Token of the High Seas

The league adventurer's enjoy their time in Fort Beast, and although a few of you would like to spend more time exploring the island your sense of duty keeps you from asking. You would fit in well here. Barratore feels at ease and he and Edson spend the day sparing with the minotaurs, taking advantage of the opportunity to learn the tactics of those so large and with such great reach while the others spend the day taur watching. Only Gerox, finding some difficulty with the large stairs, has any difficulty exploring the town.

As the warriors spar physically Gerox tries to draw the new captain out into conversation, which she engages in openly.

"Captain, So what is the role you see the WLA filling in Rum during your tenure? Are we just going to be mercenaries for hire or do you seeing us trying to shape Rum's politics and policies towards the future? Do we want to keep pursuing the Beastlords or leave that to the Fixers and the government?"

Her response comes without hesitation. The League exists to combat evil, in all its deadly forms, and to protect the innocent. Of course there are as many ways to apply that ethos in practice as there are members. I imagine we will be called upon to help protect the city from time to time, and if that is your desire we could certainly make you a local protection group, but form Artus has told me I expect your role to be something more. You can have any role you wish in shaping the politics of Rum, but the WLA will take no official stance except where it effects the organization directly or when we have reason to expect truly evil influences at play. As far as leaving things to the Fixers, the recent attack leaves me hesitant to leave anything to them. It is not that I blame them... ... ... I just trust the WLA more at this time.

After the new Captain answers Gerox questions Harvest asks if there is a library where she could learn more about the minotaur people, and while there is, Harvest learns that it is all written in tauric. As she tries to decipher the writings she meets an odd minotaur who offers to tell her the story of the taurs, but he warns her not to repeat it in front of Minotaur, Centaur or Liontaur for it brings about feelings of shame and racial hatred.

Domi created the Taur race long ago, a noble race that combined the best of the liontaurs, the centaurs, and the minotaurs. The original taurs spoke the Ancestral Taur language, These taurs were the youngest of the noble races. But they fell into ignobility, and they were sundered into centaur and minotaur and liontaur. The tale of that sundering is lost to myth and conjecture, but at least the three races all knew they were children of Domi.

The taur races lived together on the mainland, but over 400 years ago a small number of them set off, believing prophesies that the gods were going to destroy much of the northern continent. A small group of refugees made it to the Taur Isles, where they made island homes. Adapting from a hunter lifestyle to a seafaring existence. many liontaurs became merchants, trading among the taur communities on the islands. These liontaurs were responsible for instigating the great Taur Civil War, which pitted centaur against minotaur, while the liontaur merchants profited from both. The role of the liontaurs in starting the war was long a secret, but in recent years word has trickled out. At the end of that war, the taur races were sundered further, each segregated on its own island. Some say the liontaurs were punished most for their betrayal of their kin, exiled to the smallest of the Taur Isles, and plagued by hell hounds.

A short time before the Godwar and the Year of Ascension, an island appeared in the waters between Minotaur Isle and Centaur Isle, where land had never been before. Strange stories were told about this new place -- called Bridge Isle by most. These rumors said that Bridge Isle was a place that welcomed centaurs, minotaurs, and liontaurs -- a place where ancient enemies lived in peace. It was said a group called the Chosen of Domi were tasked by the god himself with reuniting the ancient races...but not even they could overcome the hates of the past and in anger the god cast the land bridge to isle back into the sea.

That night you eat your fill from a banquet large enough to feed an army with generation minotaur sized portions and fine wine. The air is filled with the stories and glory of past battles. After awhile the taurs grow silent, wanting to hear your tale, as if wishing to determine if you are worthy of their Captain. (ooc: Feel free to tell your tales or particularly heroic individual acts before heading out.)

Dawn seems to come too early the next day and many find they drank more than they intended due to the oversized cups. You find the Captain on the deck of the SeaSprite and overhear her talking with Artus under a sky streaked with pink and crimson, Please, call me Ceri for now. I have resigned my post here and do not officially take the title of Captain again until we reach the outpost in Rum. Turning to you Artus says, Very well. Leave the navigating to me, and I will leave the task of keeping Ceri safe to you, not that I expect any problems. I few minutes later the anchor is raised and the ropes cast off, and once again you feel the familiar sensation of the wind in your hair and the salt in your lungs.

ooc: Please list any travel plans / preparation you might have.

" ... not even they could overcome the hates of the past and in anger the god cast the land bridge to isle back into the sea."

This was the story told to me by the nameless minotaur when we visited Fort Beast in the tauric isles. I feel this is not a story spoken often, even among the Tauric peoples themselves. Why they chose to tell this to me, I do not know. But I feel that there is much honor in this for me. If you read this now, I urge you not to tell this story lightly, for it remains a point of shame for the Tauric peoples. Please respect their pride.
Harvest Moon had copied the story of the lone minotaur into her journal as best she could from memory, adding her own commentary after. It was a gift beyond price that had been given to her, and she did her best to do honor to it. She would return to Rum, and one day her journal would take its place within her library. The story would then be there for someone to find.

"THEY COME!" cried Harvest Moon that evening, as she told the story of the Batwing-Heads -the Vargouille that had attacked from the green island where they had -lost and separated from the fleet- thought to find food and water. She brandished her polearm as she had done on the deck before. She recounted the battle from the first sighting of the Batwing-Heads to the rescue of seaman Hmanas, who had fallen into the water after being paralyzed by a Batwing-head, by Peza who had risked her own life to dive into the water and pull him toward the SeaSprite. Then she told of the sad death of Hmanas, who began the terrible transformation into a Batwing-Head himself until Crag Hammerfist slew him mercifully with a crossbow bolt.

Dawn comes soon after this previous day of stories. As usual, it finds Harvest Moon awake well before the rays of the sun crest the distant edge of the Wold. She climbs the rigging to the crowsnest, perching high above, ever vigilant. The League Adventurers would not be caught out this time by such as the Batwing-Heads.

He ponders the Captains words and decides that he just can't call her Ceri but doesn't want to insult her either. He stammers, "ah Captain, sir I mean Ceri, What are you plans for us when we get back? Do you have a mission in mind?"

Barratore was good at fighting, he enjoyed the excitement, the challenge and the adrenaline rush of adventuring into the unknown. He liked gathering with others, friends and strangers alike to cheer, toast and carry on with the crowds. What he did not like was leading or being the center of attention. He also knew though, that he could not simply sit there like a centaur. Barratore would tell the story of attack from the spider creatures that poured from the ground beneath the city of Rum. Of how they took several of the citizens and stole them away into underground tunnels. Barratore and the others of the WLA, went into the tight dark tunnels to rescue the people and put an end to the threat. Barratore takes care to tell how his horns scraped the dirt of the ceiling and that his shoulders nearly touched the walls. How the group divided up because they had to take greater personal risk to find the innocents as quickly as possible. Finally he and Brom caught the main group of foes and stormed into a room full of defenders and slew all of them

Morning comes upon the League Adventurers all too early and you find yourselves still groggy from a night of stories and high praise. The minotaur's had bought several rounds of large drinks as the stories carried on into the night, and you can still feel the spirit of acceptance you felt as they deemed you worthy of their beloved Captain and slapped you mightily on the back. In the distance a golden sun begins to crest over the horizon and climb into the sky as Artus sails the SeaSprite towards Safety Channel by Shipwreck Shoals.

On deck Harvest Moon skillfully scales the rigging to the crow's nest while Gerox awkwardly addresses "Captain" Ceri. He is just about to ask the towering taur her plans for the group when the half-elf's keen eyes spot something bobbing among the waves in the distance...a large swan shaped boat. She can't see down to the bottom of the craft at this distance (about 1,000 feet), but it appears as if the ship has been abandoned, with no signs of crew or cargo.

(You will pull even to it in about 8 rounds)

"Hoy, hoy!" cries Harvest Moon from the high crowsnest. She jumps down into the rigging, and grasping a ratline, leans way out, pointing in the direction of the swanboat.

"Hoy, hoy! It is a lone boat. I see no one aboard."

From up above, she peers closer to see if there might not be a detail that might be plucked from the boat, something that might indicate why such a thing is out upon the ocean as it is. And not to neglect the surroundings, the keen-eyed half-elfish girl also scans the surrounding waters for danger or possible ambush. They had no reason to expect such. But she would be remise should she fail to take such a possibility into account.

"Hoy, hoy!" comes Harvest Moon's call from the high above in the crow's nest, both as warning to those aboard the SeaSprite and greeting to those on the mystery vessel. Instantly the scene is that of life and death. All around the ship below her, the League Adventurer's spring to action. Brom quickly goes below to get his sword and bow as others rush to the deck and draw their weapons. In the distance the ship continues to move silently among the waves, as quiet as death. Perhaps they could not hear the call over the wind and crashing waves. Perhaps they lay hidden, lying in shadows on the floor of the boat. Or perhaps there is truly something more ominous about the boats presence.

As the ship moves closer the half-elf's unbelievably sharp eyes notice dark spots on the side wall of the ship. Like an irregular pitting of the wood as though something pierced the side. Towards the upper edge, by the railing, are several small clusters of 2-3 holes. As Peza suggests board the ship you realize the marks look very much like the wall was pierced by a grappling hook.

ooc: Since Brom had to run below deck to get his sword and bow, I am going to say two rounds passed. "Attacked!" cries Harvest Moon. "That boat has been attacked!" The signs are clear. And yet, the attackers are nowhere about. The two most likely possibilities are that the attackers have come and gone, leaving this swan boat floating empty upon the sea.

Or ... the attackers came from below and may now be there still, hidden beneath the waves. The half-elfish girl dismisses the possibility that the many attackers may all have such magics as to render them invisible. It is not an impossible thing, and yet it is too fantastical to lend such an idea credence at this time.

"Below!" she cries. "Watch from below! There are no other boats about. If there is danger it will come from the swan boat or from below the sea!"

Harvest Moon growls as someone appears so suddenly nearby. This, in and of itself, is astounding. But there is something that was said by the man who spoke that is even more interesting. It is even more interesting than the one who managed to come so high up into the crowsnest with her without notice. Without a sound. Without any weight or pull in the rigging.

The interesting thing is that the man said that the swanboat was theirs.

One possibility fits the facts. The eyes of Harvest Moon narrow with the suspicion that grows within her head. It will take but a single touch to verify. Before she does so, however, Harvest Moon calls out a warning, so strong is her suspicion that she does so even before using the power given to her by Domi to know of these owners of the lost swanboat.

"Beware," cries Harvest Moon, "I am thinking these are spirits of the dead!"

Then, Harvest Moon reaches out to touch the one who had so successfully snuck up beside her.

What do you want? barks the raven haired girl...
There is a moment of silence until the the man in front of her whispers, his response just barely audible. To watch you die. It is not the words that that cause you fear, but his complete lack of emotion at makes your blood run cold. High above the deck Harvest reaches out towards her assailant, using her powers as a Lorekeeper to gleam more information on their enemy. Drawing her hand back in surprise she realizes that they dark figure before her is not some hideous undead fiend, but a flesh and blood man flowing with holy power (cleric).

Edson doesn't need to wait for any command and turns to fire his bow at he nearest enemy, his arrow burying deep beneath man's black cloak, but doing no real damage. The man glares at Edson, the hatred evident in his eyes until a flash of metal draws his attention back to Brom. With lightning speed the warrior had drawn his sword and before the would be assassin could react Brom's blade was cutting deep into his side. Zalmay watches as the warrior takes on two enemies and unleashes his family's ancestral power, laying down a sheet of ice at their feet. The dark robed men in front of Borm are slowed, but neither loses their footing.

At the back of the ship Ceri draws her tow bastard swords and turns to face her attackers. With crippling speed her right hand shoots forward thrusting the six foot blade deep into the mans shoulder as she positions her second sword defensively in front of her ready to perry any attacks. Behind her Barratore too draws his sword and swings it at the other enemy pinned between the two of them. An instant later the deck is covered crimson. Then, before the enemies can react, Gerox sends a brilliant ball of energy into the fray.

Enemy's Turn

The black clad assassins on the ice carefully move towards Brom. The first man steps off the ice to face Brom head on. His thin blade cuts through the air, but the raging barbarian brushes it easily aside. The second man then steps forward carefully on the ice, his agile feet moving easily across the slick surface. Another blade flashes in the light, this one piercing Brom's side. (10 dmg)

Up in the crows next Peza watches as the man moves to attack Harvest Moon. Immediately she loses and arrow and it sails through the air. Although the shot flies true, neither Peza nor the attacker manage to draw draw blood.

Towards the back of the ship the black assailants lash out at Ceri. With a flick of her wrist the bastard sword easily knocks the blades to the side. The skill with which she wields the large weapon in her off hand makes it clear how she earned the title of Captain in the WLA.

Barratore fights in silence as he normally does, measuring his opponents with every strike. A game of inches. Life and death in melee came down to just a few inches. Others hurled themselves into frays, Brom was one such person and some talked and tried to exchange words as well as weapons. Barratore enjoyed the adrenaline of battle, the rush and excitement of physical conflict and of pitting himself against monster or tutored foe, but always to him it was a discipline. Strike, counter-strike. Feint and parry. Misdirection and always trying to look to the next opening and seeing to the strike beyond what is presented.

"This one is a healer," calls Harvest Moon to her fellow League Adventurer. "They are men!" By now, they already know that her guess was incorrect. How these men got aboard is no longer important. That can be discovered later. Now, is the time to stop them. They are raiders and they must be taken or slain.

If the one facing her is a healer, then it is her duty to keep him from performing his duties to his fellows. Why such a one would climb aloft defies the understandings of Harvest Moon in much the way the silent boarding of these men do. But, in the same manner, it is a question for later. For now, Harvest Moon reaches out to seize the holy man, grappling him to keep him from healing his fellows in the way that Hert of Gargul did for the League Adventurers.

DM James Correct me if I am wrong, but I assume you are referring to where I wrote "his arrow burying deep beneath man's black cloak, but doing no real damage". If so, that would simply be because Edson did not beat the AC. With a 24 I didn't feel right saying he missed his target, so I was trying to imply it didn't beat the enemies AC. OoC: Re: " ... Correct me if I am wrong, but ... "

Yes, that was exactly the question. (Well, part of it.) Thanks for the answer. I've found, in DM'ing, that the higher the group gets in level, the more I've had to abandon descriptive flourishes in combat and opt instead for describing things in terms of literal game mechanics. First and foremost, that alleviates ambiguity. Second, it's much easier on the DM's brain. Especially here where we can have up to eight players.

But, in truth, that was not the only thrust of the Knowledge checks. I was wondering whether this ostensible raiding party had any sort of renown in the area. Are they particularly well known and feared, etc. Thus the inclusion of the Knowledge History check. And, come to think of it, Geography might be helpful as well.

Barratore fights in silence, measuring his opponents with every strike. It is a game of inches, and a game the enemy is winning. Despite flanking the enemy, he is unable to break through the enemies and finds a a gap in his opponent's armor.

Brom smiles as he sees that these are just men. "My blade wants your blood." He says in a low, deep voice. Yet his blade goes wanting.

Peza quickly reloads another bolt and lines up the figure in front of Harvest. The shot flies true, but at that distance is not enough to pierce the enemies armor (missed by 1 point). "Be careful Harvest." she calls out as she tries to find a weakness.

Zalmay turns his attention to the nearest pirate and raises his hand again, discharging twin bolts of electricity that scorch the flesh of his foe.

Harvest Moon reaches out to seize the holy man, grappling him to keep him from healing his fellows in the way that Hert of Gargul did for the League Adventurers. The man squirms wildly, but Harvest Moon some how manages to keep a grip on the cleric. As she grabs hold of the man she tries to recall anything she can about similar attacks in the area, but to no avail. What she does know is that the men are determined to kill the league adventurer's and the identical outfits are designed to hinder identification. Her knowledge of all arcana tells her the ship they sailed was a called forth from a magical feather token and could only last a day, and if any such previous attacks had occurred in the area there were no survivors left to tell the tale.

Facing two opponents, Ceri's Bastard swords flash with blinding speed and cut through her attackers defenses with a critical blow.

Harvest Moon weaves her fingers together. "Shu. Rin. Do. Xi." As she completes the last word of the spell a translucent shield springs up before her. Etched upon the shield in silvery light is the fist of Domi. The shield glows for but a moment before fading to invisibility.

"They are followers of Gargul!" calls Harvest Moon. She had heard of the Grims who could walk the Planes of Shadow. Perhaps this is how they came upon the League Adventurers without warning. And yet, this attack is unlike the Grims of which she'd heard.

Who are these men?

"YOU! WHY DO YOU ATTACK US!" cries the half-elfish girl as she jumps down off the platform of the crowsnest. Abandoning concerns for safety, Harvest Moon descends in bounding leaps that sway the ropes of the rigging. "ARE YOU PIRATES? WE ARE NOT EASY PREY!"

Barratore retracts his blade and sweeps it down across his midsection of his attacker as Zalmay, seeing three enemies suddenly clustered close together, lays down another ice slick under their feet sending the attackers sprawling. As they fall to the ground Ceri swings both her bastard swords with deadly accuracy, landing another critical hit, and takes the head clean off #4s shoulders.

On the other side of the ship shadows envelope Brom and his opponents become more difficult to see. The barbarian is undeterred and continues his attack against his attackers, his attacks failing to hit their mark. Edson steps forward and swings his magical blade at the one closest. His attack misses, but he hopes it is enough of a distraction to disrupt the mans attacks on Brom.

Gerox decides to change tactics and casts a haste spell on the group. He gets everyone but Brom (and maybe Harvest depending on how high she is). Harvest Moon weaves her fingers together. "Shu. Rin. Do. Xi." and casts a magical shield around herself and warns that the attackers are Clerics of Gargul and begins yelling at them.

Harvest Moon struggles to learn more about the attackers as she climbs down, but is unable to identify the gender of her attackers beneath their hooded cloaks. However each attackers appear to carry a similar Holy Symbol somewhere on their person. The icon is foreign to her, but remembering what she was told of the History of Gargul she suspects it to be an occult offshoot tying back to the days of the 4th Cataclysm.

Eyeing who to help next Peza spots Brom and the way he looks about for his foe... "illuminate " she shouts and another greenish hue shimmers around Broms foe ....

enemies turn
-------------------

As Edson steps forward to help Brom the hooded figure turns on him (AoO) and sticks his blade deep into the Rogue's side. It feels as if his insides are on fire. Edson Take 6 dmg and Roll a DC 14 Fort SaveHighlight to display spoiler: {You can tell the blade was poisoned. If you made the fort save you suffer no ill effects. If you fail take 1 con dmg and roll again for this turn. If you fail a second time let me know and I will let you know the result.}

The battle seems to be turning in favor of the League adventurer's as Harvest Moon calls out warning and Ceri sends her attacker to meet his god, but as if on cue the remaining robed figures all lay a hand on their holy symbols. The ship is flooded with healing energy and the enemies wounds begin to knit themselves back together. The only positive side is that Barratore and Edson too finds their wounds now healed.

OoC: Whoa! AC49? Is that a typo? It also looks like you've got 4 and 5 switched. You list 4 as dead, but on the map it's 5 that's turned sideways.

Also, a question. Is the Opponent in A15 flying? Air Walking? In the water? The answer to this may affect what Harvest Moon does next.

DM James It is a typo. I have fixed it. #4 is dead, I will remove him from the map next round. The "enemy" at A15 was supposed to be a key to explain the green box meant Farie Fire was on an opponent.

She had offered them challenge and received no reply. There came no explanations. There were no offers to parlay. These Gargulites are no better than pirates who misuse the powers of a god.

Arriving back on the deck, Harvest Moon turns then to the Gargulite Pirates. "You have such powers," she says. "That you squander them on petty raiding says many things about your unworthiness and low character."

On the other side of the ship #5 suddenly grabs #3's hand and they disappear, only to reappear next to Peza. Blood drips from the cleric's face as the two men stand. He had managed to avoid Barratore's AoO as the two relocated, but in doing so allowed Ceri to get another critical strike on him with her razor sharp sword. Brom, unaffected by his opponents blinding spell, the warrior steps forward and returns the attack with flashing steel, but he unable to make contact with his opponents. With Brom stepping out of the way, Edson swaps his sword for his bow and lets loose an arrow, but he knows the second it leaves his fingers that the shot will fly wide.

"Captain Ceri," whispers Harvest Moon "her eyes. They are now white like milk. I think that she is blinded."

Stay away from me, or I will take your head off. Cire calls as she swings her swords wildly with such force it would certainly have taken a mans head off, but in her blinded state the effect is lost as she attacks the empty square where the man had been seconds before.

Peza quickly snaps off a bolt at the one shimmering in green hue, the point blanks shot crackling with energy. Brom tells Edson to help the others as he again attacks his opponent only to find the assassin's dragon-like armor as impenetrable as his own.

Peza, side steps the dark pirate and fires twice at the pirate, the second one piercing through his armor.
No I don't want to dance ... maybe you should just jump ... maybe try Barratore ... he likes to dance ... especially with his sword ... so pick up your little blade and give it a whirl " the raven haired girl taunts.

Barratore starts to draw an arrow, but then stops knowing he was a fair shot at best and firing into the melee would endanger his friends. Instead, Barratore stoops down to pick his sword back up. "Gerox, Zalmay, get out of my way!"

Harvest Moon's attempts to stop the Gargulite Pirate as it begins its spell, but lacks the mastery needed to take him down. Her inefficiency clear, she calls upon Domi's blessing, and touching the gnarled wooden root in the shape of Domi's fist calls upon The Brawler to bless the League Adventurers.
Cast Bless, +1 To Hit for everyone except Barratore.

Zalmay sees an opening in his targets and sends a wider spray of electricity towards the two closest enemies. He is dismayed that the damage is so small, but he finds he and Gerox are the only two that consistently beat the dark clerics defenses.

Each of the black clad clerics line up with one of the League Adventurer's. The first man's sword just barely misses cutting into Harvest's side, but Brom is not so lucky. As the blade pierces his armor he feels the sting of metal. It hurts, but he is relieved to see that the poison that stung Edson is no longer on the blade in sufficient quantities to harm him. Brom takes 7 dmg. The sword only had one dose of poison on it, which was already used.

On the other side of the ship the clerics step forward, blades flashing. Cleric #3 slashes at Zalmay's arm and fire shoots through his veins.

One small part of the mind of Harvest Moon contemplates this oddity. These Gargulite Pirates appear very confident, despite being outnumbered two to one. It is also plain that they do not have the overwhelming advantage now that surprise is no longer on their side. Their armor is strong, but their arms are not strong enough to defeat the League Adventurers. That is clear.

"Surrender," demands Harvest Moon. "You are outnumbered. One of you is dead. You cannot win. Surrender and we will grant you your lives."

Then she steps to the rail next to Edson Kazil and, with her mistletoe, calls a blessing from the Wold.

As his friend drops #2 finds himself skewered by Broms blade as Harvest Moon calls out one last offer for the dark attackers to surrender followed by Peza's encouragement...

I think the ladies may have a point. We never should have taken this job. The black clad figure #1 shouts and the others nod in agreement. If what she believes to be true is indeed the case, then they are still nearby. Near, but very far, separated by the veil between planes.

"You are known!" shouts Harvest Moon. "Return at your peril!"

"That is high magic, Barratore Steelwind," replies Harvest Moon, a growl still ticking at the back of her throat. "Hert of Gargul could. Not I."

The polearm spins in her hands, turning once, end over end before returning to her back. "But ... maybe ... "

Once again, Harvest Moon pounces. This time she leaps upon the body of the fallen raider cleric. "If these Gargulite Pirates can blind others, perhaps they also hold the means by which sight may be restored."

She speaks, even as she goes about a search of the fallen pirates things, stripping him completely as methodically as she would dress the carcass of a deer or boar. All aboard the ship turn to look at Harvest Moon as she growl like a small cat, and pounces on the spot at which the transporting Gargulite Pirate had just been. Eyes open wide as she appears to catch the scent of something unseen, stamping her foot and swinging the polearm in a wide and menacing arc, but is anyone is still there they are separated by the veil between planes. "You are known!" she shouts. "Return at your peril!"

As Harvest calms down Barratore moves to a rope to try to catch the swan boat, so that it can be secured and searched. He throws the rope out and is just able to rope the ship around the swan's neck as it passes. Turning back he calls out "Harvest, can you do anything for the captain?" ..."That is high magic, Barratore Steelwind," replies Harvest Moon, a growl still ticking at the back of her throat. "Hert of Gargul could. Not I."

Dismayed that there is no longer a cleric of sufficient level to remove blindness and dispel the magic that has taken away her sight, Barratore turns his mind to what the clerics had said. Job? What might that have been? All of them or just the captain. Since taking out the new captain made little sense to Barratore so he mentally decides it was an attempt on them all. A cowardly attack without honor. "When we get to Rum, we need to pay the temple of Gargul a visit. I very much would like to know what they know of assassins within their church capable of such feats as this attack." He then sets about examining the swan boat. The holes are appear intentionally placed, and wet spots on the floor mark where people had been laying wait at the bottom of the ship. Each damp spot on the woden floor lined perfectly up with one of the punctures of the side giving anyone inside a perfect view while keeping those inside hidden from sight while the holes further up on the side were put there to make it look as if the boat had been attacked.

Gerox slowly climbs down from his vantage point in the rigging. He hops lightly to the deck and moves over to his new minotaur Captain and asks, "Ceri, they clerics have fled. We drove them off. I am sure the magic they cast at you is temporary but why don't you sit and rest for a moment." As he says this the deck several heads turn to face him, Ceri shows no signs of her vision returning.

He reaches out and grabs her hand, forcing the golden haired minotaur to bend over as she follows, her horns dangerously close to the back of his head, as he leads her to a box where she can sit. "That was strange. Do you think they were targeting the Captain? They sounded like mercenaries at the end. Someone search the body of the one they left. Maybe we can find a clue on who they are."

As Ceri is led away from the ship railing Harvest suddenly spins the polearm in her hands, turning once, end over end before returning to her back. "... maybe ... " Once again, Harvest Moon pounces, causing everyone to step back for fear of her drawing her blade again in her zeal. This time she leaps upon the body of the fallen raider cleric. "If these Gargulite Pirates can blind others, perhaps they also hold the means by which sight may be restored." She speaks, even as she goes about a search of the fallen pirates things, stripping him completely as methodically as she would dress the carcass of a deer or boar. In addition to his bloody breast plate and poisoned blade she finds a silver Holy Symbol and a sheet of parchment baring a picture with Ceri's likeness.

Turning to the sightless Captain she says, "League Commander Ceri, we have enemies. They are known to us. Of them, I can think only of the rebel merchants of Rum who might hire assassins to come against us. Or, possibly, associates of the Pirate King. We do not know your foes, however. Can you think of any who might have hired these Gargulite Assassins to attack you? Any who might know that you are now far from a place of strength?"

Brom looks disappointedly towards the others as their opponents retreat from battle. He could bare lay a glove on them, their defenses about as strong as his own. It was less than satisfying to say the least, but there was honor is being able to fight two at once and hold his ground. "Everyone still alive?" He calls out as he looks to take a mental head count of the ship.

Edson follows Harvest Moon's lead and keeps the bow string taught, waiting for another attack. The air is still thick with magic and the deck slick with ice, but when none presents itself he unstrings the arrow and relaxes. " Well that was the most fun since we have had since killing the vampire. For a second I thought we were goners."

Zalmay nods, a dull ache in his injured arm, but the throbbing headache that comes with using too much magic, too fast, feels even worse..."I'm OK. Mostly..." The smell of burnt flesh still pungent in the air as he searches around the body and the spots where the other assassins vanished, looking for signs of this "high magic", but he finds none. Only the auras coming from the group remain.

Artus Ceri calls, get us back to Rum. She then turns the the League Adventurers. I have no idea who those men were or why they attacked, but I do have questions that need answering. Do you know if there is someone familiar with the religions of Gargul in Rum that we can speak to? A mentor of Harvest or Hert's perhaps? Also, are one of you able to restore my sight? Barratore harrumphs at Edson's declaration that the group might have been defeated and questions Harvest Moon, the only resident with knowledge of divine magic in the group in the cleric in Rum might be able to restore Ceri's sight. Yes. She agrees. We have strong clerics in Rum. She turns to address the Captain, Even so, I am sure now, more than before, that it is you that the Gargulite Assassins came for, League Commander Ceri. And even if you do not know them, they know your likeness. As she shows the picture to the others she tries unsuccessfully to figure out who might be behind the attacks.

As the League Adventurer's break it to Ceri there is nothing they can do to restore her sight she looks taken aback. I would have thought with all the spells flying about someone would be able to cast dispel magic or remove blindness. I guess will have to wait until we get back to Rum. With a sigh she asks Gerox if he can get her a large mug of something strong to drink. I knew you were well known, but I never expected an attack like this.

The muscled Barbarian nod in agreement and concedes, "Yeah...that's the problem. We are kinda of minorly famous in Rum. He asks, "Did they teleport onto the ship? How easy is it to teleport onto a moving ship? Harvest did you see anything else out there when you were in the crows nest. I don't think I will sleep well tonight knowing they could just show up again and slit my throat!"

DM James

After Peza shows the others the picture of Ceric Barratore rubs his chin and wonders if the others could have had pictures of the rest of you. As he ponders the possibility he begins the task of pitching the body of the assassin unceremoniously over he railing and into the sea. As he lifts the corpse up he hears Peza calling to Artus b]"Back to Rum as quick as we can ... the WLA has resources to help with restoring Captain Ceri's sight ... hopefully some infomation on these dark pirates ... Maybe we could find a cleric back in Rum that has some magics that possibly speak with the dead ... bring him the corpse of that dead Dark pirate .... at least its worth a chance" As she calls out the orders Barratore stops what he is doing...(does Barratore still toss the body over?)

Artus grabs the wheel and steers the ship back towards Rum, Brom thinks to himself about Ceri's condition and and envisions what would happen to him on the battlefield if he were ever victim of such a spell, the imagined scene convinces him that he will have to buy a potion, just in case.

Ever suspicious Harvest Moon find Ceri's lack of reaction curious and ponders the taurs every facial twitch, wondering what hidden meaning it might have. She feels their new Captain speaks of the League Adventurers as though it were they who drew the attack. Replaying the conversation in her head she decides the taurs motives are obvious. Her reply was meant in response to Brom's comment "Yeah...that's the problem. We are kinda of minorly famous in Rum. We've had good adventures that made us known in the town. So, when we were to leave Rum, it's not hard for people to know when and where to." She also decides that her lack of reaction to the revelation of the drawing was due to their leader being preoccupied with her sudden loss of sight and a tendency among the taur culture to not want to appear weak or emotional. She shrugs and gathers the wounded about her as she calls upon the healing grace of Domi to bathe them and remove their hurts. Several of the crew watch in amazement as the adventurer's wounds knit together as if a magic hand was sewing them up. They might have seen such magic before, but the ability is so far beyond them that they stare in amazement with their mouths hanging open.

Edson takes advantage of the free time and ,akes sure his weapons are cleaned off and salvages any arrows he can save before checking on Ceri even though there is nothing he can do for her sight. As he examines her eyes Gerox scramble past the mesmerized crew to get the new Captain a mug of ale, the large tankard awkward in his small hands. He puts it in her hand and steps back watching the clean up. Looking to the others he asks, "Did they teleport onto the ship? How easy is it to teleport onto a moving ship? Harvest did you see anything else out there when you were in the crows nest. I don't think I will sleep well tonight knowing they could just show up again and slit my throat!"
Spellcraft / Knowledge Arcana 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Because ships are constantly in motion, the caster of spells of the teleportation subschool must have line of sight to teleport onto a ship. Otherwise, a caster must scry upon a particular ship first, then immediately teleport to the scryed destination. Any delay in casting means the ship has moved from its scryed location and the spell fails.}

The next several days pass without incidence, despite the fears of many, and Ceri quickly adapts to life without sight and is soon able able to walk across the deck normally despite the rolling waves. As you move about the ship you hear the crew talking incessantly about why the ship was attacked, who was behind it, and if they would return. It is with great relief that you hear Harvest Moon call out Land Ho! and the shores of Rum come into view. Within a coupe hours Artus is docking the ship.

Peza was the group commander though, and so the fighter refrains from dumping the corpse and drops it on the deck. Barratore takes his place up at the bow.

Upon arrival, he is quick to disembark and put his hooves on solid land and stretch. Barratore places the captain's hand upon his shoulder and leads her to the WLA compound. "There are ways to cause bodies to better keep, Barratore Steelwind," says Harvest Moon. "I will work to that end," she adds.

A curious question comes to Harvest Moon, and she goes to the halfling Navigator Artus Morindim to explore the idea. "The swan boat cannot live for more than one day," she explains. "So the Gargulite Assassins likely came from some place within a day's journey from their ambush. Possibly from Rum itself, if we were near to it." She pours over maps with the halfling to determine what bodies of land might have been likely places from which the Gargulite Assassins had come.

It is not long after that Harvest Moon spots the island and calls out to those below. At least, it does not seem a long time. Peza is very clever. And she is wise. The first duty of the League Adventurers is to League Commander Ceri. As convenient as it might be to go directly to a temple, especially as the have the body to which to speak, it would be safer to go first to the compound of the Woldian League of Adventurers so as to surround themselves with fighters. Then, after that, send for a cleric. Harvest Moon leads the way, her eyes open, prepared for an attack.

Barratore finds himself glancing repeatedly down at the cargo as it is off loaded and you disembark from the SeaSprite. He had been worried about the idea of transporting a decaying corpse on the ship, but Harest Moon's with her quick thinking and ingenuity had the body placed in a barrel of strong rum, the alcohol keeping it perfectly preserved. Despite having to keep an eye on the barrel, and one or two crew members almost tapping the wrong one when not paying attention, you managed to get it back without incident.

It is fortunate that Barratore is so focused on the cargo, as he ends up missing Edson's comment "If we were at sea any longer I was expecting Barry to start growing scales" By the time he looks up Zalmay he pondering if he will be able to spend more than a day in Rum before leaving once again.

Children waive and the citizens cheer as you walk down the street towards the WLA. Several peope in the crowd can be seen whispering about the Captain's condition. Although some appear concerned or disappointed by Ceri's lack of sight the gestures and antics of the kids are that of role playing some some great battle and they appear more excited to hear the story than they are worried about her sight.

Glad to be back in Rum, Peza sends for a Cleric of Gargul that can help to restore Ceri. Although there are few with "high magic", she finds that both remove blindness and speak with dead are relatively simple spells that someone less skilled than those among the League Adventurer's can cast (Sepll lvl 3).
Within a half hour a young priestess introducing herself/ Harper, Eye of Gargul, at your service mam. After a short prayer the milky white in the Captain's eyes begins to recede and in a matter of seconds her sight is fully restored. As to your other request, what questions would you like me to ask. I am skilled enough to ask him three questions. Just keep in mind that he is still within Gargul's domain. I won't be animating him or bringing him back to life. Nothing that seeks to usurp or circumvent the role of the Lord of Life and Death. She also adds that there will be no charge, this time, as thanks for all the group did to help when the city was under attack.

Brom watches the activities as he sits down at the table with some mutton and mead while Harvest Moon meets with Navigator Artus Morindim to explore there their attackers might have departed from. "The swan boat cannot live for more than one day," she explains. "So the Gargulite Assassins likely came from some place within a day's journey from their ambush. Possibly from Rum itself, if we were near to it." After pouring over the maps and thinking through various tactics and strategies she determines that the gargulites were likely waiting on Minotaur island and left by magic shortly after the League Adventurers.

Speaking with the dead, forcibly, did not seem like a good plan. The dead had ways to object. At least the one taking the risk was a follower of Gargul.

Barratore moves to stand within his own reach and so out of that of the corpse and Gargul priestess. He draws his sword and stands with his feet apart just past shoulder width. Harvest Moon (AC22/Touch21/FF18; CMD 26; HP HP 57/57) - Al

It is a relief to find League Commander Ceri cured of her blindness. It will be interesting to see what she does first now that she is at her new post and restored to the fullness of her faculties. Harvest Moon imposes her own priorities by bringing out the drawing.

"This is the drawing of your likeness that we found upon the person of the Gargulite Assassin," she says, presenting the parchment to the minotaur commander. "Do you recognize the hand? Do you know when this picture might have been drawn? We think that the Gargulite Assassins might have followed us from Minotaur Island," adds Harvest Moon. "This, I should have known before. Why else would the Gargulite Assassins have needed a picture, save to distinguish one minotaur among many? As you saw, they were not Minotaurs themselves."

And there is also the holy symbol of the Dark Brethren to investigate. Harvest Moon draws the one used by the dead Gargulite Assassin and shows it to the cleric of Gargul. "Do you recognize this?" she asks of Harper, the Eye of Gargul. "We believe that this man used this symbol to beg power from Gargul for the purpose of assassination. I suspect this man to belong to an occult offshoot of your faith tying back to the days of the 4th Cataclysm. Beyond that, I know little of these people. If you have more insight into this group, we would listen with appreciation."

To all of these things Harvest Moon turns her attention well before addressing the question of what to inquire of the dead Gargulite Assassin. To this she says, "If we doubt that the Gargulite Assassins knew who they were hired by, then ask instead, how they were to be paid and when. With this knowledge, we can be there at the time of payment, and catch them all."

Its hard to go about your normal lives knowing that an assassination attempt could come at anytime. These assassins had assistance. They were not normal flunkies with a cudgel and knife. They were motivated, and had powerful magics behind them. I still wonder how they got on the boat? We might want to ask our dead friend here that? It might give us a clue on how they are organized and how powerful our foe is."

Gerox turns to the cleric and asks, "While I use magic, I can't speak with the dead. Are there any limitations on what we can ask? Can the dead assassin lie to us?"

DM James

The group begins to split as Harper talks. Many feel ill at ease at the thought of a bloated corpse speaking from beyond the grave and prefer to get their news second hand. Those that stay listen with interest as the Eye of Gargul speaks with her a thick accent. I would not think you need to be worrying about the spirit lying to you. Too easy to get caught, though he may not answer at all if his will is strong. Noticing Barratore reaching for his sword she adds, There be no need to worry about using your sword. I don't intend to animate someone who would kill me as soon as look at me. I'm not daft you know. He will only be able to speak, and that by my magic. He needs a mouth, true enough, but it won't even be his body producing the sound, it comes from the grey of the Shadow Realm. I assure you all, it's quite safe. Besides, judging by how the fight went, I wouldn't expect him to be resistin much. Probably wants whoever sent him after ya to pay, if you get my meanin.

Harper waits for the questions to be nawrowed down to three as Harvest Moon shows Ceri the drawing. "Do you recognize the hand? The Captain shakes her head. No. I have never seen it before, and anyone who has visited Minotaur Island since I became Captain of the WLA could have drawn it. The golden minotaur continues puzzling over the drawing as Harvest moves on to ask about the HOly Symbol.

Oh, I have heard tell of such symbols Miss. Harper interrupts. It is not something talked about openly, so I must beg you to keep this information to yourselves. It is known that before the Year of Ascension Gargul was seen as a god of evil...and basically he was...but you see, as he traveled the Wold, he came to a more nuanced view. He saw himself as the god of both death and life, seeking to inspire respect as well as fear, or instead of fear, in us mortals. After the Year of Ascension they say Gargul made his peace with all the Gods of the Wold and the Gods of Testing. Now this is the part we don't like to speak of. Some of Gargul's followers hated this change. They reveled in death and evil, and formed many a cult. That Holy Symbol you have there is a corruption of Gargul's Eye. That symbol you see there in the center is of Marteaus, the god of testing. When Gargul had his change of heart, some who embraced evil switched to follow Marteaus. Others combined their love of evil with Marteaus' delivery of suffering to justify their own dark works and evil deeds. These groups evolved into may dark things, including bands of assassins.

I imagine this is what you met. And the short one has a point. If they didn't succeed in killing the captain, they likely didn't get fully paid. There is no way of knowing if they will try again, but such bands are usually quite small. See, it's hard for them to recruit members without drawing our attention, so they can't do such things openly.

"I am Harvest Moon," says Harvest Moon upon the realization that she had not named herself to Harper, Eye of Gargul. "As to the payment of the Gargulite Assassins, those who hired them would have to know that League Commander Ceri was not slain. We met no one on our return from Minotaur Island. There was only open sea. To find out that League Commander Ceri still lives, those who hired the Gargulite Assassins must necessarily be in Rum, have agents in Rum, have magical means of perceiving League Commander Ceri or be told by the Gargulite Assassins themselves. And, if the Gargulite Assassins have no knowledge of their employers - through cutouts as Zalmay Tufan says - then the only way in which the Gargulite Assassins can inform their employers of their failure would be through the meeting for payment."

"But, perhaps it may be best to ask the more direct question." The eyes of Harvest Moon turn to Peza. She is the leader. Moreover, she is clever, and the friend of Harvest Moon. Her questions are likely best.

The attention of Harvest Moon turns back to the ways of the Gargulite Assassins. "If these bands of Gargulite Assassins must find new members through such secrecy, they must also receive their jobs through equal secrecy. 'We never should have taken this job,' is what the one Gargulite Assassin said." Harvest Moon mulls the thought. She follows the facts as she would the spoor of an animal through the woods. "The Gargulite Assassins were given a drawing of League Commander Ceri. This must have been produced by someone who saw her on Minotaur Island. We also believe that the Gargulite Assassins were on Minotaur Island before following us to sea. The Gargulite Assassins were not Minotaurs themselves. So they must have gone to Minotaur Island, seeking League Commander Ceri, from somewhere else. Also, for those to know that the Gargulite Assassins failed, there must be some presence or representative in Rum."

With that thought, the small half-elfish girl begins cataloging all she has managed to learn about the seamier side of Rum. The darker aspects. The world in which one might go about hiring an assassin.

Harper listens and Edson crinkles his nose while Peza,Zalmay and Barratore come up with several possible questions to ask. Who hired you ??" Have you set up a base of operations in Rum ? Describe each member of your group ? Who do you report to? Why do you want us dead? What was going to be the next step after you killed us? As the ideas are shared Harvest Moon suggests they go with the most direct questions, which would be Peza's. Not wanting to jump the gun, Harper checks with the rest of the League Adventurers to see which questions they would like asked. It'll be takin me 10 minutes to work my magic, but I'd rather know you know what you'll be asking before I start. There'll be no second chances with this.

Peza thanks the Eye of Gargul and gives her a generous gift, knowing such kind deeds often go far towards building relationships and connections within the community.

Brom and Harvest Moon spend the next few minutes as pondering what else they might be able to learn from the attack. Is there someone in Rum checking to see if the assassins we successful, or might they verify this through scrying or other magical means? Will there be another attack? And how much exactly are the lives of the adventurer's worth? And where one might go about hiring an assassin. Harvest moon puts her sharp mind to the task of answering the last question, but she she is fairly certain such things would have to be done outside of Rum. It is very unlikely an assassin's group could have sprung up in Rum so quickly without the WLA having heard about it.

Ten minutes. Harvest Moon leaves Harper, Eye of Gargul to the task of drawing speech from the dead Gargulite Assassin. Instead, rather, she turns to League Commander Ceri.

"I do not know of your plans, Ceri," begins Harvest Moon, "but have you thought of remaining under protection until such time as we have found those who hired the Gargulite Assassins and have dealt with them? It is a thing, I think, that will likely hinder your leadership in these first days in Rum. But it would be better than falling to an assassin's poison blade."

"Perhaps ... " The thought that passes through the head of Harvest Moon is writ clear upon her face. "Perhaps there might be a way to draw another attack." Her eyes go from League Commander Ceri to Barratore Steelwind and back. "A way in which you would not be put at risk." Truthfully, though minotaurs do differ through size and marking, it is not as simple a thing for one who is not a minotaur to distinguish between them as one might expect. With some application of dye and a few changes in clothing and equipment ...

"Perhaps there might be such a way," muses Harvest Moon.

Barratore stands stoically in his position to strike if the dead man starts walking instead of talking. He glances over at Harvest, as she addresses the Captain a change in his look, puzzlement perhaps, crosses onto his face. Barratore looks from the Captain, to Harvest and then to Zalmay and back to the captain. He catches on perhaps a bit slowly, but the fighter does indeed catch on. A snort of air blasts from his snout.

"I have no problem in being bait, but i look nothing like the captain." he shakes his head in disbelief that such a plan could fool anyone. "Her snout narrows earlier, like all females, her horns shift to the side instead of forward, even her shoulders and waist round differently. It would be like, like. Well I can't think of anything, but surely no one would be fooled."

As Harper prepares the bloated corpse for her spell Harvest Moon tries to think of a broker who might know how to contact assassins outside of Rum. Despite her wide variety of contacts in the city she can think of no one who would have such information in or close to Rum. Although there is a small amount of crime in the poorer ares of the city, most of it is being taken care of by local protection groups. (Not sure about courts, I need to work that out with Donna, but for now assume the protection groups handle any issues.)

The entire concept of prepping bloated liquor engorged corpses is beyond Edson, and when asked about it he just puts his hand up. "Not my department. Asking the dead questions isn't something I'm comfortable with." However, Gerox listens nodding to the suggestions and supports Peza's questions. "I think they are sensible. We can debate questions for hours. We are just looking for a starting point to investigate."

While everyone discusses what questions might be best to ask Harvest Moon leaves Harper, Eye of Gargul, to the task of drawing speech from the dead Gargulite Assassin. Instead, rather, she turns to League Commander Ceri and speaks to her about her protection and catching the attackers. Instantly the minotaur's eyes come to life and burn with a fierce fire of determination. I am CAPTAIN of the WLA in Rum. I know you mean well, but I WILL NOT live my life in fear in my own city. If you want to try to catch the culprits, then you have my blessing, but I will not hide like a common cur with my tail between my legs or dishonor my people by being babysat like a helpless calf.

When the topic turns to the idea of setting a trap Zalmay nods, "That would work... assuming there are no Minotaurs in this gang or among their backers..." He feels it is a safe bet, considering all of the assassins the faced had been human.

Well I can't think of anything, but surely no one would be fooled."

Come now. The magic is ready. Harper says and Peza nods. Taking her cue Peza asks the first question "Who hired you ??" The stiff bloated corpse remains still as its cold onyx eyes stare into the depths of oblivion. The mouth remain agape and motionless and silent. ...We never know our clients...shadowy forms in the darkness...voices without faces...protection for both parties... The voice is awful, which no hapless hearer will ever be able to forget. Garbled and rasping like the sound of a drowning man.

Harvest Moon puts a hand up to hide her smile. The answers and responses had been as she had anticipated. Even the gargling, alcohol-choked reply of the dead Gargulite Assassin had answered as she had thought he would. It is somehow the way of the world. Things seem ... created this way by design. So much so that one can usually predict such things with fair ease. In the end, the League Adventurers could only wait for the next thing to happen. Always react.

"If you will not remain safe, Ceri, then can you tell us your plans for the next three days? We may be able to turn such a knowing of your plans into a trap for further assassins. Or, at the least, be on hand to aide you should another attack come."

The rasping voice responds to Gerox question, withuout drawing breath or moving its mouth the words garble worth. We live separate lives spread across New Ellena and only meet when summoned by the leader of our order. Only he knows everyone's identities, and it is he who tells us where to meeeeeeet. Thee voice seems to trail off in a wet wheeze and then goes silent.

In the other room Ceri considers Harvest Moon's question. As we talked about before, Theringer should have records and papers here that need going over. Hopefully I will be able to glean some insight into what happened her and why from them. I also need to meet with the Fixers and officials of Rum to introduce myself and maybe ask a few question. I imagine I will safe enough within the city, and no one gets the drop on me twice. This time I will be ready for them. She gives a brief, cold smile that never reaches her eyes.

Barratore inhales slowly into his diaphragm and let's his shoulders relaxas the captain partially lays into Harvest verbally. The new captain did not seem too upset, truly, more of a show to the others. Barratore was ready to intervene in case he was reading her wrong though. As the situation passes , Barratore chuckles a bit and shakes his head. It was odd and funny that he was ready to jump a fellow Minotaur and one with an authority position over him.

The captain was not going to go for any decoy plan, at least one that involved her staying low. One thing she did have wrong, the city was not safe enough. Many fixers and Theringer himself had all just been killed in this safe enough city. Her call though and certainly it was not his place or desire to question her on it.

Barratore turns his attention back to the corpse. The answers were not providing much to go on

After watching the interactions minotaurs on Minotaur Island and how Edson and Barratore interacted, it was not surprising how the captain reacted. He lets things happen, it reminds him a little of his disagreements with Theringer. The barbarian suspects that this new captain and he will have similar disagreements.

Brom listens again from a good distance to the answers from the corpse. "Find out how much the bounty is on the Captain's head. The bigger the bounty, the more determined they'll be ta collect."

As the group discusses what question to ask next the corpse begins to speak, responding to one of the questions it overheard. As it speaks its voice begins to fade as the spell wears off and its soul tires. The contract ... to stop the minotaur ... reaching Rum ... When hired ... need to know ... strength ... enemy ... underestimated ... THEIR MISTAKE ... can't trust ... contract over. Harper's jaw drops at the anger in the voice as it practically yells 'their mistake', as if the pride of the dead demanded those witnessing knowledge he was not to blame for the attacks failure.

Ceri's head nods a little as she thinks. I am not sure what I will find in Artus' notes, but if there is anything relevant I will share it with you and the rest of the League Adventurer's. Same goes for meeting with the officials. I cannot introduce you to people I do not yet know, but can see if they will allow you into the meetings, and if not I will tell you what I learned after each meeting, though I imagine they will be quite dull.

Harvest Moon (AC22/Touch21/FF18; CMD 26; HP HP 57/57) - Al
Tuesday March 4th, 2014 9:09:43 AM

In a moment of quiet, Harvest Moon contemplates the words of the dead Gargulite Assassin. As is often the case, what is not said is more interesting that what is actually spoken. In this case, it is reasonable to assume that the Gargulite Assassins did no scouting of their prey to begin with. Instead, they relied upon information given to them by those who hired them. This implies either great initial trust of the ones who hired them. Or great incompetence on the part of the Gargulite Assassins. Possibly both.

But that says more about the assassins than about those who hired them. And, it appears, these particular assassins are no more of concern.

That the contract was to stop League Commander Ceri from reaching Rum speaks to her position in Rum and less to she herself. So it is unlikely that those who hired the Gargulite Assassins were angered with League Commander Ceri herself. Rather, they are against something in the connection between League Commander Ceri and the city of Rum. The most likely connection would be the Woldian League of Adventurers itself. So the Woldian League of Adventurers in Rum may have an enemy.

If this enemy exists, what is their nature? They are wealthy. To hire such secret Gargulite Assassins cannot be cheap. They know ways to hire peoples so secret that the Eyes of Gargul do not lightly speak of them. And yet they seem clumsy. They spend great energies to stop an unproven commander from coming to Rum. As great a fighter as League Commander Ceri might be, thought Harvest Moon, she has done little to impress anyone as a leader. And these enemies have, aside from this, done little else to disrupt the daily life of the Woldian League of Adventurers here at the compound. It would have been a simple thing to have burned the compound while she and the League Adventurers were gone. Most especially with the powers shown by the Gargulite Assassins. These enemies, they seem as though they act from a far distance away. But, in that case, how did they come to be enemies?

Harvest Moon looks about herself for the halfling Navigator Artus Morindim. Upon spying him, she asks, "Why was it that you sent us to pick up League Commander Ceri? Were there any strange incidents while we were gone?"

I hope you got what you were looking for. Harper says, still looking at the corpse. Not much more I can do, an I reckon he'll be stinkin to high heaven soon enough. I recommend burial at see. It's custom, but more than he deserves. Is there anything else you be wanting before I take my leave? The young Eye of Gargul waits for a response before heading home,

Taking the lead, Peza suggests the group make their plans for the morning and get some rest. Harvest shows interest in following Ceri on her meetings throughout Rum, appearing much more enthusiastic about the mundane task which the Captain seems view more as a chore than something to look forward to. There is a brief discussion on the implications of both what was said and what might be learned through the corpse's omission before Edson suggests he check out the Riff raff at the docks to see if he can learn anything more concrete. Gerox then asks if Ceri has any orders for the group, but she shakes her head. Not at this time. You have done well, but until I have read Theringer's notes and met with the Fixers I do not have much to go on. You are free to do what you want for the time being.

The rest of the night passes without incident as the group makes their plans for the following day. Harvest Moon makes spends some time talking with Artus about why he sent the League Adventurer's to pick up Ceri and asking if there had been any further problems in Rum since the groups departure. I never really though about it, to be honest. A commander in the WLA, including those with the rank of Captain, are considered to carry a certain prestige and are considered equal to those of minor nobility. Between that and the recent attacks it seemed the right thing to do. As for the city itself, things have been fairly quiet since you left. Lot of rebuilding and an increase in the number of hired protection roaming the streets, but nothing of real importance.

That night you all sleep well and the weariness of your trip seems to melt away. The sun is already rising in the sky when you wake up to the smell of fresh baked bread and percolating coffee. Ceri is already at the table reading some of Theringer's notes.

ooc: Please let me know your plans for the morning, who plans to go to the docks, follow Ceri, what ever else you have in mind, and make any associated rolls.

Edson awakes early in the morning to get ready. If Ceri's meetings were as boring as the dead body inquisition, he would gouge his own eyes out. Luckily he was going to head to the docks, and try to learn some knowledge from some living people. The docks would be easy for him, it was his class of people who he would be dealing with. He was one of them, growing up in his city's version of the docks, before joining the guild.

Barratore nods to the priestess of Gargul. It sat good with him that she thought burial at sea was more than the retch deserved. Indeed, assassins and the like should simply be disposed of, not buried at all. Their lives were without honor and their deaths should be as well. Barratore takes his leave and spends a few hours practicing with blade, bow and horn before retiring

In the morning, Barratore dons his armor and arms himself with blade and bow and makes his way to breakfast. The WLA sash prominently hangs across his chest. "I am going to patrol the city and see what I can see. It was important to the late captain that we be seen in Rum and I think that is still true. I'll be at the tavern for lunch to check in."

The fighter leaves after breakfast to simply walk and be seen on the streets of Rum. He heads into the merchant and market district first to spend the morning there. At lunch he heads to the tavern (whose name eludes him currently)

It is a chance to know better both the city of Rum and the workings of the Woldian League of Adventurers. These are things that they -she and her friends- have had little time to do since arriving from the long ocean voyage. It is, in fact, surprising how little they know of the city and the organization for which they have risked their lives many times.

Harvest Moon enters, having already wakened two to three hours ago. She fetches a mug of the coffee, wrapping her fingers about the vessel to capture the warmth. Then she seats herself near League Commander Ceri and begins going through the documents that the League Commander has already read.
