Hunting Season

Decrepit Old Churches (DM Ezra)
Wednesday February 19th, 2014 5:52:00 PM

The Fist makes quite the showing as they march out of the village of Cheerful Stay. Once the procession has passed the last house, the villagers return to their homes without fanfare.

By mid-morning the sun has risen overhead and warmed the earth, sending visible trails of steam from the vegetation lining the road, well more of a trail really. A squall of clouds crosses the sky, the rain falling under the front is easily visible. As is the path of the rain.

It doesn't take much for the icy rain to turn the road to mud. And with the warmed vegetation, the ground is soon covered in a blanket of fog that swirls around. Carver's extra height keeps his head above the low lying fog. Here and there he can see the fog swirling with the passage of his teammates.

Overhead Bliss finds the downpour uncomfortable as Mookie fights to maintain their flight. Below he can just see dark shapes of his companions passing in the fog, only Carver's head plainly visible.

The trudging is wet, muddy, and quiet.

Perception and survival checks please.

The cleric takes his standard watch, whichever is given to him, then preps his spells. He eats and drinks, copious amounts knowing that the trip is going to be hard and that they wouldn't be stopping. Linden always hated training in the forced marches, but now he's glad they were frequent.

He takes up a position near the middle of the party (or whereever the sergents tell him to be), keeping pace and only going ahead of the party if ordered to. He is keenly aware that the terrain and inhabitants are unusual. (Perc 14, Surv 9) The centaur is wary of every small sound in the trees, but it mostly turns out to be the heavier drops building and falling onto a hollow stump or a wet raccoon shaking off the wet. The mud and rain makes it hard to spot anything of import.

My apologies, I didn't realize that Linden was also a centaur, and thus he would have also been able to see over the fog. Hmm, the survival DC to avoid getting lost is 15, without fog...

Everyone is at full health from Linden's channels the previous night.

Carver realizes that 5 or 6 feet, the usual height of a fog from temperature variences between wet rain and warm ground, the smaller members of the party (the two halflings and a dwarf) would be easily swallowed by the fog, while the humans would only just have their heads visible.

Between Prudence and Carver, the two of them are able to keep the others grouped, even as they frequently start to veer off. The only two to make the survival check

As Bliss came down, he saw the same sight as Carver and Linden, a canted steeple in the distance.

This picture should give the right idea. fog enshrouded church

Those beating a perception check of 20, and able to see over the fog, note a figure standing on the roof, partially shrouded by the steeple.

The fog is burning off with the passing of the rain, and will soon dissipate. It is mid afternoon.

Cameron, being pretty sneaky is willing to try and sneak in, but if the rest want to shoot the lookout down he is willing and able to do that too.

The rest of the Fist prepares for a possible encounter.

The tiny halfling on the large raven must get within 30; for deathwatch to positively identify the individual as undead or mortal.

As Bliss and Mookie draw closer, they see and hear the now recognizable human thump his foot against the steeple thump.

He raises a crossbow and brings it up, Declare yourself!.

From around the back side of the church Bliss sees two disturbances and the fleeting signs of a pair of heads walking. At the shout from the man on the roof, they stop. One jumps up to get his head above the fog and looks up at the human. He doesn't see Bliss.

In response to the crossbowman's harsh words, a high-pitched female voice is heard: "So I must say, that some grouchy puss woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!"

"You said it, Mom!" declares Bliss, who has squeezed his Vauhwyt action figure. "Mister man, you're not my commanding officer! I don't have to take orders from you!"

Mookie can fly but only 40 (average). No hovering! He'll circle around the tower until it looks like a fight is going to start. Which looks like it is doing right now! He'll land and set Bliss down.

Mookie caws, "Kid, this is looking like a situation, and I'm putting you down! I'm retired!"

"Okay! Okay!" says Bliss. "All this circling is making me dizzy anyway! Mister, I'll do it your way! Let me just stop flying around and around and I'll tell you all about it."

Mookie perches on the windowsill and Bliss hops off.

Maybe that means the fellow will take a shot at Bliss if he had a readied attack! If so, his AC (with the mage armor, thank goodness) is 21.

Fortunately, the fellow does not have a melee weapon, so he cannot make attacks of opportunity (unless he has the Improved Unarmed Strike feat). So Bliss does not provoke an AoO, even as he enters the crossbowman's very same square (Bliss is tiny so he can do that.)

Not wanting to attack exactly, Bliss casts his witch cantrip, Lesser Confusion. Since he is not armed, the rude crossbowman cannot take an AoO to spoil his spell. Bliss's ley line check is a 22, so it works fine. The save DC is 12.

Those that are not flying or a centaur need to add a survival roll or be talking loud enough to each other to not get lost in the fog. Note that you do have issues with visibility. Unless you climb on a centaur...

Cameron sneaks off, not realizing the shout is hte dancing lights Prudence cast, which he can't see anyway. How is Cameron maintaining his sense of direction as he sneaks off? Without knowing how far ahead you wanted to get, I didn't make any guesses (Johny will sneak ahead 30') is much better for me to know what you are planing. Since stealthy movement is at 1/2 speed, you wouldn't have gotten far. Please note a location.

William easily crouches into the fog. He tries to move with the others, but can only see anyone within 5' of himself, and they are quickly dispersing.

Tinker quickly moves forward hoping his team can continue to see him, hear him, or more likely, as a dwarf, smell him. How are you maintaining direction?

Nikolai cautions against splitting up, as the Fist splits up. He manages to keep on the dwarf's heels, and doesn't lose sight of him.

Mookie and Bliss drop down and land. If Mookie is perching on a windowsill of the church, how would this be entering the square of the guy standing on the roof? I had not noted windowsills previously, but have now done so. There are several. To which are you headed? I don't see a note of special dispensation for Bliss I thought single level class dips were not allowed.

Carver suggests the others follow the road, such advice ignored, as he moves himself off to the side and forward. You are large, not huge? Should be just noting two cells.

Prudence runs forward, following the road and mentally keeping the dancing lights even with herself. Prudence, it's a free action (no concentration required).

Knowing I needed a survival roll before moved would have prompted me to roll one when I moved. When I first moved there was no map and the non stealthy folks held back for a round, I was hoping for at least that 10' of separation. The second move I neglected to note a location, my bad.

Tinker is not a woodsdwarf, and so keeps moving forward as long as he can see the road only five feet away in the fog to his right. He thinks; "If I keep the road that was leading to the church in sight, we'll be able to get to the church without losing our way."

At least the others are giving plenty of distraction to the ones at the church, Tinker thinks with grim humor. Flitting through the fog like a shadow, the dwarf is thankful of his skills and his cleanliness to remain unseen, unheard, and unsmelled.

Sorry, hit wrong button, please wait.

Linden tries to remain vigilant in the fog as the other members of the Fist disappear before him. Fortunately he can see over most of the fog and can see the church and the lookout on top of it.

Cameron had been creeping forward, slowly, along the old path. He was hidden in the fog from his companions and those ahead.

Tinker and Nikolai continue to sneak slowly along the old road as well. Tinker realized that he lost sight of the road (having stepped 15' from it) but was able to reclaim sight of it.

As neither posted a position, but both indicated stealth movement, I have placed them 10' forward and slightly east, with Nikolai now within 5' of the road.

Carver manages to not walk over anyone as he trots forward, unconcerned about attempts to hide.

Prudence nearly got lost in a garderobe, fortunately she bumped into Nikolai and resumed her trek along the path. :)

Bliss, unaware of his threatening actions, lands nearly on top of the startled look out. His attempts at a diplomatic resolution swirling into the garderobe.

From below, one of the two that had come from the side of the church yells up What's the ruckus Rufford? Whoa! Look at the size of that bird! Catch it! I haven't had meat in days!

His companion nudges him Quiet, your stomach will get you killed. Rufford said there were more out in the fog. Placing a hand on his companion's shoulder, he steps up on somethign hidden in the fog. Frack! Two more, centaurs! Jumping down the unmistakable sound of drawn steel is heard as the two of them back towards the corner of the church.

Bliss hears several pairs of feet from inside the church.

Rufford takes a step back from Bliss and points the crossbow directly at him, enough of your games! Who are you?

As a tiny creature, Bliss is unable to threaten other squares without entering them.

The front door of the church slams open and another human, decked in full plate armor stands in the doorway, What in tarnation is going on out here?

Linden hurries forward towards the front of the church. He is tall enough to see over the fog.

William keeps pace with Linden, and with the larger creature next to him, easily navigates the fog.

With diplomacy failing, Bliss tries for humor. Rufford, takes another step back, an inquisitive look as he listens to the tiny halfling. Responding to the bellow from below, I don't know! It looks like a puppet, cocky bastard. He was riding a magicked raven. And he's got friends coming at us!

Tinker continues to push forward. The outlines of a large building are coming into view. The fog in front of him is clearing.

Cameron also pushes forward, switching from ranged to sword'n'board.

Carver shifts to the side and bellows instructions to Prudence, effectively centering attention on himself. Carver sees that the fog is clearing off in front of him. He can see the upper half of two individuals near the corner of the church. One wielding a stout quarterstaff, the other a rapier, there are several indistinct shapes in the fog before him, low to the ground, several dozen, lined up in rows between Carver and the church.

Prudence attempts some trickery with the dancing lights. Since she can't see them, she can only hope she was effective.

Nikolai heard Carver shouting, and keeps pace with Tinker. He also can see that the fog is burning off in front of him.

My sword! Reaching back into the church, the man at the door soon pulls forth a large greatsword and rests it on one shoulder. A fight be ye wanting? Well then, bring it on. We'll not start it, but by the gods, we'll finish it!

While Rufford on the roof is clearly suffering a serious case of trigger finger and waiting for any move from Bliss, it is obvious that the others are maintaining a defensive posture.

" FIST, HOLD IN PLACE. EYES PEELED, REPORT HOSTILE ACTIONS."

Please accept my apologies for the late posting!

Hearing the challenge, Cameron calls out his peaceable intentions while rushing forward. His head just bursts from the fog at the end of his run. He can see that the fog is burning off and is nearly gone around the base of the church. To his left he can just glimpse the shadows of several objects in the fog arrayed in formation between the church and Carver. At the corner of the church furthest from him he can see the two men with drawn weapons, as well as the man in front of him sporting full plate and a greatsword. There is no reaction to his exclamation of "Fist." Cameron can tell that the men are seasoned, trained, and ready to engage in violence for their cause. As mentioned, they do not appear to be aggressive.

Whether his teammates can read his mind on his choice of vocabulary remains to be seen. Technically, this probably should have been a bluff check as you were less than fully honest in your intentions on coming here.

Carver manages to come across as a prancing pony with his threat of violence.

Linden and William continue forward, also breaking from the deeper fog. Linden's comments are received better than his companions. Flower? Prove yourself her servant! this shouted from one of the men standing at the corner of the church.

Meanwhile, Tinker and Nikolai crouch and attempt to hide in the remnants of the fog.

Bliss is only able to see the lookout in front of him, he can sense Rufford is rather uncomfortable with his close presence and is ready to fire at any wrong move by Bliss, fortunately, he does appear to be in a reactive state.

Prudence waits for further developments.

Hold your Fist? By a virgin's first kiss you better hold yer fist! Come in peace?! Bah! Who comes in silence hidden by fog to help? If you want to bring your fist to a sword fight then do so! Upon hearing of a reference to the god Flower. Serve Flower you claim? Then tell me, the twins born of Flower, were they proof that evil is born innate, or is evil learned?

"The fog is natural," Pru says. She pitches her voice to carry, but keeps her tone calm and reasonable. "It's not as though we created it on purpose. And we're not hiding. Here we are."

If possible, Pru would like to re-position her lanterns like this: one up next to Bliss on the roof, one over Carver's head, one over Linden and William, and one over her own position. She deliberately does not light up Tinker and Nikolai.

If that isn't possible, she brings all the lanterns to reveal her own position, since Bliss, Carver, Linden, and William have already revealed themselves.

[Diplomacy 24]

DM Ezra: Since Prudence can't see most of her companions, doesn't know where most of them are in relation to herself, and can't currently see her lanterns (but has a magical sense of direction and distance (yes, I'm giving you that)), she'd have a hard time doing much more than revealing them by moving them above the fog, or revealing herself or pointing out those she can see.

He reaches into his pocket to keep his sword hand from drawing his weapon and feels the necklace of fireballs they found the first night in there. He again takes the negotiations back over.
He steps forward another 20 feet to X22 while trying to reason with the armored person.
" Look, yesterday we killed every undead in town and now we are looking for their source. The townsfolk will vouch for us because we saved their friends and family and are genuinely trying to help them. The undead seem to be coming from this way, they mentioned a church. Churches would have graveyards, supplying the raw material for undead like we fought and so we came out here. The church is abandoned according to those that live here so there shouldn't be any objection to us taking a look around. If you DO have an objection and WANT to live in a run down and decayed church in a countryside overrun with the walking dead I can only assume you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. Well I don't see a post for Linden, unfortunately... The comment of a fist at a knife fight would readily indicate that he has not heard of the fist.

While Linden ponders a response to the challenge presented, Cameron pushes forward with his own challenge.

Diplomacy of 15 misses by more than 5 on a base DC of 20+, dropping the attitude. intimidate was also a fail by 5 or more. Your lies are more believable.

A shadow of a figure darts across one of the windows, a voice hisses from inside the church Mailed Fist? They're mercenaries! Paid fighters!

A peaceful solution is becoming less likely. Though Prudence' revelation of herself does mitigate factors somewhat.

Mercenaries? These miscreants? Hoodlums in fancy potato sacks, more likely.

Enough fog has burned away to reveal there is indeed a cemetery between the Fist and the church. This would be difficult terrain for large creatures.

I'm assuming that was the DM post with the wrong header. I know I have done that when covering for folks.
We didn't get a new map since that is part of the header.
I'll make the diplo and other rolls below, but based on my last set they are probably not going to be needed.

IC
" So you are still intent on standing there and hurling taunts at us? Fine, the other Fist would have driven you into the ground by now, but we are a little different. I see only a few options left to us, I'll let you pick which one happens. "
"Option A is we both charge each other and we all fight it out and a bunch of you die so that we can look around the church for the source of the undead problem. Not really a great option for you."
"Option B, you tell us you are behind the undead attacks and are the ones we are looking for and we fulfill our contract. This probably also means we fight and most or all of you die. Again not a great option for you."
"Or option C is that you allow us to search around and determine that you have nothing to do with this and we all try to solve the problem together. By far the best option."
"Please keep in mind that we are trained, professional soldiers. Fighting for our contractor is our job and we mean to accomplish it. We are good at it and will have our look around. The only options left are how that goes down. So what do you say? How is this going to play out?"
" FIST, STAND READY!"

Cameron knows this isn't going well, he just hopes that if these guys are not the bad guys they came looking for, the idea of facing trained soldiers is enough to make them back down.

Fixed previous header. map has stayed the same and is in old headers.

When Cameron starts talking about who will be dying, the leader, or at least the one doing most of the talking, starts laughing. The two men at the corner look at each other and grimace, they'd have to make a challenge of it.
It's not their fault, they don't recognize their position.

Giving Carver a good appreciation, well that one might be worthy. Oh hey, they all have the same styles! What did Samsilk call them? Mailed Fist? Is that some sort of delivery service?

No idea, though that one isn't male, I'll happily show her my fist.

The one at the front of the church, that's mighty optimistic for a bunch of younglings. Faith pretenders and charlatans is what you appear. A look of loathing crosses his face at Linden's response. Any true follower of Flower would have known that she bore only one child, to the dragon Flame. The second child was born to King Claudia, in Flower's body. It was from the evil innate to those children that Flower set foot on the road to love. Any true follower would know that.

On the roof, Rufford, who is still ready to knock Bliss off the roof with a bolt, comments Oh god, now you've done it. You've gone and gotten the Justice talking about religion! Better do something quick, I'd rather not have to take you in.

IC: (See above questions)
Nikolai senses that things aren't going too well. For whatever reason, the leader of this group is being dodgy. They've mentioned fighting zombies several times and the leader has not even acknowledged that or commented on their own encounters with any undead, or lack thereof.

To Tinker he whispers, "They are being too dodgy about all this. They've not made any comment about seeing or fighting undead also. They are hidding something for sure."

He looks around, wondering how long the fog will last. "Tinker, this fog won't last forever. We need to find a better hidding place."

To recap, the fist was spotted on approach to the church. BLiss, flying ahead as scout, did poorly in his attempts at a diplomatic resolution when he landed right next to a lookout with an itchy trigger finger. Two additional men were patrolling around the church and observed some of the Fist approaching through the fog. Another individual emerged from the fog and requested intentions and identifications.

The Fist's additional attempts at diplomacy continued to fair poorly, as did their attempts to intimidate the guards about the church. One member of the Fist declared their peaceful intentions as a follower of the god Flower, but then failed to respond to a direct inquiry to prove knowledge of Flower's ascension.

One of the individuals was referred to with the title "justice" which a member of the fist recalled is used in reference to some members of the church of Pantheon.

Several comments have been made and ignored about killing undead, though there is no sign that the graves near the church have been disturbed. At least one person in the group has heard of the Fist, but their information is more urban legend than fact.

The Fist finds itself in something of a standoff with an unknown number of individuals, though at least four are visible, and at least one more heard. The group they are addressing has shown discipline, training, and seems unconcerned at the apparent imbalance in bodies on each side of the conversation.

Several members of the Fist are growing impatient and ready to engage in a more direct diplomatic approach.

With several members of the Fist talking, the one individual talking directly to the Fist is hard pressed to hear and respond to all. It is apparent that the others are deferring to him for guidance.

On both sides weapons are held ready, a physical confrontation seems inevitable.

Bliss says, "OW! You jerk! I told you I was just casting on myself!" He ducks down to get some cover (fall prone as free action).

He pauses to evaluate whether he got his spell off or not.

If he did not, then his next step is to cast his Reduce Person (ley check from last turn = OK)

If he did, then his next step is to take out his scroll of Cat's Grace and read it.

DM Ezra: You may roll for concentration (DC 19) to cast the reduce person. And an acrobatics roll (DC 7) to fall prone without rolling/sliding down the sloped roof.

Thanks for the clarification, Ezra!

Concentration check to cast a spell as taking 9 damage: 1d20+3 = 19! Made it! Woot!

Untrained Acrobatics check vs DC7 to stay on the roof after falling prone: 1d20+5 = 8 made it! Woot!

That was the round that triggered the readied attack, right? So NOW Bliss gets out his scroll of Cat's Grace and Reads it.

Does Bliss have cover up there, anyway?

If he wanted to climb down the INSIDE of the tower (into the building), what would the DC be?

==========

Resources Available/Used:

One first level witch spell unused.

Scroll of Mage Armor used
Scroll of Cat's Grace used

Current spell effects:

Mage Armor (scroll read by William on Feb. 20)
Reduce Person: used 1 of 10 rounds
Cat's Grace Duration: used 0 of 10 rounds

DM Ezra: Bliss has cover from those inside the church, and depending on which side of the peak of the roof he dropped prone on, he probably has cover from the two at the corner of the church, he would also have some cover from where the guy at the front of the church was. Climbing through the wrecked steeple, climb DC of 10. That gets you through the steeple, you will then be 20' from the ground. The underside of the roof is large beams. Jumping to the ground would be an acrobatics DC 15 to only take 1d6 damage instead of 2d6 for failing the check. Any damage sustained results in landing prone. Please note that when you change to tiny size you may use dex instead of str for your climb checks.

In the round after THAT, he intends to pull out his elixer of hiding and drink it.

And in the round after THAT, he intends to climb down sneaky like inside the steeple tower and see what's the what.

With Cameron only 35 feet away, Tinker easily hears some squeaky fellow tell Cameron that the people attacking the Fist are friends... and Cameron is believing them!

"A spell is on him, just another attack!", declares Tinker to the others. Still, what Cameron says makes sense, and Tinker is willing to try to give the church people one more chance to be reasonable. Carver's charge strikes true. The tip of the lance easily punches through the man's armor, into his chest, and ticks out several inches behind him. His weapon falls from his hand as he grabs onto the lance. His wordless cries are unheard from the massive internal damage. He looks at Carver with an expression why? as his knees buckle and he soundlessly drops to the ground and falls onto his back, his motionless eyes staring into the sky.

Bliss, prone on the roof of the church, casts a second spell on himself. He also considers his future actions.

William's eagle appears half way between William and Rufford on the roof (Short range spell, you are 80' from target, spell range is 30'. Eagle can fly 80' and can thus move and attack). Rufford sees the eagle and swings with a hand axe, neatly slicing the eagle in half (attack of opportunity hit AC 15 for 9).

Cameron tries to talk explain to the Fist that it is all a terrible mistake, the voice from inside urges him to do what he can to stop the fighting.

Linden pauses to ask Cameron about his friends in the church.

Tinker does indeed hear the talking between someone in the church and Cameron I think it would have required a spellcraft when the spell was cast to know this is magic. Tinker moves forward and finds a clear line of sight to the man at the corner of the church. H4 is invisible, that was his last known location.

There was no "surprise" round. Bliss casting a spell was enough to set off the itchy trigger finger. The weapon had been described as ready and pointed at Bliss. At the same time, Cameron crossed "the line in the sand." This is the recap for round 2, starting #3.

You kilt Grewb! Pantheon will have yer soul! screams H2 as he steps forward and attacks Carver. His rapier easily pierces through a chink in Carver's mail (6 piercing). While his other hand sweeps low at Carver's leg with a dagger, just missing Carver's hamstrings.

Rufford advances on Bliss, a pair of hand axes held out in his hands, best to keep yer hands still and mouth closed. You don't need another hole in yer hide.

Prudence feels something cold and sharp pressing against her neck, a voice whispers in her ear. Leave the lance on the ground, best place for it. I told you folk we'd end any trouble you started. From the corner of her eye, she sees nothing to either side of her.

Map is in the header, where it has been for the whole encounter.

I need a clarification.
The person that I don't know (yet because he is invisible) is holding a dagger to Pru's throat is not the one that charmed me, correct? This matters because I like the person that charmed me ONLY and will try to carry out their will so long as they or their allies don't threaten me. I might end up expanding that to not really liking folks that threaten my actual friends. It isn't a huge leap. In fact it is what the whisperer is almost asking me to do, stop the fighting. If the charmer isn't the person with the knife, I might be able to do something about it when they appear, without violating the spell. I might even get a new save, maybe with a bonus.
IC

Linden suggests defensive actions. (There is only one map, linked in my title, I update as I go, if I miss a move, let me know and I will fix it.)

And Nikolai charges into the fray, unfortunately his tackle falls short.

Prudence responds to the request for her to remain unarmed. (Yes, you managed to cast the mage armor spell, I had you as having picked up the spear.)

Bliss tries to reason with Rufford (H1). The steeple was originally a spire that extended 15' above the top of the church. About four feet above the peak of the roof, the steeple has partially collapsed and is leaning to one side (north). Bliss had landed on the exposed edge (south). When he "fell prone" he landed on the roof next to the steeple. Bliss will need to stand, climb up onto the steeple, then he can drop/climb down into the steeple. The interior of the steeple used to hold a bell, now missing, and is otherwise an empty shaft into the church. There are some jagged pieces of wood sticking into the shaft from the collapsing steeple.

Cameron continues to cajole the Fist about his long lost friends (the spell lasts for hours). The spellcaster was inside the church. The DC to hear a whisper is 15, with a +2 modifier for distance. By what justification would Cameron have for walking back to Prudence if he didn't hear the whisper?

Another ball of energy flies from within the church to slam into Carver's chest (3 pts).

Rufford's eyes flick between Bliss and his companions below, trying to see how they fare. Best you just lay there. Tell your friends to surrender, we don't want to hurt you, but we can't let you interfere with our mission. He continues to stand ready over Bliss.

As Cameron approaches Prudence, the voice whispers in her ear, Best be telling yer friend to back off. I really don't wish to shed blood all over such a fetching outfit. Prudence feels a hand circle her left wrist from behind her, the hold is loose, she could break free easily, though she still feels the kiss of cold steel on her throat.

With someone new coming at him, H2 shifts and tries to hit Nikolai, stabbing at him with his rapier (8 pts).

And Tinker isn't sure where to aim.

ooc: Tinker doesn't know there is a spell cast, but anything that makes Cameron talk completely opposite of what he was saying just a moment ago makes Tinker believe that Cameron has been taken by a spell.
..................

Tinker shakes his head and looks again, the man he thought was at the church door is not there, and the dwarf can't hear any sounds nearby to give him a clue over the shouting happening on the other end of the cemetery. As long as Tinker is holding his ground, no one can come at Prudence or Cameron (or so he thinks), and that leaves him free to cover either the guy on the roof somewhere near Bliss or the guy inside the church lobbing spells at Carver.

A quick assessment tells Tinker that it is highly unlikely that he'll be able to pin down the magician from where the rogue is at, but if he moves, he'll expose the light-headed Cameron and Prudence. "No good choices, and standing here picking my nose has never been an option for me, neither", he mumbles to himself as he takes aim at the guy on the roof.

"Back off from the Halfling, High Pockets!", he shouts while aiming his crossbow at H1. "You let him get down and I don't puncture your lung. Deal?"

Tinker again targets a foe but doesn't shoot, waiting on an aggressive move from the opponent before letting fly.

Unhappy about the mysterious disappearance of his eagle, William curses and looks around the battlefield... He stays crouched under cover and decides to let loose with an acid arrow... However, he decides something tricky and aims behind Prudence, trying to hit something that might be behind her...

2. If he doesn't see it hit, he'll shift targets and aim at H2 with his XBow - Hit AC 21 for 5

(Just wanted to note that this may change if Eddie is actually alive... Waiting on DM's response)

DM Ezra: What was odd? Just as Linden is not attacking and also dropped his weapon, nor is Cameron attacking, Bliss isn't attacking either and also dropped his weapon, what was 'odd' about Prudence dropping her weapon? You successfully targeted the square with Prudence's four globes of light in it. Roll miss chance 50%, and did you subtract 4 from your roll for firing into melee?

I also forgot the map was posted in the header. Apologies.

IC:
From his cover, he disregards casting Bless because he hadn't realized, probably due to fog, that his party had split. Fist's shouldn't do that, why did we? He keeps Bliss in view because he seems to be under assault. (He'll use a Sacrificial Bond if Bliss is hit.) He remains silent and unmoving. He retrieves the party scroll of detect evil and casts it (created at min CL). His first view is at the church then at the steeple.

It helps if you give me a distance moved. I don't like guessing intentions. How far is Linden backing up? Detect evil is a 60' range, from where Linden is currently, it is 75' to H1 and 70' to Bliss. Which also presents an issue for the 30' range of sacrificial bond.

Cameron's justification for returning to Prudence was she was the only one of his team mates that seemed to be complying with the stand down plan. If the two of them stood together, nonthreatening, and started to try and get the rest of the Fist to stop fighting they might have a chance to do so.
He asks Prudence who she is talking to because she doesn't normally go all girly girl with the Fist. Aside from her being female she is "one of the guys". She eats, sleeps, fights and when needed, bleeds, right alongside the rest of the Fist, never asking to be acknowledged as anything other than a member of the team. Her sudden shift in demeanor is as telling that something is up as Cameron's about face on shoot first and ask questions later was to Tinker.
Is that a good enough set of reasons to move toward her? I think so. If your decision is that it isn't he can just as easily walk 20' toward the church to get reacquainted with his old friend. Let me know which you feel is better and I'll post from there.

DM Ezra: Didn't say you couldn't just asked to verify it was in character and not meta. Thogh Pru isn't the only Fist member to lay down arms.

Dm Ezra - anything yet on my question re the eagle?

DM Ezra: Interesting, that post is missing. I originally had the eagle as tiny, which would require entering the same square to engage, and thus proc'ing an AoO. This morning (3/17) I went back and realized the eagle is small, not tiny. Therefore, going back and reviewing the incident, the eagle would have struck once (having moved it could not preform a full attack action) for 4 points of damage. The eagle would have then been hit as an attack by Rufford as his normal attack, instead of just threatening Bliss. The eagle is still dead. Please note that Rufford's generally passive actions regarding the Fist would be different, having taken damage.

Um Bliss was quite publicly damaged several days ago in the DM post. Its in his header and was taken as soon as it was dealt. Bliss shouted about it when it happened. Short of mailing you a candygram it couldn't have been more public. Sorry to put it this way Jay, but read the board man.

Cameron stops in his tracks and looks closer at Pru.
Perception 11 (ye gads I hate this roller )
She is in an awkward position, more so that she normally was with her gear in the field. Cameron didn't normally pay too much attention to Pru because, well, she was pretty and scary at the same time. She always acted as if she just wanted the rest of the Fist to accept her as one of them rather than being different because she was pretty or a girl. Cameron could understand that having grown up amongst dwarves his whole life. Shaking his head to try and clear the confusion he turns toward the church and starts shouting.
" Is iy one of your friends holding a knife to my friend Pru's throat? I thought you wanted us to stop fighting and talk about this. Instead you send invisible people out to capture us? You are seriously straining our friendship. I am starting to think you are using our friendship to take advantage of my friends and hurt them. Just like I don't want my friends to hurt you, I don't want your friends to hurt mine. Make that person back down right now and let Prudence go or so help me I will put a shaft through his invisible eye. If he doesn't back away from her we can't keep being friends and I can't do as you ask and help this end peacefully. "
Cameron prays he is staring at where the invisible attacker really is as he puts away his shield and draws his bow. Prudence's life may depend on it.
Bluff 16

DM Ezra: Charm Person only allows a save if Cameron is threatened or attacked by the caster or the caster's allies. Since it is Pru that is threatened, this would not be a cause for a new save throw. While the caster inside the church has convinced Cameron that they are long time friends, this does not necessarily carry to the caster's allies.

In which case, I'm human and miss things reading sometimes. Several of us are frustrated, tension is a little high, so please, let's not make things worse. I was requesting that we make things easier for the cleric. :) That's all.

May I point out, also, if Mr Invis is high enough level to kill her in a single stroke without Pru being prone (a coup de grace) then we're hosed, cus he is wearing a PrC that we shouldn't be tangling with. In game mechanics terms, it is unlikely she will die, especially now that Linden knows there is someone on her.

Fix to previous action: William's summoned eagle inflicted 4 points of damage from clawing Rufford once before the eagle was split in two.

William the Courageous sees Linden, Prudence and Cameron not fighting. He determines that Prudence must have an invisible attacker behind her and lobs an acid arrow in her direction.

Fortunately he misses Prudence, but successfully splatters acid across the cobblestones behind her. miss chance for concealment not rolled, last round.

He shifts and aims his crossbow at H2 (I'm assuming you are firing, as you didn't state you were readying an action, but did roll a to-hit). Firing into the tussle between Carver, Nikolai and H2, his shot goes wide (firing into melee is a -4 to hit penalty). Fortunately he also missed his companions.

Linden casts detect evil from a scroll and scans the battlefield. He is unable to detect any evil within his limited range, which unfortunately, does not include any of the group the Fist has attacked.

Nikolai tries once more to grapple the duel-wielding individual in front of him. Shifting between H2 and William, Nikolai puts his back to a crossbow aimed in his direction. It was likely the passing of the bolt between his head and H2's that slowed him just enough to loose his grip. (grapple just missed)

Prudence alerts the Fist that she is not just standing there hoping to avoid a fight as Linden and Cameron, but that she is under duress.

Cameron doesn't see anythign odd about Prudence, but he asks his long lost friend about the situation.

Carver suggests that Nikoai take care of the caster and spins to charge H2. Carver doesn't realize that it was Nikolai that he was aiming at, but since Nikolai moved aside, he is able to complete his charge at H2. His charge is just successful, causing grievous harm to the man.

Bliss reminds his companions that he is wounded and pulls a potion.

A crossbow bolt ricochets off a headstone next to William, it looks to have come from inside the church.

A dart flies out the window towards Nikolai, and misses.

Prudence hears the invisible man chanting the unmistakable words of a spell. Tinker hears a voice whispering in his head. They've turned on you! Kill them! Quickly! NOW! Will save DC 15, fail and you have an uncontrollable urge to kill your nearest ally, moving/charging to attack in necessary. She can hear the voice coming from her left.

You bastard's won't get the book! H2 yells as he strikes at Carver, driving his rapier deep into Carver's chest. His dagger swipe at Nikolai fails to connect. Hit and confirmed critical against Carver for 10 piercing. He then shifts a few feet into the graveyard.

Rufford has had enough and knocks the potion from Bliss' hand before he can drink the potion, followed up with two additional swings with his handaxes. Hit CMD of 12 for disarm. Bliss has no weapons, and may attempt an unarmed AoO, which would proc another AoO from Rufford. The two swings with the handaxes result in one hit against Bliss (you have a -4 for prone), resulting in another 9 damage.

The voice from inside suggests to Cameron that he should surrender before more blood is shed on this holy ground.

I do apologize, there seems to be some confusion. Last round William fired a crossbow bolt at H2, and missed. Standing next to H2 are Carver and Nikolai. From the church a dart and another bolt were fired, one bolt at William, one dart at Nikolai, both missing. H2 also missed a dagger swing on Nikolai. Nikolai comments about the avoidance of a bolt, dart, and dagger. That bolt came from William.

I hope that clears up where the bolt fired first in the round, at Nikolai, came from.

Next, we have the determination of who initiated hostilities. In a tense situation, casting a spell would be deemed much as drawing a sword, raising a mace over ones head, firing a shot off the bows, or a preemptive strike. Rufford responded to what he perceived as a preemptive attack by spell (he doesn't have spellcraft and wasn't interested in waiting to find out what kind of spell was being cast).

Cameron is under the effects of a mind altering enchantment, Charm Person. This spell provides some specific guidelines for the conduct and actions while under the spell. The first round Cameron asks his companions to stop fighting, some ignore him and attack anyway, killing one of the opponents. His next two rounds he continues to ask the Fist to stand down. He is ignored for the most part. Cameron fails a perception check but for some reason decides that Pru, behind him, must be under duress and walks back to her. Now that he is standing before her, he again fails a perception check to notice anything unusual (an 11) He yells out to the unknown caster in the church about the caster's associates. The response is that he should surrender before more blood is shed. Cameron draws his bow, while standing in front of Prudence, who has stated a knife is held to her throat. Cameron decides that the gods are at fault that his companions are not listening to him.

I can understand that being under a compulsion can be a challenge. I try to operate on a "reasonable person" basis. Would a reasonable person expect such action or inaction? Quite frankly, if the terrorist is holding a gun to someone's head, you don't walk up to them and pull your own gun, unless you want a dead hostage.

On to the recap and next round...

Bliss is bleeding out on the roof. Seeing that Bliss is no longer moving, Rufford drops his axes, picks up his own crossbow, and starts reloading. Yer friends shouldn't attacked us.

Carver suggests killing them all.

Prudence takes the opportunity to slip from the blade held to her throat and quickly arms herself.

Nikolai attacks H2, no longer interested in nonlethal means, and strikes H2, who crumbles over a headstone, his blood trickling down the stone, tracing some of the letters carved into the stone.

Tinker is able to disregard the spell cast at him, and moves towards the church. Standing in the door of the church, he discovers not one person, but three.

Lindentakes a step away, then charges which he can't do without the feat. He hopes to shield Pru and suggests that Pru run.

Cameron agonizes over his companions continued aggression's and surrenders.

William moves from S28 to M22, a distance of 45'. I don't see a means for William to double move and cast a spell.

Carver heals himself and moves behind the church. I don't recall stating there was a back door, (there isn't) and this is the first anyone has been there to see the back side. How are you rerolling the lay on hands? I don't see a house rule on rerolling a cure effect.

Linden feels a sharp pain in his hind quarters as a blade neatly slices into the tendons of his leg. critical hit and confirmed for 3 damage. Standing behind Linden is the man that had challenged the Fist previously, his body appearing as he swings and strikes at Linden. His image is some what blurred, with several images of him shifting around.

Prudence whirls and lets loose with an elemental bolt. The bolt flies under Linden and neatly strikes, an illusion. Surrender! Ye seem to be a smart lass, prove it!

Inside the church, a young man shrieks, much like a girl, and lets loose with a bolt of arcane energy, striking Tinker in the chest and singing his beard for 2 damage.

The only female calmly turns and points her crossbow at Tinker, you should have talked with your tongue rather than your blade. She smiles as she pulls the trigger sending a bolt deep into Tinker's leg for 6 damage.

The nearest man steps forward and attacks Tinker. Fortunately for Tinker, the rapier slashes into the door post. Unfortunately, the dagger sinks deep into his shoulder for 4 damage.

Tinker has sustained 12 damage.
Carver has sustained a total of 6+3+10=19-6-6=7 damage, using 2 of his 3 lay on hands.

OOC: You can perform a shield attack, without the feat, but as a result you lose your shield bonus to AC. As for the charge and 5ft step, I believe you are right. However, if I had thought about it, Linden is fast and could have made the attack in his normal movement.
As a result of this, did Linden get his Aid Another effect to work, because truthfully, it could have gone off without the charge. The charge was mainly used for dramatics and flavor.

IC:
Taking a dagger to the rump isn't a great thing, especially for the moron attacking a horse. In reaction to the knifing to the butt, Linden mule kicks at the man. (Hooves attack, miss both)
"Back off Sparky!"

DM Ezra: I must be blind, I can't find where you have spells memorized noted on your character sheet. I assumed that you were doing something fluffy, and took it that way, though if you really want to attack Pru with a shield bash, roll damage. I'm not sure what you were trying to aid Pru with. She withdrew and then readied an attack.

Ooc - Ezra , sorry about being of on the map movement. Not easy to read a map on my phone. Turn coming later

DM Ezra: No worries. If you really want to get off an action, add that you will stop at the limit of your move for the action, I'll then post where you got to along the way.

The effect on the caster, with multiple decoys, looks tantalizingly familiar to Pru, but she can't quite remember what it does. [Knowledge Arcana 21, which is 1 short of identifying a Mirror Image! Darn it!]

Pru moves cautiously around Linden [to AA-24] and fires another Elemental Ray, hoping that eventually she can hit her target. [Hit Touch AC 10 for 3 damage. Note that if the spell is Mirror Image, a "near miss" (within 5) can destroy one of the images.]

OOC: Thanks, Ezra, for the clarifications. I was thinking that Nikolai would recognize the source as William, but it sounded like there was another hidden shooting behind him. :}

What I'm going to try to do may be a little complicated. If I roll high enough, cool, otherwise, it won't matter. :)

IC: Nikolai only has fleeting thoughts about the man he just knocked out. 'I wonder if dad ever had one of those times where everything he tried to keep the peace failed?'

"Who you calling 'bastards'? Nikolai shoots back at the slumped man. Carver then comes charging around from behind and pokes his the pint of his lance into the window.

OOC: DM, how high are the windowsills? I presume there's no glass as the man inside threw a dart at Nikolai. If there is glass, then there was, as Carver just poked his pint into it.

IC: Nikolai things this is a good time to stay on the offensive. If the man inside is busy with Carver, then maybe he has a chance to get in. He dashes towards the window where H6 is dodging Carver's lance and tries to jump through it,

OOC: Vertical Jump DC is +4 per 1 foot of height (with at least 10' running start). If the window sill is 5' high, then the DC is 20.

IC: Acrobatics +10 = 12. This only clears 3 feet so,,,

If the window sill is 3' or less, Nikolai lands inside. Since he can't occupy the same space as H6, here's a roll to see which adjacent square he lands in: d10=3, or J14.

If the window sill is more thanm 3', he does not make it inside and ends up at L16. In which case he'll ask Carver to help him through next round.

(OOC: DM Ezra, your not blind, I don't keep my prepared spells or daily effects on my PC sheet because I don't seem to remember to update and repost them to GoogleDocs. Additionally, I'm accident prone at times and tend to save over things that I shouldn't, so the less stuff to have go wrong. I prefer posting updates in Spoilers in my PC post but that has been said to 'clutter' boards. Anyway, I'll post spells and effects in game to maintain sanity for both of us. ;)

My SacBond and Aid Another effects that I've mentioned are Domain Granted powers and have six uses per day. And if Linden can get to Bliss, he will use another power, Rebuke Death.
As to what Linden was doing, he was using his Aid Another power to boost Pru's AC +4, and said as much in my post. Aiding Another doesn't require a damage roll. I just have to hit AC 10 against a particular opponent, and as there was only one on Pru at that moment, I didn't figure I needed to state who the target was... but now, I suppose Linden must be able to SEE his target. :))

Round 1: Bliss casts a spell, and Cameron had continued to move forward beyond a point that the churchmen had designated as their line of engagement, these actions happened at the same time and they initiated hostile actions. Bliss is hit by a readied action, Carver is hit by a spell. William casts a spell.
Round 2: Cameron is enchanted, H3 casts a defensive spell, H4 cast invisibility. Carver kills one of the churchmen, Bliss casts another spell, William's eagle is summoned and attacks a churchman.
Round 3: H2 attacks Carver. Prudence has a knife to her throat. Nikolai attempts a grapple. Carver is attacked again. Nikolai fails another grapple attempt.
Round 4: H2 attacks Nikolai, Carver is hit by another magic missile. William fires at H2. Linden casts detect evil. Nikolai fails another grapple. Carver attacks H2. Rufford tries to drink a potion, and it is knocked from his hand by an AoO.
Round 5: A churchman misses William and Nikolai. H4 casts a spell on Tinker. H2 attacks Carver and misses Nikolai. A churchman mortally attacks Bliss. The enchanted Cameron is asked to surrender. Nikolai takes out H2. Tinker rushes the church door.
Round 6: H4 attacks Linden, becoming visible. Pru had a readied attack and hits a mirror image. Three churchmen inside the church attack Tinker in the door.

At this point, the Fist is performing their round six actions. While I am willing to make amends when I make a mistake after posting a round recap. I'm less inclined to do that if a player changes their mind several hours after the round is posted.

This encounter is highlighting a lot of differences between the DM style the players were accustomed to and my own. At the same time, I am becoming accustomed to the play style of this group of players. I understand that the majority of this group is seasoned, experienced players.

I'll try to be as clear in a post as possible or post any possible changes to my PC post before you make the DM post. Thursday March 20th, 2014 5:30:19 PM

Tinker is surprised there are three opponents in the doorway, he was thinking there were none and he could get the wizard! Disappointment turns to pain as three different attacks strike him hard. The dwarf realizes that three-on-one is only going to have one outcome... and then Cameron is in front of him, making it that much harder to go down swinging!

'Maybe you can put this to your advantage, Daemar', Tinker thinks quickly, and moves in a defensive series to keep as much of Cameron between Tinker and the three opponents. 'Maybe if Cameron is attacked, he will wake up from this nightmare.'

Out loud, Tinker has another tactic. "You may win and turn us all into zombies, but the Mailed Fist will avenge us and stop your evil deeds!"

"Look," thinks Mookie, peering down at Bliss's fallen body, "the blood has splashed and ran in a sort of a pattern ..."

The raven cocks his head from his hidey hole on top of the steeple.

"A pattern that kind of looks like ... letters?"

Mookie sees that fate or chance has let Bliss's flowing blood spell out a word on the roof!

The bird tries to make it out ...

"Red ... rum? ... nah ... Rose ... bud?"

Bliss stabilizes. His blood is no longer dripping off the roof. He had quite a bit for such a small creature.

Linden tries to mule kick H4, and misses with both.

Prudence shifts around Linden and fires another elemental ray, unfortunately, it also strikes illusion.

William, realizing that simple headstones only give some cover from in front or behind, and not as much from the side, or above, summons another eagle. H6 will have cover from L16.

Carver uses his 3rd lay on hands on himself, leaving him down by 3. He then rushes back along the side of the church and blindly stabs his lance through a window.I'm ruling 'no' on charging the window from the side with a lance, this drops your attack to a +5, and reduces the damage by half. "If you don't have line of sight to the opponent at the start of your turn, you can't charge that opponent."

Cameron realizes he would never surrender as suggested by his "old friend" rushes forward to try and shield Tinker, he gets there in time to see Tinker sliced, and diced.

Nikolai decides to try some parkour. He probably realizes he needs to practice more, as he somersaults over Carver's back, only to face plant the wall of the church. He slides down the wall and crumbles to the ground. (Prone for missing by more than 4. Your giving me conniptions! While you can move through an allies square, I'm gonna call running through a large creature as not possible (unless your are 3x smaller). That doesn't address the lance sticking through the window. And the window is higher than 3', they do give cover.

Linden realizes he still hasn't detected any evil while he contemplates how a centaur can climb onto a roof to assist Bliss.

Tinker steps back behind Cameron (V11) and chooses to consider a more defensive approach.

And thus ends turn #6!

On to turn #7
H5 scratches his head with a dagger, mailed fist? Call us zombies? you're the ones bragging about sending body parts through the post! He takes a readied stance, both weapons held at the ready.

H6 shrieks like a girl when the lance bursts through the window opening, and he jumps when Nikolai bounces off the side of the building. He casts a spell through the window. Carver and Nikolai both find a rainbow of colors wash over them (will save DC 14, failure is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 6 rounds). H6 then sidesteps next to the window.

H7 smiles at Cameron and sets her crossbow down, oh my dear friend, why do your allies vex us so? They really should listen to you. Won't you protect us? If Cameron would not typically try to protect someone asking for help, he may attempt an opposed Cha roll, DC 14. She addresses Tinker, you have been sorely wounded, why don't you come in and lay down, let us take care of those wounds for you. Tinker should make a will save DC 13 vs charm. (since he is not threatened nor attacked this round, the bonus doesn't apply.)

Meanwhile, outside, H4 channels energy, wracking Linden and Prudence with a sickening wave. Will save for half of 2 damage, DC 12. Well that was wimpy, maybe Pantheon wishes you idiots to live after all. Surrender!
