We got some Goblins to hunt!

Slowly the group awakes. Some offer their prayers while then rest prepares a quick breakfast. Again Murphy asks Flim to aid taking down the tents.

"I am most certain that dealing with tents is not the proper role for a bard," Flim grumbles...

"More working...less talking," Shel mutters to Hin Billy, patting him on the back in encouragement.

Dispite his protestations Flim does help taking down the tents again..

(great postings friends - too bad there are only 6 posts and 5 players active. Also, I am rewarding Murphy a hero point for his postings for Flimsipold... I do need to know when we can expect Catalin to return... )

Once all is done Edric prepares to following Alouryn and Hazel deeper into the woods.

Wih a little blessing from Alouryn, Hazel has no difficulties to following the Goblin trail. Even Faoilnseems to have picked u the foul stench of them...

Some remains of a deserted camp give proof that Hazel is definetely on the right trail. The sun shines through the thick canopy above and is filtered through the leaves casting lovely twinkling lights all around the forest undergrowth. Vines and bushes carrying loads of berries accompany our brave Halflings as they pass...

Half a day of traveling brings the group to a swamp. Broken objects from the caravan loot are half sunk in the swamp. You even see a broken jar wih that orange goo in it...

Hazel can tell the Goblin trails leads straight through the swamp...

Eral will take up the rear of the group just in case something decides they want to come at us from behind or anyone falls into something they shouldn't "Watch your step"

Shel had learned to keep out an eye for random items of magic as she searched. While the others dug in the swamp, she used her ability to Detect Magic to see if anything in the much glowed brightly for her magical vision. "Why would the goblins have ditched all the items here? Look closely, maybe Eldon was able to leave us a clue..."

"Say, Hazel - can you tell if Eldon was walking on his own, or were the goblins carrying him, or what? Also, where all these things were spilled or dumped - any sign of a struggle here?" Following Shel's lead, Murphy himself looks about to see if he can spot anything that might tell them more about what happened here (Perception d20+11=19). He will collect anything of value.

"Hold on for a moment before we plunge ahead, friends," Murphy recommends.

He checks the ground ahead of Pippa so that she does not fall in something he is unaware of first - and has two ropes tied. 1. The lead to her halter, about fifteen feet in length. 2. The second one he rigs to go twice around her barrel over the pack strap chest pad, and one top loop to her withers and the second loop over her back. Then he coils the remaining portion so that there is about 25 feet of rope that can be tossed to someone if they start sinking in the swamp.

Murphy cuts in half a 50' length of hemp rope, then cuts eight lengths of just over three feet each. Each of these he ties in a loop at regular points along the length of a second 50' hemp rope, about every five feet. He ties a bowline at each end of the 50' rope so there is a loop of three feet circumference at head and tail.

Before they plunge ahead, he says, "My Aunt Nilli taught me swamps - the Culverwood has a few. Here are a couple of ideas to thing about.

"If you can find a walking stick - maybe four or five feet long - you can test what you're about to step in - or use it to catch your balance. If you find yourself sinking, sometimes it helps to keep it horizontal right in front of you, and that might make sure you don't sink over your head - and that way we have time to help you if needed.

"Another option - as we go through the swamp, each person who wants to can loop your hand through this," he says, holding up a section of the looped rope. "It will keep us together, and if someone sinks, the others can pull you out."

He uses his skills (Survival: d20+9=20) to help the party through the swamp (some of that as described above), and Pippa the pony, too (Handle animal: d20+6=20). And 3 Perception checks along the way: 16, 27, 18.

Oh, and by the way - the berries we passed earlier? So long as they are edible, Murphy harvests quite a bit of them - eating a few now, but saving most for later.

Once in a while when he spots an interesting plant which can be helpful to the party or good for food, he will take a bit.

Huh. Knowledge, nature 10. Not so hot.

Flim looks around at the broken, scattered items (Perception 13). He picks up a piece or two. If they don't look so interesting or useful, he will see how far he can throw them - aiming for a splash, if there's a puddle or more about.

He keeps his mandolin high up on his back, planning to keep it dry. "I didn't bring a stick." So, he'll grab on to that looped rope thing. Before they set out, he string his bow, and checks his arrows to make sure they are easy to reach.

Abit puzzled the group watches the swamp and the scattered items that appear to be left behind. Shel, Hazel and Flim take closer look From the look of it, it seems more that the Goblins threw away mainly rubbish. A broken jar with that orange goo, some pieces of wood.

The prospect of going through a swamp makes Murphy tutor the group about how to cross a swamp...

Hazel takes a closer look at the trail... he sees he Goblins took a straight pahth
through the march. However he also detects a trail a little further... this one appears to be a lot safer but will make it harder to follow the Goblins...

Taking the path through the swamp make's it easiest to follow the Goblins. You will however move at 1/2 your base speed.
Taking the harder, safer path allows you to go at 3/4 your qpeed

From the looks at the trail, it appeard Eldon walked by himself.

Eral is a little out of his comfort level in the swamp as he has never been in one so is glad to follow someone else's lead through the swamp while keeping an eye out on the rear of the group. (perception of 15)

While watching Eral will look at the orange goo to see if he can tell what it is using his knowledge of spells. (Spell Craft of 9)

"Eral - that orange paste is to mitigate the itch from the goblin dogs. It was part of the purpose of Eldon's trip."

He grabs one of the longer pieces of wood - he'll take whatever is the closest to a walking staff or walking stick.

The group briefly ponders the options to either take a safer route hoping to find the Goblin trail back later, or follow the trail of them straight through the swamp...
They quickly reach a consensus and heading is set go through the swamp.

Murphy uses a rope to ty everyone together to make sure no one gets lost. Hazel takes the lead and carefully scans the path ahead. Hazel makes sure the path does not get lost.

Every step you take makes your muscles scream. You're feet are sucked down into the wet sand... mosquito's fly abundently. The damp warm air makes it almost unbearable. Thegroup now walks at half speeds... squishing sounds accompany yoh all along the way.

Gradually you manouvre through the swamp, occasionally the Goblin trails circle around a patch of shallow water but you all are quietly alert so you don't loose their trail There's no sign yet of the ones you're chasing...

Please make perception and survival rolls...

This is awful...this is awful...this is awful!. As much as Shel tried, she wasn't able to focus on anything other than getting out of the nasty swamp. The others were more or less carrying her, as she had cleverly staked out a position toward the middle of the rope and she hung on for dear life. She was completely oblivious to her surroundings during this part of the journey.

I really do not want to be in the position of posting for people who do not post. Please, be regular in your posting. And thank you to those for whom this request is not needed.

The current schedule is DM posts Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (a few DMs go for that, rather than Monday through Friday).

Remember: 5 minutes a day, 5 posts a week. You can always feel free to spend more than 5 minutes. For the sake of your own character as well as those with whom you play, try not to spend much less than 5 minutes. Read the DM's post, those of characters who posted before you, make whatever rolls the DM requests (or you feel are appropriate), and write it up.

Secondly, the idea behind the Sunday through Thursday DM schedule is that you all have the whole Monday to Friday to make a post. If in any case someone has trouble with this please let me know.

Slowly the group makes it's way through the treacherous swamp. About half day in the afternoon Hazel calls for a halt... Ahead he finds a da?ngerous patch of quick sand and alerts his friends. With Murphy's rope harnessing the group it's easy to make sure everyone is safe.

The swamp seems to go on forever. Bogs of water , bushes and occasionally a tree is all what our halfling friends get to see. Even the singer and storyteller appear to be less creative in this somber place...
Already dusk approaches and still there is no trace of Eldon and his kidnappers...the swamp offers little to no secure plaves to spend the night.
So there realy isn't any alternative than to press on...
Please everyone make a CON check DC 10 (If the check fails, the character takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. A character who takes any nonlethal damage from a forced march becomes fatigued. )

Then finally you see the edge of the swamp... A welcoming sight if it wasn't for that knot of Giant Toads that iq blocking your way...

You all arrive fromthe South. The darker path is a safe path where you can walk at 1/2 your normal base speed. The lighter colors are mpre dangerous and allow you to love at 1/4th of your speed.
Please select a starting position. The knot of GiantToads is blockingnyour only way out.

To not know much about swamps, Shel did an admirable job of navigating rough relatively unscathed. She took her blue armband and turned it into a makeshift mask, trying to keep the nasty muck from flopping up and getting in her mouth. "Better a little protection than none, I guess."

Shel gulps and looks around at the others. "Des anyone else see those giant toads? Anyone happen to know much about them, like why they would be blocking our path?"

"These must be the toads of doom," intones the bard. "Perhaps once or twice in your life - if you make a habit of traveling through swamps - they will face you. Their purpose is to spread warts. If their foul skin brushes up against you, then in due course will you gain brown and gray warts. The colors will spread across your skin, and more warts will sprout. Your form will begin to change as you sleep each night. Your eyes will be attracted to flying insects, and your tongue will elongate, and become sticky at the tip.

"Within a week to a fortnight, you shall be be transformed into a sizable toad yourself, and feel compelled to find a swamp. There you will eat what you can find... and seek out humans and halflings that you might infect with your hideous warts, and so pass on the curse. Only after you have communicated the curse, will it be lifted from you. Over the course of a fortnight or a week, your taste for insects will decline, and your form become more like what you were born with. One day, you will find yourself fully recovered."

He considers their bulk. "If they don't decide to swallow you, instead."

Flimsipold hawks and spits. "So, don't let them rub up against you. Mind their sticky tongues, too. You don't want their toady warty curse." Flim prepares his bow, and nocks an arrow. "Let's end this cycle of curses, and take 'em down!" He fiddles with his bow for a moment. "Go ahead, I'll lead from behind," he explains as he pats his bow.

Murphy listens to Flimsipold's words of warning. He says to Hazel, "He is right - you do not want the warts to touch you. Some sort of poison, I think." [Knowledge: Nature 27] He adds, "The toads can use their tongues to drag you close to their bodies. Have a sharp knife, dagger or sword if they get close, and try to cut the tongue quickly if they grab you with it. If they..." and here he gulps, and hesitates a moment. "If they try to swallow you, stab them inside as much as you can."

"That's a good idea to hit them from afar, Hazel. I can call an small elemental to attack them. Let's concentrate our weapons on the middle one, first," (#2) he suggests, "Then then left one [#1] and finish off the one on the right [#3] last - each one down means one less that can get us. And if we spread ourselves out some, all the better.

"Unless anyone thinks of a better idea, let's get to where our spells or missiles can hit them, then start the attacks. I figure they'll come after us once we start hitting. How about we move, if we're going to, then start the attacks at the same time? Someone count to 12, then we start - all right?"

Murphy prepares to summon nature's ally, small air elemental [HP 13(2d10+2) AC 17/14/14(+3 Dex,+3 natural,+1 size) Fort +4 Ref +6 Will +0], which he will direct toward toad #2 (currently at I6,7;J6,7 when it arrives. He waits about 6 to 12 seconds to allow others to prepare - unless the toads move their direction, in which case he casts right away.

Murphy is at K27. Pippa is at K28-K29.

"These must be the toads of doom" Flimsipold muses as the group stands face to face wih the giant toads... He warns the Humble's Sword not to touch the Toads if they don't want to end up covered in warts,,,

Shel, pleased that she made it through the Swamp stands surprised... her blue makeshift mask covering her mouth that opened in surprise.

Alouryn is fatigued from the swamp exploration so she stays near the rear of the group. Murphy however takes point and summons an air element in order to help the group. Then at the sound of Flim's tune Eral and Edric prepare for battle,

So far it seems the Toads have not noticed the group. Slowly they hunt for insects, little birds and so on... of course, some in the group have the potential of being served as dinner...

DM Steven : movement in the swamp is at 1/2 of your base speed - so when running the halflings can get as far as 40 ft. This would get you close to M28 instead.

Murphy's potent summoned four-foot tall bundle of energetic air shot forward to attack the middle toad (I rolled 2 on d3, as all he could figure to communicate was to get the toads), but apparently the toad must have slightly shifted in place an instant before the small air elemental would have slammed it in a flyby attack, and all the toad feels (if it still feels anything) is a whoosh of swirling air off to its right side (attack 7 (nat 1)) in a flyby.

"Next the one on the left!" (#1) recommends Murphy. He moves forward to L25.

Odo, having brought up the rear, apparently had been focusing that direction. But with things getting lively in front of him, he redirects himself that way. He steps up next to Edric (M32) and slings a bullet at the closest toad (#1) on the left. The stone was not poorly thrown, but most of its energy was spent, and it glances off the side of the amphibian (d20+6+1+1-4=13, 14 needed). He readies another missile.

[As my post for Flim was before the DM's post, and I let you know the post would be within the hour of my notice, and I did not see our DM post before Flim's, I'm making an addition post for him following the DM post. Not doing likewise for Murphy or Odo - just Flim -Kim]

Flim figures he'll try the same thing on the left-most toad thing. He kisses his bow, aims the shaft, and lets fly. Good! He hit! Though not so spectacularly as before. Hit AC 20, 6 hp damage (forgot to include +1 from inspire courage in the die roll for damage).

Flim kisses his bow and looses a deadly arrow... Toad 2 sinks into the mud its long sticky tongue dangeling from its mouth... That's one down and three to go!


TODAY's DM POST

Shel moves into position and focusses on Toad #3 hoping to immobilize the creature... The Toad falls into a magical slumber and remains in place! The Halfling sorcerer's spell is working wonderfully and this will most certainly buy the group some time!

The Air elemental Murphy summoned makes a flyby whoosh near the toads...

Alouryn, dispite being fatigued, calls upon Flower to guide Odo's stones... the fighter of Floy barely makes it but still the stone strikes true!

Having killed the first Toad, Flim hopes to do this again and fires another arrow! The Bard sure knows how to handle his bow and once again the arrow sinks deep into the soft Toad belly... the monster squaaks in pain and teror... it's tongue flipping in and out trying to get to those pesky halflings that are hurting them..

Hazel feels all the boons from his friends emboldening him and with his sling he hurls a couple of sling bullets at Toad #1. Only one hits but still that is surprising from this distance given the long march and scouting the ranger has gone through today.

Edric moves closer with the rest of the group...

This was not supposed to happen. The warty toad was not supposed to get so close. That's what bows and arrows are for!

This toad was close. Too close. Bad breath in his face close. The warts were nearly upon him as the toad had him in its grasp - "Ay!" he exclaimed from the pain - beginning to open its mouth. Dagger! No dagger. Long sword... give it a try. With only one hand available, Flimsipold somehow manages to pull forth his sharp, slicing weapon. With a narrow range of movement, he tries to slice (AC 16, 14 or better needed). And, if that worked, the noxious croaker takes 5 hp damage.

"Croak, croaker, croak. Ouch!"

With Flim now dangling in the Toads mouth the Halflings panick and race for their Bard's aid... must be that his pleasant tunes are much appreciated... why else would one rescue a Bard?!?

Eral sprints through the muck to stand next to the Toad... shouting...

Odo throws a sling bullet from afar and hits the Toad flat in a bulging eye... the monster growls in pain it's jaws almost collapsing on Flim to literally bite him in half... Just a split second later Shel's acid burns the Toad's skinn and Murphy's elemental strike the creature in his behind... Murphy fails to strike. Hazel too indends to make frog legs for dinner tonight and bashes the thick Toad legs...

Alouryn is spiritually and metaphysically connected to Flim and can almost smell how the inside of a Giant Toad smells... Her head hurts from the gnawing jaws... But she feels there's stil life in the Bards mangled body.

Flim was caught by surpise! This was not supposed to happen... Dagger! Long Sword... ANYTHING THAT STINGS the Bard things as he perforates the Giant Toads palais...

Flim feels the jaws loosen as the creature collapses to the ground... making the mud around you all to splash up as it crashes into the stinking puddles...
Flim rolls out of the monster's jaws... safe and sound.

Now... that only leaves a sleeping toad to deal with next... Live and let live?!?

He pulls his knees almost to his chest, then lies still for a few moments. "It feels better like this. You all just go on ahead without me. I will work on my memoirs here in the swamp."

Murphy thanks the air elemental, and dismisses it. "Thanks, Alouryn, I'm fine," he answers the cleric of Flower.

"Flim - you really dive into your work, now, don't you?" Murphy asks his colorful, now bedraggled friend. He casts cure light wounds on him for 9 hp back (d20+2=20 should be d8+2=9).

"We need to get you cleaned up. You all right with us sneaking past the one that's sleeping? I'm thinkin' that's the way to go, myself."

He works his way back to where he left his pony, Pippa, and urges her forward. She seems fine with things (handle animal 21). He gets her back to O20-21, with himself at O19. He is ready to send lightning against the sleeping toad should it awaken, but otherwise intends to move as quietly as is practicable with the party to the left side of the beast.

Odo thinks about what just happened. What if there had been more toads? If the skin makes you turn into a toad, like Flim said, what does being in its mouth do? Is Flim going to turn into a toad now?

"I think we should get Flim back to town. I'm afraid he might have the curse of the toads of doom, being in its mouth and all. Maybe that LaRue lady can help him, or one of the 2nd Lunch Club. Dinner Club? Whatever. Thing is, I don't see that waitin' around for Flim to turn into a toad while we're trying to rescue Eldon is such a good idea."

As Flimsipold falls from the Toad's mouth he retreats into himself... scared perhaps... Odo too is concerned for his Bard friend and favours bringing the poor lad home. He's no use to drag along if he's too affraid to continue. After all... no one else among you has ever seen the inside of a Toad! At least not a live one!!

Though sad you are to let two good companions go you all realise that the rescue of Eldon can not be further postponed... Odo and Flim are convinced they can work their way back to the road and return home... seems like their adventuring days have come to a pauze.

Shel, Hazel, Alouryn wonder if the sleeping Toad should be given the Coup the Grace. Shel hates killing helpless things but considers the Toads evil enough to protect future travellers against it. Alouryn favours not to harm the creature. After all... weren't you invading their home?!? Though disgusting it may be but this swamp was the Toad Knot's home! Perhaps they were just protecting it against you...

And so the party of 8 is reduced to 6...

Flimsipold 'Hin Billy' Williewhim and Odo Barfoot decide to turn around and go home.

Alouryn, Hazel, Shel, Murphy, Eral and Edric will push forward and see to the rescue of Eldon Tosscobble. A daring journey that you can't yet see the end of... there has been no sign of the Goblin warriors yet... but you know they are somewhere up ahead. Now you're out of the Swamp the forest in front of you looms in shadows. The sky is slowly darkening as evening falls. Perhaps it would be good to find a safe spot and camp for the night. After all it has been an exiting day.

Flim and Odo will spend the night with you all to rest and will go home at first light of day...


(OOC - ADM Kim and myself talked about writing Flim and Odo out of the adventure. Though I hate to let them go I think we can safely say that Kim has done all he could to keep both Catalin and Matthew in the game. If they return, they are welcome to come back to the group (with certain agreements though).

"So, we'll rest up with you - heaven knows we all need some rest after that journey through the swamp, and you all go on and get Eldon back for his Cora, and Flimsipold and I will go make sure he does not fall under the curse of the Toads of Doom."

He pulls out the magical dagger, cocks his arm, and throws it. The point sinks a ways into a nearby tree (AC 22 4 hp dam). "One of you use this to help rescue Mister Tosscobble. That will be my offer to the effort, since I can't be there myself."

In the morning he helps out around the campsite, eats a hearty breakfast, then gets ready to leave as soon as Flim is up to it. Before parting ways, he shakes the hand of each of his friends. He shyly asks Shel and Alouryn if he can give each of them a hug. If they allow such, his hugs are ginger and light, so as not to be too forward.

By the time they reach the camp, Flim is feeling somewhat better. He does ask if someone can give him a 'little nip of healing' before they bed down for the night.

He cleans himself and his gear. In the evening he plays some songs for his friends. "Bring Eldon and yourselves back in one piece. Well, one piece each. Not all globbed together. Then someone come and tell me the rest of the story, and I'll write a song."

Flim takes Hazel aside for a few minutes. "Hey. I don't know what all happened during that toad thing. But all of a sudden, just as the toad started trying to swallow me, I started thinking about Alouryn. Not Mulberry. Alouryn. It was like I felt this tight connection, as though she was right there with me - despite all the spit and bad toad breath, y'know? Now, at the same time I was thinkin', 'Hey, this isn't right. She's Hazel's girl, not mine.' But I couldn't shake thinking about her for a while. Well, all I've gotta say is, you have one fine friend there. And I really didn't mean anything by it. You know my heart's for Mulberry. But I had to let you know. You're not gonna hit me now, are you?"

In the morning he asks everyone to get in a circle. Then he teaches them a little dance, in which people weave in and out of each other, and kick in the air, and stomp, and clap, and turn in circles. Then he says. "That's what life is all about. We weave in and out of people's lives. We do things with this one, with that one. We come close, we move on. Sometimes we come close again. Who knows?"

He says goodbye to Edric and Eral and Shel and Murphy and Alouryn and Hazel. "C'mon, Odo, let's get this show on the road."

Murphy takes the usual precautions at night - setting up silken trip wires, also digging a waste hole a ways from the camp site, then covering it back over before they leave.

He spends time with Odo and Flim. "Flim, I don't think you have any toad curse on you. I suppose it doesn't hurt to find out for sure, though."

"It's just been a few days we've been doing things together. Hope we can do some more. See you in a bit, I trust."

In the aftermath of the Toad battle the Halflings find a safe place to camp for the night. Flimsipold feels somewhat better. He struggles with thoughts about Alouryn and confesses them to Hazel. Murphy takes care of the evening routine by protecting the campsite with his tripwires.

The next morning the group takes breakfast all together. Odo's dagger sticks in a nearby tree for one of the six remaining brave ones to wield...
The group says goodbye one by one to Odo and Flim. They decided to return home and inform Cora and Lilly and Bingo -who should be back home by now -of their endeavours... after all they have not heard from the Halflings since they left Bingo. Who knows... Lilly might deliver soon!

Shell, Alouryn, Hazel, Murphy, Edric and Eral watch Odo and Flim as they leave the campsite to return home...

Then the group turns to face the woods and planes that lay ahead. Hazel and Faoil check for tracks and quickly find trace of the Goblin group.
So the group begins following the tracks once again, Though only 6 they uphold their spirit to free Eldon.

Back into action folks. I need walking order and appropriate rolls for travelling through dangerous woods...

Shel hugs both travelers before they return to the village. She waves goodbye as they disappear back through the swamp.

She was still distracted when they set back out on their journey, and see did not pay any particular attention to the group's surroundings. Many of their friends had left...for the time she was sulking and simply going through the motions.

How about side by side marching order? Three columns of two. Shel would be better in the middle or the back.

Hazel discovers himself grabbing strongly his sling staff at Flim confession. But then he sees into his eyes, and smiles.
"She is a wonderful girl. Really magical. I am very lucky to have meet her. I can't blame anyone to feel in love with her."
And then he points a finger at the bard:
"But I saw her first! I made you a deal, I'll leave Mulberry all for you, and you leave Alouryn all for me. Deal?"
After that they embrace and share a bonding moment, a couple of young halflings in love (just not with each other :P )

Alouryn will likely be just behind Hazel so she can talk with him casually while he is not too busy tracking the goblins. While Hazel and Faoil are scouting ahead she will tell the group stories about Flower and the history of Humble's Ford to try to make up for not having a bard, but she's still new to story telling and makes a lot of mistakes. (Perform oratory 9) Still it helps to pass the time for the group.

Since Murphy pulling Pippa take up about twelve to fifteen feet, Murphy will be happy to be in the second and Pippa in the 3rd and 4th rows, with Faoil and Hazel out front, Alouryn next to Murph, and... - how do others want to be arrayed? If someone else wants to be ahead of Murphy, that's also fine with him, and he can be in the 3rd row, and Pippa behind him. Eral, Edrik - where do you prefer? Shel - behind Alouryn, or one of the guys, next to Pippa?

Aside from marching order, Murphy is just not his usual perceptive self (12, natural 1). However, he does a perfect job of leading Pippa along the way (handle animal 26, natural 20).

Post more than once if need be so we can sort out the marching order.

With Odo and Flim now gone the 6 remaining brave adventurers push forward through woods and plains in search for Eldon. Hazel has no trouble in following the Goblin tracks. It's clear they are not concerned about being followed.

Hazel leads the party. Alouryn claims the second row and has Edric to walk next to her. Murphy, pulling Pippa, is pushed to thrid row with Shel at his side. Eral walks next to Pippa occasionally patting the pony at her flanks.

And so the journey continues... fatigue is gone thanks to a good night sleep. The dirt and mud from the Swamp dried up... it does stink however which somehow is annoying.

The day slowly passes... the sun goes to it's highest peak shining brightly on the lands before. When in the woods, the light is filtered through the overhanging canopy casting lovely twinkling lights on the forest undergrowth. It's warm but not too warm... just perfect for a good strong walk. If only they would not be out hunting Goblins it could perhaps be a perfect day for a picknick...

Hazel only : Highlight to display spoiler: { You hear growling... no one of your companions seem to have noticed! Faoil barks and growls too as he must have caught scent of something!... running paws... left of you... right also!! ... 2 maybe 3 canines... with everyone else oblivious to what is approaching you are the only one able to warn your friends!! }

Murphy notices Pippa's fear, looks to see if her alarm is focused on any particular direction.

Now that Hazel as well has pointed out that there are wolves surrounding us, Murphy attends (Perception 32). If he can see or hear the general area the animals are coming from, the casts entangle so that the near edge is a few feet to the side of the party, the far edge of the growing circle about forty feet from the near edge.

[This will not be a random, wild casting - Murphy gets a clue before he casts, and tries to place it as effectively as possible - that perception roll should help.]

Eral notices how Pippa seems to be frightened but Murphy's soothing words keep the pony in check... Still, something did scare her so Eral checks with Hazel for answers...The ranger warns fis companions of the presence of 2 or 3 canines...When Alouryn asks if they are hostile, Hazel calmly adds that he figures they are hunting you all...

Now that everyone knows there is a pack of wolflike canines surrounding you" you start looking more closely...
Murphy suddenly spots a goblin dog running parallet along the road. He casts Entaglement hoping to trap the canine...(One is most certainly caught in the grappeling vines)

The other two jump from the forest edge an...

Goblin dog 1 is stuck in the vines
Goblin dog 2 jumps up from the vines and attack Pippa! (hits AC12 - damage 8 + alleric reaction ) have a skin rash)
Gonlblin dog 3 attacks Edric - hitAC 13

A knowledge nature check DC 15 will reveal that the jar with the orange cream will probably protect you from the Goblin dog rash...

Pippa, feeling the bite of the goblin dog, tries to kick it away, but misses utterly (Hit AC 3 - should have been d20+1, not +4). She once kicked a dog who nipped at her, and knocked it back a ways, but that was more luck than anything. The wound irks her terribly.

Murphy takes the tanglefoot bag he carries and sends it in the dog's direction. It does not hit so solidly (ranged touch attack AC 11), however. [If that somehow did hit, then roll saving throw DC 15. An entangled creature takes a --2 penalty on attack rolls and a --4 penalty to Dexterity and must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be glued to the floor, unable to move. Even on a successful save, it can move only at half speed.]

"Goblin Dogs! Get them!"

Dispite Hazel's warning, Shel is surprised when the Goblin Dog suddenly jumps out of the woods and attempts to bite Edric... however the Halfling Sorcerer is able to keep her wit in front of the fierce looking canine... The cone of dashing colors springing forth from Shel's hand causes the Dog to fall unconscious in front of Edric's feet!

Eral sees how the Goblin Dog's fangs bite deep into the hind quarter of Pippa... the Pony rears in panick towering high above the Halflings beside her. A little intimidated by the Dog and panicking Pony, Eral tries to swing his warhammer but misses badly...

(OOC DM Steven : I made a minor map correction. Murphy stated that the edge of the entangle as supposed to be 'a few feet away from the group'. I places it right next to you - as this would leave no space for Hazel to perform his action to save Pippa I have pushed the Entangle 5 feet further to the left)

Hazel wants to save Pippa from the Goblin Dog and charges into Goblin Dog #2. However his bold move made his aim pretty lousy...

Alouryn helps her friends by casting a Bless spell on the party. (Everyone get a +1 to your attacks - don't forget to add it folks ;-) )

As the bite of the Dog draws blood Pippa rears and tries to kick the Dog away... however her feet go wild and fail to wask the beast...
The Tanglefoot Bag Murphy throws also fails to glue the roaring beast to the ground. It would have made a mess of the Dog's dander filled fur...

Just as the Dog goes limp in front of Edric, he levels a mighty swing of his axe towards the Goblin Dog that tried to bite him earlier... his axe leaves a deep wound in the Dog's flank. But he's allready unconscious from the Color Spray so he doesn't realy notice what is going on anymore... on the other hand... he'll have a bad headache when he wakes up in a couple of turns...

Goblin Dog#1 slowly makes it out of the Entangling vines and throws himself into Alouryn... it's fangs clapping together as it just misses Alouryn's arm.

Goblin Dog#2 now stands before Hazel, Eral of course Pippa... Neither Hazel nor Eral succeeded to harm the Dog... the Pony is the largest of the three so in the Dog's primitive mind the most threatening and it did already tasts the Pony's warm succulent blood... So once again the Dog attacks Pippa bringing the Pony to the brink of Death... (I think Pippa - if it's a standard Horse/Pony has 13HP so this attack brings Pippa to 0 HP)

As Pippa falls to the ground, the Goblin Dog makes a 5ft step backward seeing who he will attack next...

Goblin Dog#3 is dreaming of stars... wide fields of green with little rabbits... a lush stream with cool water... it would be wonderful if only he wouldn't feel this annoying stinging feeling in his side.

Eral steps out of the front line to catch the attention of Goblin Dog #2. Once again he swings his warhammer and this time he knocks out a couple of teeth from the Dog's mouth... The beast yelps in pain... shakes its head and then... growls in anger...

Hazel notices Pippa drop but is mostly concerned with the Goblin Dog attacking Alouryn... He sends Faoil to her rescue! The Riding Dog is pretty fierce and bites down deep in the neck of the Goblin Dog... The Goblin Dog whines but isn't tripped. Hazel turns around as well and rams his Sling Staff into the flank of the Goblin Dog... The hounds goes limp due to the deadly duo!! The Ranger has saved his bonny lass...

Shel ignores the unconscious Dog in front if her and uses some minor magics so fire a small burst of acid at the beast...

"Oh Pippa!"

Murphy finishes of the Goblin Dog in all his fury for what the beast did to his beloved family Pony... Goblin Dog #2 also falls dead on the ground...

"Sleep well, Beast!" Edric shouts as he lifts his axe above his head and brings it down of Goblin Dog #3's neck, delivering the Coup de Grace...

...

and suddenly the forest falls silent...

Pippa lies dead on the ground in a pool of blood... Faoil howls softly as he approaches the fallen Pony. Murphy kneels next to Pippa placing his hand upon her... the light in her eyes has faded and now have a pale stare...

[Uh, I thought critters died dead a wee bit after reaching zero hp, as it was my plan to cast cure light wounds with this post. Keep in mind 6 seconds have passed since the dog dropped her to zero, so within 12 seconds of reaching zero the CLW would go into full effect. So that's what I'm doing.]

Murphy casts cure light wounds upon Pippa for [3 or 9 hp healing - it has been the custom to re-roll CLW if a 1 were rolled - so, unless that custom has changed - it should be 9].

"C'mon, girl, stay with us." He follows up the healing spell by taking some of the orange cream from one of the jars and rubbbing it over the two places the dog bit her.

Murphy does all he can to save Pippa... he frantically starts rubbing the paste on the pony's wounds hoping it will help her recovering.

"C'mon, girl, stay with us."

Shel, Hazel, Eral and Edric stand aside and are awaiting for a reaction from Murphy... already some fear the worst...

Murphy asks Alouryn to call on the Flower...

Seconds pass. Pippa's side is bright orange from applying the paste... the healing magic rushes through the loyal animal's bruised and battered body...

Suddenly Pippa's legs twitch... she stamps her rear legs... a shudder runs through her spine... then she opens her eyes. Eyes that show life in them!!

Murphy emits a sigh of releaf as slowly Pippa regains consciousness. Slowly the large gaping wounds close leaving a large ugly scar... a scar that will never go away. A sad sign of a brutal fight...

Now... did anyone plan to go rescue Eldon or will you keep playing in the woods?!?

As beloved Pippa comes around, Murphy is elated. "Good girl. Good girl! Knew you weren't gonna leave us. Good girl, Pippa." He gets some food for her, and water. He appreciates his friends, and gives nods of thanks for their encouragement.

Then Alouryn sends massive waves of good energy over the group. Murphy feels it washing over him, and sees Pippa perk up even more.

"Whoa. Wow. Thank you, Alouryn." He looks up, "And thank you, Flower." He then sees a glow about the freckled ginger beauty. "What is happening?" He glances over at Hazel's face, as well as the others'. The normally talkative druid finds himself speechless, astonished at this... transfiguration? Disappearance into glory?

Shaken at her disappearance, Murphy still does not know what to think. He makes sure that Pippa is fine, and calm now (handle animal 12), but then he looks around the area where Alouryn was standing. It's as though he is blind, though, as he really cannot discern how she went away like that (perception 12 - nat 1).

If all agree they need to get going, however, he will do so. He is still so wrapped up in the near loss of his pony, and Alouryn's glorious departure, that he really cannot focus for a while on what is happening around him (again, perception 12 - nat 1).

After Alouryn's weird phasing in and out of the Wold everyone stands staring ateach other for a second. Alouryn is amased by the powers Flower holds... Hazel, feeling almost completely lost, falls into her arms hoping she will never vanish again...

Looking at the mess the battle left, Murphy pulls a few tools from one of the packs on Pippa's back. He takes two miner's picks. "Want to do a little clean-up," he explains. "If anyone wants to help, I won't object." The druid explains he wants to pull the carcasses of the goblin dogs a ways off the path, and to place them side by side. He takes care not to touch the body of the dog itself with hands or clothing, rather letting the end of the pick do the grabbing of the body, and hanging on to the handle of the pick to do the pulling.

As he works, he explains, "Edric was in last year's Crescent Valley Games. His team was doing quite well, making the final three. However, the Bad Apples pulled a fast one, outside the boundaries of the rules, eliminating his team. Not the only time they cheated last year, and it took a while to confirm that one."

Once the foul beasts' bodies are laid in parallel array well off the pathway, he well cleans off the pickhead in dirt and grass, and recommends the same be done by whoever uses the other pick..

"I've got a few more stories about our cousin, but maybe you want to tell your own, Adomorn," Murphy says as he cleans his hands on fresh grass, and restows the picks.

"I agree with Edric. Let's get going."

As the group gets introduced to one another it turns out our newest friend isn't a complete stranger! One by one they introduce themselves while Murphy decides to clean the tracks before going after the Goblins and Eldon. The good news anyhow is that Eldon appears to be still alive!

Question is... how long still...

Adomorn has laid eyes on the Goblins and their Dogs and more or less knows where they went. Dispite the fact that untill now Hazel has had little trouble following the Goblin trail it's still easier to have someone in the group who actually knows where the went!

"Let's follow that trail." Edric urges and most tend to agree.

...

It will take more time to get to know each other well... more time they will probably have later but now... they need to get after Eldon! His wife is counting on you all and... well you just don't want to dissapoint her.

Hazel and Faoil show the tracks... Adomorn nods... and then the both of them begin guiding the group further along the path.


Please tell me your new group positions - you can still walk with two side by side if you want.
And... you'd better make some appropriate rolls my friends... as Adomorn informed you, you are but a few hours behind them Goblins...

Murphy is fine with keeping the same position he had before, unless someone wants to suggest a different order. He catches up on news with Adomorn as they go along - if he is close enough to talk, at least for the first hour of travel. "How go things at your family's mill? And your eldest brother, how is he?"

He grows quieter after a while, wanting to remain alert and not give away their position unnecessarily.

The Humble's Sword more or less uses the same marching order as they once again go in pursuit of the Goblins they are after... Hazel and Faoil take the lead. Adomorn offered to help him but even without help of the newcommer the ranger and his loyal companion hardly have any problems following the tracks they left. Clearly they are not expecting anyone to be hunting them for they are hardly trying to conceal their tracks...

For some time the Halfling chat about various little things but after an hour or so they realise this trip isn't a picknick.
Gradually the flore has changed from lush undergrowth and deciduous trees to pines and brambles. Here and there you find some tasty looking berries but again... this isn't just a pleasure trip.

Up ahead the brambles look lot thicker... the path no longer allows you to walk side by side...

Change marching order if needed and hmm... you may want to roll some chekcs. Perception sounds easy but you may want to try a few more hunting checkq :-)

Murphy initially is absorbed in thought about Adomorn, last year's games, Cora's anxiety (perception 12 - nat 1). The training in wilderness survival his Aunt Nilli gave him, though, along with living for a time in different parts of the Culverwood stand him in good stead (survival 28). His attententiveness improves significantly a bit later (perception 21). Walking through the brambles, his survival instincts peak (survival 29 - nat 20). He remembers chasing rabbits through the brambles on the edge of the clearing about half a mile from Nilli's place. "The trick is to change your flow of movement to match and counter the grab of the vines."

Pippa is doing fine, so far (handle animal 22). She and Murphy are about halfway back in the group as they thread their way through the grasping plants. He think it would be nice to have that entangle spell again. He takes a tanglefoot bag down to replace the one he tossed earlier. The bag of caltrops is along one side of the pack, the bag resting against the leather so as not to irritate the good pony.

One more thing. The berries. Whenever they pass by a good bunch, he grabs a handful or two, and puts most of them into a bag. Unless there are different types of berries, in which case he puts them into separate bags. How can a druid pass up perfectly good berries?

Losing sight of Hazel, Alouryn starts paying closer attention to her surroundings especially the brambles as she follows Shel through the thicket. She took some gardening classes when studying to be a Devotee of Flower at the Centre for Enlightenment which gives her some insight into these particular plants. She pauses her conversation with Shel to listen closely for danger. She her whip coiled around one arm to push aside the brambles and her other hand on her holy symbol. She is ready to cast light if it gets to hard to see.

Adomorn decides to get in the middle of the pack and the path starts to narrow. With Murphy bringing up the games last year, the memories fill his head to pass the time marching on the trail.

Steadily the group trots along the Goblin trail. Being slightly ahead of the group allows Hazel and Faoil to concentrate on the job at hand... the rest of the group appears to be somewhat distracted... Shel and Alouryn keep whispering among the two.Eral and Edric both try hard to stay focussed by the ladies shatter makes that near to impossible...
Murphy lead Pipa. So far the Pony has behaved nicely. As he passes a some brambles he collects a handful of tasty looking berries. Adomorn rries to fit in but his mind also is a bit distracted...

"Be careful here!" Hazel sneers to his friends hoping they will shut up...

Then suddenly Hazel, Faoil and Alouryn hear a twig snap...through the briars you can perceive a Goblin sentry... Hazel keeps focussing and is able to spot the Goblin sentry...

Goblin Lair Encounter

- you can cross the briars at 5ft per movement phase. A double move allows you to cross 10ft per turns. If you make a succesful climb check DC12 you can cross 10ft per movement.
- the sentry is approx 160ft away from the lair
- Pipa will need serious persuasion to go through the briars.
- shooting through the briars will increase AC with 2 per 5 ft of briars
- there's a track that leads south which will allow you to enter the clearing without going through the briars
- stealth is by -4 when going through the briars
- you can see the lair entrance on the right


It now is entirely up to the Humble's sword to decide how to proceed...

Shel holds tight in her position. She turns to whisper to the others. "I think we need to take the long way around, don't we? It'll take forever for us to cut through those brambles. Even if they hear us on the path, we might be able to position ourself, so that we can limit the number of them that can get to us with the same briars."

OOC: EVERYONE - please read carefully

"Hush, don't rush, Hazel," Murphy whispers urgently. "A dog's bark does not mean panic is needed. There are goblin dogs about, too, you know. Calm. Stop." Murphy activates his message device, and hones it in on Hazel and Shel, so they can whisper back and forth as need be to communicate with each other at a distance. He grabs a big bag of caltrops and gives it to Hazel. "Most everyone, go on trail - hustle. If you know goblin, talk about toads, complain and swear. Hazel, you and Faoil can go through brush, and make as much noise as you want - in goblin - tell the sodbaubau you will kill it for going through the brush. Scatter the caltrops from this bag in front of the doors in the rock - if you want to, when you can."

Then he calls out in the goblin tongue in an alto voice. Brraekas, sodbaubau. Porr'gek djumee. Goblin translation: Highlight to display spoiler: {Shut up, bitch-dog. Home is near.}

He tries to pull Pippa forward, but she will not budge [handle animal 7 - great timing]. He drops the lead rope. (If someone else wants to pick up the lead rope and try to move Pippa forward, perhaps they will have better luck.)

He modulates his voice to a low tenor to make it seem like another person, and says, Gei bu prroff, lakshakh fsekh. Psledni chelo tam, gei buut'hak kpalop. Kha-kha-khai! Vyechrrom asadem neineichik - ksas roeman! Goblin translation: Highlight to display spoiler: { I run fast, beat you all. Last person there, I beat with this stick! Ha-ha-ha! Tonight we roast pony - maybe halfling! Our people glad see us bring this news!}

Murphy runs down the trail as fast as his legs will carry him, using a string of goblin invective. He also says in goblin, "They be happy see us. Guard - come see what we brought! Help us carry, or you get none!"

Murphy spent a great deal of time growing up in the company of the only goblin he knows of who lives in Crescent Valley, as well as learning more about the goblin tongue from his brother, Kendry. The first time Kendry gave him a lesson in goblin, he punched Murphy in the throat - the first time his older brother had ever struck him enough to hurt.

As Murphy choked and gagged, Kendry explained in halfling that frequently punching each other is a common part of goblin communication. Bobbles, the goblin, said that was true, which is why he likes halflings who do not hit him.

OOC: Just checking... Hazel is riding Faoil. Faoil is faster (twice actually) than the Halflings. Faoil can move and Hazel can act after Faoil moves (the beauty of riding combat).
I am wrong in something?

Alouryn tries to quietly move down the trail but she moves too quickly to be quiet: she doubles moves to Q4. Trying too hard to avoid ripping her robes with the bramble she is snapping twigs with each stride.

Right, that first roll was a 26 on stealth. He worked on keeping stealthy until breaking out in the full-voiced goblin tongue.
Murphy: Bluff:16 (gave a circumstantial +2, because Murphy started learning goblin about 6-7 years ago, knows several people who speak it, including a goblin and a very bright half-ogre/half-ogre mage bard, and the goblin sentry cannot see that he does not look like a goblin).
Pippa: Stealth: 4 (not a clue as to whether a pony gets any adjustments on stealth checks) - but Murphy mentioned the pony in his goblin discourse, so that's fine if the sentry can hear her.

By the way, if you can change above:

[Adomorn - you get a +4 for stealth, so rolled a 20 - but at this point, don't worry about trying to be stealthy - unless you want to crawl through the brambles - in which case your two rolls apply, and, with the -4 adjustment, your rolls make 16 and 18. Your character can speak goblin - so feel free to make a comment in goblin, if you wish.]

[Eral - you can move now! With due haste - no worries about stealth. As Murphy recommended, "Most everyone, go on trail - hustle." Good job on taking over Pippa's lead rope and getting her to move.]
