An End To Villainy

Here Comes the Rain Again - DM Donna
Monday November 25th, 2013 4:15:21 AM

The drizzle your area of the forest is more than just refreshing: even from this distance from the outer walls of the camp, you can hear the more concentrated rainfall as it simultaneously drums and hisses its arrival upon the burning parts of Annoir's encampment.

Zeoll's spell revives the unconscious and unscrupulous pirate captain, who immediately begins to bluster:

"What's the meaning of this? I demand to see the Stallion at Fort Stag at once! I have rights!!!"

"You HAVE--" Linos begins angrily, then draws in a deep breath and continues in a tight voice, "--a LOT of explaining to do. We came here with the permission of the Stallion to get you and investigate their claims that you must face the justice of Bonetown."

"Lies--ALL LIES!!!" Annoir shouts.

"So you say," Linos answers with a growl, "Stallion Pholus may not be as inclined to disbelieve them after I give my eyewitness testimony about how your spellcasters detonated fireballs upon your orders!"

"Surely you can't hold me responsible for over-enthusiastic wizards and clerics?" Annoir asks ingenuously. Before anything else can be said, you hear the approach of hoofbeats and a pair of centaurs canter out of the underbrush.

"The fires are out now," the female with the black hide and mane reports. The tan male with her adds:

"There was quite a bit of damage to some structure that led into the camp, but the living trees have a very good chance of recovering after a while."

If anyone in the party is curious about the state of anything specific, they may ask the two new rangers about it now...

"Was there anything left in the campsite? We would like to have a look through it for more evidence." The elf does not even look at Annoir as the man speaks, doing his bet to bite his tongue in front of company.

"Save it for the Stallion, Annoir."

Turning to the rangers, "Mind if we look around the camp. I saw some things I might like to investigate further. I also would like to recover my sword."

He tries to think of where he's seen the crossed swords symbol before and why it would be on the crates in Annoir's camp. (Knowledge local: 9)

With permission from one of the Centaurs, he will head to Annoir's camp, invite others to come poke around with him.

Monday November 25th, 2013 9:23:34 AM

Kane' is happy Spire had the manacles for Captain Annoir, but again calls for rope and a strong person to tie the other three prisoners. A cloth expeditiously torn from YY's robe becomes a gag for the spellcaster.

As the others are taking over the followup without any direction, the shy and wise Witch keeps quiet.

Magana quickly quaffs seven potions from her pack until her wounds have completely faded. She passes her last three potions to Spire, Jozhur and Kane' to ease their injuries.

Next, she applies the manacles Spire has produced to Annoirs wrists. Moving on, she produces a length of hemp rope from her pack and binds the hands of the remaining prisoners, linking them and Annoir into prisoner train.

"I, too, have been wondering what kind of contraband we might find back there. Shall we return?"

Following Annoir's protestations of innocence, Magana take a moment to bind his mouth also, ripping a piece off his own garments to do so. "Your shouting annoys me," she growls at him.

Zeoll takes the time to search Annoir and each of the captured minions thoroughly (Take 20 on the search check with Guidance and Taurs Try = 38). He also detects magic on all of them.

Then he repeats the process with his friends looking through the ruins, but only after tying up prisoners with rope and making sure the NPC centaurs will keep watch.

Here Comes the Rain Again - DM Donna
Tuesday November 26th, 2013 3:10:37 AM

The pair of rangers listen to the questions of the Bonetown crew, one of them utilizing a length of silk rope to bind the hands of the prisoners and create a line to use in order to lead them, handing the lead end of the rope to Kane', as he was the one who wanted the prisoners secured.

Zeoll's thorough search & Detect Magic check helps the wily old Wemic to find and remove various bits & pieces of equipment from the different members of the captive party, amongst which are the rapier he took off Annoir and a ring he was wearing; two suits of banded mail; and the wand and a pair of bracers in the possession of Spellcaster YY.

They confirm to the rest of the Bonetown crew that the druids and the other rangers are concentrating more on the surviving wildlife and whishtal trees...since the non-Centaurs are here to investigate, they're more than happy to allow them to do just that.

"Shemeska has been blinded by one of the spellcasters," Linos tells the other rangers, "Would you take him to the Clearspring Temple so he may be healed by the druids there..?" The male and female rangers nod, taking the Drow sharpshooter in hand and escorting him away.

"You get to look after your prisoners," they tell the party, "You've more than earned the right. See you all at the Clearspring Temple!" The pair gallop off with Shemeska, eager to report the latest developments to their superiors.

"Let's go see what secrets Annoir's camp holds..." Linos suggests.

GM OOC: I don't have "burned versions" of the various lean-to's and walls destroyed by the fire, but feel free to use the pictures in the GoogleDoc with the combat visuals to point out where your characters are looking at what's left of the camp.

The walls of the "twisty entrance passage" are definitely no longer there, as well as the wooden lean-to-like structure that was east/southeast of that passage. Also consumed by fire are the western half of the stacked crates (the ones that Jozhur leaped up on to get to Spellcaster PP), as well as the two handcarts that were parked just south and just west of those crates, too. The tent north of the crates is partially destroyed.

Everyone needs to make Perception checks AND please tell me which areas of the camp your PC is poking through, too.

Zeoll insists that at least two PCs wait behind to guard the captives. That includes gagging Annoir and the casters. Zeoll would prefer to search, because he has sharp eyes and weak muscles, but if no big and strong volunteer steps forward -- *cough*Magana*cough* -- the old liontaur will play guard.

Perception -- used to keep watch over prisoners OR to go search the center right (east) part of the enemy camp ... with Guidance and Taur's Try cantrips ... 27.

Kane' ducks his head and hands back Magana's potion. "I am usually the one healing the others after a battle", he quietly says with a small smile. The BloodWitch produces a wand and heals himself, Spire, Rozan, and Jozhur.

Kane' shyly thanks the other centaur-rangers for use of their rope. He is glad Shemseka is getting the assistance he needs as well. Looking around, the Bloodwitch clears his throat and steps into the leadership role again.

" We need to split into 3 groups", he informs the Lionfish crew, " two for the prisoners, two for searching the camp living quarters, and two to search the wagons. Once the searchers finish the camp, see if you can find any more evidence against Captain Annoir and the Whistal Trees."

"Magana Ma'am and Spire, you should guard Captain Annoir and his crew. Probably use non-lethal force to knock them out, but if it a choice between them and you..." Kane' doesn't end the sentence, counting on the two warriors AND the prisoners being experienced enough to draw the inevitable conclusions.

"Zeoll and Rozan please go with Linos and check out the wagons and grounds. Jozhur and I can search the huts."

Kane' puts actions to words and offers the rope to Magana then goes with the crew back to the camp to search the huts.

Aftermath - DM Donna
Wednesday November 27th, 2013 2:52:25 AM

GM OOC: I do believe that Zeoll and Spire having channeled positive healing energy before DOES take precedence--if your character was healed up for the 17hp(?) of curing energy, then your PC likely would not have needed to use potions and/or the magic wand. Of course, that also depends on the damage your PC suffered during the battle. Them fireball-tossing so-and-so spellcasters were nasty...

Spire can tell that the bracers and the armor most probably have extra defensive enchantments on them, and the swords are likewise magicked to be extra damaging. The ring's magic seems to be passive in nature, although it's not radiating the same sort of aura as the bracers and the armor. The magic wand feels just plain...evil.

Returning to the encampment is a sobering moment--the damage done by the fire has left a goodly portion of the place in blackened ruins, but everyone there knows that the damage could have been ever so much worse. There's a gaping hole in the outer camp wall where the entrance to the twisty passage used to be, as well as a HUGE "hole" overhead where the man-made canopy had been interwoven with the branches of the living whishtal trees. Those living trees that had been used as posts in various spots of the outer wall (especially those on the southern end of the camp) are the ones that have suffered the most fire damage.

In short, the living trees look mostly bare and ugly from having been burnt.

Pure rage radiates from every pore of the Centaur ranger as your party carefully enters the soggy remains of the camp.

"Those trees..." he says quietly, looking around him, "...they've been here for centuries...providing shelter for the wildlife and reaching up to the heavens of The Wold in natural glory...and all it took was a moment of thoughtless avarice to do all this damage..." He stepped over to where the burned-out shells of the stack of crates had been and--in a fit of uncontrollable anger--lashes out with his hooves, smashing a stack of them into kindling.

As ugly and smoky and ashy as the camp is, much of it is still intact, and the group's probing through the unharmed bits of the place happen to uncover at couple of very curious things:

Some of the handcarts that are not destroyed have crates in them. In fact, that kick of Linos' managed to shatter a bunch of the burnt crates, and break open some of the ones that were only burnt on the outside, spilling the alamine roots within them to the ground.

However, the sharp-eyed amongst the party can see there are bottles and tuns amongst the knobbly roots...

And the partially-burned tent that stands north of the crates Jozhur had leaped upon during battle has a rather peculiar set-up in it: barrels and vats and beakers and stuff...and there are rather dark grapes in some of the vats...

EVERYONE IN THE PARTY MUST ROLL FOR PERCEPTION (again.) Anyone with Know Local may add 2 to their roll. Anyone with Brewing or Vintner skill may add another 2 to their roll. Any Taur may add another 2 to their roll--and all of these bonuses DO stack with each other.

15 or less: What in the Wold are bottles and tuns doing amongst a bunch of medicinal roots..?
16 - 21 Highlight to display spoiler: {: wait...the bottles and tuns have a familiar-looking seal on them...an "official" Centaur Isle winemakers' guild.}
22 and higher Highlight to display spoiler: {: heyyyyy...some of those seals have that extra-doohookey-thing on them that are supposed to show that the wine has been Officially Endorsed by the Temple of Domi on Centaur Isle..!!!}

Amongst the debris of the ashy, mucky area of the camp are the abandoned weapons (that great-ax I believe Magana was wondering about?) that some of the camp defenders had been forced to drop before attempting to flee and/or escaping the battle.

Zeoll makes sure that Jozhur gets his sword back.

Kane' makes no comment about Magana bringing the prisoners along, each of them have their area of expertise and the minotaur obviously knows hers. It would be foolish for the BloodWitch to try and make the Lionfish crew into automatons. That and it would cause too much conflict.

The half-elf frowns when Jozhur also guards the prisoners, making 3 of the crew NOT searching, yet Linos' anger quickly uncovers some more evidence.

Things click into Kane's mind. And he speaks quietly to all in the clearing. "The Temple of Domi has never endorsed this Blue Wine. Captain Annoir and his crew have been making illegal unsanctioned Blue Wine AND counterfeiting the Temple's Seal of Approval! The alamine root harvesting is only a cover!"

Now Kane' is glad there are three guarding the prisoners, for by burning the Whistal Trees, making Blue Wine, and counterfeiting the Seal of Domi, Captain Annoir is under death sentence three times over.

Revelations & Responses - DM Donna
Thursday November 28th, 2013 2:20:27 PM

Of all the Bonetown crew, it is Magana who can most identify with the howl of pure outrage Linos bellows as he recognizes the precise depth of perfidy being perpetrated by Annoir and his fellow conspirators. Zeoll--being a Taur himself--remembers just how sacred Blue Wine is to Centaurs and Minotaurs alike: it is an immediate death sentence to drink or be in possession of such wine without the express permission of the Temple of Domi.

One can only imagine the horrors that await anyone so foolish as to get caught in the middle of a sacred forest (to which their own actions have caused extensive damage!) operating an on-going counterfeiting scheme under the very noses of the local Stallion and the ruling Corral!

"Death is too good for you, biped!!!" roars Linos. "I have no doubts that the Temple masters will see to it that you are killed, raised, and killed again for every crime you have committed!!!"

The greatax that Magana finds is very finely crafted--obviously a masterwork item.

So...there you have it. The sullen and silent Annoir's plot here on Centaur Isle is now exposed.

Now what does the party do?

Kane' agrees that making camp is a good thing and returning in the morning. He also doesn't worry about if Annoir will get justice in Fort Stag or Bonetown; either will work for the half-elf as long as Annoir doesn't escape!

To help perhaps future matters, Kane' plucks a few hairs from each of the prisoners and keeps them in little packets among his spell components pouch. He doesn't explain why, only counting on their own conclusions on why a Witch would want parts of their bodies...

"We are in part here on behalf of the Stallion Pholus, and his justice should reign here. I would be satisfied to only take back Captain Annoir's head; nicely salted down."

Kane' tries to get double guards on the prisoners, one Lionfish crew and one centaur through the night.

Planning the Next Move - DM Donna
Monday December 2nd, 2013 1:11:12 AM

"I will check with the others who came to help," Linos replies to Kane', "Just to make sure that all evidence that will be needed for the trial has been duly recorded. As long as I can confirm this, then we may dispose of this...trash...at our discretion. Frankly I'm hoping that will be sooner rather than later..." The centaur trots off to confer with the other centaurs on and/or near the scene.

Spire is keeping a close eye on the captured items...the spellcraft skill had been utilized to make some very good educated guesses as to whether or not they were magic, but it is going to take the casting of Identify spells to pinpoint exactly what the items in question actually do...especially the ring that nobody could be sure about.

Linos returns after lengthy conversations with his fellow rangers, reporting that there had been two druids here who used a device to preserve the discoveries made within the camp regarding the counterfeit Purple Wine and Blue Wine production, so the contraband may now be destroyed without concern about whether it will be needed later.

"Spending the night and starting the return trip to Fort Stag in the morning is a good idea," the young Centaur says, "There are enough of my fellow forest rangers here so that the prisoners will be well guarded--our spellcasters can fully rest without interruption." He nods in the direction of Spire, Kane' and Zeoll.

The tent in the northwestern corner of the camp (apparently it served as the mess hall for the camp) is the one that is the least damaged by the fire, smoke and summoned rain, so it can serve as a relatively secure and private sleeping area for the party if they so choose...

Magana picks a wagon wheel as a target and gleefully starts slinging bottles at it. The shattering noise is most satisfying to her and she muses that this could be considered bar-fight practice!

Once it gets dark she finds the most comfortable patch of earth within sight of the prisoners and lays out her blanket to sleep upon.

Kane' is happy to use the old mess hall as a sleeping area. As to the contraband, he approves of Magana's solution. "I think smashing is a better idea than trying to burn it all. That big a fire would create ... problems, I think."

The Bloodwitch also thanks Linos for the offer of the centaurs to watch over the prisoners to give the Lionfish crew a full night's rest, but quietly declines. "Captain Annoir has proven both elusive and persuasive. I would prefer sharing the guard to ensure he will not escape if he still has secret allies." Besides, the spontaneous spellcaster only needs 8 hours of sleep, and not all at one time, to refresh his bond with his secretive Power.

Wine, Wine, Wine... DM Donna
Tuesday December 3rd, 2013 1:33:22 PM

The counterfeit wine can be found in tuns and casks inside many of the hand carts. Many of the crates hold bottles and wineskins with the fake seals of authenticity for Blue Wine. Inside the large tent in the northeast corner of the compound are large wooden vats that have the fermented grape/berry mix from which the wine was being counterfeited.

All of the above takes about a half an hour to maybe an hour to smash apart, break up and/or otherwise ruin so that it becomes unusable.

Annoir can do nothing but glare, fume and then splutter with seething outrage when Jozhur gets creative. He remains silent, as do the other prisoners under the watchful eyes of the extra Centaurs there to guard them.

The party--as stated before--is free to rest up, regain magic, whittle a mermaid from wood and/or otherwise participate in their overnight downtime activities. However, anyone wishing to share the guard duty over the prisoners should let me know which watch they take:

12 hours of darkness break up into three watches: first watch (starts at dusk); second watch (starts a couple of hours before midnight) and third watch (starts a couple hours after midnight and goes until dawn.)

All Through the Night - DM Donna  d20=16 ; d20=1 ; d100=59 ; d20=20 ;
Wednesday December 4th, 2013 12:46:30 PM

The night is temperate and clear, and passes with nothing out of the ordinary occurring for the party members.

The prisoners remain secure and sullen (especially Annoir.)

Magana's snoring is only interrupted when Linos--with a snort and a roll of his eyes--uses a hoof to "gently" prod her into rolling over onto her side as she sleeps. (Well--it's a "gentle prod" to a Minotaur anyhow...it didn't wake her up at all and most everyone else could sleep better with her snoring pointed away from them...)

Dawn arrives, washing the sky with pink and gold hues in its earliest hour. By the time the sky has returned to a bright blue, the aroma of grilled venison greets the party. After checking that the prisoners are still secure and have been given some bread and water, Linos makes his report to the Bonetown crew:

"Not a drop of that fake wine left! The prisoners are ready for transport. And we can take a pathway that will divert around the area where we ran into trouble with some of the local wildlife..." He grimaces in remembrance of the battle with the ape-like plants and giant fungi. "All in all, it will take us about two days to get back. Is there anything you need to do before we start out on the journey..?"

"Linos Sir, may I lead once more to keep our pace together? You will be right behind me then Rozan, the prisoners, Magana, Spire, Zeoll, and Jozhur. That will allow our strongest warriors to ensure that no prisoner lives if they attempt to break away."

"Oh, Magana Ma'am, would you and Jozhur like to check the bonds to make sure they are still securely bound? It would be unfortuneate if they are only pretending the bonds still hold them and you will have to kill any of the prisoners."
It is a request, but again, the former slave who grew to adulthood in a very hard school is not joking.

Desperate Bargaining - DM Donna
Friday December 6th, 2013 1:17:00 AM

"How am I supposed to know..???" Annoir says to Jozhur, obviously not used to being refused. "I didn't hang around Bonetown long enough to read any bounty posters!" He huffs an audible breath.

"2000 gold, then?" he offers. Seeing no takers, he ups his ante: "Three? Four? FIVE???" Linos seizes Annoir's shirt front in one hand and hauls the captain up so that the human's face is a mere inch away from his own. You gotta admit, Annoir looks pretty darn silly hanging from the Centaur's grip with both feet dangling a good foot or two off the ground.

"You--" snarls the ranger, "--have two choices, firestarter...you may allow the Minotaur to gag you as she so kindly offered...or I may cut your lying tongue out of your mouth. Which is it to be..?"

The cowardly pirate opts for Magana's gag, so it looks like Rozan's offhand question about the physical location of any such gold will go unanswered for the duration. The rogue's extra search of Annoir yields nothing, as any items he had on his person (that rapier and the ring, neither of which have been Identified just yet) are no longer in his possession.

The first part of the return trip passes uneventfully. The party reaches a picturesque glade where Linos declares you all can camp for the evening. He points out the location of a nearby stream for water and sets about to making the clearing safe for a small cookfire.

DM Rob - A Time for Justice
Monday December 9th, 2013 5:02:55 AM

The party are cautious and remain vigilent throughout the night. They are close to bringing Captain Annoir back to Fort Stagg, and if he were to make an escape this would almost certainly be his last chance.

Zeoll casts a spell to detect evil in the nearby vicinity. None of the items radiate any evil, however there are very faint evil auras around the captives with Annoir's being the strongest.

Kane' takes the opportunity to identify the Ring and Wand the party recovered.

The ring is a silver band engraved with 2 dolphins. Nestled between the noses of the dolphins is set a tear shaped sapphire. Kane' identifies it as a Ring of Swimming

The wand (fashioned of darkwood and bone) he identifies as a Wand of Bane (CL1 - 37/50 charges remaining).

Morning cannot come soon enough for the group.

Alas Annoir gives Magana no cause to strike him. The captain seems resigned to his fate. He occasionally gives a futile struggle with his bonds only to receive a nudge from one of the taur guards to let him know he is always under observation.

The group resume their march and soon enter the Fort with the captives in tow.

"Fetch the Stallion!" Linos demands of a nearby guard "Justice must be served and these prisoners executed!"

The guard nods to Linos and trots off.

Annoir makes one final bid to escape what looks to be certain death. "Please!" he begs the party "Please, take me back to Bonetown! Let me face justice there! You won't collect your bounty with me dead"

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC22 - HP33)
Monday December 9th, 2013 7:00:07 AM

Zeoll asks Kane for a look at that wanted poster. Does it say "Wanted dead or alive"?

Honestly, the old wemic is looking forward to seeing centaur justice. But he has a few questions, and says so to his friends, out of earshot of the prisoners.

"We rreally should know morre. Who arre his customerrs? Did he have any uncapturred confederrates? Wherre did he learrn to make the wine? How did he plan to escape the island with his contrraband, if he just sold his boat?"

Zeoll raises these issues with Linos, and asks what he thinks. The old liontaur mentions that he really wants to have a chance to talk with the Stallion before the end. Maybe there can be some clemency or mercy for one or two of the henchmen if they can give answers to these questions.

Jozhur has a word with the others, away from the prisoners. "I agree with Zeoll. If we can get the Stallion to agree to go easy on one of the prisoners in exchange for some information, that could be very beneficial. I would also like to collect the bounty on Annoir, as satisfying as it would be to see him brought to justice so swiftly."

"My guess is that Annoir has wealth hidden somewhere. I'd like to find it."

Magana (Craig) (AC19 CMD22 F+7/R+3/W+2) [HP 57 of 57]

Magana does not understand the everyones concerns with the bounty and hidden wealth, but offers, as it seems to her, the obvious solution.

"If the Stallion insists on killing Annoir, just insist that he pay your bounty since you have prior claim to the criminal. If he is honorable, he will pay it. If he is not honorable, well..." She puts on a nasty smile. "There are ways to even up the score with such folk.

"The other option is to ask the Stallion to only remove Annoir's hands, feet and tongue. This would serve as an example to other thieves and liars, yet allow you to still deliver him alive for your bounty collection. This punishment would almost certainly loosen the tongues of his cohorts as well. Simple, yes?"

Kane' reads the poster again and confirms it is only if Annoir is alive, but the half-elf is unmoved. "I would think we may see better justice done here in the land of centaurs than in the pirate-infested Bonetown. The only mercy I see is the mercy we would provide those future innocents that could otherwise be exploited by Captain Annoir."

Personally, Kane' likes the idea of getting the bounty which would support the Lionfish and her crew nicely, but he is much too shy to come out and say it. Quietly, the BloodWitch hopes one of his companions will breech the subject.

When Zeoll and Magana begin speaking of violence, the elf grimaces, moving between them slowly. While the elf is by no means short, the two taurs tower over him, making him feel rather meek. "Let us not... be hasty. The stallion will deliver the sentence, and we will have to abide by it. His word is law, here, whether we like that or not."

DM Rob - A Time for Justice
Tuesday December 10th, 2013 6:21:19 AM

Zeoll has some questions he would like answered, and puts them to Linos

Linos takes the taur aside to talk away from the ears of the captives.
"Your guess is as good as mine who his customers are. Given his ship isn't in dock though it would be safe to assume some of his crew aren't here to face justice." Linos' nostrils flare indicating anger at this "As for how he was moving the stuff, based on what we saw in his camp best guess is that he loaded it in the bottom of crates and covered that with the alamine root as a cover"

Linos steps away to confront the captives - eyeballing each of them and practically daring them to try something.

Out of earshot of the centaurs the party debate the fate of Captain Annoir. Should they petition the Stallion for clemency should he provide useful information? Should they request - or demand? - compensation for their lost bounty? Or should they take Magana's suggestion and ask for different pieces of Annoir to be removed but he remain alive?

Decisions will soon be made though, as Stallion Pholus arrives with numerous guards and onlookers in tow. Even the most dense of the party (*cough* Magana *cough*) can tell that he is furious "Linos! Explain!" demands the Stallion.

It would appear that anything to be settled will be done so here in the open, under the shadow of the whistal trees.

Linos very tactfully and respectfully gives the Stallion a recap of the groups adventure, the discovery of the camp, and the discovery of the contraband. The guards that travelled with the group nod along in agreement.

"I hereby charge each of these people with the wanton destruction of our environment, the illegal manufacture of blue wine, the illegal trading of blue wine, and the illegal possession of blue wine" Linos sumarises to the Stallion.

The centaur crowd that has grown to encircle the scene roar and boo loudly. These normally calm folk are obviously incensed. "Kill them! Kill them now!" "Death calls for death!" "Send them to Gargul" are among the most polite things being called out.

Stallion Pholus raises his hands in the air to regain control of the crowd. "Silence!" he yells "Silence!".

The Stallion approaches the captives with his arms crossed "Do any of you have anything to say in your defense?"

The captive spellcaster drops to his knees and starts begging - it wasn't his fault, the Captain made him do it, I'll testify against him - and so on.
Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {His tears and fear seem genuine. Whether he is blameless is anyone's guess}

"Therre is also a prrice on his head for rreturrn alive to Bonetown, to the farr norrth. Why would the lawless powerrs of Bonetown want him rreturrned alive? Perrhaps forr the satisfaction of killing him on site. Perrhaps because they want some inforrmation or serrvice frrom him. Kane' keeps in the background. The large crowd and angry voices make him want to find a corner and disappear. Captain Annoir's glares don't help either, and the half-elf Blood-Witch tries to make himself lost in Zeoll's greater bulk.

He watches in amazment at the event that is taking place. Hoping that this is going to end with some money in his pocket but from the cries from the crowd make him think otherwise. Looking over at the prisoners and seeing Annoir staring at them. He stares back and smiles.

"Stallion, if I may. Zeoll here speaks wisely. I personally have little interest in attempting to transport Annoir back to Bonetown when justice can be served here."

"However," looking to the act being put on by the spellcaster, not sure what to make of it, "If one of them could be spared for providing is useful information we would greatly appreciate it, Stallion."

Magana looks the Stallion up and down, trying to gauge his fighting prowess. As a minotaur she is almost certain she could clobber any centaur any day of the week. The Stallion is a much older centaur than the rest of the crowd. He does have a few scars, but who doesn't? The thing that Magana realises though is that in order to have become a Stallion - a leader - in the largest port on Centaur Island, Stallion Pholus must surely command a lot of respect. Attacking him in any way would surely see each and every centaur turn against the party.

Spire, Kane' and Rozan remain quiet, content to observe the proceedings.

Zeoll proposes that the Stallion be lenient on the captives that provide useful information. Jozhur supports the wemic as he respectfully addresses the Stallion.

A few members of the crowd boo at this.

The spellcaster continues sobbing "Yes! Yes! I can tell you the name of the new ship! I can tell you about the current crew! Please!" A wet patch forms at the front of the mans pants.

"I'm sorry" the Stallion replies to Zeoll "but each of these men are accused of committing not one, but four crimes - each of which carries an immediate death sentence. Centaur law is very clear on the punishment and I cannot in good conscience overturn that." The Stallion steps away from the party.

"I find these men guilty on all counts. They are to be taken to the cells where the priests will read them the rites. Following this they will be executed, their bodies cremated, and their ashes cast to sea. There is no place on this island for their likes to be buried. Guards! Take them away"

The guards drag the spellcaster to his feet and shepherd him and the other captives away. "Let me go and I can make this worth your while! Name your price and it's yours! Anyone who frees me will be rewarded!" Annoir's screams trail off as he is taken away.

The Stallion returns his attention to the party "You are all forbidden from leaving the walls of this port to our island" he says in a shocking order. His tone softens as he continues. "Understand that I am very grateful for what you have done, and whilst you are in the port you will be treated as my honoured guests. As a Stallion it is my responsibility to protect my people, our culture and our island. It was my decision though to permit access to the island to Annoir and his cohorts. The damage he has caused may just as well have been done by me. I need some time to reevaluate my decisions. I hope you understand"

When all is said, the Stallion nods to each of you in turn and departs. His head hangs low and his shoulders are slumped. It would appear to have been a difficult day for him.

The crowd start to slowly dissipate.

Zeoll watches the stallion closely and tries to discern what is going on in his head. Sense Motive 19.

The old liontaur says softly to his friends, "Rreally, therre was almost no doubt that this would be the outcome. The law among all Taurrs is clearr. The centaurrs and minotaurrs arre most devout, assurredly, and the Blue Wine is holy. Any outcome otherr than death would have been a huge surrprrise."

Zeoll moderates his tone to a whisper, and urges his friends to likewise use discretion.

"Especially since the Stallion must be feeling verry betrrayed. Rrememberr, we hearrd that Annoirr has been coming herre forr a decade. That's a lot of blue wine he's been taking out of herre, underr Pholus' verry nose. You saw how beat up he was about it."

"But since we must stay herre, perrhaps we can make good use of ourr time. I myself am inclined to rreturrn to Hollyhocks to tell him what has trranspirred. He also may be interrested in the plant crreaturres we met. Would anyone else like to come with me? Orr some betterr idea?"

OOC: Did Linos or the other NPCs end up with any loot? Or did we get it all? I'm counting Annoir's rapier (unidentified), Annoir's Ring of Swimming (a silver band engraved with 2 dolphins. Nestled between the noses of the dolphins is set a tear shaped sapphire), a darkwood and bone Wand of Bane (CL1 - 37/50 charges remaining), two suits of banded mail, a masterwork greataxe, and a pair of bracers in the possession of Spellcaster YY (unidentified).

OOC: For the record, Zeoll has used on this adventure: one alch fire, Shield of Faith scroll, Protection from Evil scroll, Bless scroll, tanglefoot bag, hero point. i gotta update my PC sheet soon.

OOC: Oh, and the last time we got XP was Oct. 24 ... hint hint.

A dissatisfied grunt issues from the tauress as the Stallion leaves. "I should have expected this from a centaur politician," she rumbles. "He reaps the benefit of our efforts and confines us as well!" She snorts and spits in the direction of the absent Pholus in a display of derision.

"I want wine, and lots of it. Perhaps it will rinse this foul taste from my mouth!"

Kane' is of many minds, but his overriding concern is to not make trouble, not stand out. But he has learned he has to be brave and do the right thing, not necessarily the lawful thing. And the saving of the spellcaster from death has the potential to help many others who are unknown and innocent. What if they were able to capture Captain Annoir's ship and crew? Would that not help?

And if they defied the Stallion's will, would the price on the head of all the Lionfish and the greater distrust of non-centaurs in Fort Stag for a generation be worth it?

Reluctantly, Kane' has to agree that the life of one condemned criminal is not worth the years of pain that action would cause, and the half-elf walks with Zeoll away from Stallion Pholus's palace.

"Better a swift death than to rot away in a prison cell," the elf comments meekly. He agrees that wine would be best, and lots of it.

As the stallion leaves, he turns to the rest of the part and says in a whisper " What! thats it, we risk our lives to bring them justice and this is what we get in return. As soon as we can get off this island is not soon enough. Ok someone point me to a warm bath and food.

Maybe later we can get together and figure out a way to find his ship and new crew.....
Cause the way i see it Annoir owes us.

Zeoll watches Stallion Pholus depart, but can't really get a hunch as to what he may be feeling at this point (Sense Motive 'hunch' check failed - didn't hit DC20). He proposes the group visit Hollyhocks

Magana just shakes her head in disgust, no doubt thinking about how this matter would have been handled were they on Minotaur Island. The only cure for this is wine and she wants the nearest tavern.

Kane' is happy to follow the group, content to keep his observations and opinions to himself. He remains completely silent on the matters. One might wonder how the witch would respond if pushed...

Spire pipes in but mostly to agree about heading towards the tavern. Soon.

Rozan is disatisfied with the Stallion's response, but is wise enough to only voice this to the party.

The crowd have for the most part gone by now, either back to their normal lives or to follow the guards and yell abuse at the prisoners.

"Come" Linos says as he approaches the party. He puts his hand on Jozhur's shoulder, perhaps sensing the mood of the group "I think we have all earned a drink. To the Mothering Mare?"

OOC: Folks, I just wanted to add how great you guys are doing with posting! Let's keep this up for the rest of the year and end on a high note! I'll keep it in mind for loot and xp :)

Zeoll is fine with joining the party for a drink, but only the one for him. He still wants to go visit Hollyhocks after, and he wants a clear head.

At the tavern, the old liontaur raises his voice in a simple, lively, fun hymn to Domi. It's been many years since he sang it, but it seems appropriate in this place.

Perform 14.

Spire begins searching for something at the bottom of his glass, and seems unable to find it as he orders drink after drink. Soon, the elf is slurring his words and mumbling darkly to himself - although casual observers only saw him drink two glasses...

Magana raises her voice alongside Zeoll's and despite having no skill, aptitude, training, or even memory of the full lyrics manages a passable accompaniment (Perform 14). Perhaps her enthusiasm and the added of ingredient of several jugs of wine smooth out her normally discordant voice. She dredges up some of the bawdier tunes she remembers from home before her exile, and belts them out with a passion born of homesickness.

She makes an effort to coax any centaur patrons into joining them, bribing some with wine as needed. Clearly her low opinion of the Stallion does not extend to his subjects, at least not at the individual level, and the more fun-loving side of her personality exposes itself more and more as the wine continues to flow.

(Let me know how much gold the evening's merriment sets Magana back!)
