[Everybody take 3,000 XP for the last scene. That's everybody as in everybody.]
Yngvar, Smith, and Toregan all examine the magic items to see what they are.
Tunks had a +1 chain shirt, a +1 frost keen rapier, a belt of incredible dexterity +2, a cloak of resistance +1, a ring of protection +1, his thieves' tools, and a sap.
Boss Wathe had a +1 breastplate, a +1 dagger, and a +1 short sword.
Faust and Ragnarök go back to the storeroom and the chest. There are no traps, and they can soon figure out how to get the chest open. Inside, they find 4,000 gold.
Meanwhile, Asteron and Za'Reed drag Boss Wathe down the stairs, out the door, and into the Market Square. They begin rounding up the townsfolk.
And the townsfolk come, looking curious and frightened all at once. The move hesitantly toward you, clearly uncertain about what to expect next. You see members of the Brookhollow clan, and Otto the half-ogre, and Chale and Madda, the weaving couple. You see Frec the barkeep, and a curvaceous, sharp-eyed woman with improbable red hair who must be Miss Sussy.
It is Miss Sussy who speaks first. "Well," she says. "I guess Boss Wathe ain't the boss anymore." She looks at you. "Which one of you is the new Boss?" She glances back at the other townsfolk, who look solemn and anxious. "And what percentage will you be taking?" she adds.

That leaves the other three items. We will see what my companions would like to keep for themselves.
It is with those thoughts that he grabbed Wathe by one foot, and drags him down the stairs and out into the street, without much care for the thug's wellbeing. Once there, the townsfolk gather and, surprise! Miss Sussy asks which one of them is the new boss, and how big his cut is going to be.
Looking at his companions first, and considering their options for a moment the towering minotaur says: "well... I guess the new boss is... you... and regarding the percentage, what about zero?"

A bit surprised at how the Townfolk are reacting to the defeated Boss Waithe Za moves forward with his hands spread out, We think the People of... Well, The Freehold or whatever you might want to call this town, should choose who is the "boss" if there even needs to be one person to control everything. No one would take a percentage of each of your earnings. Unless you decide to hold back a certain percentage from everyone to cover things for the town as a whole.

You are surprised when the townsfolk seem to expect you to replace their old Boss. You assure them that you have no such intention, and suggest that they should choose their own leadership. Some, notably Blossom Brookhollow, look pleased and excited to hear that. Most of them look confused.
"But....but how do we do that?" asks Frec the barkeep, seeming to speak for everyone.
Smith suggests that maybe the cash you found could be returned to the town, seeing as it almost certainly was taken from them. Faust advises them that some taxation is probably necessary, though not at the levels Boss Wathe demanded.

"You begin by getting together and talking about what everyone needs, and what everyone would profit from", Asteron says, "then you decide who would be the best person to get it done. If one person seems to be the best for most of what you need, or one person seems to have most of the best ideas, you put that person in charge". It seems to Asteron that the townsfolk have been following orders for so long, that they have forgotten to think for themselves.
"One question for the lot of you... is there anything that Wathe took from you that you want returned?" The outpost wants a good relationship with their neighbors, so it is just proper to ask. Once that is settled, the future of Wathe, or his lack of it, should be decided.
Hp: 41/41 AC:17/ T:13/ FF:14 CMD:19 CMB:+7 Za'Reed Tuesday November 12th, 2013 4:17:38 AM Asteron is right; and as for the first order of business that needs to be settled on is What to do with Mr. Evil Ex-Boss Waithe. Should he be hung, or sentenced to death in any other manner, for his crimes? Are there any of you who think he should be cast out into the wilds of the Thunder Lands left to fend for himself? If neither of those then Is there any other punishment you can think of that better suits him?
Just hang him and be done with it... He's been basically stealing from all of you and trying to destroy the Outpost; making multiple attempts on the lives of the ones who just saved you from him... Or am I being to cold hearted here? Za thinks what to do with Waithe is obvious, but doesn't voice his opinion out loud. It seems Waithe, or someone, has been 'thinking' for these people long enough. He doesn't want to be the one to put ideas in their heads.

Faust looks quite perplexed at how mentally damaged most of the people seem to be. "Well...since you ask I'll give some suggestions, but ultimately the decision comes from you all. Are we strong? Yes, we are. Are we good men with good intentions? Also yes. But are we from the Freehold? No."
"As such, take our suggestions with a grain of salt, we don't know the full picture, so we might suggest something that might simply not work in your reality. Still, I do have some suggestions of my own: since you just got out of a tyranical regimen, I believe it'll be better for you to have a council instead of a single ruler, three or five would be ideal, they're odd numbers, so no draws when they need to make a decision, but not too much to stall every single voting of meeting.", he takes the time to look around and see if anyone is following him at all.
"On a similar note, you might prefer to have a merit-based system of whom shall join such council, so people who contribute to the well-being of the Freehold get appointed."
"Speaking of which, a new name might be a welcome change; to really feel like it's a new leaf.", he concludes.
Now that we got some nice catching, we might start making our own items if the found ones aren't quite what we need. DM Kathy Tuesday November 12th, 2013 10:30:02 PM
You all have suggestions about what the townsfolk should do about a new government. They listen, still looking uncertain. Za'Reed points out that, in addition to figuring out how to govern themselves, they also have to figure out what to do about Former Boss Wathe.
After a few uncomfortable moments of looking at one another, Blossom Brookhollow finally speaks up. "Oh, for Alemi's sake, people, this isn't going to be that hard. We have a perfectly good lockup with two cells; we can put Bos--er, Mr. Wathe in one of them until we figure out what to do with him."
"What if he escapes?" somebody calls out.
"There should be a guard!" somebody else says. A few of the townsfolk look hopefully in your direction.
But Frec says, "Otto. Otto would make a great guard." Otto looks uncertain, but the rest of the townsfolk seem to think this is a wonderful idea. "Would you be able to stand guard?" Frec asks him.
Otto frowns. "I have a store," he says. "What if somebody wants to buy things in my store? I won't be there to sell them things."
After a brief silence, Madda says, "Chale and I are about done, anyway. How about if I watched your store for you, Otto, until the end of the day? There's only a few more hours before dinnertime."
"And I'll send over a plate of something for dinner," Blossom adds. "Well, two plates. I suppose we have to feed the prisoner, too."
Otto grins. "I will be a good guard. Thank you, Mistress Madda. Thank you, Mistress Blossom."
"After dinner," Miss Sussy says, "maybe we can all meet here in the Town Hall and figure out what to do next. Can folks spread the word to their neighbors?"

You take Mistress Brookhollow up on her offer, and follow her back to the Weary Wayfarer. Dinner is delicious. No, it is sublime. The mutton is cooked to perfection, juicy without being heavy or oily. The roast vegetables are done to a turn, flavored with savory spices that make your mouths water. There is fresh bread with fresh-churned butter, and the apple turnovers are fit for a king.
You eat your fill. Then, some of you eat a little more than your fill, because it's just that good. Once the meal is finished, Blossom and Derem Brookhollow leave to go to the town meeting, leaving eldest daughter Iris in charge. She refills your ale until you decide to retire.

In the morning, Smith goes to the outskirts of town to complete his morning rituals, then returns to swap tales of the Float with Faust.
Several of you are curious about last night's town meeting, and Blossom fills you in as she dishes up ham, porridge, fresh bread, and glasses of milk.
"Well, the main thing is the Book," she said. "That's how we're going to keep track of who gets a say-so in town affairs. Miss Sussy had a book--a very pretty thing--blank on the inside. So all the adults in town wrote their names in the Book, or had others do it for them if they didn't know their letters so well. We agreed that after new people have lived in town for six months, they can put their name in the Book if they want to. When we have to make a decision, then, all we have to do is go through the Book and ask each person."
"That took a while to work out," she continues. "Then we decided on a new name for the town. We're going to be Wardd's Freehold now, and still offer a second chance to folks who need one. We set up a schedule for guarding former Boss Wathe, until we work out what to do with him."
"That's as far as we got," she concludes. "We still have to give Wathe some kind of trial, and work out who's going to be in charge of the town. We've got another meeting scheduled for the day after tomorrow. And I want to thank you again for everything you've done. We have a real chance now, thanks to you."
You finish your breakfast and contemplate your next move. You have accomplished what you set out to do; Boss Wathe is no longer a threat. It would seem that the next step is to return to the Trading Post--unless somebody has something else to do here.

With what little Smith had to do with the whole affair, he still feels happy to have helped the citizens of Wardd's Freehold set foot on their new journey.
While spending time with the others, Smith learned of their travels from the Trading Post - he had not been there yet, and offered to travel with them at least that far. Further if it was mutually beneficial.

Yngvar can't help smiling at the announcement that Waithe would be justly tried. Bringing a criminal to justice felt good.
Cthonia is large enough for all of us. We are far enough away to not immediately impact each other, and yet close enough to support and trade with each other. To that end, I'd like to take back a few things that we don't have as readily.
We should be heading back, we've been away from our own demesne too long.

Rag nods at Yngvar's comment.
"You are right Master Yngvar... too long have we been gone from the Outpost... they have not heard from us for quite some time! It will be good to be out in the open again and on the plateau. We need to help starting up trading routes between the Post and Freehold also... "
Then the monk turns to Smith.
"Well met Master Wigglesworth. My name's Ragnarök but please do call me Rag... or Crow as some do. In search for myself I chose to walk the Wold unarmed and have vowed not to hurt any living creature... It will be good to have you accompaniing us to the Outpost... please share your tales with us as we go."

Za smiles once he hears that Wathe will be sent to trial after all... "Let's hope he'll get what he deserves... "
As it seems the group is not invited to the trial Za also agrees with Yngvar's suggestion to return home... home... oh well... the Outpost is better that out in the Jungle alone that's for sure!
He studies a couple of spells and sharpens his blade. Then he's ready to leave. The sooner the better it seems.. as the wilderness calls!

"Well, it seems that our job here is done. I am certain that there will be much rejoycing in the Outpost. Shall we begin our trek back?"
The minotaur checks his equipment, especially the straps of his armor. He gives a critical look at the edges of all his blades, just in case, an checks the string of his bow.
"When we get back I need to go to the Catacomb. Need to check on a couple of items".

@DM Kathy: how can Asteron go about joining The Club of Connoisseurs of Combat?
DM Kathy Monday November 18th, 2013 11:54:36 PM
You say your good-byes, pack your things, and leave town. What with one thing and another, you get off to rather a slow start, so by the time you are leaving town, you can see that Derem Brookhollow, with Otto's help, has already changed the sign you passed on your way into town. It now reads:
WARDD'S FREEHOLD WE DON'T WANT NO TROUBLE
Your return to the Trading Post is (relatively) uneventful, and soon all that remains is to divvy up the treasure.
[Everybody take 600 XP for this final scene. I realized that I haven't given out Hero Points in a while, so I'll be going through the archives for the next couple of days. If anybody has nominations, please email them to me. Our next module has been approved, so just let me know when you're ready to start. Jorge, I'm going to send you email to answer your question.]

Asteron says his farewells, especially to Mrs. Brookhollow. He is surely going to miss her cooking. Too bad she is not going back to the Outpost with them. Then, as they leave, he sees he new sign at the entrance of the freehold.
"They are learning quickly, don't you think? We should visit them once in a while, but something tells me they will be all right".
As they get back, he takes time every morning and evening to gather fresh food for his companions. Hard tack is edible, but mushroom stew is much better, and ripe berries are always a treat. On their trek, the barbarian wonders what kind of wine he could make from them. He would have to look into the matter, definitely.
Once they get back, report their success, and settle in, Asteron asks his companions: "so, have we decided what we keep and what we sell?"
(Ezra, the Second) Yngvar Hefnd AC 14{18}/14{18}/12{16} Mage Armor up -- CMD 13 -- HP 21/31 Tuesday November 19th, 2013 11:16:10 AM
Yngvar welcomes the return to the outpost.
Yngvar finds a quiet moment at Stark's. He settles back into his chair, his log for the last few days sitting before him, unfinished.
Stark! This mead is divine! What did Bast do to it? And Hope, I must say, that pie was something worth coming home to. I can truly say I have never had better. Yngvar surprises himself that he has started referring to the Outpost as home.
I need to travel though, it's about time I submitted my application to the Star Mage's Guild. He broods for a moment, high time I start digging into that assassin's contractor.
I've drawn up more ideas for expanding the security of the Outpost. A design welcoming to visitors, secure from the fauna.
(Sean) Toregan Dondarin AC 18/14/14 -- CMD 19 -- HP 33/38 Tuesday November 19th, 2013 2:32:41 PM Sorry about the lack of posts recently. My posting should be back to normal now, just had a few school things to do last week that messed up my posting.
Toregan bids farewell to the residents of Freehold, wishing them luck for the future. "I agree. I think they know what they want this place to be, but now they also know what they don't want it to turn into. They'll be more careful now."
Once they reach the post, Toregan joins Yngvar at Stark's, savoring whatever Bast has brewed up. "And they would be blessed to have such a skilled practitioner as yourself." Toregan toasts to Yngvar. "And I agree, a better design would be useful. I have to say, the Post does look more like a fort that a trading post. Might be good to change the look if we can keep the defenses effective. Don't forget, we also need to deal with that pass that the kobolds used to get that herd up here."
At some point after their return to Post, Toregan descends to the jungle at the base of the Plateau that Post is situated on, telling his friends not to worry and that he'd be back in a day or two. After about a day, He returns to Post, Looking no worse for wear, and with a surprising companion. One of the small raptors that had hunted the group on multiple occasions can be seen following the ranger almost as if it were a guard dog. It barely leaves his side and he seems to treat it with some affection.
(So I finally managed to get my animal companion. Velociraptor is on the core list of animal companions surprisingly, and it fits perfectly for Cthonia.)
Hp: 41/41 AC:17/ T:13/ FF:14 CMD:19 CMB:+7 Za'Reed Tuesday November 19th, 2013 5:40:05 PM
Za'reed remains quiet as the group prepares to go to the Outpost. Unlike the others he has not been at that place before... so for Za, Wardd's Freehold feel as much like home as any other new settlement out here in the Cthonian Jungle...
He's certain his friend will introduce him and Smith to the inhabitants of the Outpost but... well... one never knows.

Rag feels alive once they leave Ward's Freehold and are back in the jungle. Yes the place in dangerouq but so far it's been more due to men that it has been because of the wild fauna and flora.
"So... what plans do we have next? Any loose ends we might look into together next?"
With no clear 'group' assignement Rag's uncertain what to do next...
(Pedro) Faust Havler Tavir'e AC 17/13/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 36/37 // Wolfgang AC 18/16/14 -- CMD 13 -- HP 15/15 Tuesday November 19th, 2013 8:42:07 PM
Faust also bids farewell to the Freehold, hopeful that with Wathe gone the place will be a proper partner to the Trading Post.
Upon return he shares a warmer than usual greeting, but is otherwise too caught up in his own thoughts to properly notice what others want or are doing.
He does, however, urge to a meeting with Pen so the good news can be shared and will go to great lengths to convince him to send a proper messenger for an official agreement between both setlements; offering commercial advice on how to proceed with dealings if needed be or asked.
If the times are peaceful, uneventful and even boring, Faust will suggest to both Yngvar and Za to trade spells if either is interested in doing so.
DM Kathy Wednesday November 20th, 2013 12:35:39 AM
Your mission accomplished, you return to the Trading Post. You can't help but wonder about the future of Wardd's Freehold, and whether they will prove to be a good trading partner. Yngvar has plans for how the Post might be improved, and Faust is eager to meet with Pen to discuss a formal agreement between the town and the Post.
Pen, for his part, is all in favor. "If I write a letter to them," he asks, "who should I address it to?"
That is something of an issue; you can't tell him who's in charge over there because the townsfolk hadn't decided on anybody yet. Undaunted, Pen writes a general letter and sets it aside to send along with the next merchant caravan headed to Wardd's Freehold.
Meanwhile, Toregan leaves the Post for a day, and returns with a dinosaur companion!
[OOC: I should probably be clearer. I have the next module ready to go, but I will not start until you tell me you are ready to start. So if, for example, you still need to divide treasure and stuff like that, get it done. :)]

Smith settles into the new town fairly quickly, getting a small room at a fairly inexpensive inn. He lets the others decide how to divide things up - as long as his immediate needs are met, he doesn't push real hard for any particular treasure. If they offered something to him, he might take it. Otherwise, he spends time to getting to know the town a little bit.

After his return to the Post, Toregan shows Za'Reed and Smith around the area, introducing them to Pen, Bast, and the other residents of the Post. He also shows Smith the church and introduces him to Rexxan, his old party member and now Post's resident cleric.
As Yngvar leaves, Toregan give him a firm handshake. "Good luck on your trip. Give any dino's that cross your path a bit of hell for me, alright?"
So, I'm not sure how to calculate health for my animal compaion. Do i roll or do i take the average? Also, I am soon going to deal with the loot distribution as soon as everyone states their intentions with the rest of the loot. Should be good by the end of the week.
