(Brock) Jozhur AC20/15/15--CMD 20--HP 44/49 DEAF
Friday February 14th, 2014 1:22:05 AM

"Thank you very much Kane. I was in need of a bath too."

Jozhur is very curious about the nights events and the disappearance of the innkeeper, but it has been a very long night. He tells the others to wake him if find something that they "need a key for".

DM Shawn - One Rainy Night  d20+2=4 ; d20+8=11 ; d20+10=19 ;
Friday February 14th, 2014 6:34:14 AM

Zeoll saddened by the thought of leaving his nest, decides to stay up in the main room and sing songs and tell stories to help those who are frightened. [OOC: Zeoll is renewing his Spread the Word power, for anyone who wants a +2 on their next saving throw and did not already get the bonus once this module!]

Kane is happy at the success of his friend Jozhur being able to hear, but gets an uncomfortable feeling when being spoken to by the elfblood captain. He agrees with the watches and goes about setting it up but keeps from speaking to the Elfbloods.

Magana gives a great diplomatic reply to the possible job. Captain creel eyes the minotaur for a few seconds before sneering back " Aye... not like you have the sea legs anyway. " He turns away, heading for his room before looking over his shoulder, "You can stay here with the lot of them, but I am a Captain and sleeping in my bed tonight, not in some common room with some common people."

Sam, Terser, Jozhur and Coer all decide to head up to their rooms. Coer figures the table in front of the door will be enough to hold. Before Terser is able to fall asleep, Sam hums a tune, disappears from site and heads out in the hall, and heads for the innkeepers room.
Once inside, he does a full search but turns up nothing that would not be found in an innkeepers bedroom.

Aexana takes the theory a little further, and shape shifts into a little monkey. She finds a nice place to lay down in the closest, figuring she will awake when the innkeeper returns.... hopefully at least...

..................................................................................................................................................

Nobody (except Captain Creel) has been able to go back to sleep. The thunder booms on a regular basis, and yet--in spite of that--everyone huddled in the public room of the tavern can hear the maddeningly-slow and inexorable ticking of the large pendulum clock by one of the fireplaces... even those in their rooms(and closet), can hear the pendulum swing through the thin walls of the inn.

...tick...tick...tick...

Behind the constant rains and stone-thick clouds, the lightening of the gun-metal gray sky is all but imperceptible. Still, dawn has come, and Gullport should be rising as well...

It is not.

Even as the first few moments of morning creep past, the town remains utterly still. No doors slam, no shopkeepers huddle against the rain as they rush to start the new day's business. Other than yourselves and your fellow outsiders, not a soul stirs. The only signs of life are a few large gulls, undaunted by the rains, that perch among the town's roofs, like flies converging on a bloating corpse.

As Zeoll tells stories to calm any who cannot sleep, does he notice the door being opened as by an invisible creature? Well, the old liontaur's perception check is a 23.

If he does, can he tell that it is his new friend Sam? He has the scent ability, which says ... "A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. ... Creatures with the scent ability can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights."

Survival used for "tracking" as a best option to use scent, if needed: 17.

If he does notice who it is, he'll use that moment to tell an exciting part of the story, the better to distract watchers from whatever it is Sam is doing.

"Curse this blasted clock. Is there anything magical about this thing?"

Jozhur looks the clock over for traps or anything else unusual (perception: 18)

Could the clock be heard earlier in the night? If it appears to be a normal clock, Jozhur opens it up and begins working to stop the ticking...(disable device: 28)

"This place is beyond creepy. We need to go check things out. Can someone go make sure all the ships are still in place?"

Spire peers out the window, narrowing his eyes. "Where is everyone?" he whispers. Oh no... Spire is suddenly reminded of an old cult the group dealt with upon arriving at Bonetown. The elf tries to remember if they occupy this area, or if the Beastmasters have any strange rituals that may have something to do with this. (Religion: 28, Geo: 21, History: 29)

Sam (David W): 14/12/13 -- CMD 13 -- HP 42/42
Friday February 14th, 2014 1:43:59 PM

After reporting back to Terser, Sam does everything he can to fall asleep. He quietly hums lullabies to himself (weird...right?) and pulls the covers over his head. The bard even considers casting "hideous laughter" on himself repeadidly in an attempt to wear himself out. His eyes dart over to the shadowed image of Terser, who also seems to be tossing and turning.

"Terser, I can't sleep! Maybe if you'd stop trying to get comfortable and just go to sleep, I'd be able to sleep too! I hear all of your armor belts and buckles scratching on the floor every time you move! You're driving me crazy!"

Sam climbs back out of bed after a few more, futile moments. He casts "dancing lights" to provide a light source in the dark. One of the glowing orbs hover just over Terser's face for a moment or two as Sam leaves the room. As he makes his way to the common area, he looks to see who is amoung the insomniacs.

"This place is the worst! I've slept better in the badlands of the Scab than here in these stupid beds!"

Kane' Ma'Kai (SteveK) AC13/ T13/ F10/ CMD 17) HP 47/47
Friday February 14th, 2014 6:14:23 PM

Kane', grainy-eyed, welcomes the dawn. Anything to see a lightening to see that the sun has returned whether raining or not. Yet the disappearance of the innkeeper is worrisome, and the lack of any movement of any other villager is stranger still.

"Could they have all been driven into the harbor? Or knew we would be affected and so ran to safety, or even are the cause of the singing themselves?" The half-elf shakes his head, it is all speculation at this point. But there is a way to see if one of his thoughts are true or not... Captain Coer, we can go to the Harbor to see if the townsfolk are there and to ensure the ships are still at port. This place is strange enough that I am worried that our ships may have disappeared as readily as the townsfolk."

Kane' is prepared to go where Jozhur goes to keep together.
...............

ooc: Question for the DM and Kane's responsibility to Jozhur. Non-lethal damage is not the same as lethal damage; does Kane' have to heal non-lethal damage quickly too, or only lethal?

Zeoll dozes as the night wanes, and wakes tired but alert -- he may not have gotten enough sleep to regain the spell he used yesterday, but otherwise he is okay.

He suggests to all his friends, "Maybe we should searrch everry house?"

He uses his nose (scent) and his eyes and ears (perception 24) to see if there ever even were people here. Maybe they were all hallucinations, illusions, or visions.

Terser swats at the light in his face briefly, only grunting at Sam's outburst. By the sound of it, no one is resting well. Well, no point scratching up the floorboards, I suppose. He gets up and follows Sam down to the common room, then heads into the kitchen to see if he can find any good ale, or something to calm the nerves.

Spire's mind goes racing back to the previous dealings with a cult, and begins trying to remember every detail of the beastmasters. He doesn't recall anything in this area, nor if this is is something they do.

Magana gets her weapon before settling in for the night.

Terser makes his way down to the kitchen, and finds some fish stew and plenty of ale behind the bar.

Zeoll checks to make sure the staff were not illusions. Little things around the room like half drank water flagons and the lingering smell of the innkeeper assure him they were in fact real.

Jozhur is so annoyed by the clock that he pulls it off the wall and begins examining it. He searches it for traps before dismantling it. All the pieces are showing it to be a normal clock, and after a few twists and snaps, the ticking is no more.

Coer heads behind the bar and helps himself and others to some breakfast. Warm fish stew is still on the low flames of the fire.

After a restless night Sam makes his way down to the common room, annoyed and letting anyone know about it.

Aexana stats hidden as a monkey, including trying to drown out the clock with a sock. To her dismay the inn keeper never shows back up.

Kane makes a suggestion to go out in the elements, and look around. Checking out the ships and to see if the townsfolk are at the harbor.

---------------------------------

While everyone is making plans as to venture out or not, Terza makes her way to the group at the table.

"I realize your group is a little more special then the normal group here and I would like to offer you some reward to ensure the safety of my group and myself, and not to mention to find out what is happening about town. I didn't bring much with us, but I can offer you 1500 gold as a payment to your group. "

The elfblood captain steps forward after she speaks " I'll throw in another 500 gold, making it 2000, and I'll stay here at the inn with my crew and protect everyone. I'll make sure no harm comes to any of your ships crew, or any others while in this inn."

Both Tezra and Phen turn to look at Captain Creel, as if to say it is his turn to kick in. Any hints are lost on the man, as he chews on a splinter he peeled off one of the tables.

" Don't give me those pouty eyes Tezra, I saw this group in action last night. They don't need any money, and should be doing it for the good of man. Isn't that right" he says, as he turns to the group " you'll save me and my boys and not worry about making any money off of it, and doing it for the good of man. In fact you should go check on my boat, and make sure it is port, and I can sail us all off this dreaded island. For a fee of course."

"A tithe of a fisherman and a tithe of a king is the same measurement", quotes Kane' in a thoughtful tone of voice. Remembering his warrior ancestors (and perhaps, the nights sleep making him bold), the half-elf summons his courage enough to look Terza, Phen, and Creel in the eye. "More like we will scour your ship to release any prisoners or treasure that could be put to better use elsewhere. Captains Terza and Phen have made their offers. I would not be surprised that Captain Coer will accept, and also take your share out of your ship."

Kane' is sure that some of his friends will understand and certainly the canny Captains of the other ships will understand as well. A poor man with only a gold piece to his name, would tithe a single silver, but a king's ransom, a tithe would be 10% of his great wealth. For the captain, selling his ship would net 25,000gp, and a tenth of that would be 2,500gp.

Kane' is suggesting to his Captain and Lionfish crew that if Captain Kreel doesn't provide an offer, that the Lionfish simply take 2,500gp of goods from Kreel's ship in payment!

Well, something is out there that needs investigating, and standing about bandying words isn't getting it done. Sam and I will take that 2000 gold and figure out what's what. If the Lionfish crew wants to come along, I don't mind giving an even share if they carry their weight.

As for your ship, Creel - what's on it is none of my business, but if we happen upon her in the course of figuring out what's going on and there's things not right there, I'll take it upon myself to correct them. Your gold is yours, but if these folks are right and there are slaves aboard, well, people aren't property, and you can bet they won't be there when you get back.

Aexana too wants to find out where the townsfolk went.

"Time for something different... perhaps I can track the inkeeper either by tracks or scent... dogs 'n wolves might do the trick... and a Wolf will keep me up against that wind..." Aexana explains to her friends.

So Aex once again changes shape (@DM did we get enough sleep to refill our spells and dailies?) only this time she turns into a Wolf.

The Aex-Wolf runs up to the Innkeepers room and takes in the scent of the missing man. Once the scent is well in the wolf's nose she goes downstairs and outside trying to catch the scent on the ground... the winds will probably make this a bit harder but one never knows.

(Wolf scent survival check 31 (forgot the +4 scent check))

Secondly Aex-Wolf checks for tracks... everyone headed out straight to sea... the group didn't encounter anyone else that way. Could it be other tracks heading in different directions can be found?? Tracks that could for instance belong to the townsfolk that took shelter elsewhere...

Kane makes a suggestion to take a payment from Creel's ship when they get to it, Magana doesn't agree and makes mention of it not being the honorable thing to do.

Spire remembers last time he was on a ship, and also warns if he was to find elves on board.

Terser agrees for himself and his brother, to do the task. He also gives Creel a warning, that if they find anything wrong on his ship they will make sure to correct it. Sam is ready to head out the door once Coer clears the table.

Aexana with the aid of Zeoll decided to turn into a wolf, gets the scent of innkeeper and tries to get a trail of the man.

Jozhur stares at Creel, he gets the impression the man is annoyed, but also a little frightened.

Coer wants to work with the brothers, and decides to move the table for everyone.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Once Coer moves the table and opens the door, the outside Wold shows in full force the power it has. The rain is thundering down, at all angles while the air is whipped around in a frenzy. Sam shields his eyes and looks outside, but nothing is catching his eye. The rain and wind whipping around make everything harder to see.

Aexana immediately gets a whiff of the innkeeper, but then her keen nose works against her as she starts to get every other smell off the wind. Fish, mud, rain, the group, the other guests. The wind is so strong it is blowing smells from down by the docks in her face, and she quickly loses track of the innkeepers smell.

"Stop" says Terza, " before you go, I can provide a map of the local area. It was provided to me, and I'll share it with you."

She rolls out the parchment on a table, and begins pointing to places on the map. "This is the inn we are currently in "she says, as her finger tabs the map(1).

You quickly recognize the docks, and the group of trees that Zeoll slept in.

"This is the church(11) and the town hall(5). If you have a question about any locations let me know, and I'll see if I know what it is." As she rolls the map back up and hands it to the group she adds "I truly appreciate what you are doing and want to help in anyway I can."

Phen pulls out a lace-edged handkerchief, with an odd green stain in the corner, from his pocket and hands it to Coer. "Show this to my men on the Rakehell, and there will be no need for a battle."

Creel, sensing the others have given something, decides it is his turn. Pulling the splinter out of his lips, and feigning a fake smile, "now go forth and be true heroes and save our skins. Find out what happened to my ship, and on your way back if you have time perhaps, find out about any of these damn villagers."

Sam offers the idea of either the church or the town hall.

Magana dons her armor and gets ready. She sticks close by to Spire to make sure his thin body does not get tossed around.

Kane thinks about questioning Magana but thinks it would be unwise to anger a minotaur. He ponders lessons in life he learned.

Aexana, still in wold form, howls in the direction of the church. Outside she tries to get the scent of the innkeeper again, but between the pelting rain and the beating winds she doesn't pick up a clean trail. The ground is so covered in mud and ever growing puddles, that any foot prints have washed away.

Zeoll comes up with a way to communicate with Wolf-Aexana, and also likes the idea of the church. He asks about a building on the way.

Terser agrees about the church and the town hall, and wants to swing past the townhall on the way to the church.

Coer steps outside in the downpour and it can't even dampen his joke " Its not too bad once your out here."

Spire is the opposite of Coer, shivering in the rain and win. He yells about the gods being kind to them and they should go to the church first.

Jozhur is ready to go once a decision is made.

Terza looks at the map to where Zeoll pointed. " That is the Alderman's house I believe. Kind of like the mayor of the town. Might be a good place to check since he is in charge."

Captain Creel steps forward and gives a laugh at the group. " Looking like a pack of wet dogs there I see. I believe the young woman and man paid you to check on their boats, and mine as well."

Some of you standing in the rain, others standing by Tezra, a decision is to be made. To the Church, the town hall, the alderman's house, the docks, or anywhere else in town.

Terser (Warren G) [22/13/19 -- CMD 23 -- HP 60/60 (raging 84/84)]
Wednesday February 19th, 2014 11:13:33 AM

Terser sets off towards the church by way of the Town Hall. If anyone else is amenable, he will do a cursory search there before going to the church with the rest of the crew.

"The safety of the townsfolk is my priority," Spire calls out. "We can earn our gold when we know where they are. Checking the ships will not take very long, and I do not believe they are going anywhere." And if they are, we have much a much larger problem on our hands.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP33)
Wednesday February 19th, 2014 2:02:14 PM

Church by way of Town Hall, Zeoll agrees.

He does not cast his Mage Armor -- YET! but he is ready to do so at the first sign of trouble.

Sam follows along with Terser. He lights the way with his dancing lights.

Spire learns from the wise Zeoll, getting his Mage Armor ready at the first sign of trouble.

Magana (Craig) [AC19] [HP 71 of 71]
Wednesday February 19th, 2014 4:19:01 PM

Magana parries Captain Creel's snotty remarks with a disdainful tone. "They asked us to ensure their safety and find out what is happening about town. *You* are the one worried about ships, so go back inside and worry. Silently."

As Cpt Creel keeps making stupid remarks Aex-Wolf bares her teeth and growls deep...

Then she only howls once making it clear she's agreeing to go to the Church while passing by Townhall. But before they go she licks Zeoll's hand once while emmitting some more growling noises... and suddenly Zeoll understands perfectly what Aex-Wolf says (casting speak with Animals on Zeoll)

To Zeoll: "let's go quickly before either Magana wacks or I bite a chunk out of Creel... "

The Wolf, soaking wet, trots through the mod occasionally benefitting from the Taur's larger sizes to get our of the wind a bit...

When near the Townhall Aex sniffs the door while staying a little out of the wind. (Survival Scent 34)
If she smells something uncanny she howls lightly informing Zeoll of what she smells and will scratch the door with her paws... If it's more fish she smells Aex takes note not to eat fish for a few weeks.

Jozhur smiles at Captain Creel, "We will check on your ship, after we figure out what is going on. But just so you know, we're not all cut from the same cloth and as goody-good as you think. I'm awfully tempered to go cut your ship loose with that attitude."

Jozhur sets off after Terser, cursing the storm under his breath.

Kane' doesn't mind the storm, physical discomfort was never a strong worry of the half-elf. And since the others have sufficiently responded to the selfish captain, the BloodWitch doesn't see any problem with totally ignoring Captain Creel.

He moves with the others.

Captain Creel just smiles at Spire and Magana and their comments. Almost as if he expected a retort, When Aexana bears her teeth, his smile fades. He men stand up, but he puts his hands up to temper them. He is about to utter something when Jozhur shuts him up with the threat of untying his ship and letting it drift off.

The others get spells ready, and themselves ready as they plan to head to the church, while stopping by the town hall on the way.

Outside, the rain plummets down on everyone soaking clothes and boot. It will come from the side for a few seconds, before a wind change makes it start coming back from the top.

BOOM..... Thunder and lightning crackling at every step, as if a giant walks in the far off distance. Talking is no good, unless it is yelling over the noise. The smaller party members are even pushed off balance by the wind.

If the road is sloped any bit, free flowing mud and water pour down making it slippery. If the ground is level, deep puddles continue to grow as more and more rain drops into them.

The streets are entirely empty, not a soul. But you do notice some candle light shining behind the doors and windows of some of the homes

You pass the copse of trees that Zeoll slept in the night before, and you see the town hall in the distance. This large stone building, one of the tallest in Gullport, can only be the seat of government. All of its windows are dark.

Thursday February 20th, 2014 8:10:39 AM

Unimpressed with the darkened town hall, Sam feels that the church might give answers to this mystery. The bard uses his vocal strength to compete with the raging storm.

"It looks vacant! I think the church might give us answers!"

As always, Sam waits for the "leader-types" to speak and act. Sam, knowing his place in the group, follows along.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC18 - HP33)
Thursday February 20th, 2014 3:39:56 PM

Zeoll is old and creaky and not that strong, but he is big. He reaches out an arm to any of his friends who need an anchor in this storm. Sam?

It strikes him that it may be a clue that the weather is so fierce around here. Maybe some agency is at work.

He talks to Aex the Wolf and faithfully translates anything that she wants to say.

Although the candles may beckon, Zeoll is in favor of pressing on. That temple on the hill is a worthy place to search, he suggests.

Momentarily absorbed in the unusual weather, Coer trots off after his friends while trying not to sink into the mud. He offers his hand to the smaller of the group should they need it.

He tries to talk at the entrance of the town hall only for his voice to be snatched by the wind and enveloped by thunder. He points to the Temple up ahead and takes point, leaning into the wind.

Aex-Wolf can't smell anything at the Townhall entrance so she also trots into the direction of the Church. Her ears flat on her wolf head and taking cover from the wind next to the larger companions...

(Perception 20)

Magana moves with Spire toward the Temple, with an eye to the skies on the lookout for falling debris. Idly, she wonders how difficult it is going to be to hire a servant to brush the muck and tangles from her fur when this is over. This was a job for the younger generation back home, and the thought generates a stab of homesickness behind her stoic demeanor.

Sam (David W): 14/12/13 -- CMD 13 -- HP 42/42
Thursday February 20th, 2014 6:51:42 PM

Sam gladly accepts Zeoll's assistance as the group works their way through the storm. As his eyes strain to see the temple up ahead, he tries to recall any story of weather manipulation by a cult or other religious group. (Knowledge:religion =20)

Terser (Warren G) [22/13/19 -- CMD 23 -- HP 60/60 (raging 84/84)]
Thursday February 20th, 2014 8:46:55 PM

Terser follows along towards the church when the town hall seems abandoned. He does, however, pause for a few moments to bang on the few doors that have lights burning inside to see if there is any response.

As the party approaches the temple, Zeoll asks Sam how well he knows his gods. "To what Powerr is this temple devoted, do you think?" The old liontaur tries to remember his now mostly forgotten divine lore.

Once the church comes into view, Untrained Know Religion to Aid Another (Sam): 14. That should be worth a +2.

Jozhur trudges along with the group, eager to enter the temple and get out of the storm.
