Upon getting into the carriage you find your goblin prisoner is there already lightly but securely bound and gagged and attached to the floor of the carriage by a 3-4 foot chain so he has enough freedon of movement to recline and get comfortable but cannot get to the rear door.

On the first part of the journey (Cue America>> You were looking at all the rocks. There were plants and birds and rocks and rings.....) you get into the rythm of the carriage and in actuality the ride is not too bad. There is time for conversation and you can even get a bit of rest as you move along. After about 5 hours of travel with one stop to rest and water the horses, you can tell that it is beginning to darken a bit outside and soon the carriage comes to a stop. Moments later Oakleaf comes to the door and gives it a quick knock. We have reached where we are going to camp this evening.

When you climb out you find you right in the middle of what appears to be a grove of 30-30 fairly old trees, probably the remains of part of the Culverwood before it was cleared and cut. The area is obviously well used as a campsite and an overnite as there are a number of evenly spaced old fire pits on either side of the road.

The six guards take care of their horses quickly and then begin to set up camp, as the carriage driver takes care of four horses and starts getting out geer that appears to be cooking stuff. Oakleaf begins wandering the perimeter of the area where you all will be camping, stopping at each of the cardinal points as well as each or the ordianl points. It looks like perhaps he is setting some sort of wards in place.

After the camp is set and the food is underway the guards are relaxing a bit while they wait for dinner to be finished and some light natured teasing begins. Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary but at occasionally the comments seem to be really not very nice and seem to really trigger an unfriendly response. This is true of about four of the guars and the carriage drive. while two other gurds and Oakleaf seem to just be enjoying watching and listening.

Hazel gets tired of Alouryn crying.
"Alouryn, I think you are a nice gal, but drop it! I mean, all that "flower" act is nice, but out here, in the wilds, life is hard, and it's a matter of eat or be eaten. There are even flowers that eat insects, if you can believe it. So it's silly to think all is pink and we can wish no harm will ever come to anyone if we all are nice. There is evil out there. There is danger. So you need to toughen off, or you are going to end like Sarabella."

Along the way
Murphy talks with his friends. He also ungags Dzurs after getting him to promise not to yell out or try to hurt anyone - including himself. "I've got some food and water for you." If the goblin does decide to raise a ruckus, he will replace the gag.

During the first let of the journey, he asks each friend a question: "What is your greatest regret in life?" and "What is your greatest hope in life?"

At the campsite
"This is a beautiful little grove," Murphy remarks. He observes attentively Oakleaf's actions. He asks, "Is that some sort of protective spell you placed? What is it called?"

[Are the guards all halflings? If so, it's unusual for them to be riding full-sized horses - or are they ponies?]

He offers to help the cook with some chores, makes sure he gets his name, and tries to pick up the names of the other guards by what they call each other.

As he notes some of the acerbic comments, he lets them pass for now, unless they insult Shel or Alouryn.

"So, how did you come into the service of the Baron?" he asks the cook / driver as he helps him with meal preparation.

At the "greatest regret" and "greatest hope" questions Hazel keeps silent.
Murphy realizes the biggest regret his friend has is that he never was able to confront his real family, the one that abandon him. He has been never able to go to them and ask: Why?
And at the greatest hope he furtively looks towards Alouryn and turns deep red, but keeps silent.

Shel was still a bit miffed. She, too chose not to respond to Murphy's questions about hope and regret. It'd only come off harsh, wondering why he'd think of something like that when they were chained in the back of a wagon.

However, after the strange wards were set up at camp, Shel decided she wanted to talk after all. "My biggest regret? Oh, I don't know. How about being in a group accused of murder and chained to the back of a wagon? That's a good start on my regrets list. I also regret watching Hazel and Alouryn make eyes at each other for over a week now. He likes her...she likes him. Either deal with the owlbear in the room, or quit pining away for each other! I don't know how either of you can deal with the other for more than ten seconds, but that's not my problem. The rest is driving me crazy!"

Shel is still smoldering, just waiting for someone else to say something mean and hurtful.

OOC: Shel was in a bad mood anyway, lol. Failing that save has set her off!

Murphy old grove campsite (Kim McCoy)

Murphy notes the nasty comments of the guards, and now his friends are communicating in a similar fashion.

"Master Oakleaf - I think there is some magic in the air which leads to contention. Can you dispel such?" Murphy asks the investigator urgently, but quietly.

"Friends, and all in camp - we are being attacked by an outside force, which is stirring up anger and unkind words among us. Please, for now, let us speak kindly to one another, or hold our tongues if we cannot speak peaceably. The enemies of Crescent Valley would have us fight among ourselves. Let us not submit to their will."

Murphy also is mindful as to whether there is grass and other vegetation here on the ground within the grove.

[OOC: DM Kent - is it bare ground, or are there at least some small plants in the campsite area (aside from the firepits, of course)?]

Familiarize yourselves with: http://paizo.com/prd/combat.html - and be sure your character sheet reflects the formulas found there.

Especially Adomorn - get to know the combat rules. Because if Murphy's counsel does not do it, and if Oakleaf does not dispel it - we'll probably get into a big rumble soon.

Perhaps Eral or Alouryn can calm us down :-)

And everyone who has not done so post by Sunday mid-afternoon, please. Earlier is better.

And cob horses are cool - I guess the halfling version of a large war horse.

Eral notices the change and agrees with Murphy that something amiss is going on. Eral will cast Detect Magic to see if there is anything he can see. After that Eral will try to get with Murphy and Master Oakleaf to have a private conversation. "Master Oakleaf, I believe there is something about this place or someone has cast a spell over us to make us overly agitated. I cannot dismiss it now but I will pray to Domi in the morning for the proper spell to dismiss the charm unless Alouryn can help. Until then please let us get our weapons from the wagon in case anything comes upon us. I would separate your guards in a perimeter around the camp to not only protect the camp but to space them out to keep any fighting at bay. I give you my word that we shall not try and escape this night but I do want to protect us."

Eral works on trying to see if anyone in the group might be causing the effect by talking to each one. (Sense Motive) Eral will also try to gather everyone and explain what he thinks is going on. "Everyone Calm yourselves. I believe there is some magic trickery going on right now that is causing your emotions to go crazy. Work on trying to calm your emotions and remember what friends we have become in this short time."

IF we can make it until morning I will pray to Domi for the Calm Emotions spell.

Comments are made and grumpiness continues, things are said that perhaps can't be taken back but perhaps they will be ignored for whatever is occurring. even the horses are a bit nippy with each other and the driver moves them a bit further from each other.

Hazel looks for shrubs and the like around the area and sees quite a few of various types and the ground is coverd with a bit of grass, moss and several typs of ferns. The trees themselves are very very old, some having trunks nearly 4-6 feet in diameter and reaching nearly 150 in the air with a spread of 50-60 feet of canopy. To say the least they are majestic.

Detect magic is cast and there is certainly a result but is apears to very very very old magic and it seems to be coming from the trees themselves.

Eral questions Master Oakleaf about the possibility of having there weapons returned to them, and even with his very diplomatic tone and persuasiveness, he nearly gets his head bitten off as Oakleaf who has been upto this point very even keeled is visibly irritated and and angrily stomping around telling his men to stop bickering like the spoiled little s***s that they are.

Knowledge history DC 20, Bardic knowledge DC 18Highlight to display spoiler: { there is a story from long long long time ago of a part of the culverwood being known as the Forest of Discord, that caused the denizens and travelers passing through or staying there to fight and quarrel with themselves even to the point of friends fighting each other to the death.}

Eventually people stop talking and most go off to where-ever they are going to sleep and drift off, many to uncomfortable and not very pleasant dreams.

The morning comes and things have not changed one we bit, infact tempers seem to be nearly frayed beyond repair. Within minutes of waking several of the guards are in a scuffle, fists and feet flying. Sefveral other jump into the fray to apparently help separate and stop the fight, when suddenly there is the sound of steel being drawn, coming from the melee.

"Edric, I couldn't have said it better."

"Perhaps there is something to what you say, Hazel - you are very brave, indeed. And we need to find the killers, too."

"Shel, you are right, I don't always have the answer. I have ideas - some good, some mistaken."

Though he had hoped to persuade Oakleaf to have the group leave this grove before spending the whole night here, such was not to be. He checked to see whether the path toward Angel Springs continued on the other side of the grove, or out the way they came in, so he knows which way travel will be in the morning. His bedtime prayer is for wisdom.

In the morning, Murphy woke up to the beginning sounds of contention. He finds Eral Sunstrider. "Eral, now is a good time for Domi's calming influence," he tells his friend. If Alouryn, too, seems to be dealing with the stress of this place with less agitation than Hazel, he asks whether she, too, might provide a calming influence.

As the guards really begin to mix it up and the sound of a weapon being drawn comes to his ears, Murphy casts entangle to encompass the fighting guards (and anyone else who may have happened to have dived into the fray).

"Coming out of a dream this morning, I recalled my Aunt Nilli telling me about the Grove of Discord. This must be that place. We must get out, now!. This place stirs up anger and strife. Out and away from the trees, now! Do not harm each other. Simply all get out - that way!"

He uses animal handling (25) to work on hitching the horses to the carriage. He needs every ounce of his training with animals to help to calm them down enough to get them in place and hitched up.

He will trust to Eral and Alouryn, neither of whom has yet tipped over into anger, to help direct the others out. Murphy hopes no one gets stabbed or hurt too badly in the now plant-growing hampered fray.

If Oakleaf objects, he tells him, "I am not escaping nor assisting an escape, except that all of us together - you and your men included - need to escape this dread grove if we are to stay alive and well. Let's get away from it all of us, have breakfast, then continue the journey together to Angel Springs."

If someone gets seriously injured, he has one cure moderate wounds spell prepared.

[Note to DM: Am giving Murphy an additional +2 to his roll of knowledge history due to knowledge, nature and druidic training, and having been born and trained in the Culverwood, for history equivalent of 20 (rolled d20+2 for knowledge, history, +2 from knowledge, nature/druidic training) - feel tree to substitute by subtracting a hero point if you think this bonus is out of line
Also, feel, free, Kent, to limit the amount Murphy does - but he should be able as a minimum to get the entangle spell off, I believe, and he can save the following actions for slightly later.]

DM Kent
Monday January 27th, 2014 6:46:05 PM

With the use of the entangle spell and some calming words from others the fighting is soon brought to a halt thought two of the guards were slept by Oakleaf. Breakfast is hurriedly coonsumed at everyone's request and as soon as Master Oakleaf dropped his wards the party was once again underway. As soon as you pass from underneath the last tree the feelings of discord dissipate almost as if they were never there and within an hour those effected do not recall having been effected at all. Those who were not effected remember the occurances, but thay are fadin quickly as if they were the remnants of a bad dream.

A good two hours into the trip the carriage begins to slow down (too early for midday meal) and then there is the unmistakeable sound of flying arrows followed by several screams and the sound of several other arrows striking the carriage.

Almost immediately you hear Oakleaf marshalling the guards for a defensive stance and after another round of incoming arrows you hear the sounds of approaching people, who are very obviously attacking the apparent guarded merchant vehicle.

Moments later you hear a pounding on the side of the wagon and Oakleaf's voice telling you to remain inside as they have things under control.

Then you hear the sounds of combat, weapons clanking, screams of pain and anger.

Looking out the little widows you can see a limited view of what appears to be a mixed bag of Halfling, and 1/2 orc, and human Baduns fighting with the guards. You watch one guard go down and see at least two fallen foes.

There are periods of time when you can hear what could only be Oakleaf casting a spell and see very coorful lights and at least one firebal, and then you hear him extolling his men to keep up the good fight.

Then you hear something you never thought to hear. It sounded like a roaring but it was definitely speach and then you see a club swing into the picture that is of a size that is not to believed. Almost at the same time you see one of the guards struck and sent flying at least 15 feet after being struck.

Almost as one you hear Oakleaf and the remaining guards scream out. It's a Biggun!!" It is very obvious that the tide is about to turn if it hasn't already.

There is a scrambling at the door and the driver slips inside, bleeding from a couple of wounds and hold a sword in one hand and a key ring in the other. he speaks very rapidly and you can tell he is near the edge of absolute terror.

"There is a Biggun out there. Here are the keys to the weapon box. I don't care what Oakleaf says we need help and we need it now!!!!!"

As he finishes speaking the entire carriage is rocked solidly and nearly tips over as the huge club connects sending the driver flying back out the doorway.

From Grove & On Next Leg of Journey
Before leaving the grove, Murphy got out paper, ink and pen. He asked Oakleaf for permission to make a sign to post outside the grove. If granted, he writes, "Grove of Discord - Contention Within"

If permission is not granted, he simply begins to write what happened during their stay at this place, and its location. After that, he begins to outline what has been going on since they came together for the games, persued Eldon, and were subject to arrest.

He writes of the warnings he gave to Morro Goodbarrel Oakleaf, that goblins and biguns are planning to attack the valley, that the Old Traders Road is not currently safe.

Then he begins to lay out steps that the citizens and authorities within Crescent Valley might do to help prepare to defend against the threats.

After a while, he puts away the papers, closes the inkwell, and shares some cheese and bread with his companions.

Then the attack on the entourage begins.

Under Attack
After the cook (whose name he should know, please) appears and gives the keys to Hazel, Murphy follows quickly behind his friend, grabs his brother's sling staff, shoves his sickle in the frog on his belt. He spots the cob horse at C10, dashes to it and mounts (ride: 20), urging it forward (animal handling 17, and assuming its head is at C9) toward B4, where he directs it to pivot rightward, that he might face the battle, scanning to discern what is happening [perception 15].

(lost power during my post last night while we were getting 3-4 inches of snow.)

Shel, not totally out of the wagon pears around the corner of the door and sees that it appears to be an actual Ogre, or at least it looks exactly like the descriptions she has heard and read about.

Alouryn remains in the wagon wondering if anything will be right in the world again.

Hazel grabs the keys and heads out and up fron to the driver's seat to open the chest below with Murphy and Edric right behind him, where Edric grabs his axe, Murphy grabs a sling staff and his sickle and Hazel grabs his sling staff.

They get to the front of the wagon and to the box unlock it and get their weapons and somehow manage not to attrack any attention from the Orgre standing next to the wagon.

Murphy begins looking around and sees a number of the ponies milling around along, several of them injured and one dead. (Far too much to get done in one round Kim.)

Eral instead of heading to the weapons leaves the wagon and moves up next to the driver and casts a spell at the ogre. The ogre doesn't seem to be fazed by the spell at all Will Save 23

Around them the wagon you see a dance occuring between Oakleaf and the ogre neither on managing to gain any advantage at the moment but with Oakleaf circling and darting in and out and the ogre making great passes with his club.

Near to Eral a guard is facing down a 1/2 orc and the the driver moves up to assist.

Near the NE corder of the wagon you see a wounded guard facing down a 1/2 orc and a human. Near the front of the wagon just infront of the pile of logs that stopped you is another guard facing down a human. and on the south side of the wagon is a final guard facing down a halfling and a 1/2 orc.

Around the field you also see 2 dead guards and perhaps three dead briggands.

[Though Murphy would have understood this, I did not realize the weapons were stowed at the opposite end of the carriage away from the exit door. He will not bother getting his weapons. Rather, he will head to the horse at C2 as described previously.]

Murphy dashes from near Eral to the horse near guard #4 and Kentum* - the driver and cook.

He mounts the cob horse [ride: 20], and urges it forward [handle animal: 17], turning it so its head is at D5, and tail at C5. Murphy looks over the battle [perception: 30], and prepares for spell casting.

[I used rolls from last round in this one, except for perception, which let me see what I saw last round, so I rolled afresh for this one. Also, as the *driver's/cook's name was not provided, I offer a suggested name for him above.]

Alouryn contemplates a lot in 12 seconds. She knows her friends are in danger. She makes a quick promise to Flower "If you can get us out of this safely I'll still follow your ways." Hoping the wagon is the centre of the battle she calls upon Flower's love to Bless the party.

(all allies within 50 ' get +1 to attacks and save vs fear for 3 minutes)

Then Alouryn peeks out around the door to see what is going on; staying in the wagon for now.

Good guys

While Alouryn has second thoughts she still stays in the wagon but casts a bless spell to aid her friends.

Shel decides to slow the ogre down with a color spray spell.

Hazel fires off to sling stones at the ogre and is gratified to see the first one at least strike the beast.

Eral draws his sword and casts a bless spell.

Murphy dashes out of the back of the wagon and toward the cob nearby and manages to grab hold of it and get mounted and then realizes that there is an orc just on the other side that is taking a swing at him (AoO) but is lucky that he is missed. Turning the horse he prepares to move off and out of the way for a bit.

Edric moves a bit and takes aim o the Ogre but misses.

[Ride: 8 stay in saddle succeeds following taking damage]

Despite the alacrity with which he mounted the horse, Murphy suddenly thinks he may have not chosen wisely. The orc just thwacked him, and if he tries to cast from the saddle, the orc might continue his thwacking. Using his light acrobatic/tumbling skills, Murphy withdraws over the saddle his right leg, now lightly wounded in the upper thigh, and jumps away from the momentary mount a distance of about five feet away from the left flank of the horse. [Acrobatics 12 - should be d20+5=12, not d20+6=13 - mistakenly applied +1 from bless, but that does not affect skill checks. Needed dc 10, so leap to the side should succeed] He lands at B10, and turns about to see what he might do when not sitting tall - or short - in the saddle.

Tuesday February 4th, 2014 11:15:48 PM

The rogue who helped the party rescue Eldon finds that the current situation is the last straw. Adventure is fine, but he thinks to himself, 'Why did I let myself get caught up in this whole arrest thing? Oakleaf didn't pay good attention to our warnings, and did not even think to let us help before things got as bad as they have just now. I don't trust him. Perhaps I can escape and warn the authorities about this attack, and let them know that they had better raise the militia to defend the valley.'

Using the skills he has developed, and taking advantage of the chaos of battle, Adomorn sneaks [nat. 20 on hide in shadows] out of the wagon, past the combatants, and finds some tall grass to hide in. Depending upon the height of the grass, he will either run in a crouch to a point at least a few hundred yards away from the group, or crawl on his belly until he can find better cover. Regardless of how things turn out with this fight, he resolves to get away. Who knows - there might be bigun reinforcements on the way.

'These are good people,' he thinks. 'If they don't make it, maybe I can.'

'Or, maybe, we should get help outside the valley. Or, it might be a good time just to see the sights elsewhere.'

Murphy was rocked by the swing of the ogre's club. He also realizes that had he not shifted ever so slightly prior to the weapon connecting with him, he might have been killed. The time he and his friends have spent in the past few weeks of adventuring have imbued in him a growing awareness of how to respond and react in the midst of combat. Still, it hurt!

Through the pain, though, he notices [perception: 27] that the ogre had a slight stumble in his step. Is he weakening?

Through his mind race several options - obscurement, or healing - no, keep it simple, stay with what has worked in recent times. Another lightning arc connects with the huge opponent for 6 hp damage. "Hit the ogre! HIT THE OGRE!" he calls out to his friends and the guards in the tongue that they, but few of their adversaries, understand - halfling.

He takes a 5-foot-step to G6 - not out of range of the club, but placing some separation between himself and Master Oakleaf, so that the ogre cannot attack both of them concurrently. Hmmm... is Murphy getting a bit wobbly on his legs, as well?

Note to Alouryn - On curing/healing rolls, 1s are rerolled. DM Kent may want you to do so, or do so himself, but if he allows it, this roll 6 should be added to the 2 for a total of 8 (and ignore the 2nd d6 - you only rolled one 1) may apply for your positive energy roll, rather than 3.

Kent - please let us know your ruling on this. - thanks! --Kim

Shel sends a little more acid the ogre's way.

Alouryn sends some healing energy through the friendly masses Healing 8 points to all the good guys.

Hazel again hits once with his sling sending another and final stone into the Ogre.

Edric moves in to attack the orge but misses.

Eral attacks once more with his spiritual weapon before it vanishes but misses badly.

G5 nearly decapitates Ha1 with his strike.

G4 and the driver both connect solidly with Hu1 dropping him to the ground.

Oakleaf sends a small ray of frost at the ogre

Or1 and Hu2 both attack Hazel this time but both again miss. AC 12 & 9.

Ogre takes an attack of opportunity on Edric ans he moves forwar to attack but just misses. Faced with four possible targets he chooses Oakleaf to go after this time and clobbers him with the club. AC 21 for 14 points dropping him to the ground like a felled stack of firewood.

Murphy takes another five-foot step back, this time to H5, and summons a small air elemental - this one appears a short distance from the ogre at H8 in the form of a smoky bird of prey. He directs it to slam the giant (hit AC 19 if bless applies to the druid's summoned creature, or AC 18 otherwise - likely a near miss in either case... if a hit, 4 damage - it may have hit if Eral is considered to be flanking).

The druid's hope, whether the massed air creature can hit the ogre or not, is that the big creature will be distracted enough by this new threat to focus his attention on it. But, wait, he doesn't want the ogre to actually hit it! 'You don't belong in Crescent Valley, ogre - so here you die' he says in the giant tongue.

The weapons of the two prisoners are collected and they are tied up the orc does not appear to speak goblin or common and the Human is just being uncooperative at the moment, but does add to his previous comment. Idafeatu is an Ogre mage and warlord that is in the area and he was the one contracted with to kill that old lady.

Shel and Hazel are all in favor of immediate wild justice while others think they should be taken to Angel Springs and turned over to the Baron.

Eral is of the mind that Oakleaf will probably vouch for them now that they saved them in the fight.

The four remaining riding ponies are collected and claimed by Oakleaf and the two remaining guards, and the driver helps get the wagon set back together.

Oakleaf seems to be much more friendly around you now and even mentions that he will most definitely speak with his 2nd cousin, the Lord Mayor of Angel Springs, for you when you all arrive.

You also note that he does not ask for your weapons to be returned to the box.

There are seven bandit bodies, a dead ogre body and 3 guard bodies lying around the area as well as two large trees lying across the road blocking the wagon's way.

"What shall we do with those who have died in this fight?" Murphy asks no one in particular. "For the Baron's men, shall we bring them back to Angel Springs for proper burial by their families?" he asks those who are about, making sure that driver Kentum, Morrow and the two remaining guards hear his query. Now that the rage of battle has subsided, there are things to consider.

"For the attackers - shall we bury them? Do we bring their bodies for identification? No way can we bring the ogre. Maybe the ... never mind. I don't want to be hauling an ogre's head across the countryside. Shall we burn them?" He really does not know the best course of action regarding them, so asks his friends and their escort for their counsel.

"Search the orc and Grinface here to see what things they have hidden in their clothes, on their body. Take everything that is not clothing off them. Take their belts. Take their shoes. They are not halflings, and may find it hard to run on rocky ground if they try to get away. Hobble their legs for the same purpose. Rope between ankles and between knees that allows two feet of movement and no more will make it hard to do more than walk with many steps."

He takes Hazel aside for a moment. "My friend - I thought to do as you tried to do. The man is wicked. But let justice take its course. You and others saw what he did. We will testify. They dared attack the Baron's men. I know, us, too. Perhaps you are angry with me for asking you to stay your hand. If so, you can punch me. But may I request you wait until we get into town, and these are handed over to the authorities?" He looks in his friend's eyes. "They are wicked. Let us be better than them." If the ranger wants to answer, he will wait and listen. "You know that Grinface's words exonerate you and Alouryn, right? It was Idafeatu who arranged the killing. As we both know, you and Alouryn are innocent."

After that discussion, then he mentions, "Adomorn left during the fight. Can you tell which way he went? Where his tracks are? I think he took my food bag. Maybe he went for help, or was afraid, or didn't want to face the authorities in Angel Springs to answer for something in which he had no involvement. I really do not know. Unless he left a note, it's just guesses."

"Shel - did you find anything of import on the bodies of the enemies? You checked for magic, yes?" He looks at the ogre. "Maybe we can use ropes and the horses to turn that one over, to see if we missed anything." He'll work with the guards on that task. He will arrange for the attackers' bodies to be lined up side by side next to the fallen ogre, then cast detect magic himself, as did Shel, to see if there is anything worthwhile to take from them, whether weapons, trinkets, etc., as well as any money. He reports whatever of the latter he finds to Oakleaf. "Let's see if there are any written orders, notes, letters on any of them, too," he says, requesting assistance in the search from fellow members of Humble's Sword.

It is discovered that both Adomorn and the goblin seem to have disapeared during the conflict. The ropes that were tying the goblin are lying uncut but untied where he was sitting. After a brief search you find what can only be two the scuff marks and foot prints of two folk passing under the wagon and heading southward into the Red Hills after a few hundred feet or so the paths seperate and go their own ways.

Shel checks the bodies of the dead enemies while the guards begin moving the trees from the road and Murphy has a chat with Hazel.

There is a ring upon one of the ogre's fingers that radiates magic. There is also a hard leather container of 4 vials that radiate magic as well.

In addition there is quite the stash of pretty good weaponry (three short swords, three longsowrds, 3 battle axes, 9 daggers, 4 lt cross bows and one great club and 6 javelins). The armor though is mostly ruined and was of pretty poor quality.

Also found is a small pouch on the ogre containing 5 gemstones (250 gp) and amongst the other bandits you find another 50 gold pieces.

When the subject of what to do with the bodies comes up Oakleaf speaks.

First off let me thank you for coming to our aid in this conflict. For you did not have to. Abnd I am sure that there are many were they in your position would not have. This more than anything says more about you and who you are than anything you could have said in your defense. I do not believe you had anything to do with the Priestess' death and I will say that amongst other things to my cousin when we arrive in Angel Springs.

As for the bodies leave the vermin here to rot and feed the denizens of the Hills. As for my guards we will return them to their families for honorable and proper burials. For now we will wrap them in the large canvass we used for shelter and tie them to the roof. As for those two they will be returned to Angel Springs where they will tell us all they know and then pay for their foul deeds.

Everybody please add 1250 Exp total to your totals for scenes 1 & 2.

Shel takes the ring of the ogre's finger, and collects the pack full of potions. She casts Detect Magic and tries to study them, hoping to take her mind of her current dark mood. "Let's see if I can figure out what these do," she mutters, focusing deeply on her study.

Names
Murphy gets the name of each surviving guard. Because the young adventurers fought together on the same side with the guards, and they are important to him, and he really wants to know their names... He also asks about the fallen, how they were called.

Halflings as enemies?
"Why are halflings attacking Crescent Valley," he asks those there in general. "I know some live in the Red Hills, but why come against us? If some wanted to come live here, I'm fairly confident we could make room for them. But, why attack their own? I do not understand that." Murphy spends a little more time searching for clues among their clothing and possessions as to where the halflings in the attacking group may have come from. "Why would our kin join with ogres and orcs against us?"

What can Grinface tell him?
He takes the time to ask the surviving human about that, too. "What did you all hope to gain by attacking this wagon? Was it Idafeatu who sent you here, too? By the way, I'm Murphy. What's your name?" Once securely bound, he casts a cure light wounds upon the man, healing 5 hp. "Say, do you know anything about a halfling in a cart drawn by two ponies heading north on the Old Traders' Road about a week back? His wife is expecting their first babe, and we'd like to see him back with her." Murphy asks all this in a casual fashion, but is alert to any clues or information the man may be willing to communicate. "Were you in on taking out the old lady?" If not, he asks, "Do you know who did that?"

Perhaps the man will answer, perhaps not.

Adomorn and Dzurs
He wonders to himself whether Adomorn helped the goblin escape, or whether the goblin left independently... following a ways behind the halfling, then splitting off at some stage? He finds it hard to believe that his old acquaintance would betray the group, but it's also hard to understand why he did as he did. He gets Hazel's opinion on the matter, as well as seeing if anyone else might have a notion or a theory.

Ogre digit reclamation
Before they leave the battle scene, Murphy takes a bag. He takes a hatchet, and chops off the right thumb of the ogre, lets it bleed into the grass for a minute or so, and places it in the bag, then wraps another bag around that. "Gruesome, I know. But I bring the thumb as proof of what we came across in the battle to show to authorities, in case they doubt us," Murphy tells anyone who questions him about this action. He is not used to being doubted, but knows that some only believe what their eyes tell them.

What all happened during the battle?
The druid asks Kentum, the driver, which way the initial attack came from. Was it from all sides? Or just along one side? He checks to see where the arrows were embedded in the carriage.

He asks Hazel, Edric, Shel and Alouryn about what happened on the other sides of the wagon, as his focus was on the left side of their vehicle primarily. He wants to better understand their opponents' tactics, as well as get a deeper knowledge of his friends' abilities. He asks Eral also to give his perspectives.

Gratitude expressed, and a question made
"My thanks to each of you, my friends. Whether Edric's axe, Eral's hammer, Hazel's staff-sling, the spells of Shel and Alouryn - and Eral - your bravery and actions helped to keep us alive when facing death, and saved those who escort us, as well. I realize that our little group started out as just a group of young halflings looking to enjoy a challenging game - yet look what we are becoming. Together now almost two weeks, and we have faced poisonous toads, gobin dogs, traveled a swamp, rescued an old friend, took down the goblins who had imprisoned him, were falsely accused, help to quell conflict in the enchanted copse of trees, turned around an attack by brigands, and learned that war is coming upon our land, and have time, I pray, to prepare our people against our enemies.

"It is an honor to have such stalwart companions and friends as you. Do you want us to keep working together as a team? Not for prizes, not for cheers - but to save and serve Humble's Ford, and all of Crescent Valley?" He has seen two rogues, a bard and a fighter already leave the group. He wants to know if those who made it this far have the desire, the will, the commitment, to carry on.

With Morro Oakleaf
Privately, if possible, he speaks with Master Oakleaf. "I pray we make it safe the rest of the way. I am very glad that your life was spared, sir. I've never fought an ogre before. He was scary." He looks down for a moment, then looks into the distance, and says, quietly, "I am sorry for the loss of your men. May they fare well in the life after life."

Quick addendum:

Once back underway, Murphy takes the time to write up what has happened since after leaving the trees of discord. He sketches a brief outline of the main points, then fills in the details as they rumble along.

Then he passes what he wrote to any of his friends who would like to read it, and asks for comments, corrections, additions. He fills up only about 70% of each page, leaving room for more details. Murphy takes a few pages to sketch out the battle scene, and how the skirmish developed, based upon what he saw, what the guards and Oakleaf said, and his friends' recollections, too.

Though less interesting food than what his mother had sent in the now missing bag, he shares some of the more durable fare he had left over from their journey through the swamps. He makes sure that the prisoners, also, have food and drink.

Thinking that acquisition of another language might be useful, he spends some time a little later with the orc, seeking to elicit words for various items, then making simple sentences. He also lets the orc know the common tongue equivalents. No way is he going to teach him any of the halfling tongue.

Language-wise, he struggles also to recall the Aurun that Nilli tried to teach him. Maybe someone in Crescent Valley might help him there.

To Edric,while clearing the path.
"Me too. I would be awkward at best."
To Murphy, taking aside.
"Justice? Which justice? The one that has Alouryn, the most gentle and wonderful person I know prisoner? The one that leaves a cold blooded murderer laugh at us? Is that Justice? There is no justice, just us. Will we leave them murder and pillage? Will we leave the get away with it. You haven't hold my hand. You just delayed it. Adomorn? He did the right thing by getting away. I have no reason to bring him back. If not for Alouryn, I would have gone with him too."
After Murphy's speech, he adds.
"Right now you are all the family I got, I won't leave." - He turns towards Alouryn - "Unless you all want to. Protect Crescent Valley? From prison? Let's hope so..."

"Don't you understand? Your name is cleared, Hazel, and Alouryn too. We all know that neither of you, that none of us, is guilty as charged. Now we know who ordered it. And we know that Oakleaf understands this, too. None of us is destined for prison for the crime against the beloved Sarabella Lovesong.

"But Grinface has said he will tell us what he knows - already has told some. For the survival of the community, we need to gather information where we can. Maybe he knows something about where Bingo is, whether he is all right or not - and if we know that, perhaps he can be rescued, and continue as husband to Lilly, and father to their child.

"This is not just about your rage. Do you think I do not view his actions as wicked, and worthy of capital punishment? But shall rage overcome wisdom and discretion? Grinface provoked you on purpose. He mocked. He was trying to enrage you, to spite you. Be better than him, and don't let him win when he tries to control you. You are strong, Hazel, stronger than I. Be strong also in your spirit and soul, and in self-control.

"After his trial - you can petition the court to be his executioner, if you feel it must be your direct hand to end his life. Else let another carry out judgment."

==========

"Master Oakleaf, some clerics are able to speak with the dead. If we leave the bodies here, could not one of their allies come and inquire of them? It may be harder were they reduced to ashes. What are your thoughts on this matter?" If Oakleaf favors burning, then Murphy will work with those who wish to help to carry that out. If not, then it's time to leave.

"That brings to mind - as part of the investigation - did no one try to speak with the spirit of her holiness, Priestess Lovesong?"

==========

He nods acknowledgement of Hazel's commitment.
"How do the rest of you feel? Do we stay together after we meet with the Baron, to help defend our homes, and kin, and place in the Wold? If you want to wait to answer until after that matter is resolved, then we will await your decision. No one is obliged. Each of you is welcome, and your company desired."

Apart with Murphy....
"you trust them? Really? I don't. Not after they charged Alouryn. Are they blind? Are they stupid? We don't need an orc's confession to know she didn't do it. I don't trust them..."
He puts his and on Murphy's shoulder.
"But I do trust you. Hope you are right. But if they try to hurt Alouryn, I won't hold out again."

After hearing Murphy Alouryn comes out of the wagon.
"As a devotee we are taught only love and compassion but, even though it is wrong, I seek vengeance against the High Priestess' killer(s). Whatever is to come of us now I feel that we are all in it together. Murphy hasn't led us astray yet and I do not wish to leave Hazel's company. Are we to continue to Angel Springs then?"

Shel easily can tell that the ring is of the protective type (+1). The first and second potions are nearly as easily identified, as both are cure moderate wound potions (2d8+6) the third and fourth potions however turn out to be much more difficult to figure out and shel isn't quite sure what they are. though the third one is slightly orange in color and seems to be of a clerical nature. The fouth is clear like water and exudes a feeling of transmutation magic.

Driver - Kentum Meadows
G4 - Bartholomew Barley
G5 - Flauston Berrywine

Grinface as you call him won't tell you a whole lot, but he smiles as you ask whether Idafeatu sent them and he definitely says he has no idea at all about this other halfling you are talking about. Though he does say that they are just one of several groups that work for Idafeatu.

Information about the attack gleans that everything was begun from the south side of the road and from the front of the wagon.

The orc steadfastly remains mute and nonresponsive, except to glare at his companion everytime he opens his mouth.

As you search through the bodies of the slain bad guys you find that each of the halflings bear a justice mark on their right hands that marks them as convicted thieves.

There are still several sets of bruised feelings and angry thoughts roiling around the group but they all agree to stick together and head to Angel Springs and then to find the person or persons responsible for killing Sarabella Lovesong.

Once the road is cleared Flauston jins Kentum on the wagon seat as Oakleaf and Bartholomew mount thier ponies. The prisoners are tied alongside the wagon, and there are two other ponies fit to be ridden. Who is where inside wagon, or on a pony?

The remainder of the trip to Angel Springs 1.5 days if uneventful and sooner than thought you are approaching the Trade Gate.

Murphy communicates about the dead halflings' justice marks. "Outcasts." As they leave the ambush site, Murphy rides inside that he might write in his journal as described earlier. He also asks Shel if he can read Volume 2 of 'Journye to the Moones' by Lord Karlton Pobberington-Whyte III as they travel. "I want to find out what I can about his trip to Wardd and Kerracles. Maybe some day we can go there, too." He attends closely to what he reads. Once in a while he will read short, interesting portions to his friends.

The next morning he says he would like to ride one of the ponies for a few hours (ride: 16). He'll ride until lunch, then rejoin those in the carriage, and pick up on his reading, a bit of writing. He also tries to start sketching the faces of his companions. Not terribly well, initially, but he works at it - a few are vaguely recognizable. He also tries to draw the countenances of Grinface, Kentum, Morro Oakleaf, Flauston, Bartholomew and the orc.

"Glad we're here, friends. Though we came somewhat under command, I think our time here may prove worthwhile."

Shel had to admit that she'd never seen anyone in continually great spirits like Murphy seemed to be. All she wanted was to sit and sulk, but the fact that he had taken an interest in the Wardd moon sort of snapped her out of it. "Wardd is very peculiar, isn't it? Visiting there one day would be the greatest adventure ever. I'd love to find some of the other volumes of Lord Karton's works. You have seen my little pendant, haven't you? It's connected to Wardd somehow as well. With me finding the book and the pendant, I have to think, for so,e reason that I might get to go there one day!"

She tells the others about the three items she was able to identify. "One of you swordsmen should take the ring. Ever less nick and cut you get will be helpful. The potions would help you as well."

Eral agrees with Shel that we should use the ring as soon as possible. Eral will ride in the wagon unless one of the ponies is not taken.
We could use the ring to help protect one of the less armored people as well but if we want to keep it up front we should give it to the fighter as I have Domi to help protect me. I would like to give everyone a potion if possible that does not have healing magic to help incase those of us who can heal are incapacitated.

Hopefully we can get the murder solved quickly and be on our way back to the Ford with information."
