see that our laws are respected" The emphasis he places on 'requested' indicates it may have been more an order than a request.

Kane' is no doubt relieved that Jozhur and Spire can see again. He can now get a full rest and not have to worry about being too tired the next day.

Shem gives Magana a simplistic overview of the crew of the Lionfish. Privateers with a heart of gold? Time will tell. Magana's view of the 'backward-thinking centaurs' is met with a snort and smile from Linos. Who can tell what is going through his head at the moment?

Jozhur stealthily takes up watch. He stays alert whilst listening in on the conversations the others - Magana, Linos and Shem - are having.

Linos wordlessly sets to making sure any disruption the encampment caused the environment is addressed.

Kane' Ma'Kai (SteveK) AC14/ T14/ F11/ CMD 18) HP 40/40
Friday October 25th, 2013 2:06:53 PM

A morning arises and Kane' feels... reinvigorated. Again, letting Shemseka take the lead for breakfast and tearing down 'camp'. "Years and years, and I never knew putting a tent on the ground was possible let alone a nice way to spend a night."

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 HP33 of 33)
Friday October 25th, 2013 3:30:24 PM

In the early morning, Zeoll prays for his spells under the trees of the forest. "This is truly the Queen's place," he says, "out among the trees and plants she made back when the Wold was new."

Spire wakes up and immediately pulls out his spellbook, his eyes skimming over the familiar words as he relishes in his sight. When his spells are memorized, he will begin praying to Gargul. If Zeoll is still praying, and will allow him, Spire prays with the Liontaur.

(Brock) Jozhur AC19/14/15--CMD 16--HP 43/43
Sunday October 27th, 2013 10:51:45 PM

Jozhur asks Spire to have a look at the hand axe given to him by Linos.

"Is this just a finely crafted axe or is there magic within it?"

Jozhur takes the time to listen to Zeoll's tales. He shares some of his own stories of his life growing up in South Harbor, how he grew up stealing to get by and travelled to Rum to start a new life, but wound up shipwrecked near Bonetown.

Spire looks at the axe eagerly, casting [u]Detect Magic[/b] to see if any magic lies within. If there is, he will spend a moment determining what kind of magic. (Spellcraft: 31)

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 HP33 of 33)

Zeoll is glad to pray with Spire. Zeoll honors the fey King and Queen, but he has the greatest of respect for Gargul, who he has met, and for whom he has done great deeds.

Morning rituals commence. Zeoll and Spire pray together in the untouched wilderness. They feel completely at peace as they meditate.

Kane and Shem enjoy a hearty breakfast. After yesterdays events, they can't help but feel better on a full stomach.

Jozhur decides to rely on Spire's magical know-how for identifying the axe. Spire discovers it is a +1 Handaxe of Plant Bane

Magana has a little sleep in. Her snoring sounding like a boar may be approaching.

Linos shakes his head as he finishes cleaning up. "Shall I take point again?"

Kane' shakes his head, "No, Linos Sir, allow me to take the lead with you directly behind me. You move so much faster than us. I do not want to get lost and accidentally hurt any of your woods."

The half-elf considers for a minute before continuing. "Perhaps it would be best for the following order through the woods? This will allow the most protection and flexibility while in the woods. Jozhur, you keep watch on our backtrail, and Shem has top cover with his bow. Magana Ma'am, you be ready to defend Spire or come forward depending on the situation. Spire has incredible magical powers, but can't use them when crowded by enemies."

"Finally, everyone keep 10 feet apart to reduce big spore attacks like yesterday."

Monday October 28th, 2013 11:16:57 AM

In the morning Zeoll awakes and prays that his back will not go out today. He struggles to his feet and as usual wishes he knew that prestidigitation cantrip that would make his daily ablutions so much easier. Gosh darn rhumatiz.

A little while later, he says his usual morning prayer that his bowels will move nicely.

His Temperature Control spell lasts for 12 hours. He sees no reason not to cast that each morning. Zeoll also casts Create Water -- warm water for washing up, and hot and cold drinks for everybody.

He considers that when he has his Prestidigitation cantrip going, he will be able to flavor the water and give everyone hot tea or cool lemonade for drinks.

He looks around for any local plants that would make a nice tea. Survival (with two cantrips to help) 28.

Zeoll also looks around to see if anyone is still wounded. [OOC: Is anyone still wounded?!]

Usually Zeoll does not cast his Mage Armor spell. It only lasts three hours, after all. But he thinks about how those plant things caught the party unaware, and decides it is worth the expenditure of magical energy. JUST before the group sets off, Zeoll casts the protective spell.

Zeoll takes his usual place in the middle back. As the party walks, he casts Guidance and Taurs Try cantrips -- the latter to boost his Perception skill by +1.

He keeps a keen eye out while walking too: Perception check: 32 He says a quick prayer of thanks that he has not got the cataracts yet.

OOC: Everyone who tolerated Zeoll's stories last night gets a +2 on their next saving throw!

Try as she might to extend her morning rest, the mumbling of prayers and general camp conversation forces Magana to finally rouse herself. She slips her chainmail over her knee-length leather jerkin, and takes her weapon and herself a short ways from camp for a few minutes of privacy.

Upon returning she breaks out her days rations and listens to Kane's marching orders for the day, nodding her approval of his tactics (and his command presence).

Finishing her morning break fast, she seeks out Spire. "Good morning elfling! I see we are to be bound in our travels today." She huffs in satisfaction. "Be assured I am quite suited to playing the role of body guard to you. Stay close and I will keep you from further harm. Just watch out for the backswing of Utgard's Fist!" She pats her flail fondly.

As the day's march is started she keeps an eye out for trouble. (perception 24)

She also engages Linos when the opportunity presents itself during the day with inquiries into the lore of this particular wilderness area.

Marching order:
Kane'
Linos
Magana
Spire
Zeoll
Shemseka
Jozhur

The party begin the march through the morning. With Kane' in the lead position, the march is slower than yesterday. Linos seems to be gritting his teeth as his gives directions from second place.

Jozhur brings up the party rear. It is a trusting party that lets the rogue cover their backs.

Spire looks forward to not hitting the grund again until he plans to (as opposed to yesterdays unintended nap). Magana gives him fair warning to keep clear when her flail starts a-flailing.

The taurs are the more alert.
Magana and Zeoll Highlight to display spoiler: { Amongst the usual whistling of birds and the wind blowing through the leaves, Magana and Zeoll each hear the noise of twigs and branches snapping from behind the party. Perhaps some 30 feet away.}

Kane' diffidently ignores Linos' chafing, feeling of what it would be like if he had to teach healing to complete novices. They certainly haven't lost the experienced ranger in the woods this time!

He also thinks nothing of a rogue being in the rear, for Jozhur has the skills and has been with the Lionfish longer than Kane'. It's not like he is a thief or pirate after all. :-)

The mumbling tauric voices are just another gripe or piece of conversation until Zeoll calls out softly about someone on their tail. Thankful the others are all expert in their fields, Kane' doesn't interfere with the actions at the rear of the Lionfish group, but peers ahead to ensure they are not being surrounded.

Out from the woods walks a man wearing a blue and grey trimmed cloak and hat with a big black feather in it. Hands raised into the air for all to see.
"I mean no harm so please don't attack as my hands are not on my weapon. My names is Rozan Rel Astra,
I am after the bounty on the Captain Annoir and from what i am told is he has some massive backup so i can't go at him alone. The reward is large and can benefit us all."

He pauses to see the reaction of the group.

"I was also told back at Fort Stag that if anyone could get close to him it was this group."

He continues to walk and stops about 10 feet from the closest party member.

"So what say ye have room for one more in your party?"

Zeoll steps forward. "Well met, Rrozan Rrel Astrra." The newcomer's name is mangled by the liontaur's accent.

"Howeverr, Captain Annoirr is a trricky devil. How do we know you arre not his confederrate, sent among us as a mole? What dealings have you had with Annoirr, anyway?"

Zeoll's voice softens slightly. "Forrgive an old wemic's suspicion. But I have been betrrayed in the past, and I know how this can go so wrrong."

The flicking of his tail betrays his nervousness. Zeoll is an old liontaur with a mostly grey mane. He carries a huge sacred wood shield. He dresses in a bright orange, yellow, and red tunic, and carries no obvious weapon.

And welcome to Bonetown, Joe and Craig. It's definitely a fun and interesting campaign.

One more muscle for the road - DM RobC
Wednesday October 30th, 2013 6:32:12 AM

Zeoll is the first to act. He is unable to get a secret message across to the rest of the party to let them know what he has heard, and instead boldly calls out a greeting towards the noises.

Kane' keeps his focus ahead of the party. As the lead it is his responsibility to ensure they aren't walking in to a trap or being surrounded.

Spire readies himself for the worse and prepares to unleah a scorching ray should anything hostile burst out of the bushes.

Magana's martial training kicks in and she places herself between Spire and what may be harm. No use being subtle since the element of surprise has gone.

Jozhur - currently at the rear of the group - comes to the sudden realisation that others have detected someone (or something) approaching him from behind. He draws his shortsword and looks about.

A well dresssed man makes his way through the bushes, hands raised in a gesture of peace. How long he has been following the party is anyones guess. Rozan seems to have heard of the bounty on Captain Annoir and who can blame him - a bounty that large is sure to draw the attention of many a hunter.

Zeoll welcomes the man, but immediately questions his sudden arrival. Annoir is tricky to be sure, could this man work him for?

Magana is unable to get any read on the man either.

Rozan tries to convince the party of his honesty, explaining that if he were to attack it would have been earlier. What a way to gain some trust!

It seems to work though as the party welcome the new arrival.

Perhaps Domi does keep a watchful eye over Centaur Island? The party that found itself without muscle has had two warriors join them in less than 24hours. Will it be enough to take Annoir?

Current marching order:
Kane'
Linos
Magana
Spire
Zeoll

Where will Rozan fit in?

Kane' Ma'Kai (SteveK) AC14/ T14/ F11/ CMD 18) HP 40/40
Wednesday October 30th, 2013 8:58:44 AM

Kane' nods at the introductions and shyly smiles at Rozan as he points out strategy, nodding that it would be more likely. "Greetings, Rozan Sir, I am Kah-nay Mah-Kai of the Lionfish. Captain Annoir has betrayed many trusts and his patsys usually arrive cloaked in friendship, so you can see why we are wary of a dapper dressed person who just 'happens' to be wandering centaur woods alone. As it is, you are welcome to join us."

"However, the Stallion of Fort Stag is not convinced Captain Annoir has done any wrong to his island, and so our priorities are;
1) Find where Captain Annoir has been going when inland.
2) Gather evidence if he IS doing something illegal.
3) Bring him in alive if possible."

Kane' invites Rozan to the party and wiil be just behind Linos but in front of Magana. He nods at Zeoll, confident that if treachery is in any of the newcomers, they are at least all together and so can be more easily contained. Plus, their potential skills would all work best closest to the enemy!

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC22 HP33)
Wednesday October 30th, 2013 11:57:29 AM

Zeoll nods, adding that this fine ranger centaur, Linos, is here to make sure we are good guests.

"Note that we arre only allowed to hunt forr Annoirr so long as we follow centaurr law."

He stands as if to recite, and says, clearly quoting someone: "This means you arre to rrespect the Island - both its florra and fauna. Rrampant destrruction of eitherr will not be tolerrated. Go forrth and capturre yourr fugitives, but you cannot wantonly damage anything in the forest, or you will sufferr the justice of Domi yourrselves."

Zeoll then adds, "Those werre the worrds of Stallion Pholus to us. Both of ourr newcomerrs, Magana and Rrozan, must agrree to this if they want to join us."

"ALIVE?" Magana snorts her frustration. "If Gargul wants him to live, he will live! If Domi deems him just, nothing will stop him! The mere fact that we remove his head from shoulders is proof enough of guilt! What kind of game is the Stallion playing at?" She stomps back to her position in the marching order, muttering about backward-thinking, tree-humping, grass-eating centaurs.

"Fine, fine, fine. Capture it is. Can't promise not to stomp him slightly though. The High and Mighty Stallion didn't say anything about bringing him back 'pretty', right?"
