The Plot Thickens
The First Assignment

Last Call... Not Quite -- DM Zach
Monday November 25th, 2013 6:17:53 PM

The guard that Nikolai chooses to accost does not take it very well. Maybe it is Nikolai's tone, or his question, or maybe the guard hates his job, but either way he is far from nice to Nikolai. He does sort of answer the question though. "Free time? Get a load of this greenhorn. The Fist is always vigilant, even and old geezer like me. There those who need to teleport know how to. For everyone else... well... let'em try. Go ahead... try it." The old guard laughs a very throaty, gravelly laugh that soon turns into a cough. You realize he probably hates you because he misses the days when he was able to go out on assignment instead of being put here because his worth to the Fist is greatly diminished because of reduced health.

Having found a very efficient way to deal with the rat infestation, the majority of the Double-Fist spend the evening drinking and having a good time with their friends. There are a few people around but the bar is mostly empty.

The next morning, well before sunrise, there is knock on the door to the quarters. Within moments both Sergeants' Trimmack and Helmbane are dressed in their full battle regalia. Trimmack speaks first. "Alright, this is it. We have our first assignment as a Double-Fist. Get dressed, full battle uniforms. Everything you need to travel. Me at the Duty Shop in 20 minutes and I'll go over all the details." With that both Sergeants leave. You realize how deadly both of your Sergeants appear. Trimmack looks as if he has 12 different plans to kill everyone he meets while Helmbane seems to have at least that many weapons and wouldn't need a single of them to accomplish the same task.

" See, the bird knows what we mean. There's a whole mess of things that nest COULD mean. Or it might just be a nest of run of the mill rats that had several dead rats in there with them as food. I prefer some kind of conspiracy theory. It helps me not sleep at night from the paranoia."

OOC
I'll make the changes to my character sheet soon, tonight if I can without any interruptions. When next you meet Cameron he will be a Ranger Bard 1/1. The changes to his story are minor. Instead of learning the paladin ways of his uncle, he got more into tracking down folks that he wanted to find. Since he has no defined idea of who might have taken his parents and thus no way to train against them he will take a racial enemy of the Scab Dwarves, Giants. Besides, being stealthy and crafty he was able to leave the dwarves behind when he wanted to be alone and not die in the process this way.

"Well, the rats are no longer our worry, at least until someone says they are. Don't let the distraction draw your attention away from life or death issues that I expect will soon be our new most important mission.
Now, make sure you leave nothing behind, I expect these quarters will be reassigned just about the time our butts are out the front gate."

Carver takes his own advice and makes sure he has everything packed up. He dons his armor and sets his weap0ns where they're comfortable and both his saddle bags and backpack are packed, not quite full, but with everything he owns.....

He chivy those who look a bit slow and double checks the barracks once everyone is out, trusting his speed to let him keep up.

Cameron grabs his gear and dons his weapons and armor. A good day to set out he figures, being cooped up here was getting old. No one much to talk to and training being just that, training. He wanted to go see someplace new and maybe meet some new people. He rushes to the mess hall to grab some breakfast and packs some fruit, bread and cheese for later. He asks the staff what the Qualtmie, Quarternaster likes to drink early in the morning and on their advice brings a cup along to surprise her when they all meet up there.

William nods as it seems they have a challenge coming their way, and he joins the others in hurriedly gathering all he needs for combat or travel... His mood is sobered by their sergeants attire, so he joins Carver and Cameron in grabbing a quick bite to eat... He doesn't say much while doing so, as he's the quiet type... He'd rather observe others rather than step right in while Cameron is quizzing others..

Finally, he makes sure he gets to the duty station a few minutes early, so as to not risk being late...

Nikolai leaves his corner of the barracks as clean and neat as can be. With few personal items, that isn't hard to do. With is backpack packed, uniform on with his bandolier of Shuriken and his other weapons about himself, he joins his friends for a quick breakfast then heads to the Duty Shop.

This was it, then. No more games. The real stuff now. Somehow he seemed he had just lost something.

Since they have 20 minutes, instead of 15, Pru takes a chance and dashes to grab a roll and some fruit, which she munches while packing. She gets her gear together, then makes her bunk and makes sure she is leaving her area tidy before grabbing her pack and her weapons.

The sergeants looked formidable, and so do many of her fist-mates. Pru does not. She wears no armor, and the tunic of her battle uniform--like that of her dress uniform--is as long as the regulations allow. It flaps around her as she walks. She puffs a little under the weight of her pack. And although she's less awkward with her weapons than when she first joined the Fist, she does not look as if she knows a dozen different ways of dispatching her foe. Or, for that matter, even one.

However, her boots are very shiny, which ought to count for something.

Bliss snaps to attention when Trimmack and Helmbane give the order.

As soon as the order is given to prepare, Bliss gathers all his gear and reduces down to one ft 5 inches. He (literally) hops to it and travels with his friends to the Duty Shop.

"This is it," he says excitedly.

Mookie, following behind, snorts.

OOC to DMs: Have casters had enough time to rest for spell recovery? Certainly, 20 minutes is not enough time for clerics and wizards to prep spells. They need an hour, right? Fortunately, as a spontaneous caster, Bliss has no worries on that score, if he has had enough rest. Also, Whatever is the Duty Shop?

DM Ian Spellcasters have had enough time to recover spells, but not prepare them. The Duty Shop is where the Quartermaster works, also called the Supply Shop, Supply Room, etc.

A Real Assignment -- DM Zach
Tuesday November 26th, 2013 5:23:43 PM

The group grabs breakfast on the go and even has the forethought to get Q her favorite Tava Root Coffee with three sugar cubes. She is happy to receive it and seems almost giddy.

The Sergeants arrive moments later, still looking as dangerous as ever.

Trimmack and Helmbane eye each other almost as if trying to determine who will be the first to speak. Helmbane motions his hands to Trimmack deferring to his seniority.

Trimmack exhales deeply before beginning. "We have our first assignment. I know you will all take it seriously anyway, but this one has some... added pressure. You see, normally an assignment comes from a Briefing Officer, typically a Lieutenant, but sometimes a Captain. This came from the Field Marshall himself. Yes... the Field Marshall." Trimmack gives a few moments to let this set in before continuing.

"Our mission is to head north about 3 days travel to the small town of Cheerful Stay, locate a stolen magic item, and return it to the Citadel so that it may given to the client."

"We have also been given a gold advance to purchase items. Each of you receive 400 gold that you may keep, or spend here at the Duty Shop."

Helmbane interjects. "Time is of the essence, the Field Marshall stressed this. We need to be there and back with that item as soon as possible. Buy what you need and then let us be on our way."

The Sergeants began double checking their packs and go to buy a few items they need for the road.

As they do, the Fist with the Minotaur Sergeant walks up to the duty shop. The Minotaur Sergeant can be heard bellowing to Trimmack and Helmbane, "My Fist has already completed their first assignment. We lost no one got 7 kills. Already have our second assignment too. You may have the Honor Fist, but I have the Fist that knows how to get things done."

Each of the other fist has quite a sack of gold and are spending it on weapon upgrades mostly. They do look like an efficient group of killers. The minotaur fist member says, "Yep, about to head back out on a mission to the north and..." He gets cut very short by a swift punch in the back of the head from his Minotaur Sergeant. "NEVER, EVER, share details of your mission with anyone outside your fist... even other Mailed Fist members!" With that, things calm back down.

OOC: I apologize for late posts... I am unable to post from work. Also, please note you can make any purchases here at the Duty Shop as opposed to the Catacombs.

Cameron bristles at the Minotaur's cool assumption that they are superior, but the Sergeant has good advice. Never share operational information outside your Fists. He throws a glance at his fist mates and motions with his head towards the door. Provided the double fist steps outside Cameron asks the sergeants a few questions. He needs to know more about the job before plucking the gold from the other Ffist's pockets.
" OK, these guys are way too full of themselves. Body count and no wounded aren't the only hallmarks of a good operation. We are apparently handling a high profile client here. Do we know what was stolen? By whom? Is this going to be a stealth mission or an assault? Was a ransom demand made? Will the client pay the ransom? I doubt that since he hired us to retrieve the item. I need something we can accomplish that they can't to toss in there and make a wager with. I know you sergeants want to wipe that smug smile off of his face, and I don't want to be looked down on for the rest of my career. Yes, I realize the irony of that statement, but you all feel it too. Give me some ammo and I'll find a way to get their respect, or at least their pay."

I imagine they could BULL their way through it, but if that's what was required, they would be doing the job, not us.
While you may think everything is a contest, the ultimate prize is remaining alive, not getting gold. I admit gold is good, very good, but wagering our lives against it, is not something I really want to be a part of."

Carver says all that, especially the "BULL" part where he can easily be overheard by the other fist.

Pru stands quietly aside as the men try to one-up each other. Men always seem to need to do this, and Pru has never understood it. Surely it's better to cooperate with your allies, rather than compete with them?

She doesn't let it worry her, though, and is soon weighing the purse of 400 gold in her hand, trying to figure out what to do with it. One the one hand, she really ought to save for magical protection, since the more she can protect herself, the less she'll have to burden the others with protecting her. On the other hand....

"It's always nice to have things to throw," she says. She goes into the duty post and buys another tanglefoot bag, along with a flask of holy water and another of alchemist's fire. She hands over 95 gold, and is pretty pleased with the transaction; she'll be saving the bulk of the coin, but adding a few bits to her arsenal as well.

Do we know what was stolen? By whom? Is this going to be a stealth mission or an assault? Was a ransom demand made?

Trimmack answers as best as he can the answers to Cameron's questions. "It is a magical tome that was stolen, whether stealth or assault depends on what we encounter when we get to Cheerful Stay, and no ransom was made that I am aware of... I will not be making any sort of bet... this mission is worth more to the fist and our careers, than any wager with those guys could ever be."

At Carver's suggestion, Trimmack interjects, "Horses are not a terrible idea. The Fist will provide one with full tack at no charge for official use. They also have some for purchase if you want your own."

Helmbane struggles to keep from laughing at Nikolai's retort. "That should get'em fumin'... good job."

Well, he would have demonstrated if Mookie would cooperate. In fact, the eagle-size raven just stands there, ignoring Bliss's kicks.

"Kid, stop showing off," the raven croaks. "It's not nice to rub it in the face of those who can't fly."
