Where the Peaceflower Grows

DM Kathy
Sunday April 20th, 2014 10:26:49 PM

In the end, you decide to spend the night in the grotto. The treants help you find comfortable places to sleep, and you find the grotto a wonderfully restful place in which to sleep. That is, if you're not one of those people who feels nature's call every time you hear running water.

You awaken refreshed and head out on your quest. Your journey is largely uneventful, and in the afternoon of the second day you draw near the place that Babarong described. You see movement ahead of you, and you can tell that the plants here are, in fact, wild.

Watching carefully, you see three medium-sized plants, Knowledge Nature DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Basidironds}. You see one large plant, Knowledge Nature DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: { a Shambling Mound}. And there are two huge plants, Knowledge Nature DC 18 Highlight to display spoiler: {a Moonflower} and Knowledge Nature DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {a Tendriculous}. They surround a patch of irridescent purple flowers, which match Babrong's description of Peaceflowers. You'll need a plan of attack.

[Everyone take 800 XP for the previous scene. Yay! I remembered!]

Rag doesn't know too much about plants and his survival skills only give little hints of what could be dangerous or not... (Survival 17)

"I'm no gardener friends and some of these do look dangerous... all I can do is wrestle the dangerous plants hoping to get someone through... does any of yiu know which is the peaceflower??

"Ok, I don't think they've seen...or whatever they do to detect prey, us yet. We need to plan this out."

"See the smaller ones? Basidironds, nasty things, they can release hallucinogenic spores and will need to be dealt with from afar, otherwise one or more of us might go lalaland and become salad food. Can't quite figure out what the large one is, doesn't look friendly, anyway. And the two bigger ones aren't much less nasty, they both can swallow a man whole, much like our lizard friends the other day, don't think anyone wants an encore of the experience, but is still better than the beautiful death the smaller ones will give you, so they can be dealt in melee."
, says Faust, hiding behind a tree.

"It really is troublesome that they surround the peaceflowers, we need to lure them away otherwise our fight might damage them. At the very least break them in two separate groups, all six at once will be deadly to anyone getting close.", says Faust, worried about throwing a Fire Ball or Sleet Storm centered at the peaceflowers and warning everyone not to get close, at least not until half of them are down.

As the group nears the area, Yeshua and Truman stop and check out what they can tell about these creatures... He knows that Faust has identified some so he adds, "The big one, it's a shambling mound, another one that's not friendly and the others are a Moonflower and Tendriculus... Yes, getting to the flowers is going to be hard, and I'd rather not get into a fight with them if we don't have to... I like the fireball and sleet storm idea, as I'm not a ranged attacker... Truman and I can fight them head on, but not all at once... Let's see if we can wear them down with magic first?"

You share some information about the plants, and agree that this is going to take some thought.

Perhaps a map would be helpful. Yes, my spreadsheet program has a little flower-drawing tool, and I had way too much fun with it. :) You guys are approaching from the southeast; if you don't change direction, you'll enter the map at about Y-20. The purple patch is the peaceflowers.

From what everyone knows about the plants ahead. I say magic, or at least range attacks are the best way to start out. To bad plants don't have an 'energy' type persay... Za speaks his mind a bit before moving into position. The only ones I recognize are the Basidironds; I'm thinking if we start with the one closes to us, I'd bet the others will check to see what killed off their little friend. What do you guys think?

IF no one objects to his reasoning, Za will walk a little north of their current path, stopping at X,16 and cast Scorching Ray at B3 (OR 35ft from B3- Exactly in range for his scorching ray spell.)

Hit TOUCH ac 15 for 12 fire damage.

IF more than one person thinks it a bad idea, or attempts to stop Za, he will NOT cast the spell, but still move forward to Y,16.

OOC: Updated Za to lvl 7; making him now a 4th lvl fighter, 3rd lvl wizard.

(I think I've got a plan for this. If anyone's up for it, we should try this plan out.)

"I recognize all of these plants. The tendriculous has a healing ability that will quickly close any wounds we give it, unless they are wounded by acid or blunt force. Rag specializes in that, so he'll be able to deal with it. The moonflower also has some natural healing ability, and is completely immune to the effects of cold, but is very weak to fire. A well placed fireball will deal with it, and if it comes to dispatching it normally, we'll have to cut it down. The shambling mound however is resistant to fire, but it doesn't have any other special defenses, so I'll be focusing on that one. The basironds aren't hurt by the cold, but it will prevent them from using their spores."

Toregan looks over the field, identifying the plants locations. "Za, wait! Try to focus your fire spells on the moonflower and try to chill the basironds. Rag, try go after the tendriculous, and I'll deal with that shambling mound!"

Toregan then moves up and fires a shot at the shambling mound.

"Sounds like a great plan, mr. Dondarin. However, I ask you guys to not close in quite yet, I can put the Moonflower, Tendriculous and the easternmost Babarong temporaly out of comission with a Sleet Storm, so I'd vouch we focus on the remaining three first."

"But, as I said, stay close so I can Haste you all in a sec and you'll be allowed to go nuts. Also, Scarecrow, since you're the most likely to go bump fists with the Tendriculous, here, have this Acid Flask, won't make a whole lot of damage, but might help you regardless. Casting Sleet Storm centered at O14, it has a 40ft radius, so it covers a circle from H14 to X14 and O6 to O23 (jeez, this thing's huge!).
Creatures inside it cannot see (blocks all sort of visual input) and have to make a DC10 Acrobatics check to move at half speed, otherwise can't move on this round. It'll last for 7 rounds.

Za'Reed moves up, intending to cast a Scorching Ray on one of the Basidironds.

Toregan attempts to forestall him, arguing that heat is better used against the Moonflower, and cold for the Basidironds.

However, since nobody else seems to object to his action, Za'Reed fires his spell. It hits and does damage. Meanwhile, Toregan moves up and fires at the Shambling Mound. He, too, hits and does damage.

Yeshua and Truman remain where they are, waiting to see what will happen.

Faust casts a Sleet Storm, which is going to make ranged combat interesting for a few rounds.

The nearest Basidirond (#3), manages to move out of the Sleet Storm, taking a double move to be sure.

You are unable to see the remaining plants through the Sleet Storm, so you're not sure where they are or what they're doing. The map has gotten smaller because you can't see through the Sleet Sotrm.

Yeshua and Truman hold position. [Note: I have embiggened the map. In your next post, please give me map coordinates.]

Toregan is ready to shoot, but cannot see Basidirond #3 from where he is standing.

Faust moves and readies an attack. [I'm not really sure what you meant, but I made my best guess.]

Basidirond #3 moves forward, coming around the edge of the sleet storm. Unfortunately, this also brings it into range of Toregan's and Faust's attacks, and it crumples under the onslaught. [Toregan's damage alone was not enough to bring it down, so Faust's ready would also go off, but I believe even Faust's minimum damage would finish it off.]

You cannot see what the other plants do.

I have embiggened the map. Everybody should now be on the map; Yeshua, please give me coordinates for you and Truman. Everyone, please remember that if you don't give me specific map coordinates when you move, you are inviting me to guess. :)

Za holds his sword at the ready, reactivating arcane strike as needed so it's fully in effect when the enemies finally show themselves or the storm dissipates. Za feels cutting away with his sword is a better plan than using his spells.

He walks with his body facing the storm, his gaze never wavering from the edges where the wild plants may appear. With quick steps he makes his way infront of Faust, X, 17. His sword held up, back and knees bent slightly, near shoulder height ready to be gripped with his left hand and twirled around and over his head. The arcane power he extends to his precious bonded weapon makes it seem as though a thick purple disc wraps around his head before flying at its target.

But for now its held at the ready, awaiting a target slightly moving up and down as the arcane drow warrior breathes in and out deeply. Focused on the objective and confident that it will be accomplished, after the battle has been won of course.

So how much longer will your storm last? And it would be a great time to cast some buff spells while the plants are enduring the mini ice age

Za'Reed adjusts his position and waits, suggesting that this might be a good time for buff spells.

Yeshua and Ragnarök continue to wait, asking how much damage will be done by the Sleet Storm.

The answer, of course, is "no damage at all." The spell blocks line of sight and makes footing difficult; it is not a direct-damage spell. The plants don't exactly like it in there, but the're not hurt.

Toregan moves around the bottom edge of the Sleet Storm and immedately sees where all the plants have gotten to. He fires a shot at the first one he sees, another basidirond. It's a good shot, but not quite good enough.

The basidirond releases a cloud of spores. Toregan must make a DC 16 Fortitude save or Highlight to display spoiler: {You're melting! Grasp hold of yourself in an attempt to hold yourself together, and take no actions for 1 round.}.

Then the shambling mound comes up an slams a leafy arm at Toregan, but luckily misses. It's 65 feet from Za'Reed; I'm not sure what the range is on your thrown weapon.

Behind the shambling mound, Toregan can see the moonflower, moving through the trees in a way that no plant should ever move. And behind the moonflower comes the tendriculous. There is, as yet, no sign of the third basidirond.

And the map. There is still a cloud of spores around B1, but since the PRD clearly states that the spores are invisible, I'm not putting them on the map. I have to maintain my Evil DM credentials somehow.

The shambler tries to grab hold, but Rag is having none of that nonsense, thank you. [OOC: do you have some kind of power that lets you double-move and attack in the same round? Or is this a charge? Or are you spending a Hero Point?]

Toregan steps back and fires a series of shots at the basidirond. He does a lot of damage, but the plant is still moving. And, despite that step back, Toregan is still in the spore cloud! You must succeed at a DC 16 Fortitude save or Highlight to display spoiler: {You're melting! Grasp hold of yourself in an attempt to hold yourself together, and take no actions for 1 round.}

Faust moves a little closer, but does manage to stay out of range of the spores. His Magic Missiles slam into the shambler and do damage.

Za'Reed steps up and throws his sword at the basidirond, finishing it off.

Ragnarök shifts to the south and continues pounding on the shambler, which is looking decidedly ragged. [Please update your header to reflect the damage you took last round from the AoO.]

Toregan is blinded and locked in a hallucination, and takes no actions this round.

Yeshua and Truman charge, but their opponent is already dead. [I would have changed your target to the shambler, but that would mean soaking up an AoO, and I wasn't sure how you felt about that. :) ]

The moonflower moves up and attempts to bite Ragnarök, but misses. The sight of a plant trying to bite somebody is very disturbing!

The tendriculous moves up, but it moves slowly and doesn't seem to have any more actions to spend.

The shambler also attacks Ragnarök, but fails to hit the stalwart monk.

Ragnarök finishes off the shambler, and moves back out of the spores.

Yeshua and Truman flee. [In my DM post of April 27, I said that since the spores were described in the PRD as "invisible," I wouldn't be putting them on the map. You do have an important clue, however. Yeshua, in Q-23, was affected by the spores, but Truman, in R-23, was not. Truman actually did not need to flee, although he might very well have chosen to go along with Yeshua.]

Toregan gets hold of himself and backs away. And when he reaches his spot, he finds that he can see again! Nothing is sadder than a blind archer...

Faust readies a magic ring and asks if his friends need help.

The tendriculos and the moonflower move forward eagerly, walking right over the shattered remains of the shambler and the basidirond. The moonflower bites at Ragnarök, and manages to close its--teeth?--on the nimble monk. Rag takes 15 damage. The leafy maw attempts to hold on, but Rag is too good a grappler for that!

The tendriculos bites Faust for 16 damage, but that's not the worst part! The gaping maw clamps on fast, and Faust is grappled!

[Faust said he would cast Haste if he could get everybody; he could get everybody except Za'Reed. He didn't say specifically whether he'd cast it or not, but sure, everybody but Za is hasted.]

Yeshua moves up to engage the tendriculos. The massive plant is already grappling poor Faust, so Yeshua does not provoke an AoO. However! He has dashed right back into the spore cloud, which is still lingering! Yeshua, make a DC 16 Fortitude save or Highlight to display spoiler: {You've shrunk to 1/10th your normal size! Take no actions for 1 round and monsters won't see you.} If you make your save, your attack hits and does damage. Truman, meanwhile, goes over to Faust, sinks his teeth into the hem of the mage's robe, and pulls! [Yes, I know this isn't how it's supposed to work, but I like this better! :) ] Faust gets a +2 to escape the grapple.

Ragnarök attempts to move. He doesn't provoke an AoO from the tendriculos, which is still grappling, but he does from the moonflower. The leafy maw hits, and does 15 damage. Worse, it manages to grapple him! Rag is stuck in the moonflower's mouth! On the plus side, this does keep him out of the spores. Rag punches the moonflower [I assume; you can't reach the tendriculos from here], and hits! It is not a critical hit, but it does do a small amount of damage. Sadly, plants cannot be stunned, so the stunning fist has no effect.

Toregan opens fire on the tendriculos, and does some serious damage.

Za'Reed steps up and attacks the tendriculos, doing some more damage.

The tendriculos heals a small amount, and attempts to swallow Faust whole! It succeeds! Despite Truman's best efforts, the mage disappears down the leafy gullet. Faust takes 5 points of acid damage, and must make a DC 18 Fortitude save.

The moonflower whacks at Rag with its tentacles, but isn't able to hit hard enough to do damage.

And what's that, that Yeshua sees past the bulk of the tendriculos? Why, it's the last basidirond, escaped from the Sleet Storm at last, and coming to join the party.

Yeshua, make a DC 16 Fortitude save or Highlight to display spoiler: {An item you hold has turned into a viper! Drop it and flee from the item at top speed for 1 round}. Truman, make a DC 16 Fortitude save or be Highlight to display spoiler: {Attacked by a swarm of spiders! Whether they succeed or not, however, Toregan is able to finish off the tendriculos with his volley of arrows. Faust is able to sqirm free of the smashed remains of the plant. By the time he does so, the spores have dissipated.

Ragnarök heals himself a little. [Breaking a grapple is also a standard action, so you couldn't do it in the same round.]

The moonflower decides to save Ragnarök for later, and succeeds with a natural 20! Rag is encased in a coccoon! Here is how the coccoon works, from the PRD:

This works like the swallow whole ability, except the swallowed creature is immediately wrapped in a tight digestive cocoon and expelled into an adjacent square, where it takes damage every round (2d6 bludgeoning and 2d6 acid, AC 15, 25 hp). The cocooned target cannot use Escape Artist to get out of the cocoon. Other creatures can aid the target by attacking the cocoon with piercing or slashing weapons, but the creature within takes half the damage from any attack against the cocoon. Once the cocoon is destroyed, it deflates and decays. Each creature swallowed by a moonflower is encased in its own cocoon.

This round, Rag takes 5 bludgeonging and 10 acid damage.

The basidirond moves closer.

[As a great woman once observed: math is hard. So let's take a look at this.

On Thursday, Rag was at 23/51. His stated action on Sunday was to heal himself for 7 hp, but he did not update his header; it still shows 23/51. It should be 30/51.

Yesterday, Rag took 15 total points of damage: 5 bludgeoning and 10 acid. He should now be at 15/51 and still conscious. Yes?]

Yeshua attempts to flee in terror, but his companion moves up to tear a bit at the coccoon.

Yeshua's flight is interrupted; he provokes an AoO from the Moonflower, which is no longer grappling. Luckily, the massive plant just misses.

Faust, perhaps sensing trouble to come, casts Grease on himself.

Toregan unleashes another massive volley of arrows. The first two finish shredding the coccoon; the remainder fly at the moonflower. Only one of these hits, and it seems to do no damage at all.

Ragnarök takes 17 points of damage from the attacks to the pod. If my math from before is right, this puts him at -2 and very save-able. Yay, math!

The moonflower bites at Faust, hitting for 12 damage. It also succeeds in grappling Faust, despite the Grease spell, although that probably isn't going to last.

The last basidirond moves up and releases its spores. Ragnarök is unconscious, Yeshua and Za'Reed are too far away, and Faust is head-down in the moonflower, so they're exempt. However, Toregan needs to make a DC 16 Fortitude save or Highlight to display spoiler: {You're sinking in quicksand! Fall prone and spend 1 round flailing your arms and legs as if trying to swim}. Truman needs to make a DC 16 Fortitude save or Highlight to display spoiler: {You're suffocating! Stand in place, hold your breath, and clutch at your throat for 1 round}.

And the map. I deleted some of the old dead plants because otherwise it was too hard to tell where the basidirond was.

Faust squirms, trying to break free...but he sinks in deeper....but alas, the drow does not wish for his last visage to be of the innards of some plant, he musters all of his strength and, as if by mere luck, an amount of nauseating reagents fall from his pouch, causing the plant to loosen its grasp and allowing the drow to slip out of its pod.

He quickly moves a bit away from both plants, and attempts to focus his thoughts on getting a spell off defensively...

If is able to, he fires off a Fireball behind the plants, at a point where both can be hit by the explosion, but sparing everyone from the group.

Burning a Hero Point to re-roll that Escape Artist.
Move Action to get to the edge of the moonflower's threat area (so I don't provoke an AoO), also, away from the basidirond, so I guess Faust goes to S27 or maybe R27.

Couldn't remember if we can still burn Hero Points for an extra Standard Action, if we can, doing just that with my final Hero Point to get a fireball off defensively (success vs DC 21), firing it at M25 or so, I believe it's possible to get both plants inside the 20ft radius blast. Causing 1 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 1 + 4 + 6 + 3 = 33 fire damage, Reflex for half DC 18; ignore that d20+6, derped out and thought that was a d6 somehow.

(OOC - The map needs to show Truman at P26 based upon my last post... It's still got him at his old location...)

Truman, surrounded again by spores, shakes his head, trying to avoid their effects... (Fort - 25) and is successful...

He snarls in fury and being close to the plant for a full set of attacks, howls and jumps at it, trying to tear even bigger pieces out... (Full Hasted Attack)

Claw 1 (2nd attack due to haste) Hit AC 28 for 3 slashing
Claw 2 - Hit AC 27 for 6 slashing
Bite - Hit AC 20 for 5

(Truman will first try to free his friend and 2nd, if that works, he'll use the rest of this attacks on the flower itself)

Meanwhile, Yeshua charges back into the fray, cursing at the Moonflower for it's annoying spores... He goes to Q28 and attacks it with his claw too...

With a heroic effort, Faust manages to get himself out of the moonflower. With a second heroic effort, he casts a Fireball. [Moving away from the moonflower will provoke. You may have been thinking of the Withdrawal action, where you move away from a creature without provoking. However, the Withdrawal action is a full-round action; you would not be able to escape the moonflower or cast the Fireball in the same round. And, you're only immune from AoOs in the first square you leave, and the moonflower has a 15-foot reach, so it wouldn't be much help anyway. You can take a 5-foot step, but that's as far as you can get without provoking. I'm going to assume you didn't want to provoke, so I'm only moving you 5 feet. You cast defensively, so you didn't provoke an AoO to cast the Fireball.

The basidirond takes the full force of the blast. The moonflower seems to elude the blast, yet somehow takes an awful lot of damage anyway.

Ragnarök's body lies still and lifeless. Wherever the monk is now, this fight is no longer his concern.

Truman unleashes a full attack on the moonflower, and Yeshua charges in to assist. Normally, this would provoke an AoO, but let's say that Faust hasn't yet escaped, so Yeshua is okay! He does more damage.

[Because things are getting pretty dire, I'm going to hold here and give the others a chance to post. If you have already posted actions for this round, please just do a placeholder post, and I'll proceed with the plants' turn tomorrow.]

The sound of a mighty roar followed by the pounding of hooves against the forest floor caught everyone's attention. Something massive was about to join the battle...

Exploding from the brush was a very large brute of a monster. It looked like the offspring of a boar and a bull, but with antlers, large spines across its back, and stumpy legs. Truly, the Gods could not have created any uglier creature.

The beast charged directly at the Moonflower, reached out with its long neck and tried to take a bite. (OOC: I can't see the result of the attack rolls, but the Bite attack should be at +14, +2 for charging. The damage would be 3d6+9)

Just as things are looking bleak, suddenly a large, hideous--um, creature? Monstrosity? Thing?--comes charging in to attack the moonflower.

Like everybody else who charges in to attack the moonflower, it is subject to an AoO. The leafy maw snaps and closes over the beast! Zero takes 12 damage. Worse, he is grappled! Since he is attacking with natural weapons, his attack can proceed, but he misses. Headfirst in the massive plant, he begins to see why this entire fight has been a big cluster-you-know-what.

In keeping with that theme, Toregan all of a sudden can't hit the broad side of a barn. He makes a heroic effort however, and manages to sink two arrows into the basidirond. Two are enough, and the plant slumps to the forest floor.

The moonflower whacks at Zero with its tentacles. It hits for 7, then lands a critical hit for 20 more! Welcome to the game, Jeff! :)

Only Faust and Truman are still in the spore cloud. Faust, make a DC 16 Fort save or Highlight to display spoiler: {You're suffocating! Surprisingly enough, the drow manages to cough the spores out of his system quickly enough to not get affected; he takes a step back, hopefully getting out of the invisible spores' area.

"The possibility that this thing will be up for a meaty main course after it's done with the salad is always there, cousin; still, it got us by such surprise I'm baffled it hasn't simply ran off with one of us if that is what it wants."

"Also, it looks rather sapient, maybe it can be reasoned with, especially if we aid against the moonflower."
, says Faust, firing an Empowered Scorching Ray at the moonflower.

5ft step to R23...don't think I can get out of the spore cloud and not provoke an AoO.
Casting Empowered Scorching Ray at the moonflower, hitting Touch AC 10 (surprisingly it seems to be a hit), causing either (11 + 17 + 3) * 1.5 = 46 or 11 + 17 + 10 + 4 = 42 fire damage; not sure if Empowered merely multiplies by 1.5 or if I roll extra dices.

Za'Reed snaps out of whatever funk he was in, and hurls his sword at the moonflower--twice! He hits--twice! [OOC: does this ability follow the Critical rules for spells, or weapons? Because the second attack looks like it was a 19 on the die, which would make it a critical threat with a sword.]

Faust backs up and lets loose with an empowered Scorching Ray, which completely wilts the moonflower! Yeshua and Truman chop up what is left, and Zero's attacks are not even needed.

The spores linger for a few rounds, causing random hilarity, but they can't actually damage you. The dangerous part of the fight would appear to be over.

[OOC to Ken: Sometimes it's hard to know what level to tell a new player who's joining. At the time you first said you would join, everybody was 6th level. But it took a while to create your character and get all the necessary approvals, and by the time you actually entered the game, people were closer to 7th. "Graggilly gragiil" it tried again.

And then it's form started to change. It's neck, spikes and antlers retracted and it's body shrunk back, twisted and retorted. Moments later, standing before you was perhaps the grubbiest dwarf you had ever seen. He had a long shaggy black beard and a full head of hair, neither of which looked like it had been brushed in a decade. He was covered in caked on mud and more than a few leaves.

Trying many times, he realizes Ragnarok's fate. His head bowed toward the Monks body, Toregan speaks in a solemn tone. "The wand can't save him now. Ragnarok has fallen to Cthonia, and has gone to Gargul."

Turning to the beast-turned-dwarf, he stands and offers a small bow. "Thank you for your aid, good dwarf. Without you, I fear more of us would have fallen to this plant's grasp. The large beast that came to your rescue transforms into a very grubby-looking dwarf, who addresses you in a near-unintelligible accent. He seems to be interested in accompanying you further. He hasn't told you a name yet, but then he seems unused to being around people.

Yeshua approaches him, and Truman gives him a sniff. Both seem inclined to accept the newcomber. And of course, Yeshua isn't the only one accompanied by an animal friend. Toregan is a bit preoccupied at the moment, but the velociraptor sniffing cautiously at the dead plants seems to be his.

Toregan and Faust are understandably upset to see that their long-time companion Ragnarök seems to have gone to join Gargul. Whether Gargul could be persuaded to send him back again is the question on everyone's mind.

But first, you have a mission here. With the deadly plants disposed of, it doesn't take long to harvest several of the Peaceflowers. Then someone thinks to look for treasure, and you find some. You gather everything up, including your companion's body, and begin heading back to the treant grotto.

[OOC: Jerry has agreed to come to the board and portray Gargul. My current plan is to have the treants call upon Gargul in my DM post tomorrow evening, and then have Jerry take it from there. If there is any in-character stuff you need to do first, please let me know as soon as possible so we can coordinate.
