The Training Grounds (DM SteveK) Wednesday May 7th, 2014 9:30:52 PM Nikolai's stomach feels hollow.'Training young ones?' However, three years of training taught him the answer. Standing at attention, he shouts back "Sounds great! Sir!"
Cameron smiles, dozens of scenarios they were not trained for but have already encountered in the real world dancing through his head, and starts talking of potential scenarios.
Linden is happy he has no real combat knowledge, and stays in the background, trying very hard not to say anything and remembering his early training before ever joining the Fist. "Peace is not weakness, and takes its own kind of courage." and "Labels are harsh, little dude, and will take you on some bad trips. Call someone a girl because they are shy, whose prejudice, whose aura is out of balance? Theirs or yours?"
Pru laughs a little at Sandor's offer. "Well, I don't know what help I can be, other than a moving target," she says. "But I'm certainly willing to help."
Bliss' eyes light up at the new teacher's words, "non-standard tactics." "Non-standard tactics?" Bliss repeats. "Non-standard tactics!" And the little fellow is off like a bolt!
Carver just shakes his head as Bliss runs off, having not gotten permission... But then again, the kid is just still a kid... Carver then lets out a short laugh. Here he is calling him a kid, when he himself is not much older, just a whole lot larger!
AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Tinker thinks that Nikolai has the right of it. Eight young people and eight different reactions. Course, Tinker can only think of one thing. "We should demonstrate how we did our first graduation test, how everyone worked together and used what they knew. Centaur speed, magical distractions, sneaking, and picking locks." His fingers itch to pick some locks! ...........................
Sandor, the Second Trainer of the Citadel, laughs uproariously. "That's what I'm talking about! You look and act like a bunch of undisciplined blue footed boobies, but all your ideas and skills turns out to be an Honor Fist! I'd like you to show the recruits that you don't have to be looking like a rack of bread, completely identical, to be effective. Ideas we can talk over a brew or two tonight at the Last Assignment, but I can get your infiltration exercise set up in an hour for the recruits to watch. What we'll do is..."
Sandor never gets to finish his idea or his sentence, for at that moment the thunderclap of splintering wood is heard all across the training yard! Two of the waggons that are ponderously coming through the Training Gate shatter and the wild furry contents spill out. Broad, powerful muscles move beneath the massive bear's brown fur, promising both speed and lethal force. And there are FOUR of them!
The two nearest look about with black, beady eyes and roar a challenge. The two far ones savage the horses pulling what used to be their prison, then look about with bloody muzzles and claws. The closest things to the Large bears is the line of recruits armed only with wooden swords!
Sandor springs immediately to action, charging the closest bear and drawing his sword, quickly engaging! Helmbane and Trimmack also charge the closest bears, with Sergeant Trimmack's words floating back to the group. "The Recruits! Protect the Recruits!" .........................
OOC: Recruits are not showing on the map. They are in a line from AT,10 to AT,20 on the far right side of the map.
William the Courageous (Ken) AC 18 (Mage Armor) hp 17/17 Wednesday May 7th, 2014 10:15:26 PM
William sees a disaster in the making and yells at his friends, "We need to hold them off long enough for the recruits to get to safety! I'll run over to them and shepherd them off the field... Who'll help me?"
He double moves to AA21, looking at the recruits and calling out in his best command voice, "Get off the field and back to your barracks unless you want to be dinner!!!"
Nikolai (JonathanT) AC 16 Tch 16 Ffted 13 HP 28/28 CMD 19/21(Grapple) Wednesday May 7th, 2014 11:11:30 PM
First thing Nikolai can think of is "What is the Fist doing with a bunch of angry bears? and the next thing he thinks of is "Why is William asking who'll help him then run off without an answer? DOH!
Clearly they have to get the bears' attention to themselves and away from the new recruits, who may panic and go running off screaming, only to attract attention to them even more. So Nikolai follows William, shouting and hollering all the way to AC19 to get the remaining two bears' attention towards the Honor Fist and putting himself between the bears and William.
He also calls out to Pru "I could use that magic armor, if you can get it on me!"

Cameron is too far away to get off any of his bardic magic, but not too far away to sting some bears with arrows and make them want to eat him instead of some raw recruit. Wait, Cameron was raw too. Would bears eat cooked recruits? Probably, bears generally eat anything not nailed down and out of their reach. Boy, these were big bears. The bears that a ranger could make friends with were alot smaller than these. Oh right, save the recruits.... Cameron moves to R/18 and fires two arrows, one at each of the unengaged bears that have numbers way too stinking small for him to read even with the browser cranked to 11 ( firing at the 2 closest to the recruits) Arrow1 hits AC 10 a miss Arrow 2 hits AC 24 for 3 damage

The cleric stays and manueavers to maintain 20ft from the recruits.
Prudence Gundle (Kathy) Thursday May 8th, 2014 1:30:46 PM Move it, Gundle! The shout heard hundreds of times from dozens of instructors echos in Pru's head. It has never seemed more urgent. Those recruits are weaponless, and she's holding a spear she hardly ever uses. She grasps it tightly and runs.
She gets as close to the recruits as she can manage, then holds out the spear and gasps, "somebody take this! Form up; set it against a charge. You'll be fine." She only hopes they've covered "setting a polearm against a charge" already at some point. Anyway, even untrained, they're probably better at it than she is.
[Use the Run action, which means Pru can move 4 times her speed in a straight line. Assuming that it doesn't have to be absolutely East-West, Pru can make it to about AN-19. Then she holds out the spear and calls for one of the recruits to take it.]

OOC - Team, we need to decide whether or not we're going to have the trainees fight or flee. They have wooden swords and likely few hps, AND we were told to keep them safe. I say we hold off the bears until the trainees are free of danger and then kill the bears after that...
The Training Grounds, Round 2 (DM SteveK) d6=4 ; d20+9=11 ; Thursday May 8th, 2014 10:31:20 PM William sees a disaster in the making, runs towards the recruits and shouts at them to get off the field!
Nikolai wonders why there are a bunch of angry bears? But they have to get the bears' attention, so Nikolai follows William, shouting and hollering to get the bears' attention.
Cameron is too far away to get off any of his bardic magic, but not too far away to sting some bears with arrows! The halfling moves into position and fires at each of the unengaged bears, burying one arrow in the tough pelt.
Carver draws his lance and, shield in hand, trots to a good charging position, yelling out a question into the grounds suddenly alive with a real combat.
Bliss turns, sees what is happening, pulls out his bah, drops prone, and shoots, all as a matter of reflex, and another bear is stung, roaring in unexpected pain!
Linden trots towards the recruits and then casts his Blessing spell, giving a burst of sacred power to support all his allies. He is still 125' away from the closest Recruit. (ooc: Bless is a 50' burst from the caster, and so all PCs are affected, but no Recruit is close enough.) (ooc2: Sacrificial Bond is a swift action and so can only do 1 per round within range. I am assuming that Linden will always take the first hurt within range.)
Prudence thinks, 'Move it, Gundle!' She grasps her spear tightly and runs. Only 30 feet away, she holds her spear like an over-large runners baton, passing on some weapon better than wooden practice swords.
AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Tinker sees Prudence sprint to form a line and he lowers his own head and follows at a run, but his shorter legs make him lag behind. ........................
The three sergeants have been joined by a couple of the drovers and are in a heated battle with two of the large bruins, which leaves two that have only had pin pricks of arrows lodged in their fur. Sandor has enough time to shout back. "Supposed to be to train a bear riding company like the dwarves of Drakesmeade in the Scab. But I don't care how you do it. Kill em, knock em out, kiss them and put them to bed with a bedtime story, but stop them!"
The recruits do what recruits do; everyone does something different! Some, furthest away, move away from the bears, looking over their shoulders to watch the combat. Some, closest to the Training Gate, seem frozen in fear, but at least they have the pointy end of the wooden sword towards the bears. Three Recruits are inspired by Prudence and dash forward to form a line, and the one in the middle grabs Prudence's spear and jams it into the ground. It's not perfect, but it is better than the toy he had!
Grizzly #1 turns to look where the pain came from and spies the Agents of the Fist and the largest target, Carver. A lumbering waddle that would look funny if not propelled by muscle and ending in powerful claws and teeth, the great bear charges Carver! It crashes towards the centaur and reaches out with a massive paw, missing!
Grizzly #2 also turns from the Recruits, but another bear is in its way. In fact there is only one object moving fast to catch its attention.... Prudence Gundle! Unlike its cousin, this bear lopes up and then rears on its hind legs within 5 feet of the sorceress. Prudence is easily within range of its massive paws! .........................

The cleric centaur moves to interpose himself between the bears and recruits, but hustling towards the recruits and drawing Mourningstar. (ooc: double move = 70'. Linden can get to AI,21 this round.)
Cameron doesn't care about gently subduing the bears; it is more important to the halfling to do it quickly. Profanities spew from his mouth at the stupidity of bringing in the bears without a dwarven 'Bear Brother'! He takes a few halfling steps forward, slowly closing the distance abd nailing the bear towering over Prudence on his second shot! (ooc: shooting over Bear#1 gives Bear#2 Soft Cover and +4 AC from Cameron's shots.)
Prudence takes a step back from the bear and pulls out her crossbow, holding it in one hand and allowing another Recruit to take it. She feels she needs a showy spell and spreads her fingers and casts. A gout of flame bursts from her hands in a 15-foot cone! The shot is a little wide (Bear makes reflex save), but it IS showy and it DOES get the bear's attention!
Bliss stands up from prone and moves foward, not having time to fire again. (ooc: stand up from prone is a move action and I couldn't find a skill on Bliss' PC Sheet to make it faster based on Bliss' last post.)
William will continue trying to get the trainees of the field, hustling toward their line (avoiding bears) and shouting.

The two waggons not shattered, the Drovers snap whips and the horses start to move away from the battle. From the waggons, more roars indicate more bears inside.
Recruits continue moving as they have before; some running, some forming a wall with Prudence, and some standing still. A couple more begin moving at Williams' shouts. Of the three with Prudence, the center one keeps the spear planted, the one on the right is ready with a wooden sword, and the one closest to Prudence grabs her crossbow, grabs a bolt from her quiver, and cocks the bow (thankfully out of the reach of the bear!) ..............

A big bear in his way is not helping Cameron, and his moves to compensate, still not able to put an arrow into the bear holding Prudence with any effectiveness.
William watches the Recruits who are listening make it off the field, then turns and casts a complicated spell, intent on summoning a magical warrior beast!
Pru keeps her cool and glares at the recruit with the longspear. "Anytime you're ready," she says. "Honestly, there's no hurry." To demonstrate the concept of doing whatever you can whenever you can, Prudence one-handed uses a flask of Alchemist's Fire! She misses, and luckily, it tumbles away from the Recruits, only splashing fire on the fire-retardant Prudence and the greasy-haired bear.
Nikolai doesn't think Cameron as a prayer at calming the bear but maybe the monk can knock it out? He . maneuvers for a flanking attack, the bear unable to respond quickly enough because it is Tanglefooted. The strike is off and only slides down a massy flank.
Linden keeps helping Prudence as he can. OOC1: Prudence took 10 damage; Linden sacbonded 10. Prudence took 9 damage and got grappled. The three bravest Recruits stick close to Prudence, stars are in their eyes, and it is easy to see it is either hero-worship or puppy love.... At their age, it is hard to tell the two apart!
Sandor comes up to the group. "Not quite what I had in mind, but turned out to be a very good demonstration of unusual tactics that wins the objective and keeps the troops healthy for the next obstacle." Trimmack and Helmbane are also bloody from head to toe, bear and noble blood mixing freely.

"Q": "This is not my fault! The paperwork is clear, 50 bundles of arrows sent in plenty of time to arrive before the start of that contract!"
Palance: "Quiet! That just proves you are adept at Falsifying Documents as well as Theft, Dereliction of Duty, and Treason against the Fist. And when I make my report, you will be dismissed and court martialled."
"Q": (to the Fist) "Tell her this isn't true! I'm clearly being framed!" Q then pulls out her campaign chest. "I call my right to hire a Fist to investigate. This year's Honor Fist." She unnecessarily points to our heroes making her intentions crystal clear.

He listens to the accusations with a bit of incredulity. He remembers very well their run in with the rats that had clearly been shipped in. That had been just a couple of weeks ago. Although Q would not divulge anything about where the shipment had come from or what was supposed to be in it, it seems obvious to Nikolai that things have escalated to biblical proportions in that time.
"Anyone ever thought of putting a tracking device into a shipment and see where it ends up at? My mother used Locate Object quite often to find my father's stuff he always seemed to misplace. Or, I heard of a jealous mage who used some kind of floating eyeball to follow his wife to see if the rumors that she was cheating on him were true. We could try something like that."

Cameron s distracted by the bears and their plight. He does notice Linden winding up the heal all mojo and gently makes sure the centaur does so AWAY from the bears. They could use the healing, but it would likely lead to their deaths if they started fighting again He is puzzled by the move to the Quartermaster's office, but holds his silence while they are herded to her room. The accusations are pretty bogus as far as he can tell. They may have happened but even he could put a better and more subtle frame on someone than this. He hears Nickolai's whisper ( thus the perception) and steps to Qualtime's side. " I would like to place you in protective custody ma'am. As your hired Fist, my assessment on first glance is that you are being framed and should this ploy not work, the guilty party may resort to physical means to stop you from carrying out your duties. One of our Fist should remain with you at all times to see to your personal safety until this is cleared up." " Captain, If you would be so kind as to submit a written list of the aforementioned charges for us so that we can effectively investigate this matter and have Wolf Regiment's logistic's officer have his requistion papers and recipts ready for us to inspect that would be most helpful. If someone is truly trying to make the Fist look bad it is in all of our best interest to resolve this quickly, before we lose face, or heaven forbid soldiers to these shortcomings in supply." "Sergeant's, do we require any further documentation from the Captain or Wolf Regiment? If not I suggest we close the shop for today and start the tedious task of poring over the requisitions and bills of lading to fill said requisitions." Linden is happy there is a contract that doesn't involve undead things!
Bliss gets the hunch that Q really believes she is innocent, and Captain Palance really believes Q is guilty.
WIlliam listens intently to the argument and since he has nothing else going on, he's willing to help the accused... assuming a normal wage. A thought tickles Williams memory, that perhaps he may be hoping for a little more than the 'normal wage', because for a Trooper, that is only 8 gold pieces per month!
Nikolai listens to the accusations and suggests an idea, a magical tracker to trace a shipment. He makes an aside to Sergeant Trimmack about putting Qualtmie under house arrest. "That way we can make sure to follow them and also go over the books and see if there is any handwriting that's not hers." He follows up with a claim to impartiality.
Cameron thinks the accusations are pretty bogus and not a very subtle frame up job; the halfling already knowing whose side he is on! As usual, his thoughts run with his actions and he begins to take over the situation; Q to protective custody, the Fist to run the Quartermaster shop, asking suggestions from Trimmack and Helmbane, and politely worded directions for Captain Palance herself!
Pru helps out with Cameron's intent, just wanting any wrongdoing to be addressed.
AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Tinker doesn't even think about reading how people react, he takes everything at face value until someone is proven in a lie. Q has always (OK for a month) been true to the team, and that makes her part of the team in his eyes. He stands silent but supportive behind Cameron.
.....................
Adjutant Berkshire looks horrified, like Cameron casually spit a baby on a lance and laughed as it slid down the shaft. "You DARE..." but his rising voice is silenced with only a look from the Captain. Likewise, Sergeant's Trimmack and Helmbane each look like they try to interrupt Cameron, Carver, and Nikolai as they address Captain Palance directly, but are quelled into silence by a flinty eye.
"Berkshire, take these Sergeants to my quarters and hold them there until I arrive. I will speak with this 'Honor Fist' alone" The Adjutant salutes and moves out, and it may be surprising to a couple of the Honor Fist that Berkshire rounds up not only Sandor and Qualtmie, but Trimmack and Helmbane too! Soon our heroes are left alone in the Quartermaster's Office with closed doors and the intimidating war-scared person of Captain Constance Palance.
"Let me make a couple of things perfectly clear." Her icy stare spears Carver. "Qualtmie may hire whoever she likes, but that is very different than suddenly becoming the Inspector General. The contract is going to be between you and Quartermaster Qualtmie and overseen by a Mailed Fist Contractor. She can only put provisions that she can control, and the demanding of a trial isn't one of them. Anyone that you find sufficient evidence that a panel of officers deems as guilty will get Mailed Fist justice." (Carver and the other heroes realize that the punishment for all four of the allegations leveled against Q are the same: death.)
She turns her gaze to Cameron. "Second, I don't have to give you the bug guts off the bottom of my boot. This contract should you accept it is Qualtmie becomes the client, and you will do everything in your power to support the client without hurting the Mailed Fist. You want to talk with someone, talk, but that doesn't mean they need to listen or answer, and I am certainly not going to to grease the wheels for you."
"Third, Qualtmie has asked for the Honor Fist, not Trimmack's Thumb, and so it is just the eight of you: your sergeants can't help you in any way."
"Finally, and then Captain Palance's demeanor changes, some of the flint is out of her eyes, and she acts a little more human. "Frankly, I am unsure of Q's guilt, but if you cannot find any evidence to exonerate her, then I will be forced to dismiss her and have Q charged with the crimes that have happened under her watch." An assessing and speculative look comes across the officer as she gauges the mettle of the heroes. "That Q made a good choice, because the Honor Fist is too new to be caught up in Citadel backstabbing politics, you are more likely to give her an even shot and not be a smiling crocodile waiting to stab her in the back. But you all need to be careful at the same time, don't trust anyone, not even your Sergeants, for they have friends who have friends, and neither I nor Q know for sure who we can trust in the Citadel."
Captain Palance opens the door and pauses. "I will make sure this Quartermasters is closed for 48 hours. You have the run of the office and Warehouse and see Adjutant Berkshire if you need access to Qualtmie."
The Captain does not stay for questions, but leaves the Honor Fist in the now closed Quartermaster Warehouse.

Cameron gives parade-ground perfect responses to the officer, then gets down to business with the team. It is true right now they don't have a lot to go on and not a lot of time to do it. There are certainly more questions than answers! He remembers in the week hanging out and working with the halfling that Qualtmie takes her job very seriously and seems extremely diligent in logging inbound, outbound, and inventory in her ledgers. Her warehouse is clean as warehouses go and it is fairly easy to identify equipment through her system. There were several times Q grumbled under her breath about Everdeep, but she also wasn't someone who complained to a subordinate or behind someone's back.
As to who could make things disappear in the warehouse, Cameron can think of three possible ways (and mostly because Q liked to tell stories of ingenious and stupid thieves); when everyone is busy and distracted with a rush order, when everything is locked up and they get in by magic, or to cook the books to make something appear was in the warehouse when it wasn't ever there in the first place!
Carver will take his time and fully search the area with his detect evil ability, taking his time to be sure it's done right. It is a good thought, but after several hours, he is certain that there is no evil in the warehouse.
Prudence would like to start by speaking with Quartermaster Q. The request is made and after several hours, Adjutant Berkshire and two armored guards escort Qualtmie to the warehouse. No place private, the group will have to talk to Q in plain sight of the guards and Berkshire.
Bliss tells the others about his gut feelings, and gets sarcasm from Mookie for his insight.
AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Tinker isn't one to talk or look over books. "You all can do all that, I'll do what I do best and help search the Warehouse for anything unusal." Tinker takes his time with what he considers as one big puzzle cube and diligently looks over every inch of the Warehouse. (Take 20 in Warehouse) ..........................
Tinker and Carver aren't near done with their searches when a group arrives.
With Qualtmie is a Mailed Fist Contractor with the contract. Her warchest is also with Berkshire and the guards. Q signs the contract and turns 6,000gp over to the Contractor. He turns wizened eyes to the group. "That is 2,000 gold for the contract and a bonus of 500 gold for each member of the Honor Fist if there is enough evidence to exonerate Quartermaster Qualtmie within 2 days. Held and forfeited to the Mailed Fist if the terms of the contract are not satisfied."
The Adjutant then tells the group. "You have one minute for questions. You can always call her back for follow-up questioning. One minute starts.... now."
ooc: the time limit is so we can get questions done in one Post. I don't want to linger talking for weeks! :-)

(Post before the interview DM post...) William agrees to help read through the books, as he's good with numbers and facts and minute detail.. He's sure that a perusal into the details should provide some clues to why or who would want to set this quartermaster up to take a fall... On the other hand, maybe someone else has been stealing things, and maybe they can get some clues...

Nikolai starts taking notes on the equipment inventory to to match it up with the books later. He keeps the items that are getting ready for shipment separate from the items in stock. He also keeps a separate ledger for the incoming stuff still in boxes. However he hasn't finished when Q returns for questioning.
Nikolai is curious about this 'Everdeep'. He hadn't spent as much time here as some of the others and when then dealt with the rats, Q was the only one present. He asks Cameron who this Everdeep is and what is his/her background before bringing him/her up to Q.
With Q present, Nikolai asks Q to sigh her name on a piece of paper for handwriting comparisons, having seen her sign the contract, he trusts that this signature will be genuine and not contrived, and compares that signature with the one on the freshly signed contract.
That's all Nikolai needs for now.
Carver AC 17, AC 19/ shield, CMB 7, CMD 17, HP 35/35 (John C) Thursday May 15th, 2014 11:42:00 PM
Carver, not one for numbers and figures, at least not the current type of figures, decides it might be good to stand out front after asking Q a question or two. "Who is most put out by you being hired, as in who is unhappy about it? Next, anyone submitted a requisition that you've fulfilled, but they've claimed was wrongly filled? Any of the drovers doing the delivery been the same?"
Prudence Gundle (Kathy) Friday May 16th, 2014 11:34:48 AM
Pru is not happy. Her vision of a private chat, in which she might persuade Qualtmie to divulge some of the secrets she's been keeping, has vanished in a cloud of nosy guards. Not to mention her own teammates. Hadn't they just been making plans to check inventory and things?
And now there's no way to ask Q about the rat situation without the guards overhearing. And since the group had promised to keep that mission confidential, that whole line of questioning is now completely off-limits.
"There ought to be a rule," Pru grumbles. "Something about an accused person being able to talk to her helpers without people listening in."
In the absence of such a rule, however, Pru cannot ask the questions she wanted to ask, and her teammates have already asked the other questions.
Bliss (Cayzle) (AC23, HP20 of 20) Friday May 16th, 2014 1:06:26 PM
Before a couple hours go by, Bliss wants to look for rats or mice or other creatures and cast his Speak with Animals (ley check made earlier) to ask if any two-leggers besides Q have been around the place.
Bliss asks who else besides Q has access to the warehouses and the ledgers. He wants to know what the entry points are (doors, windows, locks, etc) to the places that records and goods are stored. He wants to know who was responsible for delivering the goods that went astray. Besides the arrows, what exactly was lost / stolen?
Also, Mookie wants to know the value of the stolen goods.

Cameron looks to Nikolai and says " I don't know, but we can ask her." He notices Pru's dismay at the large audience and frowns. If he had planned ahead he could have gotten her that private talk... well maybe he could have. Instead of asking Q any questions he simply stand out of the guard's line of sight and cast a message spell on her. If she saves vs it he repeats the spell until it works. He then whispers his questions and instructions to her. whispered..." Whisper your answers as low as you can for now. This spell lasts 10 minutes so we can talk after they return you to your room so long as I am in range of you. Where are they keeping you? How far away? Is there a guard in the room with you when you are there? More of these spells will be on you and other will talk to you when you go. Do not resist the spells. We will talk later. Be strong, we will figure this out." Cameron then casts message on William and then on Bliss and then on Prudence. (Cam only gets one person per spell, so he needs to keep recasting and speaking separately to them.) To each he says the same thing. whispered..." You are a stronger caster than I am. This makes your range further and your duration longer. If you can cast the message cantrip then put it on Q before she leaves. I have already told her to expect it and she will not resist it. This way we can talk to her 'alone' after they return her. We may need to follow her a bit to stay in range though. This is all I can think of to get to talk to her alone." Before Q is removed Cameron refreshes his message spell on her.

The centaur feels this is an important point, but the only thing that Berkshire is able to tell him is if they have a body (living or dead) and the stolen goods... well, that would be pretty definite. Other than that, the Adjutant can't see anything. Linden gets the impression that Berkshire only sees issues in black-and-white and it is probably a good thing that he is not in charge of a courts martial panel.
Nikolai is able to gain a handwriting sample from Q.
Bliss wants to look for rats or mice or other creatures with a modicum of intelligence (not a spider or insect). Strangely, there are none and no evidence of little pests that are usually in every building in the Wold. The halfling already knows there are only two known doors to the warehouse; one through Q's office which is human sized, and one big enough for waggons.
Cameron uses a Message spell to ask questions without the guards or Berkshire seeming to catch on. Q answers that she is in a guest room of Captain Palance's tower suite. Once he hears where Q is being held, Cameron is unsure if he will be able to stay with her close enough to use the message spell. He glances at Bliss and whispers..." Up to you, do you think you can stay close enough to her without getting spotted?" Cameron asks Q out loud, " Do you think your life may be in danger from the people doing this?" He knows the answer of course. Unless they are morons, which they seem not to be her life IS in danger from the Fist executing her, not from the real thieves. If she says yes though she may be allowed to keep one of the Fist as a guard. It is doubtful but a possibility. Knowing he can't do something and not trying are 2 completely different things though. Cameron looks at his Fist Mates and says out loud. " I need to speak to Field Marshall Neuterius about the bear situation we just dealt with. I may have the connections to keep the bears from being harmed and to get the regiment what it wants. I will head there now and hopefully be back soon. Keep at it, there has to be an answer here somewhere." This is said as they prepare to move Q back to her quarters. He throws a refreshed Message spell on Q and uses his excuse to follow her at least part way back to her room while heading to the Field Marshall's office. He asks her these questions. whispered..." Do you trust Calamine Everdeep and Sgt Holdfast? Why or why not? You are a smart person, if you were doing this, how would you do it? Maybe they are doing something similar. We only have a short amount of time. What should we concentrate on?" "Don't worry, we will find a way to solve this. And... I like you too. Your company is about the only reason I would have spent my leave in the Citadel instead of out in the fields. It was worth every minute. I won't let you down." Cameron then heads to the Field Marshall's office to at least make an appointment. The bears are counting on him too. (should I roll new checks for the Field Marshall or do you want to use the ones from a few days ago DM Steve?)
DMSteveK: No need to roll, David. There isn't a chance of a snowball in hell for a simple 3rd level Trooper like Cameron to be able to see the Commander of the Mailed Fist except at a great distance. Unlike the US military, there is no such thing as an Open Door Policy. :-)

With that information, Nikolai leaves Qualtmie's signature on the desk with the books and heads to the library where Qualtmie said was his place of duty. On his way over there, he muses 'Why would someone who works in the library want to switch and work in the Duty Shop? Does the Duty Shop hold more prestige than the library? Cameron asks Q if she is in danger, and the look she returns is "yes, duh!", but all she says is "Yes". When Cameron suggests Q gets to keep a guard, Berkshire rolls his eyes. "Captain Palance takes truth very seriously. Quartermaster Qualtmie's safety is of upmost importance while you determine if there is enough evidence to execute her." By Berkshire's straight face, he seems unaware of the irony. "She has had two guards on her at all times already and moved to Captain Palance's tower quarters for further security." While Cameron can't get a personal audience with the Field Marshall, perhaps an hour or so at the Last Assignment or somewhere else where mercenaries congregate may find more information (DC Local Knowledge 15). Qualtmie doesn't know much about Sergeant Holdfast, but as to Everdeep, "that skinny elf has been after my job for months. I wouldn't put anything past that schemer."
Nikolai gets a good description of Calmine Everdeep, a very pale, frail, and stick-like half-elf. It won't be hard to find him in the Citadel of athletic bodies! While pondering questions, he arrives at the library. After some searching, he has found the Undead Section, and overheard three Fist mages talking about the Scab and how it is awash with hordes of undead and duergar wandering all over the place but the dwarves are gaining footholds. "The rebuild of Riddleport is currently going well after its destruction..." begins one, then sees the monk and they all scowl Nikolai to another part of the library. But there is no sign of Calmine Everdeep.
Pru is reasonably good at talking to people, so she attempts to speak with Calmine Everdeep and Sergeant Holdfast, but neither seem to be about. Asking at the library, she finds out that Everdeep has been sick abed for 2 weeks and can be found at the infirmary. Sergeant Holdfast is supposed to be with the Drovers, but they tell Prudence that the Sergeant went into the Warehouse to speak with the Quartermaster.
Carver wanders around not looking for anything in particular, but spends time in the office and then in the warehouse.
Bliss tries to help with the books, but they are boring, so he does a little exploring, and the things he finds! Two secret doors!
William doesn't help much with a search, so agrees to help search the office and books more.. He stops any attempt when Bliss finds the secret doors. William is ready to explore, but seems to suggest that all their friends get back first...
Linden feels he isn't use for much more than a lookout and posts himself outside the Quartermaster Office. Several individuals and small groups arrive at one time or another only to leave grumbling because the Quartermaster is closed. But while he is standing there, he hears a couple bits of conversation. The most interesting is that there is some unrest in eastern Alisidur in the region around Acid City. A group of independent adventurers recently settled there which has caused a conflict between Alisiduian nobles, the New Ga'al Church, and hardliner Ga'alians. No wars yet, but the Mailed Fist has sent some negotiators to the region for possible contracts.

At this point, it is pretty much the heroes decision on what they want to do: talk to Everdeep in the infirmary, find Holdfast, or explore the mysterious and highly suspicious secret corridor that no one knew anything about leading from the Warehouse.
Prudence Gundle (Kathy) Monday May 19th, 2014 10:16:00 PM
On hearing that Everdeep is in the infirmary, Pru would like to talk with Tinker, who was there recently. She's wondering whether Tinker's time there overlapped any, and whether he saw or heard anything interesting.
When she hears about the secret passage, she agrees that it's worth exploring, although she would also like to talk to Everdeep. "Still, I don't suppose he's going anywhere," she concludes.
So, if the group would like to explore the secret passage, Pru will be right there with them. Otherwise, she's heading for the infirmary.

After a careful look for traps, Tinker sticks his eye in the peep hole and describes what he sees.
"Looks like a small warehouse, not as clean or neat as Q's. There are two men loading a waggon with boxes, and another man who is painting out Mailed Fist emblems and putting on a different decal."

Nikolai listens to the description of the warehouse and the loaders. He mentally paces off how far they went and tries to picture where this could be. It would have to be on the outside of the citadel walls, he thinks and tries to picture what lies out there.
"Anyone remember what's on the other side of the wall from the Duty Shop?" he whispers.
He whispers back to Cameron, "That would be great if you could squeeze up to the front, but it is pretty tight up here. I suggest we just barge out there and scare the heck out of them. That might be all we need. We have to make sure none get away though. Carver and Linden should rush through the place and block any exits while the rest of us deal with these three, or any others."
OOC: DM, if it is possible for Cameron to squeeze up front, then Nikolai likes the plan to let him out first and Flare them. Nikolai will also want to let Linden pass to the front too and put himself next to Pru so she can cast Mage Armor on him.
So the plan would be for Cameron to exit first and Cast Flare, followed by Carver and Linden who can rush out and look for exits, then Tinker, Nikolai, and Bliss, followed by Pru and William, at which point William can cast his Summon spell if needed.

ooc: I don't have my USB with all my maps, and so will be very generous on the fight with placement of people.
NIkolai estimates that the secret mini-warehouse is under or within the great curtain wall of the Citadel. They are still inside the Citadel, but there is likely a postern gate to get to the outside from here.
Plans are made and rearrangements. The line now looks like:
A glance through the peephole, and Cameron can see there is a path through the crates from the secret door directly to the 2 men loading the waggon about 30 feet away. The wall is close on the other side, so there isn't very much room for having a distance fight if it comes down to that. The other man is on the other side of a crate, and the crowded mini-warehouse would not allow enough room for Carver to charge anyone other than the loaders. Cameron also knows that he can only Flare one person...
The final problem is that once the secret door is open, the heroes in the tunnel will have to move out of the dark corridor before they can target anything in the room. So while Cameron only needs to move 5 feet, William will need to move 40 feet before he can see anything!

Bliss also tries to pinpoint the location of the hidden rats ... Perception 19 to do so, ugh.
Cameron sees the Giant Rat coming and turns and fires in one deft motion. The rapid firing technique he had learned refilled his fingers with another arrow and sent it after the first. He is surprised that it takes two arrows to put down the Giant Rat, and even then it only looks unconscious!
William hustles through his teammates and pops to the left, hiding behind a crate...
Carver hears the other rats, but looks at the Sargent and declares him the target of his smite evil. Sergeant Holdfast is surrounded by boxes, crates, and narrow paths; it is impossible for Carver to charge him, but he can come to grips, trying to skewer the man-rat!
Pru moves forward and because Carver charged the Sergeant, the two Loaders are open for her spell! They scream as they burn!
Bliss moves into the warehouse and getting behind a box. He tries to confuse one of the Loaders, but he shrugs it off.
Nikolai is completely surprised at the transformation of the three before him. Hopping from crate to crate, he gets to a vantage point and throws a shuriken, missing Sergeant Holdfast.
AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 15(19 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Tinker grunts and grips his dwarven ugrosh. "Looks like we have wet work to do!", and on sturdy legs, he charges the dazzled Loader. By a heroic effort he refocuses his swing and slices an arm. The rat-man loader shrieks in pain! (ooC: The loaders are not true lycanthropes and do not have the DR to silver!) ...............
The two loaders strike at Tinker and miss.
Sergeant Holdfast strikes back at Carver with a shortsword and he tries to bite the centaur, but misses both times. "Poor pony, trying to be so noble when you will only be horseflesh for my vermin!" he purrs, supremely confident.
Three more Aberrant Rats come out of the boxes and crates and attack Cameron, Linden, and Carver!

Nikolai decides that going after the leaders while the spellcasters are casting fire on them is not a good idea and focuses on who's hindering their attacks on the leaders the most, that is, the nasty giant rats!
Thinking to give Carver some relief, he moves (if possible) to flank the rat that attacked Carver while drawing his kama (he doesn't want to touch those flea infested vermine).
If he can't flank the one on Carver he tries to flank the one on Linden. If that is not possible, he tries to flank the one on Cameron.

Mookie caws. "You know nothing, Jon Snow! Stop guessing and try shooting!"
Bliss's ears turn red. "Okay, Okay. I'll try that next. The Sleep I just cast still might work!"
The raven's laughter is harshly mocking. "Ha! DC13 my feathered tush! Your mother knew better than to cast save-or-die spells. She kept to buffs, and her charisma was way higher than yours!"

OOC Pssst, Linden... everyone has 5' reach, except maybe Bliss. 5' reach is the square next to your square. To be clear to use your skill in a no map melee just say you are next to your target and in melee range of one or more of his opponents. You have a pretty good move so it shouldn't be an issue. Also when using an ability like that I would slip in the snippet of text that outlines your special use of the skill for the DM's reference, same as if it were a spell. William, now safe from the rat but angry that his sphere didn't work, returns back to the edge of the tunnel, kneels behind cover and shoots an acid dart at the nearest rat that he can safely hit without penalty....

Carver again swiftly heals himself, tking the edge off the damage that the Sargent has inflicted. (LoH 10 hp) Carver then quips, "You know, this isn't going to end well. I just don't get along well with rats, especially those who break oaths that they have taken." He then attacks again with his sabre and hooves.

Warehouse Fight! Ends (DM SteveK) d20+6=26 ; d20+6=12 ; d8=4 ; d8+3=8 ; 2d6(1+2)=3 Saturday May 31st, 2014 8:46:34 AM
Cameron's arrows leave the second Loader vulnerable to a jab by Tinker who lays the rat-man out! (AC 26crit! 12 no Dam 8+3sneakattack = 11)
Carver finally gets a bead on Sergeant Holdfast and doesn't hold back. One Hoof! Two Hoof! They stun the Wererat and only for a moment he drops his guard... it is enough. The paladin splits him with a chop from right shoulder to left hip. Shock is on his face before Holdfast's eyes roll up in his head and he is dead before he strikes the ground!
With both Wererat and Rat-Men down, it is a simple matter for the heroes to end the two remaining Aberrant Rats. The Warehouse fight is over and the Honor Fist has found its evidence to exonerate Qualtmie! ........................
Captain Palance listens to the group and takes a tour of the min-warehouse. She agrees Q is blameless and releases the halfling. "Obviously this is where the rats have been getting into the warehouse and Citadel, and to think Sergeant Holdfast was a wererat!"
The Aberrant Rats are killed out of hand, but the two Rat-Men are held for judgement and execution. For Sergeant Holdfast's body, it is quartered, the head stuck on a spike above the Citadel's gate, with his other four parts salted down and sent to other Mailed Fist strongholds. "The ultimate fate of traitors" says Qualtmie, thankful it is not HER body making that journey.
Qualtmie herself gives the PCs a 1000gp each, but the Captain steps in. "Fair contract, fair price." She takes half for the coffers of the Mailed Fist. She does, however, give a smile and a compliment. "You Honor Fist were pretty good Agents. I'll keep you in mind if ever I need those talents again."
.....................
All heroes get 700xp and 500gp This should bring everyone to 6,600xp.
Carver gets a Hero Point for going one on one with Sergeant Holdfast!
Linden gets a Hero Point for his excellent use of Sacrificial Bond!

William's glad that fight's over, but he's still sick and says "Friends, can anyone here cure me of this bug I've picked up from the rats? Maybe the sick bay docs have something that can treat it? I'm not the feeling the best..."
He's also glad they're making an example of this traitor, as he has nothing but contempt for that kind of vermin, especially one who tried to get another Fist mate convicted of something they didn't do...
(@DM, can I change the feat I took at the b/g of 3rd level? I realized that the extend feat really won't help me very much, as I already get the benefit b/c of my summoning speciality. I haven't use the feat yet and would like to change it to Craft Wondrous Items)

"If I might ask a question of you? The bears that were being brought in for training as mounts earlier today? They were being poorly handled and the training and treatment that they were receiving is not going to benefit the Fist nearly as much as training from the masters of the form, the dwarves of the Drakesmeade. I am not from Drakesmeade, but my grandfather holds a good bit of sway among the dwarves of the Scab. With your permission and assistance I could contact him and see if he could arrange for a proper trainer to come and attend to the bears. There will likely be lengthy negotiations with them as they are proud of their mounts, but I think with his influence and the Fist's deep coffers the deal can be struck. May I have your boon to contact him?" Diplomacy 10 (bleh) (please erase the first post... Thanks)
DMSteveK: Captain Palance tells Cameron that the Fist has dwarven bear handlers from the Scab already, but they had arrived early that morning and were not at the gate. The bears were supposed to be sleeping and caged and so not a threat or a danger to themselves. That situation has already been taken care of, but she is pleased Cameron is thinking and not afraid to offer his ideas.
Carver AC 17, AC 19/ shield, CMB 7, CMD 17, HP 24/35 (John C) Saturday May 31st, 2014 4:10:50 PM
Carver ponders his extra wealth and decides it's time to visit the Catacombs. "I can not help you there William, but I imagine Linden can tomorrow after he prays for the proper blessings and prayers."
(Are we still doing catacomb purchases here or do we actually head there now? We were doing it here because of access to "Q" here at headquarters.) If doing here, Carver wants his MW Lance magiced to +1 and to hand back in his Fist given armor and to buy Regular Banded mail in his size. total is 3000 gp for both.

Nikolai exuberantly helps wipe out the rest of the rats and when it is all over, looks upon the sliced-n-diced sergeant. "Holy rat-at-oui' Carver! There's no extreme to go for the honor of the Fist with you, is there." and chuckles, a chuckle that sounds uncannily like his father's chuckles.
Nikolai turns to William. "I know someone in the infirmary that you can keep company that has Filth Fever. If you think you got some rat disease, and I got bit too, the two of us can go together and and keep him company. HA!"
In any case, Nikolai doesn't feel anything from the bite yet, bu the doesn't leave anything to chance and goes to the infirmary once they are given leave and has the doctors give him a good look over.
Nikolai witnesses the execution of the thieves with an air of satisfaction. Had Holdfast, can't call him sergeant anymore, not called for their deaths, he'd have some sentiment towards the fate of the thief, but he called his cards without knowing what hand his opponents held and lost.
He accepts his reward with a gleam, not because of the money, but because it meant they had succeeded in proving Qualtmie's innocence, a far more important thing. He writes to his father explaining what happened and how the Honor Fist discovered the plot and that the Wolf Regiment should expect full shipments from now on.
During his down time from training he spends time in the library studying up on Filth Fever, Ghoul Fever, Mush Fever, Moon Fever, and every other Fever he can find a manuscript on.
Soon, a reply from his father with the Official Wolf Regiment seal arrives.
Nikolai Komonov, I am very proud of you and your Honor Fist and their Commitment to the Mailed Fist. As you know, I will never take official notice nor use my position to provide any influence. I am happy you have followed in your mother and my footsteps, and I take every precaution to ensure others can never claim your achievements were won because of your parentage. Your Sensei has prepared for you a gift. He wanted you to have it upon your graduation but it wasn't ready. It is nearly ready and he will send it soon. Good Work and Good Luck in your future assignments.

[OOC: Darn it! Missed a post!]
Pru breathes a little sigh of relief when the battle is over. She didn't like to see her friends and fist-mates bitten by horrible, icky rats!
"I'd like to visit the Catacombs, if there's time," she says when the pay is distributed.
AC 15 T13, F12, CMD 17(21 Bull Rush or Trip); HP 27/27 "Tinker" (SteveK) Sunday June 1st, 2014 1:35:24 PM
Tinker is quite pleased that the team took down the rat-men, but he gets a cold shiver about Wererats; they are the stuff of horror stories around the hearthfire! He learns what he can and then visits the Catacombs to be prepared for a next time.
He takes his time to repair and clean each piece of his equipment, and fondly remembering some of the more nostalgic pieces. His masterwork leather armor crafted by his foster father, Jaspertink. The masterwork tools; both engineering and thievery, presented as a graduation gift made by Unrak, the old dwarf in Trader's Corner. The dwarven Urgosh that has seen him through several battles now, and is getting to be as familiar in his hands as a lockpick...
Tinker will also see the execution, less as a retribution and more as justice. Who knows how many people were hurt by the thieving rats making off with needed supplies!
Bliss (Cayzle) (AC23, HP20 of 20) Sunday June 1st, 2014 2:06:32 PM
Bliss grins at the defeat of the rat-folks. "Good job, Cam, and Carver -- and everybody!"
He's only slightly aware that he himself did not make much of a difference in this fight.
After justice is served, he sticks out a hand to congratulate Qualtmie. "I knew you didn't do it, Miss Q! You are too nice."
Mookie shakes his head at this naiveté, but says nothing for once.
"Wowsy," says Bliss, an exclamation that he learned from Mookie and his mom, one she learned in her distant youth as a wemic cub. "That's a lot of gold!" He carefully counts out his pay and adds it to his existing funds. "Now I have two thousand, six hundred, and fifty gold pieces!" he declares. "What should I spend it on?"
Bliss has no help for William. except he should ask Lindy. "He knows about that stuff."
Bliss ponders his shopping options.
