DM Ian - Magic Items, Experience Points, and Ol' Man Cedric
Friday January 10th, 2014 3:11:44 AM

With a full night's rest, a character gains HP equal to their character level, so everyone is healed for another 2HP by the morning. Each character gains 420EXP from the last two scenes -- keep in mind you're only level two and it has to be divided in eight! And a hero point is awarded to Cameron for risking his life to save Sergeant Helmbane during the combat!

William is the first to wake up, and he quickly strikes up conversation with Hope, who is already downstairs. "My magic... is magic?" she almost asks. "I dunno, I've just sort of always been able to do it. Dad says Mom could do stuff like that too. The only things I can do are big lights and sounds, on top of healing. These things don't seem very interested by those kinda things."

DC 15 Kn: Arcana -- Highlight to display spoiler: {She seems to be speaking of illusory magic. The way she speaks of her magical powers, she is likely a spontaneous caster, not one that must prepare like a wizard.}

DC 13 Kn: Religion -- Highlight to display spoiler: {Undead are mindless, and generally unaffected by any illusions. They are uninterested, or simply too stupid to realize anything is happening.}

Linden heals his allies before going to bed. Upon waking up, he prays for his spells and eats a hearty breakfast among the townsfolk in the common room.

Bliss wanders into the back, looking for something to eat. While there are no berries, the brother offers him some leftover bread and meat from the night before going to sleep. He quickly tracks down the magical items they received from the undead, hoping to identify them. The necklace has an aura of evocation and is identified as a Necklace of Fireball Type I. The potions both carry conjuration auras and are identified as Cure Moderate Wounds (2d8+3). The feather remains a mystery, although it has a strong aura of conjuration.

Prudence goes out to find Credric and finds herself faced with a room full of mostly asleep strangers. The hunt for the madman will have to wait another day. There is a heap of flour bags that Bliss has already settled down on for the night which the sorcerer is perfectly content with.

Cameron orders some breakfast, which is cooked up quickly by the sleepy looking cook from the previous night. Soon, the one known as Old Man Cedric arrives by ringing the bell attached to the string outside and having someone left him in. The half-elf is getting on in his days, with most of his hair giving way to a soft, pink scalp while wild, half-blind eyes peer at your from beneath two wild eyebrows. Clearly, this man has seen a lot. As Cameron approaches him, he lets out a cackle. "I was wonderin' when you'd finally come talk to me." See below for more...

Tinker jokes with Guy the guard, who smiles at the dwarf. He spends the rest of the shift in a good mood, chatting with the rogue about life in Cheerful Stay. The next morning, he approaches Trimmack and asks where the item might be and its connection with the goings-on here. "We've been hired to figure out where it is. Only intel we got was that it was stolen from around here. As for the connection, well, I wouldn't work on that assumption. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised, either. Magic's tricky like that."

With Nikolai bolstering his courage as well, Guy is positively beaming by the time he leaves to go home at the end of the night. "Thank you both... I'm gonna rethink joinin' the Fist. Might make my family proud." He puffs out his chest and strides off into the night, axe held aloft.

Carver gets downstairs before the Sergeants, speaking to his fist about what he believes to be their true mission.

As Cameron speaks with the old man, a space begins to clear around them. Clearly, no one wants to be near Cedric when he begins ranting. (Anyone who wishes can be part of this conversation -- they are in the common room, and Cedric speaks quite loudly.)

"Yes, yes, I knows what's causin' this awful mess," the half-elf sighs. He seems to whistle slightly when pronouncing his s, making his whole speech rather difficult to follow. "Yes'm, them folks came through just a few weeks ago, righ' before this alls goin' down, I tell you what. A month, most, most. Only five of 'ems, but ol' Cedric noticed them, 'e did. Three o' them round-ears, one o' the shorter kinds, and a big brute uva half-blood, yes'm. Nothin' t'identify, nothin' at all, wanted to be real careful, if you ask me. Only stayed one night, 'n then they left."

The seemingly crazy old man leans in close to the halfling, bringing his voice down to barely a whisper. "I'm only tellin' yas this cuz ya seem so nice 'n such. They's was a strange bunch, not that ol' Cedric is one t' discriminate. No, but they was prayin', I can tells ya that much, prayin' before ev'ry meal, they was. Almost seemed like a ritual, y'ask me. And they was talkin' about somethin' real important, but they wouldn't say what it was." With that, the old man lets out a huge laugh, throwing his head back and devolving into a coughing fit. "But I'm just an old coot, what do I know, aye?"

Its a long shot, but Cameron thinks back on what he knows of religion and which ones might pray at those kinds of times. Nothing comes to mind though.
" I've learned alot of what I know from 'old coots', so maybe you know alot more than people give you credit for. You sure can tell the character of a person it seems. Did any of them have a weighty pack maybe, or some luggage they never left alone? We happen to be here looking for some 'shifty' folks that took something the didn't own. These might be those shifty folks. If you remember anything else be sure to tell me or any other member of our group here, okay?"

Diplomacy 27

Returning to his fistmates, Cameron asks," Did anyone else say anything to any of you about these travelers? Five would be a good number for a magical item theft job. Not too many to blab about it and enough muscle and finesse to pull it off. Since we don't know what the book we are looking for is about it COULD be them messing around with something they don't fully understand that caused this undead mess. Do the undead either come from one central location or loiter around in any one location that we have learned about? If they do the item might be there, either with the theirve alive and using it or dead around it. That would be something worth checking out."
" Otherwise, we are hopelessly behind in finding these guys if they were indeed the theives. I mean I CAN track, but a month worth of weather and an undead horde running amok over their trail I don't think I could track them through that."

Since Bliss wasn't able to tell what the feather might be, Pru casts her own Detect Magic spell and gives it a go. She isn't any better than Bliss, however, at identifying it [Spellcraft 16]. "Maybe William will have better luck," she says. "We'll ask him later."

In the common room, Pru listens to Cedric's tale, and turns it over in her mind. "So they came through, and they took something," she says, trying to grasp everything that's going on. "Well, probably took something. Are we sure it's a book? Maybe the presence of the book kept the dead from walking, and now that it's gone...." she shakes her head. "We still don't have much to go on."

Tinker can only agree with Sergeant Trimmack that magic is tricksy. These are good folks, and maybe being too coy don't get the answers. So Tinker goes to find his guard-mate Guy.

Tinker isn't diplomatic, so he just comes right out. "We're hired to find a stolen magic item from around these parts. Who might know something about that?" He then dutifully reports his conversation to the others.

Nikolai reports to his friends that apparently the undead linger around the graveyard when not wandering around.
"Unless our Sergeants have something else better for us to do today, we should start there. It is as good a place to start looking for the book as any other."

Nikolai accepts whatever breakfast the cook can cook up and when the sergeants arrive, he makes the proposition to start looking around the graveyard.

After Old Man Cedric is finished, Nikolai asks the half-elf which way did the five go when they left.

Bliss wakes for the day to find that everyone else is already up and at 'em!

"Mookie," he complains, "why didn't you wake me up?"

The raven shrugs. "You needed rest."

"Well come on!" Bliss gets dressed and casts Reduce Person. He seems about to run off. "There's stuff to do!"

"Hold your centaurs, kid," says Mookie calmly. "What about your morning quiet time?"

Bliss' face falls. "Oh yeah."

The halfling finds a quiet place to sit and meditate for an hour to get back spells.

" Do they linger there during the day, or only at night? The necklace allows us to create a destructive fireball, and the town and mine have plenty of lamp. Lamps burn oil. If a fair amount of that oil were left at the graveyard and a fireball were set off, we could look for these robbers without needing to watch out for pesky undead all the time."
Cameron hopes that the practical face he has put on dealing with the undead makes it more suitable to his sergeants. He doesn't like leaving the town to it's fate, but if they have to do so to finish the job, he will, he just won't like it.

Finally he replies, "Yes, that sounds like your magic didn't work against undead, since they aren't affected usually by illusory magic... Mine's more of the conjuration type and hopefully I'll have more luck..."

He also takes a look at the feather and tries to discern what it might be... Since he's a conjurer specialist, it shouldn't be very hard to figure out what it does.... (Spellcraft = 20)...

Finally, he listens to the old man ranting and adds, "Yes, I think trying the graveyard might be a good step to start with, but during the daylight would be best for a reconnaissance mission.. I don't want to go there at night until we're better prepared with as much information as possible..."

Cameron was saying that FOR the Sergeants. They are going to go all 'duty' and 'contract' on us if we just try to kill the undead. The whole ploy of maybe finding the item or at least tracks to follow after the undead are gone was so they would allow us to do it.

DM Ian - What Was That Noise?
Monday January 13th, 2014 2:13:32 AM

Linden asks for a description of the prayers. Cedric replies, "Ach, who can tell the diff'rence these days? Prolly some wishy-washy God promisin' 'em somethin' false, aye?"

Cameron tries to recall any specific rituals regarding prays before meal times, but there are so many people that do this, it would be difficult to tell. "I dunno about no luggage, but they was always armoured, head ta toe."

Prudence gives identifying the feather a shot, but falls short of the goal, much like her allies. After hearing the old man's ranting, it appears they do not have much evidence to go on.

Tinker seeks out his new friend, Guy, who is already in Haggard's getting himself some breakfast. His trust axe is leaning against the table as the rogue approaches and asks about the magic item. "Stolen magic item?" The young man's face seems blank. "Uhh... I guess Boone might know about it. He's the local cleric, but he doesn't leave the church much these days. Other than that, I think Hope is the only other spellslinger we got."

Nikolai tells his friends that the zombies seem to linger by the graveyard, according to Guy's reports. When he asks Cedric which way these people went, he replied, "Last I saw, they was eyeballin' the old road east. Don't lead anywhere, 'cept an old church a few miles out."

Bliss has his usual morning routine of arguing with Mookie, reducing himself, and preparing his spells.

William has a look at the feather, but still cannot identify it. He agrees that the graveyard might be the best course of action.

Carver cautions the group that the sergeants will likely want some input into their plans, bringing them over to their table in the common room.

Trimmack and Helmbane listen to your opinions and weigh the options for a moment. Trimmack pulls out a small pad of paper and jots a few things down, while Helmbane simply stares forward with his arms crossed. It is the dwarf that speaks first. "Well, the graveyard does seem like a good place -- assuming these undead are connected with the thing we're lookin' for. That's an awfully big assumption we're workin' on. Which isn't to say it might be wrong, just that we don't have much to back it up. I've asked around, and the graveyard is on the northern edge of the town. Apparently, that part's been all but abandoned since this all started."

At this point, Trimmack speaks up. "I'm pretty interested in these armoured folk that came through. If the zombies are connected, you can bet there's some religious aspect involved. I've seen necromancy before, and it ain't pretty."

"Well that may be true," Helmbane interjects. "But the undead are a threat no matter what. We should take care of 'em first before moving on with the mission."

"We move on with the mission no matter what," Trimack urges. "That's what we're here to do."

Bliss hears something outside as well, following his ally up to the roof. See below for more...

Linden wants to make sure that no one is outside. Unfortunately, there is no way to see outside except for the small slot that opens on the front door. From the small angle it provides, you can see nothing outside.

Prudence cannot hear anything, but trusts the others enough. She urges everyone away from the door, an order with which everyone quickly complies. Someone calls out, "What's happening? amid other various chatter in the room.

Carver readies a charge for the door if the Fist needs to exit.

Nikolai asks for another casting of Mage Armour. Unfortunately, there is no way to see outside except for the small slot that opens on the front door. From the small angle it provides, you can see nothing outside.

William casts a spell on himself, following the others up to the roof. (It is daytime now, you no longer need darkvision.)

Tinker takes the risk of peeking out the front door, but as he opens it up, he sees nothing. However, the screams are much clearer now -- they seem to be rather far off in the distance.

Up on the rooftop, Cameron, Bliss, and William look out over the small village. Despite the fact that the Inn is one of the tallest buildings in Cheerful Stay, they cannot seem to make out anything from their vantage point. The screams are much clearer now, but you can say with confidence that they are not from the immediate area.

Helmbane pushes his way out the front door, pointing down the road to the right. "Fist, you scout out that way. Trimmack and I will take this direction. Everyone dashes out of Haggard's Inn as the sergeants hustle off in the other direction with the intention of meeting somewhere in the middle. As the Fist ploughs through the streets of Cheerful Stay, the screaming becomes louder until they fall upon the scene of the violence. The sight of civilians attempting to fight off horrible creatures unsuccessfully greets your eyes as you turn a corner. Disembodied hands litter the street, grasping at ankles and crawling up arms to reach the throat. Other pale corpses stalk the street, sharp teeth jutting out of their twisted mouths. Their heads whip around as the Fist comes into view.

But the trip there is grueling! Adrenaline pumped, feet pounding against the ground, the Fist can easily tire themselves out before reaching the battle Everyone must succeed on a DC 13 Fortitude Save or be staggered for this round! Any player moving this round must begin their movement in the green area highlighted at the top of the map. Players, please declare what squares you begin your movement in. Centaurs, you only need to begin your movement with one square inside the designated area.

Did my shot with a readied missile weapon hit? Damage posted last round, copied here for ease of use.
Attack 16 (if point blank)
Damage 8 (if point blank)
Any of the 3 closest targets is within Point Blank range. The Pale Corpse on #2 would probably be the most noticeable and therefor most likely target.

Fort save 23, not Staggered

OOC: Save vs staggered is a 21, woot, so question of having to roll or not is moot for Bliss. Also OOC: Bliss's Reduce lasts 10 rounds. How many rounds does he have left on his current spell?

Up in the sky, Bliss sees his friends hurrying toward the commotion. "That way, Mookie!" he says.

Soon, it is clear that there is a fight, and Mookie caws in alarm. "Get off get off get off! I'm not in this fight! I'm just an RP companion!"

"What's RP mean?"

"I'm a Retired Person! You fight your own fights, kid!"

"Okay, okay," says Bliss, drawing his crossbow and hopping off his faithful steed.

If Bliss lands on a roof, say D-3 or I-3 ...

Bliss, using the roof edge for cover, snipes at the enemies below. He shoots and then ducks back under cover.

He shoots at the disembodied hand in space 11-3. He takes a -4 shooting into melee. He hits AC21 for 3 damage. Then he ducks back out of sight. Stealth 15.

OOC: If Bliss spell is about to expire, he'll recast it instead of firing. Ley Line check 17 is OK.

If Bliss lands in a green area, say E-3, then ...

Bliss pulls out his basket (a move action), drops it in front of him (free action) -- it enlarges when it leaves his grasp -- and Bliss hides behind it (move action). His Stealth check (using the roll above, but not sniping so at +10 more) is 25.

Keep up! Keep up! Pru is so intently focused on keeping up with the rest of her Fist that she doesn't realize how dangerously fatigued she's getting. She arrives at the battle weak-kneed and gasping for air. [Fort save 8, Staggered.]

Luckily, she doesn't need to move any farther. She drops her weapons where she stands (let's say E-1) and points a finger at one of the crawling hands. A bolt of flame leaps out, singeing the dead flesh. "Run!" she tells the townsperson.

[Elemental Ray at the disembodied hand at I-5. Hit Touch AC 15 for 8 damage.]

He looks around for any other undead or living people in the area. Maybe they got up on the walls or roof?

Cameron is the first on the scene, firing a shot at one of the rotting hands and missing by only a few inches.

Bliss lands on the roof, firing off a quick shot for some damage. (I assume you mean the hand in E-11 since 11-3 isn't a coordinate.)

Prudence, despite being quite out of breath, raises her hand and lets a bolt of fire scorch the nearest hand!

Linden charges in to face the undead, but finds himself too winded to complete the task.

Carver moves in, but he is slightly blocked by the other centaur in the small road. Luckily, he reaches past his ally to strike a solid blow on the pale, toothy corpse!

Tinker arrives, also out of breath, but still manages to take a shot at the nearby creature. Unfortunately, it misses only by a small amount. In the immediate area, there do not appear to be any other civilians or undead.

William arrives just in time to finish off the already-scorched hand attacked the nearest civilian, a young woman clutching what appears to be a large kitchen knife.

Nikolai rushes in, moving in front of his ally to take a swing at the nearest enemy. The blow lands, and the hand writhes around on the ground in what you can assume is pain.

With nothing threatening her, the first civilian makes her escape, running off past the Fist back towards Haggard's Inn.

DH2 retaliates against the monk Nikolai by launching itself into the air and clawing at this throat! Luckily for the half-elf, it flies past his head, landing back on the ground for another attack.

The other two hands scramble up quickly, both launching themselves in to attack! Linden is their targets this time. They miss! (Attack: 7)

PC2 decides to stick to a simple target, tearing into the flesh of the civilian, an older man who seemed to have trouble defending himself. He falls to the ground, bleeding from a wound in his neck, and the corpse turns its attention towards the Fist.

Cameron's shot flies wide yet again. (I applied the damage to DH 1. Forgot to post it in Round 1.)

William moves forward, splashing acid on the nearest corpse for a small amount of damage. (The critical did not confirm.)

Bliss lines up a shot and strikes true as the corpse cries out in pain. It may have seen the hafling, for all the good it will do it.

Prudence moves forward, fighting through her exhaustion to just miss with her elemental ray.

Carver skewers the nearby hand, resulting in his lance being decorated with a twitching, rotting hand.

Nikolai stomps down on the hand, dealing his damage, but it grabs onto his boot as he pulls his leg up and begins to crawl up his calf!

Linden pushes past the hands on the ground to bring the old man back from the brink of death. The cleric sees no change in the corpse in his hands... until he suddenly takes a breath, coughing up what little blood is left in his throat. While he is not conscious, he is certainly not dead. (Normally I would ask for acrobatics checks to move past the hands, but considering their abysmal CMD and your size bonus, you pass without effort.)

DH2 crawls up Nikolai's leg, up to his throat and grasping it tightly! (Attack: 20 -- Damage: 2 -- Grapple Check: 13) Luckily, the monk is able to tear the rotting hand off of his neck before it can get a solid grip.

DH3 charges towards Cameron... but at the last second, it veers off and begins scampering up the nearby building! Bliss sees a disembodied, rotting hand flop down on the roof in front of him!

PC2, displeased that its kill was brought back to life, steps towards [b]Linden[b] to exact its revenge! (Attacks: 15, 8) Fortunately, both of its gnarled claws miss.

..............

Tinker takes the time to think back on how the Double Fist came to be in this predicament. Was it only a few weeks ago that they graduated as Honor Fist and were selected to head a new experimental Double-Fist for special projects? It was only a few days ago the DblFist quietly helped the Quartermaster with the rat problem. Only a couple days ago that they got their assignment to recover a stolen magic item.

Just last night they were attacked in camp by zombies and Sergeant Helmbane was nearly killed. In the wee hours of darkness, they arrived at the village and saw everyone crammed into the inn ready for a seige.

Only minutes ago, they split up from their Sergeants (Trimmack and Helmsbane), to double flank the sound of villagers' screams. And only seconds ago, they ran up, breathless, to spy three villagers being attacked by undead and parts of undead and sprang into action!

Wow!, thinks Tinker, a whole lot has happened in a couple of weeks!

Fighting dead things makes Bliss remember more than he might like, actually. He thinks about when he was a baby harpy, adopted by a liontaur adventurer, kidnapped by a druid villain, and lost in a torn bag of holding. He floated in the shadows between the worlds for a while. Then he was a dead thing in the shadows between the worlds for a while.

"Was I like these things when I was dead?" Bliss wonders. "Usually dead souls get pulled by Woldsblood to Lord Gargul, that's what Aunt Priss said. But there was no Woldsblood in the shadows between the worlds. I don't remember being dead exactly. But it was lonely for a long long time."

The shadow-touched halfling pauses in the moment. His bolt has left his bah, there it is in midair aimed at a dead thing. Would he have wanted someone to shoot a bolt at him when he was dead? When he was dead, if he had met some living people, would he have hated them? Maybe these dead things are just lonely, like he was.

Bliss is just glad that his mom saved him from the shadows. Even though it did get her in trouble with Lord Gargul. Maybe he can make up for that some day.

Nikolai remembers spending so many nights sitting, listening to his father tells stories of bravery and gallantry from his youth as a Mailed Fist Cavalry Officer, Wolf Regiment. He had dreams of charging hords of evil doers, mounted on a magestic horse and clad in shining armor, like his father.

But the saddle didn't take to him very well. However, he was quick with his hands and feet, and now he is living out his own stories, being written at each passing moment. Even though stomping out disembodied hands didn't seem as glorious as a horseback charge with lance, everyone has his own beginning.

Three years of training prepared them for this fight, but it did not prepare them for their ethical dilemma. Their orders were to find the stolen magic item, recover it and return it with haste. It did not include risking their lives to save the village from the undead and perhaps causing the failure of their mission!

Somehow they needed to weave finding the magic item and saving the village into one.
That, their training did not prepare them for.

Cameron strikes his target with ease.

Carver yells at the child to leave, but in doing so causes himself to miss.

Prudence fires another ray, but cannot seem to find the target. The hands are skittish and quick.

Linden channels energy to damage the undead and heal his allies.

Tinker prepares himself for any other undead that may appear in the area.

Nikolai succeeds in draining what little life was left from the crawling hand.

William calls for his friend to get the old man, but is distracted when he fires at the remaining corpse.

Bliss steps back and nails the hand, but does not succeed in destroying it.

PC2 goes to bite at the centaur Linden and succeeds! As it does so, the cleric feels a cold sensation begin to sweep through his body, not unlike the mushroom tea he is so fond of... Linden manages to keep himself moving, but suddenly feels sluggish and a bit sick.

Cameron realizes why the civilians have been rooted in place, but is too distracted to hit his target. He does not see the sergeants in the immediate area.

Prudence steps back to get a better angle and manages to find her target this time, scorching the hand to a pile of ash.

Carver yells for his ally to stands aside...

...and William acquiesces. The centaur gallops forward, ramming his weapon through the creature's chest and letting it drop to the ground, limp and quite dead.

Tinker moves forward to defend his ally, but quickly realizes that the fight is over.

Bliss steps back to fire a shot, but his sorceress friend has already killed it. The halfling gets to keep his ammo.

Nikolai is ready for more action, but finds himself without any action to be had.

The Fist is left staring at a small child, unable to move, and a slowly stirring old man. "Thank you, thank you," he mutters to Linden as the cleric helps him up. "Please, let me return the favour." He places his hand on the centaur's chest and he can feel the illness seep from his body and flow into the old man's hand. He smiles up at Linden and nods before offering to take the child back to Haggard's Inn. (I misread the power of that creature, so deus ex machina, poof, it's gone!)

Those that could not hear them before can easily hear them now. The Fist stays together, arriving on the scene in a group. Prudence notices two undead in the adjacent alleys, easily pointing them out to her allies. (Stealth: 16)

Cameron fires once more at the skeleton, but it flies through the creature's ribs.

Nikolai sees that his centaur friend is in trouble and moves forward to give him some help. Looking around, the monk spots another zombie lying in wait in an alley.

Bliss fires at the zombie nearest his larger friend, scoring a hit! The creature seems to be on its last legs, so to speak.

Prudence fires at the creature, but it ricochets off of the wall behind it.

William lets hic celestial hound tear into the creature in front of it, driven forward by otherwordly forces. With a dart of acid, the creature falls to the ground, writihing for a moment before laying still.

Carver strikes at the faster zombie attacking him, driving it to the ground with a series of blows that leave it decimated!

Tinker tells the others to help with the other monsters. He strikes out with his dwarven weapon, bring the creature down swiftly!

Linden urges his allies forward as well, smashing the skeletons ribs with his morningstar. Still, the creature surges forward.

Unfortunately, the civilians are not holding up as well. C1 and C3 both fall to the creatures, and C4 suffers another blow. He also returns one, slamming into SK2 with a woodaxe. It is at this point that Nikolai recognizes him as Guy, the other guard who helped them protect the stable. When he sees the half-elf, his eyes go wide. YOu can see blod flowing down his face from a large cut on his forehead as he calls out, "Nikolai! Help me!"

Cameron steps forward, hoping to distract the newest abomination with his attack.

Prudence also takes a step forward, but isn't as lucky with her attack.

Bliss fires another shot, pegging the zombie between its eyes and watching it tumble to the ground, finally at rest.

Carver runs to the aid of their young friend, decimating the skeleton with a single blow!

Tinker means to save his friend and fellow guard, but his centaur friend has just done so. Instead, he redirects his attack to the other skeleton, distracting it momentarily from the monk in front of it. (Redirected attack to SK3.)

William also sees that the skeleton is down, and directs all of his attacks at the fresh zombie before them. (Both targets have been downed this round, redirected attacks to FZ2.

Nikolai's first target is downed, so he moves on to the skeleton that was flanking him, dealing a solid blow that shatters the spine of the creature. It tumbles to the ground, useless.

Linden brings his arm back for a mighty swing, tearing through the skeleton's skull, neck, and upper ribs as it falls to the ground in a puff of dust. Never has an undead creature been more dead. (Rolled an attack for you. Natural 20. Confirmed. Decimated.)

Despite their allies dropping like flies, the remaining undead continue on. FZ2 turns to deal with the more prominent threat, slashing at William's dog, and digging into the creature with both claws! (Attacks: 20, 21 -- Damage: 13)

RZ4 looks forward at the small creature that attacked it, letting out a groan and charging towards Cameron with reckless abandon! Luckily, the gets his bow up in time to deflect the attack. (Attack: 17)

Guy looks to Carver with panic in his eyes. The wound on his head, while not fatal, definitely hurts. There is one civilian remaining -- a young woman wielding a frying pan. With the combined efforts of the Double Fist, the zombies crash to the ground, unmoving and finally dead. A round is done where weapons are put through skulls to ensure death, where Guy approaches Carver, breathless. "Thank you," he manages to gasp. "You saved my life out there."

"Prudence!" The sorceress looks up to see a familiar face. The sister who worked in the kitchens is the woman wielding a frying pan, apparently the only weapon she could get her hands on. She dashes up to Pru, tears in her eyes as she cries, "Please, please, you have to help him!" In all the panic and confusion, she seems to be unable to form a proper sentence. Guy looks over with a sad look in his eyes and says to Carver, "Her brother was on patrol this morning. She still hasn't found 'im. I promised to come with her, keep her safe, but..." He groans, hefting the axe with his uninjured arm. "Gonna be tough now."

While the group can hear no more screams currently, Guy points down the east road. "He was patrolling on that edge of town. Might take you a couple minutes to get there, but..." He looks past the centaur to the crying girl, still clutching a frying pan. He then turns to Nikolai with a desperate look in his eyes. "Please, you gotta help her. Her brother's all she got left. I can get her back to Haggard's."

William, Nikolai, Tinker, Cameron, and Carver are all healed for 6HP from Linden's fourth round channel energy.

Monday February 3rd, 2014 3:11:59 AM

Cameron scans the bodies again, finding nothing on them that might be magical. However, on some of the fresher zombies, he does come across some rather fancy-looking gemstones.

Linden looks around at the bodies, not seeing anything at first glance. However, as he goes over medical processes in his head, his eye catches some odd stitching on one zombie. Upon closer inspection, he discovers that it is indeed brought together from different creatures, a mishmash of different creatures brought together to form something rotting and vaguely humanoid.

Tinkerloads his crossbow, ready to head out and find the poor girls' brother.

Carver decides that any direction is better than sitting around. He calls for a march after a minute, setting out at a slow pace so his allies can keep up.

Prudence laments being out of spells. (Did you reset your spells for the day after sleeping at Haggard's? It seems like Prudence hasn't cast 5 1st-level spells yet. Maybe I'm not counting right.

Nikolai tries to break the tension with Guy, who smiles awkwardly. When asked if he recognizes any of the zombies, the young man looks down at the corpses doubtfully. "I don't even know how many came from our graveyard. Sure, some dead folk came back to life, but no since we started burning the bodies. Even if I could see their faces... I might not recognize them." Most of the zombies, even the fresher ones, are scarred and disfigured beyond recognition.

William runs through his spells, remembering the gift he received from his uncle before leaving the Citadel. While he may not know any magic, the man does know his gifts.

Bliss scrambles onto Mookie's back after refreshing his spells and sets off above the group.

Thy Fist heads due east along the road as Guy takes the young woman back to Haggard's. No one can hear any more screaming, but occasionally a skeleton or zombie falls upon your path that becomes quickly obliterated. After two minutes of moving, the group turns a corner that looks like many others. The Fist continues to move in the general direction indicated to them by Guy. Suddenly, something stumbles out in front of you all as you grab for your weapons and level them.

"Help me..." A familiar face stumbles out into the light. Prudence immediately recognizes the brother from the inn, double over with one hand on a bleeding wound on his stomach. However, she does not recognize the creature behind him. Standing at least two feet taller than the young man, this creature that was once alive has been stripped off so much flesh that most of its muscles showed, rippling as it jerked back and forth erratically. Its skull is stuck in a sick, permanent smile as it stares at its prey, clicking its teeth together and hissing. Its limbs are long and spindly, but move in an almost hypnotic way.

Cameron levels a prepared shot at the beast, striking it in the chest. It lets out a screech, and like clockwork, zombies begin to pour out of the surrounding alleyways. The work of a Fist is never done. A fresh abomination is seen this time -- a head, completely disembodied, with bats wings sticking out of where the ears should be, screeching and flapping towards the group with a startling speed.

[OOC: There is apparently some confusion about whether we got 8 hours of rest between the zombie fight in the camp and this morning's patrol. I think somebody asked the question via email, but I don't recall it being answered. If we did not get 8 hours of rest, then Pru's spells did not reset, and neither did her Elemental Rays. If we did get 8 hours of rest, please let me know because I've been operating under the assumption that we did not.]

With a full night's rest, a character gains HP equal to their character level, so everyone is healed for another 2HP by the morning. Each character gains 420EXP from the last two scenes -- keep in mind you're only level two and it has to be divided in eight! Tinker is tired with the running fight, but here's the girl's brother and for a wonder he's still alive, if only barely. The others are spreading to cover the flanks, and there isn't anyone to save the young man. So close!

Then the dwarf digs down into a reserve of energy. "Not today. Not now", he growls. Tinker sprints across the street, dropping his crossbow and pulling his Urgosh. Ignoring any thought of defense he leaps between the hurt boy and the monster! From some forgotten well of endurance, he heroically twirls his dwarven urgosh in a defensive pattern to keep the muscle-zombie away!

All PCs received a full night's rest after sleeping at Haggard's. Sorry for any confusion.

Bliss takes a quick shot at one of the undead -- unfortunately, the tiny halfling is finally spotted.

Cameron yells at the young man to run, but he seems unable to hear the halfling. He cannot track the flapping head's erratic movement, and misses by a few inches.

William, horrified by the amount of undead here, calls upon his trusted old friend Eddie the Eagle. The animal's claws rake at the bones, leaving some scratches.

Carver shouts out a few orders, charging forward to strike at one of the flying heads. It screeches as the centaur hits it, trying to stay in the air, but falling to the ground.

Prudence steps next to her allies, loading her crossbow in the process.

Tinker refuses to see another civilian die, charging forward and brandishing his weapon at the strange undead creature heroically!

Linden moves up to help his ally.

Nikolai runs to the east, getting ready for an attack.

FZ1 flaps its way towards Cameron, attempting to slam into the halfling, but missing wildly. (Attack: 8) SK1 also moves towards the archer, reaching out with its claws to swipe at him! It seems these undead are a bit older, however, as they become easier to dodge... (Attacks: 3, 8)

SK2 clambers over towards Carver, provoking an attack of opportunity! (Attack: 18 -- Damage: 10) The skeleton falls to pieces behind the centaur, lying motionless on the cobblestone. FZ2 attempts to smash into Carver, missing as all of its allies have. (Attack: 9)

SK3 swipes at the eagle bothering it with the hilt of a broken sword, but Eddie is clever enough to keep his distance. (Attack: 7)

PZ lashes out with terrifying speed and accuracy, stepping towards Linden, but focusing its attacks on the dwarf, Tinker. One strike finds its way past the dwarf's defences, knocking the wind from his lungs! (Attacks: 18, 8 -- Damage: 9)

Cameron drops his bow in favour of the sword and shield, slashing at the skeleton before him. Unfortunately, the creature barely seems to notice the hit.

William's magically enhanced eagle tears the skeleton apart, almost comically popping the skull off to drop it to the ground where it shatters into a dozen pieces! The wizard himself turns to fire on the skeleton harrying his friend, blasting through the spine with a well-place bolt!

Bliss fires a bolt at the nearest flying zombie, but popping out from behind cover throws his aim off too much.

Carver swings at the flying head, but its erratic movement works to its advantage this time as the lance just misses.

Prudence steps forward, only to see her target fall to pieces. She straightens her aim quickly, managing to hit the flying head with a precise strike! (SK1 is downed, redirected attack to FZ1.)

Linden takes the damage from his dwarven ally, sticking around to help boost his defensive capabilities.

Tinker knows he was struck, but can't seem to find the wound! He quickly presses the advantage, slicing at the horrid creature with a solid blow!

Nikolai also sees that his target is downed, and moves forward to help his larger friend. With a quick roundhouse-kick, the head flies into the wall, falling to the ground never to move again. (Moved Nikolai to final FZ since SK3 was dead.)

FZ1 seems unaware of the fact that it has been hit, or that its completely alone. It continues to assault Cameron, but misses horribly. (Attack: 8)

SteveK's power is out. I have included his actions in this post which I have just added above. The post above will count for SteveK's total for this week.

Cameron strikes at the flying head, dealing heavy damage to one of its wings!

William's pet disintegrates before it can land another attack. The wizards fires at the final flying head, downing it with a well-placed shot.

Carver finally manages to catch the flying skull with his blade, sending it flopping to the ground where it twitches a few times before dying.

Prudence finds her target dead, redirecting her attack to the zombie harassing her allies. Unfortunately, the creature moves so oddly that she cannot predict it, and the bolt misses. (FZ1 is dead, redirected attack to PZ.)

Although he feels the effects of his wounds, Linden continues attempting to support his ally.

Nikolai moves back from the downed skull, keeping an eye out for any more foes. From what the monk can tell, there are no more undead in the immediate region.

Bliss feels comfort in knowing that he will remain quite small for another short period of time.

Tinker lashes out with his urgosh, and is lucky to be holding onto it by the end of the swing.

PZ swings its limbs out so wildly they almost seem to grow. There is an attack on both Tinker and Linden -- the dwarf parries the blow, but the centaur is taken in the ribs by a claw! (Attacks: 11, 21 -- Damage for Linden: 10)

Cameron reloads his crossbow, stepping forward to face their last foe.

William shouts out some words of encouragement, mirroring his halfling ally's strategy. Looking around, he cannot see any other immediate danger -- but that isn't to say that there may not be some somewhere else. The civilian, while he is breathing, is doing so with great difficult. He seems barely able to stand on his own at this point.

Carver calls for his ally to make room for him, swinging at the final zombie and missing.

Prudence joins the reloaded crossbow club.

Tinker steps out of the way of his ally and connects with his attack, tearing a hole in the creature's back with his urgosh.

Linden steps away, healing himself quickly.

Bliss casts a spell allowing him to see the various stages of death around him. As far as he can tell, none of the undead corpses around him are still active. Most of the civilians are beyond saving, but one or two jump out as still alive enough to be rescued. The brother hardly counts as one of these. The witch wonders how the boy is holding himself up with such grave injuries. (Haha, "grave" injuries.)

Nikolai stands his ground, keeping an eye out for any more foes on their way.

PZ looks at its current situation and turns to run, provoking AoO's from Tinker and Carver. The dwarf's swing just misses, but Carver pierces it through the chest before it has the chance to get away.

Greetings and Salutations, i shall now continue in Ian's quest to turn all of you into the Fist's first undead battalion! Bwahahahaha!

Carver comments on one of the undead displaying unexpected signs of intelligence. Carver notices something glinting from one of the heads that was flying about.

Cameron is able to stop the bleeding, though the civilian is still critically wounded.

Bliss agrees with the need to save as many as they can and conducts triage among the not quite dead yet.

Prudence finds the unmistakable aura of magic coming from a necklace worn by the not so dumb undead.

Linden helps look for wounded with the others. As he staggers about he inadvertently kicks one of the once flying heads and spots something glinting as the head rolls across the ground.

William does a cursory search of the bodies. You forgot your perception roll.

Nikolai suggests letting an undead remain animated in the hopes of finding the lair.

Tinker checks his equipment and wonders where their keepers, err sergeants, are.

The Fist is in one piece, mostly, and this last batch of undead has been vanquished. The silence of a battle just ended settles across the area, solemn, and broken by the cries of pain and terror of the wounded. A couple of shutters slowly creak open as some of the townsfolk find their curiosity overcoming their abject terror.

" You lot of onlookers. The undead are gone for the moment and your own friends and neighbors need your aid. Gather them up and get both them and yourselves to the Inn. Haggard and his daughter can provide sanctuary and some healing there. The way is clear. Do it now."
He stops short of berating them as cowards or mentioning that this isn't the Fist's fight but theirs. That wouldn't help matters any.
Once the civilians start helping he examines the large, muscly undead. It had been stitched together, so it didn't go into the ground that way. More evidence that these things are being created, not just appearing randomly. Cameron is more convinced than ever that the stolen book is behind this. Cameron attempts to roust some of the townsfolk to flee their locked homes for the inn. Several stare at him with wide eyes before ducking back into their homes.

A young man opens his door and peeks out, looking about for danger. Seeing only the bloody Fist in the street poking at bodies and parts of bodies, he slips out the door, holding the arm of a young woman, his wife. She has a small bundle held tightly in her arms as the two scurry down the street towards Haggard's.

Prudence helps herself to a necklace glowing by her magicked eyes.

William realizes that nudging a body with the toe of a boot probably doesn't qualify as 'searching.' Before anyone notices, he engages in a somewhat more personal search of one of the zombies. Just under the hairline on the back of the neck he locates a small ruby embedded into the zombie's flesh.

William looks at the necklace Prudence found and correctly identifies it as a necklace. Your character sheet indicates more spells memorized than possible. It does not appear that you have detect magic memorized as it takes 2 of your cantrip slots.

Bliss helps with the wounded and realizes he is nearly out of small bolts.

Nikolai helps with the wounded and considers if the undead came from the cemetary. A typical location to find dead bodies ready for reanimation.

Carver digs a small emerald from the back of a flying head and asks about their origin, having never encountered them before.

Linden also finds a small gem embedded in the base of a skull, a sapphire. He manages to pry it free of the corpse.

Tinker suggests they withdraw to the rendezvous point.

Tinker thinks back to the last words the Double Fist heard from their Sergeants as everyone boiled out of the "Cheerful Stay" at the sound of the screaming less than a half hour ago...

Helmbane pushes his way out the front door, pointing down the road to the right. "Fist, you scout out that way. Trimmack and I will take this direction. Loop around the outside road and meet on the other side, that's an order!" The dwarf runs off, his human counterpart quickly catching up after crying out, "You heard him, get going!"

The dwarf shakes off his reminiscence. "Course there is a rendevous point, Bliss! We loop around the outside road and meet on the other side. If Sergeant's Trimmack and Helmsbane aren't on the far side of this village, we continue around until we find them!"

Hoisting his crossbow, Tinker points the group in the right direction, and impatiently waits for the others to stop looting the bodies and get ready to finish the mission. His fingers itch, wanting to play with a lock instead of the wooden stock of his crossbow.

The party circles around the outskirts of town (which isn't that big to begin with). Not locating the sergeants they follow the advice they gave to the townsfolk and headed for Haggard's.

The sergeants, covered in blood and gore, are sitting at a table discussing their own battle, it appears to be an argument over which of them was more effective. Several villagers warmly welcome the Fist for having saved those they could.

Diplomacy 13
Discipline ingrained after 3 years of training, Cameron does not even acknowledge that it is not his sergeant asking for the report. He snaps to attention and explains the fights as they happened, in order and what he feels they mean. This last part consists mainly of the fact that some or all of the undead seem to be manufactured from several corpses. This leads him to believe someone or someones are making the undead. With the knowledge that the item they are after has passed through here with the shady group about a week ago and knowing the item is a book but not what it does, he can only assume it is being used, possibly tested, by either the thieves or whomever they stole it for.
When he is excused from his report he orders a mead if they have it. Killing undead is thirsty work.
He mentions the gems and necklace to the sergeants only as some loot on the bodies, using whatever slang the Fist would use to speak in front of a client without letting the client know what they were saying. ( I am sure there would be a thing like that, like thieves cant . We should know it after 3 years of training) The last thing he wants to do is encourage the townsfolk to fight these things because they have treasure. Far too many would die that way.

DM Ezra Clarification request: From the notes I received, Sgt Trimmack is senior as Sgt Helmbane is recently promoted. Since one is subordinate to the other, and the chain of command goes up, how would Trimmack not be a superior?

Everyone that has a post for every day gets an extra 7 XP.

Sgt Trimmack commends the group for their actions, while Sgt Helmbane berates them for taking their time.

Sifting through the coins, Trimmack tosses one to Haggard for their stay.

Haggard tries to refuse the payment but relents when Trimmack responds that the Fist always pays its way, just as the Fist expects prompt payment when hired. That said Trimmack looks at the necklace, it's a necklace, and magical? SO what does it do? still waiting on a spellcraft check here

With limited ideas on where to proceed, Trimmack and Helmbane argue on what to do next. Hope mentions a group of men that came through a month before. Haggard and several of the villagers jump in talking about the men. They stayed for one night and left. A few days later the first undead started to attack.

Diplomacy DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { One guy recalls that they were heatedly discussing a book they had with them.}

Diplomacy DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Hope recalls hearing chanting late in the evening after they retired to their rooms.}

It may be this other group has complicated our own mission. I doubt this is the last wave of undead. Sgt Helmbane and I will remain here and secure the village of Cheerful Stay. The lot of you will proceed east and determine if this group is responsible for the undead.

Haggard suggests they check an old decrepit church that is near a cemetary.

Sgt Trimmack and I will work on some basic defenses and militia training for the village. Get some rest and you head out at first light.

Tinker may be a dwarf and a rogue, but neither his passion nor his expertise is with gems. He gives a cursory look to one and then another before shrugging and giving the gems back to Linden. "Not the foggiest idea", he says.

Now that the Double Fist has permission to seek out this group, Tinker has a suggestion. "I'm thinking that the Church may have more likely answers than the Cemetery. At least it should be easier to search."

Whichever way the group decides, Tinker will go along.

The church hasn't been used for sometime, I'm not even sure which god the church was following. It's been laying in ruins for centuries. We don't even use that cemetery anymore. Haggard sets down a pitcher of ale for the Fist.
'Twas to some god Melinoe, tha's wha' I hear two of 'em talkin' 'bout. Said the man sitting to the side, looking at the dregs of his ale.
Who's Melinoe? No, it be Ga'al, spit, they was worshiping! Damn 'eartseeders! His brother counters from across the table.

Another townsfolk jumps in, I guess it could be them heart-killers, they travel in sixes.

Haggard waves them off go back to yer drink. It was obvious they served the vindiccator. They was obviously religious types, but they was hiding their true allegiance. Everyone knows that Jancassians don' advertise.

After some discussion, Bliss figures out that the necklace provides the wearer with skin as tough as leather, making it harder to be hurt. Highlight to display spoiler: {+1 natural armor amulet}
The gems are worth 2k.

If you are that close to leveling, then the 7 exp will get you there, if not, then don't worry about it. We follow the medium track for leveling.

My understanding of military structure is that when two groups are assigned to a task, one of the leaders will become an overall leader, the other his exec. If the DFist broke into two task groups, each sgt would likely take their original group, but when operating combined, one must report to the other, and that is generally based on seniority in position. I don't know how it was operating before, but this is how I will be playing them going forward.

Tinker knows just as much about any of the gods as the casual person on the streets. That is, he knows their common names and the like, even using them to swear or color his speech at times, but not knowing much more than that. "Matters less to me about who they worshiped than what they were doing. Maybe this will give us some more clue to where the magical item we are supposed to recover is. Right?'

With Nickolai saying the Church is fine, Tinker also counts Linden as interested in the Church, and assumes Prudence and Bliss will go with the majority. The Sergeants are staying in the Village allowing the Double Fist to investigate on their own, which makes Tinker look to the Halfling Cameron or the Centaur Carver who have been the two who have historically been stepping into the leadership roles when the sergeants are out...

Is the contract for recovery only sergeants? Will destruction count as a close second? Because if they want to play like this then burning the abandoned church around them would be far easier. The book might survive. if it is magic enough."

Steelshaper has the right of it. The book is our contract. Trusting that the book not be harmed by burning down a building would be an unwise choice. Let's try not to do that. Trimmack considers the conversations bouncing around, Nikolai has the right of it, these were too fresh for an old and unused graveyard. But that group is worth tracking down.

Hope comes and delivers a large platter of food to the table. Trimmack grins and winks at her, it's about time you lot got some more independent operational time. Therefore, Sgt Helmbane and I will stay here and guard the village against any additional undead. You are hereby ordered to locate the old church, check it out. See if there is any information on the group that went before. I know the trail is cold, so you have 3 days before I expect to see you back here.

We have to learn how to work without spells. At any given battle, we might be without our spellcasters for one reason or another.

As the sun just begins to peak over the distant hills the Fist assembles before the Inn and organizes themselves to set out. Hope hands each a small satchel our thanks and may Domi watch over ye this day. Break fast and some trail food for yer trip. Each bag contains a steaming and stuffed roll, freshly backed. Hope must have risen very early to prepare this for you. A mouthwatering smell of herbs and spices, assails you. Biting into the delicacy reveals the roll is stuffed with egg, cheese and ham.

A slice of hard cheese, a roll, and some fruit is also in each satchel. Enough to get you through lunch. Maybe the church is further than you expected.

As the Fist travels through the village, every home they pass has the residents standing quietly in front of their doors watching the procession. Even the children stand quietly and watch. Are they watching saviors leaving on quest, or men heading for their doom?
