Heroes Day Off (co-DM SteveK)
Wednesday February 12th, 2014 10:41:55 PM

The group is able to visit any of a number of Catacombs outlets in the magical city; it is almost every other neighborhood that sports an opening to the ultimate magical merchant!

Tink is shown the Tower and learns more about the Iron Adventurers, Hook City, and Shirtless Garret. Bosk makes mention of a Protector Group and may have to explain that this is an honorable job in Hook City and not an extortion racket.

Sesha pays a visit to her sage who doesn't have a great deal for her, but perhaps it is enough? He hands her a small scroll that has his notes in neat lines. It seems that Serenbeth has links to both Jancassis and Wardd; both gods who have representatives in the Iron Adventurers...

- Before the rise of the Gods of Testing, the Serenbeth Maidens (Serenbeth, Jantierri, Jancassis, and Karinthis), were responsible for all the goals and ambitions of mankind. These gods were the patrons of riches, wisdom, happiness, revenge, ambitions, daydreams, marriage, and all the rest that mortals might seek. In the Year of Ascension, all died except Jancassis, now the god of vengeance.
- Wardd, god of Luck, was closest to Karinthis, Donyra and Serenbeth before all three were slaughtered mercilessly by Marteaus during the Godswar - the War of Ascension. Despite this, Wardd later joined Marteaus and is now a God of Testing.

Restlin goes to the Temple of Wardd and tries his luck. Because the Iron Tower is in SouthHook and the Temples are all on the Marble Causeway in NorthHook, this means that Restlin has to cross the river, either by ferry or by climbing the Stair and walking across the huge market that is on the Bridge.
Even if he goes by ferry, it is impossible for him not to look up in the sky and see the four HOOKS that float immobile in the sky. From those four HOOKS, a maze of cables, ropes, and vines hold aloft the gigantic Bridge. The pride of Hook City and its namesake, floating against all gravity. On his walk, he hears people talking excitedly about the upcoming Day of Faith.

Garret finds his artist who promises to make a couple of examples for the Halfling to look at; in a couple of days. Orders are stacking up, the half-orc woman explains, but she will have them ready for him and his friends in time for the Day of Faith.

(Sergeant Capon will arrive tomorrow's post)

Having never heard of this 'Capon' person before, Tink is curious about his arrival. Is it true that he has no sense of humor? Perhaps he will prove a way to assess Restlin's sense of humor? She smiles to herself at the thought.

She is quite well travelled for a halfling, and tries to recall if she has heard tell of this 'Day of Faith' (Knowl Local: 13, Knowl Relig: 27)

As any traveller knows, the way to check the pulse of a city is to visit a tavern. Tink does just that. She tries to find one with more than a few patrons in attendance and walks in as if she has not a care in the world. She expects to see minor crimes wherever she goes, but those are for the local constabulatory to deal with. She doesn't interfere in their affairs if it can be avoided.

For now, she is just here to gamble. Win or lose she doesn't care. Today is about getting a feel for the neighborhood, listening in to any news, and making local contacts. She only bets the minimum, and any winnings she happens to walk away with will find their way to someone less fortunate. (Prof Gambler: 11)

She is sure to return to the tower before dinner, unsure if they eat as a group, whether kitchen duties are shared, and so forth.

A lifelong resident of Hook City, surely Restlin knows what this Day of Faith business is all about! He wonders what preparations they'll need to make. It would be unseemly for the Iron Adventurers not to take part in any festivities.

Sesha was floored by the little bald man. As best as she could remember, Restlin was affiliated with Wardd, and Wardd was affiliated with her Little Spirit, and now she had the names of four sister gods, none she had heard of... And one of those were alive. If Restlin couldn't help her.. a follower of Jancaissis might?

It should only be a small step now!

Putting her excitement aside, Sesha hurries off to the Catcombs. A few of her companions had requested some potions, and she had some other things to do before Capon arrived.

Garret leaves the shop, satisfied that they will make some progress on his special gift soon. He wanders about town a bit, stopping to greet people where he can, and where they are friendly. He finds more than few different places to eat, and samples the fare at every single one.

As he wanders, he too, takes a quick side trip to the catacombs and comes back with the same amulet as before, yet this one is a little shinier.

Beriothian heads to a local tavern to get a beer and discuss the best things to do during the festival with the locals before heading to the catacombs to purchase a cheap staff and a few other things. He hopes that the locals can provide some tips, such as best viewing locations for certain activities.

Sergeant Capon and the Day of Faith (co-DM SteveK)
Thursday February 13th, 2014 10:15:40 PM

Catacombs shopping occurs without a hitch as those heroes with coins to burn pay a visit.

Katinka looks for a tavern, but immediately finds some difficulties. The first is that there doesn't seem to be anything as vulgar as a 'tavern' in SouthHook, the richest, most powerful part of Hook City (and that is saying something!) When she does find a Club that caters to arcane casters, she finds that she can't pay for even the simplest drinks without Hook City's own special money, chits.

Almost all trade within the city is done with Chits. Chits are the magical rate of exchange within the city. One chit is equal to the casting of one Cantrip Spell. This dates from the very first Day of Faith when the gods rewarded those there and their descendants with the inherent ability to cast one form of Cantrip. Abhorring money, the people of Hook City developed a means of exchange based on the Cantrip that each citizen could cast. This tradition lasts until this day. Chits

Finally, Katinka is directed to the poorest section of Hook City that is still within the walls, Labor Town. These labors, craftsmen, and lower class citizens are so poor they even will accept common silver and gold! The place she finds her gambling and the people who are at least willing to treat her like she is a person, and she has a good time.

A lifelong resident of Hook City, Restlin is able to fill in the gaps of everyone's bits of knowledge about the Day of Faith.

- The Hooks hang in the air without any support, are not affected by any known magic, and are (so far) completely indestructible. Most known Teucri ruins are unaffected by normal gravitational stresses and can only be destroyed by certain things or events. And if the Hooks aren't Teucri made, I'll eat my hat!
- The magic of Hook City is so strong that anyone born in the city can cast one Cantrip Spell, and is the basis of the Chit system that is the money of Hook City
- The Hooks hold by their mighty power The Bridge, which is the richest and most prestigious market The Wold has ever known. The Hooks are the most visible artifacts and proof that Hook City is the most magical in the Wold.
- The Day of Faith is accompanied by a week long festival and people from all over flock to Hook City.
- On the Day of Faith, everyone in the city gets on the Bridge and at the same time.... JUMPS THREE TIMES. Nearly always, something special happens, and it is something different every year! This is Faith in the Hooks and the magic of the Tecuri that is part of every life in Hook City.
...............................

To the minute the next morning, Sergeant Capon, shoes and buttons polished mirror-bright, back straight, scroll tucked in under one arm at the absolutely correct angle.... knocks on the Iron Tower door. "Iron Adventures, Protector Group of Iron Tower Neighborhood, your Heroes Day Off is complete and, representing Hook City, welcome you back to the City. As your liaison to Hook City, my time is available to you to support any official governmental actions. In return, as always, Hook City may call upon you for your specialized abilities pending your acceptance on any mission."

Not sitting until offered a seat, the VERY correct Sergeant Capon even sits in a position of attention!

"I LIKE this guy" Tink is immediately impressed with how prim and proper the Sergeant is. Curious about the extent of his etiquette, Tink rises to walk to the window. She was looking for some excuse to stand from a sitting position simply to check if the good Sergeant will also stand when a lady does.

She takes the opportunity however to look out the window. Did the Sergeant come via any transport? Is anyone outside, accompanying him?

So far she is certainly enjoying Hook City. It has more than lived up to her expectations.

He smiles. It's genuine; he doesn't dislike Capon. "Glad to be back, Sergeant. There's tea made, and we still have some breakfast if you're hungry.

"I don't think you've been introduced to Tink here. She comes to us via our former companion Cyniq. I believe she was here last time you paid us a visit.

"I won't speak for the rest of my companions, but I personally have no business with Hook City I require your assistance with. Is there anything we can do as a registered Protection Group here in the city during the upcoming festivities? I had assumed we'd be travelling to the bridge with the rest of the Iron Square residents & merchants, but perhaps you had something else in mind?"

He sits calmly sipping his tea. It's something he does every morning, but it's made somewhat more difficult this morning by the fact that he is forcing his best behavior on himself. It's times like these he desperately misses Zeoll.

ooc: I know I didn't allow 24 hours, but this is a lot of backstory and I didn't want too many getting bored. :-)

Sergeant Capon indeed rises when Katinka or Sesha stands, maintaining the most proper decorum at all times. Despite his complete over formality on almost any occasion, the others in the Iron Adventurers know that the guardsman can be counted on to do what is right and to do his duty. Katinka can easily find out that Sergeant Capon has acquired rooms in an apartment building on Iron Tower Square. This allows him to be close to the Iron Adventurers without being invasive, and also allows him to be able to report as needed without bothering/alerting the adventurers.

Upon being introduced to Katinka, Sergreant Capon begins recording. "That is one duty I can perform for the Iron Adventurers, working with the government to assure your membership records are up to date. Katinka will be added and Cyniq and Caius are to be removed. Because of my contacts, I will ensure that this happens quickly."

"As to any requests by Hook City, there currently are none. The Iron Adventurers are free to prepare for the Day of Faith with the neighborhood. Many I am sure will also be around NorthHook and the Marble Causeway to see the entertainers that have been flooding the city. There are even more entertainers in MudTown that have not yet received permission to enter. Why, there is no telling what may be seen!"

I have always been fascinated by the tecuri technology, and would love to be part of the magic. I suggest we all get our shopping and training in as quickly as possible so that we can meet up together at the bridge. Turning to Capon he asks, I know it can take quite a while for visitors to get through the gates on the best of days, can you tell us how much time we have to the big event?

After meeting with Capon Bosk finishes errands, make makes sure his Catacombs order is complete, and tries to get his WLA training in as much crafting as possible before the big day.

Day of Faith and Festivities (co-DM SteveK)
Monday February 17th, 2014 10:52:27 AM

There are several questions about the Day of Faith and what will be going on. Sergeant Capon tries to answer to the best of his ability. "It is seven days from this morning to the Day of Faith. Already entertainers, merchants, travelers and many others are seeking entrance into Hook City so they may be present on the Bridge for the Day of Faith. It is a great opportunity for those less fortunate than the citizens of Hook City to see many wonders."

"If this is like year's past, many entertainers will never be able to get inside Hook City and will have already started to pitch their tents and wares out at MudTown. MudTown is also unseasonably dry in the week leading up to the Day of Faith, so the entertainers and travelling merchants will have good weather."

"As to past years, almost all the time several of the cables snap, and the Climbers have to repair the cables. Many years ago, several of the gods appeared and began fighting in the skies above Hook City. Only a couple of years ago, another Avatar appeared and nature ran amok. Once the Day of Faith was celebrated by a chariot race around the city which was won by ... I can't remember."
Sense Motive DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { The hero has a hunch that Sergeant Capon really doesn't remember. He's telling the truth as he knows it.}

As to what the others are doing in the week in preparation for the Day of Faith, Sergeant Capon is to the point. "Why don't you ask them? I would bet a week's pay that some are planning a sweep of the entertainments in and outside the City. It is a great excuse for a holiday!"

Restlin's never really thought about how the Climbers must feel about this holiday. His old companion Beltrin used to be a climber, that much he knows.

Whatever happened to him anyway? He just vanished one day...and after all the times he called ME flighty. Hmph.

The wizard finds it odd that Capon can't remember something like that, but doesn't give it much thought (Restlin can't fail that sense motive check).

"Well, if it's still a week away, then we have time to prepare. What do you fine people say about hitting up the local vendors around here and see if there's interest on parading to the festival as a group? You know, march under a common banner, show some solidarity. People LOVE that stuff, especially around these parts. Capon here probably has other priorities that day, but if not it would be great if he could join along as well."

Beri looks at Sergeant Capon and can't tell whether or not he actually remembers. Of course, not being able to remember the results of any sporting event longer than the night before, the druid decided he can't really make any assumptions either way.

Sesha also has a bit of work ahead of her. She had recieved a number of requests from Iron Adventurers and spends much time trying to make herself useful. She also makes time for Restlin. She is a little excited when she approaches the Mage Priest.

"Restlin! I have wonderful news! The scribe I hired has been able to narrow down the search for Little Spirits name to four sisters. Have you heard of the Serenbeth Maidens? According to the scribe they were friends to Wardd before they died. Serenbeth, Jantierri, Jancassis, and Karinthis were their names .. and I know that it cannot be Jancassis, because she lives. Do you or the others of Wardd know which of the other three might be most likely to be little spirit? When I bonded her, she greatly boosted my healing magics... perhaps one of Serenbeth, Jantierri, or Karinthis gave the healing domain? I MUST know I must!"

Sesha stamps a foot at Restlin and bounces, white hair all a mess. If he does't react quickly or share her excitement, she will poke/pinch/prod him until he does!

Day Two of the Festival (co-DM SteveK)
Tuesday February 18th, 2014 5:49:26 PM

Restlin suggests hitting up the local vendors to see if there's interest on parading to the festival as a group. This idea gets quick support from Katinka, Beri, and Bosk.

Garret seems excited about the entertainers and sampling food with Anrete. The barbarian, however, clearly feels any food not caught and prepared himself lacks a certain... something.

Katinka also wants to exchange some of her metal wealth for chits, and can easily find a reputable money lender by asking a hero or neighbor. The neighbors in the immediate square nearly unanimously adore the Iron Adventurers, many of them (like the Brodery's) directly saved and becoming Hook City citizens because of the Iron Adventurers' patronage. Sergeant Capon declines politely, citing that he is on duty. The older members of the IA may see the Sergeant wince as if remembering the first time he was invited to eat at the Tower and meeting the two ghost girls...

Beriothian asked about how dangerous the snapping cables are for the people. The Sergeant shrugs and confirms Bosk's assumption, adding that no one has died because of snapping cables as far as he can remember.

You said that the cables snapped, is it dangerous for the people on the bridge when that happens?

Bosk thanks Capon for his hard work and hopes he enjoys the festival, and plans the rest of the week to Craft and take in the sights.

OOC: We will assume all Crafting is complete and add to your PC Sheet even though it is not a complete week. This will be easier to account than trying to remember which item is ready which day, and nicer than saying nothing is compete until the end of the week.

Sesha is excited when she approaches Restlin with her wonderful news. Unfortuneately, Restlin comes up with a complete blank. Bosk fares better, recognizing the names as gods who had died during the Year of Ascension, yet they were so linked it is hard to tell which was which. Maybe Restlin is right, a trip to the Temple would yield more success.
......................

In going out of the Iron Tower, it seems that preparations have already started. Ribbons and pop-ems, masks and banners, food and drink are selling freely in front of Vennie's Trading Company. Clarissa Brodery has organized the youngsters about the Apothecary, the Gilded Boar and the Dance Hall to sew little streamers and bells on their clothing. The suggestion by the Iron Adventurers to parade to the Bridge is met with great cheers! Later, Mara Weaver admits that people had been thinking about it but didn't want to interfere with the heroes. Having them as part of the neighborhood parade will be most welcome!

Most of the heroes of Iron Adventurers make mention about going out and looking at the entertainers and sampling the food. With such crowded conditions, JimBim suggests that it would be a VERY GOOD idea if the heroes went in a group. "You could take the children to see some of the sights, too. I'm sure they couldn't be safer than with you."

It takes forever to reach the temple. When they get there, he stops with one hand on the door. "Sure you're ready for this, little witch? You never know what's on the other side of this door." Without waiting for a response, he violently throws it open, letting the vacuum created pull him inside.

"Good morning, Temple of Wardd!" he shouts to no one in particular. "Anybody here a religious scholar, amateur or otherwise?"

If no one comes forward, he'll look around and see if anyone looks learned.
Perception = 27 - Glad I'm getting these crappy rolls out of the way before a fight breaks out.

Sesha peeps out from behind Restlin, a small and nervous girl hiding behind a small and proudly confident Mage-Priest.

She hadn't been sure what to expect. She hadn't seen Restlin in religious contemplation before, but once he announced himself, she felt dumb for assuming Restlin would be anything but Restlin.

"All the subtlety of a Fireball, Mage-Priest. It's why I think I kind of like you."

She grins, then slips around him and inside of the temple.

Resigned that he will probably not be wacking anything, Anrete tags along with the rest of the companions and grabs the occasional treats.

Bosk looks to JimBim and then at the small children. They will be safer with us... he is not sure if that is the case, but he owes the Brodery family more than they know. True, JimBim was his secret supplier of natural poisons that are so coveted by an Avenger, but there was more to it. Heather, the former head of the family had brought Bosk and several of the Iron Adventurer's to The Edge and back. He saw the birth of the cosmos and the end of existence and was able to experience all manner of things from giving birth to being eaten alive. She had been the first spirit Gargul and Jancassis let him Avenge and help to cross over to the Land of Rest...and even now her holy symbol...her own eye plucked from her head with her own hands...served as his holy symbol, the real, living 3rd eye on his forehead. How could he turn down such a simple request.

Of course we will take the children with us. It promises to be an exciting event!
