A pleasant night before, er, the day something happens. (co-DM JonathanT) Wednesday April 9th, 2014 11:23:44 PM
DM OOC: Short post tonight, as it looks like you guys want to discuss some strategies.
DM IC: The IA awake and start their preparations for the Day of Faith jumping ceremony and what fate the divinations have fortold. As all divinations, they are only one possibility, but the IA want to be prepared for as many as they can think of.
They start out with a good breakfast, as they say, it is the most important meal of the day. As they do so, they hear a little bit of 'rumble' coming from outside, which grows in intensity pretty quickly.
For those interested in looking out the window to see what's up, they see that the square in front of the Iron Tower is quickly being occupied by their neighbors. A few moments of observation reveals the tale-tell signs of a parade starting to get organized. Everyone is wearing their finest, or gaudiest, party costume and kidds run around in a mad chaos of excitement. Somehow, above all this clamor, street venders manage to sound off their wares. The whole square has been plastered with decorations along the store fronts and even the Iron Tower walls hosts many streamers, put there by the neighbors in the wee hours of the morning. Little do they know that inside that tower the IA are pondering how to defend their friends from an unknown something that might bring all this joy and celebration to an end.
DM JT: discuss your plans and stuff and we'll go a'jumping tomorrow. :) For spell scribbing, take into account how much rest you need in order to refresh your spells and go with that, subtracting the cost of scribbing from you PC sheet and adding the new ones. For Garret: do you remember how long it was said to take? You'd have an easier time finding that post than I.
Restlin (Carl) -- AC: +9/+6/+6 CMD: 22 HP: 89/89 (Spells) Luck Points: 4 Thursday April 10th, 2014 8:28:19 AM
Restlin looks at the scroll & wonder who he's supposed to return it to. Still, he's very happy for the young witch.
"I also swapped out a few of my less targeted spells. Summoning a bunch of murderous black tentacles in a crowd of civilians would probably damage our standing in town. I don't know how we can expect to plan for today's events when we have no idea what will happen. We're mighty, but we're not 'stop thousands of people from falling to their deaths' mighty. Let's just go out there, have a good time, keep an eye open, and spring into action should the need arise."
OOC: I thought we were told there wouldn't be time for scribbing.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:32/28/27 HP:104/104 Ki:13/13 CMD: 30] Thursday April 10th, 2014 5:44:47 PM
Garret grabs a few bites from the kitchen and looks out the window at the gathering crowds. When Beri mention strategy, Garret says, "But keep in mind -- if its someone who wants to attack, they may focus on us to take us out of the game early. Anyone who has been here for a time will know that we will be there and we will try and thwart any funny business."
Restlin (Carl) -- AC: +9/+6/+6 CMD: 22 HP: 89/89 (Spells) Luck Points: 4 Thursday April 10th, 2014 7:24:03 PM
Restlin pauses after Garret brings up a good point. "One more thing: we can't allow ourselves to get split up. We need to be sure to stick together." He turns towards Anrete & casually points the barbarian's way. "Remember what happened the last rime one of us got stupid and scouted ahead? Yea you do... that didn't work out so well."
Sesha [AC 20 /15 Touch/19 Flat] | HP 168/84 | CMD 19][See Invisibility] Thursday April 10th, 2014 9:38:39 PM
Sesha whacks Restlin with her broom.
"I remember it perfectly well Restlin. Don't you point at Anrete!"
She re-holsters the broom and self-consciously adjusts the flower in her hair.
"I'm kinda scared about this whole thing. Whomever we fight isn't going to care as much about the collateral damage as some of us might."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:23/16/16 HP: 85/85 CMD = 23 Thursday April 10th, 2014 9:51:21 PM Does anyone have requests for spells? I'm not planning on any healing spells right now, but I can add one if you think it's more useful.

DM JT to Restlin: OOC: I thought we were told there wouldn't be time for scribbing.
I figured that the spellcasters would need time to sleep and redo their spells, but then, I didnt' see why you couldn't scribe at least one.

We should all make sure we some way to keep from crashing to our doom if the bridge should be sabotaged. There are several spells that should work. If the worst should happen, I have plenty of rope we could use to hook each other together.

The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Friday April 11th, 2014 12:16:25 AM
While the Iron Adventurers look out upon their square, now getting pretty crowded, they discuss how best to handle the worst-case-scenario, like, if the bridge were to really fall. Restlin wisely dumps his area affect spells like Black Tentacles and such, for more precise targetting spells and they discuss how best to react to falling citizens and such.
Meanwhile, a large pole is raised upon which there is a banner with an embroidered tower much like the Iron Tower and the initials IA. Perception DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {Mara Weaver stands next to a strong young man and saying something to him while pointing at the banner. The young man nodds vigorously as she speaks.}
A knock is heard at the door.
Restlin (Carl) -- AC: +13/+6/+10 CMD: 22 HP: 89/89 (Spells) Luck Points: 4 Friday April 11th, 2014 8:04:20 AM
Caught off-guard by Sesha's broom, the wizard nearly ends up on the floor. He glances at her with his best, "who, me?" look before clarifying, "I figured we'd all know I was talking about myself." He wipes the bits of broom from his robe just before the door knocks.
"That's our public, most likely ready to get moving and wondering why we're not out there yet." He gets up, checks a mirror to make certain he doesn't have food in his teeth or broom in his cap, and moves towards the door. "Remember, folks: bad omens or no, this is still a celebration. Worry all you want, but get those happy faces on."
With that, he throws the door open...

Bosk AC: 32/15/29 CMD:28 HP 94 of 91 Spells Friday April 11th, 2014 12:04:45 PM
Bosk shakes his head. Who said the two are not related? We know the hooks from which the bridge is suspended are of tecuri origin, the statue we found below the city was crafted by the tecuri (bulette), and the one time we were arrested after our ranger spit on the floor of the courtroom the guards had tecuri weapons (mancatcher).

DM JT OOC: quick 'friday' post. Longer one tomorrow.
DM JT IC: Restlin opens the door with a smile on his face, encouraging the others to crack that smile too.
An elder gentleman dressed in festive guarb greets the mage. "Good morning Sirs. Pleasant Jump Day to you!" the man greets Restlin with a bow. "The parade to the bridge is ready to form up, Sirs. We await you to lead us. We should start out in 15 minutes or so. It will take some time to work our way to the bridge so we want an early start to make sure we get good spots on the bridge.
The man bows again and turns to leave.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:23/16/16 HP: 85/85 CMD = 23 Monday April 14th, 2014 6:18:14 AM I doubt the bridge would fall, that doesn't sound like it fits the visions that were seen. And stealing a hook would be almost impossible without the lost knowledge of the Tecuri. To me it feels more like they working on a distraction while they attempt something bigger.

The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Tuesday April 15th, 2014 12:50:00 AM
The gentleman answers Beri"Er... sure, as you please."
In short time, the IA members are ready to join the crowd in the square and start the parade to the Bridge. Upon exiting the tower cheers errupt. These people have heard of the events from the day before and are very proud of their Protector Group (especially since they don't charge a Chit for their service, just by being present is enough to keep things in order, it seems). Others, more familiar with the tower before the IA came into possession of it, help bolster those that may be newcomers.
The IA are ushered to a spot in front of the parade. Although at the moment it seems like a disorganized crowd, one the parade starts, citizens start falling in. Beri, in Air Elemental form, gets a wide berth. Garret entertains the crowd with antics and acrobatics. Other IA memebers keep vigilant but with smiles.
Soon the parade starts to encounter other parades and it takes an effort to stay in one formation. As a matter of fact, the tail end of the parade gets lost in the mass of people heading to the bridge.
Diplomacy DC20 to maintain the front half in some order, Diplomacy DC15 to keep the front part in shape.
The IA finally reach the brdige, though, and the bridge already seems crowded.
At the bottom of the rickety stairs heading up to the bridge itself, guards are all about checking everyone that starts up the stairs. Mages mingle with soldiers and it is clear they are scanning the people as they pass by pointing here and there at individuals, which are then taken asside by the guards. What actually ensues is hidden from view. Knowledge Arcana or Spellcraft DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {The mages have detect magic and scan the crowds.}
The noise is a cacophony of hawkers selling food, beverages, streamers, etc. To add to this chaos, mages and guards with flying spells zoom about as well. An elite guard group appear to have boots or other gear that give them flight. It seems that some suggestions were taken into account as to how to protect falling citizens. Or, this could be normal precautions, as the citizenry don't seem to take notice of all the precautions.
The IA arrive at the foot of the steps and Sgt. Capon suddenly appears out of the masses and motions the IA to the side. Waiting for them is Inspector Auslander. Above the din of noise, the IA are instructed to take up a position at the South Stair of the bridge. Of all the Protector groups, the IA are the most experienced, as most Protector groups are not much more than out-of-work mercenaries or ruffians. Those mercenaries that show better promise end up in better jobs. Inspector Auslander hopes that just the presence of the IA will be a big deterrant.
Floating in mid air out over the middle of the river is a large pole. Atop the pole is a sphere. There are numbers on the pole from 9 (at the top) to 0 (at the bottom).
The bridge is crowded and getting worse and movement is at 1/2, including flying, due to the cables and other fying or levitating people. The mood is festive, boisterous, excited, and seemingly unconscerned.
DM JT: there's roughly 30min before Jump time. Although the IA are on Watch, they may move about, eat, talk to passerbys, whatever, etc. Spells can be cast without Concentration Checks (take 10, so-to-speak).
I don't have a map but if it becomes necessary, one will magically show up. :)

When his companions get themselves in order, Restlin throws open the door to their tower and bursts outward. "Good morning, friends! Who's ready to jump?" He hopes that gets some attention & waits for the response to die down if it does.
"I'm afraid we haven't had time to make a proper banner for ourselves, what with all this keeping people safe we've been doing, so this will have to do..." With that, he pulls out his minor image wand & creates a figment of their tower in the air above himself.
As they march, he manages to keep the folks around him in order, but those in the back just become part of the crowd (diplomacy: 16). Oh well, it's a festival for the whole town anyway, not just their neighbors.

During the parade, Garret doesn't help keep the group together. If anything, he's a hindrance as he runs to and fro, greeting everyone he can, smiling, and asking questions of people (How many times have you been before? What's the most exciting thing you've seen? Where is the best food? What do you think will happen today?).
When they arrive at the bridge and are given instructions, Garret calms down a bit and looks around, also scanning the crowd, but not really sure what he's looking for (Perception: 20). When it gets close to time for the jump, he reaches up and touches a tattoo that runs from behind his ear to his neck. It glows blue for a second, then fades away (Activating barkskin).

DM JT: I won't get a post in tonight as I've got to be up at 3am to be at work at 4am. (payroll processing...) But here's some questions answered.
Bosk: Do we know at what time the jump is to take place / how long it a duration our spells would need to be to last from now to the jump?
DM JT: I believe I stated at 11am (may have been noon). The idea is that the city knows it will take quite some time for everyone that can get on the bridge to do so, and the city wants plenty of party time afterwards. The Jump istelf is quick. All those on the bridge jump in unison three times in quick succession. So, for practical puposes, the Jump is 1 Round in duration.
Restlin:"I'm afraid we haven't had time to make a proper banner for ourselves, ... DM JT: Mara has seen to it that a banner of the Iron Tower is already made (see my previous post Apr 11) Meanwhile, a large pole is raised upon which there is a banner with an embroidered tower much like the Iron Tower and the initials IA. and see the Spoiler text.
It might be a little obnoxious to create a banner when their neighbors have gone to such pain to make one for them. :)
Tink: Tink learns that all citizens born in Hook City proper are born with an ability to cast a cantrip, if not more, regardless of spell casting ability. So seeing minor magics cast here and there pretty much at will can be confusing at first, disconcerting at worst when expecting bad things around every corner and the foe is unknown. :)

He also looks about for a bard in the streets, offering to pay him to chronicle the events of the day and portray the neighborhood (including the IA as well as their neighbors) in a favorable light. Although he takes pride in his reputation, his goal is to elevate the reputation of the whole neighborhood, or at least make his neighbors smile when the hear the songs.

DM JT OOC: I got caught up working on the next module I almost forgot to post!
DM JT IC: The IA file out of the Iron Tower to join the parade and lead it to the bridge. Cheers errupt and somewhere brass instruments start blarring something that can't be distinquished above the din. Mara brings the young man with the Iron Tower banner with IA embroidered on it to meet you. The young man humbly bows but holds the banner with great pride. He is introduced as Pedrigo. (DM JT: his parents couldn't decide between Peter and Rodrigo, so there you go.)
Garret seems rather overwhelmed by the crowd. He notices the kidds running about, in and out of legs, but to him, it all is rather claustrophobic!
Sesha finds it just as difficult to fly on the broom as walking when she chooses to stay at low level (5'). At least she can easily shoot up above the building rooftops in a hurry if need be.
Anrete approves of the banner but his attention goes to food. Didn't he just have breakfast? This barbarian can really put food away! There is plenty of food about, he just has to work is way through the crowd to find it. Follow your nose!
Bosk sees a youngster staring at him and makes the kid an offer. A gold coin for a bag of candy. The boys eyes grow wide and he vigorously nodds. Trust a kid to know where candy can be found. And trust a kid to get through the crowd. He vanishes in a hurry.
Somewhere near the street that leads to the Marble Causeway, and thus to the bridge, the parade organizers start getting ready to move out. Pedrigo excuses himself and becomes the rally spot. Bosk looks for the kid and hears frantic shouting and spots the kid dodging legs but making good time through the crowd. But 10' from Bosk tragedy happens! The poor unfortunate kid, having gone so far and done so much, finally meets his match as he trips on a foot and fall flat. The bag of candy, held in front of him, bursts as the boy skids and tumbles, sending hard candy in a spray or rainbow colors in front Bosk! The poor kid looks up with utter terror and starts crying.
Tink begins to suffer sensory overload as her permanent arcane sight just can't filter out all the magical auras present. Hook City residents think nothing of the cantrips they can cast and have been doing so since the day they were old enough to grasp the knowledge of their abilites, around 4 or 5 years old. Maybe Tink will learn a discipline that will allow her to weed out unwanted auras.
Beri floats slightly above the crowd. Only bad thing about his form is that he can't partake in all the good food and drink. On the other hand, some mischievous kids find it funny to toss streamers through Beri. Then some kids find out that if they toss a wad of paper, it gets twirled and tossed out in a random direction. This soom becomes a game to see who is going to catch the wad of paper.
Restlin has Overland Flight cast on himself but for now keeps his feet on Terra Firma and takes the lead in the Parade, Pedrigo with the Iron Tower banner at his side. As they march, Restlin manages to keep the folks around him in order, but those in the back just become part of the crowd. Oh well, it's a festival for the whole town anyway, not just their neighbors.

Bosk enjoys the hard candy, perhaps a little too much. The sweet flavor floods his mouth in an explosion of pineapple and coconut, drowning out his other senses in complete mirth.
Perceotion = 18 (natural 1)
The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Thursday April 17th, 2014 11:36:47 PM Bosk is quite the guy when the mishap happens with his candy. Handing two gold coins over in exchange of what candy is left in the bag, the boy hugs Bosk's right leg real tight for a moment before dashing off. Those around that witness the incident, give a good laugh along with the minotaur's.
For most of the people here, this is the closest they've gotten to the IA and are now more impressed and comfortable around them in seeing their good nature.
katinka is one of those too.
Anrete eyes the spilled candy but fights the temptation to swipe some. Meanwhile Bosk has given the kids around permission to gather and keep what they get.
Restlin is quick and on his toes, gathering up enough candy near his feet for each IA member. "It's ok. Everyone likes candy." He hands a pretty pink piece to Anrete.
Beri has fun with the kids' games and plays along with them, even given special twists to the wads of paper and twirling streamers. Such a game, on any other day, would look incredibly silly, but today? It is just pure fun.
At the bridge, the IA take up their position and start watching for... well, for anything, which is very hard to do.
Garret puts his back against the side of an empty toll both and closes his eyes to calm himself from the swirling masses.
Sesha begins her spell preparations as well as the others, timing them just right. She wonders if that sphere and pole are of Teucri origin. She catches enough bits of conversation as the time passes to understand that it is not of Teucri origin. It is in fact the Count-Down clock to the Jump. She sees the numbers 0 through 9 along the pole, 9 being at the top. She hears a mother tell her kid that when the ball hits the bottom then they all jump up three times together.
Fifteen minutes to go and the bridge is about as packed as a sardine can. How anyone can jump in that crowd is anyone's guess, but it will happen nonetheless. Restlin's and Garret's sharp eyes catch something odd. Anrete sees Garret head down the stairs and follows. They meet up with someone who looks like the animal trainer. He shivers with excitement at the prospect of a fight.
With the animal trainer? Someone else? He don't care. :)
Katinka watches the two, ready for anything, but so soon?
Bosk also notices the party spliting up. When he sees Garret and Anrete meet up with the animal trainer, he weighs his options. A whole minute to get down the stairs due to his size and going against the flow of traffic, or dimension door down there. By far the quickest is Dimension Door. So does he leave his post now and make it down there in a minute or does he remain patient, knowing he can zap himself down there in mere seconds if need be?
Beri remains vigilant, floating around. However, he resolves to follow Bosk if the minotaur cleric decidies to go down.
Restlin keeps a happy fance as dozens and dozens of people file by despite his apprehension.
Sesha, all spelled up and ready to go, watches over the crowds as well.

However, the roll is only once.
As Garret tries to buy some time, he looks around for his friends. Anrete is breathing down his neck so his back is definitively covered. The other man glares at Garret, then speaks to Mr. Fermino, (the animal trainer), "Mr. Fermino, I must be off. The Jump, you know. No time for pleasantries. See you tomorrow," and turns to leave.
Garret was not able to see any evidence of the bag. It must be well hidden in the festive robes, somewhere.
Mr. Fermino turns to the man and shoots back, "No problem," and turns back to Garret, "Now where we, uhm... oh yes, so what have you found? Business picked up again y'know, but Mr. Mephistophalles is anxious to know what your deductions are. You know, we can't count on you being around all the time, eh?"
DM JT: due to the crowds movement, like a river with a strong current, the man will be whisked away up the stairs by the end of the round. If you want to stop him: Grapple Check DC15 to grasp his arm.
Or follow him: From the air_ Perc 10, with 'Stealth', roll Stealth check and we'll go from there. From the ground_ Dex 15 to dodge the crowds and Perc 15 (to keep him in view)
DM JT Note: basically, it's impossible to follow anyone from the ground using Stealth, as you can easily understand. However, if above the crowd (flying) and wanting to follow inconspicuously, a Stealth check is the way to go.

With a little over 14 minutes to go, Garret and Anrete engage in idle banter with the animal trainer from Mr. Mephistophalle's Menagerie and another stranger and Katinka's continual Arcane Sight spots magic auras on two Climbers different that the usual weak Cantrip auras on most the others.
While Sesha grumbles about having to 'work' on a Festival Day, Mr. Fermino seems wiling to continue to talk to Garret, mostly curious as to their findings on the mysterious release of the Spinosaurus but Garret seems to ignore his questions on the subject, being more interested in the stranger and the bag he saw the stranger take from Mr. Fermino.
The stranger is not interested in staying and turns to leave. Anrete tries to stop him but in his heavy armor he fails to negotiate the crowds and misses. Garret, closer and nimbler, snags the man's pant leg and asks "One moment, if you please. What was your name?"

He is curious about the events going on around him, but from the groups last encounter he knows his large size makes him the last person that should be chasing people among the cables, and a charging minotaur running through a crowd is one of the least diplomatic ways to get information and keep people calm, so he continues to wait and watch.

The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Friday April 25th, 2014 12:16:30 AM Katinka casts Message spell and relays to her friends that she believes the two are Dominated. She's afraid to try to dispel it and give her position away to the Controler.
She looks around for tthe possible Controler, believing he/she/it/they would have the same kind of magical aura. She sees none within her viewing range.
Sesha believes she should be doing something but doesn't want to give Katinka's actions away to whomever may be watching. Upon receiving Katinka's message, she suggests dispelling any enchantment spells on the Climbers so to draw out the culprints.
Anrete is so overwhelmed by the mob of people he has difficulty focusing. A food vendor passes by and he snatches up the last thing left in the man's tray. Glad to be rid of that last bit, the vendor tosses the tray and hussles up the stairs not even bothering to take Anrete's coin.
DM JT to Anrete: hey, get rid of those N1s now, eh?
Bosk wisely stays put. No point in dashing about hither and yonder, yet. When he recieves Tinka's message, he turns to Aulander who is standing next to him, waiting to get a report on Tinka's invisibility antinks and tells him what she's found.
Aulander's eyebrows rise and is off in a split second heading to the Security Mage's to report on the findings.
Restlin conforts Sesha in that they are doing something, even if they aren't 'doing' something, just by being the anchor point between the two investigations. He whispers back, asking Katinka to confirm the nature of the enchantments on the two.
Katinka's Arcane Sight confirms the Enchantment School and the strength is equivalent to a level 5 spell. A Knowledge Arcana DC25 will confirm what the exact enchantment is.
Garret bids Mr. Mephistophale's animal training farewell but gives him a last look-over.
Garret leaves with the notion that the man was not entirely on the up-and-up. The animal trainer is very glib but the hafling monk gets an uneasy feeling that there was more to the whole thing than what they were told.
Beri gets Katinka's message and decides to try to dispel the enchantment himself.
Dispel Magic: two ways to do it. A general dispel which targets any/all spell effects, starting with the highest spell level and going down until one is dispelled, or targeting a specific spell effect. What you need: A) Dispel Check: d20+ caser level B) Name the specific spell to target, Knowledge Arcana DC25
If you are just shooting in the dark, your Dispel Check will dispel the highest level spell your roll can beat. It may be the one you want, it may not be.
Otherwise, roll your Knowledge spell to know the specific one to target, then your Dispel Check vs the DC of the spell, which I'll let you know after you decide which way to go. :)
The Climbers seem to be going about their business. At this point, their behavior seems in line with the others, that is, inspecting the cables, since it is common for some to snap during the Jump event.

Sesha shrugs.
"A dominate spell like that uses a lot of magical power. Obviously these two are lynchpins in a plan that Jantierri's divination said could be muddled. If I could do it I'd turn em invisible too. Everything said thus far floats over the barbarian's head as Anrete bite another chunk from his drumstick.
The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Monday April 28th, 2014 9:53:44 PM Garret and Anrete head back up to the top of the stairs. Garret manages to tell Anrete "Remember those faces, I think there's something going on there," despite the noisy crowd.
At the top of the stairs the two find that Katinka is gone and Beri is floating up near the bottom layer of cables doing flips and pirouettes.
Restlin is busy conferring with Katinka and Sesha but Garret and Anrete get the update from Bosk.
It appears that Katinka has figured out that two Climbers nearby are enspelled with the Dominate Person spell, which she points out is pretty high in power. A short debate is going on as to how to deal with this, dispel it or leave it? Sesha has an idea of maybe how they could be put out of action without alerting the culprit by using a Sleep spell and Feather Fall if necessary, and she awaits word from Resltin for the 'Go Ahead'.
Beri gets his dispel ready but wisely waits for the 'go ahead' word as well. It is critical that both are dealt with at the same time or all their plans may be in vain.
Restlin bids that they hold off on their spell casting for now and let Inspector Aulander try handling the situation first. The IA are doing their job in keeping watch, let the inspector deal with what they find. He conveys that if nothing has happened by 5 minutes to Drop time, then he'll change his mind.
At least, for now, they have a plan that could work. If put to sleep, they would fall, as none are tethered. The nature of the cable webbing pretty much prohibits any tethers unless they are actually doing repair work. Right now they are simply going up and down a cable here and there, looking up and down as if searching for something. These two are behaving as all the others are. Perhaps other things completely unrelated are at work here, Restlin poses.
Meanwhile, Inspector Aulander has met up with a Senior Security Mage. Unseen by the IA, a deep discussion ensues. If the IA could witness it, they probably would recognize much of what they just had gone through, a debate on how best to deal with the two. And if there are two, could there be more?
Several other Security Mages are called over and join in the planning discussion and time passes so slowly but by 4 minutes later (10 minutes before Drop Time), the inspector returns to the IA's position.
Inspector Aulander has not lost his air of business and briskly informs the IA that two Security Mages and a couple of the Flying Security Guards will be in position by now to remove the enchantment from the two. By his demeanor, one would think that this was just another exercise in an ordinary busy day.
It happened so fast that no one down bellow really noticed what happened except for the IA, who knew where to look. The two Climbers lost their grip due to their momentarily disorientation from being freed from the domination link that they began to slip. The Flying Security Guards quickly swooped in and snatched them up and carried them to a tent at the base of the stairs.
Inspector Aulander silently motions the IA to follow him and in a couple more minutes they are in the tent facing the two Climbers, who look rather bewildered.
DM JT: the DM graciously allows the IA to start the questioning, if they want. :)
Restlin (Carl) -- AC: +13/+6/+10 CMD: 22 HP: 89/89 (Spells) Luck Points: 6 Tuesday April 29th, 2014 8:36:14 AM
Restlin blinks in amazement. The bureaucracy of Hook City moved quickly and took care of a potentially dangerous situation gracefully and in an ideal manner. He makes a note to not underestimate the Inspector's abilities in the future. On the way into the tent, he lightly elbows Sesha & gives her his best "see, I was right!" face. Upon reaching the entrance, he addresses Anrete, "it's very important that no one gets in here. Feel free to stand outside and intimidate anyone who tries getting too close!"
Inside, he turns to Aulander. "Excellent handling of the situation, Inspector. Thanks for being so attentive to Tink's concerns." Then, he turns towards the climbers with a warm smile. "Well met, friends. I hope we didn't rattle you too much, but something is amiss today and time is very, very short. You appear to have fallen victim to some sort of enchantment. If you could tell us what you remember from the last week or so, especially anything you were about to do up in the cables."
He wastes no time detecting magic or further enchantments on the two, trusting Tink and Sesha much more than himself when it comes to enchantments.

The Inspector concurs and explains, "The cabling on the bridge is divided into cubic zones, each one with a coded number. Each zone is marked off and the Climbers know what to look for. Teams of Climbers are assigned a zone, usually for life. So the zone these two were in would be where to start."

Restlin is concerned about the fate of these two climbers. "Dominate person is a powerful spell. No one here would be immune to it." He realizes he has little say in their outcomes, but hopes to at least cool Aulander's jets a bit. He then realizes why they were paid in coin. "Wait, if each climber team has a set area to maintain, and the area these two were responsible for collapsed, all the chits in the world would be useless to them. They're worthless outside of Hook City, and this would be the last place they'd want to be if their cables snapped."
He watches Capon go out to take care of the inspection. He knows the Seregant is a capable person, but still...

Once he's aware she's listening, he'll explain what's going on, what Capon's off to do, and will suggest she keep an eye on things. "You're small and sneaky enough to get close, and Wardd knows you don't miss anything." With that, he heads back inside.
"How long will it take a new set of climbers to reach and inspect those cables? Does anyone here have the authority to delay the jump if necessary? Delaying it would be tragic, of course, but not nearly as tragic as the cables failing."
One more question for the climbers, one he's sure Sesha's wondering herself. "This person who offered the coin, did she have dark skin, by any chance? Like my friend's here?" He gestures to Sesha.

The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Thursday May 1st, 2014 11:26:42 PM
The interrogation continues... Restlin is concerned about the fate of the two Climbers. Was it their fault they failed to fight off the spell and thus had no full control of their actions? He'll have to trust the authorities on that issue.
He hopes that the cloaked lady leaving a calling card is a sign of overconfidence and surmises that the reason for coin payment was for their use outside Hook City, only place they'd be able to live if something happened to the bridge.
He steps outside for a moment and confers with Katinka, asking her to follow Sgt. Capon and using her good eyes to keep watch on things in the cabling, as she doesn't miss anything.
Back inside he asks another question that nags him, and probably Sesha as well, This person who offered the coin, did she have dark skin, by any chance? Like my friend's here?" He gestures to Sesha.
"No My Lords," they answer quickly.
Beri asks "Would you be able to point out the specific cables to us?
"Not precisely, as we were not watching," the talkative one answers.
Inspector Aulander nods. "At this point, it would take more time to have them return to the cables and look for any damaged ones. Sergeant Capon will have quicker results with the Climbers already there. Depending on what they find, and how many, it doesn't take long to repair a cable, specially with several working together. If we have to delay the Drop by a few minutes, no one will really notice. More than 10 minutes and people with those magical timing gizmos will start to wonder what's going on. But I don't want to start a panic and announce a hold on the Drop. A panic at this time could be worse than what the portents suggest. Perhaps it is a mass panic the portents point to?" the inspector answers the IA's concern.
Garret sees an odd meat-on-a-stick and asks how much. This particular 'dish' cost a white chit. The vendor explains that it is a sea creature hard to catch. The meat looks like a long appendage with one side having suction cups. It is grilled with a sticky, tangy sauce. The vendor assures Garret it is well worth the chit.
Meanwhile, Bosk, Anrete, Katinka, and anyone else outside, watch Sgt Capon confer with a man wearing a Climber uniform but has a patch different than the others. He quickly blows a whistle (but can't be heard) and immediately heads up a cable. They can see a number of Climbers converging on the supervisor.
Time to Drop is 8 min.

DM JT: Keep posing questions and we'll keep rolling through the weekend.
Katinka follows Sgt Capon and witnesses the man's business like, get-to-the-point quickly, command of the situation. The IA are used to the sergeant showing up at their door with a job or just checking in. It appears that the Sergeant is far more capable than first appearances would indicate.
Sgt. Capon has the Climber Supervisor appraised of the situation in seconds and withing another minute the cables in the section in question is swarming with Climbers. Another couple minutes and those silent whistles are tweeting, but only Katinka, in her hidden position, notices anything unusual as the festivities below occupy everyone else's attention. Eyes keep looking at the ball suspended on the numbered pole over the river. No one wants to miss the timing and jump at the wrong time. Bad Karma.
Anrete, outside and not aware of why all the rushing about, keeps grimacing at the crowds. A number of festive kids take up position a dozen feet away and start mimicking the barbarian. They think it's a game.
Garret eyes the long appendage on a stick. Should he try it?
Bosk watches the cables. He tries to do so without drawing attention. People bump him here and there but otherwise are laughing and joshing with each other.
Restlin asks where the woman had approached the Climbers. They both answer "In the tavern, we were drinking an ale to relax after a days work. Witnesses? I dunno. Probably. Probably all drunk. That was last week. Who'd remember anything now? They'd have plenty of drink since then."

We should focus on what details they remember... what type of cables they were avoiding, was it closer to the Hook end or the bridge end. Did anything their enchanter say to them stand out? Any perfume they smelt or jewelry they noticed? Any indication that there are more people involved? Or worse yet, that there are more captives? A fight would be bad enough, but I don't like the though of fighting a small army of innocent but possessed citizens.

Tink folds her arms and huffs. "At the risk of making you appear crazy to onlookers, perhaps it would help if we go back over what we have learned. A cage was opened to let a creature out. Why would anyone show their hand prior to the main event? Were they testing? Was it a distraction? Noone saw who did it. With the revelation of people being enchanted, I wonder if perhaps one of the Menagerie personnel were also subjected to such a spell? Hmmm... we do not have time to investigate them now"
"And those people that we chased. Who were they? How do they tie in to this? They no doubt saw us so know we are after them."
"And those blasted cards. First the 2 of diamonds. Now the Queen of diamonds. What do they mean?"
"Who is it casting enchantment spells on people? Is it a woman at all? Could she be the Queen of Diamonds - the Red Queen?"
"The prophesy from the seer mentioned that we would be in a fight near a teucri artefact. It cannot be referring to the hooks. Any fight in Hook City would of course be near one of the hooks. No, to say it would be near a teucri artefact means something else. A different artefact. I wonder. I wonder..." Tink's voice trails off as she thinks. The Day of Faith arriveth (co-DM JonathanT) Monday May 5th, 2014 11:38:10 PM Garret joins the kids imitating Anrete.
Anrete frowns and glares back fiercely at the pesky kids, one of them a little bigger than the others.
Sesha starts to loose her patience and after a quick conference with Pot-Pot, then with a loud sigh she decides to go outside where she takes to the air on her broom.
Katinka leaves the vicinity of the cables where she was watching the Climbers and zooms down to Sesha. "How goes the interrogation?" she asks.
Sesha replies "It goes, but it's a waste of time I think," and quickly fills Katinka in on the progress inside the tent while pretending to wave at no one particular. Then she asks how things are going outside.
Katinka answers Sesha, filling her in on the activities up in the cables. She then goes over the pieces of the puzzle they've collected so far trying to see what fits and how it points to the prophesy. She points out that they may be, in fact, in the wrong place and that it may be a different Teucri artifact they need to protect. Unfortunately, she's rather new to Hook City and does not know of all the Teucri artifacts or where they'd be.
The kids around Garret and Anrete suddenly notice some commotion over near the ball and with shouts of glee rush up the stairs to the bridge. Garret wavers on who's the boss, his stomach or his mind, as he contemplates more food while it is clear the moment they have been waiting for is close at hand.
Beri shares his thoughts with katinka and Sesha. He has good points to ask, like what jewelry was noticeable, what perfume, what are of the cabling was not watched, and so forth. He asks if there were more involved, or were there any more dominated? Would they have to fight a bunch of dominated civilians?
DM JT question: did Beri revert back to human form? I remember you asking about how long to Jump and if you'd have time to change. I don't remember if he did or not.
Beri's question's are answered (either directly or through translation). There did not appear to be any jewelry that could be used to identify the ones that had meet the two in the tavern. As far as the cables go, each section goes the length of the cables from the bridge to the magical hook, so an inspection of the entire length of the cables in the entire section is necessary. Whether there are others dominated they don't know, but conclude that there must be since at times they were directed to meet several others during their shift and don't know really why.
Outside, the group notice a brass band on a floating platform take to the air and stop near the ball and pole. The crowds cheer and the band starts playing tunes.

DM JT to Beri: I've got no problem with an Air Elemental 'Jumping'. A Huge Earth Elemental, well that is testing your faith, Ha! :)
Restlin is about to leave the tent, with the festivities nearing Jump Time and the need for the IA to be in their position, but a dark, sinister man enters, blocking the way momentarily. He leads another man in and Garret follows. "Hey, I know that fellow!", the halfling points at the man being led.
Restlin recognizes that it is the man Garret and Anrete met down at the bottom of the stairs some 15 minutes ago. He recognizes the man to be from the Treasury but does not recognize the man himself.
Inspector Aulander has a quick conference with the dark, sinister man and then he leaves. The inspector then turns to the IA members inside the tent, "This is Artemus, an official of the Treasury. We saw two of you conversing with him and the circus man and got curious. What were these two doing together like that? So we followed Artemus and pulled him aside. He gave us some story about getting rent money from the circus, but that is bogus. Artemus is not in the Collections Department. As you can see by his badge, he works in the Chit Collections and Distribution Department."
The inspector turns to Artemus. "We can make this short and painless, or long and excrutiating. We have the means to get the truth by delving into your inner consciousness. But the more work it takes to get to the truth, the worse it will be for you. Which will it be?"
The contents of the bag that Garret so intently tried to spy is now spilled out onto the table. Along with a lot of platinum coins, is a playing card. The guard holds it up.
It is the Queen of Diamonds!"
Outside, the others watching the Climbers see them spot a cable here and there that is damaged and start immediately to repair it. It appears they use magic, as Katinka and Sesha can see minor magic spells being used, primarily Mending. But time is running short. The Day of Faith officials are gathered around the ball on a floating platform and the band stops playing.
"Gentlemen, Ladies, Guests, stomp our feet and get ready, for the Time is Night!" he shouts out, a shout that is magically carried the span of the bridge.
Everyone looks intently at the ball, holding their breath. A sudden silence engulfs the bridge as if a titanic Silence spell has been cast over it.

Restlin starts yapping at the card in frustration, thinking that perhaps it is a scrying foci for the mystery woman. "Think she'll answer?" he asks the minotaur.
Whereas Sesha thinks something interesting is about to happen, Garret there's about to be trouble. Quite contrasting views!
To Anrete, the card can't be eaten or buy something to eat, so, oh well... :)
Beri surmises that Artemus is just another pawn. He checks out the coins for magical properties but finds none.
Katinka, flying and invisible, doesn't have to concern herself with jumping, so she watches the crowd instead of the ball, looking for anyone that may be acting suspicious. She sees none.
Bosk also watches the crowd but they all seem to be watching the ball.
Up in the cabling, Climbers are frantically repairing some damaged cables!
Then, the count down starts as the ball starts to drop! 9....8....7....6....5 the crowds chant as the ball passes each numbered marker... 4...3...2...1...
and at 0 a whistle blows and the whole mass of people (minotaurs, elves, dwarves, halflings, humans, etc.) take a giant leap upwards and come down crashing all at once. There are shouts of joy and glee and laughter as the whistle blows again just as the mass comes down and the whole mass jumps up again.
The bridge shakes uncomfortably at the first Jump, shakes horribly at the second Jump, and the whistle blows a third time and the third Jump takes place.
Upon the third Jump, the bridge shakes alarmingly and a few cables at the IA's end snap!
Climbers sway in the cabling but hang on, the bridge shudders but seems to settle... then...from the other end, screams are heard as more of the cables snap, enough to cause the bridge to tilt dangerously!
People loose their footing, some are tossed to the railings, some of the trade buildings crack and crumble!
The security force flying around move quickly but can they get to everyone that is heading over the railing?
Can the IA reach the other end in time to help?
Is THIS the end of the famous Hook City Bridge?
Just then, just when the IA's instincts are about to take over to help save lives, Artemus blurts out is desperation "THE BRIDGE! SHE SWORE SHE'D NOT HARM THE BRIDGE! IT WAS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A DISTRACTION! OH MY! WHAT HAVE I DONE?"
Inspector Aulander grabs the man by his collar and yells "WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'JUST A DIVERSION? SPEAK UP!"

He thinks quickly. Beri, Tink, Sesha, and himself all have the ability to fly. That leaves Anrete, Bosk, and Garret. Anrete doesn't look like he weights that much; Bosk should be able to carry him.
Reaching back into the masterfully created quiver the minotaur crafted for him, Restlin pulls out his extend metamagic rod. He holds it up & smacks Bosk in the chest with a feather. "There, you can fly. You have a little under 15 minutes. Grab Anrete and let's get out of here."
Luckily, Restlin's had overland flight cast on him this entire time. Telepathically, he asks Shiny to cast bull's strength on him, giving him more than enough umph to carry Garret. He squats down so the halfling can hop on his shoulders, then takes off.
"We're on it, Inspector! Wardd's luck be with you with the mess here!"

Knowledge, local to know to quickly get to the treasury, and the best way to enter that will get them to the chit machine: 36. Good thing I got that nat 20 out of the way!
RobC - Katinka Hushfoot AC 20/16/15 -- CMD 19 -- HP 102/102 -- Perm Arcane Sight, Darkvision, See Invisibility Thursday May 8th, 2014 11:07:55 AM "Wait, we're going to leave people to potentially fall to instead foil a robbery?" Tink questions this logic. Surely the safety of the people is more important than money "Are you sure your forces have the bridge in hand?" she asks of the Inspector
Anrete AC:31/18/31 CMD:32 HP:134/134 DR:2 Thursday May 8th, 2014 11:13:27 AM
Anrete grins as he prepares for battle.
"C'mon Bosk-minotaur, let's fight!"
We Interrupt Your Regulardly Scheduled Hook City... (Ian M. posting for James D.) Thursday May 8th, 2014 4:11:19 PM
ATTENTION PLAYERS/DM
A massive hail storm has taken out James' internet, and his post today will likely be late.
Inspector Auslander, Additional Post (co-DM SteveK) Thursday May 8th, 2014 4:51:22 PM
Katinka's question seems to put Inspector Auslander back on even footing, at least mentally. He harumphs. "There must be 100 spellcasters on this bridge right now that can cast Clear Level spells, missy." (ooc: Clear = 9th level spells) "But I don't know who they are or how to get to them in time. THEY can take care of the Bridge and the people. YOU are the only ones that I know I can trust and can get to the Treasury in time to foil a robbery that will destroy Hook City's economic stability!"
Already, Katinka and others can see spells going off all along the bridge, everything from Web and Featherfall to Reverse Gravity or even Wishes and MIracle spells. It certainly looks like Inspector Auslander knows what he is talking about.
Restlin easily knows where the Hook City Treasury is. Not a place well known, but the wizard was observant. The Treasury is below the South Hook Municipal Building.

Garret hops on Restlin's shoulders without a pause and yells, "Let's go!"

It's all in the Timing, don't look like a dweeb (co-DM JonathanT) Thursday May 8th, 2014 9:28:38 PM
DM JT OOC: oh, by the way, if you didn't notice, SteveK is taking over this scene. I want to thank all of you for being patient through this scene. I know these 'who-dunit' ones can be boring. I tried to spice it up some and you guys did a good job in chipping in with your creativity.
Good luck with the next scene. :)
I'll get you the xps for the scenes soon.
Bosk! Thursday May 8th, 2014 9:43:37 PM
Feeling light on his feet, Bosk lets Anrete climb up on his back before taking off. He knows Anrete is strong enough to hold on, so he concentrates on his flying.
OOC: It's a little before 9, but I'm getting tired.
