Meet the New Boss

DM Kathy
Friday November 1st, 2013 12:48:32 AM

First, everybody (except Jerry) take 1300 XP for the previous scene. Good job.

Asteron is inclined to look around in the storeroom, but he is overruled. You make your way to the only remaining door, and again Ragnarök kicks it down!

The door opens into an office. There is a desk, several chairs, a sofa, and a couple of bookcases. You recognize Gibbon Tunks, standing near the desk. Behind the desk sits a hard-faced human man in his 40s. This must be Boss Wathe.

In a chair in one corner, hands tied behind his back, you see a gnome with a shock of bright red hair. Tunks grins at you. "We got your friend," he says.

"Thank you, Tunks," says Boss Wathe in a voice like a load of gravel. "You mugs have been causing me a lot of trouble," he continues, looking at you. "But we got your boy, here, so here's how we're gonna play this. You're gonna leave, all nice-like, and then we'll let him go. Otherwise," Boss Wathe smiles. It's not a pleasant smile. "Otherwise he'll be the first to die."

[Everybody say hello to Jerry W! Please describe your character in your post, except Yngvar, who is invisible. Oh, and here's the map.]

nothing, maybe a shimmer in the air? nope, just some dust swirling about in a beam of light.

Yngvar casts mage armor on himself then moves into the room to I8.

Over the message spell; Asteron, can you step inside so we all can follow? Sure we don't want this little gnome to die, but we don't know who he is. Lets take these two out, No way they can kill him outright without dealing with us. Yngvar, stay invisible, try an go get him untied while we cause some distractions.

Za will squeeze through past Asteron if he has to, but will preferably wait until our large companion makes room. Making his way to D,7 (or C,7*-See below), Activating his Arcane strike during his move. With his sword infused with a piece of his arcane power he pulls it over his head and shouts Celfuriel! as he flings the purple outlined bastard sword end over end, flipping for Tunks' chest. It slashes across the goon and quickly returns to Za' Reeds waiting hands.

We don't negotiate with kidnappers! Waithe, you would have been better off fighting with the other six goons we've already taken care of.

Move to D,7 OR C,7 if I can only "throw" my weapon in a straight line. I don't think this is the case, but if you see it that way Za moves to C,7 so it is a straight line.

A small gnome, with a shock of red hair looks slightly relieved when it is obvious from the way the door is opened, that they aren't friendly with his captors.

He pulls his arm from behind his back as the ropes drop to the ground behind. "Boy my arms were killing me," he offers as he throws his hands in front of him and says, "Burn!" pointing his hands towards the man towards the man standing near the desk.

"Thanks, whoever you are," he says to the sword juggler.

He stands to his feet from the chair and eyes his equipment trying to figure if he can make a break for it..

Towering over all his companions, a figure of eight and three quarter feet in height looks at the world through inquisitive, dark eyes, set in a strong, black, minotaurian face. Below the face, a gray-green cloak of linen hides most of the body, with the exception of two cloven hooves, obsidian black, trimmed, and well-polished. Above the face, and hiding part of it, a wide-brimmed heavy felt hat of gray. On the back, a powerful-looking composite bow and a well-made backpack are silhouetted against the sky, while in his hands a large greatsword of very fine dwarven make rests ill at ease.

As the cloak parts, the glint of a sand-scrubbed agile breastplate of the finest blue steel can be seen, all its leather fittings well-oiled and tightly strapped. Two quivers in tandem bulge his right side at the waist,
while a water skin and a large dagger do the same on the left.

There is something unusual about the figure. Something that is not quite right. Oh, yes! How could that have been overlooked? The figure has golden horns!

Asteron knows there is little time to talk. "Any beneficial magic you have, send it my way as soon as I start getting hit!" He yells to no one in particular. Then, he moves forward, getting into the rage as he does so. He positions himself ten feet from Tunks, and lets his sword slice in a right to left arc, before really applying himself and slicing back from left to right. "You bested us once, Tunks, but you will not do so again!" The minotaur bellows a war challenge to his opponent.

In comes a drow, with a very bitter expression, he is decently tall and not too lanky, though he seems to be far from strong, his hair is blue, but a non-natural hue, making it obvious that it was altered with magic, his eyes are so dark they look almost completely black. His attire is far from impressive, some day, that might've looked like a remarkable wizard robe, now it's only an old piece of clothing re-purposed as an adventuring coat.

"Being bloody honest, we don't know the lad. But if he's enemies with you, he's an welcome ally. Hell, I'd befriend a dinosaur that attempted to hunt you down if I knew what it did.", he says, only opening half of his mouth, as if mocking both Wathe and Tunks, all while looking in his pockets for something.

Once he finds what looks like some piece of root, he chants some words, smashes them with his fingers and, after some very controlled motions, a misty substance emerges from his fingers, swiftly moving to each of his companions -- as well as the new comers' -- nostrils, filling everyone with supernatural speed and agitation.

Yngvar casts a protective spell and moves into the room.

Asteron shoves his way into the room and takes a swipe at Tunks with his sword. His blow misses, but with an heroic second effort, he succeeds! Tunks curses as the mighty sword bites into his flesh.

The gnome in the corner stands up and casts a burning hands. It does not seem to bother Tunks a bit. He dodges out of the way of the flames, managing to evade them altogether.

Ragnarök rushes over to Boss Wathe, attempting to get him in a headlock. At first, it seems as if the Boss may elude him, but with a heroic second effort, Rag succeeds!

Faust moves forward and Hastes his allies.

Tunks seems amused at Ragnarök's threat. "Go ahead," he says. "Boss Tunks has a nice ring to it, don't you think?" He slides up next to Asteron (a 5-foot step does not provoke an AoO), and attacks the big minotaur with his rapier. His first attack misses badly, but the second is a solid hit and the third is a critical hit. Asteron takes a total of 23 damage (some of it is cold damage; let me know if I need to break it down).

Rather than trying to break the grapple, Boss Wathe decides to just stab Ragnarök in the face. Or wherever's handy. He misses.

Asteron is hurt. Not on death's door, but he is hurt. And nothing gets a raging minotaur madder than being hurt. The cold he feels from the wound does not quench his rage. In fact, it may have increased it.

"Waaagh! Waaaaaaagh!" He yells as his sword slices once, twice, even three times, hoping to give Tunks something to fear... death!

Asteron goes nuts, as befits a barbarian of his size. Only two of his three blows hit, but Tunks is looking pretty bad.

Za'Reed throws his sword and follows it into the room. Tunks takes more damage, and now he is cursing freely. [OOC: I apologize, Marty; I was trying to get everybody positioned, and I forgot to go back and include your post.]

The gnome in the corner casts a protective spell.

Toregan fires a shot at Tunks that just goes wide.

Ragnarök pins Boss Wathe.

The last wound Tunks gave to Asteron last round is particularly troublesome. It continues to bleed, a lot. Asteron takes 9 points of damage from the bleed. Snarling, Tunks attacks again with his rapier, hoping to at least take Asteron down with him. His first hit is another critical, and Asteron takes another 14 damage. The second hit does 11 points of damage, which I believe puts Asteron down. Tunks takes a 5-foot step and aims his last blow at Za'Reed, just barely missing.

Boss Wathe tries to escape from Rag's pin, but fails.

And the map.

Spots dance before Asteron's eyes as he takes his final swings at Tunks. He hits--once. It is Za'Reed who finishes off Boss Wathe's lieutenant with an Arcane Strike. Tunks slumps to the floor, and now he is the one doing the bleeding. Toregon's shot is on target--but not needed.

Yngvar's summoned archon casts Aid, buying Asteron a few more precious seconds. The invisible mage attempts some first aid, with limited success.

Then out of nowhere, the unknown gnome comes through with a healing spell, and Asteron's wounds finally close. Faust's wand heals him a little more, and he is well out of danger.

Meanwhile, Ragnarök is sitting on Boss Wathe, who isn't going anywhere. The man curses and threatens, but cannot break the monk's solid grip.

[I'm not going to include a map; Tunks is down, and Wathe can't escape Rag's grip.]

Asteron feels the rush of healing magic coming in, closing his wounds, pulling him back from the jaws of death. He lets the rage fade, and uses his blade to steady himself.

"Disarm Boss Waithe, tie him up, and search him and the building thoroughly. I wish I could go along, but I fear I am not much help at the moment. Let me catch my breath." The minotaur makes a quick prayer of thanks to Imod before continuing, "and perhaps it is time to turn Waithe in to the people of Town. They should be the ones to pass judgment on him, I think. After all, they are the ones that have suffered under his care."

As quick as Asteron is to kill in battle, he's not as willing to just slit the throat of a pinned foe. "Thanks for the healing, all. For a moment I was certain that I was gone for good." The towering taur turns to the gnome. ''Now, master gnome, would you mind introducing yourself? What name do you go by?"

"I have some questions for Wathe myself, but after that, I fully agree, though we ought to fill the people in on some of his behind the scenes sins.", adds Faust to Asteron's line.

"But indeed, do introduce yourself, master gnome, we might not be allies as of now, but since we share a foe, it might be but a matter of time before we're together drinking and telling tales."

Good job gnome... Thanks for helping out our big man here. As far as Waithe goes, you guys seem to know how to handle this. I'll stand by and help search; Waithe reign is a bit more personal to you all and the citizens of this town. I'm here if you need me though.

"But a moment and I'll be glad to introduce myself, if you'll hold still master Minotaur," Smith says as he mutters another prayer to Eberyon, a healing touch flowing through his fingers that flow into the large man-beast.

Standing up and straightening his shoulders, he brushes off his garments, stands as tall as he can and executes a perfect bow. "I am Smith Wigglesworth, bringer of Eberyon's repentance, and I am at your service."

"I was certain that those two meant my doom - they kept grumbling about a group of adventurers - you fine folks, I'd presume - and the trouble you were causing. They seemed to mean to use me as some sort of bargaining chip with you if it came to that - I am grateful to see that it didn't, by the way."

Rag waits for help to tie Wathe down. The Monk is pleased at least to see even a vile man as Boss Wathe goes unharmed and can be brought to justice.

"All in all, Wathe did a fine job to make this town grow strong, even dispite his bad nature to make everyone pay for his 'serice'... perhaps if he could be persuaded to no longer supress the town and instead make trade flourish between town and the Outpost the city folk might even consider keeping him as their leader... a Mark of Justice on him might persuade him to let go of his vile nature..."

Rag knows that he's stretching the patience of his friends and he's uncertain how the townsfolk will react but it's better that killing a defenceless foe...

Later he turns to Asteron and says : "I appologise master Asteron that I could not be of any more aid in your fight with Tunks... you truly honored your kin and saved us all. Should we have a Bard among us, I'm certian he would honor this fight with a song of your bravery."

Your new gnomish friend introduces himself as Smith Wigglesworth, and casts another healing spell on Asteron.

Za'Reed finds some rope and ties up Boss Wathe, while the rest of you discuss what is to be done with him. Asteron and Faust favor turning him over to the townsfolk, while Ragnarök suggests he could be left in charge, compelled to do good via a Mark of Justice.

Yngvar, meanwhile, is looking for magic items. He finds none in the desk, but several on Tunks and Boss Wathe.

Faust begins to question Boss Wathe. "Why I didn't want you on the scene?" he repeats. "Ya kidding? You guys cost me my best talent, and screwed up my plans for that lousy Trading Post. I gotta lot a time and dough sunk into this place, and I didn't want you mutts lousing it up."

"These... mutts... as you call us, had enough of a bite to deal with most of your talent, and whatever is left has run away. Tell me!" And the minotaur got very close to Boss Wathe's face, so close that his hot breath was felt by the man, "Tell me why should we not just slit your throat and be done with you once and for all!"

The minotaur pulled his blue steel dagger from its sheath, and moved the point until it was less than a finger's width from the boss' right eye. "Tell me why I should not just pluck your eyes out in payment for all the pain and suffering you have caused. Tell me!"

Asteron was really, really, angry. Wathe had killed and destroyed, and his defense was that he had much time and money invested in his operation. His next words had icy steel in them, the icy steel of death: "and take care that I like your answer, or you will not live much after you utter it, I swear!"

Za shrugs his shoulders and sheaths his sword, after hearing Waithe's comments, and name calling. Something tells me Waithe shouldn't be left in charge here. Did you really think you could control everyone through fear and taxes? You can't buy loyalty, but you surely financed your downfall, mutt!

The minotaurs words to Waithe strike Za as very cold; and probably truthful indeed. And they should be.

[i]He deserves to Die. He's lucky Rag held him down. If not for that he'd met the end of my blade for sure. Manipulating and extorting people who are having a hard enough time living among the conditions of this place. What, if not that, can be considered evil?

IN any case Za doesn't care much who gets left in charge of The Freehold. He feels he's proven his loyalty to this group from the Trading Post and thats enough for him for now. If the group decides to have a hand in what happens here after this, then he'll do his best to help out.

He walks over to Tunks and rolls him over on his back, if he isn't already, and begins searching for anything that may be useful. Asking Yngvar, You seeing anything that might be worth keeping.

Asteron is very intimidating, but Boss Wathe is made of sterner stuff [Will save 22]. "Well, ya got a point there," he says calmly. "I shoulda hired you boys from the beginning. My mistake, but see, there's time to fix it. Long as there's no eye-poking or throat-slitting." He eyes Asteron's weapons nervously. "I sill got some cash; what say we divvy it up and figure out how to run this town proper-like? I got the know-how, and you boys got the talent. And initiative, which I like. So whaddaya say?"

Za'Reed adds his threats to Asteron's, then begins searching the body of the downed Tunks. Yngvar points him to the magic items, and soon Za has removed Tunks' chain shirt, his rapier, his belt, his cloak, a ring, and a set of thieves' tools.

Smith retrieves his own gear, and recommends turning Wathe over to the townsfolk, a sentiment that Toregan wholeheartedly embraces.

Ragnarök, with Yngvar's help, removes Boss Wathe's magic items: a breastplate, a short sword, and a dagger.

Asteron snorts. "You are not correct, ex-boss Wathe, you have no cash left. WE have cash now. And your know how would get us killed, just like it got your crew killed. Look at the great Tunks. He was good, even better than me, but he made a mistake. He sided with you. Now, his equipment is ours, just like yours". As Asterons strength returns, so does his blood lust subside.

"If you agree, let's get him out in the open, and gather the townsfolk. They should make the call." He tells his companions. "Also, is any of you good with locks? There is the chest in the back room that we should check out, but it may be trapped or locked, or both. If any of you can check it out, I can carry it outside."

It had been a hard-fought battle, but they had prevailed. He had thought he would die, yet he had not shied from his duty, so he had also prevailed against himself. Imod would be pleased. Lifting his blade, he started moving. "Shall we?"

Za chuckles a bit when Rag forces Waithe to his feet. You really messed with the wrong people Waithe. Better hope the towns folk have a heart. If it's up to us, your a dead man.

Za lets the more intelligent minds of the group figure out which items are which,
I'm no good at locks or traps. But I wouldn't mind gathering the townsfolk.

Following Rag outside Za will go around and gather everyone he's able to. Basically he'll go into Miss Sussy's, Otto's, the Inn and then walk back slowly the "town Square" .

Rag too nods at Asteron's idea to let the townsfolk decide about Wathe's faith. Just before they go, the Monk casts a Mark of Justice upon Wathe making sure he will never again do harm to the Townsfolk nor the Outpost.

He's intrigued by the items they recovered. Too many blades and armor... but perhaps here and there something he might use. He'll join the search of the back room not expecting too many traps though. But just in case he does check the surroundings. One never knows how sick the former Boss really was. (perception 30)

Once outside, Rag will hold aside but in case anyone wants to pierce Wathe to his sword, Rag will try to interfere... enough blood has been spilled today...

"I'll go take a look at the lock, if it's perchance magically rigged, I mean, other than that I don't think I can do much but stare it down until it opens...but if it's not magical, there shouldn't be much harm in forcing it.", concludes Faust, casting detect magic on himself and taking the opportunity to eye all the rooms up to the storage one, in case any of them happen to have a magical aura.
