Eral continues on in the back oblivious to the most obvious things (Perception of 1....Again...). Hopefully he is able to keep up with the group...

Steadily the group trots along the Goblin trail. Being slightly ahead of the group allows Hazel and Faoil to concentrate on the job at hand... the rest of the group appears to be somewhat distracted... Shel and Alouryn keep whispering among the two.Eral and Edric both try hard to stay focussed by the ladies shatter makes that near to impossible...
Murphy lead Pipa. So far the Pony has behaved nicely. As he passes a some brambles he collects a handful of tasty looking berries. Adomorn rries to fit in but his mind also is a bit distracted...

"Be careful here!" Hazel sneers to his friends hoping they will shut up...

Then suddenly Hazel, Faoil and Alouryn hear a twig snap...through the briars you can perceive a Goblin sentry... Hazel keeps focussing and is able to spot the Goblin sentry...

Goblin Lair Encounter

- you can cross the briars at 5ft per movement phase. A double move allows you to cross 10ft per turns. If you make a succesful climb check DC12 you can cross 10ft per movement.
- the sentry is approx 160ft away from the lair
- Pipa will need serious persuasion to go through the briars.
- shooting through the briars will increase AC with 2 per 5 ft of briars
- there's a track that leads south which will allow you to enter the clearing without going through the briars
- stealth is by -4 when going through the briars
- you can see the lair entrance on the right


It now is entirely up to the Humble's sword to decide how to proceed...

Shel holds tight in her position. She turns to whisper to the others. "I think we need to take the long way around, don't we? It'll take forever for us to cut through those brambles. Even if they hear us on the path, we might be able to position ourself, so that we can limit the number of them that can get to us with the same briars."

OOC: EVERYONE - please read carefully

"Hush, don't rush, Hazel," Murphy whispers urgently. "A dog's bark does not mean panic is needed. There are goblin dogs about, too, you know. Calm. Stop." Murphy activates his message device, and hones it in on Hazel and Shel, so they can whisper back and forth as need be to communicate with each other at a distance. He grabs a big bag of caltrops and gives it to Hazel. "Most everyone, go on trail - hustle. If you know goblin, talk about toads, complain and swear. Hazel, you and Faoil can go through brush, and make as much noise as you want - in goblin - tell the sodbaubau you will kill it for going through the brush. Scatter the caltrops from this bag in front of the doors in the rock - if you want to, when you can."

Then he calls out in the goblin tongue in an alto voice. Brraekas, sodbaubau. Porr'gek djumee. Goblin translation: Highlight to display spoiler: {Shut up, bitch-dog. Home is near.}

He tries to pull Pippa forward, but she will not budge [handle animal 7 - great timing]. He drops the lead rope. (If someone else wants to pick up the lead rope and try to move Pippa forward, perhaps they will have better luck.)

He modulates his voice to a low tenor to make it seem like another person, and says, Gei bu prroff, lakshakh fsekh. Psledni chelo tam, gei buut'hak kpalop. Kha-kha-khai! Vyechrrom asadem neineichik - ksas roeman! Goblin translation: Highlight to display spoiler: { I run fast, beat you all. Last person there, I beat with this stick! Ha-ha-ha! Tonight we roast pony - maybe halfling! Our people glad see us bring this news!}

Murphy runs down the trail as fast as his legs will carry him, using a string of goblin invective. He also says in goblin, "They be happy see us. Guard - come see what we brought! Help us carry, or you get none!"

-------- Aside ---------

Murphy spent a great deal of time growing up in the company of the only goblin he knows of who lives in Crescent Valley, as well as learning more about the goblin tongue from his brother, Kendry. The first time Kendry gave him a lesson in goblin, he punched Murphy in the throat - the first time his older brother had ever struck him enough to hurt.

As Murphy choked and gagged, Kendry explained in halfling that frequently punching each other is a common part of goblin communication. Bobbles, the goblin, said that was true, which is why he likes halflings who do not hit him.

OOC: Just checking... Hazel is riding Faoil. Faoil is faster (twice actually) than the Halflings. Faoil can move and Hazel can act after Faoil moves (the beauty of riding combat).
I am wrong in something?

Alouryn tries to quietly move down the trail but she moves too quickly to be quiet: she doubles moves to Q4. Trying too hard to avoid ripping her robes with the bramble she is snapping twigs with each stride.

Steven:
Right, that first roll was a 26 on stealth. He worked on keeping stealthy until breaking out in the full-voiced goblin tongue.
Murphy: Bluff:16 (gave a circumstantial +2, because Murphy started learning goblin about 6-7 years ago, knows several people who speak it, including a goblin and a very bright half-ogre/half-ogre mage bard, and the goblin sentry cannot see that he does not look like a goblin).
Pippa: Stealth: 4 (not a clue as to whether a pony gets any adjustments on stealth checks) - but Murphy mentioned the pony in his goblin discourse, so that's fine if the sentry can hear her.

By the way, if you can change above:

[Adomorn - you get a +4 for stealth, so rolled a 20 - but at this point, don't worry about trying to be stealthy - unless you want to crawl through the brambles - in which case your two rolls apply, and, with the -4 adjustment, your rolls make 16 and 18. Your character can speak goblin - so feel free to make a comment in goblin, if you wish.]

Realising trying to be stealthy isn't going to help her, Alouryn runs to square E8 hoping to find some end to the trail soon.

As soon as the Goblin Sentinel is spotted, Shel tries with succes to remain hidden. But just as she suggests to stealthy follow the path between the thorny briars Faoil barks... so Hazel spurs Flaoil and the dynamic duo brave the hedge hoping to pop out on the other side...

Murphy hopes to keep everyone on the trail vanish as he sees Hazel and Flaoil dissapear in the thorns...still he tries to fool the Sentry by acting like a Goblin himself... dispite a great impersonation of a Goblin that would mislead many, the Sentinel senses something's wrong... he begins to move towards the cave readying his bow...

Even though Alouryn and Adomorn hurry down the trail they manage to do so wihout the sentinel perceiving them.

Pipa could not be persuaded by Murphy to follow him down the trail so Eral helps him out. Like Edric, who suggested to stay on the trail and remain sneaky, they too run down the track together...

But Hazel's the only one brave (foolish?) enough to breaking through to the clearing behind the briars... for a split second he stands eye in eye with the Goblin Sentinel... not wasting time he immediatly launches a couple of sling stones. Both fly wide...

The goblin raises his bow and sends an arrow towards Hazel... (hits AC 20, damage 1hp)

Then the Sentinel shouts ans screams... probably trying to attract the attention of his friends...

Hazel is unable to attack himself, as guiding Faoil on the charge takes all his attention. But he prepares to have an attack of opportunity if the Goblin tries to get past him.

It's time to take care of things. Murphy summons a small air elemental, and sends it to attack the goblin sentry. Then he takes a plunge into the brambles, following the path that Faoil and Hazel broke through the hedge as quickly as he can.

The swirling figure of air shoots forth over the top of the brambles, and comes down to slam (hit AC 22) against the screaming sentry for 3 hp damage, and shoots away from the goblin, preparing for a return strike (next round).

As Hazel did not take the sack of caltrops, Murphy has it with him.

With Hazel engaging the Goblin sentinel on his own, Shel, Eral, Adomorn and Alouryn race down the path South... Alouryn wonders if there will ever come an end to it... Eral drags Pipa behind him ans checks to see where Murphy and Edric are...

Those two try to benefit from taking the same path through the thorns...once they get on the other side they see how Hazel and Flaoil charge into the Goblin Sentinel without succes...
They can also see how Murphy's air elemental succesfully kicks the sentinel in the behind...

With Hazel and the Air elemental attacking him, the sentinel attempts to get to the Goblin lair... he makes a 5 ft step to R15 (avoiding AoO unless either Hazel, Faoil or the Air Elemental have reach) and the he hurries towards the lair entrance...

Hazel notices another goblin coming out of the lair... he looks a little drowsy and obviously wonders what the noise is all about... his eyes open a little further when he sees the dog riding halfling and an elemental engaged with the guars... he shouts something over his shoulder but doesn't come nearer...

Murphy runs flat out to about V15, leaving the air elemental to continue its work.

The air elemental swoops from behind the fleeing goblin, but misses it, passing just over the sentry's right shoulder and continuing well beyond to about AJ 11. It does not yet notice the second goblin (perception 8), but Murphy does (perception 20).

Shel, Adomorn, Alouryn and Eral who drags Pipa behind, contine to race down the track. They all run at full speed (2 move actions at quadrupple speed)...
By the time they come round the bramble corner, they an see Murphy's Air elemental making a flyby at the escaping sentinel.
Hazel ald Faoil once again charge at the Goblin but they fail to get through the sentinel's armor... the goblinoid shouts in anger and fear... but he can see his kin springing forth from the Goblin Lair... Murphy and Edric too race towards the Goblin.

With his comrades on their way to help, the Goblin sentinel turns around and drops his bow and unsheateqs his blade ( move action provoking AoO !)... but before he is able to wield it he is tripped by Faoil! He falls prone on the ground... Leaving his bow on the ground he tries to stand provoking yet another AoO! Once he stands, he raises the blade and brings it crushing down on Hazel... the angle is precisely chosen but it's not a confirmed critical hit. Hit AC 22 (nat 20) hazel takes 3Hp damage.

From the lair a couple of Goblin come observing what the noise is all about. As soon as they see what goes on two of them ready their short bow and send nother 2 arrows - one at Hazel, the other towards the air elemental...

OOC: DM, can shel see the goblin archers well enough to target a Sleep spell at them? If so that's, her plan after moving forward 20'. If not, I'll make another post and adjust.

DM Steven : the Goblins coming from the lair are approx 150ft away so that makes it a DC15 perception check to have a visual on them

Shel moves forward, and begins casting her Sleep spell, hoping to incapacitate the archers and help the group that way.

Murphy hustles forward (possible AoO for goblin sentry against Murphy) to AD14 as he yells for the elemental and points toward the two crossbow-wielding goblins who just stepped out of the lair, one of whom shot at the elemental. He signals for the creature to go to them, then, making a whirling motion with his finger, hand and forearm pointing skyward, asks him to form into a whirlwind.

The air elemental is inclined to do so. It flies swiftly towards the pair, and begins to fly around in a very tight circle. Transforming into a twister, it picks up dust and debris from the ground, and possibly from the wall of the lair above the door if it is formed of earth. The goblin which loosed a bolt against the whirlwind a moment ago finds himself surrounded by the buffeting cylinder of air which reaches from the ground upwards to 30 feet - 5' in diameter at its base, 10' in the middle, and 15' in diameter at the top.

[Goblin #2 make a reflex saving throw, DC12, or take 5 hp damage. It must make a second reflex save or be picked up bodily and held suspended in the powerful winds, automatically taking 1d4+1 damage per round. Take a -4 penalty to dexterity and a -2 penalty on attack rolls. After passing over the first goblin, the elemental moves over the next goblin #3, which will need to make similar saving throws, and potentially suffer similar effects - damage 2. The elemental will take up as many goblins as it can now and in the next few rounds.] [The whirlwind does not provoke attacks of opportunity against the elemental.]

The swirling cloud of debris which the whirlwhind kicks up itself quickly reaches a diameter of 15' around the base and upwards; obscures all vision, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. Creatures 5 feet away have concealment, those farther away have total concealment. Those within the cloud of debris (basically AN15,16,17; AO15,16,17, AP15,16,17) must succeed on a concentration check (DC15 + spell level) to cast a spell.

Question: Hasn't Faoil been able to trip the Goblin?

DM Steven - you're correct I missed that one. The Goblin sentinel is knocked prone on the ground... please check the DM post above to see this corrected. Hazel and Faoil get another AoO due to the Goblin standing up... with only 6HP the Goblin falls quickly - even to the first AoO

(I went ahead and rolled Shel's perception to see if she can see the Goblins at the lair... Shel's perception 21)

Shel moves closer untill she has a clear visual on the Goblins... she then casts a sleep spell...

Murphy runs past the Goblin sentinel... there little risk for him as Hazel's loyal companion just tripped the Goblin and as he wanted to get up Hazel made an end to his miserable existance. He guides the Air Elemental forward as it changes into a Whirlwind engulfing the goblins ans obscuring them from sight...

The whirlwind picks up the remaining sleeper(s), then rises into the air while containing the whirling bodies, and backs away from the entrance as it ascends with its base to about 30 feet, its top at 60. (damage to those within: 3, 5, 2 - ignore the d3=1 - clicked on wrong spot)

Murphy hustles forward to AL14. As he moves he says in halfling, "Like as not they have some dogs. I've got part of one orange jar left, and I think we have another couple of them? Let's get ready in case they send them out... but who wants to go into their - what is is - a cave in the hill?"

"Hazel, I am no use fighting these creatures but you are very skilled in combat, I'm going to call upon Flower to bind us again so you can use my life force with your own and defend yourself better. Alouryn casts Shield Other entwining her energies first with Flower and then with Hazel giving him a +1 bonus to AC and saves and taking half of his damage directly to Alouryn for the next hour. Then she will wait to move as he moves staying about 10 feet behind.

Shel complements Murphy on his elemental and wonders how they will get those Goblins out of their cave... Eldon probably is somewhere in there...
Murphy further directs the Elemental as it risez ever higher with the still sleeping Goblins. He then ponders about the odds that there are more dogs inside... the jars with the orange goo might protect you from the Goblin dandruf...

Edric and Eral also hurry forward realising they need to get inside quickly... after all Eldon probably is inside and there's no way to tell how they will now treat Eldon...

Alouryn teams up with Hazel sacrificing her health should her beloved ranger get hurt in the battle that seems to be inevitable...


At the entrance all remains calm... too calm...

At this time, the elemental winks out and returns to wherever it was summoned... dropping 3 battered goblins from a height of 30-50 feet (and suffering the attendant damage from a drop from that height: 8, 8, 14).

"I... I thought it would stay around longer," Murphy say, a bit sadly, looking at the limp goblin bodies. "So much for my thought to negotiate a hostage exchange." He replies to Shel from her earlier comment, "Thanks. I want to learn the language of the air."

He takes the jar with orange paste in it. He rubs some on his hands, feet and face. "How do I look?" he asks his friends. He hands the jar over to Alouryn. "Why don't you try some, too, and Hazel? And whoever else wants to use it - until we run out."

He considers what his companions have said, then adds, "If he had a hostage or two, I'd go in Edric's direction. Since we don't, I think Shel has the right of it. If anyone can give us a blessing, that would be welcome. But let's go inside, and get Eldon back. Adomorn, can you look after my pony, Pippa? And shout if you see any other critters about!"

To the rest he says, "Be prepared for goblins and their rat-like dogs. Hazel, I'll be right behind you and Alouryn - Edric, anyone else, join us, and let's get Mister Tosscobble back!"

If Hazel, Alouryn, and the others are amenable to this, he follows Hazel and Faoil, and is either next to or slightly ahead of Alouryn (so as to help defend her, but allow her to remain near enough to Hazel). He has his sickle out, and is as ready for action as he can be.

"If Adomorn was right, we've thinned out most of the goblins, but there will be several of those also dogs in there as well. Those are what scare me. Mind if I get some of the orange stuff, if there is any left? Last thing I want is to get some sort of rash."

She scoops out a bit, takes a whiff and rubs it into her face and arms. "Interesting stuff, this is. Wonder how it tastes...well, plenty of time for that later. Let's go get Eldon."

Eral will get ready to head in with the group taking up the front of the group unless we have someone else that would like to be up front with Edric then Eral will fall to the rear to guard their backs.

With Alouryn's spell emboldening him, Hazel is ready to go into the cave only with the lovely Alouryn at his side... Alouryn reacts appreciative but she gently brings Hazel back with his feet on the ground... which the Ranger somewhat red-faces accepts..

Eral wants to make his way into the cave as quickly as possiblebut Edric wonders if they can't just smoke them out.

...thud...douff... thump...

The three sleeping Goblins fall as the Air elemental vanishes from this plain to the elemental... all three are badly bruised and battered and no longer show any signs of life... they have mercilessly been smacked to the ground breaking almost every bone in their bodies...

Murphy watches kinda in surprise. He had hoped the other Goblins would have stayed outside a bit longer to negotiate hostage exchange...
He then digs up the orange paste that can protect them from the Goblin Dog dander. Murphy first uses the paste. His face, arms and hands are bright orange once he's finished. Alouryn and Shel follow Murphy's example so after a little while they too look like oversized carrots.

(The paste protects you from the Goblin Dog Dander. Downside is your skin will remain orange for a week... )

Hazel smiles as he sees his orange friends and kindly refuses to use the goo on his own skin...

Adomorn looks after Pipa while the others assemble in front if the cave... there's a foul stench, unmistakably Goblin, coming from the lair... If you stare into the dimlit cave entrance you can see it's a natural cave tunnel... as it seems to twist a couple of feet inside it's impossible to say where the tunnel is going.

Shel considers Adomorn's words on the Goblin count... was the whole contignent of Goblins out to capture Eldon? Eral casts one extra spell on the group and then prepares to go inside.

As Murphy receives the blessing of Domi through the agency of Eral, he thinks to grab the coiled rope with the loops off the side of Pippa. "Adomorn will watch after you, girl." He then turns to the group's male cleric and says, "Thank you, Eral. Sure, go ahead with Hazel, and I'm right behind you." If someone wants to be next to him, the druid will walk along the left side of the tunnel.

As DM Steven updated his post as I was posting mine, the map and comments on it were not there when I wrote. Regarding positioning, my take is that a few rounds were spent after the two goblins retreated within as we shared the anti-itch cream and discussed things, and people were gathering at or near the entrance as this was done. Rather than speaking in the common tongue, and aside from his goblin rantings earlier, everything he has said to his friends is in the halfling tongue, as he hopes any goblins listening will not understand.

The whirlwind, having earlier backed away from the entrance as it ascended, likely dropped the goblins at or near AK15. Murphy will follow after Hazel / Faoil / Eral, passing through AQ15 and tracking along the left side of the twisting tunnel. He has a loop of rope over his shoulders around his neck, laying over his chest and stomach. His left hand holds the bag of caltrops. His right hand has a sickle. Thus laden - he will likely end up dropping something at some point, but is trying to be as prepared as he can.]
Murphy says one more thing. "If we need to put any rat-dogs down, that's fine. Let's try to leave the goblins alive, though. It will be easier to talk with them that way. Knock them out if you need to. But our old friend's life is the most important."

As he runs, he calls out in the goblin tongue (or, in whatever tongue the halting voice spoke), "If you would live, do not open pens or dogs will die. Surrender, and we talk. Fight, and you may die." [Diplomacy 4 :-)] Murphy hopes it takes a while for whoever is doing it to open the dogs' pen.

Seeing the narrow corridor on his right Eral decides to check it out to make sure there are no Goblins nor dogs hiding in there to get at their rear... it's pretty dark in there but as his eyes are getting more and more adjusted and the faint light shining in from the entrance he's pretty sure the little storage chamber is empty. Apart from some pretty stinking garbage there's nothing there... or so it seems...

While Eral checks out the side corridor Shel and Murphy hears a male voice with a serious stutter command to open the dog pens... Immediately the Halflings react and shout right back while they run forward! While you leave the entrance light you notice the corridor ahead seems to be dimly illuminated. Not much but sufficient for you all to see well enough not to be needing any extra light or torch.

"Run Ahead' Murphy shouts and in Goblin he adds they should surrender or risk their lives...
Murphy's diplomatic approach however is far from succesful and is only followed by laughter...

In Goblin the voice shouts back : "B bb be ... gg gg gege gone ... o o o o orrr r ... y y yrrr F fF ffrien nn dd d d ddd ... dai ai d dies ... "

...

Shel and Murphy run forward, closely followed by Hazel and Alouryn, untill they reach a curve in the corridor that apparently leads to a central room. You can't see around the bend yet but you can see and hear a crackeling fire somewhere in there which hears and illuminates the place. But that smell... by Domi that's a foul odor... Edric remains close to Eral considering it's indeed far safer not to split up in here.

Adomorn remains outside watching over Pipa. Faoil whines as he also hears noises coming from the cave... Adomorn ponders if he would better go in and help his new found friends or stay with the Pony like he promised. He's quite certain that this dog here... who seems to be rather witty would be perfectly capable of protecting this pony... Perhaps...

Eral hurries to catch up with his friends. Edric and Shell too follow their friends down the tunnel. Hazel drops his lamp and runs forward, Alouryn still following in his footsteps. Murphy, dispite hearing chains being opened, runs straight into the central room...

In a split second Murphy takes in the chamber. In the opposite corner a fierce looking Goblin wielding a short sword stands next to a prison cage... inside... Eldon! The Goblin, who obviously is the leader of this bunch watches you showing his rotten teeth... Next to him his dog.

There's a fire burning in the center.

Three other dogs run towards you! Goblin 1 and 2 just openend the dog pens and now unsheath their shortswords. Behind a low rock formation a Goblin stands with an arrow with Murphy's name on... Left of Murphy another archer waits. Both have 20% concealment...

Goblin 3 misses Murphy.
Goblin 4's arrow strikes true dealing 3Hp damage.

Shell, Alouryn and Hazel hurry to catch up with Murphy. Shell prepares a color spray spell ready to cast at the first one that comes in range. Murphy warns his friends about all that are waiting to attack and drops a large bag of calrops in front of him...?

Hazel takes position next to Murphy and uses his sling staff missing on of the incoming dogs - not even Alouryn's Guidance can make him hit the dogs. (I didn't consider you having a line of sight to use your range attack last turn)

Edric and Eral move up to the front fighters. Adomorn feels he can do better rather than guarding the horse. He takes Faoil and Pipa inside... it doesn't take long for him to close in on the rest...

The 3 Goblin dogs charge into Murphy and Hazel...

Dog 1 steps onto the caltrops and yelps in pain! (Hits AC20 - nat 20 - 1HP). Dog 2 is lso stopped by the caltrops (hits AC20 - nat 20 - 1HP). Dog 3 can't get close enough yet. (Rolled an attack for each caltrop)

Goblin 1 and 2 come closer wih their blades readied.

Goblins 3 and 4 both launch another arrow... G4 aims from his 20% concealed spot at Shel hitting AC19 - damge 3 Hp. G3, also 20% concealment, aims for Murphy again hitting AC 22 damage taken is 2 HP

Shel moves around her friends untill she stands face to face with the drueling goblin dogs... she throws a bit of colored sand towards dogs 2 and 3. The sand turns into a vivid cone of clashing colors knocking out the dogs... (goblin dogs 2 and 3 are unconscious for 6 and 7 rounds respectively)

Hazel aims for dog 1... only 1 sling bullet hits (GD -6 HP total)

Murphy plays a trick on the archer and pretends to fire back... he just stares ar Murphy... a drip of druel falls from the corner of his mouth... DUH...

Alouryn sticks with Hazel and aids everyon in combat with her blessings.

Edric and Adomorn hurry to get with their friends.

Eral moves close behind Shel and casts a protective spell on the Sorcerer. He intends to move towards Khadzh.

Alouryn sees he chances in using her nice whip to disarm the Goblin threatening Shel. The moment Shel moves 5 ft back, she succesfully disarms the Goblin. His sword drops to the ground... Then Shel again throws some of the colored dust making G1 drop like a bag of potatoes... unconscious for 5 turns...

Adomorn stays with Pipa and Faoil observing this new group fighting...

Goblin 2 slashes his shortsword at Eral but misses miserably... Khadzh too raises his shortsword at Eral but the Goblin Leader hasn't got a better aim...

Archer 4 regains his consciousness... nocks nother arrow and shoots at Murphy... hits AC21 dam 1HP. Like archer 4, archer 3 intends to shoot Murphy. With Khadzh dog blocking his line of sight, the Goblin repositions and then fires at Kendry again. His arrow goes wide.

Goblin Dog 1 takes another bite at Hazel but his teeth only bite a chunk out of the void...

Eral swing and seems to hit Goblin 2 for a whole 4 damage.

OOC: Does Pathfinder follow the threat radius rule? If someone moves through the 3 spaces I am facing do I get an AOO? Also, Do I have to choose where I'm facing? I'd rather attach Khadzh but that would leave G1 behind me.
(DM Steven : Two kinds of actions can provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing certain actions within a threatened square - Also you'll only get flanked when you can draw a line from one to the other opponent that goes through you so when facing Khadzh, G1 still doesn't flank you.

Shel feels the thrill of knocking out one after the other withher Color Spray spells... she moves to face Khadzh and for the third time throws some colourful dust towards the goblins... Shel's spells proove to be awesome for even the Goblin leader crashes unconscious to the ground... he's out for 4 turns... just about in time to wake up with the two unconscious dogs and Goblin 1 who's out cold also... of course Shel knows that once they are awake they'll still be blinded and stunned for at least a couple of seconds...

Eral makes a mighty swing wih his sword thouroughly shredding the Goblin's leather armor and causing a severe gash accros the Goblin's belly...

Alouryn rushes in place hoping to disarm Khadzh but he's already watching the whole Woldian Constellation...

Adomorn too grabs his bow and gets in place for some ranged supporting fire.

Then suddenly a misty vapour appears... just in front of Adomorn a thick fog just blocks all vision. (The vapor obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. Turns out the over actie Druid Murphy is responsible... after several times being hit, Murphy hopes he can get through this fight alive...

Hazel seems to be frozen by the sight of the dog that just tried to bite him... but already the dogs makes a second attempt. This time the dog comes close but his teeth only scratch Hazel's Iron Shirt a little.

G2 clings to life, raises his swoed again but fails to hit.

Khadzh dog moves 5ft forward.. through the mist he sees Shel and tries to bite her but the dog's teeth almost break from slamming his jaws onto eachother.
Archer 4 tries to see Murphy through the fog but due to the Obscuring Mist he misses a shot that therwise would have certainly hit Murphy.

Archer 3 sees little of what is going on in the mist... and you can't see him moving South towards Eldon's cage either...

Hazel's weapon does its work on the goblin dog this time, hitting AC 15 for 7 points of damage. "Adomorn, you're here?" the ranger asks in Halfling. He points in a diagonal direction down toward where the cage is. "Can you go get our friend Eldon out of the cage? Go around me - there are caltrops right in front of me."

If his blow lays low the dog, Hazel moves carefully through the next few squares to BB15, looking and, if its misty, feeling gingerly with his feet to avoid the spikes. He says, "Alouryn, I'm going to find our friend." If the dog is still moving, he will instead remain and prepare again to attack.

[Note, any creature, including a dog, that fights in one of the squares with caltrops needs to check each round to see if another caltrop was stepped upon, unless they do not move their feet at all. An attacking dog almost always moves its feet to attack. 1d20 to hit, 1 hp damage. One other exception is if a person moves at half speed, deliberately picking his way to avoid stepping upon the caltrops. Shel backs away from Khadhz's dog but isn't casting any new spells. Eral mercilessly lands his warhammer on the back of Khadzh skull... you're quite positive that the cracking sound isn't comming from Eral's hammer...

Just before Murphy runs of to finding Eldon, Alouryn calls upon her divine powers and cast a healing spell on Murphy... a daunting manouvre get's him to pass Khadzh Dog... The Dog makes an AoO vs Murphy hitting AC19 - damage 8HP... (make a DC12 Fort save vs the rash - unless if you have the orange goo on your face)

(DM Steven : perhaps not clear on the map? I did specify which Dogs or Goblines were unconscious but Khadzh Dog is alive and well... eager to plant his teeth in Murphy's behind...)

Adomorn tries to come closer but is a little distracted with the mist...

Hazel makes his weapon do the trick... he slays the dog in front of him. Then he darts through the caltrops and exits the mist South.

Goblin 4 sees littls of what is going on... but he thinks he can spot a Halfling in the mist but his aim sucks.

Goblin 3 opens the cage, drags his sword and stands next to Eldon who has his hands and feet tied and a cloth tucked in his mouth. Eldon's defenceless...

Khadzh Dog howls as he sees his boss die... he shakes his body (move action) making dander spread in a 10ft circle. All those not protected by the orange goo make a DC12 Fort save vs the itching rash.

Then the mad dog makes a 5ft step forward and attemtps to bite Alouryn but he fails...

Shel has the orange goo on, so no Fort save should be required.

Shel tries to focus herself, and cast her Acid Splash cantrip at the dog threatening she and Alouryn. Focusing mightily, she was able to cast her spell.

She fired a glob at acid at the dog. It sizzles at it strikes the dog.

Concentration check to cast defensively was 23. Ranged touch attack was 24. Damage was 3.

Murphy and Hazel run acros the dimlit room to stop the Goblin from murdering Eldon. Murphy speaks to the Goblin hoping to convince him. Murphy's words are answered with angry barks from the Goblin as he shouts : "BE GONE... OR TRADER GONE..."

 

Eral has no difficulty in resisting the dander from Khadzh's dog but none the less fails to strike the creature down. He hopes to draw the beast's attention so he leaves Alouryn unharmed.

Shel too wants to remove the Dog from this Wold's existance and throws an acid blob at it... the acid singes it's fur and makes the Dog forget about Eral's feeble attempt to harm him and instead makes the Goblin Dog focus on Shel...

 

Adomorn nocks an arrow and scans for targets. His arrow first points at Dog 1 but he sees the creature is dead already... then he turns left and through the mist he spots Goblin 1... But his aim is blurred by the mist and he fails to connect (you would normally have something like a +4 to +6 or so on your attack roll but it would still not be enough to harm the Goblin.)

 

Khadzh Dog is growling madly at Shel who wields the burning Acid... he trashes about and takes a bite out of Shel's arm (hitting AC19 damage 7 + check resistance to rash)

Goblin 4 is lost in the mist and he makes a double move south hoping to find the end of the fog somewhere... Once out of the fog he notices Murphy and Hazel rushing for the cage. Having make a double move he can'n attack.

 

Goblin 3 holds his sword near Eldon's throat... He positions Eldon between himself and Murphy and Hazel taking 50% concealment. Beware my frieds... there's a chance to strike the wrong target...

You automatically hit and score a critical hit. If the defender survives the damage, he must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or die. A rogue also gets her extra sneak attack damage against a helpless opponent when delivering a coup de grace.

Delivering a coup de grace provokes attacks of opportunity from threatening opponents.

You can't deliver a coup de grace against a creature that is immune to critical hits. You can deliver a coup de grace against a creature with total concealment, but doing this requires two consecutive full-round actions (one to "find" the creature once you've determined what square it's in, and one to deliver the coup de grace).

Roll the damage (with all modifiers) multiple times and total the results. So if your weapon does 1d4+1, with a crit of x3, you roll 1d4+1 three times and add the results together.

Repost if you were attacking a helpless opponent and want to finish him off.

Finally the obscuring mist vanishes. Now that the battlefield is visible to all you can see a lot of goblins and dogs already on the ground... you can see some of yiur friends heavily bleeding... and you can see Eldon being threathened by one of the Goblins...

Aliurryn cast a guidance spell on Eral hoping it will help him slay the dreadful dog... the dog eyes turn blank as Shel's colored sand washes over him. Eral then succesfully kills Khadzh's dog. The creature fall in the dirt leaving only some dander to gently land on it's beaten and scorched fur...

Edric follows Hazel and Murphy towards Eldon.

Having missed his first arrow, Adomorn shoots again... this time his arrow pierces Goblin 1's leather armor... a small circle of blood forms on the leather making the Goblin star at it in panic... (added a +4 to your att roll)

Worried the Goblin won't listen to reason Murphy has no other choice than to finish the Goblin... a powerful lightning arc zaps Eldon's guard. Hazel too hopesto free Eldon and attacks but already the Goblin's dead on the ground... his body somehat smoking from the lightning that struck him.


This leaves only Goblin 4 on his feet. Once the mist cleared he could see Hazel and Murphy running towards Eldon. He aims for Murphy buthe would even miss n elephant when it stood in front of him...

Near the cage Eldon looks up at Murphy. The cloth in his mouth keeps him from speaking but you can read thanks in his eyes... his hands are tied but not taking a few bruises into account he seems to be just fine.

Hazel sees the arrow pass by him and turns to see another goblin not too far from the fire. He launches in quick succession two bullets from his staff sling. The first one misses, but the second strikes the goblin in the torso. In goblin he growls, "Better give up now, kidnapper."

Only now, with the passing of the arrow from G4, does Hazel realise there's another Goblin that wanted to keep Eldon imprisoned. He rapidly throws two stones at the Goblin and though only 1 hits it's a enough to make the Goblin try to make a run for it...

Shel, Alouryn and Adomorn take in the aftermath of their raid on the Goblin lair. Shel urges his friends to take care of the unconscious Dogs and Goblin on the ground but only Adomorn acts accordingly as he slays one of the dogs. Alouryn heals Shel who has taken quite a few bites... one more would have made her meet the Grey One perhaps.

G1's slowly crawls on all fours... his weapon on the ground holding his hands in front of him hoping to orientate him... he's still blinded and stunned for another 2 rounds...

Dog 2 is killed the moment he started to wake up...

Dog 3's out for 1 more turn.

Goblin 4 drops his bow and makes a run for it... as he goes he takes out his sword. He runs 60ft towards the exit... an exit that is sadly blocked by a number of murderous Halflings.


Murphy stands next to Eldon and frees the old Trader from his bonds. He talks about how Cora missed him and how... but... Eldon interrupts him quickly...

"Sarabella... is she ok? ... where is she? ... "

Murphy turns toward the others for a moment, despite Eldon's urgent question. "See if we can capture a few without killing them!" he shouts in halfling across the chamber.

He returns his attention to Eldon. "Sarabella Lovesong? She is fine, as far as I know. We got Bingo healed up, and he took our cart back to town, said he would tell the Lady Sarabella and our mayor what had happened, with the goblins' attack and all.

"You can tell by my face and hands that we found some of the orange paste." Murphy wipes his bloody face where the dog bit it - his countenance now a mixture of orange and red.

"Anyway, the priestess told us before we left that she fears we will need a good deal of the paste fairly soon."

He looks Eldon over to see if he may be in need of healing. "You feel ready to move? Why don't you come and let us all know whatever you want us to know. We can take a quick look over this place, see if there is anything that may help us figure out what they're up to, place the goblin bodies up in the trees - that's how they like their bodies to be taken care of - then hurry back to Humble's Ford."

He considers a moment. "Unless you want us to gather more of the fixin's for the paste before we go that way."

Shel steps over to the unconscious Goblin Dog and while she casually thanks Alouryn, she mercilessly tries to kill the poor beast... but still there's life flowing through the dog's veins as he's not willing to give up that easily... Awaking the dog gently howls in pain and tries to get on its paws but for another 3 turns he is both blinded and stunned.

As Goblin 4 tries to make a run for it Eral tries to stop him from getting others but his swing goes wide. Murphy urges all to try and get at least one alive though...
Having heard it would be good to keep one alive Alouryn tries to disarm the Goblin but her whip can't get hold of the sword in his hands.

"Stop that guy! Don't let him get out! Adomorn, Eral, Shel, Sweetheart!" Hazel shouts as he makes a run for the entrance...

... sweetheart ?!? ...

Adomorn attempts to stop the Goblin as he runs past him... so far he has darted past Eral's Warhammer and Alouryn's colourful whip... but the rogue hopes to catch him bare handed...

Adomorn succesfully grapples the Goblin taking 4 HP with the maneuvre!! They both land at BB11 - the Goblin wriggeling beneath Adomorn attempting to escape next round. In front of the grappeling due Faoil stands growling waiting for the Goblin to make a move to escape... the dog almost seems to look forward to the prospect of having this creature trying to escape...

Edric too runs after the Goblin.

Back at the cage Murphy gently speaks with Eldon trying to reassure him that they left Sarabella safe and sound at home and that Bingo was asked to send notice to her and the mayor...

"... NO NO NO DEAR BOY ... We MUST hurry back! How long have we been gone?! ... Sarabella is in grave danger!! I heard this Goblin Leader saying they would take care of her... take me home lad for I fear out beloved town... " while he was ranting Eldon tried to get back on his feet but weakened by his captivity he staggers and falls back to the floor...

"Help me lad... take me home... hurry...

Feeling less than at full strength himself, Murphy tries to help ease Eldon down as he stumbles. He then takes a moment to do what he can with his meagre healing skill (heal: 11).

"We will travel back, then." As he talks with Eldon, he takes a moment to look over the goblin which was hit with the lightning arc. He did not know whether that would fell him or not, but is grateful it worked so well. He checks to see if the goblin is breathing, he listens to hear if the heart beats. Sometimes lightning might stop the heart. He takes out a small mirror and holds it to his nostrils. If there is no sign of life, he lets him lie for now. If there are signs of life, he may take additional action. He takes the sword the goblin wielded, his bow and arrows, too, checks for and relieves him of any other weapons.

He still has the looped rope over him. "I'm going to wrap this around you in a few places, and we will be bound together for support. Let me walk you over to where Alouryn is, and she will pray to Flower to help you regain your strength. She is a mighty healer."

As he helps the old man hobble across the large cavern - if such they can do together - he talks with him. "What do you suppose the goblin leader meant by saying they would take care of her? Was he talking about his own group, or another, do you suppose? Anything you can remember about what they said among themselves, their plans, could help."

I saw your question for Hazel - but over in this section of the cavern we are still in combat, and Hazel has six seconds to do what he did. Did not want to ignore your question - he is just super-focused on making sure that one fellow does not escape. So, it is up to you as to whether you want to put the rest of the dogs down. Murphy's earlier counsel was to leave a few goblins alive.

One is working on coming around... and will do so if no one constrains him while it is still easy to do.

Hint: Non-lethal damage.

Eral wonders if they should dispose of the Goblin Dogs and questions Hazel about it. Also, he makes sure whatever valuables are to be found in the cave are quickly retrieved.

Shel kills another Dog... a brutal spell rips through the animals body making it collapse to the ground shuddering in pain...

With Adomorn and Hazel now both on top of him the Goblin whines in fear and in goblin he curses the day that he joined Khadzh's group... he releases his sword...

Murphy checks if the one threatening Eldon is actually dead or just unconscious but as no condensation forms on the mirror he holds in front of the Goblin's nose he realises the poor thing is thouroughly dead...

Edric helps out Eral as he gathers all the interesting things around the cave.

Then Murphy supports Eldon trying to get out of the cave slowly. Eldon is pretty weak at the moment. He clearly didn't get much to eat or drink and whatever food he got was rotten meat and stinking bread loaded with fungi...

"We'll talk while we head to town lad... but... hurry... I'll explain as we travel home. I just fear I won't be able to walk all the way back... please help me... "

Shel will cast Detect Magic once all the threats have been neutralized, scanning the gear assembled.

Hazel uses his 50' of silk rope carefully to bind the goblin which Adomorn tackled, and asks for someone else to provide rope for tieing up the other goblin who is just now recovering from Shel's effective actions.

Each one he hobbles, so they can walk - but cannot move their feet wide enough effectively to run. Hands are tied behind the back, and separated vertically from each other by a short stick so their hands cannot work in tandem. Once they begin to travel, he will check their bonds closely during a short break typically taken every hour. Each has a lead line, so that one of the halflings will keep the goblin at hand.

As the group prepares to leave, he takes one of the goblins (#4) off out of hearing distance of the other goblin (#1). If someone wants to join him to observe the interaction, that will be fine with him (add a few sense motive rolls if you do). To #4, he asks questions along the following lines:
What is your name?
The other one we tied up - what is his name?
What plans did you [plural] have for your prisoner?
How many of your people come to this cave, and how often?
What plans were made for Sarabella?
What plans were made about halfling dwellings?
Who is another leader besides Khadzh?
What other goblin groups work with him?
Who is Khadzh working for? Who paid him?
What allies do you have besides your own kind? Besides goblins?
How many giants are helping you?
How are they helping you?
Why did you capture the trader?
What did you plan to do with him?
How many spies are in Crescent Valley?
Who are they?
If you help us, treatment will be better
If you do not help us, treatment will not be better.
After he questions the one, he will isolate and question the other in a similar fashion. If he notes a discrepancy, he may (or may not) point it out. He might do a bit of playing one off the other, if doing so seems appropriate. If either one is cooperative, he gives him something small to eat, and a few ounces of water. If one does not cooperate, he gives him nothing. In either case, he places gags in each goblin's mouth, and blindfolds them for now.

As an afterthought, just before they leave the cave area, and out of earshot of the goblins Hazel consults with Alouryn, Shel, Murphy and the others. "Let's tell them what we found in gems. Then tell them, 'If there is other treasure or things of importance hidden in this area, and you tell us, and cooperate, we will set aside a part of its value for you.'

"If they do, we might find something important we otherwise would have overlooked. If not, well, then on we go."

If no one objects, he asks this of each goblin - again, separately. He has one or two others to watch the goblins and listen as they respond. He does so inside the cave, removing their blindfolds and gags before he asks - just in case a quick glance from one might indicate where something of value may be found - whether high, low, in or near the fire, around the dog cages or Eldon's cage, or elsewhere.

He also asks Eldon if he might be aware of any such thing. "I know we need to leave, but it took over 3 days to get here, and a handful of minutes here may help a good deal."

"Thank you, Eral. That helped." (Murphy goes from 6/18 to 13/18 hit points, then adds 8 from level boost, to 21/26).

He makes certain that Eldon gets a little bit of food and water - not too much all at once, lest he get sick.

"Pippa here has a pack saddle, but, give us a few minutes, and I think I can rig up something to allow you to ride up there, too." He works at it, moving cargo, canvas and ropes around to give him a secure seat. He gives Pippa some feed, and water.

Is there water here in the lair? He is not too interested in the food they might have.

For the dogs, he suggests that, just before we leave, their bodies be stacked over the fire, making sure there is space for air between the corpses for efficient burning, using whatever random furniture, sticks, rocks are handy to do so. Last thing before exiting the cave, ensure they are burning well.

He talks quietly with goblin #4. "You have shown yourselves to be our enemies by kidnapping our friend, the trader. We do not wish to dishonor your dead, though. Among some goblins it is customary to leave their bodies in a large bush or tree, their face toward the sky, for the Raven. Do you want us to do that for them?"

If goblin #4 answers affirmatively, he enlists the aid of his friends. "Goblin bodies in bushes, face up, so birds can pluck their eyes, fly upward, and add to the wings of black Raven to make stars in the sky above."

He directs that their bodies be placed in the brush from A36 to about J36 on the map.

In goblin, he chants one of their burial chants,
"All of us now scream - ayi!
All of us now growl - gurdurr!
Our bowels churn within us,
They twist for you now gone."
"Say something short about them if you want."(OOC: If this does not confuse the goblins, I don't know what will)

He tells the goblins. "I expect you to try to escape. If you try, though, we'll probably kill you. Come without balking, do what we say, perhaps you will live." If they had earlier told of additional treasure, he adds, "You may want to eventually get your portion of the treasure you told us about to use while you are alive. Your choice."

He notes that #4 is wounded. He attempts to use his healing skills on him, but fails miserably (d20+6=7 - natural 1). Obviously there must be some aspect of goblin anatomy unfamiliar to him. "Quick! someone help heal this fellow before he dies!" he asks of Eral and Alouryn. He is most chagrined.

Once that is dealt with, the druid asks if anyone has anything else to say or do before they depart.

If not, away we go. Marching order needed.

Murphy leads Pippa in the middle of the group - at least one pair of people behind for rear defense, at least one pair in front for advance defense/recon.

Goblins - one in 2nd row, one near Pippa's left flank, as Hazel arranged - hobbled, lightly gagged, blindfolded at the beginning of the trip. Who will hold on to a rope for each? One on goblin #4, one on goblin #1.

Does someone want to try on the goblin leader's armor - masterwork scale mail? There is a very good looking short sword. Who wants to use it? Let's splits the gems between the two clerics just for the moment - 500 gp w/ Alouryn, 500 gp w/ Eral. We can break down distribution more later.

The end of a scene is a good time to make nominations for hero points. You can nominate others, you can nominate yourself. The DM will rule in each case. I can think of several recommendations, but will ask you all to do so, except for this one: Alomorn Millstone deserves a hero point for daring to tackle a guy running toward him with a sword, and preventing his escape.

Feel free to discuss via email, as well as any treasure distribution ideas. I will send a starter email right now.

Eral will go ahead and heal #4 with his heal skill (17) just to stabilize him. "Your Welcome Murph, I have no use for the sword so if anyone wants it go ahead. Lets get on the road. I will drag #4 along.

Adomorn gets up and wipes the goblin dust off of him. He looks around at the others and is happy that he was able to not kill this particular goblin and instead tackle him. He mulls about while a few ask some questions to the Goblins.
