Nothing To See Here, Folks...(Almost) - DM Donna Thursday December 12th, 2013 2:31:51 PM
The Obscuring Mist spell takes on a life of its own--the blinding fog effect swells to a larger area of effect, swirling up and around everyone in the party. What's happening..? This isn't anything that any of you intended to have happen...
In the fog, no one can see more than five feet in front of their face.
EVERYONE MUST MAKE PERCEPTION CHECKS:
DC14 or less: Wow...it sure is really foggy... DC15: Highlight to display spoiler: { You start to hear groaning from around you. They are not a voice you recognize.} DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: { The voices are changing. They are becoming more gravelly and hoarse, but just by a small amount.} DC25: Highlight to display spoiler: { You also hear a bone pop and a sharp cry of pain.} DC30: Highlight to display spoiler: { Something is happening to the invincible guards that is causing their voices to change as well as causing them considerable pain.}
What do you do???

Edson waves at the fog in front of his face trying to disipate it. Not helping he moves closer to the guard and the sounds. The guard was strong enough to take them on, so it wouldn't be a trick.
"It's the guard" he says to the group. "Something is changing his voice and causing him great pain."

Barratore sees fog, hears Peza and Edson talking, but they are making no sense at all. Barratore's mind is over whelmed at the turn of events at the Tower. Everything had been thrown into chaos. Harvest was gone, The Wold had gone mad or perhaps he had. The Rule of Rum had been violently and cowardly destroyed by assassins and murderers and those same had attacked the Cat People as well. There would be a reckoning and there would be justice done upon them
Barratore stands firm and awaits whatever was to be to be, Covered in the fog. He maintains the Enlargement as well as is guard. His adrenaline surged and his neck hairs stood on end. Gods this was exciting and he loved it.

The fog blinds the barbarian to everything around him. He can hear the sounds of his companions, but there is something else in the sounds of the fog. He lifts his sword to a "ready-to-strike" position.
"Barratore?" He shouts as the other call out their warnings. "Reach that paw of yours out so I can find ya. Need a line. Rest of you try to stay behind us. And can someone get rid of this fog?"

Voices. Changing voices. A cry of pain.
Where is she? Harvest Moon feels the light wetness in the air and knows it to be a mist or fog.
Other voices. These are recognizable. Edson Kazil. Peza. Gerox Shale. The voice of The Rager. All of these are in the mist with her. Has she returned to the tower? Or did they follow her?
Harvest Moon says nothing. Instead, after orienting herself on the axis of the Wold, Harvest Moon moves in the direction of one of the unidentifiable voices. She seeks out the voice. She moves with great stealth. Her senses are alert. It is preferable to know of things before revealing one's self.

Together Again - DM Donna Friday December 13th, 2013 10:39:06 PM
One by one, the heroes find each other in spite of the blinding conditions of the fog, and are soon in the position Gerox advised about: back to back, each of them attempting to pierce the misty veil in front of them. Only a moment or so passes when--just as mysteriously as the fog had grown into its nigh-impenetrable cloak--it thins and dissipates into wisps blown away by the the gentle breeze that has sprung up.
The sun shines brightly in the aquamarine sky. The clear light of day only seems to accentuate the surreal circumstances--wasn't just mere moments ago that the team was facing hopeless odds versus over-size, over-armed guards..? And now...
Now...
They are still there, in their large, dark armor with spikes and halberds...but they are not so imposing now. In fact...as you all look, you see that the main pair of guards--the ones who had originally dismissed your presence and barred you entry to the Tower with crossed pole arms--are still there. However, their darkly polished armor is no longer malevolently perfect.
They are...rusting. And looking as though they struggle to even stand upright, moaning, groaning and wheezing as they lean more and more heavily on their halberds.
"No...no entry..." gasps one, his voice hollow within his helmet.
"Go...a-bout...your...b...b...busi...nessssss..." the other guard attempts to sound as implacable and stern as he originally had, but his voice, too, lacks vitality.
What do you all do..?

The uncontrollable spell disperses just as quickly as it had erupted, revealing the struggles of the once-invincible guards...
"Uh, they look like they need help."
That seems ridiculous, considering that they are apparently working for true villains... but moments ago they could have easily killed several of the party. Yet they showed restraint... Now they are the vulnerable ones. Zalmay wonders if they are paying the price for their unnatural display of prowess. Is this the side effect of some kind of magical boost?

Initial Investigation - DM Donna Saturday December 14th, 2013 1:12:40 PM OOC: Bonus Saturday Post!
The sorcerer acts upon his curiosity about the paradox that is presenting itself to the party, casting his spell to see what he can see...and he is astounded by the results:
The magical auras--even right after casting the spell--glow as they normally do after this divination is cast, but then they morph from their usual (nimbusi? nimbuses?) of various colors and intensities into decayed versions of their normal selves. It is horrifying and yet fascinating to see: normal magic auras appearing to "boil up" and develop ugly, black-edged holes in them--holes that quickly grow and consume the auras themselves.
Zalmay once recalled hearing about some other-dimensional world that supposedly had a device that used a quaint process to project moving pictures on a screen, and that this "projector" could sometimes malfunction so that the pictures would become stuck and then appear to bubble up and melt because of the heat of the lamp used to light up the images. He thought to himself that the process of the projector meltdown probably looked a LOT like what he was seeing happen to the numerous and powerful magic spells that had been bolstering the guards.
Horrible.
Fascinating.
Even as the Half-Orc struggled to find the words to explain what he was witnessing to the other members of the party, the guards barring entry to the Tower lurch in place, listing at odd angles before tumbling to the ground, their speech slurred and burbling nonsense as they land, their arms and armor shedding flakes of rust as they hit the ground.

Different. The same. Neither is as important, though, as the opportunity that now presents itself.
"The way is clear. We may now enter." So says Harvest Moon as she proceeds into the tower. Even beneath her baggy robes her stride reflects her determination. "We will have answers," she says.

Making them sick instead of strong. It's almost as if the magic auras are... rotting. I have no idea if this was some mistake by the caster or if somebody else is interfering..."

The consensus is for the party to go up the stairs, and so they do. Tiptoeing up the staircase only adds to the air of paranoia as the preternatural silence frays nerves. Still, the group makes it to the upper level without incident, and they find the open galleria-hall follows the curve of the tower.
There are three doors along the wall to their right, with another staircase that leads up to another level of the Tower. In order, the PCs would encounter Door 1 (closest), Door 2 (a set of double doors), Door 3 (a single door about four feet wide) and then the Stairs Going Up.

Nothin' to See Here--NOTHIN' to See..! - DM Donna Thursday December 19th, 2013 2:42:16 PM
ASSUMING THE PARTY HAS SPOILED THE DM'S FUN AND ELECTED TO ALL CHECK OUT THE GROUND FLOOR FIRST:
The very wise choice to make sure that the door isn't trapped or anything yields the fact that there is nothing to discover for that aspect. The door is carefully opened to reveal what appears to be a room about fifteen feet square and set up as a kind of reception area, gently illuminated by an unseen source of light, as there is no window in this room.
There is another door opposite the entrance (closed and made from carved oak.) To the east and south of the door is a desk with some decor on it, along with what appears to be a ledger (or some other bound journal-type book) and a comfy-ish chair oriented to face the door by which the party entered. Scattered around the space are pieces of art--an-almost-lifesized stone statue of a beautiful Elven sorceress in the midst of casting a spell, a large ceramic pot with an oversize fern in it, and a painting or two on the walls (their related themes seem to be spellcasters working their crafts.)
The set-up reminds you of the antechamber for a solicitor's office one might find back in Plateau City or any other large, civilized town...only it is missing an attentive receptionist manning the station.
Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF15; CMD 23; HP HP 57/57) - Al Thursday December 19th, 2013 4:03:51 PM
Never has Harvest Moon seen the likes of this room. (Then again, never has she ever met a solicitor.) The door at the other side of the room is intriguing, but she leaves it, for the moment, for Edson Kazil to perform his examinations upon.
It is the book to which Harvest Moon goes. The ledger (or other-wise bound journal-type book) is of great interest. It is a very elegantly bound book, and it instills within Harvest Moon the desire to add it to her library. But it is a book that does not belong to her, so with great curiosity, she merely opens it to read the contents.

The entire reception room is quickly and carefully inspected.
Harvest Moon finds that the nicely-bound book is a blank appointment journal with pre-printed headings on the pages for Date, Visitor, Reason for Visit and Time.
Edson quickly assesses the value of the decor (not uber-expensive, but not too shabby, either), and then he assesses the other door for traps. There is nothing untoward about this newest door that he can detect.
Zalmay and Peza take care to inspect the statue, too. Just as Edson had already had appraised, they find that it's a very nicely-wrought piece of sculpture of an Elven sorceress in the midst of casting some spell. The proportions on the statue make the piece only perhaps three-quarters of a "real life size" Elf, though. The Half-Orc senses nothing magical about the statue at all.
Everyone else does support snooping, and the conclusion is that this reception/office is merely a reception/office.
However...there IS that non-trapped-as-far-as-Edson-is-concerned Other Door in the room...

Doors - DM Donna Monday December 23rd, 2013 1:42:16 PM DOWNSTAIRS: The other door opens into a larger room that has windows overlooking what is likely to be a nice courtyard space once it is landscaped. Right now it is a mostly bare, though what little grass there is does have a nice healthy green color. The room itself is set up as though it is the office of some professional person: large desk, upholstered chair for whomever the office holder may be, a couple of smaller but still comfy chairs facing the desk and a tall leafy plant in one corner.
The desk itself is not fancy but it looks well-constructed (anyone who can make an Appraisal skill check versus DC12 Highlight to display spoiler: {you can tell that in spite of its "non-fancy" look, the desk is very high quality--and such a piece would have been extremely expensive not only to buy but to have shipped to Crescent Island.} There is a blotter and a quill-and-ink-bottle set on top of the desk.
UPSTAIRS: Without touching the door, Gerox's peeking can tell him that he's looking into a fairly large room--the far wall seems to be maybe thirty feet away?--and there is a single boot lying on its side that he can just BARELY catch sight of...an armored boot, of which he can juuuuust see the bottom sole and toe.

It may be of greater utility to draw people to them through noise, rather than to sneak quietly about through empty rooms. It is curious that one of the three doors on the second floor is ajar by about a half-inch or so. But this may be an indicator of many things, none of which makes the number two door any more compelling than any of the others in so far as confronting a presence in the tower is concerned.
And it is interesting that there is no response to the call of Barratore Steelwind. It is as though there is either no one present within this tower, or they are in hiding.
"You are searching for harmful devices upon these doors, are you not?" asks Harvest Moon of Edson Kazil. "From the things we have seen of this building so far, it seems unlikely that there would be such things here." With those words, the small half-elfish girl sets about testing her theory by throwing the doors open, beginning with the nearest one and proceeding to the double doors, and finally jerking open the last door that lies nearest the stairway continuing up.
Harvest Moon considers the things she has read and seen with regards to the construction of buildings such as this. It is not so unknown to build stairs that rise to only a large landing or hallway such as this. But it is more common for buildings of shared usage, places of work where areas such as these are only for transit. If the building were in use, few would linger in such a place as this. Rather, they would go to the rooms or offices. In the rooms or offices, they would conduct their work. They would have personal things of comfort. It is in the rooms or offices that they would spend their time. (See knowledge check.)

Look...CLUES! - DM Donna Monday December 30th, 2013 1:47:48 PM OOC: okay...not waiting on Hert & Barratore to post...
Edson finds no traps.
Harvest Moon goes to the door closest to the stairs that ascend to another, higher floor and yanks it open--revealing a room that looks just about large enough to hold perhaps two people. There is a tiny, crescent-shaped window high up on what must be the outer wall, as sunlight and fresh air seem to stream through it. Within the tiny room itself is a washstand with a bowl and pitcher. Opposite the washstand is a well-crafted chair that resembles a mini-throne...only there's a big hole in the seat and what looks to be a chamberpot beneath the hole.
Gerox cautiously pushes open the door, and Brom steps over/by him to enter the chamber first...
The mystery room is big and devoid of furniture save for a large throne-like chair at one end...and another desk and chair that Barratore passes to go into the place. The proportions of it remind you of a meeting hall or, perhaps, a small ballroom that may have utilized a "check-in table" near the entrance. There are large windows that look out upon the cityscape, giving a nice view--or it will once a few more of the residential buildings and individual small businesses are built up and filled in. The overall feel of the space is that it isn't quite finished yet--it lacks velvet curtains on the windows, some frescoes and perhaps the crowning touches of a few pieces of statuary and/or tall plants in the corners or the like.
However, near the throne are two large objects: one of them is an armored body that resembles the oversize guards that had once blocked entry into the tower before they all aged, withered and blew away like dust in the wind. There ARE differences, though: the armored body is not huge--it's the size of a burly human being.
It's also missing its head--oh, no, wait...the head seems to have rolled off into a far corner.
The second thing that is lying on the ground is another body. Armored as his companion, he has HIS head, but his wide-eyed stare in a palid face with blue lips confirm that he, too, is just as dead. There is a bloodied bastard sword on the floor next to him, and he grips in one fist a piece of vellum.
Sitting between them is an item glowing white-hot. It is a two headed totem pole looking like it was broken off of the remaining part of the totem which would have been below it. The top head is that of a buzzard and the bottom head that of a bloated red demon complete with horns. Even as the party looks upon the bizarre figure, the light it emits flares brighter--so that everyone instinctively shields their eyes.
As quickly as the light flared up, it fades, leaving behind a rapidly-cooling formless mass of slag with no identifying features.
And silence. LOTS of silence...

There is no dust nor dirt, so footprints cannot be detected. Everything within the building has only been very recently built and furnished.
Still, everyone who has done their best to be observant and try to find even the smallest hints of what on Yrth has happened can find nothing else in the room with the bodies and the now-rapidly-cooling lumpy mass between the two corpses.
Of course...there IS that crumpled piece of vellum clutched in the grip of the body with the blue lips. No magic auras are in the room any longer...although Edson is pretty sure that the blue-lipped corpse was poisoned, as he manages to spot a vial on the ground near the body.

The vellum bears writing in a strong hand:
The Tri-bar are no more. The City of Rum was to be ours! We would have been greater than the Mailed Fist! Richer than the Dragon Consortium! All this planning for naught. Curse both the Fixers and the Woldian League of Adventurers forever!
Then scribbled underneath in a different and hurried style:
Perhaps this confession will help me with my placement in the afterlife:
Baun and I planned to take over Rum, but I killed him upon learning of the failure of our ultimate plan. I am responsible!
Issichus

The keen ears of Harvest Moon can pick up many things. The conversational voices of the other League Adventurers are easy to pick out. What is most interesting, however - even more interesting than the words that they speak - is the tone of the voices. The terse tones of danger have faded to be replaced by questioning and puzzlement.
For a moment, the slight half-elven girl considers the names spoken by Gerox Shale. Curious names. The names, possibly, of Beastlords? And yet, the crimes perpetrated today do not have the feel of Beastlords.
There is yet another stairway that rises to yet another floor. By now, Harvest Moon is fairly well convinced that this tower is devoid of all things, living or otherwise, that might present a danger. Quickly and quietly, she climbs the stairs that lead to the floor above.

Curiouser and Curiouser - DM Donna Friday January 3rd, 2014 1:04:48 AM Gerox and Harvest Moon search their respective memories regarding the names Issichus and Baun. They both seem to recall the names as those of a merchant and a shipowner (respectively). Issichus was amongst the merchants who was able to maintain rather timely shipments of raw metals and manufactured building supplies (especially nails and pegs) by way of the Taur Isles. Baun, was one of the shipowners that aided Issichus is making sure the carpenters that assisted the efforts of the Fixers to construct the buildings of Rum.
Of course, as the party had been preoccupied with straightening out the situation regarding the Cat People, there is no doubt more to whatever happened with Issichus and Baun, but those parts are unknown to them...at least for the moment.
Gerox is pretty sure that Issichus' poison was self-administered.
Cautiously probing as they seep the tower, the group finds no traps. The majority of the rooms they check out have a minimum of furniture, although what furniture they find IS of rather good quality, with the odd desk, chair, bed and/or decorative statue giving the same impression as had the office desk on the ground floor: those occasional pieces are unique enough that it would have cost a fortune to have them shipped to Rum this early in the city's development.
The explorations seem to indicate that the tower had reception rooms and offices for individual people on the ground floor; public facilities (the large meeting hall/throne room; a slightly smaller banquet hall with a kitchen; the interior bathroom and a smaller meeting room) on the next floor up; a series of rooms that looked to be a billet for guards along with a half-a-dozen or so private bedrooms on the highest floor. It is on that uppermost story that a few more piles of metal-and-bone dust may be found.
Nobody other then the party members is alive. There are no other books, tomes and/or documents in the place that can give the PCs more clues...the whole place gives one the feeling that--whatever this tower's ultimate goal had been--the entire place had only just been set up...only just have gotten to the point where armored guards had taken up residence here.

A smile touches the lips of Harvest Moon as she hears the others following her up the stairs. It is, though, as she'd expected. The tower is empty. Further, it has no more tales to tell.
"I think that you are right, Peza," says Harvest Moon to her human friend. "But ... "
All things die ...
" ... did we not bury Captain Sal Theringer?"
That is all that she says. The remainder of her thoughts are writ plain upon her face. With a heart laden with the things that she knows Rum has lost today, Harvest Moon descends the stairs, leaving behind this dark and empty place of the Would-Be governors of Rum for the compound of the Woldian League of Adventurers.

The Business of Living - DM Donna Monday January 6th, 2014 5:22:37 AM
As the League Adventurers reflect on their perceptions of late, they all confirm to each other the truth as they know it so far:
1. Sal Theringer did die, unfortunately. Although the more fanciful (or, perhaps, wishful?) amongst your group swear they thought they heard Theringer's voice even as the party approached the tower, all of you come to the conclusion that it must have been imaginations running a little wild.
2. Looking into who owned the tower has a chance of bearing more than one type of fruit--not just finding out whether there are other people connected to it, but also the possibility of being able to acquire the place as a base of operations for your group. Ooooo....interesting...
3. Returning to the WLA compound is probably a good idea, too--if only to find out the state of the Rum chapter of the organization as well as hopefully getting more answers to this very strange turn of events.
Now all the group needs to do is figure out what they want to do first...
Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF15; CMD 23; HP HP 57/57) - Al Monday January 6th, 2014 8:45:27 AM
It is almost as if it is a different place, the compound of the Woldian League of Adventurers. It seems smaller now, somehow, surrounded as it is by the Rum that has risen up around it. The eyes of Harvest Moon take it all in as she approaches from up the street. Her eyes, they narrow, as they slide to the compound of Scully's Heroes that sits across the way. For the briefest of moments, she considers shouting to them that it is now safe to emerge from hiding. But, it is perhaps better for them to remain within and out of the way, she decides in the end.
Harvest Moon pauses at the gate, her eyes scanning the interior of the compound. Her small garden lies neglected to one side. It too seems so much smaller now - a pitiful thing, out of place, living on the margins near one wall. It is then that Harvest Moon makes her decision. The idea of Gerox Shale is sound. But a dark tower is no place for her. She will claim her own land. She will build her own home. There is land near the dock of the gnome ferryman, Adva Carlin. It is near the water, and many interesting peoples must pass by there daily to use the ferry. That would be a good place.

A Brew or Two - DM Donna Tuesday January 7th, 2014 5:39:30 AM Harvest Moon contemplates becoming a landowner...and her garden isn't looking all that bad, really...perhaps a bit overgrown, but otherwise healthy--as though the plants in it are too stubborn to just give up and let the city-oriented environment have its way.
Edson gives Zalmay a bit of advice that the Half-Orc opts to not enact at the moment.
Hert silently contemplates the day's events and their implications.
Peza proposes that the group goes to find the WLA member in charge...which doesn't seem to do much (if anything) to stem the flow of brew, as Brom sets the scene for a well-deserved celebration of life--the League Adventurers did a lot to earn the miracle that ultimately kept them all from a trip to the hall of Gargul.
OOC to Brom: what is this "cursed wounds" your posts keep referring to?
Peza's inquiries to any of the other handful of combat-weary WLA recruits that drift into the compound from other areas of the city meet with shrugs and/or battle-fatigued stares, though one limping Elf waves one of the pair of short swords she's wielding towards the large tent that still serves as the WLA Headquarters, mumbling something that sounds like "Artus" before stumbling on to the one of the two actual structures of the compound--the first structure is the stable for the various mounts of WLA members, but it is towards the second structure she shuffles: a simple, rectangular hall where a bunch of the tents used to be.
Your guess would be that the WLA elected to start building at least one barracks before constructing the main building...

There is much work to be done. Harvest Moon sets her hands upon her hips and sets her round face in a look of determination. However, she cannot help but notice the gathering created by The Rager. From the cluster of clay mugs she selects one that is smaller than the rest. Its handle is flawed, misshapen at the top in a way that is endearing to Harvest Moon. It makes the mug unique. Into this mug, she pours an ale that froths with a head of white foam.
The small and deceptively frail seeming girl from the Contested Kingdoms looks up at most of the other League Adventurers who tower at least a head and a half above her. (Except for Gerox Shale.) She studies them with her exotic half-elven eyes. Then she raises her mug.

The ale tastes of grains and brings to mind golden, sunlit fields, tall with such grains, that she had passed on her way from the Contested Kingdoms to Plateau City. It is a pleasant memory, and brings a faraway smile to the lips of Harvest Moon. But it also brings to mind the work that must be done.
Taking her mug with her, Harvest Moon wanders to her garden. With a practiced eye she catalogs the plants, noting which seeds she will have to take with her. As she wanders the garden, Harvest Moon absently runs a hand over her head, feeling the soft fuzz of mouse-brown hair that has begun to grow back. She would also have to shave it once again. All except the crest of hair that grows out from her forehead.

The peas are surprisingly healthy. The plants are almost lush, and they are laden with pods. Harvest Moon squats to pluck a pod from low on one plant. With strong even teeth she tears off the end and spits it out. The soft and even skin of the first pea peers from the opening, a paler green than the outer husk. Harvest Moon raises the pod once again to her mouth and sucks a few peas out. They are fresh and sweet.
Moving through the rows, she gathers pods of peas into the lap of her robe. Then, her arms filled with bounty, Harvest Moon returns to the party.
"Greetings, Navigator Artus Morindim," she calls to the halfling as Harvest Moon spills the near bushel of pods gathered in her robe onto a nearby table so that all may partake. "Please, have one." She presents a pod to the navigator of the SeaSprite and demonstrates how to bite off the end and suck the peas down fresh. "Have you come to stand at the grave of Captain Sal Theringer?"

But First...A Toast - DM Donna Thursday January 9th, 2014 2:12:18 PM
The new arrival accepts the drink with a smile and a nod, but before he can do anything with the beverage Harvest Moon arrives with her unexpected bounty, sharing the fresh food with everyone. Artus takes a peapod in his free hand but, instead of following the monk's demonstration, holds it and the mug up a bit, looking from one to the other in a way that seems but sad and amused.
"The Captain in a nutshell," the halfling says suddenly. "On the one hand, he was a free spirit and yet knew the value of hard work as well as a good brew...but on the other hand, he also appreciated the things the earth can produce, from greens like this, to the tribes of different sorts of people from which all kinds of adventurers can come." Artus opens the peapod the way Harvest Moon demonstrated and sucks the tender legumes down, then raises his mug.
"To Captain Theringer!" he says in a toast. "A stalwart leader, a most surprising man...and one of the best friends I'll ever have. May Gargul judge you true, my friend..!" Artus puts forth his mug to clink with anyone else who joins in the toast.

"Yes, of course captain". Barratore says in reply to Artus. The fighter refills his and Brom's mugs so the third toast can be completed. The fighter stands and upon Artus' completion of the toast, he brings his tankard down to the level of all and plants his other hand upon the table with a great Crack! "To The captain!"
Barratore refills his and Broms now empty mug again.
Barratore takes a handful of the pea pods, though Barratore does not perform any dissection of the plant. He simply tosses several in and chews. The bitter first bit, being quickly overtaken by the sweeter insides. "These are really good Harvest, fresh always hits the spot". Barratore washes them down with a great slug from his drink.
Settling back down, he waits for the talking and planning to commence. There was likely a great deal of things to be done, and so the fighter would listen and see what roles would be assigned to him.

Gerox turns to Hert and asks, "You follow Gargul. Doesn't he have sway in these matters. Could you bring him back?"
Gerox reaches forth and grabs a pod and carefully peels it, freeing the peas, he lines them up like soldiers on the table before him and using his fire ability quickly roasts them. Harvest Moon (AC19/Touch18/FF15; CMD 23; HP HP 57/57) - Al Friday January 10th, 2014 8:33:29 AM
Harvest Moon removes the mug from the pocket of her robe. And though it is empty now, she still raises it, along with the others, in honor of Captain Sal Theringer.
"All things die, Gerox Shale." With a quizzical look Harvest Moon eyes the gnome, as though searching his countenance might gain her some insight into the request that he has just made. It is the order of things that all things must do so. Things must die to make way for things that are born." Harvest Moon raises up on her toes, and with her arms describes a big circle.
"Captain Sal Theringer died in the service of Rum, defending the lives of others. He leaves behind no family of which I know. How is it that you know it would be his wish to be brought back from Gargul's realm? Ask yourself for whose sake it is that you wish Captain Sal Theringer brought back? Is it for his? Or is it for your own?"
All things die.
The words recall to Harvest Moon her mother, buried in the Contested Kingdoms. For all her life -or, at least the life in which Harvest Moon had known her- she had been feeble of mind and ill equipped to care for herself. She is at peace now. Gargul's realm is a better place for her.
Or so says Harvest Moon to herself. And yet, she is not so unaware of her own self not to see that these words need to go further to convince her of their truth.
After speaking with Gerox Shale, she goes to stand by her friend Peza. If the Woldian League requires aid of her, she intends to answer their call first. If not ... there is much work yet to be done.
Oh...Hello! - DM Donna Friday January 10th, 2014 9:43:19 AM OOC: Theringer was human? That's not clear in the notes I was given...dang it. Ah, well. The true upshot is that Theringer was well-respected and is no longer amongst the living. Now--on to the question & answers session...
Artus swallows his drink and puts down his mug.
"Captain Theringer's personal wishes were that he not be resurrected," the halfling addresses Gerox's concerns. "He believed that to fall in battle was the best way for a member of the League to die and he didn't want to mess around with that. Besides...the Fixers have been using any and all of their abilities to revive the dead to bring back the majority of their own corps. They'll be busy with that for a bit." He sighs, rubbing a tired hand across his tired face.
"So, that's the good news in all of this--even after that terrible attack, eventually most of the Fixers will be returned to the living Wold," Artus says, "Hopefully even Stormrager, but there is no guarantee of it." He shifts in place, his gaze resting upon Peza and the expectant faces of the rest of the group, blinking.
"Oh...I only just realized that I don't know all of you..." he gives a short laugh--more of a bemused huff, really, "...I am Artus Morindim, second--" The halfling catches himself, then adds quietly: "--temporary Leader of the Rum chapter of the Woldian League of Adventurers. And YOU are...?" He looks expectantly at those whom never met him before, awaiting their response.

"I'm sure you're all just as curious about what in The Wold just happened today," Artus says, "None of you asked, but I can see the question in your eyes, so I'll tell you what I know so far: Theringer had received some reports of rumors just last night about how there were rumbles of dissatisfaction amongst some of the merchants. He was in the middle of deciding whom he was going to assign to find out more when...when this attack happened." The navigator's curly head shook in disbelief.
"I suppose that's just one more thing we're going to have to do, then," Artus says, "Assign some members to find out if anyone has been complaining and whether or not they have real issues. Artus tugs absentmindedly on one of his curls as he thinks. Comings and goings to the island have been ever increasing, but the second fleet has not not arrived yet. We are still preparing for their arrival...I almost wish they had arrived and that we could place the blame of recent events on their shoulders. It would be a more pleasant thought than believing there are merchants in our fair city who were behind the attack.
Feeling the halfing has no more to say, Barratore begins turning to leave when the navigator begins speaking again in a much more somber tone. There is one last matter to attend to before you take your leave. It appears that before his untimely death Theringer bequeathed part of his possessions to you. He then retrieves a wooden chest bound in brass with several small purses inside. One by one he read your names from a scroll before handing you a small pouch containing a variety of coins and gems valued at 7,000gp. As he hands them to you he say Theringer also left you this message. As you spend this gold do not remember the wealth I left you, but remember instead a legacy of honor and courage. Artus takes his time in answering Gerox question. It may be some time until we know the extent of the losses of today. Several of our members are as of yet unaccounted for, but the body count so far has been remarkably low. As you may remember several of our senior members were dispatched to deliver invitations across the Wold. We are quite weakened at the moment, but I pray to the gods that many will return. When dawn breaks and the gods have renewed their blessings and the wizards have reviewed their tomes you can bet we will start trying to track down those missing from our ranks. In the mean time, rest well, toast the fallen, and pray Gimp leads their souls to Gargul and he finds them to have been men of honor.
Changing his tone he adds, As for where we are politically, the WLA have always been more than mercenaries. We are men of honor and adventure. Honor...that is the key word. You fought bravely and the people trust you. Trust us, and it is the fate and trust of the people that give an organization power. What we do with that trust in the near future may very well shape the political landscape in Rum.
Speaking of which, it would be prudent to visit the Catacombs in the morning. We need to be prepared for anything. I am sure you are not the only one wondering who the power in Rum is.

You find yourselves overcome with emotion at Theringer's generosity and forethought, and despite your best attempt to choke back the emotion, by the end of the evening many eyes are wet and red. The night is full of tales of his deeds and toasts in his memory. After the third toast a tall man wearing a silver cloak with three overlapping silver circles contained withing a third circle, the traditional symbol of Alemi approaches the group with tears in his bleary eyes. With the after affects of Barratore's constant refilling of her mug ... the bleary eyed girl shuffles to breakfast .. eating slowly at first till her stomach finds its equilibruim .... then with some gusto ..
Taking a little more time to recover the raven haired girl muses over what to buy for her trip to the catacombs ....

Edson has had worse nights drinking, but he is still beat up when he heads to breakfast. He slaps some bacon and eggs on his plate. He dives in and eats his fill.
"Anyone else gonna head to the catacombs? I plan to after we eat."

Barratore Steelwind (Dan K) AC: 20 (T 12 FF 16), CMD: 25; HP: 73/73Character Sheet Thursday January 16th, 2014 11:58:48 PM
Barratore thunders a "here, here" with the Alemi cleric and puts down a fifth, and then a sixth and at some point in the night, he looses track. The fighter rolls out of his bed, and takes a moment or four to try and recall how he made it back to it. Shaking his head clear and putting the nearest drink down his throat, the young minotaur is quickly ready for another day.
Barratore heads for food and begins to devour all he can find. Sober was not really a goal, but a slightly clearer head was needed to get himself through the catacombs. The money Theringer left him was all going into his defenses. With Hert assuming more duties that would not allow him to travel, not getting pounded seemed the better way to go than trying to repair the wounds as they came.
Brom the Barbarian - RichP; AC: 19 (T 12, FF 19, Raged 17), CMD: 25 (27 Raged); HP: 53/78 (67/92 Raged); DR 1/- Friday January 17th, 2014 12:41:33 AM
Brom continues to drink until it's time to collapse.
The next morning he wakes and makes his way to breakfast. What a breakfast. Brom gorges himself while listening to morning conversation.
"I'm heading there just as soon as my head clears a bit. The staff is a little too much to handle on a hangover."
Harvest Moon (AC20/Touch19/FF16; CMD 24; HP HP 57/57) - Al Friday January 17th, 2014 8:58:28 AM
Harvest Moon wanders into the compound of the Woldian League of Adventures after having visited the Catacombs store. She was fortunate, she thought, to find them open so early in the morning, as most of the other shops and businesses about seemed still shuttered for the night. Her head is once again freshly shaved, save for the single lock of mouse-brown hair that dangles from her forehead, and, occasionally, down into her eyes.
The half-elfish girl grasps a thick, warm link of sausage in her small fist, heedless of the grease that runs over her skin. From one end she tears a bite of the spiced meat. She had scavenged a meal of wild leeks and fresh water crab not long after waking. But it was always a pleasurable treat to have some savory sausage. Though, in truth, it was still a bit odd to live with so much bounty. Not a year ago she would have been stunned to see so much food piled together in one place, unguarded and free for the taking.
Harvest Moon finds her friend Peza and tells her of her evening spent by the waters that separate the city from the main island of Rum. There had been a high spot with a tree atop it. It was within sight of the Ferry Dock, and not too far from the water. There, she had made her camp.
"From there, I might guard the approach from the island," Harvest Moon adds.

The sun hurts his eyes. It hurts his ears. He'd never known that the sun could make a painful noise... but Zalmay has never been quite this hung over before. He picks at his food, not yet sure if his tender stomach is up to the challenge...
The Catacombs? Some place dark and cool? That sounds awfully good, but...
"Nothing for me in the Catacombs. I didn't get a share of that bounty. Of course I did nothing to earn it."
DM James Friday January 17th, 2014 8:10:28 PM
After filling up your bellies the League Adventurer's head to the Catacombs. Zalmay admires the wares, but purchases nothing. Having joined the group after Theringer's death he realized there was no way Theringer set aside gold for him, and besides, judging by the appearance of the others arms he was sure he was better off than the others.
It is a short walk to the Catacombs, and you find the building cool and dimly lit. Several shop keepers stand behind the desk, including a grumpy janitor washing the floors with an adamatine mop, a tall doppelganger, a small kobold, and the enormous shop owner...a pale faced large vampire named Dhampir. One by one you try on armor and swish swords through the air, many of which are far out of your price range, while Gerox looks at the various potions and ponders the best way to fill in for their missing healer.
After making your purchases the group goes their separate ways to visit friends, find lookout points, and make various other preparation.
ooc: We are moving on on Monday, please make any purchases by then.

Edson takes in the smells of the city while walking to the catacombs. The city always eased his mind, usually on a rooftop in the middle of the night, staying away from the prying eyes of the guards. His mind snapped out of its wandering as he neared the catacombs.

There was still monies to be had from the sale of the Three Bar mercenaries. Perhaps she would use those funds to build her home. Perhaps with the aid of the Fixers. She had some knowledge of construction. Perhaps a structure of three levels, built about the tree, both above the ground and below. Much room would, of course, have to be given to the tree and both its branch and root system. Perhaps the tree could be convinced to grown in such a way to become part of the structure.
