The Training Grounds (DM SteveK)
Wednesday May 7th, 2014 9:30:52 PM

Nikolai's stomach feels hollow.'Training young ones?' However, three years of training taught him the answer. Standing at attention, he shouts back "Sounds great! Sir!"

Cameron smiles, dozens of scenarios they were not trained for but have already encountered in the real world dancing through his head, and starts talking of potential scenarios.

Linden is happy he has no real combat knowledge, and stays in the background, trying very hard not to say anything and remembering his early training before ever joining the Fist. "Peace is not weakness, and takes its own kind of courage." and "Labels are harsh, little dude, and will take you on some bad trips. Call someone a girl because they are shy, whose prejudice, whose aura is out of balance? Theirs or yours?"

Pru laughs a little at Sandor's offer. "Well, I don't know what help I can be, other than a moving target," she says. "But I'm certainly willing to help."

Bliss' eyes light up at the new teacher's words, "non-standard tactics." "Non-standard tactics?" Bliss repeats. "Non-standard tactics!" And the little fellow is off like a bolt!

Carver just shakes his head as Bliss runs off, having not gotten permission... But then again, the kid is just still a kid... Carver then lets out a short laugh. Here he is calling him a kid, when he himself is not much older, just a whole lot larger!

AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK)
Tinker thinks that Nikolai has the right of it. Eight young people and eight different reactions. Course, Tinker can only think of one thing. "We should demonstrate how we did our first graduation test, how everyone worked together and used what they knew. Centaur speed, magical distractions, sneaking, and picking locks." His fingers itch to pick some locks!
...........................

Sandor, the Second Trainer of the Citadel, laughs uproariously. "That's what I'm talking about! You look and act like a bunch of undisciplined blue footed boobies, but all your ideas and skills turns out to be an Honor Fist! I'd like you to show the recruits that you don't have to be looking like a rack of bread, completely identical, to be effective. Ideas we can talk over a brew or two tonight at the Last Assignment, but I can get your infiltration exercise set up in an hour for the recruits to watch. What we'll do is..."

Sandor never gets to finish his idea or his sentence, for at that moment the thunderclap of splintering wood is heard all across the training yard! Two of the waggons that are ponderously coming through the Training Gate shatter and the wild furry contents spill out. Broad, powerful muscles move beneath the massive bear's brown fur, promising both speed and lethal force. And there are FOUR of them!

The two nearest look about with black, beady eyes and roar a challenge. The two far ones savage the horses pulling what used to be their prison, then look about with bloody muzzles and claws. The closest things to the Large bears is the line of recruits armed only with wooden swords!

Sandor springs immediately to action, charging the closest bear and drawing his sword, quickly engaging! Helmbane and Trimmack also charge the closest bears, with Sergeant Trimmack's words floating back to the group. "The Recruits! Protect the Recruits!"

William sees a disaster in the making and yells at his friends, "We need to hold them off long enough for the recruits to get to safety! I'll run over to them and shepherd them off the field... Who'll help me?"

He double moves to AA21, looking at the recruits and calling out in his best command voice, "Get off the field and back to your barracks unless you want to be dinner!!!"

First thing Nikolai can think of is "What is the Fist doing with a bunch of angry bears? and the next thing he thinks of is "Why is William asking who'll help him then run off without an answer? DOH!

Clearly they have to get the bears' attention to themselves and away from the new recruits, who may panic and go running off screaming, only to attract attention to them even more. So Nikolai follows William, shouting and hollering all the way to AC19 to get the remaining two bears' attention towards the Honor Fist and putting himself between the bears and William.

He also calls out to Pru "I could use that magic armor, if you can get it on me!"

" Screaming and yelling may not be a good.... Aw nevermind, you'll figure it out."
Cameron is too far away to get off any of his bardic magic, but not too far away to sting some bears with arrows and make them want to eat him instead of some raw recruit. Wait, Cameron was raw too. Would bears eat cooked recruits? Probably, bears generally eat anything not nailed down and out of their reach. Boy, these were big bears. The bears that a ranger could make friends with were alot smaller than these. Oh right, save the recruits....
Cameron moves to R/18 and fires two arrows, one at each of the unengaged bears that have numbers way too stinking small for him to read even with the browser cranked to 11 ( firing at the 2 closest to the recruits)
Arrow1 hits AC 10 a miss

Prudence Gundle (Kathy)
Thursday May 8th, 2014 1:30:46 PM

Move it, Gundle! The shout heard hundreds of times from dozens of instructors echos in Pru's head. It has never seemed more urgent. Those recruits are weaponless, and she's holding a spear she hardly ever uses. She grasps it tightly and runs.

She gets as close to the recruits as she can manage, then holds out the spear and gasps, "somebody take this! Form up; set it against a charge. You'll be fine." She only hopes they've covered "setting a polearm against a charge" already at some point. Anyway, even untrained, they're probably better at it than she is.

[Use the Run action, which means Pru can move 4 times her speed in a straight line. Assuming that it doesn't have to be absolutely East-West, Pru can make it to about AN-19. Then she holds out the spear and calls for one of the recruits to take it.]

OOC - Team, we need to decide whether or not we're going to have the trainees fight or flee. They have wooden swords and likely few hps, AND we were told to keep them safe. I say we hold off the bears until the trainees are free of danger and then kill the bears after that...

The Training Grounds, Round 2 (DM SteveK)  d6=4 ; d20+9=11 ;
Thursday May 8th, 2014 10:31:20 PM

William sees a disaster in the making, runs towards the recruits and shouts at them to get off the field!

Nikolai wonders why there are a bunch of angry bears? But they have to get the bears' attention, so Nikolai follows William, shouting and hollering to get the bears' attention.

Cameron is too far away to get off any of his bardic magic, but not too far away to sting some bears with arrows! The halfling moves into position and fires at each of the unengaged bears, burying one arrow in the tough pelt.

Carver draws his lance and, shield in hand, trots to a good charging position, yelling out a question into the grounds suddenly alive with a real combat.

Bliss turns, sees what is happening, pulls out his bah, drops prone, and shoots, all as a matter of reflex, and another bear is stung, roaring in unexpected pain!

Linden trots towards the recruits and then casts his Blessing spell, giving a burst of sacred power to support all his allies. He is still 125' away from the closest Recruit. (ooc: Bless is a 50' burst from the caster, and so all PCs are affected, but no Recruit is close enough.) (ooc2: Sacrificial Bond is a swift action and so can only do 1 per round within range. I am assuming that Linden will always take the first hurt within range.)

Prudence thinks, 'Move it, Gundle!' She grasps her spear tightly and runs. Only 30 feet away, she holds her spear like an over-large runners baton, passing on some weapon better than wooden practice swords.

AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK)
Tinker sees Prudence sprint to form a line and he lowers his own head and follows at a run, but his shorter legs make him lag behind.
........................

The three sergeants have been joined by a couple of the drovers and are in a heated battle with two of the large bruins, which leaves two that have only had pin pricks of arrows lodged in their fur. Sandor has enough time to shout back. "Supposed to be to train a bear riding company like the dwarves of Drakesmeade in the Scab. But I don't care how you do it. Kill em, knock em out, kiss them and put them to bed with a bedtime story, but stop them!"

The recruits do what recruits do; everyone does something different! Some, furthest away, move away from the bears, looking over their shoulders to watch the combat. Some, closest to the Training Gate, seem frozen in fear, but at least they have the pointy end of the wooden sword towards the bears. Three Recruits are inspired by Prudence and dash forward to form a line, and the one in the middle grabs Prudence's spear and jams it into the ground. It's not perfect, but it is better than the toy he had!

Grizzly #1 turns to look where the pain came from and spies the Agents of the Fist and the largest target, Carver. A lumbering waddle that would look funny if not propelled by muscle and ending in powerful claws and teeth, the great bear charges Carver! It crashes towards the centaur and reaches out with a massive paw, missing!

Grizzly #2 also turns from the Recruits, but another bear is in its way. In fact there is only one object moving fast to catch its attention.... Prudence Gundle! Unlike its cousin, this bear lopes up and then rears on its hind legs within 5 feet of the sorceress. Prudence is easily within range of its massive paws!

She takes a step back from the bear [to AM-20] and pulls out her crossbow. She hands it to the recruit standing to her right with a breathless "here!"

Briefly, she considers her options. Her Magic Missile spell would hit the bear for sure, but she thinks she needs something showier, something to maybe make the bear back off. She spreads her fingers and casts her other new spell, Burning Hands.

Nikolai decides to not try to kill the bears, withdraws a step and looks into his backpack to retrieve a small bag. He then tosses the bag at the bear in front of him, tangling the furry mass of muscle!

Linden wonders what riled the bears beyond being squeezed in a small moving cage for who knows how long, but now is not the time. The cleric centaur moves to interpose himself between the bears and recruits, but hustling towards the recruits and drawing Mourningstar. (ooc: double move = 70'. Linden can get to AI,21 this round.)

Cameron doesn't care about gently subduing the bears; it is more important to the halfling to do it quickly. Profanities spew from his mouth at the stupidity of bringing in the bears without a dwarven 'Bear Brother'! He takes a few halfling steps forward, slowly closing the distance abd nailing the bear towering over Prudence on his second shot! (ooc: shooting over Bear#1 gives Bear#2 Soft Cover and +4 AC from Cameron's shots.)

Prudence takes a step back from the bear and pulls out her crossbow, holding it in one hand and allowing another Recruit to take it. She feels she needs a showy spell and spreads her fingers and casts. A gout of flame bursts from her hands in a 15-foot cone! The shot is a little wide (Bear makes reflex save), but it IS showy and it DOES get the bear's attention!

Bliss stands up from prone and moves foward, not having time to fire again. (ooc: stand up from prone is a move action and I couldn't find a skill on Bliss' PC Sheet to make it faster based on Bliss' last post.)

William will continue trying to get the trainees of the field, hustling toward their line (avoiding bears) and shouting.

Carver moves to the east, not worrying about the glued bear giving him a parting swipe (cause he can't), and weaving around the battlefield to set up for a Ride By lance charge at Bear #2, but misses.

....................

Sandor, Trimmack, Helmbane, and the Drovers have all they can handle in tackling two of the bears. The battle there still rages.

The two waggons not shattered, the Drovers snap whips and the horses start to move away from the battle. From the waggons, more roars indicate more bears inside.

Recruits continue moving as they have before; some running, some forming a wall with Prudence, and some standing still. A couple more begin moving at Williams' shouts. Of the three with Prudence, the center one keeps the spear planted, the one on the right is ready with a wooden sword, and the one closest to Prudence grabs her crossbow, grabs a bolt from her quiver, and cocks the bow (thankfully out of the reach of the bear!)
..............

Bear#1 is not able to break free and is glued to the ground, but there are enemies still within range of its claws and teeth! He concentrates on his largest opponent, the centaur Carver! All miss.

Bear#2 is impressed with Prudence's magic and steps forward, piston arms lashing out with five inch claws! Two claws slam into the Sorceress, and while she feels no pain from the first because Linden is close by, the second leaves slashes down her side. Temp DM SteveK:
1.Linden has a move of 35 feet, x2 move = 70 feet. Linden moved 70 feet last round. Next round he can continue to move in order to get to AQ. In the future, Linden can spend a hero point on his turn to gain an additional standard or move action. There is nothing he can do to move more last round (it is past).
2.Per Player's request, the first person in range who was wounded automatically had the damage transferred to Linden. Prudence got hit twice. First hit transferred to Linden. Second hit, Linden can't do anything about because Sacrificial Bond is a Swift Action and he can only perform one per round. end DM explanation

IC: Linden uses a Sacrificial Bond and draws Pru's damage to him.(SacBond says it draws in effects as well. I'm assuming Grappling doesn't really count. I believe they mention poisons and weapon effects not conditions due to types of attacks. Maybe not )

Actually each bear gets 3 attacks and can down any one of us in a round, without critting, just saying.

OOC: Thanks for the clarification. However, just curious for future.... Linden would not have been grappled instead of Pru, correct? Conditions and effect are COMPLETELY different in regard to SacBond? I ask because it reads : When an ally within 30 feet takes damage from an attack, you can, as an immediate action, transfer this damage to yourself. This power also transfers any effects that accompany the damage. The damage done to you cannot be reduced in any way.

OOC: Also, checking in.......

Good question. If you were within reach of the grapple it might take you instead. Very good question.

OOC: good one question, like David said, only if within range of the grapple. However, say Ghoul Fever, would be different and such condition would come along with it.

Monday post. Pru has fire resistance; she needs bear resistance!

Carver trots over for a clear target, and charges straight into the bear, using a heroic effort he hits the bear with his charge, screaming at the top of his lungs.

A big bear in his way is not helping Cameron, and his moves to compensate, still not able to put an arrow into the bear holding Prudence with any effectiveness.

William watches the Recruits who are listening make it off the field, then turns and casts a complicated spell, intent on summoning a magical warrior beast!

Pru keeps her cool and glares at the recruit with the longspear. "Anytime you're ready," she says. "Honestly, there's no hurry." To demonstrate the concept of doing whatever you can whenever you can, Prudence one-handed uses a flask of Alchemist's Fire! She misses, and luckily, it tumbles away from the Recruits, only splashing fire on the fire-retardant Prudence and the greasy-haired bear.

Nikolai doesn't think Cameron as a prayer at calming the bear but maybe the monk can knock it out? He . maneuvers for a flanking attack, the bear unable to respond quickly enough because it is Tanglefooted. The strike is off and only slides down a massy flank.

Linden keeps helping Prudence as he can.
OOC1: Prudence took 10 damage; Linden sacbonded 10. Prudence took 9 damage and got grappled.
OOC2: I will rule that the Sacrificial Bond transfers 'effects' of damage. [i]"This power also transfers any effects that accompany the damage."[/b] The Grappled condition is not an effect of the damage, but of an accompanying skill that was rolled separately.
OOC3: Know Nature DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: {A bear can initiate an improved grapple as a result of EITHER claw striking.}

Bliss moves and fires. The sniper hits and finally brings down one tough bruin. It falls from multiple wounds, reluctantly releasing Prudence with a groan. Laying in a pool of its own blood, the chest still rises and falls.

AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Tinker takes the opportunity of Nikolai distracting the bear to bring his Urgosh in two hands and slam it into the bear's backside! His 2-handed hit and rogue reflexes strike hard.
......................

Sandor, Trimmack, Helmbane, and the Drovers finish off the two bears they are fighting, which only leaves one semi-free bear. It still can't break free from the Tanglefoot, and the bear is quickly subdued.

FIGHT OVER!

The three bravest Recruits stick close to Prudence, stars are in their eyes, and it is easy to see it is either hero-worship or puppy love.... At their age, it is hard to tell the two apart!

Sandor comes up to the group. "Not quite what I had in mind, but turned out to be a very good demonstration of unusual tactics that wins the objective and keeps the troops healthy for the next obstacle." Trimmack and Helmbane are also bloody from head to toe, bear and noble blood mixing freely.

.......

For bravery above and beyond normal skill (and reason), the DM hereby awards PRUDENCE with One Hero Point!

William allows his friendly earth elemental to help clean up the mess and pick up some of the heavier objects before it's time for it to return back to whence it came, and he promises to renew their friendship later when needed...

He nearly laughs at the site of the sergeants and their muck covered bodies, but knows better than to say anything. He helps round up the rest of the recruits, making sure they're all accounted for and grins at Pru's new admirers... "If they only knew what they are in for," he muses...

As quickly as it started, it ended, it seems. His bear, sticky-glued to the ground, now subdued, he looks around and notices the other bear still breaths. He moves over to it and tries to keep it from dying.

Heal (First Aid) d20+7 = 21 passes.

After several moments using his shirt as bandages, Nikolai manages to stop most of the bleeding and sees that the bear will survive. He realizes also that in he lacks the basics of healing equipment and makes a point to purchase a Healer's Kit as soon as they are dismissed.

It is not until later, when they discuss the battle, that Nikolai learns how close Pru got to the bear.

Healer's Kit: 50gp

OOC: if we can visit the catacombs in the next day or so, Nikolai will also restock his Tanglefoot bag (50gp).

Cameron see's Nikolai move to save the bear and stands still, not trusting himself to speak to any of the authority figures present. He is glad Prudence is safe but cannot believe the Fist could be this foolish in implementing new tactics. He waits until he is dismissed and heads of to find the Ranger trainer and the currently captive bears.

If the Fist does not have the proper (to Cameron's mind) handlers ready to implement this 'Bear Cavalry' Cameron heads to the High Marshal's office where he will attempt to beg an audience, saying it is an urgent matter both of training and safety that he speak with the High Marshal. If he is seen he will attempt to get the Marshal to allow him to use a priest from the Fist's church to use a Sending Prayer to his Grandfather asking that his Grandfather help make arrangements for a Bear Brother to come and help the Fist train these bears for mounted combat. If the Dwarves of the Scab refuse to let the Fist learn their secrets in this field Cameron volunteers to help with the training, provided no more of the bears are mishandled.

Pru takes her weapons back from the recruits. "Alchemist's fire," she says, nodding at the singed fur of the downed bear. She gestures to the other one, unconscious and stuck in goo. "Tanglefoot bag. It's always nice to have some surprises to throw at your opponents."

She plants the butt of the spear in the ground and leans on it. Casually. Not at all because her knees are still shaking. "Now comes the fun part where we drink and boast of our heroics," she adds.

[Pru would like to replace her alchemist's fire, and possibly buy a few more. Last time, we were able to get alchemical stuff at the Citadel. We don't need to visit the Catacombs for that, right?]

Bliss wanders over to the bears. "Poor bears," he says. He casts Stabilize if it will help any unconscious ones.

He casts his Speak with Animals spell and talks with any bears that are still conscious (the tanglefooted one, anyway, right?).

"Hey Mister Bear, what happened? Why were you fighting? Why were you so angry?"

Untrained Charisma check 22! Nat 20! Woot!

Bliss thinks he has heard vaguely about dancing bears. He has the idea that maybe bears like dancing.

"I'll do you a little dance, Mister Bear!" Trained perform dance is an 11.
