The Broken Pick

DM Tanner
Monday October 21st, 2013 11:40:48 PM

Lights of every hue stream from the windows of this sprawling three-story building. The Broken Pick. Conversing voices, snippets of song, and the clatter of crockery spill into the street. Odors of exotic tobaccos, yeasty drink, and barbecued meat suffuse the air. The wall facing the street is a sculpted formation of flowstone, like dozens of drooping hands, apparently built up from water falling from somewhere high above. Here and there, stone faces leer out from the deposits.

Conversations near the entryway go quiet as many patrons in this common room look you over. Few of the faces seem welcoming, and most that do look hungry or insane. Dusky duergar, wild-eyed derro, slim drow, and stranger creatures sit or stand in the dozen or so lantern-lit niches scattered about this large, high-ceiling chamber. A central bar is stuffed with bottles, casks, pipes, vials, cigarillos, and less familiar paraphernalia.

Cloaked in white linen, a humanoid figure stands behind the bar. Is it draped head-to-toe, with only a slit at the eyes open. Four servers move about the room, similarly shrouded. A side door apparently opens into a busy kitchen that is alive with the sounds and scents of cooking. From a great stone chair across the common room, a humanoid figure observes, wrapped in and hooded by a crimson robe that has a complex pattern of eyes on it. Whatever this creature is, you senses that little escapes its notice.

Sivan motions. "Come, let's take a seat at the table. The bar may be... a little too much for you right now."

Ariach enjoys when Wilma offers to accompany him. He is quite sure the smart woman will avoid to translate parts of the conversations which will force the young warrior into action versus their hosts.

Entering "The Broken Pick" a shiver runs down his spine. The amount of gathered creatures, all known for their evil intentions, paralyses the young man.

Alleah smiles upon entry to the tavern. It reminds her greatly of some of the dives she frequented in Dirt City.

She goes over her mental checklist: Do a quick scan of the room, don't make eye contact for too long, and don't draw attention. (Perception: 26) In the event of drawing too much attention though, she will need someone to use as a shield for potential trouble.

Alleah maintains a healthy distance to Emrys.

"Yes, I would much prefer a table. We've been on our feet all day, a comfortable chair would be most inviting." Emrys is captivated by his surroundings, carefully taking in all the sights, scents and sounds. (Perception: 31)

Once they find a table large enough to accommodate them all, he asks Sivan a question, "Sivan, the person with the all-seeing robe, a very interesting choice in attire, what is his purpose?" As he answers, he looks around for a shrouded waiter or a menu.

Sivan and the Vanguard seat themselves at a large corner booth table. Sivan's bodyguards saunter to the bar and seat themselves on stools, keeping you in the corner of their eyes.

Sivan answers Wilma. "The Broken Pick is popular for two things; the food, and the information. Most of the patrons here are gathered for the latter." The duergar nods his head toward the crimson-robed figure with the pattern of eyes. "That is Indicio. An information broker. Anything I cannot tell you, he will. But be warned, he usually charges a steep price for his goods. Always a fair price, but he knows the dark of many top-shelf things."

A server approaches you within a few minutes and stands before the table, silent but expectant. A close look at a server reveals the creature is so gaunt it is nearly skeletal. The servers are silent, relying on gestures instead of speech to communicate with patrons.

The gaunt figure reaches into a small fold in its linen wrap and produces a sheet of paper. In black ink is written what appears to be a menu, in the wriggling script of Undercommon.

Emrys does in fact translate the menu to the others. He's disappointed that Tuck is unwilling to partake. Tuck is missing out on such an experience, he thinks. Speaking to the waiter, Emrys gives his order, (in undercommon) "I will have a bowl of your mushroom soup ... does it come with bread? As for the others, I will translate their order. What do you have to drink?"

Turning to Grell, he asks, "Look Grell, I'd bet you'd like the marrow & liver stew, Mmmmm! Sounds like a hearty meal." He wonders if anyone else is going to order anything. To the group he adds, in common and in a low tone, "We can try and appear to be more cordial and relaxed; let's not give them more reasons to keep staring at us. How about a beverage, Tuck? Ariach?"

Looking back at the waiter, Emrys requests, "Oh, my dear friend here," indicating Alleah, "would like one of your finest cigars. She is a connoisseur and expects only the best. Can you show us an assortment?"

Looking to Sivan after everyone's orders have been taken. "Very interesting. They sell information here so openly. We are in need of it, but we don't wish everyone knowing our business. Do these transactions take place in a more private room?"

She looked towards the hooded, robed server taking the table's order with an inquiring expression, clearly expecting a response from them. The server does not speak, but simply points with a bandaged hand to the menu's text stating that any requests may be made to the kitchen.

Once everyone is finished, it nods in response to the order. It seems to float across the floor toward the kitchens and disappears behind a beaded curtain.

Sivan motions with a hand toward the seated figure in the crimson robes. "Indicio does his business as he wishes. He is a first rate blood, and no one can nay-say him in the information market. When you step before him, you are shrouded in a globe of darkness. No one in the inn can hear or see you."

The server brings out your food. Two orders of mushroom soup, with a basket filled with steaming slices of dark, nutty bread. It also brings on a tray several glasses filled with a fruity, fragrant wine. It bows silently and departs.

Sivan takes a drink, sighing in satisfaction. "Now, what would you like to know about Bthanchend?"

Alleah gets the sense that she is under observation as the marches across the room to the kitchen and boldly raps her tiny knuckles on the wall next to the curtain. Peeking through the curtain she sees what looks like a typical large kitchen, a couple of fires burn vigorously with several large pots suspended above them. The lighting is dim, coming from several fungi growing from rafters and beams in the walls. A long counter is visible with several more of the shroud wrapped creatures working on it. Unfortunately, Alleah is vertically challenged and unable to see the counter top.

Tuck finds nothing more dangerous than what would typically be found in a tavern.

Ariach gets cozy with Wilma.

Wilma asks "What's the official stance on, oh, say--somebody stealing something from the Wold above and then trying to hide out here in your city?" Wilma asks rather baldly, picking up her spoon. "Uh...hypothetically speaking, of course..." She listens closely, stirring her soup as she absorbs the response to her query.

Sivan lowers the glass he was drinking from and slowly rolls the liquid within as he considers Wilma's question, an interesting question, first, how can one prove to whom anything belongs? Second, who questions the current ownership? Know these answers and you will have yours.

Grell had been quiet, maybe it was the hunger getting to him as he suddenly jumps in and orders a couple of items from the menu. He scans the room and sees a preponderance of races unfamiliar to him, probably a bunch of underwoldian's. No orcs though.

Sivan quirks an eyebrow at Emrys' display. Settling back in his chair, Sivan suggests that is a question for a different time and place.

Emrys tastes the soup then gives the mushrooms a closer look. He realizes these are inky cap mushrooms.

And Tuck enjoys his water, crystal clear, icy cold, and clean.

I've found that surface people don't generally just happen to wander by. Sivan gives Wilma a shrewd eye, Are you wishing to hide here, or find someone else hiding?

Sivan listens to Vaniime, and sets his own spoon down, Are you asking about indentured service, or ostage? My third child is ostage with another trader. It helps to keep the peace. Of course, taking any intelligent creature, within the city would be crass at best. But I think you speak of something more specific?

Tuck suggests speaking to the shrouded figure presiding over the tavern. Tuck gets the impression that some of the eyes on the cloak are focused on him.

Wilma informs Sivan of their position as seekers of something misplaced. Sivan slowly stirs his own mushroom soup before taking a drink from his water glass. In that case, speaking with 'the watcher' may be your best option.

Ariach comes to the realization that the trader Sivan probably has a healthy dose of self interest.

Emrys digs into his Inky Cap Mushroom soup, while responding to Tuck with concerns of Ignacio.

Grell enjoys his soup and makes a suggestion of some alternative modes of communication.

Sivan's smile turns frosty. An interesting supposition. That I would know when, where, and how you would journey to Bthanchend? It must be that I wish to abscond with your copious and abundant trade goods. By a fire toad's left toe, why would a trader look at anything new as an opportunity for business? I can see that my time has been wasted. Enjoy your soup and wine!

Sivan stands from the table, pulls out a gold coin and tosses it on the table before turning and leaving.

Meanwhile, Alleah sees one of the waiter's hold out a small richly designed box carved from several fine woods and sanded finely enough to appear polished. A small piece of paper is unceremoniously stuck to one corner with a symbol of a platinum coin scribbled on it.

The waiter cracks open the case. Inside the case are displayed four cigars. The outer wrappers are shaded from a light golden color to a deep burgundy. Several aromas waft up from inside the box, subtle nut and wood flavors, from sweet to tangy and spicy.

We only know enough that we are all-too-aware that we can't accomplish our mission on our own--we need a local connection that is at least moderately trustworthy. Is there some way that we can establish some sort of trust between yourself and our group?"

Sivan departs amid askance looks from the other tavern patrons. His prompt exit is noted with raised eyebrows. After a few moments to enjoy the cigarillos, one of the gaunt, white-robed servers approaches your table. It bows slightly, eliciting a small creaking noise, and raises a gaunt arm in a welcoming gesture towards the seated figure in the rear of the building.

Indicio stirs, moving for the first time since you entered the tavern. He raises his head and looks toward you, his face nothing but darkness from the recesses of his deep hood. He lifts an arm, draped in crimson cloth with golden eyes like the rest of his unseen body, and makes a gentle waving motion towards him.

It seems you have been invited.

The Vanguard warily make their way toward the seated figure. The side conversations at tables and booth are hushed as eyes follow your footsteps. The servers and barkeep go about their business without hesitation, not even seeming to notice you.

You near the chair - or rather more like a throne. It is made of solid darkwood, paneled with sheets of obsidian glass on the armrests and back. The crimson-robed figure stays still, then motions again for you to come forward. You cannot help but notice, now that you are closer, that the golden eyes set into the robe... move. Though apparently some sort of ornamentation, the eyes follow you as you approach, blinking their lids periodically.

As the last of your party nears, Indicio raises a hand and with a humming bwoom, a sphere of shimmering, silent air surrounds you. Though you can see the rest of the tavern, albeit hazily, you can see the other patrons look away. This must be the privacy that Sivan spoke of.

The crimson-robed figure reaches up with both hands, grasps the edges of the hood, and pulls back the fabric from its face.

"Hello, I am Indicio." His speech is in Common, and sounds like two pieces of dry leather rubbing together.

In the last three centuries I have been destroyed twice, and both times my attackers were slain by my hand before they could find my phylactery." He raises a hand to his mouth in mock embarrassment. "Oh, my, there I go again. Always spilling the proverbial beans. That is still a phrase on the surface world, correct? It has been ages."

The skull swivels (not turns, swivels) to face Emrys. "This is no disguise, young man. I have been dead for quite some time. As have the servers and barkeep of this fine establishment. Clients must know that my dealings are devoid of even the slightest shred of deception. In fact, there is so much deceit and subterfuge in this city, that I bewilder most of my enemies with honesty. Wily Sivan likely withheld information concerning my nature as a joke at your expense."

To Alleah, "By dealings I mean formal or semi-formal arrangements for the exchange of services, goods, or money. Consensual activities. If you want to steal from them, then I would be happy to tell you how to reach their vaults and their current security measures. But I don't want to distract you from the task that I will require."

To Vaniime, "I know that you need many things. The first of which I already have - the earth node token." He reaches to his waist and pats a small bulge. "In fact, I have it right here with me. You may have it as soon as you agree to my terms. Concerning the information you seek... your friend here," he motions to Emrys, "...mentioned yuan-ti. There are but a handful of yuan-ti in the city, and unless the person you are looking for happens to be a member of a prominent leather-working family, then there can be only one other possibility. She is a member of the Assassin's Guild, and is quite adept at her profession." He pauses a moment, and you suspect that he would be smiling right now if he still had flesh on his face. "I can tell you her name in addition to the earth node token. Considering you are asking for her, and asking about the whereabouts of freshly-dug bones... a yuan-ti assassin has stolen some rather important remains from you or your employer, and you have been tasked with retrieving them. I can find out where she is hiding, where she is keeping the remains, and how to reach her. But of course, for that kind of information I would require recompense." He holds up a bony finger. "You cannot work with the Assassin's Guild, since you are trying to find one of their members. I doubt they would be accomodating." A second bony finger. "The Merchant's Guild has money and arms, but little in the way of intelligence services. They come to me." A third bony finger. "House Pelezek is drow, and noteworthy for their habit of duplicitous dealings."

He lowers his hand. "Not only can I offer you the earth node token and the identity of your quarry, but everyone else is either inept, insane, or oppositional to your goals."

After letting his words sink in for a moment, he casually waves his hand in the air. "And, of course, I happen to be the most powerful caster of divinations within a thousand miles. Unless you count one of the illithid hive-brains, but I hear they can be rather cantankerous."

Simply knowing her physical location will be of little use if you do not know the dangers along the way." He steeples his bony fingers in a business-like manner. "The first service is relatively simply. Retrieve some mushrooms from an island. There is some danger, but relatively little for surfacers. A spore released by the fungal infestation on the island is rather deadly for those born in the Heartwold." He twiddles his fingers as he discusses the next job, apparently in excited anticipation. "The second service may be more to your liking... I want you to kill a drow matron. Vanquish her, in righteous fury. I may be evil, but she is devilish in comparison. I only joke about eating babies. I can tell you how to bypass the majority of her defenses."

Grell growls a little as Indicio seems to go out of his way to be cryptic. It's almost as if he was drawing this out for the express purpose of irritating his sister. And *nobody* gets to irritate his sister except for him! The warrior lets his breath out in little puffs.

Then the lich lays out his terms and Grell's brow furrows. Kill a drow matron...just because this *thing* says so. It sounds so...well...wrong. He nods eagerly when Tuck chimes in. "Yeah, we don't just off people for fun." Grell taps his foot impatiently as he casts around looking for something to take his frustration out on. (Percept=5).

Indicio sits quietly as the Vanguard talks amongst themselves. The eyes of his robe continue to dart about, looking in all directions. Several eyes turn and stare at each as they talk.

Responding to the halfling, Indicio says Matron Ulvirjss, a downright nasty bitch. And that's by my standards. You would do well to rid the Wold of her. Why not get paid to do it?

The skull rotates slowly, taking in each of the Vanguard, its soulless eyes staring at each Do we have a deal?

Heads - the head of the drow matron - means that she will quite literally go for the head of the drow matron. Tails and she'll turn tail and seek the merchants guild instead. She casually flips the coin, catches it in mid-air and looks at the result atop her hand. (D2=1. Heads)

"Now to convince everyone else this is a good thing..."

"It couldn't hurt to at least check out the assassins and this drow. We could well be doing the Wold a favor by taking care of her, regardless of who the employer is"

About the Drow (DM Cayzle)
Saturday November 16th, 2013 9:00:58 AM

The tavernkeeper moves his bony head from side to side, listening, presumably, but it is impossible to detect emotions or motives on his "face."

You are heroes, I take it, and you seek a noble reason to act. Very well. Consider that this matron is a torturer, who kills for pleasure and personal power. Consider that you will come upon her as she is at her work of pain, and that innumerable innocents will be spared if she dies.

He pauses as if to silently clear an empty throat. Perhaps he is unused to contemplating a situation from the point of view of one who is good.

Let me make this clear. I am an influence for order and control here. The drow are a chaotic and destabilizing influence. I have been working subtly to disrupt their power in this town. Nearly everyone here appreciates my influence, but gratitude does not last, and others seek to displace me."

Indicio's voice falls to a whisper. "The Assassin's Guild has decided to seek an alliance with House Pelezek. If my agents were to disrupt this burgeoning accord, I fear I'd do more to cement the relationship than diffuse it. I ask you to eliminate Ulvirjss, matron of the house and a psychotic to boot. I have knowledge of a hidden route into her secret torture chamber, where she slinks away from her duties to House Pelezek to apply her savage arts to hapless victims she takes from Bthanchend's alleys. I have arranged matters so the drow will believe her death to be the work of the duplicitous Assassin's Guild. That will be the end of that."

"What more can you want to know before you see the heroism of the task I have set you?"

Gods, this whole situation was more painful than her barbarian brother could understand at the moment: Wilma is a cleric of Gargul, standing in the presence of the Unholy Grail (as it were) of Undead Beings--every single fiber of her being was screaming to do its utmost to destroy this animated flagrant affront to her patron deity..!

And yet, her wisdom was such that she knew she had not one-tenth the ability she needed to accomplish such a thing right now. To add insult to this moral injury, Indicio was completely logical and most likely quite correct when he pointed out that he was only one with the information the group needed to accomplish their contractual obligation to the Wold above as well as being able to eventually leave the UnderWold.

...and all the paradox was testing her self-control, because she still wanted to smite Indicio soooooo badly..!

Decision Time! (DM Cayzle)
Monday November 18th, 2013 2:16:18 PM

Tuck and Grell are reluctant to deal with a figurative devil, and want to get some confirmation, or at least step back and talk about it out of the lich's earshot.

Vaniime and Emrys find themselves on the other side of the issue, seeing no reason to delay.

Alleah nods, having a moment ago expressed a desire to proceed with the lich's deal.

Wilma is struggling so hard with self restraint that she has no mental bandwidth to even consider the choice the party faces.

=====

[OOC: Here we see how DM's styles come into play in a game. I want to move forward in the game. I have three people willing to take the lich's deal at least as far as fighting an evil drow matron. Two are on the fence and want to delay. Two more have not given an opinion, both for good RP reasons. Therefore, I'm inclined to just go forward, but as we are just now learning each others' styles, I'll give it one more day to debate.]

=====

The lich waves a boney hand. "Go, step outside, discuss. Come back if you are interested."

=====

Ariach, of course, stands waiting outside the tavern. He notices Sivan watching from a distance off. The merchant seems both jittery and curious. Although only a few minutes have gone by, Ariach feels slightly nervous. And well he should -- this is not a place for those who live in sunshine, and especially not a place to be apart from friends.

Then Sivan ducks into an alley, and a moment later, his friends emerge. They quickly fill him in on what has transpired, and the possible opportunity you have for success.

Now there is one last chance to debate and decide. Step back in and accept the deal: information in exchange for two services ... or seek out some confirmation that the lich is on the up-and-up ... or pursue some other path to your goal. What will it be?

[OOC: I'll be going with majority vote, please!]

"Everything I believe in is being challenged just by the existence of Indicio," Wilma admits without preamble, "But my issue with him is that he is actively avoiding the rightful judgment about the way he has conducted his...life, as it were...while in The Wold. He died and should have gone to the halls of Gargul to receive his judgment, yet he has used foul magicks to cheat Gargul out of his given duty." The redhead's face and voice are tight as she continues:

"We are nowhere near powerful enough to fight Indicio at this time, so wisdom would dictate...that we wait on that aspect," Wilma pauses to draw in a breath, clearly finding the next part very much NOT to her liking:

"Wisdom...also emphasizes that we know nothing of the details about Bthanchend, its people and--most importantly for us--how to get what we came for. Indicio is the key to that, whether we like it or not. My parents were often forced to work on behalf of the very evil Parnoth the Green Dragon...but, in the end, they ended his evil at the proper time. I am hoping that this will be the case with us, as well."

Wilma's vote is: YES, do the favor for Indicio and live to kill him some other day.

However, we can't in good conscience take his word for it. He could be lying or it could be a trap. Van joins the others outside with Ariach and listens to the conversations occuring without judging or making any comment until all have said their piece.

"I understand your issue with this Ariach. Both you and Wilma have philosophical issues with dealing with evil and undead. I do not disagree with you there. But we also took a contract to return the bones to our now employer. We are not working for or with Indicio, but more parallel to where we both want to rid the world of some evil. this time being this drow matron.

There is nothing saying we have to kill her, particularly if she is doing nothing wrong when we find her, but I am guessing that we will find that she is just as evil and disgusting as Indicio has said.

I will not make anyone here do this and those who do not may try and return to the surface, though apparently we need the key that Indicio has to do that, and there will be no hard feelings but I am going to complete the conteract we took come hell or high water. And then when I have the ability I am going to return here and find a way to shove Indicio's Phylactery down his throat and hope he chokes on it."

Moving on...

The Vanguard stands arrayed before Indicio, once more his cloak covers his skull while the eyes of his robes continue to dart about.

You have chosen. Regardless of your personal feelings, consider every story you have heard of drow, their cruelty, their machinations. And then you will have but a glimmer of what Matron Ulvirjss is. Indicio raises one bony finger from its rest on his chair. One of the servants stops, walks into the kitchen and returns with a small finely crafted wooden box.

The servant stops at Indicio's side and pulls open the lid. Inside, a velvet lining cushions a small crystal bottle. a smoky silvered liquid swirls gently inside the bottle, hinting at its magical properties. Follow my servant to the old tannery on Matron Road near the wall that encircles Noble's Bluff. The skin shop's ghastly smell yet lingers in the area. Inside, on the southern wall, find a green stain int he shape of a three-fingered hand. When my servant claps his hands, apply this oil to that spot, which will then open to a passage under the building. Go right, then follow the tunnel to its highest point. You'll come to the doorway of the chamber used by Matron Ulvirjss for her arts.

Return when your task is done. Speak not of this to any other. The cowl over Indicio's head lowers, clearly dismissing the Vanguard. The eyes of the robe continue to dart about, though now several of them watch the Vanguard intently.

"I believe a quick perusal of Matron Ulvirjss' secret chamber, once we get there, would provide us evidence to her moral proclivity. If we don't find the proof of wickedness, as Indicio has claimed, we simply leave. Of course, I could simply ask around and gauge reactions. If Ulvirjss is as diabolical as described, it would be no secret among the natives. However I suggest we get some rest to better prepare. I know it has only been a day, but it feels like we've been on our feet for four straight months. My spells are almost completely depleted."

In an attempt to console Wilma, he says, "I can imagine how hard this is for you. Your restraint and moral fiber in the face of such evil is inspiring. Understand this though, Indicio's presence is now known to us. We know of his phylactery, we know where he is. This knowledge is power, as he himself has so thoroughly demonstrated. Believe it or not, but today Indicio is many steps closer to Gargul's judgement than he was the day before."

Alleah happily follows the servant to the room. It doesn't take long for her to realise that the groups numbers outweigh the number of beds available. She looks for the largest bed, and takes her bedroll out of her pack.

"You guys can work out who takes the beds. I'll sleep under this one" the halfling shoves her bedroll underneath the bed and grabs a handfull of bread and cheese for a midnight snack.

When the time comes for rest she scoots under the bed and into her bedroll - but not before placing her dagger under the pillow.

Ariach nods in agreement when he hears Tuckīs words but doesnīt say anything until they arrive the sleeping chamber.
There he takes off his amor and starts to polish his shield and armor. He has used this work a couple times before to organize his thoughts.

"You all know that Tuck is right. If we follow Indicioīs instructions we arenīt more than assassins. Not paid in gold but paid with informations. If we fullfill the plan Indicio wins twice. First he gets rid of a powerful enemy- the drow matron probably is. Second he forces us to do evil even if our action contains killing an evil person.

"From what I've heard about liches, I think that Indicio would eat us for breakfast. I think attacking him would be a bad idea. But we should consider also that killing this drow matron will bring the fury of her house against us. If we do kill her, and I'm not suggesting that we do without the proper reasons, and we're discovered, I think we can assume that we will be hounded for our deed."

Tuck sets his pack and staff down against a wall. "This is a huge deal, guys. I mean, we took a contract to find some bones and we're now committing to killing someone. I believe the scales have become unbalanced. We can walk away from bringing back the bones and suffer fewer ramifications than we would if we killed Ulvirjss. We should not become so narrow-minded on one task that we are willing to sacrifice our good nature."

He sighs, and slides down into a cross-legged sitting position. "My decision still stands. I will go with you to see if this Ulvirjss needs to be... removed. We will have to wait until we have the experience and knowledge to take him on. Until then, we will need to use the opportunity he's provided to see if he's telling us the truth. If this Matron truly is as evil as he says, then the proof of that will lie where we go. I don't like the idea that what we may do will most likely benefit him, but there IS a chance that he's actually telling the truth--or, at least, part of the truth. If so, then it may turn out to be our duty to remove that female from The Wold as well."
